- 1:17Speaker 3: actual conference going on. He's the current revenue secretary for
- 1:20Speaker 3: the great state of West Virginia. He's a candidate for
- 1:22Speaker 3: West Virginia Treasurer. Larry Pack How are you, sir?
- 1:24Speaker 4: Good morning, Oh, good morning, how are you.
- 1:28Speaker 5: Big doings down here today, sir?
- 1:31Speaker 4: All right, great now, No, it's good. Good to be
- 1:33Speaker 4: at the Green Broo. A lot of a lot of
- 1:35Speaker 4: excitement at the business summit this year, without a doubt
- 1:40Speaker 4: my practice, the chambers talking about they have almost doubled
- 1:44Speaker 4: the number of members of the last few years. It
- 1:47Speaker 4: really speaks to the West Rginia economy, speaks of the
- 1:50Speaker 4: success of governor justice programs and the legislature programs over
- 1:54Speaker 4: the last number of years. So a lot of a
- 1:57Speaker 4: lot of excitement. There's gonna be some really, I think
- 2:00Speaker 4: the outstanding news Governor will announce today as far as
- 2:04Speaker 4: new jobs coming to West Virginia. So it's gonna be
- 2:06Speaker 4: a big day for West Virginia. And it's also beautiful,
- 2:09Speaker 4: so it's it's sunny and hot and and just beautiful.
- 2:13Speaker 4: And bring back down this morning.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Yeah, everybody needs to be well hydrated in and out
- 2:16Speaker 3: of conferences today. Let's start big picture though, and then
- 2:19Speaker 3: we'll come back to some of the politics of the day.
- 2:21Speaker 3: You're a committee member, you're part of the state apparatus
- 2:25Speaker 3: of the GOP. We've all seen the last historically, because
- 2:28Speaker 3: I'm a history nerd, the last twenty twenty five years,
- 2:31Speaker 3: the GOP flipping West Virginia from cobalt blue to deep
- 2:34Speaker 3: red is really kind of unprecedented in American history if
- 2:37Speaker 3: you really think about it, look past this election for
- 2:40Speaker 3: just a minute, because you're with those leaders who are
- 2:41Speaker 3: going to be leading this party for the next I
- 2:43Speaker 3: have ten to fifteen years. What do you think is
- 2:46Speaker 3: the key for those future years to continue the electoral
- 2:50Speaker 3: success that the GOP has had the last twenty twenty
- 2:52Speaker 3: five years, turning West Virginia into a Republican's stalwart state.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it has been phenomenal. I've been involved in Westinia
- 2:59Speaker 4: politics since since I was since I was a kid,
- 3:02Speaker 4: so a long long time. And when I started, it
- 3:06Speaker 4: was the Republicans that were in the thirty percent range. Uh,
- 3:10Speaker 4: and now it's totally accepting it's on the Democrat side.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I really think the difference is that, you know, when
- 3:16Speaker 4: I was a kid, the Republican was really was known
- 3:20Speaker 4: as the as the country club party.
- 3:23Speaker 6: Uh.
- 3:23Speaker 4: And that's not who we are. Mat fact, I make
- 3:25Speaker 4: it make a good argument that's where the Democrats are.
- 3:27Speaker 4: So we're we're now the party of the working man.
- 3:29Speaker 4: We're the Party of common sense. I think as long
- 3:32Speaker 4: as we keep regular West Virginia values, common sense values,
- 3:37Speaker 4: we continue to encourage freedom, to encourage people to be
- 3:42Speaker 4: able to live their lives where they want to live
- 3:44Speaker 4: their lives, I think we'll stay and we'll stay in
- 3:48Speaker 4: fire in West Virginia and the Republicans will continue to prevail.
- 3:52Speaker 4: But if we lose our way and we uh uh,
- 3:55Speaker 4: let's swamp take over, or we think it's all about
- 3:58Speaker 4: us and not about as governor justin say Tooby and Edith,
- 4:04Speaker 4: then we'll find ourselves in the same shape that the
- 4:06Speaker 4: Democrats certainly or find ourselves there today.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Yeah, Larry Pack joining us on five to eighty Live,
- 4:14Speaker 3: you touched on it. It's inarguable one of the big
- 4:16Speaker 3: demographic groups of electors that the Donald Trump era has
- 4:20Speaker 3: changed is what they used to call the blue dog Democrats.
- 4:23Speaker 3: That was the core base of West Virginia voters. That's
- 4:25Speaker 3: what I grew up with. When I registered to vote
- 4:28Speaker 3: for the first time, you know, they didn't even ask
- 4:30Speaker 3: me which party you're going to vote for? Right that
- 4:32Speaker 3: back in nineteen ninety eight, that was my first election.
- 4:35Speaker 3: That's how fast these things have changed. Yeah, but just
- 4:38Speaker 3: talk to that for just a second, because here's the thing.
- 4:42Speaker 3: We don't have the same working force and those blue
- 4:45Speaker 3: collar workers you're talking about. We now have more service
- 4:47Speaker 3: based workers. West Virginia has a lot of healthcare based workers,
- 4:51Speaker 3: a lot of state workers, teachers and people working for
- 4:53Speaker 3: the states and various things. That's the new economy, along
- 4:56Speaker 3: with tourism and things. And that goes directly what you're saying.
- 4:59Speaker 3: The electorate of West Virginia has changed. That's why the
- 5:02Speaker 3: voting has changed.
- 5:04Speaker 4: I think the electorate has changed, but we're still the same. Uh,
- 5:08Speaker 4: we still have the same value as I think. Really
- 5:10Speaker 4: the values that have changed is not so much the
- 5:12Speaker 4: values of West Virginia's it's it's the values of the
- 5:14Speaker 4: Democrat Party Uh. When you know, when the Democrat Party
- 5:18Speaker 4: becomes more involved and telling us how to live, how
- 5:21Speaker 4: to think, what to do. Uh, when they lose when
- 5:24Speaker 4: they started losing their common sense, That's when they lost
- 5:26Speaker 4: to West Virginia. When they when Democrat parties said no
- 5:30Speaker 4: to foster fuels. You know, they started first there on
- 5:32Speaker 4: alumna cold and natural gas and oil. When they started,
- 5:37Speaker 4: you know, basically talking about open borders and allowing the
- 5:39Speaker 4: borders to be open, they started losing people. Uh when
- 5:43Speaker 4: when basically they they proper you know, abortion, not not
- 5:47Speaker 4: just on demand, but up until the day of birth.
- 5:50Speaker 7: Uh.
- 5:50Speaker 4: So I think it's it's the out of touch national
- 5:53Speaker 4: Democrat Party that changed that moved West Virginia and the
- 5:56Speaker 4: Republican Party much more, really more so than what the
- 5:59Speaker 4: republic they can do.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Yeah, let's talk to local and not the national.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Though you're running for treasury. This is an important job.
- 6:08Speaker 3: This is a really make or break job for a state.
- 6:10Speaker 3: The financial health of the state. We see the buzzwords taxes,
- 6:13Speaker 3: tax cuts, revenue, all that goes through the Treasurer's office.
- 6:17Speaker 3: But how would you define that role when you're talking
- 6:19Speaker 3: to just the general public, Because you're technically under the headline,
- 6:23Speaker 3: you're in charge of all that money, but all that
- 6:25Speaker 3: money's got to go through the legislature. The governor's agenda
- 6:28Speaker 3: has a lot of say on that money, all those
- 6:30Speaker 3: organizations and all the parts of government. You know, there's
- 6:32Speaker 3: a lot of mouths defeat and ultimately you're also responsible
- 6:36Speaker 3: to the people of West Virginia for how that money
- 6:38Speaker 3: is getting spent. How do you define that role? Because
- 6:40Speaker 3: it sounds simple, but that's a very complicated, very intricate
- 6:43Speaker 3: part of our West Virginia state government that you're seeking
- 6:45Speaker 3: office for.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think we're very blessed that our
- 6:48Speaker 4: fore fathers put when they design this, you know, the
- 6:52Speaker 4: governance for state with Virginia, they put a lot of
- 6:54Speaker 4: checks and balances in it, so we don't have kings.
