- 1:37Speaker 2: knocked me down a flight of stas an honest woman
- 1:39Speaker 2: was strangled by a green silk sash, and a simpering
- 1:42Speaker 2: dandy was shot at bit all because of a run
- 1:44Speaker 2: of the mail Act six five hundred miles away. It
- 1:47Speaker 2: happened like this.

- 2:41Speaker 2: here you are, thank you, Hang out of my way,
- 2:45Speaker 2: They take it easy.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Drive away from here.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Wait a minute, Wait a minute. What is it got
- 2:48Speaker 2: to help me? On? Being followed in just a minute,
- 2:50Speaker 2: says that light screen driveway.
- 2:51Speaker 6: You hurried?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Please, okay, okay. Here was streamlined, close cropped hair, the
- 2:59Speaker 2: color of a smoky sun and set the low heeled slippers,
- 3:01Speaker 2: brocaded and brogs, and in between address that conformed us
- 3:04Speaker 2: close and smooth as lacquer on a Chinese vase. I
- 3:08Speaker 2: made four turns and four blocks and pulled into the
- 3:10Speaker 2: curb and stop. You stabbed to look at me with
- 3:12Speaker 2: a pair of shop jade green eyes that said life
- 3:14Speaker 2: had always been nothing but a calculated risk. And she
- 3:17Speaker 2: stepped out of the car and smiled.
- 3:19Speaker 5: You were a big hell brother.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Thanks good bar, and not just like that, baby, Come here.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I don't like being left out on a limb.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Now.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Look, you did me a favor, okay, but we drop
- 3:28Speaker 5: it right here. It's trouble. You wouldn't like it.
- 3:30Speaker 2: On the contrary, it's business like keeping my own nose clean.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I'm a private detective, but I didn't issue any invitation
- 3:36Speaker 2: for you to jump into.
- 3:36Speaker 6: My car a private detective.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, who's chasing your baby? The law? You can tell
- 3:41Speaker 2: me out here on the straighter inside over a drink.
- 3:43Speaker 5: I'll take the drink. I need it. Maybe I need
- 3:46Speaker 5: you too. This might be a break. I'm missus Terry
- 3:49Speaker 5: Lebar and.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You're mallow Philip Marlow. Who you're running from? Missus Lebarn?
- 3:55Speaker 5: A woman in slack. I don't know who she is
- 3:57Speaker 5: and why she's following me, but every time I look back,
- 3:59Speaker 5: she's there. The second day, both yeah.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Sure, say look, why haven't you talked it over with
- 4:08Speaker 2: your local policeman.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Are you working for me, private detective? That all depends,
- 4:12Speaker 5: all right, I'm a merchant Chinese silks, not a little
- 4:15Speaker 5: shop for six percent profit, but wholesale quit with cash
- 4:18Speaker 5: forty percent?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Uh huh, so what's the point?
- 4:21Speaker 5: No police? All it takes is a rumor of police,
- 4:23Speaker 5: and I'll have doors closed on me from Seattle to Mexico.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Good evening.
- 4:27Speaker 6: May I get you something?
- 4:28Speaker 5: I'm Martini?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Please play you too, winn Yes, right away. This gets
- 4:31Speaker 2: us back to the woman in slacks.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Huh yeah, here mallow, fifty and fifty one hundred dollars.
- 4:38Speaker 5: I want you to locate that woman, find out who
- 4:40Speaker 5: she is and why she's after me?
- 4:42Speaker 2: Will you not without a few more effects, for instance,
- 4:45Speaker 2: because she had some connection with your business?
- 4:47Speaker 5: No, I have two men working with me, A strong
- 4:50Speaker 5: one named Harlan Casey, who sees that my cash gets
- 4:52Speaker 5: safely to where it's going, and a smart one named
- 4:55Speaker 5: Joe Temple, who knows what to buy with it. She
- 4:57Speaker 5: doesn't belong to either of them.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Are you sure positive?
- 5:00Speaker 5: Casey hates all women, even me, I think, And Joe Temple, well,
- 5:07Speaker 5: Joe's a wonderful guy, you hint like a woman falling
- 5:10Speaker 5: in love with a fellow named Joe Temple.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Can't they talk about it further?
- 5:13Speaker 5: Why Temple and Katy have been in San Francisco all
- 5:16Speaker 5: week on a deal?
- 5:18Speaker 2: A big deal.
- 5:18Speaker 5: It'll make or break. It's every set I have is
- 5:21Speaker 5: tied up in it.
- 5:22Speaker 2: What about you and Joe Temple?
- 5:24Speaker 5: Yeah, well, perhaps this will explain. I planned to go
- 5:28Speaker 5: away this weekend, but I changed my mind because I
- 5:30Speaker 5: didn't want to missus letters. I know it sounds funny,
- 5:34Speaker 5: but it's true.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Those must be some letters.
