- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning from Seahawks headquarters in Renton. Headlines are brought
- 0:09Speaker 2: to you by Frost Brewed Coors Light, as cold as
- 0:11Speaker 2: the Rockies. The Kraken went up three, nothing in the
- 0:15Speaker 2: second period, then lost the entire lead to Detroit Red
- 0:17Speaker 2: Wings last night at Climate Pledge Arena. Detroit scored three
- 0:20Speaker 2: goals late. And the Kraken won the game in a
- 0:23Speaker 2: shootout this way. Bobby McMahon won in Philly.
- 0:26Speaker 3: He's got a chance to put Seattle on top here.
- 0:28Speaker 2: With some speed, McMahon in.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Wade scores!
- 0:33Speaker 2: Dylan Larkin comes out. What an excellent job there.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Just a quick flick of the wrist.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Dylan Larkin. Against Grubauer. Larkin slows down.
- 0:44Speaker 5: Grubauer!
- 0:47Speaker 6: And Seattle comes away with a 4-3.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Win in a shootout.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Thought we'd give you our guy Ian Furness on the
- 0:55Speaker 2: Kraken TV call last night.
- 0:57Speaker 7: He sounded phenomenal.
- 0:58Speaker 3: He did.
- 0:59Speaker 2: He was great. John Forsman was away.
- 1:01Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I also like it when people who regularly
- 1:03Speaker 5: do radio do the TV calls because people who only
- 1:07Speaker 5: do television let the picture speak for you.
- 1:10Speaker 7: And Ian just nailed that.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Philip Grubauer again. I mean, I know Joey Decord's the future,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and he's been number one here the last year and
- 1:19Speaker 2: a half, but Philip Grubauer again in the clutch with
- 1:23Speaker 2: the save. Bob McMahon, that guy's a shooter. Give him
- 1:27Speaker 2: the shootouts any time. Kraken have six wins, three losses,
- 1:32Speaker 2: one overtime loss, third place in the Pacific Division, just
- 1:36Speaker 2: behind Edmonton and Vegas. Did you know this is the
- 1:39Speaker 2: most wins over the first ten games of a season
- 1:41Speaker 2: the Kraken have ever had? in their six years of existence.
- 1:43Speaker 7: I did hear that stat, and I liked it.
- 1:46Speaker 2: That is good. The Kraken are already eight points up
- 1:48Speaker 2: on the Canucks, who have lost eight in a row
- 1:50Speaker 2: up north. They're nine points ahead of the Kings and
- 1:53Speaker 2: the Flames in the division. The Kraken next play tomorrow
- 1:55Speaker 2: night at Climate Pledge Arena against the Utah Mammoth. The
- 1:59Speaker 2: Seahawks out here at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center preparing
- 2:02Speaker 2: to host the unbeaten Chiefs on Sunday night. Zach Charbonnet
- 2:05Speaker 2: is expected to be in the starting offense today at
- 2:07Speaker 2: practice in the running back's most work yet since his
- 2:10Speaker 2: reconstructive knee surgery eight months ago. Right guard Anthony Bradford
- 2:13Speaker 2: is practicing in his return from injured reserve. He's on
- 2:16Speaker 2: track to start Sunday night. It'll be the first time
- 2:19Speaker 2: the Seahawks' starting five offensive linemen from the Super Bowl
- 2:21Speaker 2: will start together since the opener September 9th against New England.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I don't know if you saw this story. Former Tennessee
- 2:28Speaker 2: Titans defensive lineman Jordan Elliott, he was a Titan until
- 2:31Speaker 2: this past weekend. He was attempting to retrieve a gun
- 2:34Speaker 2: from his car following an altercation with a teammate during
- 2:37Speaker 2: practice last week, a source confirmed to NFL Network and
- 2:41Speaker 2: Mike Garofalo. The Titans released Elliott Tuesday citing an undisclosed, quote,
- 2:46Speaker 2: incident that occurred at the team facility last week. A
- 2:50Speaker 2: source confirmed to Garofalo that after a dispute with Offensive
- 2:53Speaker 2: 11 J.C. Latham, Jordan Elliott went to his parked car
- 2:56Speaker 2: in the player's parking lot next to the facility to
- 2:58Speaker 2: get a gun. The gun never left Elliott's parking lot.
- 3:03Speaker 2: And the source told Garofalo, turns out a teammate apparently
- 3:06Speaker 2: defused the situation before that got absolutely ugly.
- 3:10Speaker 7: What was going on there?
- 3:11Speaker 2: That's... He's unemployed right now. There you go. The NFBA
- 3:16Speaker 2: season began yesterday with three tip-off games. I don't know
- 3:18Speaker 2: if you even noticed that or care. The world champion
- 3:21Speaker 2: Knicks lost at home to LeBron James and his Philadelphia 76ers.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Detroit beat Boston. Oklahoma City beat San Antonio. The World
- 3:29Speaker 2: Series will begin Friday night. Tampa Bay Rays versus the
- 3:32Speaker 2: Milwaukee Brewers. That's the first World Series matchup since 1980,
- 3:36Speaker 2: the Royals and Phillies, that both teams have yet to
- 3:39Speaker 2: win at all. The WNBA Finals Game 3 is tonight.
- 3:43Speaker 2: The Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries are tied
- 3:45Speaker 2: at a game each. In college football, Ohio State coach
- 3:48Speaker 2: Ryan Day says the third-ranked Buckeyes are planning for injured
- 3:51Speaker 2: quarterback Julian Sayan to miss the rest of the season.
- 3:55Speaker 2: The Washington Huskies are off this week. That's more time
- 3:57Speaker 2: for coach Jed Fish to keep everyone, including next week's
- 3:59Speaker 2: opponent Nebraska, guessing on who will start at quarterback for
- 4:02Speaker 2: UW next. And Jessamyn's Washington State Cougars host 21st-ranked Boise
- 4:07Speaker 2: State 3 p.m. Saturday at Martin Stadium.
- 4:08Speaker 7: It's going to be a challenge. I'm excited to see
- 4:10Speaker 7: what Eshelman can do in that situation.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Another start for the redshirt freshman, Eshelman. They look good
- 4:17Speaker 2: in Oregon State. Now on with the Wednesday show. Good morning.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Happy Monday. Well, no, it's Wednesday. Hump Day here at
- 4:23Speaker 2: Seahawks Headquarters. I don't know what day it is.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Well, it's usually better to assume it's earlier in the
- 4:27Speaker 5: week than later.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 4:29Speaker 7: Makes you happier.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Getting disappointed. That's right. Yeah. Jess and McIntyre's back at
- 4:33Speaker 2: Elliott Bay Studios in Seattle. I'm down here at Seahawks Headquarters.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Greg Bell, as I am every Wednesday and Thursday covering
- 4:40Speaker 2: the Seahawks. They are 3-3. Somewhat of a pivotal game here.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Not only this, but then they have Chicago coming in
- 4:48Speaker 2: as well. And the Heels undefeated Kansas City. And the
- 4:52Speaker 2: Kenneth Walkers come in on Sunday night football at Lumen Field.
- 4:56Speaker 2: And the Seahawks are practicing. They're meeting this morning. They're
- 5:00Speaker 2: meeting right next to me now in the main team room.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And a full day of practice and preparing. They had
- 5:05Speaker 2: an off day yesterday, the mandatory Tuesday day off from
- 5:08Speaker 2: the players' agreement with the league. And then they go
- 5:12Speaker 2: into full work starting today. Good morning, ma'am.
- 5:16Speaker 7: Good morning. Good morning.
- 5:18Speaker 5: How is it out there? Because I woke up with
- 5:21Speaker 5: sun and I drove through a cloud the rest of
- 5:23Speaker 5: the time on my way. Well, I woke up before
- 5:25Speaker 5: the sun came up, but up in my neck of
- 5:27Speaker 5: the woods, it was not a cloud.
- 5:30Speaker 7: This morning it is.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yes. Seattle, this time of year, the city proper Seattle,
- 5:35Speaker 2: as we know, those of us have lived here in October,
- 5:38Speaker 2: warm afternoons and sun and then cold nights, meaning the
- 5:41Speaker 2: fog burn off like after 12 or one o'clock in
- 5:44Speaker 2: the afternoon. This is like, someone told me this was
- 5:47Speaker 2: the driest October ever on record. I mean, we've only
- 5:52Speaker 2: had a couple days of light rain here.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yeah, we got, the leaves change and everything. I always
- 5:59Speaker 5: enjoy fall. It's my favorite season. I was a fall
- 6:01Speaker 5: sport athlete and I always loved football. And I just remind,
- 6:07Speaker 5: like I'm reminded that it's the best season on earth.
- 6:10Speaker 7: And when we actually get it, I love it.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Do you think it's the best season? Yes. I love summer, but.
- 6:16Speaker 5: You know, I worked through every summer, so I didn't
- 6:20Speaker 5: really enjoy summer the way that other people do, but
- 6:23Speaker 5: I just love the fall because it's still, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 5: tolerable when it comes to the weather, when it is
- 6:29Speaker 5: like it is right now.
- 6:31Speaker 2: What's Pullman up to? Is it frozen yet? It usually
- 6:33Speaker 2: freezes and snows by the Halloween.
- 6:36Speaker 7: No, they're doing great.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we've had good weather over there in Pullman on
- 6:39Speaker 2: the east side. If you're joining us on the Palouse,
- 6:41Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre, of course, is the Washington State football sideline
- 6:45Speaker 2: reporter for Washington State football. She'll be doing that Saturday
- 6:48Speaker 2: afternoon when Boise State comes calling to the 1-6 Cougs.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Did you see the story? You saw Legree. Jesse Legree,
- 6:56Speaker 2: the phenom freshman wide receiver at Oregon State. You saw
- 6:59Speaker 2: him up close on the field at Reeser Stadium.
- 7:01Speaker 7: Yeah, he's good.
- 7:03Speaker 2: He's like seven weeks in a row he's been the
- 7:05Speaker 2: Pac-12 freshman of the week. He's one of the leading
- 7:07Speaker 2: receivers in the country as a freshman. Did you see
- 7:10Speaker 2: his father and what they're pulling this week? Oregon State
- 7:13Speaker 2: has a vibe.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Right. Yeah.
- 7:16Speaker 2: His father has announced that there is going to be a, quote,
- 7:19Speaker 2: decision day on Friday for his son, Jesse Legree. Mm-hmm.
- 7:25Speaker 2: What the hell kind of decision could he be making
- 7:27Speaker 2: in the middle of his college football season?
- 7:29Speaker 7: He really shouldn't be doing it. Did you see what
- 7:30Speaker 7: Chad Johnson did, though?
- 7:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:32Speaker 5: Yes.
- 7:32Speaker 2: So go ahead and explain to Chad Johnson what the
- 7:35Speaker 2: chick is doing.
- 7:36Speaker 5: Well, he offered $ 2 million as an alum, $ 2 million
- 7:39Speaker 5: to keep him there.
- 7:40Speaker 7: But why is that talked about in the middle of
- 7:42Speaker 7: the season?
- 7:43Speaker 2: Right. Right. That's the point. Jamarcus Shepard, the coach of
- 7:47Speaker 2: Oregon State, Ocho Cinco, Chad Johnson, former Oregon State Beaver,
- 7:51Speaker 2: has offered $ 2 million in asking the Oregon State football
- 7:54Speaker 2: program and Jamarcus Shepard, the coach, to match it, to
- 7:58Speaker 2: get $ 4 million to keep Legree at Oregon State. To
- 8:03Speaker 2: keep LaGrietta, he's only played for a month of college football.
- 8:07Speaker 7: But it shouldn't even be a question at this point.
- 8:10Speaker 2: It shouldn't be.
- 8:11Speaker 7: And why is his father saying decision day? Could he
- 8:15Speaker 7: leave right now?
- 8:16Speaker 2: Of course he could. The way college football's rules are,
- 8:19Speaker 2: you could leave into LSU. Mississippi had players leave into
- 8:23Speaker 2: LSU in the middle of the college football playoff last year.
- 8:26Speaker 2: It's ridiculous what we're at here.
- 8:28Speaker 5: I know.
- 8:28Speaker 2: A decision day for a freshman who's played six college games,
- 8:33Speaker 2: one month of college football, has a decision day. His
- 8:36Speaker 2: decision was to commit to Oregon State football for at
- 8:38Speaker 2: least a year. At least. You can't even do that? No.
- 8:41Speaker 2: You can't even do one year? One season?
- 8:44Speaker 5: This also sounds like sometimes people speak out of turn,
- 8:47Speaker 5: and family members and non-agent agents for these guys, these
- 8:51Speaker 5: NIL agents who aren't actually agents, will sometimes– get ahead
- 8:55Speaker 5: of things.
- 8:56Speaker 7: We saw what happened to DeMond Williams last year.
- 8:59Speaker 5: And I think that sometimes they just maybe that is
- 9:04Speaker 5: not what the Gris was exactly planning on.
- 9:07Speaker 7: I have no idea.
- 9:08Speaker 5: But sometimes people do speak out of term and I'm
- 9:11Speaker 5: not being defensive or accusatory, but we don't know what's
- 9:15Speaker 5: going to happen. Decision day. Could he start on another
- 9:19Speaker 5: team at this point of the season?
