Latest / Michelle Explains Anime, Poorly / Banana Fish Manga- Angel Eyes
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person, Michelle. I guess back to do
- 0:04Speaker 1: another Banana Fish episode. Even though we've covered the entire anime,
- 0:08Speaker 1: we still have three to go, including this one where
- 0:12Speaker 1: we're discussing parts of the manga that we're not adapted,
- 0:16Speaker 1: like the afterwards, the kind of epilogue. But some of
- 0:21Speaker 1: this comes before Banana Fish, like this one today, So
- 0:24Speaker 1: if you're interested, this would be right after the main
- 0:28Speaker 1: story in volume nineteen of Banana Fish. And it's called
- 0:31Speaker 1: angel Eyes. And uh, I have to read this directly
- 0:35Speaker 1: off of the internet, so I'm not one hundred percent
- 0:38Speaker 1: sure how this is gonna go, but I'm gonna try
- 0:40Speaker 1: really hard because I think that's it would be bad
- 0:44Speaker 1: if I didn't try hard. I don't know, but I'm
- 0:47Speaker 1: a little bit stressed out right now, so I'm sorry
- 0:49Speaker 1: if I'm a little bit frazzled sounding anyway. So Angelies,
- 0:55Speaker 1: I mean obviously takes place in the past. First page
- 0:58Speaker 1: we have, it's the cover. It says angel Eyes at
- 1:01Speaker 1: the top looks like a piece of tape is taped
- 1:03Speaker 1: over the picture with angel Eyes on it, and we
- 1:06Speaker 1: see like a building, but we can't see what it's
- 1:09Speaker 1: called because that's where the Angel tape is, but in
- 1:12Speaker 1: front of the building, there is a like busted out
- 1:15Speaker 1: like van, you know, like one of those white vans,
- 1:19Speaker 1: like it doesn't have tires anymore at all, or wheels,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and it's graffitied all up. It says flying Banana on
- 1:25Speaker 1: it and in the East Village and then there's a
- 1:27Speaker 1: little cat drawing and it says tomcat cock okay, And
- 1:31Speaker 1: sitting on the van, like on the top of the
- 1:34Speaker 1: van is Ash, who looks quite a bit younger, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: then standing next to him is Shorter. And I don't
- 1:40Speaker 1: know if you remember me talking about this, but in
- 1:42Speaker 1: the manga, Shorter's head is almost always shaved. There's a
- 1:46Speaker 1: couple of scenes at the very beginning of Banana Fish
- 1:50Speaker 1: where he has a mohawk, but he shaves it off
- 1:52Speaker 1: pretty quickly, so he looks exactly like Shorter from the anime,
- 1:56Speaker 1: except he doesn't have any hair. He's also wearing a
- 1:59Speaker 1: shirt that says X on it for some reason, and
- 2:01Speaker 1: Ash has a short that says cat. I don't know
- 2:05Speaker 1: what was going on there anyway. That's what the cover
- 2:07Speaker 1: looks like. Moving along first panel, we see a it's
- 2:14Speaker 1: really hard to tell what's going on here, but I'm
- 2:16Speaker 1: pretty sure it's a really nice, fancy house. And there
- 2:20Speaker 1: is like lots and lots of vegetation around it, like
- 2:23Speaker 1: a big front yard maybe, and some like nicely shaped
- 2:29Speaker 1: hedges and things. I'd probably be able to tell you
- 2:32Speaker 1: more if this wasn't a scan, but that's okay. Then
- 2:35Speaker 1: we see a really close shot like of just the
- 2:38Speaker 1: kind of chest of Dino. He looks like he's reading
- 2:40Speaker 1: a newspaper. We really can't see much of it, and
- 2:43Speaker 1: Gregory is like coming up behind him, and he says, Papa,
- 2:46Speaker 1: I'm sorry to disturb you, sir, but we just heard
- 2:49Speaker 1: and then he like leans over and like whispers something
- 2:52Speaker 1: to Dino, but we don't hear what it is. It
- 2:53Speaker 1: just has like that thought, like an a lips thing,
- 2:56Speaker 1: and then he'd be cut back in and Gregory says,
- 2:59Speaker 1: shall I go over there and secures release. Dino is
- 3:02Speaker 1: holding a cigar and he says, that little fool, I
- 3:04Speaker 1: thought I hadn't seen him around in a while, so
- 3:06Speaker 1: that's what he's been up to. He takes a drag
- 3:09Speaker 1: of the cigar. He continues, leave him there, let him
- 3:13Speaker 1: learn his lesson, and Gregory's like, but, sir, if we
- 3:15Speaker 1: don't act now, he'll be sent to juvenile and Dino
- 3:18Speaker 1: cuts him off and is like, we can get him
- 3:19Speaker 1: out of there anytime we like. If a spell and
- 3:22Speaker 1: reform school is all it takes to crush him, we
- 3:24Speaker 1: might as well find out right now. What I'd rather
- 3:26Speaker 1: have you do for me is to obtain tickets for
- 3:28Speaker 1: Carnegie Hall on the eighteenth, and Gregory's like, Sir Dino continues,
- 3:33Speaker 1: sag Ozawa will be conducting the New York Philharmonic. We
- 3:37Speaker 1: now cut to outside of a juvenile correctional facility. We
- 3:41Speaker 1: can't see the whole title of it. It's like od Ford,
- 3:44Speaker 1: so I don't know what the rest of it is.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But I tried to look up all of the juvenile
- 3:48Speaker 1: correctional facilities in New York City and I couldn't find it,
- 3:51Speaker 1: so I don't think it's real. But that's okay anyway.
- 3:54Speaker 1: What we see is besides the sign is just tons
- 3:57Speaker 1: of just like a really high, like tall chain link
- 4:02Speaker 1: fence with what appears to be razor wire and barbed
- 4:05Speaker 1: wire kind of at the top together, so you really
- 4:08Speaker 1: don't want to try to get over it. And we
- 4:10Speaker 1: have written on the page it is obviously part of
- 4:14Speaker 1: a letter, and it says, dear sis, thank you for
- 4:17Speaker 1: the letter, and the snacks. Don't come visit me after all,
- 4:20Speaker 1: because it's a pretty rough place. I'll be out of
- 4:23Speaker 1: here in two months anyway. Now we see someone's knee.
- 4:27Speaker 1: They like have a pad of paper on it as
- 4:28Speaker 1: they're writing, and it continues, don't worry about me, I'm fine,
- 4:33Speaker 1: hope you're And then somebody says shorter, and it's Shorter.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Shorter looks up and he's like huh. And someone says
- 4:39Speaker 1: shorter long. Shorter like looks out of the cell and
- 4:43Speaker 1: he says, you call me. And there's a guard who
- 4:46Speaker 1: actually is the warden standing below, like I guess, there's
- 4:49Speaker 1: kind of a wide open area. So he's standing there
- 4:51Speaker 1: and he says, we got a new kid in block A.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Give me a hand, will you. Shorter's like, okay, just
- 4:56Speaker 1: a sec and he goes back to writing. PS. The
- 4:58Speaker 1: banana red was really good there. Oh, and I'm supposed
- 5:02Speaker 1: to tell you that there's just lots of pictures of
- 5:05Speaker 1: naked women on the wall behind Shorter. Freight shorter anyway,
- 5:09Speaker 1: So now we cut to them together standing at a
- 5:11Speaker 1: like a chain link gate or something, and the warden says,
- 5:16Speaker 1: we got a little problem, see, and Shorter is like, problem,
- 5:19Speaker 1: you can't handle him alone. The Warden's like, you'll see
- 5:22Speaker 1: when we get there. He opens the door to I
- 5:25Speaker 1: don't know whatever type of room this is and he says,
- 5:29Speaker 1: Ash links over here, kid. So before we go any further,
- 5:33Speaker 1: this is all from Shorter's perspective. So we have like
- 5:36Speaker 1: shorter narration, So this is part of the narration. Anyway,
- 5:40Speaker 1: we see Ash's body like he's wearing a hoodie and
- 5:44Speaker 1: like a striped shirt, but we really don't see his face,
- 5:47Speaker 1: kind of see his chin. It's like a weird cropped shot.
- 5:51Speaker 1: And the Shorter narration at least goes. The kid stared
- 5:55Speaker 1: straight at us for at least ten seconds, then came
- 5:58Speaker 1: over real slow. He was about three yards away and
- 6:01Speaker 1: stopped there. He can deal with anything that came down.
- 6:05Speaker 1: That was the first time I saw Ash. So Shorter
- 6:08Speaker 1: is like looking at him now obviously, and it continues.
- 6:11Speaker 1: He had thin arms and legs, a skinny little boy.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Then we see Ash's face. He's just kind of blank, expressionless,
- 6:20Speaker 1: and it continues, and on top of his slender neck
- 6:24Speaker 1: was a face so beautiful it was scary. Geez. Shorter,
- 6:27Speaker 1: now I got what the warden was talking about, and
- 6:30Speaker 1: he says yo, and Ash does not say anything. So
- 6:35Speaker 1: Shorter takes the warden aside and he's like, can I
- 6:37Speaker 1: talk to you for a sec. And the Warden's like, huh,
- 6:40Speaker 1: they're still in the room. By the way. Shorter says,
- 6:42Speaker 1: that ain't a little problem. Man. You don't come up
- 6:44Speaker 1: with some excuse to put him in the hospital block,
- 6:46Speaker 1: he's gonna be And the warden says hospital block's full
- 6:50Speaker 1: with due to her messed up for real. Shorter says, okay,
- 6:54Speaker 1: but you know what's gonna happen to that kid if
- 6:55Speaker 1: you put him in here with everyone else, don't you.
