- 1:47And welcome back to the Boundary Corner Podcast along with my
- 1:50partners, Brian Siegler, a later Robin Jonathan Talley.
- 1:54He will be here in a few minutes.
- 1:55He is skidding down the road to get to his house.
- 1:58And as always, our favorite high school coach, Robbie Compton.
- 2:02I am Curtis Wilson and as always, we are brought to you by
- 2:05Doctor Jeremy Counts down at the Council Family Pharmacy three O
- 2:091 S Main St. in Blacksburg, your friendly neighborhood pharmacy.
- 2:13Check them out, fellows Levar always joining us.
- 2:18What's up, Levar, Brian, Robbie, Fellas, how's summertime going
- 2:23for y'all so far? Robbie asked me early.
- 2:27He's like, you got to top off that Jeep yet.
- 2:29I said yeah, I had it off a few times and been rolling around
- 2:34having some good times in the Jeep and trying to try to stay
- 2:38dry because it's been rainy as shit in Richmond.
- 2:40Yeah. Yeah, we've been hot and on the
- 2:45field and trying to prepare for another season, getting things
- 2:50together on the high school side of things so.
- 2:52Wait what what what wait out wait room every day get them in
- 2:57there we. Start every, We start every day.
- 2:59We do check in at 7:30, weights at 8 speed, Agility development
- 3:06usually about 9:00 and then skill development 10 to 10/30,
- 3:1310:45 somewhere around there. So we're it's good 2 1/2, almost
- 3:193 hours every day of trying to prepare some young folks for
- 3:25four years of high school football.
- 3:28Hoping to get one or two to play after that.
- 3:31Robbie let let me ask this because obviously the kids are
- 3:34working out, how much work are y'all doing?
- 3:39Like are you, are you in tape? Like basically kids leave.
- 3:42Are you just looking at tape from basically noon to six O
- 3:45clock at night? No, no, no, it, it takes a lot
- 3:50of, you know, well here we've got a, a brand new turf field
- 3:55and, you know, some stadium renovation and stuff.
- 3:58OK. Getting, you know, but a lot of
- 4:00our stuff is like you said, it's some film work, preparing some
- 4:05stuff, just doing grounds work around keeping their practice
- 4:10field ready and stuff like that. You know, we, we do things a
- 4:16little differently than some places.
- 4:17We do a lot of laundry and things like that for the kids.
- 4:21We don't send stuff home with them.
- 4:23We don't ask the parents to, to take care of a lot of that
- 4:27stuff. We do a lot of that stuff on
- 4:28their own. Just things like that.
- 4:31Different plans today we worked on some just trying to get some
- 4:36letters sent out to different local businesses and churches
- 4:40and things to see if we can get some some meals for kids during
- 4:43game days this season, stuff like that.
- 4:46Little logistic things, but that's that's what a lot of the
- 4:49summer is I'm dealing a lot with trying to get licensure stuff
- 4:53finished and taking tests and getting some things like that.
- 4:56Since I changed my license as a teacher, I've gone from, I
- 5:02spent, let's see, 18 years. I spent 13 years in health and
- 5:08physical education and now I'm in special Ed working with their
- 5:13exceptional, exceptional students here and takes a lot to
- 5:20get that stuff going. I worked on some master's
- 5:22classes and doing some, some practice testing to finish that
- 5:28license. So got that on my plate along
- 5:31with all of it to you so. So it's for for you.
- 5:34The offseason is mixed bag being a high school coach.
- 5:38Watch the kids now do do you? Are they allowed in North
- 5:41Carolina for the kids to organize to do 7 O sevens?
- 5:46Oh yeah, go out. OK, because every state's
- 5:49different. Like some states are weird about
- 5:50that shit. Some states you go do that,
- 5:51they'll be like they're all ineligible now.
- 5:53They can't play because they went out and played seven O 7 at
- 5:55your field. No, we have and they can do
- 5:58anything they want to on their own.
- 6:00There are certain times in the summer, there's the week of
- 6:04always the week of the 4th of July in North Carolina.
- 6:08And then there's going to be a week at the end of towards the
- 6:11end of July, what they call Allstate Clinic Week.
- 6:16So they have all of our state rules, clinics, all of those
- 6:20things on that week. Those are considered dead
- 6:22periods. We're not allowed to have
- 6:24contact with the players in a, you know, from a coach's
- 6:29perspective, but the kids can get together and do stuff on
- 6:33their own however they want to. But other than those two day
- 6:37period weeks, you know, we can, we can work with the kids from
- 6:43the last day of school on through the summer, except on
- 6:47Sundays. All right.
- 6:52But I mean, we're, we're there's some limitations on amount of
- 6:56hours a day. There's no supposed to be no
- 6:58more than 3 hours a day. I think there's rules about if
- 7:04you do 2A day deals once the see the pre season stuff starts.
- 7:09If you do with two a day, one day, you have to have so many
- 7:12hours in between the two, so many total hours together and
- 7:16there has to be a day off in between, you know, stuff like
- 7:19that. So it's changed a lot from the
- 7:22time we played where we used to, you know, go at 6:00 in the
- 7:26morning and we'd leave sometimes 6 or 7 at night and we'll
- 7:29practice however long I have many times we needed to.
- 7:33Yeah, them 3A days were no joke. You did you, Ron.
- 7:37You weren't. You never made it to the to the
- 7:40experience at Fort Pickett, did you?
- 7:43I did not. No, that was pre dated me.
- 7:47My freshman year, man, we, we took that trip with Larry Smith
- 7:51and and that crowd to Fort Pickett for the camp.
- 7:56That was something different. Boy, it was just one a day, but
- 7:59it just was all day. Well, you're going to practice.
- 8:05One time long ass practice. Yeah, within that week with a
- 8:12with a Saturday scrimmage where we usually went and showed up
- 8:15and played Attlee and Hampton and we got to see all of that
- 8:21fun, take those butt kickings and come all back home.
- 8:24So. Well, wait, hold on, wait a SEC.
- 8:26Hampton would have been 9. Yes, exactly.
- 8:32So I did. I did the one like Jamboree that
- 8:35they had at U of R that time. You remember that one?
- 8:38Yes, that would have been, I think it would have been my
- 8:41junior year. Yeah, I think that's right.
- 8:47Yeah, Hampton. Hampton was there at that one
- 8:49too, and they were still. Yeah.
- 8:51Crushing. Whipping and you had you had the
- 8:53the Ronald Curry's and the the ones like that from Hampton.
- 8:58Yeah, it was. It was quite an adventure.
- 9:02So those. Are what you say.
- 9:05See. See that?
- 9:06Say now I'm going down a rabbit hole here.
- 9:08Oh, here he comes. Pull them in here.
- 9:12Look at it, Sally. He had it.
- 9:15Shelton. Looks different.
- 9:17And all of his beauty and glory. Little little little, fluffy and
- 9:23swollen. Don't get it wrong, I'm nowhere
- 9:28near as smart as Shelton is. Oh yeah, you pretty good.
- 9:32You make up the brunt. You make up the brute with the
- 9:35with what we lack in brain, I guess we're just talking about.
- 9:41The old school football days and how different it is now.
- 9:46Yes. Well, they would tell us they're
- 9:48talking about going to Jamboree and our little high school
- 9:51having to go up against Hampton High School where all those
- 9:55studs played Ronald Curry. I can't imagine seeing that.
- 10:01I mean, I can't imagine seeing. I can't imagine seeing that I've
- 10:04seen some good football players, but that that's next level.
- 10:07So the problem we had is that we were like the most rural AAA
- 10:12school in the whole damn state. Easily.
- 10:17Easily. Absolutely.
- 10:18I remember my first. I remember my first varsity
- 10:22playing time. I was tied in.
- 10:25We played a school called Mcadore High School.
- 10:29That's what Bo Jackson went to high school at and I was 9th
- 10:33grader and I've seen the I was the third string tight end and
- 10:39I've seen the first two tight ends get knocked out of the
- 10:42game. Everybody on their team had gold
- 10:45teeth. They had they had gold teeth and
- 10:49goatees. I was in 9th grade.
- 10:52They had a kid on their team that went to Alabama.
- 10:54His name was Matt Caddell. He played wide receiver.
- 10:58They called Mackadore Smackadore.
- 11:00That's how good they would they would kill people.
- 11:02They beat us like 56 to 0. This kid, Matt Caddill, they
- 11:07called him the pocket Rocket. He ran A4240 and if you kicked
- 11:12him the ball, he was running it back.
- 11:14I think he I think he had three touchdowns against us.
- 11:16He's the fastest person I've ever seen on the field.
- 11:21And I've seen Tyrone Prothrow on the field too.
- 11:23He was pretty fast, but Matt Caddell was the fastest human
- 11:27I've ever seen with a football in his hand.
- 11:29I. I can tell you a fast one that
- 11:30I've seen and y'all will know the names Mr. David Wilson.
- 11:34Oh yeah, I heard about that. I.
- 11:35Didn't have to play. Against him, that's a that's AI.
- 11:38Couldn't imagine seeing some of that like.
- 11:40I still ain't figured that. Look, that man, The last time, I
- 11:43think it was the last time I coached against him, I think it
- 11:45was a senior year, He had 260 yards rushing and five
- 11:52touchdowns, and I don't know how many he would have had if he'd
- 11:56like got thrown out in the third quarter for doing the somersault
- 11:59in the end zone. Yeah.
- 12:05Well, with something that was 15 years ago, I still didn't
- 12:09figured out how to stop him, right?
- 12:13Him landed on his neck unfortunately is what finally
- 12:16stopped him. I well let's get into it.
- 12:19What we're doing tonight couple weeks ago we did the offensive
- 12:22hokey dream team tonight we're going to do the defensive hokey
- 12:25dream team, but we got a few things to unload before we get
- 12:29there as always, and I want to start with basketball.
- 12:32Alex called it out just a couple seconds ago with Hokies
- 12:35basketball. Might be back Because I y'all,
- 12:39y'all, they y'all want me to pronounce this right.
- 12:41Go for it man. You got to do this one.
- 12:44You got. F Dallas, I think that's the
- 12:47pronunciation officially signed. We just call him Neo.
- 12:54Neo, call him Neo and. The one I mean the one, the one
- 12:59but. Legitimately, without a shadow
- 13:02of a doubt, the I mean, no, no disrespect to Rodney Rice, but
- 13:08literally the best recruit Mike Young has ever pulled.
- 13:12This kid was legitimately going to get drafted somewhere in the
- 13:14second round of the NBA this year.
- 13:17He chose to defer smart, in my opinion, because I think he's
- 13:22going to tear it up. So, Tally, does Mike Young have
- 13:26an excuse not to win games this year?
- 13:28Mike? Young, I'm going to give him a
- 13:33pass today, man, he done good today.
- 13:34So I'm going to just keep quiet and we're going to see what he
- 13:37going to do. I did see a quote where he said
- 13:41he said that the basketball team was just better this year.
