- 0:11Speaker 1: We don't know if they've never seen a human, but
- 0:14Speaker 1: there's definitely plenty of caribou out here in this landscape
- 0:18Speaker 1: that haven't seen humans. It's kind of what makes caribou
- 0:23Speaker 1: hunting fun, right, is that like you get to hunt
- 0:25Speaker 1: unpressured animals.
- 0:27Speaker 2: There's no Wait till buck ever that would do this.
- 0:30Speaker 1: You know, there's probably not an elk in the lower
- 0:33Speaker 1: forty eight that would do this either.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I haven't even seen that clip yet. That was beautiful
- 1:03Speaker 2: or trailer or whatever that was. All right, Welcome to
- 1:06Speaker 2: the twelve and twenty six podcast. This is a companion
- 1:10Speaker 2: show to our twelve and twenty six Hunting Fish films
- 1:13Speaker 2: coming out this year. Hopefully you've already seen My Manitoba
- 1:17Speaker 2: Bear Hunt and Clay and Bear's Alaskan Bear Hunt and
- 1:24Speaker 2: Utah mountainon Utah Mountain Lion with Clay where they treat
- 1:28Speaker 2: a bunch of mountain lions. Today, I'm joined by Corey
- 1:35Speaker 2: Culkins Calkins, I always forget when I read it, I
- 1:41Speaker 2: know it's Caulkins and Fill the Engineer to answer your
- 1:44Speaker 2: questions about my combined rifle and archery caribou Hunt. Thank
- 1:48Speaker 2: you to everyone who wrote in or posted questions on
- 1:51Speaker 2: YouTube and social media to give us something to work off.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Here the great current Schneider is also in the house.
- 2:00Speaker 2: She says she's gonna not say anything. We'll see what happens. Karinn.
- 2:03Speaker 2: You need to weigh in. If there's something that really
- 2:05Speaker 2: is pressing. You have a question about something, Well, now
- 2:08Speaker 2: there's no avoiding it. Phil, I sent you a message
- 2:11Speaker 2: late last night to have a question too, so that
- 2:14Speaker 2: you're more of a part of it. Oh, that was
- 2:16Speaker 2: very kind of you, But you have a chance. I
- 2:18Speaker 2: didn't have a chance to watch it at ten o'clock PM,
- 2:20Speaker 2: and then you didn't get up it fo to watch it. Yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 2: I have a gun, all right, Right off the bat,
- 2:28Speaker 2: I want to clarify something that Steve has been giving
- 2:32Speaker 2: me shit about. Not just me, it gives the whole
- 2:34Speaker 2: world shit about this. I told him I was taking
- 2:37Speaker 2: my boat and my rifle on this trip, and he
- 2:39Speaker 2: assumed I'd be bowl hunting while carrying my rifle as
- 2:42Speaker 2: a backup in case I couldn't get the job done
- 2:45Speaker 2: with my archery equipment. Not the case. My plan was
- 2:48Speaker 2: always to rifle hunt, first, get some meat hanging, and
- 2:53Speaker 2: then focus on killing one with the boat that way,
- 2:56Speaker 2: you know, you did what I wouldn't have that, you know,
- 2:59Speaker 2: hanging in it in the back of my mind as
- 3:01Speaker 2: I'm trying to bowhunt, being like, oh, I should just
- 3:04Speaker 2: like quit this and get my rifle out and shoot
- 3:06Speaker 2: one of these things at two hundred yards. I brought
- 3:10Speaker 2: up with Steve yesterday in the regular podcast, and even
- 3:13Speaker 2: even though I explained to him my new thinking, it
- 3:15Speaker 2: still wasn't enough for him. Although I don't think he
- 3:18Speaker 2: actually in the moment yesterday he like thought through what
- 3:22Speaker 2: I presented to him. But we'll give him. We'll give
- 3:26Speaker 2: him a while, maybe he'll come around to it. Uh. Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 2: So anyway, I was in Manitoba with some Mong Yang
- 3:33Speaker 2: of Somemung Outdoors and Craig McCarthy of North Mountain Adventures
- 3:36Speaker 2: and we had a great time.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Well, the video clip we opened up with there, and
- 3:42Speaker 3: if you're only listening, go to your YouTube channel and
- 3:45Speaker 3: watch this podcast. It gives us a minor glimpse of
- 3:49Speaker 3: how wild and pristine that part of the world looked.
- 3:53Speaker 3: You also described how the area is largely untouched by people.
- 3:57Speaker 3: How did this factor of virgin caribou set the grounds
- 4:01Speaker 3: for the kind of hunt you'd have.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I don't know if I exactly understand your question there, Corey.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I did want to touch on though, in that opening bit,
- 4:12Speaker 2: how we're talking about how like a white tail deer
- 4:15Speaker 2: would never do this, or an elk bull elk would
- 4:18Speaker 2: never do this. What had happened is that we were
- 4:21Speaker 2: like this was after some long had shot his bowl
- 4:25Speaker 2: with the or shot that bowl with the arrow, and
- 4:28Speaker 2: then like we're standing around, you know, doing our thing,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and then literally like half an hour later, a more
- 4:33Speaker 2: caribou just across the pond like just start walking and
- 4:36Speaker 2: feeding by, and they're like looking over at us, like
- 4:39Speaker 2: they can see us. We're not hiding, but they're just
- 4:42Speaker 2: like going about their business, you know, acting pretty tame. Yeah, totally,
- 4:45Speaker 2: we're just like unpressured animals. I later found out well
- 4:50Speaker 2: while we were there that there this place isn't quite
- 4:53Speaker 2: as unpressured maybe as some of the places that we've
- 4:55Speaker 2: hunted in Alaska. That Alaska is a little bit more
- 4:59Speaker 2: remote because I think there's more mountains that are harder
- 5:03Speaker 2: to get across with different you know whatever types of
- 5:08Speaker 2: you know, vehicles. So we've always done fly in hunts
- 5:12Speaker 2: and it's just like it's rough enough country where you
- 5:14Speaker 2: can't snowmobile into it, you can't whatever. In Manitoba and
- 5:18Speaker 2: Northern Manitoba, the locals, the indigenous have like special tags
- 5:25Speaker 2: right that they can hunt these caribou herds pretty much
- 5:28Speaker 2: all winter from I understood, So once the snow comes,
- 5:31Speaker 2: like they hunt them on snowmobile. So they're definitely a
- 5:35Speaker 2: little more pressured. What we realized too with these caribou,
- 5:38Speaker 2: we were hunting them mostly on foot. One time we
- 5:41Speaker 2: got in a boat and when they hear an engine
- 5:44Speaker 2: on a lake, they're out really Oh yeah, they know
- 5:48Speaker 2: what that means. They like hear that little skiff engine
- 5:51Speaker 2: coming and they know that there's hunters coming that are
- 5:54Speaker 2: probably gonna make loud noises.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Yeah, reminds them of that snowmobile engine too.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Yeah maybe, But like think about it, that's how you
- 6:01Speaker 2: access this Caribou country. You land on a lake, you
- 6:04Speaker 2: drive around a boat on a lake. And for a
- 6:06Speaker 2: lot of people that don't have the physical capability just
- 6:08Speaker 2: to hike, you know, ten miles a day on tundra, like,
- 6:11Speaker 2: the way to get close to Cariboo is going to
- 6:13Speaker 2: be to see one that's like getting pinched by a
- 6:16Speaker 2: lake somehow, and then you know, motorboat over there, pop
- 6:20Speaker 2: out of the boat and then hopefully get a shot. Cool.
