- 0:00Speaker 1: Marshall Falk what's going to rattle for Marshall Funker.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you, appreciate that.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Absolutely legend and you just flew in just now. Yeah.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I got in yeah, earlier today, earlier today.
- 0:12Speaker 3: I grew up in our south. I don't know if
- 0:14Speaker 3: you're familiar with Festus or Farmington, Missouri.
- 0:17Speaker 4: Yeah, but you're a legend, bro.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:20Speaker 4: You are a legend.
- 0:21Speaker 3: And it was it's a it's a pleasure to have
- 0:24Speaker 3: you on our podcast right on man. Uh you right
- 0:27Speaker 3: before the show we were talking and you saw the
- 0:29Speaker 3: Nebraska shot out the Big Red. But you mentioned that
- 0:32Speaker 3: Osbourne coach Osbourne was the first coach that said you
- 0:36Speaker 3: couldn't play running.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Back coach, first coach and he was he was honest,
- 0:39Speaker 2: Like first day I was there, you sit in with
- 0:42Speaker 2: him and and this before you go to your position meeting,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and and he asked, he you know what, so so
- 0:48Speaker 2: what do you what position you think you can play
- 0:50Speaker 2: here on Nebraska and you know, like this this the
- 0:52Speaker 2: early nineties, Nebraka Roland. Yeah. And the only reason I
- 0:57Speaker 2: took I took a visit because Mickey Joseph, who's from
- 1:01Speaker 2: New Orleans as well, had just became the quarterback there
- 1:05Speaker 2: and I was and I thought, because I'm I'm right
- 1:07Speaker 2: in between Mickey and Vance advanced. Joseph is Mickey Joseph's
- 1:11Speaker 2: younger brother, so I'm in between them two. And I
- 1:14Speaker 2: was like, man, if I go, I get a year
- 1:16Speaker 2: to play with Mickey and then I'll play with Vans
- 1:18Speaker 2: because I thought Advance was coming there. But Vans ended
- 1:20Speaker 2: up ended up going to Colorado.
- 1:22Speaker 4: So did did Nebraska offer?
- 1:24Speaker 2: They did?
- 1:24Speaker 4: They did?
- 1:25Speaker 2: But I had to play corner?
- 1:27Speaker 4: Really yeah, I mean you were like, I mean you
- 1:29Speaker 4: were an athlete.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Listen man. Coach coach Osborne is a legend.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:34Speaker 2: They when he was at Nebraska, they turned out so
- 1:36Speaker 2: many athletes, so many first rounders, So I mean he
- 1:40Speaker 2: knew what he was talking about. I was pretty good corner,
- 1:42Speaker 2: but I had to love I had to love for
- 1:44Speaker 2: playing running back. So it's a little different.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Was all your offers kind of split? Like your teams
- 1:48Speaker 3: wanting you to play corner? Teams wanted to play running back.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Most of them wanted me to play corner.
- 1:54Speaker 4: So that's is that a probably the biggest reason?
- 1:56Speaker 2: Well, no, no, no, because on offense, they were lazy
- 2:00Speaker 2: and I'm gonna tell you what happened after all. Right,
- 2:02Speaker 2: So I played quarterback, receiver, running back, but on offense,
- 2:05Speaker 2: I was just a corner cover corner, so they couldn't
- 2:09Speaker 2: tell what I played on offense. And right after that
- 2:11Speaker 2: happened about I'm gonna say right around maybe ninety four
- 2:16Speaker 2: ninety five, they created the position called athlete. So when
- 2:21Speaker 2: you recruit a guy, you recruited him as you just
- 2:23Speaker 2: get an athlete, because they realized, damn, if we'd have
- 2:26Speaker 2: got him in here, found out he could play multiple positions.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But back then they had the recruited position. You had
- 2:33Speaker 2: to play a position. You couldn't just be an athlete.
- 2:36Speaker 1: If Tom Osborne would have came in and been like, listen,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you're a hell of an athlete. We see you can
- 2:40Speaker 1: play all over the place, utilize you in ways no
- 2:43Speaker 1: one's ever seen before you go in to Nebraska.
- 2:46Speaker 2: It would have been easy. I mean it would have
- 2:48Speaker 2: been an easy decision. I mean, Nebraska was like cream
- 2:51Speaker 2: of the crop early nineties. I mean eighty eight, eighty nine,
- 2:56Speaker 2: ninety they were dominating fools.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Man.
- 3:01Speaker 3: That's gotta feel good to hear, dude, It does feel
- 3:03Speaker 3: good to hear. It sucks that we didn't, you know
- 3:04Speaker 3: what I mean, like Osbourne it happened.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Quarner back, Yeah, it happens.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Was the University of Michigan. I have to ask Michigan
- 3:09Speaker 1: off for you.
- 3:10Speaker 3: No, who's in your top who's in your top of?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Was Michigan wasn't recruiting and you know they weren't recruiting
- 3:16Speaker 2: in the South like that, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, note your dame.
- 3:20Speaker 2: They had that idea of they wanted people who played
- 3:22Speaker 2: in cold weather. That's that's the kind of They didn't
- 3:25Speaker 2: understand the difference in speed in the South versus the North.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Who's your top three? And why did you choose San
- 3:30Speaker 4: Diego State?
- 3:32Speaker 2: San Diego State wasn't even in the runnings it was
- 3:35Speaker 2: it was Nebraska, Miami and Texas, A and.
- 3:39Speaker 4: M So why San Diego State.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I took a trip out there. I was like, I
- 3:45Speaker 2: want to live here. This is nice.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Man.
- 3:47Speaker 2: At the plain Land. You take the one sixty three
- 3:50Speaker 2: down you're you're riding. I'm like, I've never seen anything
- 3:53Speaker 2: this beautiful, and the only thing I could think of. Yes,
- 3:57Speaker 2: I get to spend maybe four or five years out
- 3:59Speaker 2: of school, but I could live here. The rest of
- 4:01Speaker 2: my life. And so I live in San Diego.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Diegoya, Laoya. So when I was training, I would be
- 4:09Speaker 1: in a Lucadia Carlsbad in Sita's area, dude, and it
- 4:12Speaker 1: was we'd stay like on the bluff, hang out, like
- 4:14Speaker 1: just a way of living out there. Like, so California
- 4:17Speaker 1: really just can't beat.
- 4:18Speaker 4: It, dude.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I fell in love with it my trip out there,
- 4:20Speaker 2: I just I fell in love with I fell in
- 4:22Speaker 2: love with the city. The school is so open, and
- 4:25Speaker 2: it's just like and and then it was like a
- 4:27Speaker 2: melting pot, Like I mean, and I was I had
- 4:31Speaker 2: never been around any Asians, any no Mexicans. I was like,
- 4:36Speaker 2: there's there's everything at this school. Like the diversity was unbelievable.
- 4:41Speaker 3: What was the process like going into the draft because
- 4:44Speaker 3: you were number two overall? Right, number two, number two overall?
- 4:47Speaker 3: Talk about that because obviously like running back, now you
- 4:50Speaker 3: got somebody in the top ten, it's like, oh, that's
- 4:53Speaker 3: a big leap. Like back when you were running back,
- 4:55Speaker 3: like the running back was the premier spot that you
- 4:57Speaker 3: drafted at.
- 4:58Speaker 4: You signed guys like you built the round the running back.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Guess what we didn't do in college? The running backs
- 5:04Speaker 2: that got drafted early that you see going one, two, three.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Guess what we didn't do in college. We didn't share
- 5:10Speaker 2: the backfield. You watch college nown you got three and
- 5:12Speaker 2: four guys playing, I'm like, who's the guy? You can't
- 5:16Speaker 2: tell who the guy is. Yeah, And so if you
- 5:19Speaker 2: don't step up and demand, look, hey, I want to
- 5:22Speaker 2: carry the ball twenty twenty five times a game, and
- 5:25Speaker 2: then you're not going to get it. The position and
- 5:28Speaker 2: I'm saying it, the position has been devalued by the
- 5:31Speaker 2: guys who want to share time. Even in the pros,
- 5:34Speaker 2: these guys come out. Man, I never wanted to come
- 5:36Speaker 2: out of the game. I didn't want somebody taking my spot, right,
- 5:39Speaker 2: and now it's like to run two carries like they'
- 5:44Speaker 2: less somebody else in.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Right, It's got to make you appreciate a guy like
- 5:47Speaker 1: Derek Henry.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Then, yeah, well, Derek Henry, Christian McCaffrey, Kristen don't come
- 5:53Speaker 2: in for me, right.
- 5:54Speaker 4: I saw I actually read recently.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I think there's just an article on it about CMC
- 5:59Speaker 3: talking about how he's connected with you in the off
- 6:01Speaker 3: seasons or you giving him advice feedback. I think it
- 6:05Speaker 3: was like you and Ladanian Tomlinson taking care of your body,
- 6:07Speaker 3: just kind of being like Christians, kind of like that
- 6:10Speaker 3: that style that you were.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Where you're you can do everything.
- 6:12Speaker 3: You can catch out of the backfield, you can line
- 6:14Speaker 3: up at receiver, you can run the ball, talk about
- 6:17Speaker 3: talk about meeting him and and how you've been uh
- 6:21Speaker 3: kind of I guess a mentor uh during his career.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I mean, I wish I could say I was a mentor.
- 6:26Speaker 2: The kid is such astute and obviously we know his
- 6:30Speaker 2: father is is the pedigreed is there. But what I
- 6:33Speaker 2: love is in today's game, very few guys reach out.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I got it, I know. And the fact that you
- 6:40Speaker 2: know he'll call and he'll ask certain things and he's
- 6:43Speaker 2: not asking for pointers on how to hit the hole,
- 6:45Speaker 2: and he's like, how do I longevity? You played thirteen years?
- 6:49Speaker 2: How do I do this? How do I add? What
- 6:51Speaker 2: did you change about your workouts when you got to
- 6:52Speaker 2: this age? What did you you know? The things that
- 6:55Speaker 2: you want to know to like next level, which is
- 6:58Speaker 2: how to maintain your body, how to take care of yourself.
- 7:01Speaker 2: And and that's that's what he's doing. It's it's not
- 7:03Speaker 2: about what happens on the field, is about what happens
- 7:05Speaker 2: off the field, and he's smart enough to understand the
- 7:09Speaker 2: game is gonna be played. You just got to be
- 7:10Speaker 2: out there to be to play it. The best, the best,
- 7:15Speaker 2: the best, the best. When you have talent and you
- 7:18Speaker 2: see it, the best ability is your availability.
- 7:22Speaker 1: That's yeah. With going back to San Diego, San Diego State,
- 7:25Speaker 1: when you're having all these big offers and you just
- 7:27Speaker 1: go to a place in the location to you is like, oh,
- 7:30Speaker 1: this is where I want to be, Like, was there
- 7:32Speaker 1: any family members? I was like, listen, you have an
- 7:34Speaker 1: opportunity to go to the NFL. Here, are you sure
- 7:35Speaker 1: you want to go to stand can.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Go to Miami, but to Miami in the nineties.
