- 0:00He is also known by one other name,
- 0:03"Cannibal at the North End of the World."
- 0:06Listen, I want things to be kind of neat and tidy.
- 0:11You got to give it a little pop, but I like that.
- 0:15That's good.
- 0:16"Cannibal at the North End of the World."
- 0:17That's the one.
- 0:18Yeah.
- 0:19It's like be descriptive, but don't be like blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 0:22You know?
- 0:23You can't either, you know, it could mean several different things.
- 0:26Okay.
- 0:27"Cannibal is very clear."
- 0:28This is true.
- 0:29I think, you know, it's eloquent in its brevity.
- 0:33He could be going Nelly Furtado on everyone's ass.
- 0:36Ooh.
- 0:37Hi, Caitlyn.
- 0:39Hi, Cassie.
- 0:40Hi, creepy people.
- 0:42Oh, hi.
- 0:43Hello.
- 0:44Why are you scared, Caitlyn?
- 0:45You don't know what's about to happen.
- 0:46I don't, but you've been building it up for like a week.
- 0:51I mean, at least.
- 0:54Spooky season is technically over, but it never ends.
- 1:00It never ends here.
- 1:03Not on PNW Haunts and Homicides where we chat about true crime, the paranormal and all things
- 1:08spooky in the Pacific Northwest.
- 1:10That's right.
- 1:11The limit does not exist.
- 1:14Or the PNW if you're nasty.
- 1:17She got it in there.
- 1:20What we had to because this episode is fucking nasty.
- 1:23Oh, okay.
- 1:24Well, nasty.
- 1:25Nice day.
- 1:26All right.
- 1:27So now I feel like I'm maybe getting a sense of things.
- 1:32Do we say the thing about the tarot?
- 1:34Because we do a tarot reading in every episode for a little bit of deeper insight into our topic.
- 1:40I wonder what we're going to get for this one.
- 1:43It's so.
- 1:44I'm so interested.
- 1:46Yeah, I really like to know what tarot deck you're planning to use.
- 1:50Oh, well, I could give you a little spoiler and show you which one I'm going to use.
- 1:56The program.
- 1:57Excellent.
- 1:58Well, let's just get it into it.
- 2:02Okay.
- 2:03We're going to do one of Caitlyn's No No Topics today.
- 2:07Great.
- 2:08I was hoping you would say that.
- 2:11And I'm going to start with a simuliric from a song from the Hamat’sa ceremony, which I'll explain
- 2:19what that is.
- 2:20If you don't know what that is in a little bit too.
- 2:22All right.
- 2:23I went all around the world to find some food.
- 2:26I don't know the beat you guys.
- 2:28So it's just I'm just reading it.
- 2:30Okay.
- 2:31Okay, that's fair.
- 2:32I could do it.
- 2:33I could try to do it like a rapper.
- 2:34I went all around the world to find some food.
- 2:36No, okay.
- 2:37I don't think he should do that.
- 2:40Okay.
- 2:41Please.
- 2:42I went all around the world to find some food.
- 2:45I went all around the world to find human flesh.
- 2:48No.
- 2:49I went all around the world to find human heads.
- 2:54I went all around the world to find corpses.
- 3:00But imagine like not in English.
- 3:04Yeah.
- 3:05It probably sounds really, really cool and beautiful.
- 3:08So yeah.
- 3:09Yeah.
- 3:10I'm glad you sang it in English so that I wasn't like accidentally like boffin like.
- 3:17Right.
- 3:18Yeah.
- 3:19Well, I probably couldn't pronounce any of the words because it was really hard.
- 3:23It was hard to find how to pronounce these words that I have to say anyway.
- 3:28So we're not going to be speaking a different language.
- 3:31Okay.
- 3:32All right.
- 3:33The most terrifying story in the Kwakwaka’wakw folklore is of Baxbakwalanuksiwe’.
- 3:42Sounds pretty intense.
- 3:44And I'm going to like spell it for you.
- 3:47Oh, jeez.
- 3:48B-A-X.
- 3:49B-A-X-W-A-L-A-N-U-K-S-I-W-E.
- 3:54That feels a little overwhelming.
- 3:56It does.
- 3:57But when you get it broken down for you, Baxbakwalanuksiwe’.
- 4:01It's not too bad.
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:03For sure.
- 4:04No, I mean, I'm glad that it didn't come up at the sixth grade spelling bee, but.
- 4:09Right.
- 4:10Right.
- 4:11Because that would be rough.
- 4:13But intense.
- 4:14It's actually funny.
- 4:15You mentioned that because I found a lot of the info for this in like a, it's a grade school
- 4:21curriculum.
- 4:22Really?
- 4:23Yeah.
- 4:24It says it's meant for grades four and five.
- 4:26Okay.
- 4:27Very specific.
- 4:28Because this story is a little.
- 4:32It's, I mean, it's a little rough.
- 4:35Yeah.
- 4:36So I wanted to find something that kind of also not watered it down, but like made it a
- 4:40little more tame.
- 4:41So like maybe I, you know, talk about the grade school version a little bit than, rather
- 4:46than maybe make it a little bit more palatable.
- 4:50So I guess we're going to find out am I smarter than a fifth grader?
