Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 0:43Speaker 1: about this week's episode subject, Dennis Hopper. We are also
- 0:47Speaker 1: discussing two cultural giants that we lost last week, David
- 0:51Speaker 1: Johansson and Gene Hackman, and we get into your voicemails,
- 0:54Speaker 1: text DMS emails and as always, a whole lot of rosie.
- 0:58Speaker 1: All right, Discos, let's get into it. So, since the
- 1:16Speaker 1: last time we talked, which was during last week's after Party,
- 1:22Speaker 1: we lost two giants. I think we can use that
- 1:25Speaker 1: word giants from the world of entertainment. David Johansson and
- 1:29Speaker 1: Gene Hackman, two men, two artists of immense influence. David Johansson,
- 1:35Speaker 1: of course, as a New York doll, he was the
- 1:38Speaker 1: last living New York Doll as well, a band that
- 1:41Speaker 1: he led, A band that directly influenced so many others,
- 1:44Speaker 1: A band as exciting and thrilling and dangerous as the
- 1:49Speaker 1: city that it represented, A band largely reflective of David
- 1:53Speaker 1: Johansson's unique style and personality, which was tough, witty, funny.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I caught a class. If David Johansson never created The
- 2:03Speaker 1: New York Dolls, it's doubtful, Like I really truly mean this,
- 2:07Speaker 1: This isn't this isn't hyperbole. It's doubtful that we would
- 2:09Speaker 1: have had bands like the Stooges, the Ramones, And if
- 2:14Speaker 1: we didn't have the Ramones, then we wouldn't have had
- 2:15Speaker 1: the Clash or the Sex Pistols, and we definitely wouldn't
- 2:17Speaker 1: have had you know, without the New York Dolls, we
- 2:19Speaker 1: definitely wouldn't have had Kiss or Molly Cruet. At the
- 2:23Speaker 1: very least, Motley Crue would have been a hell of
- 2:26Speaker 1: a different band. If The New York Dolls never made
- 2:29Speaker 1: it into Nikki Six's record collection, I didn't grow up
- 2:31Speaker 1: in a New York Dolls fan. They were before my time.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I came to them late. I came to them actually
- 2:35Speaker 1: through Johnny Thunders's solo stuff. So I wasn't there obviously
- 2:40Speaker 1: when they started. It was before I was born. But
- 2:43Speaker 1: in the research I've done, both on the New York
- 2:45Speaker 1: Dolls and on bands like Blake Blondie and reading, especially
- 2:50Speaker 1: in reading Legs McNeil's book Please Kill Me, you really
- 2:53Speaker 1: get a sense of the stir, the unique stir, the
- 2:57Speaker 1: unique energy that the New York Dolls excitement that the
- 3:00Speaker 1: New York Dolls created in New York City at their spark,
- 3:05Speaker 1: at their beginning, specifically around the early seventies shows and
- 3:08Speaker 1: the Mercer Arts Center shows that were depicted in How
- 3:14Speaker 1: Was That Movie? The TV show on HBO Vinyl. These
- 3:18Speaker 1: shows were the coolest of the coolest shows by every estimation.
- 3:23Speaker 1: This whole scene that the New York Dolls had kind
- 3:25Speaker 1: of built and that had sprung up around them around
- 3:29Speaker 1: the creation of their band, it was fell all over
- 3:32Speaker 1: the city. I mean, from a young Jeffrey Ross Hyman
- 3:35Speaker 1: aka Joey Ramone to Bette Midler. I've even read accounts
- 3:39Speaker 1: of John Lennon. If not you know, being a fan
- 3:42Speaker 1: of the New York Dolls at least being interested or
- 3:44Speaker 1: aware of what was going on at the time, and
- 3:46Speaker 1: like I said, Bette Miller was hanging out down there.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I read it wasn't true. I checked it this morning.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I read that Hendricks was at a New York Dolls show.
- 3:53Speaker 1: When I checked that out, and he died, I believe
- 3:55Speaker 1: the year before they came to be, So if you
- 3:57Speaker 1: read that, that's not true. But of course Bette Midler,
- 4:01Speaker 1: a host of others who went on to become famous,
- 4:03Speaker 1: Debbie Harry, too many to mention. The Dolls were the
- 4:08Speaker 1: hottest thing in New York, unquestionably, and they were one
- 4:12Speaker 1: of those bands that, of course didn't sell a lot
- 4:15Speaker 1: of records, but whose influence is still being felt in
- 4:18Speaker 1: our culture fifty years later, even beyond music with style,
- 4:22Speaker 1: with filmmaking. I'm actually have a film on the back
- 4:25Speaker 1: on in the background right now. It's called Smithereens. It's
- 4:29Speaker 1: just playing on Criterion Channel, and it's said in the eighties,
- 4:32Speaker 1: early eighties, I believe in Manhattan, and just from the
- 4:35Speaker 1: look of it and the feel of it and the
- 4:36Speaker 1: sound of it and all of it, you can you
- 4:38Speaker 1: can feel the influence of the New York Dolls in
- 4:40Speaker 1: this little indie movie. David Johansson was a was a
- 4:43Speaker 1: star for sure, despite the band not selling a bunch
- 4:47Speaker 1: of records, so you know, even as a star, though,
- 4:50Speaker 1: it's hard to even explain the type of the type
- 4:53Speaker 1: of star that David Johansson was in The New York Dolls.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I mean, he's he's an everyman, tough guy, but he
- 5:00Speaker 1: he's in lipstick and high heels and he's got this
- 5:03Speaker 1: androgynous image that he's projecting while he's fronting the New
- 5:07Speaker 1: York Dolls. But he's still, like I said, tough, fast talking,
- 5:11Speaker 1: the scrappy New York cab driver. All that worked in
- 5:15Speaker 1: contrast with his band personas somehow, and it just all
- 5:20Speaker 1: added up to this certain brand of icon. David Johansson
- 5:25Speaker 1: was the best type of rock star. He was many
- 5:27Speaker 1: things at once, just like New York City. Okay, I've
- 5:32Speaker 1: said that about New York City in the past. It's obvious,
- 5:34Speaker 1: but David Johansson was more than just the front man
- 5:36Speaker 1: of the New York Dolls. Of course, he was the
- 5:38Speaker 1: Buster Poindexter character that monster hit from the eighties, Hot
- 5:42Speaker 1: Hot Hot. He was an actor, most notably as the
- 5:45Speaker 1: Ghost of Christmas Past and Bill Murray Scrooge, and I'm
- 5:48Speaker 1: sure there's a host of other roles that I'm not
- 5:51Speaker 1: thinking of right now that are more indicative of just
- 5:54Speaker 1: how awesome David Johansson was. I had a brief, a brief,
- 5:59Speaker 1: very brief personal exchange with David Johannson about five years ago,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and you know, I was fully aware of the legend
- 6:06Speaker 1: that he is, and I found him just in that
- 6:09Speaker 1: moment to be gentle and kind, and he just projected
- 6:13Speaker 1: this this ease about him that was just beyond cool.