- 9:21Speaker 2: Well, no, the transfer port is closed until the end
- 9:23Speaker 2: of the year. But end of the calendar year, not
- 9:26Speaker 2: the end of the season. There's something else wrong with that.
- 9:29Speaker 2: But he can commit to another school. He could claim
- 9:31Speaker 2: he's not going to play so he doesn't get injured,
- 9:33Speaker 2: so he doesn't risk his millions of dollars that he's
- 9:35Speaker 2: going to get promised by LSU or somebody else. It's ugly.
- 9:39Speaker 2: It's dirty.
- 9:40Speaker 7: At this point of his career, a freshman.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah, how about we teach an 18-year-old about commitment? And
- 9:46Speaker 2: about following through on some accountability of your commitment and saying, okay,
- 9:50Speaker 2: I committed to at least one season at Oregon State. Now,
- 9:52Speaker 2: even one season seems ridiculous, but a month of half
- 9:56Speaker 2: a season? Go on.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Making a decision, he's going to make an announcement that
- 10:01Speaker 2: he's staying at Oregon State. It's a bye week for
- 10:06Speaker 2: the Beavers, yes. But why would you make this a
- 10:09Speaker 2: distraction about yourself over your team in the middle of
- 10:11Speaker 2: the season?
- 10:12Speaker 7: Especially with Boise being so good.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Exactly. And Next up for Oregon State next week is
- 10:19Speaker 2: Fresno State inside the new reformed Pac-12. Five wins in
- 10:24Speaker 2: a row for Oregon State, and they're dealing with this.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Legree is the first receiver in college football this season
- 10:30Speaker 2: to have 1,000 yards, and he did it in five,
- 10:32Speaker 2: six games. And, yes, all of that's true, but how
- 10:36Speaker 2: about just a commitment and an accountability to what you
- 10:41Speaker 2: committed to for at least a season this Without any
- 10:44Speaker 2: of this nonsense, whether it's her father doing it rogue
- 10:47Speaker 2: on his own or not, college football.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Well, like you said, it used to be formative years
- 10:55Speaker 5: where you actually learned about commitment.
- 10:57Speaker 7: Brotherhood, being a good teammate.
- 11:00Speaker 5: It was, you know, between the ages of 18 to 22, 23.
- 11:04Speaker 7: You usually learn about that, and then you go on
- 11:06Speaker 7: from there.
- 11:07Speaker 5: And that used to be the sanctity of college sports,
- 11:10Speaker 5: and football is the biggest moneymaker. Yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 2: The second fail of the day I want to bring up,
- 11:16Speaker 2: did you see the Brewers and their timeless ticket promotion?
- 11:20Speaker 7: I did not catch that one.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Okay. The Brewers, of course, are in the World Series.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Back in 2015, they had a timeless ticket promotion that
- 11:29Speaker 2: said for $ 1, 000 per ticket, you can buy advanced rights
- 11:34Speaker 2: to any World Series that the Brewers may ever get
- 11:36Speaker 2: into from 2015 on. Well, 11 years later, the Brewers
- 11:40Speaker 2: are in the World Series. And guess what? The people
- 11:44Speaker 2: who bought $ 1, 000 tickets, timeless tickets, 11 years ago are
- 11:48Speaker 2: coming to collect. Yeah. And the written language was, well,
- 11:54Speaker 2: let me tell you. This is from ABC 30 television
- 11:57Speaker 2: in Milwaukee. Two Kenosha brothers, Kenosha, Wisconsin, who paid $ 1, 000
- 12:01Speaker 2: each for a Milwaukee Brewers, quote, timeless ticket more than
- 12:05Speaker 2: a decade ago, say the team isn't fully honoring the
- 12:08Speaker 2: promise that came with it. The chance to sit in
- 12:10Speaker 2: the best available seats for a game as big as
- 12:12Speaker 2: the World Series. Kevin and Kyle Deaton of Kenosha, Wisconsin,
- 12:16Speaker 2: say they were stunned when they saw the seating options
- 12:19Speaker 2: made available to timeless ticket holders last week by the Brewers,
- 12:22Speaker 2: terrace-level seats, or standing room only priced at or below
- 12:28Speaker 2: what the two brothers paid for their timeless ticket in 2015.
- 12:32Speaker 2: The tickets, according to the information card the Brewers sent out, quote,
- 12:35Speaker 2: may be redeemed for the best available seat location subject
- 12:38Speaker 2: to ticket availability at the time of redemption. The brothers
- 12:42Speaker 2: argue that the Brewers are not living up to that language.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Kyle Deaton said, ABC 30 TV in Milwaukee, quote, when
- 12:49Speaker 2: you promise somebody the best seat available and you give
- 12:52Speaker 2: them pretty much the worst seats that you have in
- 12:53Speaker 2: the whole stadium, I would say, no, they're not honoring it.
- 12:57Speaker 2: So the Brewers responded yesterday and they said, quote, we erred.
- 13:05Speaker 2: On the logistics of fulfilling time with ticket requests for
- 13:08Speaker 2: World Series games, limiting fans to the 400 level and
- 13:11Speaker 2: standing room tickets. Quote, prior to the deadline, several hundred
- 13:14Speaker 2: fans indicated intention or deemed their timeless ticket for a
- 13:16Speaker 2: World Series game. Yeah, imagine that. We subsequently erred in
- 13:21Speaker 2: our internal communications on the logistics of filling the request.
- 13:25Speaker 2: While we are able to accommodate all with seats, we
- 13:27Speaker 2: received feedback that some were unhappy with their seat locations. Clearly,
- 13:31Speaker 2: even with extraordinary limitations on available seats, We did not
- 13:34Speaker 2: live up to the spirit of the program, and we've
- 13:36Speaker 2: been working through a resolution. So here's the resolution. We
- 13:40Speaker 2: are happy to say that all these fans who applied
- 13:42Speaker 2: prior to the deadline about these timeless tickets will be
- 13:44Speaker 2: contacted with a positive update. They can retain their World
- 13:48Speaker 2: Series ticket for this year. Remember, that's in the upper
- 13:50Speaker 2: deck or standing room only. Plus retain their timeless ticket
- 13:53Speaker 2: for redemption for another game in any future season. We
- 13:57Speaker 2: regret our mistake and look forward to welcoming you into
- 13:59Speaker 2: American Family Field for their World Series experience. So you
- 14:05Speaker 2: could go to any other game since we screwed up
- 14:07Speaker 2: this World Series experience. You know what this is. The
- 14:11Speaker 2: Brewers know they can buy and can sell far more
- 14:17Speaker 2: lucrative seats than $ 1, 000 for these games. And the secondary
- 14:21Speaker 2: market and the Brewers and their MLB has a ticket
- 14:25Speaker 2: master deal and all the whole, it's money. And they
- 14:28Speaker 2: know that they forgot or didn't care Back in 2015
- 14:33Speaker 2: when they were collecting $ 1, 000 each. But now they care
- 14:36Speaker 2: when those tickets will probably go for two, three, four,
- 14:38Speaker 2: five times that. Incredible that money is the ill of everything,
- 14:45Speaker 2: is it not?
- 14:45Speaker 5: Yep.
- 14:46Speaker 7: Yeah, that's really bad, though. I'm sorry.
- 14:48Speaker 5: This is over 10 years ago that you offered this
- 14:50Speaker 5: to your fans. You put that money in your coffers
- 14:55Speaker 5: for 10 years.
- 14:56Speaker 7: You made money on that money.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Exactly. They put it in a savings account or escrow
- 15:01Speaker 2: and got interest on it. Exactly. Right. Now they're going
- 15:05Speaker 2: to make more money by selling the seats they were
- 15:07Speaker 2: supposed to give those people. You have to honor that, man.
- 15:08Speaker 7: You have to honor that. That's pretty bad.
- 15:13Speaker 5: And then, yeah, they said there were some internal communications
- 15:16Speaker 5: issues on the logistics of fulfilling the request.
- 15:20Speaker 7: How are you not ahead of this?
- 15:22Speaker 2: That's HR speaking through a rosary. On the show today,
- 15:26Speaker 2: Coach Mike McDonald says the Seahawks are more closely aligned
- 15:30Speaker 2: now than they were during their overtime loss in Denver.
- 15:33Speaker 2: What happened? Why are they more closely aligned? Why weren't
- 15:35Speaker 2: they closely aligned then? You'll hear from the coach about
- 15:39Speaker 2: that and about Sam Donald and his frustration in Denver.
- 15:42Speaker 2: The NBA season is beginning, and the league continues to
- 15:45Speaker 2: jerk us around here in Seattle about the return of
- 15:47Speaker 2: the Sonics. No other two ways to say that. 49451,
- 15:52Speaker 2: my first question on the Tacoma Dodge text line for
- 15:54Speaker 2: the day. Did you even notice the NBA season started yesterday? Well,
- 15:58Speaker 2: I did.
- 15:59Speaker 7: I live in an NBA household.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Yes, you do.
- 16:03Speaker 5: But it is pretty personal because Mike and I are
- 16:06Speaker 5: not from here. I am very well in tune with
- 16:10Speaker 5: everything because I moved out here right after the Sonics left.
- 16:13Speaker 5: So for me, I am not as into it, but
- 16:16Speaker 5: I do appreciate him loving the sport so much. And
- 16:19Speaker 5: especially when football ends, that's when the NBA season, when
- 16:23Speaker 5: I would tune in, is usually ramping up.
- 16:27Speaker 2: I covered that trial in 2008 in the federal courthouse
- 16:29Speaker 2: on Olive and 8th. And I was there every day.
- 16:34Speaker 2: And I knew that the city of Seattle was going
- 16:37Speaker 2: to win that case. and that the Sonics would have
- 16:39Speaker 2: to play through the end of their lease at Key
- 16:41Speaker 2: Arena in Seattle Center. And I was, the day before
- 16:45Speaker 2: the 4th of July, or July 2nd, I think it was,
- 16:48Speaker 2: two days before the 4th of July, I was there
- 16:51Speaker 2: when the city caved and settled the lawsuit and let
- 16:54Speaker 2: Clay Bennett run free to Oklahoma. And I'll never forget that.
- 16:59Speaker 2: And everyone who's lived in Seattle way before I moved
- 17:02Speaker 2: here in the mid-90s will never forget it either. And
- 17:05Speaker 2: that's why we don't like the NBA. And the fact
- 17:08Speaker 2: that Adam Silver is still jerking around the city and telling, well,
- 17:12Speaker 2: it's not... guarantee now that Seattle is going to get
- 17:14Speaker 2: a team. And what about Mexico city trying to drive
- 17:17Speaker 2: up the price?
- 17:17Speaker 5: Yes.
- 17:18Speaker 7: At a hundred percent is driving up the price.
- 17:19Speaker 5: Like you said, the money is of everything, but, but
- 17:24Speaker 5: the thing is the people here are already sick of
- 17:27Speaker 5: it and almost done with the NBA, not as angry
- 17:31Speaker 5: as they used to be, but it is, if you
- 17:34Speaker 5: really think that a team is going to be here,
- 17:36Speaker 5: wouldn't you maybe not say it's a lock, but don't
- 17:39Speaker 5: say it's not a lock.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Oh, And the shame of it, of course, is how
- 17:44Speaker 2: great of a basketball legacy we have in this town
- 17:48Speaker 2: to this day. I heard Ian talk about this yesterday.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Metro League basketball games in the city, the Kinko games
- 17:54Speaker 2: in the suburbs, the South Sound, Isaiah Thomas' history, Bellarmine Prep,
- 18:00Speaker 2: on and on. Western Washington and Eastern Washington, Spokane for
- 18:03Speaker 2: that matter, hoops is huge to this day. And the
- 18:07Speaker 2: basketball legacy here, back to the Sonics and the 79 championship. And, yeah.
- 18:14Speaker 2: we deserve better, to say the least. And here we
- 18:16Speaker 2: are waiting for the whims of NBA owners to drive
- 18:18Speaker 2: up expansion costs to maximize their revenue for their pockets.
- 18:22Speaker 2: 11 o'clock, we're going to go live to Kansas City.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I'm going to talk to Sam McDowell, a friend of mine.
- 18:27Speaker 2: He's been covering the Chiefs for years for the Kansas
- 18:29Speaker 2: City Star, calling us for them now. I'm going to
- 18:31Speaker 2: ask him if Andy Reid can keep up playing and
- 18:34Speaker 2: running Kenneth Walker this much, like 75-80% of the time,
- 18:37Speaker 2: all offensive plays for the Chiefs. We'll talk more about
- 18:41Speaker 2: the Seahawks undefeated opponent Sunday night at Lumen field, 1130.
- 18:44Speaker 2: We'll read back your text on the four, nine, four, five,
- 18:46Speaker 2: one to come out. It's text line and talk backs
- 18:48Speaker 2: in the I heart radio app or our website, nine
- 18:50Speaker 2: to three KGR.com. Well, you can find my stories written
- 18:54Speaker 2: form on the Seahawks as they prepare for the chiefs.
