- 0:00Hey everyone, I'm so glad you're here today.
- 0:03My name is Friendsly, and however you're tuning in,
- 0:07whether you're starting your morning with this or it's the
- 0:10middle of your day, or maybe you're even winding things down
- 0:14at night, I'm so grateful that we get to spend a few minutes
- 0:17together. So today we are going to be
- 0:21reading in Matthew 15 verses 21 through 28 and it is titled
- 0:28Jesus sends a demon out of a girl leaving that place.
- 0:33Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon, a Canaanite
- 0:38woman from that vicinity came to him crying out, Lord son of
- 0:43David, have mercy on me. My daughter is demon possessed
- 0:47and suffering terribly. Jesus did not answer a word, so
- 0:53his disciples came to him and urged him.
- 0:56Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us, He
- 1:00answered. I was sent only to the lost
- 1:03sheep of Israel. The woman came and knelt before
- 1:08him. Lord help me, she said.
- 1:12He replied, It is not right to take the children's bread and
- 1:16toss it to the dogs. Yes, it is Lord, she said even
- 1:20the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table.
- 1:24Then Jesus said to her, Woman, you have great faith, your
- 1:29request is granted and her daughter was healed at that
- 1:33moment. OK, there's a lot happening in
- 1:37this passage and honestly, I think for me at least, some
- 1:42parts can feel confusing. There's some terms, some phrases
- 1:46that need clarification and might not land at first, but I
- 1:52do believe that if we pay attention, there is so much
- 1:56depth. And so one of the first things
- 1:59that we notice is Jesus does not respond right away.
- 2:04The woman is here, she's crying out to him, and he clearly hears
- 2:09her, but he's silent. And that's something I think we
- 2:14should pause and think about for a second.
- 2:17Silence does not mean God's absence.
- 2:21Just because God hears us, that doesn't mean that he's always
- 2:26going to answer immediately. And I have a verse.
- 2:29It's Isaiah 6022. This is one that I memorized
- 2:34last year. And it basically is talking
- 2:38about how the Lord, he makes things happen in his timing and
- 2:42according to His plan. So sometimes y'all the waiting,
- 2:47it's intentional. That might not be what you want
- 2:51to hear, but God may be stretching your faith.
- 2:56It teaches us to keep depending on Him, to keep asking and
- 3:00seeking and knocking and to keep believing.
- 3:04And we learn patience all along the way.
- 3:07So it's important to remember that it wasn't that Jesus didn't
- 3:11want to help her. It's not that He didn't care.
- 3:15Remember his heart, guys. He is healer, but knowing God's
- 3:19heart, this also means knowing and believing that He desires
- 3:25good things for His children. Romans 828 underlines this
- 3:29perfectly that we know confidently.
- 3:33We know that in all things God works for the for the good of
- 3:38those who love Him. So in this moment, Jesus wanted
- 3:41to do something within the woman before answering the physical
- 3:45need and request that she had. He was working on the inside
- 3:50internally before addressing the external miracle.
- 3:54So let's Fast forward now to the disciples because truthfully, I
- 3:59think this is something we can all relate to at some point in
- 4:03our life and wrestle with. They are frustrated by this
- 4:08interruption. They're just bothered by the
- 4:11inconvenience. But in that frustration, they
- 4:15miss the woman's real pain that she's experiencing and what her
- 4:20daughter's real need is. And I think so often it's easy
- 4:25to get caught up in our own schedules and our plans for the
- 4:30day or kind of how we have it mapped out in her head for how
- 4:34it's going to go. I get it, truly.
- 4:37I tend to be more type A and plan everything to AT but this
- 4:44passage it's asking us to really ask God to shape our hearts more
- 4:50into his and to make us more attentive to others to give us
- 4:55the eyes to serve how Jesus would.
- 4:59And there's a verse Acts 2035. It says it is more blessed to
- 5:04give than to receive. So I just want us to become more
- 5:09aware of opportunities all around us that we get to share
- 5:13the hope of Jesus because that is why we're here.
- 5:17That's our very purpose and essence and existence.
- 5:22And so now I want to talk about the part of the story that I
- 5:28think can get kind of confusing. What I was alluding to in the
- 5:31beginning, the reference to dogs, but First off, when Jesus
- 5:36talks about being sent to the lost sheep of Israel, he's
- 5:40pointing to the fact that it's the Jewish people that were
- 5:44first given the opportunity to receive him as Messiah.
