- 0:09Adam: Welcome to the Sea Hawkers podcast.
- 0:12I'm Adam Emmert.
- 0:13I'm joined by my good buddy today, Clinton Bonner.
- 0:16And we've got a super sweet show for you guys today.
- 0:19We're gonna talk a little run game.
- 0:20We're gonna talk a little running backs.
- 0:21But it's not just gonna be me and you, Clinton.
- 0:24You got together with our good buddy Eddie McMillan at CEC Sports Marketing, and
- 0:27you have a special guest for us today.
- 0:30Clinton: Yeah, a- and for all of us, the universal we, we got the man.
- 0:34We love this guy because every time he's on, it's not only energy, it's not
- 0:38only these nuggets of understanding the position, but he's a great frigging dude.
- 0:42It is, of course, Thomas Rawls coming back on.
- 0:45Adam, we have Jadarian Price, we have Jeremiyah Love.
- 0:49The battle of the rookies coming right up.
- 0:51There cannot be a better dude to talk about this with than
- 0:55Seahawks running back Thomas Rawls.
- 0:57Let's bring him to the stage.
- 0:58Here he is.
- 0:59Thomas, how are you, man?
- 1:00Hey, how
- 1:00Rawls: y'all doing today?
- 1:02Clinton: Yeah.
- 1:02He's got a…
- 1:02Wait, I need my football.
- 1:03Where's my football?
- 1:03He's got one.
- 1:04I like that.
- 1:04There you go.
- 1:04I be ready.
- 1:05Rawls: Got it ready.
- 1:06Clinton: Oh, man, who's on…
- 1:06You got some autographs on there?
- 1:07Who's on there?
- 1:08Rawls: Oh, man.
- 1:09This is- A lot of people… the one I have from all everybody back home
- 1:12Oh, nice… has signed this one.
- 1:13but yeah, I always keep this one-… while I'm still out
- 1:17in the community with the 12.
- 1:18So I get a chance to be approachable and touchable with them.
- 1:20I
- 1:20Clinton: love, I love it.
- 1:21I love it.
- 1:22I know everybody, loves it so much.
- 1:24And, so we're gonna go through some stuff today.
- 1:26We'll bring it up on screen, but we talked about it.
- 1:28Right.
- 1:28We got, we got this battle of these new rookie running backs that I think
- 1:32the NFL's kind of enamored with.
- 1:34And, you know, some Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the
- 1:37Year rookie candidates as well.
- 1:38And we got, we got an Arizona Cardinals team who looked good.
- 1:42Like, call it what it is.
- 1:44Like, you- Yeah… could say look competent, but look good.
- 1:46Put a smackdown on the Chargers.
- 1:47Of course, our Seahawks go to 1-0, getting the, the big victory versus
- 1:52the New England Patriots in, in the Super Bowl rematch as well.
- 1:55So we got lots to talk to you about.
- 1:57Thomas, we want to give you a little bit of time as well, but
- 2:00first we're gonna ask folks…
- 2:01We will give you some time, of course.
- 2:03But hey, if you like watching folks like Thomas Rawls, and of course, just
- 2:06some dudes hopefully that you wanna sit around a campfire with to have a beer
- 2:10or two or three, talk some Seahawks, hit the like, hit the subscribe
- 2:14drop comments when the show is over.
- 2:16Show us the love, because Thomas deserves it, and our Seahawks
- 2:19deserve it, so please do that.
- 2:20But Thomas, Eddie McMillan, our guy from CEC, the ex-Seahawk DB
- 2:25himself, Eddie has you busier, probably as busy as you've been since
- 2:30you were an NFL pro player, man.
- 2:32What do you got- Man… cooking in the PNW?
- 2:34Rawls: Man, and probably having a lot more fun, even after-
- 2:37being, even this, even though it's hard to say that.
- 2:40But I still get the chance to do it in a different light.
- 2:42Clinton: I love
- 2:43Rawls: it.
- 2:43I love it.
- 2:43But, but I'll be hosting all the away games at the Muckleshoot
- 2:46Casino, whenever the team is away.
- 2:49So this is the prime destination place to be, and, we, we have a ton of fun.
- 2:53We have, different live entertainment, Corona and Extra and Modelo.
- 2:58of course myself with meet and greets- different prizes, and for every away
- 3:03game we'll be giving away a, a recliner.
- 3:06Clinton: Ooh.
- 3:06Rawls: A seat, a seat recliner.
- 3:07So man, come out.
- 3:08We already had a slot, a, a slot machine tournament.
- 3:11Man, we having a, a blast the whole year.
- 3:15And not to mention, we also got a, a pajama party coming up.
- 3:19And that's, on the 27th.
- 3:21we got, we got, we got a lot more coming.
- 3:23Clinton: Yeah, so I got a c- a graphic for that too
- 3:24but before we get there, Adam-
- 3:26Adam: Yeah
- 3:26… Clinton: Rum- Rumble with the Rawls.
- 3:29How's that hit- Let's get ready to rumble.
- 3:32How does, how does that hit, how does that hit you?
- 3:32How does that hit you, Adam?
- 3:32Adam: Oh, it, if that doesn't get you fired up, I don't know what does.
- 3:35Come on, baby.
- 3:35And Thomas, we were talking a little bit before we popped on.
- 3:38You've done a little bit of this with Muckleshoot in the preseason.
- 3:40Sounds like it's been lit and off the hook.
- 3:42I may have to drive out there, Clinton, to Seattle to get that
- 3:45recliner since, my couch still has that bullet hole I put in it, so.
- 3:49yeah, it's time to replace that.
- 3:51Clinton: Yeah, Thomas.
- 3:51Adam unfortunately shot…
- 3:53He, you know, he did not shoot the sheriff, but he did shoot his couch, and
- 3:56Yeah… the co- everybody's okay.
- 3:57He deserved it.
- 3:58It was a, it was a misfire.
- 3:59Yeah, probably.
- 3:59And we got the other graphics on stage there too.
- 4:02So the, for the folks that are listening, what you're missing
- 4:04out on youtube.com/seahawkspodcast
- 4:07are these great graphics that, just showing that Rawls will be a- be out
- 4:10at Muckleshoot, again, every away game.
- 4:13and so the schedule is there, and he mentioned that pajama party.
- 4:17The pajama party for the Commanders game is cool because Pacific time
- 4:21they're gonna get going at 9:00 AM.
- 4:22So Adam, perfect y- perfect for you.
- 4:24Roll out of bed, don't even change.
- 4:26Roll out.
- 4:26Grab your coffee
- 4:28Rawls: and- Come to the Muckleshoot.
- 4:28Come see Rawls in his onesie.
- 4:29I got…
- 4:30I'm ready to go in my onesie.
- 4:33Oh
- 4:34Clinton: I love it.
- 4:35That's, that's me.
- 4:35I love it so much.
- 4:36Awesome.
- 4:36So, so that's a great time and great thing you're doing with Eddie and
- 4:39CEC, so keep that, keep that rocking.
- 4:41Yo, Eddie called me before.
- 4:42He said that, he was talking with you and Randall earlier, and he asked you
- 4:46guys who was the better Seahawks running back, and what, what was your answer
- 4:50when, when he posed that to you, Thomas?
- 4:51Rawls: Oh, my…
- 4:52Well, my eyes got big because I'm one of the younger guys, 'cause I
- 4:55knew how effective Randall was too.
- 4:57Yeah.
- 4:57But then he looked at me.
- 4:58He, he said, "Thomas."
- 5:00I said, "Hold on."
- 5:02Clinton: That's right.
- 5:02Rawls: Yeah.
- 5:03But man, me and Randall was one of those guys, where we played
- 5:08behind some great runners, and then when we had our opportunities
- 5:11we had made the best of them.
- 5:13Clinton: Mm.
- 5:13Rawls: So it's still kind of hard to tell, but even looking at his
- 5:16his opportunities and looking at Curt Warner, the guy before him, I'm kind of
- 5:19just grateful to have put on the jersey and be, and be a part of the Seahawk
- 5:23you know, organization and be able to, you know, play, pay, pay
- 5:28homage to the running back position.
- 5:29But I think "Too Hard" was one of…
- 5:31I think he was one of, one of them dogs too.
- 5:33He was definitely thor- thoroughbred to come off and do what he done.
- 5:37Clinton: 100%.
- 5:37I love it, and, you know, you're still very, very active in the, the
- 5:41Pacific Northwest and Seattle community.
- 5:43Mm-hmm.
- 5:44You're doing great things out there, and we're, we're very happy.
- 5:46And b- and by the way, this is not just one giant advertisement for Muckleshoot.
- 5:50Oh, please.
- 5:50We wanna give you the love and go, go see you there, but we got
- 5:53some football- We got it… some football to talk about too.
- 5:55So let's, let's get down to some business.