- 6:24Speaker 2: But yeah, I wanted to do this hunt because when
- 6:26Speaker 2: we were down there for our a year ago. When
- 6:29Speaker 2: I was down there black bear hunting, Craig was talking
- 6:32Speaker 2: about possibly getting into caribou hunting and he had this
- 6:36Speaker 2: camp that he wanted to check out he had never
- 6:38Speaker 2: been to, and he's looking for like a group of
- 6:40Speaker 2: guys that was sort of do an exploratory trip. And
- 6:44Speaker 2: as soon as I heard exploratory trip, I'm like, man,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I'm all over that. Like that sounds like a good
- 6:49Speaker 2: time going into the unknown. Yeah, you know, I mean
- 6:53Speaker 2: stuff's always unknown for me going to there someplace the
- 6:56Speaker 2: first time. But when everybody there is on kind of
- 6:59Speaker 2: the never seen this place with four program, it just
- 7:02Speaker 2: makes it more fun.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Yeah, more wild, more adventure. That's cool.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Well.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Our first submitted question comes from at hunter shut. He asked,
- 7:10Speaker 3: did you see any bears and where there's supposed to
- 7:13Speaker 3: be any in the area. He gave it a Google
- 7:15Speaker 3: search and learned that that far north in Manitoba has
- 7:19Speaker 3: polar black and grizzly bears.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Totally.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Did you see any bear?
- 7:22Speaker 2: We didn't see a single bear, but the pilots that
- 7:28Speaker 2: we talked to were like, oh yeah, sometimes we just
- 7:31Speaker 2: instead of going straight down to Churchill, we'll fly over
- 7:34Speaker 2: to the coast of Hudson Bay and then fly south
- 7:37Speaker 2: and it adds like, you know, thirty minutes to the
- 7:39Speaker 2: fly or whatever. And they're like, it's nothing to see,
- 7:41Speaker 2: you know, two three half dozen polar bears walking around. Wow,
- 7:45Speaker 2: So like we're far enough away from the water that
- 7:48Speaker 2: we're probably not going to see a polar bear. But
- 7:50Speaker 2: had we seen one, no one's gonna be like, oh
- 7:52Speaker 2: my god, that's amazing. They'd be like, sure they come
- 7:55Speaker 2: through there. Yeah, so yeah, they're around when we put
- 7:59Speaker 2: I posted a video on my Instagram of when we
- 8:01Speaker 2: closed up that shack. You literally cover the place and
- 8:08Speaker 2: boards that have nails screwed or hammered all the way
- 8:13Speaker 2: through them. Like you basically just take a piece of plywood,
- 8:15Speaker 2: fill it full of nails or sticking out the far side,
- 8:18Speaker 2: and then put it on the windows on the deck
- 8:22Speaker 2: like anywhere bear could try to like pry something to
- 8:24Speaker 2: get through, Like you literally cover it in in you know,
- 8:29Speaker 2: you fortify it's good to make it into a fortress.
- 8:31Speaker 2: And a lot of people commented, like, all you guys
- 8:34Speaker 2: are just leaving too much food in there. The stink
- 8:37Speaker 2: of you know, food, It's like you're in there, living
- 8:40Speaker 2: in there, You're you're cooking in there. You can't get
- 8:43Speaker 2: rid of that smell. I don't care if you had
- 8:45Speaker 2: a whole fifty five gallon drum of bacon soda, it's
- 8:48Speaker 2: not going to get rid of all the human smell. Yeah,
- 8:51Speaker 2: And bears are curious. They're gonna want to get in there.
- 8:53Speaker 2: When you're in that kind of remote place, The same
- 8:55Speaker 2: thing happens in all remote places where bears are like,
- 8:58Speaker 2: you have to protect your old things because they will
- 9:01Speaker 2: just shraddle, you know, and they'll get inside and then
- 9:03Speaker 2: just make a giant mess.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Yeah, like you said, beyond just the smell of food
- 9:07Speaker 3: and caribou meat and blood, that they're just curious. They'd
- 9:10Speaker 3: love to get into stuff.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I think that's the Yeah. I mean that's
- 9:14Speaker 2: just a super small fact factor of like why they're
- 9:17Speaker 2: getting in there would be like the dead meat smell
- 9:20Speaker 2: around there. Yep.
- 9:21Speaker 3: All right, next topic, a lot of folks asked about
- 9:25Speaker 3: how to plan their own caribou hunt. If you need
- 9:28Speaker 3: to apply for tags as a non Canadian, do you
- 9:30Speaker 3: need to use a guide or an outfitter, et cetera.
- 9:34Speaker 3: I won't read the individual questions, but can you address
- 9:36Speaker 3: the tag system for Cariboo in Canada and can you
- 9:39Speaker 3: do it yourself or do you need a guide as
- 9:42Speaker 3: a non resident?
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I've only hunted, trying to think now hunted BC
- 9:48Speaker 2: and I personally haven't hunted. It was when Steve hunted
- 9:50Speaker 2: and Cal hunted and I was just there as part
- 9:53Speaker 2: of the crew, and then I'm hunted Manitoba twice now.
- 9:56Speaker 2: And I believe that across Canada there is no d
- 10:01Speaker 2: option like you're gonna as a non resident. For residents,
- 10:05Speaker 2: sure have at it, but as a non resident, you're
- 10:08Speaker 2: gonna have to go through an outfitter. And basically the
- 10:11Speaker 2: outfitters have like these zones concessions they call them, and
- 10:17Speaker 2: there are allotted so many tags in their concession and
- 10:21Speaker 2: then they can do what they want with them and
- 10:23Speaker 2: sell them to whoever. There is a limit though, like
- 10:26Speaker 2: for let's just say Craig had I don't know fifty
- 10:29Speaker 2: Caribou tags for that concession up there, even though he
- 10:33Speaker 2: has fifty. If it's just you and I for the
- 10:37Speaker 2: entire season, and we paid him as much money as
- 10:38Speaker 2: he needed to be happy. You and I couldn't each
- 10:41Speaker 2: kill twenty five. We're still limited by the government to two. Gotcha, Craig,
- 10:49Speaker 2: this year is charging Sorry, if you're gonna book, it'd
- 10:53Speaker 2: be next year. So it's gonna be fourteen thousand dollars
- 10:58Speaker 2: for one caribou and twenty five hundred dollars if you
- 11:01Speaker 2: want to shoot a second one. I honestly don't think
- 11:04Speaker 2: it worked out good for us, because we again wanted
- 11:07Speaker 2: to get some meat and then we wanted to have
- 11:10Speaker 2: fun bow hunting. But like, I really don't feel like
- 11:12Speaker 2: you need to go on this trip thinking you need
- 11:13Speaker 2: to kill two animals. I think caribou hunting is kind
- 11:15Speaker 2: of sometimes had that I don't know, just like you
- 11:21Speaker 2: know you're gonna hopefully go see a bunch of animals,
- 11:24Speaker 2: and like you hate to like kill one the first
- 11:26Speaker 2: day and then you don't have anything else to hunt
- 11:28Speaker 2: for the rest of the time you're there. But like, honestly,
- 11:32Speaker 2: now that I've done it, a bunch like one tag
- 11:34Speaker 2: is plenty. Really it's like if you yeah, sure, if
- 11:37Speaker 2: you are trigger happy, you're just gonna have to really
- 11:40Speaker 2: control yourself or have a good wing man that can
- 11:42Speaker 2: be like, no, it's not the one you want to shoot, Corey.