- 13:44I'm like, well, I fucking hope so.
- 13:50But I think, I think that it will be.
- 13:52So we'll see. We'll see what he got.
- 13:54I mean, you got to have some, you got to have some some talent
- 13:58to play. I mean, it's not the SEC but the
- 14:01ACC. You got to have some talent and
- 14:02some length to play there. So hopefully he has that in in
- 14:07this year's team. I mean, I think we finally got a
- 14:12a good combination of enough ball handlers with a really good
- 14:15amount of size down low, but with most everybody still able
- 14:21to step out, hit the shot outside if they need to with,
- 14:25with an exception here or there. It's really lining up to to be
- 14:30definitely the most talented top to bottom we've been in the last
- 14:36handful of years, definitely since the the ACC Championship
- 14:39run. Keith.
- 14:41That group, Keith alumina? Yeah, exactly.
- 14:43Yeah. So yeah, at least the most
- 14:46talented since that group, at least top to bottom.
- 14:49I feel like you, you actually have a starting five, you feel
- 14:53pretty good about it. A couple guys coming off the
- 14:55bench that can hold their own. I don't think we really had that
- 15:00since then. You know, I think you got a
- 15:05whole lot of potential. We've got to see if they put the
- 15:07pieces together and that they play like a team and can win
- 15:11like a team. But as far as just the
- 15:14individual parts right now, it's definitely looking pretty good.
- 15:17That's what I want to see from Mike Young more than anything
- 15:20because a couple of those teams, 20/20/2019 right 2019-2020
- 15:271/20/21 there were times where early they just didn't they look
- 15:31disjointed and you looked and said, well, these are talented.
- 15:36He can't have that happen this year.
- 15:37Like there's too much talent to have that funk of well, I got to
- 15:42figure out everything. No, you, you got to figure that
- 15:45out this year. And if not, you've got to either
- 15:48let Lowell attack or Neo do his thing because that kids been
- 15:54playing with grown ass men in the Greek league and been
- 15:57putting up somewhere between 7 and 10 points a game.
- 16:00Got looked at that the NBA and that's I think Tally you've kind
- 16:04of there's been numerous times in the last four years Again, we
- 16:08don't are we as intense on basketball as where football, no
- 16:13basketball lasts from October to March.
- 16:15It's a long way. You get too intense, you get
- 16:17burned out. But you've always said Tally,
- 16:19I'll never forget this. We just don't have a player that
- 16:21we literally can say here's the ball, please go get us the next
- 16:266 points, right? And I think that's where Neo, it
- 16:29looks like he could be that guy. It's just like he go.
- 16:33Let me step back. Most of the teams that you see
- 16:36that are, you know, good teams have a dude like that.
- 16:39They can just take over the game, create his own shot, draw
- 16:43double teams to be able to kick the ball.
- 16:46I mean, Mike Young has to draw up some stuff for us to get
- 16:49shots off and usually we've got, you know, 6 foot guards trying
- 16:53to shoot over 6 foot guards on the other team.
- 16:56Had to get longer, had to get bigger and you had to get more
- 17:00talented. So seems like he's done that.
- 17:03So I mean, I'm, I'm hoping the best.
- 17:04I like watching basketball. You know, I don't dislike Mike
- 17:07Young, think people think I dislike him.
- 17:09I don't dislike him. I just, I didn't get that.
- 17:11I don't get the hype from nothing.
- 17:13Like if you if you ain't winning, you just ain't winning
- 17:15so. You talk about being intense in
- 17:18Virginia Tech basketball. I mean, I've spent the last 25
- 17:23years and working everything I can in high school football.
- 17:27Last thing I remember about Virginia Tech basketball is Ace
- 17:29Custis so. Throw it back, Riley.
- 17:33I'm trying. I'm trying guys.
- 17:36Well, basically, I think once you once November hits, you just
- 17:38want to go to sleep for six weeks, get home.
- 17:43Thanksgiving and Christmas, then I can get back to football in
- 17:46February. There you go.
- 17:48All right, let's tell Quick. We're going to hit some 2026
- 17:51recruiting. Been a lot of buzz on that.
- 17:54Obviously everybody saw Cornell Warren decommitted, best
- 17:57prospect we had. And then we get Cameron Johnson,
- 18:01the defensive end out of green run down in down in the 7573
- 18:06star guy. And then we get Cam Gillespie
- 18:10out of North Carolina defensive lineman.
- 18:13Probably more shape it up to be AD tackle out of Mooresville
- 18:16High School. But as of right now, 2026 class
- 18:22ain't looking great. You got 4 commits.
- 18:25One of them's a legacy kicker. No disrespect to Will love he's
- 18:30I think they put him as probably the best kicker in the country.
- 18:34But this is usually the time where we start seeing one
- 18:39through a week and by July. We got 1 coming tomorrow or so
- 18:43everyone is saying so. Oh, OK, I don't know about.
- 18:47What's the kicker's name? Well, love, it's John's little
- 18:50brother. What you talking about man?
- 18:53That's the that's the best player we could have.
- 18:55The best player on the team last year was who?
- 18:59Just the love shoot. Got the little?
- 19:02Brother, I'm being I'm being funny.
- 19:03But hey, if the if, if the love can bring the the love like this
- 19:08love, we want to stay with that love.
- 19:10So that might be. Points is points.
- 19:12That may be the. Best automatic from inside 50.
- 19:14Listen, that may be the best recruit that we have.
- 19:18So Mr. Love, get your little brother right.
- 19:22Keep him on hill. I can, I can tell you from a
- 19:24high school perspective, the way things have changed recently,
- 19:32recruiting has gotten a little weird and a little crazy from
- 19:36the high school side of things. And I know, I know Virginia Tech
- 19:41focuses a lot on high school recruiting and things like that.
- 19:44And there, there's been some lag, there's been some craziness
- 19:48with the way some things have changed, kind of waiting for
- 19:50these these rulings and things to come through and figure out
- 19:55what they were going to do. So I wouldn't get too worked up
- 20:00about how it's gone thus far. And that's just my opinion from
- 20:04this side of it. But I mean, it's there's
- 20:08definitely some kids that are sitting back and waiting to see
- 20:10what was going to happen with those whole situations.
- 20:13So it may you may see a a real take off and some things coming
- 20:17soon I think. Yeah.
- 20:20I mean, when we talked about it, we're like we had the Warren
- 20:22decommit. We kind of knew that that wasn't
- 20:25firm even when it happened, right?
- 20:28Like so you know, he said he was still going to take other
- 20:31visits. We knew that his star was rising
- 20:34a little bit when he committed. We knew that some of the bigger
- 20:38dogs in the SEC, we're going to start coming calling.
- 20:42Sounds like that's kind of where, where things went.
- 20:45So, you know, here we are. You know, it sucks losing your
- 20:49best commit. We move forward.
- 20:51We got a couple more. I said when when Warren
- 20:53decommitted, we got about six weeks to get at least eight more
- 20:56in the boat before you can start feeling like this isn't a
- 20:59disaster. And we got 2IN and probably
- 21:01getting one more tomorrow. So we're, we're on a pretty
- 21:03decent track since then. And it's been less than a week
- 21:05since I made that that tweet. So we'll see how it goes.
- 21:11I'm I'm still not feeling great about the 26th class, But like I
- 21:16said in that tweet, I don't know, it's not time to panic,
- 21:18but it's definitely time to need to see some results.
- 21:21And so just looking forward to seeing what prime company can
- 21:26can kind of pull through in the home stretch here.
- 21:28Get like 5 get get 5 kids from high school and get dressed out
- 21:31of the portal because you can figure out who the hell plays
- 21:35high school kids. Dice roll.
- 21:37We're we have to face a harsh reality here too, is there is
- 21:41some some uneasy feelings about what's going on.
- 21:48You know, you got you got a new offensive system and
- 21:51coordinator, you got a new defensive system and
- 21:53coordinator, you got questions about how long do things will
- 21:57hold together and what's going. And that's not easy to recruit
- 22:00kids now when they can make money going anywhere anyway.
- 22:04I mean that that's a harsh reality to it.
- 22:07It is, it is, and right now it isn't.
- 22:09Those colored glasses, I know how this works.
- 22:15Well, mine are getting rosier by the day.
- 22:17So that's the way recruiting's going.
- 22:18We got four in the boat. Hopefully more to come over the
- 22:21next month or so. Hopefully we can talk about it.
- 22:25I know we are working to get somebody on in July to discuss
- 22:29low high school recruiting. Hopefully that comes through.
- 22:32But real quick, before we get into our defensive drinking,
- 22:35Brian did were you able to make a slide for Robbie's offensive
- 22:38stuff or no? I was not, but Robbie, I want
- 22:41you to to to run through it and tell me.
- 22:43Tell me what you got. Lord, let.
- 22:45Me talk on the quarterback. Hold up.
- 22:48Quarterback was was I can remember that one that was easy.
- 22:51That was Tyron Taylor and I you know you'd I'll I'll hear degree
- 22:59especially with people my age. Why wasn't Michael Vick?
- 23:05Hey, Michael Vick was an, they called it the Victoria
- 23:10experience for a reason. But when I'm putting together a
- 23:14whole team and I want to do, I want to run, I want to throw, I
- 23:17want to do it all and with the leadership and with the things
- 23:21like that. Tyrod Taylor just kind of did it
- 23:24for me. I had, I had a little bit
- 23:26different experience. I had a a player at the time
- 23:29that was being recruited that talk to him all the time.
- 23:33I spent a lot of time and a couple of visits with, with the
- 23:37kid that I had there and I hung out with Tyrod's dad quite a
- 23:40bit. So I mean, I got to know the kid
- 23:43and and the way things work. So that's who I went with as my
- 23:47quarterback, my running backs. I said David Wilson, obviously
- 23:55Kevin Jones and Basil Tooten. I just.
- 23:58Me and you Robbie, me and you match for match baby speed.
- 24:02I just like that combination. All three of them had the speed
- 24:07to to break anything at any time and hit the edge, but none of
- 24:11the three of them were ever worried about I got to get to
- 24:14the edge because I'm not going through the mess in the middle.
- 24:17All three of them would hit the mess in the middle and never
- 24:19worry about it. And that that was the kind of
- 24:22thing I like as a tight end. I had Jeff King and Mr. Bucky
- 24:29Hodges because Bucky Hodges was a tight end and Logan Thomas was
- 24:34a quarterback. And if you want to fight about
- 24:37it, we win. Hey, we got enough of that in
- 24:41the comments on that. Oh, we got how you feel about
- 24:44that behind you on that, Logan Thomas.
- 24:45Yeah, he was pretty firm about that on that last show, though.
- 24:49He was. Going to it overall for a
- 24:51lifetime. Logan Thomas probably a better
- 24:54tight end. Logan Thomas never played sniper
- 24:57tight end at Virginia Tech, so I couldn't make him a tight end.