- 18:57Speaker 2: 1135 factor fiction brought to you by the lucky Eagle
- 19:00Speaker 2: casino and hotel. My pick today at 1135 for your
- 19:04Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000. And Ian is going to join us.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Talk about his game last night. What do you like
- 19:09Speaker 2: about the call and the finish and, what he's got
- 19:11Speaker 2: on his show 12 until three today, that's all coming
- 19:15Speaker 2: up from the Seahawks headquarters here in Renton. And at noon,
- 19:18Speaker 2: right at high noon, Mike McDonald will have his weekly
- 19:21Speaker 2: Wednesday press conference. And then usually they bring in Cooper
- 19:23Speaker 2: cup and Leonard Williams. Those are the staples on Wednesday.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Sam Darnold talks on Thursday, but yeah, the NBA started my,
- 19:32Speaker 2: my friend, Chris kid. I know he's fired up about that,
- 19:35Speaker 2: but me, I don't, I, You're not into it?
- 19:39Speaker 7: No.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Now, when the Sonics come back, I'll be in on
- 19:43Speaker 2: the Sonics. And I'll cover them and be out there,
- 19:45Speaker 2: of course. But in the meantime, just tell me when
- 19:49Speaker 2: they're here. In fact, it's gotten to the point where
- 19:51Speaker 2: I won't believe it until the ball's in the air.
- 19:53Speaker 5: Same.
- 19:53Speaker 2: I mean, until it actually starts.
- 19:55Speaker 5: I'm just going back a decade ago when we were
- 19:57Speaker 5: all at the Chris Hansen rallies downtown in Pioneer Square.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 20:02Speaker 7: Thought he was the one.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Up next, from Seahawks headquarters here, Mike McDonald talking about
- 20:10Speaker 2: a breakthrough, that we are, quote, definitely more aligned as
- 20:13Speaker 2: a team after their mini-buy and their loss in Denver
- 20:16Speaker 2: last week. You'll hear how they got over their long
- 20:18Speaker 2: weekend off and what they talked about, who they talked with,
- 20:21Speaker 2: and about Sam Darnold's frustration next from Seahawks headquarters at
- 20:24Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back to Seahawk Headquarters. It's Wednesday. I
- 20:52Speaker 2: almost said Monday. It's Wednesday.
- 20:54Speaker 7: You freaked someone out on the text line.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I know.
- 20:56Speaker 3: I see that.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I hope now they're pleasantly surprised the week is almost
- 21:01Speaker 2: half over. The Seahawks are preparing for the unbeaten Chiefs
- 21:04Speaker 2: Sunday night football 515 at Lumen Field or 520, whatever
- 21:08Speaker 2: they do, kickoffs on Sunday night at Lumen Field. The
- 21:12Speaker 2: NFL is going to Paris for the first time for
- 21:15Speaker 2: a regular season game this week, and that might not
- 21:17Speaker 2: be the perfect place to be right now. The Saints
- 21:20Speaker 2: and the Steelers are playing in Paris Sunday morning, our time, 630.
- 21:24Speaker 2: They're telling fans arriving from the States for the game
- 21:28Speaker 2: in Paris that the Louvre is closed, curfews in the
- 21:32Speaker 2: city are in effect, and in game day, stay close
- 21:36Speaker 2: to the stadium, go directly from the train station to
- 21:38Speaker 2: the stadium, and then back to the train station. Do
- 21:40Speaker 2: not wander through neighborhoods of Paris. Central Paris, Notre Dame,
- 21:45Speaker 2: and the Eiffel Tower are open. However, there will be
- 21:48Speaker 2: metro and road closures. Metro, the train system in Paris.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I've used it. Protesters may or may not circle the
- 21:54Speaker 2: Eiffel Tower. They have done that in the past when
- 21:57Speaker 2: they protest. There have been riots in Paris now for
- 21:59Speaker 2: the last week or so. They had a PSG Barcelona
- 22:03Speaker 2: Champions League match there yesterday warning fans about the unrest
- 22:07Speaker 2: that's going on in the country of France and the
- 22:11Speaker 2: capital city of Paris. And now the NFL is parachuting
- 22:14Speaker 2: in for its first regular season game in the French
- 22:17Speaker 2: capital amid riots. And the Saints and Steelers are going
- 22:21Speaker 2: to probably be sequestered in their hotels for the entire
- 22:24Speaker 2: time they are here. That's the same thing that's happened
- 22:27Speaker 2: in Mexico City when the NFL has played games there.
- 22:30Speaker 2: The 49ers and the Minnesota Vikings are going to play,
- 22:33Speaker 2: the two current NFC underbeatens, by the way, are going
- 22:37Speaker 2: to play in Mexico City next month. And I know
- 22:40Speaker 2: friends that have covered the Raiders, the 49ers, and games
- 22:43Speaker 2: in Mexico City. And the NFL has locked those teams
- 22:47Speaker 2: in the hotel. They go out for maybe practice, and
- 22:50Speaker 2: that's it. Meals brought in. They're afraid of crime in
- 22:53Speaker 2: Mexico City, and they're afraid of players and people wandering
- 22:56Speaker 2: in Mexico City streets. Yet here's Adam Silver saying he's
- 23:00Speaker 2: using Mexico City as leverage to try to get the
- 23:03Speaker 2: Seattle price up. I mean, it's ridiculous.
- 23:05Speaker 7: You're going to put a whole team there?
- 23:09Speaker 2: Anyway, but that's what the Paris situation with the Steelers
- 23:12Speaker 2: and Saints reminded me of. Back here on home soil,
- 23:16Speaker 2: the Seahawks had a mini-bye last week. That's the flip
- 23:19Speaker 2: side plus to having to play a Thursday game after
- 23:22Speaker 2: a Sunday game is you get 10 days off. Well,
- 23:24Speaker 2: 10 days between, not off, but 10 days between until
- 23:27Speaker 2: the next game. The players were off this past weekend.
- 23:30Speaker 2: From Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, they didn't do anything. They
- 23:33Speaker 2: weren't on the field, but the coaches were in the building,
- 23:36Speaker 2: especially Friday and Saturday. And then they met with the
- 23:40Speaker 2: players after the mini break. Mike McDonald says that they
- 23:43Speaker 2: are more closely aligned now than they were during the
- 23:47Speaker 2: overtime loss in Denver. How did that happen? Why did
- 23:51Speaker 2: that happen? You'll hear how they got there next when
- 23:54Speaker 2: we hear from Mike McDonald. And you'll hear about my
- 23:57Speaker 2: questions to the coach about Sam Darnold and his frustration
- 24:00Speaker 2: that he obviously showed after the game with two more interceptions,
- 24:02Speaker 2: seven in the four games since he's come back. off
- 24:06Speaker 2: that glute injury. This was Mike McDonald talking about where
- 24:08Speaker 2: the Seahawks, what ground they covered on the mini-bye weekend off.
- 24:12Speaker 6: You mentioned that you were going to have a conversation
- 24:14Speaker 6: with Sam and Jake and Brian Fleury.
- 24:17Speaker 2: That conversation happened, and was Cooper Cup part of that
- 24:19Speaker 2: conversation as well?
- 24:21Speaker 4: It wasn't just one conversation. We had a lot of conversations.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Over the last few days.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Coop's a part of that. Coop's a tremendous asset for us,
- 24:33Speaker 4: so We want all those guys to feel like we're
- 24:37Speaker 4: all part of the solution and how we're going to
- 24:39Speaker 4: move forward. It's been great.
- 24:42Speaker 8: How do you feel those conversations went compared to what
- 24:44Speaker 8: you expected?
- 24:45Speaker 4: I think what we've told the team today is the
- 24:52Speaker 4: games are so emotional. You leave a game and I
- 24:58Speaker 4: guess the emotions do vary sometimes from week to week
- 25:01Speaker 4: based off the game. I think I think where my
- 25:04Speaker 4: frustration lie was just, I think we talked about this
- 25:06Speaker 4: after the game, was just the identity of us and
- 25:09Speaker 4: what it feels like, Seahawks football, and that feeling wasn't there.
- 25:14Speaker 4: And so you have frustration, but you're frustrated also without
- 25:20Speaker 4: the facts and without the objectivity behind everything. So I
- 25:24Speaker 4: think that's what makes the problem-solving process.
- 25:32Speaker 7: Interesting.
- 25:32Speaker 4: It makes me, that's part of the reason we like
- 25:34Speaker 4: being coaches because that's part of our process. So I'm
- 25:40Speaker 4: proud of the days, you know, the couple of days
- 25:41Speaker 4: work that we put in. I think we had some,
- 25:44Speaker 4: some honest conversations and honest process. I think we're, I
- 25:49Speaker 4: think we're definitely more aligned as a team than we
- 25:51Speaker 4: were a few days ago. And I'm excited about where
- 25:54Speaker 4: we can go, honestly. But, you know, we've really had
- 25:57Speaker 4: one good days worth of work up to this point.
- 26:00Speaker 4: So it's, it's just a matter of falling through and
- 26:03Speaker 4: making sure we're hitting the checkpoints on a daily basis,
- 26:06Speaker 4: just like it was before. Um, but, uh, but it
- 26:11Speaker 4: was definitely, I think it was definitely a couple of
- 26:12Speaker 4: days like well-served. So, uh, I think it's cause for
- 26:16Speaker 4: excitement on where we can go.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Not being where you want it to be.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Is it as simple as the turnovers or is there
- 26:21Speaker 2: more to it than that?
- 26:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Again, I think, I think when you're, when you look
- 26:25Speaker 4: at like, Hey, there's line items of throughout all three
- 26:28Speaker 4: phases of our team that we want to get better at. Well,
- 26:32Speaker 4: you know, those are, those are symptoms of things that were,
- 26:36Speaker 4: are within our control that we can, we can be better,
- 26:38Speaker 4: you know? So like the example I like to use
- 26:41Speaker 4: is tackling. It's like, well, we're not tackling well. Well,
- 26:43Speaker 4: not because the guys don't want to tackle. It's probably
- 26:46Speaker 4: because there's too much space. It's probably because there's a
- 26:49Speaker 4: fundamental that maybe we could.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Have worked better.
- 26:51Speaker 4: The guy could have applied better to that type of situation,
- 26:54Speaker 4: or maybe it's more effort coming from a certain angle,
- 26:57Speaker 4: or maybe it's an angle we need to take. So
- 26:58Speaker 4: it's more fundamental things that we want to be able to, um,
- 27:02Speaker 4: you know, like apply in those situations that we can hit.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Those are things that we can handle here throughout the week.
- 27:08Speaker 4: So they get, we feel like our players are better
- 27:10Speaker 4: trained to go tackle better, which if we tackle great,
- 27:13Speaker 4: then you're going to, everyone's going to say, Hey man,
- 27:15Speaker 4: they're playing great Seahawk defense. Well, it's because our fundamentals
- 27:18Speaker 4: are on point, you know? So hopefully that kind of
- 27:22Speaker 4: paints you a picture about what we feel like can
- 27:28Speaker 4: slow down the takeaway issue.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Are there things like schematically as well that you feel
- 27:32Speaker 1: like you need to, I don't know, change or kind
- 27:34Speaker 1: of discuss on this as well?
- 27:35Speaker 4: I think the short answer is yes. The long answer
- 27:42Speaker 4: is are we running bad plays? No, the plays are fine.
- 27:47Speaker 4: It's how we get to the plays. It's how we
- 27:50Speaker 4: run the plays. It's how we choose the plays, how
- 27:54Speaker 4: we execute the plays, those type of things.
- 27:56Speaker 2: We all noticed the results on the field, but Sam Darnold,
- 27:59Speaker 2: since he's come back, his leadership or the locker room,
- 28:01Speaker 2: how do you assess that since his injury?
- 28:04Speaker 4: Sam's been great. All the things that we said that
- 28:09Speaker 4: we were always impressed by Sam was his consistency and
- 28:11Speaker 4: his attitude.
- 28:12Speaker 5: And his ball player attitude.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Every day, same guy. Sam's been very consistent. He's been
- 28:23Speaker 4: trying to be part of the conversations of us on
- 28:26Speaker 4: where we can go. So he's been, he's been great.
- 28:28Speaker 2: He was wearing it pretty heavy with us in Denver
- 28:30Speaker 2: after the game. Did you notice any frustration or difference
- 28:33Speaker 2: in him than any other game?
- 28:35Speaker 4: I think we're all heavy and frustrated.
- 28:38Speaker 2: That was Mike McDonald's way of saying yes. Yes. Sam
- 28:48Speaker 2: Darnold was frustrated.
- 28:49Speaker 7: He put himself in that group.
- 28:50Speaker 2: He did. The whole team was after the game. In Denver,
- 28:53Speaker 2: the 17-14 overtime loss. But it was interesting to hear
- 28:56Speaker 2: McDonald almost describing that the team somewhat reinvented itself on
- 29:01Speaker 2: this mini-bye by becoming more closely aligned. Last week we
- 29:06Speaker 2: talked about, before the Denver game, Jess, I think you remember,
- 29:08Speaker 2: we talked about Sam Darnold going to Brian Fleury after
- 29:12Speaker 2: the 49ers game, the loss at home, and saying, let's
- 29:15Speaker 2: go back to plays. Let's run plays that I liked
- 29:18Speaker 2: in training camp. Base foundation plays. Not opponent-specific for the Broncos.