- 6:17Speaker 1: That's that's how I would describe it. So rest in peace,
- 6:21Speaker 1: David Johansson. There's there's been a gazillion oh bits about
- 6:25Speaker 1: him and tributes and a lot more eloquent than what
- 6:28Speaker 1: I just laid out to you, and I just tried
- 6:29Speaker 1: to give it to you raw and sort of semi
- 6:32Speaker 1: off the coff of how I felt, how I feel
- 6:35Speaker 1: I should say about David Johansson's place in rock and
- 6:38Speaker 1: roll history. And I think if you asked he yesked
- 6:41Speaker 1: all the greats, they'd give you something similar to what
- 6:43Speaker 1: I just gave you. David Johansson was a one of
- 6:46Speaker 1: a kind artist who broke the mold, and he will
- 6:48Speaker 1: forever ever be missed. We also lost Gene Hackman, and
- 6:55Speaker 1: you know, like David Johansson, Gene Hackman was immensely influential
- 7:00Speaker 1: own ways that are harder to qualify. I think. Where
- 7:03Speaker 1: Johanson was sort of over the top and burst into
- 7:05Speaker 1: our cultural consciousness in these brief, impactful moments, leaving a
- 7:10Speaker 1: loud mark on music and film, Gene Hackman, to me, anyway,
- 7:15Speaker 1: was so good and so consistent that it's almost it's
- 7:20Speaker 1: almost like we took him for granted. Yet there he was.
- 7:23Speaker 1: He's in all these great roles year after year. I
- 7:27Speaker 1: threw out my childhood, from before my childhood, you know,
- 7:30Speaker 1: into my adulthood, Gene Hackman just kind of always there,
- 7:33Speaker 1: always pumping out great role after roll after roll, until
- 7:36Speaker 1: he suddenly wasn't and when he stopped making movies and
- 7:39Speaker 1: retired from the public eye about I guess what a
- 7:41Speaker 1: decade ago, two decades ago, how many of us even
- 7:45Speaker 1: really noticed? I know I didn't, I'm ashamed to say.
- 7:49Speaker 1: And I say this because a couple of months ago
- 7:53Speaker 1: is when I realized this, when these paparazzi photos of
- 7:56Speaker 1: a gaunt looking Gene Hackman in his nineties were really,
- 8:00Speaker 1: he doesn't look anything like like we remember him as
- 8:03Speaker 1: and it was at that moment that I realized that
- 8:05Speaker 1: he was still around. And I don't know what that's about,
- 8:09Speaker 1: talk about fading away instead of burning out. But again,
- 8:14Speaker 1: there's something really interesting there to me about an artist
- 8:18Speaker 1: who's just so good and so consistent and so prolific
- 8:24Speaker 1: that we take them for granted, and we don't really
- 8:28Speaker 1: give ourselves the time and the moments to celebrate them
- 8:33Speaker 1: and to really dig in and shout about them and
- 8:37Speaker 1: geek out on them. And Gene Hackman was just always there.
- 8:40Speaker 1: His filmography is as impressive as almost any other great
- 8:45Speaker 1: twentieth century actor. I mean, these movies are incredible, French Connection,
- 8:49Speaker 1: Hoosier's Bonnie and Clyde Royal Tenantbaumbs, the Firm. The Firm's great.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I know there's going to be Cinophiles out there who
- 8:57Speaker 1: are like the Firm. When are you talking with the
- 8:58Speaker 1: Firm's fucking awesome. And he is tremendous and unforgiven. Even Superman, Mississippi,
- 9:04Speaker 1: Burning Young Frankenstein, and of course the Conversation Hackman is
- 9:10Speaker 1: so good, so consistent, and so Gene Hackmany and all
- 9:15Speaker 1: these films, Like I said, we take him for granted.
- 9:17Speaker 1: At least I do. That's my take. I don't know
- 9:19Speaker 1: if you guys feel that way. And there's just something
- 9:22Speaker 1: to be said about that, that greatness that is so
- 9:24Speaker 1: steady that it goes unnoticed. And that's what I believe
- 9:27Speaker 1: Gene Hackman had, and I believe that he had a
- 9:29Speaker 1: career that most actors in Hollywood would die for. And
- 9:34Speaker 1: that's actually something we need to talk about, is you
- 9:37Speaker 1: know how Gene Hackman himself died. We're still figuring it out.