- 6:58Speaker 4: So really get anything done, you have to work with
- 7:00Speaker 4: a lot of different a lot of different elected offices
- 7:02Speaker 4: and so forth. But when I talk to people, what
- 7:06Speaker 4: I what I talk to people is in simple terms,
- 7:08Speaker 4: I say that anywhere that the State of West Virginia
- 7:12Speaker 4: takes your money with speez or taxes, spend your money,
- 7:17Speaker 4: or invest your money, that's the place that the Treasure
- 7:20Speaker 4: Office will weigh in. And in addition to that, how
- 7:24Speaker 4: we borrow money, uh, the treasure would weigh in. So
- 7:28Speaker 4: so it's basically the chief financial officer of the state.
- 7:31Speaker 4: So anywhere we're spending money, borrowing money, taking your money,
- 7:35Speaker 4: the treasure needs to weigh in. Sometimes we have more
- 7:37Speaker 4: authority than others that we always have an opinion, and
- 7:40Speaker 4: we have the ability to influence. We believe the basic
- 7:45Speaker 4: the affairs of the day. I think the Treasure's office
- 7:48Speaker 4: takes a more longer term view states finances, uh, the legislature,
- 7:53Speaker 4: and I think the governor's more everyday view. So so
- 7:57Speaker 4: we have the ability to look trends and look at
- 8:00Speaker 4: where the state of West Virginia has been going. And
- 8:03Speaker 4: I would profer that if if, if the previous treasures
- 8:06Speaker 4: have done this again there's Treasure morris On a really
- 8:08Speaker 4: wonderful job, but treasers over the years have done that,
- 8:10Speaker 4: then maybe we wouldn't have found ourselves in some of
- 8:13Speaker 4: the some of the predicaments that that we are. So
- 8:15Speaker 4: we expect to have very strong office. We expect the
- 8:18Speaker 4: weigh in on basically all financial things going on with
- 8:21Speaker 4: the state. But we also have you know, we have
- 8:23Speaker 4: things that we that we run. We run the savings programs.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Right the five twenty nine, the jump starts West Virginia
- 8:29Speaker 4: eveles unclaimed property things we do. We're the bank for
- 8:34Speaker 4: the State of West Virginia, so so we do things
- 8:36Speaker 4: at a bank that a bank would do. So so
- 8:39Speaker 4: we got a lot of stuff going on Hope Scholarship.
- 8:41Speaker 4: You know, we're the administrative administrator of that. Uh you know,
- 8:45Speaker 4: as we all know that the program is really gonna
- 8:48Speaker 4: going to explode in fiscal twenty six, so we get
- 8:51Speaker 4: it ready for that. So there's a lot of different
- 8:52Speaker 4: things we're doing. We have a small group. It's a
- 8:55Speaker 4: very efficient office as a treasure treasure morries put together.
- 8:59Speaker 4: He is given me complete access to the Treasure's office,
- 9:02Speaker 4: so they're prepping me. I'm meeting with them at least
- 9:05Speaker 4: once a week getting ready for it. But in the meantime,
- 9:09Speaker 4: Governor Justice said is running the finish line and we've
- 9:11Speaker 4: got a lot of work to do and not learned
- 9:13Speaker 4: the Governor's office but also Secretary Revenue. So it's a
- 9:15Speaker 4: busy time, but it's a good time for West Virginia
- 9:18Speaker 4: because we have a lot of positive movement in state
- 9:21Speaker 4: of West Virginia.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Larry Pack, current Revenue Secretary seeking to be the treasure
- 9:26Speaker 3: of West Virginia, joining us on five to eighty Live.
- 9:28Speaker 5: You just touched on it.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Look, campaign, you have to do certain things to get elected,
- 9:32Speaker 3: but once you're elected, a lot of governing is not
- 9:35Speaker 3: just what you say in the campaign. It's those relationships
- 9:37Speaker 3: you just touched on it. Talk about the relationships of
- 9:40Speaker 3: dealing with the governor, dealing with the legislature, dealing with
- 9:43Speaker 3: the other departments of government. Because people hear something and
- 9:45Speaker 3: you've seen it on social media. You're active on social media,
- 9:47Speaker 3: you've probably heard it talking to people. As you've campaigned
- 9:50Speaker 3: around the state, people say, well, we got this surplus,
- 9:52Speaker 3: why aren't we spending it on X, Y and z.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Because there's always some pressing matter for something. Now, in
- 9:57Speaker 3: our own personal finances, we understand if you spend and
- 10:00Speaker 3: all your savings on whatever, you quickly run out of savings.
- 10:03Speaker 4: That's right.
- 10:04Speaker 5: The state has the same problem. But at the same time.
- 10:07Speaker 3: There's very serious issues with the state. That's part of
- 10:10Speaker 3: your role. You have to talk to the governor, you
- 10:12Speaker 3: have to advocate. Sometimes you have to push back, what's
- 10:15Speaker 3: your standard on Okay, this is actually an emergency. We
- 10:18Speaker 3: need to dip into that surplus or the rainy day
- 10:20Speaker 3: fund or whatever the case may be. What's your standard
- 10:23Speaker 3: looking at it?
- 10:24Speaker 5: Because the have and that's the question people have.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Well, I think I think so much of a perspective,
- 10:32Speaker 4: So where where do you start? Where do you start?
- 10:34Speaker 4: As far as we have, you know, the certain amount
- 10:37Speaker 4: of money, and what do you do with So the
- 10:38Speaker 4: money comes into state government, we got three things we
- 10:40Speaker 4: can do with it. We can spend it, we can
- 10:43Speaker 4: save it, or we can give it back and so
- 10:46Speaker 4: so so I think what the governor has taught me
- 10:50Speaker 4: is to first look at any issue from the perspective
- 10:53Speaker 4: of again I'll go back to Toby Media. In other words,
- 10:55Speaker 4: our neighbors, the folks you grew up with, So what
- 10:59Speaker 4: is the best decision for them? Always try to look
- 11:02Speaker 4: at the each each each decision to each each area
- 11:05Speaker 4: for that because again, governing, it's its priorities and so
- 11:08Speaker 4: so in one hand, from a revenue standpoint, we live
- 11:12Speaker 4: in a competitive world or a competitive country. So if
- 11:15Speaker 4: we're out an outlier on any tax policy, uh, on
- 11:19Speaker 4: really any policy, uh, other people are competing against us,
- 11:22Speaker 4: and they're pointing that out. So so we got to
- 11:24Speaker 4: work really really hard to be competitive with other states.
- 11:28Speaker 4: But then when it comes to the money that we have,
- 11:30Speaker 4: we have to really make sure that we're spending judiciously.
- 11:34Speaker 8: UH.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Again, we all spend our money, our own money in
- 11:37Speaker 4: much different ways, and we spend other people's money. That's
- 11:40Speaker 4: just just human natures. So so we have to make
- 11:42Speaker 4: sure that we're spending it like it's like it's our money.
- 11:45Speaker 4: We're making the right decisions. So what I like to
- 11:48Speaker 4: look at is is when we see a need, a
- 11:51Speaker 4: need we have to address. So in this last week,
- 11:53Speaker 4: the governors has has addressed additional money for UH for
- 11:58Speaker 4: waiver programs. You know, people can stay in their homes
- 12:01Speaker 4: for child care. A lot of times is what happens
- 12:05Speaker 4: in government. There's a certain perspective or a certain way
- 12:08Speaker 4: that people think of it, said, well, that's just additional
- 12:10Speaker 4: government spending. I think my way is that what is
- 12:12Speaker 4: it that we're doing that we don't necessarily.
- 12:15Speaker 9: Have to do?
- 12:16Speaker 4: And so I spent a lot of time over the
- 12:18Speaker 4: last two years in the Governor's Office Secuary Revenue of
- 12:22Speaker 4: identifying things that I don't think government has to do.