- 5:58So let's just dive right in.
- 6:00I'll do the first one here.
- 6:01All right.
- 6:02So J- you, you watched the first game like all of us.
- 6:04I mean, you're, you're still cheering.
- 6:05You're a fan of this team, this organization.
- 6:08Jadarian Price goes out, 10 carries, 52 yards.
- 6:12Wha- so you're watching that for the first time because obviously- First
- 6:15time… didn't, didn't do too, too much in the, in the, in the preseason there.
- 6:18What are your first impressions of Price as an NFL running back?
- 6:22Rawls: Well, when you think about it, his first game, right, in the preseason
- 6:26so we didn't get a chance to see him, but it still doesn't mean he wasn't putting
- 6:30in the work and, and being prepared.
- 6:32In my mind, I always wonder what type of runner he, truly was because
- 6:36even though he's not playing in the preseason, once the regular season
- 6:38starts, how would he approach it?
- 6:40So what happened was with the opportunity that was given, he showed
- 6:44great vision, great consistency.
- 6:47He did great, with his shoulders being square.
- 6:50and then I wanted to see when he was running i- if he could trust
- 6:54everything that he really felt and seen.
- 6:56And that's exactly what he did.
- 6:58And, you know, we, we got a chance to, to see him take advantage and move
- 7:03the chains forward, and I can only imagine what the second, his second
- 7:07NFL game's gonna be, and definitely against the Arizona Cardinals.
- 7:11I think he got a high trajectory this week.
- 7:13I truly do.
- 7:14Adam: Like that.
- 7:15Yeah, great to hear that.
- 7:17And, you know, within his performance there in week one, looking at the
- 7:21offensive line and how they blocked for him- Yeah… and the scheme
- 7:24that Fleury put out, looks like we're still kind of living in that zone
- 7:28scheme type of running situation.
- 7:30Mm-hmm.
- 7:30How do you think the offensive line performed for him this week, and
- 7:33how does Jadarian fit in with that?
- 7:35Rawls: Well, Adam, I got your back on this one.
- 7:37I think he, I think what we wanted to do on the first game was just kinda
- 7:42see if we, if, if we can be consistent runners, be at the right places, be in
- 7:46the right spots, move the chains forward, not fumble the ball, take, take care of
- 7:50the ball, hit the ground, get back up.
- 7:53All of those small things just to get acclimated to the game, right?
- 7:56Because he showed great deal of, vision, his explosiveness, being
- 8:01able to cut back and, and, and able to play with the linemen a- and
- 8:04and the linemen catch their flow.
- 8:06That is a action shot for the linemen, okay?
- 8:09So the linemen is getting better with that.
- 8:12That makes them better, you know?
- 8:14Nobody can teach you to go into your NFL and teach you the speed of this game.
- 8:18He was on it, you know?
- 8:19And then, shout out to the offensive coordinator, too, w- with, with our
- 8:23Fleury offense because- Mm-hmm… I was wondering, I was kinda raising a iron
- 8:26question when I was watching the game.
- 8:28I said, "Hey, why you keep giving him these tosses?"
- 8:30But then when I start to see how he wanted to kinda open up the running
- 8:33lanes to kinda give him space, but to see if he could still make the outside
- 8:37reads and s- you know, still, still grind out and plow through
- 8:40those yards, they did a great job.
- 8:43You know, seeing Abe Lucas running his feet, running and getting them fired up.
- 8:46I look at the small things, you know?
- 8:48A- and that's what's gonna help, the quarterback situation.
- 8:52Give Drew, give, Drew Lock and, Sam, a- and Sam whenever he come
- 8:56back, give them more confidence, more technique and more feel
- 9:01to the game to get their, targets off th- through their progression.
- 9:05And that's what I think he did a great job of the first game.
- 9:08Great technique, his, his footwork, his…
- 9:11He had great tempo.
- 9:13He had a great amount of patience.
- 9:14But I'ma tell you one thing, when he seen it, he hit it.
- 9:16He was very decisive, and that's what you need to be a great runner in this league.
- 9:21You know, and, he don't know yet personally yet, but mid to late
- 9:26season, the league get ran down.
- 9:28That is wh- he, he, that's what's, what, he's being prepared for too, you know?
- 9:32So, I think he don't know that yet, but the hunger of the game and him
- 9:36being prepared is gonna show through his, his game each and every week
- 9:41Adam: So you mentioned the decisiveness that Jadarian ran with.
- 9:44Yeah.
- 9:44How difficult is it as a rookie to come in in your first game, no pre-season action-
- 9:49Rawls: Man
- 9:49Adam: and have that kind of decisiveness when you
- 9:52haven't seen the speed?
- 9:53Like you said- Yeah… nobody can simulate it for you, right?
- 9:55Rawls: Nobody can simulate it.
- 9:57So he was on it, but you wanna know what?
- 9:58I'm, I'm pretty sure, if you go back to the practice facility and all
- 10:03of those, times in the pre-season, I'm pretty sure he practiced like that.
- 10:07I, I, I bet.
- 10:08A- a- and so you, sometimes as great runners, it's hard for us to, I won't
- 10:12say be on schedule because we buy into the process, because I was one of those
- 10:16runners personally where, you know, even doing walkthroughs, I'm running.
- 10:20Clinton: Mm-hmm.
- 10:21Rawls: I gotta make it feel.
- 10:22I gotta be able to see it because I can't, I can't leave anything to chance.
- 10:25And I bet he's just a, a, a, a, a smart guy, a grinder, but at
- 10:29the same time he giving himself a chance and be- he's a coachable kid.
- 10:34And I can tell you he is because how consistent he was
- 10:36when he was getting the ball.
- 10:38Mm-hmm.
- 10:38'Cause I knew, i- yeah.
- 10:40A- and, and then, and then, you know, putting him out in space is
- 10:44gonna allow, the cut back lanes whenever we do run inside zones, more
- 10:48more power plays and all of those.
- 10:50He'll be more comfortable there.
- 10:51But first we have to see if we can kind of, you know, get him out
- 10:54in space, try to get him out in the open field, and it'll come.
- 10:58So he did a great job.
- 10:59This is his first game.
- 11:00He didn't play in the pre-season.
- 11:01he d- he, he made it out of the game, you know.
- 11:04So I think he did great, as far as finishing his runs, falling forward-
- 11:08Adam: Mm-hmm
- 11:09Rawls: which is truly important to being a runner, a runner in this
- 11:11league, protecting the ball going down.
- 11:14You know, s- these things, build trust, not just within
- 11:18your coaches, but your team.
- 11:19Because sometimes the big plays aren't always there, but it still can mean we
- 11:23can't be successful and win the game.
- 11:25Clinton: Yeah.
- 11:25Lo- that's awesome stuff.
- 11:26And I'd love to ask you, but you mentioned Drew Lock coming in.
- 11:29Obviously Sam Darnold goes down play five and, and, you know, the stadium gets quiet
- 11:33and like, "What's going on with Sam?"
- 11:35Now when you were, you know, strapping, strapping up for the Seahawks
- 11:39Russell Wilson was every single snap.
- 11:41Like I don't think I, I…
- 11:42You know, when you're playing I don't think Russell Wilson missed anything
- 11:45in the, the time- Yeah… you were with the Seahawks running the football.
- 11:47Rawls: Yeah.
- 11:47Clinton: But I'm sure throughout your, your career there's been times where
- 11:50the backup quarterback had to come in.
- 11:52What's a backup QB…
- 11:54I know, I know the room loves Drew.
- 11:56Everybody seems to really like Drew.
- 11:58What, what does the QB gotta do, a backup QB gotta do in a situation like that to
- 12:03get the team-… kind of re- mentally re-ready to be like, "Hey, we're good.
- 12:08We're good here"?
- 12:09What's, what's some things you look for from a backup QB to keep things steady?
- 12:13Rawls: come in and be himself a- a- a- and stay true to the process
- 12:18that was already in motion, because that's what make us great and a great
- 12:22team, and that's why he's there.
- 12:23Mm-hmm.
- 12:23And that's exactly why when he came in, he did the right things You
- 12:27know, he had a play where I think it was kinda, may could've been
- 12:29the third or fourth down, I'm sorry.
- 12:31But it wa- it, it kinda looked like a roll left.
- 12:34Remember the play where he threw it kinda, to Jaxon Smith-Njigba on the touchdown?
- 12:37Clinton: Yeah, for sure.
- 12:37That's fourth down.
- 12:38Yeah, fourth and one.
- 12:39Rawls: Just, just great, great read off the…
- 12:41You know, just, you know, just staying true to his, his reads and his targets no
- 12:46matter he's, if it's a, a, a big play or a short play, but I think the run game is
- 12:51definitely gonna be huge with him moving forward and being consistent in that.
- 12:55Mm-hmm.
