Latest / The Next Round / The Next Round: Case Keenum Stuns the Eagles + Alabama-Mississippi State Showdown | Hour 1
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: We'll try not to talk about the Protect College Sports Act.
- 0:05Speaker 1: That seems to be a big talking point after it
- 0:06Speaker 1: passed last night in the Senate. Because I'm told from
- 0:09Speaker 1: Pat Forty, who covers everything college athletics, there's a, wait
- 0:13Speaker 1: for it, a 0.0% chance it ever gets voted on
- 0:17Speaker 1: in the House before the November midterms. So you're saying
- 0:21Speaker 1: there's a chance? Actually, no, I'm not saying there's a chance.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Glad we went to that effort. Yeah, but maybe they'll
- 0:27Speaker 1: get to it. I don't know what the House does
- 0:28Speaker 1: between now and November's midterm, but that's for Buck and
- 0:32Speaker 1: Clay a little bit later on, maybe. But it passed
- 0:34Speaker 1: last night easily, 77 to 22, which leaves you one
- 0:37Speaker 1: vote short of having 100 people not doing their jobs
- 0:40Speaker 1: last night. Also, we'll get to college football. A lot
- 0:43Speaker 1: of talk about Alabama's travel plans. Try to calm the
- 0:47Speaker 1: waters a little bit on that as Alabama and Mississippi
- 0:50Speaker 1: State becomes one of the biggest, if not the biggest
- 0:52Speaker 1: game in the country this weekend. We start with the
- 0:54Speaker 1: NFL last night. What a feel-good story for Case Keenum.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I could not stop watching the postgame. when he's with
- 1:03Speaker 1: his daughter and the family, and then his daughter's with
- 1:06Speaker 1: him on SVP. That was a great interview. Yeah. And
- 1:09Speaker 1: then she was just, you know, up past your bedtime,
- 1:12Speaker 1: a thousand plus days since his last start, he's 38
- 1:16Speaker 1: years old and he comes out and he patches the
- 1:19Speaker 1: gap between Caleb Williams and the bears victory lane. And
- 1:23Speaker 1: they get a win 27 to seven and Lance, it
- 1:26Speaker 1: wasn't just a win. He looked good doing it, but
- 1:28Speaker 1: it was against a pretty monstrous defense in the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know where we are on the Eagles
- 1:34Speaker 2: right now. If you go back, they beat a Commander's team.
- 1:36Speaker 2: It was a one-possession game. Then they go on the road.
- 1:39Speaker 2: They were lucky to beat the Titans last week. And
- 1:41Speaker 2: then the performance last night, I thought Jalen Hurts was
- 1:44Speaker 2: really uneven. Unfortunately for Eagles fans, Andy Dalton threw One pass,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and it was picked off in the end zone. The
- 1:52Speaker 2: defense didn't look good, but yeah, incredible story. Case Keenum
- 1:54Speaker 2: has played for 25% of the NFL. Literally eight teams,
- 1:58Speaker 2: two stints with my Rams.
- 2:00Speaker 1: For those that don't know me, where was Case Keenum
- 2:03Speaker 1: before he jumped in last night? Was he on the
- 2:05Speaker 1: roster already? Yeah, he signed with them last year. Bills
- 2:10Speaker 1: most recently, right?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Maybe before this, but he signed last year with the Bears.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Because Bill Lazar-Lazur, who's the guy with the Dolphins?
- 2:21Speaker 1: He's a front office guy.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Anyway, he introduced Ben Johnson to Case Keenum. They had
- 2:24Speaker 2: a conversation last year. It was supposed to be a
- 2:28Speaker 2: 15-minute conversation. It turned into a multi-hour conversation, and that's
- 2:31Speaker 2: what he got him because of his knowledge of the
- 2:34Speaker 2: offense to sign with the Bears. Emergency situation. Tyson Badgett
- 2:38Speaker 2: was in concussion protocol most of the week, practiced one day,
- 2:41Speaker 2: and They said, let's roll the dice. 1,000 in 10 days.
- 2:44Speaker 1: What the hell? Yeah, 1,000 in 10 days. And so,
- 2:47Speaker 1: I mean, first of all, Case Keenum getting this opportunity
- 2:50Speaker 1: is a great story. But is this just another... checkmark, star,
- 2:55Speaker 1: however you want to put it in the Ben Johnson
- 2:57Speaker 1: resume that they can call the plays this good? I
- 3:00Speaker 1: don't know if you guys saw the stat, and I
- 3:01Speaker 1: was not around. I had to pick my daughter up
- 3:03Speaker 1: from soccer, so I wasn't around for the start of
- 3:04Speaker 1: the game. So I don't know how much they talked
- 3:05Speaker 1: about it on the actual broadcast, but on the NFL
- 3:07Speaker 1: shows leading up, that is the first time Ben Johnson
- 3:10Speaker 1: has ever, as a coordinator or head coach, had a
- 3:12Speaker 1: backup quarterback play. Oh, wow. I mean, I thought that
- 3:15Speaker 1: was pretty remarkable in the NFL. It's hard to believe,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I guess.
- 3:18Speaker 2: But Jared Goff, when he was a coordinator, was pretty durable.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and then Caleb Williams all last year. So Ben
- 3:23Speaker 1: Johnson had never really been in this situation.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So I would say, yeah, that's a check. But the
- 3:27Speaker 2: last start, Christmas Eve of 2023. Yeah, 38 years old.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I mean, everybody thinks Stafford's old and Aaron Rodgers. Well,
- 3:35Speaker 2: I guess Aaron Rodgers is older, but. I mean, Case
- 3:37Speaker 2: Keenum's up there.
- 3:38Speaker 1: By the way, Aaron Rodgers' team's 2-1, and he looked
- 3:40Speaker 1: pretty dang good throwing the football the other day. He
- 3:43Speaker 1: looks a lot younger this year than he did last year.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So you asked the question. I don't know where we
- 3:46Speaker 1: are on the Eagles. The other day, I was riding
- 3:49Speaker 1: around listening to SiriusXM Prime Country. That's my choice on
- 3:52Speaker 1: SiriusXM Prime Country. And the girl comes on, and she's like,
- 3:55Speaker 1: if you want more sports, we now have... Local sports
- 3:58Speaker 1: talk stations on Sirius XM 94 or 95. By the way,
- 4:02Speaker 1: I rode with Brown to and from Auburn. Oh, I
- 4:05Speaker 1: didn't know that. Oh, yeah. He brought it up last
- 4:07Speaker 1: week on the show how much he's listened to the fans.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I heard him say the fan, but I didn't put
- 4:12Speaker 2: it together with.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Sirius XM's carry. So we're coming back from Auburn, and
- 4:15Speaker 1: he is bouncing me around. Let's see what they're talking
- 4:18Speaker 1: about in Philly. Let's see what they're talking about in
- 4:20Speaker 1: New York. Let's see what they're talking about in Chicago.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Let's see what they're talking about in San Francisco. A
- 4:24Speaker 1: lot of NBA that day, by the way. I was like,
- 4:26Speaker 1: my goodness. So much NBA because everybody was doing their
- 4:28Speaker 1: media days. It's still a big sport. But you know
- 4:32Speaker 1: what I wanted to hear? The NFL games coming up
- 4:34Speaker 1: in all these major markets because I want to hear
- 4:36Speaker 1: what they were saying anyway. So this morning I turned
- 4:38Speaker 1: on WIP in Philadelphia. It's like Sirius XM 96 or
- 4:41Speaker 1: something like that. WIP, I'm like, I bet this is
- 4:44Speaker 1: a meltdown. Boy, was I so satisfied. It was a meltdown.
- 4:49Speaker 1: I mean, they are pissed at Sirianni. They're pissed at
- 4:52Speaker 1: the defense. They don't think they've got a good roster.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I mean, it was everything you could complain about. I mean, look,
- 4:58Speaker 1: they were running the football effectively. I mean, Saquon averaged
- 5:01Speaker 1: five and a half yards a carry. That was the
- 5:03Speaker 1: worst offensive performance in the Nick Sirianni era for whatever
- 5:07Speaker 1: that's worth.
- 5:08Speaker 2: But 10 penalties. Three turnovers. They haven't had a takeaway
- 5:11Speaker 2: in their first three games, which is pretty hard to
- 5:13Speaker 2: do unless you're the Jets.
- 5:15Speaker 1: One of the morning show hosts in WIP in Philadelphia
- 5:17Speaker 1: thinks Sirianni's calling more plays now. That's his theory. So
- 5:21Speaker 1: they're in the Gus Malzahn, Rhett Lashley, the Hugh and
- 5:25Speaker 1: Monty era? I got to tell you, Cotty, I think
- 5:29Speaker 1: Nick's back to calling the plays. Do you really? I do.
- 5:32Speaker 1: He's only calling the bad plays.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Did they bring up A.J. Brown ain't walking through that door?
- 5:37Speaker 1: They did not bring up A.J. Brown ain't walking through
- 5:39Speaker 1: that door. They got pissed at Sirianni for not, well,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I shouldn't say pissed. They were questioning whether he should
- 5:43Speaker 1: have taken a timeout. when Hurts went into a concussion.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Oh, he should have, because if you didn't know, I mean,
- 5:47Speaker 2: you saw how animated Hurts was. Like, take the timeout.
- 5:51Speaker 2: It's third down. Even if you're going to run a
- 5:55Speaker 2: play there, I know he's a veteran in Andy Dalton.
- 5:57Speaker 1: He's played a lot of football. Don't throw the ball, though. Yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 1: it's like almost you've got to do something really safe
- 6:02Speaker 1: in that situation. I mean, at least protect the three.
- 6:04Speaker 1: You've got to keep, yeah, that's right. Jalen at least
- 6:07Speaker 1: can run it and protect the three. Yeah, protect the three.
- 6:10Speaker 1: If you bring Dalton in and be like, Let's do
- 6:12Speaker 1: something safe, kick a field goal here. It's not ideal,
- 6:15Speaker 1: but we can't leave with nothing.
- 6:16Speaker 2: But if I would have told you three total touchdowns
- 6:18Speaker 2: for one of the starting quarterbacks, one rushing and two throwing,
- 6:21Speaker 2: you would have said 100%.