- 4:54Am I more emotionally mature than a fifth grader?
- 4:58Probably not.
- 4:59I feel like I know the answers, but we'll find out.
- 5:04Would you like to know what, Baxbakwalanuksiwe’ translates to?
- 5:08Yeah.
- 5:11Man eater at the north end of the world.
- 5:14Yeah, I had a feeling that it was going to be something that I wasn't going to be super
- 5:20psyched about, but.
- 5:21So I'm sending you the picture of him.
- 5:25Oh boy.
- 5:29This is Nightmare Fuel.
- 5:32No, this is Baxbakwalanuksiwe’.
- 5:35Listen, as someone who's worked in a lot of dental offices, that's not normal dentition.
- 5:42It's entirely too many teeth.
- 5:44A lot of teeth.
- 5:46A lot of mouths.
- 5:48A lot of weirdly placed mouths.
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:51Are you seeing where all the mouths are placed?
- 5:54Yeah, they.
- 5:55So let's describe them a little bit.
- 5:58So he's kind of, they say, "Anthro."
- 6:00I can't say the word "anthro per-."
- 6:03Anthropomorphic?
- 6:04So they're anthropomorphic.
- 6:07We're just going to leave it with Caitlyn saying it.
- 6:09Anthropomorphic.
- 6:10So he kind of does have a human appearance.
- 6:13He's got like, you know, a torso, legs, head, mouths, arms, the nose.
- 6:21And is there any?
- 6:22Yeah, I don't think he has ears or eyes.
- 6:24Doesn't look like it because all of them are mouths.
- 6:28Where those should be.
- 6:30So he's pretty horrifying, terrifying.
- 6:34Caitlyn did say it correctly when she said nightmare fuel.
- 6:38Yeah.
- 6:39His entire body is covered in mouths.
- 6:44His butts amount, his lower back is a mouth.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:48His feet.
- 6:49His knees are a mouth.
- 6:50His knees, there's mouths placed randomly on his arms and legs and shoulders.
- 6:55He has a mouth where mouths go.
- 6:57Yeah.
- 6:58He does have that.
- 7:00He's also got like the plague doctor sort of like I think is that his nose?
- 7:06That's his nose.
- 7:07Yeah, and it's very cute.
- 7:08Okay.
- 7:09And it does have that nostril.
- 7:10So he can sniff you out.
- 7:12It is quite sizable in terms of nostril size.
- 7:17It does remind me of substance a little bit.
- 7:20The substance.
- 7:21Yes.
- 7:22The end of the substance.
- 7:25If you guys haven't seen that, go watch it.
- 7:30And then look at beautiful baba wallet oxy way here.
- 7:34Oh, right.
- 7:35Oh, and they also have him kind of compared that little pink picture looks like they're
- 7:40comparing him to a human.
- 7:42So he's a little bit bigger.
- 7:43Well, he's a lot of bit bigger than a human.
- 7:45He's a lot of bit bigger.
- 7:47Yeah.
- 7:48His nose is basically the size of a human.
- 7:51They describe his mouth as gaping snapping bloody.
- 7:56And his call is hap hap hap, which means eat or something along those lines in that
- 8:02language.
- 8:03Oh, and the way I read hap hap was not as a word.
- 8:08I read it as in it on a monopoeia like a no, I read it as like an on a monopoeia sound
- 8:14like.
- 8:15Oh, I was making it yapier.
- 8:19Yeah.
- 8:20Look at dog.
- 8:21I was I was trying to tone it down a little bit.
- 8:23Yeah, yours makes here's makes more sense in light of the visual, which is kind of funny
- 8:29speaking of dogs because my dog used to make the sound when she was like being pissy and
- 8:33irritate and a little shit to me.
- 8:35And she was like, talk back and she would go, well, maybe she's got a little little cannibal
- 8:43in her.
- 8:44Fuck.
- 8:45I mean, she did like to lick the tune nibble me.
- 8:49So maybe.
- 8:50Well, maybe she was a nibble or we talked about it.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:54Among a few variations in the spelling, there are also a few variations in the translation.
- 9:01He who first ate man at the mouth of the river or he who first ate humans on the water.
- 9:09Okay.
- 9:10The and this is a quote, the ever more perfect manifestation of the essence of humanity.
- 9:19That's poetic as fuck.
- 9:23Yeah, but I mean, it's kind of words like creepy words salad, but ever more perfect manifestation
- 9:33of the essence of humanity is this like we're all just walking around with these giant mouths
- 9:39just wanting shit from everybody, just trying to eat up everybody.
- 9:44Just worried about ourselves.
- 9:45I mean, if you turn it into like a metaphor, sure, I'm just saying like if you go down to
- 9:51the base and it's like ever more perfect and we're talking about a cannibalistic creature.
- 9:57Yeah.
- 9:58Not that feels those are those are contradicting delios.
- 10:04Yeah.
- 10:05My dude.
- 10:06I don't think it can be true.
- 10:07You've said it.
- 10:08Those two things cannot cannot cannot can be true.
- 10:12Okay.
- 10:13I don't that's a qualifier that I don't know I've ever agreed to.
- 10:20Well, I think we should all just take that and like I was like a journal prompt and just
- 10:26like journal about this for a little while because I just I want to know what everyone thinks.