- 25:00Didn't he catch a player from Tyrod?
- 25:03He did. Possibly I did.
- 25:05Robbie, come on. He said possibly.
- 25:09I don't know. I know he's coaching at
- 25:12Brookville High School in Lynchburg now.
- 25:13Yes, he is. Him and Zach McRae, both of them
- 25:16coaching down to Brookville. Yeah, Zach McRae.
- 25:19That's the name everybody thought was going to be it 15
- 25:23years ago. But you know what?
- 25:26He's doing good things out there.
- 25:28Jason from SWVA What's going on? I, Robbie next.
- 25:35Wide receivers We had Antonio Freeman, Eddie Royal, Andre
- 25:41Davis, Bron Steele, Carol Vale. Bron Steele.
- 25:48Reference Bron. Steele.
- 25:51Bron Steele. Bron Steele just had a special
- 25:53place in the fact that as a as a young Virginia Tech fan, that
- 25:58was the one that I remember that kind of stood out.
- 26:01He may not have been the best receiver they ever had.
- 26:04I can probably name a lot of them that had better stats
- 26:06overall at some point. But a hell of a Sugar Bowl
- 26:09though. And I had Brian Steele jersey
- 26:12was probably the first Virginia Tech jersey I ever had.
- 26:15So it just kind of stuck for me. And Carol Dale is, it's old
- 26:21school, but Oh yeah, that name stick forever in.
- 26:25Virginia you'll hear it more in my in my offensive line group.
- 26:29I'm I'm I'm a pepper some some older guys in there just because
- 26:33they had a different kind of mentality when it came to the
- 26:37game of football that you can all.
- 26:40I can't wait for Tally's face for one of them, just to see
- 26:43what he says. But go ahead, Robbie.
- 26:45OK, so offensive line we have Dwayne Brown, Jake Grove because
- 26:51he's my all time favorite player anyway.
- 26:54Wyatt Teller, Christian Darasol, Jim Pyne, Buzz Nutter.
- 27:01George. And Blake Dechristopher, I think
- 27:05I put too many old lineman in there, but whatever.
- 27:08You got Buzz Nutter in there. Buzz Nutter in.
- 27:12There, Buzz Nutter and George Priest now.
- 27:15I mean, you can. You can go in and look, you're
- 27:19not going to find stats with offensive lineman and stuff back
- 27:21then they, you know, nobody counted pancakes or stuff in
- 27:25their 30s, forties, 50s all those years.
- 27:28But they did. But they were made with flour
- 27:30and butter. Yeah, exactly.
- 27:31Something to be said about their World Championships and the pros
- 27:38and their longevity and the years they played.
- 27:41That's a different kind of different kind of mentality on
- 27:47the offensive line that it takes anyway.
- 27:49And you put some guys like that in there and we got something
- 27:52it'll teach the rest of those guys a little bit more grit.
- 27:55Oh, is grit a cool word that we can say now one time?
- 28:03As long as you don't pass down the hill.
- 28:05But it was a weird SO. As long as you don't put it on
- 28:10the helmet, we'll have an entire monologue about it in the locker
- 28:13room. One day.
- 28:15I wonder what? I wonder what Fuente is doing
- 28:18right now. Central Standard Time.
- 28:2310,000,010 million in the bank that's being paid over the last
- 28:28few years. He got paid what, like 7 and a
- 28:31he got 20 million in the bank. What would you be doing?
- 28:34Will he ever coach? Will he ever be a college coach
- 28:36of Year I? Don't think he is.
- 28:40I don't think he is. I got 40 million in the bank.
- 28:42I ain't coaching no more. I ain't.
- 28:44Doing shit I'm almost. Certain talk about football.
- 28:50All day paid. I mean, man, we really broke
- 28:53that man when he then he broke that.
- 28:55Man really broke us. I mean, yes, you mean that man
- 29:01got money and got it right now? He's doing all right.
- 29:03We're the ones still trying to figure out if we can get this
- 29:06paid back. We're broke.
- 29:07He broke us, but we broke him mentally.
- 29:14He ain't even going to try to get back into the game.
- 29:16They call it a break up. We broke he up.
- 29:20That's what this is. That's what happened.
- 29:27All righty. Do we Do we want to hear a recap
- 29:29of Tally's Tally's cruise here before we get into things?
- 29:32Oh yeah, Tally went on the big, big, big boat.
- 29:35No, no, we got to have at least one story.
- 29:39I mean, last time it was the Alchemy Bar making you some sort
- 29:43of jalapeno Margarita. It was for you.
- 29:47It was pandemonium is what it was on this boat.
- 29:51I mean, it's like 40 of us that went together, you know, kids,
- 29:58grown-ups. At one time I started preaching
- 30:04in the he was in the piano bar and they asked me the same.
- 30:07And I thought that the drink package told me to preach, so I
- 30:12started preaching. It's a video.
- 30:14It's a video out there. I'm just saying a.
- 30:17Drink package will tell you something.
- 30:18That drink package will make you, you know, turn you into a
- 30:21different beast. Man, it ain't a lot.
- 30:24I've tried my best to hit 15 a day.
- 30:27It didn't work, but I mean, I did 15.
- 30:30I didn't drink them all. I was giving them away, doing
- 30:32whatever I had to do. But it was a good trip, man.
- 30:35We had a great trip. We went to the Dominican
- 30:39Republic, we went to Puerto Rico, we went to Saint Thomas.
- 30:43St. Thomas is beautiful, just like a
- 30:46beautiful place, man. It's kind of like, you know,
- 30:49being a kid from Alabama and usually seeing like trees and
- 30:52skunks and stuff like that to go to a place like, and then like,
- 30:57I know what the country looks like.
- 30:58You know what I'm saying? I know it when you go to a place
- 31:01like Saint Thomas and you just look out, it's not just water
- 31:03because I'm not a huge water person, but just like their
- 31:06trees look beautiful, you know what I'm saying?
- 31:10Like everything is just different.
- 31:13You know, the sun shines a little bit different in places
- 31:16like that. Looks like a like a storybook
- 31:18man. So when we went to the Dominican
- 31:21Republic, we didn't go to a beach because we went to a beach
- 31:25at the other places. We just pretty much like walk
- 31:27the city and went to some shops and ate the local food and stuff
- 31:31like that. And that's, you know, that's
- 31:33that's I ain't going to say humbling because it wasn't like
- 31:37super bad there, but you know, to see people out hustling and
- 31:41selling stuff and, you know, trying to make a dollar like it
- 31:44just makes you appreciate what you do have.
- 31:46So that was cool too, though. It was cool.
- 31:49It was, we had a great time. The travel lag is horrible.
- 31:55Wife came back with COVID. Damn, we just fucked up over
- 32:00here man. I got to ask one question
- 32:02because we got you getting drunk.
- 32:04The food's always good. By the way, for everyone who's
- 32:07never been on the cruise, especially Carnival, do not miss
- 32:11Maine Diamond. Ever.
- 32:13You better go don't. Ever miss it?
- 32:14Go ask Brian. He missed it one night and I
- 32:18can't remember what you missed, but you went somewhere else and
- 32:20you were like, Nope, not again. I'm not skipping the next night.
- 32:23I will tell you, I will tell you on the boat that we went on on
- 32:27the Celebration. If anybody thinking about going
- 32:30on a cruise, if you can get to the Celebration, go because it's
- 32:32got like 30 restaurants. So if you do miss Maine dining,
- 32:37Maine dining shoes are good, but it's so many other places to
- 32:40eat. Some of them you got to pay for.
- 32:42But like they had a chicken place on there, like Shaq's got
- 32:45a chicken restaurant on there. Awesome food, You know, of
- 32:48course, Guys Burgers, they had a dumpling place, they had a
- 32:52loaded fry place, just all type of crap, man.
- 32:56So we didn't, I couldn't, I couldn't even get to all the
- 32:59places. I didn't even explore the whole
- 33:01ship. That's how big you can.
- 33:03I mean, I felt like our little ship was big and you started
- 33:05talking about like 30 restaurants, like 9 like 18
- 33:09stories. It's like, holy shit, do they?
- 33:11Do the thing where they divide you like in neighborhoods and
- 33:13stuff too. Pretty, it feels like it.
- 33:15So we went to Guy Guy Fieri's got a restaurant on there called
- 33:21Pig and Anchor. So it's a BBQ restaurant, right?
- 33:24So we go to it, it's like the last day and it's maybe 10 of
- 33:27us. We go to it.
- 33:29We didn't even know they had a whole another bar and Infinity
- 33:34pool and hot tubs. All this stuff was behind the
- 33:39restaurant and I'm like what is this?
- 33:42Because everything on our ship mostly was like on floor
- 33:4516/17/18 something like that like this was floor 6 and they
- 33:50said Oh yes, pools all around there.
- 33:52Y'all didn't y'all ain't been back there.
- 33:53I'm like, well this is the last night.
- 33:56Yeah we ain't going tonight. So let me just enjoy this smoked
- 34:00chicken y'all and gave me last. Piece.
- 34:03Last piece What tables did you hit?
- 34:06How'd you do in the casino? You make money.
- 34:08Oh no, that's pitiful. The reason that they got that
- 34:12big night shift is because dummies like me going to that
- 34:15casino and leave money there, that's what.
- 34:18Don't go to the casino on that. What?
- 34:20Smashed you? What got you?
- 34:21What gained? Everything, man.
- 34:23I mean, I ain't going to say it smashed.
- 34:24We did. We probably broke even because I
- 34:26lost money and my wife won some. She got on the slot machine and
- 34:28won like 450 bucks. But I lost every bit of that.
- 34:32Just letting you know beforehand before she did that because she
- 34:36only went in that one night. I kind of went in there like 3
- 34:40to 4 nights, Got a little time by myself going there, play
- 34:43craps, lose a little bit, go back in there, play roulette,
- 34:46lose a little bit, play a little blackjack.
- 34:48So I lost on everything. I was Virginia Tech on that boat
- 34:52in that casino. I was losing every game.
- 34:56I was losing them close. I learned from Pride.
- 35:00I wasn't just losing. Barely missing them too buddy.
- 35:05That's what was happening to me, so.
- 35:07Man man was getting 14 all night in blackjack.
- 35:10He kept hitting, kept getting 8888.
- 35:13Even then, he was getting 20, the dealer was getting a four
- 35:16card 21. You just held on to your time
- 35:19now. Man.
- 35:24I don't, I guess blackjack is the worst.
- 35:26Like at least crap that's assembling to luck and you feel
- 35:28like sometimes if you get a bad shooter, it's just like, you
- 35:34know, it's like, oh man, like, oh, we're going to go good here.
- 35:37Let me let me. What is it?
- 35:39What was it called? Brian?
- 35:41I wish my neighbor Andrew was here.
- 35:42The. Let it ride.
- 35:44No. Oh.