- 7:39Speaker 2: But listen, and I'm gonna be like, I'll be honest
- 7:42Speaker 2: with you. Guys. On my high school football team in
- 7:44Speaker 2: four years, I probably won like six games. Like we
- 7:48Speaker 2: were we sucked, like you couldn't tell, but everybody we
- 7:51Speaker 2: played like you could, like I scored on when we
- 7:55Speaker 2: played against the really good teams, Like I wasn't on
- 7:58Speaker 2: a good team. So it wasn't like you saw in me,
- 8:01Speaker 2: oh he could go to the NFL. It was like
- 8:04Speaker 2: you people didn't know they didn't see it. So when
- 8:08Speaker 2: I got to San Diego State and all right, now
- 8:11Speaker 2: I'm not playing running back, receiver, quarterback, dB, kicker, punter,
- 8:17Speaker 2: return kicks, punts. Like when I walked on the feeling
- 8:20Speaker 2: in high school, I didn't come off till halftime.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I did everything And when the when the kicker was okay,
- 8:29Speaker 2: I held for him. So I did everything. So they
- 8:33Speaker 2: didn't really get a chance to see. So I get
- 8:35Speaker 2: to see Diego State now it's just like that's all
- 8:39Speaker 2: I do is play running back. Oh my god, this
- 8:41Speaker 2: is easy.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Are you kidding me?
- 8:44Speaker 2: I get I get the rest while the defenses out there.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Oh man, I'm way easier.
- 8:49Speaker 4: It was.
- 8:50Speaker 2: It was like night and day.
- 8:51Speaker 1: So if you didn't know in high school, like for
- 8:53Speaker 1: for me, I I tell a story that I got
- 8:55Speaker 1: offered by Utah State going into my senior year and
- 8:58Speaker 1: that was like, Okay, I'm gonna go NFL. And when
- 9:00Speaker 1: we were for you where you're like, okay, I'm for
- 9:02Speaker 1: sure maybe not going to have the success that you've
- 9:04Speaker 1: eventually had, but like what did you know?
- 9:06Speaker 2: Like I'm gonna be an NFL football player second my
- 9:08Speaker 2: second game in college, literally first game didn't go well.
- 9:11Speaker 2: First game. First game, I didn't I didn't play much.
- 9:15Speaker 2: And I got in it was like we we we
- 9:18Speaker 2: played I think it was like Long Beach State. And
- 9:20Speaker 2: I got in and I had a couple of good
- 9:23Speaker 2: runs and then I, you know, tried to tried to
- 9:25Speaker 2: do a little too much and did a spin move
- 9:28Speaker 2: in the ball flew in the air. I was like,
- 9:31Speaker 2: oh my god. And then the next the next game,
- 9:36Speaker 2: I don't play. The first quarter. First play, first play
- 9:41Speaker 2: of the second quarter, our starting running back was the
- 9:46Speaker 2: punt returner. He gets hit in the thigh and he's
- 9:48Speaker 2: out and coach grabs my face mask. The only thing
- 9:52Speaker 2: he says is hold on to the ball, and so
- 9:56Speaker 2: so from right right hold on to the ball. So
- 9:59Speaker 2: I am end up playing the rest of the second quarter,
- 10:03Speaker 2: the third quarter, and half of the fourth. In that time,
- 10:07Speaker 2: I'd rushed for three hundred and eighty nine yards and
- 10:10Speaker 2: seven touchdowns.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Who were all playing.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Literally, people get mad at me because they because because
- 10:18Speaker 2: after that, like I think after that year, they shut
- 10:21Speaker 2: down the football program. It was the University of Pacific.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Literally literally that's what they say.
- 10:29Speaker 1: You the programs anymore? That is nuts me.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Yeah, what was it like going from uh, where'd you
- 10:36Speaker 3: grow up exactly? New Orleans, New Orleans, to San Diego
- 10:39Speaker 3: and then to Indianapolis.
- 10:41Speaker 2: All culture shocks, all culture shocks. Like I'm talking night
- 10:45Speaker 2: and day. Man, what was I remember before we get
- 10:48Speaker 2: to that. I remember going to the going to the combine.
- 10:52Speaker 2: So I leave, I leave San Diego, I go to
- 10:54Speaker 2: fight Indianapolis for the combine. It's cold like it's it's
- 10:59Speaker 2: like this time of the year Indy and it did
- 11:01Speaker 2: just had like one of the worst blizzards and I
- 11:04Speaker 2: never been in snow. I'm like, oh my god, it sucks.
- 11:07Speaker 2: This is awful. I would never live here. With the
- 11:11Speaker 2: second pick in the Napolis coach take bunch of fuck
- 11:15Speaker 2: I'm like, oh my god.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Yeah, take us to your thought process probably pumped checking
- 11:19Speaker 3: around or second overall, but that same time, you're like, damn,
- 11:22Speaker 3: I gotta go to Indianapolis.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Man.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I was just like, That's all I was thinking about
- 11:25Speaker 2: was the wintertime. I was just like, man, it's how
- 11:27Speaker 2: cold it was when I was there, so I kept
- 11:30Speaker 2: I was happy that we played indoors, but at that
- 11:33Speaker 2: point in time, they didn't have an indoor practice facility.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Oh yeah, my first year my first year, we didn't
- 11:40Speaker 2: have an indoor practice facility, so it was it wasn't
- 11:43Speaker 2: It wasn't as bad as I thought. It's it's so
- 11:45Speaker 2: different when you, like in college, how you see things
- 11:51Speaker 2: too in the pros, Like you grow up real fast
- 11:54Speaker 2: when you like you're a rookie. Halfway through the season,
- 11:56Speaker 2: it starts to get starts to get cold, and you're
- 11:58Speaker 2: you're in the locker room and you're in a huddle
- 12:00Speaker 2: and he's grown men. He's like grown ass men. They're like, like,
- 12:05Speaker 2: my job's on the line, hold on to the ball.
- 12:08Speaker 2: You're like, man, this like this guy gotta feed his kids.
- 12:13Speaker 2: They got like, like the game for some people, it's
- 12:16Speaker 2: not really a game. It's like it's their livelihood and
- 12:19Speaker 2: they take it serious. And that was that. That's like
- 12:22Speaker 2: a that's like a whole nother transition, seeing the game
- 12:24Speaker 2: for what it is, but make it, but trying to
- 12:27Speaker 2: make sure that it's still fun for you because the
- 12:29Speaker 2: funk can go out of it real quick.
- 12:30Speaker 1: That's got to be like the hardest thing though, is
- 12:33Speaker 1: realizing how much of a business it is, especially like
- 12:35Speaker 1: high school, like all your boys, like you win in
- 12:38Speaker 1: six games, your entiret but every single Friday, the boys
- 12:40Speaker 1: are hyped up. Ye after how it was for you boys,
- 12:42Speaker 1: But hey, it's like, how we're going to find a
- 12:44Speaker 1: toll pack of beer after this? You know, chase a
- 12:46Speaker 1: couple of girls around.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Like the same thing.
- 12:47Speaker 1: But you're all kind of like doing doing your thing.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Then you go to college and it's like a little
- 12:50Speaker 1: more obviously more serious, but like no one's got no
- 12:53Speaker 1: one's married, no one has families. Like you're still like
- 12:55Speaker 1: all as a community going and doing the same thing.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Across San Diego. You're all chasing the yeah, and you're
- 13:00Speaker 1: all chasing the NFL, and you get the NFL. It's
- 13:02Speaker 1: like now you're twenty one years old and there's thirty
- 13:05Speaker 1: two year old dudes, three kids growing. Then they go,
- 13:09Speaker 1: they do their business and they leave. You're like, yo,
- 13:10Speaker 1: you want to you want to hang out? They're like, no, dog,
- 13:13Speaker 1: what are you talking about. I'm gonna go see my family.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Like how difficult was that for you to kind of
- 13:17Speaker 1: like realize and keep the fun when it was so business?
- 13:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you obviously like you've got to have the right
- 13:24Speaker 2: support system around you because a lot of the dudes
- 13:28Speaker 2: in the locker room they're not when it's over, you're
- 13:32Speaker 2: not going to play Madden, Like you're not going to
- 13:35Speaker 2: hang out. Yeah, and your priorities start to change and
- 13:39Speaker 2: you start to understand how much of a business it
- 13:42Speaker 2: is and you have to start. Yeah, the game is
- 13:44Speaker 2: fun and you're getting paid a lot of money and
- 13:46Speaker 2: it's a business and they expect you to do your job.
- 13:49Speaker 2: If you don't, if you don't do the things you're
- 13:52Speaker 2: supposed to do, the fund can go out of it
- 13:54Speaker 2: really quick.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Yeah, really quick.
- 13:56Speaker 3: How do you feel like your professionalism in like know,
- 14:00Speaker 3: acclimating yourself to the league as a running back developed
- 14:03Speaker 3: over time, especially as a younger guy like you were
- 14:05Speaker 3: alluding to, you know, talking with Christian about like maintaining
- 14:08Speaker 3: your body and everything like that, Like how did you
- 14:10Speaker 3: develop as a pro in the early part of your career?
- 14:13Speaker 2: That what I told him and the things that I
- 14:16Speaker 2: say to him, im it. Spiant told it to me,
- 14:18Speaker 2: Thurman Thomas told it to me, Ronnie Harmon. Like these
- 14:22Speaker 2: old heads they if you ask the veterans will tell
- 14:25Speaker 2: you what to do. Like they'll give you the information
- 14:28Speaker 2: on how to have a long a long career and
- 14:30Speaker 2: how to last and and and how how to community
- 14:33Speaker 2: continue to be productive in your latter years. I mean,
- 14:37Speaker 2: it wasn't a hard thing. Actually what what what is
- 14:40Speaker 2: hard is early in your career making sure that you
- 14:44Speaker 2: do an off season, you remain in shape, you don't
- 14:46Speaker 2: go party with your boys. Later in your career, making
- 14:49Speaker 2: sure that you value you value the time that you
- 14:52Speaker 2: get to train and and don't oh, I got to
- 14:54Speaker 2: take my kids here, I got to go here with
- 14:56Speaker 2: the wife. The time that we get, those thirteen years
- 14:59Speaker 2: that I play, it's like a blip in my life,
- 15:01Speaker 2: Like it was such a fun time. But when I
- 15:05Speaker 2: look back at it, I was like, man, that seemed
- 15:07Speaker 2: like so long, but it was, it went so fast.
