Hey, Harder Than Life Nation, it's Kelly Siegel, your guide to breaking limits and building a life that's happier.
- 0:30than life. Welcome to the solo podcast episode, Radical Discipline, Mastering Habits for Unstoppable Transformation. This isn't just a pep talk, it's a blueprint, a battle plan, and a call to action for anybody ready to turn dreams into reality. If you're tired of feeling stuck, if your goals are collecting dust, or if you're ready to stop existing and start living,
- 0:58This episode's for you. Buckle up, Heart of Life Nation. Let's get to work. So the foundation of transformation, discipline isn't just a punishment, it's freedom.
- 1:09Radical discipline is the ultimate act of self-love. The bridge between where you are and where you're meant to be. It's showing up for yourself day in and day out, even when the world feels heavy, even when you're tired, even when no one's watching. This is how I went from a kid on eight miles surrounded by chaos to building national technology management,
- 1:37to a top 20 self-improvement podcast, a best-selling book, soon to be second, two best-selling books, and the Heart of the Life Nation, a movement of warriors chasing greatness. In Happier Than Life, I talk about climbing the second mountain, moving beyond empty success to true fulfillment. Radical discipline is the rope that gets you up that mountain.
- 2:03Jocko Willanick says, discipline equals freedom. Without it, you're a prisoner to emotions, excuses, and old habits. With it, you become unstoppable, a force of love, abundance, and impact. Today, I'm pulling back the curtain on the exact framework I use to build unshakable habits that deliver results.
- 2:29This isn't theory, it's battle-tested. It's how I transform from numbing pain with alcohol to waking up at four o'clock in the morning, crushing 500 workouts a year, and leading with authenticity. You don't need motivation, you need a system. Let's break it down. What radical discipline really means, I'm speaking from the heart here, this is what it means to me. Radical discipline is about choosing yourself every single day.
- 2:58I'm going to say that again. Radical discipline is about choosing yourself every single day. It's not about perfection. Lord knows none of us are perfect. It's about progress. It's about keeping promises to yourself as if your life depends on it. You've all heard me say that many times. Love yourself like your life depends on it because it does keep the promises to yourself like your life depends on it because they do.
- 3:22Here's what radical discipline looks like besides what I show you on social media, showing up when you don't want to. I don't want to work out every day, but I do. Most of the days, it's twice a day because I have to get to that 500. Motivation is fleeting, discipline is forever.
- 3:40When your mind says, I'm too tired, discipline says, get up anyway. Following through in the shadows, nobody sees the 4 a.m. wake-ups or the late night journal sessions. That's where the real wins happen.
- 3:54where I build the confidence in myself to know that I can overcome any adversity, anything that life throws at me. I build self-trust through action. Every kept promise, a workout, a meditation, a deep workout session, leaning into a funky feeling that I don't feel like feeling, it builds unshakable confidence. Embracing discomfort as growth and happier than life
- 4:23I say discomfort is the green light signaling your path forward. David Goggins nails it. You're in danger of living a life so comfortable and so soft that you will die without realizing your true potential. Radical discipline is your refusal to settle for that. It's the difference between wishing for a better life and building one. Let's be real. You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.
- 4:51Radical discipline is about creating systems so bulletproof they work even on your worst days. In Happier Than Life, I talk about the three S's, solitude, stillness, and silence.
- 5:04as a framework for mental mastery. Radical discipline is the engine that powers those practices, turning them from ideas into habits that transform your life. You don't believe me? Take a peek at my posts from 2020, and then fast forward to now, easy enough for me to say, and watch the happiness, the harder, the healthier, every part of my life got better.
- 5:30Also, take my journey with my IT cybersecurity company, National Technology Management. We lost money for years straight. Year four, we broke even. Year five, we started crushing it.
- 5:42That didn't happen because I was motivated every day. It happened because I showed up every day. Now this goes all the way back to when I first started, years and years and years ago. Again, didn't happen because I was motivated every day. It happened because I showed up, I refined systems, I refused to quit and I got better each and every day. And I'm still doing that. It is a sickness, my friends. I'm telling you, I wake up in the morning, I think how can I optimize things today?
- 6:11How can we get better? How can we give back? So when I speak about this radical discipline, I embody this stuff. Radical discipline isn't sexy, it's unstoppable. I coined this funny term called SOS, the Segal Operating System. I thought it would be cute. I break it down in Happier Than Life, the book Happier Than Life. I share the blueprint for lasting fulfillment.