- 5:36Speaker 5: They are like the one I got this morning. It's
- 5:39Speaker 5: half business, all right, complete account of how hard he
- 5:42Speaker 5: and Casey worked for me yesterday in San Francisco. But
- 5:46Speaker 5: the rest of it is to me personally.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I don't want to sound old fashioned missus Lebarb.
- 5:50Speaker 6: But what about my husband?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:52Speaker 5: Yeah, that was a mistake. I couldn't live with one thing.
- 5:55Speaker 5: I can't Stan Marlow was being lied to. It leaves
- 5:57Speaker 5: me vindictive. I'm suing for divorce right now. Vince lebar
- 6:02Speaker 5: is a human elite, just cold and spineless and parasitic
- 6:05Speaker 5: is the real thing.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Okay, but why would your hitting your husband put a
- 6:08Speaker 2: woman in slice on your trail. I don't know, all right, Terry,
- 6:11Speaker 2: I'll worry about that too. Any idea where I can start?
- 6:14Speaker 5: Just one? I pulled a switch on her yesterday model
- 6:17Speaker 5: for about an hour. I traveled to the corner of
- 6:19Speaker 5: Wilshire and Losienagether and lost her in traffic. There are
- 6:22Speaker 5: several dancing schools around there. Is that worth anything?
- 6:25Speaker 2: Maybe? What kind of car was she driving?
- 6:28Speaker 5: We were both walking. She's tall and brunette, and I've
- 6:31Speaker 5: seen todes with nicer eyes.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Can't guarantee anything.
- 6:34Speaker 5: I'll keep my fingers crossed. Marlow here take the hundred
- 6:39Speaker 5: do which you can report to me at my place.
- 6:40Speaker 6: Two or four Beechwood Circle.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Okay, pardon, share your drinks? Oh thanks here, Thank you, sir,
- 6:47Speaker 2: to your success private dependent, see your health silk merchant
- 6:51Speaker 2: drink cording. Slugging it down was no way to treat
- 7:01Speaker 2: a good dry martini, but I figured it was time.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I was on my way. I drove out the Wheelshare
- 7:07Speaker 2: in Losienegas and slowed down enough to look at all
- 7:09Speaker 2: four corners. It was a drug store with a specialized
- 7:12Speaker 2: garbage cans to drive in called Scutties. A branch to
- 7:14Speaker 2: the Bank of Los Angeles and the flying red Horse
- 7:17Speaker 2: over a mobile gas station. I drove on again. When
- 7:20Speaker 2: I spotted a pair of black slacks going into a
- 7:22Speaker 2: dancing studio, I half blocked down. It looked like a lead.
- 7:27Speaker 2: But after two hours of staring at knobby knees and
- 7:29Speaker 2: shorts and bulging hips and bloomers, all knocking themselves out
- 7:32Speaker 2: for a mythical cleek lighted future, I was finally convinced
- 7:36Speaker 2: that it was a dead end. Now. I got back
- 7:38Speaker 2: into my car and headed up into the hills for
- 7:40Speaker 2: Beechwood Circle in the slim hope that Terry could give
- 7:43Speaker 2: me something more to go on. Her house at two
- 7:46Speaker 2: o four was low and dainty and half hidden behind
- 7:48Speaker 2: the tough, slender grace of a bamboo grove. The walk
- 7:52Speaker 2: was guarded by a white marble Lion of Korea in
- 7:54Speaker 2: the front door. When I finally found it turned out
- 7:57Speaker 2: to be a sliding panel in a wall of oriental
- 7:59Speaker 2: lettice work. As the door slid open, I was looking
- 8:02Speaker 2: down the barrel of a snub nosed pistol felt very
- 8:05Speaker 2: steady in the hands of a heart eyed brunette in
- 8:08Speaker 2: a pair of black slacks.
- 8:10Speaker 7: You've been looking high and low for me. Haven't your
- 8:12Speaker 7: peeper ever since you left that day? I might have been,
- 8:15Speaker 7: You're not the brightest.
- 8:16Speaker 6: Character in the world.
- 8:17Speaker 7: In spite of what you and your friends think.
- 8:19Speaker 6: I spotted your car when she got in.
- 8:22Speaker 7: It wasn't too tough to tag, where's Terry sleeping off
- 8:25Speaker 7: a hangover from better day?
- 8:26Speaker 2: To get the chatter? Where is she?
- 8:27Speaker 7: Come on in and look? And that's no suggestion, sailor
- 8:30Speaker 7: as an order. Move over there to the top.
- 8:33Speaker 6: Of the stage.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Sure, that's a good snot.
- 8:37Speaker 6: Boy, you're late.
- 8:38Speaker 5: You know I got what I came for, and now
- 8:40Speaker 5: I'm in a hurry.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Turn around looks oh oh? There were ten stairs down
- 8:53Speaker 2: to the basement, and with a chivalry and forced by
- 8:56Speaker 2: the forty five, I hit all with the first three.
