- 0:59Speaker 1: thing sent. Bob Trumpy, the all time Cincinnati great as
- 1:04Speaker 1: a player and broadcaster, passed away on Sunday at the
- 1:08Speaker 1: age of eighty. Bob was a twelfth round draft pick
- 1:12Speaker 1: in the bengals first ever draft in nineteen sixty eight,
- 1:15Speaker 1: who became a revolutionary player for his ability to stretch
- 1:19Speaker 1: the field like a wide receiver at the tight end position.
- 1:22Speaker 1: After ten seasons with the Bengals, featuring multiple Pro Bowl appearances,
- 1:27Speaker 1: Bob got into broadcasting and was the grandfather of sports
- 1:30Speaker 1: talk radio in Cincinnati. He eventually moved to NBC Sports,
- 1:35Speaker 1: where he called Super Bowls, the Olympics, the PGA Tour,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and much more. Bob is in the Pro Football Hall
- 1:42Speaker 1: of Fame for his lifetime achievement in broadcasting. My condolences
- 1:47Speaker 1: to his family and wide circle of friends from all
- 1:50Speaker 1: walks of life. And later in this podcast, I'll replay
- 1:54Speaker 1: my fun Facts conversation with Bob where he shares some
- 1:58Speaker 1: incredible stories about his remarkable life. But up first, it's
- 2:03Speaker 1: the radio replays from Sunday's roller coaster ride at pay
- 2:07Speaker 1: Course Stadium. This kick launched high and deep. Charlie Jones
- 2:12Speaker 1: catches at the one and sprints up the middle of
- 2:14Speaker 1: the field. He's to the twenty to thirty. It's him
- 2:16Speaker 1: versus the kicker.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Jones down the sideline thirty twenty ten five touchdown. Charlie
- 2:27Speaker 2: Jones with his second kick return touchdown of his NFL career.
- 2:33Speaker 2: He does a jungle jump into the crowd and the
- 2:37Speaker 2: Bengals have scored eleven seconds into the game.
- 2:41Speaker 3: That is incredible. Eleven seconds and the Bengals have seven
- 2:46Speaker 3: on the board.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Fourth down in goal from the two, Caleb Williams will
- 2:50Speaker 1: be in the gun, one receiver out to each side
- 2:52Speaker 1: of the formation. It is a reverse, then a flip
- 2:55Speaker 1: back to DJ Moore. He throws a pass for the
- 2:57Speaker 1: quarterback and it's caught in the end zone by Caleb Williams.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Where here's all by his loathsome Sakias goes in motion.
- 3:06Speaker 1: They toss it forward to him on a jet sweep.
- 3:08Speaker 1: He's inside the ten, lunging for the pylon. Touchdown. Chicago man.
- 3:14Speaker 1: That's clever player. Shotgun snap to Flacco, drops back five steps,
- 3:18Speaker 1: fires a deep ball left side.
- 3:20Speaker 4: T Higgins comes away with the football, touchdown Bengals. He
- 3:26Speaker 4: just ripped it away from the defensive back in coverage
- 3:30Speaker 4: and the Bengals take the lead with one twelve left
- 3:34Speaker 4: in the half.
- 3:36Speaker 5: He took it right off the backside of right right.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Never found the football. Right was wrong.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Three receivers out to the left went out to the
- 3:43Speaker 1: right Williams back to throw, fires a pass into the
- 3:46Speaker 1: end zone. Loveland with the catch, holds on to the
- 3:49Speaker 1: ball after being smacked by Geno Stone. It's a touchdown
- 3:53Speaker 1: for Chicago. Second down in goal. The balls in between
- 3:56Speaker 1: the two and the threes. Shotgun snap caught by Flacco,
- 3:59Speaker 1: throws into the end zone. T Higgins, you know the
- 4:02Speaker 1: catch knocks over the pilon. They are not giving him
- 4:05Speaker 1: the touchdown really, even though he knocked over the pylon.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It's going to be discussed for now. It has been
- 4:12Speaker 1: spotted just short, and I.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Think the bigger official on the back of the end zone,
- 4:17Speaker 3: I think he may overrule and say that was a touchdown.
- 4:20Speaker 6: It is.
- 4:21Speaker 1: There's the touchdown Singo Bears trying to take the lead back.
- 4:24Speaker 1: They're down by three here in the third quarter. Williams
- 4:27Speaker 1: tosses it. It's a run to the left for Brown
- 4:29Speaker 1: inside the fifteen ten five touchdown one to go at
- 4:34Speaker 1: the twenty three of Chicago. Shotgun snap Flaco throwing up
- 4:38Speaker 1: the field. It is caught by Noah Fans running up
- 4:42Speaker 1: the seam. He catches the touchdown pass and the Bengals
- 4:46Speaker 1: will go for two with one forty three to go.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Flaco drops back, throws it into the end zone and
- 4:53Speaker 1: it is caught for the two point conversion by t Higgins.
- 4:57Speaker 1: He has two touchdown catches and a two point conversion.
- 5:01Speaker 1: So the Bengals are down by six forty one thirty five.
- 5:06Speaker 1: They're gonna try for an on sidekick and if they
- 5:09Speaker 1: recover it, there would be plenty of time left to
- 5:12Speaker 1: try for a game winning touchdown. Five teammates on each
- 5:16Speaker 1: side of Evan McPherson, so it's hard to tell which
- 5:19Speaker 1: way he's going to kick it. He stands about three
- 5:22Speaker 1: yards away from the ball, He approaches it, kicks it left.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It is bouncing short of ten yards, but it hit
- 5:29Speaker 1: a member of the Chicago Bears, giving the Bengals a
- 5:33Speaker 1: chance to recover even though it did not go ten yards.
