- 0:00Speaker 1: The Abbott Panthers, so number two in the state in
- 0:02Speaker 1: the one A Division one six man state rankings, and
- 0:04Speaker 1: they play the Aquilla Cougars, Abbot and Aquilla. In case
- 0:08Speaker 1: you don't know, are I guess as the crow flies
- 0:12Speaker 1: because you have to fly over the lake if you
- 0:14Speaker 1: did that instead of driving around, the lake would be
- 0:17Speaker 1: about ten miles apart. Something like that. But we'll get
- 0:22Speaker 1: to the high school football stuff soon enough. We'll start
- 0:26Speaker 1: off with the college stuff. We start off with Greg Tapper,
- 0:29Speaker 1: managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. You know
- 0:32Speaker 1: how you always ask me Tap after a big win
- 0:34Speaker 1: or a big loss, what the pulse is of the
- 0:39Speaker 1: greater Austin area, And certainly could go through to those
- 0:43Speaker 1: who cover Texas A and M in College station.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Just curious.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Is there a palpable buzz over what's going on over
- 0:52Speaker 1: in the hilltop over at SMU or is everybody just
- 0:55Speaker 1: still in the depths of Dallas cowboy depression.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Well, certainly the Cowboys are not helping football fever around here,
- 1:03Speaker 3: but I will tell you that that certainly SMU is
- 1:08Speaker 3: a little bit of the talk of the town right now,
- 1:10Speaker 3: especially coming off of that big win over pitch. And
- 1:12Speaker 3: I think that what really stands out for people, what
- 1:14Speaker 3: people are starting to pay notes to, and it's something
- 1:17Speaker 3: i've kind of it's called me to scratch.
- 1:19Speaker 4: My head in the past.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Is that is that SMUs finally filling out Ford Stadium.
- 1:23Speaker 3: They're finally filling out the stadium. That was a big
- 1:26Speaker 3: concern for me. Even when they were good, they just
- 1:29Speaker 3: weren't having and even when they were good and had
- 1:31Speaker 3: high profile games, they weren't drawing big crowds. They drew
- 1:35Speaker 3: a legit strong crowd out there at Ford Stadium for
- 1:38Speaker 3: the first time in what feels like a long time,
- 1:41Speaker 3: and for the big win over pitch, and they were rewarded.
- 1:43Speaker 3: And so I think that there is that is probably
- 1:45Speaker 3: the best measure of the buzz around here. You know, look,
- 1:48Speaker 3: if you're SMU, you're always going to be fighting uphill
- 1:51Speaker 3: against the Cowboys. You know, You're you're probably going to
- 1:53Speaker 3: be fighting uphill.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Against Texas and A and M right But at the.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Same time, you know they are the team right now
- 2:00Speaker 3: that is playing, you know, playing the best coming off
- 2:02Speaker 3: of the biggest win and an opportunity a real, actual
- 2:05Speaker 3: clear path to the college football playoff and furthermore, they
- 2:09Speaker 3: played exciting Brandon football. It's something there are in many
- 2:12Speaker 3: ways a lot of what the Cowboys aren't right now,
- 2:14Speaker 3: which is a good and be like exciting that I
- 2:19Speaker 3: think is kind of helping to fill in some of
- 2:21Speaker 3: the dole drums due to the professional team around here.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Well, it's a good point.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And you know, they they, like you said, they've got
- 2:28Speaker 1: a clear path. Really, they're playing three ponents, none of
- 2:32Speaker 1: whom have a winning record. They're all four and four
- 2:35Speaker 1: on down the stretch. This is a real shot for
- 2:37Speaker 1: them to get at least into the a SEC Championship
- 2:40Speaker 1: game to take on Miami in all probability.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and especially you know, I think there was a
- 2:46Speaker 3: big question of what is SMU going to do whenever
- 2:48Speaker 3: they make the move up.