- 10:31Okay.
- 10:33Or simply man eater.
- 10:35He's a man.
- 10:38He is also known by one other name.
- 10:40This is the name that actually really drew me to him.
- 10:44Cannibal at the north end of the world.
- 10:47Listen, I want things to be kind of neat and tidy.
- 10:52You got to give it a little pop, but I like that.
- 10:56That's good.
- 10:57Cannibal at the north end of the world.
- 10:58That's the one.
- 10:59Yeah.
- 11:00It's like be descriptive, but don't be like blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
- 11:03You know, you need a leader, you know, it could mean several different things.
- 11:07Okay.
- 11:08Cannibal is very clear.
- 11:09This is true.
- 11:10I think, you know, it's eloquent in its brevity.
- 11:13He could be going Nelly Furtado on everyone's ass.
- 11:16Ooh.
- 11:17So Mr. Man's eater here is the villain of the Hamat’sa or Cannibal Dance, which is the first
- 11:26most important and infamous dances of the Seca ceremony.
- 11:31I probably didn't say that totally correctly because it's like the chaos of weird mouth
- 11:35feel and I don't.
- 11:36I didn't get it right.
- 11:37But yeah.
- 11:38Seca.
- 11:39Seca.
- 11:40Seca.
- 11:41Seca or something.
- 11:42Okay.
- 11:43Okay.
- 11:44No, that can be hard because like some languages do have like this.
- 11:49And mouth feel is exactly the right word for it.
- 11:52It's like when you speak French, but you don't do the, you know, yeah.
- 11:56Yes.
- 11:57And it's like the quah quah, K-walk has like a W at the end of it that's supposed to be
- 12:01like, oh, and you're like, I'm trying.
- 12:04I'm so close.
- 12:06And to oh my gosh.
- 12:07And I found a YouTube video where actually someone was pronouncing all of the words.
- 12:11So I was crying just so hard.
- 12:13And I'm like, you say it's so much better than me.
- 12:15Yeah.
- 12:16And I just get like, can you come on our podcast?
- 12:18It's right.
- 12:19No, but it's like it's very difficult to actually train your mouth to like hit the syllables
- 12:25in the police sometimes.
- 12:28Mouth words are hard.
- 12:29Mouth words are hard.
- 12:30Hey, you can do the research.
- 12:32You can do the research and sometimes in the moment, the words that you say, it's like
- 12:38you don't hit quite the right like intonation or pronunciation.
- 12:42I hope I'm doing it right.
- 12:44I just refresh right before this, but we'll see.
- 12:47Yeah.
- 12:48And here's the thing is I think that everybody knows you're taking the time.
- 12:52You are making the effort.
- 12:55And I think that's the most important thing.
- 12:57We do, we do try to nail it whenever possible, but you know, and if someone speaks the
- 13:02language, please come on our show.
- 13:04Please, I would love to talk to you.
- 13:07Yeah, though it'd be so cool.
- 13:09I love to, I love to actually hear people in their native, you know, language and like hear
- 13:14it how it's supposed to be said and not, you know, butchered by us.
- 13:19Yeah.
- 13:20I also have a lot of questions like a lot of questions.
- 13:23I can only imagine.
- 13:26Canada outlawed the ceremony in 1885 because naturally.
- 13:32All of the organizers didn't understand it and found it too disturbing.
- 13:36Kate, when the cannibalism, yeah, the cannibalism thing, yeah, they kind of didn't get it.
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:45No, and biologically we're kind of supposed to not, we shouldn't do it.
- 13:51Right.
- 13:52Definitely probably shouldn't do it.
- 13:53No, you definitely shouldn't.
- 13:56You definitely shouldn't.
- 13:57Like if you're trying to, hey, we don't, we don't judge, you know, the people that had
- 14:03to do it.
- 14:04But we, sure, survival is one thing.
- 14:07I would say with cultural traditions, we can respect that that was the culture, but also
- 14:12understand that those are things that can actually make people like fatally ill.
- 14:19Yeah.
- 14:20And I mean, I'm not even talking about cultural cannibalism or anything like that.
- 14:24I'm just talking about like, you know, the donor pass or the donnor party or whatever, like
- 14:28people that just had to do it to survive.
- 14:31But that is kind of a big misunderstanding with this whole thing and we'll go on and
- 14:37I'll explain what the ceremony is all about.
- 14:41So they did attempt to kind of erase it from history and they wanted them to assimilate
- 14:46into their culture and just kind of erase their whole.
- 14:51See.
- 14:52Pass.
- 14:53Like if we're just trying to, you know, make people safe, that's one thing.
- 14:59Right.
- 15:00But the erasure of their culture, that's where it becomes like, yeah, it's giving colonization.
- 15:06And then once I explain it to, I think you're going to be like, wait, what?
- 15:09They just truly didn't get it.
- 15:11Oh, no.
- 15:14This is the story behind the Hamatsa ceremony and Baxbakwalanuksiwe’, the villain of the
- 15:22story.
- 15:23Four sons of the chief found the house of the man eater, Baxbakwalanuksiwe’.
- 15:30Oh, and of course they went inside, they checked it out.
- 15:34It's that part in the horror movie where they go down into the basement, you know?