- 11:44Speaker 2: There's a bigger ones out there. Let's wait, you know.
- 11:48Speaker 2: But anyways, uh yeah, so if you're gonna do it
- 11:50Speaker 2: in Canada, you're gonna have to go through an outfitter
- 11:53Speaker 2: find them. These pricers are definitely still well, it's cheaper
- 11:58Speaker 2: for a guided hunt. I still I think in Canada
- 12:00Speaker 2: then in uh Alaska for a guided caribou hunt. But
- 12:04Speaker 2: in Alaska you can still do d I Y because
- 12:06Speaker 2: cariboo is one of the species that in Alaska you
- 12:08Speaker 2: don't have to have a guide for. And so you know,
- 12:12Speaker 2: I'm guessing if you just go with a transporter, you know,
- 12:16Speaker 2: you can probably still do a caribou hunt for five
- 12:19Speaker 2: to eight d I Y style, you know, counting everything. Obviously,
- 12:24Speaker 2: you'd have to buy a tag in Alaska. But if
- 12:26Speaker 2: you're gonna do Canada, like you just got a book
- 12:28Speaker 2: with the outfitter, he's gonna there, he or she they're
- 12:32Speaker 2: gonna have the tags for you covered.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah, make a more streamline more enjoyable too.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Going with an outfitter, well, I mean, it just depends
- 12:39Speaker 2: on what you want to do. Yeah, you know, I
- 12:41Speaker 2: think for there are a lot of us that like
- 12:45Speaker 2: the reason I did that with Craig is because one
- 12:48Speaker 2: you had to but like it's sounded like a good
- 12:50Speaker 2: sounded like an adventure, you know. Had he been like, oh, yeah,
- 12:54Speaker 2: I also have this caribou hunt that I've been doing
- 12:56Speaker 2: for ten years. We go to this lake You're gonna
- 12:59Speaker 2: catch up on of fish, and it kind of told
- 13:01Speaker 2: me what's going to happen. Maybe I wouldn't be so interested,
- 13:05Speaker 2: you know, true, But I think a lot of people
- 13:08Speaker 2: like the you know, the possibility of going on to
- 13:10Speaker 2: diy adventure because it just does add adventure. You know,
- 13:14Speaker 2: you don't know the outcome where when you go outfitted.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I don't want to say you're guaranteed, but you know.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Yeah, get to look at a brochure and see the
- 13:22Speaker 3: terrain and potentially the animals yep, both sides less unknown.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Yep.
- 13:29Speaker 3: It was interesting watching you guys spot caribou, which didn't
- 13:32Speaker 3: seem too difficult to find caribou nope.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Uh.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Then to watch you guys strategize how to stalk and
- 13:38Speaker 3: close the distance in that terrain in the tundra and
- 13:42Speaker 3: decide when and if it was worth pursuing those cariboos
- 13:45Speaker 3: you saw. Uh, here's a clip from Phil There's some
- 13:48Speaker 3: caribou right.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Over there, right to the left of that.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, I see it.
- 13:52Speaker 5: There's a whole hurd.
- 13:55Speaker 2: On two three, four, five six seven.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Man, that's the longest it's ever taken me to spot
- 14:02Speaker 6: an animal.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Yeah. So you can see we're looking at carib in
- 14:08Speaker 2: the distance. You can every direction we look or the
- 14:10Speaker 2: camera looks, you can see there's water around, and so
- 14:14Speaker 2: you can you can never really walk in a straight
- 14:16Speaker 2: line to the animals that you're seeing. And I think
- 14:20Speaker 2: this is this is just what we were calling day
- 14:22Speaker 2: zero is. I'd say, let's go, but I mean we
- 14:26Speaker 2: had to like swim a couple of lakes to get
- 14:28Speaker 2: to them. Yeah, well, I think we can go right
- 14:30Speaker 2: through the middle here to get around it. But don't
- 14:34Speaker 2: you think, I mean that's like an hour? Yeah, I
- 14:38Speaker 2: think right, probably, we hadn't. Well, we're still watching crack
- 14:46Speaker 2: and I are debating how far we want to walk here.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Does this one keep going for a while? That's over all? Right? So, yeah,
- 14:56Speaker 2: like there are tons of comes in many different forms.
- 15:00Speaker 2: This one didn't have the dreaded tussocks that can be
- 15:04Speaker 2: so just tiring that the spongy bottom. No, it's the
- 15:11Speaker 2: tussic is the best way I heard someone describe it.
- 15:13Speaker 2: It's like taking a like a three quarters inflated volleyball,
- 15:18Speaker 2: tethering it to the ground, and you grow some grass
- 15:21Speaker 2: on top of it, and they're just perfectly spaced where
- 15:25Speaker 2: like you can never decide if you're going to step
- 15:27Speaker 2: on top of it and possibly have it move a
- 15:29Speaker 2: little bit or step between them, and it's just it
- 15:33Speaker 2: just wears your butt out. Like we once we're on
- 15:35Speaker 2: a hunt with Steve and Brent and we were going
- 15:39Speaker 2: to another We're just going to another glass and knob
- 15:42Speaker 2: that was in the distance, just because we want to
- 15:44Speaker 2: see some new country. And we got halfway there on
- 15:46Speaker 2: the tussocks when the whole crew was like mutin need,
- 15:50Speaker 2: we just quit. We said we're going back to our
- 15:51Speaker 2: original one because no one wanted just to do tussics
- 15:54Speaker 2: for the next hour or whatever it was.
- 15:56Speaker 3: You know, And what boots are you wearing?
- 15:58Speaker 2: Are you in like muck boots most of the time, Well,
- 16:01Speaker 2: it just depends on how wet it is. I brought
- 16:05Speaker 2: both on this trip. It looked like, yeah, but I
- 16:09Speaker 2: ended up wearing the hiking boots more because again, this stuff,
- 16:14Speaker 2: when we first were looking at it, I thought, Man,
- 16:16Speaker 2: it's gonna take a long time to cover the country.
- 16:19Speaker 2: It didn't end up being quite so bad, So we
- 16:21Speaker 2: actually ended up some of that stuff that originally we
- 16:23Speaker 2: thought might be too far for, like, you know, a
- 16:26Speaker 2: poke didn't end up being that bad. But we were
- 16:29Speaker 2: easily going like two miles one direction. Like for a stalk,
- 16:35Speaker 2: it's tricky. It's also pretty flat out there, and so
- 16:38Speaker 2: you're always just trying to find some sort of terrain undulation,
- 16:41Speaker 2: you know, to get between you and the animals to
- 16:45Speaker 2: you know, to hija so you can close a distance.
- 16:48Speaker 3: And you mentioned all the water. You guys had a boat,
- 16:51Speaker 3: but the water was probably not all connected exactly. I
- 16:54Speaker 3: had to pick a route around it.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, Now, the one I ended up killing with
- 16:57Speaker 2: my boat, that one, it was close enough to our
- 17:01Speaker 2: lake that it made sense to get in the boat
- 17:03Speaker 2: motor up to the end of the lake and then
- 17:05Speaker 2: get out and stock from there.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Nice make for an easier pack out too. Oh yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 3: here's more of that strategizing on the spot and stalk
- 17:14Speaker 3: from Simong's rifle hunt. It also seems like you guys
- 17:17Speaker 3: really have been seeing tons of caribou at this point.