- 35:45God no, no, not that table game. Fuck that table game.
- 35:47No, the not the pass line. The one that's above the pass
- 35:51line. Oh, you talk about the crap in
- 35:54the field? Field.
- 35:55Yeah, playing the field. How many times did you play the
- 35:58field? Like feeling good.
- 36:00And the next thing you know, they roll craps.
- 36:01Like you put a good bet down, we go hit a field number here and
- 36:04it's like 7. Like not only did I lose my
- 36:06parents, I lost. Field.
- 36:09I'd rather hit a 7 so everybody loses then hit like freaking 5.
- 36:14Nobody wins 5. You ain't.
- 36:16I'm not winning nothing if you're betting the field on five
- 36:19so. Y'all talking way above my head.
- 36:21I don't know anything about any of this.
- 36:23Don't learn fish table in there, say.
- 36:25Don't learn it. Don't.
- 36:27Don't. Don't worry about none of that.
- 36:29Robbie. You doing good?
- 36:30No. No, no, we're going to take
- 36:31Robbie on a cruise with us and get him on the craps table.
- 36:33Robbie, have a blast. No, I'll be there, redneck at
- 36:36the back of the boat casting my bait caster off the side.
- 36:40Oh yeah, they're going to kick you off of that, Robbie.
- 36:42Yeah, they will never. You don't like Then again, buddy
- 36:45boy. After the big and I couldn't see
- 36:46if they took that body all right.
- 36:52Well, fellas, let's get into a tally.
- 36:54Appreciate you sharing that with us, but let's get into the hokey
- 36:58defensive dream team and I'm going to tell you this was a
- 37:03pretty hard to do. This was hard like offense.
- 37:06It was like two or three people here and there, man.
- 37:09It felt like I told y'all. It felt like choosing children.
- 37:16I feel like the the last one in, last one out was so much harder
- 37:19with this. Oh my God, so hard.
- 37:21Last one in. We talk about first one in.
- 37:26All. Right.
- 37:28So here's what we got and we love to see you all in the
- 37:30comments with your with your thoughts.
- 37:32So what we're going to do, we've got defensive in pick four.
- 37:37Yeah, we know it's a lot more 4 offensive tackle pick 3,
- 37:44linebacker 4, safety 4 and cornerback 5.
- 37:47So that's what we did. Curtis, go to hell.
- 37:51I wanted to do 3. Coach Robbie's like hell no.
- 37:55I got to have 4. Robbie sent in four and then
- 37:58Shelton sent in four and we're like all right, fuck it.
- 38:00Alex sent in four and then it was just like, OK, everybody
- 38:02just do 4. I'll follow us all later.
- 38:05We all know that Virginia Tech up until this point has
- 38:09traditionally been a four man front.
- 38:11You ain't going to go out there with only six guys for a four
- 38:15man front. You got to have 7:00, you got to
- 38:17have a seven man rotation for A4 front defense, so.
- 38:21Robbie won't. I put it in the defensive end
- 38:23that's. A That's a good sell, Robbie.
- 38:24That's a good sell. If you look real closely at my
- 38:27defensive tackle list, you will be surprised, That's all.
- 38:30All right, well, let's let's kick it off.
- 38:34Get that, get that, get it up. Robbie, give us your 4 defensive
- 38:39ends that will be terrorizing quarterbacks.
- 38:42Well, when it come down to it, there's one obvious pick.
- 38:47There's Bruce Smith. It's it's one that, you know,
- 38:51you can't not have in there for Virginia Tech.
- 38:55He's one of the greatest NFL players of all time.
- 38:58He's one of the greatest players in the history of Virginia Tech
- 39:00football, college football. You have to have it.
- 39:03Yeah. Then after that, I went with
- 39:07Cornell Brown and Darrell Tapp, two guys that I really watched
- 39:13play a lot when I was growing up and, and really keeping up with
- 39:19things. And then I I had to give a
- 39:21little love to the most recent one APR.
- 39:25We had to get him in there again.
- 39:29I could have gone 8-9 easily. I mean, worlds corn, there's so
- 39:38many worlds was probably the first one that I left off Corey
- 39:43Moore, which I think Moore ended up playing more linebacker later
- 39:51as a as a pro player. And there's just so many you can
- 39:55throw out there. But I came with these four.
- 39:59They're going to, they're going to put some sheer error in, in
- 40:02the eyes of a quarterback and of really anybody on that offensive
- 40:06side in front of them. So.
- 40:09All right. Tally you up next two or your 4
- 40:12defensive ends. So for me, it was like Robbie
- 40:17said, I mean, it's hard to make this list without putting Bruce
- 40:21Smith in there. I mean, he's the guy, right?
- 40:24No matter how old or young you are, you know who Bruce Smith
- 40:27is, know what he done. Again, like Robbie said, I put
- 40:31APR in, I put him in first. Everybody.
- 40:34I didn't copy Robbie this time or should APR.
- 40:40I don't think people, I do think the Virginia, Virginia Tech fans
- 40:43know like what he brought to the team.
- 40:46But I think that when you look back over what he done his two
- 40:50years in Blacksburg, maybe. But you know, if we still around
- 40:5310 years from now and you look back at his stats and look at
- 40:56his tape, you'll understand why he's on this list because even
- 41:01though we have mediocre seasons like it.
- 41:03Won't cause of him. To put up the numbers that he
- 41:05put up was kind of ungodly. Corey Moore, Everybody knows
- 41:10what Corey Moore done. Welcome to the Terrordome.
- 41:14That's how I say. And Cornell Brown, Cornell Brown
- 41:18is I put him on just because like he was one of those guys
- 41:22that I feel like pride has to get somebody like him.
- 41:26You know, all world recruit that just changes the program.
- 41:33Those guys, if you got them on your dream team, you got a
- 41:38chance to go up against anybody and kind of what I when we
- 41:42talked about what do you put on a dream team and what do you
- 41:45look for on a dream team? I kind of look at it like if you
- 41:51remove this person from this history, if you remove this
- 41:54person from Virginia Tech history, does it change it?
- 41:58What changes all of these players?
- 42:00I feel like if you're moving from Virginia Tech history, it
- 42:02definitely changes that school. So that's why they're on my
- 42:06list. All right, Brian.
- 42:13You know what? It's not a not a ton different
- 42:15here. Me and Tally are are right in
- 42:19the same ballpark here. And and you said it with Bruce
- 42:21Smith, you can't. This list starts and ends with
- 42:24Bruce Smith. Like, if you don't have Bruce
- 42:26Smith on this list, what the hell are you doing?
- 42:29Bruce Smith didn't know all five of these lists I'm walking out
- 42:34of here. So I mean, that's where it
- 42:37starts. APR is yeah, when we look at I
- 42:44think defense right now, probably it it up there in the
- 42:48conversation for the best transfer defensive player in
- 42:53Virginia Tech history, certainly in that conversation.
- 42:56And when we look at defensive end, just his skill set and what
- 43:00he was able to bring to the table from shifting what the
- 43:04offensive line had to do when we lined up on defense.
- 43:10And then we got, you know, Corey Moore, absolute stud on the
- 43:18arguably the best team in Virginia Tech history.
- 43:20And, you know, between the, you know, national championship
- 43:26media days. And.
- 43:29Welcome to the Terra Dome baby. Like sound bites for days.
- 43:35It's it's a, it's a insane combination of you, you put that
- 43:39in there and you put what, what, what his output was on the
- 43:41field. And like Sally said, Cornell
- 43:43Brown, just a program changing recruit and player.
- 43:49So that that, I mean, that's huge for me.
- 43:51And I know Tally talked about what he sees the dream team.
- 43:54What I see in a dream team is that, you know, we got to take
- 43:56this team. We got to line it up against the
- 43:58Alabama's, the Penn State's. We got to we got to give our
- 44:01best line up, our best rotation. I feel like these are guys are
- 44:05balanced enough at the position where they kind of do do things
- 44:08a little bit differently. There's enough to to give
- 44:11defensive defenses fits, offenses fits with with the way
- 44:16they would attack use as well. So that's where I that's where I
- 44:20am. Curtis, what you got?
- 44:22Well like y'all already said, Bruce Smith was the first name
- 44:27that I wrote down because again, you cannot.
- 44:31You got one wrong there buddy. Just so you know, I do.
- 44:36Yep, you got one wrong for me. Sorry, which one's wrong?
- 44:40I'll tell you in a second, but let me go to Bruce.
- 44:42OK. All right.
- 44:43You cannot tell the history of Virginia Tech, you cannot tell
- 44:46the history of college football for what he did in my 8485.
- 44:49Like I think somebody's went back and it's like 18 or 19 1/2
- 44:53sacks. It wasn't a stat at that point
- 44:55in time. You won the Allen, you won
- 44:57basically every major defensive trophy you can think of.
- 45:00He was the 11. And then he goes and does what
- 45:03he does for 20 plus years in the NFL.
- 45:06My next guy actually, you got 2 wrong for me man.
- 45:10Damn. Damn.
- 45:12Brian, you know what? Damn, Brian, what do you do?
- 45:15I pull my list up here. Corey Moore is second because
- 45:19what he did in both 98 and 99 was unbelievable.
- 45:24And also for defensive line group.
- 45:28Bruce. Bruce is that leader, right?
- 45:30Bruce is the leader. Good guy, good speaker.
- 45:33Don't keep everybody in line. Corey's the dog.
- 45:37Corey, go RIP somebody's head off, right?
- 45:41The next one I got who's not on here is John Engelberger.
- 45:47The pitfalls part of that 99 team, he was on the other side.
- 45:50Why was that damn defensive line so fucking good that year?
- 45:53Because you had two legitimate edge rushers, Engelberger, you
- 45:57could play inside as well and he would eat.
- 46:00He would eat. But he's your quiet guy.
- 46:03You don't hear a lot from John Engelberger.
- 46:05He's the quiet, the silent, deadly one.
- 46:07And then it's Cornell Brown. Cornell Brown, two time all
- 46:11American consensus in 96. He literally was considered the
- 46:16best, one of the best defensive ends in the country that year,
- 46:19first team all American, and he changed the trajectory and it
- 46:24was between him and Darryl Tap and it ripped me.
- 46:27I've interviewed Darryl Tap. I love Darryl Tap as a player.
- 46:31But even though he's had a rival high school, Cornell Brown is a
- 46:35Southside boy from Lynchburg that's close that might not to
- 46:40brethren here. Above and below me played
- 46:42against EC Glass every year. He came from EC Glass and what
- 46:45he did. Saint John, he was off from EC
- 46:48Glass before I got there. But that's not 4.
- 46:52So Bruce Smith, Cornell Brown, Corey Moore, John Engelberger,
- 47:02Right? I hope you got the rest of mine
- 47:03right. My bad, my bad.
- 47:06So I think I know what I did, but that's all right.
- 47:08Once again, it doesn't matter any of these.
