Transcript
- 0:02Yeah, lace them up another way, another easy double.
- 0:14Yeah, from the track to the rodeo.
- 0:16We talk that talk splits on the watch, but we still take the
- 0:19Mick. Dean in Perth with the long run,
- 0:20legs going, breaks the fire when the session gets thick.
- 0:23Ryan in the mix with the numbers and plans from every sauce, the
- 0:25medals. Yeah, we break it all down.
- 0:27Hard graft Monday, left about a Sunday.
- 0:31Hello and welcome back to the penultimate episode of London
- 0:35Colon, or should I now say Yamagata Colon?
- 0:40I am. I am joined by the three
- 0:42fabulous guests who've been with us all the way, Tim Vincent,
- 0:45Jake Smith and Jake Barraclough. And it's the final record pre
- 0:49London Marathon. It's race week, we're 4 sleeps
- 0:52away. It's closing in how we're doing.
- 0:55Thanks for finding time in the final days.
- 0:58Thanks for having me. Yeah, it's all come around
- 1:01pretty quick. I was sinking this week, fellas.
- 1:04It's probably been, I don't know, two weeks since we've
- 1:06recorded. I've kind of missed our little
- 1:08sessions. I feel like we've got to know
- 1:10each other a little bit and it's been a bit of fun.
- 1:12And I don't know all our other recordings.
- 1:16The race is just looming but not there.
- 1:18And yeah, it just feels like it's all come pretty quick.
- 1:21Now it's real, Yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:24How are you guys doing? Yeah, really good.
- 1:29No, I just want, like you said before this, I just want to race
- 1:33now. I'm yeah, getting there Friday
- 1:38now doing a little photo shoot with chapter guy in Camorra.
- 1:42So I'll be sending some videos in and photos.
- 1:45I'm probably the only white guy they've ever had in that photo
- 1:48shoot, but it'd be good fun. And then when it when it when
- 1:52I'm there, I think I'll take it. I'm trying to like really relax
- 1:54and like I'm going for like a dog walk and just naps.
- 2:00They're running. I'm watching the boys.
- 2:03Have you seen The Boys on Prime the TV show?
- 2:07No of it, because we've shout out Georgia Griffith.
- 2:11She's still got her account logged in on our TV here.
- 2:14So like we scrolled past it but yeah, haven't watched it.
- 2:18It's been up, I must say. Yeah, just watching that and
- 2:22just chilling out, really. Have you seen the At Home with
- 2:27the Furies? I've been watching that
- 2:29recently. He's so funny.
- 2:32I've seen some clips, they keep going off on social media.
- 2:35Yeah, he's hilarious. The whole family seems mental.
- 2:39Great fun. Yeah, it stresses me out just
- 2:43watching it, like I could not survive in a household like
- 2:46that. Jake, how are you feeling
- 2:49sitting there quietly in the background?
- 2:51What's going on over in Japan? I had to wait for a second.
- 2:54I wasn't sure when you said Jake who was being directed to, but
- 2:58I'm good, I'm good. I'm just warming up for the main
- 3:00event on Monday. Obviously we know London's the
- 3:04prelims and then we've got the real global event taking place.
- 3:09So I'm glad you gave the Yamagata Accu Dennis full glory
- 3:14in the new title. Give us a bit of a summary then.
- 3:17How does the event work? What have you got in store?
- 3:21So it's a three day echidom race, relay race goes across
- 3:29this whole prefecture. So it's a bit like, I guess like
- 3:32you've got counties back home or maybe like a state in Australia.
- 3:37This is all the different kind of areas competing against each
- 3:41other in the Yamagata prefix. Yes.
- 3:45It's just what I've moved up north to and jumping in with a
- 3:48local team defending champs and we've got to come back, deliver
- 3:52the goods. It's it's not the whole thing's
- 3:55like televised, it's in all the newspapers and stuff on the
- 3:58radio. They yeah, they really love it
- 4:00here. So should be good fun getting
- 4:02stuck in there. A nice backup to have after
- 4:05London didn't quite go to plan. And are they aware of your
- 4:09presence? Are you, are you known up there?
- 4:12Or are you just a random pale guy who's going to be on the
- 4:15start line? They'll be confused.
- 4:18The team's been keeping under wraps the the the secret quite
- 4:23mad. I think they'll probably realise
- 4:24quite quickly on the start line that I don't quite fit in there.
- 4:29But yeah, it's pretty good vibes.
- 4:32It's each leg, just completely random distances.
- 4:35It's quite good in right now. Like yeah, my shape's not
- 4:38exactly in its its best position, but it's quite nice.
- 4:42I can just absolutely RIP it. Brutal courses, like crazy up
- 4:46and down hills and stuff. And it's more you're just
- 4:48fighting for position, trying to catch the guys in front, not let
- 4:52the guys behind catch up with you.
- 4:55It's yeah, I think Echidan's great.
- 4:57It basically turns a solo sport into a team one.
- 4:59It's like you've got all the locals coming out and all these
- 5:02areas, like all the each town's coming out on the streets to
- 5:05support all the banners and all that cheering for their local
- 5:08team. Bit like, yeah, football teams
- 5:10back home. It's it's pretty cool how
- 5:11they've done that with running. So will you run every day or you
- 5:15just like you run one of the days?
- 5:19I'm running two of three days, you get 1 little recovery day in
- 5:23between and I'm back again. I've got yeah, the longest leg
- 5:27of the day, though on the first one it's like 20 K, So I don't
- 5:31know how I'm going to pull up after that because yeah, at the
- 5:34moment, even in training, anything passed about 10K and my
- 5:38body just checks out. It's like that seems to be the
- 5:40limit right now, so it could be a yeah, bit of a painful leg on
- 5:44day one, but hope you survive that rest day and then come back
- 5:47again for a slightly short one on the. 3rd and then is it point
- 5:51to point? So it's like a travelling circus
- 5:54once you've run the like, jump in a bus and follow the rest of
- 5:57the race or something. Exactly.
- 5:59All the way from the top of the prefecture to the bottom,
- 6:02staying in like hotels along the way.
- 6:04You've got, yeah, all the different support crew, the team
- 6:08fast, all of that should be good fun.
- 6:11Sounds exciting. Will you, your translator be
- 6:13with you? Of at the moment I'm having to
- 6:18self translate, which makes a struggle.
- 6:21No one on the team speaks a word of English and there's a whole
- 6:25lot of documents and all this stuff.
- 6:27So if I even make the the right leg at the right time, that
- 6:31would be the biggest success that that's honestly what I'm
- 6:35worried about. I might miss the start or go to
- 6:37the wrong place. It's very exciting.
- 6:39Well, with if you were to miss a marathon start line, normally
- 6:43something so big as London you would be tearing your hair out
- 6:46and be devastated. But it's nice that you can pivot
- 6:48into this and not have the travelling across the world
- 6:52elements. Yeah, yeah, saves exactly on the
- 6:54jet lag next year. Or I thought, though, with
- 6:58London, ever since they announced me as Jack Barraclav
- 7:02on the official elite entry, I thought they're just not on it.
- 7:07They're not worth my appearance, but we'll wait till next year,
- 7:11maybe see if we can redeem it. But yeah, I'm excited to watch
- 7:15and yeah, cheer the boys along from here.
- 7:17Sounds like it's going to be a pretty good battle I reckon
- 7:20between you 2, both coming through in outrageous shape.
- 7:24Yeah, we'll, we'll get to it. I wanted to say, Tim, you raced
- 7:28it. I think it's been that long
- 7:29since we recorded. You had your 10K over in Leo,
- 7:32didn't you? Do you want to give us your
- 7:34thoughts on that? What was the experience?
- 7:37You're absolutely spot on. It has been that long and that
- 7:40feels a while we're going now, honestly, craziest race for the
- 7:45listeners who may not know, I'm sure these guys do.
- 7:47We got 54th running 2850, I believe.
- 7:52And even the deaths of like the pro women's field, like I caught
- 7:56the pro women's winner. We started together at 7 1/2
- 8:00kilometres. So just the sheer depths of this
- 8:03race was insane, and in hindsight, like I knew I was
- 8:07going to be tied on marathon legs and whatnot and it's still
- 8:10a PB for me so I was pretty happy with how I executed it.
