Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Thanks for tuning into Heavy today. Today we've got a
- 0:02Speaker 1: very special interview for you with Andre Joise, the man
- 0:05Speaker 1: who took up the sticks for Sinsanem after the tragic
- 0:08Speaker 1: loss of Joey Jordison in twenty twenty one. And so
- 0:11Speaker 1: a little known fact is that Andre and Joey were
- 0:14Speaker 1: close friends as well, with Andre having been Joey's drum
- 0:17Speaker 1: checks ince twenty eighteen. So it's a story that must
- 0:20Speaker 1: be both pleasurable and difficult for Andre to talk about.
- 0:23Speaker 1: So Heavy is honored and proud to broach his subject
- 0:26Speaker 1: today with you. So Andre, thanks for joining us.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, you're very welcome. It's a pleasure to speak to
- 0:32Speaker 2: you and do this with you for sure.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Very nice. So in June this year, you were revealed
- 0:37Speaker 1: as a drummer for Sinsanem, along with the announcement of
- 0:40Speaker 1: the band's new album in Devastation. So firstly, that must
- 0:44Speaker 1: have been a life change and experience for you.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah, man, it was because I spent the biggest part
- 0:53Speaker 2: of the last three years secretly working on it without
- 0:56Speaker 2: being able to tell anyone such a huge thing as well,
- 1:00Speaker 2: So it was well now it feels like it was
- 1:04Speaker 2: just today, but it was three years of emotional roller
- 1:10Speaker 2: coaster with stuff that was going on. It was definitely
- 1:13Speaker 2: a one to remember for life, the greatest experience of
- 1:16Speaker 2: my life.
- 1:17Speaker 1: But you and you, we mentioned you'd known for three years.
- 1:20Speaker 1: The official announcement was made in June, but three years
- 1:23Speaker 1: before that you knew. So what was the thought process
- 1:26Speaker 1: behind holding off selling the world and how hard was
- 1:28Speaker 1: it for you not to shout it from the roofshops
- 1:31Speaker 1: and say yes, I'm joining.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Well, I think the hardest part for me I didn't
- 1:39Speaker 2: think too much about the announcement and all that stuff
- 1:42Speaker 2: my my.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Especially for the first two years.
- 1:45Speaker 2: It was just it was mostly about doing a good job,
- 1:48Speaker 2: making sure I got the job, making sure I didn't
- 1:52Speaker 2: let Fred down and that I was and I worked
- 1:56Speaker 2: a lot to get my drumming up to standard, tried
- 2:00Speaker 2: my best at least because obviously it's the biggest shoes
- 2:04Speaker 2: to fill. So I think the hardest part wasn't holding
- 2:08Speaker 2: off the announcement. It was really just making sure that
- 2:12Speaker 2: everything was done as best as I could, So that
- 2:16Speaker 2: was my priority. I wasn't really thinking so much about
- 2:18Speaker 2: the rest, at least first time.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And of course Joey Jordison was the original and only
- 2:24Speaker 1: drama ever forced insane m So I imagine that would
- 2:27Speaker 1: have also played a part in in the laying the announcement,
- 2:29Speaker 1: just making sure the timing was right.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, well that that was That was more with
- 2:35Speaker 2: Fred in the record label and all that stuff management.
- 2:39Speaker 3: But the announcing party was of course because there was
- 2:44Speaker 3: Joey and obviously the most famous.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Drummer of his generation, and you want to get you
- 2:50Speaker 2: want to do things right.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Also, again, it wasn't so much about oh, here's the
- 2:56Speaker 3: guy who's gonna replace, So it was more.
- 2:57Speaker 2: About like since saying them new music and getting all
- 3:02Speaker 2: of that done right, and you know, you want to
- 3:06Speaker 2: tell the world like essentially the band is going, the
- 3:09Speaker 2: band is alive. This is what Joey would have wanted.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Here's a new album and here's the new music. So
- 3:14Speaker 2: I'm not entirely sure that the drummer situation was the
- 3:18Speaker 2: most important one there. You know, it was all about okay,
- 3:21Speaker 2: here's new music, blah. But there's no point you know,
- 3:26Speaker 2: just giving little bits of news every now and then.
- 3:29Speaker 2: It doesn't work like that with all the bands, especially
- 3:32Speaker 2: not with us because we're not exactly a TikTok band.