- 6:22Speaker 1: It was the other side. That's right, yes. If you
- 6:24Speaker 1: had told me Case Keenum was starting, I would have
- 6:26Speaker 1: never turned it on to start with. I got caught
- 6:28Speaker 1: into just it being such a great story. And him
- 6:31Speaker 1: playing so well, it just drew me in. 247 yards,
- 6:35Speaker 1: two touchdowns, runs one in, and they win the game 27-7.
- 6:38Speaker 1: How long is Caleb out? He could be back next week.
- 6:42Speaker 2: It is a week-to-week thing. I don't think he's going
- 6:44Speaker 2: to be back next week.
- 6:45Speaker 1: But they'll go back to Bajent, right? I don't know.
- 6:48Speaker 1: You can't expect Case Keenum to do this week in,
- 6:50Speaker 1: week out. The guy's 100. I mean, if he understands
- 6:54Speaker 1: the offense so well, he made the plays, he's a veteran.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Maybe it's one special night, but he did nothing last
- 7:00Speaker 1: night to not ride with him until he until Caleb's
- 7:02Speaker 1: back 100.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I don't think they can keep it up, but they
- 7:05Speaker 2: do have two capable running backs, really good backs, and
- 7:09Speaker 2: you've got multiple tight ends, and Luther Burden is a
- 7:11Speaker 2: guy that can make some.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Plays in the perimeter.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So in this offense, it might work for a couple
- 7:17Speaker 2: of weeks. If you want to get to where they
- 7:19Speaker 2: want to ultimately get to, they've got to get Caleb
- 7:21Speaker 2: Williams back. I don't know if you guys saw the postgame,
- 7:23Speaker 2: but it was a really emotional speech for Case Keenum
- 7:26Speaker 2: in the locker room.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And standing behind him was Caleb Williams in a robe.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Did you see that? I didn't notice the robe.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Everybody else has got their pads on.
- 7:35Speaker 1: He's wearing a robe. He's wearing a robe. Just shaking
- 7:39Speaker 1: his head. No, but the one you mentioned. First of all,
- 7:42Speaker 1: SVP's a very good interviewer. And Keenum's got his daughter
- 7:46Speaker 1: sitting in his lap. And you can tell he's emotional.
- 7:48Speaker 1: That was really cool. That was good for him, man.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Because as SVP pointed out, Last time you played meaningful football,
- 7:54Speaker 1: your kids aren't old enough to remember that. This girl
- 7:57Speaker 1: right here has got a chance of remembering this night.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we all forget how close Case Keenum
- 8:01Speaker 2: was to a Super Bowl. Remember when Stephon Diggs had
- 8:04Speaker 2: the walk-off against the Saints in the divisional round? Then
- 8:07Speaker 2: Case Keenum was the starting quarterback for the Vikings when
- 8:09Speaker 2: they hosted Nick Foles in Philadelphia.
- 8:10Speaker 1: That's right.
- 8:11Speaker 2: But then Foles in Philadelphia made it out.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Keenum was really, really close.
- 8:15Speaker 2: To potentially being a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
- 8:18Speaker 1: So 25% of the league he's played for. Yeah, eight teams. Now,
- 8:21Speaker 1: Ryan Fitzpatrick. Can you name them all? Minnesota. Minnesota, Philadelphia, Buffalo. Minnesota, Chicago,
- 8:29Speaker 1: Buffalo for sure.
- 8:30Speaker 2: The Texans, the Rams, the Bears now, the Vikings, and
- 8:39Speaker 2: there's one more.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Lions? I got you. Let me know when you're ready
- 8:47Speaker 1: to give up. You've missed. You've missed two, actually.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 8:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you duplicated the Bears. We got Bears, Texans, Bills, Browns.
- 8:57Speaker 1: God bless them.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Rams.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Rams.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Vikings.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Vikings. Broncos, Commanders. That's the eight. Commanders.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I would have never got the Commanders.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Pretty good story. And now Chicago is... Up
- 9:10Speaker 1: with the best. We'll do our NFL power rankings tomorrow.
- 9:12Speaker 1: You guys will send them to the Brooks if you
- 9:13Speaker 1: haven't yet, Brown. I have not yet, Jim.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the Bears aren't going to be there
- 9:17Speaker 2: for me right now when Caleb Williams comes back possibly.
- 9:21Speaker 2: The Dennis Allen defense, I think, was a story. And look,
- 9:23Speaker 2: this Philadelphia offense is uneven right now, 2-9 on third
- 9:27Speaker 2: downs last night, less than 250 total yards with the
- 9:30Speaker 2: three turnovers. But if the Dennis Allen defense can just
- 9:33Speaker 2: limit teams to 17 to 21 points per Every single Sunday,
- 9:38Speaker 2: they're going to be in a great spot. Also in
- 9:40Speaker 2: the NFL yesterday, J.J. McCarthy gets traded to the New
- 9:45Speaker 2: York Giants for a fifth-round draft pick in the 2027
- 9:50Speaker 2: draft coming up. They say Jameis Winston will still be QB1,
- 9:55Speaker 2: but JJ's got to learn the offense a little bit, right?
- 9:59Speaker 1: Maybe? Yeah, I just don't know why.
- 10:01Speaker 2: This is such a weird situation because now you're going
- 10:05Speaker 2: to be paying JJ McCarthy, who was selected in the
- 10:08Speaker 2: same round as your starting quarterback now in Jackson Dart,
- 10:13Speaker 2: You're paying J.J. McCarthy more money than you're paying Jackson Dart.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Which makes no sense.
- 10:16Speaker 2: I don't know how much J.J. McCarthy's going to play.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I don't know how big of a factor he'll be. Obviously,
- 10:21Speaker 2: this was a conversation between his college coach, Jim Harbaugh,
- 10:24Speaker 2: and now his current coach, John Harbaugh.
- 10:25Speaker 4: That's right.
- 10:26Speaker 2: And saying, hey, I think this guy could work for you.
- 10:28Speaker 2: The thing they love is his athleticism, and that's what
- 10:30Speaker 2: you have with Jackson Dart.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Well, obviously, they won this past weekend thanks to the
- 10:36Speaker 1: Nor'easter and the Titans, 12-7, so they've got to win.
- 10:40Speaker 1: But their roster, everywhere but quarterback— was a playoff contender.
- 10:45Speaker 1: So they were like, hey, fifth round draft pick for
- 10:48Speaker 1: a potential one-time first round draft pick, potential guy that
- 10:53Speaker 1: could fit our system. They went all in and say, okay,
- 10:55Speaker 1: we're only giving up a fifth. That's valuable real estate,
- 10:58Speaker 1: but we're going to give it up. Going to pay
- 11:00Speaker 1: a little extra money to have two first-round quarterbacks on
- 11:02Speaker 1: our roster and see if we can find something the
- 11:05Speaker 1: Vikings were unable to find. When you've got the roster
- 11:07Speaker 1: in this period of time, you've got to go ahead
- 11:09Speaker 1: and gamble, I guess.
- 11:09Speaker 2: You guys remember when Jackson Dart came in middle of
- 11:12Speaker 2: the season last year and just kind of the resurgence
- 11:15Speaker 2: for that entire team and just the energy that he
- 11:17Speaker 2: infused him in Scataboo. Imagine if J.J. McCarthy comes in
- 11:21Speaker 2: and plays well. then what do you do with Jackson
- 11:24Speaker 2: Dart and J.J.
- 11:25Speaker 1: McCarthy?
- 11:25Speaker 2: Then do you have.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I don't know. You've got two guys on a rookie deal,
- 11:29Speaker 1: so it's not the most expensive situation. Yeah. I think if... Oh,
- 11:33Speaker 1: if Dart comes back? No, Dart's not coming back this year,
- 11:36Speaker 1: but I'm saying... But you mean if he finishes... If J.J.
- 11:38Speaker 2: McCarthy plays and they end up going 10-7 and he's
- 11:40Speaker 2: playing really well, where's Jackson Dart's confidence coming into the
- 11:45Speaker 2: next season?
- 11:45Speaker 1: Try to trade one of them. Yeah. I think I'd
- 11:47Speaker 1: still ride with Jackson Dart.
- 11:50Speaker 5: And.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I don't know. Can you hold on to two? By
- 11:52Speaker 1: the way, this just shows what I always talk about
- 11:55Speaker 1: on the show. Like the Dolphins got called for a
- 11:57Speaker 1: very frustrating roughing the passer because, of course, it was Mahomes. And,
- 12:02Speaker 1: you know, I got pissed about it. But then I think,
- 12:04Speaker 1: of course, this weekend, Jameis Winston is starting a game
- 12:06Speaker 1: in case Keenum starting a game, which you hate it
- 12:09Speaker 1: when it's called on your team roughing the passer. But
- 12:11Speaker 1: you get it right. Why the NFL protects the quarterback
- 12:13Speaker 1: so much. Because we're into week four of the NFL,
- 12:17Speaker 1: and in week three we've already had Jameis Winston start
- 12:19Speaker 1: a game and Case Keenum start a game.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Well, when Jalen Hurts went out last night and they
- 12:23Speaker 2: had to put him in the tent just to review
- 12:25Speaker 2: for the concussion, that hit, if that would have been
- 12:27Speaker 2: on a Kyler Murray, it would have sent him into
- 12:29Speaker 2: the stands.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Jalen's a big guy.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I mean, it wasn't a dirty hit, but I understand
- 12:33Speaker 2: why they're going to throw the flag. And you know
- 12:34Speaker 2: that was obviously offsetting penalties because there was a hold
- 12:37Speaker 2: on the Eagles. But boy, that's one of those that
- 12:41Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts can take.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Not to hit the wrong quarterback. Yeah, they're out for
- 12:45Speaker 1: a couple of weeks. We've jacked up the kickoff so much.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Why don't we just make the quarterbacks, they can't run,
- 12:51Speaker 1: and they're down by contact. You touch them, standing up.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Some people in the chat yesterday, in reference to the
- 12:58Speaker 1: Dante Moore situation, were talking about it might actually make
- 13:02Speaker 1: it safer now if the slide was eliminated. Yeah. That's
- 13:05Speaker 1: what we were talking about. You kind of sort of
- 13:07Speaker 1: brought that up.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Like a lot of quarterbacks– won't slide like that because
- 13:10Speaker 2: you don't know what to do. You give yourself up 100%.