- 9:00Speaker 2: By the time I worked all the kingshout and was
- 9:01Speaker 2: back upstairs again, she was gone. I started through the house,
- 9:05Speaker 2: then slowly from one room to another, turning on lights
- 9:07Speaker 2: as I went looking for I knew it was going
- 9:09Speaker 2: to be a very sick plant. Well. I got as
- 9:12Speaker 2: far as the study, where somebody had gone through the
- 9:14Speaker 2: desk draws with what must have been a snowplow, and
- 9:17Speaker 2: I still hadn't found Terry. I got that number feeling
- 9:20Speaker 2: in my stomach. I started out a side door that
- 9:23Speaker 2: opened into the patio, but then I heard a whistle
- 9:26Speaker 2: from the front walk. I cut back through the house
- 9:29Speaker 2: instead and waited near the door. Erry, Hey, Derry, can
- 9:34Speaker 2: I come in this little Joe the Fresco kid? What
- 9:38Speaker 2: happened your weekend trip? Honeia? Who are you? What do
- 9:43Speaker 2: you want? Hi? Temple? How do you know me? Missus
- 9:47Speaker 2: Lebbar hired me today just after she canceled the weekend.
- 9:49Speaker 2: She gave me a rundown. You hired you? What do
- 9:51Speaker 2: you mean? I'm a private detective named Mallow. Why would
- 9:54Speaker 2: she hire you? Because she was being followed by a
- 9:57Speaker 2: brunette and slack. She didn't like it. And that's all
- 9:58Speaker 2: the information you're going to get. Relax, you say, Terry,
- 10:02Speaker 2: isn't here, isn't home? Not so far? No man? Back
- 10:06Speaker 2: here to the study, Temple. I want you to look
- 10:08Speaker 2: at Temple. Somebody's gone through the desk in an awful hurry. Yeah, yeah,
- 10:13Speaker 2: I see what you mean. Maybe you know something about
- 10:15Speaker 2: what's missing. Huh. You and missus Leabar were fairly close
- 10:18Speaker 2: when I'm told the letters. The letters are gone. Terry
- 10:21Speaker 2: kept my letters in this bottom drawer. By the way, Temple,
- 10:25Speaker 2: where's your sidekick Colin Casey?
- 10:27Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 10:27Speaker 9: We both left San Francisco yesterday. He hates to fly,
- 10:31Speaker 9: so I assume he took a train. He ought to
- 10:34Speaker 9: be here in La Now. Well, you don't think Casey's
- 10:37Speaker 9: mixed up in.
- 10:37Speaker 2: This, do you. I don't know.
- 10:39Speaker 10: It could be Vince Lebar. That's who it was that
- 10:42Speaker 10: got those letters. It was Vince Lebar. They were really
- 10:45Speaker 10: love letters. The business part was nothing. And Lebar is
- 10:48Speaker 10: the dog in the manger kind of guy who wants
- 10:50Speaker 10: everyone to be unhappy. If he had it's that fits Temple.
- 10:53Speaker 2: With a smart lawyer, your letters to Terry becomes great
- 10:55Speaker 2: a material for a counter suit for divorce. Sure he
- 10:59Speaker 2: could make it stick and to get a fat settlement
- 11:00Speaker 2: at a community property laws. And listen, here's what you doll.
- 11:04Speaker 2: It's it's Terry, Terry temper wait Terry. Look at her, Marlow,
- 11:13Speaker 2: look at her.
- 11:16Speaker 6: She's dead.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Matthews, hamside Mallow. Matthews is a dead one out here.
- 11:35Speaker 2: A woman and got a pencil.
- 11:36Speaker 11: Always go ahead.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I'm at two old four Beechwood Circle. Woman was a
- 11:41Speaker 2: client he was traangled with a green silk sash my
- 11:44Speaker 2: laundry pajamas, Matthews. Sometime within the last I'd say hour.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Her name was Terry Lebar and Ry Lebar.
- 11:50Speaker 11: Wait a minute, month to listen. We gotta tell a
- 11:52Speaker 11: type from a sheriff and empire are a gun come
- 11:54Speaker 11: in five minutes ago?
- 11:55Speaker 2: So wait a minute, Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 11: Says some guy named Jess Freeman form La was killed
- 12:00Speaker 11: there this morning in a traffic accident. Was loaded with
- 12:03Speaker 11: big dough, but doesn't look the type. The only other
- 12:06Speaker 11: identification on him was a business card from one Terry Lebar. Yeah,
- 12:09Speaker 11: you gotta help polanswer for that.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Uh Temple, do you know anything about a man named
- 12:14Speaker 2: Jess Freeman? He was killed in Ourgan today in a
- 12:16Speaker 2: traffic accident. Had one of Terry's cards? Huh Freeman? Yeah, no, no,
- 12:20Speaker 2: I don't remember how dice Matthew, what are you talking
- 12:22Speaker 2: to him? Joe Temple, one of Terry Levar's associates here,
- 12:26Speaker 2: haven't heard of Jess Freeman, said.