- 6:58Speaker 1: It's like throwing a rabbit to the wolves, and you
- 7:00Speaker 1: know it. The warden says, that's why I want to
- 7:02Speaker 1: put him in Block A with you. You got things
- 7:05Speaker 1: under control over there, so the way I figured it,
- 7:07Speaker 1: as long as you keep a lid on things, he'll
- 7:09Speaker 1: be fine. Shorter's like, hang on a minute, you saying,
- 7:13Speaker 1: I gotta watch this bunny. Rabbits ask twenty four hours
- 7:15Speaker 1: a day. The warden, who is pretty nonplussed about all
- 7:18Speaker 1: of this, says, look, someone wants a pet bunny. I
- 7:22Speaker 1: don't need to know about it. Just make sure he
- 7:24Speaker 1: don't turn into roadkill. Okay, fuck dude. Shorter, who is
- 7:28Speaker 1: sweating now, says, so I do gotta watch his ass
- 7:30Speaker 1: all the time. The warden says, you want to get
- 7:34Speaker 1: out in two months, you'll help me out. Shorter doesn't
- 7:36Speaker 1: say anything, but he's very upset. He is like comically
- 7:40Speaker 1: crying and you know, getting angry and stuff, and the
- 7:44Speaker 1: warden continues, Look, I can't have any kids dying in here,
- 7:47Speaker 1: all right. Shorter looks back over at Ass. She was
- 7:50Speaker 1: just kind of standing looking around, not really paying attention
- 7:53Speaker 1: to them, but I'm pretty sure he can hear them.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And he says, what do you do to get sent
- 7:58Speaker 1: up here? Anyway? He a pickpot or something? Child prostitute maybe,
- 8:03Speaker 1: And the warden says murder. Shorter looks back, huh. The
- 8:07Speaker 1: Warden's like he did four people, is what I heard.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Shorter kind of stares at Ash. He thinks, this little kid. Now.
- 8:15Speaker 1: We cut to Shorter and Ash walking down a hallway
- 8:18Speaker 1: and everybody is looking at them. Ash is real short,
- 8:22Speaker 1: and Shorter is as tall as Shorter was. I guess
- 8:25Speaker 1: the anime. He's tall. I actually wonder how old he
- 8:28Speaker 1: is here, because he just looks like an adult. But whatever. Anyway,
- 8:32Speaker 1: they're walking together and Shorter is thinking, four people, that's
- 8:36Speaker 1: more than me, man, she's shorter. He looks over and
- 8:40Speaker 1: notices Ash is carrying a book that I can't see
- 8:42Speaker 1: what the title of the book is. I don't actually
- 8:44Speaker 1: think anything's really written there, and he says that book
- 8:47Speaker 1: all you got with you? You should travel light. Ash
- 8:50Speaker 1: looks over and just scowls at him, and Shorter thinks
- 8:54Speaker 1: she sh real friendly. Now they are walking around and
- 8:57Speaker 1: Shorter is like showing him places and the place does
- 9:00Speaker 1: not look nice, like it's super like beat up and old,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and there's graffiti that says have fun on the wall
- 9:05Speaker 1: for some reason, which I don't think is something you
- 9:07Speaker 1: have in juvenile attention, but I don't really know. Anyway,
- 9:10Speaker 1: Shorter is like, there's the wreck room in there, which
- 9:13Speaker 1: basically just means a gym, and showers, I'll show you
- 9:15Speaker 1: the workshop and live. Very later, we get narration here
- 9:18Speaker 1: that says he was supposed to be fifteen, but he
- 9:21Speaker 1: didn't look close to it. His neck and wrists were
- 9:23Speaker 1: so puny you could stab him in two Rather than
- 9:26Speaker 1: a pretty boy, he looked like a beautiful boyish girl. Geez,
- 9:30Speaker 1: he is very androgynous looking. But anyway, some guys are
- 9:35Speaker 1: staring at them, and one of them goes, yo, Shorter,
- 9:37Speaker 1: who's that new kid on the block, And the other
- 9:39Speaker 1: one says, boy, he is fine, Hey baby, you want
- 9:42Speaker 1: to be friends? Oh my god, leave him alone. Shorter's like, layoff, dudes,
- 9:48Speaker 1: don't be getting any ideas. Leave the kid alone. Hear me.
- 9:51Speaker 1: One of the guys like whistles, and we get some
- 9:54Speaker 1: narration that says easy to say, harder to enforce. Shorter thinks, man,
- 9:59Speaker 1: it's gonna be a long two months. And they continue
- 10:02Speaker 1: to walk as somebody whistles and Ash again. They get
- 10:05Speaker 1: to probably the cafeteria, I assume, which also has graffiti
- 10:09Speaker 1: on it, but I can't tell what it says. And
- 10:10Speaker 1: Shorter's like, here's the mess. Breakfasts at seven point thirty,
- 10:14Speaker 1: lunches at noon, and dinners at six. Don't ever chow
- 10:17Speaker 1: down fast without looking, because sometimes there's froaches in the food. Awesome,
- 10:21Speaker 1: got any questions? Ash stares at him and then says, yeah,
- 10:27Speaker 1: your hair, did it fall out or do you just
- 10:30Speaker 1: shave it off. Shorter looks confused for a second, and
- 10:33Speaker 1: then he says, right now, I'm growing it out. We
- 10:36Speaker 1: get some narration that says he finally opened his mouth.
- 10:39Speaker 1: His voice was husky, like it had just started changing,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and Shorter says, I got three little bald spots from
- 10:46Speaker 1: a fight. See, so I shaved it off, but I'm
- 10:48Speaker 1: growing it out now as of yesterday. Actually, Ash doesn't
- 10:51Speaker 1: say anything. We get some narration again that says, but
- 10:55Speaker 1: it was pretty obvious that he was tougher than he looked. Now. Ah,
- 10:58Speaker 1: we see kind of the floor of I guess they're
- 11:00Speaker 1: kind of sell which has graffiti on it, which is impressive,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and Shorter says, Tadah, we're here. They kind of walk inside,
- 11:07Speaker 1: and Shorter says, you take the lower bunk and that
- 11:09Speaker 1: desk over there. He points to a desk that we
- 11:11Speaker 1: can't see off screen, and he continues, So I'm your
- 11:14Speaker 1: roommate for the next two months name Shorter Wong. Ash
- 11:18Speaker 1: is surprised and he says, I'm with you. Shorter's like, yup,
- 11:22Speaker 1: uh huh. I'm supposed to look after you here, So
- 11:24Speaker 1: if he needed help with stuff or whatever, just shoot
- 11:28Speaker 1: Ash just kind of looks down at the ground. He
- 11:30Speaker 1: does not look impressed, something like shocked. Shorter and he's like, hey,
- 11:34Speaker 1: Ash is like what and he thinks when he glanced
- 11:37Speaker 1: down just then, I swear he looked kind of familiar.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And he says, I think, don't I know you from somewhere?
- 11:43Speaker 1: Ash is like, how would I know? He sits down
- 11:46Speaker 1: on the bed. I never met you before. Anyway, i'd
- 11:48Speaker 1: remember that marblehead. Shorter thinks, marble head, that's really cruel.
- 11:54Speaker 1: No one's ever said anything mean about my hair before.
- 11:57Speaker 1: That kid's a total brad. He's pretty upset. He's like
- 12:00Speaker 1: she went on his hand and like crying his Ash
- 12:01Speaker 1: just sits there and begins to read. We cut to
- 12:04Speaker 1: like a tray, like a cafeteria tray, with what I'm
- 12:07Speaker 1: pretty sure is milk on it, and then maybe like
- 12:09Speaker 1: a salad and then some other nondescript foods. Who knows though, really,
- 12:14Speaker 1: and someone is saying, what the heck is this puke?
- 12:17Speaker 1: It's just some dude, and he continues, this crap ain't
- 12:19Speaker 1: fit for human consumption. Man Shorter is standing nearby and
- 12:23Speaker 1: he says, bet the food budget went up. Someone's nose
- 12:25Speaker 1: is what happens, so they got to serve us this
- 12:27Speaker 1: puppy chow. I wonder how accurate this translation is because
- 12:30Speaker 1: it's like super fun. But like I wonder if the
- 12:34Speaker 1: Japanese is a lot more like stilted. And do we
- 12:36Speaker 1: really make a drug reference there? I don't really know,
- 12:38Speaker 1: but I like it anyway. Shorter looks over and he
- 12:41Speaker 1: sees Ash walking by, and he says, Ash over here
- 12:44Speaker 1: we get some narration now. Ash begins to walk over
- 12:46Speaker 1: and it goes so far, so good. Anyway, at least
- 12:49Speaker 1: he got through his first week. Okay, he was cool
- 12:51Speaker 1: as ice in the shower room when guys were eyeing
- 12:54Speaker 1: him up like a strip show act and calling him
- 12:55Speaker 1: some pretty rude names. Ash sits down, never even cracked
- 12:59Speaker 1: a smile, showed any fear. He starts to drink some milk.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Guys are looking at him. He looks really blank, just
- 13:06Speaker 1: ignored it, like it didn't mean a thing. Made you
- 13:09Speaker 1: wonder if he had any feelings at all. Fuck. Ash
- 13:11Speaker 1: kind of looks down and Shorter is staring at him,
- 13:15Speaker 1: and he thinks about what the warden said he did
- 13:17Speaker 1: four people is what I heard back to the narration.
