- 0:00Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus was not born in a quiet study on a peaceful afternoon.
- 0:18It was forged in the furnace of loss when a young wife and mother stood helpless on
- 0:24a shoreline and watched her world collapse beneath the waves.
- 0:29And yet, from that breaking came one of the sweetest confessions of trust the church has
- 0:34ever sung.
- 0:36This is Greg Downey, and I welcome you today to Traveler's Tales, brought to you by Enjoying
- 0:41the Journey.
- 0:43On Traveler's Tales, we pause to listen to the stories of believers who walked this path
- 0:47before us.
- 0:49As we remember what God did in their day, we pray that He will do something just as
- 0:54powerful in ours.
- 0:56Louisa M. R. Stead was born in Dover, England in 1850.
- 1:02As a teenager, she sensed God's call to missionary service.
- 1:07She moved to America, attended a camp meeting in Urbana, Ohio, and felt that call deepened.
- 1:13She longed to go to China, but frail health closed that door.
- 1:19Louisa married and began building a quiet life in New York.
- 1:23She and her husband welcomed a daughter, Lily.
- 1:27It must have seemed that life was finally settling into something steady.
- 1:31Then came the day at Long Island Sound.
- 1:35As they sat enjoying their picnic along the shore, they saw a young boy struggling against
- 1:40the waves.
- 1:41Without hesitation, Mr. Stead rushed toward the water and plunged in to save him.
- 1:48But in the chaos that so often accompanies drowning, the frightened boy clung to his
- 1:53rescuer, pulling him beneath the surface.
- 1:56In a matter of moments, both disappeared under the water, as Louisa and little Lily stood
- 2:02helplessly on the shore, watching the unthinkable unfold right before their eyes.
- 2:09No warning, no time to prepare, no goodbyes, just overwhelming grief.
- 2:18In the days that followed, Louisa wrestled with God.
- 2:23She didn't pretend that the pain wasn't real.
- 2:26But somewhere in that struggle, her heart anchored itself to a truth stronger than her
- 2:32terrible circumstance, that God had not changed.
- 2:37And from that place came the words, "'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take him
- 2:43at his word."
- 2:45Notice she did not write that it was easy to trust, nor did she say it was painless
- 2:51to trust in God.
- 2:53She said it is sweet.
- 2:55Because sweetness is not found in the absence of sorrow.
- 2:59It is found in the presence of Christ.
- 3:03Her hymn repeats the name Jesus again and again, twenty-five times in the full text.
- 3:09When everything else was taken from her, that name remained, Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him.
- 3:18Grief did not sideline, Louisa said.
- 3:21Shortly after her husband's death, she and her daughter sailed to South Africa as missionaries.
- 3:26For fifteen years she served in Cape Colony.
- 3:30Later she returned to the mission field in what is now Zimbabwe.
- 3:35When she passed away in 1917 near the Mutambaro mission, believers in Rhodesia testified that
- 3:41thousands of converts continued singing her hymn in their own language.
- 3:46Her voice lived on in their worship.
- 3:49Each stanza of her hymn unfolds like a quiet sermon.
- 3:54To trust his word, to trust his cleansing blood, to lay down sin and self.
- 4:01Trust is taking God at his word when your heart is breaking.
- 4:06It is resting on his promise when you do not understand his plan.
- 4:11Louisa Stead proved that God can be your trust in widowhood as well.
- 4:17We love to sing this hymn in calm moments, but it was written in a storm.
- 4:23Maybe you're in a storm right now.
- 4:26A diagnosis, a loss, a shattered dream, a door that closed when you thought it would
- 4:32open.
- 4:33You may not have answers, but you have a savior.
- 4:37And sometimes the deepest testimony you will ever give is not an explanation.
- 4:43It is simple trust.
- 4:45Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus, oh for grace to trust him more.
- 4:53Thanks for listening today.
