- 0:00New financial filings just revealed what Elon Musk probably
- 0:03didn't want you to see. X, formerly Twitter, of course,
- 0:07lost 58% of its revenue in 2024. Now documented an official UK
- 0:14regulatory filings that dropped this week that we spent the last
- 0:18two years hearing about advertisers fleeing, about the
- 0:21rebrand chaos, about whether Musk's social media gamble would
- 0:25pay off. Now we have the answer, and it's
- 0:27brutal. This is particularly fascinating
- 0:30because 2024 was supposed to be Musk's victory lap.
- 0:34He became the most politically influential tech billionaire in
- 0:37America, practically lived at Mar a Lago with Donald Trump,
- 0:41helped shape a presidential administration as well.
- 0:45His visibility had never been higher, and yet X was bleeding
- 0:50out. And I've also got some news on
- 0:53the EU launching a formal investigation into Grok over
- 0:56deep fake porn. Plus a genuinely surprising
- 0:59partnership between Tesla and Warren Buffett's company, and
- 1:03we'll get right into that after this very short break.
- 1:08So let's talk about what a 58% of revenue decline actually
- 1:11means for X. When Musk bought Twitter in late
- 1:1420/22 for 44 billion, a lot of people thought he overpaid for
- 1:18it. Now, the bull case was that he'd
- 1:21unlock value by cutting costs, removing what he called bloat,
- 1:25and turning the platform into an everything app.
- 1:28And the bear case was that advertisers would flee, the
- 1:31platform would become toxic, and the whole thing would spiral out
- 1:35of control. Now, these UK filings suggest
- 1:40that the bears were right. Now, these are specifically UK
- 1:43revenue numbers, but they're a proxy for the broader health of
- 1:46the company because the UK is a major advertising market.
- 1:50And when brands have pulled back, they're pulling back kind
- 1:54of everywhere. It's a it's a litmus test.
- 1:58And here's what's interesting about this.
- 2:00Musk has been adamant publicly that X is doing fine.
- 2:04He's pointing to engagement numbers, to new features, to the
- 2:07premium subscription tier. But engagement revenue are
- 2:11completely different things. You get 1,000,000 of people
- 2:15scrolling and still watching your ad business collapse.
- 2:18Advertisers don't just want your eyes on the product.
- 2:22They want it to be safe and they want predictability.
- 2:25They want to not wake up to headlines about their logo
- 2:28appearing next to something that makes their PR team cry tears of
- 2:33sorrow. And X under Musk has been the
- 2:37opposite of predictable. The timing makes this even more
- 2:40striking. Throughout 2024, Musk was
- 2:43everywhere, posting constantly, engaging with political figures,
- 2:48hosting Twitter Spaces with presidential candidates.
- 2:51If personal brand translated directly to business success, X
- 2:55should be printing money. Instead, the opposite happened.
- 2:59The more visible Musk became, the more nervous advertisers
- 3:02got. There's a lesson in there
- 3:04somewhere about the difference between attention and trust.
- 3:08Now I trust that you are subscribed to this channel.
- 3:12I've been digging through the analytics of the show and
- 3:13noticed that 39% of you are following the show and I am
- 3:17forever grateful for you. And the other 61% of you have
- 3:21probably listened to a few episodes, just forgot to hit the
- 3:23subscribe or follow button. So if you could do that right
- 3:26now, that'd be great. I've been an independent
- 3:28journalist covering Elon and Space Flight and tech for the
- 3:30last seven years. I'm going to continue for the
- 3:33next 10 and all I ask from you is one second of your time.
- 3:37I'm extremely grateful for you to be here.
- 3:39Thank you for joining this community.
- 3:41Now let's move on while X deals with its revenue crisis.
- 3:47Back in the day, another Musk venture just landed in
- 3:51regulatory crosshairs. The European Union announced a
- 3:54formal investigation into Grok, Musk's AI chatbot, through XAI
- 3:59over concerns of deep fate pornography.
- 4:02This isn't a sternly worded letter or a tweet from some EU
- 4:06commissioner. It's a formal probe under EU
- 4:10digital services regulations, and it carries real teeth.
- 4:15The issue is that Grok has been notably less restricted than
- 4:18competitors like ChatGPT or Claude Must position this as a
- 4:22feature, not a bug. He's been critical of what he
- 4:25calls overly censored AI, arguing that other companies are
- 4:28too cautious, too politically correct.
