- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Welcome to NHL Unscripted. Coming up, our favorite moment of
- 0:24Speaker 1: twenty and twenty five cent a file and sixty on
- 0:27Speaker 1: a misstep for director of Bradley Cooper now on Netflix.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Plus our man commie that's right, International hockey going right
- 0:34Speaker 1: now World Juniors. We have a commie on the podcast,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Mike Commodore with unbelievable stories about Mike Babcock, Scott O'Neil
- 0:41Speaker 1: and an uber experience which he will not forget. But
- 0:44Speaker 1: first and foremost, happy holidays to all hope. It was
- 0:47Speaker 1: a merry Christmas in Quebec, JD. You're on your way
- 0:49Speaker 1: soon to Florida. Your action pack time right now for
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Demers group.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I was in Canada, Quebec City. See some family
- 0:59Speaker 2: experienced the minus twenty five celsius. That was cold as
- 1:02Speaker 2: absolute dog shit. It was a great time. They'll got
- 1:06Speaker 2: to go skate on the ODR on the outdoor rink.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I still got it. Got to go skate with my
- 1:12Speaker 2: niece who's nine years old almost ten and her hockey team.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So it was a lot of fun because all the
- 1:17Speaker 2: kids were chirping me. It was the girls team, and
- 1:21Speaker 2: they were asking me for my autograph and then saying
- 1:23Speaker 2: my autograph was quote scribbly scrabbly and not a good autograph.
- 1:29Speaker 2: So I was kind of like a little humble pie
- 1:31Speaker 2: with the kids. Kids don't lie to you, so you're
- 1:32Speaker 2: just sitting there and you're like, it's it was tough
- 1:36Speaker 2: to take, but I ended up scoring two and getting
- 1:38Speaker 2: two assists in the little game we played and I dominated.
- 1:41Speaker 2: So at the end of the day, I win, and
- 1:44Speaker 2: I'm the former NHL R So yeah, I serve them
- 1:47Speaker 2: back a plate of justice.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I like it.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Let's hope that there's justice for Canada at the Olympics.
- 1:53Speaker 1: We're recording this before the Team Canada roster is going
- 1:56Speaker 1: to be revealed, but we'll wait until the other rosters
- 1:57Speaker 1: are out to review them all together. But you are
- 1:59Speaker 1: wearing a Shark's jersey because Macklin celebrating is gonna be
- 2:02Speaker 1: on the team, which is gonna be unbelievable. Mac do
- 2:04Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, HiT's a mac Daddy. He's a Mac Mac truck.
- 2:10Speaker 2: HiT's the Mac Daddy's a truck. Canada. They did not
- 2:16Speaker 2: fuck this one up. Team Canada. I mean this kid.
- 2:21Speaker 2: We We've said it, we talked about it. We're Nostrae
- 2:24Speaker 2: Demurz and Verkadomas Erkstra Domas, I'll figure it out, Orkstudromas
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and Pinchevski Magoo. We all talked about it.
- 2:34Speaker 2: We all watched the Sharks. We all know this kid
- 2:37Speaker 2: is special. I don't say it lightly when I say,
- 2:41Speaker 2: and I've been fighting off the edge to say it generational.
- 2:44Speaker 2: He's a generational player. I know. I tweeted about it.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Some people were like, oh, oh, captain obvious. I'm like,
- 2:51Speaker 2: no one's really went over the line and said this
- 2:53Speaker 2: kid's generational. They said he's a great player. What he's doing,
- 2:57Speaker 2: and the parody between the disparity between him and second
- 3:01Speaker 2: place scoring on his team is astronomical. Will Smith at
- 3:05Speaker 2: twenty nine points and he's at sixty ye like that is.
- 3:09Speaker 2: That's a bigger gap than I think koutrof the year
- 3:12Speaker 2: he got stumped for the heart. But they're in a
- 3:14Speaker 2: playoff spot. He deserves to be there. I cannot wait
- 3:17Speaker 2: to watch him play with Sid McKinnon, McDavid. You know
- 3:21Speaker 2: right now, I'd love to see him. I saw a
- 3:24Speaker 2: projection but I think him on the left wing, sid
- 3:27Speaker 2: in the middle and Nathan McKinnon on the right wing
- 3:30Speaker 2: is just a perfect line. That is just a line
- 3:33Speaker 2: that's got to be rolled out. And then your first
- 3:35Speaker 2: line for Canada, I think you got McDavid because McDavid's
- 3:38Speaker 2: so high end speed. Maybe McDavid with like a Tom
- 3:42Speaker 2: Wilson or even a you know, i'd try. You don't
- 3:45Speaker 2: want to say mark Stone. Mark Ston will probably be
- 3:47Speaker 2: on the third line if they bring him up. But
- 3:49Speaker 2: I'm gonna be interested to see who they put McDavid
- 3:51Speaker 2: with and who who kind of because there's a lot
- 3:54Speaker 2: of talk about who's going to be on his wing.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Butt Going back to macklin celebrity so well deserved, I
- 3:58Speaker 2: think he's going to be a dominant force there. He's
- 4:01Speaker 2: really his evolution from year one to year two. It's
- 4:04Speaker 2: just something that I don't know how many times we've
- 4:07Speaker 2: seen this. He's breaking all these records in NHL history,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and yeah, it couldn't happen to a better kid, and
- 4:12Speaker 2: do a better franchise.
- 4:14Speaker 1: The Sharks, as you said, third in the league behind
- 4:16Speaker 1: McDavid and McKinnon sixty points right now, tal throwing out
- 4:19Speaker 1: potentially Ryanhart playing with McDavid, but we'll see ultimately when
- 4:23Speaker 1: the roster is revealed and where this is team makeser's decisions. Bottomlized,
- 4:26Speaker 1: this should go only win a Classic, something that Canada,
- 4:28Speaker 1: at least ANHL has never done before. Hockey in southern
- 4:31Speaker 1: Florida for the Winter Classic seventy degrees fahrenheit. That's plus
- 4:34Speaker 1: twenty one celts just after you endured minus twenty six
- 4:37Speaker 1: in Quebec City. NHL's had outdoor games in Raleigh and Dallas,
- 4:40Speaker 1: but this is the furthest south that they have gone.
- 4:42Speaker 1: So they've got the two trucks. Instead of won the
- 4:45Speaker 1: building which has a retractable roof pumping in the air conditioning,
- 4:48Speaker 1: they got the refrigerator going. We don't know, it's gonna
- 4:50Speaker 1: be like gdy. You know what, it's liketed with ice.
- 4:52Speaker 1: If it starts melting with a danger, that can be
- 4:54Speaker 1: safety et cetera. Are you looking for? I mean, listen,
- 4:56Speaker 1: you're going to Miami. How great is that going to be?
- 4:57Speaker 1: But the actual game experience, how do you think it's
- 4:59Speaker 1: gonna turn out?
- 5:01Speaker 2: I think they're gonna do a good job. They seem
- 5:03Speaker 2: to always pull this together. I think the I've been
- 5:06Speaker 2: to Marlin's Stadium. I've been to It's loan depot. Now
- 5:10Speaker 2: i've been there. I watched the home run derby there.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I watched a couple of games when I was playing
- 5:16Speaker 2: with the Panthers. And it's cold in there, just in
- 5:19Speaker 2: the middle of the summer. Like they they pumped the Yeah,
- 5:22Speaker 2: they crank up the acen and they're bringing another two
- 5:25Speaker 2: trucks there. So even if they open the building up
- 5:28Speaker 2: and the game's gonna puck, drop's gonna be at eight,
- 5:30Speaker 2: so the sun's gonna be gone. They're gonna open the
- 5:32Speaker 2: building like an hour before. I think it's gonna stay
- 5:35Speaker 2: relatively cool. I honestly do. I don't think it's gonna
- 5:38Speaker 2: be anything crazy. I think it's gonna be very cool
- 5:41Speaker 2: conditions and uh, it's gonna be very unique. So I'm
- 5:44Speaker 2: interested to see how they do it. I think they
- 5:46Speaker 2: they always do figure it out. And the guys, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 2: hockey players, they don't complain. They're gonna play. It's not
- 5:51Speaker 2: gonna be you know, I think ice, you know, it's
- 5:55Speaker 2: it gets a little bit hairy if it gets too soft.
- 5:57Speaker 2: But even if it's soft, that just means you change
- 5:59Speaker 2: the way your blades sharpened. And you know, it's not
- 6:02Speaker 2: like there's gonna be holes in the ice, So we're
- 6:04Speaker 2: to get a look at it. We do a practice
- 6:05Speaker 2: stream with YouTube tomorrow. I'm flying there today as we
- 6:10Speaker 2: film that. After we film this, and uh, I'm gonna
- 6:13Speaker 2: be there on New Year's Day. We're doing both the
- 6:15Speaker 2: live streams for practice, so I'm gonna see the ice
- 6:18Speaker 2: firsthand and I'll be able to do you know, Bruce
- 6:21Speaker 2: Almighty reporting live from Lone Depot Park. That's how the
- 6:26Speaker 2: cookie good reference. Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Listen, let's talk about your savers because you guaranteed it
- 6:32Speaker 1: last week. This team is going to playoffs. They have
- 6:34Speaker 1: missed the playoffs fourteen straight years. They've won nine trade games.
- 6:37Speaker 1: They got a chance to get to ten Wednesday night
- 6:39Speaker 1: against Dallas. Their role right now, you've already you've already
- 6:42Speaker 1: drawn a line of the same. They're gonna be a playoffeam.
- 6:43Speaker 1: My question is this could they be buyers? Remember in
- 6:46Speaker 1: twenty nineteen, Yarmo Kakalana was GM of Blue Jackets team
- 6:49Speaker 1: had never won a playoff series.
- 6:50Speaker 3: He went all in.
- 6:51Speaker 1: He got MATC DW Shane Ryan to single, Adam McQuaid
- 6:54Speaker 1: Keith kincaid. Do Shane sign with Nashville that summer, but
- 6:56Speaker 1: he helped Columbus get their first and only playoff series
- 6:59Speaker 1: win in the team's history. My question is this, do
- 7:02Speaker 1: you think Yarmo is gonna make it moves the deadline
- 7:04Speaker 1: to make sure this Buffalo team finally gets the playoffs.
- 7:08Speaker 2: It's so tough because you know, you look at their
- 7:11Speaker 2: roster on paper when they're healthy, and I mean, this
- 7:14Speaker 2: is the team that I don't think needs to add
- 7:16Speaker 2: much other than maybe some depth pieces that you know,
- 7:19Speaker 2: some guys, some extra warm bodies that could come in
- 7:21Speaker 2: if there's an injury, because the one thing we know
- 7:24Speaker 2: is that you know how dominant and how good this
- 7:26Speaker 2: team is and complete this team is when Josh Norris
- 7:29Speaker 2: is healthy. But the fucking poor guy can't stay healthy.
- 7:32Speaker 2: And I think we have to go under the assumption that,
- 7:38Speaker 2: you know, whatever can happen will happen with him, and
- 7:40Speaker 2: there will be an injury at some point, whether it
- 7:43Speaker 2: be the first round of the playoffs, if they make
- 7:45Speaker 2: it in ten games before the end of season. So
- 7:47Speaker 2: I think they need to go get some center depth
- 7:50Speaker 2: to help them out. You know where they get that,
- 7:53Speaker 2: I don't know. You know, there's not a lot of
- 7:55Speaker 2: teams because it's weird because the way the season is
- 7:59Speaker 2: and how tight it is. Other than a couple teams
- 8:03Speaker 2: right now that if you look at the standings that
- 8:05Speaker 2: I feel you could say argue that they're out. You
- 8:07Speaker 2: look at the Winnipeg Jets. Maybe they trade Jonathan Taves.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Maybe you trade Jonathan Taves for a prospect or a Pick's.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Brutal right now, I gotta be honest, Yeah.