- 2:49Speaker 2: And if you.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Remember early in the season, there was some real kind
- 2:53Speaker 3: of handwringing about s and U simply because you know
- 2:57Speaker 3: that they weren't able. They weren't playing to their paper
- 2:59Speaker 3: early they had the early loss to BYU. They just
- 3:02Speaker 3: weren't simply playing as well as we thought that they could.
- 3:06Speaker 3: And further one, I think even more than that, I
- 3:08Speaker 3: know we have conversations on this program about how we
- 3:11Speaker 3: didn't understand what they were doing in the quarterbacks situation
- 3:13Speaker 3: where they were playing Kevin Jennings, they were playing Preston Stone.
- 3:16Speaker 3: They're basically doing a two quarterback system. Well, they've fully
- 3:20Speaker 3: committed to Kevin Jennings. I think part of it at
- 3:23Speaker 3: least is because Preston's son has been nicked up, but
- 3:26Speaker 3: he has been a revelation for them and he's given
- 3:28Speaker 3: them a new you know, a new kind of pep
- 3:32Speaker 3: in their step offensively, and it's all kind of filtering down.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I also think what helps is that, you know, SMU
- 3:39Speaker 3: has in the past couple of years under Sunny Dykes
- 3:42Speaker 3: and continued under RHT Lashley, they have tried to really
- 3:45Speaker 3: steal the borders of DFW and really be Dallas a team,
- 3:49Speaker 3: and that certainly helps. Whenever you have a quarterback who
- 3:53Speaker 3: led South o'cliffs to a state championship, you know, piloting
- 3:57Speaker 3: your team.
- 3:58Speaker 4: So I think that that helps.
- 3:59Speaker 3: And right now it's kind of all working for the Ponies,
- 4:01Speaker 3: and it's probably the most buzz that's been around that
- 4:04Speaker 3: football program in quite some time.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Let me get your thoughts to another school in Texas
- 4:09Speaker 1: and that's out in Lubbock. Our old pal Joey McGuire
- 4:13Speaker 1: actually texted you, Aaron Hartigan and me, we have this
- 4:17Speaker 1: weird group text with the head coach of the Texas
- 4:20Speaker 1: Tech Red Raiders, and he texted us on Friday night
- 4:23Speaker 1: with a photo of us that he got clearly from
- 4:27Speaker 1: watching on a computer. He was in ames Iowa, of
- 4:32Speaker 1: the three of us on the set, and we're all like, hey,
- 4:35Speaker 1: good luck, you know whatever. And then they go out
- 4:37Speaker 1: and he and Iowa State their first loss of the
- 4:40Speaker 1: season and they got Bowl eligible. So, I mean, people
- 4:44Speaker 1: are doing a bit of a sigh relief out there
- 4:46Speaker 1: on the South planes, aren't they.
- 4:47Speaker 3: I think absolutely, And I think that's a huge win
- 4:50Speaker 3: for Joey McGuire.
- 4:52Speaker 4: They're calling it joe Vember, you know what I mean.
- 4:54Speaker 4: But this is there, the big win for Joey McGuire
- 4:58Speaker 4: for a lot of rings.
- 4:58Speaker 3: One obviously hitting Bowl eligible before you you know, here
- 5:02Speaker 3: at six and three, you got three games to go,
- 5:05Speaker 3: all of them winnable, you know what I mean, all
- 5:07Speaker 3: of them. You know, you play, Oklahoma State's not not,
- 5:10Speaker 3: you know, as good as we.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Thought they were going to be.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Colorado is gettable, especially there in Lubbock. This is a
- 5:16Speaker 3: team that I think being bull eligible right now is
- 5:19Speaker 3: a big coup for them. Furthermore, they won a close game,
- 5:23Speaker 3: which has kind of been a bit of a bugaboo
- 5:24Speaker 3: for them this year. They closed the game out strong
- 5:27Speaker 3: and came up with big plays down the stretch. And Furthermore,
- 5:30Speaker 3: the biggest thing is that Joey McGuire is nothing great
- 5:33Speaker 3: on the road. The Joe McGuire tuxas Tech teams, the
- 5:36Speaker 3: book on them has been like, if you play them
- 5:38Speaker 3: in Lubbock, they're a tour but if you get them
- 5:41Speaker 3: on the road, then they can be had. And certainly
- 5:44Speaker 3: to go on the road to a hostile environment and
- 5:46Speaker 3: aims where they are are dreaming big dreams up there,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and to go up there and come up with big plays.