- 3:35Speaker 2: So for us, it was all about, Okay, the first
- 3:37Speaker 2: announcement that comes out is here's a new drummer, but
- 3:40Speaker 2: here's the new music and here's the new album.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Coming up too, So that was the priority for sure.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and it goes with outside made that Joey left
- 3:47Speaker 1: Massive boots a field, but it meant much more to
- 3:50Speaker 1: you personally than just taking over a spot in a band,
- 3:53Speaker 1: didn't it.
- 3:54Speaker 3: One hundred percent? It was very emotional. Let's start because.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Of course, you know, Joey was my hero when I
- 4:03Speaker 2: was young. He was He changed my drumming when I
- 4:06Speaker 2: was just a kid in Portugal. I remember exactly where
- 4:10Speaker 2: I was when I when I first listened to Slipnot
- 4:12Speaker 2: and Boom.
- 4:13Speaker 3: How that changed my mind.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I thought, like, okay, superman is real and he plays
- 4:17Speaker 2: the drums for this band, you know like that.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I still remember that. So yeah, he was a huge
- 4:25Speaker 3: influence to me.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I think the first thing I couldn't believe was seven
- 4:29Speaker 2: or eight years ago when I when I got called
- 4:32Speaker 2: to work with Sinsane and when Fred asked me if
- 4:34Speaker 2: I wanted to do that, I was I was going
- 4:37Speaker 2: to be just a tour manager and the drum tech
- 4:40Speaker 2: for Joey, which obviously was a huge deal. But I
- 4:44Speaker 2: was so busy on all the tours that I had.
- 4:46Speaker 2: I was working with Dragon for Incredible Filth at the
- 4:49Speaker 2: time as well, so I was very busy. And when
- 4:51Speaker 2: the time came a few weeks before the tour, I
- 4:53Speaker 2: was like, holy fuck.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I'm going to be Joey, you know, and I'm going
- 4:57Speaker 3: to work with him. It's incredible.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And then today before the tour, Fred called me and said,
- 5:03Speaker 2: by the way, that we have this song with percussions,
- 5:05Speaker 2: so you're going to play that, and I'm.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Like, holy fuck, I'm gonna play alongside Joey.
- 5:10Speaker 2: This is crazy, you know, just you know, out of
- 5:14Speaker 2: this world kind of stuff dreamland. And eventually I got
- 5:19Speaker 2: to know him, and obviously, if you know Joey, he
- 5:23Speaker 2: was you know, there was zero arrogance in him. He
- 5:26Speaker 2: was the nicest guy. You know, everyone says that about everyone,
- 5:30Speaker 2: but it's true. He really was the nicest guy and
- 5:32Speaker 2: the easiest fucking celebrity I've ever known to work with.
- 5:37Speaker 2: You know, just everything was always good, and very quickly
- 5:40Speaker 2: we went from colleagues to friends because that you know,
- 5:44Speaker 2: that's how he was.
- 5:44Speaker 3: He was that kind of guy. So yeah, and you know,
- 5:50Speaker 3: when he.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Passed away, I was just completely devastated for all the reasons.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And the last thing that crossed my mind is that
- 5:58Speaker 2: I would be.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Asked to do it.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I swear on my life, it didn't even cross my mind.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I always just thought, you know, if that happened, it
- 6:05Speaker 2: would have to be some huge drummer, celebrity guy to
- 6:09Speaker 2: take over. So and it wasn't immediately, by the way,
- 6:13Speaker 2: when he passed away. It was quite a long time
- 6:16Speaker 2: after that.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I was, you know, I was. It was during the pandemic.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I was actually going through my lowest because it was
- 6:25Speaker 2: during the pandemic and I tour for a living for
- 6:27Speaker 2: many years, so for me, it was like, okay, I
- 6:29Speaker 2: have nothing. And that's when, you know, I was practicing
- 6:34Speaker 2: some Lamb of God covers and and Fred saw that
- 6:38Speaker 2: he saw me play a fast song and he reached out,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and yeah, I just couldn't believe it. So, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 2: I still can't believe the whole thing. It's it's the
- 6:49Speaker 2: greatest honor of my life. You know, seeing my name
- 6:54Speaker 2: and his name and the same sentence still means the
- 6:58Speaker 2: world to me and forever, you know, it's I'm in
- 7:02Speaker 2: my forties now and I've definitely realized now that all
- 7:06Speaker 2: I ever wanted was to do something special and there's
- 7:08Speaker 2: nothing more special than this.