- 8:18Speaker 2: But you bring in an extra player, like you just
- 8:20Speaker 2: have him to play on the fourth line. Again, I
- 8:23Speaker 2: think Taves is being asked to do too much, you know,
- 8:25Speaker 2: I think Taves is more of a fourth line guy
- 8:28Speaker 2: at this point. So if you can have him on
- 8:30Speaker 2: your fourth line if somebody gets injured, just to help out.
- 8:34Speaker 2: You're looking at you know, you look at the Jets,
- 8:36Speaker 2: who I think they're in a weird point. You look
- 8:39Speaker 2: at the Blackhawks, but you know they're kind of back
- 8:42Speaker 2: and forth. Boston's gonna start falling out of it, I
- 8:44Speaker 2: think soon, and they are, so do they kind of
- 8:46Speaker 2: offload a couple guys, You go get a little bit
- 8:48Speaker 2: of toughness maybe you look at a Tanner Jane, you
- 8:51Speaker 2: look at a Mark Castelick. These guys in Boston that
- 8:54Speaker 2: are that are very well like I, it's tough. It's
- 8:57Speaker 2: because I think they got to get some warm bodies.
- 9:00Speaker 2: But you got to be careful because right now, when
- 9:02Speaker 2: you're on a nine game winning streak, you don't want
- 9:04Speaker 2: to touch anything. A lot of gms will go out
- 9:06Speaker 2: and bring in like, oh, let's bring in an even
- 9:07Speaker 2: bigger player because we can make a splash, and then
- 9:10Speaker 2: that doesn't work out because the chemistry needs to be had,
- 9:13Speaker 2: and you got to think, like they're going into the Olympics,
- 9:16Speaker 2: you have all this, you have this break coming up
- 9:18Speaker 2: in February. You got to do something soon because once
- 9:21Speaker 2: the Olympics happen, it's a sprint. You can't be having
- 9:24Speaker 2: a guy trying to get comfortable playing every other day,
- 9:26Speaker 2: no practices, nothing, no way to get chemistry. So it's
- 9:29Speaker 2: gonna be interesting to see. But yeah, the Savers are hot.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I'm on the wagon. If I said it, I kept
- 9:37Speaker 2: saying it. Another Notster demurz Win, a Verca demurz Win,
- 9:41Speaker 2: and a Pinchewsky magoo Win, I said Josh Norris. If
- 9:44Speaker 2: he's healthy, they will make the playoffs. It's got to
- 9:46Speaker 2: say healthy. This will be your best pressure.
- 9:48Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now the no because you said
- 9:49Speaker 1: the Ducks in the summer, he said, Duck playff Tame,
- 9:51Speaker 1: which looks pretty good.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I'm hot right now if you if you.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Get Ducks and Savers make the playoffs, that's.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Legit, and said Toronto would miss so if that happens
- 9:59Speaker 2: and Florida would make so I'm kind of cooking right now.
- 10:03Speaker 1: If this works well, parlay right now, we're talking. It's
- 10:07Speaker 1: a brutal schedule right now. That's the bottom line for
- 10:09Speaker 1: teams that are cooking. It's great news like the Sabers,
- 10:11Speaker 1: if not the good luck and players are starting to
- 10:13Speaker 1: complain about it Devil's Golden or. Jake Allen commented about
- 10:16Speaker 1: it earlier this week, saying, this is definitely the toughest
- 10:18Speaker 1: season I've experienced. This from a guy this fourteenth season.
- 10:21Speaker 1: He continued, it's just as much mental as it is physical.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And obviously we've seen some of the injuries around the league.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Trust me, those two weeks off, the guys that aren't
- 10:28Speaker 1: playing in the Olympics are going to be really appreciated.
- 10:31Speaker 1: There's one month left of this condensed gouge before the
- 10:33Speaker 1: Olympic break. So what's the strategy right now for teams
- 10:36Speaker 1: heading into the break?
- 10:37Speaker 3: JDA.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I mean this is pretty exhaust You see guys basically
- 10:40Speaker 1: playing every other day.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I think if guys are injured, they're going to hang
- 10:44Speaker 2: around the respective city and do rehab. But I think
- 10:46Speaker 2: most guys are going to try to get the fuck
- 10:48Speaker 2: out and go get top sun. My diagnosis and would
- 10:54Speaker 2: be extra sun and go get to your toes in
- 10:58Speaker 2: the sand, go do some yoga, you know, eat a
- 11:01Speaker 2: lot of protein, rehydrate whatever you can to kind of
- 11:05Speaker 2: get your body light stretching. But it's gonna be a
- 11:08Speaker 2: fucking sprint, especially the guys that are playing in the Olympics.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Like you really got to think about that. Like this season,
- 11:15Speaker 2: I you know, I can make a soft prediction that
- 11:18Speaker 2: whoever's got the most players going to the Olympics, Like
- 11:22Speaker 2: I worry that, you know, they won't have enough choose
- 11:25Speaker 2: to win the Cup, you know what I mean, Like
- 11:26Speaker 2: you look at a lot of teams that have a
- 11:28Speaker 2: lot of guys going. You look at Florida will have
- 11:30Speaker 2: a lot of players out there. You're gonna have Colorado,
- 11:33Speaker 2: these big teams Dallas. If listen, if I'm Dallas and
- 11:36Speaker 2: Jason Robertson gets snubbed yet again, which I don't think
- 11:38Speaker 2: he should. But if he gets snubbed again, I'm riding.
- 11:41Speaker 2: But if they get stubbed, I'm if I'm I'm like, great,
- 11:43Speaker 2: he doesn't get to go always healthy. They can go
- 11:46Speaker 2: on a run and potentially win a Cup. I think
- 11:47Speaker 2: it's gonna be interesting to see. I think the catalyst
- 11:51Speaker 2: this year will really be who can come out of
- 11:53Speaker 2: the Olympics the healthiest. That'll be the team that does
- 11:58Speaker 2: the best and potentially can steal a Stanley Cup. I
- 12:01Speaker 2: think over these top teams if if something happens, because
- 12:05Speaker 2: this is the first time they're back at the Olympics
- 12:06Speaker 2: as well in a while. The NHL players, they're gonna
- 12:09Speaker 2: be It's on all their minds. It's all they're all
- 12:12Speaker 2: thinking of. I know they all want to win a
- 12:14Speaker 2: Cup too, but they're all thinking of the Olympics. They
- 12:16Speaker 2: all want to be a part of it. You can
- 12:18Speaker 2: see how guys have elevated their game because they want
- 12:20Speaker 2: to be on that team. They're gonna play their fucking
- 12:22Speaker 2: ass off and it'd be hard pressed. So it's gonna
- 12:26Speaker 2: be interesting to see what happens post Olympic. But this
- 12:31Speaker 2: schedule has been brutal, and it always is. It comes
- 12:33Speaker 2: with the territory. But it's gonna be interesting to see
- 12:37Speaker 2: how guys heal up and how teams look after the break.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Speaking of Autawa Centers right now, challenge time, right now,
- 12:46Speaker 1: three game losing streak, they're outside looking in for a
- 12:48Speaker 1: playoff spot. I was just in Winnipeg saw speaking of
- 12:51Speaker 1: the Oilers, Oilers Jets and that Winnipeg team right now
- 12:54Speaker 1: limping towards the finish line. Meantime outaway is where I'll
- 12:57Speaker 1: be next week for Amazon Prime, Red Wings and Senators
- 13:00Speaker 1: will not be seeing Linas Ulmerk there. He's taking in
- 13:02Speaker 1: definite lea from the team to attend to matters, and
- 13:05Speaker 1: a statement of the club said Linas has the full
- 13:07Speaker 1: support of our organization during this time private matter. We
- 13:10Speaker 1: won't e speculate, but the nature of olmarks leave. But
- 13:13Speaker 1: this is an Autowa team that made the playoffs last year.
- 13:15Speaker 3: J D.
- 13:15Speaker 1: He is an eight to eighty one say percentage, just
- 13:18Speaker 1: back up Levi at Marilina eight sixty nine percent. They
- 13:21Speaker 1: were not getting good goaltending already? Are the sins cooked?
- 13:25Speaker 2: I mean, all Mark's so streaky and then you get
- 13:27Speaker 2: the health. I man, I don't. I don't know this
- 13:30Speaker 2: Ottawa team, they you know, they had moments there on
- 13:33Speaker 2: that streak they looked great, Brady Kuld Chuck came back.
- 13:37Speaker 2: They kind of skid it a bit, started winning. I man,
- 13:40Speaker 2: it's this is kind of one of those teams that
- 13:42Speaker 2: could benefit from a splash move, like trade a superstar,
- 13:45Speaker 2: maybe find something that works. There's no goalies available, so
- 13:48Speaker 2: you're gonna have to live with Linas Olmark. But Linas Olmark,
- 13:51Speaker 2: you know when he is on is a very good goaltender.
- 13:56Speaker 1: But how can be gone if this is like a
- 13:58Speaker 1: mental health leave?
- 13:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, And that's the problem is maybe why
- 14:01Speaker 2: he's so streaky is that he's a hard time dealing
- 14:03Speaker 2: with the pressure and anxiety. So you know, do I
- 14:06Speaker 2: think you know where where else can you find a
- 14:09Speaker 2: goalie right now? You look at Philly maybe one of
- 14:11Speaker 2: their teams. You can look at Vegas. You know they
- 14:14Speaker 2: got their three Aiden Hill, Carter Hart, and Akira Schmid.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Once Aiden Hill's back, you know, there's a world in
- 14:21Speaker 2: which you can go get one of those three goalies,
- 14:23Speaker 2: you know, the New Jersey Devils, who you know, after
- 14:26Speaker 2: that lost last night, I think they're fucking done. I
- 14:28Speaker 2: think this team needs they need a high end player
- 14:32Speaker 2: bad and I just don't think they're good enough. And
- 14:36Speaker 2: I didn't think they were good He sure dropping the clubs.
- 14:40Speaker 2: No they got no, they got no nuts right now.
- 14:42Speaker 2: No one's stepping up. It can't be Brendan Dillon all
- 14:44Speaker 2: the time. And you know, it's got to be somebody
- 14:47Speaker 2: else to have a little piss and vinegar. And they're
- 14:48Speaker 2: not looking good right now. And they got two goalies,
- 14:50Speaker 2: Markstrom and Allen. You know you can go poach one
- 14:53Speaker 2: of those guys. So there's some goalies around the league.
- 14:56Speaker 2: It's going to require a player. You know, if I'm Ottawa,
- 14:59Speaker 2: do I look to maybe go get a Mark Strom,
- 15:02Speaker 2: Aura Allen or you go look maybe Buffalo as well.