- 47:14Let's think I know what I'd be able to get.
- 47:15We're good. Chris Lester with us tonight.
- 47:19What's going on, Chris again? Christopher Lester in the House.
- 47:25Chris Lester in the house, So Sheldon with Bruce, Corey APR
- 47:29and Daryl Tapp again. I I think this room there are
- 47:33people like y'all said Jason Wells, Remember Nico's Brown, I
- 47:39mean Kenneth Keenum had like 10 1/2 sacks one year.
- 47:41There were so many people. That was my next question.
- 47:45Yeah, that was my next question I was going to ask you.
- 47:47What's that? If you had to pick just one
- 47:51player not on this list, they don't have to be a all world
- 47:55person, just somebody that you enjoyed watching it play.
- 47:58Defensive end. That's not anywhere on this
- 48:01list. What name would you pick?
- 48:03Not anywhere on this list. Yeah.
- 48:05So nobody, nobody's got them on any of their list.
- 48:08Like I said, just a defensive end from Virginia Tech that you
- 48:11enjoy watching play. World.
- 48:16Not Chris Ellis. Chris Ellis.
- 48:18We didn't mention Chris Ellis. Chris Ellis.
- 48:21You said mine. I was going to say Kenny Cannon.
- 48:23Kenny and Cannon. Yeah.
- 48:25Robbie, you said worlds, Brian. I'm gonna go worlds.
- 48:31Yeah, I'm gonna go worlds. Worlds.
- 48:33I just, I remember the Kenny Cannon story of him, you know,
- 48:37going to gonna go to Notre Dame and whatever happens, he tears
- 48:41his ACL. They don't recruit him.
- 48:42Then he goes and plays them and you could tell he wanted to beat
- 48:46them. That's all I'll say.
- 48:47So just stories like that, it's things that make you love
- 48:52college football. Again, this is this is one of
- 48:55those things where I we could I could have made 10 Yeah,
- 48:59absolutely fine with but. We, we got to do 4 all right?
- 49:06Oh, oh, yeah. I mean, he might have caused
- 49:09absolute chaos in 2018, but he'll.
- 49:12He was a fucking. Dog man, Yeah, God, he was a dog
- 49:15all. Right.
- 49:17Let's flip it. I'm going to leave the next and
- 49:19we're going to go to defensive tackle.
- 49:21Ron, I hope you got this one right for me.
- 49:25And so defensive tackle, it starts with Tim.
- 49:28Settle that. Yep, you got it wrong for me.
- 49:32You got mine all fucked up man. Hope you got tallies right you.
- 49:41Go ahead, you go ahead and read. I'm going to fix it.
- 49:43I think what you did is you looked at Robbie's list and I
- 49:46think you copied to mine because mine was first.
- 49:49But Tim, settle big Timmy. I mean, what 64325 strong could
- 49:57could could clog the middle, but Lord have mercy.
- 49:59That first step for a 320 LB man is still sick.
- 50:02He's still in the league because of it, right next I got mine is
- 50:06amnesias peoples. I love the way he played last
- 50:09year. Absolutely love the way he
- 50:11played a lot of dog, a lot of fight and, and, and as much as
- 50:17we like him for his pass rushing technique, he was actually a
- 50:21really good run stopping guy the way he shot the gaps and
- 50:24basically made running backs move.
- 50:27Now my third one is the man who taught people's original member
- 50:32of the death row crew back in 95, JC Price.
- 50:37Man, we've had a chance to interview and I mean, he was
- 50:43that stalwart on that line. People ask why is our defense
- 50:47line playing so good? Why they mean, why they play
- 50:49hard, why they play like dogs him.
- 50:52And if you tell me he gets to lead people's, we already saw
- 50:56what he took. He took people's game to the
- 50:57next level. Got that kid drafted by the
- 50:59Ravens, which means he's going to be good for like a decade
- 51:02because that's what they do with defensive lineman.
- 51:04And if you tell me, I can get JC Price, no disrespect, Charlie
- 51:08Wilde, Charlie Wilde's good coach.
- 51:10If you let me get the mentality of JC Price and Tim settle it,
- 51:15it all sorts of bad shit's going to happen in the backfield.
- 51:18That's mine, Ron, who you got? Who do I got?
- 51:25I've got the exact same thing you got at least on this this
- 51:29page. I've got Tim Settle.
- 51:32Tim Settle was a guy that came in highly, highly touted recruit
- 51:38and came to work every day and did everything that you asked to
- 51:41do and then did a little bit more.
- 51:44And I think he he even in some ways overachieved his his
- 51:49recruit ranking in his time in Blacksburg tone setter on one of
- 51:55the best defenses we've seen. Definitely the best defense in
- 52:00the the the post Beamer era and that that's about all you can
- 52:07say, man. And Engelberger, absolute dog.
- 52:12Curtis, you already talked about a defensive end could play
- 52:14defensive, defensive end could play D tackle.
- 52:17I've got him in here at D tackle.
- 52:19I always hear first name that comes up when when Dwight's on
- 52:24here with us about who he hated to go against in practice.
- 52:29John Engelberger right there, man.
- 52:32And JC Price. I mean, I don't think there's a
- 52:34whole lot else that could be said about him.
- 52:36Absolute dog, absolute tone setter and for what he's done,
- 52:41what he did at Virginia Tech, what he what he did after you
- 52:44left Virginia Tech and what he's what he's done since he's came
- 52:46back to Virginia Tech, you got to put him on this list all.
- 52:50Right, Robbie? You ain't going to see nothing
- 52:54different right here in my list. It's the same 3 settle.
- 53:02I mean, it says it for himself, man.
- 53:04I mean he, he was dominant inside the whole time he was
- 53:07there. He just had, I mean, he, he, he
- 53:12set a tone inside you. You just decided right from the
- 53:17beginning when you looked out there and it's all settled, like
- 53:20we're not going to run right there for a while.
- 53:23And then you, you slide, you slide Engelberger in and you
- 53:27Aaron with JC Price. You can put anybody out there at
- 53:31the edge. Those four are going to dominate
- 53:34up front and to be able to rotate three guys like that and
- 53:39then you can do other things and you can play two of them and
- 53:42slide Engelberger out if you need to.
- 53:45And it's just a, it's a nasty rotation with A7 man rotation up
- 53:50front with those 4 defensive ends and these three tackles.
- 53:53And that's just yeah, that's my whole thought.
- 53:57Much more of a coaching process in my mind.
- 54:00I was like with these three and and the defensive ends, I can
- 54:04play all day because I can move some guys in, move some guys out
- 54:08and do anything I need to do. Jonathan Keller.
- 54:15So yeah, my list is Tim Settle, Aneas people's, JC Price mainly
- 54:22for what everybody said. Again, I go to talk about like
- 54:27Aneas people's because of the season, some people may not
- 54:31respect what he done. You know, this year, I think
- 54:36most people know he did a good job and he's going to the
- 54:39league. But when you go back and you
- 54:41look at some of the things he was able to do on this defense
- 54:45five years from now, you're going to be like, man, we really
- 54:48missed that guy. You know what I'm saying?
- 54:50So loved watching him play. Tim Settle is just like you said
- 54:55a mountain of a man and clogging up the middle of DNJC with his
- 55:00demeanor and his his his motor always was fun to watch.
- 55:06All right, and let's take a look at Shelton's real quick.
- 55:12Right there with you and. He's right there with us.
- 55:15So absolutely. So again, not much to be said.
- 55:19There were still other defensive tackles and I mean, I love
- 55:23Levar, the Lewis brothers, early 2000s Jonathan and Kevin with
- 55:29Mr. Hopkins brothers, especially Derek Derek 511 three O 5.
- 55:34You kind of wonder how people moved him that low center of
- 55:37gravity and. You know, name that's there that
- 55:41I love to watch play what what year it was.
- 55:45I can't even remember what year that Woody Baird.
- 55:48I love watching Woody Baird. Yeah.
- 55:51Aired up at defensive tackle, kind of undersized, you know,
- 55:56had that what they call quick twitch could just get into
- 56:00spaces and create chaos. So not quite on my dream team,
- 56:05but definitely a player that I loved watching.
- 56:07Woody Barry. Another one from the early
- 56:112000s, David Pugh. We all remember Jim Davis.
- 56:14I remember Jim Davis. Defensive tackle, kind of a
- 56:18tweener. Played both that and played the
- 56:20Fortec again. We're still missing people.
- 56:24I know. Oh yeah, it's the crazy.
- 56:26Part Who was the guy I was going to throw out there?
- 56:28So I'm glad somebody else threw him out there.
- 56:31But I've seen several people in the chat talk about Maddie.
- 56:34I'm going to say Andre, said Maddie Luther.
- 56:37That's another. That's another great choice.
- 56:40Yeah. Unbelievable.
- 56:42All right, we could be here all night.
- 56:43All right, let's go next linebacker room.
- 56:47Jonathan Talik on. Lead us off with the
- 56:49linebackers. This was probably the hardest 1
- 56:53for me just because it was so many names that popped up.
- 56:58But the names that I went with was ex Xavier DB, Vince Hall,
- 57:04Bruce Taylor and I did go back and switch it.
- 57:07Brian didn't switch it but that's OK.
- 57:09I said James Anderson, but I took James Anderson off and had
- 57:14to put Maine Edmonds on there just because I, I, I know Carrie
- 57:22Anne Johnson a little bit. I sold him, him and his family
- 57:24cars running back from Auburn that went in the draft with,
- 57:29with the same year that the Edmonds brothers went.
- 57:32And he came back to buy a car after he had went to like his
- 57:36combine and pre draft workouts and stuff like that.
- 57:39And he was like, man, it's two brothers that go to Virginia
- 57:42Tech and the younger brother is a freak.
- 57:45Like, he is the biggest person and the fastest person I've ever
- 57:49seen. This is coming from an SEC
- 57:52running back, Jermaine. And he showed me some pictures
- 57:56of him. And Jermaine Edmonds is just a
- 57:59monster of a man, like 65, almost 66, you know, 250 can
- 58:07move the way that he moves, can run the way that he runs.
- 58:10Like, why can't we get no linebackers like that?
- 58:13What linebackers there? Send them to Virginia Tech.
- 58:16That's what we need. All three of those brothers
- 58:20were, were big, yeah, but they they were, you know, I coaching
- 58:26in Virginia at our old high school, you know, we, we had
- 58:30some run insurance at Old Damn River, some scrimmages and some
- 58:33things like that. All three of them brothers were
- 58:36were something to behold in high school.
- 58:38Now I'm going to tell you what. Yeah, seeing, seeing Tremaine in
- 58:43person and then watching dude move like that.
- 58:46Oh my. God.
- 58:47In the game is crazy. I mean, similar similar to what
- 58:51you you know, what you experience when you see Cam
- 58:53chancellor in person and then and then watch it on the field.
- 58:57I mean, it's it's it's different.