- 6:36And at its core, it's what I call the Segal Operating System, or SOS for short. It's a daily framework of my habits that turns average into excellence.
- 6:47This isn't about overwhelming you with tasks. It's about mastering fundamentals that compound into massive results. Guys, remember, take the message and leave the mess. Grab one or two of these things, adapt them into your life. A lot of them you've probably heard from other thought leaders. These are not profound, but I put them in one simple, easy blueprint, easily digestible for all of us. Here's how I structure my day.
- 7:15and how you can build your own SOS system. Number one, I start off at the morning power hour. It's a non-negotiable start. I wake up at 4 a.m., but I want you guys to wake up at a consistent time, no excuses. Consistency sets the tone. I start off immediately with a gratitude practice. I write down three things that you're thankful for to shift your mindset to abundance. In my mind, I do that real, real quick right when I wake up.
- 7:43Then I meditate for 10 minutes. I do use the daily calm. It's a guided meditation. It also tracks to make sure that I do it every single day. Accountability is just as important as this radical discipline. So in chapter four of happier than life, I explain how meditation slows your mind, gives you clarity and focus. Then I meditate.
- 8:03I review my top priorities for the day. Identify your top three tasks that need to be completed. What moves the needle in business health or your relationships? Why this stuff works? This ritual aligns with your mind, your body, and your purpose before the world starts tugging at you. And do hard things first. And it's like putting on your armor for the day. Then I jump out of the bed,
- 8:31high five the mirror, brush my teeth, and boom, I'm off to the gym. I work out seven days a week, but for you, five to six is okay. If you wanna get to the seven, great. Again, in chapter three of Happier Than Life, it's all about building your physical foundation. Movement is non-negotiable, and even if it's a 15-minute walk or bodyweight exercise, something needs to be done. In addition to your mental fitness,
- 9:00Your physical mastery must be done. The mental fitness and the physical mastery is what sets the foundation to crush all of your business and life goals. Remember, nutrition is fuel. I use cheat codes like pre-prepared meals to ensure high quality protein, not junk. Because when I get really busy during my day, I reach for whatever, because many of us are all alike. Why does this work?
- 9:27Because exercise rewires your brain, boosts endorphins, and builds self-trust. The Harvard Medical School research shows consistent exercise grows your hippocampus, enhancing memory and resilience. Look it up, people. When I read this, I was like, whoa, mind-blowing.
- 9:47I have a focus block, a deep, deep time that I make sure and get all my work done as much as I possibly can. 90 minutes of uninterrupted deep work, no meetings, no phone, no distractions. This is where you build your empire. Strategizing for my company, NTM, or writing your next chapter of your book. During this time, remember, I said no phones. Because when you get distracted, even if it's a text message from a family member, you're
- 10:13Turn it on silent, turn it over, put it on the charger, and leave it alone. So take and batch similar tasks together. Group emails, calls, or creative work to maximize efficiency. This all works because deep work creates exponential results. As Cal Newport says, focus is the new IQ. Focus, follow one course until success. This is where you outwork everyone else.
- 10:39What you measure matters. So track your metrics. Journal daily, write in your journal. If you go into my journal right now, right at the top is the number of workouts I'm at so I don't forget it. I don't have to think about it. Record your wins, your challenges, and your lessons for the day.
- 10:57Again, in chapter four of Happier Than Life, I talk about journaling to spot patterns and shift from why to what questions. Track those key metrics like sleep. I got to get 78 hours. Workouts, the frequency, the intensity, nutrition. For me, I track how many grams of protein I take.
- 11:17Pro tip, if you're trying to gain weight and muscle, you've got one gram of protein per body weight that you wanna weigh. So I'm 200, I wanna be 220 pounds, I took 220 grams of protein per day. Although, now that I'm doing all this extra cardio, starting to cut weight and I'm really seeing myself thin out. Be sure to track your productivity hours. Boy, when you get going through the day,
- 11:40You can feel like you're running on a treadmill and not getting anywhere. I have those days. That's why it goes back to those three tasks that have to get completed. At least at the end of the day, no matter what gets thrown at you, you get those three tasks done. You feel like you accomplished something. We've all been there where you finish your day, you're exhausted and you look back and you think back and you go...