- 15:05Speaker 2: They got three goalies, so there could be a potential
- 15:08Speaker 2: move there. So it's gonna be it's gonna be interesting.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I think we're at that crux of the season where
- 15:12Speaker 2: a team that's kind of up and down, like Ottawa,
- 15:15Speaker 2: like New Jersey, you're gonna see them make a move
- 15:17Speaker 2: because they need to if they want to make the
- 15:19Speaker 2: playoffs and not fall out of this race completely.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I'm with you and you want to kind of get
- 15:24Speaker 1: some momentum. I finally made the playoffs last year. For you, Audawa,
- 15:26Speaker 1: it would be frustrated to.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Take a step back.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we'll get to our guest Mike Commodo in
- 15:30Speaker 1: just a second. But one more topic. JJ's payday. The
- 15:33Speaker 1: Lightning signed defenseman Jj Moser eight year extension, average annual
- 15:37Speaker 1: value of six point seventy five million dollars a year,
- 15:40Speaker 1: twenty five years of age. Nice fit in the Lightning
- 15:42Speaker 1: Blue Lines and s arriving at twenty twenty four. Part
- 15:44Speaker 1: the mckel's circuit Jeff trade with Utah Darren Rattis is
- 15:49Speaker 1: obvious having a fantastic year, and Moses been playing with Radish.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Those guys just stepped up obviously with Headmond's injury. What
- 15:55Speaker 1: do you make of Moser? Seems like this is a
- 15:57Speaker 1: good price and a great deal for.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Him, well deserved, you know, a great pick up, one
- 16:02Speaker 2: of the sneakier pickups in that Surgate you have trade.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I think you know you're starting to see that trade
- 16:08Speaker 2: tilt in favor of Tampa a little bit. You know,
- 16:11Speaker 2: Sergachev obviously is great, but uh, you know, JJ Moser
- 16:15Speaker 2: has really stepped up and all those injury riddled defensive
- 16:20Speaker 2: decors for Tampa Bay Lightning. You know, you're missing Headman,
- 16:23Speaker 2: you're missing McDonough for a large stints, you're missing Chernac
- 16:26Speaker 2: And he comes in and him and him and Radish
- 16:28Speaker 2: just just absolutely kind of carried this team to where
- 16:32Speaker 2: they are right now. You thought they'd be cooked, done
- 16:35Speaker 2: fieni bon soois, but they are alive and well, all
- 16:39Speaker 2: thanks to JJ Moser. You know, opportunity meets timing and
- 16:43Speaker 2: preparation and he was ready to go when he was
- 16:45Speaker 2: called upon to lead this team from the back end,
- 16:48Speaker 2: and he's doing it. He's a great you know, he's
- 16:50Speaker 2: a really under I hate giving Bill Armstrong any kind
- 16:53Speaker 2: of credit ever in my life because Bill Armstrong, you know,
- 16:56Speaker 2: I hit him with my car if I saw him. No,
- 16:59Speaker 2: just kidding, I wouldn't do that for for legal purposes.
- 17:01Speaker 2: I wouldn't do that. I would just but he's uh,
- 17:07Speaker 2: it was a great pick up by him. It was
- 17:08Speaker 2: a great find by him in Arizona. JJ Moser a
- 17:10Speaker 2: great find. I'm you know, I think he and it
- 17:14Speaker 2: was a good deal, good trade going for Sergachev and
- 17:17Speaker 2: making a splash, and I think most are just It's
- 17:20Speaker 2: what I remember Bill Armstrong talking about him and kind
- 17:23Speaker 2: of quickly near the end of my career when I
- 17:25Speaker 2: was around the team and just saying, like, watch out
- 17:27Speaker 2: for this kid. He's a really smart, good player, good responsibly,
- 17:30Speaker 2: can play two ways. So congratulations to him getting that paper.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Boom boo.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Good stuff for JJ Moser in company. Still to come
- 17:37Speaker 1: here an NHL inscript, we'll talk to a comedy Mike Commodore,
- 17:41Speaker 1: terrific guest. He's really funny, entertaining as an excellent podcast
- 17:44Speaker 1: called Clearing the Crease. He'll tell us the story about
- 17:46Speaker 1: driving an uber and how a teenage girl out at him.
- 17:49Speaker 1: That's coming up after this. Our next guest. Was drafted
- 18:06Speaker 1: in the second round forty second of braw by the
- 18:07Speaker 1: New Jersey Devils in the nineteen ninety nine NHL Draft.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Went on to collect twenty three goals, one hundred and
- 18:12Speaker 1: six points, and six hundred and eighty three Peli mites
- 18:15Speaker 1: in four hundred and eighty four games the Devils, Flames, Hurricanes, Senators, Bluejackets,
- 18:20Speaker 1: Red Wings, and Lightning Stanley Cup winner, one of the
- 18:23Speaker 1: most outspoken voices in the hockey sphere. Also is a
- 18:26Speaker 1: great podcast called Clearing the Crease with my old buddy
- 18:29Speaker 1: from the Score, James Sebalskin Andrew Raycrop.
- 18:31Speaker 3: That's right, it's Mike Commodore Commy. Good to see you.
- 18:34Speaker 3: What's up guys, Happy New Year. I'm pretty sure I
- 18:36Speaker 3: didn't score twenty three goals either. I think they got
- 18:39Speaker 3: that wrong. I'm pretty sure the number is twenty one,
- 18:41Speaker 3: but nobody cares, so twenty three is close enough.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Well, it's great to see. I like the fact, as
- 18:47Speaker 1: I said, you're doing a podcast, you're always outspoken. You
- 18:50Speaker 1: believe the NHL missed a big opportunity by not having
- 18:53Speaker 1: games played on Christmas, which they used to do for years.
- 18:55Speaker 1: This year was really cannibalizing in the sports Mark TripleHead
- 18:58Speaker 1: of NFL, quintuppleheader of NBA, and you thought there should
- 19:01Speaker 1: have been hockey games as.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Well, well, not on Christmas. I think on Christmas eve Day.
- 19:06Speaker 3: I was sitting there Christmas eve Day here in Scottsdale,
- 19:09Speaker 3: and I understand that maybe every year. Andrew Raycroft actually
- 19:13Speaker 3: brought up a good point. Maybe every year isn't a
- 19:15Speaker 3: great idea of let's say if Christmas Eve falls on
- 19:18Speaker 3: like a Sunday or something with football and whatnot. But
- 19:21Speaker 3: I was sitting at Moxie's here in Phoenix after wandering
- 19:25Speaker 3: around the mall in the morning. It's like the last
- 19:27Speaker 3: place I wanted to be, and I'm sitting there. So
- 19:30Speaker 3: I sit down at Moxi's to have a beer. I'm like, ah,
- 19:33Speaker 3: see what's on TV? And it's like football reruns and whatnot,
- 19:37Speaker 3: you old UFC fights. I'm sitting there, I'm like, what's
- 19:40Speaker 3: on today? And so I looked at my phone and
- 19:43Speaker 3: the only thing that was on was at six pm
- 19:46Speaker 3: Mountain time was the Hawaii Bowl California versus Hawaii, which, hey,
- 19:51Speaker 3: look that's great, awesome, good for them, and I'm happy
- 19:54Speaker 3: to watch the Hawaii Bowl. But there's a full day
- 19:58Speaker 3: that's wide open. So I'm sitting there and I'm like,
- 20:00Speaker 3: I wonder, now, I know all this has to be
- 20:02Speaker 3: like collectively bargained, but I'm like, this is like days
- 20:05Speaker 3: like this, this is a massive opportunity. Like I get
- 20:08Speaker 3: it's Christmas eve Day, but at the end of the day,
- 20:11Speaker 3: like and if the players are don't want to do it,
- 20:13Speaker 3: then don't do it. But I don't know. I'm just
- 20:15Speaker 3: thinking from you know, from my playing days, and what
- 20:18Speaker 3: I would think if I was still playing is like, okay,
- 20:21Speaker 3: so let's say I don't get the twenty fourth off,
- 20:24Speaker 3: but I get the twenty seventh off. Like, I don't
- 20:26Speaker 3: really care. That's fine. A day off is a day off.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I get it. I've never had kids or a family either.
- 20:31Speaker 3: I understand Christmas Eve and Sanna and all that stuff.
- 20:34Speaker 3: But you know, let's make the games early. And I
- 20:37Speaker 3: was thinking, you know, two three games with like I mean,
- 20:40Speaker 3: i just fired off up the top of my head.
- 20:42Speaker 3: I'm like, have the Rangers play the Islanders. Maybe the
- 20:45Speaker 3: Devils play the Phillies. I'm thinking like or sorry, the
- 20:48Speaker 3: Devil's play the Flyers. Sorry? Yeah, And like I was thinking,
- 20:51Speaker 3: like no planes, like you can drive to the game
- 20:54Speaker 3: or short like a train ride or something. Have you know?
- 20:58Speaker 3: The game start maybe at twelve Eastern, run them back
- 21:01Speaker 3: to back with the last one being the cut or
- 21:03Speaker 3: the Ducks versus the Kings out west, and then you
- 21:06Speaker 3: got kind of a day day long hockey. It's over
- 21:09Speaker 3: by you know, I guess it'd be over you know
- 21:11Speaker 3: if you have them go at three pm Pacific time
- 21:14Speaker 3: sixth eastern. Yeah, yeah, or something like that. But I
- 21:16Speaker 3: think I think they do that.
- 21:20Speaker 2: They do that kind of style of distance the day
- 21:22Speaker 2: of the twenty seventh when the guys come back. But
- 21:24Speaker 2: I honestly, when you tweeted that, I was like, you
- 21:28Speaker 2: know what I mean, it's such an open day to
- 21:31Speaker 2: do it in the morning and have morning and afternoon
- 21:33Speaker 2: games and then have the guys on the twenty seventh.
- 21:36Speaker 2: It's just it's like a travel day at night to
- 21:38Speaker 2: go to the game on the twenty eighth, so you
- 21:40Speaker 2: get the twenty seventh, so you get the twenty fourth night,
- 21:42Speaker 2: the twenty fifth, twenty sixth is off instead of doing
- 21:46Speaker 2: it flipped where you get twenty four to twenty five
- 21:47Speaker 2: to twenty six and then the twenty seventh you're traveling
- 21:50Speaker 2: because they do travel the day of the game. I
- 21:52Speaker 2: think it's something that worth talking about on the CBA
- 21:54Speaker 2: because I think the NHL has looked at trying to
- 21:57Speaker 2: find creative ways to like maximize the schedule. That's why
- 22:00Speaker 2: we play later in the year for the the Stanley
- 22:03Speaker 2: Cup Final. It's to be where there's no sports. So
- 22:06Speaker 2: I think it's like it's maximizing the days because I
- 22:11Speaker 2: don't think the guys would mind personally, because you know
- 22:13Speaker 2: not I hate ever quoting Lebron James, but he was
- 22:16Speaker 2: talking about playing on Christmas Day and he's like, it's
- 22:17Speaker 2: part of the part of the deal. We have to
- 22:20Speaker 2: do it. He's like, I actually like it. It's part
- 22:22Speaker 2: of like my tradition and it's a fun thing to do.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I'm like, guys would probably embrace it. Kid, you can
- 22:27Speaker 2: get your kids coming to the game, kids that fly in.
- 22:29Speaker 2: I think it would be a good idea. So actually
- 22:32Speaker 2: CBA had put it on baby, Yeah, Like I don't
- 22:35Speaker 2: think it. Yeah, And if teams maybe you have the
- 22:38Speaker 2: not you could do it however you want. But I'm
- 22:40Speaker 2: thinking maybe it's just like, hey, if it gets going,
- 22:43Speaker 2: it's like, look, you know, if you're playing for the
- 22:45Speaker 2: Ducks or the Kings, that you're going to be playing
- 22:46Speaker 2: on Christmas Eve Day.
- 22:47Speaker 3: That's that's just how it is. And I fired out
- 22:50Speaker 3: some you know, I know it's just Twitter, but you know,
- 22:52Speaker 3: I fired out, you know. And maybe fans don't want
- 22:55Speaker 3: to go to the games, but I think they are
- 22:56Speaker 3: very interested in going the games as long as they're early,
- 22:59Speaker 3: and you could, you know, if you're running the games,
- 23:01Speaker 3: like make it very kid friendly or you know, have
- 23:04Speaker 3: things going on very christmasy and targeted towards kids and whatnot.
- 23:08Speaker 3: And I don't know. When I was sitting there at
- 23:10Speaker 3: Moxie's crushing a couple of beers, I was just like,
- 23:13Speaker 3: this is this seems like a wasted opportunity to me.
- 23:16Speaker 3: But I don't run the league, so I don't care
- 23:18Speaker 3: what I think.
- 23:19Speaker 1: You're banging about the fact it was a terrible day
- 23:21Speaker 1: of sport.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Like awful day of sports, right.
- 23:23Speaker 1: You looked around like there's no basketball, there's no fun,
- 23:26Speaker 1: and exact, Geny's right, everybody's off. She's like, I just
- 23:28Speaker 1: wanted something on Hawaii. Was the one game eight o'clock
- 23:31Speaker 1: the only thing?
