- 0:00SPEAKER_02: I want to come over to this.
- 0:01SPEAKER_02: I th this is an interesting, interesting problem because you want to be helpful to your friends.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: And you wanna always you you wanna you just be overall a decent person most of the time.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Wait, I did say always I take that back.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: Not always.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: I don't always want to be helpful to my friends because sometimes they will ask things.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: I'm like Okay, where would this fall for you?
- 0:21SPEAKER_02: Go ahead, tell Ellie what it is.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: So my daughter has a friend whose mom recently asked really nicely if I'd start picking her up from school every day.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Um I already pick up my own kids, so it basically just means taking her daughter home too, which is probably an extra 10 minutes or so out of my day.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Um and then on Tuesdays it'd be a little more involved because instead of taking her straight home, I'd bring her back to my house and then take her and my daughter to gymnastics at 4 30 and bring her home afterward.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So she offered to pay me, which is great, and she told me to come up with a number, but honestly, I have no idea what I should charge for something like this.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Um I've already been doing it for about a week while we figure everything out.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: So now I gotta give her a number for this week, and then we'd have to agree on something going forward.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, I don't want to charge like some ridiculous amount because we're friends and I'm already driving my kids around anyway, but I also don't want to basically become like her daughter's chauffeur and babysitter for free.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: So I guess first of all, I just want to see if people think this is a good idea in the first place.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: But assuming it is, I'm just trying to figure out what's fair without making this weird between us.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Um, like the Tuesday thing especially feels like more than just picking up another kid from school because I'd have to basically babysit for several hours, and you know, that's my time too.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, just wanted to see if anybody does this kind of arrangement with another family.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Like, what do you charge for it?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And yeah, would you even take this on in the first place?
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: That's a good question.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Now I would, and I'll tell you why.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: You charge?
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: No, uh not at all.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: But I have a weird You wouldn't?
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: No, I hear this out.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: So this is kind of a funny situation.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: So uh I pick up Gavin every day, and this is his uh our neighbors across the street who we're you know, we're we're we're pretty tight with.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: They're good, you know, good people.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: We Kellyan something Kelly and Jason.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: Kellyan something.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Wow, sorry something.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Sorry about that something.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: I couldn't remember his name.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: So Kellyan Jason, that's right.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: It's Will's first year at uh Gavin school, you know?
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: So but they live literally across the street.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: So I picked Gavin up, that'd be like uh and I just haven't made it across the street to be like, do you guys want him to ride the bus or do you just want me just to throw him in the car and drive the three-quarters of a mile home?
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm we're good.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: I would absolutely take it But I'm not gonna charge for it.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, my God, these two are they they usually Gavin ends up at their house every day playing video games with them anyway.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Like, then shouldn't you charge me for having my kids show up for that?
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, that that's a little extreme.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: So that's your that's your answer?
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: That's my answer why I wouldn't charge anything.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: I mean it's a back and a fourth and a fourth and a back.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: My answer is yes, charge.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: And the reason is she didn't.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: But you have a trip to New Orleans to pay for and you need that money.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: No, I'm kidding.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: She had said that there was uh a little trip that was 10 minutes.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the drop-off days.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: And then 10 minutes back.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: So let's say, and how many days did she say that was?
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: Is that three days, four?
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: I have the greatest answer for that part.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: But okay, so now that's 20 minutes of my day every day.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Ten minutes there, ten minutes back, 20 minutes.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: So 20 minutes a day, five, I'm gonna just let's do five days a week.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Five days a week.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Well, except for Tuesday, kid has to come back while your baby's sitting.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, four days a week.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: So now we're gonna include the uh now I'm putting it back in then.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Okay, five days a week, 20 minutes a day.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: So then now I'm thinking of how much is gas.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: So it's gas and time.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Now I would say that would be in in the tank world, that would probably be 40-50 bucks, right?