- 15:10Speaker 2: So cherishing in the moments that you have and the
- 15:13Speaker 2: responsibilities to making sure that that you are the best
- 15:17Speaker 2: that you can be. It's a it's a responsibility that
- 15:20Speaker 2: you you got to take on because when I'm in
- 15:22Speaker 2: the huddle, you know what I want you to know
- 15:23Speaker 2: when you're looking at me, that you can come at me.
- 15:26Speaker 2: I want you to know that I did the things
- 15:27Speaker 2: that I was supposed to do in the off season
- 15:29Speaker 2: to be here, and I got you, and I need
- 15:31Speaker 2: to know you did the same thing.
- 15:33Speaker 1: How was it difficult for you to ask for that
- 15:35Speaker 1: guidance and help from those older guys.
- 15:36Speaker 2: No, uh huh, No, I'm so. I'm the youngest. I got,
- 15:39Speaker 2: I got, I got five older brothers. I'm the youngest
- 15:42Speaker 2: of six. And I learned, you know, I learned by
- 15:46Speaker 2: watching them and asking them. And I didn't have to repeat.
- 15:49Speaker 2: They paid the dummy tax. I didn't have to pay it.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:53Speaker 3: No, it's fair of being the youngest. You kind of
- 15:55Speaker 3: have to go by it like the humble way, because
- 15:57Speaker 3: if not the older, your older brothers will humble you.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Yeah, we're both, we're both the oldest.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Go.
- 16:02Speaker 4: No, did you have one?
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yeah? I was gonna say, was there ever like somebody
- 16:07Speaker 1: you reached out to for help? That was like you
- 16:09Speaker 1: got to figure out for yourself?
- 16:11Speaker 2: Nah, because I was selected. I was always selective. What
- 16:13Speaker 2: I did was I made sure that I formed some
- 16:17Speaker 2: type of relationship with the person before I engaged and
- 16:21Speaker 2: asked for help. And I think that's what you do.
- 16:25Speaker 2: You just call somebody up and say hey. You don't
- 16:28Speaker 2: ask them about their life. You don't find out about
- 16:30Speaker 2: anything that motivates them, you know, you don't find out
- 16:33Speaker 2: if y'all have any commonalities you just ask them. I mean,
- 16:36Speaker 2: that's kind of cheesy. Call somebody. You get to know them,
- 16:39Speaker 2: and that's what christ and they say, Hey, man, I'm
- 16:40Speaker 2: a big fan, huge fan of yours. Always loved your game,
- 16:43Speaker 2: Like like we had a conversation about where I was
- 16:46Speaker 2: at in life and what I was doing and how
- 16:48Speaker 2: things are going before we got into anything about ball.
- 16:52Speaker 2: And I think there's just a respectful way to go
- 16:53Speaker 2: about it.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Who is that rival running back that you always just
- 16:57Speaker 4: kept your eye on that you.
- 16:58Speaker 2: All of us, all of them, every every back that
- 16:59Speaker 2: I took. I didn't care where you were drafted, how
- 17:02Speaker 2: good you were. I wanted to be the best running
- 17:04Speaker 2: back on the field. Actually, I wanted to be the
- 17:06Speaker 2: best football player on the field period. That's what I
- 17:08Speaker 2: always thought about. I never looked at it as as
- 17:11Speaker 2: a position, like I always looked at myself as a
- 17:13Speaker 2: football player like I was never I wasn't a running
- 17:16Speaker 2: back or receiver or slot like. I didn't want labels.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I was like, I can play the game of I'm
- 17:21Speaker 2: a football player.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Right, I was, I gonna ask it was so tasting
- 17:28Speaker 3: the business for the first time, Like you get traded
- 17:30Speaker 3: to Saint Louis before you get traded.
- 17:33Speaker 4: You have some turf toe that you're battling. A couple
- 17:35Speaker 4: of years.
- 17:35Speaker 2: You did your homework.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Hey listen, man, Marshall Fulk.
- 17:41Speaker 3: You're on the man cover, you know, seeing the jerseys
- 17:43Speaker 3: transition of navy blue and gold, like you're Marshall Fulk.
- 17:46Speaker 4: So yes, I know a little bit about you.
- 17:49Speaker 3: But tasting the business for the first time, like walk
- 17:52Speaker 3: us through that like cause you know you're you're drafted
- 17:54Speaker 3: second overall, like you're the man, and then all of
- 17:57Speaker 3: a sudden you get traded for a couple of picks
- 17:59Speaker 3: to Saint Louis. Like talk up at that relationship and
- 18:01Speaker 3: kind of seeing the business for what it is.
- 18:02Speaker 2: With Indianapolis, yeah, I was ready for change, and I
- 18:07Speaker 2: think Indianapolis they were as long as because my last
- 18:10Speaker 2: year there in ninety eight, I almost did a thousand thousand.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Like I was like, we sucked, but I had an
- 18:15Speaker 2: amazing year. I almost did a thousand thousand. Yeah, you know,
- 18:20Speaker 2: and we only won like three or four games. So
- 18:22Speaker 2: I was putting in work. But what they realized was
- 18:24Speaker 2: that people were still following me. I was the leader,
- 18:28Speaker 2: and they wanted it to be Peyton's team. So moving
- 18:33Speaker 2: me kind of took a security blanket away from Peyton,
- 18:37Speaker 2: which which actually allowed him to grow up because the
- 18:39Speaker 2: next year they went thirteen and three and he took
- 18:41Speaker 2: charge of the team. How that was kind of his
- 18:44Speaker 2: leadership way. But for me that happened but in the move,
- 18:49Speaker 2: accepting the fact that it was time to go, and
- 18:54Speaker 2: it's kind of like like I kind of needed it
- 18:56Speaker 2: in a sense because when you walk into a new
- 18:58Speaker 2: locker room and here's eyes and it's like you got traded,
- 19:01Speaker 2: you got this big contract. They looking at you, You
- 19:04Speaker 2: looking at them, and it's like it's like, who the
- 19:06Speaker 2: hell is this guy? Who does he think he is?
- 19:09Speaker 2: And and I and you walk. You go from a
- 19:11Speaker 2: locker room to where you're proven to a locker room
- 19:14Speaker 2: where you have to prove yourself and it puts you back,
- 19:17Speaker 2: like it gives you that edge back. I got that
- 19:19Speaker 2: edge back, and I was like, Okay, I like this,
- 19:21Speaker 2: I gotta show I gotta earn their respect before before
- 19:24Speaker 2: they believe I can lead them. And if if you
- 19:28Speaker 2: accept it like that, then the business is easy to
- 19:30Speaker 2: deal with.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Gotcha, how long does it take you to earn that respect?
- 19:33Speaker 1: In your mind? I mean, it's extremely established. I'm sure
- 19:35Speaker 1: it didn't take very.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Long, but.
- 19:38Speaker 2: It actually took I'm gonna tell I'll be honest, it
- 19:41Speaker 2: took a few games. I'm gonna tell you. We so
- 19:45Speaker 2: we were, we were I think we were six and
- 19:48Speaker 2: oh and I barely touched the ball. And I had
- 19:52Speaker 2: not one games in the NFL without touching the ball
- 19:56Speaker 2: that much. Like I think the first game I touched
- 19:58Speaker 2: the ball twelve times, and next game like thirteen, maybe fifteen.
- 20:04Speaker 2: But we go we're I think we were six and
- 20:06Speaker 2: oh five and oh six and oh, and we're in Tennessee.
- 20:09Speaker 2: We're playing the Titans, and they're giving us the business.
- 20:13Speaker 2: You know, they're giving us the business. I'm just telling you.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Uh.
- 20:19Speaker 2: We go into the locker room. I go to Mike Marsa.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I said, Mike, I understand you being judicious. Just come
- 20:26Speaker 2: to me. And so we come out. We come out.
- 20:29Speaker 2: The first like five or six plays, the ball goes
- 20:32Speaker 2: to me. We score, and so I kind of took
- 20:34Speaker 2: over the game. We're down like twenty one, twenty one,
- 20:38Speaker 2: maybe three, and we ended up tying it up twenty
- 20:42Speaker 2: four to twenty four. And they got the ball, drove
- 20:45Speaker 2: down and kicked the field goal in overtime, but they
- 20:48Speaker 2: had not seen like I literally took over the game.
- 20:51Speaker 2: And that's when they were like, okay, like all right,
- 20:56Speaker 2: we now we see who this guy is. Right before that,
- 21:00Speaker 2: you know, I was just like I was coasting. I
- 21:02Speaker 2: hadn't really taken over a game or played up to
- 21:05Speaker 2: my potential because I was just a part of the
- 21:07Speaker 2: offense I was doing. You know, I'm five eight, ten
- 21:10Speaker 2: yards twenty score a touchdown here. It didn't we didn't
- 21:14Speaker 2: need to dominate. But like I was like Mike feed
- 21:19Speaker 2: the boy, like, yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Have you always been a guy that's like, hey, give
- 21:23Speaker 1: me the give me the ball or was that like
- 21:25Speaker 1: was that a new thing for you to do to
- 21:26Speaker 1: kind of.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Like that that was that was always my personality was
- 21:32Speaker 2: like if we're going to we're going to win. If
- 21:34Speaker 2: I have the ball, that's like if I'm getting the ball,
- 21:36Speaker 2: we are going to win. That's like that was always
- 21:38Speaker 2: by my personality.
- 21:40Speaker 1: That's like a standard textbook personality trait of a skill
- 21:43Speaker 1: position guy that you need probably so you need that
- 21:46Speaker 1: like aj Brown playing with him with the Titans, like
- 21:48Speaker 1: he was a guy that like he's not getting a
- 21:49Speaker 1: lot of catches, he's like do you all want to
- 21:51Speaker 1: win or not? Like you need to give me the football. Yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and a lot of guys who look at that as
- 21:54Speaker 1: like selfish guy, nothink about the team, but like you
- 21:57Speaker 1: want dudes to have that kind of confidence and that
- 21:59Speaker 1: kind of like that ed have that edge of being
- 22:01Speaker 1: like I can truly make a difference any point in
- 22:04Speaker 1: the game at any time.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Yeah. I went about it a little different because, I mean,
- 22:09Speaker 2: should I play with ice Bruce Tory Holp? So I
- 22:12Speaker 2: was always like, Mike, look, no problem. Like we started
- 22:15Speaker 2: the game, you throw it, no problem. But when it
- 22:17Speaker 2: get real, when it gets real, like hey hey, like
- 22:25Speaker 2: like when you know when I started looking at him.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Like hey yeah, like let's get going score a little
- 22:29Speaker 4: too close?
- 22:30Speaker 3: Yeah, what was it like playing with the Peyton just
- 22:35Speaker 3: coming into it?
- 22:35Speaker 2: Was fun? Man, it was fun. It was fun like
- 22:38Speaker 2: watching him learn the game because he had all the attributes.