- 17:22Speaker 2: The caribou race is on. Maybe if we get along
- 17:27Speaker 2: that shoreline, we'll get some cover.
- 17:38Speaker 3: So this is still day zero you're calling it, right, Yeah,
- 17:45Speaker 3: day zero.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I saw another one that was still quite a way.
- 17:51Speaker 2: And what happens often with caribou is that like from
- 17:54Speaker 2: the knob you're sitting on it, first, you can't see
- 17:56Speaker 2: them all. You think you can, but the little folds
- 18:00Speaker 2: increases just hide animals, and so you start moving towards
- 18:03Speaker 2: one group and then like a different group pops up,
- 18:05Speaker 2: which is what these are. So we're like, you know,
- 18:08Speaker 2: just running into other caribou and.
- 18:12Speaker 1: They're youngsters and they're very curious.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Yeah, these younger animals that haven't been on the landscape
- 18:18Speaker 2: as long, they maybe haven't seen people. And so a
- 18:20Speaker 2: lot of times when they see you, especially when you
- 18:22Speaker 2: just duck down and kind of get lull, they're like, oh,
- 18:25Speaker 2: what's that actually come towards you. Yeah, they're coming this way. Yeah,
- 18:37Speaker 2: whenever you I think we can cover off on some
- 18:40Speaker 2: of the gear questions to uh, A bunch of people
- 18:42Speaker 2: actively asked about the binoculars I was using, the sig
- 18:47Speaker 2: Zulu six. Is the image stabilized, which for hunts like these,
- 18:52Speaker 2: these fourth from the front, when you don't need to
- 18:55Speaker 2: know exactly, like you're not counting inches. You just need
- 18:59Speaker 2: to know if it's like a bowl or a cow,
- 19:01Speaker 2: or if it's a caribou or a rock. It's hard
- 19:05Speaker 2: to be hard to beat those.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Now, how close were you guys able to get on
- 19:13Speaker 3: Smong's caribou?
- 19:14Speaker 2: Man, It's it wasn't far. A couple hundred yards beautiful. Yeah,
- 19:19Speaker 2: I remember I kept he was dialing, he was using
- 19:23Speaker 2: my rifle, and I kept having to retoel in the
- 19:26Speaker 2: distance and he kept having to back it down. The
- 19:30Speaker 2: bipod a lot of people asked about too. That's the
- 19:33Speaker 2: MDT triple pull, which is it's kind of a mega bipod.
- 19:38Speaker 2: You've used one too, I'm sure.
- 19:39Speaker 3: I've shot off one.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Yep. Yeah. It's great for what I would consider like
- 19:44Speaker 2: front country or country where I really know that there's
- 19:49Speaker 2: not going to be anybody to get prone because the
- 19:53Speaker 2: brush is going to be tooth thick and tall, you know,
- 19:56Speaker 2: and there's not going to be other things to lay
- 19:58Speaker 2: on to just give you the you know, a prone
- 20:00Speaker 2: position or anything else to rest on, and like Tundra's classic,
- 20:05Speaker 2: like just brush country, right, And so having a super
- 20:08Speaker 2: tall bipod like that it allows you to you know,
- 20:12Speaker 2: shoot from anywhere and you're getting a really stable position.
- 20:15Speaker 2: You know, you can shoot from your knees, you can
- 20:17Speaker 2: shoot from your butt, I mean, and obviously if you want,
- 20:20Speaker 2: you can get low enough to shoot prone too with
- 20:22Speaker 2: that bipod. But it's heavy, and I'm not going to
- 20:25Speaker 2: carry in a backpack overnight. But like with my kids
- 20:29Speaker 2: on a front country hunt, I'm always carrying that thing. Yeah.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Good stability.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Yeah, as you can see there too. Some monk's first
- 20:39Speaker 2: caribou meant a lot to him. I was happy for him,
- 20:42Speaker 2: and I was excited about him cooking a meal for us.
- 20:46Speaker 2: In all the years of meat Eater shows and books,
- 20:49Speaker 2: we never cooked stomach or tripe, and we finally did
- 20:52Speaker 2: it in Manitoba and it was great. Here's another clip oh.
- 20:56Speaker 6: With that though, yes, I do need to keep the stomach,
- 21:00Speaker 6: so gut the malu you would, But once you get
- 21:02Speaker 6: the stomach out, oh man.
- 21:05Speaker 2: He's going next level.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Craig is like, wait, what stomach?
- 21:08Speaker 6: You said?
- 21:08Speaker 2: Traditional so I'm like, that's the most somong hadn't told
- 21:12Speaker 2: us what he was gonna make.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Okay, surprise generic.
- 21:14Speaker 6: Then you might think it's a stew, but when it
- 21:18Speaker 6: comes to this stuff, it's their stew.
- 21:20Speaker 3: But you just throw the stomach.
- 21:21Speaker 6: Lying into it. Try I'll clean the stomach, and we
- 21:25Speaker 6: just only eat the stomach. We're not gonna eat the
- 21:27Speaker 6: stomach contents. Normally, if you want to, like you would
- 21:31Speaker 6: pack the stomach, you packed liver, you would take this
- 21:33Speaker 6: basically take this whole thing. Yeah, you would just obviously
- 21:36Speaker 6: dump the contents. Now, normally i would try to keep
- 21:39Speaker 6: the stomachs organized. I'm assuming a car is like a
- 21:41Speaker 6: deer where they have four stuff.
- 21:42Speaker 2: If you're just listening, some's over the gut pile explaining
- 21:45Speaker 2: this to Craig four different starts.
- 21:47Speaker 6: Yeah, so if you really want to be technical about it,
- 21:51Speaker 6: you you separate all four stomachs to me, a stomach
- 21:54Speaker 6: of the stomach, I don't really care.
- 21:55Speaker 3: And they taste the same, I don't know a difference.
- 21:57Speaker 6: Yeah, So with this one, because I'm only take just
- 22:00Speaker 6: a little bit just for us to eat, I'm basically
- 22:03Speaker 6: just gonna start here, just somewhere here so that I
- 22:05Speaker 6: don't take anything else. Then I'm just gonna take a
- 22:08Speaker 6: little bit of a lining. So this one's already coming
- 22:10Speaker 6: off pretty easy. I use a completely different knife for
- 22:13Speaker 6: this situation, which is why I'm using mind and I'm
- 22:15Speaker 6: not letting you use yours.
- 22:17Speaker 3: So basically this is it.
- 22:18Speaker 6: You would take the stomach, and I've never done with caribou,
- 22:21Speaker 6: so I'm actually curious to see how this goes. Now,
- 22:23Speaker 6: you would just take this and just wipe off as
- 22:26Speaker 6: much as you can. But you can see how this
- 22:29Speaker 6: caribou stomach is really really soft. I just did that
- 22:32Speaker 6: and it comes off with a deer. Now it's a
- 22:33Speaker 6: little bit more hearty. Yeah, So clean this out, rinse
- 22:36Speaker 6: it out, and then when you boil it, you boil
- 22:39Speaker 6: it by itself, just pure water, and this top membrane
- 22:41Speaker 6: right here will just peel off, and then you have
- 22:43Speaker 6: the white actual like stripe in the bottom right. And
- 22:46Speaker 6: then once you'll clean at wash it again.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Then you can just.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Throw in your soup.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Throw it in your soup, Throw in your soup.