- 13:14Speaker 1: They're legitimate NFL, not NFL, quarterback coaches who believe that
- 13:22Speaker 1: sliding puts you at more risk than taking a hit.
- 13:25Speaker 1: The fear that the coaching should be to teach your
- 13:29Speaker 1: quarterback how to take a hit, to avoid a direct hit.
- 13:31Speaker 1: The only fear I have is a guy going low
- 13:33Speaker 1: because now you can blow my quarterback's knee up and
- 13:37Speaker 1: now I'm really screwed. Of course, Oregon's screwed right now
- 13:40Speaker 1: if Dante Moore's out for an extended period of time,
- 13:42Speaker 1: which I don't know that he will be. It's concussion.
- 13:45Speaker 1: You never know with those things.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I saw something in a game Sunday that I haven't seen.
- 13:49Speaker 1: It was Chargers and Bills.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Josh Allen is rolling around, gets in a situation where
- 13:54Speaker 2: he's got nothing downfield, can't get out of bounds. He
- 13:57Speaker 2: takes a knee in the middle of three Chargers defenders.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:01Speaker 2: I guess that's safer than sliding. Well, yeah, and he
- 14:03Speaker 2: got popped, and it wasn't really much. And, of course,
- 14:06Speaker 2: he's begging for the flag, as he always does.
- 14:08Speaker 1: That's all Josh Allen does.
- 14:08Speaker 2: But, you know, that– I guess that's one way you
- 14:11Speaker 2: could do it.
- 14:12Speaker 1: It looks worse than a slide. It looks so awkward.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I'm not going to use the E word on the end.
- 14:18Speaker 1: It looks like a poon move. That's the other thing
- 14:20Speaker 1: they were talking about on Philadelphia Sports Radio. Sirianni got
- 14:22Speaker 1: caught on camera using that word. And they're debating, is
- 14:26Speaker 1: he too emotional now? It's undefeated. Not the way he's
- 14:29Speaker 1: using it, but it's undefeated.
- 14:30Speaker 2: You talk about Sirianni, and he's not a very likable
- 14:33Speaker 2: guy unless he's your guy.
- 14:34Speaker 1: And obviously Philly fans... I don't know how much loyalty
- 14:38Speaker 1: is there.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I saw it last night, the best September record in
- 14:45Speaker 2: NFL history.
- 14:45Speaker 1: He's got two Super Bowl appearances.
- 14:47Speaker 2: He's got a Super Bowl ring.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I know, but boy, he gets no respect. He does. Tyler,

- 16:07Speaker 1: in Miami yesterday, greatest sports organization in the world or
- 16:11Speaker 1: league in the world is the National Football League. Correct.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Better than the Premier League. It is number one in
- 16:17Speaker 1: the world, the way they do business. In Miami yesterday,
- 16:22Speaker 1: Jeff Halfley walks up to do his weekly news conference,
- 16:27Speaker 1: or at least his latest news conference. It's usually a
- 16:30Speaker 1: pretty big one on Monday after an NFL Sunday. Here
- 16:34Speaker 1: is Jeff Halfley down in the Miami complex. Got everybody
- 16:43Speaker 1: that's coming? It's heat media day. It's heat media day.
- 16:48Speaker 2: I got you.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Is that everybody that's coming?
- 16:51Speaker 5: All right.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Small crowd, and everybody's at the Heat media day. I mean, that's, well,
- 17:02Speaker 1: first of all, it's a testament to how bad my
- 17:04Speaker 1: franchise is right now.
- 17:05Speaker 2: I think the Heat is bigger, though, in Miami.
- 17:07Speaker 1: It may be. I don't know. The NFL's always bigger.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I'm just saying for that Miami population, because they had
- 17:13Speaker 2: a lot of success.
- 17:14Speaker 1: The Dolphins, unfortunately, you know this. I think ultimately it'll
- 17:16Speaker 1: be a Dolphins town. The Heat have just won championships,
- 17:19Speaker 1: as the Dolphins have. But I think ultimately in the
- 17:21Speaker 1: end run, it's the Dolphins town. And the NFL is
- 17:23Speaker 1: always bigger. The NFL is always bigger, yeah. But that's
- 17:26Speaker 1: also a testament to the industry, man. There are fewer
- 17:28Speaker 1: and fewer people working for newspapers or TV stations and
- 17:33Speaker 1: things like that. Yeah. That's it? For those that, you know,
- 17:38Speaker 1: the coaches don't like the media or anything, when there's
- 17:41Speaker 1: nobody there, it's usually a pretty sign you're not doing
- 17:44Speaker 1: a very important job. That's right. You show up and
- 17:46Speaker 1: you're like, this is it? This is it? That's all
- 17:48Speaker 1: we got. Just you, bro, with that recorder you're placing
- 17:50Speaker 1: up here? Let's go. Can we just make this a one-on-one?
- 17:53Speaker 1: Everybody want to get a one-on-one real quick? The most
- 17:57Speaker 1: amazing sound coming out of the weekend is from the
- 18:00Speaker 1: USC radio broadcast. Before you hit it, Tyler, let me
- 18:04Speaker 1: set everybody up for this. Let's see, where is this?
- 18:08Speaker 1: I wrote down the guys' names. Okay, you've got Peter Abergast.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Pete Arbogast, yeah. Pete Arbogast, who's been on the show.
- 18:15Speaker 1: That's right. He's a play-by-play voice. He'll be the guy
- 18:18Speaker 1: in the Hawaiian USC shirt. The Analyst. who you'll want
- 18:22Speaker 1: to stay until the very end of this clip, is
- 18:25Speaker 1: Sean Cody. And you watch his facial expression here. During
- 18:30Speaker 1: the Dante Moore hit, this is what was going on
- 18:33Speaker 1: on USC radio. And, by the way, this was cut
- 18:37Speaker 1: out for sure. This was cut out and put into
- 18:39Speaker 1: the Oregon postgame hype video. Is that correct? That is correct.
- 18:43Speaker 1: This is part of a 21-and-a-half-minute cinematic recap of the
- 18:49Speaker 1: game put out on Oregon's official Twitter account. Okay, so
- 18:54Speaker 1: from Oregon, they have snipped this off. Usually broadcast teams
- 18:59Speaker 1: on Facebook or Instagram, they've got just a camera on
- 19:02Speaker 1: the booth now. They're sponsoring it, and people want to
- 19:05Speaker 1: watch the broadcast team do it. Alabama does it. I
- 19:07Speaker 1: think Auburn does it. So you're able to watch your
- 19:09Speaker 1: broadcast team and watch you know, call the game and
- 19:12Speaker 1: all that. And this is how it is actually put
- 19:15Speaker 1: out by Oregon, not AI. This is really during the
- 19:18Speaker 1: Dante Moore hit, how it played on USC radio. He
- 19:21Speaker 1: did not.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Try to slide feet first, and Stevens went in helmet first,
- 19:26Speaker 3: but he kind of ran into... Dante Moore, who ducked
- 19:30Speaker 3: into that hit. I did not see him put his
- 19:32Speaker 3: feet out first.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I saw him dive forward. He's laying feet first. He
- 19:38Speaker 1: is now because I spun him around. I want to
- 19:40Speaker 1: see the replay. Here he goes down into it.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah, not a feet first slide, more of a knee slide.
- 19:46Speaker 3: It didn't look like targeting on the replay to us.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Yeah. my man the analyst is like i ain't going out.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Of this shit just just own it pete you didn't see.
- 19:57Speaker 1: It yeah pete his uh pete his feet are stuck
- 20:01Speaker 1: well they are now yeah pete knows where that check
- 20:03Speaker 1: comes from first off They got USC on that check there,
- 20:07Speaker 1: but O'Shaughnessy looking at the audience. I like the spotter
- 20:10Speaker 1: in the background, too. Don't miss the spotter. He's like,
- 20:13Speaker 1: this is a piss poor call. Play it again. The
- 20:15Speaker 1: spotters are always even more animated than the play-by-play guy.
- 20:18Speaker 1: The spotter doesn't have a microphone, so he's got to
- 20:20Speaker 1: be animated.
- 20:21Speaker 3: He did not try to slide feet first, and Stevens
- 20:25Speaker 3: went in helmet first, but he kind of ran into...
- 20:28Speaker 3: Dante Moore, who ducked into that hit. I did not
- 20:32Speaker 3: see him put his feet out first. I saw him
- 20:34Speaker 3: dive forward.
- 20:36Speaker 1: He's laying feet first. He is now because they spun
- 20:39Speaker 1: him around. I want to see the replay. Here he
- 20:42Speaker 1: goes down into it.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Yeah, not a feet first slide, more of a knee slide.
- 20:46Speaker 3: It didn't look like targeting on the replay to us.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Spider's like, rub some dirt on it and get up, Dante.
- 20:52Speaker 1: This is like.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Like an office reaction right here.
- 20:57Speaker 1: I would agree, yeah. It didn't look like targeting. Oh,
- 21:02Speaker 1: that is amazing. Amazing. And Oregon all in on putting
- 21:05Speaker 1: it out. Sean Cody with it. That was fantastic.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Oregon has become the most petty trolling program.
- 21:11Speaker 1: They really, I mean, it comes from the coach a
- 21:13Speaker 1: little bit, right? Dan Lanning loves it, doesn't he? Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Is this that heated a rivalry or is this just
- 21:18Speaker 1: Dan Lanning being Dan Lanning? I think it's Dan Lanning
- 21:20Speaker 1: and Lincoln Riley.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Well, and they battle for a lot of the same guys.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Oregon's biggest recruiting base is Southern California. So, I mean,
- 21:28Speaker 1: I get it. And I think it's hilarious because, you know,
- 21:33Speaker 1: I'm done with Lincoln. I'm done. I think most people are.
- 21:36Speaker 1: His feet are out, Pete. Well, they are now. They
- 21:39Speaker 1: are now. Yes. Pete was like, you rearranged his anatomy.
- 21:42Speaker 1: He's got a bullet hole in his chest. Well, he
- 21:44Speaker 1: does now. Well, he does now. But he shouldn't have
- 21:46Speaker 1: run into the bullet. He saw the guy with the gun.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Who do you want as the next coach at USC?
- 21:53Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not ready to go Buster Faulkner. I
- 21:56Speaker 2: do think Bob Chesney. I mean, just every time I
- 21:58Speaker 2: watch them play, and I don't think it's going to happen.