- 15:39Right.
- 15:40I just, yeah.
- 15:42Well then once inside they realized that the creatures in there were trying to eat them.
- 15:47You don't say.
- 15:49Like, Baxbakwalanuksiwe’ was probably like, did you not see like the man eater sign?
- 15:55Like, you're in my house, dude.
- 15:58My door mat literally says man eater, turn back.
- 16:05It kind of reminds me of like, Hansel and Gretel.
- 16:07Yes.
- 16:08Where they find like the witch's house.
- 16:10Yeah.
- 16:11And then she wants to eat them.
- 16:12Yeah.
- 16:13I mean, it's kind of a, it's a spin off.
- 16:17Did we like, did we cancel, Hansel and Gretel?
- 16:19Probably not.
- 16:20Did we outlaw that story?
- 16:22No.
- 16:23Well, maybe I'm not actually sure the history on that.
- 16:26We'll come back to it.
- 16:27Okay.
- 16:28Anyway, so they didn't want to get ate.
- 16:30So they ran and they got chased all the way home by Baba Wollanoxiewe.
- 16:36But they didn't make some obstacles along the way to slow him down.
- 16:40Hmm.
- 16:41So they made it home in time to warn their father, the chief.
- 16:44By the way, he was the chief.
- 16:45I don't know if you heard of him.
- 16:46The four sons of the chief.
- 16:48Princes, right?
- 16:49They would be princes.
- 16:50I don't know what chief sons are actually called, but in my mind, they're like spoiled little
- 16:53princes.
- 16:54Yeah.
- 16:55I could be totally wrong.
- 16:56I don't know what their title would be in a thin sense.
- 17:01It's fine.
- 17:02Someone let us know.
- 17:03They made it home in time to warn their father of what was like just coming right behind
- 17:08them.
- 17:09They're like, everybody should go.
- 17:11Oh.
- 17:12Yes.
- 17:13You brought this guy here to the village.
- 17:16Daddy, we fucked up.
- 17:19We don't fucked up.
- 17:20The chief greets the cannibal very politely and is like, hey, you want to kill my kids?
- 17:27Like, that's fine.
- 17:29But you should go back and like bring your wife and son with you so you can all just have
- 17:36a feast.
- 17:37Oh, in the fourth and fifth grade version, it kind of just says, you know, he nicely just
- 17:45told them, hey, go back and get your wife and kid and come back.
- 17:48He didn't mention anything about like, you can have my son.
- 17:51They're like worthless anyway.
- 17:53I don't need that.
- 17:54Oh, okay.
- 17:55That was another version of the story I found, but I thought that was really funny.
- 17:58No, that's what I'm getting like the spoiled prince vibe.
- 18:01Yeah.
- 18:02I will say I think I'm picturing the reaction of the spoiled princes and I'm just, I'm hearing
- 18:12them.
- 18:13We are so putting him in a home.
- 18:16You know what I mean?
- 18:18Like, dad, that is so fun.
- 18:22Seriously.
- 18:23But I think he was just kind of like trying to pull one over on Baxbakwalanuksiwe’
- 18:27Oh, yeah.
- 18:28I don't know why he, he listened to the chief.
- 18:31He's like, oh, yeah.
- 18:32My family could eat.
- 18:33Well, let's go get the wife and kid.
- 18:35Just probably get a bitch about dinner if I eat without her.
- 18:38Honestly, that's thoughtful of you.
- 18:43Can you imagine a little baby, Baba?
- 18:46I know.
- 18:49It would still be bigger than me.
- 18:51Not the mama.
- 18:55When he returns with his family, the chief invited him to sit on this beautiful new throne,
- 19:01like not a throne, but like it's just a nice seat.
- 19:03Like a guest seat, you know?
- 19:06Okay.
- 19:07But like here's my throne.
- 19:08You can be chief or anything.
- 19:10Just like a nice seat for him to sit in.
- 19:12It's like this, cause like a place of honor.
- 19:14Right.
- 19:15In their big, so I assume they don't need, they don't want like a normal human size chair.
- 19:19They probably want like a big chair, right?
- 19:21Yeah, that feels fair.
- 19:22Yeah.
- 19:23That's how I feel when I get on an airplane.
- 19:27I don't want this normal human size chair.
- 19:30I want first class size.
- 19:32So they built him a first class size plain seat.
- 19:35No, that's perfect.
- 19:38I love that.
- 19:40And they're all having kind of a good time.
- 19:43Telling stories, it was like, hey, since you're here, we'll tell you a bunch of stories from
- 19:48our history and our people.
- 19:51Love it.
- 19:52And you can just chill.
- 19:54And we'll entertain you.
- 19:56And then eventually the guests fall asleep.
- 19:58You know, I don't know if they were.
- 19:59They're having drinkies.
- 20:00They didn't really, it wasn't really clear in here, but the, the, the Bob is all fall asleep.
- 20:06Okay.
- 20:07I was, I was going to say the guests as in the, the manators.
- 20:11Yes, the manators.
- 20:12Great.
- 20:13Just needed to be real.
- 20:14The cannibals at the north end of the world at the, at the north pole.
- 20:18Cannibals at the north pole from Santa.
- 20:20Excellent.
- 20:21They're the labris.