- 7:09Speaker 3: So yeah, that's incredible.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Oh no, no, you sort of touch on this might
- 7:13Speaker 1: just before. But you first met Joey in late twenty
- 7:16Speaker 1: eighteen at the first day of pre production and thought,
- 7:20Speaker 1: do you remember how you felt like we were nervous?
- 7:22Speaker 1: Were you excited?
- 7:24Speaker 3: I remember as if it was yesterday. It was. It
- 7:28Speaker 3: was in France on first pre production day rehearsal.
- 7:30Speaker 2: I arrived, the band was already in the rehearsal space,
- 7:35Speaker 2: and when I got there, Fred came out, I had
- 7:38Speaker 2: my bags.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Fred came out and he looked at me.
- 7:41Speaker 2: You know, we never really talked too much about the
- 7:44Speaker 2: Joey factor, as in, oh my god, you're going to
- 7:47Speaker 2: work for joe It was, you know, it was just like, Okay,
- 7:49Speaker 2: I'm going to go onto my job knowing fully well,
- 7:53Speaker 2: like he knows that I'm a huge fan of Joey.
- 7:57Speaker 3: We just turn't speak much about that.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Obviously, it's a job, and that was the tour manager,
- 8:02Speaker 2: so I couldn't really let Joey know that I was
- 8:05Speaker 2: a huge fan so that that was the top priority.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Like I kept telling myself on the whole journey there,
- 8:13Speaker 2: like you cannot show that that you cannot you got
- 8:17Speaker 2: you're the tour manager. Joey cannot know that you're a
- 8:20Speaker 2: huge fan boy. So I got there. I'm outside the
- 8:25Speaker 2: room with my bags and Fred comes out and he
- 8:28Speaker 2: just looked at me and he said, he's over there,
- 8:31Speaker 2: and they're knowing fully well, but I'm nervous as fun.
- 8:34Speaker 3: My hero he's just over there like all right, here,
- 8:37Speaker 3: I go, hello, mate, how's it going? And then I
- 8:41Speaker 3: just walked in. I started speaking to Joey like I
- 8:44Speaker 3: didn't know who he was, and I pretending, you know,
- 8:46Speaker 3: he man, yeah, so how's it going.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yeah, let's set up your drums then, and uh and
- 8:51Speaker 2: he was just really nice and easy to you know,
- 8:53Speaker 2: to do everything with.
- 8:55Speaker 3: So yeah, I perfectly remember.
- 8:58Speaker 2: And we started setting up his drums straight away, just
- 9:02Speaker 2: him and I and just you know, talking like.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Two normal people.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And this process took two or three hours at some point,
- 9:11Speaker 2: so I was already pasted.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Okay, I've just met my hero part.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So I was on work mode and I you know,
- 9:19Speaker 2: the kids was already so I was like, Joey, do
- 9:21Speaker 2: you mind sitting there.
- 9:22Speaker 3: And trying it, trying trying your kid?
- 9:25Speaker 2: And he did, and I remember I was I was
- 9:27Speaker 2: looking somewhere else and Joey hit the snare, you know,
- 9:32Speaker 2: like his his snare, you know, brah, And immediately I
- 9:35Speaker 2: felt like, holy fuck, this is the guy I've been
- 9:38Speaker 2: listening to my whole life.
- 9:39Speaker 3: This is Joey Jordison. I can try to do.
- 9:42Speaker 2: The hit the snare, flamm anyone in the world you
- 9:46Speaker 2: can hit the snare, you will not sound like Joey.
- 9:48Speaker 3: This is his hands. Okay, So that moment, I.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Was like, fuck, this is the affable to slip dot
- 9:53Speaker 2: album since my hear you know.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yeah, So that that was really really special, you know,
- 9:59Speaker 3: just unique. Again, I'll never not be grateful for this opportunity.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Okay, Joey's drumming was outstanding, as we all know. But
- 10:07Speaker 1: you were the best seed in the house night after night.
- 10:10Speaker 1: So what was so general about the way he play?
- 10:12Speaker 3: Do you think personality?