- 12:29Speaker 11: Prince to Washington. The tattoo says he was in the
- 12:32Speaker 11: Navy once still open him down now about out there?
- 12:35Speaker 11: Any idea will killed him?
- 12:36Speaker 2: Yeah? Maybe a brunette and slacks. I think got no
- 12:39Speaker 2: where to find it.
- 12:40Speaker 11: Well, it's dandy. Sit until we get them. I'll be
- 12:43Speaker 11: right out there.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Wait a minute, lieutenant, But look right now, it's only
- 12:45Speaker 2: a hunch. But if I move fast and quiet, I
- 12:47Speaker 2: might be able to develop it into something worthwhile. Okay, okay,
- 12:51Speaker 2: but keep.
- 12:51Speaker 11: In touch Field.
- 12:52Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, I still can't believe it about Terry Marlowe.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Now look, look, why don't you just go home and
- 12:57Speaker 2: take it easy. I'll tell Lieutenant Matthews where you can
- 12:59Speaker 2: find your.
- 13:00Speaker 9: Thanks thirteen ten Marlboro Drawing right now.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Tell me you know where Vince Leabar lives.
- 13:05Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, the Laverne apartments on Rossmore. He's got a
- 13:08Speaker 9: suite on the top floor seven eight seven A. And
- 13:10Speaker 9: if it's any help, he drives a new Green Nash Sedan.
- 13:14Speaker 9: But I thought you said that it was that brunette.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I did. I did, And if Vince Leabar can't lead
- 13:19Speaker 2: me to the lady in long pants, I'll leave my shirt.
- 13:21Speaker 2: What's more, Matthews, we'll see to it personally. Yes, what
- 13:35Speaker 2: do you want? I'm quiet conversation with Vince Leabar. I'm
- 13:38Speaker 2: Philip marlow private detect. How exciting had I known you
- 13:41Speaker 2: were coming out of bake the cake? Oh you're breaking
- 13:43Speaker 2: me out. I was hired by your wife. Today your
- 13:46Speaker 2: wife is dead, Labar. She was murdered, kerry murdered. Yeah, no,
- 13:52Speaker 2: I you don't mind, I'll come in. Huh she was
- 13:55Speaker 2: killed because of a packet of letters Labar. Oh, no
- 13:58Speaker 2: kind of or a cinched to cause a big stir
- 14:00Speaker 2: anybody's divorce cord started biking up to swing a countersuit.
- 14:04Speaker 8: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Let us let us Joe Temple's let us to terry
- 14:07Speaker 2: the ones you arranged to have stolen tonight. Oh you
- 14:09Speaker 2: must be crazy. That wasn't part of the plan, Labla.
- 14:12Speaker 2: That was one of those bum deals, A robbery that
- 14:14Speaker 2: got out of hand, wind up as a murder. Where
- 14:17Speaker 2: is she? Lablah? Who's the brunett and slacks? And where
- 14:18Speaker 2: do I find her? You get out of here. I'll
- 14:20Speaker 2: have the police shut out not only steel letters but
- 14:24Speaker 2: as trays too. Huh. Like it's coy little number here
- 14:27Speaker 2: at dog house. He's gott he's driving will shin Lessiga. Okay,
- 14:33Speaker 2: that's all. Oh, now a gone man. They say you're
- 14:39Speaker 2: yellow la blah. But you're not. You're just stupid.
- 14:41Speaker 8: The terrace outside those doors, Mallow, those with the iron grill,
- 14:46Speaker 8: going out there, go on. I don't think Terry's dead,
- 14:52Speaker 8: and I don't think she hired you. I think you're
- 14:54Speaker 8: working for that lousy louse Joe Temple, and if so,
- 14:57Speaker 8: he'll need a battalion of private detectives before I'm thrue.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Through right now, Laby, you're too dumb to see it.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Go on clear over the.
- 15:04Speaker 8: Rail, your back to me, seven floors down, marlow to
- 15:09Speaker 8: a concrete driveway, just in case you get jumpy.
- 15:26Speaker 3: In just a moment, the second act of Philip marlow
- 15:28Speaker 3: But first, most people like to know what to expect.
- 15:31Speaker 3: But on at least one CBS show, a great part
- 15:34Speaker 3: of the fun is in what turns up on the
- 15:35Speaker 3: spur of the moment. That show is Groucho Marks Great
- 15:39Speaker 3: Quiz You Bet Your Life, heard every Wednesday Night on
- 15:42Speaker 3: most of the same CBS stations. Now with our star
- 15:46Speaker 3: Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act of Philip
- 15:49Speaker 3: Marlowe and tonight's story The Vital Statistic, the.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Moment Vince Lebar and the courage Caliber thirty two we
- 16:04Speaker 2: held in his right hand made it out of the apopment.