- 5:36Speaker 1: If the Bears touch it first, that makes it a
- 5:39Speaker 1: live ball, and.
- 5:40Speaker 5: There's a wrestling match going on for that football.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Now, Man strong hands win Benindo situations. Man is It's
- 5:47Speaker 3: like you're fighting for your life in that pot.
- 5:49Speaker 1: The officials are trying to pull players off the pile
- 5:53Speaker 1: as the fight goes on for the ball on the
- 5:56Speaker 1: ground at the forty three yard line.
- 5:59Speaker 5: One officials yell Bengals ball.
- 6:01Speaker 1: The Bengals have recovered.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Bengals ball.
- 6:03Speaker 1: The Bengals have recovered. With one minute and forty two
- 6:07Speaker 1: seconds to go, Flaco ready for the shotgun snap. He
- 6:11Speaker 1: catches short drop, firing.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Into the EG zone, caught by Andre Yo Si Bash.
- 6:18Speaker 1: The Bengals have tied it. Flacco raising both arms triumphantly,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and now an extra point by money Mack could give
- 6:28Speaker 1: Cincinnati a forty two to forty one lead with fifty
- 6:32Speaker 1: four seconds to go, and Joe Flacco.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Just calmly slapping skin, slapping palms with teammates and coaches
- 6:40Speaker 3: as he works his way to the Bengals bench. I'm
- 6:42Speaker 3: telling you, man, there's ice water in that man's veins.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Williams in the gun with Manungai to his left, Bengals
- 6:49Speaker 1: creeping up toward the line defensively. Williams drops back to throw.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Here comes a blitz, doesn't get home. Throw down the
- 6:55Speaker 1: middle of the field, caught Loveland at the twenty fifteen
- 6:59Speaker 1: ten five touchdown Chicago with seventeen seconds to go, a
- 7:05Speaker 1: fifty eight yard touchdown pass to tight end Colston Loveland
- 7:12Speaker 1: and the Chicago Bears are going to beat Cincinnati despite
- 7:16Speaker 1: the heroics of Joe Flaco.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Incredible, incredible and mean you score forty two points and
- 7:24Speaker 3: you're gonna lose' that's incomprehensible. And you have a quarterback
- 7:29Speaker 3: that throws for over four hundred yards and four touchdowns wasted.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Frustrating. It's a frustrating game.
- 7:38Speaker 1: The final score Chicago forty seven, Cincinnati forty two. If
- 7:43Speaker 1: not for Chicago's game winning touchdown with seventeen seconds to go,
- 7:47Speaker 1: it could have been, maybe should have been, one of
- 7:50Speaker 1: the most memorable wins in the bengals fifty eight year history.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And what can you say about Joe Flacco Playing at
- 7:57Speaker 1: his two hundred and twentieth NFL game with an injured
- 8:00Speaker 1: shoulder and a graying beard, Flacco threw for a career
- 8:04Speaker 1: high four hundred and seventy yards. His previous high was
- 8:08Speaker 1: three eighty nine, and it was so long ago that
- 8:11Speaker 1: the opponent was Saint Louis. In four starts for Cincinnati,
- 8:16Speaker 1: Flacco is averaging more than three hundred and thirteen passing
- 8:19Speaker 1: yards a game, with eleven touchdowns, two picks, and a
- 8:23Speaker 1: passer rating of one oh two point six. More importantly,
- 8:28Speaker 1: the Bengals are averaging nearly thirty three points a game
- 8:32Speaker 1: with Flacco as the starting quarterback. Here's Joe after another
- 8:36Speaker 1: remarkable performance.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Oh it's tough, you know.
- 8:40Speaker 7: I mean, but anytime you're on the losing end, it's tough.
- 8:45Speaker 7: I think when you've when you've played a lot of games,
- 8:47Speaker 7: it's not the way you lose doesn't make it any
- 8:49Speaker 7: worse necessarily, you know. I think you learn that these
- 8:53Speaker 7: these games come down to the last minute, and you
- 8:56Speaker 7: gotta be ready for anything. And you know a win
- 8:59Speaker 7: to win, a loss is lost. If you don't keep
- 9:01Speaker 7: your head down and and and and go to work,
- 9:04Speaker 7: then it's going to be a long, miserable season for you.
- 9:07Speaker 7: You can't get distracted, uh and you can't you know
- 9:10Speaker 7: you're going to be emotional after a game, but at
- 9:13Speaker 7: some point you've got to let that go. This is
- 9:15Speaker 7: our profession, you know. We we do this for a
- 9:18Speaker 7: living and we take pride in doing it. And I
- 9:22Speaker 7: hope that you would continue to take pride in doing
- 9:25Speaker 7: what you do for a living, no matter what the
- 9:28Speaker 7: outcome is. And yeah, I mean maybe that's easier said
- 9:31Speaker 7: than done, but that's what you got to do, because
- 9:35Speaker 7: you know this leg will eat.
- 9:36Speaker 6: You up and.
- 9:38Speaker 7: It will not be it will not be good. I'm sure.
- 9:43Speaker 7: I'm sure Baltimore isn't sitting there, you know, tucking their
- 9:46Speaker 7: tail between their legs. With the record they have, They're
- 9:49Speaker 7: probably motivated and excited about the opportunity, opportunity that they
- 9:53Speaker 7: have going forward. I don't think we can look at
- 9:56Speaker 7: it any different. Every one of us have enough to
- 9:58Speaker 7: worry about on our own that you can't be wiring
- 10:01Speaker 7: about everybody else, because then all of a sudden, once again,
- 10:04Speaker 7: it's going to be a tough eight weeks for us
- 10:06Speaker 7: if we're worrying about what other people are doing. I know,
- 10:11Speaker 7: team is one, it's one team. In order to have
- 10:14Speaker 7: that one team, you need to focus on yourself and
- 10:19Speaker 7: do your job.