- 10:15Speaker 2: You know, I think that, which is part of what's
- 10:17Speaker 2: lacking on modern drummers. You know, everyone sounds the same.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Joey sounds like Joey. That's it, you know, he has
- 10:24Speaker 2: his style well. First of all, he revolutionized the world
- 10:27Speaker 2: of metal drumming. Sometimes people, you know, younger people may
- 10:30Speaker 2: not know that, but Joey was the drummer that everyone
- 10:34Speaker 2: in my age looked up to. He changed the world
- 10:38Speaker 2: of drumming. Like I was a new metal basic drummer
- 10:42Speaker 2: before I first heard Slipknot, and immediately the goalpost changed
- 10:45Speaker 2: by hearing Joey, you know, and the same as it
- 10:48Speaker 2: was to me, I'm sure there was two millions of
- 10:50Speaker 2: people around the world. In fact, on this insaneem tour.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I got a glimpse of what Joey's life was like,
- 10:59Speaker 2: and every day hundreds of fans just wanted to tell
- 11:03Speaker 2: him that they started playing drums because of him. So
- 11:06Speaker 2: you know, it's you cannot compare Joey to anyone else. Okay,
- 11:09Speaker 2: he was a revolutionary drummer, changed metal.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Drumming for goods.
- 11:13Speaker 2: But yeah, it was at that moment when I heard
- 11:15Speaker 2: him hit the snare the first time, the simplest thing, right,
- 11:19Speaker 2: as a fun that's Joey's orbison. Okay, So yeah, that's
- 11:24Speaker 2: that was I think what was more special about his
- 11:27Speaker 2: drumming nowadays is that he still sounded like himself.
- 11:31Speaker 3: You know that that's what it is.
- 11:32Speaker 2: But at the time, it was just he revolutionized metal
- 11:35Speaker 2: by incorporating loads of different styles and doing things that
- 11:39Speaker 2: hadn't been done.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Until he came out, you know.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And I got to know through through our tour that
- 11:46Speaker 2: he was a marching band drummer and this is where
- 11:49Speaker 2: a lot of a lot of his ideas came from.
- 11:52Speaker 3: And you can tell him slip note, Yeah for sure. Yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So yeah, I had the pleasure of speaking with Joey
- 11:59Speaker 1: watched myself. Then if he was the second or third
- 12:01Speaker 1: interview I ever did, and to this day, I would
- 12:03Speaker 1: have done down insane and to this day he's still
- 12:06Speaker 1: the most eloquent, well spoken, nicest guys over interviewed. So
- 12:11Speaker 1: no one would have been a pleasure. Yeah.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Man, it's just just like talking to you. You know,
- 12:17Speaker 2: there was nothing there was He never let anything out.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It was like, hey man, I'm a big deal. No,
- 12:24Speaker 2: it was like talking to your friends, you know. It
- 12:26Speaker 2: was Bob, It.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Was it was just I don't know. His parents did
- 12:30Speaker 3: a great job at raising.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Him because he was he was literally a super cool guy,
- 12:34Speaker 2: you know, someone who deserved all the success that he
- 12:37Speaker 2: had and all the good things that came his way.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Yeah, so tell us a bit more about Joey the
- 12:43Speaker 1: person rather than Jerry the musician, because you would have
- 12:46Speaker 1: been in a unique position to know him like a
- 12:48Speaker 1: few others would have.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Well, I guess I met him.
- 12:54Speaker 2: He was already he had already gone through a lot,
- 12:58Speaker 2: you know, by the time I met him, he had
- 13:00Speaker 2: had his years and slip Not and being on top
- 13:04Speaker 2: of the world, and he had already left slip Not
- 13:08Speaker 2: and done a few other things, and he was in
- 13:10Speaker 2: a different place than when we met. But essentially he
- 13:15Speaker 2: was the most positive person you could you could meet,
- 13:19Speaker 2: you know, and not just a positive vibe. Always it
- 13:23Speaker 2: was all about love and stuff and a really friendly person.
- 13:28Speaker 2: He knew that a small gesture from him meant the
- 13:31Speaker 2: world to me or to any of his fans, and
- 13:35Speaker 2: so he did it all the time.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Okay, he really always.
