- 0:17be the Varsity Network app and the Varsity Network dot Com. Back with Jim
- 0:20Mora, a Yukon coming off a loss to Duke forty one seven. Jim
- 0:26in that game and the field position for Duke was tremendous, And I know
- 0:31you get in these games and obviously there's so many factors that are involved in
- 0:35winning and losing, but that one was notable to me. They had three
- 0:39drives at starting at midfield or in Ukon territory. Two of their drives were
- 0:45at their own thirty seven and the forty yard line, and then one,
- 0:48of course, that the Yukon tent. I mean, you put a team
- 0:51in field position like that, a team of that quality, I mean you're
- 0:55asking for trouble. Yeah, it's tough sled when that happened, and then
- 1:00you know they also had a scoop and score touchdown. So yeah, you
- 1:06know we here's what needs to happen is Number one, when we kick the
- 1:11ball or punt the ball, we need to do a better job of placing
- 1:15the ball where it's supposed to be placed, and our coverage units need to
- 1:18do a better job of getting down there making tackles. We're giving up too
- 1:19many yards in our punt return game and in our kickoff return game to be
- 1:25quite frankly, quite frank Number two, we need to do a better job
- 1:29on defense of getting some takeaways and giving our offense field position. And I
- 1:33know you just mentioned their field position, but we can help our offense with
- 1:36field position as well, both through our return game and our defense getting some
- 1:40takeaways. And in number three, we got to sustain some drives and and
- 1:46you know, pin some people back down in there with some really good punts.
- 1:49I think George is a good punter who's able to put it down inside
- 1:52the ten on a regular basis if we can give him a chance, you
- 1:55know, at least get around midfield if we have to punt. So yeah,
- 2:00I mean field position. You know, it's kind of like it's it's
- 2:05a it's a hidden a hidden number at times, but it is so important
- 2:08to winning a football game and then capitalizing on that field position, because when
- 2:13we have good field position, we gotta we gotta be able to put points
- 2:16on the board. And uh, yeah, that's that's a that's an issue.
- 2:21That's an issue. I can't I can't can't sugarcoat it at all.
- 2:23Yeah. Uh, the rush game, one hundred and forty six in the
- 2:27game, but fifty seven yards tackles for loss. That is something that will
- 2:34kind of diffuse your running game. I don't know why it happened. Maybe
- 2:37you looked at all the tape. Obviously you saw some things. How would
- 2:40you explain that, I mean, Duke was getting into the backfield and getting
- 2:44some tax Yeah, here's how it. Here's how I explain it is.
- 2:49Uh, we had the reverse that we fumbled, so that was minus fifteen
- 2:55and then every sack comes off your rush yardage. That was is what I
- 3:00noticed immediately after the game, Mike was one hundred and forty six yards gained,
- 3:06but forty six or like you said, fifty seven yards lost like that,
- 3:09that was that was an outlier to me. I hadn't really been involved
- 3:14in anything like that, and I don't know that that happens very often.
- 3:16So we can't have we can't have negative plays. We can't fumble on,
- 3:23we can't get you know, cop behind the line on a reverse, we
- 3:24can't fumble on the little option to Brian Domino that costs us fifteen yards.
- 3:30So and then, like I said, every set for some reason in college
- 3:34football, and I don't know the answer, I don't really care, but
- 3:38every sack goes against your rush yards rather than your pass yardage in the NFL,
- 3:45and what would make sense if it's a pass play and you get sacked,
- 3:51that should come off your pass yardage, not off your rush yardage.
- 3:53So that one's kind of interesting, but it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter
- 3:58to me. It's just it's interesting thing to me. So you gotta sometimes
- 4:02look beyond the yards and figure out you know exactly what happens, and we
- 4:08know what happened. We had, we had too many negative plays. A
- 4:12couple of guys were banged up. You didn't have DeVante Houston froment of the
- 4:17game, and Eric Watts left with a bit of an injury. Can you
- 4:20get us an update on that? Where are those guys at and are you
- 4:24hopeful they're going to be able to play full time this weekend. Yeah,
- 4:28I'm hopeful, but you know, I mean, we'll see when we get
- 4:30closer to the game, we'll see what transpires. And it's like with all
- 4:33our players, you know, you want them to play. You want to
- 4:36make sure that they're mentally and physically and those things go together prepared to play.
- 4:43Sometimes guys coming off injuries, you know, there's a mental hurdle that
- 4:46they have to get over in order to play, you know, especially at
- 4:49this age when they're still learning their limitations. So we just have to be
- 4:55really smart with all of our players that are nicked up in terms of may
- 5:00can sure that we make the right decision for them. And we have a
- 5:02tremendous medical staff, tremendous athletic training group, and I rely heavily on them
- 5:08and trust what they tell me in terms of if a guy's ready to play
- 5:11or not a little later in the show, we're gonna talk with defensive back
- 5:15Mumu bin Wahadu. I had to sit out the first half of the Duke
- 5:18game, played in the second half, and I'm going to talk to him
- 5:24about that targeting penalty that took him out of a game. For Yukon,
- 5:27and we had another one in the duke game with the Jackson Mitchell and that
- 5:30took some of the air out of the balloon, I thought, because obviously
- 5:33he's such a lynchpin player on defense. I don't know what to say about
- 5:40it. On the air, I said some terrible things, and I know
- 5:44you were set. I kind of lost it, but it was it was
- 5:49beyond befuddling that at first it was not targeting, and then someone somewhere called
- 5:57the referee on the field and told him to look at it again and then
- 6:00told him to turn it into targeting and disqualify a player. I mean,
- 6:04I get upset when I see stuff like that. Yeah, me too.