- 10:21Speaker 8: And I get I get it.
- 10:23Speaker 7: It can get emotional. But you know, there's times to
- 10:26Speaker 7: be emotional and show people that. And but usually when
- 10:31Speaker 7: those times are good, in good things and towards people
- 10:34Speaker 7: you love. And I think if we're emotional, then we
- 10:40Speaker 7: should come at it with an angle of this is
- 10:42Speaker 7: my brother, as opposed to the opposite of that. I
- 10:46Speaker 7: just think that's what good, hardworking, tough people do. They
- 10:50Speaker 7: don't look at other people. They look inward and it
- 10:52Speaker 7: doesn't matter what the situation is. They look inward at
- 10:56Speaker 7: the tail end there.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Joe is obviously responding to questions about a potential rift
- 11:00Speaker 1: between the offense and defense after the Bengals scored eighty
- 11:04Speaker 1: points in the last two weeks and did not come
- 11:06Speaker 1: away with a win. Listen, it's human nature to be
- 11:10Speaker 1: frustrated and angry you are, so why wouldn't they be.
- 11:15Speaker 1: But football is the ultimate team sport, and on Monday,
- 11:19Speaker 1: roughly seventy players will be back in that locker room
- 11:22Speaker 1: working together toward a common goal. Here are Ted Carris,
- 11:26Speaker 1: Chase Brown, and Orrin Burks on one of the craziest
- 11:30Speaker 1: games they'll ever play.
- 11:33Speaker 5: It's a crazy ending.
- 11:36Speaker 9: You know, hard to denote something as a classic when
- 11:39Speaker 9: you lose, but that was.
- 11:41Speaker 6: At an all time game.
- 11:42Speaker 10: Just don't turn on each other, like we we know
- 11:44Speaker 10: how they can play. They played really well at the
- 11:45Speaker 10: start of the season, like they did, and they like
- 11:48Speaker 10: they were carrying us on their back, so, you know,
- 11:50Speaker 10: in other words, stepping up. I think like I think like,
- 11:54Speaker 10: you know, we just got to play complimentary football, like
- 11:57Speaker 10: we put the ball in the end zone and go
- 11:59Speaker 10: up a play at the end finish game like just ended.
- 12:04Speaker 6: Like that's it.
- 12:04Speaker 10: Like, that's that's like, that's what we need to do.
- 12:06Speaker 10: Just end game, like make them, make them get us
- 12:10Speaker 10: the ball back, let us go to twenty two victory
- 12:12Speaker 10: and let's end the game. That's how that's like, that's
- 12:14Speaker 10: how I feel. We're taking steps forward so offensively.
- 12:17Speaker 6: So that's good.
- 12:18Speaker 8: You know, the offense did a great job driving down
- 12:20Speaker 8: the field, putting this in a position to win, and
- 12:22Speaker 8: we just came up short. And you know, there's no
- 12:25Speaker 8: point in the fingers is again like everybody looking internally
- 12:27Speaker 8: at ourselves, how can I be better? Uh, just being
- 12:29Speaker 8: the best rison ourselves out there on the field and collectively,
- 12:31Speaker 8: that's what we're gonna like the results if we can
- 12:33Speaker 8: continue to do that.
- 12:34Speaker 9: I don't say anything to anyone right now. I'll let
- 12:37Speaker 9: everyone be raw in their own heads. And you know,
- 12:42Speaker 9: a lot of leadership. There's nothing you can say after
- 12:44Speaker 9: a heartbreaker like that. So you just got to come
- 12:46Speaker 9: to work. I think we're coming in tomorrow and then
- 12:48Speaker 9: when we get back from the break, I mean, you
- 12:51Speaker 9: just got to show up every day with a ferocity
- 12:54Speaker 9: to compete and to try and win ball games. So
- 12:57Speaker 9: I don't have some raw ross speech. It's going to
- 12:59Speaker 9: make anyone feel better today, but you know, excited for
- 13:04Speaker 9: the second half of the season.
- 13:05Speaker 1: The Bengals are now three and six after the defense
- 13:09Speaker 1: was the key to victory and a seventeen to sixteen
- 13:12Speaker 1: Week one win in Cleveland. The Bengals have allowed twenty
- 13:15Speaker 1: seven or more points in every game since. Here's Zach
- 13:19Speaker 1: Taylor after Sunday's loss to Chicago.
- 13:23Speaker 11: Can't believe it, can't believe it. Things right there, and
- 13:27Speaker 11: then we just we don't find a way to get
- 13:29Speaker 11: it done and win a game. We just got to
- 13:30Speaker 11: make one play, just one play, and some of these
- 13:33Speaker 11: losses turn into wins. And so again we just got
- 13:36Speaker 11: to his coaches, we're gonna find this week, finding a way,
- 13:41Speaker 11: finding a way to help everybody and get it done.
- 13:44Speaker 11: Because this is it's sick. It's sick to lose like that.
- 13:48Speaker 11: It's sick.
- 13:50Speaker 6: That's what happened.
- 13:51Speaker 11: So we got to own it, and we got to
- 13:53Speaker 11: keep finding ways to improve and keep finding ways to
- 13:55Speaker 11: find a win. The last two weeks hasn't happened sick
- 14:00Speaker 11: right now, But all we can do is pick ourselves
- 14:03Speaker 11: up and keep fighting and and That's the beauty of
- 14:05Speaker 11: being in this profession and be in this locker room
- 14:07Speaker 11: is is we see what.
- 14:08Speaker 3: We're made of.