- 12:55And I think he's gonna be, be more confident within that.
- 12:58But other than that, I think he got all the great pieces around him, and that's
- 13:02gonna make him, even more successful.
- 13:04And I think the confidence is also gonna come from the defense.
- 13:07You know, that, that, that, that's, that's a huge piece that, a huge component
- 13:10people don't talk about because I know we focus, the focal is on the offense.
- 13:14But when we talk about a team, you know, we feed off of each other, and
- 13:17so he, you know, special teams, we got, we got, we got everything, w-
- 13:22we got guys coming off the bench and, and, you know, showing up and
- 13:25and, and feeling like they're a part of something and being built, that's
- 13:28being built, you know, moving forward.
- 13:30So I think, with all of those pieces together and Drew at quarterback
- 13:35I don't think he's out of whack.
- 13:36I think actually- Mm-hmm… he'll rise to the occasion with no, with no problem.
- 13:40Clinton: Cool.
- 13:41Adam: That's, that's super sweet.
- 13:42Like, let's look a little bit more at the Cardinals game coming up here.
- 13:46Mm.
- 13:46And Jeremiyah Love, right?
- 13:47We've got them here.
- 13:48We're going down to the Dirty Desert to play them.
- 13:51Dirty Desert.
- 13:51And, yeah, man.
- 13:53And, obviously Price, Love, same school, Notre Dame.
- 13:57Two first rounders in, from the same school at the same position.
- 14:01That's truly unique.
- 14:03So when you saw Love's debut this last week, what stood out to you?
- 14:08Rawls: I think some- you know, he's one of those players that
- 14:11whenever he get the ball, he can be very, very explosive in whatever fashion.
- 14:16And that, you know, that is a great thing, but sometimes it
- 14:18can come back and haunt you.
- 14:20But he is one, a, a great pass catcher out of the backfield.
- 14:22I can give him that.
- 14:23He's a great receiving, route runner, too, and they're
- 14:26giving him opportunities.
- 14:28But, even on his touchdown, he, he had an amazing run, but I still
- 14:32kind of question it, you know, as the workload continue, you know, over the
- 14:35years because as you slow down that film, that hole was right there, you
- 14:39know, and that B-gap right there, he could've just walked through.
- 14:42But I know as a, running back, I've been there, too.
- 14:44I'm not criticizing him, but I understand some of the great runners
- 14:47"Hey, we gonna get this ball in the end zone," but it was there.
- 14:50But I want to see him more as far as the workload.
- 14:52But as far as what we have in Jadarian Price, you know, some of the great runners
- 14:57that I know and that we, what, what, what we do, we make our, blockers
- 15:02correct, and we stay true to that.
- 15:04Mm-hmm.
- 15:04We know how important it is because, the small things matter, and
- 15:08those details is still a, a part of o- our unit as an offense.
- 15:12And now, I've always been that type of runner.
- 15:14I more so tend to lean on, through, through staying true technique
- 15:20but, but, but, but still taking those risks wh- wh- whenever it's necessary.
- 15:24But, but you know, it's the first game.
- 15:26Guy's excited.
- 15:27We all, you know, wanna, do, do great, and I think he did great.
- 15:31Any time you can get in the end zone and score in the NFL, it, it's a great deal.
- 15:34Clinton: Yeah, and he, he was, he was effective out of the backfield.
- 15:37We're talking about Jeremiyah Love of the Cardinals- Yeah
- 15:38who's coming up this week, of course.
- 15:39Hardly.
- 15:39And we're talking with Thomas Rawls right now on the Sea Hawkers Podcast
- 15:43for those maybe just joining.
- 15:44and for me, like I, I watched Jeremiyah L- Jeremi- Jeremiyah Love run
- 15:48the football And I try to weigh it versus what we see with, with Price.
- 15:52And you understand that Love was the one at, at Notre Dame and, and
- 15:56you know, Price was like the 1A.
- 15:57Like he's r- clearly getting drafted 32nd overall as well.
- 16:01But they do stylistically, they are kinda different looking to me too.
- 16:05Price, like he is powerful, but he, but he, he ki- like you talked about, like the
- 16:09square shoulders and kinda gliding a bit, with a, with- Yeah… with, with s-
- 16:14you know, specificity and decision-making.
- 16:16Yeah.
- 16:16Where Love to me is almost like an Is- Isaiah Pacheco, like with, with, with
- 16:22more skill to get to the outside, like a little bit more wild in his movements.
- 16:26He looks a little bit more like a gazelle out there, and Price
- 16:29is more of a smooth operator.
- 16:30That's my interpretation of watching a little bit of them at Notre Dame
- 16:33and some of, you know, NFL last week.
- 16:35From your point of view, how would you, how would you look at Price's
- 16:38game from a running back perspective versus what you see with Love?
- 16:41Rawls: He's a, he's a very, he's a very stout runner, you know?
- 16:45And, and like I said, being a consistent runner in this league
- 16:48is super important, especially when you coming in as a first-round pick.
- 16:51You just wanna make sure you be able to express who you are and get to the right
- 16:54places and be able to do those things.
- 16:57So I bet, I bet the running back coach over there, he's excited, but he's
- 17:00like, "Hey, like now, let's elevate now.
- 17:03Clinton: Mm.
- 17:03Rawls: Take it up a notch because now it's time even more."
- 17:07And, and that's something he probably don't have to tell him, but at the
- 17:09same time, I think, Price is gonna go, go into this week kinda
- 17:13licking his chops excited because one, you know, we got the win.
- 17:17Two, he had a opportunity to show who he was, and three, there's always room for
- 17:21growth and more And at the same time, him being at the, the, the second-string
- 17:26running back out at, Notre Dame behind Love, he's still got something to prove.
- 17:30Clinton: Mm-hmm.
- 17:31Rawls: And, and, and, and, and, and guys like that who love the game, and
- 17:35have humility like that, it transfer over from, from the work that, that, that
- 17:40he's gonna put in throughout the week.
- 17:42And then, and when he find that rhythm, and he find that wheel and that motivation
- 17:47to run that pill, I'm telling you, it, it, it's, it, it's something that
- 17:51it, it, it, it can, it can definitely be something, game-changing.
- 17:54And he can do it, because he showed the flashes.
- 17:57Even on a couple of his cutback runs when he, when he popped the clutch on a
- 18:01couple of them, when he got downhill, he didn't need to just plow through them.
- 18:04Just hit it and go.
- 18:06He, he…
- 18:06Because his shoulders, he, he's already a north, a north runner.
- 18:10He's already looking- Mm-hmm… to, to go forward.
- 18:12So everything else is pre-snap reads, right?
- 18:15So we wanna be able to pre-snap reads and trust it.
- 18:19And, and, and, and, and, and I think he got a great deal of
- 18:22that this, this past week, so.
- 18:25Clinton: Yeah.
- 18:25Rawls: Yeah.
- 18:26Clinton: That's great.
- 18:26Adam: So- That's
- 18:26Clinton: great.
- 18:27Adam: So with both these guys coming out of the same school, sharing the
- 18:29same- Yeah… backfield and all that…
- 18:30See, I'm kind of a, when it comes to, like, sports, I'm
- 18:32kind of a sports petty guy.
- 18:34Like, I, I-… like, like, the little rivalries within the rivalries.
- 18:36Just, just sports
- 18:37Clinton: though, Adam.
- 18:37Just sports.
- 18:38Yeah, I'm, yeah.
- 18:38Just sports
- 18:38Rawls: so
- 18:38Clinton: I'm the only- That's
- 18:38Adam: the
- 18:38Clinton: that's the only way you're pet- yeah, you're only
- 18:41Adam: petty in sports, yeah… I'm totally
- 18:42even-keeled, otherwise, right?
- 18:43Completely.
- 18:43Yeah, no
- 18:43Clinton: it's just sports.
- 18:43Completely.
- 18:43Yeah, sure, sure.
- 18:44Adam: we'll tell ourselves that.
- 18:46But anyway, so if you're Price and Love- Mm-hmm
- 18:48do you think it kinda matters to them coming into this game if one
- 18:52can feel they can outshine the other?
- 18:54Is that, is that competitiveness there?
- 18:56Like, even though you're not playing-… each other per se, right?
- 18:58Rawls: Right.
- 18:59man, I, I'm, I'm trying to think a little bit to my playing days, man.
- 19:02Yeah.
- 19:02I was playing some of the guys, man.
- 19:03I mean, we could play AP, all those guys when we- Right.
- 19:06You know?
- 19:06Yeah.
- 19:06I was thinking about that, you know, but, but, I never
- 19:09went into the game saying, "Hey, look, I'm gonna out-rush him."
- 19:11One, one thing I was trying to do was just make sure I d- I, I had less mistakes.
- 19:17Clinton: Hmm.
- 19:17Rawls: I, I did not wanna be the guy, right, to miss a block.