- 23:32Speaker 2: Yeah, Now kind of shifted into the NHL and and
- 23:37Speaker 2: teams that are doing bad things. I know you briefly
- 23:39Speaker 2: played in Columbus with Scott ar'neil. I mean, what do
- 23:42Speaker 2: you make of the Winnipeg Jets right now and what
- 23:45Speaker 2: the hell they're going through?
- 23:46Speaker 1: Poor Arnie Kingston guy, poor Arnie.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, well you're not going to get poor Arnie
- 23:51Speaker 3: out of me. I'll tell you that I had him
- 23:53Speaker 3: in Columbus and uh, Scott ar'neil is right next on
- 23:57Speaker 3: my list, right He's he's on par maybe in front
- 24:00Speaker 3: of Mike Babcock. For me, ah, I'm not as much
- 24:05Speaker 3: as I would love to just rip the coaching staff
- 24:08Speaker 3: right now, and I would love to see him get
- 24:10Speaker 3: canned because I think he is an arrogant scumbag. I'm
- 24:13Speaker 3: gonna pump the brakes. I mean, they need to get
- 24:17Speaker 3: just from looking at like, I'm not gonna sit here
- 24:19Speaker 3: and say I've watched a bunch of Jets games, but
- 24:22Speaker 3: it seems like there's they got three four guys there
- 24:24Speaker 3: that are that are producing, and after that there is
- 24:27Speaker 3: a steep dropoff. So if they could find I mean,
- 24:31Speaker 3: the thing is like with these everybody getting you know,
- 24:33Speaker 3: two points one point, and you know the separation is
- 24:36Speaker 3: basically nothing. You know, as long as they have that
- 24:39Speaker 3: Hella buck around, you know, I have a hard time
- 24:42Speaker 3: like writing them off, but they are it is starting
- 24:44Speaker 3: to get to the point here where if they don't
- 24:47Speaker 3: get on a heater, they could be in trouble. And
- 24:50Speaker 3: I like Winnipeg. I've I've went through there a lot.
- 24:52Speaker 3: When I went to school at the University of North Dakota.
- 24:55Speaker 3: I would fly in there or drive through there or whatever.
- 24:57Speaker 3: But man, I'll tell you what, if you're on a
- 25:00Speaker 3: bad Jets team that's a long winner in Winnipeg, I'll
- 25:03Speaker 3: tell you you got nowhere to lie.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Yeah, stuck in Manitoba. There's only so many earls you
- 25:11Speaker 1: can go to that right, Since you mentioned since you
- 25:13Speaker 1: mentioned Mike, your criticism Mike Bob Babcock back at twenty
- 25:16Speaker 1: nineteen was so notable that year we saw Bill Peters
- 25:19Speaker 1: design his behavior became public. Do you think your criticism
- 25:22Speaker 1: of Babs helped change what we consider inappropriate behavior from coaches?
- 25:28Speaker 3: Wow, that's a good question. Actually, nobody's ever asked me
- 25:30Speaker 3: that I think it has. Yeah, I'm gonna go before
- 25:35Speaker 3: you go ahead. Yeah, yeah, I mean that's all I had.
- 25:40Speaker 3: I had. I mean, I appreciate that. That was never
- 25:44Speaker 3: my intention, like at all, and a decade long war
- 25:49Speaker 3: on Twitter roasting Babs was never my intention, like at all.
- 25:54Speaker 3: I mean I was having I mean, I hate Mike Babcock,
- 25:56Speaker 3: there's no question about it. But I mean the whole
- 25:59Speaker 3: thing kind of started because I was I was in
- 26:02Speaker 3: Carolina to crank the Horn when Detroit was coming in
- 26:05Speaker 3: to open up the season and I was having a
- 26:07Speaker 3: drink and Chris Chelly O's message me like, hey, Babs
- 26:10Speaker 3: was coming back to Detroit. It was his first year
- 26:13Speaker 3: in Toronto. Anyways, long story short, I'm like, yeah, I
- 26:15Speaker 3: see that, and Chelly, who does not like him at
- 26:18Speaker 3: all either and has way more stories about him than
- 26:20Speaker 3: I do, Shelley was like, you should roast him on Twitter,
- 26:24Speaker 3: and I remember sitting looking at my phone and I'm like,
- 26:28Speaker 3: I mean, i'd like to, but I'm like, you know,
- 26:30Speaker 3: i'd kind of I've been out of the game for
- 26:32Speaker 3: like five years or so, but I'm like looking at
- 26:34Speaker 3: my phone and I'm like, Okay, if I go down
- 26:37Speaker 3: this road, I'm like, I need to be comfortable that
- 26:39Speaker 3: I never want a job in hockey again, because yeah,
- 26:42Speaker 3: there's the people that know me, but you know, most
- 26:45Speaker 3: of the league doesn't know me, and it's not a
- 26:47Speaker 3: good look going off roasting coaches on a public form,
- 26:51Speaker 3: roasting any realty really, But I was like, you know what,
- 26:53Speaker 3: screw it anyways, and that's how it's got started, and
- 26:56Speaker 3: I just stuck with it. I mean, I was taking
- 26:58Speaker 3: grenades from you know, Tron mape leaves to have a
- 27:01Speaker 3: pretty big fan base, and at the beginning there they
- 27:03Speaker 3: thought that I was God. So my mentions in Twitter
- 27:07Speaker 3: was just a bunch of land mines. But yeah, you know,
- 27:11Speaker 3: I guess maybe if nothing else, maybe because I kind
- 27:16Speaker 3: of went and did it, maybe some guys were a
- 27:18Speaker 3: little bit more comfortable going on Twitter, and you know,
- 27:22Speaker 3: if they had some frustrations and stuff like that, maybe
- 27:25Speaker 3: they were a little bit more comfortable doing it. But
- 27:28Speaker 3: like I said, I mean in general, like I don't
- 27:31Speaker 3: want to come up. I loved ninety nine percent of
- 27:34Speaker 3: my coaches. There was two there was Arneil and Babcock
- 27:36Speaker 3: that I didn't enjoy and we touched on both. Yeah,
- 27:40Speaker 3: we touched on both, you know. And it's not because
- 27:43Speaker 3: they were hard on me or anything like that. I
- 27:45Speaker 3: just think they're bad people, well both of them, but
- 27:48Speaker 3: Babs for sure. And you know it's I don't you know.
- 27:55Speaker 3: My intentions wasn't to get well, My intentions was to
- 27:57Speaker 3: get Babs canned. There's no question about that. That was
- 28:00Speaker 3: one of the best days ever when he got canned
- 28:02Speaker 3: in Toronto and then I mean he would pull in Columbus.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Was just pure insanity and gone again insanity. Yeah, and
- 28:10Speaker 3: that day was actually probably better than the Leaf's day,
- 28:12Speaker 3: just because that's probably the end for him. And I
- 28:16Speaker 3: don't feel bad for him at all. Dude, You've had
- 28:18Speaker 3: plenty of chances, You've made plenty of money, You've had
- 28:21Speaker 3: plenty of opportunities. You basically because of your ego and
- 28:25Speaker 3: your arrogance and your you think everybody's coming to watch you,
- 28:29Speaker 3: and you think you're the man and the you know,
- 28:31Speaker 3: it's all about power with him. I mean, he probably
- 28:34Speaker 3: just you know, he probably just screwed himself out of
- 28:38Speaker 3: the Hall of Fame. I don't know who's gonna like
- 28:40Speaker 3: vouch for him. I'm not sure. I mean maybe not
- 28:42Speaker 3: where at the end of the day. It's kind of crazy. Look,
- 28:45Speaker 3: if he gets an opportunity in Columbus, like literally, just
- 28:49Speaker 3: don't be an idiot and like be a decent person.
- 28:52Speaker 3: Just don't be an idiot. And like, you know, he
- 28:56Speaker 3: does no hockey. I can't. I'm not going to say
- 28:58Speaker 3: things that I don't think are true. He does know
- 29:00Speaker 3: the game of hockey and he does run a good practice.
- 29:03Speaker 3: I'll give him that. Just don't be an idiot. You're
- 29:06Speaker 3: gonna win some games. You're young enough where you probably
- 29:10Speaker 3: coach for quite a while longer rack up some wins.
- 29:13Speaker 3: You know, you're not probably not going in front of Bollman,
- 29:15Speaker 3: but you're gonna go up the list. And he's already
- 29:17Speaker 3: up the list decent, like a fair amount, and you're
- 29:19Speaker 3: like a no brainer. And now all of that, in
- 29:22Speaker 3: my opinion, is probably gone.
- 29:25Speaker 2: And you know, talking about that, like those two coaches,
- 29:29Speaker 2: you said you like ninety nine percent of your coaches
- 29:31Speaker 2: and they were great people, Like was that something that
- 29:34Speaker 2: when you played for them you were vocal about? Because
- 29:36Speaker 2: you know, when I I always had hard times with
- 29:39Speaker 2: certain coaches, seeing things that I didn't necessarily I just
- 29:43Speaker 2: didn't like. I didn't think there was respect behind it,
- 29:46Speaker 2: and it wasn't ever, it wasn't ever towards me, But
- 29:50Speaker 2: I ended up getting myself in trouble because I'd sit
- 29:53Speaker 2: up and say something like you did. And I'm just wondering,
- 29:56Speaker 2: like where that line was for you with coaches and
- 29:59Speaker 2: and what do you look for in a coach because
- 30:01Speaker 2: you said ninety nine percent were great, but you know
- 30:03Speaker 2: what was it about them that kind of just turned
- 30:06Speaker 2: you a little bit because it wasn't directly targeted towards you,
- 30:09Speaker 2: but it still was enough to kind of put.
- 30:11Speaker 3: A burr up your ass with them. Yeah, I mean
- 30:14Speaker 3: with with Babcock. No, I never did with Babcock. I
- 30:17Speaker 3: mean I had long story short, I had him twice.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Really both times, I really wasn't The first time, I
- 30:23Speaker 3: wasn't around. I was sent straight to Cincinnati, so I
- 30:26Speaker 3: wasn't even there. And then the second time, you know,
- 30:29Speaker 3: I was in Detroit, you know, and I knew I
- 30:32Speaker 3: had just got bought out of Columbus and I was
- 30:34Speaker 3: in and they had a bunch of veteran guys there
- 30:36Speaker 3: that had just won Cups like and so I just
- 30:39Speaker 3: you know, I just mind my bill. I knew this
- 30:41Speaker 3: was my last chance. So I was just kind of
- 30:44Speaker 3: trying to make it work. So I never said anything there.
- 30:47Speaker 3: With Arneil, I did because he was a first year
- 30:50Speaker 3: coach and I was kind of looked upon as being
- 30:53Speaker 3: a leader in Columbus. That's part of the reason why
- 30:55Speaker 3: they signed me. They had a young team and I was,
- 30:58Speaker 3: you know, a veteran at the time. And anyways, he
- 31:00Speaker 3: came in my third year and it was a catastrophe
- 31:03Speaker 3: from the beginning. He was extremely arrogant. Took me a
- 31:07Speaker 3: while to figure it out, but in my opinion, he
- 31:10Speaker 3: came in it. Scott O'Neil had a really good hockey career.
- 31:12Speaker 3: I think he played like seven hundred games of the
- 31:15Speaker 3: Miners and he played like seven hundred games in NHL.
- 31:18Speaker 3: I mean, that is an excellent career by anyone standards,
- 31:21Speaker 3: I think, And but I think in Scott O'Neil's mind,
- 31:25Speaker 3: he came into Columbus. It was his first time being
- 31:29Speaker 3: a head coach, and he didn't think that he got
- 31:32Speaker 3: paid enough when he was playing, and he came in.