- 58:58It's a it's a different type of speed seeing someone that size
- 59:02moving that fast. But yeah, who?
- 59:07Who's next, Curtis? I'm next.
- 59:10Let's see if you got this one right.
- 59:12So he don't all man tally giving you shit man no fan.
- 59:19So mine starts out with Ben Taylor.
- 59:23He was on the Mount Rushmore for me years ago.
- 59:25Ben Taylor, the perfect middle linebacker for what we ran, the
- 59:31perfect middle linebacker, the perfect outside weak side
- 59:35linebacker, whatever you want to call him, Xavier DB.
- 59:40I was at that stadium, the Georgia Tech game.
- 59:44He picked that ball off and went elsewhere.
- 59:47I was hammered, but I remember it happening because it went
- 59:49right by me on the sideline. The athleticism he brought in
- 59:56his size. You tell me right now we could
- 1:00:01find another Xavier DB and put on the field.
- 1:00:03He would be dominant today as he was back then.
- 1:00:07My 2:00 at the bottom are a little bit of throwbacks first
- 1:00:09of all. Can't remember the exact how it
- 1:00:12went, but that Del Rico story from Dwight Victoria couple
- 1:00:16years ago that has stuck with me.
- 1:00:18I want somebody that crazy, that doggish on the field at some
- 1:00:24point in time. But when he tells the story
- 1:00:26about Del Rico, let's talk about the UVA game in 95.
- 1:00:29Y'all go find the episode. I mean it made me laugh.
- 1:00:32It's like and and he had 130 and 120 tackles the years he started
- 1:00:37at Michael linebacker. Last one is a name you don't
- 1:00:40hear a lot of, but this is a guy let the team in tackles in 98
- 1:00:43and 99. And Jameel Smith was effectively
- 1:00:48the first prototypical backer. He was effectively the guy that
- 1:00:54we were looking for and he beset X, you know, about six years
- 1:00:58later. So it's a name some people
- 1:01:01forget to mention, but do not forget Jameel Smith, currently
- 1:01:05coaching down at Coastal Carolina.
- 1:01:07So that is my four and I put them on the field against
- 1:01:13anybody, Robbie. Well, then we we definitely got
- 1:01:22a lot of different names in this crowd, but linebacker I went
- 1:01:28with of course, Xavier DB, Vince Hall, the two guys I watched a
- 1:01:33lot as a coach when I first started out coaching, teaching
- 1:01:39linebackers, watching those two guys on the field together, I
- 1:01:44put Andrew Matua Puaca may not be a name that a lot of people
- 1:01:50recognize a lot of times, but he was a tackling machine and Bud
- 1:01:56Foster absolutely loved him. He, he had a, he's got a little
- 1:02:02bit more of a special place with me.
- 1:02:04My wife, as some of these guys know, as an athletic trainer,
- 1:02:08she used to work for Salem High School in Virginia Beach and he
- 1:02:12was a linebacker there. So as a, as a younger coach, I
- 1:02:16got to watch him play in high school all the way into college.
- 1:02:20And I love the way he played the game.
- 1:02:22I love the way he went after things.
- 1:02:24So I had put him in my team right there.
- 1:02:27And the last one is Rick Rosano. Has anybody ever looked at
- 1:02:34linebacker stats from Virginia Tech?
- 1:02:40Not officially. Not really I.
- 1:02:41Tackle Sax, what we talking? About I have I have one right
- 1:02:45here. There are two different times in
- 1:02:47the record books of Virginia Tech in 1970, 1977, he had 30
- 1:03:00tackles in the game. He recorded 177 tackles in a
- 1:03:05season. He put up those ODU linebacker
- 1:03:09numbers. Yeah, he had 634 career tackles
- 1:03:15from 74 to 77. I could.
- 1:03:19You could put his picture in a lineup.
- 1:03:21I couldn't tell you who he was, but if I'm finding stats like
- 1:03:25that, I'm putting that man on my list that is a tackle machine.
- 1:03:28He probably need to be on the 30 tackles in one game. 30 tackles
- 1:03:32in one game. Oh, in a game in 1975 against
- 1:03:37the Richmond Spiders, he had 21 unassisted tackles.
- 1:03:41Jesus. Christ.
- 1:03:42Yeah, put him on. Put him on the field for me.
- 1:03:45I don't know who he is. Put him on the field for me
- 1:03:48because I wasn't alive in 1974. I'm going to take that every
- 1:03:53time. 21. I know that man can't.
- 1:03:57Walk his His son backed up Mike Alstott in in Tampa bank.
- 1:04:02If he if he had 30 tackles in one game and 21 in another one.
- 1:04:06I know that man can't walk or talk right now.
- 1:04:09I know he got a Parkinson's disease and his his knees is
- 1:04:12hurting. God bless him if he if he alive
- 1:04:15or dead, I don't know, but I'm just saying it.
- 1:04:17He probably pretty well if you tackle it like that.
- 1:04:20In 77 they had leather helmets. Yeah, well, I don't know if they
- 1:04:26had leather helmets in 77, but. That seemed like a long time
- 1:04:29ago. I was born in 85 so that was
- 1:04:31good before my time. They they didn't wear face masks
- 1:04:34back then in 70. 730 tackles again.
- 1:04:36Yeah, they did shut up dally, they're saying.
- 1:04:42Oh, man, yeah, he's still living.
- 1:04:44He's still living out there. We're here.
- 1:04:46We need to get him on coaching staff.
- 1:04:47Yeah, no. Kidding.
- 1:04:51We played in the 70s, he probably like 70 now.
- 1:04:55Good math I think 7769. Sorry, 69. 69.
- 1:05:02Yeah, that, that's where I went with it there.
- 1:05:04There's plenty other linebackers that could have put in there.
- 1:05:09You know, I, I, yeah, Nice. So many more.
- 1:05:19What you got? Shout out.
- 1:05:21I love it. I'm glad Andrey's in the chat
- 1:05:23tonight. You know what I'm I'm, I'm going
- 1:05:25to keep it simple here. I got ADB.
- 1:05:29Obvious reasons made made 11 the best looking number in Virginia
- 1:05:34Tech history. Arguably Vince Hall, the running
- 1:05:40mate with the DB. You can't really talk about 1
- 1:05:43without the other. And definitely the most
- 1:05:44dominating combination of linebackers in Virginia Tech
- 1:05:48history. Ben Taylor, much like Curtis
- 1:05:52said, like the prototypical Mike linebacker, the guy you want in
- 1:05:57the middle, the guy you want calling everything out, the guy
- 1:05:59you want making the tackle. And then just Tremaine Evans.
- 1:06:03The the combination of athleticism and production is
- 1:06:09you can't overlook it. And he was arguably the best
- 1:06:13player on, like I said, the best defense we've had in the last,
- 1:06:16you know, almost 20 years, so. Yeah, Did we have did we get the
- 1:06:21picture with him? Yeah, we we got to let me try to
- 1:06:25find that and see if we can put it in a chat because we are
- 1:06:28being very serious. Like people like, oh, he's like
- 1:06:316/4. No, when you stand next to him,
- 1:06:34holy shit, Do you feel small? That's what I can find it.
- 1:06:38Brian. I Who's Shelton got?
- 1:06:42Sheldon's riding with Vince Hall, DB Bruce Taylor and he
- 1:06:45peacely Cornell Brown, and it's the linebacker.
- 1:06:48Sneaky, sneaky because Cornell played outside linebacker, but
- 1:06:51the Ravens look at him being sneaky, getting his getting his
- 1:06:54extra defensive in there a. Little funny story for you with
- 1:06:57the, with the Xavier DB and Vince Hall.
- 1:07:01I ain't going, I ain't going to throw my man under the bus or
- 1:07:03anything. But I, I know a, a wide receiver
- 1:07:07that played at Virginia Tech and he went out in his very first
- 1:07:12spring game and they had him run a, a drag route or, or a right
- 1:07:20into the linebackers in the spring game.
- 1:07:23And Vince Hall and Xavier DB played, played pinball with his
- 1:07:29rear end in in the middle there. And they helped him up, told him
- 1:07:33to say, hey, don't come back in the middle again.
- 1:07:37Playing later. He he they called the same play.
- 1:07:40He run back across the middle again and they smacked him
- 1:07:43around a little bit later in the game when they called that that
- 1:07:47dig across the middle of the third time he got benched
- 1:07:50because he ran the other route. He said, I won't go on back in
- 1:07:52there again. They just told me twice enough
- 1:07:54to come in there. I won't go on back.
- 1:07:57Well, keep doing this to me. Yeah, he did.
- 1:08:00He he pissed some coach off at practice.
- 1:08:02He. Called another play.
- 1:08:05Yeah, you can call what you want to.
- 1:08:06You won't be going in there. You're going to have to look for
- 1:08:09me to go somewhere else because I ain't going back in there
- 1:08:11again. And it told me twice I ain't
- 1:08:13doing this the third time. Right.
- 1:08:18All righty, we got a couple more rooms to go here.
- 1:08:22Brian, you are leading off the safety room.
- 1:08:25Not the hardest shit want to do. This was hard this to, to me,
- 1:08:32this was the easiest one and the hardest one.
- 1:08:35I, I feel like the, the, the first one, Willie Pyle is the
- 1:08:39easy one. I, I feel like that's the going
- 1:08:42to be the most consensus thing you're going to see on this
- 1:08:45list. You might throw Torian in there
- 1:08:46as well. Who's my #2?
- 1:08:47But Willie Pyle is the safety of Virginia Tech defense Tori and
- 1:08:56Gray. I mean, you look, you look at
- 1:08:57what he was able to do not only from a production standpoint,
- 1:09:01versatile, but also, you know, what he was able to do, You
- 1:09:05know, later coming back coaching here, obviously still doing his
- 1:09:08thing. We won't say where he's doing
- 1:09:12his thing because we don't talk about that team that that whole
- 1:09:14lot right now. But and, and here's where it got
- 1:09:19difficult because I was, I was a lot of different directions you
- 1:09:22could go after that. And I went with a little bit of
- 1:09:27new blood with Chuck Clark and a little bit of old blood with
- 1:09:31Frank, Frank Lauria. So that's that's where I'm at.
- 1:09:37You know, I feel like if if you had to really put a line about
- 1:09:41there, and that's kind of what I'm trying to do.
- 1:09:43I get a little bit of a lot of different things with with
- 1:09:45these, with this grouping at the safety position.
- 1:09:47All right, you got to meet you guys here.
- 1:09:52Well, I got a couple of agrees with you, couple a little bit
- 1:09:55different. I absolutely agree.
- 1:10:00Willie Powell is probably going to be on this list for everybody
- 1:10:05hands down. Willie as good, as many good
- 1:10:09safeties as we had. It was like 3 years of
- 1:10:13consistent play, the last two all American.