- 8:13But man, just a number of runners on one Rd. so
- 8:18aggressive. It like I know it's not that
- 8:21quick for like people running 10 KS, but that I felt like I was
- 8:25sprinting the whole time and then you get like elbowed and
- 8:28shouldered and whatnot. So bit of fun, but I just had no
- 8:31rhythm the whole time. Like even going around like 6K
- 8:36you're still getting pushed and stuff.
- 8:37So a good laugh and as I said, a PB so I can't turn my nose up
- 8:42too much at it. I think last time we spoke I
- 8:46didn't put a time on it, but the time I had in my head was, yeah,
- 8:49I would have liked to be about 20 seconds quicker on a
- 8:52different day. The atmosphere looked insane the
- 8:55way it like closed in on the road there.
- 8:58Yeah, so the 5K that Jimmy Gracia won was like after the
- 9:0410K by like 2 1/2 hours. So most of the town, it seemed
- 9:08like, did the 10K, pardon me. And then once we'd all finished,
- 9:13the roads are cleared and they kind of like cordon off a
- 9:16different section of course, as the 5K just stays through the
- 9:20streets. And I guess all the 10K runners
- 9:23then, which is like majority of the thousands actually just kind
- 9:26of hang around the area and line the streets.
- 9:29And it was like the French kind of cycling races or back home,
- 9:32we've got barricades at our Rd. races.
- 9:34So you actually just can't go on the road.
- 9:37Whereas like Jimmy Gracie was not even 100 meters away and
- 9:39there is nowhere for him to run. And the crowd just like parts.
- 9:44It was honestly nuts like me. And dudes were standing on the
- 9:46side of the road like someone's going to get hurt here.
- 9:48And you just hear sirens and beeping and yeah, that's coming
- 9:53down the road at 2:30 pace. So is that a half marathon and
- 9:58A10 KPB for you in this block? Yes.
- 10:02Yeah, not a bad way to prepare. Yeah, definitely.
- 10:06Like regardless how the weekend goes like this, I guess few
- 10:10months of the year of, I've definitely made progress and I'm
- 10:13proud of that. Like of course the cherry on top
- 10:15would be the marathon, but big picture in the yeah, going up
- 10:20right areas. Yeah, well, congratulations and
- 10:24the all the travel went smooth and stuff, the experience of
- 10:26getting out there, there was no random bus or flight incidents.
- 10:31It was more on the way back. We were right getting there so
- 10:33it was fine with all the performance side of things.
- 10:36But it was Easter weekend, what's the race?
- 10:40Not Rue Bay, that was a week after 2-2 Flanders was on.
- 10:44So it was just like, usually it'll be the one hour Eurostar
- 10:48train from London to Lille, but we had to fly to Brussels, get a
- 10:54train, and then there were rail buses in France because they're
- 10:59rather striking or something over the Easter weekend.
- 11:02So like we got there and whatnot, but usually a lot
- 11:06cheaper and a lot faster when it's not Easter and there's no
- 11:10cycling. Yes, we, and it's a nice way to
- 11:14like we talked about with Jake and his half marathons to break
- 11:17up the block and like just switch focus from just thinking
- 11:21about like 10 weeks down the line constantly.
- 11:23It just almost slows time down, doesn't it?
- 11:25You've got like many little breaks along the way.
- 11:29I'm really glad. Look, I had that.
- 11:33It was probably split up, I think.
- 11:35So I had three weeks after the half, three or four and then
- 11:38three or four weeks here. And in that sense, I like, I
- 11:43think the half like was really good, but I don't actually like
- 11:47going into races having almost like an inflated result.
- 11:51Like it is your best result. But you know, like cool, that's
- 11:54as good as it can get. And sometimes I find if if you
- 11:58shoot there again and you're only here, you can actually
- 12:02cause yourself to blow up. So I in a sense, like having
- 12:04that 10K, like even though it was all right, but I think
- 12:09having an all right day was, it reminds me to probably be a bit
- 12:13more sensible in London because you don't know until you get out
- 12:17there really what you're working with.
- 12:19Whereas like had a shot after, again, I'll tell you what, I
- 12:22probably would have shot a bit higher and yeah, things could
- 12:25potentially blow up. To to talk about training now,
- 12:30because all the hard work is done.
- 12:31Isn't it like literally 4 sleeps away?
- 12:35Is there a single? Obviously a block is a period of
- 12:38time where it's days on days and weeks on weeks.
- 12:41There's no single session which like makes or breaks it.
- 12:43But are there any, when you look back now, sessions where it kind
- 12:48of gave you massive confidence or session which didn't go so
- 12:52well, Nick, like doused what you thought you might be capable of.
- 12:55And this is a question for everyone.
- 12:59The, I think I covered it on here, the three by 7 K was
- 13:03probably the best 1 I had. I had one since we last spoke,
- 13:08which was about 40K running. It was 60 minute easy jog.
- 13:14I wouldn't say easy jog, it's not the right word.
- 13:15We were like 340 to 3:45, so just that kind of in between.
- 13:20Then we went into 9 kilometers. I'm going to try and get this
- 13:25right threshold K float 20 minutes or one minute on one
- 13:29minute off K float 5K pretty hard.
- 13:33And I pulled it after the one like I got 1K into the 5K and
- 13:37called it because I was just like, I've, I think I've I'll
- 13:41run my marathon if I finish this.
- 13:42So that's probably 1 where I might have lost a bit of
- 13:45confidence. But in All in all, I've never
- 13:50run a marathon block where I've nailed every session.
- 13:53So that's I'm not too worried about that either.
- 13:56It's nice that you can have that.
- 13:58You can look at it with that understanding though and not
- 14:00completely shit yourself and panic like or sessions gone race
- 14:04has gone type of thing. Yeah, I think we always walk
- 14:09like all of us, such a fine line anyway.
- 14:11And you've got lifestyle stresses, you've got all this
- 14:13other stuff, even just fatigue in itself, like you're never
- 14:17going to do everything perfectly.
- 14:18And I think having those sessions is almost good race
- 14:24practice in itself, on you go through the pain, in the
- 14:28torment, if you like, a little bit.
- 14:30And I felt like I'd seen that enough at that session.
- 14:32And I was like 4 formal K. This is, let's say that for
- 14:36London. Very good.
- 14:38The Jake Smith, you sat there like a bit of a caged animal.
- 14:41I can tell that you just rearing to go, but you're keeping a lid
- 14:44on it. What does the rest of the week
- 14:46look like between now and Sunday?
- 14:48Like when do you head down to the race hotel and stuff like
- 14:51that? I'm.
- 14:51Going to Katie's parents house because they live basically
- 14:55Stone and Jerry X with to drop the dog off tomorrow because he
- 14:59is no one else can look after him.
- 15:00So then Friday morning have to get out early 8:00 AM train to
- 15:06get to the elite hotel. Staying two nights because I
- 15:12need to do some like I mentioned before some like photo shoots,
- 15:17which is going to be quite funny and the new kit and stuff.
- 15:20So right now I'm going into this race.
- 15:23I don't have my race shoes. I don't have the shorts, I don't
- 15:26have the gels. I don't I don't have actually
- 15:28anything going into this race on me right now and so I'm hoping
- 15:32it's all there. Yeah just yeah, I'm ready I'm
- 15:36ready. That's like I feel like this box
- 15:40been good and like Tim said like.
- 15:42I think I was like comparing my sessions to last year, like I do
- 15:47lactates a lot and I've actually trained a lot easier this year
- 15:52and seen a bigger improvement. So like in the evenings for
- 15:55those people who use lactates, my lactate was used to be like
- 15:59four or five when I was doing double session days, whereas
- 16:01this year it's been maximum 3.8 on one or two sessions and
- 16:07everything else had been below 3.
- 16:09I've been able to just improve, improve, improve.
- 16:15Yeah, it's it's good. It's been, it's been good.
- 16:17But I'm just, yeah, I just did my last like I always do this
- 16:21like 10 miles sort of steady tempo session with studies in
- 16:25it. So the actual works.