- 13:39Speaker 2: I think it was the first thing on his mind,
- 13:41Speaker 2: like making sure that if if he could do something
- 13:44Speaker 2: to make someone's day, he would.
- 13:47Speaker 3: A really, really, really good person. And then it was
- 13:49Speaker 3: incredibly passionate about music.
- 13:51Speaker 2: You want to get Joey talking, you talk about Marvin
- 13:54Speaker 2: Angel or whatever.
- 13:55Speaker 3: You know, weing up a name of a band. Then
- 13:57Speaker 3: there you go.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Properly just a music fan, a fan boy, and then
- 14:01Speaker 2: as a person again, funny guy, sense of humor culture,
- 14:07Speaker 2: especially musically speaking, is incredible, his musical knowledge. And yeah,
- 14:13Speaker 2: it's a really positive person, really easy to work with,
- 14:16Speaker 2: a lovely guy with a great heart. And it's a
- 14:19Speaker 2: very sad loss.
- 14:22Speaker 1: And you worked with Joey right up until his last
- 14:24Speaker 1: gig was Inside. I'm right, how long before that was
- 14:27Speaker 1: he passed? And what are your lasting memories of that
- 14:29Speaker 1: part or show you worked with him?
- 14:32Speaker 3: Oh, I can't talk about that.
- 14:34Speaker 2: I think I do have a memory some strong memories
- 14:38Speaker 2: from that last show, our goodbye is It was very
- 14:42Speaker 2: it was all very emotional, but I don't think I
- 14:44Speaker 2: should talk about it too much, so I'll leave it
- 14:48Speaker 2: at that.
- 14:48Speaker 3: That is the last memory I do remember.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Perfectly well, the last show, and I remember how we
- 14:53Speaker 2: said goodbye.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Let's just say that was a.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Hugging and crying at the time, and there was a
- 14:58Speaker 2: lot going on behind the scenes.
- 15:02Speaker 3: So yeah, it was sad.
- 15:04Speaker 2: But we stayed in touch after that, so checking up
- 15:07Speaker 2: on him, making sure he was good.
- 15:10Speaker 1: So with you now in sinsay and I'm like, how
- 15:12Speaker 1: much of Joey is drumming do you see in yourself,
- 15:15Speaker 1: like have you taken a bit of that style on
- 15:17Speaker 1: with them?
- 15:20Speaker 2: Well, that's a that's not a very simple question because
- 15:24Speaker 2: on one hand, if Joey hadn't existed as a drummer
- 15:28Speaker 2: in Slip Now, I wouldn't be the drummer than I
- 15:30Speaker 2: am today.
- 15:31Speaker 3: So he had a direct influence on my drumming when
- 15:33Speaker 3: I was younger.
- 15:34Speaker 2: So when I was eighteen nineteen, you know, and throughout
- 15:37Speaker 2: the period that he was in Slipnot that my life
- 15:40Speaker 2: was essentially waiting for the next Slipnote album so I
- 15:43Speaker 2: could learn more.
- 15:44Speaker 3: So I didn't go to music school. My music school
- 15:46Speaker 3: was Slipnot.
- 15:47Speaker 2: And other bands like that, you know, so the new
- 15:50Speaker 2: album would be who a new book for me to learn.
- 15:54Speaker 2: So overall, in general, I think Joey had a huge
- 15:57Speaker 2: influence on my drumming what he did, But in regards
- 16:03Speaker 2: to Insaneo, I think not as much because when this
- 16:08Speaker 2: whole thing came about, like you know, it was I
- 16:14Speaker 2: don't know if we're going to talk about the process,
- 16:16Speaker 2: but it was.
- 16:18Speaker 3: It was very complicated.
- 16:19Speaker 2: But at some point Fred had to tell me just
- 16:24Speaker 2: listen to the music. And play drums to the music
- 16:26Speaker 2: and stop thinking stressing out about who you're taking over from,
- 16:31Speaker 2: you know, because it wasn't helping at some point, so
- 16:34Speaker 2: you know, it was just a lot of pressure. But
- 16:39Speaker 2: Fred said the right thing is just you know, ignore that,
- 16:42Speaker 2: listen to the songs and play with the song's need.
- 16:46Speaker 3: And yeah, that was the best thing Fred did. It
- 16:49Speaker 3: really helped me out. And once he said that, I
- 16:51Speaker 3: was more relaxed.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I had to remove the Joey factor in terms of that,
- 16:55Speaker 2: and that a part as a part of that process.