- 22:00Speaker 1: That would be such a villain move. But, I mean,
- 22:02Speaker 1: we saw.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Texas and Texas A & M switch a baseball.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Coach, right? Yeah, baseball's different, but yeah. It is very different.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I know Brown said, I'm not ready to say that Chesney...
- 22:12Speaker 2: I feel like we've been quick on this guy. Yeah,
- 22:15Speaker 2: we have, but I don't know. I just like disciplined programs,
- 22:19Speaker 2: and you don't see.
- 22:20Speaker 1: A lot of them. I watched... I've watched more of
- 22:24Speaker 1: their games than I realized I would because they play
- 22:27Speaker 1: that late-night game so much. And they look good, and
- 22:30Speaker 1: they look well-coached, but what's the combined record of their wins?
- 22:36Speaker 1: San Diego State's been bad. Cal has been bad, and
- 22:39Speaker 1: Maryland is awful. I don't want to discount it either
- 22:43Speaker 1: because I do think he's done a good job.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I think John Sumrall has buried himself in the South
- 22:47Speaker 2: way too long. I think he needs to just go
- 22:49Speaker 2: try the West.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Coast for about a decade. Obviously, we'll talk Alabama throughout
- 22:56Speaker 1: the show. Kalen DeBoer will be a popular name.
- 23:00Speaker 2: And Alabama still, as good as they are, and look,
- 23:02Speaker 2: they might end up going 16-0. I think they've got
- 23:05Speaker 2: losses coming up, so... even if you get to the
- 23:07Speaker 2: end of the year and Kalen's won 10 or 11
- 23:09Speaker 2: games and has won a playoff game or two, I
- 23:12Speaker 2: think it's always on the table.
- 23:13Speaker 1: It's going to be now. It's going to be a
- 23:15Speaker 1: Kalen decision if he ever leaves. Yeah. Now Jimmy Sexton
- 23:19Speaker 1: might be able to fleece Greg Byrne on the Michigan
- 23:22Speaker 1: job at the Penn State job. That's going to be
- 23:23Speaker 1: a hard fleecing on the USC job. Yeah. I just,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I mean, Jimmy Sexton, that's going to be a hard
- 23:29Speaker 1: one to sell. I'm just saying there are a lot
- 23:31Speaker 1: of programs that will want Kalen DeBoer as a, Time continues.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Are you saying that's with Jimmy Sexton, not just saying
- 23:39Speaker 2: it to say it like.
- 23:41Speaker 1: No, I'm saying that's going to be a hard sell
- 23:42Speaker 1: to get more money out of Alabama for. Oh, I
- 23:45Speaker 1: got to do it again.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm just saying, all I'm saying is that would be
- 23:49Speaker 1: so really Kaylin is going to leave Alabama and go
- 23:51Speaker 1: out there and have a half full stadium. and have
- 23:56Speaker 1: to fly all the way across the country to play
- 23:58Speaker 1: all these games and have to be a misfit in
- 24:00Speaker 1: a conference. You really want me to believe that one, Jimmy?
- 24:03Speaker 1: I believed you on Michigan. I'm not believing you on
- 24:05Speaker 1: this one. Yeah, he was at Washington. You remember that, right?
- 24:07Speaker 1: That's right.
- 24:07Speaker 6: I do.
- 24:08Speaker 2: So you really don't think it's a possibility?
- 24:11Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's not a possibility. I'm saying... I'm
- 24:13Speaker 1: sorry I brought it up at this point. What? No,
- 24:16Speaker 1: I'm saying... No, we went down a totally different road. I.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I think it would be a possibility.
- 24:23Speaker 2: If he decides that he is not happy at Alabama,
- 24:27Speaker 2: if he's not getting the respect to the fan base,
- 24:30Speaker 2: and for whatever that means to him, it doesn't mean
- 24:32Speaker 2: a lot to Ryan Grubb, then, you know, a logical place?
- 24:37Speaker 2: There's only so many really good jobs on the West Coast, right?
- 24:40Speaker 1: That's right. And that's the only way, I believe. Yeah,
- 24:43Speaker 1: I agree. Because it's too much money for Alabama to
- 24:45Speaker 1: ever fire him again. The success is there.
- 24:48Speaker 4: They're 4-0.
- 24:49Speaker 1: They're ranked No. 7 in the country. I don't think
- 24:51Speaker 1: we're in a fleecing year from Jimmy Sexton. Jimmy's always fleecing.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Look, I think it's going to be a really good
- 24:57Speaker 2: year for DeBoer again.
- 24:58Speaker 1: I do too. I do too.
- 25:00Speaker 2: With that said, you just never know what somebody is
- 25:03Speaker 2: going to do if they're not 100% happy. And I'm
- 25:07Speaker 2: not saying he's not.
- 25:08Speaker 1: That's right. We don't know. We're not inside his head.
- 25:10Speaker 1: But I'm just saying there are always teams that are
- 25:14Speaker 1: going to want this guy. That's how– I only brought
- 25:17Speaker 1: it up to– to let Alabama fans know again how
- 25:22Speaker 1: wanted this coach is going to be. He was wanted
- 25:25Speaker 1: last year by Michigan, and if Lincoln Riley is bounced,
- 25:28Speaker 1: he'll be wanted by USC.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And he is in a great spot. He knows that.
- 25:32Speaker 2: But in his head, there's probably two, three, four, five
- 25:35Speaker 2: jobs that he might consider based on circumstances, and I
- 25:38Speaker 2: think USC would be one of those jobs.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Later, we've got Jeff Collins on the show. The coach,
- 25:46Speaker 1: and now he's just, you know, during this period of
- 25:48Speaker 1: his life, breaking down tape and doing some media work.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Unbelievable breakdown of some Alabama tape. So we'll talk to
- 25:54Speaker 1: Jeff Collins about Alabama and some other things coming up
- 25:57Speaker 1: to start Hour 2, 11 Eastern, 10 Central. After that,
- 26:01Speaker 1: we'll do our upset alert with a new leader and
- 26:06Speaker 1: two guys who said opposite of one of the new
- 26:08Speaker 1: leaders who plan on getting hot on the upset alert.
- 26:11Speaker 1: That's coming up on the show. But when we come back,
- 26:14Speaker 1: When we come back, travel plans for Alabama, the Nick
- 26:17Speaker 1: Saban documentary, and eventually we'll get to the hunted in
- 26:21Speaker 1: college football. Can six new teams handle being the hunted?
- 26:26Speaker 1: All that when we come back on the next round
- 26:29Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bet right here on Sporting State.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys follow recruiting. Hayes Fawcett
- 26:36Speaker 1: just sent out a notable flip coming later today. All right.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Which means today's the first day of flip season, if
- 26:42Speaker 1: you follow recruiting. Happy Flipmas. Happy Flipmas. Let's see, Forrester,
- 26:48Speaker 1: let's do one of these great little videos coming out.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Speaking of Flipmas, Will Stein, Kentucky, is supposed to do
- 26:54Speaker 1: some good. I sort of like this. They're on the
- 26:56Speaker 1: road this week, but their next home game is against LSU.
- 27:00Speaker 1: This is the Kentucky I grew up with, all right?
- 27:03Speaker 1: They're bringing the Power K back in a throwback uniform
- 27:07Speaker 1: game against LSU today. They're putting the Power K in
- 27:10Speaker 1: the middle of the field. So this was the helmet,
- 27:14Speaker 1: the uniform of my youth with Kentucky. They haven't worn
- 27:18Speaker 1: these since 1996. It's a good-looking uniform. And they're going
- 27:22Speaker 1: to bring it back. I do like the colors. The
- 27:26Speaker 1: K's a little shaky. Yeah, I don't like the cats
- 27:28Speaker 1: in the stripe. I don't remember that. Yeah, I don't
- 27:30Speaker 1: like the cats in the stripe. I don't like the
- 27:31Speaker 1: Kentucky checkerboard. I don't understand why they use the checkers.
- 27:35Speaker 1: It's for horse racing, right? Yeah, that's right. Something to
- 27:37Speaker 1: do with horse racing. But it feels like you're too
- 27:39Speaker 1: close to Tennessee. That's right.
- 27:40Speaker 2: I don't like the Tennessee checkerboard.
- 27:42Speaker 1: I know, but I think of Tennessee when I think
- 27:43Speaker 1: of checkerboard. It's at least historic with Tennessee, yeah. I
- 27:47Speaker 1: think UK is their better logo, the interlocking UK. Yeah.
- 27:50Speaker 1: But I like the white helmets and that K. But
- 27:53Speaker 1: you're right. The K is a little shaky. While we're
- 27:55Speaker 1: on this, they wear a Wildcat emblem on their shoulder.
- 27:59Speaker 1: I hate that, too. And I think that's the only
- 28:01Speaker 1: place they wear it. Like basketball doesn't use it. I'm like,
- 28:03Speaker 1: why does football have its own Wildcat? They've used it
- 28:06Speaker 1: on their. shorts have they it's an ugly wild it
- 28:09Speaker 1: is i don't like it at all it's too it
- 28:11Speaker 1: looks too much like a real wildcat it's a bad
- 28:13Speaker 1: looking yeah lean into the unk.
- 28:14Speaker 2: I mean blue and white great color combination the kentucky
- 28:18Speaker 2: has jacked up their basketball uniforms in the past when
- 28:20Speaker 2: they had the claws all over on the stripes like
- 28:23Speaker 2: that yeah and then the the you know the football
- 28:25Speaker 2: did it with the silver yeah i never understood.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Tell us about xxxy and then uh i'll talk about
- 28:31Speaker 1: a little of the uh The travel plans for Alabama,
- 28:34Speaker 1: Alabama-Mississippi State, one of the biggest, if not the biggest
- 28:36Speaker 1: game in the country this weekend, 85 miles apart. Jennifer Say,
- 28:41Speaker 1: she was a national champion gymnast and former national championship
- 28:45Speaker 1: gymnast and then went to Levi's. She was brand president
- 28:48Speaker 1: at Levi's. And she walked away from that corporate job
- 28:50Speaker 1: rather than say something she did not believe in. When
- 28:52Speaker 1: she did, she started XXXY Athletics instead. They call it
- 28:57Speaker 1: the T that launched a movement, and their words, their mission,
- 29:01Speaker 1: empower female athletes and take a stand for fair competition.