- 29:23Speaker 2: but just base plays. And I thought they came out
- 29:26Speaker 2: doing that. The first four passes were on time. As
- 29:29Speaker 2: soon as he got on his back foot throwing short,
- 29:32Speaker 2: quick outside four for four passing, the Seahawks moved down
- 29:36Speaker 2: the field. They end up drive stalling deeper in Broncos territory,
- 29:39Speaker 2: and Jason Myers kicked a field goal for an early
- 29:41Speaker 2: 3-0 lead. And then after that, it seemed like that
- 29:45Speaker 2: didn't happen anymore. He was far less decisive for the
- 29:48Speaker 2: rest of the game than after that first drive. And
- 29:50Speaker 2: it looked to me like they were improvisational, and it
- 29:54Speaker 2: was the opposite of decisive and on time in the
- 29:57Speaker 2: plays that he was most comfortable with. He ended up
- 30:00Speaker 2: getting hit 17 times in that game, sacked five times.
- 30:04Speaker 2: He's been sacked 10 times the last two weeks. And
- 30:08Speaker 2: we've already drawn the direct line, Jessamyn, that that's because
- 30:10Speaker 2: of the lack of a running game and running backs
- 30:12Speaker 2: who can get to the holes.
- 30:14Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, that's clearly what the issue is.
- 30:17Speaker 5: And, you know, the offensive line is put on skate
- 30:20Speaker 5: sometimes just because the running game can't get going. And
- 30:24Speaker 5: obviously that's a symbiotic relationship. when it comes to those fronts.
- 30:28Speaker 5: But yeah, it is definitely clearly something that has helped
- 30:33Speaker 5: Sam Darnold in the past that he doesn't quite have
- 30:35Speaker 5: right now.
- 30:37Speaker 2: He doesn't. And is Zach Charbonnet's return going to fix that?
- 30:41Speaker 2: I'm not so sure this week. He's going to practice
- 30:46Speaker 2: full go in the offense today. Charbonnet is scheduled to anyway.
- 30:50Speaker 2: For the first time since mid-January, since that injury in
- 30:54Speaker 2: the divisional playoff game, against the 49ers, he has not
- 30:57Speaker 2: been with the offense since that game. That's what, nine
- 31:00Speaker 2: months ago, over nine months ago, nine months and a
- 31:03Speaker 2: week to be exact. So he can't be a 20
- 31:07Speaker 2: carry guy on Sunday night against the Chiefs. So he's
- 31:11Speaker 2: going to be a partial answer to their running game woes.
- 31:14Speaker 2: But even Charbonnet, if you think about it, is not
- 31:17Speaker 2: the quintessential outside back. He's not the decisive one cut
- 31:21Speaker 2: and go. He's not quick to the hole as quick
- 31:24Speaker 2: as Kenneth Walker is. and was for this team not
- 31:27Speaker 2: as quick as Jadarian Price had already showed in his
- 31:30Speaker 2: three games before he went on injured reserve. So even
- 31:33Speaker 2: when Charbonnet comes back, that may not be the total
- 31:36Speaker 2: answer either. Jessamyn, it's obvious, their answer was Jadarian Price.
- 31:41Speaker 2: They went full lock, stock, and barrel all in on
- 31:44Speaker 2: Price as being the heir to Kenneth Walker, and he's
- 31:47Speaker 2: on injured reserve, Price is, at least until November 2nd
- 31:51Speaker 2: when they play the Chicago Bears. And that's where they stand.
- 31:55Speaker 2: This was not the plan to have Emmanuel Wilson plotting
- 31:58Speaker 2: short yardage back 220 pounds as your outside zone rusher
- 32:02Speaker 2: to get to the hole in the rushing lane quickly.
- 32:05Speaker 2: It was not the design to have Abe Lucas and
- 32:08Speaker 2: the right guard, who has been Christian Haynes and rookie
- 32:11Speaker 2: Bo Stevens and Anthony Bradford's absence, and the center, Jalen Sundell.
- 32:16Speaker 2: To the right side, when they run stretch plays in
- 32:18Speaker 2: outside zone, the plan wasn't for those guys to hold
- 32:21Speaker 2: their blocks or drive their guys five yards off the ball.
- 32:24Speaker 2: It was to get in the way, to somewhat mirror
- 32:27Speaker 2: and wall off defenders for a short period of time
- 32:30Speaker 2: that an outside back, Jadarian Price, would have the speed
- 32:33Speaker 2: to then get through so you don't have to hold
- 32:34Speaker 2: your block very long. That's where the running game has failed.
- 32:38Speaker 2: They don't have a running back fast enough to get
- 32:41Speaker 2: outside and get through that rushing lane that outside zone
- 32:44Speaker 2: is supposed to hold. Think Terrell Davis and the Denver
- 32:49Speaker 2: Broncos of Mike Shanahan's offense in the 90s that won
- 32:51Speaker 2: two Super Bowls. That offense is exactly what they're running here.
- 32:55Speaker 2: It's the same system. John Benton's outside zone is the
- 32:57Speaker 2: Shanahan system. And Terrell Davis made his mark and became
- 33:01Speaker 2: an NFL MVP because of the ability to get outside
- 33:05Speaker 2: and get upfield in a short amount of time with
- 33:08Speaker 2: perfect synchronicity to that zone blocking. There is no synchronicity
- 33:13Speaker 2: to Emmanuel Wilson and George Helani running through outside zone.
- 33:17Speaker 2: They're not. They're late. Their holes are closed by the
- 33:20Speaker 2: time they get there. The timing is completely off. They're
- 33:24Speaker 2: running a system for a back, two backs. They're running
- 33:29Speaker 2: a system for two backs. One is in Kansas City,
- 33:31Speaker 2: and one's on injured reserve. That's where the Seahawks' running
- 33:34Speaker 2: game is right now, and can they fix that Sunday night?
- 33:37Speaker 2: Zach Sharpen is going to help, but Jadarian Price, his
- 33:40Speaker 2: return November 2nd against Chicago is not even a sure
- 33:43Speaker 2: thing yet, but that's the first game he's eligible to
- 33:46Speaker 2: come back. That's when they'll have their back back. That
- 33:50Speaker 2: fits the system that they're running.
- 33:53Speaker 7: Yeah, well, I mean, this happens in football. It just happens.
- 33:56Speaker 5: All of a sudden, you have all your eggs in
- 33:59Speaker 5: a running back basket, and then you have to go
- 34:01Speaker 5: to the robin's eggs that you have left over.
- 34:07Speaker 7: And that is what we're seeing. That is what we're
- 34:09Speaker 7: seeing right now.
- 34:10Speaker 5: And sure, does it expose Sam Darnold as needing to
- 34:14Speaker 5: rely on a running game? It absolutely does. I watched
- 34:17Speaker 5: multiple Jets seasons where I've seen that as well. Saw
- 34:21Speaker 5: it with Mark Sanchez all the way back in the
- 34:23Speaker 5: wayback machine. And if you don't have that, well, Mike
- 34:27Speaker 5: McDonald clearly has a system. He has something that he plans.
- 34:31Speaker 5: He and John Schneider have planned this team around a
- 34:34Speaker 5: certain thing. If one of the cogs fall out of
- 34:37Speaker 5: the wheel, then you've got to paste it up.
- 34:40Speaker 7: These are Band-Aid situations.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Will that paste include a trade? November 10th is the
- 34:45Speaker 2: trade deadline, and you know that John Schneider is looking
- 34:48Speaker 2: for a running back. There's no doubt that he's calling
- 34:50Speaker 2: around the league and see who's maybe available. Najee Harris
- 34:53Speaker 2: just became available yesterday when the Giants released him, but
- 34:56Speaker 2: he's just barely a year out of an Achilles tear.
- 35:00Speaker 2: The Seahawks looked at him in the offseason and chose
- 35:03Speaker 2: not to sign him then. Then he was supposedly a
- 35:06Speaker 2: starter with the Giants when they benched Cam Scadaboo last week,
- 35:10Speaker 2: and he only got two carries. Najee Harris did early
- 35:14Speaker 2: in the game and was out of rhythm, he said,
- 35:15Speaker 2: after the game. So, yeah, the coverage bare at running back.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Are the holes there? The 4-2-5 ask on the text line.
- 35:22Speaker 2: We just explained. I think the holes are there, and
- 35:24Speaker 2: they're gone by the time the backs that they currently
- 35:25Speaker 2: have get there. They're too slow to get to those
- 35:28Speaker 2: holes that are available earlier in the play. Up next,
- 35:32Speaker 2: the NBA season started yesterday, and I'm not sure we noticed.
- 35:36Speaker 2: I know I didn't notice or care. What the NBA
- 35:39Speaker 2: is doing to Seattle. Let's talk about the NBA for
- 35:44Speaker 2: a minute. The leverage play they're trying to pull on
- 35:47Speaker 2: raising the expansion fees in the city and what Adam
- 35:51Speaker 2: Silver has been saying about this this week. That's next.
- 35:53Speaker 2: 11 o'clock, Sam McDowell will go to Kansas City. The
- 35:55Speaker 2: Kansas City star. Good friend of mine, Sam McDowell, covers
- 35:58Speaker 2: the Chiefs. He'll tell us about Kenneth Walker's big start,
- 36:00Speaker 2: how Andy Reid's using him. Patrick Mahomes' recovery from his
- 36:04Speaker 2: own knee issue from December. The Seahawks opponent Sunday night.
- 36:08Speaker 2: We'll talk that at 11 o'clock. 1135 Factor Friction, your
- 36:11Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 36:13Speaker 2: All that's coming up from Seahawks headquarters on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Welcome back. I'm at Seahawks headquarters, Greg Bell. Jess and
- 36:34Speaker 2: McIntyre is back in our LA Bay studios in downtown Seattle.
- 36:39Speaker 2: I'm out here because the Seahawks are beginning to prepare
- 36:41Speaker 2: in full for their game Sunday night against the undefeated
- 36:45Speaker 2: Kansas City Chiefs. Zach Sharbon expected to practice today. It'll
- 36:49Speaker 2: be the first time he's full go in the offense
- 36:51Speaker 2: since his reconstructive knee surgery in February and his injury
- 36:55Speaker 2: in the January playoff game against San Francisco. So that's
- 36:58Speaker 2: nine months ago since he's been in the offense. And
- 37:01Speaker 2: Anthony Bradford is now full go practicing at right guard,
- 37:06Speaker 2: designated to return to practice this week off injured reserve.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Those are two roster moves the Seahawks will make in
- 37:12Speaker 2: Charbonnet's case by tomorrow. Tomorrow is the end of Charbonnet's
- 37:15Speaker 2: 21-day practice window off of the physically unable to perform list.
- 37:19Speaker 2: By tomorrow, they have to either add him to the
- 37:21Speaker 2: active roster, which means they have to take someone off
- 37:24Speaker 2: the 53, or they declare that Charbonnet's out for the
- 37:27Speaker 2: season and won't play and stay on the physical and
- 37:30Speaker 2: able to perform list through the end of the year,
- 37:31Speaker 2: and there are no signs that's going to happen. So
- 37:34Speaker 2: tomorrow will be at least one roster move to get
- 37:37Speaker 2: Charbonnet back on the active roster to play, in Mike
- 37:40Speaker 2: McDonald's words, some capacity, unquote, Sunday night against the Kansas
- 37:45Speaker 2: City Chiefs. Yesterday there were three NBA games, regular season games,
- 37:49Speaker 2: I don't know if you noticed. One was in Detroit
- 37:53Speaker 2: in the afternoon, and they had an evening first game
- 37:56Speaker 2: in Madison Square Garden, and the world champion Knicks lost
- 37:59Speaker 2: to LeBron James in the Philadelphia 76ers. Yes, if you
- 38:01Speaker 2: haven't noticed, James is now with the 76ers. Yeah, that's
- 38:04Speaker 2: a thing. That is a thing. And then the Western
- 38:08Speaker 2: Conference Finals rematch from last season was the nightcap last night,
- 38:12Speaker 2: and San Antonio lost to Oklahoma City. Did you even notice?
- 38:18Speaker 2: I asked the question at the top of the show.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Did you notice the NBA started? Do you even care?
- 38:23Speaker 2: This city has been noticing what Adam Silver and the
- 38:27Speaker 2: NBA have been leaking out to Brian Windhorst of ESPN
- 38:30Speaker 2: and other national insiders carrying their water for him to
- 38:34Speaker 2: say that it is not a fait accompli that the
- 38:39Speaker 2: expansion teams will be awarded to Las Vegas and Seattle,
- 38:43Speaker 2: and Seattle in particular. Remember, Adam Silver has said that
- 38:46Speaker 2: by the end of this calendar year, he would have
- 38:48Speaker 2: an announcement on the expansion process and where it stands.
- 38:52Speaker 2: And now he's saying that perhaps it'll be a few
- 38:54Speaker 2: years before the teams tip off, which means it could
- 38:57Speaker 2: be the 28, 29 NBA season before new teams can play.