- 12:26Speaker 4: The governments Daniels of Indiana back in the day used
- 12:28Speaker 4: to say, hey, if I can find it in the
- 12:29Speaker 4: phone book, the state of Indiana shouldn't be doing it.
- 12:32Speaker 4: And so we're trying to identify things like that because
- 12:35Speaker 4: we will have additional needs. There'll be things come up
- 12:37Speaker 4: that we don't we don't think about. You know, for example,
- 12:42Speaker 4: government justice has been a big unless. They sure have
- 12:44Speaker 4: been a big backer of money for food banks. Right, Well,
- 12:47Speaker 4: that's something ten years ago, twenty years ago wasn't a
- 12:50Speaker 4: big need. It is now in need. And there's a
- 12:53Speaker 4: thousand reasons why. But where Governor Justice comes down on it,
- 12:57Speaker 4: and I totally agree with him, that does it almost
- 12:59Speaker 4: doesn't matter why people we're hungry. We've got to try,
- 13:01Speaker 4: we've got to see so so so so Again, I
- 13:04Speaker 4: think I thank you when when you have to add
- 13:06Speaker 4: government programs, you need to look and see what other
- 13:09Speaker 4: programs you can do more efficiently, uh or programs maybe
- 13:12Speaker 4: we don't need to do that the private sector can do.
- 13:14Speaker 4: So that's kind of my perspective way I'm looking at it,
- 13:18Speaker 4: and I think there's just a lot of stuff to
- 13:19Speaker 4: uncover and to think about. And as treasure I may
- 13:23Speaker 4: not be the decider on these issues, but I can
- 13:26Speaker 4: be the person that brings them up and asks the
- 13:29Speaker 4: deciders to consider that have you thought about this? Have
- 13:31Speaker 4: you thought about that? So I'm excited about that, and
- 13:34Speaker 4: I'm very excited about the UH the next next and
- 13:38Speaker 4: in the next four months, but the next four years,
- 13:40Speaker 4: I think it's some one of you a really great time.
- 13:42Speaker 4: We're going some governor justice and some common sense to
- 13:45Speaker 4: to d c uh Patrick Morrison is going to come
- 13:48Speaker 4: in and bring his conservative principles and so we're going
- 13:51Speaker 4: to be you know, to me, it's going to be
- 13:52Speaker 4: Jim Justice too. We're going to continue to move West
- 13:54Speaker 4: Virginia forward. We have new legislators and new ideas coming,
- 13:59Speaker 4: and I think we're will make a lot of progress
- 14:01Speaker 4: in the last in the next four years, and I'm
- 14:03Speaker 4: hoping that we make as much as you did in
- 14:04Speaker 4: the last four years.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Larry pat join us for I let you go onond reason.
- 14:08Speaker 3: I follow you on social media on Twitter. You don't
- 14:10Speaker 3: do all politics. You do something I do. I like
- 14:12Speaker 3: to do food. You put all these great nature scenes
- 14:14Speaker 3: because you're an avid hiker. Now I've got high standards.
- 14:17Speaker 3: I'm from Somersville, Summersville Lake I went to church and
- 14:19Speaker 3: High Cafette County. The New River Gorge is basically home
- 14:23Speaker 3: to me. Those two are hard to tip. But give
- 14:25Speaker 3: me one or two of your favorite hikes in the county.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Not today because it's really really high, but in the
- 14:29Speaker 3: state of West Virginia. Give us one or two of
- 14:31Speaker 3: your favorite hikes.
- 14:32Speaker 4: My favorite and I love hiking and love getting outdoors,
- 14:35Speaker 4: and so there's so many hikes. But my favorite hike
- 14:40Speaker 4: is about a five mile hike that's in the big
- 14:43Speaker 4: draft of wilderness, so basically Anthony's Creek in Greenborough County,
- 14:47Speaker 4: and it's a it's a five mile loop pike that
- 14:50Speaker 4: you go across the bridge there on Anthony's Creek at
- 14:54Speaker 4: the at the campground, and it's you know, it goes around,
- 14:58Speaker 4: it goes along It's creek for a while, and there's
- 15:01Speaker 4: a big draft for a while, and then you go
- 15:03Speaker 4: up on the hill and you get some beautiful views
- 15:05Speaker 4: and you come back around. I think that's just absolutely phenomenal.
- 15:09Speaker 4: But I love hoot loop pikes. But we you know,
- 15:12Speaker 4: I like all around West Virginia. There are so many
- 15:14Speaker 4: beautiful spots. One thing my wife and I have started
- 15:17Speaker 4: this year is we've taken advantage of the West Virginia
- 15:20Speaker 4: Tourism Waterfall Trail and so there's about forty two forty
- 15:23Speaker 4: three trail the waterfalls around the state of Virginia. This
- 15:26Speaker 4: is not the best time to go, by the way,
- 15:28Speaker 4: and we said about half of them and we're going
- 15:30Speaker 4: to finish it before the end of the year. And
- 15:32Speaker 4: the great thing about the waterfall trails not just the scenery.
- 15:35Speaker 4: It's not just the waterfalls, but it takes you to
- 15:38Speaker 4: places in West Virginia that even a lifelong West Virginia
- 15:41Speaker 4: have not been before. So we've absolutely enjoyed that. I

- 16:04Speaker 4: never walked down those trails and walked through those waterfalls.
- 16:06Speaker 4: And we did that early in the summer, and that
- 16:08Speaker 4: was a blessing for sure.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I got to write a piece for that. For

- 16:39Speaker 3: That's why we wanted to talk a little bigger picture.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Dale Cooper sitting with me, Dale, I find it amazing
- 16:45Speaker 3: with things like this. I look, I grew up in
- 16:48Speaker 3: West Virginia. I remember when it was exactly the opposite
- 16:50Speaker 3: of what it is right now.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Larry's a little older than me. We won't say how old.
- 16:54Speaker 3: He's a little bit older than me, and you're just
- 16:56Speaker 3: you and me. Are about the same age. If you
- 16:59Speaker 3: told nineteen nine Andy that, you know, it would be
- 17:02Speaker 3: the absolute opposite. I would have thought you were nuch
- 17:04Speaker 3: to that first election. That's the Clinton midterm, that's the
- 17:06Speaker 3: impeachment election. That's the first election I registered to vote.
- 17:08Speaker 3: You want to talk about an important election.
- 17:10Speaker 6: Right right right before that? Yeah, the same thing. My
- 17:13Speaker 6: first election was one right before that, and same thing
- 17:15Speaker 6: it was. You know, the state was basically in default mode,
- 17:18Speaker 6: which it is again for the most part. It's just
- 17:20Speaker 6: it's it's it's completely changed. It's one hundred and eighty
- 17:22Speaker 6: degree turn.
- 17:23Speaker 5: It's amazing. So here's what we're going to do.

- 21:03Speaker 3: Jeep Ram dot com. Let's bring in Dale Cooper. I
- 21:09Speaker 3: amazed it by this because yesterday you had a delegate
- 21:11Speaker 3: Push Can and of course he's also the head of
- 21:13Speaker 3: the Democratic Party. We were just talking about it, the
- 21:15Speaker 3: Democratic Party. If you go back and look at like
- 21:17Speaker 3: ninety six, ninety eight, the delegate count, the statewide count,
- 21:21Speaker 3: whatever you want to do, it's completely flipped Democrat to
- 21:24Speaker 3: Republican to what it is now. And there was a
- 21:27Speaker 3: lot of strong reaction to your conversation yesterday, wasn't there deal.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Yeah, there was quite a bit of it. Yeah, it
- 21:32Speaker 6: was back when I was growing up, and first it
- 21:35Speaker 6: came to voting. Of course, it was basically a uniparty.
- 21:37Speaker 11: You know.