- 20:24As they slut the four sons who was the bait basically to get them to come back here.
- 20:32They pulled apart the chairs, which were built specifically for the Boba family and underneath
- 20:41the chairs was a huge pit of boiling water.
- 20:45Oh, no.
- 20:46So when they pull the chairs right off from under their booties, they're sleeping little booties
- 20:51where they thought they were safe.
- 20:52They were having a good time party.
- 20:54They were, they were going to eat.
- 20:55They were going to have a great meal, but they ended up in a boiling pit of water.
- 21:01And they died.
- 21:02The whole family taken out in one night.
- 21:05That is tragic.
- 21:06It's like the red wedding all over again.
- 21:08That's what it totally reminded me of.
- 21:10Yeah.
- 21:11Like, hey, come over.
- 21:13We're going to have a good time.
- 21:14You want to hang out and our kingdom?
- 21:18Jokes on you, you're dead.
- 21:19Okay, so just a couple of thoughts notes.
- 21:26How is it that you can position a ginormous chair over a pit of boiling water and no one notices?
- 21:33Because I number one would have a very obvious sign atop my head that something in the atmosphere
- 21:40was changing.
- 21:41Right.
- 21:42Yeah.
- 21:43But I don't think the Bobbos have hair.
- 21:47They look hairless to me.
- 21:49So I mean, that's true.
- 21:50Did they not yield their butt mounds getting a little moist?
- 21:56Maybe it was a really deep pit.
- 21:57I don't know, but they built that was like part of the reason they wanted to get them out
- 22:02of there.
- 22:03Because like, they're like, we need to come up with a plan to kill these guys for sure.
- 22:06But build this pit while they're gone.
- 22:09Excellent, excellent work in what I have to assume was a very quick turnaround.
- 22:14And you know what, they're probably pretty moist because of all of those mounds.
- 22:20They're just walking humidifiers anyway.
- 22:24So they just couldn't tell.
- 22:26And they don't have eyes so they can't see.
- 22:29Okay, you know this about me.
- 22:31I don't have a problem with the word moist.
- 22:35What I do have, I take issue with erroneous moisture.
- 22:41I simply can't.
- 22:46I realize this shouldn't be the most upsetting part of the story, but I think I've just hit a wall.
- 22:51And it's just like fuck the boiling water.
- 22:55I'm done.
- 22:56I said, okay, she brought me cannibalism and then moisture.
- 23:02Well, I think I'm also going to fuck up your world a little bit more because there's more
- 23:06of the stories that I mean, I assumed it wasn't over yet.
- 23:09So that's fine.
- 23:10When the Baba family was murdered tragically in this horrible situation, backstabbing
- 23:20manipulative bullshit.
- 23:23Their ashes scattered to the wind, transforming into mosquitoes.
- 23:31Okay, that I do believe, which is why mosquitoes bite and suck your blood.
- 23:38Honestly, that for me, that tracks, except they fell into a pit full of boiling water.
- 23:46So why would they touch ash?
- 23:48I don't know.
- 23:49Super natural.
- 23:50For serious, if you are a native speaker, if you are someone who just has familiarity with
- 23:59the mythology, we have questions.
- 24:03So many questions.
- 24:04There was, it did say hot stones in boiling water.
- 24:07Like maybe it was just hot stones and no water.
- 24:10And they were, or it just kept going.
- 24:13They had like a roaring fire and all of the water eventually just evaporated off.
- 24:20Maybe.
- 24:21And then, okay, wow, I'm really getting into this.
- 24:25I know.
- 24:26I'm very curious.
- 24:27I was very curious to how the ash got into the sky from the water, but down in the pit
- 24:35and it evaporated and all the ash evaporated into the clouds and then it rained.
- 24:40Well, right, but I'm saying there wouldn't be ash if they were boiled to done.
- 24:44I meant like they're okay, so maybe ash isn't the word.
- 24:47I'm thinking, okay, so their bodies disintegrated in the water, turned a sludge.
- 24:52The sludge was evaporated into the clouds and then rained down little mosquitoes.
- 24:57So I'm done.
- 24:58Oh my god.
- 24:59Neither of those is good.
- 25:01I hate it.
- 25:02I hate it.
- 25:03It's all bad.
- 25:04Oh, and
- 25:04mosquitoes.
- 25:05I forgot.
- 25:06So you got a skin of a little bit of moisture and mosquitoes and that's three strikes.
- 25:14You are.
- 25:15It was your trifecta.
- 25:16No, no, no.
- 25:17It honestly is.
- 25:18It honestly is.
- 25:19Are there bees as well?
- 25:22No, there's no bees.
- 25:25But after the death of the Baba family, the four sons went back to his house and they're
- 25:32like, let's see if we can steal anything from the poor Baba family that we just murdered.
- 25:38Well, sure.
- 25:39Yeah, they don't need their stuff anymore.
- 25:40So I hate to see it go to waste.
- 25:44So they go and they steal a mask of he had a raven there, which was like a man eating raven
- 25:53pet that he had.
- 25:55Okay.
- 25:56I think by virtue, all ravens can be man eating.
- 26:00Right.
- 26:01I know.
- 26:02Valley cheer if you're dead.
- 26:04Right.
- 26:05How hard are they trying?