- 22:43Speaker 2: But the speed of the game was just a little different,
- 22:45Speaker 2: like your first year for a quarterback. It's moving fast,
- 22:48Speaker 2: like faster than you ever thought. And he threw a
- 22:51Speaker 2: bunch of interceptions. And I mean I used to we
- 22:54Speaker 2: used to walk off and he used to. I just
- 22:55Speaker 2: didn't think the guy could get there. I didn't think
- 22:57Speaker 2: the guy could get there. And then one time I
- 22:59Speaker 2: was just like, hey, Peyton's the NFL. Everybody can get there. Yeah,
- 23:03Speaker 2: Like it's a little different, man. All these dudes, the dudes, man,
- 23:07Speaker 2: they were at some point in time, they were the
- 23:09Speaker 2: best person on a team, All of these dudes in
- 23:12Speaker 2: the league.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Like the dudes with obviously that rookie year throwing all
- 23:16Speaker 1: those interceptions, did you expect him to have the career
- 23:18Speaker 1: that he ended up happing?
- 23:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah, oh yeah, you can see it, you know
- 23:20Speaker 2: what I mean, because it was all like every mistake
- 23:24Speaker 2: was a new mistake, and he didn't make the same
- 23:26Speaker 2: mistake twice. Once he made that mistake, he fouled away,
- 23:29Speaker 2: never made the mistake again.
- 23:32Speaker 3: That Let's dive into the greatest show on turf. Talk
- 23:36Speaker 3: about that year. We have a Tennessee Titan, Nashville native.
- 23:42Speaker 4: You want to hug yard and a half.
- 23:44Speaker 2: You want to hug hey, Jack hugg.
- 23:48Speaker 4: It's okay, that newspaper shot reaching.
- 23:51Speaker 2: I'll give you a hug.
- 23:53Speaker 3: No talk about talk about that year man and the
- 23:56Speaker 3: rise of the Saint Louis Rams.
- 23:58Speaker 2: It was literally I remember being in that locker room,
- 24:02Speaker 2: you know, from the start of the season, and I
- 24:05Speaker 2: think it was like I think it was Keith Lole Todd,
- 24:08Speaker 2: like they say why not us? Like why not us?
- 24:11Speaker 2: Literally like why not us?
- 24:13Speaker 4: Why?
- 24:13Speaker 2: Why why can't we dominate the league? And everybody was
- 24:16Speaker 2: like huh. And like that literally started. You could see
- 24:24Speaker 2: guys because the Rams had a lot of good draft picks,
- 24:29Speaker 2: but they just couldn't put the pieces together. And it
- 24:32Speaker 2: was all because they had drapped with Orlando Pace, gwyn Renstrom,
- 24:37Speaker 2: Isaac Bruce toddl like like all of these dudes are
- 24:40Speaker 2: first rounders. Like they had guys that was still on
- 24:42Speaker 2: the team that that that could play, and you know,
- 24:48Speaker 2: it just it just hadn't happened for them. But the
- 24:53Speaker 2: the willingness to just buy in and and and we
- 24:57Speaker 2: started this. We started this thing with celebrating as a team,
- 25:01Speaker 2: Like it started in practice. It didn't matter who caught
- 25:04Speaker 2: the touchdown, we were gonna celebrate as a team. It
- 25:06Speaker 2: didn't matter who got the sack, they were gonna we
- 25:08Speaker 2: were gonna celebrate as a team. And and that started
- 25:11Speaker 2: to feed into the identity. And then we had this
- 25:14Speaker 2: special teams coach that was like he was the best
- 25:18Speaker 2: I had ever heard get people ready to play. I mean,
- 25:22Speaker 2: and he used to use a lot of war analogies
- 25:25Speaker 2: and and and and ask guys to go and and
- 25:29Speaker 2: and tell him what to do. And it used to
- 25:32Speaker 2: get people so fired up. I mean, I didn't even
- 25:34Speaker 2: play Special teams. I sat in the Special teams meetings
- 25:37Speaker 2: just to hear him talk shit. And and he man,
- 25:42Speaker 2: Frank Ganz was like he was. He was one of
- 25:44Speaker 2: the best special teams coaches to ever played. And in
- 25:47Speaker 2: that mantra of us, everybody was like, we gotta go
- 25:53Speaker 2: to work if we want to do this, and that
- 25:54Speaker 2: became our whole thing. Gotta go to work, Gotta go
- 25:57Speaker 2: to work, Gotta go to work, Gotta go to work.
- 26:00Speaker 1: When you guys, so you guys are feeling the juice yourself? Yeah,
- 26:03Speaker 1: team and everything like when did that? Like, all right,
- 26:06Speaker 1: the momentum is in our favor right now. When did
- 26:09Speaker 1: it turn into old legit? We can win a Super
- 26:11Speaker 1: Bowl this year?
- 26:16Speaker 2: After after we lost to Tennessee, the next week of practice,
- 26:24Speaker 2: how we showed up. I had been a part of
- 26:29Speaker 2: teams that lost games and showed up like it was nothing.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Guys showed up, hissed mad like working hard. You could
- 26:39Speaker 2: see that the linemen like O line, D line, they
- 26:41Speaker 2: were in fights with each other. It wasn't the it
- 26:44Speaker 2: wasn't the I'm I'm I'm doing defensive scout team a
- 26:47Speaker 2: offensive scout team, and I'm just getting in your way.
- 26:50Speaker 2: It was like they were trying to kick each other's butt.
- 26:53Speaker 2: And and I was like, man, these dudes, these dudes
- 26:58Speaker 2: hungry man, and and you could you could start to
- 27:01Speaker 2: see it. And we I think right after that, we
- 27:04Speaker 2: played the Niners and the Rams hadn't beat the Niners
- 27:06Speaker 2: in like eleven times, and we blew them out, like
- 27:10Speaker 2: literally blew them out. And that's when it was like
- 27:14Speaker 2: there's something here. There's literally something here.
- 27:17Speaker 3: And having that pissed off team after losing the Titans,
- 27:21Speaker 3: how hungry were you guys to play him again in
- 27:22Speaker 3: the in the Super Bowl.
- 27:27Speaker 2: We couldn't have had a better opponent, literally, could not
- 27:29Speaker 2: have had a better opponent.
- 27:31Speaker 4: Came down the last place, could.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Not have had a better opponent.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Man.
- 27:33Speaker 2: It was like if you go back and watch the
- 27:36Speaker 2: game that we played them, uh in Tennessee, like that
- 27:39Speaker 2: game was hard, was just as hard fought as the
- 27:43Speaker 2: Super Bowl. And and to watch the effort of Eddie
- 27:49Speaker 2: George and the late Steve McNair, like the effort. Like
- 27:52Speaker 2: I watched the last drive. Steve McNair is leaving it
- 27:55Speaker 2: all out there. I'm talking dog tired and just finding
- 28:00Speaker 2: a way to stay up, fight guys off, complete passes
- 28:05Speaker 2: and you know.
- 28:07Speaker 4: What was your vibe like on the sideline seeing him
- 28:09Speaker 4: drive down.
- 28:11Speaker 2: I'm gonna be honest, man, I was like, I was
- 28:13Speaker 2: so calm because I just didn't think this is I
- 28:17Speaker 2: was like, I knew a little bit about Fisher. I
- 28:21Speaker 2: was like, there's no way he goes for two because
- 28:23Speaker 2: if they scored, they were tie. But there was no
- 28:28Speaker 2: way he was going for two.
- 28:29Speaker 1: You know, that route was ran wrong. That route at
- 28:33Speaker 1: that depth was just a little bit more.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah, but that that that's it though. The discipline
- 28:39Speaker 2: of the game is sometimes what cause what all the
- 28:42Speaker 2: times is when you while you win or lose the
- 28:45Speaker 2: discipline and how you do stuff.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Mike Jones, Yeah, he's the one who had that final tackle.
- 28:51Speaker 3: You also play with I got to play with him.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Oh stay in the Super Bowl. Stand in the Super
- 28:54Speaker 1: Bowl because I was so tenty. I played for the
- 28:57Speaker 1: Titans twenty nineteen were two quarters away from going to
- 28:59Speaker 1: a super Tell me that feeling of running out of
- 29:03Speaker 1: the tunnel for a Super Bowl to literally achieve a
- 29:06Speaker 1: world championship, that that moment is it because you like
- 29:09Speaker 1: obviously extremely successful, like you've literally done everything you can
- 29:12Speaker 1: possibly do as a football player, but like the opportunity
- 29:15Speaker 1: to achieve like the holy grail of a team sport,
- 29:19Speaker 1: Like what is that? Was it moment massive? Or was it?
- 29:21Speaker 1: Like how hard was it to stay like kind of
- 29:24Speaker 1: composed just running out of the tunnel knowing win or
- 29:27Speaker 1: lose is the last game of the year and this
- 29:29Speaker 1: is a legacy deal.
- 29:30Speaker 2: I didn't even try to stay composed smart, Like what
- 29:34Speaker 2: I did was I allow whatever was going to happen
- 29:37Speaker 2: to happen, and that you know, I was going to
- 29:40Speaker 2: be able to gather myself and play the game. That's
- 29:43Speaker 2: literally when I ran out of that out of the tunnel,
- 29:46Speaker 2: I was so hyped, Like I started hyper ventilating. I
- 29:50Speaker 2: had to go to the sideline and get some oxygen.
- 29:51Speaker 2: I was like so excited because as a kid, like
- 29:56Speaker 2: my friends and I'm I'm I'm from New Orleans. We're
- 29:59Speaker 2: playing in Atlanta. I got so many people at the game,
- 30:01Speaker 2: like people that spent their last to get there because
- 30:04Speaker 2: they grew up, you know, everybody, And I'm thinking about
- 30:08Speaker 2: my boys when we you know, as kids. Every time,
- 30:11Speaker 2: it didn't matter what the score was. Oh ship, the
- 30:13Speaker 2: street light's coming on. We got to get home. This
- 30:15Speaker 2: play is to win the Super Bowl. I'm like, I
- 30:18Speaker 2: get a chance. Man, You're crazy, Like I was not
- 30:21Speaker 2: going to hold anything back. And you know, by the
- 30:24Speaker 2: time when I ran out, I'm I'm like, I'm amped,
- 30:28Speaker 2: and I time I wore myself out, I'm sitting on
- 30:31Speaker 2: the bench, I'm like, I gotta catch my breath.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Literally, I started the game off tired and it took
- 30:40Speaker 2: like I had to catch my second win just to
- 30:43Speaker 2: go out and play. That's that's how much adrenaline is
- 30:46Speaker 2: going through your body to play that game.
- 30:49Speaker 3: What a moment that would be. They're the MVP that
- 30:52Speaker 3: year too, right now, that was Kurt's that was Kurt.