- 29:04Speaker 1: It is real athletic apparel, not just a slogan on
- 29:06Speaker 1: a shirt. Performance tops, tanks, sports bras, leggings, shorts, training sets. hoodies, hats,
- 29:11Speaker 1: graphic tees, men's and women's clothing, and also they are
- 29:15Speaker 1: the official Nashville Balls gear distributor. You can get Clay Travis'
- 29:19Speaker 1: future WNBA franchise gear there with Nashville Balls merch. This
- 29:24Speaker 1: is worn by athletes that have put something on the line,
- 29:26Speaker 1: and you can get it for yourself at XXXYAthletics.com. That
- 29:30Speaker 1: is XX-XYAthletics.com. New customers get 20% off your first order
- 29:35Speaker 1: when you sign up. Free shipping over $ 100. XXXYAthletics. LT,
- 29:41Speaker 1: when you look at the schedule, I know Ohio State, Iowa,
- 29:44Speaker 1: they've got game day. That's two ranked teams there. I
- 29:48Speaker 1: don't really see a path to victory for Iowa. Maybe
- 29:50Speaker 1: I'm wrong. Maybe it's going to pop up on somebody's
- 29:52Speaker 1: upset alert. I think there are two touchdown dogs in
- 29:54Speaker 1: that game, are there not? Yeah, there are 13 and
- 29:56Speaker 1: a half right now. I mean, to me, the biggest
- 29:58Speaker 1: game in the country. I just don't think Clemson can
- 30:00Speaker 1: play with Miami Clemson. Also a two-touchdown dog, right? More
- 30:02Speaker 1: than two touchdowns at home. Is it that big? Yeah,
- 30:05Speaker 1: it's 17 and a half. 17 and a half. That's
- 30:07Speaker 1: a three-score game. And that's the point spread with Clemson
- 30:10Speaker 1: at home. Yeah, and Miami wanting to make a point
- 30:12Speaker 1: on national TV. I mean, this is a rare Saturday
- 30:15Speaker 1: game for Miami. I mean, it's 11 a.m. It's on ABC.
- 30:17Speaker 1: But Alabama and Mississippi State is starting to look like
- 30:19Speaker 1: the biggest game in the country. The SEC didn't do
- 30:21Speaker 1: the scheduling the way they do now. And we've been
- 30:23Speaker 1: asked about this in the chat room. When did this start?
- 30:25Speaker 1: It's only a couple of years old that they've been
- 30:26Speaker 1: doing this. It started last year. Yeah, last season. And
- 30:29Speaker 1: where they basically announce a time window for every single
- 30:32Speaker 1: game before the season starts. Had they not done that,
- 30:36Speaker 1: Had they done it the way they used to, this
- 30:37Speaker 1: would be your primetime ABC game. It would be, and
- 30:39Speaker 1: how much fun would that be? It would be a blast. Now,
- 30:41Speaker 1: Bama's catching a break.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Now, going into the season, I would have said your
- 30:45Speaker 2: bigger games would be Miami and Clemson, Washington, USC.
- 30:49Speaker 3: I mean.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I mean, Washington, USC on NBC, a lot of people
- 30:56Speaker 1: thought would be almost for a playoff spot. In the preseason,
- 30:59Speaker 1: we would have said, hey, sneaky good Louisville, NC State.
- 31:02Speaker 1: We thought NC State would be better than they've been.
- 31:04Speaker 2: But now Louisville's taken on a loss, and NC State's
- 31:06Speaker 2: got multiple losses.
- 31:09Speaker 1: 630 on Fox, we thought going into the season, if
- 31:11Speaker 1: Deion had Colorado just decent, Texas Tech Colorado could have implications.
- 31:15Speaker 1: There's a chance for Texas Tech to lose.
- 31:16Speaker 2: I'll tell you, the Alabama-Mississippi State game becomes bigger if
- 31:19Speaker 2: State wins this game.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Oh, that's exactly right. That's exactly right. Cut one, Tyler.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Here is Kalen DeBoer on what he's heard about playing
- 31:27Speaker 1: in Starkville, cowbells and all of that. This is the
- 31:30Speaker 1: Alabama coach. He's yet to go to Starkville, 85 miles
- 31:33Speaker 1: from football stadium to football stadium.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Just personally, this is one of those stadiums I haven't
- 31:38Speaker 5: been in, played in, you know, no matter where I've been.
- 31:41Speaker 5: And so just, you know, what I hear and from
- 31:45Speaker 5: the people that I trust, it's going to be an
- 31:48Speaker 5: absolute crazy environment.
- 31:50Speaker 1: And, uh, we're going to be prepared for that.
- 31:51Speaker 5: We talked about it as a team this morning and, uh,
- 31:54Speaker 5: you know, we're looking for that challenge that we got
- 31:56Speaker 5: to improve on the, the, the way we started, uh,
- 31:59Speaker 5: the last road game. I think we've made a lot
- 32:01Speaker 5: of strides in that way and we've, we've learned and
- 32:03Speaker 5: grown since then. And so, um, you know, the week
- 32:07Speaker 5: of preparation and us being our best, uh, is, is
- 32:10Speaker 5: going to be important for us to go out there and,
- 32:13Speaker 5: and do what we need to do, uh, to have
- 32:15Speaker 5: success on Saturday against Mississippi state, who, Again, playing really
- 32:19Speaker 5: good football.
- 32:20Speaker 1: So they are going to bus a day of game
- 32:24Speaker 1: to the stadium 85 miles away. Now, they were talking
- 32:28Speaker 1: about this on the morning show on SiriusXM. A lot
- 32:31Speaker 1: of people were talking about it yesterday. These teams rarely
- 32:37Speaker 1: stay in the cities. For Alabama, sometimes in Starkville, they
- 32:41Speaker 1: have a hotel they stay at in Starkville. Oh, really?
- 32:44Speaker 1: Mississippi State, there's only one hotel in Starkville. That is
- 32:47Speaker 1: big enough to host Alabama's traveling party. I'm surprised they
- 32:52Speaker 1: actually stay in Starkville. I would assume Columbus or somewhere
- 32:54Speaker 1: like that. Mississippi State is now staying at that hotel
- 32:56Speaker 1: that in the past has hosted Alabama. Okay. So there's
- 33:00Speaker 1: not another hotel that can accommodate in Starkville Alabama's traveling party. Well,
- 33:05Speaker 1: that was a savvy move by Levy. I mean, that
- 33:07Speaker 1: probably was something that played into that because now every
- 33:09Speaker 1: opponent's got to find something else. Tupelo.
- 33:12Speaker 5: Tupelo.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Or Columbus is your closest big enough hotel to stay.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Our buddy Brad, who's a big Mississippi State, Alabama guy,
- 33:19Speaker 2: but goes to a ton of games over there, said
- 33:21Speaker 2: Tupelo is kind of the go-to for people.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Tupelo is where Alabama would stay, right? It's where LSU stays,
- 33:27Speaker 1: where a lot of teams stay. What is that, from
- 33:29Speaker 1: Tupelo to Starkville? 45 minutes, I think. 45 minutes, about
- 33:32Speaker 1: 60 miles. Yeah. So Tupelo to Starkville is 45 minutes.
- 33:35Speaker 2: But to let you know, you know, my— ex-wife Bethany
- 33:37Speaker 2: used to work at the Marriott on Highway 280 way
- 33:39Speaker 2: back in the day, and all of the visiting teams
- 33:42Speaker 2: to Bryant-Denny would stay there.
- 33:44Speaker 1: That's right. About 55 miles. About the same distance. And
- 33:48Speaker 1: with police escorts, you're working your way down to 80.
- 33:51Speaker 1: People are making a big deal about this. It's 85 miles.
- 33:55Speaker 1: It's police escort. It's game day.
- 33:56Speaker 2: You get to sleep in your own beds. I just
- 34:00Speaker 2: don't think it's that big a deal for this game.
- 34:01Speaker 2: I don't think it's a big deal, but here's when
- 34:02Speaker 2: it becomes a big deal. If Alabama loses, people like
- 34:05Speaker 2: to point at everything. It becomes Sean McVay in Australia. Yeah,
- 34:09Speaker 2: like he did this wrong. Why would you break routine?
- 34:12Speaker 2: I give Kalen DeBoer a lot of credit because he's
- 34:14Speaker 2: not worried about the public opinion because I probably would
- 34:18Speaker 2: be like, let's just keep proper routine.
- 34:20Speaker 1: I think Nick Saban did this at least once. We
- 34:24Speaker 1: don't play Mississippi State at Alabama every year anymore, but
- 34:27Speaker 1: I think Saban did that At least one time.
- 34:31Speaker 2: I mean, the kick time's got to have something to
- 34:33Speaker 2: do with it, too, right?
- 34:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to ask. Do you think if
- 34:35Speaker 1: it were 2.30 or night, you would do it differently?
- 34:36Speaker 1: I think they would have stayed overnight. I don't know
- 34:39Speaker 1: why I think that. Because of meeting rooms and routine meals?
- 34:42Speaker 1: Because it's an hour. I mean, I just did it
- 34:45Speaker 1: on Apple Maps, and I've got it at an hour
- 34:47Speaker 1: and 29 minutes. And that's without a police escort. That's
- 34:50Speaker 1: without a police escort. So let's say $ 1.
- 34:52Speaker 7: 15.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Yeah. If you've ever tried to keep up with a
- 34:55Speaker 1: police escort, which I have, actually coming out of Starkville,
- 34:57Speaker 1: I was allowed to jump into police escort one time.
- 35:01Speaker 1: And you've got to lay on the gas. You've got
- 35:04Speaker 1: to lay on the gas. They don't slow down. We're
- 35:06Speaker 1: not going 70.
- 35:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 35:10Speaker 1: It's closer to 80. So $ 1. 15 instead of $ 45 is
- 35:13Speaker 1: what we're looking at. So you may have added a
- 35:14Speaker 1: half hour to the drive. But I was going to
- 35:16Speaker 1: back it out. So Bama would arrive at the stadium
- 35:18Speaker 1: around 9? Usually 2 to 2.5 hours before. So 8.30.