- 39:01Speaker 2: And Brian Winhurst of ESPN through leaks, through the league
- 39:05Speaker 2: owners and league office saying that even Mexico city is
- 39:09Speaker 2: still a possibility for expansion, which is nothing more than
- 39:12Speaker 2: a leverage of power play there to try to raise
- 39:15Speaker 2: the expansion teams cost here in Seattle and Right now,
- 39:18Speaker 2: it's been basically one roof sports and entertainment, the newly
- 39:22Speaker 2: created entity that owns the building in Seattle Senate is
- 39:26Speaker 2: NBA ready, that owns the Kraken, that would own and
- 39:30Speaker 2: operate the new nba team and that's been it as
- 39:33Speaker 2: far as viable bidders there's been that proposal to build
- 39:37Speaker 2: up in marysville and i just can't see that that
- 39:41Speaker 2: is even something that's going to gain traction at all
- 39:44Speaker 2: but in The NBA's minds and the owners' minds, the
- 39:47Speaker 2: higher that they can raise the expansion cost of the
- 39:50Speaker 2: new franchise in Seattle, the more money goes into the
- 39:54Speaker 2: other team owners' pockets. All the other team owners pocket
- 39:57Speaker 2: the expansion fees in an equal setting. 30 teams, 30
- 40:01Speaker 2: other teams in this case with two new ones coming
- 40:04Speaker 2: in would divide that pie so they want the pie
- 40:08Speaker 2: to be larger. Las Vegas... has been rumored to be
- 40:11Speaker 2: up to $ 8, $ 9, $ 10 billion in expansion fees, with
- 40:14Speaker 2: Seattle more like $ 6 or $ 7 billion. So what's a
- 40:17Speaker 2: few billion among friends to raise the expansion cost of
- 40:21Speaker 2: Seattle up toward the Las Vegas price more toward $ 10
- 40:24Speaker 2: billion so that those other owners can pocket the increase?
- 40:29Speaker 2: That's all that's going on here. In the meantime, basketball
- 40:33Speaker 2: fan Seattle has been waiting since 2008, 6,000-plus days as
- 40:37Speaker 2: He and pointed out on his show yesterday for the
- 40:39Speaker 2: return of the Sonics gets jerked around with stuff like
- 40:42Speaker 2: Mexico City and leveraging. And, well, it's not a sure thing. And, well,
- 40:46Speaker 2: we'll do it by the end of the year, maybe.
- 40:48Speaker 2: You can see why people are fed up with the NBA.
- 40:53Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly. This moving goalpost is driving everyone nuts.
- 40:57Speaker 5: And a lot of people have gone from just disdain
- 41:01Speaker 5: to I don't care.
- 41:03Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 41:03Speaker 2: And there's a lot on the text line here, the 4255.
- 41:06Speaker 2: And others saying, I quit noticing the NBA after they left,
- 41:10Speaker 2: and now the way they've jerked us around, I'm done.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 41:13Speaker 6: Yes.
- 41:14Speaker 2: And a lot of fans feel that way until the
- 41:16Speaker 2: team gets here, until they're actually playing. And then we'll
- 41:19Speaker 2: come back. The arena will be full. It'll be expensive.
- 41:22Speaker 2: And the team won't be very good to start the
- 41:25Speaker 2: NBA expansion process. But it's not good, to say the least.
- 41:33Speaker 7: No, it's really not.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 41:34Speaker 5: I mean, we're going on almost 20 years without a
- 41:38Speaker 5: team here. And it looks like it will be at
- 41:41Speaker 5: least 20 for us to get one.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Right. If they don't start now until 20, 28, and 29.
- 41:48Speaker 2: So we hear you on the text line. I hear
- 41:49Speaker 2: you in the street corners of Seattle and the barbershops
- 41:53Speaker 2: and down the grocery store by House and Roosevelt. I
- 41:56Speaker 2: get it. And I understand. And there are a lot
- 41:58Speaker 2: of us that want the NBA to come back and
- 42:00Speaker 2: want the Sonics to come back. But we're done with
- 42:03Speaker 2: the NBA as an entity. We're just done with them.
- 42:06Speaker 2: They've done so much to engender ill will that we're
- 42:11Speaker 2: done with them. And there's a 425 on the Tacoma.Tech site, 49451,
- 42:16Speaker 2: is stating that they think that One Roof is playing
- 42:19Speaker 2: this perfectly, avoiding blame and letting the simpletons in the
- 42:23Speaker 2: media run with the NBA is the bad guy narrative.
- 42:26Speaker 2: That's not a narrative here in Seattle. That's a fact.
- 42:29Speaker 2: The NBA is the bad guy because they're the ones
- 42:31Speaker 2: who orchestrated the team's move out of Seattle in 2008,
- 42:36Speaker 2: orchestrated the settlement with the city. Who would be.
- 42:38Speaker 7: The bad guy in this situation other than the NBA?
- 42:42Speaker 2: They're not the good guy.
- 42:42Speaker 7: Clay Bennett and obviously Howard Schultz are on the list.
- 42:47Speaker 2: The NBA is not the good guy here, that's for sure.
- 42:50Speaker 2: What they've done to our city and region in the
- 42:52Speaker 2: first place and now what they've done delaying the return
- 42:55Speaker 2: of the Sonics. And the whole expansion process being delayed
- 42:58Speaker 2: and so on and so on. They're extorting. They're trying
- 43:01Speaker 2: to leverage more money and make the Seattle franchise cost
- 43:05Speaker 2: more to enter the league so that the other league
- 43:07Speaker 2: owners can pocket more revenue. That's the bottom line. It's
- 43:11Speaker 2: always about money. It always is. That's what sports in
- 43:13Speaker 2: a nutshell has become. Look at college football. It's about money.
- 43:18Speaker 2: It's about money.
- 43:19Speaker 7: The ilk, like you said off the top of the show.
- 43:23Speaker 7: Every single sport now.
- 43:25Speaker 5: Television contracts, they control almost everything.
- 43:29Speaker 7: And that is where sports fall underneath.
- 43:32Speaker 2: The greed is just unchecked. I mean, honestly, it's just unchecked.
- 43:36Speaker 2: It just keeps going on and on because we still
- 43:38Speaker 2: watch it. We still pay for it. And the television
- 43:42Speaker 2: networks still sign contracts to broadcast it. Up next. A
- 43:46Speaker 2: Sunday night game is going to be broadcast on NBC, Seattle,
- 43:48Speaker 2: and Kansas City. The Chiefs are coming in 5-0. They've
- 43:51Speaker 2: had Kenneth Walker absolutely rolling, getting the ball at a
- 43:54Speaker 2: pace the Seahawks never gave him the ball over their
- 43:57Speaker 2: four years of having number nine in the backfield. Sam McDowell,
- 44:00Speaker 2: a Kansas City star, has covered the Chiefs for a decade.
- 44:03Speaker 2: He's a decade-plus. He's a National Award-winning writer, a friend
- 44:06Speaker 2: of mine. He's going to join us from Kansas City.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Welcome back for the second hour here at Seahawks headquarters
- 44:23Speaker 2: in Renton. Greg Bell, Justin McInerney is back in Elliott
- 44:25Speaker 2: Bay Studios in foggy Seattle. The Seahawks are preparing to
- 44:30Speaker 2: play the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs. 5-0, they've already had
- 44:33Speaker 2: their bye. And they have Kenneth Walker running wild. 665 yards,
- 44:38Speaker 2: leads the NFL. He's getting 75-80% of the offensive snaps
- 44:43Speaker 2: for Andy Reid. Reid's thrown on the ball, he's caught
- 44:46Speaker 2: Walker's caught two touchdown passes already. Walker has the most
- 44:50Speaker 2: rushing yards in NFL history for a player in his
- 44:53Speaker 2: first five games with a new team. That's opposite of
- 44:58Speaker 2: where the Seahawks running game is. Here to talk about
- 45:01Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker and the undefeated Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes has returned
- 45:04Speaker 2: from his own knee reconstruction and more. Sam McDowell, great
- 45:09Speaker 2: friend of mine. He's with the Kansas City Star columnist,
- 45:11Speaker 2: a national award-winning writer. He's covered the Chiefs for a
- 45:13Speaker 2: long time through their Super Bowl heydays. He joins us
- 45:16Speaker 2: on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline, I assume from Chiefs headquarters,
- 45:21Speaker 2: which is right next to Arrowhead Stadium. I think it
- 45:23Speaker 2: still is, right? Good morning, Sam. Good afternoon to you.
- 45:25Speaker 8: Hey, Greg.
- 45:27Speaker 2: How are you? I am okay. You know the backstory
- 45:31Speaker 2: to that. The Chiefs are right next to Arrowhead Stadium
- 45:35Speaker 2: where they practice, right? Yeah, that's correct.
- 45:38Speaker 6: And you know right that they're starting to practice right now.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Oh, okay. Okay. All right, well, Kenneth Walker, when they
- 45:45Speaker 2: signed him, the money said he was going to be
- 45:47Speaker 2: their guy. And the way Andy Reid uses lead running backs,
- 45:50Speaker 2: no surprise that they would throw to him as well
- 45:52Speaker 2: and that he would be a three-down back. But given
- 45:55Speaker 2: his injury history in Seattle, the fact he was in
- 45:57Speaker 2: a job share with Zach Charbonnet last year that ticked
- 46:00Speaker 2: him off and was part of paving the way to
- 46:01Speaker 2: get him out of Seattle, are you surprised, Sam, that
- 46:05Speaker 2: he's getting 75%, 80% of the offensive snaps and is
- 46:08Speaker 2: this much a part of Andy Reid's offense so far?
- 46:13Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, not really based on training camp. I mean, look,
- 46:17Speaker 6: the primary backup is a fifth round rookie. So, I mean,
- 46:20Speaker 6: the Chiefs really just moved in a completely different direction
- 46:24Speaker 6: with their backfield, which was a timeshare with Isaiah Pacheco
- 46:27Speaker 6: and Kareem Hunt last year. And Kareem Hunt was really
- 46:30Speaker 6: effective at short yardage. And that's about the only compliment
- 46:34Speaker 6: you can say about their backfield last year. And so, like,
- 46:37Speaker 6: this is a drastic change, not just in production, but, like,
- 46:41Speaker 6: in how the production is coming. Because there are 48
- 46:45Speaker 6: running backs that qualify for the stat I'm about to mention,
- 46:48Speaker 6: which is just avoided tackles. The percentage of guys who
- 46:52Speaker 6: are in your way for an extra yard that you
- 46:55Speaker 6: avoid the tackle, whether you make a miss, whether you
- 46:57Speaker 6: actually break free from a guy who's got his hands
- 47:00Speaker 6: on you. And Isaiah Pacheco ranked 48th in that stat
- 47:04Speaker 6: last year, 48 out of 48. Kremont was 45 out
- 47:07Speaker 6: of 48. Kenneth Walker is number one in that stat.
- 47:11Speaker 6: He was number one last year in that stat. And
- 47:14Speaker 6: so this is what has been missing from the Chiefs
- 47:16Speaker 6: offense for the longest time. And I think a lot
- 47:19Speaker 6: of people look and say, well, look at the running game.
- 47:22Speaker 6: What I look at and say, look at what it's
- 47:24Speaker 6: doing for their passing game because they're missing wide receivers
- 47:27Speaker 6: and the passing game is still affected. It's just entirely
- 47:30Speaker 6: different when you have a defense that actually has to
- 47:32Speaker 6: concern itself with what the running back can do.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker, he was soft-spoken here. He didn't say a lot.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Last year, he would kind of talk to me on
- 47:41Speaker 2: the side when I asked him how the whole job
- 47:43Speaker 2: sharing contract year was going. At Super Bowl week, he
- 47:46Speaker 2: looked at me and said, how would you feel? And
- 47:47Speaker 2: that was about the end of the conversation. And I
- 47:50Speaker 2: knew he was leaving at that point. But how do
- 47:53Speaker 2: you guys find him there in Seattle, you guys and gals?
- 47:55Speaker 2: And is he still soft-spoken or has he become a
- 47:58Speaker 2: big presence in that locker room or is he what
- 48:00Speaker 2: Seattle knew him to be for four years?
- 48:03Speaker 6: No, I mean, he's the same guy. That's exactly how
- 48:06Speaker 6: I would describe him. I mean, his voice is literally quiet.
- 48:10Speaker 6: Doesn't say much, but his teammates have really taken a
- 48:14Speaker 6: liking to him. And I mean, look, when he has revitalized,
- 48:19Speaker 6: I mean, last year the Chiefs went 6-11, but has
- 48:22Speaker 6: been different for three years now. I think you're naturally
- 48:26Speaker 6: going to be drawn to that player. But they definitely
- 48:30Speaker 6: seem to be drawn to the person as well. You know,
- 48:32Speaker 6: he sort of speaks when he feels like it's necessary,
- 48:35Speaker 6: but that's about all. And look, I mean, this is
- 48:39Speaker 6: even a good example, Greg, you know how this works
- 48:41Speaker 6: and a game like this, you kind of expect when
- 48:44Speaker 6: the media rollout starts on Wednesday, you'd like to talk
- 48:47Speaker 6: to a player like that. He will talk on Friday instead.