- 30:55Speaker 3: You were second to Kurt, right, that's wild? Like Kurt
- 30:58Speaker 3: was the Kurt Warners number one.
- 31:00Speaker 2: So three years in a row two So Kurt one,
- 31:03Speaker 2: I was second. I won, he was second, Kurt one.
- 31:06Speaker 2: I was second three years in a row.
- 31:08Speaker 4: A guy who was filling grocery bags.
- 31:11Speaker 2: The best grocery bagger in the business.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Details bags were never on the bottom, Like he knew
- 31:17Speaker 1: what the hell he was doing.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Yeah, what was he like playing with him?
- 31:20Speaker 2: Hey? Best man? I know man, I tell people all
- 31:22Speaker 2: the time, like I'm talking not just football player, but
- 31:25Speaker 2: like person you meet him, like so authentic, so authentic, uh,
- 31:32Speaker 2: and just just enjoyed playing with him. He only got
- 31:38Speaker 2: upset with himself. It didn't matter who was yelling at him.
- 31:42Speaker 2: He he maintained who he was and he always stayed
- 31:46Speaker 2: in his person and who he wanted to be, like
- 31:48Speaker 2: a man of faith, always.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Not going back to back Spygate, Patriots taking it from
- 31:58Speaker 3: from us, from the Rams, from US seas Rams. You
- 32:01Speaker 3: were a Cowboys fan. I was a Cowboys fan. But
- 32:03Speaker 3: you're still like you know when the when the city
- 32:05Speaker 3: team wins. As a kid, you're on that bandwagon, you
- 32:09Speaker 3: know what I mean? Like Marshall Fulk was on the
- 32:11Speaker 3: cover of Madden. You pretended to be guys like Marshall Falk,
- 32:14Speaker 3: Trail Davis, Eddie Georgia out in the front yard. But
- 32:18Speaker 3: back to the question of not getting that back to
- 32:20Speaker 3: back Super Bowl against the Patriots.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Talk about that Yeah, that was a tough one.
- 32:26Speaker 4: Man.
- 32:27Speaker 2: You know, for for a while, I hung on that
- 32:30Speaker 2: loss more than I did the win, you know, and
- 32:33Speaker 2: and and you just you just you know, you gotta
- 32:38Speaker 2: let it go. You literally let it go. And and
- 32:41Speaker 2: that's that's easy to do when you play sports. You know,
- 32:44Speaker 2: you you don't you don't really know how to really
- 32:50Speaker 2: maintain what you need in order to enjoy the wins.
- 32:55Speaker 2: It's so much easier to go down and be pissed
- 32:56Speaker 2: off about the loss. That's so much easier, you know,
- 33:00Speaker 2: because it it becomes few to your fire. You know,
- 33:03Speaker 2: you use it to like get stuff done. You know. Really,
- 33:06Speaker 2: when you're the best, you're like, oh, I'm gonna work
- 33:08Speaker 2: out harder.
- 33:09Speaker 4: You know.
- 33:10Speaker 2: It's like it's harder to work out harder when you're
- 33:12Speaker 2: the best. It's easy to work out harder when when
- 33:15Speaker 2: there's some adversity or something's up against you. And so
- 33:19Speaker 2: you know, I had to I really had to like
- 33:22Speaker 2: work on like, man, I gotta let this go. Like
- 33:24Speaker 2: I enjoyed winning the super Bowl more than I did
- 33:28Speaker 2: losing the Super Bowl? Why am I not talking about
- 33:30Speaker 2: this as much?
- 33:31Speaker 4: Yeah, do you feel like there's any truth to the spygate.
- 33:38Speaker 2: And man, look, I mean let's let's just let's just
- 33:43Speaker 2: say this. It's it's it's not one spy gate, it's
- 33:48Speaker 2: two spy gates. There's all kinds of stuff that you
- 33:51Speaker 2: know it's but but in this, in this, in this
- 33:54Speaker 2: business of professional sports. You know, Al Davis used to
- 33:59Speaker 2: say it, if you ain't cheating, you't try.
- 34:00Speaker 4: Man.
- 34:01Speaker 2: And some people, some people you know you you find it,
- 34:05Speaker 2: You find a way to get it done. And in
- 34:08Speaker 2: the game in between the lines. It ain't holding if
- 34:11Speaker 2: they don't call it.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Yeah, but spying.
- 34:15Speaker 2: If they don't. If they don't call it, they gotta
- 34:18Speaker 2: call it. The league has to throw the challenge flag
- 34:21Speaker 2: on itself. Yeah, and they ain't never doing that. We're
- 34:25Speaker 2: not gonna be baseball. Remember that baseball got some teint it.
- 34:30Speaker 2: He ain't doing that. You're not gonna see no asteris
- 34:32Speaker 2: buy any super Bowl? Trust that when do you when
- 34:35Speaker 2: you come back to it.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Obviously you didn't play in Las Vegas for a Super Bowl,
- 34:38Speaker 1: but you're during super Bowl Week? Like, is there a
- 34:40Speaker 1: piece of nostalgia every time you come back and do
- 34:43Speaker 1: all this stuff?
- 34:44Speaker 2: Always always, yeah, always, just just the memory the memories
- 34:48Speaker 2: of because because when you're actually when you're like so
- 34:51Speaker 2: when I was in the league, I would not come
- 34:53Speaker 2: to a super Bowl until I played one or until
- 34:55Speaker 2: I won one. So I never came until until until
- 34:58Speaker 2: then I came to and then I didn't come again
- 35:02Speaker 2: until until after ninety nine, until after the two thousand season.
- 35:07Speaker 2: So you're always wondering when you're playing, like what's happening?
- 35:11Speaker 2: What's going on out there?
- 35:12Speaker 4: What?
- 35:12Speaker 2: What's what?
- 35:13Speaker 4: Like?
- 35:13Speaker 2: What what's what's what's happening? And now being on this
- 35:19Speaker 2: side of it, I'm always thinking about, like, man, what
- 35:22Speaker 2: are they talking about? Like what are they what are
- 35:24Speaker 2: they game planning? What's the scheme? Like? Like the guys
- 35:27Speaker 2: what what? What are what are they planning on? Because
- 35:31Speaker 2: you you talk about how much you're going to man
- 35:34Speaker 2: after we win this, after we win this, here's what
- 35:37Speaker 2: we're gonna do after we win. Oh, I can't wait.
- 35:40Speaker 2: I can't. Like you're you're manifesting your destiny and so
- 35:43Speaker 2: you're talking about it. You can see it, and that's
- 35:46Speaker 2: why when you lose it hurts so much.
- 35:48Speaker 1: There's obviously a lot of passion in your voice, like
- 35:50Speaker 1: where did you get this championship? Mindset? Has it always
- 35:53Speaker 1: been since your young child, or did it have to
- 35:55Speaker 1: develop over process of elimination of trying new things and
- 35:59Speaker 1: kind of having to pay it if it okay? This mindset,
- 36:01Speaker 1: this way, this body of work is not working for
- 36:03Speaker 1: me right now, Like where did you get to where?
- 36:05Speaker 1: What we're seeing right now?
- 36:06Speaker 2: When you're the youngest and because of age, size or whatever,
- 36:12Speaker 2: you don't get to win, it burns in you. Like
- 36:15Speaker 2: I I so I basketball is my first sport. And
- 36:20Speaker 2: my brothers they all played basketball, and my two brothers
- 36:23Speaker 2: that were really good. When I got big enough, they
- 36:26Speaker 2: wouldn't play me, so they didn't want to lose to me.
- 36:29Speaker 2: So it's it's it's literally just it's just competitive in me. Yeah,
- 36:32Speaker 2: you know, I compete at everything. Everything that I do,
- 36:35Speaker 2: I compete and I'm always competing against myself. I'm just
- 36:37Speaker 2: trying to get better, just trying to get better. I'm
- 36:39Speaker 2: trying to live life better, trying to be a better
- 36:41Speaker 2: human every day.
- 36:41Speaker 1: There's got to be like a with football players or
- 36:43Speaker 1: anybody who plays a sport in general, there's got to
- 36:45Speaker 1: be like this insane competitiveness like about you in every
- 36:49Speaker 1: fast I feel like it doesn't leave any part of
- 36:51Speaker 1: your life, Like, what about it? What now? Are you
- 36:52Speaker 1: like the most competitive.
- 36:53Speaker 2: In probably golf?
- 37:00Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, big golfer.
- 37:02Speaker 2: I love golf. I love golf. It's it's the most
- 37:04Speaker 2: mentally challenging thing that I've ever done in my life.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Like it's you know, I've never been so mad and
- 37:13Speaker 2: disappointed in myself for not being able to mentally focus
- 37:16Speaker 2: at something that doesn't hit back. You know, It's like,
- 37:21Speaker 2: it's crazy if you.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Could play somebody want a celebrity in golf, just to
- 37:26Speaker 1: know that you could beat them? Who to be to
- 37:28Speaker 1: know that I can be, not know that you would
- 37:30Speaker 1: beat that, but if you want to prove yourself like
- 37:32Speaker 1: a guy like Michael Jordan, we know he.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Plays all Tiger, Like I would like to play Tiger
- 37:36Speaker 2: in the match and think you'd be Tiger. I'm saying
- 37:38Speaker 2: I would like to play Tiger.
- 37:41Speaker 4: Tiger.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Come on, man, Like, really, have.
- 37:44Speaker 1: You seen the clip? There's a there's a barstool podcast
- 37:46Speaker 1: called for Play and they did a long drive competition
- 37:49Speaker 1: with Tiger. Have you seen that clip? Yeah, he's on
- 37:51Speaker 1: his knees. Yeah, incredible drives him? How drives him? That
- 37:54Speaker 1: is just crazy?
- 37:55Speaker 4: Do you got any good? Uh?
- 37:57Speaker 3: I got to play with London Fletcher, like his last year.
- 38:00Speaker 3: But did do you have any good London Fletcher stories?
- 38:02Speaker 3: Because you was U was with him when he was young,
- 38:04Speaker 3: like undrafted, like he always had this look at his
- 38:06Speaker 3: eye he kept at the end his entire career.
- 38:08Speaker 4: But do you have any good London Fletcher stories?
- 38:10Speaker 2: So the best this is my best. I don't know
- 38:13Speaker 2: if we named him dot com dot com Fletcher dot com,
- 38:18Speaker 2: so we started calling him dot com. But here's how
- 38:21Speaker 2: I met London. I was on the coats and we
- 38:24Speaker 2: had a joint practice because Jim Moore he he and
- 38:29Speaker 2: Dick Vermill they coached together at U c.
- 38:30Speaker 3: L A.
- 38:31Speaker 2: So we meet at Champagne, Illinois, and we have a
- 38:33Speaker 2: joint practice, all right, and we get ready to do
- 38:39Speaker 2: one on ones and uh, like, the starting linebacker comes up.