- 16:06Speaker 2: On the run for the elevator. I kicked through the
- 16:08Speaker 2: plate glass door, and I spent the next two minutes
- 16:11Speaker 2: ultimately swearing, straining, and nicking myself while I played contortionist
- 16:15Speaker 2: in and out of the fancy snake grill work in
- 16:17Speaker 2: my wrought iron cage, until finally I reached the inside hand.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I was free out and over to the telephone in
- 16:24Speaker 2: a big hurry, because for my money, the icing on
- 16:26Speaker 2: Labar's voice left Joe Temple someplace on the short side.
- 16:30Speaker 2: What the life insurance people call good risk? Hello, Marlow
- 16:35Speaker 2: Temple listened hard. Your life's in danger? What Leabar? You
- 16:38Speaker 2: had him tagged from the first after those letters? All right?
- 16:41Speaker 2: But what about the girl in swat Well? I think
- 16:43Speaker 2: she might have a connection with a drive in on
- 16:44Speaker 2: Wilshore and Losienego, a place called Scotty's In. I'm gonna
- 16:47Speaker 2: check it now. Tell me any word from Terry's muscle
- 16:49Speaker 2: man yet? Yeah, oh nothing, Marlow?
- 16:52Speaker 11: But look, can I meet you and talking?
- 16:53Speaker 2: No? No, Vince Lebar had a gun and a short
- 16:55Speaker 2: tempa when he left here. I think it's working easier.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Just hey, waye from open windows temple. I'll caught you.
- 17:05Speaker 2: He's got his inn. Was eating on the run in
- 17:07Speaker 2: the finest California tradition. A mammoth circle of steel and
- 17:10Speaker 2: the glass painted a dazzling yellow and blue, surrounded by
- 17:14Speaker 2: a half a dozen cars containing teenaged couples with smudged
- 17:18Speaker 2: lipstack and the giggles. The second after I pulled in
- 17:21Speaker 2: and parked something in slacks with false eyelashes, a waist
- 17:24Speaker 2: you could span with a handcuff, and a fixed front
- 17:26Speaker 2: line chorus girls smiled with the cord mark ginger against
- 17:30Speaker 2: my wind shoe, handed me a menu that still had
- 17:32Speaker 2: the froth from an earlier customer's milkshake in one corner.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Well famous dress coffee, ginger, clean information.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Oh with you again?
- 17:41Speaker 12: Look, baby, what I told you on the phone ten
- 17:42Speaker 12: minutes ago?
- 17:43Speaker 2: Still go huh about? What about Rose Fassetta?
- 17:46Speaker 12: The girl you described long black hair, are nice shape,
- 17:49Speaker 12: you're infatuated, but you don't have the name an address.
- 17:52Speaker 2: So I was nice.
- 17:53Speaker 12: I gave the name, told you to look the addressed
- 17:54Speaker 12: up in the phone book.
- 17:55Speaker 6: Period.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Don't be so lazy, baby, Wait a minute, Ginger, I
- 17:58Speaker 2: didn't call you before, but a dime cup of coffee.
- 18:01Speaker 2: You'll bring you a ten buck tip if you tell
- 18:02Speaker 2: me who did Hey?
- 18:03Speaker 12: You want the guy who called? I don't know any names,
- 18:05Speaker 12: but you're not him. He didn't talk up like you do.
- 18:08Speaker 2: But what's all?
- 18:09Speaker 12: The first baby roads sat has got a guy she's
- 18:11Speaker 12: spoken for besides the handsome phone.
- 18:14Speaker 2: You, sweetheart, this is business strictly, believe me. What's the address?
- 18:18Speaker 12: Come on twenty four to twenty eight even hers drive
- 18:21Speaker 12: bottom floor.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Thanks, here, here's a ten I promise.
- 18:24Speaker 12: You no, never mind, her name was pretty him, So
- 18:27Speaker 12: why should I judge you besides beside what I like
- 18:31Speaker 12: the way you said, sweetheart, come on back sometime, will you, baby?
- 18:34Speaker 5: When you want more coffee?
- 18:36Speaker 2: Okay, when I want more than coffee and less than murder,
- 18:39Speaker 2: I will stay out of a ginger. It definitely double
- 18:45Speaker 2: talk with the effect was what I wanted. Ginger with
- 18:47Speaker 2: mouth wide open and staring after me like my ears
- 18:49Speaker 2: were on backward. That way, she might be scared out
- 18:52Speaker 2: of making a simple curiosity spike telephone call in the
- 18:55Speaker 2: popular roads for setacase would trumpet my arrab loud, clear
- 18:59Speaker 2: and prematurely. Ten minutes later, I was poked away from
- 19:02Speaker 2: number twenty eight, twenty four, Havenhurst. As I got out
- 19:05Speaker 2: of my car and started to taut the place, I
- 19:08Speaker 2: found Vince Labar's green sedan on the opposite side of
- 19:10Speaker 2: the street and carefully tucked into the shadows of a
- 19:13Speaker 2: pair of long head taper tries. It was a good
- 19:16Speaker 2: time for me to be careful. So when I knocked
- 19:18Speaker 2: on the front door, which showed yellow light at the
- 19:20Speaker 2: threshold and with the starting point for something not too
- 19:23Speaker 2: close to music, I did it with the butt end
- 19:25Speaker 2: of my thirty eighty Yeah is it ziggy front of Ginger's.