- 31:37Speaker 3: He wasn't coming into like, hey, I want to make
- 31:40Speaker 3: this work. He was coming in like it's time to
- 31:43Speaker 3: get even, which is unfortunate because I thought we had
- 31:45Speaker 3: a pretty decent team there. And so who was the
- 31:49Speaker 3: first target. I mean, you got a thirty year old
- 31:52Speaker 3: defenseman that's the highest paid defenseman in your organization. Any's single,
- 31:56Speaker 3: doesn't have kids. This guy's got plenty of money. I
- 31:59Speaker 3: am target numero uno. So I was we had he
- 32:03Speaker 3: would like avoid me, and I basically had to like
- 32:07Speaker 3: force a couple meetings with him, and then by Christmas time,
- 32:10Speaker 3: I was gone zo And that was the beginning of
- 32:12Speaker 3: the end for me, those are the worst, the force meetings.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Oh oh dude, he would have me. I'm like, I
- 32:20Speaker 3: mean it was frustrating, Like I kept getting scratched and
- 32:23Speaker 3: we were losing, and like when I did get an
- 32:26Speaker 3: opportunity to play, I was pretty good. There was a
- 32:28Speaker 3: stretch in the fall and I'd broke my thumb in
- 32:31Speaker 3: a fight over in Sweden with Ryan Close. I missed
- 32:33Speaker 3: some time and then came back play good, then scratched again,
- 32:36Speaker 3: and I'm like, you know, it's we're sitting here, we're losing.
- 32:41Speaker 3: You have your highest paid defenseman in the organization scratched,
- 32:46Speaker 3: and you're not letting him play at all. I'm the
- 32:48Speaker 3: number seven or eight, I'm paired up with a forward
- 32:50Speaker 3: in practice, and basically it like came down to, yeah,
- 32:54Speaker 3: he wouldn't let me. Like so basically it was one
- 32:56Speaker 3: practice my d partner with Derek mackenzie, who was a forward,
- 33:00Speaker 3: and I just told Derek I go, hey, dude, don't
- 33:02Speaker 3: give me the puck today. And He's like, what I said,
- 33:04Speaker 3: don't give me the puck today. He goes, uh, okay,
- 33:06Speaker 3: And so for the first part of practice, every time
- 33:10Speaker 3: I got the puck. I would try a sauce pass,
- 33:12Speaker 3: so I don't care if the pass was across the
- 33:14Speaker 3: ice or if it was like three feet in front
- 33:16Speaker 3: of me the centerman. I was getting some air under it.
- 33:19Speaker 3: So I'm screwing up every drill and Scott Arneil slams
- 33:22Speaker 3: his stick on. He's screaming at me for the other
- 33:25Speaker 3: side of the guys goes off the ice and I
- 33:26Speaker 3: followed him right in, right into his office and we
- 33:29Speaker 3: had it out like I've never really talked to any
- 33:32Speaker 3: coach like that before, which maybe that didn't help me either,
- 33:35Speaker 3: But anyways, that relationship was done, and you could just
- 33:39Speaker 3: see what happened in Columbus. We had a meeting with
- 33:41Speaker 3: I had meeting with Scott Housen, who was the general
- 33:43Speaker 3: manager at the time. It was a fairly new GM
- 33:46Speaker 3: and his first year, Like I said, we made the playoffs.
- 33:48Speaker 3: It was the first time Columbus had ever made the playoffs.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Like things were kind of on the up there a
- 33:52Speaker 3: little bit. And you know, I had a meeting with Scott.
- 33:56Speaker 3: He's like, hey, like, Arneil doesn't want you round. I'm like, yeah,
- 33:59Speaker 3: no shit, I'm like, hey, you know, the moral of
- 34:02Speaker 3: the story was, I'm like, I go, Scott, we're telling
- 34:04Speaker 3: Scott this. I go, Hey, I go, you want to
- 34:06Speaker 3: know who looks bad in this? He's like, you're kind
- 34:09Speaker 3: of looking at me. I go, I do. I go,
- 34:10Speaker 3: you want to know who else looks bad in this?
- 34:13Speaker 3: And he kind of looking at me. I go, you do?
- 34:15Speaker 3: You signed me to this deal? And I'm gone, and
- 34:18Speaker 3: it's halfway through. I go, you look bad as well.
- 34:21Speaker 3: I go, you hired the wrong coach, hired a power
- 34:24Speaker 3: hungry coach who's trying to get even for whatever reason.
- 34:27Speaker 3: I go, your head's on the block. Next, I go,
- 34:29Speaker 3: you made a mistake. And sure enough, within a year
- 34:33Speaker 3: it was I think Arneil was there for a year
- 34:37Speaker 3: and maybe a month. And how everybody was gone. Rick
- 34:40Speaker 3: Nash was the whole organization was all blown up.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Everybody's gone, by the way, and Housen hasn't been everybody,
- 34:48Speaker 1: no Housing hasn't been an NHL GM since that tells
- 34:52Speaker 1: you where that goes? Yeah, our producer tal by the way, Mike,
- 34:55Speaker 1: he wrote a book called Breakaway, which is excellence all
- 34:57Speaker 1: but from behind the iron curtain, guys defecting, et cetera.
- 35:00Speaker 1: I am curious because you had Fatista as a coach
- 35:02Speaker 1: in New Jersey.
- 35:03Speaker 3: Yeah, what was he?
- 35:04Speaker 2: Like?
- 35:05Speaker 3: I loved him. I thought he was I thought he
- 35:08Speaker 3: was awesome. Uh yeah, I got a couple of stories
- 35:11Speaker 3: about Slava, you know, I had him. He was the
- 35:12Speaker 3: assistant coach in New Jersey. Like my first year. I
- 35:15Speaker 3: was up and down for my two years in New Jersey,
- 35:17Speaker 3: like fifty games up, fifty games down basically. And I
- 35:21Speaker 3: mean the head coach for most of it was Larry
- 35:24Speaker 3: Robinson and the assistant coach was Slavia Fatiga, the condor.
- 35:27Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you're like, you would have had to be
- 35:29Speaker 3: a total bonehead as a d man to like not
- 35:32Speaker 3: learn something like those are two best. He's the best.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Larry Robinson is awesome. He's he's the man like he
- 35:38Speaker 3: he liked me too, like he was the reason why
- 35:40Speaker 3: he even got any opportunity there at all. And anyways,
- 35:43Speaker 3: I think the world of both those guys. But yeah,
- 35:45Speaker 3: Slava was I mean he was an old school Russian,
- 35:48Speaker 3: like you know I was. I was young obviously, and
- 35:51Speaker 3: like you know, when I was up and during training
- 35:53Speaker 3: camps and stuff like that, like and and he liked me,
- 35:56Speaker 3: called meha I Meeshad You know, I go through practice,
- 35:59Speaker 3: and really my practice didn't start until the practice was done,
- 36:04Speaker 3: because like everybody else would go off and now it's
- 36:06Speaker 3: time to work on some like defenseman stuff with Slava
- 36:10Speaker 3: and which I loved. It was awesome and it was
- 36:12Speaker 3: harder than hell. He's got that old school where like
- 36:15Speaker 3: you just keep keep it moving. But he was great.
- 36:19Speaker 3: And I actually saw him again the last time I
- 36:22Speaker 3: seen him, you know, because he was here. I mean,
- 36:24Speaker 3: his career is obviously incredible, and I don't know how
- 36:27Speaker 3: much you know about what he's doing now, but you know,
- 36:29Speaker 3: he went back over to Russia and he was like
- 36:31Speaker 3: the Minister a sport. He was like, yeah, it's incredible. Yeah,
- 36:35Speaker 3: like he's he's boys with Putin, like they are tight.
- 36:39Speaker 3: And when I went over there playing in Russia, he
- 36:42Speaker 3: was like the I don't know if he was the
- 36:44Speaker 3: minister of sport for the country or if he was
- 36:47Speaker 3: like the head politician for lack of a better term,
- 36:50Speaker 3: for the whole region where Vladivostok is, which is the
- 36:53Speaker 3: whole region along the Pacific uh Pacific Ocean that's where
- 36:57Speaker 3: Vladivostok is. So he was kind of like the he
- 37:00Speaker 3: wasn't the owner of the team, but he was basically
- 37:03Speaker 3: like the face of it. So we'd see him once
- 37:04Speaker 3: in a while. And I'll tell you what I you know,
- 37:07Speaker 3: I know him as Slava, you know, my de coach
- 37:09Speaker 3: in New Jersey and obviously a Hockey Hall of Famer,
- 37:12Speaker 3: and I got a ton of respect for him. But
- 37:14Speaker 3: like you know, I talked to him and stuff like that,
- 37:16Speaker 3: and I'll never forget when I got over there. And
- 37:19Speaker 3: then once I was there, I was there a little
- 37:21Speaker 3: bit late and one of the de gates he came
- 37:23Speaker 3: in after one of the games. You know, it's a
- 37:25Speaker 3: bunch of Russians and we I think we had five
- 37:27Speaker 3: or six imports, and he walked in the room, and
- 37:31Speaker 3: I tell you that it was like a noisy room.
- 37:33Speaker 3: He walked in the room and you could hear a
- 37:34Speaker 3: pin drop, like those Russians were looking at him like
- 37:37Speaker 3: Jesus Christ just walked into the room. And he's just
- 37:41Speaker 3: kind of standing there and I'm like, Slava, I'm like,
- 37:44Speaker 3: you know, I'm just yelling how you doing this and that?
- 37:46Speaker 3: And the Russians are looking at me like there's something
- 37:48Speaker 3: wrong with me. But he came over a big smile,
- 37:50Speaker 3: and I got nothing but great things to say about him.
- 37:52Speaker 3: He's a good dude. Fancy that's funny. You just walk in.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Oh yeah, the Russians were like, oh yeah, yeah, I'm
- 38:01Speaker 3: like be asked a good guy.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, that wasn't the only time you were
- 38:07Speaker 2: kind of missed up with a dignitary. You went to
- 38:10Speaker 2: the White House at the Cup as a Cup champion,
- 38:12Speaker 2: You had the President compliment your hair. How was that
- 38:15Speaker 2: whole experience and and going there and being a part
- 38:19Speaker 2: of that whole process and celebration.
- 38:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it was awesome. I've actually been fortunate enough to
- 38:24Speaker 3: do it twice. So we were won a national title
- 38:28Speaker 3: at the University of North Dakota as well, So a
- 38:30Speaker 3: few of us got to go when Clinton was in
- 38:32Speaker 3: office and then in two thousand and six when Bush
- 38:35Speaker 3: was in office. Clinton was and it was two very
- 38:38Speaker 3: They were both great experiences, but they were two very
- 38:41Speaker 3: different experiences with Clinton just the timing of when we
- 38:45Speaker 3: were there. We were in the Oval office and there
- 38:48Speaker 3: and they're like, the whole team couldn't make it. I
- 38:50Speaker 3: wasn't in school anymore. And the scene basically the guys
- 38:53Speaker 3: that weren't on the team anymore came on the trip
- 38:56Speaker 3: to the White House because the rest of the guys
- 38:58Speaker 3: unfortunately had to go up the Anchorage to play to
- 39:00Speaker 3: play for the weekend, so it was less people. Yeah,
- 39:03Speaker 3: I know, it's a tough I just had a trip.
- 39:05Speaker 3: And some are still pissed off. They're like, that's a
- 39:07Speaker 3: jo I'm like, dude, I didn't make the rules. Like,
- 39:09Speaker 3: I agree, it is a joke. We should have tried
- 39:11Speaker 3: for a different day. But sorry. But since there was
- 39:14Speaker 3: less people, you know, we were in the Oval office.
- 39:16Speaker 3: We were supposed to have fifteen minutes. We ended up
- 39:18Speaker 3: in there for almost an hour, and you know, he
- 39:20Speaker 3: was telling stories and you know, talking about the room
- 39:23Speaker 3: and whatnot. It was really cool. And then yeah, with
- 39:26Speaker 3: Bush it was cool too. We had the whole team,
- 39:28Speaker 3: so we had a lot bunch more bunch more people
- 39:30Speaker 3: who were over in one of the wings. I knew
- 39:32Speaker 3: something was coming because I got a call from a
- 39:36Speaker 3: White House writer and like hey, you know, like you know,
- 39:39Speaker 3: and talking about my hair and this and that or whatever,
- 39:42Speaker 3: and so I was like, I knew something was coming.