- 38:44Speaker 2: I don't I don't remember who it was. And I
- 38:46Speaker 2: came up and I come out the backfield, I run around,
- 38:50Speaker 2: catch the ball. Then we moved to the other side.
- 38:53Speaker 2: I come up. The other starting linebacker came up, caught
- 38:57Speaker 2: the ball on him, and then it's time for me
- 38:59Speaker 2: to go again. And the linebacker that's up is like
- 39:03Speaker 2: wearing number sixty six, and I turned around. I'm like,
- 39:07Speaker 2: can y'all get somebody else in here? And it was London.
- 39:14Speaker 2: It was Loundon because it was his rookie year, and
- 39:16Speaker 2: he was like, he was like, you don't want to
- 39:19Speaker 2: go against me, You don't want to go against me.
- 39:21Speaker 2: I'm like, look, man, I ain't trying to get hurt
- 39:22Speaker 2: messing with no rookie, right, all right? And two years
- 39:27Speaker 2: later I'm playing with him and we line up and
- 39:31Speaker 2: he and he reminded me. He was like, hey, I
- 39:33Speaker 2: know you don't notice, but I was number sixty six
- 39:36Speaker 2: when we were in camp.
- 39:39Speaker 4: I said, okay, did he ever do have your strap you?
- 39:42Speaker 4: One on ones? Oh?
- 39:44Speaker 2: No, not never. No, he could not. No. But you know,
- 39:47Speaker 2: pass past linebacker, passed right, pass pro, you know, pass pro,
- 39:53Speaker 2: meet him in the egg gap, catching him off the edge.
- 39:55Speaker 2: He won his battles there. You know, I put up
- 39:59Speaker 2: a good fight and I'm supposed to lose that. I'm
- 40:01Speaker 2: just supposed to occupy your time, right, I supposed to win.
- 40:04Speaker 2: I'm just supposed to get in your way death.
- 40:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Yeah. But but one on one he no chance. I
- 40:10Speaker 2: told him. I say, listen, here's the reality. Ain't whether
- 40:13Speaker 2: I'm going to catch the ball. The reality is you're
- 40:15Speaker 2: not gonna touch me. Like in this drill me. Winning
- 40:20Speaker 2: is whether you touch me or not.
- 40:22Speaker 4: Has there been a linebacker to strap you, whether it's
- 40:25Speaker 4: in a game.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, oh yeah, it's it's listen, it's going to happen, right,
- 40:30Speaker 2: I mean it's yeah, it's happened many a times. But
- 40:33Speaker 2: but like we're talking situation. You know what I'm saying.
- 40:37Speaker 2: If it's if it's third and I gotta win, whatever
- 40:39Speaker 2: that is, it ain't happening. Now. You can catch me
- 40:41Speaker 2: on second down. You can probably catch me, you know.
- 40:44Speaker 2: But if if if we're calling the play and this
- 40:48Speaker 2: play is it's third in this and we're going to
- 40:51Speaker 2: they're calling they're calling my route or a play to me.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Unless they double team me, like and take me out
- 40:59Speaker 2: and make the quarterback not throw it to me, I'm winning.
- 41:02Speaker 2: That's that's just that was like guarantee.
- 41:04Speaker 3: I mean you essentially, I mean you were like known
- 41:06Speaker 3: for the folk route coming out of the backfield running vertical.
- 41:09Speaker 3: I know that was absolute hell for any linebacker to
- 41:12Speaker 3: have to do just cover Marshall out of the best.
- 41:14Speaker 2: What are you thinking about, You're like, Okay, it's gonna
- 41:16Speaker 2: break in, You're gonna break.
- 41:17Speaker 4: Out right, and Amity.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Runs by you, You're like, oh.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Are you strapping down?
- 41:25Speaker 4: Marshall? Yeah, I mean you know, I'll get him every
- 41:27Speaker 4: now and then, do you think? So? Yeah, Man, I'm
- 41:29Speaker 4: gonna ge I'm gonna have my day.
- 41:30Speaker 2: I'm gonna have that out of ten times, I'm gonna win.
- 41:33Speaker 4: I'm gonna guess right at some point, I'm.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Gonna point the other time I fell down.
- 41:39Speaker 3: I'm gonna get I'll have to guess, but I'll guess
- 41:41Speaker 3: right at some point, and then that's when I'll.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Stop playing, you know what I mean.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Now I'm shall, you know, get somebody else say, I'm
- 41:47Speaker 3: not trying to get hurt against somebody like you.
- 41:50Speaker 4: Uh, dude.
- 41:51Speaker 3: You were talking earlier about always wanting to be the
- 41:54Speaker 3: running back, like never leave the field, be that guy
- 41:56Speaker 3: at all times. Talk about like when Steven Jackson was
- 41:59Speaker 3: coming in and you start splitting characters and splitting reps
- 42:02Speaker 3: in the later part of your career, Like how was
- 42:04Speaker 3: that for you?
- 42:06Speaker 2: So the story is different than that. When they drafted,
- 42:11Speaker 2: Steve and I had a conversation because Steven and I
- 42:13Speaker 2: we had the same agent, and I said to Steve
- 42:15Speaker 2: and I say, look, here's the reality. And I told Mike,
- 42:17Speaker 2: I said, here's the reality. If you want the job,
- 42:21Speaker 2: you got to beat me out. I'm not giving it
- 42:22Speaker 2: to you like I'm not. You have to take this job.
- 42:27Speaker 2: And I told him, I said, the only reason why
- 42:30Speaker 2: that's the case is in this huddle, the best guy
- 42:34Speaker 2: gonna be here for these dudes. And so if you
- 42:37Speaker 2: beat me up, you're the best guy. That's it. But
- 42:41Speaker 2: I knew I was, you know, I was. I think
- 42:43Speaker 2: I was like thirty two, you know, and I was like,
- 42:46Speaker 2: I couldn't play whole games anymore. I needed, you know,
- 42:50Speaker 2: I needed to kind of split time a little bit,
- 42:55Speaker 2: you know. I just I wasn't the back I was right,
- 42:58Speaker 2: I once was. So it was it was good. He
- 43:02Speaker 2: learned a lot, you know. I sat down with him
- 43:07Speaker 2: and went over film and talked about here's what I see,
- 43:10Speaker 2: here's what I'm thinking, this is my prestat read you
- 43:13Speaker 2: know whatever. Whatever I could teach him, I taught him,
- 43:17Speaker 2: you know, just just in not like taking him under
- 43:19Speaker 2: my wing. Just I want when he's in there, I
- 43:22Speaker 2: want him.
- 43:23Speaker 4: To have.
- 43:25Speaker 2: What I have and how I see things for the
- 43:27Speaker 2: other team guys in there, so and he was he
- 43:32Speaker 2: was he was awesome, man, he he never. I mean,
- 43:35Speaker 2: you're you're your early pick. You know, you're you're playing
- 43:38Speaker 2: behind you know, guys in his eleven twelfth year, right,
- 43:43Speaker 2: you know, and it's like ship, you can't win the job.
- 43:47Speaker 2: That could mess with your confidence, you know, that started
- 43:50Speaker 2: to Yeah, that started to mess with your confidence. And
- 43:54Speaker 2: the only thing that kept me in the game was
- 43:56Speaker 2: because you know, like the mentals out of the game,
- 44:01Speaker 2: you know, mentally mentally, I just I didn't make many mistakes.
- 44:06Speaker 2: And when you can, when you can, when your mind
- 44:09Speaker 2: is sharp and you cannot make mistakes, and you could
- 44:11Speaker 2: be efficient with carries, always get positive yards. Although you
- 44:15Speaker 2: don't hit the home run the way you used to,
- 44:17Speaker 2: and you're not you can't do all the things that
- 44:18Speaker 2: you used to do, you could still be effective.
- 44:22Speaker 1: How was how was that process when you start to
- 44:24Speaker 1: figure out, Okay, I can't hit the home run, I
- 44:26Speaker 1: am losing a step, Like father time is starting to
- 44:28Speaker 1: catch up with you.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Right, oh, yeah, you're in.
- 44:32Speaker 1: When did the denial turn into acceptance?
- 44:38Speaker 2: Maybe the season before my last So my the twelfth year,
- 44:43Speaker 2: I had a series of games that I mean, like
- 44:47Speaker 2: I never got tackled by the first guy. And and
- 44:50Speaker 2: so it happened probably three or four games where single
- 44:55Speaker 2: guy ran up on me. I put a move on
- 44:57Speaker 2: him and he got me, and I was and I
- 44:59Speaker 2: was like, and I was like, man, you know, hmm,
- 45:06Speaker 2: you just you're thinking like, oh, oh, that was a
- 45:07Speaker 2: good type. He barely got my leg. Oh he barely.
- 45:10Speaker 2: Oh he hit my leg and it hit my other foot.
- 45:14Speaker 2: And those are things that that first guy wouldn't even
- 45:17Speaker 2: touch me right now and now yeah, and now I'm
- 45:23Speaker 2: getting tackled by the first guy. To me, that was like,
- 45:26Speaker 2: you know, that's like a wounded animal out there. I'm like, listen,
- 45:28Speaker 2: there's blood in the water. There's no way I talk
- 45:31Speaker 2: too much smack when I play, like, there's no way
- 45:33Speaker 2: I'm gonna be out here. And I can't. I got
- 45:35Speaker 2: I can't make the first guy miss. I'm in trouble.
- 45:40Speaker 4: Who's some of the best ship talkers you went against.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Johnny Randall, Rodney Harrison straight hand talked all day. Oh Sap,
- 45:53Speaker 2: Oh my god, Sap wouldn't shut up, would not shut up.
- 45:58Speaker 1: It's impressive to see a big guy that doesn't shut up. Yeah,
- 46:01Speaker 1: you know, you can kind of motor around that much
- 46:02Speaker 1: and keep the Josh sets going the whole time.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Sad was Sad was Sad was the one, and he
- 46:07Speaker 2: had an issue with this guard that we had, uh,
- 46:10Speaker 2: Frankie Garcia. And he talks back to him the whole game,
- 46:15Speaker 2: called his name out the whole every time. He was
- 46:18Speaker 2: Frankie coming to get you, Frankie, look.
- 46:21Speaker 4: At me anything you're saying to Frankie.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Hey, FRANKI, it's okay, brother, We're here for you.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh well the first the first time it happened,
- 46:29Speaker 2: he was like Frankie, Frankie and Frankie Frankie and and
- 46:33Speaker 2: I'm looking this way. Frankie's back as to Sad, and
- 46:36Speaker 2: I say, Frankie talking to you.
- 46:38Speaker 1: O ship, frank you gotta do something, frank stand up
- 46:42Speaker 1: for yourself. Frankie an offensive lineman. And a lot of
- 46:46Speaker 1: those dudes are South spoken cats. Was he was he
- 46:49Speaker 1: a talker? Was Frankie talker?