- 5:51Speaker 4: I thought was really impressive. The other thing about.
- 5:54Speaker 3: That is is I know that that offensive coordinator Zach
- 5:57Speaker 3: Kitley's bender a tremendous, tremendous amount of pressure and a
- 6:01Speaker 3: lot of scrutiny out there. One of the things that
- 6:04Speaker 3: really impressed me was Iowa State scores kind of a
- 6:08Speaker 3: busted to a broken tackle and scores to go up
- 6:12Speaker 3: with a little over two minutes to.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Go, and Tech gets the ball back.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Needing a touchdown to take the lead, And I thought
- 6:19Speaker 3: that the patience shown by Zak Kittley in the play calling,
- 6:24Speaker 3: knowing the situation was really impressive. Knowing that your best
- 6:27Speaker 3: player on the field is your running back, Todge Brooks,
- 6:30Speaker 3: he's the best player. That's not really up for debate,
- 6:32Speaker 3: but basically not being afraid to run the ball, pick
- 6:35Speaker 3: up six yards wherever you can and just get you know,
- 6:38Speaker 3: and methodically move the ball down the field.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Give a lot of credit to you know, todj.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Groaks, to Baron Morton, to Josh Cameron, the playmakers that
- 6:45Speaker 3: they had, They came up with big plays.
- 6:47Speaker 4: But I thought that the play.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Calling on that final drive was really impressive. And for
- 6:52Speaker 3: all the slings and arrows that Dak Kittley has caught,
- 6:55Speaker 3: many of them, in my opinion, deserves, but I thought
- 6:58Speaker 3: that was a real bit of play calling.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Mat three there in the.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Final drive the Baylor TCU game several weeks ago, there
- 7:05Speaker 1: were you and I were hearing people say that that's
- 7:09Speaker 1: going to be two coaches coaching for their job and
- 7:11Speaker 1: the loser is going to be out. The interesting thing
- 7:14Speaker 1: is now they're both five and four they're both three
- 7:17Speaker 1: and three in the Big Twelve, so they're.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Both close to Bowl eligible.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I thought Mike Craven did a really fine job in
- 7:24Speaker 1: his piece that he wrote on Texas Football dot Com
- 7:26Speaker 1: about He said it wouldn't they didn't reach bowl eligibility
- 7:29Speaker 1: or any other tangible mark. But for anyone who's followed
- 7:32Speaker 1: Dave r and his program since their Sugar Bowl went
- 7:34Speaker 1: in twenty twenty one, the celebration made perfect sense when
- 7:37Speaker 1: they store in the field that sort of thing. So
- 7:42Speaker 1: I don't I've never been really comfortable in discussing coaches
- 7:46Speaker 1: job security thing.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Sure, but do you think.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's in a better spot for Baylor even though TCU
- 7:53Speaker 1: has had some struggles as well. They're both five and four,
- 7:55Speaker 1: they're both still just went away from getting into a bowl.
- 7:59Speaker 3: I think that these are two programs that you mentioned
- 8:02Speaker 3: that at five and four that feel like they are.
- 8:05Speaker 3: They could not be more different five and four, you know,
- 8:09Speaker 3: for TCU, I think for them to be five and
- 8:11Speaker 3: four right now, this feels like a real letdown because
- 8:15Speaker 3: TCU was supposed to be a team that was contending
- 8:18Speaker 3: for the top of the table, so to speak, a
- 8:21Speaker 3: team that could go out there and make you know,
- 8:22Speaker 3: make make waves and you see what you know.
- 8:25Speaker 4: The way that they've gotten to five and four, you know, with.