- 16:27I'm not 5 or 7 K, but I always go into race needing I think a
- 16:31bit more than some people. But now it's just jogging in and
- 16:37I have a plan. I'm more than happy to say what
- 16:39my plan is. Spoke to Andy Jones and Gab
- 16:42yesterday. I won't go off it and we'll just
- 16:47see what happens on the day. Is the the media stuff you're
- 16:50doing, is that for Nike and the team or have you got stuff to do
- 16:54for like London Marathon and no, no as.
- 16:56Well, no, not nothing on the I'm not I'm not that good yet.
- 16:59I'm not that. It'll be like Paddy Mohammed,
- 17:01Mohammed Phil, you have to you have to run a 206 just to get
- 17:05there really. But now this is like, have you
- 17:08seen like DSM have posted like before boss and stuff?
- 17:12It was like Abti and Mohammed were like standing there with
- 17:16wearing the kit, the new kit. It's just to show off the new
- 17:19kit. So that's what I'm doing with
- 17:21the guys racing, nothing to do with London.
- 17:24And then and hopefully see Tim on the Friday.
- 17:28You getting on the Friday? Yeah.
- 17:32I'll be there Friday and then I shouldn't be so concerned about
- 17:35this, but I am. You said two nights.
- 17:37Will you be around Sunday afterwards?
- 17:39Yeah, I'm saying I have to stay. Yes, wait.
- 17:42Yeah, I have. To stay awesome.
- 17:45Because I could do this Nike, this thing with sports, using
- 17:48Nike on the Monday, Nike holding up me in another hotel.
- 17:52So I will be there the whole of Sunday as well.
- 17:55Yeah, easy. Looking forward to it.
- 17:59Look forward to more after the race and the race but.
- 18:02You'll be a little dusty on Monday.
- 18:04Yeah, I need to make sure I'm like not too like if I do get
- 18:08the time I need to make sure I'm not too battered because after
- 18:11probably be quite good going to a Nike, Nike thing.
- 18:17What else have we got? Oh yeah.
- 18:19So the carb load as well. Like how like serious are you
- 18:24guys with the carb load, the measure stuff or do you just
- 18:26pretty much go for it And what is kind of you go to with those
- 18:30foods when you get the free rein?
- 18:33Well, so I don't my coach actually spoke to me about this.
- 18:36He doesn't want me to think about car.
- 18:39I never really think about carb loading.
- 18:41And I know a lot of people measure and stuff and I'm like
- 18:44that that's fine. But I'm not a big fan of that.
- 18:47I don't really think you need to know as in like measure, not
- 18:52like you still need to eat more and stuff.
- 18:54But my coach base said because a reduction in training, he said
- 18:57your body knows what it's useful.
- 18:59Used to anyway, we do all these sessions, all these training
- 19:02sessions on the food. All I do is when I'm up there on
- 19:04the Friday, like Thursday, Friday, Saturday, you know, just
- 19:07have a bit bit more rice, bit more pasta, whatever, take away
- 19:12some sort of veg. He said no curries, nothing
- 19:16chili based on Friday and Saturday.
- 19:19But yeah, I think a lot of people do.
- 19:22I've spoken to a lot of people do like they do it was it like
- 19:251010 kilos knows it 10 times your body weight in carbs you
- 19:30should have or something, but it's just it's just one of
- 19:33those. It's just like we train all
- 19:36through this. I bought it because the more
- 19:39it's almost if you eat too much and your body's not used to it
- 19:41could almost affect you as well. But I don't really know.
- 19:45I don't I don't think about it. I just take out which is worse
- 19:48thing. I take out soft drinks.
- 19:49I go into beetroot juice for the week, which is it's actually all
- 19:52right and just a lot of pasta and rice and fried and Sally.
- 19:57Oh, I want to ask a question on the start line.
- 20:01I reckon I now have I know I am all for like not talk about
- 20:05waiting so but I think I have biggest BMI going into that race
- 20:09in the professionals. I don't think anyone will touch
- 20:11me. I have a 23.
- 20:13What's your BMI 23.1? How tall are you?
- 20:185 foot seven in a bit and I'm 66.
- 20:22Yeah, see that's not bad that that's a powerful unit.
- 20:26I always would have bat myself to be up then I'd say right
- 20:32right now after taking basically a month or I reckon I might have
- 20:36some heavy bit of competition. Well I'm I'm basically 6 foot
- 20:42coming in now, maybe 707170. One yeah, I've I've battered you
- 20:50that I'm sorry. Have you?
- 20:52Yeah, heavyweight division. I think like for me as well,
- 20:59it's like it means a lot this race because if I do get the
- 21:01time, it's almost like icing on the cake for what I show is like
- 21:05being having been consistent helps.
- 21:09So that's why I kind of want to get the time more than anything.
- 21:13But yeah, I might ask some of the Africans what should BMI if
- 21:15they know what it. Is surely they won't know what
- 21:19you're on about on the nitrate stuff.
- 21:22I remember pre maragami the other year I had the beetroot
- 21:26shots for the first time and then woke up early in the
- 21:30morning went the toilet and like still half asleep looking at my
- 21:35way and almost having a panic attack like oh I'm pissing
- 21:39blood. Like not only is the race off, I
- 21:42need to go get check myself into the Japanese hospital.
- 21:47I'm always like that. I seem to forget every time
- 21:50because I do them before a race and then the post race pissed.
- 21:54But maybe I'm just out of it after the race.
- 21:55But it gets me every time. I'm like, oh shit, my kidneys
- 21:59gone. It's like just pissing straight
- 22:01blood. Yeah, it's definitely a
- 22:03surprise. For the car blurred for you,
- 22:06Tim, what's your plan with that one?
- 22:10Previously I don't measure anything like Jake, but
- 22:13previously I reckon I've almost gone too far the other way.
- 22:15We're like stop, not stop running.
- 22:18But you know, you taper off so much with your exercise and then
- 22:22eat a heap and just get there and you're just feel sluggish
- 22:27and slow. So I figured I actually didn't
- 22:32do that much. I find if I load two and three
- 22:34days out, so I still eat probably a little bit more, take
- 22:38a bit of protein out, you know, don't really touch too many
- 22:41veggies. And then the actual day before,
- 22:45I try not to think about it and I just have a normal day.
- 22:47If I'm hungry, well, I'm obviously going to eat.
- 22:49But in terms of portion sizing, I eat just what I feel like.
- 22:54And I'd really try not to load too much a day out.
- 22:57And that's something I'm been trying to get better AT.
- 23:00And even see if that's what correlates to some races last
- 23:04year and things where I just felt you just feel like you
- 23:09don't get off the ground, but you can't.
- 23:10You don't know what it is. So yeah, I'm hoping it's that.
- 23:13I think it's that. So going to try Thursday, Friday
- 23:17and pretty relaxed on Saturday. Yeah I can relate to almost
- 23:23feeling shit for like 10K and the like.
- 23:25The first drink station is like your worst nightmare at that
- 23:30point isn't it? Like the thought of trying to
- 23:31get that down. Yeah.
- 23:33So I'm going to try to avoid all of that at least.
- 23:36And like, I think Jake summarized it perfectly because
- 23:39this is where I think about it. Like even training, like
- 23:42sometimes you, let's say you, you got work or whatever, you
- 23:45have a terrible day fueling, you got a big workout the next day
- 23:48and you crush it and you look back at what you've done.
- 23:50You're like, I've got no right to do that.
- 23:53And sometimes I think, not that I'm endorsing this, but their
- 23:56bodies are pretty incredible and capable of awesome things.
- 24:01And sometimes I think maybe they're needed trusted and rely
- 24:05off it a bit more in that sense. So I don't measure 10 grams per
- 24:09kilo, but I'll do my best and then from there I'll probably
- 24:13just try and back myself that I can lift when I need to.
- 24:18I've all been influenced by Joe Works it seems.
- 24:23You're getting cancer with this answer.
- 24:25You got to be careful. Just to extend the fuel and
- 24:31stuff with the drink stations. Do you both have your own
- 24:34bottles and whatever? Yeah.
- 24:37Oh, I can't reach 1. They're just out of reach.
- 24:39I've built all of mine already. I sat down yesterday.
- 24:42I'm Liam laughs at me. I'm so pedantic.
