- 0:00Interesting conversation I just had and I want to share you
- 0:03share with you all the context of that conversation.
- 0:08I share with someone that aligning employees career goals
- 0:11with strategic goals of an organization helps in a lot of
- 0:15different ways. And a lot of people don't really
- 0:16understand some of the nuance and different ways that that
- 0:21making sure career mapping is a focus.
- 0:23So I'll I'll just give you a few aligning.
- 0:30Career mapping contextual deep dives to understanding the
- 0:35personal interest and perspectives of your employees
- 0:38can separate you from the market as pertains to your product
- 0:42line, your service line, your offerings, your branding, your
- 0:47marketing, your organizational image.
- 0:49We see a lot of this within here's a here's the best example
- 0:55for those that know me I'm a jewelry guy.
- 0:57I'm a street wear guy. And and and a little bit on the
- 1:01way that I dress and the way that I am personally, but more
- 1:03or less I'm just, I'm very fascinated by how those types of
- 1:08brands can cultivate and create community and how they can make
- 1:12really strategic bundles and partnerships and how they can
- 1:16just they just seem like really fun brands to work for and work
- 1:19at, right. And just like cool things
- 1:22happening there, right. And a perfect example of this is
- 1:27if you look at the people. Right The the capabilities, the
- 1:31personalities, the behaviors, the aligning someone's personal
- 1:39context to the strategy of the business to the strategy of the
- 1:42career mapping goals. You can see how all of those
- 1:46look at and feel at a Under Armour or a Reebok as an
- 1:51example. Those organizations seem like
- 1:54they have a core identity of how they want to build out the
- 1:57business model, what services and products they want to put
- 1:59out. And it seems like to me they
- 2:01don't have their ears to the ground connected to the career
- 2:05mapping initiatives that are connected to the company being a
- 2:09little bit more innovative. It just doesn't seem like they
- 2:12have that because I'm quite sure if they were to be a little bit
- 2:14more thoughtful and they're recruiting the curb mapping, how
- 2:17they're putting teams together and actually listen to those
- 2:19team members, I'm quite sure Under Armour.
- 2:23Would look different, would feel different, would have a bit more
- 2:25market share, right? That's just my opinion on that
- 2:27right now. If you look at what's happening
- 2:30with Puma, if you're if you look at what's been happening with
- 2:35Nike and what if, and if you look at what's been happening
- 2:38with Adidas as of late, those organizations have energy, have
- 2:43swag, have charisma, have creativity, have innovation,
- 2:47Have they, they push the boundaries in the limits
- 2:50consistently. Why is that?
- 2:53How is that? Well, it's because they have a
- 2:55career mapping plan where they give everyone ample opportunity,
- 3:01right? They really bring the most
- 3:03creative, the the most the hustlers of the company.
- 3:06They really find ways to really lather them up and and put them
- 3:10on a track to make a real big impact in some of the product
- 3:14that comes out, some of the marketing that comes out, some
- 3:16of the strategic partnership decisions.
- 3:19They they listen to just the the energy of the of the company and
- 3:22they put them in the best positions to win and to and to
- 3:25show that creativity. I think creativity and
- 3:28innovation is one of the factors and things that that many
- 3:35organizations realize they could have a lot more of if they were
- 3:38to just lean into their employees.
- 3:41And so I think. You know, organizations
- 3:43aligning, focusing on career goals, career mapping can really
- 3:47help them separate themselves in the market again with the
- 3:51product line, with the service line, with their offerings and I
- 3:54think what you see with Under Armour, Reebok and then what you
- 3:58see with what you see with Nike and Puma, those are two drastic
- 4:06companies that have had two drastic.
- 4:09Trajectories and they've had radically different decades.
- 4:14You know, there, there, there, there are 20 there.
- 4:17What's that 2013 to 2023 have been drastically different.
- 4:22And I and I think there's a lot of reasons why I connected to
- 4:25that. Another reason I think is
- 4:29something that a lot of people don't think about.
- 4:32They can retain the most creative, the most innovative
- 4:35and the most risktaking employees.