- 35:24Speaker 1: So you're leaving Tuscaloosa at 7 a.m.? Yep. Buses roll
- 35:28Speaker 1: probably at 7 a.m. out of Tuscaloosa, I would think.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Maybe 7.45. 7.45. So you probably team breakfast at 6.30.
- 35:35Speaker 1: I mean, that is an early start.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you would probably have that start for an 11
- 35:39Speaker 2: o'clock anyway.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Yeah. You're going to start early. There's no doubt.
- 35:42Speaker 4: You're up early.
- 35:42Speaker 1: This is why coaches like early road games because you
- 35:46Speaker 1: don't have to fill the whole day. You've got a schedule.
- 35:48Speaker 1: You've got to hit and go.
- 35:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:50Speaker 1: They hate sitting around the hotel for a late game. See,
- 35:53Speaker 1: I think this is an advantage, Alabama, that it's 11 o'clock. Yeah.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Just the atmosphere in the stadium. Zach says, as he
- 35:59Speaker 1: remembers it, the game Tua broke his hip, so that
- 36:01Speaker 1: would have been 2018. That was the last time. It
- 36:03Speaker 1: was an 11 a.m. game, and I do believe Alabama
- 36:05Speaker 1: drove day off. He said it was early, and they
- 36:06Speaker 1: drove day off the day Tua broke his hip. So
- 36:09Speaker 1: that was 2018. And that's why he broke his hip,
- 36:11Speaker 1: because they drove day off. He broke his hip.
- 36:13Speaker 2: I mean.
- 36:14Speaker 1: The inconvenient truth is he broke his hip because he
- 36:16Speaker 1: wouldn't give up on a play. And Saban wouldn't take
- 36:19Speaker 1: him out of the game. Nick Saban believed in playing
- 36:20Speaker 1: his starters in the third quarter, but that's aside the point.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I agree with you.
- 36:24Speaker 2: I think if this game is 2-30 or 6, I
- 36:26Speaker 2: said weeks ago that I just had a feeling Mississippi
- 36:28Speaker 2: State's going to win this game.
- 36:29Speaker 1: I think it's going to be a really good game.
- 36:31Speaker 2: I would feel much better about State if it was
- 36:33Speaker 2: later just to get that crowd lubed up. There's just
- 36:38Speaker 2: something different about those home games, those home 11 o'clock games.
- 36:41Speaker 2: You can try to have the buzz like Tennessee. I
- 36:44Speaker 2: was texting back and forth with a buddy that was
- 36:46Speaker 2: up in Neyland last week, and I was like, how's
- 36:48Speaker 2: the atmosphere?
- 36:48Speaker 1: And he's like, it's good, it's just too damn early.
- 36:50Speaker 1: It's good, but it's not great. It's just too damn early.
- 36:53Speaker 1: That was as big a game as you could have
- 36:54Speaker 1: in Neyland. That's the number one team in the country.
- 36:56Speaker 1: That's right. Yeah, it can't get any bigger this weekend.
- 36:58Speaker 1: That's right. So it's going to be juiced. I'm not
- 37:00Speaker 1: saying that, but it is absolutely an advantage for the
- 37:04Speaker 1: visiting team, 11 a.m. When am I allowed to talk
- 37:06Speaker 1: about weather? I was told yesterday that it's too early.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Give me a weather update, because... I've got an outdoor
- 37:13Speaker 1: broadcast Tuscaloosa County on Friday night. I think I was
- 37:17Speaker 1: texting my crew. I was like, hey. Uh, if I
- 37:19Speaker 1: remember this stadium, we're outside broadcast. What are we going
- 37:22Speaker 1: to do with the rain? It's supposed to be a monsoon. Oh,
- 37:24Speaker 1: it's supposed to rain. Oh, so Easter or Easter Saturday,
- 37:28Speaker 1: you've got a 91% chance of thunderstorms for Starkville. 11 AM. Uh, well,
- 37:33Speaker 1: I don't have times yet. I mean, you know, it's
- 37:35Speaker 1: probably a little too early to go hour by hour.
- 37:37Speaker 1: I could do that. Maybe Thursday for you. If you're
- 37:38Speaker 1: going to be a meteorologist, meteorologists are so spot on.
- 37:42Speaker 1: No 1103 is when it's going to start there. It's
- 37:44Speaker 1: got field. Um, But, I mean... It's an all-day rain event,
- 37:48Speaker 1: it looks like. It looks like. I mean, Saturday, October 3rd,
- 37:50Speaker 1: showers and thunderstorms, winds light variable, chance of rain 90%. Yeah,
- 37:54Speaker 1: wind and rain are the great equalizers. Rainfall near half
- 37:58Speaker 1: an inch at night, it says. Always about size with you. Alabama,
- 38:03Speaker 1: Mississippi State, 11... You.
- 38:04Speaker 4: Really had to peek at it.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Shut up. Yeah, Alabama, Mississippi State, 11 a.m. coming up. So,
- 38:09Speaker 1: we're about... I think it's next week. Brooks, check the
- 38:14Speaker 1: official release date on the Saban documentary. Six episodes, ESPN platform.
- 38:20Speaker 1: October 8th. So what is that? That's next week, right? Yes,
- 38:23Speaker 1: it is.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Next Thursday.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Are you all in on this documentary?
- 38:27Speaker 2: I wish it was off-season. I'm probably not all. I mean,
- 38:30Speaker 2: I'll watch it 100%. I saw a little bit of
- 38:32Speaker 2: the interview with Mike Greenberg this morning on Get Up.
- 38:36Speaker 2: I will definitely watch it. They're billing it as the
- 38:38Speaker 2: best since the last dance. The best produced product ESPN
- 38:43Speaker 2: has rolled out since the last dance. That's hard to tell.
- 38:46Speaker 2: So I will definitely watch it.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Here's why I'm all in. I saw Saban being interviewed.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I think it was with Rich Eisen yesterday. He says
- 38:56Speaker 1: that he didn't even know this was happening. That Alabama's
- 39:01Speaker 1: video team were archiving a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that
- 39:08Speaker 1: has never been released. When they realized that probably in
- 39:12Speaker 1: 2011 or 2012 that they've got one of the greatest
- 39:15Speaker 1: coaches of all time, they started archiving never-been-released stuff that
- 39:22Speaker 1: is going to be seen in this documentary. And Zabin
- 39:25Speaker 1: says one of them, I didn't even know we had
- 39:27Speaker 1: cameras in there, they've got video of him telling Tua
- 39:30Speaker 1: he's starting the second half of the national championship game.
- 39:33Speaker 1: They've got the audio and the video, and it'll be
- 39:35Speaker 1: in the documentary. I got chills. Jimmy Bama. I'm just saying.
- 39:42Speaker 1: So who gets paid on this thing?
- 39:43Speaker 2: Because what I was thinking is like Nostradamus gave him
- 39:46Speaker 2: a tip off. In 10 years, we're going to have NIL.
- 39:49Speaker 2: This will be a good way to hold a little
- 39:51Speaker 2: leverage over ESPN. I wonder how much Saban's getting. I
- 39:54Speaker 2: wonder how much Alabama's getting.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I imagine Saban's a producer in this, wouldn't you imagine?
- 39:58Speaker 1: It's got to be. I don't know about Alabama, but
- 40:00Speaker 1: it's their video.
- 40:02Speaker 2: But I heard him talking about that a little bit.
- 40:04Speaker 2: I didn't allow media access like people really wanted, but
- 40:09Speaker 2: we had people that were archiving everything the entire time.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that blows me away that I mean, in hindsight,
- 40:15Speaker 1: one of the biggest decisions, one of the biggest moments
- 40:17Speaker 1: of college football history. I mean, literally a halftime quarterback
- 40:20Speaker 1: change changed the national champion. There's zero chance they win
- 40:24Speaker 1: the championship with Jalen Hurts quarterbacking the second half. Zero chance. So,
- 40:27Speaker 1: I mean, a halftime change changed the eventual national champion.
- 40:31Speaker 1: And we are just now finding out that there was
- 40:33Speaker 1: video of that. It's crazy. But don't you, I mean,
- 40:36Speaker 1: I don't care who it is that's been a legendary coach,
- 40:38Speaker 1: you know, pick Woody Hayes or Bear Bryant or General
- 40:42Speaker 1: Nealon or just you run through all the greats. To
- 40:45Speaker 1: be able to have access to footage you've never seen
- 40:47Speaker 1: behind the scenes, there's meetings, there's locker room stuff that
- 40:51Speaker 1: you've never seen. I was very tepid on this whole thing.
- 40:56Speaker 1: I was like, eh, it's another Saban documentary. I saw
- 41:00Speaker 1: the football life on NFL Network, and it was very
- 41:02Speaker 1: interesting to me. But I was like, how much more
- 41:05Speaker 1: of this? What's it going to be that I don't
- 41:08Speaker 1: know already because I've covered it? I covered him for
- 41:10Speaker 1: 17 years. But when you give me access that I
- 41:13Speaker 1: didn't have inside the locker room, oh, let's go.
- 41:15Speaker 2: And they said one episode is like how he completely
- 41:19Speaker 2: changed philosophy and went to process once he was in
- 41:22Speaker 2: East Lansing.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Like it wasn't good enough. He was only about the wins,
- 41:25Speaker 2: and then he started it. What is the journey to
- 41:27Speaker 2: the wins? So they say that is like maybe the
- 41:30Speaker 2: most fascinating episode. So I'll definitely check it out.
- 41:32Speaker 1: I saw the piece, the part they included in game
- 41:34Speaker 1: day about his return to Baton Rouge that JP was
- 41:37Speaker 1: such a big part of. That's right.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:38Speaker 1: That was very well done. I watched that. I was like, OK,
- 41:40Speaker 1: if the whole thing's like that, this will be very good.
- 41:43Speaker 1: But see that one, I was like, OK, that was
- 41:45Speaker 1: well done. Yeah. But I sort of knew that. Yeah.
- 41:48Speaker 1: But I mean, you're going to give me the moment.
- 41:50Speaker 1: When he's telling Jalen, then Jalen, you're out too.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Oh, no, no, no.
- 41:53Speaker 1: I agree 100%. Oh, my goodness. But here's what jumped
- 41:55Speaker 1: out at me about the part about the return to LSU. First,
- 41:58Speaker 1: Julio Jones is in there. They got Julio to sit
- 42:02Speaker 1: down and do this. Kirby Smart is in there talking
- 42:04Speaker 1: about it. Kirby was like, we're all saying, don't sit
- 42:06Speaker 1: next to Nick on the bus. Don't walk next to Nick.