- 26:06That's why I brought my product today.
- 26:08Makes sense.
- 26:09Makes sense.
- 26:10They use the masks, these big old like bird beak masks in their ceremony to this day, the
- 26:16Hamatsa ceremony.
- 26:17So I'm going to describe the ceremony to you.
- 26:20This was like outlawed for a really long time, which thankfully it's been brought in
- 26:24back and it didn't actually get a raise from history and people are still talking about
- 26:28it and learning about it.
- 26:30And I'm going to tell you about it.
- 26:31And it is an initiation ceremony that has changed a lot over time.
- 26:38Obviously.
- 26:40In the past, the initiate would go into the woods for sometimes months, mommy, yeah, months
- 26:47and be possessed by Baba while in oxy way.
- 26:50Okay.
- 26:51Well, if you're alone in the woods, I mean, yeah, that'll do things to you.
- 26:59Well, you might get possessed by the spirit of a candle.
- 27:03Okay.
- 27:04The initiate would return to their village in a highly erratic state, biting out and shouting
- 27:11"Happappapp."
- 27:12And healers would have to catch him and call him.
- 27:15And was he just angry?
- 27:19Did he need a snickers?
- 27:20He might have been angry, but they, I mean, they say he was possessed by Baba while in
- 27:26oxy way, the candle.
- 27:29And so they would like kind of do an exorcism on him, basically.
- 27:33They said the healers would calm him down, which I'm assuming is get the evil spirit out
- 27:37of him.
- 27:38Yeah.
- 27:39They got a cleanse, the evil out of a bricky Bobby.
- 27:41And now, obviously, all of this is done symbolically.
- 27:45They don't actually send someone out to the woods for months to get possessed.
- 27:49Oh, wait.
- 27:50So that doesn't happen anymore?
- 27:53No.
- 27:54Okay.
- 27:55Okay.
- 27:56Okay.
- 27:57That's fair.
- 27:58What is the PTO for that?
- 27:59I know, right?
- 28:00And I think this is kind of why it got outlawed because they were seeing kind of part of it
- 28:05and kind of getting part of the story.
- 28:07And they're like, these people are just getting possessed and eating people like what is going
- 28:11on.
- 28:12But no, they weren't actually eating anybody.
- 28:14They didn't know.
- 28:16Perform cannibalism in these ceremonies.
- 28:18The ceremony was because they're tried, defeated, a monster.
- 28:24It gets all about them defeating this big bad monster in the woods and doing a celebration
- 28:31about it.
- 28:32Okay.
- 28:33So this is like the British Columbia First Nations version of the Satanic Panic.
- 28:40Kind of.
- 28:41Yeah.
- 28:42My pearls.
- 28:43Right.
- 28:44Like, look at them acting out and talking about cannibal.
- 28:51We just don't understand.
- 28:53We're too white.
- 28:54Okay.
- 28:55So literally the only cannibalism is only so far like defeated.
- 29:00Yes.
- 29:01Yes.
- 29:02Yes.
- 29:03The mythological creature from the legend and the culture and which was basically explaining
- 29:09why mosquitoes exist.
- 29:11Yeah.
- 29:12Which that feels fair because honestly, it makes sense.
- 29:15I don't have a better explanation.
- 29:17I was also being kind of silly about like, oh, they murdered this family of cannibalistic
- 29:23monsters.
- 29:24I was being a little silly about that.
- 29:27Secious.
- 29:28Yeah.
- 29:29And I didn't, I kind of want to bring that up because I'm like, wait, I don't want them
- 29:31to think I'm trying to bash their, what they're actually celebrating here in this very
- 29:36beautiful ceremony with these beautiful bird masks and like carved hand carved and other
- 29:44regalia and music and dances that just celebrate this story from their history.
- 29:51So I just sort of put that out there.
- 29:52I wasn't like making fun of them or anything.
- 29:55Yeah.
- 29:56I just get silly.
- 29:57Yeah.
- 29:58You're like, this is, I don't know if you've ever heard of it.
- 30:01How you say sarcasm?
- 30:02Yeah.
- 30:03Kind of the kind of, but then I'm also like, I have that thing in me that like wants to root
- 30:08for the thing everyone is scared of too.
- 30:10So I'm always trying to figure out like that guy and like, hey, he has a wife and kids
- 30:16like, is he that?
- 30:18Well, that's so to BTK.
- 30:22Oh, the thing that doesn't mean nothing.
- 30:25I also had a thought is Bob a well and oxy way actually a cannibal because he's not human.
- 30:33Yes.
- 30:34Oh my God.
- 30:35That has been bothering me so much this whole time because I was like, or are we the
- 30:39same species?
- 30:40Yeah.
- 30:41And I looked, I mean, I looked up the definition of cannibal and it says, you know, eating your own
- 30:47kind.
- 30:48So I don't know.
- 30:49Maybe they, maybe they had a different word that just doesn't quite translate into English.
- 30:58Yeah.
- 30:59Like, maybe they don't actually mean cannibal.
- 31:01I don't know.
- 31:02But they could.
- 31:03Yeah.
- 31:04Or maybe there's some sort of a like, you know, Spider-Man, well, I mean, he was Peter then,
- 31:11but you know when he gets big, like origin story.