- 6:10I think that it would be great if the NCAA could look at the way
- 6:16that that rule is interpreted and the penalties that are attached to it. I
- 6:21think if it's an egregious air, if a player is obviously you know,
- 6:26going in there and launching and dropping his head and hitting someone on the crown
- 6:30of his helmet hard, then the consequences should be, you know, they
- 6:35should be harsh. But I think if it's just a football play, like
- 6:40mum, that was just a football play, Jackson, that was just a
- 6:43football play. I think that kicking a young man out of a game at
- 6:47this point in his career, where his opportunities to play are so limited and
- 6:51when it's just a football play, I think that's a little harsh. You
- 6:56know, enforced the penalty if you must, but don't kick him out if
- 7:00it's The NFL didn't kick guys out of the games anymore for that stuff.
- 7:04They penalize them, and they find them. We can't find college players obviously,
- 7:09although maybe we can now that the Nils and effect. I don't know,
- 7:11we'll see how that works. But I just think eliminating a guy for
- 7:15what's just really a common football play is a little bit harsh. So,
- 7:21you know, it's my hope that the decision makers at the NCAA level listen
- 7:28to coaches, you know, men that have played the game, have coached
- 7:31the game, that are around these young men every day, and take our
- 7:35advice in terms of what should be an ejection and what should just be a
- 7:42penalty and continue to play. But I don't know that that will happen or
- 7:46not. I hope it does. Yeah, having been on the officiating side
- 7:49of things myself and a couple other spwards, yeah, baseball and basketball.
- 7:55But I know a lot of football officials too, And one thing I have
- 7:59noticed, you know, it's a little bit political the way these officials are
- 8:03assigned to think. So my feeling is sometimes officials make calls based on they
- 8:11don't want someone to not be happy about what they did on the fields,
- 8:15who might be assigning them the following ten weeks. So I feel like there's
- 8:18extra pressure on officials sometimes to do things by the book or whatever you want
- 8:24to call it. But having said that, coach, I watched twenty games
- 8:30this weekend. I saw hits like Jackson Mitchell's, like moving bin Wahad.
- 8:35I saw that ten times at least in the twenty games that I watched this
- 8:39weekend, and none of those were flagged. Yeah, those are just football
- 8:43plays, you know, And like the officials, it wasn't the officials.
- 8:48If it's close, they got to drop the flag. That's their job.
- 8:54It's when they take the game off the field, they take it to the
- 8:58replay booth, and then they take it to you know, the conference office,
- 9:03and then they they they kind of foul up the procedure in the office
- 9:09for whatever reason, and they have their reasons. That's when it's frustrating,
- 9:13you know. Now, the director of officials for the ACC is a guy
- 9:20named Al Riveron, who I have tremendous respect for and I think he's really
- 9:24good. He was in the NFL for a long time and you know,
- 9:28he officiated mini games that I've you know, been a part of, and
- 9:31I think he's really really good. I think they just, you know,
- 9:35from a mechanic standpoint, they didn't get it right, and it's unfortunate,
- 9:41you know, but I can tell you this, it really honestly, you
- 9:46can't say that it had a huge impact on the game. If it was
- 9:50late in the game and the guy that came in for him didn't play,
- 9:52well, then that'd be one thing. But you know that wasn't the case.
- 9:58So we just gotta we just gotta make sure that we're doing it exactly
- 10:03right and that we're aware that the burden lies on the defensive player. And
- 10:07that is the fact. The burden does lie on the defensive player. So
- 10:13without saying the word, we have to be careful. We have to be
- 10:16aware of how things are being called, and we have to adjust because at
- 10:22this point in time, right now, the NCAA is not going to adjust
- 10:26to us. They're not going to now. Maybe they will in the future,
- 10:28but right now, they're not going to. Yes, it's it's a
- 10:31tough play for any defensive player running forty yards and four seconds, trying to
- 10:37make a decision in the last split second. I'm I hit a guy.
- 10:39I mean almost said that. He'll say that to us later in the show,
- 10:43and I think it's a tough spot to put a defensive player in.
- 10:46All right, we'll take a quick time out back with the Jim Moore Yukon
- 10:50Football Coach. We'll get to kicking and quarterbacking and day and the life stuff
- 10:54to talk about. So stay with us. This is the Yukon Football Coaches
- 10:58Show on Liarfield.