- 46:50Speaker 2: Was he kind of keeping nothing to say?
- 46:52Speaker 1: Frankie killing with kindness kind of guy.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Something happened, Frankie was playing somewhere else in him and
- 46:57Speaker 2: sap something something happened and they had issues. And when
- 47:01Speaker 2: that's when anytime sat played him regardless of he was
- 47:05Speaker 2: playing on it. He got after him.
- 47:07Speaker 4: Damn.
- 47:08Speaker 1: How's a bad guy of on your back?
- 47:09Speaker 4: How do you?
- 47:10Speaker 2: Uh?
- 47:11Speaker 4: How do you feel like the game has gotten softer
- 47:13Speaker 4: since you, since your guys era.
- 47:14Speaker 2: I wouldn't say softer, They just they're they're they're playing
- 47:18Speaker 2: smarter now. In playing smarter, what they've done is unfair
- 47:23Speaker 2: to defense. You know, guys are running across the middle
- 47:26Speaker 2: like their Bambi. They can't be touched. They trying to
- 47:29Speaker 2: play brave like like you know what I'm saying, like, dude,
- 47:32Speaker 2: stop running across the middle and you're gonna get up
- 47:34Speaker 2: talking smack to somebody because they can't hit you unless
- 47:37Speaker 2: you look at them like if if if if I IF.
- 47:41Speaker 2: I always say if I duck, that means I saw you. Yeah,
- 47:45Speaker 2: So that creates helmet to helmet. More helmet to helmet
- 47:48Speaker 2: contact happens when the guy ducks your linebacker. You're going
- 47:51Speaker 2: in he duck, bam, helme with the helmet flag on you.
- 47:54Speaker 2: They've putt they put too much of his responsibility on
- 47:58Speaker 2: the defensive guy. The core back throwing the ball, not
- 48:01Speaker 2: protecting his receiver. The offensive coordinator calling these plays putting
- 48:04Speaker 2: these guys in these kamakazi situations, none of them are responsible.
- 48:09Speaker 1: And giving a lot of interpretation up to the referee. Yeah,
- 48:12Speaker 1: putting them in a difficult position.
- 48:15Speaker 2: And listen, any hit that looks bad, they got to
- 48:18Speaker 2: throw a flag, got to they have to.
- 48:20Speaker 4: Yeah, what were your guys' off seasons?
- 48:23Speaker 3: Like I'm trying to remember because we had all start
- 48:25Speaker 3: on and he was talking about, you know, how.
- 48:28Speaker 4: The Union, how it shifted. We asked for all this
- 48:30Speaker 4: off time and stuff like that, Like what.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Were your guys? How long were your guys' off seasons?
- 48:34Speaker 3: Like when did you have to report when? So your
- 48:37Speaker 3: last game is in January?
- 48:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so last game in January. Let's say February. We
- 48:44Speaker 2: started off season conditioning and right after the draft. Off
- 48:50Speaker 2: season conditioning would be from February until the beginning of April,
- 48:55Speaker 2: and then you would leave after April. You'd come back
- 48:57Speaker 2: right after the draft and do the first mini camp.
- 49:00Speaker 2: They'd have a you know, if you were first or
- 49:02Speaker 2: second your guy with the rookies, you do that mini camp,
- 49:05Speaker 2: and then the next week they'd have the Bets would
- 49:09Speaker 2: come and you do another mini camp with the Bets
- 49:11Speaker 2: and the Rooks yeah, and and camp was six weeks long.
- 49:18Speaker 4: Damn man, we do that?
- 49:19Speaker 1: I mean, and now I even talking about two days.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I had a practice two days, not for real,
- 49:25Speaker 1: real days, not like not like it's only too like
- 49:29Speaker 1: my rookie year of two day would be like practice
- 49:30Speaker 1: in the morning with pads, little jogged through in the afternoon.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:34Speaker 4: No, we we were.
- 49:35Speaker 2: We were full strap ten days, full tackle too. Oh yeah,
- 49:40Speaker 2: tackle to the ground goal line like live.
- 49:47Speaker 3: Now when you when you were Marshall Fulk m v
- 49:50Speaker 3: p Martia Fulk, were you having to participate in the
- 49:53Speaker 3: other two days?
- 49:53Speaker 2: I still did it? Yeah, I still did it, ye
- 49:57Speaker 2: because like that was I always my conditioning was how
- 50:04Speaker 2: I beat people. I was like you when we got
- 50:07Speaker 2: to the fourth quarter. I know you didn't work as
- 50:10Speaker 2: hard as me.
- 50:10Speaker 4: I knew it.
- 50:11Speaker 2: There's no way you worked as hard as me, No way.
- 50:15Speaker 4: What was what was it like? You had?
- 50:18Speaker 3: You know, you had to scale positions like yourself. You
- 50:20Speaker 3: mentioned Tory Holt, Isaac Bruce. Was all your guys' work
- 50:23Speaker 3: ethics just sickening like you're explaining.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Yeah, we pushed each other like in conditioning, like we
- 50:31Speaker 2: were all we raced, We pushed each other. Like some
- 50:36Speaker 2: of the stuff you saw in games wasn't even close
- 50:39Speaker 2: to what we did in practice. Like if you if
- 50:42Speaker 2: you thought the greatest show on Turfin, if you watch
- 50:44Speaker 2: some of the practices, unbelievable, just unbelievable.
- 50:48Speaker 1: The joint practice is today like the worst. It's let's
- 50:51Speaker 1: take a war. I can't imagine what they were like
- 50:53Speaker 1: when you played.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Well now in today's in today's game, that's all they
- 50:58Speaker 2: have to They understand that they getting to fight practice over.
- 51:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, but it's also there's not a whole hour
- 51:04Speaker 1: at the same time, like there's not you know, if
- 51:06Speaker 1: you get like a little scuffle that there's not you
- 51:09Speaker 1: don't have to worry about penalties. Guys are playing a
- 51:10Speaker 1: lot harder and a lot dirty. I feel like joint
- 51:12Speaker 1: practices are actually more difficult than games to an extent.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I I I don't know, Like for for us,
- 51:21Speaker 2: a joint practice was easier than our practice solo. Yeah,
- 51:25Speaker 2: because a joint practice, I'm going against somebody who don't
- 51:27Speaker 2: know me. When you're going against somebody, when you practice
- 51:30Speaker 2: against somebody who know what you do every damn day,
- 51:32Speaker 2: you know how hard that is to defeat him every day?
- 51:35Speaker 1: It's like to learn everything.
- 51:36Speaker 2: When the team you got to play in your division,
- 51:38Speaker 2: you gotta play him twice. That second time you play him,
- 51:41Speaker 2: it's hard. If you play him a third time, you're like,
- 51:43Speaker 2: we beat him twice, can we beat him again? It's hard.
- 51:47Speaker 2: But now you get to go up against another team
- 51:50Speaker 2: that's like, oh man, this this is cake this this
- 51:53Speaker 2: guy don't know my tricks playing.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Uh, make a lot of relationships in football, obviously, who
- 51:59Speaker 1: is give me your three teammates of all time? Doesn't
- 52:01Speaker 1: have to be best players, just the boys like hanging
- 52:03Speaker 1: out with the.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Most Todd Light, Uh, Tory Holt and who else? Oh
- 52:18Speaker 2: a guy that so so this is funny. So my
- 52:21Speaker 2: backup in college was my backup in the pros for real? Yeah,
- 52:25Speaker 2: a guy named Justin Watson.
- 52:27Speaker 1: How to get to the NFL playing behind you? If
- 52:29Speaker 1: you said you never come off the field, it just happened.
- 52:33Speaker 4: Was he younger than you? And then like you leave,
- 52:35Speaker 4: he has a year he's doing it?
- 52:36Speaker 2: Uh huh, Yeah I left. So he was my backup.
- 52:40Speaker 2: I left. He had two years. He was in camp
- 52:43Speaker 2: with the Chargers. He was in camp with the Chargers.
- 52:49Speaker 2: Was was was was on their practice squad for two
- 52:51Speaker 2: years and then got picked up when I got traded
- 52:53Speaker 2: to the Rams.
- 52:54Speaker 4: You got any good?
- 52:55Speaker 2: Uh?
- 52:56Speaker 3: Your best post Super Bowl memory in that next week
- 53:00Speaker 3: two span after you guys win the title?
- 53:02Speaker 2: Oh man, just every every everywhere I went, I think
- 53:08Speaker 2: I spent. I spent the week down in Miami South Beach,
- 53:11Speaker 2: rented a yacht like just just yeah, I mean I was.
- 53:16Speaker 2: I mean, you gotta remember I never won anything in football, Like,
- 53:20Speaker 2: I never wanted anything. I never wanted to football.
- 53:23Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 53:24Speaker 2: You never like I never I won a championship in basketball, baseball,
- 53:28Speaker 2: I won state running track. I never won a championship
- 53:31Speaker 2: in football, and my the first championship I went in
- 53:35Speaker 2: football is in the NFL. I lost my damn mind.
- 53:40Speaker 1: Going crazy too.
- 53:41Speaker 4: Most money you spent in the night, So I was.
- 53:45Speaker 2: I was a smart part of you. You know, I
- 53:47Speaker 2: didn't always take it on. I always had teammates with me,
- 53:49Speaker 2: so we split the bill, so always we always split
- 53:53Speaker 2: the bill.
- 53:54Speaker 1: So credit card roulette, nothing like that.
- 53:56Speaker 2: I mean that happened a couple of times.
- 53:57Speaker 1: But I'm sure you didn't get gone.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you don't make sure you know I've
- 54:01Speaker 2: I've yeah, I mean it's happened. It's happened.
- 54:05Speaker 4: What's the heaviest bill you've seen?
- 54:07Speaker 2: Uh? One of the trips we took to Vegas?
- 54:16Speaker 1: Uh what.
- 54:25Speaker 4: Man? I have to come to you, man, Yeah, Flavor man,
- 54:33Speaker 4: because we saw so.
- 54:34Speaker 1: I'm in Michigan, right, yeah, Michigan Michigan vers Nebraska a
- 54:37Speaker 1: couple of years ago. I had to come.
- 54:39Speaker 2: I had to come in here to call my own
- 54:41Speaker 2: version of how you doing. I'm good, man, I'm good,
- 54:48Speaker 2: no complaints with no complaints, no interruption.
- 54:51Speaker 4: I gotta break out, man, I just wanted to come
- 54:54Speaker 4: to love man.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Probably see probably tonight. Let's do that, okay, man, my man.
- 55:02Speaker 4: Ah, excuse you're good. Welcome to busting with the boys.
- 55:07Speaker 4: Many yeah, Marshalls right on.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Man, Hey, I did see him. The fact that I
- 55:14Speaker 1: saw that chain, I was like, is that he did?