- 4:31Grok was supposed to be the edgy alternative.
- 4:33The problem is that edgy and generate sexualized deepfakes
- 4:37are different, and the EU isn't interested in debating
- 4:41philosophical approaches to AI freedom.
- 4:43They passed the AI Act, they've been the most aggressive
- 4:46regulator on the planet when it comes to tech, and now they're
- 4:49coming for Grok. This matters beyond just the
- 4:52regulatory find that came. The EU is a massive market.
- 4:57If Grok gets restricted or banned in Europe, that's a
- 5:00significant chunk of potential users gone, and it creates a
- 5:03template for other regulators around the world.
- 5:06The UK might actually follow Australia, So making noise about
- 5:11AI regulation, the US, probably not going to happen there, But
- 5:14once one major jurisdiction acts, others tend to pile on.
- 5:18So this isn't just a European thing.
- 5:21This is about whether Musk's approach to AI, which is
- 5:24basically move fast and let's figure this out eventually, can
- 5:28survive contact with actual governments.
- 5:31And what strikes me is the Pattern X is struggling because
- 5:35Elon prioritized his vision of free speech over advertiser
- 5:39comfort. He didn't think of the business
- 5:41model, he just did what he wanted to do.
- 5:43Grok is in trouble because Musk prioritized his vision of
- 5:46uncensored AI over regulatory expectations.
- 5:50There's a consistency to it. He genuinely believes these
- 5:53institutions, advertisers, regulators are all wrong.
- 5:56And he's right. Maybe he is, but being right and
- 6:00being financially viable aren't always the same thing.
- 6:03Now, let's kind of move into something more positive here
- 6:07because this week also brought news that Warren Buffett's
- 6:10company willpower test the semi trucks.
- 6:13Warren Buffett, the guy who famously avoids tech stocks, the
- 6:16guy who said he doesn't invest in things he doesn't understand.
- 6:19The guy who's been skeptical of Tesla, specifically that Warren
- 6:24Buffett's operation is now partnering with Elon Musk.
- 6:27How? The deal involves Berkshire
- 6:29Hathaway's energy subsidiary providing charging of structure
- 6:33for Tesla Semi deployments. This is significant for a few
- 6:36reasons. First, it suggests that Tesla
- 6:39Semi is finally moving towards serious commercial scale.
- 6:42The truck has been in development limbo for years,
- 6:44with production starts and stops questions about battery range.
- 6:48Skepticism from the trucking industry getting a Buffett
- 6:51company involved signals that serious old school money
- 6:56investors see a real business model here. 2nd, it's a
- 7:00validation of Tesla from someone who has historically been
- 7:03allergic to the company. Buffett and Musk occupy
- 7:06completely different corners of the business world.
- 7:08Buffett is patient capital, long time horizons, dozens and dozens
- 7:15of years in the making, boring industries.
- 7:18Musk is move fast, blow rockets up, sleep at the factory, do
- 7:23whatever you got to do to make this thing work.
- 7:24The fact that Buffett's team looked at Tesla Semi and said
- 7:28yes we want it tells you something about how the industry
- 7:30views that tech now. And 3rd, this is exactly the
- 7:34kind of institutional partnership Tesla needs as it
- 7:36tries to diversify beyond consumer vehicles.
- 7:39The Tesla Semi targets commercial fleets, logistics
- 7:43companies, enterprises with massive fuel budgets.
- 7:45Those customers aren't swayed by Twitter posts or cyber truck
- 7:49aesthetics. They want proven tech and
- 7:51reliable infrastructure. Having Berkshire Hathaway's
- 7:54energy arm involved checks both of those boxes.
- 7:58So here's where we are with the Musk empire as we close out
- 8:02January 2026. Today, X is hemorrhaging money.
- 8:05Back in the day, even as Musk's personal influence peaked, his
- 8:10AI company faces a formal EU investigation that could reshape
- 8:13how Grok operates in major markets.
- 8:15But Tesla? His oldest company just locked
- 8:18in a partnership with one of the most conservative, credibility
- 8:21focused investors on the planet. The empire is simultaneously
- 8:25expanding and contracting depending on where you look.
- 8:28Question for the rest of this year is whether Musk's political
- 8:31capital can translate to business stability, or whether
- 8:35the financial cracks in EX and regulatory pressure on Grok will
- 8:38eventually matter more than how many times that Elon posts in a
- 8:42day.