- 22:52Speaker 2: That's it. Some mongs now rinsing the uh stomach lining
- 23:08Speaker 2: in the lake, and then he just dropped it into
- 23:10Speaker 2: a pot of boiling water. Now he's prepping some vegetables
- 23:15Speaker 2: for the actual soup.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And did I hear he rinses and repeats numerous Yeah.
- 23:21Speaker 2: With the boiling part, you uh you kind yeah, you
- 23:25Speaker 2: kind of you're boiling the the green kind of out
- 23:28Speaker 2: of it and then replacing, replacing the water and going again.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Quiet process. I don't think it really took that long. No, Okay,
- 23:39Speaker 2: looks like it looks different, but honestly, it's it's like
- 23:43Speaker 2: flavorless all. It is like a it's just a texture.
- 23:46Speaker 2: This is like a weird you know texture. It looks
- 23:52Speaker 2: just like moral mushrooms. Yeah, definitely does have a morel
- 23:55Speaker 2: mushroom look to it.
- 23:56Speaker 6: So do I rice it with the tripe or just
- 23:58Speaker 6: try everything in one bite?
- 24:04Speaker 2: I'm a fan. It's good. Yeah. It just tastes like
- 24:08Speaker 2: the It tastes like the bone broth. It's just a texture, really.
- 24:13Speaker 3: That's what it is. I mean, it literally is just broth.
- 24:17Speaker 6: It's just a lot of times the flavor will favor
- 24:20Speaker 6: whatever meat you're thrown in there. That's what we call it.
- 24:22Speaker 6: Deer stew elks do whatever it is, because that usually
- 24:25Speaker 6: drives the actual flavor of the broth meat. It's hard
- 24:27Speaker 6: to come by it in laos way back then and
- 24:30Speaker 6: even today. Sure, And so if you kill an animal
- 24:33Speaker 6: when you're trying to feed a village or in this case,
- 24:35Speaker 6: your seven kids, which was very common to have multiple
- 24:38Speaker 6: kids back then, one piece of steak isn't going to.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Feed a whole village or a whole family.
- 24:43Speaker 6: So the best way to distribute the amount of quantity
- 24:46Speaker 6: of the food that you might have is just stew.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Okay. A couple questions came in around the flavor of cariboo,
- 24:54Speaker 2: Like somebody asked if it tasted Manitoba caribou tastes different
- 24:57Speaker 2: than the lasting cariboo. I don't think so. They all
- 25:00Speaker 2: eat liking so they taste the same as far as
- 25:04Speaker 2: I know, I don't have that. I guess discerning or
- 25:09Speaker 2: a high level palette. Cabu meat is extremely lean, and
- 25:17Speaker 2: everybody's like, oh, well, deer's lean. This is even leaner,
- 25:20Speaker 2: like they'll say out there. To survive the winner, you
- 25:23Speaker 2: can't just have caribou meat. You have to have the
- 25:26Speaker 2: salmon to have the fat, you'll die. So yeah, super lean.
- 25:33Speaker 2: I don't know, very very venison, Like, I don't know
- 25:36Speaker 2: if it has. If there was a lineup of you know, elk,
- 25:40Speaker 2: deer and caribou backstraps, I don't know if I could
- 25:43Speaker 2: really pick them out this on flavor. I'd pick them
- 25:46Speaker 2: out more on chewiness, because I always think the elk
- 25:51Speaker 2: are more chewy than the other ones. Clarification too, some
- 25:56Speaker 2: long said four stomachs. The stomach actually has once with
- 26:00Speaker 2: four sacks in it, you know, like four compartments that
- 26:03Speaker 2: sort of do the business of of what's the word,
- 26:10Speaker 2: caren digestion thanks, like all ruminants. Yeah, and Corey asks,
- 26:18Speaker 2: how was the tongue? No boil? It was great? Yeah,
- 26:22Speaker 2: look good, just like Randy Brown said. So we had
- 26:25Speaker 2: him on, which I think are some great episodes, although
- 26:28Speaker 2: I feel like Steve missed a whole bunch of questions
- 26:30Speaker 2: when we had him back. I wish I had been
- 26:32Speaker 2: in there for that about living in the bush in Alaska.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Great episodes. But he told us that like caribou tongue
- 26:40Speaker 2: was a real delicacy and like you could eat it immediately,
- 26:43Speaker 2: like no slow and low prep needed for it. And
- 26:48Speaker 2: so we gave it a shot, like just washed it,
- 26:50Speaker 2: basically sliced it up. I don't know half inch. I
- 26:54Speaker 2: maybe could have done the slices a little bit thinner,
- 26:57Speaker 2: but again I didn't mind it. And then we just
- 26:58Speaker 2: fried him up in a pan with some It was good.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Did you peel?
- 27:02Speaker 2: No, there's no peeling. Okay, ate it all up. It
- 27:06Speaker 2: just wasn't like it must have something to do with
- 27:09Speaker 2: their diet, right that they're just eating the liking and
- 27:11Speaker 2: they don't have to. They're not like browsing as much
- 27:14Speaker 2: as moose or or elk. I guess yeah, or elk
- 27:18Speaker 2: don't really browse with deer, and maybe that's why it
- 27:21Speaker 2: makes it the whole thing more tender. But no, it
- 27:24Speaker 2: was good. I would do the same thing again.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Well, good work, tongue to stomach, eat it all.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Why not.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Let's see, We're gonna show some of the footage from
- 27:34Speaker 3: Yanni's rifle stock. It almost looks too easy real quick, though,
- 27:39Speaker 3: someone wants to know what about your rifle rifle and
- 27:42Speaker 3: the caliber setup that you guys were using.
- 27:44Speaker 2: That was the sig Cross. It had a proof barrel
- 27:48Speaker 2: on it, which is kind of custom. I got it
- 27:50Speaker 2: done super short. I think it's like an eighteen inch
- 27:53Speaker 2: er because I like to run the suppressor on it.
- 27:56Speaker 2: And we can't. We couldn't use suppressors in Canada, so
- 27:58Speaker 2: I'll just have the break on it. But the caliber
- 28:02Speaker 2: was six point five PRC. And yeah, it was great
- 28:08Speaker 2: for this. You know. I was expecting a longer shot,
- 28:11Speaker 2: but I ended up getting a shot so close I
- 28:14Speaker 2: was wishing I had my bow with me at the moment. Yeah.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Well, let's see that clip, Phil.
- 28:19Speaker 6: They're they're walking literally towards us.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Yeah, So we're packing out some Mung's bowl on our
- 28:27Speaker 2: backs right now, going back towards camp, and all of
- 28:30Speaker 2: a sudden, these bulls just show up and they're like,
- 28:33Speaker 2: we got the wind in our face and they're coming
- 28:35Speaker 2: at us. And I was kind of almost like, eh,
- 28:39Speaker 2: let's just like let him be. Let's go back to
- 28:42Speaker 2: camp and we'll, you know, deal with some mongs meet
- 28:44Speaker 2: and we'll reassess. And then I started looking at the bulls.