- 21:37Speaker 6: I mean you had slightly more conservative Democrats and you
- 21:41Speaker 6: had conservative Democrats. I mean, that was basically the way
- 21:45Speaker 6: that it worked here when the Democratic Party was in
- 21:48Speaker 6: charge in West Virginia. But there has been and I
- 21:50Speaker 6: was out of state for a long period of time.
- 21:51Speaker 6: I was out of state for about fourteen years before
- 21:53Speaker 6: coming back here in twenty ten. So the switch to me,
- 21:58Speaker 6: although I came back to visit my face family, was
- 22:00Speaker 6: pretty pretty profound. When I got back here in twenty ten,
- 22:03Speaker 6: it was a different state that I came back to.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been interesting because I left in two thousand
- 22:08Speaker 3: because I joined the military. I left for enlistment out
- 22:11Speaker 3: of Beckley on the one August two thousand, so it's
- 22:13Speaker 3: really easy to remember that date.
- 22:15Speaker 5: Of course, that was pre nine to eleven.
- 22:17Speaker 3: A whole lot of things changed after nine to eleven,
- 22:19Speaker 3: and that job changed very, very rapidly.
- 22:21Speaker 5: But it's been amazing watching the change in it.
- 22:23Speaker 3: But just take a look Tony the Taylor text line
- 22:26Speaker 3: three or four nine, three five, five zero zero eight.
- 22:28Speaker 3: If you want to respond to anything from yesterday, if
- 22:30Speaker 3: you want to respond to Larry Pack and the things
- 22:32Speaker 3: he said, big doings today, By the way, Hobby's going
- 22:34Speaker 3: to be broadcasting live from that very conference. What's going
- 22:37Speaker 3: on on the text line, Coop, Well, we've.
- 22:39Speaker 6: Gotten a couple of things, and it seems like that
- 22:41Speaker 6: our text line has kind of turned into a lot
- 22:43Speaker 6: of the more liberal side of folks tend to use
- 22:46Speaker 6: the text line a lot. You're welcome to call in
- 22:47Speaker 6: if you'd like to. Two three zero four three four
- 22:49Speaker 6: five fifty eight fifty eight three four five fifty eight fifty.
- 22:51Speaker 6: This is a friendly place for everyone. We just want
- 22:52Speaker 6: to hear what you have to say. We're not going
- 22:54Speaker 6: to not going to hold your feet to the fire
- 22:56Speaker 6: on it. We just want to want to hear what
- 22:57Speaker 6: your opinions is. But this one has to do. This
- 22:59Speaker 6: is from the seven six zero nine hundred Justice and Morrissey.
- 23:03Speaker 6: Justice is likely in debt to the Saudi's and doesn't
- 23:05Speaker 6: pay his workers insurance. Morrissey is a pain pill lobbyist
- 23:08Speaker 6: and refuses to investigate Justice's insurance fraud. We don't need
- 23:11Speaker 6: criminals as our senator and governor. But that's what we'll
- 23:13Speaker 6: get because it's West Virginia's. Because West Virginia's aren't to
- 23:17Speaker 6: the brightest. And now that's it's uncalled for.
- 23:20Speaker 3: It's ridiculous and it's silly and it's childish. Let's just
- 23:22Speaker 3: take a second and talk about the Jim Justice story,
- 23:24Speaker 3: because here's what happened. And I'm guilty of this too,
- 23:27Speaker 3: because I do media, So I'm guilty of two. When
- 23:29Speaker 3: we cover a story day after day after day, and
- 23:31Speaker 3: something like the Greenbrier issue and Jim Justice's finances and
- 23:34Speaker 3: Governor Justice's business dealings, when you cover it day after
- 23:38Speaker 3: day after day, coop, what happens is we start tunneling
- 23:41Speaker 3: visioning on it. You just tunnel in on it, and
- 23:43Speaker 3: you start getting into the minution. You kind of lose
- 23:45Speaker 3: the big picture things. So let's let's just take a
- 23:46Speaker 3: second here in zoom out for a second. Big businesses
- 23:50Speaker 3: like what the Justice Family Corporation does. They carry heavy deadloads,
- 23:54Speaker 3: it's just part of their business plan. They keep their
- 23:57Speaker 3: actual assets very fluid by using debt to purchase things,
- 24:00Speaker 3: and then you move your assets between your various assets.
- 24:03Speaker 3: The Justice Family Company is something like one hundred different entities.
- 24:06Speaker 3: They're very low key. They don't have a lot of
- 24:07Speaker 3: buildings with their name on them like Donald Trump does,
- 24:10Speaker 3: but they have all these different businesses and one of
- 24:13Speaker 3: your ways. You can't conduct your business. It's not illegal.
- 24:16Speaker 3: A lot of people do it this way. You can
- 24:18Speaker 3: argue about the best way to do business or not,
- 24:20Speaker 3: but this is legal. You carry a very high debt
- 24:22Speaker 3: load and you can move that money around to various things. Now,
- 24:26Speaker 3: the problem with that kind of business model is you
- 24:28Speaker 3: got a number one, have enough capital to.
- 24:30Speaker 5: Cover all that and too. It's kind of like a
- 24:32Speaker 5: bank run.
- 24:32Speaker 3: If we all go to United National Bank or Wells
- 24:34Speaker 3: Fargo or wherever you bank right now, if we all
- 24:37Speaker 3: went there at the same time, No, they don't have
- 24:39Speaker 3: enough money to cover everybody's That's why they pay you
- 24:41Speaker 3: those fees to spread that money around.
- 24:43Speaker 10: Right.
- 24:44Speaker 3: High leverage debt businesses are the same thing. If everybody
- 24:47Speaker 3: called in their debts all at the same time, now
- 24:49Speaker 3: all of a sudden got a problem because you can't
- 24:51Speaker 3: move your actual assets around fast enough to match it.
- 24:54Speaker 3: So adult point number one, No, there's no way that
- 24:58Speaker 3: a story about the sitting governor soon to be US senator,
- 25:00Speaker 3: all due respect to the electoral process. West Virginia's lectured
- 25:03Speaker 3: is what it is a soon to be sitting senator
- 25:06Speaker 3: that news is going to be political, not because of
- 25:09Speaker 3: the way it's covered just because of who it's about. Yes,
- 25:11Speaker 3: that's going to have political charge, and we see that
- 25:13Speaker 3: on the text line, in the phone line and all
- 25:15Speaker 3: the programming here on WCHS. But financially, what's happening and
- 25:19Speaker 3: why this is happening so much now as two reasons.
- 25:21Speaker 3: One is the politics make it much more high profile
- 25:25Speaker 3: because it's on the news all the time, so it
- 25:26Speaker 3: becomes a self feeding thing. And number two is if
- 25:29Speaker 3: you what they're really trying to do with these financial
- 25:32Speaker 3: companies is they're worried about getting paid back and they
- 25:36Speaker 3: know that, like that bank run, if everybody goes to
- 25:38Speaker 3: call those debts at the same time, there's not enough
- 25:41Speaker 3: money to go around for everybody. So some of this
- 25:43Speaker 3: is posturing and planning and strategy because one, they're trying
- 25:46Speaker 3: to get public pressure through the media to get paid,
- 25:49Speaker 3: which is working in some cases as it worked to
- 25:51Speaker 3: settle down the debts for the Green Bars we saw
- 25:53Speaker 3: this week. But number two is if they all get
- 25:56Speaker 3: called in at once, then the justice family of companies,
- 25:58Speaker 3: or at least the particulars involved can and have a
- 26:02Speaker 3: legal right to, They could declare bankruptcy. And if you
- 26:04Speaker 3: go to bankruptcy, then these all places and these entities
- 26:08Speaker 3: would want to get in line because the trustee then
- 26:11Speaker 3: decides who gets paid and how much, and they want
- 26:13Speaker 3: to have prior standing in case it goes to court,
- 26:15Speaker 3: whether in a bankruptcy or in an arbitration, whatever the
- 26:17Speaker 3: case may be. So you have all those things going
- 26:20Speaker 3: into one thing. Plus it's a political story, plus it's
- 26:22Speaker 3: an election year.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Does that make sense, Coop? Did I lay that out
- 26:25Speaker 5: pretty clearly?