- 8:29Speaker 3: You know, a loss to Houston, that's that's a pretty
- 8:32Speaker 3: bad loss, right they get drilled by s of you,
- 8:36Speaker 3: and that's a game in the Iron Skillet, the final
- 8:38Speaker 3: game the Iron Skillet, at.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Least for the foreseeable future.
- 8:40Speaker 3: You got to have to lose the last second game
- 8:43Speaker 3: to tc or rather to UCF. I thought was disappointing.
- 8:47Speaker 3: You know, for them to be five and four the
- 8:49Speaker 3: way that they are, I think is diappointing. For Baylor
- 8:52Speaker 3: to be five and four, they probably got to be
- 8:54Speaker 3: turning cartwheels and wake up simply because of what they've
- 8:57Speaker 3: been able to do to get here. You know, I'm
- 9:00Speaker 3: not saying they've beaten a bunch of world beaters. They've
- 9:02Speaker 3: beaten on this three game winning street. They've beaten TCU,
- 9:05Speaker 3: Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech. I don't know if that's
- 9:07Speaker 3: necessarily you know, hanging the banner. But at the same time,
- 9:10Speaker 3: considering they lost to BYU, they got beat by Colorado,
- 9:15Speaker 3: you know, they got beat by Utah. Really they did
- 9:18Speaker 3: not have a good win right up until really probably
- 9:23Speaker 3: you know, the win over Tech is probably their best
- 9:25Speaker 3: win of the year. That to me represents I think
- 9:29Speaker 3: a real step forward, at least away from the ABYSS.
- 9:32Speaker 4: We kind of thought that the way.
- 9:34Speaker 3: This thing was going, especially after that loss to Iowa
- 9:37Speaker 3: State where they had been lost three in a row,
- 9:40Speaker 3: it felt like, Okay, this could be had real south,
- 9:42Speaker 3: real quickly here for Dave random But it seems like
- 9:45Speaker 3: they've righted the ship and now, you know, with still
- 9:48Speaker 3: West Virginia, Houston, and Kansas on the horizon, there is
- 9:50Speaker 3: a reasonable expectation down there in Waco that they could
- 9:54Speaker 3: win their final six games of the year and really,
- 9:57Speaker 3: you know, go into twenty twenty five with a little bit.
- 9:59Speaker 1: More all right, before we shift to high school, you know,
- 10:03Speaker 1: when we always do what we call the meanest thing
- 10:05Speaker 1: to each other and tell people the pig games, I'm
- 10:07Speaker 1: gonna do it on on the college level in the
- 10:09Speaker 1: state of Texas.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I'm gonna give you three games.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Can you tell me which one you would if you
- 10:13Speaker 1: were going to be in there and not working on
- 10:16Speaker 1: your playoff bracket reveal that'll be released on Saturday night.
- 10:19Speaker 1: More on that in a moment, But if you could
- 10:21Speaker 1: have your choice, of three games, would it be TCU
- 10:25Speaker 1: Oklahoma State, would it be Texas Florida, or or would
- 10:33Speaker 1: it be hard and Simmons Mary Harden Baylor rematch.
- 10:37Speaker 4: I'm so glad you brought up Hardin Simmons, Mayor and Baylor.
- 10:40Speaker 4: It's probably that one that's the game with the most
- 10:42Speaker 4: at State.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Obviously, Look, if Texas fits the bit against Florida, against
- 10:45Speaker 3: a wounded Florida team, then that sells big trouble and
- 10:48Speaker 3: that would be a giant headline, you know, certainly, And
- 10:51Speaker 3: for TCU and Oklahoma State. You know, I'm not saying
- 10:55Speaker 3: that either of those guys, you know, as far as
- 10:57Speaker 3: Mike Gundy is concerned. At Oklahoma State, Sunny Dyke TCU,
- 11:01Speaker 3: they've certainly got some friends within the program that would
- 11:04Speaker 3: keep their job relatively safe. But certainly you don't want
- 11:07Speaker 3: to lose this game.