- 39:45Speaker 3: And I laughed as it was going on, because you know,
- 39:48Speaker 3: he mentions my name and the hair thing or whatever,
- 39:50Speaker 3: and he turns over, you know, kind of turns around.
- 39:54Speaker 3: There's no chance he had any idea which guy was there, Like,
- 39:58Speaker 3: no clue, no clue. I kind of laughed. I'm like,
- 40:01Speaker 3: this dude has no idea who I am at all,
- 40:03Speaker 3: and so I just I got to laugh to myself.
- 40:05Speaker 3: But it was a cool experience for sure.
- 40:09Speaker 1: When you got to Detroit, Mike fans petition for you
- 40:11Speaker 1: to wear the number sixty four to honor the class
- 40:13Speaker 1: show Commodore sixty four a video game.
- 40:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:15Speaker 1: How much pressure was it to wear it? Why did
- 40:17Speaker 1: you decide against it?
- 40:19Speaker 3: Yeah? Uh, there was a decent I mean, yeah, in
- 40:24Speaker 3: looking back, I should have wore it. It was dumb
- 40:26Speaker 3: of me not to. Uh, there was a decent amount
- 40:28Speaker 3: of pressure for me to do it. The trainer gave
- 40:31Speaker 3: it the okay to the paper. I was kind of
- 40:32Speaker 3: hoping he would shut it down, but he's like, now
- 40:34Speaker 3: he could wear it if he wants. Oh wow, yeah,
- 40:36Speaker 3: so he got I got the okay. The only reason
- 40:39Speaker 3: why I didn't do it is because, like I said earlier,
- 40:42Speaker 3: you know, I had already had this run in with
- 40:44Speaker 3: Babcock convinced me to come to Detroit and Ken Holland
- 40:47Speaker 3: and I just got bought out, bought out. Sorry he
- 40:50Speaker 3: was better English and this I knew this was my
- 40:55Speaker 3: last chance. If this didn't work in some fashion, I
- 40:58Speaker 3: knew I was done. So going into it, I was like, man,
- 41:02Speaker 3: I'm like, uh it just I don't really want to
- 41:06Speaker 3: be looked at as like a yeah, like like kind
- 41:09Speaker 3: of a party favor, and you know, like I know
- 41:11Speaker 3: this is my last chance, like Commodore sixty four, Like
- 41:14Speaker 3: you know, maybe Babs won't like it, you know, like
- 41:16Speaker 3: I just want to kind of just do my thing. Now,
- 41:19Speaker 3: looking back, it didn't matter what number I wore, It
- 41:23Speaker 3: made no difference. So I apologize. I should have for
- 41:27Speaker 3: the fifteen or sixteen games that I did get out there,
- 41:30Speaker 3: it would have been cool to see Commodore sixty four.
- 41:33Speaker 3: I had like Commodore, like they came back with a
- 41:35Speaker 3: new computer then, like a mini one. They were like
- 41:38Speaker 3: messaging me on Twitter like to like, hey, you know,
- 41:41Speaker 3: maybe I missed out on a sponsorship deal. I don't know,
- 41:44Speaker 3: but yeah, I should have done it. That's my apologies.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Well, you should have got a sponsorship deal for Uber
- 41:50Speaker 2: because that's one of the more famous comedy stories. And
- 41:54Speaker 2: you know, I think I've talked maybe once in passing
- 41:57Speaker 2: about it, but I've seen stories. But for you, what
- 41:59Speaker 2: was when you did that? Explain how that came to
- 42:02Speaker 2: be number one and the number two was your most
- 42:04Speaker 2: memorable Uber customer. Okay, how it came to be was
- 42:10Speaker 2: I was a couple of years into retirement. I was
- 42:14Speaker 2: sitting down here in Phoenix and in my opinion and
- 42:18Speaker 2: probably I would say, I was drinking a little too much.
- 42:22Speaker 2: But at the same so I was trying to tone
- 42:25Speaker 2: it down. But at the same time, you know, I
- 42:27Speaker 2: was single, and I didn't want to just be sitting
- 42:29Speaker 2: at the house alone. So I look, I was trying
- 42:31Speaker 2: to find a way to stay off the bottle, but
- 42:34Speaker 2: still like you know, go out and be social and whatnot.
- 42:39Speaker 3: So I thought, well, why don't I just drive for Uber.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Then I can I can meet some people, I get
- 42:44Speaker 3: to go around town a little bit, and obviously I'm
- 42:46Speaker 3: not going to be on the bottle because I don't
- 42:48Speaker 3: want to end up in jail. So that was my
- 42:49Speaker 3: thinking on how I got started my most memorable Well,
- 42:54Speaker 3: and part of it too was like you know, like
- 42:56Speaker 3: I said, I was single, I'm like, well, you know,
- 42:58Speaker 3: maybe I'll meet some of a couple of yeah, maybe
- 43:01Speaker 3: I'll meet some women. So in that regard, my best
- 43:04Speaker 3: opportunities and looking back, were my first night. There were
- 43:07Speaker 3: a couple of opportunities, but like I just started doing this,
- 43:11Speaker 3: and I'm like, I didn't want to be a creep
- 43:13Speaker 3: right on night one, so I'm like, I you know
- 43:15Speaker 3: it just I just did the driving and was very professional.
- 43:19Speaker 3: My most memorable rides, I mean, I actually kind of funny.
- 43:23Speaker 3: I got a picture on my phone I would say
- 43:25Speaker 3: my most memorable bride would be and it kind of
- 43:28Speaker 3: ties in. We had a twenty year reunion just a
- 43:29Speaker 3: couple of weeks ago for our Cup team and Doug
- 43:31Speaker 3: Waite was on our team and we were laughing about it.
- 43:35Speaker 3: His wife sent me the picture. I had never had
- 43:37Speaker 3: it before. One of my rides, one of my nights,
- 43:40Speaker 3: I went, it's you know, it's pitch blackout. I'm going
- 43:43Speaker 3: to pick some people up or whatever over down kind
- 43:46Speaker 3: of wherever down in South Phoenix kind of Arcadia, and
- 43:49Speaker 3: I'm sitting outside and like a younger crew comes out.
- 43:52Speaker 3: It's about younger girls, like if I had to guess,
- 43:55Speaker 3: like fourteen fifteen, and there's like eight of them, you know,
- 43:58Speaker 3: and there's only I'm only supposed to carry like five.
- 44:00Speaker 3: I had like a Cadillac Escalade Hybrid deal or whatever.
- 44:04Speaker 3: And they're like, well, we have a few. I'm like,
- 44:06Speaker 3: just get in. I go, I don't care. We're not
- 44:08Speaker 3: going too far. It's not a big deal. So get in.
- 44:10Speaker 3: And the girl that sits in the front seat, you know, hey,
- 44:13Speaker 3: how you you know what's going on? Somehow hockey came up.
- 44:15Speaker 3: I didn't bring it up. Somehow I'm like, oh, I'm like, well,
- 44:18Speaker 3: how do you know about hockey? Well, my uncle used
- 44:20Speaker 3: to play hockey. Oh no, oh yeah. I'm like, oh,
- 44:23Speaker 3: some why, here's perk up. I'm like, oh, please, I
- 44:25Speaker 3: hope I played with this guy. And she I go,
- 44:28Speaker 3: oh really, I go, well, who's your uncle? He goes,
- 44:31Speaker 3: She's Doug Wait, and I burst out laughing. I go, hey,
- 44:35Speaker 3: I go, can you please text him or call him? However,
- 44:39Speaker 3: I go, tell him, you just got picked up in
- 44:41Speaker 3: an uber by Mike Commodore and let me know what
- 44:44Speaker 3: he says. So she called him, but it was in
- 44:47Speaker 3: the evening and Doug was coaching the Islanders at the time,
- 44:49Speaker 3: so Doug was on the bench, so he didn't answer.
- 44:52Speaker 3: So he took a picture, send it to his wife
- 44:54Speaker 3: and whatnot. And I actually just got the picture a
- 44:56Speaker 3: couple of days ago. It's pretty funny. Yes, yeah, it
- 44:59Speaker 3: was pretty funny. Oh that's so good? Is that is unbelievable?
- 45:03Speaker 2: About I was because my next question was going to
- 45:06Speaker 2: be what you answered, was like, did you pick anybody up?
- 45:08Speaker 3: You knew? They were like, holy shit? Called me what
- 45:11Speaker 3: the fuck's going on? There was another There was another one.
- 45:14Speaker 3: Some people from Columbus. Uh, you know, just a couple
- 45:17Speaker 3: of people. It made me laugh. Picked them up. You know,
- 45:20Speaker 3: I'm taking them with a grocery store. I'm waiting for
- 45:22Speaker 3: him to get at some groceries and then they want
- 45:24Speaker 3: to ride back. I'm like, yeah, man, I'll just wait.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Not a big deal. And so I you know there,
- 45:28Speaker 3: where are you from Columbus? I'm like, oh, Columbus, Columbus.
- 45:30Speaker 3: While yeah, yeah, I'm like, oh, I used to live there.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Oh.
- 45:33Speaker 3: They're like, oh really, what did you do there? I'm
- 45:35Speaker 3: like wow, I'm like, actually, I used to play for
- 45:37Speaker 3: the Blue Jackets. And they're sitting in the back seat
- 45:40Speaker 3: and I can see them. I look in the rear
- 45:41Speaker 3: view mirror. I could see them looking at each other like, sheah,
- 45:44Speaker 3: right to my uber driver. This guy played for the
- 45:48Speaker 3: Blue Jackets.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Yeah right.
- 45:49Speaker 3: So they're like, oh, so you know you know Rick Nash.
- 45:52Speaker 3: Then I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do know Rick.
- 45:55Speaker 3: What about Derek Brossard? And they named off a couple
- 45:59Speaker 3: of names. I'm like, look, I go, I know you
- 46:00Speaker 3: don't believe me. I go, you can just google me.
- 46:02Speaker 2: I go. I swear I'm not full of shit here.
- 46:05Speaker 3: And anyways, we had to laugh about that.
- 46:08Speaker 2: That's so good, so good. Hey, talk about you had
- 46:13Speaker 2: your twenty year reunion for you know, winning the Cup
- 46:16Speaker 2: and you talk about seeing Dougie Waite and all that.
- 46:19Speaker 2: How great was that? I saw you were miked up
- 46:21Speaker 2: some great candid things. But how tight was that team
- 46:23Speaker 2: and still, you know, twenty years later. Just talk about
- 46:27Speaker 2: the reunion and the feelings all being back together.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it was awesome. I mean, the reunion was great.
- 46:33Speaker 3: You know, it ended up being a three day thing.
- 46:34Speaker 3: The Cup was there, which makes it kind of cool.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Unfortunately I couldn't wait. It's a oh yeah, yeah, guys
- 46:39Speaker 3: were some guys got in there. So the celebration day
- 46:43Speaker 3: was on Tuesday. It was the Canes versus the Blue Jackets,
- 46:45Speaker 3: but there was also a game on Sunday versus the Sharks,
- 46:49Speaker 3: so some guys like Ray Whitney went in there on
- 46:51Speaker 3: like Friday, so you know, you can imagine that goes
- 46:53Speaker 3: right through Tuesday. I didn't get there till Monday morning, unfortunately.
- 46:57Speaker 3: So there was a couple guys that I missed that
- 46:59Speaker 3: were there Sunday but couldn't make Jimmy Rutherford, for instance.
- 47:03Speaker 3: So I'm sad I missed them. But it ended up
- 47:05Speaker 3: being a real good turnout. You know, you never know
- 47:07Speaker 3: you're gonna get everybody. People are busy, there's things going on.