- 12:03I didn't really get anything done to move the needle. And then you feel like a failure and then you get on life's merry-go-round. We have a weekly scorecard. I have a personal one and a professional one. So rate your performances in health, your relationships, your business on a scale from one to 10. What's working? What needs adjustment? What do I have to get rid of? Remember.
- 12:22addition through subtraction works too again i keep referring back to the book because that's the blueprint so in the new book happy in the life which will be out by the time this airs um i say what gets measured gets managed tracking creates accountability and reveals invisible progress remember i talk about this all the time you must believe in invisible progress or else
- 12:47You'll never get better. And it is tough because there's certain weeks, months, days, years that I've gone by. I'm like, what did I accomplish? But if you measure inputs at a shorter time and your outputs at a longer time, you'll see you actually are. That's the definition.
- 13:02of invisible progress. Guys, this is a very important one for me. At the evenings, at night, I have a sacred evening shutdown. I recharge and I reflect, and it's usually at dinner with my daughter.
- 13:17Now there's a couple nights a week where I can't have dinner with her, but I still sit there by myself eating at a dinner table and I do this reflection. No screens 30 minutes before bed. Blue light kills that sleep quality. And if you see something that gets you fired up, for me, it's my beloved sporting teams. If I see something happens bad, I will keep me up and my sleep is very important. Reflect on the wins. Those three tasks that you got, reflect on them.
- 13:46and express gratitude for them. What went well today and what are you thankful for? And a little pro tip, visualize tomorrow.
- 13:57Picture yourself crushing your priorities, feel that feeling, and manifest it into reality. This all works because the ritual signals your brain that the day is done and improving your sleep and setting you up for a strong start the next day. The Segal operating system isn't glamorous. It's relentless. My new friend Craig Ballantyne says success is simple once you accept how hard it is.
- 14:25So good. One of my favorite quotes. Success is simple once you accept how hard it is.
- 14:32Radical discipline turns fleeting motivation into unstoppable momentum. It's how I went from four to five hours of broken sleep to seven, eight hours of deep rest. From zero workouts to 500 planned this year. From scattered work to six hours of deep work blocks. Build your own SOS and watch your life transform. We all have...
- 15:00Valid reasons. I literally just call them excuses of why things don't get done. Excuses don't get results. Reasons don't get results. Action and doing does. So crushing excuses and overcoming resistance that we're all going to face. Again, I said excuses don't get results, period. In my new book, Happier Than Life, I talk about the sacred pause, the three-second moment where you choose to respond to,
- 15:28not react. Excuses are reactions. Discipline is a response. When your mind whispers, I'm too tired. I'll start tomorrow. One skip won't hurt. You got to shut down with action. You've got to shut it down with action. I've said a million times, what do they say? A goal without action is nothing more than a dream.
- 15:52Andy Fursella, creator of 75 Hard, says 99% of people let small excuses get in the way of big dreams. Ooh.
- 16:02Radical discipline is recognizing that those feelings are liars. They tell you to stay comfortable, to avoid discomfort, to play small. But as I've learned through therapy, the three S's, discomfort is where growth lives. Here's some recommendations on how to crush these excuses. Name the resistance. Guys, I have done this a thousand times. When I feel like skipping a workout or deep work, I say, what's really stopping me?
- 16:33Often it's fear, fear of failure, fear of discomfort, or the big one that we all face, fear of change. Use the five second rule. Guys, notice I have borrowed from everybody. Mel Robbins, yep, your friend Mel, her trick works. Count down from five, four, three, two, one, and move.
- 16:55That's how I get up in the morning. I never hit snooze, but I do sit there for a second. And then after I do my meditation, I sit there. Then almost every day I go five, four, three, two, one, boom, out. Action kills hesitation. Reframe the narrative. Instead of I don't feel like it, say this is how I become happier than life. Every action kills.
- 17:17is a vote for who you're becoming. Ooh, that feels good. Create non-negotiables. My workouts, meditation, and deep work blocks are sacred. They're non-negotiable, no exceptions.
- 17:31During the pandemic, Michigan was locked down. I could have drowned in excuses. Business was tanking. Lost custody of my daughter. We lost our biggest customer. The gyms were closed. None of that stopped me. I declared war on myself and my business. This is where I developed
- 17:51The Segal Operating System. I still got up at 4 a.m., trained like a beast. Before I even could order any weights, I did body weights and ran around my neighborhood like I was possessed. I started the Heart of the Life brand. Excuses would have ended my story. Discipline wrote a new one.