- 55:16Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, Flave just jumping in.
- 55:19Speaker 1: Hey what a water in the show.
- 55:21Speaker 4: Yeah, how do you know, Flavor? Flave? Oh?
- 55:24Speaker 1: Man, you super Bowl when you can see Yeah, he
- 55:31Speaker 1: was on the yacht.
- 55:32Speaker 4: Is him popping in? Yeah?
- 55:33Speaker 2: Hey man, me and Flavor we go back by that
- 55:38Speaker 2: dude's a pioneer, man. Yeah, you gotta love some flave.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Who's the first dude you were starstruck by him?
- 55:46Speaker 1: Flavor of love?
- 55:51Speaker 2: Probably I was in college. I just like burst it
- 55:59Speaker 2: onto the scene my freshman year the next year, and
- 56:02Speaker 2: I went up to LA to watch uh, to watch
- 56:06Speaker 2: Martin and to get to get to meet Martin Lawrence,
- 56:09Speaker 2: you know, like in the time when he was doing Martin.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Oh man, I was just like, you know, I wasn't
- 56:15Speaker 2: into the whole Hollywood thing, but to see, like, you know,
- 56:19Speaker 2: most actors play somebody else, but Martin is Martin. Like
- 56:22Speaker 2: Martin is Martin Lawrence, so like you're getting to see
- 56:26Speaker 2: the dude be himself. It was just like, damn, this
- 56:30Speaker 2: is this dude, this is Martin.
- 56:31Speaker 1: Man.
- 56:32Speaker 2: He was like the first star star that I met.
- 56:35Speaker 3: How about a flippant who was the first dude who
- 56:40Speaker 3: you weren't necessarily a starstruke by, but you're surprised that
- 56:42Speaker 3: they were super like knew who you were or were
- 56:45Speaker 3: starstruck by you.
- 56:49Speaker 4: I'm trying to like, oh man, this dude he knows
- 56:52Speaker 4: who I am.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Someone comes up there, I'm a big fan of you, Like, bro,
- 56:54Speaker 1: you're you right?
- 56:55Speaker 4: Yeah, Like Charles Woodson in here early, He's like oh yeah,
- 56:57Speaker 4: busting with the boys on night, Charles.
- 57:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to like, we got a call. I'm
- 57:14Speaker 2: trying to think. I think it was I think it
- 57:20Speaker 2: was jay Z. We got a call because he went
- 57:22Speaker 2: to Jersey. He wore it in the in the video
- 57:25Speaker 2: he's in a he's in there, like he wearing a
- 57:27Speaker 2: bunch of videos. This was like, you know, late nineties, Jay,
- 57:32Speaker 2: maybe early two thousand and j one of my one
- 57:35Speaker 2: of one of my jerseys is.
- 57:37Speaker 4: In his video.
- 57:39Speaker 1: That's a good one.
- 57:40Speaker 2: Like I was like me, like my jersey. You know cats,
- 57:44Speaker 2: cats from New York. They don't want to Yeah, they
- 57:47Speaker 2: don't want to outside of Jersey when you're from New
- 57:49Speaker 2: York there wearing all New York and stuff.
- 57:52Speaker 4: That is sick. Anthony. Should we ask him anything before
- 57:55Speaker 4: we leave? Before we head out? Is he still in there?
- 57:57Speaker 4: Oh yeah, question.
- 58:01Speaker 3: Absolutely, Like so many of these texts, Okay, all right,
- 58:19Speaker 3: we have uh before we let you go talk about
- 58:23Speaker 3: a drug free world.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I know we've been having some good times here,
- 58:27Speaker 2: but as you guys see, like uh, I literally I
- 58:31Speaker 2: went to talk to some high schoolers and and these
- 58:33Speaker 2: kids man there, they have no idea, they have no
- 58:36Speaker 2: idea fitting all in drugs, what's going on? And they're curious.
- 58:42Speaker 2: And a lot of the times, as you know, we
- 58:44Speaker 2: were kids, the many, the many of your parents or
- 58:46Speaker 2: somebody said say, don't do what do you do?
- 58:50Speaker 4: You do?
- 58:51Speaker 2: Curious And we've just taken a different approach. I tell people,
- 58:56Speaker 2: go to drug freeworld dot org. We're not gonna tell
- 58:58Speaker 2: you to say. We're not gonna We're not gonna tell you.
- 59:00Speaker 2: We're not gonna tell you that don't do. We're gonna
- 59:01Speaker 2: tell you educate yourself. Like just like you use Google,
- 59:05Speaker 2: go to our site, get the information. Don't let your
- 59:08Speaker 2: friend tell you this drug made me feel like this
- 59:11Speaker 2: and then you try it and you die or something
- 59:14Speaker 2: crazy happens. Literally, we have educator kids information, anything and
- 59:21Speaker 2: everything under the sun that you would need just to
- 59:23Speaker 2: understand before you try it. What's out there for you?
- 59:28Speaker 4: But what uh, what got you into that?
- 59:31Speaker 2: I just I grew up around drugs and listen, I
- 59:35Speaker 2: made it to the Hall of Fame. And I wasn't
- 59:36Speaker 2: the best player on my team in high school. There's
- 59:40Speaker 2: I wasn't the best player at my community.
- 59:41Speaker 3: I mean, you seem like you played every position. I
- 59:43Speaker 3: would almost assume that you were probably the best player.
- 59:45Speaker 2: I wasn't. I wasn't.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Here's six games.
- 59:50Speaker 2: The best. The best guy sometimes didn't show up. You know,
- 59:54Speaker 2: he was cool, he was smoking weed, he was cool,
- 59:56Speaker 2: he was you know, and then eventually you know that
- 59:59Speaker 2: guy was the guy. You know, after my rookie year,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: I go back home. He's the guy on drugs.
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: It's like, so, you know, what do you do? What
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: do you do? How you let people know? I believe
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: the best way to let people know is by educating
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: him and giving him the opportunities to, like, Hey, at
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: your own liberties. Go to the site drug freeworld dot org.
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: Get the information, make the right decision.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: Was it just like an area that just touched you
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: to be like, I want to like get in the
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: space or was there anything?
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: I was always in the space. I grew up around it.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: I grew up around it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: You know it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: It has touched me deeply. You know, I've lost many
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: of friends. I've had family members partake and have issues,
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: you know, and and recover, you know, to live a
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: better life. But everybody don't make it. Everybody don't know
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: how you.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: Know in your experience, do you approach conversations like that
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: with somebody close to you that you would you know,
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: it's like you want to immerse yourself into their world
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: and try to help them out, but you struggle like
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: bridging that gap.
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: For people that are like watching right now.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: I know, I think of a couple of situations in
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: my circles where you're like, you're just trying to find
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: the lane of like getting them the help they getting
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: them the help they need, I guess without like being
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: like forcing yourself onto them, like in your experience, Like
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: what advice would you.
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: Have with that?
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: What I what I, what I say is and what
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: I'm always trying to do is anything anything that we
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: we find ourselves needing in life. You gotta find out why,
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: like well why do I like that? Why why do
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: I need to do this? What? What is this masking?
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Because it's masking something, And if you can get down
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: to the core, then you can solve the problem. And
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: the reality is they might not want to. They might
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: not want the problems solve. They might like how they live,
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: how they live their life. And when that's when that's
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: the case, then you you got to back off because
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: until they are ready, it's not gonna happen. You can't
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: make it happen for them. I can't make it happen
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: for them. They have to be ready.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like the hardest part, right it is.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: Yeah, just trying to get somebody to get another their
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: own way.
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: And like backing up when you're just like, you know,
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: you care about somebody and you're you.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Know, yeah, because anytime that type of situation where you're
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: dealing with somebody that's using or abusing, it's like you
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: want to help them. But usually with people that are
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: abusing something, when you go in approach them with that situation,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: it's usually met with resistance and it ends up and
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: it killed the messenger type of situation.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: Yeah, do you go around and speak a lot?
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah. And you know, the the idea is
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: that it's it's just street drugs. It's not just street drugs.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: You know, there's there's some prescription drugs that's that's out here.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I mean, prescription drugs are a whole another ballgame, like
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: they're i mean playing. Obviously, you get in there, they
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: give you a couple of pills, right, Hey, this is
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: gonna make it feel ahole better. You take it and
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: you're like, oh, I get it. I understand why people
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: get addicted to these things and their lives easily end
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: up getting ruined because it is I mean, it's a deal.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: It's a bit of a deal.
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: It's awesome that you're going to do that too.
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: Like you were obviously pivotal and influence on the field
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: first bout Hall of Famer, and so you have influence
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: beyond that, And it's really cool to hear that you
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: go around and speak and and try to you know,
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: advise and mentor and speak to kids because you're you know,
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: you're Marshall fuk bro, you are Marshall fulk.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: Got to use the platform for you know, others, just
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: other than just making money. Yeah, yeah, you gotta make
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: a difference to in this world, no question.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: Last one, hang on, hang on, right before he goes
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: first ballot Hall of Famer, What was it like that

- 1:03:57Speaker 2: and friends. They announced it, they brought you to the
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: super Bowl and then you would you would go meet
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: somewhere and they would do like a press conference wherever
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: that wherever that was for the people that was that
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: decided to come.

- 1:04:19Speaker 2: no way that I'm not getting in, no way, you know.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: That's all I kept thinking. And my my agent did
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: a deal with Anheuser Bush being out. It was in
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Saint Louis at the time, the headquarters and at the

- 1:04:44Speaker 2: the NFL, they had a hotel like the bottom floor.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: I mean, we packed it with two three hundred people
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: that's there, you know, and we're watching and I'm and
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: I'm standing and as they come on and they getting
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: ready to call the names the first time ever, I thought,
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: what if they don't call my name? I'm standing there, like,
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: what if they don't call my name?
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: Like we just got all these people here at the
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: boy here.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: I mean, and when I think back, I'm like, man,
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: that's like somebody saying no running away at the altar.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: You know, I'm like, I'm thinking to myself, oh my god,
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: what if they don't call my name?
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: You start living tactically like at all the exits, like
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: where's the easiest way out of here if they don't
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: call my name? Try to figure out.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and then man, like three names in they said
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: my name.
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: I was like, oh my god, Yeah, I got in
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: your head too much, oh man.

- 1:05:47Speaker 2: because you tell you got to tell them where you're
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: gonna be. Car pulled up, takes me to the place,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: take me to the place where they're doing the interview,
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: and on the ride, like your football life is literally
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: playing in your head from your literally coach, your high
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: school coach. Things that people taught you, things like how
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: many people had been on this journey with you to
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: end up, you know, in this place like like hold
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: on wait, like there's at the time, like there's only
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: two hundred and like sixteen, like two hundred and seventy
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: five of these got and I'm one of them. Like