- 16:58Speaker 2: The song writing, well thes were written by Fred, but
- 17:01Speaker 2: he came to Portugal so we could work on the parts.
- 17:04Speaker 3: And yeah, you know, I was very concerned for the first.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Few months of like, my god, Joey, people are going
- 17:11Speaker 2: to be comparing me to him and this is you know, uncomparable,
- 17:14Speaker 2: so you don't you know, I dreaded those comparisons because
- 17:19Speaker 2: because the internet is a horrible place. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 17:24Speaker 2: but no, at the end it all worked out well.
- 17:27Speaker 2: But yeah, it was very important that that friend said,
- 17:31Speaker 2: forget that, listen to the songs as if they're just
- 17:35Speaker 2: you know, our songs with you on drums, just do that,
- 17:38Speaker 2: focus on that and that was a huge help. After that,
- 17:41Speaker 2: I did manage to focus and become more productive with
- 17:45Speaker 2: the whole thing and tracking the album and all.
- 17:49Speaker 1: You touched on this a little bit before, mate, But
- 17:51Speaker 1: given the fact that everything we've spoken about, the fact
- 17:53Speaker 1: that why good friends, you've looked out to Joey, everything,
- 17:56Speaker 1: all that like was a decision to join us and
- 17:58Speaker 1: sign an easy one you and what sort of fact
- 18:01Speaker 1: is did you have to consider before signing yes or no?
- 18:05Speaker 2: To me, there was no decision to be made, you know,
- 18:09Speaker 2: the second Fred asked that for the second friend, I
- 18:13Speaker 2: got a message from Fred. He all he said was like,
- 18:16Speaker 2: I wonder what's insane and would sound like?
- 18:18Speaker 3: Would you on drums? And so?
- 18:22Speaker 2: And it was very complicated because the band wasn't auditioning
- 18:29Speaker 2: other drummers. It was just either I can do it
- 18:32Speaker 2: or I can't, and that's worse. I would rather, you know,
- 18:35Speaker 2: I think you'd rather Yeah, you'd rather lose to someone
- 18:39Speaker 2: who's a better drummer. Then then I have a chance
- 18:42Speaker 2: that's all yours. And then you suck it up so
- 18:45Speaker 2: that I think there's a lot more pressure. There's a
- 18:46Speaker 2: lot more pressure on that, you know, And and yeah,
- 18:51Speaker 2: so for me, it wasn't there was no decision to
- 18:53Speaker 2: be made. I got the message from Fred and and
- 18:58Speaker 2: at the time I was like, okay, well you either
- 19:01Speaker 2: you can either, I said to myself, you either accomplish
- 19:04Speaker 2: this or you give up and you're a piece of shit, You're.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Useless drummer, you know.
- 19:08Speaker 2: So that's the standard I put You're either you're either
- 19:10Speaker 2: a ship drummer or you got this and you've put
- 19:12Speaker 2: everything into that.
- 19:15Speaker 3: So that's what I did.
- 19:16Speaker 2: And so at the time I immediately changed my life
- 19:20Speaker 2: around this. So whatever I was doing, I have helped
- 19:24Speaker 2: from my family because as I said, it was during
- 19:26Speaker 2: the pandemic and I and it was a very rough
- 19:29Speaker 2: time for me, the worst.
- 19:30Speaker 3: I have lost everything.
- 19:32Speaker 2: So my family helped me out, and immediately I changed
- 19:35Speaker 2: my daily schedule to whatever I was doing. That's all over.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Now I do six hours a day of drumming my
- 19:42Speaker 2: fucking ass of trying to get faster and trying to
- 19:45Speaker 2: be worthy.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Yeah, a worthy drummer for in insane.
- 19:51Speaker 2: So yeah, there was no decision to be made. That
- 19:53Speaker 2: was only a goal to accomplish.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Do you remember the point where you actually sat back
- 19:58Speaker 1: and you went think, I've got this. I reckon, I reckon,
- 20:02Speaker 1: I can do it.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I do, I do. I started crying. Yeah, man,
- 20:09Speaker 3: it was.