- 18:12There is a compounding effect of daily habits, my friends. Success isn't built in a day. It's built daily. Again, back to chapter seven of happier than life. I talk about new success metrics. Track your sleep, your workouts, relationships, and impact. Not just your money. Money's the easy one.
- 18:30Radical discipline is understanding that small, consistent actions compound into massive results. One workout doesn't make you fit, but one missed workout starts a new habit. One deep work session doesn't build an empire, but one skipped session erodes your focus. As I'm recording this, this is Sunday, midday, and it's the only day I have time to
- 18:53to record so i'm in here working on a sunday so one clean meal doesn't transform your health but one cheat meal can derail your progress
- 19:01Momentum is a snowball, either rolling towards excellence or decline. Notice, momentum works both ways. It is much harder to get off the negative momentum train than it is to get off the positive momentum train. James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, says, You don't need to be perfect, but you need to be consistent.
- 19:24My 500 workout challenge isn't about one epic gym session. It's about showing up 500 times. As I record this, I'm on workout number 193. And when I'm done, I'm going to watch a movie with my daughter and then go do 194. And we're on day 123 of the year. So I'm on making great progress. But you never know what the world has in store for me. So I'm going to...
- 19:53Front load this. Here's the math. If you improve by 1% every day, you're 37 times better in a year. Wow, that's amazing. That's a massive compound effect.
- 20:05But it works in reverse too. Skip 1% of your daily habits and you're sliding backwards. Radical discipline is choosing the upward spiral every single day. I look at radical discipline as radical self-respect. Every promise you keep to yourself builds self-respect. Every excuse you accept erodes it.
- 20:29Back to the Happier in Life book, and again, I'm not pushing this book, guys. I'm literally basically giving it away, but it's the whole platform of what we're talking about today. It's the blueprint. I share how I went from chasing external validation to finding it from within. Remember, everything you have, everything you require is inside of you. Follow this SOS and you will get it. Radical discipline is the path
- 20:50to the inner strength. Self-confidence is earned, it's not a gift, it's built through relentless action. Every workout, meditation, deep workout session is a deposit in your self-respect bank. You become your own validation. When you live with radical discipline, you don't need likes, claps, or applause. You know your worth because you've proven it. Remember what they say,
- 21:17You live by the praise. You die by the criticism. You radiate love and abundance. In chapter nine of Happier Than Life, I say when you operate at your highest level, you lift everyone around you, your team, your family.
- 21:33And your crew. Jocko Willanick reminds us, discipline today equals success tomorrow. When I stopped drinking, I didn't just change habits. I changed how I saw myself. I loved the man in the mirror. I went from a guy running from pain
- 21:48to the chosen one, choosing myself each and every day over and over and over again by facing challenges head on. And guess what? I got happier. That's what radical discipline does. It makes you happier than life and harder than life. So in conclusion, I'm going to give you a 30-day radical discipline challenge. This is your moment. You've got the blueprint. Now I want you to act.
- 22:17This 30 day radical discipline challenge is to turn your habits into unstoppable results. So I want you to pick three daily habits, choose three non-negotiable actions aligned with your goals. Example, 10 minute meditation, 30 minute workout, 90 minute deep work block, 20 pages of reading a day,
- 22:44Whatever looks like, and I'm going to cheat code for you. Whatever you probably don't like, whatever sounds like, oh, Kelly, that sounds awful. Pick that one. It's the hardest one. And believe me, it will make the biggest impact because that's where the universe is telling you, oh, no, that's where that's the trigger where where you need the most healing.
- 23:07So create an accountability system. Journal your progress. Post on Instagram and tag me at kellysegal.71. Guys, you guys want to know the truth?
- 23:19That's literally why I post how many workouts, I post what I'm doing, because y'all hold me accountable. The beauty part is I also have a partner, not only my relationship and romantic partner, but in my workouts and my business, I have somebody that holds me accountable. So find you an accountability partner in all aspects.
- 23:41Number three, track execution daily. Use a checklist or an app. No skipping, no excuses, just radical discipline. Number four, reflect weekly. As I told you, it's Sunday. Review your wins, challenges, and lessons. Adjust and keep pushing. And then one more is to plan your next week. I will take 10 minutes and I will just look at my whole week and I will block off areas to do even more things.
- 24:07Daily Habits and Rituals to Win. So DM me on Instagram at kelly.segal.71 with your three habits, and let's build this together. You are not alone. Remember, together we rise, people.