- 48:51Speaker 6: So it's even like, even that stuff has pushed back
- 48:55Speaker 6: and you know how that is. You'd like to talk
- 48:56Speaker 6: to those guys on Wednesday at the latest Thursday. So,
- 48:59Speaker 6: I mean, he's been great, but yeah, I mean, he's
- 49:04Speaker 6: not the most gregarious personality that we have in the
- 49:06Speaker 6: room here.
- 49:08Speaker 2: He didn't even have a weekly here in Seattle. He
- 49:11Speaker 2: would just, you'd kind of get him as catch as
- 49:13Speaker 2: catch can at the locker room, maybe right before practice,
- 49:15Speaker 2: and that was about it. This is Sam McDowell. He's
- 49:17Speaker 2: been a long time writer for the Chiefs, columnist for
- 49:19Speaker 2: the Kansas City Star, great friend of mine and does
- 49:21Speaker 2: a fabulous job, award-winning job covering the Chiefs. Is there
- 49:26Speaker 2: any concern about the workload? Is there any concern about injury?
- 49:29Speaker 2: We know that running back's the most attrited, most injured
- 49:32Speaker 2: position in the sport with the shortest shelf life. The Chiefs,
- 49:35Speaker 2: are they kind of holding their breath or that's not
- 49:38Speaker 2: how Andy Reid thinks?
- 49:40Speaker 6: Yeah, so there's a couple things. I mean, one, you
- 49:43Speaker 6: have a quarterback, you mentioned this in your intro, who
- 49:46Speaker 6: was coming off of off-season knee surgery, who frankly did
- 49:49Speaker 6: not look great in week one in the opener. And
- 49:52Speaker 6: so I think the Chiefs naturally thought, hey, when is
- 49:55Speaker 6: it going to be more valuable to use Kenneth Walker
- 49:58Speaker 6: than while your quarterback is still coming back from his
- 50:02Speaker 6: own injury and trying to regather his own rhythm? The
- 50:05Speaker 6: second thing I'd say is, the Chiefs have only been
- 50:08Speaker 6: trailing in the fourth quarter for like three minutes all
- 50:10Speaker 6: year combined. And so they keep finding themselves in these
- 50:15Speaker 6: game states where they're, they're killing clock. They're killing, they're,
- 50:18Speaker 6: you know, they're holding on to leads in the second half.
- 50:21Speaker 6: They have not yet been all season in a pure
- 50:24Speaker 6: drop back and pass state where, you know, the whole
- 50:27Speaker 6: world knows they have to pass the ball. And so
- 50:30Speaker 6: therefore they're in these, like, they're not in these two
- 50:32Speaker 6: minute drill situations. They're not trying to come back from deficits. So,
- 50:36Speaker 6: The running game is what they've been using. I do
- 50:38Speaker 6: think that fifth round rookie, I mentioned him at Johnson
- 50:41Speaker 6: out of Nebraska, is a guy who will gradually become
- 50:45Speaker 6: more and more part of the offense as he learns
- 50:47Speaker 6: the offense. But this has always been something with Andy
- 50:50Speaker 6: Reid's offenses is it takes rookies a while to develop,
- 50:55Speaker 6: to learn the playbook, to learn the complications, the options
- 50:59Speaker 6: that come within a play. And so therefore, that's what
- 51:04Speaker 6: The guy they trust is number nine right now.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Patrick Mahomes, is he the same Mahomes? Sunday night in Seattle,
- 51:12Speaker 2: are we going to see the same whirling dervish and
- 51:15Speaker 2: running left side and running right side and throwing balls sideways?
- 51:19Speaker 2: Has his game changed at all post-knee surgery into torn ACL?
- 51:25Speaker 6: Yeah, I think you'd have to watch him every play
- 51:28Speaker 6: every week like those of us here do to realize
- 51:31Speaker 6: that it's not quite the same. I think from an
- 51:34Speaker 6: outside perspective, you probably would think he's the same Patrick Holmes.
- 51:38Speaker 6: He's been not only just as effective, but more effective
- 51:41Speaker 6: than he's been since the 2022 season on a per-play basis.
- 51:47Speaker 6: But this is where I still think that's a Kenneth
- 51:49Speaker 6: Walker story because what the Chiefs are doing now offensively
- 51:53Speaker 6: might mirror some of those numbers. They lead the NFL
- 51:56Speaker 6: in yards per play and yards per game. So I
- 51:59Speaker 6: think people think, oh, well, it's Andy Reid and Patrick
- 52:01Speaker 6: Holmes again. Yeah, but it's different how they're getting yards,
- 52:04Speaker 6: which is it's a lot of play action stuff. It's
- 52:07Speaker 6: a lot of under center stuff. You know, last year
- 52:11Speaker 6: they were the second worst effective team under center. This year,
- 52:14Speaker 6: the second most effective team under center. It's incredible what
- 52:18Speaker 6: a running game can do for you. And so I
- 52:21Speaker 6: think he looks more effective statistically, but he would still
- 52:25Speaker 6: tell you he's still trying to get the complete burst
- 52:28Speaker 6: that he felt before the knee injury.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Is this a little earlier than, or they all, all
- 52:33Speaker 2: along plan that Superman would be back by week one. Yeah.
- 52:38Speaker 10: I think it was just like, uh, three days afterwards.
- 52:41Speaker 6: Uh, you know, cause he had surgery the next day. Um,
- 52:44Speaker 6: and it was three days later that he was like, um,
- 52:47Speaker 6: they sort of mapped out the calendar and the way they,
- 52:49Speaker 6: they often do that is they go backwards. They set
- 52:52Speaker 6: a target date and they go backwards from it. And
- 52:54Speaker 6: he said, well, put me down for week one. Like that's,
- 52:57Speaker 6: that's when I want to play. And, And I talked
- 53:00Speaker 6: to him, and at the time he had an 11-month-old daughter,
- 53:04Speaker 6: his third son, his third kid. And he set a
- 53:11Speaker 6: goal to walk before he did, his son Golden. So
- 53:15Speaker 6: that's just been, he will find any sort of way
- 53:20Speaker 6: to motivate himself that he can find. And that it was,
- 53:24Speaker 6: I think a lot of us here had always thought,
- 53:26Speaker 6: pretty lofty, but not going to bet against him.
- 53:30Speaker 2: This is Sam McDowell, Kansas City star, calling this. He's
- 53:33Speaker 2: right next to Arrowhead Stadium at Seahawks at the Chiefs
- 53:37Speaker 2: training facility. They're practicing to play the Seahawks Sunday night
- 53:40Speaker 2: at Lumen Field. He joins us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline.
- 53:43Speaker 2: Overlooked in this 5-0 start for Kansas City, I think
- 53:45Speaker 2: at least nationally and out here in Seattle, Sam, is
- 53:48Speaker 2: the defense for the Chiefs. I know the Chargers are broken.
- 53:51Speaker 2: I know they're witnessing that Mike McDaniel may be out
- 53:53Speaker 2: as the offensive guru in L.A. for the Chargers, but
- 53:56Speaker 2: they held the Chargers to six points. They've had one
- 53:59Speaker 2: spade of– they gave up 30 once. But other than that,
- 54:03Speaker 2: the defense, the metrics and the numbers, they're at the
- 54:06Speaker 2: top of the league in yards allowed and points allowed.
- 54:08Speaker 2: What's working for defensively where they weren't too good for
- 54:12Speaker 2: a couple years on that side of the ball?
- 54:15Speaker 6: Yeah, I think the first thing is the schedule. The
- 54:17Speaker 6: schedule's worked in their favor. Statistically, when you go by DVOA,
- 54:22Speaker 6: they've faced the easiest schedule in the league this year.
- 54:25Speaker 6: They will face the sixth-hardest schedule in the league moving forward.
- 54:28Speaker 6: So there's a significant contrast in what they've seen so
- 54:31Speaker 6: far and what awaits them in the final 10 games. So,
- 54:34Speaker 6: 12 games here. So I think that's going to change
- 54:39Speaker 6: on Sunday. You know, they play six of their next
- 54:42Speaker 6: eight games on the road. They go to Seattle, then
- 54:44Speaker 6: they go to Denver. They have a stretch where they
- 54:46Speaker 6: go to the Rams, Bills, and Bengals in that.
- 54:49Speaker 10: It's going to get a lot harder for them. They
- 54:51Speaker 10: have a young defense. They're relying a lot more on rookies.
- 54:55Speaker 10: You know, they traded Trent Mitchell Duffy to the Rams.
- 54:57Speaker 10: Jalen Watson also signed with the Rams. They've got new
- 55:00Speaker 10: cornerbacks starting for him this year. The sixth overall pick
- 55:04Speaker 10: has been really good. But the pass rush has been inconsistent.
- 55:09Speaker 10: And as you know, I'm not educating you here, Sam
- 55:12Speaker 10: Darnold is a different quarterback when he's under pressure compared
- 55:15Speaker 10: to when he's not. So I view that as a
- 55:17Speaker 10: significant key in the game, whether or not the Chiefs
- 55:20Speaker 10: can generate pressure.
- 55:21Speaker 2: Are they worried at all about Seattle and running the ball?
- 55:24Speaker 2: I know The league knows that Seattle wants to run
- 55:27Speaker 2: the ball, and that's why Brian Fleury is the offensive coordinator.
- 55:29Speaker 2: But when the Chiefs look at the running backs they're trotting,
- 55:32Speaker 2: the Seahawks are trotting out, Emmanuel Wilson and George Helani
- 55:34Speaker 2: and Bellows Jones Jr. and maybe an incremental return of
- 55:38Speaker 2: Zach Charbonnet. You just nailed it, I think, the pressuring
- 55:41Speaker 2: of Sam Darnold. But coming into this game, you would
- 55:44Speaker 2: think the Chiefs don't even have to worry about a
- 55:45Speaker 2: Seahawks running game, no?
- 55:48Speaker 6: Yeah, that's what I think has actually worked in their
- 55:50Speaker 6: favor when I go back to talking about the game
- 55:52Speaker 6: states that they've played this year where they've constantly been
- 55:55Speaker 6: ahead and their defensive linemen have been able to tee
- 55:58Speaker 6: off a little bit knowing that the pass is coming.
- 56:00Speaker 6: I've wanted the same thing as you, Greg, which is
- 56:02Speaker 6: do they just say, let's treat this like a pass
- 56:06Speaker 6: play and adjust later if we have to. And that's
- 56:08Speaker 6: the way I saw teams play against the Chiefs last year.
- 56:10Speaker 6: That's the way I saw teams treat Jose Pacheco last year.
- 56:13Speaker 6: They said, we don't care if you run the ball.
- 56:15Speaker 6: We'll adjust once we see the ball in his hands.
- 56:17Speaker 6: I see teams playing against Seattle that way right now.
- 56:22Speaker 2: The Chiefs have started with Denver, Indianapolis, which is an
- 56:24Speaker 2: overtime win, Miami, Las Vegas, and the Chargers, too, underscore
- 56:29Speaker 2: Sam's point. Okay, Sam, we'll put you on the spot.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Who do you think wins and why? And what do
- 56:34Speaker 2: you think? You already mentioned one key, pressuring Sam Darnold,
- 56:36Speaker 2: but what do you think the keys of the game are?
- 56:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I'd say the other key that I look at
- 56:42Speaker 6: is the inverse, which is, When I mention the schedule,
- 56:45Speaker 6: what they really haven't faced yet is a good running defense.
- 56:49Speaker 6: And so you look at the ranks of the run
- 56:52Speaker 6: defense this year, and it's 16th, 19th, 28th, 30th, and 31st. Well,
- 56:57Speaker 6: the Seahawks are the second-best run defense in the league,
- 57:00Speaker 6: and you know that they're going to be amped to
- 57:03Speaker 6: try and not let Kenneth Walker have a 100-yard day,
- 57:07Speaker 6: 200-yard day, something like that. So I anticipate that the
- 57:11Speaker 6: key to the game is actually going to be Does
- 57:13Speaker 6: your play-action stuff work? You've got a team that's good
- 57:16Speaker 6: against the run, a team that's probably going to be
- 57:17Speaker 6: keen against the run. Can you get your play-action stuff work?
- 57:21Speaker 6: And since the Chiefs have been the best play-action team
- 57:23Speaker 6: in the league this year, I think there's reason to
- 57:25Speaker 6: believe it could. So I'm taking the Chiefs, but I
- 57:29Speaker 6: will say two days ago I had the opposite answer,
- 57:32Speaker 6: so I'm all over the place on this one.
- 57:33Speaker 2: But I've got the Chiefs 23-20. I think that's a score-ish.
- 57:38Speaker 2: About the area that I think is going to end
- 57:40Speaker 2: in the low 20s for each team. Yeah, Seahawks haven't
- 57:43Speaker 2: allowed a 100-yard rusher since October 24th. October of 2024,
- 57:47Speaker 2: the streak of 35 consecutive games. That's what's on the
- 57:50Speaker 2: line with the NFL leading rusher, Kenneth Walker, coming in. Sam,
- 57:53Speaker 2: we'll see you at the yard on Sunday. I hope
- 57:55Speaker 2: you have a pleasant trip to the Northwest, and it's
- 57:57Speaker 2: great that you joined me. Thanks a lot for joining us.