- 13:19Speaker 1: He sure didn't look like it, not the least bit
- 13:23Speaker 1: that clear, pale skin and that ash blonde hair, those
- 13:26Speaker 1: determined looking lips. It's too much shorter and under those
- 13:30Speaker 1: arched eyebrows. What you notice the most about the kid,
- 13:33Speaker 1: those jade green eyes. He is still staring Ash, and
- 13:37Speaker 1: he thinks she looks more like a movie star than
- 13:39Speaker 1: a killer. I mean, damn, I sure is helling, no
- 13:42Speaker 1: pansy butt. This kid's so beautiful. Geez Shorter, stop, it's
- 13:46Speaker 1: freaking me out. I couldn't stop staring at him still.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I could have sworn i'd seen him somewhere before. Someone
- 13:52Speaker 1: comes up from behind it. We don't see who they are,
- 13:54Speaker 1: and they slap Ash on the back and they say, yo,
- 13:57Speaker 1: Ash looks startled. It is a dude with like kind
- 14:02Speaker 1: of a mohawk, and also he's got like a little ponytail,
- 14:05Speaker 1: and he's got like a mustache as well. He looks
- 14:09Speaker 1: like he's an older kid. He puts his hand on
- 14:12Speaker 1: shoulder and he says, enjoying reform school, pretty boy, hang
- 14:16Speaker 1: with me and you'll like it even better. Baby Shorter thinks, uh, oh, damn,
- 14:20Speaker 1: it here comes. I knew it was gonna happen sooner
- 14:23Speaker 1: or later, but I sure wasn't looking forward to it.
- 14:25Speaker 1: He says, hey, Ricardo, leave that kid alone, will you?
- 14:29Speaker 1: He's like a kid? Okay, not to mention, you're off
- 14:33Speaker 1: your home turf. Ricardo grabs Ash by the chin because
- 14:36Speaker 1: everyone does that, and he makes some kissing noises and says, oh,
- 14:40Speaker 1: come on, what's wrong with being a little friendly? Huh?
- 14:43Speaker 1: And Shorter is like Ricardo. Someone out of the panel says, hey,
- 14:47Speaker 1: Dick Hardo, which I guess is his fun nickname. And
- 14:49Speaker 1: Ricardo looks over and there are three dudes with shaved
- 14:53Speaker 1: heads walking over. The one at the front looks like
- 14:56Speaker 1: he's in his late twenties, really, but I guess he's
- 14:58Speaker 1: probably just seventeen. Anyway. He says, get your dirty hands
- 15:03Speaker 1: off my property's scumbag, and Ricardo's like, what you say,
- 15:07Speaker 1: your property? Cup bron Since when you got rights to
- 15:10Speaker 1: this bitch? Geez? Ash is not paying attention, by the way,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and the other guy says, since right now? So they
- 15:17Speaker 1: often get out of here, scram asshole. Ricardo says, you
- 15:20Speaker 1: want to make me, Oh god, guys, don't fight over Ash.
- 15:23Speaker 1: This is weird. Shorter says, both of you just cut
- 15:27Speaker 1: it out. Thank god. Ricardo turns back and says, this
- 15:30Speaker 1: has got nothing to do with you, Wong, and Shorter's like,
- 15:33Speaker 1: oh geah, it does. I'm sitting here trying to eat.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I can't do that with you dudes in my face.
- 15:38Speaker 1: So if you're so hell bent on duking it out
- 15:40Speaker 1: in here, you can duke it out with me. Frankie. Frankie,
- 15:43Speaker 1: who's the other guy, is shocked. Everyone's looking over now
- 15:47Speaker 1: to see what happens, except for Ash, who has just
- 15:50Speaker 1: gotten up and has started to walk away, and no
- 15:54Speaker 1: one notices except this one guy who's like, uh hey,
- 15:56Speaker 1: but Ash doesn't turn around. So Frankie, Ricardo, and Shorter
- 16:02Speaker 1: are all kind of standing looking at each other, and
- 16:05Speaker 1: Frankie says, all right, all right, chill out, Shorter, I
- 16:07Speaker 1: ain't got no beef with you. Shorter turns to Ricardo
- 16:10Speaker 1: and he's like, cool, let's all chill out. That means
- 16:13Speaker 1: get your ass back to block be Ricardo. Ricardo's like humm,
- 16:17Speaker 1: and then we get some narration that just says, geeze man,
- 16:20Speaker 1: just what I needed. Now that that's taking care of.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Shorter looks around and he's like, ah, hey, where's Ash?
- 16:25Speaker 1: And the guy that actually saw Ashleeve said got up
- 16:28Speaker 1: and left a while ago. Shorter's like what. The guy continues,
- 16:32Speaker 1: I know, man, he just walked out like he got
- 16:34Speaker 1: nothing to do with it. I mean, she sh they
- 16:36Speaker 1: only fighting over the rights to his ass. Shorter has
- 16:39Speaker 1: his hand on his head and he's like, what the
- 16:41Speaker 1: fuck is going on? And this other guy who's standing
- 16:45Speaker 1: there says, I don't know, man, kid kind of gives
- 16:47Speaker 1: me the creeps. Shorter looks up. The guy continues, those
- 16:50Speaker 1: green eyes, man, I swear he got the evil eye. Dudes.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Another guy who's sitting at the table just starts laughing,
- 16:56Speaker 1: and he's like, where the hell you get that from, Nico,
- 16:58Speaker 1: And what are we supposed to do about it? Where garlic?
- 17:01Speaker 1: Nico's like, my grandma told me about how when she
- 17:04Speaker 1: was little, back in her village, this beautiful, green eyed
- 17:07Speaker 1: woman showed up one day. We now see the beautiful
- 17:10Speaker 1: woman who she's pretty. Thankfully she doesn't look anything like
- 17:13Speaker 1: ash Good anyway, Nico continues, all the men in the
- 17:17Speaker 1: village went nuts over her, right, and then they started
- 17:20Speaker 1: killing each other to get her. And when every last
- 17:23Speaker 1: man in the village was dead, there was a storm,
- 17:26Speaker 1: and this woman she stood in the rain, laughing, and
- 17:30Speaker 1: her eyes were in green no more, they turned blood red.
- 17:34Speaker 1: She was the devil. See that kid, Ash, he got
- 17:39Speaker 1: the devil's eyes. Geez, guys, I guess this is later.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Ash is reading under a tree kind of in the shade,
- 17:46Speaker 1: and Shorter comes up and he says, yo, man, you
- 17:49Speaker 1: sure read a lot. We get some narration here that says,
- 17:52Speaker 1: my instincts told me to stay clear of him. Shorter continues,
- 17:55Speaker 1: it's like all you do all day. Shorter, like I guess,
- 17:59Speaker 1: kind of takes the book from him, not in a
- 18:01Speaker 1: rude way, and says, that's the book you had when
- 18:03Speaker 1: you got here, right, geez, how many times you read
- 18:05Speaker 1: this thing? He looks at it island's in the stream. Hmm.
- 18:09Speaker 1: So you like hemingway huh. Narration continues, But for some
- 18:13Speaker 1: reason I'd go look for him all the time. It
- 18:15Speaker 1: was the eyes. I'm sure i'd seen those eyes somewhere before.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Ash says, not really. So what's the deal? You the
- 18:24Speaker 1: big man around here? Shorter says hm. Ash continues, you
- 18:28Speaker 1: head of the ball de Brigade and that other marble heads,
- 18:30Speaker 1: a follower of yours. Shorter is like, say, what you
- 18:33Speaker 1: talking about? Frankie, give me a break. Those guys are skinheads. Okay,
- 18:36Speaker 1: I just shaved my head, that's all. Okay. Ash says,
- 18:40Speaker 1: neither the skinhead or the dickhead tried to mess with you.
- 18:43Speaker 1: You must be real strong. Shorter sits down next to Ash.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Not all that strong. Actually, when I first entered the joint,
- 18:52Speaker 1: Frankie tried to make me his bitch. See well, I
- 18:55Speaker 1: sure as hell wasn't into that, so I was fighting
- 18:58Speaker 1: him off and I won. I'll hair then, but I
- 19:01Speaker 1: ain't exactly beauty contest material like you are. Oh, I
- 19:04Speaker 1: think you're beautiful. Shorter must be pretty tough. Well, lock
- 19:07Speaker 1: up a bunch of dudes together without any women, and
- 19:10Speaker 1: I guess it's just natural. He doesn't say that, though,
- 19:14Speaker 1: but he thinks it. Ash is like, no. Shorter looks
- 19:19Speaker 1: at him, kind of confused. Ash continues, The reason those
- 19:23Speaker 1: guys rate people has nothing to do with wanting to
- 19:25Speaker 1: get laid. They just want to hurt people. They just
- 19:28Speaker 1: want power, somebody to step on. We get some narration here.