- 1:10:16Willie was that good. Now, the one at the top there, I
- 1:10:20got sneaky because everybody's going to probably come in a
- 1:10:23thing and say, well, Cody technically played whip
- 1:10:27linebacker. Whip linebacker was a damn
- 1:10:29strong safety just playing close to the line.
- 1:10:31It was the first hybrid position probably known to college
- 1:10:34football. Cody Grimm was a safety in all
- 1:10:38aspects, and he was a damn good safety and he was a damn good
- 1:10:42whip linebacker. So I'm going to put him in
- 1:10:43safety, give me a little flexibility with the linebacker
- 1:10:46room there when I got to go with it.
- 1:10:48And then Pearson was one of those original DBU guys back in
- 1:10:53the early 90s and really good player, 14 years in the NFL
- 1:10:59coaching now with us. And then Chuck Clark, Chuck
- 1:11:04Clark was one of those guys, you know, tally you, you mentioned
- 1:11:06earlier, I like watching Chuck Clark play.
- 1:11:09He was going to hit you hard. He could do a little bit of
- 1:11:12everything you asked him go cover a man.
- 1:11:14He could go cover man plays on, go lay a lick on somebody.
- 1:11:18So that's mine. Got the Cody Grimm curveball
- 1:11:23there. Oh, I'll, I'll look at.
- 1:11:25Lavar, look at Lavar look at Lavar.
- 1:11:28Get the six corner in there. 6 corner in there putting Jimmy
- 1:11:31in. Yeah Jimmy can play safety.
- 1:11:34Big big ass some. Yeah, you did play some safety.
- 1:11:37He did. All right, listen, I'm I'm going
- 1:11:40to go ahead and put Josh's up here for we we move it over to
- 1:11:43Tally because this one was close and this one was close to simply
- 1:11:48the hit and pit when he knocked the fucking piss out of Tyler
- 1:11:52Boyd clean, clean. There you did.
- 1:11:58Tally who you who you got up here, big guy.
- 1:12:02So on mine, I got, like you said, Willie, you got to have
- 1:12:07Willie on. Now, Cody Graham, I think, like
- 1:12:11Andretti said, he played good at at Temple 2.
- 1:12:15Frank, I think Brian copied me y'all, because I put Frank
- 1:12:19first. But I'm just saying also because
- 1:12:23if you don't know, if you look at it again, I think he played
- 1:12:26in like 66 and 67 All American both years.
- 1:12:30But he ended up going to coach at Marshall and he was on the
- 1:12:35coaching staff when the when the plane crashed and they lost the
- 1:12:38team. So just the story.
- 1:12:40He's one of the only players to have his number retired, things
- 1:12:43like that. The number 10, I think it is
- 1:12:45just for nostalgia reasons, but what he did on the field as well
- 1:12:49puts him on this list. But also just being, you know, a
- 1:12:54good human and and a great football player.
- 1:12:56Then Cam Chancellor, it was a lot of names that I feel like I
- 1:13:00could have put on instead of Cam just because of what they
- 1:13:04actually did at Virginia Tech. Think we've seen Cam blossom a
- 1:13:08little bit more after his time at Virginia Tech, but the
- 1:13:13potential was there is how he got on my list here.
- 1:13:16Because Cam could just hit, you know?
- 1:13:19And I feel like if we put a dream team together and we had
- 1:13:22all these other people that's flowing around him and you can
- 1:13:26tell him just to go hit like he did with the Seahawks, I don't
- 1:13:31think too many people want to come across the middle.
- 1:13:35Not at all. Not at all.
- 1:13:38Robbie who you got? Well, a lot of same names we've
- 1:13:44already seen. Obviously Cam Chancellor I have
- 1:13:48in there and I didn't put these in any specific order, just name
- 1:13:52them as one as I could. Obviously Willie Powell in my
- 1:13:56mind is probably the first guy that comes to my mind as a
- 1:14:01safety. After that, to me, it was
- 1:14:04Pearson Prelude. I just Remember Remember
- 1:14:07watching both of those guys play and how they just kind of took
- 1:14:11control and and LED everything. And then Tori and Gray, I
- 1:14:17remember him a little more as a coach then as a player, but I
- 1:14:23know he was he was a player there.
- 1:14:26If all else fails, we at least got 2 coaches that can guide
- 1:14:29everybody else in there and keep things going.
- 1:14:33I. I felt like that was that was a
- 1:14:37good safety room to get going again.
- 1:14:41Plenty of names if you could have went back through and move
- 1:14:44people in and out and done some great things.
- 1:14:47But that that's the route I went with with four guys that I could
- 1:14:53definitely count on going down and hitting somebody and and
- 1:14:56leading the secondary and helping guide everything we need
- 1:14:59to on that field. 100% let's throw Shelton's up there real
- 1:15:04quick. Yeah, and I'm going to make a
- 1:15:06point as we put Shelton got the little curveball with the with
- 1:15:11Terrell Edmonds. Terrell Edmonds very good
- 1:15:14safety, So no hate on that, but I'm going to make a point about
- 1:15:19tally what you saw about Cam Blossom and once he got to
- 1:15:23Seattle, because everybody knows the story, right?
- 1:15:26Cam start played four years. He did not red shirt.
- 1:15:31He started out as a cornerback. They moved him to Rover in 2007
- 1:15:36where he started as a sophomore. First of all, Rover sophomore.
- 1:15:39You didn't do that shit. He had 80 tackles that year as a
- 1:15:45sophomore. His last two seasons he played
- 1:15:48at free safety. He played out of position his
- 1:15:50last two years in O8, no nines, free safety.
- 1:15:54And so that the truth is that then that's the story to be told
- 1:15:57is what if you had a true free safety and he got to play Rover,
- 1:16:01play that strong safety like he did in the NFL those last two
- 1:16:04years when he got bigger and he got stronger, He wouldn't win in
- 1:16:08a sixth round. He would not have went late in
- 1:16:11the draft. He would have been like the
- 1:16:13first safety off the board. Yeah, and and he was my first
- 1:16:16theme out of out of There along with Kashawn Jarrett like that.
- 1:16:19Those were the 2 that I was like who you putting in?
- 1:16:22Who you putting in? Well, I can't remember the
- 1:16:25safety. I can't remember the safety that
- 1:16:26was from UUSC, the big safety they had way back when, probably
- 1:16:33a couple years. Taylor Mays.
- 1:16:36That's him. Taylor Mays.
- 1:16:37Taylor. Mays Cam was who people thought
- 1:16:39Taylor Mays was, yeah. Exactly that is a great way to
- 1:16:43put it there we go great way to put it all right y'all know we
- 1:16:47had to save this last the best for last Safety was already a
- 1:16:51pain in the ass. Cornerback was jeez.
- 1:16:55I mean this is the one I I kid not.
- 1:16:58This was like picking children right here.
- 1:17:01This was just like who you leaving off because you're going
- 1:17:03to leave somebody off you love and tell you to tell us first
- 1:17:07who you got because what children are you disappointing?
- 1:17:11I want to put all of them on there, but D Hall, Jimmy
- 1:17:15Williams, Kyle Fuller, Flowers and Macho Harris, that would be
- 1:17:23my 5 that I'm putting on there. Just that.
- 1:17:27I mean, all of these guys, any name that you see pop up on
- 1:17:31here, it's like it's no story that really has to be told with
- 1:17:36it. It's just, you know, that they
- 1:17:38belong, own a list, even if it's not your list, they belong to a
- 1:17:43list. But out of these people, for me,
- 1:17:46it's like, I just remember plays and things.
- 1:17:51Kyle Fuller playing against Georgia Tech was always like a
- 1:17:54madman. Seemed like every year he played
- 1:17:57against Georgia Tech and they moved him around to different
- 1:18:00position, he was jumping over the line.
- 1:18:03He was, he was just epitomized what Virginia Tech football was,
- 1:18:08you know, to me to watch him play, the years that I watched
- 1:18:11him play and you know, I know we go have other people coming on
- 1:18:15and say some things. I see some people putting in the
- 1:18:17chat, but it's so many names. I guess the first name that I
- 1:18:20left off that I really wanted all was J Ron Hosley.
- 1:18:24Like I used to love to watch him play, but I just didn't have
- 1:18:28room to slide it on above anybody that I have.
- 1:18:34Couldn't do it. Couldn't do it.
- 1:18:37All right, who's up next? Robbie?
- 1:18:38Probably going to be in a lot like go ahead.
- 1:18:42Yeah, we got a DeAngelo. Hall Next.
- 1:18:45It's me. It's me up next.
- 1:18:47Oh. You up next.
- 1:18:49Oh yeah, yeah, it's Brian. Next, baby.
- 1:18:52You good? You good?
- 1:18:54Hey, hey, we're good. We're good it.
- 1:18:56Ain't going to be a lot different.
- 1:18:58I mean mine is not different at all.
- 1:19:01I put them in a different order. Right.
- 1:19:08So, Curtis, you can back me up on this.
- 1:19:10When we, we went to the the tailgate tour.
- 1:19:17Yeah. And we talked to Bud Foster.
- 1:19:20Yep. And we talked about Boundary
- 1:19:22Corner. Who was he talking about?
- 1:19:28Be flowers. Jimmy Williams, Baby Jimmy.
- 1:19:30Williams, I'll see flowers. You see what's on my G, said.
- 1:19:33Jimmy was kind of the the start there and Flowers took it home.
- 1:19:38Flowers became the prototype. But I feel like, I feel like
- 1:19:42those two, those two guys were the cornerstone of what what
- 1:19:49that position became, what cornerback was all about, what
- 1:19:52DB was all about. Obviously you had D Hall.
- 1:19:55Just a absolute freak of an athlete across the board.
- 1:20:01It was really, really impressive to see what he was able to do
- 1:20:05with his career as well. I think he really, he got to the
- 1:20:08NFL, but short a little bit and became just one hell of a player
- 1:20:12over the over the course of his career.
- 1:20:16Then we got, I mean, Macho. Macho was my guy, man.
- 1:20:19Macho was probably my favorite personal favorite Virginia Tech
- 1:20:23cornerback just I mean, played hard nosed, played with a chip
- 1:20:33on his shoulder, brought the energy, brought the juice, but
- 1:20:39also produced and and was just as versatile, at least in the
- 1:20:44same ballpark as D Hall from an athletic standpoint.
- 1:20:48And you know, Kyle Fuller, I mean, we talked about looking at
- 1:20:51kind of the post great years of Virginia Tech, the post 2010
- 1:20:56years of Virginia Tech, Kyle Fuller I think stands out as the
- 1:21:01the best cornerback from a full career standpoint to play in
- 1:21:06that period. I.
- 1:21:10Hear you all right, Robbie? Robbie.
- 1:21:14Because you yawn and I'm probably moving faster.
- 1:21:16I'm struggling right now again. At that list you got D Angelo
- 1:21:22Hall. The I toyed around.
- 1:21:27I was, I was messing with Curtis and Brown.