- 58:00Speaker 6: Yeah, it was good to talk to you, Greg. See
- 58:01Speaker 6: you Sunday.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Yes, sir. Thank you. Sam McDowell, great friend of mine,
- 58:04Speaker 2: longtime friend of mine, has covered the Chiefs for the
- 58:06Speaker 2: Kansas City Star from a McClatchy colleague of mine talking
- 58:10Speaker 2: from Kansas City. And he stated right up front, Patrick Mahomes'
- 58:15Speaker 2: success nine, ten months after Denise's reconstruction, a torn ACL
- 58:19Speaker 2: and an LCL, is because of Kenneth Walker. He said,
- 58:23Speaker 2: it's quote a Kenneth Walker story, the Chiefs lead in
- 58:26Speaker 2: yards per play, And he said it's different how they're
- 58:29Speaker 2: getting yards this season. Play action, under center. They've gone
- 58:32Speaker 2: from one of the worst teams under center in productivity to,
- 58:36Speaker 2: as Sam pointed out, the second most effective team under
- 58:39Speaker 2: center this season. And his quote was, it's incredible what
- 58:42Speaker 2: a running game can do for Patrick Mahomes.
- 58:45Speaker 7: Yeah, and what we've seen it done here.
- 58:48Speaker 2: And what it won't do when you don't have one,
- 58:50Speaker 2: what it can do to your quarterback too. And he
- 58:53Speaker 2: nails the key to the game. Do the Chiefs even
- 58:57Speaker 2: pay attention? to the Seahawks running game where they spit
- 59:00Speaker 2: on it like the 49ers did. The 49ers, he framed
- 59:04Speaker 2: it in a way I hadn't thought of. We're going
- 59:06Speaker 2: to play the pass and pressure the quarterback and then
- 59:08Speaker 2: react to if you run. And that's what the 49ers did.
- 59:12Speaker 2: That's exactly what San Francisco did to a lesser extent.
- 59:15Speaker 2: Denver did, but for sure the 49ers defense didn't honor
- 59:17Speaker 2: the run. And the Seahawks ended up getting some yards
- 59:20Speaker 2: and some gains doing it, and it ended up being
- 59:22Speaker 2: an 80-yard rushing game for Emmanuel Wilson two games ago.
- 59:25Speaker 2: But they basically spat on it. And will the Chiefs
- 59:29Speaker 2: do the same thing and go after Sam Darnold? Seahawks
- 59:33Speaker 2: need to run the ball, period, end of story. And
- 59:36Speaker 2: Zach Charbonnet, I don't think Zach Charbonnet is going to
- 59:39Speaker 2: be the knight on a white horse to come in
- 59:41Speaker 2: on a 20-plus carry night in his first game in
- 59:43Speaker 2: nine months after reconstructive knee surgery. I just don't see it.
- 59:47Speaker 2: And Mike McDonald's trying to be somewhat revealing and honest
- 59:51Speaker 2: when he says he will play in some capacity if
- 59:53Speaker 2: this week of practices go well. His practice, first practice
- 59:57Speaker 2: of the week, first full practice. He practiced on Monday.
- 59:59Speaker 2: It was a pretty light one. But the full preparation
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: game plan practice, Zach Charbonnet is scheduled to be on
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: the field this afternoon in the middle of the offense
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: for the first time since mid-January. Up next, your chance
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: to be a part of the show. 49451 on the
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge text line. A lot of people ripping the
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: NBA and saying they're done with it. Some people saying,
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: why are we even talking about the NBA?
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Others with the questions about Zach Charbonnet and the running
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: game for the Seahawks against the Chiefs on Sunday night.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Your chance to be a part of the show and
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: with talkbacks. We do that on the iHeartRadio app and 933KJR. com,
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: the red microphone button. We'll play those back, 30 seconds
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: or less. Just want to play those back. And at 11.35,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: your next chance to win $ 1, 000. Our daily fact or
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: fiction contest, thanks to the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: My pick will be at 11.35. to get in the
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: hopper to win $ 1, 000 or perhaps $ 10, 000 at the end
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: of the contest, December 11th. All that's coming up. Ian
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Furness just walked into the door. I'll talk to him
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: at 1145 to see what he's got going on in
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: the show today from Seahawks headquarters on 93.3 KJRFM. This
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: is going.
- 1:01:15Speaker 9: To sound negative. But I feel positive about it. I
- 1:01:20Speaker 9: don't know if we make the playoffs this year because
- 1:01:22Speaker 9: of our running game. But I think that's good. We
- 1:01:25Speaker 9: can get a nice running back in the draft. I'm
- 1:01:27Speaker 9: not saying Price is a bust because clearly it's too
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: soon to say that. But are we really going to
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: extend Charbonnet and look at our other options behind Charbonnet?
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: So, Greg, if.
- 1:01:43Speaker 11: You look at the franchise tag, what that was for
- 1:01:48Speaker 11: Kenneth Walker.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: And you compare that to one year.
- 1:01:51Speaker 11: Of what we gave Rashid Shaheed. And we still draft
- 1:01:59Speaker 11: Jadarian Price because, you know, we still don't have Charbonnet back.
- 1:02:05Speaker 11: And he's going into a contract year, so we would
- 1:02:08Speaker 11: still need a running back for the future.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: I could give a rat's ass about the NBA coming
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: back to Seattle.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: I know a lot of people want it.
- 1:02:15Speaker 9: It's hard enough being a Mariner fan, and for me personally,
- 1:02:19Speaker 9: a Cougar fan.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: I don't need any more stress with another team. So,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: love him or leave him. I'd rather leave him. He's
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: not alone. About that franchise tag issue with Kenneth Walker...
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: That would go completely against what John Schneider thinks about
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: the running back position. The franchise tag value for 2026,
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: which the Jets used on Brees Hall, for instance, was
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: $ 14. 3 million. $ 14. 293, to be exact. That's the money the
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Chiefs gave Kenneth Walker per year. That's exactly the money
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: that John Schneider decided he was not going to invest
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: in Kenneth Walker at running back because running backs get
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: hurt and Walker has an injury history. The value proposition
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: at running back absolutely took Seattle out of the running
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: to put a franchise tag on Kenneth Walker. Now, we
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: can argue, obviously, can argue the merits of that decision
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: now with Kenneth Walker leading the NFL and rushing for
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: the Chiefs coming in here Sunday night and the Seahawks
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: running game in disarray. But they put all of their
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: eggs in the Jadarian Price rookie minimum salary contract basket.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: And that basket is on injured reserve. It has not
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: worked out, to say the least. But philosophically, it is
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: consistent with how John Schneider has treated the running back position.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: That's why they were never going to franchise tag Kenneth
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: Walker because the cost is the same cost that they
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: declined to give him in a multi-year extension. You would
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: give him that multi-year extension because then you could defer
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: some of that salary cap hit. Remember, if you franchise
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: tag a guy, that's a guaranteed $ 14. 29 million for this year,
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: whether he gets hurt or not. That's exactly opposite of
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: how Schneider thinks about the running back position guaranteeing that
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: much money. to a position and a player that's been
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: hurt that often so it's working out for the chiefs
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: it's not working out for the seahawks for sure but
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: i totally get why they did what they did and
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: again it was completely different to rashid shaheed they could
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: have done both it is not either war shaheed they
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: had the cash and cap space to both signs re-sign
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: shaheed and re-sign walker they just chose not to with
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: walker and it's biting them right now.
- 1:04:30Speaker 7: Yeah i mean this is what i shoulda coulda.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: Right It is, and it just is exacerbated by the
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: fact of Price being on injury reserve. Yes. The caller
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: is absolutely right in saying we can't call Price a failure.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: We can't. It's way too early to say, well, he's
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: a bust. He's played three games. And, yeah, he fumbled
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: twice in two of them, but he's only played three games.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: So it's just not working out, and now we get
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: to have it rubbed in our faces when we see
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker running for the Chiefs on Sunday night. Anything
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: jump out at you at the text line, Jess? Sorry.
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: My mic should be on for this.
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: Yes. This coming from Michael. Thoughts on Jonathan Taylor as
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: a possible trade option?
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Two years... Well, 27 and 28. Two years beyond this
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: one remaining on his deal.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: What would you have to give up for someone like that?
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Exactly. Someone who's been an NFL rushing champion. I'm talking...
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Second-round pick, maybe? First-round pick, maybe? Now, they have 11
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: picks next year, but Schneider has not usually been in
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: the business of trading top picks unless the name was
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Jamal Adams, and that didn't work out very well. So
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: I think he'd be very reluctant to do that. I
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: really think he believes, and obviously Mike McDonald and the
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: coaches believe, that Price is the answer. It's just that
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Price can't get back until next month, and what do
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: they do in the meantime? To the point about what
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: the Seahawks' season is, and somebody on the text line,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: I can't find it right in front of me, that
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: the season is over if they don't win the next
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: two games. Not necessarily, not really. Look at the NFC.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: Maybe the division's gone the way the 49ers are playing,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: what their schedule is ahead of them. But do we
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: really believe the Minnesota Vikings, who can barely score points,
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: only 109 points in five games, are going to stay undefeated?
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: They play the 49ers in a few weeks in Mexico City.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: The Carolina Panthers are currently the third playoff seed because
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: they lead the NFC South, which is only slightly worse,
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: not as bad, I should say, than the NFC East
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: that the Giants lead 3-2-1. And then the wildcard teams
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: are the 4-2 Packers, the 4-2 Bears, and the 3-2 Lions.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: The Seahawks are 3-3, a half game back of a
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: playoff spot right now. They're really competing with the Packers, Bears,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: and Lions to get into the playoffs. and then hoping
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: for an absolute pratfall or a calamity of injuries from
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: the 49ers to get back in the division race. If
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: they lose both in three and five, they're not even
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: out of it because the NFC, if you get in
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: a wild card and you can get into the top
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: one or two wild cards, you're going to play one
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: of those division, South Division or East Division champions in
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: the first round. And the Seahawks can absolutely beat the Panthers,
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: the Giants, the Falcons. Whoever comes out of the East,
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: I would not subscribe if they lose or even 3-5
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: if the season's over with nine games left. Yeah.
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: No, I mean, we've seen it before in the year
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: following the Super Bowl championship. Yes.
- 1:07:41Speaker 7: We saw exactly that happen.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Hey, you want to win $ 1, 000? Your latest chance is
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: right now. We're set to go. Glad you're with us.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly thousand bucks and the
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: $ 10, 000 grand prize.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: day feels lucky.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Fact or Fiction is on.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: You know what really breaks me up, really breaks my heart,
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: makes me sad, Jessamyn?
- 1:08:13Speaker 7: I have a feeling it's something that doesn't.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: It's a real shame that Navy is having such a
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: tough season right now. It just breaks my little heart
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: that Navy is 2-4. They're coming off a loss in
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: which the Middies, the Squids, allowed 38 points at Texas
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: San Antonio. Now the Squids get North Texas. They're tied
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: with UTSA for first place in the American Conference. Army's
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: second in that league. The North Texas Mean Green are
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: coming to Annapolis on Saturday night. Since an opening loss
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: of defending national champion Indiana, the Mean Green have scored 44, 49, 63, 45,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: and 50 points. And now they get the Navy, and
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: Navy just gave up 38 to Texas San Antonio. This
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: is pretty appropriate for Navy. I see a boat race
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: for North Texas coming into Annapolis. I don't know why.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: Some people think North Texas is going to be a
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: playoff team coming out of the American Conference and get
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: one of those 11 or 12 seeds in the college
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: football playoff. And they're only favored by two and a
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: half at woeful Squiddyville. The Squids are going to get
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: boat raced. North Texas is favored by 2.5. Give me
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: all of that and more. I say North Texas beats
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: Navy by three or more points. More like three or
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: more touchdowns.
- 1:09:31Speaker 7: Yeah, they're crushing it.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: North Texas is just lighting everybody up. The Mean Green.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: I'll tell you why they're called the Mean Green in
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: a second. But North Texas, minus 2.5 at Navy. If
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: you agree and you want to win $ 1, 000, text FACT
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: to 49451. If you disagree and, well, really, if you
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: don't want to win $ 1, 000, text FICTION. to 49451. Remember,
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: we're the only show in the station that's above 500.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: We're six games above 500.
- 1:09:53Speaker 7: Yeah, we're kind of killing it.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: We know what we're doing. So if you want to
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000, text FACT to 49451. If you don't, text
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: FICTION to 49451. North Texas, minus two and a half.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: At Navy, I am enjoying the pile on the Middies,
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: who lost to the Zoomies of Air Force 14-9 a
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: couple weeks ago. Nine points from Navy against Air Force,
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: and now they're two and four. That really breaks my heart.
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: Yeah, you seem really broken up about it.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, just really sad. Do you know why they're called
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: the Mean Green in North Texas?
- 1:10:23Speaker 7: I actually don't.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Mean Joe Green went to North Texas, the Pittsburgh Steelers
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Hall of Famer. So they're called the Mean Green in
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: honor of Joe Green.
- 1:10:32Speaker 7: That's really cool. I have not heard of many mascots
- 1:10:35Speaker 7: being named after a player.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: The most famous North Texas player of them all. Please
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: tell me you've seen the commercial out there. Not you, Jess,
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: but I know you have. But of the old 1970s
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: Coke commercial of the kid in the tunnel. Yeah, of course. Thanks, Joe.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: Mean Joe throws him his– he's sad and beaten up
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: after a long game, and he throws him his Steeler
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: jersey right off his back, throws the kid a– as
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: the kid gave him his Coke. Yeah.