- 9:41Speaker 1: David Johansson died through cancer. Gene Hackman's death alongside his wife,
- 9:46Speaker 1: Betsy Arakawa, is still very much under investigation. If you're
- 9:51Speaker 1: unaware of what happened. Their bodies were found in different
- 9:54Speaker 1: parts of their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Odutopsy
- 9:57Speaker 1: and toxicology reports are still pending. There were pills scattered
- 10:02Speaker 1: around the body of Hackman's wife, but not around Gene
- 10:06Speaker 1: Hackman himself. Both are believed to have been deceased for
- 10:11Speaker 1: as long as a week, possibly a little bit longer
- 10:14Speaker 1: before they were discovered when this happened last week. The
- 10:18Speaker 1: fact that their dog was found to be dead as
- 10:22Speaker 1: well led everyone to believe that or to speculate, I
- 10:24Speaker 1: should say that this was carbon monoxide poisoning and that's
- 10:27Speaker 1: what was to be blamed, but apparently that's been ruled out.
- 10:31Speaker 1: There are no signs of trauma to their bodies, if
- 10:35Speaker 1: we're to believe what's been reported. There's no signs of
- 10:38Speaker 1: foul play. But both these deaths are strange. Hackman was
- 10:44Speaker 1: ninety five, okay, obviously no spring chicken. His wife though,
- 10:47Speaker 1: was sixty five. How did they both die at the
- 10:50Speaker 1: same time in different parts of the house. And what's
- 10:53Speaker 1: up with their dog being dead? Twelve year old dog
- 10:56Speaker 1: found dead on the scene as well. Anyways, find out
- 11:00Speaker 1: and we'll do something a little more fully on Gene
- 11:04Speaker 1: Hackman in the future. And of course we have a
- 11:07Speaker 1: New York Dolls episode. What that gets into, you know,
- 11:10Speaker 1: obviously David Johansson in front of that band, so we
- 11:12Speaker 1: do a lot on David Johanson there. But I think
- 11:13Speaker 1: there could actually be some sort of David Johansson tribute
- 11:16Speaker 1: episode in the future. There's more to that guy's career
- 11:20Speaker 1: than we obviously get into in the New York Dolls episode.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And I'm just frankly fascinated by the guy. So I'd
- 11:25Speaker 1: love to stick my head and stick my head in
- 11:27Speaker 1: that wormhole for a couple of weeks and come out
- 11:29Speaker 1: the other side with something cool for you guys to
- 11:30Speaker 1: listen to. So maybe we'll do that in the future.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And uh yeah, Hackman David Johansson. Two deaths in the
- 11:35Speaker 1: past week heavy stuff. One death mysterious, one death rather uneventful.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Both sad, two lives well lived with massive contributions to
- 11:44Speaker 1: our culture. Both men will be missed by millions, including
- 11:46Speaker 1: of course those of us here in disgraceland. Speaking of
- 11:48Speaker 1: disgrace about Sean Combs and that lawyer who quit the
- 11:53Speaker 1: TikTok rumor uh why yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's the
- 11:57Speaker 1: rumor mill will not quit And what's being bandied out
- 12:00Speaker 1: as the reason why Ditty's attorney bailed. It's so disgusting,
- 12:05Speaker 1: it's so grotesque. I can't repeat it here in this space,
- 12:07Speaker 1: but if you want to know my thoughts on it,
- 12:08Speaker 1: you can hit me up in the Patreon chat. We
- 12:10Speaker 1: can talk about it over there in private, like proper degenerates,
- 12:14Speaker 1: behind closed doors, privacy of our own digital home. Related
- 12:19Speaker 1: news to Diddy, jay Z is suing the accuser who
- 12:23Speaker 1: brought a lawsuit against him through Tony buzzby jay Z
- 12:25Speaker 1: suing that accuser for defamation. And as I say, if
- 12:28Speaker 1: you go for the King, you better not miss they missed,
- 12:31Speaker 1: and here comes jay Z speaking of kings. We got
- 12:34Speaker 1: some Dennis Hopper, We got some Stevie Rayvaughn, Dennis Hopper.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Of course, this week's full episode of Disgrace sand Stevie
- 12:40Speaker 1: ravon last week's exclusive episode for our All Access members,
- 12:44Speaker 1: We're going to be talking about those guys in this
- 12:46Speaker 1: year after party. Before we get to that, I want
- 12:48Speaker 1: to talk about what's coming up in Disgrace andd Next
- 12:50Speaker 1: to your feed are our rewind episodes on Tupac Secure,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and these have particular relevance right now because of Sean
- 12:56Speaker 1: Combs as we get ready to go into this Sean
- 12:57Speaker 1: Diddy Coombs trial into two months. It's right, two months
- 13:02Speaker 1: May fifth, still on the books. Okay, so we got
- 13:06Speaker 1: a bone up, got a bone up on our nineties
- 13:09Speaker 1: hip hop true crime. There's really five episodes on the
- 13:13Speaker 1: whole Tupac and Biggie saga. When I started Disgracing on
- 13:18Speaker 1: the first season, there's a joint episode on Tupac and
- 13:21Speaker 1: Biggie thirty minutes, and then about two years after that,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I released two two part episodes, one on Tupac himself
- 13:27Speaker 1: and one on the Notorious Big that book ended a
- 13:29Speaker 1: season of Disgraceland. I think they did. I think they
- 13:32Speaker 1: book ended it. Anyways, they all came out around early
- 13:34Speaker 1: twenty twenty. But this Tupac episode, if you have not
- 13:37Speaker 1: heard it, this two part two Pac episode, you were
- 13:39Speaker 1: in for a treat. And like I said, if you
- 13:41Speaker 1: have heard it, time to listen again. Time to bone up,
- 13:43Speaker 1: get ready for this trial. It's coming on Sean Combs
- 13:45Speaker 1: in a couple months. And plus, you know, with everything
- 13:48Speaker 1: that we've learned about Sean Combs and about Tupac's murder
- 13:51Speaker 1: in the last few years, I want to know what
- 13:53Speaker 1: you guys think about Tupac's murder. I want to know
- 13:55Speaker 1: what you guys think about how I depict it in
- 13:57Speaker 1: these episodes and what else is happening. Oh yeah, next Tuesday,
- 14:02Speaker 1: Saint Patty's Day. I know people hate when I say
- 14:04Speaker 1: Saint Patty's Day, but I don't care. I grew up
- 14:05Speaker 1: in Clinton, Massachusetts. You could not be more irish, you
- 14:07Speaker 1: could not be more Catholic. And I know, I know,
- 14:10Speaker 1: I know there's there's purists out there who say that
- 14:13Speaker 1: the Irish, the true cat the true Irish, the true Catholics,
- 14:16Speaker 1: don't say Saint Patty's Day. Well, I grew up amongst
- 14:19Speaker 1: I'm Catholic myself. I grew up amongst Catholics and we
- 14:22Speaker 1: said it. So I'm not going to stop it. Okay,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I'm not Saint Patrick's Day. There, I said it for you.