- 19:22I didn't wanna be the guy to miss a call.
- 19:24I didn't wanna be the guy to make a bad read, you know, because so- some of these
- 19:28plays don't matter until it matters, and that's what coach always reminded us
- 19:31you know, in, in the running back room.
- 19:33And so when those details are, are, are all of those de- are all the, are
- 19:38all the way there, you know, it gives him the opportunity to express himself
- 19:42to get to the second and third level, and then let's play some Seahawk football.
- 19:46You know?
- 19:46So, I think moving forward, like I said, even with Love, you know, like I
- 19:51said, he's a different type runner.
- 19:53Speed guy out the backfield.
- 19:56I'm still questioning is, is, if, you know, how much of a consistent runner
- 20:00he, he can be with the workload, you know?
- 20:03But not to say he still can't be successful.
- 20:04But I think we have that in Jadarian Price.
- 20:07I know that for sure that we can make our, our alignment right because
- 20:10once you buy into the, the, the system and the process of the, the
- 20:14offense, everything else is gonna take care of itself, especially
- 20:17here, with the Seattle Seahawks.
- 20:19So- Yeah… as long as he, as long as he, I think, approach the game with, with
- 20:23the same mentality that he's been with in practice and keep running the ball hard
- 20:28like that, he's gonna find himself on the other end, of the opponent's side, so.
- 20:32Clinton: Yeah.
- 20:33Lo- yeah, love it.
- 20:33And you mentioned, you know, y- you've said a couple times now, which is
- 20:36great, that the consistency helps the, the lineman be right because they're
- 20:40executing what they believe is what they should go do, and then it's like
- 20:43okay, it's up to you behind me to read that that, to trust that that is there.
- 20:47Yeah.
- 20:48And from what we saw, Price seems to- Yeah… k- it's almost like he just gets it.
- 20:52It's like yep, that's where- Yeah… he, that was the, that was the hole that
- 20:55would give you the maximum on that play.
- 20:57Check.
- 20:57Rawls: Cool.
- 20:57Clinton: You know, and the next one- I mean, you
- 20:58Rawls: know what?
- 20:58You wanna know what's, you wanna know what's bad?
- 21:00I want you to look at something the next time you go watch
- 21:02some football, Adam, you all.
- 21:03Yeah.
- 21:03When you go look, go, go look at some of the linemen sometimes c-
- 21:06because if a back overrun the hole, the lineman will look for him like
- 21:09"Hey, where'd you g- where are you?"
- 21:10Clinton: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:11Rawls: Right?
- 21:11Right, right?
- 21:12Yeah.
- 21:12With some of the great runners- Yeah, yeah… we already, l- look, we moving forward.
- 21:15We-… you know, move, you know, we picking up, we
- 21:18picking up the running back.
- 21:19You know, we already trying to…
- 21:20You know?
- 21:20So, you know, just be aware of those small things.
- 21:23It, it, and once again, it still show the love to the game.
- 21:26Mm-hmm… because, a- being, being an anticipated running back can
- 21:31kind of, be a blessing and a curse at the running back position when you
- 21:35talk about being a starter in this NFL.
- 21:38But, it's nothing to take away from success, like I said.
- 21:41But at the same time, I also know that a lot of those details matter in
- 21:46big plays for big moments for other people too, and it matters because
- 21:50it's just, it's just what it is.
- 21:51It's just the nature of the game.
- 21:53Clinton: Well, you mentioned earlier, like work- you mentioned workload a couple
- 21:56times as well, and, you know, third down.
- 21:57We did not see Jadarian Price really on third down at all.
- 22:01And again, fir- first, first game so far.
- 22:03But also, Jeremiyah Love I think only had, 11, I think he had 11 attempts for
- 22:08for himself with that nice touchdown.
- 22:10So let's talk about workload as a rookie.
- 22:13So Price, 10 carries, you know, 5.2
- 22:15you know, average, 52 yards.
- 22:18And we gotta keep in mind as Seahawks fans, I think we only
- 22:22ran 48 offensive plays in total.
- 22:25So, you know, most times in a game you're running 60, 65.
- 22:28The Saints last week, I think they ran 85 plays last week, the
- 22:31Saints, in that loss to Detroit.
- 22:33So 48, or I think we were around there, that's really, really small.
- 22:37But workload-wise, we hear these, these pundits kind of talking like, "Oh, well
- 22:42he wasn't the main guy at Notre Dame, so maybe he's not ready for a workload."
- 22:47Just in general, d- what do you think of, like man-to-man
- 22:50you ran the ball in the NFL.
- 22:52Yeah.
- 22:52You were a rookie- Yeah… in the NFL.
- 22:54Yeah.
- 22:54Do you think Jadarian Price is ready for a, a bigger workload if the coaches
- 22:59were like, "We're gonna put it on you"?
- 23:00Rawls: As Jadarian Price, I bet they holding him back a little bit
- 23:03more, because that's your mindset.
- 23:04Mm-hmm.
- 23:05But at the same time, through the truth of this game, we gotta ease our way in.
- 23:09You know, everybody's situation is different, and one thing about
- 23:12this Seahawk organization, and the coaching staff, and the medical staff
- 23:15and everybody too, we're gonna make the best decisions that we have to
- 23:18do to put us in the best position.
- 23:20So we have to at least buy into that process too.
- 23:23And I know it's tough for the 12s because we always been successful, you know
- 23:27at, at what we do, and we do it so great, and we wanna kind of catch him up.
- 23:30But I think he's there.
- 23:32I think, like I said, we, we, we're gonna see a little bit more.
- 23:35I wouldn't be surprised if they give him a few more carries.
- 23:37Clinton: Mm-hmm.
- 23:37Rawls: But, but, but, but him being a second-string running back at
- 23:41Notre Dame, it doesn't mean, you know, he's not ready for 20-plus carries.
- 23:45He's that type of runner.
- 23:46Yeah.
- 23:46He's a na- He's more…
- 23:47I think he's also a more natural runner than Love.
- 23:50That's, that's what I really try to get across.
- 23:52Clinton: Mm-hmm.
- 23:52Rawls: He's more of a natural runner.
- 23:53If you give him more c- if you give him a same amount of carries, I'm put-
- 23:57I'm, I'm double down on Price That's what I- Yeah… you know, from what I've seen
- 24:02from what, from, from what I've seen.
- 24:03Then he can grind it out too, because he, you know, once he start to get
- 24:08more, of his girth as far as, you know, underneath him, his, his feet
- 24:12underneath him throughout the year, maybe a couple more games and, you know
- 24:16throughout the year, the season, he gonna take advantage of what I just said as far
- 24:19as when the defenses get breaking down.
- 24:21He can feel the breath of the defense.
- 24:22He start- Mm-hmm… catching the ball a little bit more.
- 24:24Now he's in on third down.
- 24:26You know, so right now we're gonna, you know, we're gonna put Holani in.
- 24:29You know, we, we gonna, we gonna try to, you know, ease him in, let him see.
- 24:32You know, see what he can do.
- 24:34because it's certain things that we wanna see to make sure
- 24:36he's moving forward and not, you know, over-pushing anything else.
- 24:40But at the same time, he got all the confidence to do it all, you know.
- 24:43So when the coaches feel the need to keep him in there, keep him in there or
- 24:47keep him in there a couple more times, give him a couple more carries, I think
- 24:50they'll, he'll find his way even more because that's what a running backs need.
- 24:53He need that rhythm.
- 24:54He need that
- 24:56Adam: So you talked about third down, and we didn't see him much there.
- 24:59What are the main things that keep you off the field as a running
- 25:02back early, as a young back?
- 25:04Mm-hmm.
- 25:04Is it simply just pass protection, or is- I think it's,… are
- 25:07there more elements to it?
- 25:08In, like, in terms of pass protection, is the thing that you need to acclimate to
- 25:14as a rookie, is it the physicality of it?
- 25:16Is it, like, just knowing your checks and your reads?
- 25:19Like, what makes that difficult for young guys to pick up early?
- 25:21Rawls: So I don't think it's the physicality of it, because we
- 25:24otherwise we wouldn't be on the field, so we can handle these guys.
- 25:26Mm-hmm.
- 25:27It's more so are you able to, you know, read a defense.
- 25:30That's why, earlier when I was talking about…
- 25:32I know we was talking about running the ball.
- 25:34I'm sorry.
- 25:34I should've been more specific about that, about pre-snap reads.
- 25:37So we have pre-snap reads when running the ball, but we also have pre-snap
- 25:41reads as far as, in pass protection.
- 25:44So the faster you can identify and count, and, and identify the front and make
- 25:49sure everything is there, y- and see it before it happen, because in a game
- 25:54it becomes a little bit more faster.
- 25:56And then, and, and also in the game, you may be able to see a look, right?