- 19:30Speaker 2: She asked me to deliver you a message. Rows, All right,
- 19:34Speaker 2: what's the message? Why you locked? Sunshine? Is no law
- 19:38Speaker 2: against shooting ladies and knocking downstairs. I'll back off. Come on, move,
- 19:42Speaker 2: but not too far the moment. I want you in
- 19:44Speaker 2: between me and Vince lebar Who look, Angel, it's all
- 19:48Speaker 2: real plane. Those suitcases behind you there are packed his
- 19:52Speaker 2: cars outside. He's after the letter said oh no ah, there.
- 19:58Speaker 7: Goes this now bus well paper your openers.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Think get inside fast.
- 20:05Speaker 6: Sure sure he played some particular tailor.
- 20:09Speaker 2: That chair in the desk. Keep your hands in your lap.
- 20:12Speaker 6: Okay, it'll please you.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Miss the detective.
- 20:14Speaker 7: I'll be very glad to after all, you're might guess
- 20:18Speaker 7: and I nice.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Now we talk like a little lady. Harrose Prince Lebo
- 20:24Speaker 2: picked up the letters from you as scheduled, and you're
- 20:26Speaker 2: getting ready to run because you killed Terry and you'd
- 20:28Speaker 2: rather not be around for the question and answer period. Right,
- 20:30Speaker 2: I didn't kill her.
- 20:31Speaker 6: I just knocked it down.
- 20:32Speaker 2: No, you didn't kill it. He just slowed down, a
- 20:37Speaker 2: breathing somewhat with a pajama sash. You're wrong, copper, right,
- 20:41Speaker 2: doesn't that any other way? Go on? Answer it?
- 20:47Speaker 6: Who is it?
- 20:48Speaker 2: Mister Shirley? What's going on then?
- 20:50Speaker 7: Mister Setta, now the jerk who lives in the top
- 20:53Speaker 7: half of this place along with a few thousands, don't
- 20:56Speaker 7: open this door.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I'm going to call the police. I just think we've
- 20:58Speaker 2: heard a noise, did I? Mister Shirley?
- 21:00Speaker 4: Wow, what's going on in here?
- 21:04Speaker 2: Who are you? Never mind that? Now I get on
- 21:05Speaker 2: the phone, call the police. Oh, oh yes, of course, certainly.
- 21:11Speaker 6: Operate, Oh operate it.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I want police her.
- 21:17Speaker 6: Look here, you're a little mixed up about something.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're just a kid who straightened me out.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Just letters, you've got a Terry's place where written by
- 21:24Speaker 2: Joe Temple, was your boyfriend Vince heading for Temple when
- 21:28Speaker 2: he left here?
- 21:28Speaker 6: I can't, I don't right, Maybe you wont now leave
- 21:34Speaker 6: me alone?
- 21:35Speaker 2: Not quite, mister Shirley that desk next year. There's a
- 21:40Speaker 2: gun keep it on at the law right, ladies wanted
- 21:42Speaker 2: for murder? Yes you should? Yeah, then shoot Shirley fast
- 21:47Speaker 2: because if you don't, you kill you tell the cops.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I'll fill in the blank, Slad not wait, Why must Julie?
- 21:52Speaker 2: But it we both watch because a guy named Joe
- 21:54Speaker 2: Temple needs my help a lot more than you do.
- 22:03Speaker 2: The home address Temple had given me turned out to
- 22:05Speaker 2: be lights in a quiet house on a quiet street
- 22:07Speaker 2: named Marlboro. I was there, out of my car and
- 22:09Speaker 2: running for the front door when they came. I chucked
- 22:15Speaker 2: my gun out of the holes that got close into
- 22:16Speaker 2: the building and moved up until I was on the
- 22:18Speaker 2: line with a pair of half open patio doors. And
- 22:21Speaker 2: I saw something I hadn't expected. On the floor that
- 22:23Speaker 2: was littered with the broken lamb, pieces of oas and
- 22:25Speaker 2: overturned furniture was Vince Laba, doubled up dead and standing
- 22:31Speaker 2: over him, his face the color of soft cement of
- 22:33Speaker 2: thirty two dangling and his limp right hand was Joe Temple.
- 22:37Speaker 2: When he saw me, he tried to talk with the
- 22:38Speaker 2: words jammed in his throat. When I stepped into the room,
- 22:41Speaker 2: he began to tremble. Oh, I shot him. I couldn't
- 22:45Speaker 2: help it. He was going to down Temple. Get hold
- 22:47Speaker 2: of yourself. Got any brandy around over on that table
- 22:50Speaker 2: near the phone. Yeah, he was out of his mind,
- 22:53Speaker 2: an absolute mania. He said he was going to kill me.