- 20:11Speaker 2: The whole thing was such a journey, you know, it
- 20:14Speaker 2: was at the first few weeks because this was a process. Yeah,
- 20:19Speaker 2: so when I got the first contact from.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Fred, I had a few weeks not to be.
- 20:26Speaker 2: The perfect drama for insanem but to show that I
- 20:29Speaker 2: could okay.
- 20:30Speaker 3: So this was the first thing that Fred asked me.
- 20:32Speaker 2: So those first few weeks it was a nightmare, just
- 20:36Speaker 2: you know, absolute stress. Like as I said before, I
- 20:39Speaker 2: put the bar very high for myself, either you can
- 20:42Speaker 2: do this or you quit.
- 20:44Speaker 3: So all the.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Pressure of all the work I've done in my life
- 20:47Speaker 2: came down to this one moment and this one thing.
- 20:52Speaker 3: So yeah, the pressure was very high and.
- 20:57Speaker 2: So and I didn't get a final yes from from
- 20:59Speaker 2: Fred until we played together, which was about six months after.
- 21:03Speaker 2: So this was six months of extreme anxiety and emotions. Yeah,
- 21:07Speaker 2: of okay, but can we do this? Can I do that?
- 21:09Speaker 3: And then again within three four months in I.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Was just hitting the rubber pads, looking at a white
- 21:16Speaker 2: wall for hours and hours on end to see if
- 21:18Speaker 2: I could blast. And you know, for the first part.
- 21:25Speaker 2: The jolly factor was a huge motivating factor, of course,
- 21:29Speaker 2: but as the time came closer that I was going
- 21:32Speaker 2: to jam with Fred, then that became the crippling factor
- 21:36Speaker 2: as well. But as I said before, Fred told me
- 21:40Speaker 2: just don't worry about that, focused on the music and
- 21:43Speaker 2: uh and yeah. So when when Fred when we when
- 21:47Speaker 2: I played with Fred and he, you know, we went
- 21:51Speaker 2: to a cafe and he said, all right, man, welcome
- 21:56Speaker 2: to insanem And I think I've reacted badly that time
- 22:00Speaker 2: because I couldn't believe it. So I was just like, Okay,
- 22:03Speaker 2: cool man, cool, that was it. But when I got home,
- 22:07Speaker 2: I just started crying.
- 22:09Speaker 3: I couldn't believe it was everything I went through my life.
- 22:14Speaker 2: My life has been a lot of ups and downs,
- 22:16Speaker 2: just like everyone's, I guess. But when I was twenty
- 22:19Speaker 2: twenty three years old, I decided I was going to
- 22:21Speaker 2: do this live music thing, and there was no plan
- 22:24Speaker 2: B and it was always about drumming. And when Fred
- 22:28Speaker 2: said that, I think I just remember a lot of
- 22:32Speaker 2: the good and a lot of the bad that I
- 22:34Speaker 2: went through to get to that point, and I just
- 22:36Speaker 2: couldn't believe that I was hearing, yeah, that I was
- 22:40Speaker 2: going to play with Fred, because I've worked with Fred
- 22:44Speaker 2: for him a long time in Dragon Force as well,
- 22:47Speaker 2: and we always got on really well musically as specially
- 22:51Speaker 2: as friends, but even musically it's like everyone else like
- 22:53Speaker 2: power metal. Fred and I were into all sorts of
- 22:57Speaker 2: metal and those all sorts of music. We both love
- 22:59Speaker 2: Michael Jackson, so we had a lot a lot in
- 23:01Speaker 2: common musically, and there was something I always wanted was
- 23:05Speaker 2: to play with Fred, or more so, to be good
- 23:10Speaker 2: enough to play with Fred, because he is a perfect musician.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Whatever is wrong, it's you, it's not him, you know.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And I love that. I love being you know, we're
- 23:20Speaker 3: playing with someone who's like, I.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Know, he's right, it's I fucked up, okay, And I
- 23:24Speaker 2: love that it makes you want to be better. Yeah,
- 23:28Speaker 2: we don't play to a metronome. Fred is the metronome.
- 23:30Speaker 2: So you know what I'm saying, he's right hand. I'm
- 23:33Speaker 2: just playing attention to it. I was like, Okay, I'll
- 23:36Speaker 2: follow this guy, and I'm sure everything is good, you
- 23:38Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. So yeah, and then and then yeah,
- 23:43Speaker 2: when that confirmation happened, it was it was just incredible.