- 26:00A- and it may…
- 26:01It could be a look that we practiced in practice or may be something we haven't
- 26:04but can you still identify the call and still know who and what to pick up?
- 26:07So you gotta be, you know, you gotta be a, a, a great steward to this game, too.
- 26:12You know?
- 26:12So him playing special teams, him being a first-round pick, him being
- 26:16behind Love, I think he's one of those kids where he's, he's taking it in.
- 26:21And yeah, he can go out there and make some more plays and make, you know, g-
- 26:24give you some highlight runs, but hey, he's staying true because he's buying
- 26:27into this process in which it's gonna be a difference maker, you know, o-
- 26:31over the, course of the year in the season, when, w- when, when
- 26:36whenever his opportunities is given.
- 26:38So when, when- whenever Holani come in, he give him, you know, third
- 26:41down, and he, he, he, he's also been a great asset, you know, to come in and
- 26:46kind of, you know, be there whenever he get his opportunities, you know?
- 26:50So, you know-
- 26:51Clinton: Mm-hmm
- 26:52… Rawls: we got a great trajectory right now I think for Price, man, in
- 26:54that backfield, and, I think as long as they keep feeding off each
- 26:57other, too, that, Price is gonna, you know, take the reign at some
- 27:01point and never look back on that one until, until later on in the season.
- 27:04Clinton: Yeah.
- 27:05So, you know, we're talking about workload.
- 27:07We're talking with Thomas Rawls, Seahawks running back from the…
- 27:10If you guys remember, some, some folks might not.
- 27:12You know, there might be some newer fans out there that don't realize that
- 27:15in 2015 and that era, that with that team, you were, you were ripping it up.
- 27:20So as a rookie in 2015, I know the answer if I ask you, "Hey, what was it like?"
- 27:25You know, "Did you wanna go get 20 carries?"
- 27:27You're probably like, "I wanna get 100 carries.
- 27:28Like, give me, give me, give me-" Come on, man.
- 27:30That's my, that's my mindset.
- 27:30Rawls: That's what
- 27:31Clinton: I- So I know, I know what the answer is there.
- 27:33Yeah.
- 27:33But take us back to a specific day.
- 27:35So October 11th, 2015 versus the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 27:40I'll give the stat line, but I want you to convey how you felt
- 27:44that day, what was going right.
- 27:45So we're talking about giving…
- 27:46this is 2015.
- 27:47You're a rookie.
- 27:48Right.
- 27:48This is now like week six.
- 27:50And your journey to the NFL was different than a first rounder.
- 27:54Like, it was just, that was a different journey.
- 27:55Rawls: Yeah, it was different, yeah.
- 27:57Clinton: Right, right.
- 27:57It was a, just a d- Yeah… different journey to, to get on the field the way
- 28:00you did and, and earn, earn your touches.
- 28:03So October 11th, 2015, here's…
- 28:05And by the way, I gotta give a shout-out to Dan Viens.
- 28:07I was on with him live today on Seahawks- Shout out to A, shout out to him.
- 28:10Yeah, and he's like, he's like, "Hey, ask," and he's like
- 28:12"Ask him about that game."
- 28:14I said, "You got it.
- 28:14You got it, Dan."
- 28:15So this is, this is for Dan.
- 28:16But 20, 23 rushing attempts.
- 28:1923.
- 28:20169 yards and a 69 yard touchdown to the house that day.
- 28:26So what's going right on a day like that?
- 28:28I know the answer's everything, but-… we want, we want
- 28:31specifics on the Sea Hawkers Podcast.
- 28:33Rawls: Look, man, I, I, I know.
- 28:34It's, it's tough.
- 28:35I mean, just, just having fun.
- 28:36I, it was like I was in the zone.
- 28:38Clinton: Mm.
- 28:38Rawls: And then i- it, it felt like practice again because that's how I
- 28:41always approch, approached it.
- 28:43I practiced how I played, you know?
- 28:45So, by, by the time I got to that time, you know, you know, when
- 28:49I was on the bench and, and Marshawn said that I was gonna finish the
- 28:52game, man, it was like a shock.
- 28:55But I couldn't thinks, I, I couldn't think about the plays.
- 28:57I'm, "Oh, just grab my, go play."
- 29:00So you know, like I say, the preparation before everything I think is the, the
- 29:05first development en route to it all.
- 29:08And then after that, when your opportu- when my opportunity was
- 29:11called, I, I was already prepared.
- 29:14I just needed to go out and just go do the right things, take care
- 29:17of the ball, and go have fun.
- 29:19A- a- and I got a chance to do that.
- 29:20And then, to, to experience that in a facet, in a style to even…
- 29:26I feel like I can even make my lineman look good.
- 29:28You know, I was just-… you know, ugh, just in that zone.
- 29:32But, it, it was definitely one of those games.
- 29:35I had all my family there.
- 29:37You know, that was- Cool… the first game my granny got a chance
- 29:39to come there too on the bus.
- 29:41That's awesome.
- 29:41So it, it was very emotional to me because I didn't even know I was gonna play.
- 29:45And, you know, so, but, but man, I mean, when I got out there, my mentality
- 29:51was, "[catfish], I gotta set the tone now.
- 29:53I can't wait."
- 29:54I couldn't wait.
- 29:55I think my…
- 29:55I remember.
- 29:56I don't remember every good run that game, guys, but I remember the first carry.
- 30:00It was only like a two or three yard run, right?
- 30:02And then in my mind, I wanted, th- this is real talk.
- 30:05Tell 'em.
- 30:06You know, in my mind I said
- 30:10I got a rise.
- 30:12Now And after that, whatever that was, it, it wasn't that I had
- 30:18to elevate to the speed of the game, the physicality of the game.
- 30:22It was…
- 30:23I was already prepared.
- 30:24I just needed to go ahead and go do what I love to do it, and do it, a- a- and do it
- 30:28a- and never forget why I, why I do it.
- 30:31A- a- and then I, when I look at my team, the guys I had on that team, you know
- 30:36they, they played the game for a reason.
- 30:39And, and, and man, when you can rely on small, small things like
- 30:43that, you can pull from that.
- 30:44And man, I, like I said, I was a kid.
- 30:46I was a kid doing what I love.
- 30:48I was a focused kid.
- 30:49I'm telling you, I just, I just loved the game.
- 30:51And then after I caught the flow of the game, everything
- 30:53else became even slower to me.
- 30:56So I always had to go b- the, I always had to, go back to the
- 31:00root and the foundation and a.5
- 31:04of a breath after, after the, after the play.
- 31:09And, and it's so tough to do.
- 31:11It, it, it, I can't really talk about it, but if you give yourself a chance
- 31:14and work towards that, everything is there, the explosiveness, the
- 31:18continuity to the game, the pre-snap read, the, the, the flow.
- 31:24it, the game will get slower for you.
- 31:26you can see it before it happen.
- 31:30you can play with any defender.
- 31:33no matter if it's eight or nine man in the box, you can jump.
- 31:36Y- you can still stay true to the, to the play and still jump c-
- 31:40jump cut to the D gap by, by, by, by giving yourself a chance, by staying
- 31:45true to your techniques and, and, and doing all of those things.
- 31:49A- a- a- and that's what I got lost in, a- because I didn't
- 31:52know really what I was doing.
- 31:53I didn't see the field.
- 31:54I'm just, I'm playing, doing what I'm doing.
- 31:56But, but I'm giving myself a chance through these small mechanisms.
- 31:59And, and like I said, man, if you ever approach the game as far as like
- 32:04one of the younger guys pricing these guys, your pass protection reads are
- 32:09just as important as your, run reads.
- 32:12A- a- and, and once you understand, you know, what that means, that mean coach
- 32:17don't have to tell you to speed up on this run, s- you know, press the heels
- 32:21of the line of scrimmage on this run.
- 32:22It, it becomes a little bit more natural.
- 32:24It becomes a little bit more you, you know?
- 32:27And that's what I was talking about, about elevating your game to the point
- 32:30where you can take the game, take the knowledge, and still express it to you
- 32:33'cause that's why you're here, you know?
- 32:35So when you're able to do that and you're able, be a young kid and be
- 32:39coachable and, and be so humble about it and still show it
- 32:44and, a- a- and get better, week to week, I think that trajectory is greater
- 32:48than, than most people can really know.
- 32:50Adam: For sure.
- 32:51I, I like the way that you connected little things like Russ used to say
- 32:55the separation and the preparation, how that leads to a flow state, and
- 32:58then once you're in that flow state, how the game kind of comes to you.
- 33:02I think that's really cool.
- 33:03We saw a guy get in that flow this last Monday night in Kenneth Walker III.
- 33:09He had himself a game.
- 33:10Boy went off, right?
- 33:12Woo.
- 33:13Do you think that- I don't think there's any regret in the back of John Schneider's
- 33:16mind about not finding a way to pay him
- 33:21Rawls: Woo.