- 11:08Speaker 4: It's kind of a must win to both those programs.
- 11:09Speaker 3: But Harden Simmons and Mayor Harden Taylor, aside from being
- 11:13Speaker 3: an outstanding a big rivalry game has major Division Three
- 11:17Speaker 3: playoff implications here and for Harden Simmons, who all during
- 11:22Speaker 3: the Mary Harden Baylor kind of dynasty under Pete Fredenberg.
- 11:26Speaker 3: For those who don't know, Harden Simmons is their art
- 11:28Speaker 3: rival and Harden Simmons was kind of their whipping boy,
- 11:30Speaker 3: I mean, playing them simple like that was the team
- 11:32Speaker 3: that that Harden and Simmons, the fight being pretty good
- 11:35Speaker 3: a couple of years, just couldn't get passed in the
- 11:37Speaker 3: American Southwest Conference. Now they meet and the shoes on
- 11:41Speaker 3: the other foot. Harden Simmons has already beaten Maryorharton Baylor
- 11:43Speaker 3: once this year. They have a rematch this year now
- 11:46Speaker 3: to kind of determine a lot of It's a nationally
- 11:48Speaker 3: ranked Division three ball game out there in Aboli this
- 11:52Speaker 3: or Steven Mill Robbins. This is going to be a
- 11:53Speaker 3: fantastic ball game. And I'm really excited to see how
- 11:56Speaker 3: that goes because again it's got wide ranging implications as
- 11:59Speaker 3: far as the Division three playoffs are concerned.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Yeah, you know Kyle Brown, the quarterback for Harden Simmons,
- 12:05Speaker 1: he's kind of had had an up and down career
- 12:10Speaker 1: and he transferred from West Texas, the former Vista Ridge Ranger.
- 12:13Speaker 1: He's actually actually kind of flourished there as all of
- 12:16Speaker 1: those Hard and Simmons cowboys have.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it's all about fit right. You know, Kyle Brown
- 12:21Speaker 3: is looting for the right spot, and the Cowboys of
- 12:23Speaker 3: Hard Simmons are certainly glad to have him, and he's
- 12:26Speaker 3: got them on the precipice of doing big things and
- 12:28Speaker 3: getting into the postseason on a roll.
- 12:30Speaker 1: All right, let's move to high school from as we
- 12:32Speaker 1: talk with Greg Tapper, managing editor Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 12:36Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about this final week of the
- 12:40Speaker 1: regular season. What is the if there's one one overriding storyline,
- 12:46Speaker 1: what is the overriding storyline this week?
- 12:49Speaker 3: I think the overriding storyline for a lot of these
- 12:51Speaker 3: is going to be which team enters the which teams
- 12:55Speaker 3: rather enter the playoffs kind of brimming.
- 12:58Speaker 4: With confidence, you want to call a moment them call momentum.
- 13:01Speaker 3: I think that there's a lot of games that are
- 13:03Speaker 3: not going to necessarily be for the district or not
- 13:06Speaker 3: going to necessarily be for you know, the final playoff spot.
- 13:09Speaker 4: There's a number of.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Those, by the way, more than twenty five of them
- 13:11Speaker 3: across the state that are legitimately playoff games, win or
- 13:15Speaker 3: go home. But I think when you take a look
- 13:17Speaker 3: at the biggest games across the state, games like Delana Park,
- 13:20Speaker 3: North Shore and Humble, Summer Cruk, games like Malakoff and Winsboro,
- 13:23Speaker 3: games like Hawley and Stanford, games like Gappoll mentioned Aquila
- 13:26Speaker 3: and Abbott. All eight of those teams are in the playoffs.
- 13:29Speaker 3: And in the case of Summer Creek and North Shore,
- 13:32Speaker 3: there's literally nothing on the line, like there's no playoff
- 13:34Speaker 3: implications at all. But I think for these programs, you all,
- 13:39Speaker 3: you know coaches tell us all the time, you want
- 13:40Speaker 3: to be playing your best football when the playoffs arrival.