- 23:48Speaker 3: I got home. I started crying. It was a couple
- 23:50Speaker 3: of days of absorbing it.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Oh my god, this is actually happening, you know so,
- 23:55Speaker 2: But again, more than anything that, it was about.
- 23:58Speaker 3: The honor and the priven.
- 24:02Speaker 2: To be the one who gets to carry a part
- 24:05Speaker 2: of Joey's legacy. You know, I can't think of anything
- 24:09Speaker 2: else the bigger or better than this, you know, A
- 24:14Speaker 2: huge deal.
- 24:15Speaker 1: In Devastation was a tribute to Joey obviously, but it
- 24:18Speaker 1: was also to Frederick's father. So what sort of feedback
- 24:21Speaker 1: of the album got from friends, family and fans.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Well, yeah, of course this is essentially Fred's band, and
- 24:32Speaker 2: he's the songwriter, and of course he put all these emotions,
- 24:36Speaker 2: of all these things he went through into the songwriting
- 24:41Speaker 2: of the album. But in terms of feedback, honestly, I expected,
- 24:47Speaker 2: I didn't expect what ended up happening. All the feedback
- 24:52Speaker 2: has been so positive. I have not seen anything negative anywhere,
- 24:58Speaker 2: and in twenty twenty five miracle because you know, because
- 25:02Speaker 2: the Internet just loves having their opinions, and a lot
- 25:05Speaker 2: of the times they're not positive.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Not that it matters so much, but it was. It was.
- 25:10Speaker 2: It was incredible to see how positive the feedback was
- 25:14Speaker 2: around all of it. You know, like, yeah, again, I
- 25:18Speaker 2: didn't see anyone. Yeah, everything was great. I don't know
- 25:23Speaker 2: what to say. The feedback has really been incredible for us.
- 25:26Speaker 2: And well, we've got some major festivals coming up next year.
- 25:31Speaker 2: There were the Healthfest, grasp Pop and a few more.
- 25:34Speaker 2: And we can't wait to bring to bring Sin Sanem
- 25:37Speaker 2: to the bigger crowds, you know, because the band deserves that.
- 25:40Speaker 2: The songs are amazing, the band is amazing. We're we
- 25:43Speaker 2: are We're a proper family there.
- 25:45Speaker 3: It's it's it's great. It's a privilege to be a
- 25:48Speaker 3: part of it.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Awesome. Right, we'll finish up with this one. I like,
- 25:52Speaker 1: you knew Joey personally and professionally, So what would you
- 25:55Speaker 1: consider to be the legacy that he would have wanted
- 25:57Speaker 1: to leave?
- 26:00Speaker 2: Okay, he always said that this is a band, this
- 26:07Speaker 2: is not a side project. He always made a point
- 26:10Speaker 2: of saying that many many times during the tour, and I,
- 26:16Speaker 2: you know, I don't know how to say this, but
- 26:19Speaker 2: I know he would have wanted us to carry on.
- 26:22Speaker 3: And I think he would have.
- 26:25Speaker 2: I think he would have been happy with it, with
- 26:28Speaker 2: me taking taking on the show. I don't know who
- 26:31Speaker 2: am I to say? But from what I got to
- 26:34Speaker 2: know from him and what I saw, I think he
- 26:37Speaker 2: would have been happy with what we're doing now, and
- 26:40Speaker 2: it's for him, So yeah, it's no one is trying
- 26:44Speaker 2: to You cannot be better than the best, you know.
- 26:47Speaker 2: All we're trying to do is respectfully carry on with
- 26:51Speaker 2: his legacy, and in my case, I'm just trying to
- 26:53Speaker 2: not fuck it up.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Bro, I think you're doing better than that might. From
- 26:56Speaker 1: what I've got, you're doing a great job. Thanks again,
- 27:00Speaker 1: like some of this couldn't have been easy, your answers
- 27:02Speaker 1: were on us, just straight from the heart, so we
- 27:04Speaker 1: appreciate that. In devastation is out now since Sam is going,
- 27:08Speaker 1: they are still paying tribute to the honor and the
- 27:10Speaker 1: legacy of the great Joey Jorderson. But from what I hear,
- 27:13Speaker 1: you doing a great job to Andre, So keep it up, brother,