- 28:47Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, A couple of them are pretty nice,
- 28:50Speaker 2: you know. And then I thought, yeah, if I get
- 28:52Speaker 2: one killed now, I'll get more time with my bow.
- 28:54Speaker 2: So yeah, we got in ahead of them. And it's
- 29:00Speaker 2: funny too, man, Like these guys are seem just oblivious
- 29:05Speaker 2: to us. Again, it's not just the three of us.
- 29:06Speaker 2: There's two camera guys there too, and we're not like
- 29:10Speaker 2: super well hit and we kind of get into this
- 29:12Speaker 2: like sparse cops of evergreens and there's some bushes around.
- 29:19Speaker 2: But like compared to some of the other caribou that
- 29:21Speaker 2: we ran into later in the week that would like,
- 29:24Speaker 2: you know, at two hundred yards see us and be boogeying,
- 29:26Speaker 2: these guys just were like no care in the world,
- 29:30Speaker 2: like not.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Walking towards you.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Not.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Like the whole time, I'm wishing. I'm like, I
- 29:35Speaker 2: wish I had my bow, wish I had.
- 29:37Speaker 3: My boat because how close is this all?
- 29:40Speaker 2: Like right now, they're maybe eighty ninety and like I think,
- 29:44Speaker 2: I find I shoot him at like I shoot him
- 29:46Speaker 2: at bow range. I forget what it was. It was
- 29:48Speaker 2: like forty yards or something that's increasing, maybe fifty yards,
- 29:58Speaker 2: and you can see I shoot a hard, hard horned one,
- 30:01Speaker 2: so long shot one that has still had his velvet
- 30:03Speaker 2: on his antlers, and part of that group of bulls
- 30:05Speaker 2: also still had velvet antlers. Are you kidding? The uh
- 30:11Speaker 2: the velvet? Some people just get a real kick out
- 30:14Speaker 2: of velvet antlers. For whatever reason. I don't find them
- 30:17Speaker 2: sexy appealing at all. We've all the caribou hunts I've
- 30:22Speaker 2: ever been on, if they had velvet on them, we
- 30:24Speaker 2: would peel it. It's hard to preserve it in the field.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Like if you want it, you know, for your mount
- 30:32Speaker 2: at home, you got to like take real good care
- 30:34Speaker 2: of it. And if it's early in the haunt, it's
- 30:37Speaker 2: going to be warm, the flies get to it and
- 30:39Speaker 2: they start laying eggs in it. You end up with
- 30:41Speaker 2: maggots in the velvet and it can just be a mess.
- 30:45Speaker 2: And it looked like you were late enough in to
- 30:47Speaker 2: hear what were you there in August? I think it
- 30:50Speaker 2: was September.
- 30:50Speaker 3: September that they were about to lose their velvet. Anyway,
- 30:53Speaker 3: obviously that one you shot at our.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean both both the ones I shot were
- 30:57Speaker 2: hard horned, so yeah, they were just like they were
- 30:59Speaker 2: in the process.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Bound to come off soon.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Anyway. I think the bigger ones had maybe do it
- 31:04Speaker 2: a little bit earlier, because it seemed like the smaller,
- 31:06Speaker 2: younger bulls had more of velvet.
- 31:08Speaker 3: So well, you mentioned in that clip that that was
- 31:11Speaker 3: a first for you to shoot an animal while packing
- 31:14Speaker 3: out another one.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Yeah, have you ever done that? Twice? Oh?
- 31:19Speaker 3: Annealo punting. Oh, I could see and was had it
- 31:23Speaker 3: on my backpack and was walking out and I had
- 31:25Speaker 3: a dough tag with me and shot a dough really
- 31:27Speaker 3: close to the truck, which was great opening day, you know,
- 31:29Speaker 3: they're all running around like crazy. And then another time
- 31:32Speaker 3: was just on a cow hunt on a ranch I
- 31:34Speaker 3: used to work at. Shot the cow was actually just
- 31:36Speaker 3: dragging it down to the truck, and more elk came
- 31:39Speaker 3: over and a buddy was able to fill his elk tag,
- 31:41Speaker 3: so so it wasn't quite packing it out but dragging
- 31:46Speaker 3: it out. Yeah, it happens.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Totally rare though. Yeah, yeah, pretty cool. We again, I'm
- 31:52Speaker 2: not going to like try to uh, you know, hide it.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Like we have five people there, and so if it's
- 31:57Speaker 2: only two of you, you might be like, let's not
- 32:00Speaker 2: shoot one because we still got to deal with this
- 32:02Speaker 2: first animal. Yeah, and then I'm gonna have to you know,
- 32:05Speaker 2: pack the other one out. But with five people, it's
- 32:07Speaker 2: like pretty easy to you know, to pack out two cariboo.
- 32:11Speaker 2: They're not giant, huge animals.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, like how how heavy was all the
- 32:16Speaker 3: meat and the antlers.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Just it's i think very similar to a mule deer yeah,
- 32:20Speaker 2: like a mature mule deer, like you know, you know,
- 32:22Speaker 2: ten to twenty percent bigger than a white tailed buck.
- 32:26Speaker 2: They're just it's I don't know what it is about
- 32:28Speaker 2: a cariboo, but even when you're glassing them and you've
- 32:30Speaker 2: seen them on the hoof, they look huge. And I
- 32:33Speaker 2: don't know if it's like the like the crazy coloration
- 32:36Speaker 2: of them compared to like our deer, or if it's
- 32:39Speaker 2: their Their antlers are obviously a lot bigger, but when
- 32:42Speaker 2: you kill one, you walk up to it, it's a
- 32:45Speaker 2: little bit like, oh, yeah, they're not that big, you know. Oh,
- 32:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Where are we at here on this script?
- 32:53Speaker 2: Uh, let's see called velvet Life on the Island. Drive said,
- 33:01Speaker 2: I wanted to know, first sighting in the wild, do
- 33:03Speaker 2: they look bigger or smaller than you expected. It's kind
- 33:06Speaker 2: of what I was just talking about. It's like when
- 33:08Speaker 2: you see them, they look huge, and you walk up
- 33:10Speaker 2: to them when they're dead and they're not quite as big.
- 33:12Speaker 2: I mean, the antlers are big, but the body itself,
- 33:15Speaker 2: like I said, is not. It's like maybe calf elk,
- 33:21Speaker 2: you know, yeah, like you're gonna probably yield. I don't know,
- 33:26Speaker 2: fifty sixty pounds seventy max off a big old giant bowl.
- 33:32Speaker 3: And you talked about velvet. Mitchell Horner asked, how come
- 33:35Speaker 3: the velvet was cleaned off when back at camp? Did
- 33:39Speaker 3: you guys clean it off that camp or out in
- 33:40Speaker 3: the field.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Just stripping camp?
- 33:42Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 33:43Speaker 2: Yeah the next day. Yeah, it comes off super easy.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Really yeah, feels off.
- 33:48Speaker 2: And the thing is, that's why I don't like shooting
- 33:49Speaker 2: them in velvet, because if you're gonna peel it off,
- 33:52Speaker 2: it doesn't have that cool coloration that a hard antlerred
- 33:55Speaker 2: one does.