- 47:09Speaker 3: You got guys that are living in Europe, like it's
- 47:11Speaker 3: not convenient. But it was a really good turnout. Yeah,
- 47:14Speaker 3: it was awesome. I mean there was guys that you know,
- 47:17Speaker 3: I guess as as years go by, like Nick Wahaleen
- 47:20Speaker 3: for instance. You know, I hadn't seen him since I
- 47:22Speaker 3: played against him, and he came over. It came for
- 47:26Speaker 3: for the whole thing there and I saw him, and
- 47:28Speaker 3: you know, who knows if I'll ever see him again.
- 47:31Speaker 3: It might not. I mean I don't know if I've
- 47:32Speaker 3: I haven't seen him. I played with them and seen
- 47:35Speaker 3: or heard from him since. Yeah, Yeah, he's he's been,
- 47:38Speaker 3: he's doing good. He's he's remarried. He's he's out in
- 47:41Speaker 3: his hometown there in Sweden, and he's he's he's got
- 47:44Speaker 3: like a trucking company his family. That's so he's doing
- 47:46Speaker 3: some trucking for my front loading. Maybe, I think is
- 47:49Speaker 3: how I understood it. But like, I don't know if
- 47:52Speaker 3: I'm ever going to see him again, unfortunately, and so
- 47:55Speaker 3: it's it's great to catch up. You know, he sit around,
- 47:58Speaker 3: have a few beers and you know, stories that you've
- 48:01Speaker 3: forgotten come up and somebody said him as something which
- 48:03Speaker 3: kick something off in your mind. And so it was great.
- 48:06Speaker 3: The Canes did a great job. It was very nice
- 48:09Speaker 3: to them to do it. They make us play an
- 48:11Speaker 3: alumni game, which I can't say I'm a huge fan
- 48:13Speaker 3: of that. But other than that, it was good.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Last one for you, Mike, you want a World championship
- 48:20Speaker 1: with Canada. In two thousand and seven, JD spoken to
- 48:22Speaker 1: how nice is to play for your country. Obviously we're
- 48:24Speaker 1: all patriotic as Canadians can't wait for hopefully Canada to
- 48:26Speaker 1: win Italy. But what was that experience like for you?
- 48:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it was awesome. It was. It was the only
- 48:31Speaker 3: time that you know, I had ever been any kind
- 48:35Speaker 3: of invitation. I think it was with Team Canada. Like
- 48:38Speaker 3: I'm it was probably the only time I was ever
- 48:40Speaker 3: even on their radar. I was lucky in the fact
- 48:44Speaker 3: that the tournament was it happened at a you know,
- 48:47Speaker 3: I was actually for me. I was playing well at
- 48:49Speaker 3: that time of my career. I just come off win
- 48:52Speaker 3: in a Cup in two thousand and six, and I
- 48:53Speaker 3: had a good year in two thousand and seven. I
- 48:56Speaker 3: was lucky because the tournament was in Russia, and if
- 49:00Speaker 3: I'm being honest, a lot of the real good defensemen
- 49:02Speaker 3: didn't want to go, so Steve Eiserman went down the list,
- 49:06Speaker 3: and I still I thank you Ray Whitney. Every once
- 49:08Speaker 3: in a while, Iman called Ray Whitney and was like, hey, look,
- 49:12Speaker 3: I'm picking between Mike Commodore and Andrew ference who should
- 49:15Speaker 3: I take? And nothing against Andrew Ferrence. I played with
- 49:18Speaker 3: him in Calgary, and Andrew is an excellent defenseman and
- 49:20Speaker 3: he would have been a good choice as well. But
- 49:22Speaker 3: raised my boy and raised like, kid me, you got
- 49:26Speaker 3: to get get Mike on the team. And Steve's like, okay,
- 49:28Speaker 3: I'll give him a call. So Steve calls asked me, Hey,
- 49:31Speaker 3: you know, are you interested? I said, yeah, yeah, mister Eiserman.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Of course, while the tournament's in Russia. I'm like, hey, Steve,
- 49:39Speaker 3: I don't care where the tournament is. I'm coming. I
- 49:42Speaker 3: could care less what the venue is, I'll be there.
- 49:46Speaker 3: So yeah, it was fun. It was our team got
- 49:49Speaker 3: ripped on when it was picked because like it wasn't
- 49:51Speaker 3: any it was. There are definitely some big name Gate
- 49:55Speaker 3: guys on it, but the big name guys were like younger.
- 49:58Speaker 3: So the fans were looking at the team and they're like,
- 50:01Speaker 3: Mike commodorees playing on this team, like are you kidding me?
- 50:06Speaker 3: And anyway, so they thought we were gonna get smoked.
- 50:09Speaker 3: I actually played a lot. Eric Brewer and I were partners,
- 50:12Speaker 3: Like our decore was me Eric Brewer. Uh enough was there?
- 50:17Speaker 3: Weber showed up after the first time of the playoffs. Yeah,
- 50:20Speaker 3: but he elbowed. He elbowed some guy and they had
- 50:23Speaker 3: and got some He barely played, honestly, Yeah, I got
- 50:25Speaker 3: kicked out. I think he played like a period. He
- 50:28Speaker 3: elbowed some German and it was done well. Barrett Jackman
- 50:32Speaker 3: was on that team. The thickest decor ever. Oh yeah,
- 50:35Speaker 3: we had. We had a little meatback there for sure,
- 50:38Speaker 3: and uh, you know, as as things would work out,
- 50:41Speaker 3: we ended up going nine to zero and won the
- 50:42Speaker 3: whole thing, and it was awesome. It was a really
- 50:45Speaker 3: good experience for sure.
- 50:47Speaker 1: This has been a great experience for us clearing the
- 50:49Speaker 1: crease of Mike Commodore's podcast accords you can listen. Fantastic
- 50:52Speaker 1: job with ray Croft and James Seabalski. Mike, these stories
- 50:55Speaker 1: were unbelievable. Wish your great success with the pod and
- 50:57Speaker 1: I uh, I'll never think of Doug Waite the same way.
- 51:00Speaker 1: That was a great story.
- 51:01Speaker 3: Well, thank you very much, guys, and thanks a lot
- 51:02Speaker 3: for having me happy you new.
- 51:12Speaker 1: All right? Tom now fore, little centophile in sixty Bradley Cooper.
- 51:15Speaker 1: I'm a big fano because he loves the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 51:17Speaker 1: who have now won the NFC East. He's also a
- 51:19Speaker 1: pretty funny guy. Obviously loved him in The Hangover, and
- 51:21Speaker 1: he's a rather charming guy silverl Lioness playbook who doesn't
- 51:23Speaker 1: love it? Having said that a rare misstep for him
- 51:25Speaker 1: as a director, he was critically acclaimed film A Star
- 51:28Speaker 1: Is Born with Lady Gaga Maestro, which I didn't love,
- 51:31Speaker 1: but he'd appreciate the craftsmanship. Now he makes a film
- 51:33Speaker 1: with our buddy Will Arnett. We're still trying to get
- 51:36Speaker 1: the podcast Is This Thing on? Unfortunately, wish this Thing
- 51:39Speaker 1: was off. The new film is available right now on Netflix,
- 51:41Speaker 1: and it's a big misstep for both. Arnette co wrote
- 51:44Speaker 1: the film and developed the screenplay with Bradley Cooper, but
- 51:47Speaker 1: it's yet another film about middle aged white people and
- 51:51Speaker 1: unnecessary navel gazing. Basically, Will Arnette Laura Dern split up
- 51:56Speaker 1: and he ends up reserving the stand up comedy to
- 52:00Speaker 1: try to deal with his frustrations. Yep, it's about as
- 52:02Speaker 1: bad as it sounds. I've seen this before. I was better.
- 52:05Speaker 1: It was called Punchline, and honestly, I know that Tal
- 52:08Speaker 1: is not a fan of Noah Bomback, but watching the way,
- 52:10Speaker 1: I kept thinking, if Noah Bomback made this, it'd be
- 52:13Speaker 1: a better movie. It'd be something that can to marriage
- 52:14Speaker 1: story because I can see you good divorced movies. This
- 52:16Speaker 1: movie aims to be a marriage story, but it falls
- 52:18Speaker 1: well short. Again. Arnett is a great comedian. He's a
- 52:21Speaker 1: massive Leaves fan. I'll watch arrested development all day. He's
- 52:25Speaker 1: featured in the Cinephile book. But this is a dramatic
- 52:27Speaker 1: turn from him which doesn't quite work. Laura Dern looks
- 52:30Speaker 1: ingnificantly older than him. She gives a group performance. This
- 52:33Speaker 1: one is very predictable and painful. I would skip. Is
- 52:35Speaker 1: this thing on currently available on Netflix? In the meantime,
- 52:41Speaker 1: I do want to recommend a film which was fabulous
- 52:42Speaker 1: called Blue Moon. It stars Ethan Hawk on My Favorite Actress.
- 52:46Speaker 1: He's never been nominated for Best Actor. He's nominated twice
- 52:48Speaker 1: Your Best Supporting Actor Training Day. He's been nominated for screenplay,
- 52:52Speaker 1: of course, the Great Movies. He'd maybe with Richard Linklayter
- 52:54Speaker 1: the Before Sunset Trilogy. But this is his chance, first
- 52:57Speaker 1: ever Best Actor nomination for film called Blue Moon, in
- 52:59Speaker 1: which he plays a five foot two guy with a
- 53:01Speaker 1: bad comb over and he's wearing a fat suit. Actors
- 53:04Speaker 1: love it when they get to play ugly. Ethan Hawk
- 53:06Speaker 1: has been a charming, good looking guy for thirty five
- 53:08Speaker 1: years since Goodwill Hunting. No, I'm gonna go ugly, I'm
- 53:10Speaker 1: gonna go short. I'm gonna play Lorenz Heart, who was
- 53:13Speaker 1: a part of the group. Everyone knows Rogers and Hammerstein,
- 53:16Speaker 1: if you know musical theater. But before that, it was
- 53:18Speaker 1: Loren's Heart. It was Rogers and Heart. And so the
- 53:21Speaker 1: movie takes place. It's basically a wonner. It's just a
- 53:24Speaker 1: one night play. And he's sitting there at the bar
- 53:27Speaker 1: and it's when Oklahoma is premiering. Oklahoma is the new
- 53:30Speaker 1: musical from Rogers and Hammerstein. So he's lamented about his life.
- 53:32Speaker 1: He's talking the bartender play but the great Bobby kind
- 53:34Speaker 1: of Valley, and he's talked with the loves of his life,
- 53:36Speaker 1: et cetera. It's not a film for everybody. But I
- 53:39Speaker 1: gotta tell you Hawk's performance is unbelievable. He basically carries
- 53:42Speaker 1: the film. It's like a one act play. Market qualities
- 53:44Speaker 1: in the film from the substance doesn't show her uff
- 53:46Speaker 1: this time, but she is in the movie.
- 53:47Speaker 2: But Hawk is just no moth no no.
- 53:50Speaker 1: No, no, no this time. But I gotta tell you
- 53:52Speaker 1: Ethan Hawk deserves one Best Actor nomination. I hope he
- 53:55Speaker 1: gets to this ship for Blue Moon. He's a brilliant actor.
- 53:58Speaker 1: And again, Jill, with her love of musical theater, you
- 54:00Speaker 1: mentioned Rodgers and Hammerstein. Her ears are gonna perk up.
- 54:02Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now, watch Blue Moon. It's a
- 54:04Speaker 1: great film.
- 54:05Speaker 2: Two things. Ethan Hawk, Yes, deserves his flowers too. What
- 54:09Speaker 2: does Bradley Cooper do to his face?
- 54:13Speaker 1: And it's one of those roles like I don't like
- 54:15Speaker 1: when directors then put themselves in the way, like Cooper
- 54:18Speaker 1: gives himself the role.
- 54:19Speaker 2: No, no, no, but let's let's just talk about his face.
- 54:21Speaker 1: But let me just finish my thought movie because I
- 54:23Speaker 1: don't like when directors give themselves a cameo role. So
- 54:25Speaker 1: in the movie he plays it the goofy guy smoking weed,
- 54:28Speaker 1: who's like, you know, trying to be goofy and stuff,
- 54:30Speaker 1: trying to get back. I'm like, like, just just direct
- 54:32Speaker 1: the movie.