- 14:27Speaker 1: For Saint Patrick's Day, also known as Saint Patty's Day.
- 14:30Speaker 1: We have a Thin Lizzy episode that's coming up, that's
- 14:32Speaker 1: on Tuesday. That's for you guys to hear. When you're
- 14:34Speaker 1: listening to this Thin Lizzy episode, I want you to
- 14:36Speaker 1: be thinking about the greatest Irish bands of all time.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Okay you can. You can tell me drop Kick Murphy's
- 14:44Speaker 1: and I'll take it, all right, I'll accept it. They're great.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I love them. They're amazing. But you're gonna get bonus
- 14:50Speaker 1: points for Irish bands. Okay, there ain't that many of
- 14:54Speaker 1: them speaking to Catholics. Uh My priest went to high
- 14:58Speaker 1: school with some of the guys from you too. How
- 15:00Speaker 1: cool is that? So I know what his answer is,
- 15:02Speaker 1: but I want to know yours. Who is it? Let
- 15:04Speaker 1: me know, be thinking about that when that then Lizzy
- 15:06Speaker 1: episode pops next week. I'll be back in a flash
- 15:08Speaker 1: right after this with your voicemails, your texts, your DMS
- 15:11Speaker 1: emails and more. All right, we are back. Just a
- 15:34Speaker 1: quicker reminder of the Apple podcast listeners have auto downloads
- 15:37Speaker 1: turned on so that you're not missing out on any episodes.
- 15:39Speaker 1: All right, six one seven nine oh six six six
- 15:42Speaker 1: three eight to leave me a voicemail and send me
- 15:44Speaker 1: a text. Last week's Marilyn Monroe episodes being rewound in
- 15:47Speaker 1: your feed. We asked the question of do you think
- 15:51Speaker 1: that the Kennedys had anything to do with Marilyn Monroe's death?
- 15:55Speaker 1: And here is an answer from Who's this from? This
- 15:58Speaker 1: is from THEE.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Hey Jake, this is Jesse from the sixty one nine. No,
- 16:05Speaker 2: it's easy to say that the Kennedy's had something to
- 16:08Speaker 2: do with Marilyn Monroe's death. I think us as human
- 16:12Speaker 2: beings just automatically assume that just because someone was affiliated
- 16:16Speaker 2: with someone in a powerful position, that oh, we had
- 16:20Speaker 2: to go ahead and take this person out. No, I
- 16:22Speaker 2: don't think that was it. I just think that circumstances
- 16:28Speaker 2: may have contributed to her death. But me personally, I
- 16:31Speaker 2: just don't think it was the Kennedy's. Thanks everything you
- 16:33Speaker 2: do for the show, win for getting all this creative
- 16:36Speaker 2: stuff for us to listen to.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Man, thanks six one nine, Jesse, I agree with you one.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I know that's not that interesting. I know the big
- 16:44Speaker 1: juicy conspiracy theory is more interesting. But you know, I
- 16:49Speaker 1: think the Kennedy's in a lot of way, In a
- 16:50Speaker 1: lot of ways, we're shits, and they did some pretty
- 16:53Speaker 1: pretty awful stuff. But I think on balance, especially Bobby Kennedy,
- 16:57Speaker 1: I think he was a good dude. And yeah, he
- 16:59Speaker 1: may have been in love with Meril Monroe, but I mean, hey,
- 17:02Speaker 1: can you fucking blame the guy? I mean, come on,
- 17:04Speaker 1: but does does that mean he killed her? I don't
- 17:06Speaker 1: think so. I agree one hundred percent with your take
- 17:08Speaker 1: on this, Jesse. We also, you know, we released the
- 17:11Speaker 1: stevee Yvonne episode in our all access to our all
- 17:15Speaker 1: access members. If you didn't get in the feed, it's
- 17:17Speaker 1: because you're not a member of the unit of a
- 17:18Speaker 1: membership for the all access part of Disgrace and five
- 17:21Speaker 1: bucks a months by the way, So so a lot
- 17:24Speaker 1: of talk with about Steve yvon which was last last
- 17:27Speaker 1: month's exclusive episode. I always stumble over how to say that.
- 17:31Speaker 1: That went to our all Access members and we got
- 17:33Speaker 1: this call here regarding Steve Yvon from Curtis in the
- 17:35Speaker 1: five to one.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Three, Hey, Jake Is Curtis from five to one to three,
- 17:39Speaker 3: that's Middletown, Ohio.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Uh.
- 17:42Speaker 2: You asked the question about.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Artists who found themselves in a supporting role to another artist. Well,
- 17:49Speaker 3: to have a continuation on Stevie ray Vaughn's story, what
- 17:54Speaker 3: I heard a few months ago was that when Stevie
- 17:59Speaker 3: Ray left David Bowie's tour, David Bowie went and found
- 18:07Speaker 3: another guitarist who happened to be kind of down on
- 18:10Speaker 3: his luck at the time, and it happened to be
- 18:13Speaker 3: Peter Frampton. Research that but that's what I heard on something.