- 42:08Speaker 1: That's right, yeah. I mean, Kirby is on there. So
- 42:10Speaker 1: the people that sat down for this– It's pretty crazy.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Julio cries in his interview. Yeah. I mean, so it's
- 42:16Speaker 1: pretty crazy some of the people they got to sit
- 42:18Speaker 1: down for this, obviously. I'm all in.
- 42:20Speaker 8: The thing I was thinking about through all of this,
- 42:22Speaker 8: if you'll go back and remember, Monty Burke wrote a
- 42:24Speaker 8: biography book about Nick Saban. I don't know if you
- 42:27Speaker 8: guys remember Nick Saban getting pretty pissed off about the
- 42:31Speaker 8: fact that the book was kind of written without his consent,
- 42:34Speaker 8: without his input.
- 42:35Speaker 1: I do remember that now, yes.
- 42:37Speaker 8: And I'm sitting here thinking, you know, part of this–
- 42:40Speaker 8: biography is he is or this documentary is he being
- 42:44Speaker 8: able to tell this story the way he wants to
- 42:46Speaker 8: tell it and that's what he said in his take
- 42:49Speaker 8: at the time about this biography been being written about
- 42:52Speaker 8: him was when I'm ready to tell my story I'm
- 42:54Speaker 8: going to tell.
- 42:54Speaker 1: It that's why when the first credits roll it's going
- 42:56Speaker 1: to say executive producer Nick Saban yeah yeah I'm all
- 42:59Speaker 1: in I can't wait I'm like you guys I wish
- 43:02Speaker 1: it was June uh and not right now but I'm
- 43:05Speaker 1: all in I'll uh I'll dive in and enjoy it.
- 43:09Speaker 2: I know what they're trying to do. They're trying to
- 43:10Speaker 2: capitalize on football season. But for the football diehards, you're
- 43:15Speaker 2: going to get them more out of season. And I
- 43:17Speaker 2: think you would get more of the casual fan out
- 43:19Speaker 2: of season. Yeah.
- 43:21Speaker 1: It's being released the week of the Alabama-Georgia game. Georgia-Alabama
- 43:24Speaker 1: game in Tuscaloosa. Am I right about that? Next week? Yeah.
- 43:28Speaker 8: It's coming out on Thursday night. I don't know if
- 43:30Speaker 8: it's going to come. I think they're dripping it out, though, right?
- 43:32Speaker 8: That's only the first two episodes.
- 43:34Speaker 4: All six episodes dropped.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Next Thursday. Wow, okay. Yeah, so you'll get heavy promotion
- 43:39Speaker 1: on game day, probably in Tuscaloosa, and the big broadcast
- 43:45Speaker 1: on ABC at Saban Field, the Saban documentary. Do you
- 43:48Speaker 1: think even in Tuscaloosa, if Alabama loses this week? Oh, no, no.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Where else will they go? Not necessarily. I haven't looked ahead,
- 43:54Speaker 1: but if Alabama wins, Georgia wins. You've got two unbeaten teams.
- 43:58Speaker 1: I still think they're there either way.
- 44:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:01Speaker 7: I couldn't find if Saban was actually a producer on this,
- 44:05Speaker 7: but I have seen that this is from the same
- 44:08Speaker 7: production company that made The Last Dance, the Christopher Reeve
- 44:12Speaker 7: documentary that came out a few years back, as well
- 44:16Speaker 7: as the Dude Perfect documentary, if that is.
- 44:20Speaker 1: The same category. Well, you had me at The Last Dance.
- 44:22Speaker 1: You could have stopped right there.
- 44:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I probably should have.
- 44:24Speaker 1: All right, that's our viewing menu brought to you. Thank you, Tyler.
- 44:29Speaker 1: When we come back, we'll jump into some more college football.
- 44:33Speaker 1: The hunted. How do you handle being the hunted? Then
- 44:36Speaker 1: Jeff Collins talks some X's and O's with us on
- 44:39Speaker 1: the next round presented by Hard Rock Bet on Sporting State.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Before LT tells us about Clay Travis Law, we didn't
- 44:46Speaker 1: get to it yesterday, but it was a whiteout at
- 44:50Speaker 1: Penn State. And Forrester and I were very amused. This
- 44:53Speaker 1: was like a, I don't know, what commercial advertiser would
- 44:57Speaker 1: this fit for? In the middle of this whiteout forester,
- 45:01Speaker 1: there's this one little Wisconsin fan. Look at that, that
- 45:05Speaker 1: red dot sticking out. That'll be a meme at some point.
- 45:10Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of the perfect advertiser for that.
- 45:12Speaker 1: The old Snicker. No, the old Southwest. You want to
- 45:14Speaker 1: get away.
- 45:14Speaker 2: That is Where's Waldo, right?
- 45:15Speaker 1: That is. But you remember the Southwest Airlines? You want
- 45:17Speaker 1: to get away?
- 45:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:18Speaker 1: That's probably it. You want to get away. He wants
- 45:20Speaker 1: to stay after the comeback. Oh, yeah.
- 45:22Speaker 4: If I'm this guy, I'm framing that somewhere in my house.
- 45:25Speaker 1: It's a framer. Yep. It almost looks like it's AI, honestly.
- 45:28Speaker 1: That is such a bright red shirt. Dad, how long
- 45:31Speaker 1: have you been a Wisconsin fan? Let me show you
- 45:33Speaker 1: how long I've been a Wisconsin fan. Yeah, and is
- 45:35Speaker 1: nobody talking to him? It looks like he's standing in
- 45:38Speaker 1: the aisle, like he doesn't even have a seat. Yeah,
- 45:40Speaker 1: it might be AI. Well, it's not AI. You know
- 45:42Speaker 1: what I think it is? What? I think he told
- 45:45Speaker 1: his buddies, I'm going to walk over into that section,
- 45:47Speaker 1: shoot me, because he doesn't have a seat, right?
- 45:49Speaker 4: He's standing.
- 45:49Speaker 1: I'll go stand there and y'all video it real quick.
- 45:51Speaker 1: That's me being cynical again. Everything I see now, I
- 45:54Speaker 1: think it's set up for video.
- 45:55Speaker 4: I don't think that's cynical. I think that's what happened.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that's legitimate.
- 45:58Speaker 4: He's standing in the aisle.
- 45:59Speaker 1: It just now dawned on me he doesn't have a seat.
- 46:01Speaker 2: You know what the unemployed person is called now?
- 46:04Speaker 1: It's called an influencer, Donald. Everybody's doing it. It used
- 46:07Speaker 1: to be a... Used to be a musician or a poet.
- 46:10Speaker 1: I mean, it worked.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Good for them. Tell us about our- Brooks is right.
- 46:14Speaker 4: The other version of that is entrepreneur.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 46:18Speaker 4: Got a startup.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Our buddy Clay Travis started as an entrepreneur, and he's
- 46:22Speaker 1: turned it into Clay Travis.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Law and a lot of other things. Yeah, look, one
- 46:25Speaker 2: bad moment, things change. Wreck a fall doctor who wasn't
- 46:28Speaker 2: paying attention. Suddenly, you're fighting an insurance company that does
- 46:30Speaker 2: it every single day. That's why Clay started Clay Travis Law.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Built a firm around one idea. People deserve someone willing
- 46:36Speaker 2: to pay attention. Ask those hard questions. and push back
- 46:39Speaker 2: when things don't add up. Experienced trial attorneys who bring
- 46:42Speaker 2: the fight to corporations and insurers based in Nashville, trusted
- 46:45Speaker 2: across the country, car, truck wrecks, ride share accidents, medical malpractice.
- 46:50Speaker 2: If you were wrong, they want to hear about it.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Here's what they're going to promise you.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Honesty.
- 46:54Speaker 2: They're not going to sugarcoat the case. You're going to
- 46:56Speaker 2: hear what it's actually worth, not what you want to hear.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Case evaluation is free. No charge, no pressure, no hassle.
- 47:01Speaker 2: Just tell them your story. Go to claytravislaw.com. Call 877-222-4444.
- 47:05Speaker 2: That's claytravislaw.com. No case too big or too small.
- 47:11Speaker 1: After Jeff Collins in our next segment after this one,
- 47:14Speaker 1: we'll do upset alerts. So if talking about any of
- 47:16Speaker 1: these teams, infringe on your upset alert. Please hold your
- 47:21Speaker 1: cards tight. Close to your vest. And don't let it out.
- 47:24Speaker 3: Okay.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Don't let it out. I've got six teams that are
- 47:28Speaker 1: the hunted now, in my opinion. Herbstreit brought this up
- 47:32Speaker 1: about Florida. Herbstreit was like, can Florida handle being the
- 47:39Speaker 1: hunted now? Here's John Summerall. After the game on Saturday,
- 47:44Speaker 1: still full of piss and vinegar, man. I love this
- 47:47Speaker 1: comment from the Florida head coach. Yeah. Coach, you talked
- 47:51Speaker 1: about awaking in the beast and why you're not a
- 47:54Speaker 1: finished product. Do you feel like it's at least stirring
- 47:57Speaker 1: a little bit at this point?
- 47:58Speaker 6: It's not sleep, but it ain't fully awake yet. You know,
- 48:01Speaker 6: like it's, it's, it's being kind of stirred up a
- 48:04Speaker 6: little bit. So we're, we're going to get there, but yeah, it's,
- 48:07Speaker 6: it's coming. Like I promised, I didn't come here for
- 48:09Speaker 6: us to be average and we're going to work tire,
- 48:12Speaker 6: tirelessly coaches, players, everybody to put a product on the field.
- 48:16Speaker 6: We can all be proud of. And you know, I,
- 48:19Speaker 6: we had, I will say this. We had some recruits
- 48:22Speaker 6: here this weekend. I mean, the recruiting list that we
- 48:26Speaker 6: get a lot of those guys to say, yes, we're
- 48:29Speaker 6: going to wake the B-step real fast. So we're going
- 48:32Speaker 6: to wake it up right now with the guys we got.