- 33:22Adam: Yeah.
- 33:23You know?
- 33:24Yeah.
- 33:24Rawls: We all on this conference call- I
- 33:26Adam: was
- 33:26Rawls: like- You're damn right
- 33:27did you hear
- 33:27Adam: that?
- 33:27Look, man… I'm gonna say
- 33:27Rawls: this.
- 33:27Look, we all know how John feel about p- paying individual guys
- 33:30over the whole team roster.
- 33:31That's true.
- 33:31We know that.
- 33:32Adam: Yeah.
- 33:32Rawls: We know that, right?
- 33:33So i- it's kinda, it's kinda one of those things where you kinda, kinda think about.
- 33:38But I, I bet you probably kinda think about, especially that type of game.
- 33:42Because, because think about it, coming out, setting the tone, setting the…
- 33:45You know, you know, you gotta look at that running back stat.
- 33:48You know?
- 33:48And, and when, w- and, and when you a Seattle Seahawk, and we pride
- 33:51ourself on running the football, it look like K9 did a lot of running.
- 33:55Adam: Mm-hmm.
- 33:55Rawls: You know?
- 33:55You know, but, but, but like I said, you know, we, we got, we got, we
- 34:00got Price right now, and, he's a, he's a young, he- he's a younger guy.
- 34:03But even though I was young, it didn't matter.
- 34:06It, it don't matter if you're young.
- 34:07It, it's not about age, it's not about your status, your title.
- 34:11It's about when you get this ball and your opportunity is
- 34:13given, what you gonna do with it?
- 34:15How you gonna express yourself?
- 34:17How you gonna change the game?
- 34:19How you gonna leave your legacy?
- 34:21What are you gonna do?
- 34:23W- are you gonna do the small things right?
- 34:24Are you gonna take care of your body?
- 34:26Are you gonna eat right?
- 34:27Are you gonna stay around and stay around, people who keep you grounded?
- 34:31Are you gonna keep looking for ways to get better?
- 34:33Because they're not always there.
- 34:34Do you understand how to create those opportunities when
- 34:37they're not even right there?
- 34:38You gotta be able to trust in, you gotta be able to trust the process
- 34:41within the work a- and believe in that.
- 34:44A- a- a- and sometimes, you know, on hard days, you know, it's even
- 34:49i- i- i- i- it still formulates.
- 34:52That's how much you gotta love it, you know?
- 34:54I don't know what I just went on, on, on now, but it-… it was real.
- 34:58Sorry.
- 34:58Clinton: Oh, it's all, it's all good.
- 35:00Like, look, I think we were all feeling it w- when we watched the Monday Night
- 35:03Football game with, with K9 out there.
- 35:06And I think the majority of s- I think the overwhelming majority of Seahawks
- 35:09fans were like, "Good f- good for you."
- 35:11Yeah.
- 35:11You know?
- 35:11We, we, I think most Seahawks fans realized how special he was, and I think
- 35:15most Seahawks fans could honestly say, like, he was underutilized at least a
- 35:19little bit in the Pacific Northwest.
- 35:21Now it all worked out.
- 35:22We got a chip.
- 35:23He w- he, we win the Super Bowl, he wins Super Bowl MVP.
- 35:27And John did not wanna put that chunk of money, which ended up being
- 35:29a little over $14 million, into a running back, and i- and i- instead
- 35:33decides to sink a first rounder.
- 35:36And we've been talking all day about, like, it, that it looks like a really…
- 35:39The choice, we'll see how it all plays out over time.
- 35:41But the selection currently to say, "We're g- we're gonna take a, a first
- 35:46round wave at Jadarian Price," where many folks thought he might slip to the second
- 35:50round, and John said, "Not so fast.
- 35:52We're gonna take that guy," so far so good.
- 35:55So, and we all-
- 35:56Rawls: I still think, I, I still think John made a statement with it.
- 35:59But, but think about it, Clinton.
- 36:01Are we really surprised that Kenneth had that, that game?
- 36:04Clinton: No.
- 36:05No.
- 36:06We're
- 36:06Rawls: not even s- No.
- 36:06Okay.
- 36:06You see, you see what I'm saying?
- 36:08Adam: So how do y- Only a tiny bit.
- 36:09Only a tiny bit.
- 36:10Yeah, how?
- 36:10Because when I think of Andy Reid, I don't think of running the rock.
- 36:13You know what I mean?
- 36:14so I was a little bit surprised.
- 36:15Well, I think he
- 36:15Clinton: I think he, but I think with, like, Mahomes coming off a, a knee, right?
- 36:18That was a knee.
- 36:19Yeah.
- 36:19And, like, it's, he does not have…
- 36:21It's, it- you know, I'm not throwing shade at these are all much better
- 36:24athletes than me, but he's got a Rashee Rice, and an aging Kelce, and, I mean
- 36:29okay, Xavier Worthy and some others, but it's, it's not, this is not the
- 36:33Rawls: s- It seem like he's running with a little bit more to, it, it
- 36:35seem like he's running with a little bit more to play for, it seem like.
- 36:38I mean- It seem
- 36:39Clinton: like
- 36:39Rawls: he's, he, he's playing with some statement.
- 36:40Clinton: I don't know.
- 36:40I mean, I'm not, I'm not sure about that.
- 36:42I mean, maybe, maybe.
- 36:43I, I think he always ran super hard and to, and got what he
- 36:46could, got what he could.
- 36:47I also think the, they ran to a Broncos team that's supposed to have this great
- 36:51defense and, and the Chiefs kind of said, "Not so fast," you know, in, in general.
- 36:55Yeah.
- 36:55And look, he, he does what he does.
- 36:56He bounces one to the outside and goes for 60 yards like K9 does
- 37:00and he j- he's jump- That's what he does… and he's jumping through
- 37:02jumping through hoops, like in- Right… in the middle of traffic and
- 37:05getting- Yeah… free for 10, 11 yards.
- 37:08He is an explosive run maker.
- 37:10So I wasn't surprised by it whatsoever.
- 37:13Now, will he do that for 17 games?
- 37:15I'm not talking about injury.
- 37:16Mm.
- 37:16I mean, will he do that consistently?
- 37:18No.
- 37:18No, he's not gonna probably rush- No… for 2,000 plus yards, but a great
- 37:21start for Kenneth Walker, and we can just tip the cap and say, "That's cool."
- 37:25But we also know how John likes to construct rosters and, you know
- 37:28there is this overarching thought in the NFL, Thomas and Adam, about
- 37:32like, well, you don't pay running backs these, these top contracts.
- 37:36You don't pay running backs these top contracts.
- 37:39A, that was not always the case, right?
- 37:41Like, go back to the Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders days.
- 37:44Sometimes, sometimes…
- 37:45Or Herschel Walker trade, right?
- 37:47Yeah.
- 37:47Sometimes you paid running backs the, the biggest money in the entire
- 37:51sport because they touch the ball the most, besides the quarterback.
- 37:54Rawls: Right.
- 37:54Clinton: And that was, so that has changed in more recent years, but
- 37:57the game is kind of going back to more, a bit more smash-mouth, more
- 38:0112, more 13, more fullbacks on the field, more running back touches.
- 38:06And if there was a time for a team to reinvest in a running back, take
- 38:11take the Seahawks and take K9 kind of out of the picture for a second.
- 38:15The NFL is rotating back to a more running league, and still, the market
- 38:20for a top-tier running back is $14 million versus, let's say, a mid-tier
- 38:26wide receiver getting paid $30 million.
- 38:29Right.
- 38:29Man, I'm just like- Right… cut…
- 38:31And I like Price- Right… but cut the check.
- 38:35It was okay.
- 38:36Yeah.
- 38:36Yeah.
- 38:36It would've been okay.
- 38:37He's a young man still.
- 38:39To cut that check and say, "We're keeping you in Seattle."
- 38:42It's so tough making- I'm okay with the decision, but-
- 38:45… Adam: decisions.
- 38:45Clinton: Ugh… e- e- economics is economics.
- 38:47Like I- Right… Adam, I, I know how you feel about- Yeah… Adam, I know how you
- 38:50feel about, like, mediocre wide receivers.
- 38:52It's like going out to dinner, you get a $130 bill and
- 38:55you're like, "That was okay."
- 38:57Not great, not great.
- 38:58Okay.
- 38:58I don't want to pay top dollar for okay food- Yeah… but I don't mind paying
- 39:02good money- Yeah… for great food.
- 39:04So Adam, where are you on the, on that- Mm-hmm… point of, like
- 39:07you know, after see- not even after what we saw with K9 on Monday night.
- 39:10We know how, we know who K9 is.
- 39:13Looking back on that decision, how do you feel about it?