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, gas is 439 a gallon over at Karen's 711 today.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: So I am charging you 50 bucks for gas.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Now there's also the time factor, but you're right.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: As parents, we do need to scratch a little bit because I might need something from you later.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: That's right, yes.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: So I'm not gonna charge you for the time, but I'm charging you for the gas.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: So all she needs to say is based on gas alone and the time it takes, or I'm sorry, based on gas alone.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And she can even say, you know, the the 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, then 50 bucks.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: Here's my theory on this.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: I think she's gonna get sick of this for two reasons.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: One, okay, so for me, I wouldn't get sick of dropping Will off because I drive past their house to pull in my driveway.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: And I'm not gonna charge them to say, I'll drop will.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: That would be absurd.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: But if you were driving 10 minutes and 10 minutes, I'll tell you how to handle that.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: I have the best way to handle it because what she's not doing is she's not realizing she's gonna get sick of it.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Because especially on the Tuesdays when you've got to keep the kid around for an extra three, four hours and they're eating your snack.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: If your kids suddenly get into some little tussle and they're not best of friends for a little while, then you gotta endure that.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Now I have to say no.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: If I say no, no, that's not what I'm telling you to do.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: I have the feature thing.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna give you you want some passive aggressive suggestions, I got it.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: I well no, you you can't I don't think you can be passive aggressive unless no, you're not.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Listen to my theory.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: You leave it, if you're the person picking the person picking the kids up and dropping off, you don't lay a number out.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: You say, here's what I'll do.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: I will I will do this.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: However, if my life ends up getting to the point that I have to schedule different things, like I might have appointments or things like that, you're going to have to make other arrangements.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Like, say, for instance, her kid had to go to the ortho after school.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: You're not going to take the other person's kid with you.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: You have to make other arrangements.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: And here's how we'll deal with this.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: I'm not comfortable being friends with you saying a dollar amount.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Why don't you get me a gas card every week?
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: And then now don't say a number on the gas card.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: And here's why.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: If she gets you a$10,$20 gas card, she's taking advantage of you.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: If she gets you a legit$40,$50 gas card, maybe I don't know, is that a lot every week, or should it be every other week that it's that much?
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: $40,$50 every week.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: If she does that, I'm driving your kid's little booty around every week.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Then it's of value to the other parent, and you can go, okay, I see that this is not just trying to use me for a$10 gas card in my time.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: What are you going to do when it's only$10?
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Are you going to come back and be like, that's not enough?
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: No, that's when you say, listen, Timmy decided he wants to play soccer every single day, and or we're or gymnastics, or we're going to do this, or I have a lot.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: You find your way out.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but Timmy's gonna spill the beans that he's not playing soccer.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Other things come up.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: You know, there's a way out of this.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: No, I say, I say just lay the money down now so you're not disappointed financially.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Find out what it's really worth from the other person.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: They're gonna prove their value.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: And now that I'm thinking about it even more,$50 just for the gas.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: You're right.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: I am gonna get sick of it.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: And for me getting sick of it, I want more.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: So now I want$75 at least.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: And you're gonna say that to a friend.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: This is your friend.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: So and you break it down$70 or$50 for gas, the rest is for I wanna I wanna lay this out.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: This would be like you telling Sonia.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Well, see, that's different.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: You could just negotiate a free butthole waxing.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: Uh but uh in this case, that's a perk.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: But but this would be like doing this with Sonia versus your dog walker who's just associated with you as a service.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Then what you say is my suggestion is at minimum fifty and see if they come back with more.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: See, I like playing with people a little bit differently.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: I like saying, why don't you give me a gas card each week?
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: That'll cover the cost of me having to do the transport.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: And if they if they legit do the forty, fifty dollars, you know it's of value to them.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: If they do ten dollars, twenty dollars, basically they're trying to take advantage and get a cheaper way out of this and not have to pay for a big sitter later.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: Uh there's a ton of messages.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: We'll get there next.