- 18:18Speaker 3: I forget what it was, but that's a big thing
- 18:21Speaker 3: too later.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Curtis, I'd never heard that before. I'm not surprised Peter
- 18:27Speaker 1: Frampton backing up David Bowie. I could see Bowie throwing
- 18:30Speaker 1: throwing Frampton Frampton a bone there bring him on tour.
- 18:34Speaker 1: But you know, Curtis, I actually have a lot of
- 18:36Speaker 1: research I'm already doing, so I'm not I'm not going
- 18:38Speaker 1: to research that as you, as you so politely told
- 18:42Speaker 1: me to do. But if anyone else wants to check
- 18:44Speaker 1: that out and get back to Curtis and I hear,
- 18:45Speaker 1: we will gladly take your hard work and try and
- 18:48Speaker 1: figure this out. Did Peter Frampton support David Bowie after
- 18:52Speaker 1: Stevie Rayvaugh split from Bowie's band? If you want to
- 18:55Speaker 1: hear more about how Stevie Rayvaugh split, what it was
- 18:57Speaker 1: like playing with Bowie, all that stuff, you can listen.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Like I said to the All Access episode on Steve Ravan,
- 19:01Speaker 1: we got to become a member, all right. Regarding David Johansson,
- 19:04Speaker 1: this voicemail comes from the four one five.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Easy for you to say, Jake, Hey there, Michael Lean.
- 19:13Speaker 4: He's calling from San Francisco on cloudy Saturday afternoon. Just
- 19:21Speaker 4: got the news about the passing of David Johanson and
- 19:25Speaker 4: I am listening to your Dolls episode in a sort
- 19:29Speaker 4: of humble tribute to him. People say that when somebody passes,
- 19:35Speaker 4: somebody's oh, a bit of my childhood just passed, And
- 19:38Speaker 4: I really feel that way today. I mean, I was
- 19:41Speaker 4: one of a handful of people in my high school
- 19:43Speaker 4: who dug the Dolls. Even wrote about him in my
- 19:46Speaker 4: who school newspaper, and you know they were just you know,
- 19:49Speaker 4: no them, no pistols, no Ramones, no Green Day, you know,
- 19:54Speaker 4: none of that.
- 19:55Speaker 5: He was a gentleman and a spiritual scholar and a
- 20:00Speaker 5: scholar rather. You know, I really feel lucky to have
- 20:05Speaker 5: seen them at the Fillmore here in.
- 20:06Speaker 4: San Francisco in two thousand and five. Six well as
- 20:10Speaker 4: Samanson himself would say, let's just dance and uh, thanks
- 20:16Speaker 4: for what you guys do. Keep that Prenshaw's Facebook g
- 20:19Speaker 4: going all right.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Four one five Michael Lane, he thank you so much
- 20:22Speaker 1: for the for the call. Yeah, you nailed it. I
- 20:25Speaker 1: said pretty much the same thing at the top of
- 20:27Speaker 1: the show. I mean, I share your sentiments one hundred
- 20:28Speaker 1: percent on David Johansson and the influence that the New
- 20:30Speaker 1: York Dolls had, specifically that David had himself. He was
- 20:34Speaker 1: I believe the spark. Not to take anything away from
- 20:37Speaker 1: the other guys in the band, Johnny Thunders in particular,
- 20:39Speaker 1: but I appreciate your sentiment. I appreciate your call, appreciate
- 20:42Speaker 1: the emotion. We're all a little a little bit, a
- 20:44Speaker 1: little bit raw. After the death of David Johansson six
- 20:48Speaker 1: one seven, nine o six six six three eight. You
- 20:50Speaker 1: guys want to call me about anything, you want to
- 20:51Speaker 1: vent about anything going on in the world. You want
- 20:53Speaker 1: to commiserate with our grief over the passing of a
- 20:55Speaker 1: couple legends. We can do that as well. You can
- 20:57Speaker 1: hit me on text, you can hit me on voicemail
- 20:59Speaker 1: like Michael here and the others, you know, with the
- 21:01Speaker 1: David Johansson and Gene Hackman passing. I've talked very little
- 21:04Speaker 1: in the last few days, even in this podcast already.
- 21:07Speaker 1: I've talked very little about Dennis Hopper in the episode
- 21:09Speaker 1: that we had. So let's go to this voicemail here,
- 21:11Speaker 1: this one coming from the seven eight one back in Massachusetts.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Jake, what up? It's Ish, Hope Aul as well.
- 21:22Speaker 6: Regarding your question of the week, who is the most
- 21:26Speaker 6: rock and roll actor in Hollywood? I wouldn't say this
- 21:31Speaker 6: person is the most, but he's definitely a bit rock
- 21:35Speaker 6: and roll. I'm gonna go with Mickey Rourke. I don't
- 21:38Speaker 6: know something about him, just screams rock and roll.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Uh yeah, that's all I got. Hope Aul as well,
- 21:47Speaker 4: just go Ish.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Appreciate you man as always, thanks for the call. I
- 21:50Speaker 1: wonder what Dennis Hopper thought of Mickey Rourke. I think
- 21:52Speaker 1: he would share your sentiment there for sure. Mickey Rourke
- 21:55Speaker 1: is fantastic. Just what a force? What a force popa
- 22:00Speaker 1: Greenwich village? Please tell me you've all seen that. I
- 22:04Speaker 1: kind of want to rewatch that right now. Yeah, I
- 22:06Speaker 1: do ish. Thanks for reminding me, Mickey Rourke. Dennis Hopper
- 22:10Speaker 1: six one seven, nine oh six six six three eight
- 22:13Speaker 1: David Johansson, Wow, Gene Hackman, all the greats are coming
- 22:16Speaker 1: out to play today in this after party. Barry from
- 22:19Speaker 1: the nine oh four reference to our recent Scorsese episode. Hey,
- 22:22Speaker 1: my favorite filmmaker, and this one is tough, but I
- 22:24Speaker 1: gotta say Eastwood, same dude who directed Unforgiven, also with
- 22:29Speaker 1: Gene Hackman. Barry, thank you for the text, Guys, I'm
- 22:31Speaker 1: gonna rapid fire a bunch of these. I might not
- 22:33Speaker 1: read the entire text, but I want to get to
- 22:35Speaker 1: a bunch of stuff that I haven't gotten to in
- 22:36Speaker 1: a while. Jake, This is James from the three one
- 22:38Speaker 1: eight Stevie ray Vaughn episode. Was the very definition of
- 22:41Speaker 1: exquisite storytelling. Thanks James, appreciate that. James goes on to say,
- 22:45Speaker 1: as far as my favorite guitarist. I have two. First,
- 22:48Speaker 1: Paul Gilbert, not only is he a shredder of the
- 22:50Speaker 1: highest level, but the joy on his face as he
- 22:52Speaker 1: burns up and down the fret board reminds me of
- 22:54Speaker 1: why I love music in the first place. I love that.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Second is the recently passed Jordi Walker for the British
- 23:00Speaker 1: post punk act Killing Joke three point eight. Thanks for
- 23:02Speaker 1: the text. Appreciate you seven oh six right saying, hey there,
- 23:05Speaker 1: disgraceand folks. It seems like I can't get a break
- 23:07Speaker 1: from grief these last few years. It's started a few
- 23:10Speaker 1: years back by the loss of my father, and I
- 23:12Speaker 1: had your podcast to prop up my mind from going
- 23:14Speaker 1: to that dark place that we go to in grieving.