- 24:45I build little handles and they've got some nice green and
- 24:49gold tape on them with some green line trimmer cords so you
- 24:53can't miss it. I'm using the little fruit
- 24:57bottles from Tesco's. Yeah.
- 25:01So apart from putting the stuff in it, I'm actually, yeah,
- 25:04pretty. I could run the race tomorrow.
- 25:07Me or carry any gels as a backup or no?
- 25:10I'm sorry, loosey goosey. Hey.
- 25:11Oh, I don't know. I'll decide the day before.
- 25:16What about the stories of like people up the front just like
- 25:20stealing others bottles if they don't see their own and stuff?
- 25:23Is this legit? Like, have you ever had it
- 25:25happen to you? Yeah, I'll just take the next
- 25:27one along. It's No, I'm sorry.
- 25:30It sucks. No, seriously, it's just like
- 25:32it's. That's part of it happens.
- 25:34And if someone's taken mine, I'm taking someone else's If I see
- 25:37you, not if I know who it is, I'm not taking yours.
- 25:41If. I see you holding a green ESM
- 25:44bottle. I'm taking you out.
- 25:47I'm getting. This, this is, this is your
- 25:50chance to say what colour your bottle is and I won't touch it,
- 25:55but you know, seriously, you've just.
- 25:57Identified yours? If anyone listens to this,
- 26:00they'll be targets in your bottle.
- 26:02Like you always can share, I think athlete to athlete, it's
- 26:06just you can't share pace or two athlete.
- 26:08And like I had this happen to me in Frankfurt where I ran my PB,
- 26:12my bottle wasn't there at 25. And George James, one of the
- 26:15British athletes. Like there's usually enough in
- 26:19everyone's bottle where you can. I personally think that early on
- 26:23it'd be almost a shit move to not share with someone else.
- 26:26Like even a SIP will get you through 5K and have a bit more
- 26:29at the next one. And lastly, pre race, how does a
- 26:34warm up look for you guys don't know feel like for the shorter
- 26:38stuff people take warm ups so seriously X amount of minutes of
- 26:41jog and then maybe do some steady or threshold or like
- 26:45couple of reps at race pace. Whereas the marathon, I think in
- 26:50the like the less elite space, people tend to just like run up
- 26:54and down for 5 or 10 minutes. So how do you guys handle that?
- 26:58I'm like 10 minutes and a few drills and mobility things and
- 27:03probably 1 stride, maybe 2 I bet you fellas.
- 27:09I I hate all that anyone actually out to you?
- 27:12I despise it. Hey, I will just join in with
- 27:16you. So I'll just join in within.
- 27:21Yeah, sounds good. Thing is it's like like I think
- 27:27the first like 5K map like should well in London as well
- 27:31because he's downhill, relatively chill and stuff.
- 27:35And I don't know, I think a lot of people do tend to over do the
- 27:41warm up. I've heard like Yakov, there's
- 27:45what, 300 almost flat out and stuff.
- 27:47And I I sort of Steve for 1500. But even I see some of these
- 27:51like Africans before like the half marathon and stuff.
- 27:55And they're getting really quick, really, really quick.
- 27:58And I want to know the benefits of it.
- 28:01Like there must be more research needed, but I kind of want to
- 28:06and what the reason is. But yeah, I'll just probably
- 28:10just join in the team it seems about.
- 28:14You'll just wander around looking for someone who you
- 28:16know. Please let me join you.
- 28:22Regarding the actual race, then I imagine you've got, well Jake,
- 28:26you've pretty been clear with your big goal all the way.
- 28:28How about the European standard? How does like strategy fit into
- 28:33that? And have you like decided your
- 28:36race plan Now Obviously Alex Yi was pacing a male and Jake, you
- 28:41said watch between now and the the race, there'll be people
- 28:44dropping out. And then like it felt like the
- 28:46next day it popped up that a male was a DNS.
- 28:49So like who does Alex now pace and is it on the day before the
- 28:54race at the technical meeting you find out all the pace groups
- 28:57and stuff I. Think Emil Alex paces second
- 29:01group. So is it that Peter Lynch, is it
- 29:03that Irish guy? It wouldn't surprise me if him
- 29:06and Paddy go for it and there'll be a few others.
- 29:13In terms of my race plan, I am. I spoke to Annie and Gav and I
- 29:17think I'm going to go through and it'd probably be like the
- 29:19fourth or fifth group. So if you say like Alex is a
- 29:24second group, hey, that's like 206, the third group, 208 and
- 29:28the fourth group like 2 and 9:30, I'll be in that fourth
- 29:31group. I'm not going to go any quicker
- 29:33because like based off my tests and stuff, I should be able to.
- 29:37I'm going to really try negative split.
- 29:39And if I think if I go through in 6445 and 65, I'm trying to
- 29:45get towards 6445 based off better than all my other
- 29:48results, I should be very, very comfortable.
- 29:51And then I think genuinely, I think a halfway, I might be like
- 29:558th Brit. If you've seen the way names
- 29:58holding men goes race, they are, they are incredible athletes,
- 30:02but they go off every single race.
- 30:05And I think there's going to be quite a few casualties.
- 30:08And how I like to race is just pick people off.
- 30:11So yeah, I'm just, I'm, I'm literally just going to post on
- 30:15Instagram. Big ball.
- 30:17If you're ahead of me, whoever you are, I'm chasing you.
- 30:20I'm coming. But I I've heard maybe Johnny
- 30:24Mellon, only Lockley pacing and I'm really hope Johnny can get
- 30:28me to 30 K. So I will be questioning like
- 30:33really, really asking if those two could help a bit more.
- 30:37Otherwise, if they only get to halfway, it's a bit of a lonely
- 30:40race because I don't think, I don't actually know how many
- 30:43people will come in my group. I know the two away group will
- 30:46be huge on a British perspective as well.
- 30:49So just depends, but we'll find out.
- 30:52We'll finalize the actual paces on Saturday.
- 30:57And do you have to try and like negotiate in that as as an
- 31:00athlete who might be subject to receiving some benefit from
- 31:04these paces? Are you like kind of debate in
- 31:06with the others? Like I'd rather this pace type
- 31:09thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 31:09So if like, say, for example, you know, just say another
- 31:14person came with me, there was two other guys and we were like,
- 31:17OK, so all European, we're like we want 2 or 930 would probably
- 31:21say let's go for 6445. But it really depends.
- 31:26But then if it's like last year, because I was the group behind,
- 31:29you know, Alex, Johnny Miller, Jack Rowe, their group was quite
- 31:32big. So I don't actually know who
- 31:35decided, but because it was it was very strange.
- 31:38That group ahead was very up and down, so I don't actually have a
- 31:41clue bars my group. It was just mean.
- 31:44It's Canadian American guy. So it's just two of us and we
- 31:47would literally the piece of last.
- 31:48Do you want this or do you want a bit quicker?
- 31:50And we could just say we both wanted it like whatever pace.
- 31:54So I'm hoping for like a tiny. I want some people with me, but
- 31:59I just I'm not 100% sure because the you've seen the list of the
- 32:03athletes. It's it's incredible going into
- 32:05London. Tim, does Jake's plan sound like
- 32:08you'll run the first half with him, or how does your strategy
- 32:11align to that? That's exactly how I ran my PB
- 32:16in Frankfurt. It was pretty much those exact
- 32:18splits are even possibly slower. I think I was 10530 through
- 32:23halfway. So that's I'll probably go the
- 32:26opposite way this time. I don't know which speed.
- 32:29Once again, that's technical meeting stuff, but that's where
- 32:32my anxiety comes through is like the quickest I've been through
- 32:34is probably 65 something and possibly could be looking as at
- 32:39the absolute quickest 64 minutes.
- 32:42I'm hoping to pick back from that because like that, that's
- 32:45pretty damn quick to find another 201K.
- 32:49But yeah, there's a lot of merit in the negative split.
- 32:53I think every world record up from the 800 is a negative
- 32:57split. That's a fact I usually like
- 32:59quoting. So yeah, there, I think there's
- 33:03a line in there. And once again, this is all the
- 33:06bartering at technical meetings and whatnot is, as Jake was
- 33:10hinting, as it's a pretty big group.