- 26:26Speaker 6: I think it does. And there's I know just enough
- 26:30Speaker 6: about high level of finance and things along those lines
- 26:32Speaker 6: to know that there's so much that I don't understand.
- 26:34Speaker 6: That when you don't know something and you backfill your
- 26:37Speaker 6: lack of knowledge with, you know, sort of your disposition,
- 26:40Speaker 6: sometimes you can lead yourself down a hole where all
- 26:42Speaker 6: you're seeing is darkness and conspiracy. I'm not saying that
- 26:44Speaker 6: there's there, everything's above board. I'm just saying there's a
- 26:47Speaker 6: lot I don't know, and it's really easy to fill
- 26:49Speaker 6: that with with the worst possible things that being said
- 26:52Speaker 6: on the flip side of things, the entire conversation about
- 26:55Speaker 6: it being a political witch hunt or something like that.
- 26:57Speaker 6: I have enough experience. I did mortgages free years, and
- 27:00Speaker 6: again not at this high dollar value. But the act
- 27:04Speaker 6: for the original potential bankruptcy, the act of or not
- 27:07Speaker 6: being crusty, but foreclosure, the act of selling off bad
- 27:10Speaker 6: paper to a bad debt servicer is very normal. It's
- 27:13Speaker 6: an extraordinarily normal thing to do for a company that's
- 27:17Speaker 6: holding on to bad paper, paper they haven't mettle to
- 27:19Speaker 6: get payment on that they're struggling with, and to give
- 27:21Speaker 6: that to a service er that specializes in bad debt
- 27:23Speaker 6: is just normal. It happens to people all the time.
- 27:26Speaker 6: It has happened to me before. If you've ever had
- 27:27Speaker 6: your mortgage sold for some reason or another, maybe it
- 27:29Speaker 6: wasn't for anything you did, but oftentimes if you are
- 27:31Speaker 6: just a slow pay, you don't even have to be
- 27:33Speaker 6: laid on something. You could be a slow pay and
- 27:34Speaker 6: they're going to offset that debt because you're no longer
- 27:36Speaker 6: a one prime paper to somebody that services that's something
- 27:39Speaker 6: that's not a one prime paper. That's just something that happens.
- 27:42Speaker 6: Most people don't get six opportunities to rescue the deal though,
- 27:45Speaker 6: before it's sent into some sort of foreclosure. So that's
- 27:48Speaker 6: the part of the things. I think that if you
- 27:51Speaker 6: set the if you're doing honest dealings from the beginning,
- 27:55Speaker 6: and then you come back to explain exactly how you did.
- 27:58Speaker 6: I mean, frankly, the governor should have did that himself
- 27:59Speaker 6: to degree, because that makes a lot of sense. But
- 28:02Speaker 6: when you try to impeach the media right away for
- 28:04Speaker 6: reporting fact based reporting, that's where things start to go
- 28:07Speaker 6: a little bit sideways.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I think if I was advising Governor Justice, and I'm not,
- 28:11Speaker 3: but if he calls me, I'll give him this advice
- 28:13Speaker 3: if he'd like to have it, because he is a
- 28:16Speaker 3: very personable guy in person. He's a nice guy in person.
- 28:19Speaker 3: He's good to people in person. We're talking about his
- 28:21Speaker 3: business dealings here. This isn't a political statement. This is
- 28:24Speaker 3: just how the world works. By denying the press the story.
- 28:29Speaker 3: And you've done media long time, Coop, you can bag
- 28:31Speaker 3: me up on this. And I've done media for about
- 28:32Speaker 3: five six years now. If you don't feed the press anything,
- 28:36Speaker 3: they're going to come looking for stuff. So if you
- 28:39Speaker 3: just stonewall the press, you're actually defeating the point because
- 28:42Speaker 3: you're going to keep the story going by not giving
- 28:43Speaker 3: them anything. The other fair criticism of Governor Justice here
- 28:47Speaker 3: is he had the option when he ran for governor,
- 28:49Speaker 3: and there was a lot of press about this is
- 28:51Speaker 3: do you put your assets in a blind trust? Because
- 28:53Speaker 3: now he could just go to the microphone and go, hey,
- 28:55Speaker 3: kids are running the We've got trustees, the kids are
- 28:57Speaker 3: running the business. I have nothing to do with it,
- 28:59Speaker 3: and that's It's the end of the story. He could
- 29:01Speaker 3: have also done that. He's running as a politician on
- 29:04Speaker 3: his business acumen, and now is his record on governor.
- 29:06Speaker 3: So it's fair game because of the situation he put
- 29:09Speaker 3: himself in. Now, Now, conspiracy theory is like, well, he
- 29:12Speaker 3: was clearly bought off by the Saudis just because he
- 29:14Speaker 3: does business with the Saudis on the golf course. And
- 29:16Speaker 3: I've got lots of issues with the Saudis on their
- 29:18Speaker 3: human rights stuff and a lot of other things. I
- 29:20Speaker 3: don't like the sports washing that the live golf tournament does.
- 29:23Speaker 3: But no, you can't make that jump and say something
- 29:26Speaker 3: like that without some actual proof of it. This is
- 29:28Speaker 3: a large group of companies that they can move money around,
- 29:31Speaker 3: and they can't move it today. They have to call banks,
- 29:33Speaker 3: they got to do collateral, they gotta do things. Doesn't
- 29:35Speaker 3: mean it's a conspiracy. But again, the fair criticism, not
- 29:39Speaker 3: the conspiracy is. Governor Justice talks about this, lays out
- 29:42Speaker 3: his reasoning, says, yes, we're putting together deal. It's going
- 29:45Speaker 3: to take five to ten days. Put the deal together.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Now you've cooled the story off. And by just stonewalling
- 29:49Speaker 3: the press because it plays really well in social medium,
- 29:52Speaker 3: plays really well to your constituents that are politically inligned
- 29:55Speaker 3: with you, you're actually keeping the story going. So my
- 29:58Speaker 3: advice to the governor would be be little more forthcoming.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Give the You don't have to tell the media everything
- 30:03Speaker 3: because it is an adversarial media, as it should be.
- 30:05Speaker 3: There should be a give and take there. There should
- 30:07Speaker 3: be an adversarial relationship. But you got to give them
- 30:09Speaker 3: something or they're going to go looking for more. Give
- 30:12Speaker 3: them something. Be a little more upfront. This story would
- 30:14Speaker 3: cool off. It's not and here we be coop.
- 30:17Speaker 6: I think that that's that's right on the uh. Sometimes
- 30:20Speaker 6: by not giving what should be known you, you you
- 30:24Speaker 6: risk unearthing things that maybe you didn't want to have known,
- 30:27Speaker 6: and that can lead to some problems. It reminds me
- 30:29Speaker 6: you remember that old movie Wag the Dog. It had hawk, Yeah, exactly,
- 30:34Speaker 6: dusn't Hoffin and Robert De Niro had had a great
- 30:36Speaker 6: cast in it. And if I remember correctly, was Hoffman
- 30:40Speaker 6: the advisor or the man it's been so long as
- 30:42Speaker 6: I've seen.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Him spend doctor, Yeah whatever they called you, and he
- 30:45Speaker 3: is not enjoy the end of that movie, by the way,
- 30:47Speaker 3: yet not.
- 30:48Speaker 5: Too much away exactly right.
- 30:49Speaker 6: But he gave advice to the president at one time
- 30:51Speaker 6: when the president was associated with sort of a shady figure.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Uh.