- 1:11:02Speaker 7: Yeah, that was an even trade for him.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: Mean Joe Green Coke commercial. Google it or whatever the
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: kid's doing.
- 1:11:07Speaker 7: Oh, I mean, it's iconic.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's one of the most famous successful ads in
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: the history of advertising. Mean Joe Green at his height.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: in the Steelers' four Super Bowls in six years. But, yeah,
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: Mean Joe Green, the North Texas Mean Green. North Texas
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: minus 2.5 at Navy. I'm proud to proclaim that. Our
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: pick of Wednesday for Factor Fiction brought to you by
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Remember how it works, 735, 1135, 235,
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: and 335. Those are your chances to win every day,
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: except when we have Husky games on Friday night in
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: West Lafayette, Indiana or something. when we have a pregame
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: show at 1 o'clock. But generally, 20 chances to win
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: each week. So if you don't win the $ 1, 000, if
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: you win once in a week, you get entered in
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: to be drawn, your name to be drawn on a
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: Monday of each week to win $ 1, 000. But even if
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: you don't win that $ 1, 000 weekly prize, whoever wins the
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: most times between the start of the contest last month
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: until December 11th, Army-Navy Friday, when Jessamyn and I will
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: be in Times Square broadcasting for KJR, Whoever wins the
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: most times between now and then will win $ 10, 000. Regardless
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: of whether you won any of the weekly prizes of $ 1, 000,
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: whoever wins the most will win $ 10, 000 from the Lucky
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 1:12:17Speaker 7: So vote often.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: So you have about 10 in 9 minutes to pick
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: on Navy going down yet again to fall to 2-5.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Minus North Texas, minus 2-1. Back to the text line
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: real quick. Keith, for the 253 friend of the show,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: friend of the station, do you think Schneider would even
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: consider changing up some of his core philosophies? Two Lombardis
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: says he's doing pretty good with how he drives the franchise. Yes,
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: I agree to the latter more than the former. How
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: he constructs rosters, how he treats running backs, how he has,
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: until recently, treated offensive linemen and figuring those are second
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: in priority to get gets work. the only general manager
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: in NFL history to take two different coaches, two different teams,
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: two different rosters to Super Bowl championships. Yeah, some people
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: think he's going to be in the Hall of Fame. 253,
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: do the Chiefs run a different style offense that highlights
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Walker's skills better? Well, you heard Sam McDowell talk about
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: how the Chiefs are playing far more under center, which gets,
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: that's a whole different flow for a running back. If
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: you have the quarterback taking time to take the ball
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: under center and coming back to meet you to hand off,
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: rather than just turning and handing off at a shotgun,
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: that's a whole different rhythm. That gives Walker a chance
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: to read the blocks. That gives a chance to read
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: the lanes and cutback lanes that you don't often get
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: in shotgun. And you heard him mention how much they're
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: using him in the pass game. And so the Seahawks
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: didn't do a lot of that with Kenneth Walker. He
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: was not a three-down back with them. They often took
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: him off the field on third downs. In fact, they
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: took him off the field in the goal line. And
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: the Chiefs and Andy Reid aren't doing that. Zach Charbonnet
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: had 12 touchdowns last year, the most rushing touchdown since
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Marshawn Lynch in 2024, and Walker was running between the
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: 20s and then coming off the field.
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: 24? 14?
- 1:14:01Speaker 7: I'm sorry, 14.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Yeah, okay.
- 1:14:05Speaker 7: I was like, wait a minute. Did I miss the
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: Lynch era?
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: A 45-year-old Marshawn Lynch in 2024? No, that didn't happen. No.
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: 253.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: The only time the NBA is watched in my home
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: is the finals. It is watched in my home. You
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: used a passive voice there. The only time the NBA
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: is watching on him is the finals. They'll play some
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: defense then, maybe score some points in the paint instead
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: of threes raining down all game long and actually play
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: with some meaning. Shuffield, 360. Can we be done with
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: the WNBA and NBA? Sonics are not coming back on
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: a scale of 1 to 10. What are your thoughts
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: on the Sonics returning?
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: Eight.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: I think it's an eight.
- 1:14:43Speaker 7: They're coming back.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: I think it's all posturing. I think it's posturing and
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: leveraging for a higher expansion for you.
- 1:14:50Speaker 7: Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: It says, I'm tired of KJR wasting time on the NBA. Honestly,
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: I'd rather hear– this is from the 971. I'd rather
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: hear updates on Pro Pickleball or the ACL. What's the ACL?
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: What is that, cornhole? I mean, to me– Ian says
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: that's cornhole.
- 1:15:14Speaker 10: Oh, it is.
- 1:15:15Speaker 7: Okay, I thought it was a ligament that I'm missing
- 1:15:17Speaker 7: in my knee.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: Yeah. You are just playing into Adam Silver's hand by
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: continuing to discuss the mythical team that may come to Seattle.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Talk about unicorns or UFOs.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: I mean, I do not blame anyone in this city
- 1:15:33Speaker 5: for feeling that way.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: No, they totally deserve it.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: Absolutely. Absolutely. Ian just poked his head in here to
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: the Seahawks headquarters, a little room in the meeting room
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: next to the main team meeting room. He's going to
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: tell us what he's got on his show next from
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: Seahawks Headquarters on 93.3 KJR FM. Hi, welcome back. Thanks
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: for being with us. Greg Bell and Justin McIntyre. We
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: are every day on KJR at 10 a.m. to noon.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: And we're at Seahawks Headquarters where I guess we just
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: rolled in. Ian Furness, the voice of the Kraken last night.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: And their win over, the shootout win over Detroit. What'd
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: you think of that? 3-0, did you think you had
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: a cruise there for the final period? And then with, what,
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: eight minutes left, it all fell in?
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: I thought that it was, if they get one, could
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: be interesting.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:32Speaker 8: I didn't expect Vince Dunn to have a Vince Dunn
- 1:16:35Speaker 8: moment and get an assist on a tying goal with
- 1:16:37Speaker 8: 16 seconds left. But, I love you, Vince, but man.
- 1:16:42Speaker 8: And you know what, it's just bad balance. You know,
- 1:16:45Speaker 8: I was just telling this to our buddy Tim Booth
- 1:16:47Speaker 8: out there.
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: We were talking.
- 1:16:47Speaker 8: He was at the game last night for the Times,
- 1:16:49Speaker 8: and we were talking. I said, Lane Lambert actually played
- 1:16:52Speaker 8: it down pretty good last night. He was pleased with everything.
- 1:16:55Speaker 8: End of the day, you know who would have been
- 1:16:57Speaker 8: happy with that? It's Todd Laiweke. Like, you're up 3-0.
- 1:17:01Speaker 8: It was kind of a nothing burger game. Then it's 3-1.
- 1:17:04Speaker 8: Then it's 3-2.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: Uh-oh.
- 1:17:05Speaker 8: The final minute and a half was great. Bad penalty call.
- 1:17:10Speaker 8: But you're like, okay, fans getting their money's worth. They're
- 1:17:12Speaker 8: staying in the seats.
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: 3-0, you're leaving with 10 minutes to go.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:17:16Speaker 8: 3-2, you're sticking around. And then all of a sudden,
- 1:17:18Speaker 8: you don't want it to be 3-3. But you know
- 1:17:20Speaker 8: what's the best possible scenario? Win an overtime or a shootout. Like,
- 1:17:24Speaker 8: what the hell? And everyone's, you have a shootout, no
- 1:17:26Speaker 8: one sits down. And so I guess in that sense,
- 1:17:29Speaker 8: it was fine. Have they gotten better in shootouts? Have
- 1:17:31Speaker 8: they worked on it?
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: Because they look better.
- 1:17:34Speaker 8: So Lane talked about their goalie coach, Colin Zulianello, put
- 1:17:38Speaker 8: together a massive project this summer. studying goaltending tendencies and
- 1:17:42Speaker 8: things like that. So instead of helping his goalies, he's
- 1:17:44Speaker 8: helping his shooters. It's a pretty good story. We've got
- 1:17:46Speaker 8: to do something with that on the TV side because
- 1:17:48Speaker 8: it's like, yeah, they're better. Freddie Goudreau has always been
- 1:17:50Speaker 8: a great shootout shooter. Bobby McMahon is pretty good. Beneers
- 1:17:54Speaker 8: is pretty good.
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: And, yeah, they're better. They're better in that regard. And
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: Phil was great last night.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Al Kaninsky made a point this morning to Chuck that
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: now they have a full-time emergency backup goaltender. Is that true? Yes.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: And that he takes time on the ice after practice
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: to field penalty shots.
- 1:18:10Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:18:10Speaker 8: He had one practice or one session where he took
- 1:18:13Speaker 8: 150 shots.
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: I don't know how he moved the next day. But, yeah,
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: that helps. Yeah, because Joey and Phil, they're done with practice.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: We're not going to take 150 shots.
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: Yeah, we're good.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: Why didn't they have a full-time emergency?
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: This is a new thing with the NHL. It's a
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: new part of the CBA.
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: Oh.
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: Every team has one.
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: So they don't have a Chuck sitting in the stands
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: like that dude in Toronto that got to play for
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: the Hurricanes anymore. Not anymore.
- 1:18:35Speaker 8: Every team has a guy that played some level of
- 1:18:38Speaker 8: high competitive hockey and is not 45 years old. Yeah,
- 1:18:41Speaker 8: like the case of the Kraken guys, he also works
- 1:18:43Speaker 8: on the analytics side in the front office, but played.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: At Michigan State. And is he in uniform? He's in
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: every practice, travels. And so he's in the stands at
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: the game? Yeah.
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: Or locker room, whatever.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, interesting.
- 1:18:57Speaker 8: But he's there for practice. He's always the last guy
- 1:19:00Speaker 8: off the ice in practice. It's a smart move. I mean,
- 1:19:03Speaker 8: every team... It's like the NFL. Why doesn't every team
- 1:19:05Speaker 8: not have three quarterbacks? Where's Mike Holm when he's yelling about, Yes!
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: I've been busy for years! Yes. Of course, he wants
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: expanded rosters, as does every coach, too, though.
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, right?
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: What are you expecting from your Cougs against Boise State?
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: Nothing.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: But you've got a new quarterback.
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: I'm expecting nothing.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: But you've got a new quarterback. It looks like he's legit.
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: Maybe he'll be competitive.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: I don't know. I got new yesterday with MK. Defense
- 1:19:30Speaker 8: is good. We'll see if they can. Boise State runs
- 1:19:33Speaker 8: the ball down your throat.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: Riley and Gaines are both really good. Not Riley and Gaines,
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: but Riley and Gaines. But they're really good.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: Riley Gaines, a whole different story.
- 1:19:41Speaker 7: Interesting.
- 1:19:43Speaker 8: They're two running backs. They're two running backs. But, no,
- 1:19:47Speaker 8: they run the ball. I mean, we're more competitive with him.
- 1:19:50Speaker 8: At least we were against Oregon State. But, I mean,
- 1:19:54Speaker 8: they're a long ways away. This is a lost year.
- 1:19:55Speaker 8: It's been a lost three years, to be honest with you.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: I was looking at the NFC standings today, and I
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: don't subscribe to the theory that if the Seahawks lose
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: to the Chiefs and Bears, their season's over at 3-5.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: Not with the wild card race the way it is.
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: But division's over.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: It would be. I think division's over if they lose
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: this week.
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: Huh.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: They'd be four back, probably.
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: Four and a half.
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: Yeah, four and a half counting the loss. That's right.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: I mean, there's a reality that sets in.
- 1:20:21Speaker 8: You have to ask yourself, are you going to win
- 1:20:22Speaker 8: the division in the NFC West with a record worse
- 1:20:27Speaker 8: than 13-4?
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: It doesn't look like it, does it?
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: The Niners would have to lose four of 11. There
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: you go. Right.
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: Simple math.
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: I'm no for my math.
- 1:20:38Speaker 7: You're really good at radio math, yeah.
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: Really good.
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: What do you got today?
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: Jaron Reed's going to pop by.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: Talk to him about facing Kansas City. That should be fun.
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: Oh, the former chief? Yes, he did. And he's studying
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker and how they're using him.
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: Yes, we'll talk about that.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: Sam McDowell, a friend of mine at Kansas City Stars,
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: said that they're under center so much more than they
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: were last year with Mahomes. Yeah. And that they're the
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: second best team under productive under center because of Kenneth Walker.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: Play action. There you go. Exactly. Play action. That's weird.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: So we've got that.
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: Stuart Mandell as well. All coming up.
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: Stuart Mandell. You've got a few things to talk about
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: with him, I think. College football. It is up next
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: from Seahawks Headquarters. Jaren Reed is going to sit down
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: with them probably in, what, 15 minutes time or maybe less?
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: Thanks for listening. Greg and Jessamyn will do it again tomorrow.
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: I'll be at Seahawks headquarters again tomorrow. Sam Darnold's press
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: conference day tomorrow on 93.3 KJRFM.