- 13:43Speaker 3: The playoffs are arrive, they are getting here in a hurry.
- 13:46Speaker 3: And for these programs, I think that the overarching theme
- 13:48Speaker 3: is that, yes, Malakoff wants to win the district championship
- 13:51Speaker 3: and they want to finish ten to zero, but more importantly,
- 13:53Speaker 3: they want to be going into the playoffs brimming with confidence,
- 13:57Speaker 3: which is why they want to go and beat Winsbro.
- 13:59Speaker 3: That's kind of my overarching theme that I'm watching, is that, yes,
- 14:03Speaker 3: there are still tickets to be punched, their district championships
- 14:06Speaker 3: to be one. But I'm interested as far as the
- 14:08Speaker 3: big picture is concerned, as far as which of these
- 14:11Speaker 3: teams enter the playoffs on a hot streak and.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Which of them maybe kind of stumble into the postseason.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and we're seeing that kind of go all the
- 14:20Speaker 1: way around with what's with what's happening in some of
- 14:23Speaker 1: these districts. You know, one of the ones that kind
- 14:25Speaker 1: of flies under the radar right now down here is
- 14:27Speaker 1: Georgetown Center Park. They're meeting for a district title and
- 14:31Speaker 1: for seeding one, first place in second place in five
- 14:34Speaker 1: eighty one.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a huge game.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And for Georgetown, by the way, I mean, I don't
- 14:39Speaker 3: know that there is a hotter player in the state
- 14:43Speaker 3: of Texas than Jet Walker, the running back for Georgetown.
- 14:46Speaker 3: He's been he's been out of control last couple of weeks,
- 14:49Speaker 3: I mean averaging he's averaging something like twenty two yards
- 14:53Speaker 3: to carry his last two games. He has been out
- 14:54Speaker 3: of control there. But I think that you're exactly right
- 14:57Speaker 3: when you take a look at a game like Park
- 15:00Speaker 3: and Georgetown, Uh, there is a there's obviously things you
- 15:04Speaker 3: know on the line. You know you want to enter
- 15:06Speaker 3: there as you know, enter the best seed possible. But
- 15:10Speaker 3: I also think that when you take a look at that,
- 15:12Speaker 3: a lot of them has to do with just the
- 15:14Speaker 3: kind of confidence that these teams are.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Going to gill you onto it. I'll give you an example.
- 15:18Speaker 3: You know, the winner of this game probably going to
- 15:20Speaker 3: draw Burlson Centennial in the first round is what we project,
- 15:23Speaker 3: and then Frisco Ready in the second round, followed by
- 15:27Speaker 3: maybe a date with a team like Highland Park. The
- 15:30Speaker 3: loser of this game, you know, the loser of George,
- 15:33Speaker 3: of of Georgetown and Cedar Park could be playing Highland Park.
- 15:36Speaker 3: It's Cedar Park. They could be playing Highland Park in
- 15:38Speaker 3: the first round of playoffs. And by the way, that's
- 15:40Speaker 3: a road game. That would be Cedar Park going on
- 15:42Speaker 3: the road up to df W to play the Scotts at.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Highland Er Stadium.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Also a lot on the line, and that's I do
- 15:49Speaker 3: think that's one of the things.
- 15:50Speaker 4: You know. The relatively recent addition here is.
- 15:53Speaker 3: That teams that the UIL allows teams six and five
- 15:58Speaker 3: A the higher team to host first round playoff games, gives.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Them that option.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I think that's a good, good reason for a number
- 16:05Speaker 3: of reasons, specifically just the number of stadiums that we
- 16:08Speaker 3: need and allowing team to have the home field advantage
- 16:10Speaker 3: is good.
- 16:11Speaker 4: But I also think that.
- 16:12Speaker 3: It adds a a real incentive for these teams to
- 16:15Speaker 3: play hard and to finish out finish as high as.