- 14:09Speaker 11: We're gonna keep fighting. We we know it was gonna
- 14:11Speaker 11: be pretty loud noise out there, criticism, It's deserved when
- 14:15Speaker 11: when we're the record we are and the results we've had,
- 14:19Speaker 11: We're gonna keep showing our character and keep fighting and
- 14:21Speaker 11: find a way to lead these guys and find a
- 14:22Speaker 11: way to to make some plays and get some wins
- 14:26Speaker 11: and and keep the season alive. That's what we're gonna do.
- 14:29Speaker 11: What Joe Flacco did for us this week, You'll never forget,
- 14:33Speaker 11: you know. And and I mean just knowing what our
- 14:37Speaker 11: quarterback room is working through right now, what Joe Burrow
- 14:40Speaker 11: is doing to and Joe Flacco, and what Jake's all
- 14:42Speaker 11: the things he's done, It's a really mentally tough room
- 14:45Speaker 11: that leads by example. Joe Flacco got the opportunity to
- 14:48Speaker 11: show that this week. That's him. Joe Burrow working like
- 14:51Speaker 11: crazy behind the scenes to do everything he can to
- 14:53Speaker 11: help our team. Flacco, I mean, he couldn't. He could
- 14:57Speaker 11: barely lift his arm this week, you know, and he's
- 15:00Speaker 11: willing to go put himself out there for a bunch
- 15:01Speaker 11: of teammates that he's been with for three weeks. You know,
- 15:05Speaker 11: he's a football player, that's what he's out of here
- 15:06Speaker 11: and said, he said, I play football for a living.
- 15:08Speaker 11: That's what I do. And and oftentimes you need that
- 15:11Speaker 11: throughout the locker room.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Guys.
- 15:12Speaker 11: They're just football players and they remember that and they'll
- 15:15Speaker 11: go out there and do whatever it takes to help
- 15:16Speaker 11: their team win a game, no matter what normach of
- 15:18Speaker 11: the circumstances. Got a bye week next week, you get
- 15:20Speaker 11: a chance to get rested up. That's how Joe Flacco
- 15:22Speaker 11: looks at it. And so he went out there and
- 15:24Speaker 11: put himself on the line. I'm sure he's gonna be
- 15:26Speaker 11: in a ton of pain tomorrow, and we'll give him
- 15:29Speaker 11: ten days off and we'll see if you can come
- 15:31Speaker 11: back and do it again. It's frustrating for everybody to
- 15:34Speaker 11: put in the work that's being put in and this
- 15:36Speaker 11: is the result we've had. It's it's frustrating and and uh,
- 15:40Speaker 11: you know, sometimes you got to take a deep breath
- 15:42Speaker 11: and then then come back to work and try to
- 15:44Speaker 11: uplift others. That's I faced a lot of diversity here
- 15:50Speaker 11: and the only thing I know how to do is
- 15:52Speaker 11: keep trying to lift people up. That doesn't mean we
- 15:54Speaker 11: run from corrections, that doesn't mean we don't give criticism.
- 15:57Speaker 11: But at the same time, the easy thing to do
- 15:59Speaker 11: is question and everything and point fingers and and and
- 16:03Speaker 11: uh be negative and and be an energy vampire in
- 16:06Speaker 11: a lot of ways. And I think we got enough
- 16:08Speaker 11: guys that just want to continue to lift people up
- 16:09Speaker 11: and finanswers, find solutions, help where they can make myself better,
- 16:14Speaker 11: make the person next to me better. And that's that's
- 16:16Speaker 11: all I know how to do. That's how we built
- 16:18Speaker 11: the coaching staff that does that too. We built the
- 16:20Speaker 11: locker room full of leaders and great men that are
- 16:23Speaker 11: that are falling suit there and that's what I've seen
- 16:25Speaker 11: from them. And that's just what we're going to continue
- 16:27Speaker 11: to do. And I don't have something I can say
- 16:29Speaker 11: that's going to say we we We're just going to
- 16:31Speaker 11: fix this and things are going to be better. It's
- 16:33Speaker 11: not that simple. I wish it was, but I can
- 16:35Speaker 11: promise you we're gonna fight like kel to to keep
- 16:38Speaker 11: keep finding wins here and get the season turned around.
- 16:41Speaker 1: The Bengals have a by next Sunday before a road
- 16:44Speaker 1: game in Pittsburgh. The Steelers beat the Colts on Sunday
- 16:47Speaker 1: to improve to five and three, meaning the Bengals are
- 16:50Speaker 1: two and a half games back in the division. Cincinnati
- 16:53Speaker 1: is a half game behind the second place Ravens. So
- 16:57Speaker 1: if the Bengals are going to stay in the hunt
- 16:59Speaker 1: in the a f SEE North, they're going to have
- 17:01Speaker 1: to win their head to head matchups against those two teams.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Now time for the radio guy's recap. Let's start with
- 17:10Speaker 1: the obvious positive, and that is the latest remarkable performance
- 17:14Speaker 1: by Joe Flacco. Four hundred and seventy yards three oh
- 17:17Speaker 1: five in the second half, four touchdowns, what should have
- 17:21Speaker 1: been one of the great miraculous comeback victories in Bengals history.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I'm running out of words to describe the guy. It's incredible.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Three hundred and five yards in the second half, Are
- 17:30Speaker 5: you kidding me? That's absurd. I mean six and ten
- 17:33Speaker 5: yard passing day, that equates to eight touchdowns, that equates
- 17:38Speaker 5: to as well. Those numbers are incomprehensible, they're unattainable. Yet
- 17:43Speaker 5: he's doing it. You tip the cap to him. Boy,
- 17:46Speaker 5: here's a guy that understands the game of football. It
- 17:49Speaker 5: hasn't passed him by. He knows exactly what he's doing.