- 33:12I think the the one up the 1208 and there's a lot of guys in
- 33:16that group that'll even want quicker, but not 206.
- 33:21So like, I don't know what's happening yet, but something in
- 33:25that middle ground would be lovely, but I don't think it's
- 33:27going to exist. Yeah.
- 33:29Will you and you and Liam be on the same team?
- 33:32They're working together to try and sort the pace.
- 33:35So is he thinking differently not to give his plan away like.
- 33:40Should be similar group, but there's like, once again, I
- 33:44think like what Jake said this, I think there'll be more than
- 33:4710. I haven't really counted, but we
- 33:50haven't even spoken on that because we shouldn't even need
- 33:54to, to be honest. I actually think there's that
- 33:55going to be that many in a few paces.
- 33:58I'd love to work with him if it came to that in the race.
- 34:03But yeah, there's there's plenty of us going to be out there.
- 34:06What's the weather forecast looking like at this stage?
- 34:09How many times have we been checking it?
- 34:10No. I.
- 34:13Think we've? The winds looks like because you
- 34:15know we go where you start, you go 1st 5K will be into a
- 34:19headwind but then I would say from 5:00 to halfway with the
- 34:23tailwind and then it majority because where it starts and
- 34:27finish we will probably have a head tailwind for majority of
- 34:30it. Yep, and it's looking Touchwood,
- 34:34not 20°. It's 10° cooler than it was last
- 34:38year, so it's going to be. So we're on.
- 34:44Yeah, can't wait to eating. We'll send you some photos after
- 34:48the race when we get both get PBS.
- 34:52Yeah, let's go with that. Yeah.
- 34:53With the drinks. You'll have what in hand?
- 34:57What will be the the go to? You know, it's a Bailey's.
- 35:01As soon as I run, I run the time, go straight to that.
- 35:06Yeah, it'd be. I wouldn't mind one of those.
- 35:11I don't really drink to make crafty things, but I've had,
- 35:13while I've been over here, some one of those Camden Pale Ale
- 35:18things and they've got nice pint glasses and I'd love to take
- 35:22pint glasses, a souvenir if I run well, because I've got a,
- 35:25I've got a stellar pint from Belgium.
- 35:27Have you ever played that game? I've heard stories is, you know,
- 35:30when like if you're on like a stag do or something, you have
- 35:33to try and sneak out something from the park and it's like.
- 35:38I've seen videos and people take like bar mats and like the
- 35:43bigger the Ottoman, the. Bigger the IT.
- 35:45Gets stupid. So people like going into the
- 35:49toilet, just finally trying to find like the sink.
- 35:56Hopefully London doesn't end up like that.
- 35:59My dad strangely went through a period where he would take a
- 36:02steak knife from the pub all the time and then I think he just
- 36:06got like addicted to it because obviously he'd got like 5 steak
- 36:10knives. You don't need any more than
- 36:11that. And the one of the staff was
- 36:14giving him a lift home once and then the knife pierced the car
- 36:18seat through his pocket and that's how he got caught.
- 36:26Jake, what will the weather be like in Yamagassa for your
- 36:29battle? Probably a little bit more
- 36:32toasty, could be a 2025. Maybe this is the turning point
- 36:38where it's like it goes from it's been well about two weeks
- 36:43ago it was like close to 0 and then it could be 30 by next
- 36:48week. It's pretty brutal.
- 36:50Luckily because it's further north, I can maybe hold off for
- 36:53another couple weeks compared to Tokyo.
- 36:55But yeah, I've been actually, I just had my alarm go off.
- 36:59I need to remember to switch the sauna on because I've been
- 37:02hammering the heat training. But after this question, I'm I'm
- 37:06just going to go and flick that on.
- 37:07That's my post recording training to finish up the day.
- 37:12Yeah, I've been going hammer on that.
- 37:13I'm not taking chances this time.
- 37:16And will will you be doing like anything different in terms of
- 37:18fuelling and stuff for that or you just roll with it?
- 37:22Just roll with it. I feel anything less than a
- 37:25marathon you don't have to massively worry about.
- 37:29I think, like I never would take jails during a half, like maybe
- 37:34a halfway, but really see if you've got a decent breakfast
- 37:38in. I might have a jail on the start
- 37:40line. And now pretty much, yeah.
- 37:42Get you through I reckon. Just going back to Tim and Jake
- 37:46with London, you know, like after a race, after a marathon,
- 37:50to me it always becomes apparent like something like next time in
- 37:55the block, I'm definitely doing this, like whether it be
- 37:58strength or stretching or change, the type of sessions and
- 38:01stuff at this stage. Like, it's not really the time
- 38:05and place to be reflecting like, but is there anything obvious
- 38:07that sticks in your mind now? Like something you'll look to
- 38:11implement in the next block? Great question and I'm sure I'll
- 38:15have an answer for you after the marathon itself.
- 38:21Been very lucky being over here and not working and whatnot and
- 38:24living. I guess you could say a pro
- 38:26athlete lost all for a few weeks.
- 38:28So yeah, I've been very lucky thus far and don't have an
- 38:33answer for you just yet. Hope to continue living the pro
- 38:37athlete lifestyle. Don't change anything, keep it
- 38:40like that. Now I'll be getting the job when
- 38:42I get back. But yeah, hopefully at some
- 38:45point in the future, yeah, just get leave without pay I think or
- 38:49something. It's it's helped having five or
- 38:51six weeks to really knuckle down.
- 38:56Do you miss at Brisbane at this stage?
- 39:00Miss family, friends, my partner.
- 39:04I'm not sure if I miss Brisbane itself but no I'm keen to go
- 39:10home like next week. I think it's about a week till I
- 39:13fly out and I am excited. I've started thinking about it a
- 39:16bit more, but it's probably more the things associated with home
- 39:20and the people rather than the actual city.
- 39:23Yeah, nice. And we did have a couple of, oh,
- 39:27actually tell you what, we'll speak about the field in itself
- 39:29because Jake, you, you touched on it.
- 39:32Who? Who do you think Will could win?
- 39:35And there's so many who could win.
- 39:36But where do you thoughts lie? Article I'm going to go Rd.
- 39:41Tamora, I'm going to go Rd. I'm just going to abuse him on
- 39:47Friday and tell him you better win now.
- 39:52I don't know she's like I know it's going to go out fast.
- 39:56I know, but in terms of if you see like.
- 40:01Him the lot like you saw what he didn't Cardiff.
- 40:03I know that was years ago world heart and stuff, but in talent
- 40:05look like a championship racer. He is very like how many medals
- 40:10he's won globally and many when he's in form like he won Rock
- 40:15Down marathon. I think it was last year.
- 40:20It's just it's one of those if it does go out with like 201,
- 40:23which will probably happen, probably won't be able to hang
- 40:27on. But if there if say the Pacers
- 40:29can't get that far and they back start backing off, he will he
- 40:33will be lethal. I just want to go pit Rd.
- 40:36So and I should actually Paddy diva.
- 40:39Let's just go for it. Let's just go Paddy Diva to win.
- 40:45Imagine he just flies in and just causes chaos.
- 40:52But yeah, it's like a few, quite a few people have aren't
- 40:59starting anyway. But in terms of the British
- 41:03point of view, it's very, very, it's still very, very strong.
- 41:06It's a shame Emil's not doing it because he would have run
- 41:09something ridiculous. And then you like you, you guys
- 41:13came on to mention all the big names in the last podcast
- 41:16anyway. But yeah, it's it's annoying.
- 41:21We're actually racing a bit. It's been like the last people
- 41:24to actually find out who won. But I'll be good.
- 41:30Tim, do you have any interest or you just all about what you can
- 41:34do, not really thinking about the other guys?
- 41:36I'd love to have watched this race.
- 41:38It is. I think I counted there's like 8
- 41:42or so like headline as you could almost say, and I can't find
- 41:47them. The fact that they've got eight
- 41:48in one spot, my picks probably SAR Way.
- 41:55Once again, I think he won in Rieger and he's had a few wins
- 41:58now. I don't know his resume off the
- 42:00top of my head, but I think after being there in Rieger and
- 42:05once again kind of seeing the names that he bait there,
- 42:08there's one other race that I'm forgetting where he's just
- 42:11absolutely demolished a world class field.