- 4:38Having a realistic career mapping plan that bakes in,
- 4:42genuinely putting that creative out-of-the-box, risk taking
- 4:48employee in the position to say hey, this is where I want to go,
- 4:52this is what I want to do here. What is the learning and
- 4:55development map? What is the relationship map?
- 4:58What is the skill set, map and journey look like for me to get
- 5:01there, having that for everyone, even those that are a little bit
- 5:04more outside the box in my opinion, their key employees and
- 5:08having that in place, you allow you're you're able to retain
- 5:10those key workers. I think you're able to keep
- 5:14younger workers as well. Like what people don't
- 5:17understand and I'm seeing this a lot right now with with my
- 5:20wife's sister who's a bit younger.
- 5:24What you're seeing right now is. Younger employees like to be
- 5:29younger. Human beings, period, like to be
- 5:33directed more than they're willing to admit.
- 5:35They like structure more than more than they're willing to
- 5:37admit. They like nudges more than they
- 5:42are willing to admit. And having a career mapping plan
- 5:46and place for those younger workers will actually allow you
- 5:49to retain some of those younger workers.
- 5:51As long as you're listening to them and making it creative and
- 5:53fun and innovative and all the things we've already talked
- 5:56about. And then I think the last thing
- 6:00is there will be a decrease in turnover after an economic turn
- 6:06downturn, which we're going through right now, right?
- 6:10And so I think consistently and still first and foremost, we
- 6:16already know my opinions on how so many companies could stop.
- 6:20The laying off because I'll make this clear.
- 6:23America's never officially announced we were in a
- 6:25recession. And if they have I must have
- 6:27been under a rock. But I don't think it's been an
- 6:29official CNN. Big bold red letters.
- 6:33Everyone stopped where they're doing.
- 6:34I don't think that's happened yet and I think it's because
- 6:38America got really bloated and fat and and I think America was
- 6:43really just loving the financial state.
- 6:48And I think the companies that are in America got bloated and I
- 6:52think they made poor decisions. And I think companies are just
- 6:58super heavy with, with employees that are just not cutting it.
- 7:01And cutting it doesn't mean they're not hitting their
- 7:04numbers. Cutting, it doesn't mean they're
- 7:05not getting things done efficiently.
- 7:09You know, no cutting, you know, because they're that's super
- 7:11contextual. Cutting, it means there's a lot
- 7:13of people that are just no longer motivated, engaged and
- 7:16aligned with the organization, whether that's tactically,
- 7:20whether that's values wise, whether that's whatever that is,
- 7:22right. And so I think companies that
- 7:27still focus on career mapping hopefully have not laid off a
- 7:31lot of people. They will have a decrease in
- 7:33turnover once this is done because what's going to happen,
- 7:36no one wants to talk about this, but what's going to happen is
- 7:39when this. Economic or you know, economic
- 7:42downturn is complete and companies have cash again and
- 7:47companies are aggressively recruiting again, which is
- 7:49already starting to happen. You're going to see people that
- 7:52are not happy at companies, people that did not get the
- 7:56opportunity to have crew mapping infrastructure.
- 8:01They're going to leave those companies that they were at and
- 8:04go to the companies that are now popping up because they're
- 8:06cooler, they're more productive, They have those crew mapping
- 8:08plans. And frankly, they just can't.
- 8:12They don't have to be safe anymore because there's
- 8:14abundance of opportunity out there.
- 8:16And that's what a lot of organizations are not thinking
- 8:19about and we have to think about it.
- 8:22So invest in tools like almost invest in tools like top
- 8:27employers, invest in tools like diversity, Invest in tools like
- 8:31invest in. Invest in anything, frankly,
- 8:34that will allow you to focus on careers.
- 8:37We'll focus on your people. We'll put employees first.
- 8:40I promise you. I promise you, that investment
- 8:43will pay off 18 to 24 months down the road.
- 8:47I guarantee it. As always, just a few thoughts,
- 8:52just a few perspectives. We'll talk to you.