- 17:52Speaker 5: He knows how he's supposed to do it, what he's
- 17:55Speaker 5: supposed to do, and how he's supposed to get there
- 17:59Speaker 5: to get it done. And his teammates love him. They
- 18:04Speaker 5: worshiped the ground he walks on. Really, I mean, they're
- 18:08Speaker 5: waiting to hear his next words with baited breath. You know,
- 18:11Speaker 5: it's a remarkable thing to watch, and they're responding to him,
- 18:16Speaker 5: and you know he's got weapons to throw to. Jamar
- 18:19Speaker 5: Chase t. Higgins had big days. You'll see made some
- 18:23Speaker 5: big plays as well, But three hundred and five yards
- 18:27Speaker 5: is you know, you don't dream. I guess you do
- 18:31Speaker 5: dream about it when you're a young player, high school,
- 18:33Speaker 5: college or NFL player, but to actually achieve it is
- 18:38Speaker 5: yet another.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Thing in a half, just amazing, ridiculous. Let's discuss something
- 18:44Speaker 1: that we briefly discussed on the air late in the game.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Joe Flacco is forty years old. There have been a
- 18:49Speaker 1: couple of instances within the last few years where it
- 18:52Speaker 1: looked like his career was over. We both agreed late
- 18:55Speaker 1: in the broadcast that if he's interested in coming back
- 18:57Speaker 1: next year as Joe Burrows back up at age forty one.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I'd sign them to that deal right now.
- 19:04Speaker 5: I agree one hundred thousand percent. I think that would
- 19:07Speaker 5: be the best one to two punch, the best tandem
- 19:10Speaker 5: to quarterback tandem the National Football League has ever had.
- 19:14Speaker 5: I'm not talking about it just this year. I mean,
- 19:17Speaker 5: these two guys, they know how to play football. They
- 19:21Speaker 5: love the game. They're all about the game. The game
- 19:24Speaker 5: is a big part of their life. They're football players.
- 19:27Speaker 5: They're proud to be football players, loud and proud to
- 19:29Speaker 5: be football players. You know. And Joe Burrow is on
- 19:32Speaker 5: the field today supporting the efforts to Joe Flacco. That
- 19:36Speaker 5: was good to see. I think they've got a good relationship.
- 19:39Speaker 5: I think they've bonded. You know, they probably have spent
- 19:44Speaker 5: quite a bit of time together talking football, talking other things,
- 19:48Speaker 5: you know, in life about life. Blacko's that kind of guy.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Blacko's you know, he's he's a stage veteran football player,
- 19:55Speaker 5: eighteen seasons in the National Football League. That alone would
- 19:58Speaker 5: be something for Joe Burrow to into and find out
- 20:01Speaker 5: how the hell he's accomplished that. And being able to
- 20:04Speaker 5: stay out of harm's way and avoid injury for as
- 20:07Speaker 5: many snaps, as many hits as he's taken out there.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I think there are x'es and o's factors that could
- 20:15Speaker 1: be helpful for Joe Burrow of Flacco is still around.
- 20:17Speaker 1: But I think even more than that, he's just such
- 20:20Speaker 1: a normal guy. Joe has this crazy life that none
- 20:24Speaker 1: of us Joe Burrow, that is crazy life that none
- 20:26Speaker 1: of us can identify with. You know, every move that
- 20:30Speaker 1: he makes is scrutinized and seen by millions of people.
- 20:33Speaker 1: But maybe just being around a guy who's a father
- 20:36Speaker 1: of five nothing phases him. That part of it I
- 20:40Speaker 1: think would be good for Joe Burrow.
- 20:41Speaker 5: I think Joe Flacco is normal. I mean, he's a
- 20:44Speaker 5: normal dude that just happens to be able to play
- 20:47Speaker 5: football at the highest level it can be played, you know,
- 20:51Speaker 5: I mean he is. I mean, I don't know in
- 20:55Speaker 5: Bengals history if there's been another game where a quarterbacks
- 20:58Speaker 5: is frowing four with three hundred yards and a half.
- 21:00Speaker 5: I mean, that's like stratospheric stuff. That's Hall of Fame stuff.
- 21:04Speaker 5: I mean that football should go you right up to
- 21:08Speaker 5: right up to the Hall of Fame, you know. I
- 21:12Speaker 5: know Joe probably wouldn't want it to because he didn't
- 21:15Speaker 5: win the football game. And that's the reason you play,
- 21:19Speaker 5: as has been said many times, you play to win
- 21:22Speaker 5: the game. Period. That's end of sentence. That's what it's
- 21:26Speaker 5: all about. And Joe Flako is going to win a
- 21:29Speaker 5: lot more games for the Cincinnati Bengals this year. I
- 21:31Speaker 5: think it's only just begun.
- 21:33Speaker 1: All right, enough of the positive should we get to
- 21:35Speaker 1: the other side of the coin. Let's talk about the
- 21:38Speaker 1: defensive issues, and there are many up First, stopping the run,
- 21:43Speaker 1: the Bears top two running backs were out. Kyle m Nungai,
- 21:48Speaker 1: seventh round draft pick out of Rutgers, goes up and
- 21:51Speaker 1: down the field for most of the game. The Bengals
- 21:53Speaker 1: wind up allowing more than two hundred and fifty rushing yards. Again,
- 21:57Speaker 1: the problems begin up front.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Right absolutely. I mean when you give up two hundred
- 22:02Speaker 5: and fifty rushing yards, what what I mean more than
- 22:08Speaker 5: once in the same season. I don't think that's happened
- 22:12Speaker 5: in Bengal history either. So, I mean there's a lot
- 22:14Speaker 5: of things going on here, positively and negatively, and it's
- 22:17Speaker 5: a three and six football team trying to figure things out. Man,
- 22:23Speaker 5: there are It starts with the with the defensive line.