- 19:31Speaker 1: It says it was because of those eyes that I
- 19:34Speaker 1: ignored what my instincts told me and hung out with
- 19:36Speaker 1: him as if he were a weary straight cat, and
- 19:39Speaker 1: I was trying to get him to let me pet him.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Ash continues, the Week finds someone even weaker than they
- 19:44Speaker 1: are and hurt them. Guess it just means on bottom
- 19:46Speaker 1: of the food chain. He kind of smirks, because that's
- 19:50Speaker 1: what he does. Shorter looks like a little bit confused.
- 19:54Speaker 1: He kind of looks away and says, well, if you
- 19:57Speaker 1: know all that, I guess I don't need to tell
- 20:00Speaker 1: you this, but don't say it. Shorter, Please watch your back.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Both Ricardo and Frankie are after you. If they actually
- 20:09Speaker 1: get you, you're finished. No one can save you, me
- 20:12Speaker 1: included really Shorter here, the Week don't stand a chance,
- 20:16Speaker 1: and the only person who'll protect you is yourself. So
- 20:19Speaker 1: make sure you don't go any place dark and deserted.
- 20:22Speaker 1: But if you do have bad luck and get caught,
- 20:26Speaker 1: we get a bit of narration here. I couldn't believe
- 20:28Speaker 1: what I was saying back to Shorter. The less you resist,
- 20:31Speaker 1: the sooner it's over. And keep as quiet as you can,
- 20:34Speaker 1: because if you make a lot of noise, that just
- 20:37Speaker 1: eggs him on. And I'll go on for that much longer.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Sure it was for his own survival, but I was
- 20:43Speaker 1: telling him to let them rape him. Ash just stares
- 20:47Speaker 1: and he stands up. He says, thanks for the advice,
- 20:50Speaker 1: I'll be sure to keep it in mind. And then
- 20:53Speaker 1: we get some narration. But as I said, if you
- 20:57Speaker 1: won't or can't help me, keep your big mouth gently
- 21:00Speaker 1: alone for real. Shorter Ash walks off. There's some more narration,
- 21:05Speaker 1: and I knew that he must have gone through it
- 21:08Speaker 1: all before lots of times. Fuck yeah, So I'm just
- 21:14Speaker 1: gonna pause here for a second, so I can't even
- 21:17Speaker 1: imagine how much that must have pissed off Ash, like
- 21:21Speaker 1: so much and hurt him, because it seems like up
- 21:26Speaker 1: until this point, Shorter is on his side and wants
- 21:29Speaker 1: to help. He just diffuse the whole big conflict between
- 21:32Speaker 1: Frankie and Ricardo. But he's basically telling him that if
- 21:36Speaker 1: it comes down to it, he can't help him. And
- 21:38Speaker 1: then he's giving him advice on a topic that he
- 21:41Speaker 1: knows way more about than probably almost anyone. And it's
- 21:46Speaker 1: not like it's bad advice, but it's terrible advice. It's
- 21:49Speaker 1: not something you want to tell somebody, and it's not
- 21:51Speaker 1: something Ash is gonna want to hear, Like he doesn't
- 21:54Speaker 1: fucking know anyway, it like hurt me a whole lot.
- 21:59Speaker 1: So let's continue. So we cut to a room where
- 22:02Speaker 1: like lots of kids are hanging out. There's like card
- 22:06Speaker 1: game happening and people are just like playing some sort
- 22:10Speaker 1: of board game maybe, and there's pool and stuff. I
- 22:12Speaker 1: think this is the wreck room, and there's some narration
- 22:14Speaker 1: here and it goes I guess you couldn't blame him
- 22:17Speaker 1: for not trusting people are letting anybody get close. We
- 22:20Speaker 1: see Shorter at a desk in what I believe is
- 22:22Speaker 1: the library reading. There's some fun graffiti of like a
- 22:26Speaker 1: skull and cross phones on the wall some other stuff,
- 22:30Speaker 1: and there's a rumble of thunder. Shorter looks up and thinks,
- 22:34Speaker 1: sounds like a storm's brwin. There are some more rumbles
- 22:38Speaker 1: of thunder. At this point, someone like shoves open the
- 22:41Speaker 1: door and he's like, hey, Shorter, come quick. Shorter looks up.
- 22:45Speaker 1: There's a strike of lightning and another rumble of thunder.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Shorter takes off and he's like where and the guy
- 22:50Speaker 1: follows him and he's like the wreck room. Uh oh.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Frankie and Ricardo are fighting over that kid. Fuck and
- 22:56Speaker 1: Riccardo brought a bunch of guys from Block B with him.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Shorter and the other guy get to the reck room
- 23:01Speaker 1: and there's just this whole crowd of dudes there and
- 23:03Speaker 1: they're like cheering on this fight and they're like, oh, yeah,
- 23:07Speaker 1: I get him good, all right, Frankie, Yeah, man right
- 23:10Speaker 1: in the mouth. Come on, Frankie, don't let no block
- 23:13Speaker 1: be asshole beat you on your own turf. Shorter looks
- 23:16Speaker 1: over and he sees that in the crowd of all
- 23:19Speaker 1: these people, there's like three guys holding Ash, Like one
- 23:23Speaker 1: of them has his hand over Ash's mouth and they're
- 23:25Speaker 1: like holding his arms so he can't move and he
- 23:28Speaker 1: obviously looks like he's struggling. At this point, Ricardo is
- 23:32Speaker 1: tossed to the ground. It looks like he's been hitting
- 23:34Speaker 1: the face and it kind of hits the wall and
- 23:36Speaker 1: Shorter says, cut it out, both of you. They look
- 23:39Speaker 1: over it. Shorter he walks up and he says, the
- 23:43Speaker 1: hell are you doing? I told you due to lay
- 23:45Speaker 1: off each other. Frankie's like, stay out of this, Wong.
- 23:48Speaker 1: We ain't gonna kill each other, so what's it to you.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Ricardo spits some blood, probably and says, yeah, we're just
- 23:54Speaker 1: getting a little exercise here in the reck room, all right,
- 23:57Speaker 1: and the crowd is getting annoyed and they're telling Shorter
- 23:59Speaker 1: to like butt out out, and they're like they want
- 24:01Speaker 1: to beat the crap out of each other. Let him man,
- 24:03Speaker 1: and stuff like that, and Shorter says, let the kid go.
- 24:06Speaker 1: If he's worth so much to you, how about treating
- 24:08Speaker 1: him like it. They actually let Ash go at this point.
- 24:12Speaker 1: He doesn't leave, but they stop, you know, restraining him,
- 24:15Speaker 1: and we get a close shot of Ash who looks
- 24:18Speaker 1: totally nonplussed, like he is unfazed. He's like, not really here,
- 24:23Speaker 1: and we get some narration goes such cold eyes. They
- 24:26Speaker 1: were totally expressionless, like he couldn't care less. It's hard, Shorter,
- 24:31Speaker 1: It's real hard. Shorter comes to as someone's like, yeah, Frankie,
- 24:35Speaker 1: and someone else is like, you the man, and we
- 24:37Speaker 1: see that Ricardo is on the ground again and Frankie
- 24:41Speaker 1: is one and everyone's talking and stuff, and Frankie turns
- 24:45Speaker 1: to Ash and he says, get your grass over here, bitch.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Ash doesn't move, and thunder rumbles in the background. He
- 24:54Speaker 1: says Shorter. Shorter's like, yeah, Ash continues, if I fight
- 24:59Speaker 1: him in win, I don't have to be his bitch.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Everyone is stunned, and some kids like what he just say.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Frankie's like huh. One of the guys is like this
- 25:09Speaker 1: ought to be real, good dudes. Someone else starts laughing,
- 25:12Speaker 1: and Shorter thinks what the hell was he thinking. This
- 25:15Speaker 1: other guy says, yo, Frankie, he wants to throw some
- 25:17Speaker 1: punches at you. Dude. Yeah, man, you gotta let him
- 25:20Speaker 1: defend his honor, says some other guy. And then one
- 25:23Speaker 1: other dude is like, you cool with this Shorter because
- 25:25Speaker 1: this could turn into a gang bang that fast. Man.
- 25:28Speaker 1: I assume they need violence and not sex, but I
- 25:31Speaker 1: don't know. And Shorter looks stressed and he's like sweating,
- 25:35Speaker 1: and we get some narration here that goes to this day.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I don't know why I didn't stop the fight, one
- 25:40Speaker 1: of the guys says Shorter, And now like everyone's yelling again,
- 25:44Speaker 1: and some dude's like, let's even up the odds a little.
- 25:47Speaker 1: And someone else is like, yeah, kid needs a weapon.