- 30:55Speaker 6: The president and his other advisers were like, you know,
- 30:57Speaker 6: we have to distance ourselves as much as possible. We
- 30:58Speaker 6: have to deny that we know everything about him. And
- 31:01Speaker 6: Hoffman's advisor said, you know what what you need to
- 31:03Speaker 6: do is actually embrace him. Say I'm as close as
- 31:05Speaker 6: I could possibly be to him. What do you mean
- 31:06Speaker 6: he did something? I would be personally offended if I
- 31:09Speaker 6: found out that he was into some shading dealings or whatever. Now,
- 31:12Speaker 6: in the real world that doesn't translate one to one,
- 31:14Speaker 6: but there is I think a message in that, and
- 31:16Speaker 6: that do not deny, deny when there's when there's something there,
- 31:20Speaker 6: Why not just be honest if you have that capability
- 31:23Speaker 6: to do so.
- 31:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so too.
- 31:26Speaker 3: High school football is back WCHS Networks dot Com has

- 31:37Speaker 3: my daughter, it's hurricane, not hurricane because she grew up

- 31:42Speaker 3: thirty hosting Huntington and Thursday the kickoff Hoover against Independence
- 31:46Speaker 3: on ninety six point one. Now that game's been slid
- 31:49Speaker 3: back for heat. I don't remember that ever happening before
- 31:51Speaker 3: they slid it back. Today o'clock they're still going to
- 31:53Speaker 3: cover it, And of course, the big one across Metro

- 32:20Speaker 3: Today we've been talking a lot about the media, how
- 32:22Speaker 3: they cover in state and deal with the governor and
- 32:24Speaker 3: all this. So I had an idea, what does the
- 32:27Speaker 3: national media, what does the d C press? What does
- 32:29Speaker 3: DC itself think of the representatives that West Virginia sends
- 32:33Speaker 3: to Washington d C. Our two senators and our to
- 32:35Speaker 3: House of Representative Delegates. So I've reached out to Eric Garcia.
- 32:38Speaker 3: He's a great congressional reporter. I've had a long standing
- 32:41Speaker 3: relation to him.
- 32:41Speaker 5: He's good.
- 32:42Speaker 3: So if he says I talked to Joe Manchin about this,
- 32:43Speaker 3: it's because he actually bumped him to him in the hallway,
- 32:45Speaker 3: asking him the questions his point of view of West
- 32:49Speaker 3: Virginia's elected representatives in Washington d C. Don't miss this.

- 36:33Speaker 5: Eric Garcia, thanks so much for having me, Drew.
- 36:36Speaker 3: I thrilled to have you, buddy. I want to do
- 36:38Speaker 3: something fun because we've been talking a lot about the
- 36:40Speaker 3: States press relationship inside the state. You're part of those
- 36:45Speaker 3: evil Washington people, right, these people are You're they? You're them,
- 36:49Speaker 3: You're those guys.
- 36:50Speaker 5: You're one of them.
- 36:52Speaker 3: You've heard all that kind of stuff, but you do
- 36:54Speaker 3: really good work. I wanted to ask you for the
- 36:56Speaker 3: people of West Virginia, what the reputation of people's they're
- 37:01Speaker 3: representatives and their people in Washington.
- 37:03Speaker 6: D c is.
- 37:03Speaker 5: Let's start with Senator Capito very quietly, because she's not
- 37:08Speaker 5: the flash is on social media and stuff. But you
- 37:11Speaker 5: and I have talked before.
- 37:12Speaker 3: There's superstar senators, and then there's political senators, and then
- 37:16Speaker 3: there's effective senators. Very quietly, Senator capitol has become a
- 37:20Speaker 3: very effective senator. Whatever your politics are, she gets things done,
- 37:23Speaker 3: She's built relationships, she's.
- 37:25Speaker 5: On the right committee.
- 37:25Speaker 3: She got halle Berry in the West Virginia on halle
- 37:27Speaker 3: Berry's birthday. That's got to count for something. What's her
- 37:31Speaker 3: reputation there is That a fair way to put it that,
- 37:33Speaker 3: whether you like her politics or not, she's become effective.
- 37:37Speaker 8: Absolutely it is the case. I mean, you can't deny
- 37:39Speaker 8: that she gets stuff done. She is the top Republicans
- 37:44Speaker 8: on environment and public work. She gets along really well
- 37:47Speaker 8: with Tom Carper, who's the top Democrat as a chairman
- 37:50Speaker 8: public committee I mean is Republicans in the Senate, which
- 37:53Speaker 8: it looks like it's very likely she's going to be
- 37:56Speaker 8: the chairwoman of that. She's also on the Appropriation Community.
- 38:00Speaker 8: And you and I know this, and you know that
- 38:03Speaker 8: you know they're saying there's Democrats, there's Republicans and there's appropriators.
- 38:07Speaker 8: Appropriators are the ones who writes the budgets. They're the
- 38:10Speaker 8: ones who, uh who set afot all the money. These
- 38:15Speaker 8: are the people. These are the se when you got
- 38:16Speaker 8: all the Congress critters, you know, doing their stuff. The
- 38:19Speaker 8: appropriators are the ones who sit down write how much
- 38:22Speaker 8: money is going to be spent at the end of
- 38:23Speaker 8: the day. And she's also just really effective at bringing
- 38:26Speaker 8: home money for West Virginia. If you look at the
- 38:28Speaker 8: recentle streats and budgets and appropriations built, she brings home
- 38:33Speaker 8: a killing And I think, I mean, this is this
- 38:36Speaker 8: is this is the old Robert bird thing, right, you know, yeah,
- 38:39Speaker 8: you just get this is why Robert birt hels so
- 38:41Speaker 8: many darned things named for him in West Virginia is
- 38:45Speaker 8: because uh, poorer states, states with not as much income,
- 38:48Speaker 8: states of modes manly high earners need federal money. Uh
- 38:53Speaker 8: or states with the states with people without as many
- 38:55Speaker 8: college degrees need federal money to to to succeed and drive.
- 38:58Speaker 8: She's also on the on the Congress Science and Essas
- 39:00Speaker 8: to be You know, what's actually funny is that, you know,
- 39:03Speaker 8: with all this talk about set up Minority leader Mitch
- 39:05Speaker 8: McConnell stepping aside. What blows my mind is that there
- 39:09Speaker 8: would be a great I can't think of a better
- 39:11Speaker 8: way to quote unquote own the Libs than to have
- 39:16Speaker 8: a woman set up an Nordy leader and chliborough capital
- 39:19Speaker 8: would be front of the classroom me. But nobody's even
- 39:22Speaker 8: thinking about it.
- 39:24Speaker 3: Yeah, she may not want that to be fair there
- 39:26Speaker 3: because the three Johns are going to fight each other
- 39:28Speaker 3: for it. But we'll talk about that another time. We're
- 39:31Speaker 3: gonna have a transition in West Virginia with Joe Manchin
- 39:33Speaker 3: stepping off the scene. Look, he's been a fixture point
- 39:36Speaker 3: in West Virginia politics for twenty years now. Of course
- 39:39Speaker 3: we know the family leg legacy going back to his
- 39:41Speaker 3: uncle A. James Mansion. It got ugly at the end.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Is that fair to say it got messy at the end.
- 39:47Speaker 3: His reputation I think took a hit on all sides.
- 39:51Speaker 3: What do you think the legacy of Joe manchon as
- 39:53Speaker 3: he steps aside finally from his Senate purchase, Because a
- 39:55Speaker 3: lot of the last couple of years, Man, if you
- 39:57Speaker 3: were doing anything in the Senate, it was going to
- 39:58Speaker 3: go through Joe Mansion's office. One way or the other.
- 40:00Speaker 6: Right.
- 40:01Speaker 8: I think Joe Manchin was the Emperor of the Senate.
- 40:04Speaker 8: I think you called him the captain of the Senate.
- 40:06Speaker 14: Uh.
- 40:07Speaker 8: Look, I mean when it came down to it, when
- 40:09Speaker 8: Democrats had a trifecta and they had fifty seasons Senate
- 40:13Speaker 8: as you said, anything that Democrats wanted need to go
- 40:17Speaker 8: through Joe manchon. And I've I've heard plenty of stories
- 40:20Speaker 8: about advocates going of the hill and uh, you know,
- 40:24Speaker 8: senators saying, leot, we want to get this through. But
- 40:28Speaker 8: but but Joe Manchin.