- 23:16Speaker 1: And this time it's a little different, but it hurts
- 23:18Speaker 1: just the same. My pet of almost twelve years sccumb
- 23:21Speaker 1: to lymphoma and that we've been fighting since around my
- 23:24Speaker 1: birthday in October, and all I have to say after
- 23:26Speaker 1: that is fuck cancer and anyone who openly opposes any
- 23:29Speaker 1: and all forms of treatment to possibly get a cure
- 23:31Speaker 1: for it. Love you guys, please keep it rolling. Seven
- 23:35Speaker 1: oh six. I'm sorry for your loss. That sucks. I
- 23:39Speaker 1: hope you're doing as well as you can be doing
- 23:42Speaker 1: with the news, and I hope you're enjoying connecting here
- 23:45Speaker 1: with the rest of the disco community here in the
- 23:47Speaker 1: after party. Hit us up elsewhere if you like. We're
- 23:49Speaker 1: on Instagram at Disgraceland Pod, We're on x and we
- 23:52Speaker 1: are on Facebook. Also, I don't know if you're in
- 23:54Speaker 1: the Patreon chat, hit us up there too. Three zero
- 23:56Speaker 1: two wearing the Disgraceland Rock and Roller shirt. Looks great,
- 23:59Speaker 1: look good, Keep it up. This one comes from the
- 24:02Speaker 1: three one nine. Hey, Jake, it's Jeremy from the three
- 24:04Speaker 1: one nine. Have you thought about making an app with
- 24:07Speaker 1: all your shows like Ashley Flowers has. That would be
- 24:10Speaker 1: cool and an easy way for people who miss bad
- 24:12Speaker 1: Lands when you start it back up, keep up the
- 24:14Speaker 1: great work. Three one nine. Appreciate the tip. Yeah, we've
- 24:20Speaker 1: thought about it, but we got something else cooking that
- 24:22Speaker 1: I'm going to talk to you about very shortly, Okay,
- 24:25Speaker 1: So just keep an ear glued to the after party,
- 24:28Speaker 1: all right, three one nine. You're gonna like what we
- 24:29Speaker 1: have to talk about. Lots of best director texts we
- 24:32Speaker 1: get two four eight coming in hot with Michael Mann
- 24:36Speaker 1: eight oh five, Scorsese, Kubrick, Kubrick, Kubrick. We should do
- 24:44Speaker 1: a Stanley Kubrick episode. That'd be great. Eight one eight, Right,
- 24:47Speaker 1: sim Jake, This is a little late, but I wanted
- 24:48Speaker 1: to tell you great work on the Scorsese Part two episode,
- 24:51Speaker 1: and your impression of Marty talking about taking out the
- 24:54Speaker 1: producer in the style that he was talking to Travis
- 24:56Speaker 1: Bickel while in the cab was pretty fresh.
- 25:00Speaker 5: Here.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I'll just say that, along with some of the obvious
- 25:02Speaker 1: ones like Scorsese, I gotta put Spike Lee and Guy
- 25:04Speaker 1: Ritchie on the fave director's list. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I
- 25:08Speaker 1: love Spike Lee's movies. I really really truly do. Guy
- 25:11Speaker 1: Ritchie not as much, but I just haven't spent enough
- 25:15Speaker 1: time with them. I will at some point something I
- 25:18Speaker 1: look forward to. One more here eight oh eight. In
- 25:20Speaker 1: regard to the question of the greatest guitarists, I'll answer
- 25:23Speaker 1: my personal favorite is Nuno Bettencourt. Nuno from Hudson, Massachusetts,
- 25:29Speaker 1: my old neck of the woods. All right, guy six
- 25:31Speaker 1: one seven nine six six six three eight voicemail and text.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Gr Twardowski writes on Instagram, good afternoon, I heard a
- 25:40Speaker 1: conspiracy theory this morning that Mindy McCready didn't commit suicide,
- 25:45Speaker 1: but that she and her husband were murdered due to
- 25:49Speaker 1: excessive debt. Have you ever heard that? No, I have not,
- 25:53Speaker 1: and I am I don't know. Should I be embarrassed
- 25:56Speaker 1: to say that I don't know who Mindy McCready is.
- 25:58Speaker 1: When you said Mindy McCready, the thought of Mike McCready
- 26:01Speaker 1: from Pearl Jam. But Mike McCready, last I checked, is
- 26:03Speaker 1: still very much alive. I don't know who you're talking about.