- 25:50Speaker 1: And this dude has a pool cue and he says, here, kid,
- 25:54Speaker 1: use this, and he tosses it on the ground and
- 25:56Speaker 1: it rolls to Ash's feet. Nash picks it up, now
- 26:00Speaker 1: goes The pool que they tossed to him was obviously
- 26:02Speaker 1: a joke, but he simply picked it up. Poker faced.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Frankie says, all right, kid, come on, I'm ready whenever
- 26:08Speaker 1: you are, baby, come on. Shorter is watching, and we
- 26:12Speaker 1: get some narration that says I had just opened my
- 26:15Speaker 1: mouth to stop them, after all, when something made the
- 26:17Speaker 1: word stick in my throat. It was just one second,
- 26:21Speaker 1: no even less than that, but I swear his body
- 26:24Speaker 1: emitted flashes of white light which surrounded him like a halo.
- 26:28Speaker 1: His intensity was scary. Ash certainly looks very intense here.
- 26:32Speaker 1: There's some kind of like lightning coming off of him,
- 26:35Speaker 1: which I'm sure is not really happening, because I don't
- 26:38Speaker 1: think it ever happened again, But he does look like
- 26:41Speaker 1: he's gonna fucking kill this dude like a lot. Frankie's like,
- 26:45Speaker 1: what are you waiting for? If you don't make the
- 26:47Speaker 1: first move, kid, I will, Ash scowls, and there's a
- 26:52Speaker 1: lightning strike, I think, and Shorter just looks on as
- 26:55Speaker 1: Ash runs at Frankie with the fucking pool cue, and
- 27:00Speaker 1: he's like going right for his chest while Frankie just
- 27:03Speaker 1: doesn't even know what to do, and Shorter thinks, holy crap,
- 27:06Speaker 1: and he yells stop. Ash is caught off guard a
- 27:10Speaker 1: little bit and he kind of like loses his focus
- 27:13Speaker 1: and he does hit Frankie with a pool cue, but
- 27:15Speaker 1: it like kind of off center a little bit and
- 27:17Speaker 1: it cracks and like flies back in his face. But
- 27:20Speaker 1: it definitely hurts Frankie because he says unk or something
- 27:23Speaker 1: and he's like coughing and stuff. As Ash stands there
- 27:26Speaker 1: kind of thrown off about what just happens. And then
- 27:29Speaker 1: Ash just starts to walk off, and Frankie's like, hey,
- 27:33Speaker 1: come back here, you little and Shorter says, drop it,
- 27:35Speaker 1: Frankie and he stops Frankie like he grabs him by
- 27:39Speaker 1: the shoulder so he can't go after Ash. And Frankie's like,
- 27:41Speaker 1: get back here, and Shorter says, I said just drop it.
- 27:44Speaker 1: You're damn lucky you're still alive. And Frankie's like, what
- 27:47Speaker 1: are you talking about? You crazy or something? Jeez, was
- 27:50Speaker 1: this guy a pain in my neck? He just kind
- 27:53Speaker 1: of like elbows Frankie in the neck and Frankie goes down. Yay.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Everyone is surprised, and he runs off after Ash and
- 28:01Speaker 1: he's like Ash wat up Ash. He is running down
- 28:04Speaker 1: the hallway trying to catch up with Ash, and he's thinking,
- 28:07Speaker 1: poor little bunny rabbit. That kid was serious. He was
- 28:10Speaker 1: seriously about to kill Frankie. If the que hadn't shifted
- 28:13Speaker 1: to the side by a quarter of an inch or
- 28:15Speaker 1: so at the very last second like that, Frankie would
- 28:18Speaker 1: have died instantly, his heart crushed like a paper cup.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Shorter leans against the wall to catch his breath and
- 28:25Speaker 1: thinks he sure didn't learn how to do that in
- 28:27Speaker 1: a day or two. He must have received some kind
- 28:29Speaker 1: of special training. Yes, what the hell was that kid?
- 28:33Speaker 1: He sees Ash walking out the door and he's like Ash.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Ash stops and Shorter says, that freaked me out for real. Hey,
- 28:41Speaker 1: thanks for deciding to go easy on him. Ash starts
- 28:45Speaker 1: to chuckle, and Shorter is confused. Ash says, I ought
- 28:50Speaker 1: to thank you, Shorter Wong. Shorter is so confused now,
- 28:54Speaker 1: and Ash is like, so that's it deflected slightly At
- 28:57Speaker 1: the last second. He turns to Shorter, I didn't decide
- 29:01Speaker 1: to go easy on him, but now I finally know how.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Oh God, thanks to you, and he continues to chuckle.
- 29:09Speaker 1: We get some narration. Here goes that was the first
- 29:13Speaker 1: time in my life that someone really terrified me. My
- 29:17Speaker 1: whole body was suddenly covered with a cold sweat, even
- 29:21Speaker 1: though it was the middle of summer. That kid was
- 29:23Speaker 1: something else in the scariest kind of way. Some dude
- 29:26Speaker 1: is like standing by the wall and he's like, Shorter,
- 29:28Speaker 1: watch out man. Shorter looks over. Huh. He sits down
- 29:32Speaker 1: next to the dude, and the guy says that dude,
- 29:34Speaker 1: Arthur Man, where it is. There's somebody in here that
- 29:37Speaker 1: he went off real bad people saying he might have
- 29:40Speaker 1: sent an assassin. Shorter's like, what come on, man, as
- 29:44Speaker 1: if he'd managed something that tricky. The guy's like, dude,
- 29:47Speaker 1: it's because Arthur's one tricky motherfucker. That jewy is joy
- 29:50Speaker 1: in the first place, charged with two counts of murder.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Shorter takes a sip of a beverage and says, hmmm,
- 29:56Speaker 1: you got a point there. The guy's like, I'm just saying,
- 29:59Speaker 1: watch your back is all because that asshole heats your
- 30:01Speaker 1: guts Short, like hmm. Another guy comes over. He is
- 30:05Speaker 1: like Short dreads and he's like, Shorter got a sack,
- 30:09Speaker 1: and then I guess we cut too. Slightly later, they're
- 30:12Speaker 1: on a bench now, him and the guy with the dreads,
- 30:14Speaker 1: and Shorter says Nico, ah, yes, the guy who's scared
- 30:17Speaker 1: of Ash. And so this other guy says, yeah, man,
- 30:20Speaker 1: he's totally losing it, going on about being stuck with
- 30:23Speaker 1: the devil and how we gotta let him move into
- 30:24Speaker 1: block be like for hours. Man Shorter like slumps over
- 30:28Speaker 1: and he has his head in his hands and he's like,
- 30:30Speaker 1: not that again. The guy says, he's talking about that
- 30:33Speaker 1: boy toy Ricardo and Frankie were fighting over right, man.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Nico just won't let up about blood colored eyes and
- 30:39Speaker 1: what his grandma saw and all this other crazy craft.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Shorter's like, his eyes are light green. They look breads
- 30:45Speaker 1: sometimes depending on the light. But there was a pretty
- 30:49Speaker 1: bad storm going on the day of the fights. I
- 30:51Speaker 1: bet it was just a flash of lightning, you know,
- 30:53Speaker 1: like when a camera gives people red eyes and a picture.
- 30:57Speaker 1: I already told Nico that, geez, let do and the
- 31:01Speaker 1: guy's like, well, all I can say is, dude's local. Man,
- 31:05Speaker 1: So I'm confused. So Ash's eyes just look red sometimes.
- 31:09Speaker 1: That's interesting. I like that it's being rationalized. I mean,
- 31:13Speaker 1: it's not like Ashes demon, So I guess you do
- 31:16Speaker 1: need to rationalize it, but it's a little bit weird anyway.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Shorter and this guy are like walking back from the
- 31:21Speaker 1: bench now, and the guy says, just what you need? Huh?
- 31:25Speaker 1: Ain't you about to be out of here pretty soon?
- 31:27Speaker 1: Shorter doesn't say anything. The guy continues, so, what you're
- 31:30Speaker 1: gonna go after Arthur? Once you're outside? They stop and
- 31:34Speaker 1: they turn because they see something and there's like someone.
- 31:37Speaker 1: They're like, hey, hey or something, and someone else or
- 31:40Speaker 1: the same person says, well, sure thing, baby, it is
- 31:44Speaker 1: Ash and Ricardo. Yeah. So Ash is sitting on something
- 31:50Speaker 1: like a like a knee wall or something I don't
- 31:52Speaker 1: really know, and Ricardo is standing in front of him.
- 31:55Speaker 1: They're looking at each other, and Ricardo has his hand
- 31:57Speaker 1: on Ash's d What the fuck? And I believe Ash says,
- 32:02Speaker 1: it's hard to tell with the direction of the speech bubbles,
- 32:04Speaker 1: but I believe. He says, how about later tonight, I'll
- 32:07Speaker 1: see if I can slip over there what and Ricardo says,
- 32:11Speaker 1: I'll be waiting for you kid. At this point, Ash
- 32:16Speaker 1: is looking over Ricardo's shoulder at Shorter and the other dude,
- 32:20Speaker 1: and the dude kind of whistles like yeah, and uh,
- 32:25Speaker 1: do you remember when I in episode two, I think
- 32:29Speaker 1: I said something like I know that face here it is.
- 32:33Speaker 1: I'll let Shorter describe it because I don't want to.
- 32:36Speaker 1: They stare at him for a second, and Shorter is
- 32:39Speaker 1: like super fucking confused because I would be too, And
- 32:43Speaker 1: the other guy the Shorts with is like, ooh, boy,
- 32:46Speaker 1: looks like dick Hardo gets to give his hand to
- 32:48Speaker 1: rest tonight. We get some narration here that says that
- 32:51Speaker 1: raunchy look in his eyes you could see it driving
- 32:54Speaker 1: men wild. Jesus, it was the look of a real whore.
