- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. A 17-year-old from Paradise has been charged
- 0:10Speaker 2: with dangerous driving in connection with a stunting incident on
- 0:14Speaker 2: Kenmount Road in St. John's last week. An older model
- 0:18Speaker 2: Corvette pulled out of the parking lot of the A
- 0:20Speaker 2: & W last Thursday evening following a car meet and,
- 0:23Speaker 2: with phones recording, proceeded to spin around in traffic, narrowly
- 0:28Speaker 2: avoiding hitting other vehicles. RNC say the teen's license has
- 0:33Speaker 2: been suspended and he was ticketed for stunting. The juvenile
- 0:37Speaker 2: is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
- 0:40Speaker 2: RNC is working with the Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car
- 0:44Speaker 2: Club and will have an increased presence at upcoming car
- 0:48Speaker 2: meets to deter unsafe behavior. Closing submissions continued yesterday in St.
- 0:54Speaker 2: John's Provincial Court in the trial of accused sex offender
- 0:57Speaker 2: Tony Humby. Richard Duggan reports.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Humby, who has pled not guilty to the 72 charges
- 1:04Speaker 3: against him, sat quietly in the courtroom, only breaking his
- 1:07Speaker 3: forward gaze to sip on water. The day started with
- 1:10Speaker 3: defense lawyer Mark Grushi's closing arguments. Crown Prosecutor Deidre Badcock
- 1:14Speaker 3: began her submissions in the afternoon. Grushi questioned whether the
- 1:18Speaker 3: accusations against Humby could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt
- 1:21Speaker 3: given that witness statements changed over time. Grushi also argued
- 1:25Speaker 3: reasoning prejudice, which means that just because a person did
- 1:28Speaker 3: something wrong doesn't mean they're guilty of a criminal offense. Badcock, meanwhile,
- 1:32Speaker 3: believes that all charges against Humby should stand on their
- 1:35Speaker 3: own and that he be found guilty. She noted that
- 1:38Speaker 3: the victims who testified come from troubled backgrounds. She argued
- 1:41Speaker 3: that Humby weaponized that vulnerability, using it against them. That,
- 1:45Speaker 3: she argued, does not make their testimony any less believable.
- 1:49Speaker 3: She says Humby held things over his victims' heads, such
- 1:51Speaker 3: as booze, money, and drugs, and making them feel like
- 1:54Speaker 3: they had no choice but to engage in sexual activity
- 1:56Speaker 3: with him. Closing submissions continue in St. John's Provincial Court
- 2:00Speaker 3: Wednesday morning.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Fuel prices are down across the board this morning. Gas
- 2:05Speaker 2: drops 2.3 cents, putting it just shy of the 220-liter
- 2:10Speaker 2: mark in Metro. Diesel decreases by about 7 cents. The
- 2:15Speaker 2: price of furnace and stove oil is down by about
- 2:18Speaker 2: 6 cents. The president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor
- 2:22Speaker 2: Corporation says the hope is that they will have all
- 2:26Speaker 2: of their American liquor sold off by Christmas. There was
- 2:30Speaker 2: a glimmer of hope last month when it looked like
- 2:32Speaker 2: the NLC would start ordering American products again. However, that
- 2:36Speaker 2: idea was shelved after the breakdown of Canada-U.S. trade talks.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Bruce Keating says last December they had roughly $ 3. 2 million
- 2:45Speaker 2: worth of alcohol to sell off. However, that number had
- 2:48Speaker 2: dropped significantly by the end of the first quarter of
- 2:51Speaker 2: the fiscal year in July.
- 2:53Speaker 1: At the end of the quarter that we're reporting on here,
- 2:57Speaker 1: That $ 3. 2 million was down to, I think, about $ 560, 000.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And as we sit here today, that's actually down below $ 300, 000.
- 3:06Speaker 1: So we think the bulk of that will be gone,
- 3:09Speaker 1: if not all of it, by Christmas.
- 3:11Speaker 2: British Columbia voters are heading to the polls in a
- 3:14Speaker 2: snap election set for October 24. The election comes less
- 3:18Speaker 2: than two years into NDP leader David Eby's mandate and
- 3:22Speaker 2: follows weeks of upheaval in the opposition BC Conservatives. Eby
- 3:26Speaker 2: says this is an existential moment for Canadians and British
- 3:30Speaker 2: Columbians and it's important to build a stronger BC. The
- 3:35Speaker 2: Conservative caucus called it a cynical election but says it
- 3:39Speaker 2: does provide opportunity for change. MasterChef Canada aired last night
- 3:45Speaker 2: and Newfoundland was there bringing traditional flavors to the countrywide contest.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Gander native Rebecca Abbott says she applied for MasterChef Canada
- 3:54Speaker 2: on a whim one night around Christmas and never expected
- 3:57Speaker 2: to hear anything back. Over half a year later, she's
- 4:00Speaker 2: a contestant and says she can hardly believe it. Abbott
- 4:04Speaker 2: says a big inspiration for her love for cooking came
- 4:07Speaker 2: from her mom, who she says is also a great cook.
- 4:11Speaker 4: I've loved cooking since I was probably five years old
- 4:13Speaker 4: in the kitchen with mom, just puttering around foot, always
- 4:16Speaker 4: like not your typical child. It was more like, what's
- 4:18Speaker 4: in that? Like, why are you putting that in there?
- 4:21Speaker 4: And then it led to, I want that. Can I
- 4:23Speaker 4: have it to eat? Um, university, I struggled, uh, food, um, insecurity.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I had went to the food bank a lot and
- 4:29Speaker 4: I was just trying to find ways to kind of
- 4:31Speaker 4: like make a meal out of nothing, you know, like
- 4:33Speaker 4: use my George Foreman grill, a little crock pot and
- 4:36Speaker 4: just trying to figure things out.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Some extra excitement this pumpkin season. Farmers in the United
- 4:42Speaker 2: States say all the rain this summer has been great
- 4:45Speaker 2: for their pumpkin crops. South Barrington, Illinois farmer Ryan Smith
- 4:50Speaker 2: says this year is one of the best he's ever
- 4:53Speaker 2: seen for pumpkins.
- 4:55Speaker 3: The rain has been good to us, so about 30
- 4:58Speaker 3: minutes south of here has not been good.
- 4:59Speaker 4: It's too much rain, but we're kind of in a
- 5:01Speaker 4: sweet spot.
- 5:02Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