- 42:14Yeah, I think he's one to watch. What chapter guy is he going to
- 42:18go for two hours again? He's just a loose cannon, isn't
- 42:23he? Could do absolutely anything.
- 42:26I'm keen to see the debut of Kjoja and Haggos Kebra wet as
- 42:31well. I think he's flown under the
- 42:34radar a lot. It obviously is a debut, but
- 42:38that he's insane talent and he's done some crazy things on the
- 42:42track. Yeah, pretty exciting.
- 42:46And guarantee two of those 8 will come back to us.
- 42:49Guarantee it. Fix it's crossed Yeah, I.
- 42:52Think they will. They, they could actually like
- 42:56pull off and quit and we wouldn't even know.
- 42:59Well, that's. Well, I think they won't come
- 43:01back. Yeah, they'll be gone.
- 43:02You never see them stop suddenly.
- 43:04You'll have gained 10 places out of nowhere.
- 43:07But you don't even know you've got the 10 places, do you?
- 43:09Like that's. When you're not going to finish
- 43:11when a meal came up. Search.
- 43:13He was apparently he didn't know.
- 43:15Yeah, with four miles go, he's 10.
- 43:17And then he came out the bridge and then he crossed the lines
- 43:19like, what the hell? And he's third overall.
- 43:23That's crazy, yeah. We had a couple of questions
- 43:27come in. So Pat Diskin who coaches Owen,
- 43:30who's the the Irish Co host on our show, he's asked a couple,
- 43:34he said how's your sleep been so far this weekend?
- 43:36Do you expect that to change as we like approach the race from
- 43:40now? I normally just have two hour
- 43:43naps every day on top of nine hours.
- 43:46I don't I like I said before, I don't really have the most
- 43:50interesting life. Like when I saw Tim and Liam,
- 43:52that was probably the highlight of my month.
- 43:56So I really focus on, I'm very focused on sleep and I think I
- 44:03have always been and it really hasn't helped my height, but I
- 44:08do try and get quite a bit. I'm quite a big advocate for
- 44:12naps. I'm a big fan of them.
- 44:15Yeah. Trying to go to bed a bit
- 44:16earlier because I know Sunday, Saturday night, you probably
- 44:20won't sleep too well. Yeah, we'll have a nap the day
- 44:25before as well. Yeah.
- 44:28Which of chocolate ready to go? Something going like 90,
- 44:34probably 9 hours, which was creeping down last week.
- 44:37And then birds myself, we just pulled the bedtime probably back
- 44:41to 839 and got the luxury now to just sleep till whenever you
- 44:47wake up. So I think I got nine and a half
- 44:5010 hours last night. I don't typically nap, but I
- 44:54will if I feel like it. And then the only other thing
- 44:56instead of napping is I'm just off my legs.
- 45:00Like, I'll make sure I'm sitting or lying down most of the week.
- 45:06I do find if I get a bit restless, I'll just go get a
- 45:08coffee or go for a little tiny walk.
- 45:11I definitely might be doing that after probably Thursday.
- 45:16But yeah, probably 10 hours. I usually feel all right because
- 45:19I'm probably used to functioning off a lot less back home, which
- 45:22probably isn't a good thing. He's just sleeping like absolute
- 45:26kings. This is making me laugh.
- 45:29Jake Jake B. Do you get a similar amount or
- 45:32what? They love the early starts here.
- 45:36So I'm, I'm probably an 8 hour man because like yeah, if you're
- 45:41training with a group, they like starting at 6:00 AM.
- 45:46So it's you kind of got to be in that routine.
- 45:48So I'm usually maybe a 5:50 kind of schedule, maybe try and push
- 45:54it, be in bed by like 9 just winding down and I can't do the
- 45:57nap at all. I feel horrendous after napping.
- 46:01So yeah, definitely just get it all done in the night and then
- 46:04power through the day. Advocates of magnesium to
- 46:09support sleep to take any supplements like that.
- 46:12Every single evening, Yeah. Yeah.
- 46:14But if it does a thing but I'm bought into it, whether it's
- 46:17placebo or not, yeah, I'm bought in.
- 46:20I've never tried it to be honest.
- 46:22I probably should. I don't think you need to.
- 46:26Maybe. Yeah, more than enough.
- 46:27Sleep. Yeah, Yeah.
- 46:28Yeah, there's already. I remember I tried it one, one
- 46:33night and I've never gone back to it because I had like the
- 46:35most lucid sleep ever. It was just like the movie
- 46:39Inception. It felt like I was in these
- 46:40different levels of sleep. I was like, I just put it down
- 46:44to having magnesium for the first time.
- 46:45I was like, I'm not touching that stuff again.
- 46:48To be fair, I do remember thinking like when I first
- 46:51started taking it, I was dreaming more.
- 46:53Maybe that's it. Yeah.
- 46:54Because I was just almost freaked out.
- 46:56I was. It was just, yeah.
- 47:00Lost control whilst we're on supplements as well.
- 47:04Someone else Rachel McGuinness asked.
- 47:07Do you take any additional pre race supplements?
- 47:10I like that you wouldn't typically take in weeks a week
- 47:13routine. Gnomeo, bicarb, ketones,
- 47:15nitrates, or anyone check iron levels and have an infusion.
- 47:21That was that was basically my whole 2122.
- 47:26So broken nerves and teeth. I take I don't take any of that
- 47:30stuff because my point of view is we've been how many years
- 47:36we've run without all this new stuff?
- 47:38And I've run all these times without it.
- 47:41And I don't really think you need it.
- 47:43All I take is like a caffeine tablet before the race.
- 47:46And I know there is like all this literature out there saying
- 47:50how helpful is, but I'm not a fan.
- 47:53I'm just, you know, you just have to grind out used to.
- 47:57So I just ate a cap me tablet and yes, get on with it.
- 48:02Just run hard. Is a true way.
- 48:04They also used to roar dog the marathon.
- 48:06No water, no, no Joe is nothing could go proper.
- 48:10Always good. I might just not wear carvings
- 48:14as well. That exactly.
- 48:17You've really got some balls there.
- 48:20Timmy, you on any of those big supplement?
- 48:22Well, those popular supplements, shall we say?
- 48:26Apart from a double espresso or triple, depending how the gut's
- 48:30feeling on the morning and a cod mix.
- 48:34That's the other thing I was saying, which I don't know
- 48:36should be part of normal routine, but that's something
- 48:38I'll add in on the race weekend. Jake, if you see me without my
- 48:44bottle in the hand from 24 hours out, you can slap me.
- 48:49They'll carry that around. I usually in a sense supplement
- 48:53with just sip in a carb mix and then caffeine.
- 48:56I'm once again pretty loosey goosey.
- 48:58I'll just take it as it comes. Jake Barclough, you're the walk
- 49:03in marketing machine. You'll have things falling out,
- 49:05your pockets going to you have my Casa.
- 49:09I'm I love a little caffeine tablet as well.
- 49:12Got to get that in be true. No, Meo, when you're as unfit as
- 49:18me, you got to take every little advantage you can get.
- 49:23I actually don't reckon the Nomio tastes as bad as like,
- 49:26well, you didn't feel like you're drinking broccoli
- 49:28sprouts, put it that way. It does at 5:00 AM in the
- 49:32morning when you're rolling out of bed and slamming.
- 49:35That doesn't exactly go down a treat.
- 49:39Jake, will you, will you be tied to heart rate during the race?
- 49:42So as that kind of all go out the window and you're just like
- 49:44the pace group you locked in. No, so I will stick with the
- 49:48pace group halfway, but my heart rates like 170 through halfway
- 49:53or one below 175. It just means I can go even
- 49:57harder in the second-half of them.
- 49:59I will completely use it and for anyone in my group, I will.
- 50:03I'm just telling you because with the Huawei watch, I will
- 50:05have every K the guy talks to me as notice and I will have the
- 50:11I'm putting on the what's it called, the pace guy.
- 50:16So he saw put in 305 and he tells you how far ahead or
- 50:20behind you are of the pace that every time.
- 50:24You'll be getting sideways looks in that Group I.
- 50:27Wish you can't change your voice yet.