- 32:58Speaker 1: What the fuck? Guys, who doesn't call Ash a whore?
- 33:02Speaker 1: Like there should be a drinking game? Well that made
- 33:06Speaker 1: me sad and confused, not really but a little bit.
- 33:09Speaker 1: But seriously, who the fuck every single person needs to
- 33:13Speaker 1: call Ash a whore? All of them. It's evening. I
- 33:20Speaker 1: guess all the cells are like closed and stuff. Shorter
- 33:24Speaker 1: is on his bed with his hands behind his head,
- 33:27Speaker 1: just kind of looking up at the ceiling. Doesn't look
- 33:31Speaker 1: super happy, and he hears some thing I think it's
- 33:35Speaker 1: like the faucet and some like glug glug sounds and
- 33:38Speaker 1: he looks over and he realizes that Ash is standing
- 33:41Speaker 1: at the sink. Possibly, Oh, it looks like he's getting
- 33:44Speaker 1: some water or something. I can't really tell. And Shorter thinks,
- 33:47Speaker 1: when did he I didn't hear him get up. I
- 33:50Speaker 1: didn't even sense it. Ash looks over at Shorter, and
- 33:54Speaker 1: Shorter lays back down, so Ash doesn't know that he's
- 33:56Speaker 1: been looking at him. Ash walks over a little bit,
- 34:00Speaker 1: and he looks dangerous. Shorter is pretending that he's asleep,
- 34:05Speaker 1: and he thinks about his friend saying people saying he
- 34:09Speaker 1: might ascend in an assassin. And then we have some
- 34:12Speaker 1: narration and it goes, if this kid turned out to
- 34:14Speaker 1: be Arthur's hitman, did I stand a chance? He's like
- 34:18Speaker 1: squeezing his blanket. Ash kind of chuckles, and Shorter sits up,
- 34:23Speaker 1: and Ash has his hands on his hips, and he says,
- 34:26Speaker 1: what do you all clenched up for all of a sudden?
- 34:29Speaker 1: God damn it, he's terrifying. You think I'm gonna rape
- 34:32Speaker 1: you or something? Shorter sits up. Ash is like, good night, Shorter.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Shorter is real freaked out. You deserve this, Shorter, not really,
- 34:43Speaker 1: but maybe a little. Anyway, It's I guess another day
- 34:47Speaker 1: and maybe the next day, because Shorter looked real tired.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Shorter is sitting at a desk in the library reading
- 34:54Speaker 1: the book. He yawns, and he thinks, should have listened
- 34:57Speaker 1: to my instincts. I'm staying way clear that kid. From
- 35:00Speaker 1: now on, man, I can't wait to be out of here.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Then it's goodbye to Ash, Goodbye crappy food. The door opens,
- 35:08Speaker 1: it's Ash. Ash is surprised to see him, and Shorter
- 35:12Speaker 1: is surprised as well, and he thinks, uh oh, and
- 35:14Speaker 1: Ash says, oh you again. There's a little narration says
- 35:19Speaker 1: he didn't look so thrilled about it. Sorry, kid, I
- 35:21Speaker 1: work here though. Actually you're the first one is set
- 35:24Speaker 1: foot in the library eight months. Nobody comes here anymore
- 35:27Speaker 1: since the Penthouse subscription ran out. He looks over and
- 35:31Speaker 1: realizes Ash is gone, and he thinks, so wait a minute,
- 35:35Speaker 1: we're alone in here. Ash is like walking around looking
- 35:37Speaker 1: at books stuff. We get some narration that says, if
- 35:41Speaker 1: this guy, if he was the guy, he couldn't have
- 35:44Speaker 1: found a better time to do it. But for some reason,
- 35:47Speaker 1: I got the feeling this kid and Arthur had nothing
- 35:49Speaker 1: to do with each other. For one thing, he wasn't
- 35:52Speaker 1: the type to take orders from a guy like Arthur,
- 35:54Speaker 1: and let's face it, he outclassed Arthur by a mile.
- 35:57Speaker 1: He thinks it's a little too quiet in here, though,
- 36:00Speaker 1: what's he up to? He looks around and he's like, huh,
- 36:03Speaker 1: where'd you go? And he looks over and he sees
- 36:05Speaker 1: Ash sitting on like like a ladder with a book.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Shorter has like an interesting surprise look on his face.
- 36:11Speaker 1: His Ash looks at the book and he says hey,
- 36:16Speaker 1: and Ash is like confused, and Shorter's like, I finally
- 36:20Speaker 1: figured it out, and he's like, you know, making big
- 36:23Speaker 1: expressive gestures and he's like, that's it. Remember how I
- 36:26Speaker 1: said I thought I knew you. I figured it out.
- 36:28Speaker 1: You're on that card, you know what I mean? I
- 36:31Speaker 1: don't know what you mean. Shorter Ash also doesn't know
- 36:33Speaker 1: what he means, and he's like, your brain sells fried
- 36:36Speaker 1: or what. Shorter just runs off and he's like, hang
- 36:39Speaker 1: on a seck, okay. He is running down the hall
- 36:42Speaker 1: and we see that someone is waiting around a corner
- 36:44Speaker 1: as he exits the library. Uh oh, it is Nico
- 36:49Speaker 1: and Frankie and some other dude, and Nico says, coast
- 36:52Speaker 1: is clear, Frankie, fuck leave Ash alone. Back in the cell,
- 36:57Speaker 1: Shorter is going through things in a drawer or something
- 37:00Speaker 1: and he grabs like a little picture and he's like,
- 37:02Speaker 1: found it. It is a picture of an angel. And
- 37:06Speaker 1: he thinks Ash looked exactly like the angel on the
- 37:09Speaker 1: Christmas car if my sister sent me. And he's like, sheesh,
- 37:12Speaker 1: so that was it. He is walking back upstairs. He's
- 37:14Speaker 1: kind of like whistling to himself and he thinks, an
- 37:16Speaker 1: angel of all things, what a laugh? He does look
- 37:19Speaker 1: like the angel on the card. By the way. He
- 37:22Speaker 1: gets to kind of where the library is and he
- 37:24Speaker 1: is met by people standing in front of him and
- 37:29Speaker 1: he says, Nico, dude, what's going on? He thinks something
- 37:32Speaker 1: was up. He Goo's like, sorry, Wong, I can't let
- 37:36Speaker 1: you pass this point. Listen, man, I don't want to
- 37:38Speaker 1: be involved with that kid. No more. Okay, Shorts like
- 37:43Speaker 1: Nico and he thinks, damn it. We cut to Ash,
- 37:47Speaker 1: who is looking like Ash at something but don't see
- 37:51Speaker 1: anything for a minute. Okay. He is surrounded by these
- 37:55Speaker 1: skinhead guys. Basically one of them has a pool cue
- 37:58Speaker 1: huh or a pipe or something. I don't really know.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Ash is much shorter than everyone else and Frankie says,
- 38:05Speaker 1: so hey, kid, let's finish what we started the other day.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Ash says, who sent you? Frankie's like what? Ash says, Arthur.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Frankie says, you're a dead asshole, and they like run
- 38:17Speaker 1: at him, and we cut back to Shorter, who is
- 38:20Speaker 1: just beating the shit out of the people in the hallway,
- 38:22Speaker 1: including Nico. He's doing a nice job. He kicks some
- 38:25Speaker 1: dude in the face and he gets past them and
- 38:28Speaker 1: he hears commotion from the library and he's like Ash,
- 38:32Speaker 1: and we cut back as he opens the door and
- 38:34Speaker 1: Frankie is hid in the face and Ash is kicking
- 38:38Speaker 1: somebody in the head and elbowing somebody in the neck
- 38:41Speaker 1: at the same time, and he thinks to it one time. Wow.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Ash blocks the pool cue with his arms and then
- 38:49Speaker 1: he fucking elbows this dude in the back of the
- 38:52Speaker 1: neck and we get a narration. It practically looked choreographed
- 38:56Speaker 1: the way he was knocking them out. The library is
- 38:59Speaker 1: a mess now, by the way, like there's a bookshelf
- 39:01Speaker 1: that's like halfway over and stuff like that. But there's
- 39:04Speaker 1: a dude behind him who looks like he is not
- 39:07Speaker 1: totally out, and Shorter sees and he's like, behind you, Ash,
- 39:11Speaker 1: I guess it's Frankie. And Frankie like fucking throws a
- 39:13Speaker 1: knife at Ash. But Ash grabs a book and manages
- 39:16Speaker 1: to stop the knife with the book, and he scowls
- 39:19Speaker 1: at Frankie, who looks terrified by the way, and Ash says,
- 39:24Speaker 1: answer my question, Frankie, was it Arthur who ordered you
- 39:27Speaker 1: to kill me? Shorter thinks Arthur. Frankie, wiping some blood
- 39:31Speaker 1: off of his mouth, says, got no idea what you're
- 39:34Speaker 1: talking about. Ash kind of smirks. You were watching me
- 39:38Speaker 1: like a hawk from the day I got here, but
- 39:40Speaker 1: there was nothing sexual about it. You didn't want me.