- 33:55Speaker 3: Is it real bleach white under.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of like it's like bloody and bleach,
- 34:00Speaker 2: you know, and you kind of you want to make
- 34:02Speaker 2: it look brown. You got to kind of do it yourself,
- 34:04Speaker 2: and it never looks quite right. And so I must
- 34:09Speaker 2: prefer one that's you know, rubbed his blood with, you know,
- 34:14Speaker 2: the stains of bushes and dirt and all that, and just,
- 34:17Speaker 2: I don't know, looks way cooler.
- 34:20Speaker 3: Let's see. Moving on, Graham Underscore, McCutcheon asks if you
- 34:24Speaker 3: can explain how to properly age a cariboo and how
- 34:27Speaker 3: old were the cariboo you and Somemong harvested.
- 34:29Speaker 2: No idea. I guess you'd had to send a on
- 34:33Speaker 2: the hoof aging them. No idea you could send a
- 34:36Speaker 2: jaw bone in I'm sure to some biologists in Canada
- 34:41Speaker 2: and they tell you how old it is. But some
- 34:44Speaker 2: mongs is definitely on the younger side. You know, I'd
- 34:46Speaker 2: probably guess it was no more than you know, two
- 34:49Speaker 2: or three years old, and I don't know, just guess
- 34:52Speaker 2: in mind, might have been a couple of years older
- 34:54Speaker 2: than that.
- 34:56Speaker 3: I noticed in the video that mostly bowls that were
- 35:00Speaker 3: it made the film. Did you see many cows and
- 35:02Speaker 3: calves wandering around too?
- 35:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, but you know they aren't as sexy,
- 35:07Speaker 2: so the editor no, it doesn't want doesn't put them
- 35:09Speaker 2: in as much.
- 35:10Speaker 3: Cinematographers that did a beautiful job out there with you. Okay,
- 35:13Speaker 3: so you both killed caribou with your rifle. Then you
- 35:16Speaker 3: turn your focus to hunting with a bow. You got
- 35:19Speaker 3: your legs under you with more lay of the land,
- 35:21Speaker 3: and how the caribou around there were behaving. But now
- 35:24Speaker 3: you have a harder hunt in front of you in
- 35:26Speaker 3: terms of getting within bow range and trying to find
- 35:28Speaker 3: enough cover in that open country. Play the clip pill.
- 35:34Speaker 4: We have this group of bulls that we're betted, but
- 35:37Speaker 4: as we got closer, they all started getting up and
- 35:40Speaker 4: feeding around. We don't have a lot of cover, so
- 35:43Speaker 4: we decided to get into this band of trey that
- 35:45Speaker 4: kind of goes right directly towards them.
- 35:47Speaker 5: But that's probably about one hundred to one hundred fifty
- 35:51Speaker 5: yards to where the caribou are. They're not really in
- 35:54Speaker 5: a spot where we can make any media play on them,
- 35:57Speaker 5: so kind of just going with what they're giving up.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Y yep, not a lot of cover. You know, I've
- 36:16Speaker 2: learned with any of these animals, when you're bowl hunting
- 36:18Speaker 2: and you're just trying to get in tight or you're
- 36:23Speaker 2: shotgun hunting a turkey or whatever, you just like patience
- 36:26Speaker 2: pace so well because eventually, like if you're looking at
- 36:29Speaker 2: a situation and it's not in your favor, don't push it.
- 36:35Speaker 2: You just it's just sure you might pull it off,
- 36:38Speaker 2: but hopefully you have time and you can just be
- 36:40Speaker 2: patient and let the animal move into a position that's
- 36:43Speaker 2: way more favorable for you to you know, get in
- 36:46Speaker 2: get in tight on.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree, odds of letting nature do its thing
- 36:50Speaker 3: in the animal potentially getting close to you or probably
- 36:53Speaker 3: higher than you, pushing it, bumping the animals. Oh, you
- 36:55Speaker 3: never see again.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Just like stay in the vicinity, you know, shadow them,
- 36:59Speaker 2: watch and then next thing you know, there's just like
- 37:02Speaker 2: the perfect little hill and all you can see is
- 37:04Speaker 2: the top of his antlers, and you know, you just
- 37:08Speaker 2: literally walk right over to the hill and at the
- 37:10Speaker 2: end you gotta crawl maybe ten or twenty yards and
- 37:13Speaker 2: you're within range as opposed to just trying to belly
- 37:16Speaker 2: crawl across some one hundred yard open expanse. It's just
- 37:20Speaker 2: like probably not gonna work.
- 37:21Speaker 3: You know, take it away, yanni.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Oh, what's our next one?
- 37:31Speaker 3: Run into the caribou much closer than you thought. Oh,
- 37:34Speaker 3: you had to back up to make sure bulls wouldn't
- 37:36Speaker 3: see or smell you. Yeah, and then Somemong dove in
- 37:39Speaker 3: for his opportunity.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Again with caribou, man, you just can't You never
- 37:43Speaker 2: know which direction they're going. You think they're all kind
- 37:47Speaker 2: of moving south, and then they're all kind of moving
- 37:50Speaker 2: north south, and they're just all over the place, and
- 37:54Speaker 2: so you're just kind of in the zone until it
- 37:58Speaker 2: just like works out. And some was up first and
- 38:01Speaker 2: so he kind of was ahead of us, and we
- 38:04Speaker 2: actually ended up like mirroring him and then kind of
- 38:08Speaker 2: coming back together right when he was actually getting into it.
- 38:12Speaker 2: And what happened is that these bulls sort of fed
- 38:16Speaker 2: and got pushed up against this lake and I don't
- 38:18Speaker 2: and one was betted when we finally got to him.
- 38:20Speaker 2: So I don't know if they were there because the
- 38:22Speaker 2: lake had maybe reprieved from the mosquitoes because it was
- 38:25Speaker 2: like a little wind blown across it. Hard to say.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Maybe they're just there to get some water. But that edge,
- 38:31Speaker 2: you know, and having some woods nearby, allowed Semong to
- 38:35Speaker 2: get within bowl range pretty easily. Cool.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Well, here's a clip of Simong's archery stock.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Yeah, the mungs.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Hats off to maxim Eli. That's a nice shot in
- 39:02Speaker 3: that beautiful I mean, the foliage helps, but man, he
- 39:05Speaker 3: just nailed it.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Someone just drew on his knees and he stands up.
- 39:09Speaker 2: He's got the perfect cover. The both bulls have their
- 39:12Speaker 2: heads down. He takes a shot, I think he said
- 39:15Speaker 2: it was forty to forty five, runs right at him,
- 39:17Speaker 2: runs at him, and then into this shallow lake and
- 39:23Speaker 2: then out the other side.
- 39:24Speaker 3: Just did a big loop, blood pouring down the side
- 39:30Speaker 3: at least it looks it swimming through the water.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Yeap.
- 39:37Speaker 3: He gets out and looks pretty unscathed at that point
- 39:42Speaker 3: other than the hole in the.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Side of his totally Yeah. Then he's running. Yeah, this
- 39:56Speaker 2: is uh. You know, we can talk a lot about
- 39:58Speaker 2: about what happens here. You know, so long the sides.
- 40:03Speaker 5: That is not look good.
- 40:06Speaker 2: It's like a bunch of blood. But especially when you
- 40:08Speaker 2: see that shot right there, you're like, oh my god,
- 40:11Speaker 2: his side is both sides are literally painted. I think
- 40:15Speaker 2: a lot of that the reason that it got so painted.