- 40:29Speaker 14: Doesn't like it.
- 40:31Speaker 8: So I think his legacy, you know, at the end
- 40:33Speaker 8: of the day, his legacy is really it's a couple
- 40:36Speaker 8: of things. One is, you know, obviously his baby was
- 40:42Speaker 8: the infrastructure bill, but that was what he really wanted
- 40:44Speaker 8: to do. To his legacy is you know, I needn't
- 40:48Speaker 8: build that better. And uh, but but the three like
- 40:51Speaker 8: you know a lot of people say, oh, well, ex Senator,
- 40:55Speaker 8: they voted one in line with Joe Manchin, with Joe Biden.
- 41:00Speaker 8: I actually no, they're voted one hundred percent in line
- 41:01Speaker 8: with Joe Manjen we can put up and Joe Manchin
- 41:03Speaker 8: waden would pass the Setate and even if it wasn't
- 41:05Speaker 8: necessarily all of what Joe Biden wanted, so he was
- 41:08Speaker 8: the agenda center. And then I think the other one
- 41:10Speaker 8: is the Inflation Reduction Act.
- 41:13Speaker 7: Look after he killed Buck Butter Bill Duck Gutter, he
- 41:16Speaker 7: negotiated with let Truck Schumer for.
- 41:18Speaker 8: The majority Leader Truck Shumer right, that Deill.
- 41:22Speaker 7: Basically is his bill.
- 41:24Speaker 8: But you know, he left that whole process kind of
- 41:28Speaker 8: I don't want to stay bitter, but very.
- 41:31Speaker 7: Disillusioned because he didn't like how the.
- 41:33Speaker 8: Administration was implementing it. He really wanted more. I guess
- 41:36Speaker 8: he could say of it all of the above strategies.
- 41:39Speaker 8: Joseph of bios Royds was a fantastic before over at
- 41:41Speaker 8: seven and four noted that, like, the issue is that
- 41:44Speaker 8: mansion was kind of come up as own sets because
- 41:47Speaker 8: the tax credits for electric cars and electric vehicles were
- 41:50Speaker 8: so successful that it required that people that you know,
- 41:53Speaker 8: there were just warned enough electric vehicles in the United
- 41:55Speaker 8: States and car battery manufacturing in the US, so people
- 41:57Speaker 8: had to buy them from China. So I think his
- 42:00Speaker 8: legacy is, you know, it's one that a lot of
- 42:03Speaker 8: was Virginia might not like beause the fact that you know,
- 42:07Speaker 8: if the Biden administration implemented so much folks so renewables.
- 42:10Speaker 8: But at the end of the day, you know, he
- 42:13Speaker 8: was really keen on the fact that a lot of
- 42:16Speaker 8: jobs are going to come to West Virginia. And you know,
- 42:18Speaker 8: ten twenty years down the road, when there are electric
- 42:20Speaker 8: vehicle manufacturers in West Virginia, that's the Hugo Mansions legacy.
- 42:24Speaker 7: People who would like have a career and have a
- 42:27Speaker 7: pension and have.
- 42:28Speaker 8: A job at an electric vehicle manufacturer, you can pay
- 42:31Speaker 8: Joe Manchin.
- 42:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:33Speaker 3: Eric Garcia, Chief Congression correspondent, Washingon Bureau chief for the Independent,
- 42:37Speaker 3: make sure you're following him online and on social media.
- 42:39Speaker 3: The West Virginia has been a victim of of course,
- 42:43Speaker 3: the population declined, we're down to only two congressional district
- 42:46Speaker 3: But Representative Carol Miller's kind of interesting because again another
- 42:51Speaker 3: doesn't keep a super hot profile, but is in the
- 42:54Speaker 3: House now. The House, though, is a very different beast
- 42:56Speaker 3: where West Virginia has been at the forefront of the
- 42:58Speaker 3: US Senate for really years, going back with various things.
- 43:02Speaker 3: Very quiet in the Congression that but what's the reputation
- 43:05Speaker 3: of Representative Miller in the halls of Congress.
- 43:08Speaker 8: You know, it's funny you mentioned that because like the
- 43:10Speaker 8: reputation of Cheryl Miller is that she doesn't have a reputation.
- 43:15Speaker 8: You could you know, you could.
- 43:16Speaker 7: Say that it's good or bad. But uh, but but
- 43:19Speaker 7: but I think that like.
- 43:20Speaker 8: You know, for for better force, I mean, she she
- 43:22Speaker 8: was she did get in trouble back in the business.
- 43:28Speaker 8: Was better reward of this that she dot that she
- 43:30Speaker 8: that she didn't disclose some of her stock trades under
- 43:34Speaker 8: the Stock Act. That that that was kind of that
- 43:36Speaker 8: was kind of I guess you could say a mini
- 43:37Speaker 8: scandal for her. Uh but but but more over, more
- 43:41Speaker 8: than anything, I think that the biggest thing is that
- 43:45Speaker 8: you know, for better or for worse, she just doesn't
- 43:48Speaker 8: have a reputation. And I think that's just the best.
- 43:51Speaker 8: Uh that that's probably the best thing you could you
- 43:56Speaker 8: could have West Virginia. Is not to cause a lot
- 43:58Speaker 8: of fuss, not to cause a lot of about to
- 44:00Speaker 8: cause a lot of problems.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Uh.
- 44:01Speaker 8: She's on ways and means, which is always.
- 44:03Speaker 7: A good thing.
- 44:04Speaker 13: Uh.
- 44:05Speaker 8: But uh, you know, for for for a member of
- 44:08Speaker 8: Congress come to state, like let's you think out with
- 44:10Speaker 8: the population decline, but really just doesn't have such a
- 44:13Speaker 8: reputation at all.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Eric Garcia joining us UH representative Mooney is leaving the house,
- 44:22Speaker 3: but you already had to cover it a few times,
- 44:25Speaker 3: a messy exit with a whole lot of questions.
- 44:29Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, Alex Mooney is just you know, there's
- 44:32Speaker 8: no way around it. He's said under a think investigations,
- 44:34Speaker 8: he can played like dandy'll uh you know, say nothing
- 44:39Speaker 8: about like about his residency. More than anything, it's just
- 44:43Speaker 8: the thing about Mooney is that he really does show
- 44:47Speaker 8: I guess the best way to say it is he
- 44:50Speaker 8: shows the limits of a politician who's not Doald Trump
- 44:55Speaker 8: acting in a model way. He shows that there's not
- 44:59Speaker 8: really you know, obvious. He tried running for Senate. He
- 45:01Speaker 8: tried running. You know, it just didn't work out because
- 45:05Speaker 8: Jim Justice was just unbeautiful at the gable in that primary.
- 45:08Speaker 8: But really he just you know, it showed that he's
- 45:13Speaker 8: not you know again, he's he's leading without making any
- 45:16Speaker 8: real kind of distinctive impact. Obviously. He ran against Dave
- 45:21Speaker 8: McKinley in the primary in twenty twenty two, largely on
- 45:23Speaker 8: the basis that McKinley supported the bipart of the infrastructure
- 45:26Speaker 8: development mood. He did, but like you know, again, for
- 45:29Speaker 8: a state like Lesgi, as you say, he has a
- 45:31Speaker 8: population decline, a lot of had a lot of issues.
- 45:34Speaker 8: He really didn't do anything to benefit the state as
- 45:37Speaker 8: you know, or approving good lives.
- 45:41Speaker 3: Derek Garcia joining US. Okay, assuming he wins and with
- 45:44Speaker 3: all due respects to the electoral process. If Jim Justice
- 45:47Speaker 3: is elected to the Senate and moves up from governor
- 45:50Speaker 3: West Virginia to Senator from West Virginia, he's already got
- 45:53Speaker 3: a lot of inroads, a lot of talk.