- 54:33Speaker 2: In docums, just direct direct either, Yeah, just direct. So
- 54:36Speaker 2: you don't like when Quentin Tarantino does that.
- 54:38Speaker 1: No, I don't, It's unnecessary.
- 54:39Speaker 2: We never had that. We never had that conversation about
- 54:42Speaker 2: Quentin Tarantino calling Paul Daniel ruining there will be blood.
- 54:46Speaker 1: Now he said versions of but never This means spirited
- 54:49Speaker 1: because I know how much he loves Dorbly blood, as
- 54:51Speaker 1: do I. And I have the DVD of Therby Blood
- 54:53Speaker 1: and in it he says he goes, this is one
- 54:54Speaker 1: of the great films last twenty years. And what he's
- 54:56Speaker 1: still in the DVD is he goes. My one quibble
- 54:58Speaker 1: with it is he goes, Dan Lewis is so incredible.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Paul Daniel gets overpowered because it's a little bit like
- 55:04Speaker 1: Alli Quarry. But in the interview you're referring to him
- 55:06Speaker 1: weeks ago. He goes, this guy's the worst actor in Hollywood,
- 55:09Speaker 1: Like he just killed the guy.
- 55:10Speaker 2: But I thought Paul Dano was fantastic in the movie.
- 55:12Speaker 1: I agree, sniveling nincompoopy, Like I mean the scene where
- 55:16Speaker 1: he embarrasses and insults playing you when he gets him
- 55:19Speaker 1: to keep.
- 55:19Speaker 3: It, I abaded my boy a time.
- 55:22Speaker 1: That's one of the best scenes because he's poking them,
- 55:24Speaker 1: he's getting them going. And at the end again when
- 55:27Speaker 1: when de Lucia's towers over him with I drink your
- 55:29Speaker 1: milkshake speech, I'm with you. You've got to have two
- 55:31Speaker 1: great actors going toe to toe. I disagree with Tarantino's
- 55:34Speaker 1: criticism and the fact he did it publicly.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and then back to Bradley Cooper's face. I know
- 55:39Speaker 2: we're jumping all over the place here, but what's he
- 55:42Speaker 2: doing one are the great looking humans and just decides
- 55:45Speaker 2: to do some face pull fucking Hollywood bullshit.
- 55:48Speaker 1: Well, one of my friends of you once he goes,
- 55:49Speaker 1: do you think he's good looking? Or is he good
- 55:51Speaker 1: looking just because he's rich?
- 55:52Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 55:52Speaker 1: He goes, if you look at his features? Like, no,
- 55:53Speaker 1: I think he's a good looking guy.
- 55:55Speaker 2: He goes a big nose.
- 55:56Speaker 1: I go, know, I think he's a good looking guy,
- 55:57Speaker 1: and I think he happens to be rich and famous
- 55:58Speaker 1: as well. But he's going a little too far now.
- 56:00Speaker 1: He's got the money's gone to his head. He's fifty
- 56:02Speaker 1: years old. I mean at this age, had fifty.
- 56:05Speaker 2: You don't got to touch your face, maybe seventy if
- 56:08Speaker 2: you want, and you got a vanity play. Just put
- 56:10Speaker 2: some beef talo on and relax. Enjoy the wrinkles. Enjoy
- 56:14Speaker 2: the wrinkles. It's part of life.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Humphrey Bogart years ago, was being touched up by the
- 56:19Speaker 1: makeup artist and he's like, what are you doing? She said,
- 56:20Speaker 1: I'm trying to get rid of you wrinkles. He pause, goes, no, hey,
- 56:23Speaker 1: I've earned those. Leave them.
- 56:24Speaker 2: That's part of the right.
- 56:25Speaker 1: That's how I play a weathered weathered man.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Of course, like doing this podcast is giving us a
- 56:29Speaker 2: couple of grades, but we wear them proudly. No, not
- 56:32Speaker 2: about no marketing. We wear them proudly.
- 56:34Speaker 1: We want to just quickly touch on the fact Hot
- 56:36Speaker 1: Mike hijinks. We saw the return of Flyers radio broadcast.
- 56:39Speaker 2: We're doing this Saunders. Yeah, two game TV three weeks later, Well.
- 56:43Speaker 1: I agree with you, but then tells get in there like, okay, fine,
- 56:46Speaker 1: it was a cringe moment, but Tim was joking around.
- 56:48Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, being at the Flyers game last week,
- 56:51Speaker 1: this is the best thing for his career.
- 56:53Speaker 3: JD.
- 56:53Speaker 1: I saw several T shirts saying free Tim Saunders. Nobody
- 56:57Speaker 1: know this guy was before. Now loves him because he
- 56:59Speaker 1: clearly has a great sense of humor. And he got
- 57:02Speaker 1: suspended for it. I'm sure the Flyers said, listen, we
- 57:04Speaker 1: don't want to suspend you. You're a great guy, you
- 57:05Speaker 1: do a great job, but we just have to do this.
- 57:07Speaker 1: It'll be beneficial to your career. No such thing as
- 57:10Speaker 1: bad publicity, which makes you think of other great Hot
- 57:12Speaker 1: Mike moments including Peyton Manning, Gilling, damn it at Donald
- 57:15Speaker 1: Brown and shot Deshaun Watson saying I masturbated it and
- 57:19Speaker 1: I'm ready to go.
- 57:21Speaker 2: There's uh, there's that one's I mean, that's that one's funny.
- 57:27Speaker 2: But knowing what Deshaun Watson's done on the table and
- 57:31Speaker 2: how he enjoys the old uh yeah, the old poking stroke,
- 57:35Speaker 2: I think he's just a big rubbin tug out. Well,
- 57:37Speaker 2: he enjoys the tug. No rub that's what he enjoys.
- 57:41Speaker 2: Tug hold the rub no. But I the there is
- 57:47Speaker 2: a great one with Kevin Weeks on the NHL Network
- 57:49Speaker 2: that they show me. It's actually so funny. It's like
- 57:52Speaker 2: I think it's on YouTube somewhere, but it's him. It's
- 57:56Speaker 2: just him talking to I think it's Jamie Hirsch or
- 58:00Speaker 2: Jamison Coyle and he's just they're live and he's sitting
- 58:02Speaker 2: there and he's like whip and he's like he's like,
- 58:05Speaker 2: oh they suck. And they're like and they're like, oh,
- 58:07Speaker 2: we're live. They're like we're live, and he's like, what
- 58:09Speaker 2: we're live. He's like, no, we're not, and like yeah.
- 58:11Speaker 2: He goes, okay, okay, we'll do it live. And then
- 58:13Speaker 2: he just turns out and he goes all right, everybody,
- 58:14Speaker 2: here we go. He just like dives into it, but
- 58:17Speaker 2: it was like ten seconds, like live on air, just
- 58:19Speaker 2: being like wooo, just like messing around and they're like,
- 58:22Speaker 2: we're live. He's like, ah, funny, kind of like Tim
- 58:24Speaker 2: Sunders did. The best part of the Tim Saunders thing
- 58:28Speaker 2: is when they go Tim, we're live and he goes, ah, yeah,
- 58:31Speaker 2: and then he goes, wait, we are that's the realization.
- 58:36Speaker 2: Oh fuck, so.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Good Tim Sonders.
- 58:39Speaker 3: It was great.
- 58:40Speaker 1: As far as our favorite moments of the year, I'm
- 58:42Speaker 1: gonna say listen, Canada winning the four Nations is absolutely unbelievable.
- 58:45Speaker 1: It was a great game, a great tournament.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Talent.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Your pick is go ahead, Alexandrovechkin record setting goal.
- 58:50Speaker 4: Yeah, my favorite moment of twenty twenty five was was Ovechkin.
- 58:54Speaker 4: The Ovechkin train, Ovechkin watch, whatever you want to call it.
- 58:57Speaker 4: Just the anticipation, the celebration, Like I don't think I've
- 59:00Speaker 4: ever seen a game stopped like that in the middle
- 59:02Speaker 4: of the game after someone scores goal. I mean, the
- 59:04Speaker 4: whole team came out, his family came out, they halted everything,
- 59:08Speaker 4: and I mean, I don't know how we're going to
- 59:11Speaker 4: verify this, but I don't think this record is getting
- 59:13Speaker 4: broken ever.
- 59:15Speaker 2: No, I don't think so. I said stupidly on the network,
- 59:19Speaker 2: it's not gonna get broken for a long long time,
- 59:21Speaker 2: and it was a captain obvious. I'm like, yes, I
- 59:24Speaker 2: know it's gonna be a long time. We've ever does
- 59:25Speaker 2: get broken, but I don't think it ever will be broken.
- 59:28Speaker 3: There you go, h but no.
- 59:30Speaker 2: I mean favorite moment has to be just the repeat
- 59:32Speaker 2: of the Florida Panthers. I think the way they did it,
- 59:35Speaker 2: you know, I just think was incredible. I was out
- 59:37Speaker 2: there live watching it, watching them win that I was
- 59:40Speaker 2: able to walk by the dressing room as they when
- 59:43Speaker 2: they won because we had to do some stuff on ice,
- 59:46Speaker 2: and I think i'd Adam Party, who was like a
- 59:48Speaker 2: scout there was like or works for the team, was like,
- 59:51Speaker 2: and I know him a little bit, It's like, hey,
- 59:52Speaker 2: come on in, and I was I had a second
- 59:54Speaker 2: and maybe jump in the room, smoked some cigars and
- 59:56Speaker 2: I was like, nah, I don't want to go in
- 59:57Speaker 2: with the guys. It's their time. But yeah, just it
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: was amazing to see that a repeat the three years
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: in the Cup final and you know, being in South
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Florida and seeing where they are. I think that's what
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: was my favorite moment so far of twenty twenty five.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: And then I mean, Macklin Celebrini's gotta be the other one,
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: the short one. Macln Celebrini, what he's doing for the
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: Sharks team right now, can't wait to see it into
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: twenty twenty six. Happy New Year. Go fuck yourself.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: So no, I'm gonna say, make that your prediction. Cele
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Briny wins the Heart Trophy.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: How about that? Yeah?
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: I think so if San Jose Sharks make the playoffs,
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: he wins the Heart Trophy. So me saying he wins
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: our trophy is saying the Santaose Sharks will make the playoffs.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: Tell your prediction for twenty twenty six.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: I'm going back to Ovi. I'm saying he comes back.
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: He will sign either a one or two year deal
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: this summer. I don't think you know, we've been speculating
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: he might go for a thousand goals.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: I don't think it's about that.
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: I think this team has enough talent to win another Cup,
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: and I think he wants to be there win or
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: if it happens, so he'll be back.
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: I mean that's definitely a bold prediction. You go, maybe
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: come back. Fiction is Rick Tackett wins to Jack Adams
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Coach of the Year. Philadelphia Flyers are gonna right. Talk
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: was unbelievable.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: The kids.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: Scarborough guy, he's doing an amazing job of the Flyers.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Rick Talcket, Jack Adams.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: He's got He's got everybody fooled you included everybody. He
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: ain't winning the Jack I mean the Jack Adams.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: Was gonna win the playoffs the first time in five
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: years and Talkeets lead them there.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: No, I would There's there's some other teams that could.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: John Cooper's never wanted Jack Adams. I'm telling you. Patrick
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: roy Pa No, Patrick.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Patty tells, Wow, uh No, it's gonna be Bedner.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: No, they'll say he's got all the tout in the world.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: They'll like it.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: They never give it to the best. Phil Jackson doesn't
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: win it. They give it to the guy who like Oh,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: they were expecting.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: Much, John Hines.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: What about John Hines's Rick talking before its John No,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: Joe Quinnville return. That's what they did. They like it
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: when they got the team wasn't good, then they made
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: the play So Doc smort good MCLA Flyers not good
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: make the playoffs. Quen vl versus talking. Thanks so much