- 16:18Speaker 4: High as they can.
- 16:20Speaker 3: And B I think it adds another wrinkle to kind
- 16:23Speaker 3: of the analysis that we have in these because if
- 16:25Speaker 3: it was Cedar Park versus Highland Park on a neutral field,
- 16:28Speaker 3: that's one thing. But Cedar Park going up to DFW
- 16:31Speaker 3: is a whole different animal. And so I think that
- 16:34Speaker 3: that those types of things, the little idy the little
- 16:36Speaker 3: nitty gritty things, are one of the things that we're
- 16:38Speaker 3: keeping an eye on here at the playoffs.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Kareem towards us.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Do you give midload team much of a chance against
- 16:43Speaker 1: Highland Park?
- 16:44Speaker 4: I give him some as a good mid logan team.
- 16:47Speaker 3: I think Highland Park is probably your favorite in this one,
- 16:50Speaker 3: but is on the road.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Milkan, you know, is eight and one.
- 16:52Speaker 3: They have the one loss in the year, kind of
- 16:54Speaker 3: head scratcher to Cedar Hill, but since then they've won
- 16:57Speaker 3: eight straight and I think Douglin Dell's done a great job.
- 17:00Speaker 3: The one thing I want to see is can that
- 17:02Speaker 3: can their defense kind of show up?
- 17:04Speaker 4: Their defense has kind of been hit and miss.
- 17:06Speaker 3: They will need to be sharp against what's been a
- 17:08Speaker 3: very good Highland Park offense all right.
- 17:10Speaker 1: We give you the choice of the three UH and
- 17:13Speaker 1: they've all already been mentioned, but I'm going to give
- 17:16Speaker 1: them to you anyway. Here's the choice you can have.
- 17:18Speaker 1: You can be at one of these three games. You
- 17:20Speaker 1: can be at UH Summer Creek, north Shore, you can
- 17:24Speaker 1: be at Winsboro Malakoff, or you can be at Aquila Abbott.
- 17:35Speaker 3: So the answer is probably north Shore Summer Creek just
- 17:38Speaker 3: because you know, we want to talk about seeing two
- 17:41Speaker 3: legitimate states, the state runners up from a year ago
- 17:43Speaker 3: playing one another. And it's a real opportunity for Summer
- 17:46Speaker 3: Creek UH to prove that, you know, that first half
- 17:49Speaker 3: of the north Shore game was an aberration. It's an
- 17:51Speaker 3: opportunity for that two great quarterbacks Caampa Baileys, Blake Thomas
- 17:55Speaker 3: Taken take a name at one another. Malakoff Winsbroo is
- 17:57Speaker 3: fantastic as well. It's a It's a terrific ball game.
- 18:00Speaker 3: And I want to see how the you know, for
- 18:01Speaker 3: malakof a team that has not really been tested all
- 18:04Speaker 3: that much, despite being the number one team in defending
- 18:07Speaker 3: state champs. Where are they if they go on the
- 18:09Speaker 3: road and drill wins Brow. Then I think we have
- 18:12Speaker 3: our answer but.
- 18:13Speaker 4: I gotta be honest.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Aquilla and Abbott might call him a name. Abbot's kind of
- 18:17Speaker 3: where we thought they would be. The only question for
- 18:20Speaker 3: them was what what was it look like under a
- 18:21Speaker 3: new head coach, Kyle Crawford taking of the first dad.
- 18:24Speaker 3: But we knew they were going to be very good.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Aquilla is a.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Bit of a surprise here, and the reasons they're surprised
- 18:31Speaker 3: if you haven't been paying attention to six man football.
- 18:33Speaker 3: They have a freshman spreadback he c Hennig. If you
- 18:38Speaker 3: have not heard his name, he is the next big
- 18:41Speaker 3: thing in six man football, Chess the freshman, and he
- 18:44Speaker 3: has been electrifying for this for this Aquila team.
- 18:48Speaker 4: It might be a little bit too much too soon
- 18:50Speaker 4: for Aquilla, but.