- 39:16Adam: It's a tough one because you can't keep everybody, and that's
- 39:19one of the things that John Schneider talked about after the first Super
- 39:23Bowl run, is one of the big things he learned was the idea of you just
- 39:28can't run it back and keep everybody.
- 39:29You gotta have some change.
- 39:30You gotta have some flexibility with the salary cap and, and all of that stuff.
- 39:34Now, with all of that said, Clinton, the wide receiver money is stupid to me.
- 39:39It's, it's, it's insane.
- 39:41Right.
- 39:41It's an insane amount of money.
- 39:42Clinton: Big
- 39:43Adam: money.
- 39:43Like, how, how, how are we paying, you know, a, a mid-tier guy 20, 25
- 39:48million a year and we can't pay the top backs in this league that plus?
- 39:53Like, what are we doing?
- 39:54Running back is one of my- It's kinda
- 39:55Rawls: hard to defend it talking to a running back right now.
- 39:57You see what I mean?
- 39:58Right.
- 39:58Yeah.
- 39:58It's kinda hard.
- 39:59It's kinda hard.
- 40:00So-
- 40:01Adam: I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir, man, but, like, look, I love that
- 40:04this league is going more smash mouth.
- 40:06I love that the value for backs is starting to rise.
- 40:09I mean, and really, Thomas, it's a lot of what you guys kinda laid the
- 40:13foundation for over the last few years- That's what we do… you
- 40:15and the, the guys you played with.
- 40:17Rawls: We laid the foundation.
- 40:17Yeah.
- 40:17We, and we do deserve the, you know, opportunities, and I bet, you know
- 40:20as a lot of running backs, we don't wanna go into new systems, guys.
- 40:24Clinton: Mm.
- 40:24Rawls: We, you know, when we like, you know- Where we do our damage and
- 40:28where we, you know, we, we wanna, we wanna spend the rest of our careers there.
- 40:32Especially when we know what we can do, and we know, you know, behind
- 40:36everything that's behind it.
- 40:37But you know what, man?
- 40:38It's still, we're still able to, he's still able to take care
- 40:41of, of his, his life and his family moving forward in life.
- 40:44We gotta look at some type of good, guys.
- 40:46Mm-hmm.
- 40:46But, as far as within this NFL, within the league, we
- 40:50gotta do something about it.
- 40:51I mean, I'm out of it now, you know?
- 40:52I can only kind of move it forward and kind of- Right… pay homage to it now.
- 40:56But, I try to do that by, you know, sticking around and, and kind of
- 41:00using my voice to the game to this too.
- 41:02And, and thank you for the platform- Yeah… for it because, man- And, and we
- 41:04Clinton: say all this-… it's huge… and again, we can only, you
- 41:06know, the, you, you cannot pay everybody.
- 41:08So when we look at, hey, we look at the, the facts are, hey, they did pay JSN.
- 41:13They, they give JSN and Spoon g- you know, per- perfect, the right contracts for
- 41:19the top players in their, in their area.
- 41:21They resigned Leo.
- 41:22Shaheed too.
- 41:22They got Shaheed.
- 41:23They, they, they get Shaheed back.
- 41:24They get back Derick Hall.
- 41:26Last year, last year they, they, they make sure they go get Abe Lucas.
- 41:30The year before that they make sure they lock up Cross, right?
- 41:32Or, like, you know, the half year before that.
- 41:33So they've, J- John Schneider has definitely kept
- 41:37that core together for sure.
- 41:39And again, with all that said, we think we got, we think we got a good one.
- 41:43You've talked about the entire episode here.
- 41:44We think we got a good one with Jadarian Price, and I love the way you're talking
- 41:47about him being a consistent runner that c- it's like, okay, I can trust
- 41:52that guy to basically- If- When he's got the opportunity- If he get hot, ooh
- 41:55to do the, yeah.
- 41:56J- give him- 'Cause
- 41:57Rawls: he's consistent.
- 41:57I seen it
- 41:58… Clinton: give him, yeah, give him the chance to get hot, which to me is-
- 42:00I wanna-… 18 carries, 22 carries.
- 42:02Give him the chance to get hot.
- 42:03You said give
- 42:04Rawls: him a chance.
- 42:04We gotta run the football.
- 42:05We gotta run that ball.
- 42:06Thomas- Come
- 42:07Clinton: on, coach.
- 42:07Rawls: Let's run it.
- 42:08Clinton: Yeah, that's exactly what we really want.
- 42:09Let's run it.
- 42:09And again, we gotta get way more than 48 plays.
- 42:12We gotta get into the 60s, which means more first downs, more rhythm
- 42:15et cetera, et cetera, which I do expect against the Arizona Cardinals.
- 42:19Let's land it here, Thomas.
- 42:20So we are only one game into to Jadarian's, you know, NFL career
- 42:25but obviously you're, you're pretty high on, on the, on the possibility.
- 42:29So-
- 42:30Adam: Look at you, Clinton.
- 42:30You're setting up unfair questions for Thomas right here.
- 42:33Only one
- 42:34Rawls: to
- 42:36Adam: entertain.
- 42:37Rawls: This is like, I'm seeing, you see how he
- 42:38Clinton: look.
- 42:39Only one to entertain.
- 42:39You're gonna make-
- 42:39Adam: I'm going through the line like, "Ugh, what is…"
- 42:40And you're gonna make him take out his crystal Rawls ball- Come
- 42:42on… and make a prediction, man.
- 42:42Yep, yep
- 42:43Clinton: the
- 42:43Adam: Raw- Like-
- 42:44Clinton: We got a new, we got a new segment right there… I'ma
- 42:47put it on you, man… the Raw- the Raw- the Rawls ball.
- 42:48Yeah.
- 42:48The Rawls ball.
- 42:48Yes.
- 42:49We're gonna, we're gonna do this.
- 42:50That's exactly right.
- 42:51Like, 'cause Thomas is a smart man.
- 42:52I think, I think he is- Yeah, yeah… a soothsayer in all the ways.
- 42:55So what do you think, 17 games, let's knock on wood he stays healthy
- 43:00what kind of season do you think this guy can have statistically
- 43:03and impact-wise for the Seahawks?
- 43:06Rawls: I think, I think honestly, I, I think if he can stay healthy, but
- 43:09we know how the running back position is.
- 43:11We know what we signed up for.
- 43:12We know things happen.
- 43:14But, Just, just throughout the year, I, I think we, we can get in between, I
- 43:20think we can get close to 1,000 yards.
- 43:23Okay.
- 43:23I, I truly do.
- 43:24I truly do.
- 43:25Yeah.
- 43:25I think, I think 800, I think eight- about 800 to 1,000 yards.
- 43:30Clinton: Nice.
- 43:31You said sev- 1,700 yards.
- 43:33Adam, I heard 1,700.
- 43:34That's just what I heard, okay?
- 43:35Rawls: Oh, you, oh you heard it.
- 43:37Clinton: Maybe I hear what I wanna hear though.
- 43:38I don't know.
- 43:38Rawls: You, the…
- 43:39Well, well, the thing is that I, I, I, I, I wanna see how, how
- 43:43much we're gonna really play him.
- 43:44Yeah.
- 43:44If we're gonna give him those carries and, and run the, and run, and run that
- 43:47football, but I, I do definitely think he'll definitely be over 1,000 yards.
- 43:51Clinton: Nice.
- 43:51Rawls: Okay.
- 43:52Clinton: We gotta, we gotta- Yeah… b- to nudge up a little
- 43:54Rawls: bit though.
- 43:541,700, 2,000.
- 43:55We can, we can break all the records if that's what he…
- 43:58I, I really wanna, I really, I really wanna see, if he can get to double
- 44:01digit touchdowns, maybe about, I wanna say about 12 to 13 touchdowns.
- 44:06Clinton: Nice.
- 44:06Rawls: Probably more.
- 44:07You said more than that.
- 44:08Clinton: No, no.
- 44:08That, that'd be a, that…
- 44:09Hey, man, 12, 13 as a rookie- I mean, I-… that'd be a cool-
- 44:12That's a-… that'd be a cool
- 44:12Rawls: year
- 44:13Clinton: by
- 44:13Rawls: me… I mean, think, think about it.
- 44:14Use him a lot in the red zone.
- 44:15Clinton: Yeah.
- 44:16Rawls: You know, th- when I, when I think about the, the guys that we have in
- 44:18the backfield, he could be a horse right now that we actually not even see set up.
- 44:23He run like…
- 44:24He, he run, he run, he run like it.
- 44:25Yeah.
- 44:26It looked like, he loved to run the ball, you know, so…
- 44:29But I think, him personally, I just think he just wanna get through this
- 44:33season and make sure that he's, he's, he, he, he's f- he, he finishes runs.
- 44:38Mm-hmm.
- 44:38He, he, he's finishing the season, healthy and everything too.
