• 0:15
Speaker 1: a flash, Pinocchio disappeared into the marionette theater, and then
• 0:19
Speaker 1: something happened which almost caused a riot. The curtain was
• 0:24
Speaker 1: up and the performance had started. Harlequin and Punchinella were
• 0:29
Speaker 1: reciting on the stage, and as usual, they were threatening

Speaker 1: each other with sticks and blows. The theater was full
• 0:35
Speaker 1: of people, enjoying the spectacle and laughing till they cried
• 0:39
Speaker 1: at the antics of the two marionettes. The play continued
• 0:43
Speaker 1: for a few minutes, and suddenly, without any warning, Harlequin

Speaker 1: stopped talking. Turning toward the audience, he pointed to the
• 0:51
Speaker 1: rear of the orchestra, yelling wildly. At the same time, Look, look,

Speaker 1: it is Pinocchio, screamed Pulchinella, it is it is, shrieked
• 1:06
Speaker 1: Signora Rosaura, peeking from the side of the stage. It

Speaker 1: is Pinocchio, It is Pinocchio, yelled all the marionettes pouring

• 1:28
Speaker 1: a loving invitation, Pinocchio, with one leap from the back
• 1:32
Speaker 1: of the orchestra, found himself in the front rows. With
• 1:35
Speaker 1: another leap, he was on the orchestra leader's head. With
• 1:38
Speaker 1: a third he landed on the stage. It is impossible
• 1:41
Speaker 1: to describe the shrieks of joy, the warm embraces, the knox,
• 1:46
Speaker 1: and the friendly greetings with which that strange company of
• 1:49
Speaker 1: dramatic actors and actresses received Pinocchio. It was a heartrending spectacle.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: But the audience, seeing that the play had stopped, became
• 1:59
Speaker 1: angry and began to yell the play, the play, we
• 2:03
Speaker 1: want the play. The yelling was of no use, for
• 2:07
Speaker 1: the marionettes, instead of going on with their act, made
• 2:10
Speaker 1: twice as much racket as before, and lifting up Pinocchio
• 2:13
Speaker 1: on their shoulders, carried him around the stage in triumph.
• 2:17
Speaker 1: At that very moment, the director came out of his room.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: He had such a fearful appearance that one look at
• 2:26
Speaker 1: him would fill you with horror. His beard was black
• 2:29
Speaker 1: as pitch, and so long that it reached from his
• 2:32
Speaker 1: chin down to his feet. His mouth was as wide
• 2:36
Speaker 1: as an oven, his teeth like yellow fangs, and his
• 2:39
Speaker 1: eyes to glowing red coals. In his huge, hairy hands,
• 2:44
Speaker 1: along whip made of green snakes, and black cat's tails
• 2:47
Speaker 1: twisted together, switched through the air in a dangerous way.
• 2:52
Speaker 1: At the unexpected apparition, no one even dared breathe. One
• 2:56
Speaker 1: could almost hear a fly go by. Those poor men,
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Marionette's one, and all trembled like leaves in a storm.
• 3:05
Speaker 1: Why have you brought such excitement into my theater? The
• 3:09
Speaker 1: huge fellow asked Pinocchio, with the voice of an ogre
• 3:12
Speaker 1: suffering from a gold Believe me, your honor, the fault
• 3:16
Speaker 1: was not mine enough. Be quiet, I'll take care of
• 3:21
Speaker 1: you later. As soon as the play was over, the
• 3:26
Speaker 1: director went to the kitchen, where a fine, big lamb
• 3:29
Speaker 1: was slowly turning on the spit. More wood was needed
• 3:33
Speaker 1: to finish cooking it. He called Harlequin and Pulchinella and
• 3:37
Speaker 1: said to them, bring that Marionette to me. He looks
• 3:41
Speaker 1: as if he were made of well seasoned wood. He'd
• 3:44
Speaker 1: make a fine fire for this spit. Harlequin and Pulchinella
• 3:50
Speaker 1: hesitated a bit, then, frightened by a look from their master,
• 3:54
Speaker 1: they left the kitchen to obey him. A few minutes
• 3:57
Speaker 1: later they returned, carrying poor Pinocchio, who was wriggling and
• 4:01
Speaker 1: squirming like an eel and crying pitifully. Father, save me.
• 4:04
  Speaker 1: I don't want to die. I don't want to die.