- 1:21:29We were talking about this earlier in the week.
- 1:21:31This is where I was just going to put where we got Five
- 1:21:34Corners. I was just going to put Fuller's
- 1:21:37and just leave it at that. We were just going to count all
- 1:21:40of them in one. Sometimes you look at them, you
- 1:21:43can't hardly tell them apart anyway, especially when they
- 1:21:46were playing the game. They played so much the same
- 1:21:49way, of course, Brandon Flowers and Jimmy Williams, that shut
- 1:21:55down Boundary Corner, you know in your face.
- 1:21:59And I got his name on the board for you talent, so you don't
- 1:22:02have to worry about it. We went with J Ron Hosley.
- 1:22:05There we go. Again, we we cut, we cut some
- 1:22:09really good names off of this list with to make it to 5
- 1:22:14because I don't think anybody's complete the pass on this crowd.
- 1:22:16There's another. The other rock Carmichael God.
- 1:22:22All right, I'll, I'll put mine up here.
- 1:22:26This was again like this was, you know, the children.
- 1:22:31So D Hall again, if you could have just had somebody like
- 1:22:38Brandon Flowers or Tyrone Drakeford in that room in 2003,
- 1:22:42it ain't nail Ike Charlton. Shit, Lavar, go another one up
- 1:22:45on there man. We're with like 15 now, 16.
- 1:22:51Yeah, we had like 26. I mean, but D Hall, that's for
- 1:22:57you, Josh. D Hall, I got to see him play in
- 1:23:01O3 against UCF. It was my first game ever in
- 1:23:04Lane Stadium and he played every side of the ball.
- 1:23:07That was you. They toyed with him on offense.
- 1:23:10He is probably the second most incredible athlete to ever walk
- 1:23:14through the doors. Athlete, just athlete straight
- 1:23:17up. Kyle Fuller.
- 1:23:19Tally out what you love, what you said, you need a nickel
- 1:23:22corner, It's Kyle Fuller because that man can cover the inside
- 1:23:26slot and you want him to go run support Got a tally 1000%.
- 1:23:29What he did to Georgia Tech those years.
- 1:23:31He wrecked their shot because normally they it was like, oh,
- 1:23:35this cornerback can't tackle now.
- 1:23:37He laid fucking people out and I loved it.
- 1:23:40Brandon Flowers I mean, Brandon was everything you wanted.
- 1:23:44A quarterback he could cover. He picked balls off, but he also
- 1:23:47knocked the living piss out of you if you gave him the chance.
- 1:23:50Macho again. Macho was that five star kid
- 1:23:55down at Highland Springs. It kept that momentum going when
- 1:23:59he came in in 2008. It kept the next 3-4 years
- 1:24:03going. And Tyrone Drakeford, that's old
- 1:24:08school. That's he graduated in 93.
- 1:24:10He got drafted by the 49ers in 94.
- 1:24:13That was about the time I was coming on as a fan of both so he
- 1:24:17stuck with me. He's also I believe second in
- 1:24:21picks. He had a 7th pick season.
- 1:24:23He had like A5 pick season. A real OG DBU Look him up.
- 1:24:29Damn good player, but we are missing so many people here.
- 1:24:33I mean so many. Let's see, did Shelton throw
- 1:24:35anybody we didn't have? Oh, he went with.
- 1:24:39He got Kendall in there. Got the fullers, I told you.
- 1:24:42He threw Kendall in that thing. Anybody know that?
- 1:24:46If you want to do, if you want to have a good time and cry a
- 1:24:49little bit, go pull up Macho Harris on YouTube.
- 1:24:56His his highlights. This man had like 15 picks while
- 1:25:01he was at Virginia Tech. I think it was a two time all
- 1:25:05American and that's like the epitome of what you want in a
- 1:25:11defensive back. Every hit it was some talking.
- 1:25:15It was some kind of animation. If the ball was in there, he was
- 1:25:20going to get it. I think we were playing Clemson
- 1:25:23the one time when he hits the kid in the star kid hits the
- 1:25:28person that the player in the stomach and lays them out and
- 1:25:31just gets up and goes wild. So do yourself a favor, go look
- 1:25:36up if you haven't, go look up Macho Harris and his name was
- 1:25:40Macho. He was wearing #1 like uniforms.
- 1:25:43Look, they were plain, but they were cool.
- 1:25:46They had the little incision in the in the bottom little you
- 1:25:50just the style to man. Alan Spring.
- 1:25:52Baby, can we get back to that? That's all I'm asking.
- 1:25:55Pry, I know you're watching. Can you get us back to some of
- 1:26:00these mindsets of some of these people that we got on this list?
- 1:26:03Anything, you're going to have a full team, but just get us back
- 1:26:07to the mindset. How about he just get people we
- 1:26:12left off get those type guys on here.
- 1:26:15Shit. Oh man, Jim throwing in Ronnell,
- 1:26:20Ronnell Whitaker, Oh my God, we could.
- 1:26:23And that's the thing about doing this and and and why I wanted to
- 1:26:27do it because y'all, we were looking through everything.
- 1:26:30You looking through your old rosters, you just going through
- 1:26:32your memory banks, you going maybe look at a old game or two.
- 1:26:36And and that's what makes it fun.
- 1:26:37It it also makes it hurtful when you write names on the list.
- 1:26:40It's like you, I love Jimmy Williams all but I love Jimmy
- 1:26:43Williams, right? I love.
- 1:26:44Jimmy Williams Hey, let's, let's do, let's do a quick, let's do a
- 1:26:48quick fun fact here. Who?
- 1:26:49Who is the all time leading interceptions?
- 1:26:53Oh, I got that one. He ain't on here.
- 1:26:55But I got it. He ain't on here.
- 1:26:56He ain't on here. Tally who you got.
- 1:26:58Who is it? I don't know.
- 1:27:00Somebody be here. Robbie don't cheat.
- 1:27:04Robbie don't cheat. You cheating.
- 1:27:08You cheating. Robbie looking it up.
- 1:27:09He looking it up, it's Gene Bunn and.
- 1:27:15Who? Exactly.
- 1:27:18Gene Bunn, man. Gene Bunn, who played in the, I
- 1:27:22believe it was the 70s, his number, it's kind of asinine.
- 1:27:26Hold on. Yeah, it's.
- 1:27:28Ridiculous tackles in the game? Asinine.
- 1:27:30No. Yeah, kind of with what he did.
- 1:27:34Hold on. 76 and 5 S 18 total. 18 and three seasons.
- 1:27:44Pretty good watch. It wasn't far behind him.
- 1:27:46Yeah, 15. All of those guys weren't too
- 1:27:51far behind him. Drakeford.
- 1:27:54Was up there, wasn't he? Drakeford is 13.
- 1:27:57Yeah. The great thing is I think all
- 1:28:00five of us could have put five different names and somebody
- 1:28:03still would have been left off. Right. 1000% thousand percent
- 1:28:10Macho is third Willie Powell. Go back to Willie Powell real
- 1:28:14quick. Really.
- 1:28:15Powell's a free safety. 14 picks.
- 1:28:19Yeah, 14 picks. He howls, too, is a free safety.
- 1:28:25I mean. Ball hog baby, that that comedy
- 1:28:28chat right there from Josh Young.
- 1:28:31Yeah, he was a teammate of the of the 30 tackle a game
- 1:28:36linebacker. You could run it or throw it.
- 1:28:41If both of them was on the field at the same time, what you're
- 1:28:43supposed to do? Yeah.
- 1:28:46I'm a punt. I throw another name out y'all
- 1:28:48for safety. We lost him a few years ago.
- 1:28:50Keon Carpenter. Keon Carpenter been play with
- 1:28:54the Bills for so many. Like it's fun to do this.
- 1:28:58Well, it's fun. I'm going to tell you what was
- 1:28:59really fun about it. It's just going and reading and
- 1:29:02looking at the history and thinking about, you know, where
- 1:29:05we once were. And I know it's like it ain't
- 1:29:08the present. But for these, for us, 4 that
- 1:29:13was, that's been our lifetime. Right.
- 1:29:16Right, like we got to see this like this wasn't we had a couple
- 1:29:20guys on here. Maybe we were little or couple
- 1:29:22guys, just you see the lore. But for us like this list right
- 1:29:27here, you take out actually take out nobody.
- 1:29:33We saw every single one of these guys play just about every game
- 1:29:39attack. By the way, I got another one
- 1:29:43just popped in my head. Kendall Fuller is running mate
- 1:29:47Brandon Face on. Yeah, man, Face, face on had
- 1:29:52himself some games. He wasn't quite as consistent
- 1:29:56out there, but when he was on he would he would absolutely
- 1:30:00dominate. But a lot of good corners, man,
- 1:30:05out of good corners when you talk about Virginia Tech
- 1:30:08football, for sure. A lot of good ones.
- 1:30:11All right, We lost Robbie. I don't know why we lost him,
- 1:30:14but we lost him. He sleeps.
- 1:30:16So he probably is man got to be up like 6:00 got to work
- 1:30:20tomorrow, but this has been a lot of fun.
- 1:30:23Y'all want to chat tonight? Y'all have been a lot of fun and
- 1:30:27put yours up, put both dream teams up because like you start
- 1:30:32going and thinking about it, you're going to leave someone
- 1:30:33off and you'll be like how'd I leave them off?
- 1:30:38Well, because we were so good for so long, and that's what we
- 1:30:41got to got to remember. All right.
- 1:30:44Anything else breaking? Ron said we get the recruit
- 1:30:51tomorrow. Ron said we're going to recruit
- 1:30:53tomorrow. I.
- 1:30:55Mean Hey, I've seen the Evan tweets, man, it's coming.
- 1:31:03He's feeling it. He's feeling it coming.
- 1:31:07I told you, I told the guys earlier, it might have been
- 1:31:10later last week that that the kid from Mooresville was coming.
- 1:31:14Yeah. I just had a feeling just by
- 1:31:16hearing some people talk around here where he was going to head
- 1:31:20out to. So hopefully it's going to start
- 1:31:24filling in. I think we're going to, we're
- 1:31:29going to hit a good run here. I think you know we'll.
- 1:31:31See. If that's going to be if that's
- 1:31:33going to put us where we want to be or whether that's something
- 1:31:35that just kind of gets us kind of back to status quo.
- 1:31:39But the the the top ten in the state is starting to run out in
- 1:31:46terms of opportunities. It'd be nice to at least get
- 1:31:48one, maybe 2 in there. We haven't seen that yet.
- 1:31:52So that's kind of where I'm looking.
- 1:31:53If you know, I think we're going to do all right overall, but I'd
- 1:31:57like to see at least grab two of those top ten before the the
- 1:32:02thing. There you go.
- 1:32:03I do like calm you down. Hey, Chris.
- 1:32:06Chris, we, we got one from Green Run.
- 1:32:08Can we get another one please? Get there, Chris, Do your thing.