- 22:55Speaker 2: They lunched for him. There was a fight, and you
- 22:57Speaker 2: came up with a gun. Huh. Started from me again.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I pulled the trigger, and then I did it again
- 23:03Speaker 2: a third time.
- 23:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yeah, think this. He brought the letters back, Marlowe. They're
- 23:10Speaker 2: inside on the floor where he threw them.
- 23:12Speaker 9: He said they didn't mean anything anymore, that he and
- 23:14Speaker 9: that girl in the slacks had taken.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Care of Terry Temples. He seemed to go crazy.
- 23:19Speaker 9: He said I was a wife steamer, the cause of
- 23:21Speaker 9: his trouble, and then I deserved death.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Well that's what I dumped at him. It was terrible,
- 23:26Speaker 2: marlow Yeah. Well, between the two of us, we've just
- 23:30Speaker 2: about got all the answers, which is usually a good
- 23:33Speaker 2: time to call the police. What do you mean just
- 23:35Speaker 2: about got all the answers, Marlow? What else is there?
- 23:39Speaker 2: Jess Freeman, the guy Lieutenant Matthews told us about when
- 23:41Speaker 2: we were over at Terry's place. Remember, Oh, yes, that
- 23:44Speaker 2: traffic crash and Empire oreicon. But why should that figure
- 23:47Speaker 2: in this, Marlow? It shouldn't, but I think it does,
- 23:53Speaker 2: Marlow Matthews. Another dead one on the Terry Lebar case.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Vince Lebara husband. He was shot, Yeah, a guy named
- 24:02Speaker 2: Joe Temple. It was self defense. We're coming in, Matthews.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I'll take that gun. Temple, you get the letters. Let's go,
- 24:18Speaker 2: and we got into my car and started downtown. Temple
- 24:21Speaker 2: was more relaxed, and he talked easily until we passed
- 24:25Speaker 2: Vince Lava's sparkling green sedan parked the block away, once
- 24:30Speaker 2: again close into the shadows and once again empty realm.
- 24:35Speaker 2: The sight of it closed him up tight for the
- 24:37Speaker 2: rest of the trip. When we walked into police headquarters
- 24:41Speaker 2: and through the quarter of a mile of glossy carter
- 24:43Speaker 2: leading to the door mark homicide, he didn't open up
- 24:46Speaker 2: any But it didn't matter really, because it's police rule
- 24:50Speaker 2: never to talk to two men about the same thing
- 24:52Speaker 2: at the same time. I was first. Matthews said hello
- 24:57Speaker 2: without shaking hands, waved me into an uncomfortable seat, and
- 24:59Speaker 2: then with his pipe, well, I brought him up to
- 25:02Speaker 2: date and it was his turn.
- 25:05Speaker 4: The Rose Faceta killed Terry Labar so that she could
- 25:07Speaker 4: get the letters Joe Temple had written. Did this so
- 25:11Speaker 4: that her boyfriend, Vince Labar could raise a lot of
- 25:13Speaker 4: fuss in divorce court with the letters, file a counter suit,
- 25:16Speaker 4: that kind of stuff.
- 25:17Speaker 2: That's the whole deal.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Yeah, with Temple making it a double ahead of by
- 25:19Speaker 4: shooting Vince from Vince came to kill him.
- 25:21Speaker 2: That's it, Matthews. If you believe Temple, huh. And if
- 25:25Speaker 2: Temple hadn't slipped, Now, what are you getting at, Phil?
- 25:29Speaker 2: When I was on the phone with you earlier at night,
- 25:30Speaker 2: you asked me if Temple or I knew anything about it.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Jess Freeman was killed in a traffic accident and Empire, Oregon, right, right,
- 25:36Speaker 2: But you didn't no, no, nor did I mention the
- 25:39Speaker 2: town of Empire. It's a Temple. Get a half hour ago,
- 25:43Speaker 2: just before I called you, Temple came up with that name.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Oh, then Molly, hold my calls, Mooney, Molly, I mean
- 25:51Speaker 4: that Joe Temple killed Terry lebar Rose.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Just knocked her out and got the letters. Temple strangled
- 25:56Speaker 2: while she was still unconscious. But why because a guy
- 25:58Speaker 2: identified as Jess Freeman himself killed in a traffic accident.
- 26:01Speaker 2: So a guy who I think was actually Holland Casey,
- 26:04Speaker 2: Terry's two fisted assistant, together with Joe Temple, was crossing
- 26:07Speaker 2: the boss Lager and that left Temple in a very
- 26:10Speaker 2: hot spot save himself. He had a kill. Can you
- 26:12Speaker 2: approve all this mode No, not a word of it.