- 31:14Like origin story.
- 31:15Yes, origin story.
- 31:16Yeah.
- 31:17But they do, I mean, they call him like a man eater and stuff.
- 31:20So I mean, maybe they're coming from the fact that they're men and he's kind of manlike.
- 31:26Like he has manlike mouths and things.
- 31:29A lot of manlike mouths, mouths of those.
- 31:33So if we're going to put it back into like Peter Parker terms, and I think we should, because
- 31:38it's a fun thought experiment right now.
- 31:41This is sort of what I pictured when I had like a occupational exposure in a dental office.
- 31:50I'm like, that's what's going to happen to me.
- 31:52I'm just going to be a guy with mouths all over like radiation.
- 31:56No, I mean, I like, I wasn't exposed to like radioactive toxic goo or anything.
- 32:02Just like other people's cooties.
- 32:05So.
- 32:06Oh, okay.
- 32:07That's good.
- 32:08I was like kind of worried about you for a second.
- 32:09I'm like, wait, you were well, but radiation is in like X-rays and stuff.
- 32:13So that's not that weird.
- 32:14Exactly.
- 32:15Well, are you ready to do some tarot?
- 32:17Yeah.
- 32:18I think I need like a 10 second like head star on tarot.
- 32:24Are you running?
- 32:25Yeah.
- 32:26Are you running from Baba while in oxy ways?
- 32:29You can get to your father in time to warn him so you can make a trap.
- 32:32Yeah, he's a pretty long walk to Florida.
- 32:35So that's true.
- 32:37Yeah.
- 32:38Okay.
- 32:39So I have shuffled a ton.
- 32:47And then I'm going to put my mic down because I don't have a mic stand.
- 32:51So Caitlin's going to talk while I pick the card.
- 32:54So she's fanning out the deck very, I would say dramatically.
- 32:59I think she's fingering it right now.
- 33:04Baba while in oxy ways.
- 33:05It was me.
- 33:06I will not.
- 33:07It's it.
- 33:08Baba.
- 33:09Is that still right?
- 33:10I thought it was Bach Bach.
- 33:11Oh, Bach, Bach, Bach, Bach, Bach, Bach, Bach, Baba.
- 33:12Okay.
- 33:13So I, yeah, so I was saying Baba, I meant Bach Bach because they did find the first pronunciation
- 33:25I found because it was a struggle before I found the videos.
- 33:29They were saying Baba.
- 33:30So Baba while in oxy way.
- 33:34Which is so clear.
- 33:35Because I might say Bach's back.
- 33:37But I wouldn't just say Baba.
- 33:39B-A-X based on the standard spelling.
- 33:42They sound like they knew what they were talking about.
- 33:44They said like that's what the sound makes in this language.
- 33:47So I was like, all right, you must be right.
- 33:49And then I found someone actually saying it.
- 33:51So I, I'm going to go with the person who was actually saying it, who I could tell was
- 33:56from like a native speaker.
- 33:58Culture?
- 33:59So sorry, yes.
- 34:01Let's see it right.
- 34:02Bach Bach while in oxy way.
- 34:05I do realize too I was saying the Baba family.
- 34:07I'm at the Bach Bach family when I shortened it.
- 34:09Because I think when I went through and changed my pronunciations, I missed a couple.
- 34:14So sorry, it's Bach Bach, not Baba.
- 34:17We got just the imagery of it.
- 34:20It is the seven of ones.
- 34:24And it is a bird up on a cliff.
- 34:27Interesting.
- 34:28Okay.
- 34:29It reminded me of the pit of boiling water.
- 34:32Oh.
- 34:33Because like at the bottom.
- 34:34There's like birds kind of, there doesn't, doesn't look like they're falling into a pit,
- 34:38but they're kind of beautiful.
- 34:39Yeah, I mean, you could interpret the image that way.
- 34:42Okay, so that's interesting because I will say just based on just pure vibes, I would have
- 34:50expected maybe some sort.
- 34:53Right.
- 34:54Some teeth by maybe one of the major arcana.
- 34:58But we got ones.
- 34:59So seven of ones.
- 35:02The crow tries to defend his territory at the top of the mountain.
- 35:06The approaching crows below are all too eager to knock him down and take his spot.
- 35:11This card is a reminder that although you've made it, you must not be complacent as there
- 35:17will be those who believe your position should be theirs.
- 35:21The seven of ones ask that you remain self-confident and have courage when facing challenges.
- 35:27It won't always be easy at the top that you've earned the right to be there.
- 35:31Okay.
- 35:32I mean, I don't know.
- 35:34It was all about defeating a monster.
- 35:36I'm just saying, I'm just saying.
- 35:39Have courage facing the challenges.
- 35:40They had to like hide performing their sacred.
- 35:43Like this was like one of the most sacred ceremonies they have and they got outlawed.
- 35:48Like they could go to prison for performing it.
- 35:52So like they had to find a way to keep that alive while it was outlawed and then like bring
- 35:58it back to life later on so that their future ancestors could still have it.
- 36:03I don't know what you call that.
- 36:04Right.
- 36:05Yeah.
- 36:06No.
- 36:07I mean, you're progeny.
- 36:08Yeah.
- 36:09Yeah.