- 22:26Speaker 5: I agree with you. You know, they're they're getting beaten,
- 22:28Speaker 5: they're getting handled at the line of scrimmage. Too many times,
- 22:31Speaker 5: they get consumed, they're you know, covered up by blockers
- 22:36Speaker 5: and don't get off, don't get off the block, and
- 22:38Speaker 5: don't make plays, and there's too many yards after contact
- 22:44Speaker 5: that you know that that they allow, and it just
- 22:48Speaker 5: it's starting to get old. I bet Al Golden is
- 22:50Speaker 5: tearing his hair out by the roots. I bet he's
- 22:53Speaker 5: not pleasant to live with. I'm sure his wife could
- 22:55Speaker 5: attest to that. These kind of these kind of stretches
- 23:00Speaker 5: where your side of the football is not holding up
- 23:02Speaker 5: its center of the bargain, it's costume the football team wins.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Is very, very difficult to deal with because you know,
- 23:09Speaker 5: you have a lot of pride in what you do
- 23:10Speaker 5: as well, and you've risen to a very high level
- 23:13Speaker 5: of the highest level of football, and you know you're
- 23:16Speaker 5: embarrassed by what they're doing.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Al Golden's a good coach in my opinion. Lou Anarromo
- 23:21Speaker 1: is obviously a good coach too. The Bengals tried to
- 23:23Speaker 1: switch things up and see if maybe l could develop
- 23:26Speaker 1: the younger guys a little bit better than Lou had done.
- 23:29Speaker 1: The bottom line is this is a personnel issue. The
- 23:32Speaker 1: Bengals are going to need to continue to add defensive
- 23:36Speaker 1: talent in a big way in the next year.
- 23:39Speaker 5: There's no doubt. I mean, Duke Tobin, I know, we
- 23:43Speaker 5: know him very well. We understand and appreciate the fact
- 23:46Speaker 5: that he is a guy, is a football lifer, and
- 23:49Speaker 5: he understands the game of football. Social media is not
- 23:52Speaker 5: being kind to Duke Tobin right now. It's a very
- 23:55Speaker 5: difficult time for him. You know, he's he's been on
- 24:00Speaker 5: the game forever, played the game and then went to
- 24:03Speaker 5: work as a scout with his dad and Bill Tobin
- 24:06Speaker 5: legendary one of the best personnel guys to ever work
- 24:10Speaker 5: in the National Football They put together super Bowl winning
- 24:13Speaker 5: football teams. Duke Tobin was the guy who the architect
- 24:17Speaker 5: of the team went to the Super Bowl for the
- 24:20Speaker 5: Cincinnati Bengals as well. Did they win the Super Bowl? No,
- 24:23Speaker 5: That's what I would love to see. Somehow it can happen.
- 24:26Speaker 5: I'd love to see the Cincinnati Bengals win the division
- 24:31Speaker 5: to go to the win the playoff game, go to
- 24:34Speaker 5: the ANFC Championship, win that and go to the Super Bowl.
- 24:37Speaker 5: I mean, I'd like to see it before I'm done,
- 24:39Speaker 5: and they better do it sooner out and later, because
- 24:42Speaker 5: I ain't gonna be around forever.
- 24:45Speaker 1: The trade deadline is upon us. The Bengals historically have
- 24:48Speaker 1: not liked to trade away their best players, but in
- 24:52Speaker 1: light of the circumstances, their record, Joe Burrow's injury, the
- 24:56Speaker 1: need to upgrade their defensive personnel, do you think they're
- 25:00Speaker 1: more open to trading somebody like Trey Hendrickson or Logan
- 25:04Speaker 1: Wilson than they typically would have been in the past.
- 25:07Speaker 5: You know, you got to think, so, you got to
- 25:08Speaker 5: think that they would be in that mindset, particularly the
- 25:12Speaker 5: difficulty they're having getting a contract done, you know, and normally,
- 25:18Speaker 5: and that's the case, when Mike Brown has come to
- 25:20Speaker 5: a stalemate or you know, a roadblock or a difficult
- 25:23Speaker 5: situation in contract negotiations, that's when you start to think
- 25:27Speaker 5: about trading people. So, I mean, I'd hate to see
- 25:31Speaker 5: him trade Tray because I mean, they're having trouble pressure
- 25:36Speaker 5: in the quarterback. They just can't get any anything done,
- 25:39Speaker 5: and he is their best pass rusher by far. He's
- 25:41Speaker 5: probably one of the three best pass rushers the NFL
- 25:43Speaker 5: has to offer. So I would hate to see Trey
- 25:47Speaker 5: Henderson go elsewhere and be what that football team needed
- 25:51Speaker 5: to get over the top and you know, start winning
- 25:55Speaker 5: their division, winning the conference championship and going to the
- 25:59Speaker 5: super Bowl.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Else Yeah, nobody wants to see Tray go. On the
- 26:03Speaker 1: other hand, at this point, it's a if the price
- 26:06Speaker 1: is right type of situation really with all of those
- 26:09Speaker 1: guys that are being rumored as potential trade candidates.