- 39:42Speaker 1: You wanted to kill me. Oh believe me. I know
- 39:46Speaker 1: the difference because it happens to me a lot. He
- 39:48Speaker 1: pulls the knife out of the book and sticks it
- 39:51Speaker 1: in Frankie's face. I ear or nose your choice. Fuck.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Frankie is terrified and so is Shorter, and Frankie like
- 40:01Speaker 1: backs up against the wall and he's like, okay, okay,
- 40:03Speaker 1: I'll talk. It's like you thought it was Arthur. He
- 40:06Speaker 1: promised me my own turf downtown when I got out. Now,
- 40:09Speaker 1: just put that down, man, Ash says nothing for a moment,
- 40:12Speaker 1: and then he's like beat it, and Frankie and his
- 40:14Speaker 1: dudes leave the library. When they're alone, Shorter says, since
- 40:20Speaker 1: when were you on to him? Ash? I believe he's
- 40:23Speaker 1: still holding the knife. Is like that first time he
- 40:25Speaker 1: came muscling into the canteen. If he really wanted to
- 40:28Speaker 1: make me his bitch, why do you wait a whole week?
- 40:30Speaker 1: But if I ended up getting a sugar daddy looking
- 40:32Speaker 1: out for me, that would be a monkey wrench for him.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Shorter's like, so that's why you were all over Ricardo.
- 40:39Speaker 1: You wanted to see Frankie's reaction. Ash's like, I wasn't
- 40:42Speaker 1: too sure about you. I wasn't too sure about you either.
- 40:45Speaker 1: I figure, if somebody's nice to you for no reason,
- 40:48Speaker 1: watch out. What's what the buddy act? Anyway? Shorter's like,
- 40:52Speaker 1: I don't like how you work, Ash. It's confused. Shorter continues,
- 40:57Speaker 1: you were just using Ricardo, leading him on like that
- 41:00Speaker 1: for what to stick franking on him and get him
- 41:02Speaker 1: to do your dirty work for you. Ash smirks anything
- 41:06Speaker 1: wrong with that? Short is like, yeah, I'd say there's
- 41:09Speaker 1: something wrong with using other people as tools. Ash is
- 41:12Speaker 1: starting to sweat, and he is not happy about this,
- 41:16Speaker 1: and he says, so what, like he didn't want to
- 41:19Speaker 1: use me as a sex toy. You think he was
- 41:22Speaker 1: after me I had a love or something. Jesus, It's
- 41:24Speaker 1: not like he ever asked how I felt about it.
- 41:26Speaker 1: None of those bastards ever do, because they don't realize
- 41:28Speaker 1: I got feelings. What would you know about it? Anyway?
- 41:32Speaker 1: You get some narration this time. The intensity that came
- 41:35Speaker 1: out of him was pure rage, white hot rage. Ash continues,
- 41:40Speaker 1: you don't have a clue of even half the crap
- 41:43Speaker 1: I've been through. Narration. It was the fury he felt
- 41:47Speaker 1: towards all those who tried to treat him like dirt
- 41:49Speaker 1: and dominate him. Shorter says, sure I do. That's not
- 41:57Speaker 1: the right response. Shorter. Ash is like, give me so
- 42:00Speaker 1: freaking break. Shorter is like, I know how you feel, Ash,
- 42:03Speaker 1: but I gotta say this too. Anyway, don't play games
- 42:06Speaker 1: with people's feelings. Don't go manipulating people like that, cuz
- 42:09Speaker 1: if you do that, you're no different from those assholes
- 42:12Speaker 1: you hate. This hurts Ash a lot. He's taken aback
- 42:18Speaker 1: and then tears start to run down his face and
- 42:21Speaker 1: he looks pissed, and he says, damn you the hell
- 42:24Speaker 1: son of a bitch, paint in the ass, melon head jerk,
- 42:26Speaker 1: and he just runs out of the room and slams
- 42:28Speaker 1: the door, and Shorts like hey, and he thinks melon
- 42:32Speaker 1: head jerk. Sheesh, kid sure called me a lot of names,
- 42:38Speaker 1: poor Ash. We get like a panel that's like trees
- 42:41Speaker 1: and stuff. This is obviously later, and we have some
- 42:43Speaker 1: narration word of what happened in the library that day
- 42:46Speaker 1: went around fast guys. Suddenly we're treating Ash like he
- 42:49Speaker 1: was a coppo. We see Ash and Shorter walking and
- 42:53Speaker 1: some guy looks over and kind of like moves over
- 42:56Speaker 1: and is like, go ahead, and he continues, which seemed
- 42:59Speaker 1: to make him uncomfortable. Ever since that incident, he'd slowly
- 43:02Speaker 1: started letting his feelings show. Ash is sipping on a
- 43:05Speaker 1: beverage and he looks he's kind of pouting. He's not
- 43:09Speaker 1: happy about being told to go in front of someone anyway.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Narration continues and me and him started talking more and more.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Shorter and Asher are sitting under tree and Shorter says,
- 43:20Speaker 1: no way you hear me because of that double deal and
- 43:23Speaker 1: bastard too, and Ash's like, yup. Cop showed up right
- 43:26Speaker 1: in the middle of it, like someone had sent them
- 43:27Speaker 1: an invitation, which he had. I thought, crap, we've been
- 43:32Speaker 1: set up, but it was too late to run. Shorter says,
- 43:36Speaker 1: he's using the same mo on everybody that she bastard
- 43:39Speaker 1: still in all. I guess Arthur's instincts aren't too bad. Huh,
- 43:43Speaker 1: asshole was trying to nip you in the bud. Dude.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Ash looks over and he's like, huh. Shorter says, A nothing,
- 43:48Speaker 1: we get some narration. Arthur had it figured out this
- 43:51Speaker 1: kid was going to turn to a very serious rival.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Hope you enjoyed it while it lasted, Arthur, because your
- 43:56Speaker 1: reign is over. Yeah, I assume this is a little
- 43:59Speaker 1: bit later, Ash is standing and Shorter looks over because
- 44:03Speaker 1: ashra behind him, and Ash says, heard you get out
- 44:05Speaker 1: at the end of the month. Yeah, can't wait, man,
- 44:07Speaker 1: Ash says me, neither. Your snoring has been driving me nuts.
- 44:11Speaker 1: They sit on a bench and Short's like, ah, man,
- 44:13Speaker 1: the breeze feels good. Asha's just kind of looking contemplatively forward,
- 44:18Speaker 1: and he says, the way I look. I've had guys
- 44:22Speaker 1: make passes at me tons of times. Shorter looks over
- 44:25Speaker 1: a surprise, possibly because Asha just started talking about himself.
- 44:29Speaker 1: And Ash continues, and all of them, it's like they
- 44:32Speaker 1: can't believe it. When I fight him off, he's kind
- 44:34Speaker 1: of slumped over. And then they always get really mad.
- 44:38Speaker 1: It's like, how dare I mess up their fantasy? You know,
- 44:41Speaker 1: like I'm not even a real person to them. Fuck,
- 44:45Speaker 1: And that's why I figured it's a lot easier for
- 44:47Speaker 1: me to take the lead, get them wrapped around my finger,
- 44:50Speaker 1: and do whatever I want them to do. And Shorter thinks, yeah,
- 44:55Speaker 1: but where did he learn to do what I saw
- 44:57Speaker 1: him do to Ricardo continues, I'm just glad I wasn't
- 45:02Speaker 1: born a girl. They get it even worse, so I'm
- 45:04Speaker 1: sure i'd be a real slut. And Shorter's like, nah,
- 45:07Speaker 1: you wouldn't. You'd be a real lady, a real class
- 45:11Speaker 1: act who wouldn't even give somebody like me the time
- 45:13Speaker 1: of day. He thinks, where'd he grow up? What was
- 45:17Speaker 1: his family? Like? He didn't really have a childhood. I
- 45:24Speaker 1: wished I knew a lot more about this guy. Ash says, Hey,
- 45:27Speaker 1: don't gross me out. You're saying you'd want to ask
- 45:30Speaker 1: me out if I was a girl. Shorter's like hmm,
- 45:33Speaker 1: never had a thing for voice. But and Ash is like,
- 45:36Speaker 1: what so you do now? Shorter says, oh, hey, check
- 45:39Speaker 1: it out. He picks up like a piece of paper
- 45:41Speaker 1: or something to show him, and he says, see, she
- 45:43Speaker 1: looks just like you. Ash takes the picture out of
- 45:47Speaker 1: Shorter's hand and he's staring at it a little bit confused,
- 45:49Speaker 1: and Shorter says, I kept thinking I met you before,
- 45:52Speaker 1: but it turned out to be her this Christmas card angel.
- 45:56Speaker 1: The thing is, she's actually pretty sexy back when I
- 45:59Speaker 1: was little before. He get my hands on Nudi mags
- 46:00Speaker 1: I used to jack, and he stops himself and puts
- 46:02Speaker 1: his hand over his mouth and he's like oops, yeah
- 46:06Speaker 1: that's what. Ash stares at him, disgusted, and then we
- 46:11Speaker 1: go to I guess this is Shorter leaving juvenile attention.