- 5:49This was God's plan all along so that the Jewish people could
- 5:53proclaim him to the rest of the world and the word dog.
- 5:58So that's a term that the Jewish people used for Gentiles and
- 6:03Gentiles are just non Jews. So I'm assuming a lot of people
- 6:08listening to this, we're not Jewish, I'm not Jewish, so we're
- 6:12Gentiles. But this was a term that was
- 6:15degrading and it revealed pride. It was the belief that God's
- 6:20blessings were reserved only for the Jewish people.
- 6:24But here's the ironic thing we need to remember a lot of Jewish
- 6:28people even up to this day, they stumble over the truth and they
- 6:35miss who Jesus was and is. While a lot of Gentiles and just
- 6:42non Jews, they're receiving him fully as their Messiah.
- 6:46And it's not an accident that Jesus in this story is teaching
- 6:51and performing this miracle in Gentile territory.
- 6:56But I do think that this moment, it's revealing something even
- 7:00bigger. The gospel, it's for everyone.
- 7:05It's for anyone and everyone who chooses to receive Jesus.
- 7:09It doesn't matter what somebody's background is or
- 7:13label or what your past looks like.
- 7:16And the woman's response, it's so powerful.
- 7:20It's incredible. She responds with pure humility.
- 7:24She doesn't argue. She's not defending herself to
- 7:27Jesus. She is so willing to accept any
- 7:31label or name if that means that her daughter will be fully
- 7:36healed. And whenever I was reading this,
- 7:39I kind of was just asking myself, like, why?
- 7:42Why would she not? I don't know.
- 7:44Why would she not kind of fight back?
- 7:46And it's because she understood something deeply important.
- 7:52Jesus. He is the only one who can
- 7:55perform this miracle. It's in Jesus that there's life.
- 7:59And she knew who she was talking to.
- 8:02She knew who's present. She was in y'all.
- 8:04She was standing before the name above all other names, Jesus,
- 8:10and nothing else mattered to her at that point.
- 8:12Her desperation. It reveals humble persistence
- 8:16because she didn't just walk away or give up after the first
- 8:20response. She waited and believed and she
- 8:23trusted and Jesus, He honors her faith.
- 8:27And so this is the big point that I want to end with because
- 8:32it is the heartbeat of just this entire message.
- 8:37Y'all, we serve the same God today.
- 8:40He is the God who parted the Red Sea, the God who appeared to
- 8:44Moses in a burning Bush, the God who reigned manna from heaven,
- 8:49the God who raised Lazarus from the dead, and Christ himself.
- 8:54Y'all, God has not changed. And so I want these stories to
- 8:58build our faith and to remind us of who God still is today.
- 9:04So with that, I'm going to close in prayer.
- 9:08Dear Father God, we come before you.
- 9:12We're so, so thankful for who you are.
- 9:16Jesus, you were the same yesterday and today and forever.
- 9:21So would you help us to trust that you're always working for
- 9:24our good, even in the quiet moments when we may not sense a
- 9:29response immediately? Would you teach us to wait with
- 9:32faith rather than fear? Make us more desperate for you,
- 9:37not just for what you can do. We know that you are the miracle
- 9:41working God, but more for who you are.
- 9:44Help us to cry out to you every single day and to praise You for
- 9:49your presence, Your presence that's always with us.
- 9:53Would you equip us to approach you boldly, just as your words
- 9:57as we can in Him and through faith in Him, we can approach
- 10:01you with boldness and confidence and freedom.
- 10:06So help us to stand firm in our faith today, God, even when it
- 10:09means being misunderstood or labeled by the outside world.
- 10:14Would you make us more aware of others needs?
- 10:18Would you use us to reflect your compassion and to share the hope
- 10:23of Jesus wherever we are, whether that is in a work
- 10:26environment or in the gym or in school with our own families?
- 10:32God, we want to be your light and radiate your light, Jesus.
- 10:36So we trust you, we praise you, we thank you for being the same
- 10:41faithful God today we pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 10:47OK, so that is that. I'm really praying that you'll
- 10:51get something out of it. And again, take it to God and
- 10:55ask him to speak to you directly.
- 10:57But I hope you all have a blessed day and I will see y'all
- 11:01tomorrow.