- 26:12Speaker 5: Yeah, you're right, and if you get some kind of
- 26:15Speaker 5: an offer you can't refuse for anybody. I remember Paul
- 26:18Speaker 5: Brown telling us all, you know, standing up in front
- 26:20Speaker 5: of the entire football team, If you think you're going
- 26:24Speaker 5: to be here forever, if you think you're above being
- 26:27Speaker 5: let go or traded or whatever, think again, young man,
- 26:31Speaker 5: that's not the case. If we get an offer for
- 26:33Speaker 5: you that we can't refuse, we won't refuse it. You'll
- 26:36Speaker 5: be gone in a heartbeat.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Well, we almost had a chance to call arguably the
- 26:43Speaker 1: wackiest come from behind victory in Bengals history. We just
- 26:46Speaker 1: needed to eliminate the last fifty four seconds.
- 26:49Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right, one minute of our lives, one minute
- 26:53Speaker 5: of the Bengals football lives in this twenty twenty five season.
- 26:56Speaker 5: It has been a crazy, wacky year for sure, but
- 26:59Speaker 5: as we said Dan, far from over. There's a lot
- 27:02Speaker 5: of season left. Eight football games. It a lot can
- 27:06Speaker 5: happen in those eight games.
- 27:08Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you by Pai Core,

- 27:22Speaker 1: the best care for the best fans. Kettering Health is
- 27:25Speaker 1: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Finally, my latest
- 27:30Speaker 1: fun facts conversation this week was with tight end Noah Fan,
- 27:33Speaker 1: but we're going to save that for a future podcast
- 27:36Speaker 1: because I want to conclude this episode by replaying the
- 27:39Speaker 1: conversation I had a few years ago with Bob Trumpy,
- 27:43Speaker 1: who passed away on Sunday at the age of eighty.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Time for some fun facts with one of the great
- 27:49Speaker 1: players in Bengals history, a four time Pro Bowl tight
- 27:52Speaker 1: end who went on to have a great career in broadcasting,
- 27:55Speaker 1: the legendary Bob Trumpy, greatest twelfth round draft pick in
- 27:59Speaker 1: an NFL history. I would say, how did you learn
- 28:03Speaker 1: that you were selected by the Bengals? I remember was
- 28:06Speaker 1: something bizarre.
- 28:07Speaker 6: I was working as a bill collector for a beneficial finance.
- 28:12Speaker 6: The address is six oh seven Hill Street. Don't tell
- 28:16Speaker 6: me how I remember that. It was in downtown Los
- 28:19Speaker 6: Angeles and my wife called me and said, you just
- 28:25Speaker 6: got drafted. And I said that's impossible. I just got
- 28:28Speaker 6: out of the Navy. She said, no, no, no, by
- 28:31Speaker 6: some team in Cincinnati. Is that Ohio? And I said yeah.
- 28:37Speaker 6: She said it's the Cincinnati Beagles And I said, are
- 28:42Speaker 6: you kidding? She said no, I'm not kidding. And I said,
- 28:47Speaker 6: how do you know that? He said, there's a telegram
- 28:49Speaker 6: here from Paul Brown the congratulations you've been drafted in
- 28:53Speaker 6: the twelfth round by the Cincinnati Bengals. And I said,
- 28:58Speaker 6: you're sure you're not kidding me. This is no joke.
- 29:01Speaker 6: She said, yes, yes, aren't you excited? And I said
- 29:04Speaker 6: absolutely I am. And I walked into the boss of
- 29:07Speaker 6: beneficial finance at six oh seven Hill Street in downtown
- 29:10Speaker 6: Los Angeles and said I quit. I might mention I
- 29:15Speaker 6: had no clue how they knew about me or what
- 29:19Speaker 6: the connection was between the Cincinnati Bengals and one kid
- 29:23Speaker 6: named Trumpy. And when I made the team, my wife
- 29:25Speaker 6: and I moved in an apartment on Galworth Road. And
- 29:29Speaker 6: another person there was Al Locasel with his wife and
- 29:32Speaker 6: he was a director of player personnel. And we're sitting
- 29:37Speaker 6: down on the front stoop one night having a beer
- 29:39Speaker 6: and I said, Al, who's responsible for me being drafted?
- 29:44Speaker 6: He said me? And I said, what did you know
- 29:47Speaker 6: about me? Said? I saw you twice, once on the
- 29:50Speaker 6: beach in Daytona and once planned for the University of
- 29:54Speaker 6: Utah against Houston. And I just wrote your name down
- 29:57Speaker 6: and kept track, and the draft twelve around. Paul Brown says,
- 30:01Speaker 6: offense receiver, somebody with some speed. And he said, I'm
- 30:06Speaker 6: flipping through a spiral notebook and I get to the
- 30:10Speaker 6: t's and there's your name. Some total of the research
- 30:13Speaker 6: they did on me. That was it.
- 30:15Speaker 1: When he said on the beach in Daytona, what was
- 30:17Speaker 1: he referring to?
- 30:18Speaker 6: He was a scout for the San Diego Chargers. The
- 30:21Speaker 6: guy that owned the motel were four fraternity brothers and
- 30:25Speaker 6: I were staying for spring break was owned by a
- 30:29Speaker 6: guy named bud Asher. Bud Asher ran owned and coached
- 30:33Speaker 6: a minor league football team in Daytona Beach. We didn't
- 30:37Speaker 6: know that, just pure coincidence that we stopped there. A
- 30:42Speaker 6: guy comes up to me, some kid I had in
- 30:45Speaker 6: Illinois hooded sweatshirt on. He said, I understand you're a
- 30:48Speaker 6: receiver at the University of Illinois. Said yeah. This was
- 30:50Speaker 6: between my freshman and sophomore year. He said, I'm trying
- 30:53Speaker 6: to make this team. Would you mind catching some passes?
- 30:57Speaker 6: Format Oh, I don't mind at all, big beach, beautiful shirt.