- 50:29I've asked them and stuff. Yeah, that so I imagine having
- 50:33like Yoda or someone mid London Marathon.
- 50:37But yeah, so I reckon I genuinely think he'll go off 50
- 50:41times, like speak, watch. So if you think about that, just
- 50:46think so every 2 1/2 minutes will go off.
- 50:49That's all I need to think about.
- 50:51People might be trying to run off or drop back because they're
- 50:54sick of it. You might blow your own group up
- 50:56because of the Huawei man. Yeah, it's just a bit of fun,
- 51:00isn't it? I need to make a bit fun.
- 51:01I'm going to look like the knob. I'm going to wear backwards hat
- 51:05and glasses, might write on my shoes.
- 51:07I do all that stuff. Soon as you mentioned shoes,
- 51:10what are the weapons of choice for you both?
- 51:13I have to go out that yellow A5 threes.
- 51:16I think most in Nike guys, my Nike agent is bringing me some
- 51:22more, but I think there's where some of the Nike guys are have
- 51:26to wear them. So Abdeena Gay did in Boston as
- 51:30well. But The thing is, you know, keep
- 51:35chogi. Sorry, not very chapter guy,
- 51:37keep limo and stuff. They'll probably have the alpha
- 51:39force to be honest. But again.
- 51:43You see, it looked like Charles Hicks had the protos on with a
- 51:46blacked out force. I couldn't tell what they were.
- 51:50Think so. I see now, yeah, his brand was a
- 51:54bit nuts. I'm glad he's.
- 51:56I'm glad he's not anymore. Tim, what are you in?
- 52:02No rays, just the the usual. I'm going to be in the Ray 2
- 52:09version 2, which will be what I wore in Ghent.
- 52:14So it's approved by World Athletics.
- 52:17It's just the more stable Ray. And then the version one of the
- 52:22Ray 2 was the only real difference that I can tell
- 52:26slight geometry. And then underneath it was no
- 52:30real tow guard, I think to save weight and only lasted for me
- 52:34like 6-7 or 8 kilometres. Whereas now they've got this tow
- 52:37guard, similar geometry and it's like made the world of
- 52:42difference. It's beyond light.
- 52:45So it's so actually, we'll see how we go.
- 52:47This will be another thing to reflect on.
- 52:49I've never worn a shoe this light or like people wore them
- 52:53at Boston. People have run so well
- 52:55internationally in them. I don't know too many Aussie
- 52:59ASICS runners that have worn the Ray yet for Mara.
- 53:03So I figure screw it, let's give it a whirl.
- 53:06And I think I'm going to have a lot of fun in that shoe.
- 53:09And I think this year in like Australia, worldwide, it's
- 53:14already a marathon shoe, but I think Aussies are going to
- 53:16commit to it this year in the marathon.
- 53:19There you go, well your review will be will mean the world to
- 53:22everyone then. So and Jake, it was a cool to
- 53:26see your teammate Clayton tearing it off at Boston.
- 53:30It was mad. I feel like if you watched his
- 53:32series, he was kind of making out like he was scraping Violet,
- 53:36hanging on. So, oh, he's not going to come
- 53:38in in great shape and then go and pop pops that.
- 53:41It does look like the best weather day possible.
- 53:45Like, oh man, I wish I'd been in Boston.
- 53:47I guess if you get a tailwind like that, then yeah, you can
- 53:51see what doesn't count for records in a way, but crazy
- 53:54times out there. Yeah, he smashed it looking
- 53:57fresh in the the blue Brooks singlet.
- 54:01And I think he had the Hyperion 6 on like the elite ones.
- 54:05So I think, I don't know if I can use it.
- 54:06I think they're coming out in the summer, maybe officially.
- 54:09But yeah, they're they're very nice.
- 54:11I've been rocking them. With you saying there about his
- 54:14like storyline and the build up and stuff on YouTube, he's he
- 54:17must have been following your channel and like stole your
- 54:19script. I know, I know.
- 54:21Can you give me a shout out at least?
- 54:23Come on. We got another question, which I
- 54:28guess, Jake, you could maybe answer this one best from Owen's
- 54:31coach again, what's morning heart rate compared to normal,
- 54:34if you like usually checking this stuff?
- 54:36So I find my morning heart rate when I run is lower than the
- 54:40evening. And I thought I was a norm, but
- 54:44I've spoken to a few people and it's and there's is opposite.
- 54:49But my my thing is they the people whose heart rates are low
- 54:54in the evening, they normally have a full time job.
- 54:56Maybe it's because they're going through the whole day and they
- 54:58get a bit tired and more fatigues in the evening, but I
- 55:01don't, I don't know what the actual signs is and what it
- 55:05should be, but mine's always lower in the morning.
- 55:07Even if I run the exact same pace in the morning, it's lower,
- 55:10in the evening, it's higher. It always happens.
- 55:13And when I know I'm fatigued, when I'm struggling, it's when
- 55:16my heart rate in the evening is lower than the morning.
- 55:19That's when I know, yeah, it's like a red, a little red flag
- 55:22for me, but I know a lot of people are the other way rounds.
- 55:28Maybe it's the food you're eating.
- 55:31Maybe it's because like maybe if I did had a full time job, maybe
- 55:35it would be the other way round. But I really want to know the
- 55:39reason behind why mine is like that because I don't know many
- 55:43other people who are the same as me.
- 55:45Do you both follow or do you all follow Graham Fisher overseeing
- 55:49him on Strava? Because it might be a bit more
- 55:52relatable for you guys than it is to me, but his heart rate
- 55:55output versus his paces, like I struggled to comprehend it.
- 55:59You think his heart rate is so if you looked at his Max and
- 56:02actually he's racing heart rate. So for example when I did a
- 56:05testing I got to 197 and I can hold like 185 for 1/2 marathon
- 56:11whereas his actual marathon heart heart rate are
- 56:15significantly less his. Yes, it's all relative.
- 56:19So it's all that that's the that's the problem because it's
- 56:23almost, it's all well and good to have very low heart rates,
- 56:25but if you can't actually get it that high, then it's also you
- 56:30also have to look at it because I always think when athletes
- 56:34start to get fresh, the heart rate actually increases because
- 56:37it, when you're fatigued, it's for suppressed, whereas when you
- 56:40become a bit more fresh, it's high.
- 56:41And a lot of people, a lot of people I helped coach and stuff,
- 56:44they were getting a bit worried going to these races because the
- 56:46heart rate was high. And all I said is you're fresh.
- 56:49And then they all ran PBS. So it's, there's so many.
- 56:52I'm a big fan of heart rate, but there is a lot of factors that
- 56:55can influence it. And I don't think anyone should
- 56:59compare heart rates with anyone because everyone's is so
- 57:02different. And if you start comparing
- 57:05yourself to the likes of Cranfish and other people, it
- 57:07will really it can cause a lot of like stress and stuff.
- 57:12Are you one of the Do you join the taper as your body comes
- 57:17around and your legs get fresher?
- 57:18Will you allow yourself to like jog a little bit quicker or do
- 57:21you just stick to? Usual pieces like today I took
- 57:24that like last session and tomorrow I'll just like I'll
- 57:26just jog like I won't do anything, just jog slowly.
- 57:30And I liked like yesterday around 517 K with my my
- 57:34girlfriend and stuff. I will just, it's like, like Tim
- 57:38was saying, the work's done and I'm not going to gain anything
- 57:43now. So even if they're fresh, just
- 57:47want them even more fresh. So yeah, that's a, that's a plan
- 57:52of action. Couple more questions Dan Wayne
- 57:57is asking you, Jake saying the top of British distance running
- 58:01right now is crazy. Where do you see yourself being
- 58:04able to improve and stay competing at the top end and who
- 58:08do you think will be the first Brit on the 205 and how far or
- 58:12close are we to that? I think whether within the year,
- 58:15I think if Emil steps up, he could do it in a heartbeat.
- 58:18Patty Diva is the next person who could do it.
- 58:21And it would not surprise me if he actually just did.
- 58:23Like you have to. I know it's a perfect day in
- 58:25Boston, but he did beat Charles Hicks in New York and Charles
- 58:28Hicks just ran 204 and he put over a minute on him in New
- 58:32York. So it's like he's the big, he's
- 58:35the next big person who can do it.