- 26:16Speaker 2: It's a conjecture, but conjecture that fits Matthews. When Temple
- 26:19Speaker 2: found Terry unconscious in the gard and that was his chance,
- 26:21Speaker 2: he took her. Look, Phil, Phil, you're guessing at night? Sure, sure,
- 26:25Speaker 2: I'm guessing, but not in the dock. I know how
- 26:28Speaker 2: these guys think an act. I've done too many cases
- 26:30Speaker 2: not to know. And I listen for a minute, WILLI
- 26:31Speaker 2: your Matthews? All right? Look, Temple had to get those
- 26:36Speaker 2: letters back, right, the last one in particular, because in
- 26:39Speaker 2: the last one, this is the way it's got a figure.
- 26:41Speaker 2: He had lied to Terry about being in San Francisco
- 26:43Speaker 2: with Casey yesterday when actually Casey was an Empire Oregon.
- 26:46Speaker 2: When Casey was killed up there, the fact was bound
- 26:49Speaker 2: to come out. Yeah, it's it's a good run. You
- 26:51Speaker 2: let me finish, please, all right, finish. Temple knew Terry
- 26:56Speaker 2: would find out. He knew that she couldn't stand a
- 26:58Speaker 2: liar and a partner who double cross it. Temple knew
- 27:00Speaker 2: that she'd get him and ruin him if it took
- 27:02Speaker 2: up the rest of her life. So he came back
- 27:03Speaker 2: to get the letter before she could read it. But
- 27:05Speaker 2: she hadn't left Towna's plan, ironically enough, because she didn't
- 27:09Speaker 2: want to miss one of his letters.
- 27:10Speaker 4: Yeah, but look, I'm a policeman still, I got a hat,
- 27:12Speaker 4: all right, all right, you're the policeman.
- 27:14Speaker 2: You got labs and technicians. You'll get the facts, and
- 27:17Speaker 2: I'll bet you figures, just like I said. Okay, Phil, okay.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And another thing, Matthews. But when you talk to Temple
- 27:23Speaker 2: who's holding the packet of letters now like a real
- 27:25Speaker 2: good boy, Yeah, you'll find the last one missing. It'll
- 27:27Speaker 2: be in his pocket. I'll bet you on that. I'll
- 27:30Speaker 2: let her to do it. Lieutenant.
- 27:32Speaker 4: There was one exception, Phil, How did Temple maneuver all
- 27:35Speaker 4: this getting the letters from Rose, paset it then setting
- 27:38Speaker 4: up at self defense deal?
- 27:40Speaker 2: I don't know, but my guess is that Vince got
- 27:42Speaker 2: the letters from Rose just before I arrived at her place.
- 27:45Speaker 4: But when he got into his car, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 27:47Speaker 4: Temple was waiting, slugged him, drove back to his own house,
- 27:50Speaker 4: dropped the body in the living room, shot him when
- 27:51Speaker 4: he heard you.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Coming, something like that. Man. See if you can't get
- 27:54Speaker 2: it out that way, Oh, no worry, Phil, if it's true,
- 27:57Speaker 2: we'll get it out. It'll be true.
- 28:00Speaker 11: Oh.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Now, would you ask mister Temple to come in, please,
- 28:02Speaker 2: mister Mullow, I'll be glad to Lieutenant, say Temple. Lieutenant
- 28:07Speaker 2: like to see him, all.
- 28:08Speaker 9: Right, Marlowe, I think I can speak coherently now.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Good. Good. They like to get the facts straight in there.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Go ahead, Yes, of course, good night, marlow and thanks
- 28:18Speaker 2: for your help. Oh good evening, mister Temple. Sit down
- 28:25Speaker 2: and stop talking. When I got into my car, the
- 28:43Speaker 2: new day was starting to push the black out of
- 28:46Speaker 2: the sky, and the early morning air smelled fresh and
- 28:50Speaker 2: cool and clean. Yeah, the whole night had been confused
- 28:55Speaker 2: and complicated, but I knew that by the time Matthews
- 29:00Speaker 2: miss with Temple, there'd be no questions left unanswered. That'd
- 29:06Speaker 2: be great, wouldn't it if everything could be that way,
- 29:09Speaker 2: no questions left unanswered.

- 31:54Speaker 1: Welcome back, Well, I somewhat more sedate reveal of the
- 32:00Speaker 1: murderer in some ways makes a lot more sense than
- 32:04Speaker 1: usual when Marlow will reveal what he knows or you know,
- 32:09Speaker 1: not just Marlow, but they're a wide variety of different
- 32:13Speaker 1: detectives who will basically tell what they know and put
- 32:16Speaker 1: their lives in peril. Marlow really does the smart thing,
- 32:19Speaker 1: you know, just pretends that he's totally been taken in
- 32:22Speaker 1: and then once he gets into headquarters, then he reveals
- 32:26Speaker 1: to the police that he's actually wise to what's going on.
- 32:30Speaker 1: But at any rate, that will do it for today.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Join us back here tomorrow for an episode of Nick Carter,