- 48:33Speaker 6: I love the guys we got, but we still have
- 48:36Speaker 6: to reinforce our roster, the depth of our roster, and
- 48:40Speaker 6: to look like maybe the top, top, top teams in
- 48:42Speaker 6: the country. We still aren't maybe just depth where we
- 48:46Speaker 6: can roll out the next guy, and it's like there's
- 48:49Speaker 6: very little drop-off.
- 48:51Speaker 1: They're building something at Florida. Florida is one of those teams.
- 48:54Speaker 1: I've got six. I'll run through them. Talk about them
- 48:57Speaker 1: handling being the hunted. It is different now for John
- 49:00Speaker 1: Summerall in Florida. Where are they? They're up to number
- 49:02Speaker 1: eight in the country in the polls, if you put
- 49:05Speaker 1: any value in that. And all of a sudden, they're
- 49:07Speaker 1: the talk of college football. Well, they are. Here they come.
- 49:09Speaker 2: But I still think they were a big talking point
- 49:11Speaker 2: last week because a lot of people were scratching their heads.
- 49:13Speaker 2: How is Florida three and a half point favorite, which
- 49:16Speaker 2: got up to four over this Ole Miss team that's
- 49:19Speaker 2: got the best resume in all of college football? So
- 49:21Speaker 2: I think that did benefit that Florida team last week
- 49:24Speaker 2: because you saw early on is efficient as that offense
- 49:27Speaker 2: has been. Aaron Philo missed some pretty easy throws. But
- 49:30Speaker 2: the great news is you've got two really good running
- 49:32Speaker 2: backs that he can settle down with. And I thought
- 49:35Speaker 2: their defense overall, look, I know it was still a
- 49:38Speaker 2: pretty big number. But to hold Trinidad Chambliss to that,
- 49:41Speaker 2: there was improvement with that defense.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I would agree. I mean, that's been his concern.
- 49:45Speaker 1: He voiced concern after Florida Atlantic. He voiced concern after
- 49:49Speaker 1: the Auburn game. He voiced concern, you know, Campbell was
- 49:51Speaker 1: kind of a throwaway game. But I do think that's
- 49:53Speaker 1: probably the best their defense has played in a real
- 49:56Speaker 1: game was Saturday. I mean, look, I love everything the
- 50:01Speaker 1: guy says. We love John Summerall on this show. We
- 50:02Speaker 1: don't make any apologies about it. And I love the
- 50:04Speaker 1: fact that he says, we did not come here to
- 50:06Speaker 1: be average. We're going to be great. I love that attitude.
- 50:10Speaker 1: But every step of the way, he's tried to tamp
- 50:12Speaker 1: down expectations. When everybody went nuts after Florida Atlantic, he's like,
- 50:16Speaker 1: we got a long way to go. Like, I know
- 50:18Speaker 1: this looked nice and everybody got excited. Our defense is
- 50:21Speaker 1: a long way off after the Auburn game. He tried
- 50:25Speaker 1: to tamp down expectations. That's going to become increasingly difficult because,
- 50:28Speaker 1: as you pointed, now they're in the top 10. They're
- 50:30Speaker 1: a top 10 team now, and they're sneaking up on nobody.
- 50:33Speaker 1: They are the hunted now. A little bit for BYU now.
- 50:37Speaker 1: BYU number 10 in the AP poll, and all of
- 50:40Speaker 1: a sudden, more people are talking about BYU than they're
- 50:44Speaker 1: talking about Utah, and then they're talking about Texas Tech.
- 50:47Speaker 1: That's a little bit of a flip. of the national conversation. Well,
- 50:51Speaker 1: a couple of things.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Texas Tech hasn't looked good. The eye test, they haven't
- 50:54Speaker 2: passed it yet. They haven't lost a game, but they
- 50:56Speaker 2: still haven't looked great. And BYU, give Kalani Satake a
- 51:00Speaker 2: lot of credit. I know there were people out there
- 51:02Speaker 2: talking about Duke. I know it got brought up on
- 51:04Speaker 2: the show last week. We talked about it a little
- 51:06Speaker 2: bit yesterday. Your defending ACC champion is sitting there at 4-0,
- 51:09Speaker 2: and nobody's talking about Duke. BYU's won 17 of the
- 51:12Speaker 2: last 19 games.
- 51:13Speaker 1: How about that? And both those losses to Texas Tech.
- 51:17Speaker 8: Is that right?
- 51:19Speaker 1: Yes. I think so. Both losses to Texas Tech.
- 51:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 51:21Speaker 1: It's just the team nobody ever talks about. Nobody.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Nobody talks about the Big 12.
- 51:26Speaker 1: But here comes BYU. They're now on the national radar.
- 51:30Speaker 1: I want to see what happens to Oklahoma State now
- 51:34Speaker 1: in that same conference because everybody's talking Oklahoma State now
- 51:38Speaker 1: too and They still lost to Tulsa. Yeah, I know
- 51:40Speaker 1: we talked about them a little bit. I started seeing
- 51:43Speaker 1: people say, hey, this could be a sneaky good team.
- 51:44Speaker 1: This could be a sneaky good team. This could be
- 51:46Speaker 1: a sneaky good team. And then they lost to Tulsa.
- 51:47Speaker 1: And everybody's like, OK, I guess we misjudged that. But boom,
- 51:50Speaker 1: since then, it's been a different football team.
- 51:53Speaker 2: I can't believe with the way Arkansas handled Tulsa that
- 51:56Speaker 2: Oklahoma State lost that game and You know, I brought
- 51:58Speaker 2: it up a couple of times after that week that
- 52:01Speaker 2: Jacob Sexton, their left tackle they lost, kind of threw
- 52:04Speaker 2: everything out of rhythm. If you went back and played
- 52:06Speaker 2: that game, I believe they'd win it by 35-plus. I
- 52:09Speaker 2: know that sounds crazy.
- 52:10Speaker 1: No, no, no. It makes sense.
- 52:11Speaker 2: But, you know, here's going to be the problem for
- 52:12Speaker 2: Oak State. I wonder if they get all the way–
- 52:14Speaker 2: and this is very doable. When you start to look
- 52:17Speaker 2: at the schedule, I mean, they've got some difficult games
- 52:19Speaker 2: at Houston. They host Texas Tech. They've got to go
- 52:22Speaker 2: to Kansas State, to Arizona State, all winnable games– If
- 52:26Speaker 2: they were to win out 11-1, play for the Big
- 52:29Speaker 2: 12 championship, and lose that game, that Tulsa loss week one.
- 52:33Speaker 2: If the committee's smart, you look back and you're like.
- 52:37Speaker 1: That was week one. Week one, new coach. Everything.
- 52:41Speaker 2: But I don't think people would put that into account.
- 52:43Speaker 2: I think they'd probably be out.
- 52:44Speaker 1: They'd probably be out. Now, I did see Andy Staples
- 52:46Speaker 1: had them, Alabama hosting Oklahoma State. It was just weird
- 52:50Speaker 1: to see it. in his projected 12-team playoff coming out
- 52:53Speaker 1: of the weekend. I saw it Sunday, Andy Staples, Alabama
- 52:56Speaker 1: hosting Oak State.
- 52:57Speaker 2: Do you think an 11-2 Oak State that has lost
- 52:59Speaker 2: a Big 12 championship could possibly trump one of these
- 53:02Speaker 2: three lost teams we've talked about?
- 53:04Speaker 1: That Tulsa loss is going to be a weight. That's
- 53:07Speaker 1: going to be a weight.
- 53:07Speaker 2: But it is going to be interesting with Mestemaker. All
- 53:10Speaker 2: of a sudden, they've got Caleb Hawkins and Eric Morris.
- 53:13Speaker 2: They're the Big 12 team nobody wants to face right now.
- 53:15Speaker 2: They've got names that people are talking about, so there
- 53:17Speaker 2: is a buzzer on this program. I'll tell you where
- 53:19Speaker 2: it would really help. if Oregon somehow can find their
- 53:23Speaker 2: way back into the national picture.
- 53:24Speaker 1: That's right. That's going to be the feather in the
- 53:26Speaker 1: cap that they have. One other, you can put Mississippi
- 53:30Speaker 1: State wherever you want to be. Everybody's talking about them.
- 53:32Speaker 1: They've got to handle that pressure this week. Kentucky, they're
- 53:36Speaker 1: ranked now. They've got to handle the pressure. But you
- 53:38Speaker 1: guys have talked about them on Friday. You talked about
- 53:41Speaker 1: them Monday. You talked about them today already. all of
- 53:45Speaker 1: a sudden UCLA is getting a little bit of a
- 53:48Speaker 1: target on their back.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Well, I thought it was going to be last week
- 53:52Speaker 2: against Maryland. I just felt like, you know, it's a
- 53:54Speaker 2: really good story, but they've beaten Cal, San Diego State,
- 53:56Speaker 2: and Purdue.
- 53:57Speaker 1: It was only 54-3.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Yeah, now they're flying all the way 2,000 miles to
- 54:01Speaker 2: College Park, and this is going to be a game
- 54:03Speaker 2: they lose. They've got a breather this week, and then
- 54:05Speaker 2: they go to Oregon.
- 54:07Speaker 1: And they could get Oregon without Dante Moore. Now, I
- 54:09Speaker 1: don't know if Dylan Rayola can keep this up, Lance.
- 54:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. But after that, let's just even
- 54:14Speaker 2: say they lose that game and they're 4-1. They're hosting Wisconsin.
- 54:17Speaker 2: They're hosting Michigan State. They're hosting Nevada. They go to Minnesota.
- 54:19Speaker 2: They're hosting Illinois. They go to an offensively challenged Michigan,
- 54:23Speaker 2: and then they host USC. I'm not going to be
- 54:25Speaker 2: surprised at all if they win nine games this year.
- 54:28Speaker 1: There's a 10-2 in that schedule, by the way. And
- 54:30Speaker 1: the Big Ten will be searching for a fourth team.
- 54:33Speaker 1: By the time we get to the end, that could
- 54:35Speaker 1: be UCLA. We'll talk to Jeff Collins. Great breakdown about
- 54:38Speaker 1: Alabama and some other teams. We'll tell you where you
- 54:41Speaker 1: can get Jeff Collins' content when we come back on
- 54:44Speaker 1: the next round, presented by Hard Rock Bet here on
- 54:47Speaker 1: Sporting State.