- 58:37If it if it doesn't happen in London, I can guarantee will
- 58:40happen the next year if he does another one.
- 58:42I don't know if he's doing the track.
- 58:44And to me, the, the thing I'm lacking the most is if you look
- 58:48at Emil, Jack Rowe, Paddy, if you look at their mile times,
- 58:53for example, compared to mine, it's stupid.
- 58:56They've all like, they've all I need to get.
- 58:58I want to break 4 minutes a mile.
- 59:00Like after this marathon, I do really need to focus on that
- 59:03speed work because that's what Ian Philip Sessman like you look
- 59:07at all their speed and that turnover.
- 59:09That's what I don't have at the minute.
- 59:11So it's basically not not working on the Robic side, but
- 59:14almost voting on the shortest stuff in the next block to
- 59:18ensure I can actually keep up with these guys.
- 59:22Because look at what Jack Rowe and Patty went through New York
- 59:24half and they went through in sub 28 just for the 1st 10K just
- 59:28because they wanted to. And if I did that just on a 10K,
- 59:32I'd be absolutely thriving. So I'm still a bit behind, but
- 59:37that's, that's what I'm trying to do.
- 59:39I'm trying to keep in sport for a lot longer and just keep
- 59:41building like small progress every race basically.
- 59:46Yeah, nice. And Tim, Dan also asked you a
- 59:49question. Obviously London's an incredible
- 59:51race as a sub 210 runner at a time where perhaps 207 is the
- 59:56new 209. How important is chasing faster
- 59:59times, chasing a faster marathon course as these days to keep a
- 1:00:06PB up there with the best Aussie marathoners?
- 1:00:09And do you have plans to do so in the near future?
- 1:00:14I with a lot of that question, I'm not as time specific as
- 1:00:18that, if that makes sense that the times are nice, but I kind
- 1:00:21of see it in a sense where like Jake was hinting at with his
- 1:00:25progression, he's got areas he wants to work on.
- 1:00:27I've I've also identified that exact same thing after this
- 1:00:31marathon, I'll be doing a lot more shorter stuff.
- 1:00:35If my coaching myself is successful at kind of actioning
- 1:00:37those goals and those areas I want to work on, the times will
- 1:00:41come. I absolutely agree.
- 1:00:44Like two O 7's, a new two O 9 and whatnot.
- 1:00:46It's only going to keep going that way.
- 1:00:49There's no point stressing and getting worked up about it or
- 1:00:52entering a race and going on so focused on.
- 1:00:56I actually think that's when races fall apart is when you go
- 1:00:58in them with such a specific rigid time goal.
- 1:01:02Because at the end of the day, it's a race.
- 1:01:04You need to be flexible. Things happen and if you stress
- 1:01:07yourself out about one time goal, you'll also lose the fun
- 1:01:12of it. So don't.
- 1:01:14Not really too fast, about time. Yeah, more process orientated
- 1:01:18and the outcome will look after. Itself.
- 1:01:20Absolutely. All right, guys, we've.
- 1:01:23We've breached the hour, Jake. Barclough will you be you're
- 1:01:26going to live stream the race on YouTube and provide some
- 1:01:28commentary or what now I don't need to live stream it the.
- 1:01:33The Japanese. People handling that I'll, I'll
- 1:01:35ping up a little link on the story so they they might be very
- 1:01:39confused while a whole load of foreign comments start flooding
- 1:01:41in on this niche. Little local race on YouTube,
- 1:01:46but we'll let the ranted Japan army take over there.
- 1:01:49What time does it start in Japan?
- 1:01:52Is it early? Oh wait, it's going.
- 1:01:55Oh, it's a nightmare for you like in the.
- 1:01:57UK it would be oh, hang on Monday at about 3:00 AM.
- 1:02:04You'll be in the clubs at that point.
- 1:02:08OK, that's perfect. Come back from the night out.
- 1:02:11And you've got you've got an accident to watch.
- 1:02:13Yeah, but isn't it the whole day?
- 1:02:16It's a. Good 4 hour.
- 1:02:19Part of it, I know it's going to be hard.
- 1:02:23To to pick that over the. The the pub celebration, but
- 1:02:27that's going to be a tough call there.
- 1:02:28And does your team have a chance of winning?
- 1:02:31Yeah. I think we should win.
- 1:02:34Hopefully it's a little unfair because all the other teams are
- 1:02:39amateur runners and then where the sort of professional team
- 1:02:43that I've moved up here to train with obviously a base in this
- 1:02:47town, like it's tiny little town.
- 1:02:49So you just got like this bunch of ridiculously good, like elite
- 1:02:53runners competing against guys like full time jobs and stuff.
- 1:02:57So it's slightly unfair. But yeah, yeah, we'll hopefully
- 1:03:01take the dub. You say that you should win, but
- 1:03:04Arsenal should also win the league.
- 1:03:05And look what's happening. Don't talk about it, but.
- 1:03:10We need the. Champions League.
- 1:03:12That's all good as long as Spurs go.
- 1:03:16Down. That would just be, that would
- 1:03:19be a consolidation. At.
- 1:03:21Least so. God it would be painful.
- 1:03:24I don't know how we've thrown it away like that.
- 1:03:26Side eyed by Holland, I just could not stop laughing.
- 1:03:29At the end of the game, this game is, it's still not over.
- 1:03:34It's. Still not over.
- 1:03:38I said that watching Liverpool like years ago.
- 1:03:41And I think Liverpool won their last nine inside City and City
- 1:03:45just closed it out, not the team lost for 9:00.
- 1:03:48So if City's anything like that, yeah, they're tough.
- 1:03:52They closeout a season well City and we're struggling to even win
- 1:03:561 so. Yeah, looking good in shape I.
- 1:04:02Think if your fixtures are slightly.
- 1:04:03More favourable, aren't they? Yeah, but that's Champions
- 1:04:06League. Semi might be more of a
- 1:04:08hindrance than a hell yeah. Sure, you try and double up and
- 1:04:11then could end up blowing. All of that which Liverpool have
- 1:04:14done the other year as well. Remember when there was all the?
- 1:04:16Quadruple talk and then we ended up with like in a fake or.
- 1:04:24Tim, have you managed to get yourself to any more Premier
- 1:04:26League football over there? No, we've.
- 1:04:30Haven't been to any more live. Games, but definitely just been
- 1:04:32tuning in and watching it. Like I think Saturday I watched
- 1:04:36there were four different game slots I think, or three, and I
- 1:04:38was just on the couch from like midday to 7:00 or whatever it
- 1:04:42was. And I watched every game.
- 1:04:43So that's been a nice change in itself, even if I'm not at the
- 1:04:47games to just actually be able to watch them.
- 1:04:48And back home, if I do that, I'd fall asleep at half time.
- 1:04:54I find 15 minutes at that time and 9, I'm out.
- 1:04:57So it's good to actually be able to pay attention to it.
- 1:05:00How much better is the Sky Sports coverage and the.
- 1:05:03Pundits than like the stuff on Stan.
- 1:05:08I'm still watching. Stan, but I won't comment on
- 1:05:11that. Yeah, yeah, yes, guy, I'd be
- 1:05:16good. But yeah, no, I'm still on Stan.
- 1:05:18And to be honest, I watched it on mute half the time when I
- 1:05:21said VPN. Then I was waiting for Jake
- 1:05:23Barclough. To pop up with an endorsement
- 1:05:29just. Start just start spitting some
- 1:05:30bars I need to I need. To really well just because I've
- 1:05:37asked for FA Cup final tickets for me and my mates, for my my
- 1:05:44agent to find. The faster I run, the more
- 1:05:48chance he'll help you get me there.
- 1:05:50Elevate the profile. Well, fellas, it's been a
- 1:05:54pleasure. I wish.
- 1:05:55You all the best of luck. I hope that the next four days
- 1:05:57absolutely fly by. And then you, you just stood
- 1:05:59there on the start line ready to wrap.

- 1:06:04I look forward to chatting after.
- 1:06:06Anyway, I'll be going to do a cool.

- 1:06:35Race. They've just gone.
- 1:06:36Completely. Wrong somewhere.