- 46:16Speaker 1: He's walking down the hall. He's got his hand on
- 46:18Speaker 1: his head. He's kind of embarrassed because everyone's saying nice
- 46:21Speaker 1: things to him, like see you around Shorter, good riddance, dude,
- 46:23Speaker 1: take care man, You'll be back here in no time.
- 46:26Speaker 1: He gets to kind of the gates area and the
- 46:28Speaker 1: warden's like, bye, kid, don't come back. Got that. Shorter
- 46:31Speaker 1: is like, sure, hope not, and the dude is unlocking
- 46:34Speaker 1: the gates. Shorter looks back and Ash is standing by
- 46:37Speaker 1: the wall smirking at him, and behind Ash are a
- 46:40Speaker 1: couple of other guys do and Shorter says, oh, ho,
- 46:43Speaker 1: I see you've got your entourage, big man. If you
- 46:45Speaker 1: can call reform school a campus, Ash says, cut it out, Shorter,
- 46:49Speaker 1: so listen. He holds up the picture of the angel
- 46:53Speaker 1: and he says, I'm keeping this your angel. Shorter's like, huh, wait, huh,
- 46:58Speaker 1: but huh. Ash starts to walk off, and he's like,
- 47:01Speaker 1: it's a sin to jack off to this, you know,
- 47:03Speaker 1: and he starts laughing, and Shorter's like, wait a minute, hey,
- 47:06Speaker 1: give it back, and the warden is like grabbing Shorter
- 47:09Speaker 1: by the arm and he's like, let's go Shorter, and
- 47:11Speaker 1: Shorter says, but that's mine, and the Warden's like, I said,
- 47:14Speaker 1: let's go, and Ash smiles really genuinely, and we get
- 47:20Speaker 1: a narration that says, that was the first time I
- 47:22Speaker 1: saw Ash laugh, two whole months after I'd met him.
- 47:25Speaker 1: His face when he laughed was cute and childlike, totally angelic,
- 47:31Speaker 1: and that's it. So closing thoughts. I guess, what'd you
- 47:35Speaker 1: think that was about the past? I guess, and it
- 47:38Speaker 1: was really sexual because it's Bananafish, so of course it is.
- 47:44Speaker 1: I did learn because I was looking into it, that
- 47:47Speaker 1: there's a lot of sexual assault in juvenile correctional centers.
- 47:52Speaker 1: I didn't know if there was gonna be more or less,
- 47:54Speaker 1: but it looks like there's a ton, possibly more than
- 47:58Speaker 1: in regular prison. But now I don't remember if I'm
- 48:00Speaker 1: right about that, so don't quote me on that, but
- 48:01Speaker 1: there's a lot of it. Actually, it looked like in
- 48:04Speaker 1: the studies I was reading that in boys juvenile correction centers,
- 48:09Speaker 1: the guards were usually the perpetrators of the assault, whereas
- 48:14Speaker 1: in girls correctional centers it seemed like it was the
- 48:18Speaker 1: actual girls assaulting the other girls, other inmate girls. I
- 48:23Speaker 1: don't know why that is, but now you know. But anyway, Yeah,
- 48:28Speaker 1: so it's interesting to see Ash being that cool, like,
- 48:32Speaker 1: I mean, emotionless cool, because it's been a really long
- 48:34Speaker 1: time since we saw him like that in the anime.
- 48:38Speaker 1: Basically we almost never saw him like that. But yeah,
- 48:42Speaker 1: he's just emotionless, totally keeping everything that he is inside him,
- 48:48Speaker 1: and it totally sucks, by the way, to have people
- 48:51Speaker 1: think that you just don't have emotions because for some
- 48:54Speaker 1: reason or another you aren't comfortable showing them. I think
- 48:58Speaker 1: everybody has emotions, by the way. So if you see
- 49:00Speaker 1: someone who doesn't look like they do, they do. They
- 49:04Speaker 1: just don't want you to know about them for some
- 49:06Speaker 1: reason because they don't feel safe usually, which is what
- 49:09Speaker 1: was happening in Ash's case. He does not feel safe
- 49:12Speaker 1: in this situation. He doesn't really feel safe in any situation.
- 49:15Speaker 1: It's a lot easier for him to just push everything down,
- 49:19Speaker 1: you know. And yeah, so in this he's fifteen, So
- 49:23Speaker 1: we had some context clues that this is after he's
- 49:25Speaker 1: trained with Blanca, because remember he was saying like Blanca
- 49:29Speaker 1: never taught him too easy on people, so we saw
- 49:32Speaker 1: like he learned that he just needs to kind of
- 49:34Speaker 1: like shift his position at the last second so he
- 49:36Speaker 1: doesn't kill someone. So yeah, after Blanca, I guess he
- 49:41Speaker 1: was kind of running the streets at that point, because
- 49:45Speaker 1: we know there's a switch over somewhere from when he
- 49:47Speaker 1: is with you know, all the time, to when he
- 49:50Speaker 1: is more or less just running around in the streets
- 49:53Speaker 1: of New York in the Lower East Side. Kind of area,
- 49:56Speaker 1: So I guess this is kind of where we are
- 49:58Speaker 1: and killed four people. That's interesting, but it's not like
- 50:02Speaker 1: he hadn't killed tons more people in the show. So yeah,
- 50:06Speaker 1: I think the uh, the whole thing which was kind
- 50:09Speaker 1: of the main part in my opinion of Angel Eyes
- 50:14Speaker 1: about him as Shorter felt like he was using people,
- 50:19Speaker 1: was so heavy and like fucked up to me because
- 50:24Speaker 1: it kind of goes back to what I was saying
- 50:26Speaker 1: about like fawn response, like I don't think he accepts
- 50:29Speaker 1: for in that circumstance. I think a lot of times
- 50:31Speaker 1: he's just doing whatever in order to not get hurt,
- 50:34Speaker 1: which is what we heard, Like he tries to fight
- 50:38Speaker 1: back and it's just worse. Yeah, and I think, you know,
- 50:43Speaker 1: being told that you were just as bad as those people,
- 50:46Speaker 1: it's got to be really totally traumatizing and hurtful to
- 50:49Speaker 1: him because he's just trying to survive, Like he's really
- 50:54Speaker 1: just trying to survive this, and Shorter doesn't know, and
- 50:58Speaker 1: Shorter probably never complampletely knows everything. I mean, by the end,
- 51:03Speaker 1: he does, I guess. But yeah, I liked seeing the
- 51:07Speaker 1: beginning of their friendship, and it also gave me kind
- 51:11Speaker 1: of insight into why Shorter never knew everything, because I
- 51:15Speaker 1: don't think Ash ever completely fully trusted him after their conversation.
- 51:20Speaker 1: You know, after all, Shorter was just hanging around Ash
- 51:25Speaker 1: because the warden asked him to. He was another person
- 51:28Speaker 1: who started his friendship or whatever with Ash because he
- 51:33Speaker 1: was going to get something back for it. And I
- 51:36Speaker 1: think Ash knew, you know, And that's why Shorter never
- 51:40Speaker 1: found out that he had a brother, or about what
- 51:43Speaker 1: happened when he was seven, or how he killed his
- 51:46Speaker 1: first person when he was eight. That's only things that
- 51:49Speaker 1: Age found out about because Ash wholly trusted Ag because
- 51:54Speaker 1: he didn't think Ag really wanted. There was no ulterior
- 51:58Speaker 1: motive with Ag, you know, just you liked Ash and
- 52:02Speaker 1: he cared. So yeah, there's not much else that needs
- 52:06Speaker 1: to be said here. I don't think this is running
- 52:08Speaker 1: long because it took me forever to read through that,
- 52:11Speaker 1: So I hope that you think that this was okay.
- 52:14Speaker 1: So next week we're gonna cover Garden of Light, which
- 52:17Speaker 1: comes directly after this in volume nineteen of the manga
- 52:20Speaker 1: if you're trying to find it, and I'll probably just
- 52:23Speaker 1: cry through the whole thing. So it's totally different than this,
- 52:27Speaker 1: there's I promise you no assault in Garden of Light,
- 52:31Speaker 1: so get excited because it'll be like the first time
- 52:35Speaker 1: ever in Banana Fish that there's not any assault, and
- 52:38Speaker 1: then we'll get back to the assault the week after.
- 52:40Speaker 1: But it's really important, probably more important than this story wise.
- 52:45Speaker 1: I think this was a really nice look at more
- 52:48Speaker 1: about Ash as a character, because there were some things
- 52:50Speaker 1: that I had, you know, extrapolated watching Banana Fish, the anime,
- 52:55Speaker 1: that I found out I was right about, So I
- 53:00Speaker 1: like that anyway, that's gonna be it. I hope I
- 53:03Speaker 1: can actually edit this in time to get it out
- 53:06Speaker 1: to you because everything sucks right now, but I probably will,
- 53:09Speaker 1: so Yeah, I hope you have a really good whatever,
- 53:12Speaker 1: and I hope this wasn't super awkward for you. It
- 53:15Speaker 1: felt kind of awkward to me. And yeah, I will
- 53:19Speaker 1: hopefully talk to you see it next week, as long
- 53:23Speaker 1: as everything is okay in the world, I guess, or
- 53:26Speaker 1: even if it's not, as long as we're both alive
- 53:29Speaker 1: later weems