- 18:51Speaker 3: I do think that, uh, you know, I think that
- 18:53Speaker 3: he might represent kind of the future and for Abbott,
- 18:56Speaker 3: you know, an opportunity to go out there and grab
- 18:58Speaker 3: a district championship in what's I'm a good little rivalry again.
- 19:01Speaker 4: I'm really excited about Ava mcquilla.
- 19:03Speaker 3: That's that might be the one that you might talk
- 19:05Speaker 3: me into going to Cougar Stadium.
- 19:07Speaker 1: All right, if final thing, if both of these teams
- 19:10Speaker 1: finished ten and Oh, who's a better story. Saginaw in
- 19:15Speaker 1: five A Division one, Avalon in one Division one.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Boy, they're both great stories. Saginaw, I mean, guys, the
- 19:25Speaker 3: thing about Saginaw is.
- 19:27Speaker 4: They haven't been around. If you don't know, Saganaw has
- 19:30Speaker 4: not been around for all that long. I believe they were.
- 19:31Speaker 4: They opened in the two thousands sometime.
- 19:35Speaker 3: But they have been really bad kind of over the
- 19:39Speaker 3: course of their history. Coming into this year, they had
- 19:41Speaker 3: two or three winning seasons.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Ever since two thousand and six.
- 19:45Speaker 3: So to go ten and oh is to borrow a
- 19:48Speaker 3: phrase inconceivable of.
- 19:50Speaker 4: What they would have been able to do.
- 19:51Speaker 3: But I do think that, you know, when you take
- 19:53Speaker 3: a look at what Avalon's done, you know, Avalon the
- 19:56Speaker 3: team that I believe they The last time they were
- 19:59Speaker 3: undefeated was a couple of years ago, but they have
- 20:02Speaker 3: They are a team that they rise and fall very quickly.
- 20:05Speaker 3: They had that one great year back in twenty nineteen.
- 20:08Speaker 3: That's kind of the only great year they've had to
- 20:10Speaker 3: program history. So yeah, Avalon is certainly a great story.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Saganaw might get the nod, but I think that certainly
- 20:15Speaker 3: those are two unbelievable stories that that certainly came out
- 20:19Speaker 3: of nowhere.
- 20:20Speaker 2: He's Greg Temper. Follow him at Tepper.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Dave Campills Texas Football Magazine managing editor, and he and
- 20:26Speaker 1: Aaron Hartigan will hold down high School Scoreboard live without
- 20:28Speaker 1: me Friday now, although I we'll check in, we'll do
- 20:30Speaker 1: the we'll do the pop pin video thing for the
- 20:35Speaker 1: for the react on that.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Are you are you in agreement with me?
- 20:38Speaker 1: The way open the show has said, this is one
- 20:40Speaker 1: of the most important days in American history. The college
- 20:42Speaker 1: football playoff rankings are tonight.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Yeah, listen, it is, it is, it is.
- 20:48Speaker 4: It is a night that will shape that will shape America.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Is the college football playoff rankings. And also, by the way,
- 20:53Speaker 4: I mentioned this on Twitter another thinking.
- 20:55Speaker 3: This is the journalist thing, but but like this is
- 20:57Speaker 3: the one night that political reporters work late and they
- 21:00Speaker 3: always order pizza to the newsroom. And I'm like high
- 21:02Speaker 3: school football, we're working late every Friday night day.
- 21:04Speaker 4: I'm gotting off there at midnight, and.
- 21:06Speaker 1: It never happens in our place, in our room. That's true. Hey, tep, thanks,
- 21:11Speaker 1: We'll talk soon.
- 21:14Speaker 4: All right.
- 21:15Speaker 1: That's Greg Teff for managing editor. Dave Campbell's textan for money.
- 21:18Speaker 1: He's right, we were talking about that early all right,
- 21:20Speaker 1: more coming up. We'll continue on sports Radio AM thirteen
- 21:23Speaker 1: under the Zone.