- 26:05Speaker 1: If anyone knows who this is or what this is about,
- 26:07Speaker 1: and if it's worth looking into, let me know. I
- 26:10Speaker 1: am in no ways supporting this so called conspiracy theory.
- 26:13Speaker 1: I am in no way saying that I think it's
- 26:15Speaker 1: even a conspiracy theory or that there's any validity to
- 26:17Speaker 1: it at all. It's just something that just popped up
- 26:19Speaker 1: immediately here in my feed, Sorry my dms, and I'm
- 26:22Speaker 1: asking you guys, if you know anything about it, so
- 26:24Speaker 1: hey me at Disgrace lampod on Instagram, at Disgrace lampod
- 26:28Speaker 1: on X, at Disgrace lampod on Facebook, follow us everywhere,
- 26:33Speaker 1: get all of our content. I communicate all over the place,
- 26:36Speaker 1: Paul G. Bateman on Facebook. Right, Hey Jake, it's me
- 26:39Speaker 1: PGB from the eight four to three, your friendly neighborhood
- 26:41Speaker 1: sports therapist and personal trainer. I just watched the documentary
- 26:44Speaker 1: on sly Stone and I have to say it was
- 26:45Speaker 1: the perfect compliment to your episode. Between the two, I
- 26:48Speaker 1: feel like I have a better look at the whole picture.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Thanks for the hard work ass always. You asked me
- 26:52Speaker 1: about the difference in hot tub and sauna and they
- 26:55Speaker 1: are huge. I'm not going to go into the rest here,
- 26:58Speaker 1: but let me just say, Paul, I appreciate the info
- 27:01Speaker 1: on hot tubs and Sunnah. Okay. Six one seven nine
- 27:05Speaker 1: six six six three eight At Disgraceland Pod. Next week's
- 27:08Speaker 1: question of the week, who's your favorite Irish band? Your
- 27:10Speaker 1: favorite band from Ireland? I want to know? Six one
- 27:12Speaker 1: seven nine six six six three eight voicemail text at
- 27:15Speaker 1: Disgraceland Pod on the Socials. I'll be back in a flash.
- 27:32Speaker 1: All right, welcome back. Disgraceland's Story of the week can
- 27:35Speaker 1: be any story from your rock and roll past or
- 27:37Speaker 1: from rock and roll history in general that you think
- 27:40Speaker 1: best represents the rock and roll spirit, and then you
- 27:42Speaker 1: want to share with us and then we share it
- 27:44Speaker 1: on the internet. Okay, we've been posting these on Instagram
- 27:47Speaker 1: doing these little carousel stories sort of celebrate you guys
- 27:51Speaker 1: and all the all the rock and roll animalism that
- 27:53Speaker 1: you've gotten up to in the past. Disgracelandpod at gmail
- 27:56Speaker 1: dot com is how to get your story of the
- 27:58Speaker 1: week to us. You can also call or send a text,
- 28:01Speaker 1: but email seems to be the right medium for this.
- 28:04Speaker 1: This week's story of the Week comes from mister Joe Cromley.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Joe writes saying, Hey, this story is secondhand told to
- 28:12Speaker 1: me by the late mister Kim Davis, high school friend
- 28:16Speaker 1: of my former wife. He sadly died of a lifestyle
- 28:18Speaker 1: related disease. I have attempted to contact two of the
- 28:21Speaker 1: other parties in the story for verification and have not
- 28:24Speaker 1: heard back. Here goes. In January nineteen seventy seven, Kim
- 28:27Speaker 1: Davis was day drinking at an Atlanta strip club named Tattletale,
- 28:31Speaker 1: which is still open. There was hardly anyone in the
- 28:34Speaker 1: place and a group of very loud, oddly dressed people
- 28:37Speaker 1: came in. Kim ended up speaking with some of them
- 28:40Speaker 1: who were clearly British. Kim, you all from England. Guy. Yes,
- 28:44Speaker 1: we've never been to America. We've never really been anywhere.
- 28:46Speaker 1: We just got here, Kim. So what are you doing here, guy?
- 28:49Speaker 1: While we're in a band and we're playing a show tonight? Kim, Really,
- 28:51Speaker 1: what's your band called, guy? We're called the sex Pistols.
- 28:54Speaker 1: The band played their first US show at a venue
- 28:56Speaker 1: called the Great Southeast Music Hall, which was in a
- 28:59Speaker 1: strip center next to a bowling alley and a kmart,
- 29:02Speaker 1: just up the street from the Tattletale on Piedmont Avenue,
- 29:05Speaker 1: And they were staying in a two story motel called
- 29:07Speaker 1: Squire in more or less across the parking lot from
- 29:10Speaker 1: the Tattletale, and they were killing time before the show
- 29:12Speaker 1: at the nearest bar, and the girls there are still hot.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Told to me by Kim. I wish I could verify it.
- 29:17Speaker 1: If you know how to reach John Lyden or Steve Jones,
- 29:19Speaker 1: I'd love to have it corroborated. Thanks Joe, Atlanta, Joe
- 29:23Speaker 1: appreciate it. And you know, I often say the story
- 29:26Speaker 1: of the week is to support the preservation of the
- 29:30Speaker 1: rock and roll animal, the spirit of the rock and
- 29:32Speaker 1: roll animal. And I gotta say killing time at a
- 29:34Speaker 1: strip club in the afternoon on tour for a rock
- 29:37Speaker 1: and roll band is about as rock and roll as
- 29:40Speaker 1: it gets. So without the verification, I'm already believing this
- 29:44Speaker 1: just based on the details that you've provided here. But hey,
- 29:47Speaker 1: if we get a Steve Jones or John Lydon and
- 29:51Speaker 1: I've talked to John Lyden in the past, and I
- 29:52Speaker 1: was actually pitched on having Glenn Mattlock on the show
- 29:55Speaker 1: a while back and I just never followed up. I
- 29:58Speaker 1: feel bad about that now that I think about it,
- 30:00Speaker 1: But if I ever talked to a sex fistle, I'll
- 30:01Speaker 1: be sure to bring up the Tttletale. So thank you
- 30:03Speaker 1: so much, Joe. Guys, hit me with your story of
- 30:05Speaker 1: the week email all right, Disgrace slampod at gmail dot
- 30:08Speaker 1: com and you might get it read here on air.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Appreciate it, and then, like I said, Joe, keep an
- 30:11Speaker 1: eye on Instagram tomorrow, we'll have something up and we'll
- 30:13Speaker 1: be name checking you and the Tattletale. All right. If
- 30:16Speaker 1: you want to help the show out, you can do
- 30:18Speaker 1: so by leaving a review on Apple Podcasts and or Spotify.