- 44:42So I think he's gonna give it all he got.
- 44:43I think the, the, the team will, take care of him as far as, you know
- 44:49getting him ready week to week because he is a younger guy taking on, you know
- 44:53potentially a greater amount of a load.
- 44:55So I think once he get that recipe, man, I think he's
- 44:59gonna do great this year, man.
- 45:00I really do.
- 45:02Adam: Yeah, that's music to my ears.
- 45:03If he managed to pop off for over 1,000 yards this year, that's a monster year.
- 45:07If he gets 12 to 13 touchdowns- I, I think so.
- 45:071,000
- 45:09Rawls: yards- I know it, man… is
- 45:10Adam: nothing.
- 45:101,800 to
- 45:10Rawls: 1,000- That's a big year.
- 45:10That's a big year.
- 45:11I smoke-
- 45:14Clinton: That's a big year.
- 45:15Yeah, go ahead.
- 45:15I'm just trying to, I'm just trying to shift windows on you, that's all, Thomas.
- 45:16Adam: But like- Dude, if he gets to 12 or 13 touchdowns, guys, we're hoisting
- 45:19another Lombardi at the end of this year.
- 45:20Clinton: Oh, I like that.
- 45:21I like that.
- 45:21Use
- 45:21Rawls: him a lot in the reds.
- 45:22I
- 45:23Clinton: mean, he, honestly, man, more of a- Well, that thing
- 45:24we got down to like the two or the three last game, right?
- 45:26Then we had, then we had our, like, procedure.
- 45:27We had the delay of game and then a procedural penalty.
- 45:30But, but we had, like, Shaheed in the back, which is…
- 45:33I get it, you know, Fleury's gonna wanna try some things.
- 45:35I, I get it.
- 45:36But when we got down to the three-yard line and we were, we were right there
- 45:38in the stands, we were, we facing and look, watching it coming at us
- 45:41I'm sitting there going, "Man, put Brady Russell back there at fullback.
- 45:45Put out your two, put out Saubert, put out Barner, and put, you know
- 45:49Price behind, behind, Brady Russell, and give the man the rock."
- 45:53Yeah.
- 45:53Because of everything you said earlier, Thomas, is like, he makes
- 45:57sound decisions over and over.
- 45:59And while you…
- 46:00And when you do that in an NFL game with 20 touches, 18 touches, 22
- 46:04touches, those good decisions compile.
- 46:06They compile- Imagine
- 46:07Rawls: how the team feels at, Fleury Field.
- 46:10You know, when we can be consistent runners, we doing-
- 46:12Mm… everything we're doing with
- 46:14Clinton: Everything opens up, right?
- 46:15Rawls: The play action pass.
- 46:16The, JSN took advantage, got it right there, right?
- 46:20Mm-hmm.
- 46:20Turned it up for a touchdown.
- 46:21Like, we can e- we can be one of the best offenses easily in
- 46:25the NFL just by doing right.
- 46:27Yeah.
- 46:27And, and I can tell you one thing, I'm not worried, but, with Drew
- 46:31Lock, he definitely gonna have a great, a, a great, opportunity
- 46:35right now, too- Yeah… to step in and do it exactly what he just did.
- 46:38I don't think it's hard either, because even…
- 46:40You remember, guys, Adam, Clinton, you remember earlier on in the year, when
- 46:44the guys were talking about, you know, how the plays, how the playbook was and, you
- 46:48know, the offensive system and how there was receiving of plays in the offense?
- 46:53Clinton: Yeah.
- 46:53Rawls: You know, even though that was coming from the offensive
- 46:55coordinator, it gotta be received through the quarterbacks.
- 46:58You know, so, so, so the, the team is about the team.
- 47:02A- a- and that, and that's what I can see.
- 47:04And, it seem like it don't even matter who's in there because
- 47:07even when we had questions about the, the secondary, you know
- 47:11they showed up in a lot of areas.
- 47:13You know, we have some, you know, a c- a couple miss house
- 47:15but it still wasn't nothing.
- 47:17It still wasn't anything we couldn't get over- Mm-hmm… that
- 47:19we showed up, for.
- 47:20So I think it give, I think it give us a, a great amount of confidence
- 47:23on offense to know the type of team that, that we truly have.
- 47:27Clinton: Yeah, it's a, hey, man, it's a Super Bowl championship team
- 47:31and it's, it's primed, it's primed to have another really successful year.
- 47:35And Thomas, we're always pumped up to have you on the Sea Hawkers Podcast.
- 47:39Let, please, for those folks that joined a little after we started introducing

- 48:25You know, so we got, got the Christmas party.
- 48:27You know, I'ma dress up as Black Santa
- 48:31Adam: 34 offense.
- 48:31Is Michael Bennett gonna let you do that
- 48:33Rawls: man?
- 48:33I'm
- 48:33Adam: a beard baby.
- 48:34Rawls: I'm a beard baby.
- 48:35Yo.
- 48:36But man, I, but, but honestly, I get a chance to hang out and, with the
- 48:4012s and the people and have a good time, make moments and memories and, and get
- 48:44a chance to, you know, make, make, make, make, make, the best of everything
- 48:48after the game and have some fun.
- 48:50Yeah.
- 48:50Clinton: Good.
- 48:51Good.
- 48:51No, we lo- we absolutely love having you on.
- 48:53It's, it's beyond, it's good energy, but it's, it's great content as well.

- 49:00feel on the fact that, hey, we're 1 and 0, we get to go down to the dirty
- 49:04desert, we got our star stud running back who's gonna go against another
- 49:09running back out there in love, but, but man, I think the price is right.
- 49:13I feel good about laying a little wood on Price this week.
- 49:16Let's make 'em pay.
- 49:16Baby, let's make them pay.
- 49:17Adam, how do you feel- Let's make
- 49:19' Rawls: em pay
- 49:19… Clinton: how you feeling about that as, as we exit tonight, man?
- 49:22Adam: Man, if he ain't feeling good about all that-… I
- 49:24don't know what to do.
- 49:25Just rewind this podcast.
- 49:26Let Thomas- Get it
- 49:27he's fired up, man.
- 49:28He's given us- Man… all the reasons to believe in what we're seeing.
- 49:30I
- 49:30Rawls: was blowing, hey Adam, hey listen to this.
- 49:32I was blowing cleanup.
- 49:33Yeah.

- 50:18I, Adam, are we gonna do a, we, we talked about it.
- 50:20Are we gonna do a little live, are we gonna be looking at the
- 50:23the game live on Sunday ourselves?
- 50:24We discussed it, but we didn't say yes or no.
- 50:27Yeah.

- 50:30Rawls: Thinking about it.
- 50:30Clinton: Yeah, maybe that
- 50:32Rawls: might happen.
- 50:32Yeah, thinking about it.
- 50:32It's gonna be fu- well, I could tell you this, it, it would, it probably wouldn't
- 50:35be bad to do it, only because I know like, I know it's gonna be like a crazy
- 50:40matchup between these running backs.
- 50:42Clinton: Yeah.
- 50:42Rawls: Yeah, man.
- 50:42Because I feel like, because I feel like even with, he didn't have a
- 50:45crazy workload, that mean this week-
- 50:48Clinton: That's
- 50:48Rawls: it
- 50:48put him out there, coach.
- 50:49He gotta- That's it… we, we got, we gotta, we gotta
- 50:50Clinton: do a little bit more.
- 50:50We want, we want 18, we want…
- 50:52Here's, here's the line we want, 18- Yeah… at least 18 rushes, 119 yards
- 50:58and two tuddies- First down… for Jadarian Price, as we get our second- Ooh.
- 51:02We got the- Can we get a
- 51:02Rawls: few catches for the running backs?
- 51:03Come on.
- 51:03Clinton: Yeah, let's get like a-
- 51:05Rawls: Come on.
- 51:06Yeah.
- 51:06Come on.
- 51:06I've been backfield.
- 51:06Come on.
- 51:06We at least gotta get a few
- 51:07Clinton: catches in there.
- 51:08How, how about three for 52?
- 51:09Sound good?
- 51:10Rawls: I love it.
- 51:11Three for 52 sounds nice.
- 51:13That's it.
- 51:13Probably a touchdown.
- 51:13My man.
- 51:14I, I wouldn't be surprised, because he very underrated coming out the backfield.
- 51:17I know.
- 51:17Tur- Third down.
- 51:18Turns out, he was, yeah.
- 51:19Hey, listen to this.
- 51:20We'll see Sunday.
- 51:23Clinton: Beautiful stuff.
- 51:24All right.
- 51:24I think with that-
- 51:26Adam: There's only one thing left to say.
- 51:27Clinton: Go Hawks.
- 51:28Adam: Go Hawks.
- 51:29Rawls: Go Hawks.
- 51:30Choo
- 51:30Clinton: choo.