- 45:55Speaker 5: He was recruited to run for this position.
- 45:57Speaker 3: He's openly said I don't want to go to Washington,
- 45:59Speaker 3: but he was. What's the Washington viewpoint about the possible
- 46:03Speaker 3: arrival of Jim Justice in the US Senate.
- 46:06Speaker 4: I think it is.
- 46:07Speaker 8: I think it's going to be fascinating because I think
- 46:09Speaker 8: that Justice is, as you know, he used to be
- 46:13Speaker 8: a Democrat for a little bit. Joe Manton convince him
- 46:15Speaker 8: to become a Democrat top governor, and then he's such parties.
- 46:19Speaker 7: I think the thing that.
- 46:21Speaker 8: A lot of it really depends on what happens with
- 46:26Speaker 8: with Donald Trump, with the presidential elections.
- 46:29Speaker 7: Because my guess is.
- 46:31Speaker 8: If it's Donald Trump at the president of United State,
- 46:33Speaker 8: the Repolican States set a majority, he is going to
- 46:36Speaker 8: be a lockstep both with things like judges possible Supreme
- 46:40Speaker 8: Court nominations.
- 46:43Speaker 7: But if he is, you know, he's he's had kind of.
- 46:46Speaker 8: A populist vet. If you remember when Manjum would kind
- 46:49Speaker 8: of waffle in on the American Rescue Plan, he was
- 46:51Speaker 8: kind of just telling Joe, hey, past this thing, we
- 46:55Speaker 8: need it.
- 46:56Speaker 3: Uh.
- 46:56Speaker 8: You know, it's possible that he could make some deal
- 46:59Speaker 8: with Democrats. He could vote excuse me, a Kamalaine Harris
- 47:03Speaker 8: as president. You know, it's possible to converse together. But again,
- 47:07Speaker 8: you know a lot of really depends on whether Trump,
- 47:09Speaker 8: uh Truf or Harrison is in the Oval office.
- 47:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it's going to be interesting. Eric Garcia appreciate the
- 47:17Speaker 3: time today, buddy, Thank you so much. Follow him Eric M.

- 49:34Speaker 5: Dale, Cooper's joining me.
- 49:35Speaker 6: Dale.
- 49:36Speaker 3: Let's let's end on a good note here real quick.
- 49:39Speaker 3: We mentioned my mom listening to the radio, and this
- 49:42Speaker 3: is a problem during w games because we'll be watching
- 49:44Speaker 3: the TV and the radio runs faster than the TV feeds,
- 49:47Speaker 3: So when she starts yelling, you know the play score
- 49:49Speaker 3: before you actually get to see it, which is a
- 49:50Speaker 3: little annoying, but that's okay.
- 49:52Speaker 5: We love her.
- 49:53Speaker 3: My mom's favorite player last year for WVU was Beanie Bishop.
- 49:56Speaker 5: It was not closed.
- 49:57Speaker 3: I actually had a little viral video of when he
- 49:59Speaker 3: ran the punt back in the Bowl game and you know,
- 50:02Speaker 3: she just lost her mind. But good news out undrafted
- 50:05Speaker 3: free agent he made the Steelers survive cutdown Day yesterday's
- 50:09Speaker 3: going to make the Steelers my mom's favorite player.
- 50:11Speaker 5: I just wanted to end on a good note.
- 50:13Speaker 3: Like to see, there's a long list by the way,
- 50:14Speaker 3: you go to various alis WU players that made NFL
- 50:18Speaker 3: cutdown Day on Tuesday, so go check that out. But
- 50:20Speaker 3: that's my good note of the day that Beanie Bishop
- 50:22Speaker 3: made the Steelers rotation be joining Zach Frazier. And at
- 50:26Speaker 3: about ten forty last night, my mom sent me a note,
- 50:28Speaker 3: which means she'd already fallen asleep.
- 50:29Speaker 5: Well gum songs.
- 50:30Speaker 3: She said, that's great, it's official. I'll be a Steelers fan.
- 50:33Speaker 3: So you can let weekly know this afternoon, at seventy
- 50:35Speaker 3: six years old, my mom has finally picked an NFL team.
- 50:37Speaker 6: And that's outstanding. Out I was a little worried about him, honestly.
- 50:40Speaker 6: He came out of the blocks great in the beginning
- 50:42Speaker 6: of preseason and issue yeah, and he didn't play much
- 50:45Speaker 6: the last couple of games, and you know, when you're
- 50:47Speaker 6: a rookie undrafted, you're thinking, man, if you don't get
- 50:49Speaker 6: in those last couple of games, are you going to
- 50:51Speaker 6: make the team. But apparently he presented himself well enough
- 50:53Speaker 6: in those first couple of games, where you know, I
- 50:55Speaker 6: think he was at one time he was competing for
- 50:57Speaker 6: a starting slot. I think at very worst he might
- 51:00Speaker 6: be able to slide into their nickel. And they're going
- 51:01Speaker 6: to run a lot more nickel this year. So you know,
- 51:03Speaker 6: a lot of WU things happening at the Steelers because
- 51:06Speaker 6: they got Fraser, Zach Fraser up there at center as well.
- 51:09Speaker 6: So there's always seems to be some kind of a
- 51:10Speaker 6: WU connection with Pitton, with the Steelers.
- 51:13Speaker 3: Don't say Pitt. Yeah, I know if you say Pitt right,
- 51:16Speaker 3: bad bad producer. And Zach Fraser I will quote and
- 51:20Speaker 3: I can't remember his name, right, I created him one
- 51:21Speaker 3: of the real good beat reporters for Steelers.
- 51:23Speaker 5: During the preseason game.
- 51:24Speaker 3: He said, Zach Fraser is slated to start and probably
- 51:26Speaker 3: will be for the next decade.
- 51:28Speaker 6: Yep, I mean he is.
- 51:29Speaker 3: If you go watch the breakdown tape and say, while
- 51:31Speaker 3: we're talking football, WCHS Networks has got you covered. For
- 51:34Speaker 3: all the high school games Friday night, Hurricane Huntington, that's
- 51:37Speaker 3: going to be a good one right here on five
- 51:39Speaker 3: to eighty ninety six point one. Go over there for
- 51:41Speaker 3: the kickoff game Hoover. It's going to be playing Independence.
- 51:45Speaker 3: That was Ghostly seven. They're going to move that back
- 51:46Speaker 3: to eight because of the heat. So apm and then
- 51:49Speaker 3: of course w Game Day from Metro News all day
- 51:51Speaker 3: long starting eight am. Of course the game is big.
- 51:53Speaker 3: Do you learn anything today?
- 51:54Speaker 7: Man?
- 51:55Speaker 6: A good show man. I appreciate it. Did a great
- 51:57Speaker 6: job and learned a lot of stuff, had a lot
- 51:59Speaker 6: of interesting guests.
- 51:59Speaker 3: One we got two really fun things to do tomorrow.
- 52:02Speaker 3: We're gonna debate the cell phones in school thing with
- 52:04Speaker 3: my buddy Frankie frank Garion, Gary Franklin, I can't even
- 52:08Speaker 3: say his name, Gary and Frankel. He's from down in Texas,
- 52:11Speaker 3: so he has one of those fun names. He'll be
- 52:13Speaker 3: on the debate the cell phones in school tomorrow. Also,
- 52:16Speaker 3: we're gonna talk space. Our buddy, doctor Michael Siegel. You've
- 52:18Speaker 3: heard him on other programming. He'll be back to talk
- 52:20Speaker 3: about space. I'll be back tomorrow. Dave Allen Show, five
- 52:24Speaker 3: eighty Live. So good being here. Thank you all.
- 52:26Speaker 5: Have a great day.
- 52:54Speaker 2: You see a Saint six point five, then Charleston one
- 52:56Speaker 2: oh four point five Cross Lant's w u VRC Media station.
- 53:01Speaker 2: We are proud to live here too,