- 30:21Speaker 1: As you know, the reviews helped the show with discovery
- 30:23Speaker 1: and every week I read a review and if I
- 30:25Speaker 1: read your review, and you get in touch with me,
- 30:27Speaker 1: we will send you some merch. So this one comes
- 30:28Speaker 1: from Pure Sarah Sue. Pure Sarah Sue, show you how
- 30:33Speaker 1: diplomatic I am. This is not a good review, Pure
- 30:35Speaker 1: Sarah Ssoue writes in all the stories are about dudes,
- 30:39Speaker 1: no bad girls allowed. I guess Pure Sarah Sue is understandably.
- 30:42Speaker 1: I'veset about this, Pure Sarah Sue. I've said this before
- 30:46Speaker 1: and I'll say it again. There just isn't all that
- 30:49Speaker 1: much true crime from women in the world of music.
- 30:53Speaker 1: We've covered a lot as much as I think we can,
- 30:56Speaker 1: and there's still more we can do. And I say this,
- 30:58Speaker 1: I read this review on purpose today because I'm in
- 31:01Speaker 1: the middle of researching the Go Gos for a Go
- 31:04Speaker 1: Gos episode that will be out in a couple months. So,
- 31:06Speaker 1: Pure Sarahsu, if you're listening, if you're still with us,
- 31:10Speaker 1: get pumped. Get pumped for that Go Gos episode, all right.
- 31:13Speaker 1: And I think to all the women out there, it
- 31:14Speaker 1: says something about you that you haven't behaved throughout the
- 31:19Speaker 1: past and music history like as badly as men. I
- 31:23Speaker 1: just I think that's a positive. It may result in
- 31:25Speaker 1: a less well rounded podcast, but I think you know
- 31:29Speaker 1: on you know, on balance for humanity's sake. Anyways, it's
- 31:32Speaker 1: a good thing. Over on Spotify, Knackers, this isn't a review,
- 31:36Speaker 1: but Nackers, I still want you to hit me up
- 31:40Speaker 1: because I like how you're doing this over here on
- 31:42Speaker 1: the comments section and Spotify. Nackers is answering the question
- 31:45Speaker 1: of we prompted from the Dennis Hopper episode, which is
- 31:49Speaker 1: who is the most rock and roll actor from Hollywood?
- 31:53Speaker 1: And Nackers writes in Charlie Sheen and the discussion, you know,
- 31:57Speaker 1: hard to argue with that one. Hard, hard to argue
- 32:00Speaker 1: with that behavior. I don't even know if the only
- 32:02Speaker 1: you can argue that is to argue was that behavior
- 32:04Speaker 1: even rock and roll? Or was it just so fricking
- 32:06Speaker 1: over the top we can't even categorize it. Charlie Sheen
- 32:09Speaker 1: still alive. I think he's got a new series coming out,
- 32:11Speaker 1: or it's out or something six one seven nine oh
- 32:14Speaker 1: six six six three eight cent a voicemail, lead me
- 32:16Speaker 1: a text. You can leave a review for the show
- 32:18Speaker 1: on Apple Podcasts and or Spotify. We really appreciated this episode.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Guys.
- 32:21Speaker 1: It's coming to an end, but the after party, it's
- 32:23Speaker 1: going to continue for the All Access members. Okay, remember
- 32:26Speaker 1: earlier I was talking about that Stevie Ravond episode. You
- 32:29Speaker 1: might heard me sneak in there that you also, in
- 32:31Speaker 1: addition to getting that extra bonus episode per month, like
- 32:35Speaker 1: the Stevie Ravond episode, you also get a little bit
- 32:38Speaker 1: more of the bonus after party, and that's about to
- 32:40Speaker 1: start right now. For our All Access members five bucks
- 32:43Speaker 1: a month, you also get commercial free listening. I can't
- 32:45Speaker 1: forget that. I don't know, but if you ask me,
- 32:47Speaker 1: that's a good way to spend five dollars. All right.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I know we all don't have an extra five bucks
- 32:53Speaker 1: sitting around, but if you do, go over to Disgrace
- 32:55Speaker 1: sampod dot com slash membership and sign up to become
- 32:57Speaker 1: an All Access member. We appreciate. All Right, we are back.
- 33:21Speaker 1: We mentioned a couple of different archive episodes in this
- 33:23Speaker 1: here Bonus app talked obviously about David Johansson, So New
- 33:28Speaker 1: York Dolls, talked about the Ramones, talked about you two.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Who am I forgetting? I'm not sure, but for those
- 33:34Speaker 1: three episodes, Matt's gonna have the archive information, the episode information.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Excuse me on these archive episodes in the show notes
- 33:41Speaker 1: for this here bonus EPs, So if you guys want
- 33:43Speaker 1: to find those, you'll be able to find them. All right,
- 33:45Speaker 1: I want your story, Call me, I want your story
- 33:47Speaker 1: of the week. Okay, text me call me six one
- 33:49Speaker 1: seven nine o six six six three eight, or text me,
- 33:52Speaker 1: leave me a voicemail, hit me up at Disgrace sam Pod.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Give me your story of rock and roll animalism, either