- 36:10God.
- 36:11Why people suck.
- 36:12They're right.
- 36:13It's wrong with us, you guys.
- 36:14Well, okay.
- 36:15So here's the thing is I say that because it's funny.
- 36:20It's colonized.
- 36:23And oppressors suck.
- 36:24Right.
- 36:25Sometimes I know we say that and we kind of assume that you all know what we mean.
- 36:31Just to clarify, feels weird to start doing it now at four years in, but you know.
- 36:36I don't care.
- 36:37Fuck them.
- 36:38Love you guys.
- 36:39Yeah.
- 36:40Caleb, you bye.
- 36:41Okay.
- 36:42So our keywords are courage fighting for what you believe in and facing challenges.
- 36:49Wow.
- 36:50Do I even need to read the rest?
- 36:55Yeah.
- 36:56Like the whole story of Baba will knock, knock, knock, see way in like the four sons and
- 37:02the chief just saying, feels like it's pretty on the note.
- 37:08When the seven of wands appears in a reading, you may need to stand up for yourself and
- 37:13fight for what you believe in.
- 37:16You can't confront you, but you possess the resources to succeed.
- 37:20They did.
- 37:21They put all those obstacles in the way they built a trap.
- 37:25Yeah.
- 37:26They have those fancy chairs that nobody can feel the moisturizing up their bungholes.
- 37:35I think of this as the don't give up card.
- 37:39Wow.
- 37:40Immediately, I was like, I give up because cannibalism.
- 37:47You have to understand it.
- 37:49Then it's not so scary.
- 37:50Well, the monster part still scary.
- 37:51That's why they killed us.
- 37:54I feel like it's very representative of a lot of things that feel very real right now.
- 38:02You just have to understand how to defeat the beast.
- 38:07When this card appears, you may need to fend off competitors or enemies to achieve your
- 38:12objective.
- 38:14Even if the challenges are formidable, you can overcome them.
- 38:19The seven encourages you to stay strong and focus your will to win the struggle.
- 38:24Wow.
- 38:25Yeah.
- 38:26Like that literally keeps saying it, but that's what that whole like initiation ceremony
- 38:30is about.
- 38:31I mean, it really is.
- 38:33Yeah.
- 38:34When you're reading about money, this card tells you to hold firm in a financial matter, even
- 38:38if things appear difficult, a present, avoid arguments about money or possessions.
- 38:44So maybe don't let your dad over here.
- 38:48That thing about we are so putting him in a home.
- 38:52Right.
- 38:53Because he didn't mean it.
- 38:54He was just using them as bait.
- 38:55Yeah.
- 38:56For sure, Z's.
- 38:57Oh my God, you're going to absolutely shit when I get to the extra excerpt, I think.
- 39:03I'm eating my fingers right now.
- 39:05I'm cannibalizing myself.
- 39:06I'm so glad I could help.
- 39:10Interbreeding about work, the upright seven advises holding your ground.
- 39:15Try to keep your spirits up and don't show weakness.
- 39:19Oh, whoa.
- 39:20Keep working diligently for what you want.
- 39:23Don't let other people distract you.
- 39:26Yeah.
- 39:27Don't at the Bach Bach family.
- 39:30They got distracted by all the nice stories and the nice seating and they just got so cozy
- 39:36and they went right.
- 39:37Nine, nine.
- 39:38Interbreeding about love, this card recommends trying to work things out with a partner instead
- 39:44of swabbling.
- 39:45Maybe about your dinner plan.
- 39:48Go get your wife the first time and the shit wouldn't happen.
- 39:51I don't know, maybe.
- 39:53She'd probably be smarter and be like, um, yeah, we're just going to eat right now.
- 39:57I've got some things on this.
- 39:59Um, it may seem easier to just give up, but if you keep a positive attitude, you can resolve
- 40:06difficulties.
- 40:07Okay.
- 40:08When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.
- 40:16Hang on.
- 40:17They should have had a rope to pull them out of the boiling pit of water.
- 40:25It's an FDR quote.
- 40:26Oh, front of the pot.
- 40:29Yeah, front of the pot, obviously.
- 40:31I just love that this was all about like a cultural, like story and like, you know, the mythology
- 40:41and not about actual cannibalism.
- 40:44Yeah.
- 40:45Because I've been eating dinner yet and I wouldn't do you that dirty.
- 40:50You, you guys, I am not kidding.
- 40:53And I say that she has been building this up for at minimum a week and she made it sound
- 40:58like I was never going to sleep or eat again.
- 41:01And I wasn't sure which or why.
- 41:04I mean, I am pretty 100% sure that you're going to have a nightmare about Mr. Teathman.
- 41:10Now, the teacher really bothered me as much as you would think.
- 41:16Honestly, for some people, listen, if if if teeth are in any way for you uncomfortable,
- 41:25maybe don't look up the the visual.
- 41:31Please look at it.
- 41:32Please go to the sources and look at it.
- 41:35It's only uncomfortable when it's in like the context of like this man eating beast, I
- 41:42think.
- 41:43Yeah.
- 41:44Well, upsetting and troubling either way, I should clarify that it's it's upsetting looking.
- 41:51It's unsettling.
- 41:54But yeah, no, like, let's be clear.