- 31:02Speaker 6: Get done. Go back up by the pool. And one
- 31:05Speaker 6: of my paternity brothers said, some guy was asking about you,
- 31:09Speaker 6: and I said, what do you mean asking about me? Well,
- 31:13Speaker 6: the quarterback was trying out, not me, he said, no,
- 31:16Speaker 6: he was asking who you were. And he had a
- 31:18Speaker 6: big ring on. It was al locusl.
- 31:22Speaker 1: We're doing fun facts with Bob Trumpy. You used the
- 31:25Speaker 1: expression big receiver, tall and fast but not heavy. What
- 31:29Speaker 1: did you weigh when you first showed up at camp.
- 31:31Speaker 6: To eight legitimately, But I weighed in with a ten
- 31:35Speaker 6: pound weight in a towel on a shoe string underneath,
- 31:40Speaker 6: So I thought the first meeting. We had a meeting first,
- 31:43Speaker 6: as was always the case with Paul, and everybody was listening.
- 31:48Speaker 6: I was counting. I'm not joking. I was counting the
- 31:52Speaker 6: number of tight ends and the number of wide receivers.
- 31:56Speaker 6: And he went through the numbers as to what numbers
- 32:00Speaker 6: they were going to keep at what positions and who
- 32:03Speaker 6: might that be? And I thought, she was you know,
- 32:08Speaker 6: if I can be in both those lines, I got
- 32:11Speaker 6: a better chance to make the ball club. So the
- 32:14Speaker 6: first night I lost a roommate, Wally Scott. He was
- 32:20Speaker 6: cut before the first practice. But I gained an idea
- 32:24Speaker 6: as to how I could be in both lines, and
- 32:26Speaker 6: I the first year I weighed with that ten pound weight.
- 32:31Speaker 6: Now make the team. Last game of the season, we
- 32:35Speaker 6: played the New York Jets. They played what we referred
- 32:39Speaker 6: to as an over defense. The defensive end was on me.
- 32:44Speaker 6: If we were left, it was Erlin Biggs. If we
- 32:48Speaker 6: were to the right, it was Jerry Philban. Biggs was
- 32:53Speaker 6: two eighty Philman was two sixty five. And I weighed
- 32:57Speaker 6: in that week at one ninety six to myself. So
- 33:01Speaker 6: game ends, we get beat and Bill Walsh walks up
- 33:04Speaker 6: to me on the plane after the game. He said, man,
- 33:06Speaker 6: you had a tough day. I said, I can't block
- 33:09Speaker 6: those guys. And he said, well, is a technique, And
- 33:11Speaker 6: I said, no, I weigh one hundred and ninety six pounds.
- 33:14Speaker 6: And he just goes crazy, What why didn't you tell me?
- 33:18Speaker 6: You go no, no, no, no, no no. And I said,
- 33:20Speaker 6: you're not listed at one ninety six, You're listed at
- 33:23Speaker 6: to eighteen. I said, well, I weighed in with a
- 33:25Speaker 6: ten pound weight. So for the next two years I
- 33:28Speaker 6: had no weight naked, but I made the team.
- 33:33Speaker 1: We're doing fun Facts with Bob Trumpy. Describe your relationship
- 33:36Speaker 1: with Paul Brown.
- 33:39Speaker 6: I think he treated us all exactly the same.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Uh.
- 33:43Speaker 6: He was the boss. I don't ever remember him give
- 33:48Speaker 6: us a giving us a one one for the gip
- 33:51Speaker 6: or speech. I don't ever remember him. I don't ring
- 33:54Speaker 6: a cuss word.
- 33:56Speaker 10: Uh.
- 33:57Speaker 6: He treated me like everybody else. I was thankful for that.
- 34:03Speaker 6: That's all I wanted. Uh and uh. But he did
- 34:08Speaker 6: invite me wants to a golf tournament up in Dayton,
- 34:13Speaker 6: put on by a friend of his. And when he
- 34:16Speaker 6: called me, uh, he called my house. My wife answers,
- 34:20Speaker 6: and I'm at work at Pogues and Kenwood off season
- 34:23Speaker 6: job and my wife calls me and says Paul Brown
- 34:29Speaker 6: just called me. He wants to talk to you. My
- 34:32Speaker 6: first thought was Buffalo. I'm going to Buffalo, and I
- 34:39Speaker 6: quickly h called and Mary, who was going to turn
- 34:45Speaker 6: out to be his future wife, answered the phone. She said,
- 34:48Speaker 6: hold on just a minute. Coach does want to talk
- 34:50Speaker 6: to you. And he gets on the phone and he says,
- 34:54Speaker 6: my friend up in Dayton, Si Lauter has a golf
- 34:58Speaker 6: tournament I'd like to invite you, called the Bogie Busters.
- 35:02Speaker 6: And what bogie Busters? You mean? No, Buffalo, I'm not
- 35:08Speaker 6: going to Buffalo and he said, no, just play all okay? Fine.
- 35:12Speaker 6: So as a player, I enjoy the relationship.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Trump. As I mentioned at the beginning of the interview,
- 35:20Speaker 1: after your career, you went on to have a tremendous
- 35:22Speaker 1: career in broadcasting, got the opportunity to call Super Bowls
- 35:25Speaker 1: and so many other big events. What was more nerve
- 35:28Speaker 1: racking for you playing in a big game or being
- 35:31Speaker 1: behind the mic at a Super Bowl.
- 35:34Speaker 6: I never got the adrenaline rush broadcasting that I got playing,
- 35:39Speaker 6: and I've never found anything that matches that adrenaline rush.
- 35:43Speaker 6: I mean, I don't care if you're fifteen and one
- 35:46Speaker 6: or for US thirteen and one or one and thirteen.
- 35:51Speaker 6: The adrenaline rush you get before a football game, it's