- 40:18Speaker 2: The water helped with that, right It sort of lubricated
- 40:21Speaker 2: the fur, lubricated the side. Like I don't know what
- 40:23Speaker 2: it would have looked like had that not happened, but
- 40:25Speaker 2: I don't think it quite would have been that dramatic.
- 40:28Speaker 2: But it's very clear to see anybody that's you know,
- 40:32Speaker 2: hunted long enough and shot animals bows or rifles like,
- 40:36Speaker 2: knows that that shot there it does not kill animals.
- 40:40Speaker 3: I call it the nozone.
- 40:41Speaker 2: The nozone. Yeah. I often used to think. I thought
- 40:44Speaker 2: for a long time that it was actually this thing
- 40:46Speaker 2: called the void, where like you're between the spide and
- 40:49Speaker 2: the spine and the lungs, which is not a thing.
- 40:51Speaker 2: I now believe it's not a thing. The body does
- 40:55Speaker 2: not work that way. There is no room in there.
- 40:58Speaker 2: But what there is above the spine is a whole
- 41:01Speaker 2: bunch of a thing called the backstrap and the loin
- 41:04Speaker 2: and meat and fat and fur. And I think a
- 41:08Speaker 2: lot of people that think they hit the void actually
- 41:10Speaker 2: probably ran it through, you know, the hump on the backstrap.
- 41:15Speaker 2: And so yeah, some munk chooses because he drew blood
- 41:18Speaker 2: to basically not his tag. Craig tells him that yeah,
- 41:23Speaker 2: that's actually it wasn't Craig's rule. But a lot of
- 41:26Speaker 2: outfitters in mont in my Manitoba, and I think a
- 41:29Speaker 2: lot of outfitters in general will have that rule that
- 41:33Speaker 2: like if you draw blood, that's you know, your tag,
- 41:36Speaker 2: your hunts over.
- 41:37Speaker 3: It really makes you think about your shot just a
- 41:38Speaker 3: little more.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Yeah, hopefully, I mean I think that would be the
- 41:41Speaker 2: goal that, like, you know, make sure you're going to
- 41:44Speaker 2: get it done when you take the shop. But a
- 41:47Speaker 2: couple of things to address, I think in the YouTube comments,
- 41:50Speaker 2: and I feel like this it gets a little arm
- 41:52Speaker 2: cherry here with the with these comments that people are
- 41:56Speaker 2: like telling telling you what you should have done after
- 42:00Speaker 2: and like I said, like the shot itself, that one
- 42:03Speaker 2: in particular did not kill that animal. Like I'm one
- 42:06Speaker 2: hundred percent sure of it. Those animals will take wounds
- 42:10Speaker 2: like that from the times of other animals. You know,
- 42:13Speaker 2: it could get jumped on by a wolf and the
- 42:18Speaker 2: teeth of a wolf could you know make a wound
- 42:22Speaker 2: like that. It's just it's not a vital hit. You know,
- 42:25Speaker 2: you're not like and that's like a classic when you're
- 42:28Speaker 2: as an elk hunting guide. You two you know, for
- 42:31Speaker 2: a dozen years I did it. It's like a classic
- 42:34Speaker 2: muscle hit. And it doesn't matter if it's in the
- 42:35Speaker 2: backstrap or like straight in the shoulder and you don't
- 42:38Speaker 2: get the penetration to get into the vitals, or it
- 42:41Speaker 2: could be in the rear hand. It's like the first
- 42:43Speaker 2: one hundred yards maybe two hundred yards, you're like hell yeah,
- 42:47Speaker 2: like nice blood trail. And then the next thing, you know,
- 42:50Speaker 2: it just starts going less and less and less, and
- 42:53Speaker 2: then it's pin drops and then it just disappears. Because
- 42:57Speaker 2: it's like it'd be no different than if it happened
- 43:00Speaker 2: to you, Like you could like gash your forearm right
- 43:03Speaker 2: now and then start running towards downtown. For the first
- 43:06Speaker 2: couple hundred yards, it's gonna be pretty easy to follow you.
- 43:09Speaker 2: But eventually it's going to coagulate, start drying up, and
- 43:14Speaker 2: I'm not gonna be able to track your blood anymore,
- 43:16Speaker 2: and you're not gonna die from that wound. But the
- 43:19Speaker 2: first one hundred yards, I'd be like, holy shit, Corey's
- 43:21Speaker 2: going down. But it's just not going to happen. Like
- 43:24Speaker 2: even if you lost a couple of pints of blood,
- 43:27Speaker 2: I don't think it's like you're not going to go down. Yeah,
- 43:32Speaker 2: people ask too about why didn't we go after it
- 43:35Speaker 2: with like a with the rifle, Like it honestly didn't
- 43:38Speaker 2: cross our minds. We didn't have a rifle with us. Yes,
- 43:41Speaker 2: we could have gone back. Let me go back to
- 43:44Speaker 2: one more thing before we eventually, because we stand there
- 43:50Speaker 2: long enough, we're talking, we're filming, we're discussing the situation
- 43:54Speaker 2: we were at first, we were like, okay, we'll give
- 43:57Speaker 2: it a couple hours and then we'll start tracking him.
- 44:00Speaker 2: The bull pops up on a distant hillside. You can
- 44:02Speaker 2: tell it's him because you can see the dried blood
- 44:05Speaker 2: on his side and he's feeding when I saw that,
- 44:10Speaker 2: I'm like, he's fine, Like like one that's gonna die
- 44:15Speaker 2: that night, or that you're gonna sneak up to because
- 44:18Speaker 2: he's wounded and get another arrow in is not just
- 44:21Speaker 2: like chilling and up and feeding anymore, you know. Like
- 44:25Speaker 2: again that arrow just went through muscle, Like, it's just
- 44:29Speaker 2: not like he's not losing enough blood to die. So yeah,
- 44:35Speaker 2: at that point in time, we could have been like, oh, yeah,
- 44:37Speaker 2: let's go back to camp and get a rifle and
- 44:40Speaker 2: we can maybe go rEFInd him and kill him. It
- 44:44Speaker 2: would have been a thing to do for sure. Honestly,
- 44:47Speaker 2: it just did not cross our minds. Some mong was
- 44:50Speaker 2: like notching my tag, I'm done. Yeah, that was That
- 44:53Speaker 2: was the end of it. Would have been nothing wrong
- 44:55Speaker 2: with going after it and trying to kill it. We
- 44:56Speaker 2: may or may not have been able to find it.
- 44:59Speaker 2: I don't think we would have found a wounded animal
- 45:03Speaker 2: and being able to sort of do like a follow
- 45:05Speaker 2: up shot, you know.
- 45:06Speaker 3: Yeah, were they migrating through at that point, like give
- 45:09Speaker 3: it overnight a day later, that group could maybe be
- 45:13Speaker 3: sticking around, but.
- 45:14Speaker 2: He could be. But yeah, like we never saw him again,
- 45:16Speaker 2: Yeah you never did. Yeah, I don't think we ever
- 45:18Speaker 2: saw the same caribou two days in a row, and
- 45:22Speaker 2: probably not even from morning to evening, like they're just
- 45:25Speaker 2: moving that much, you know. So all right, onto my
- 45:31Speaker 2: archery hunt.
- 45:33Speaker 3: Yeah, let's see Kegs rag Underscore nine asks which arrow
- 45:38Speaker 3: broadhead did you use? How heavy was it? And similarly
- 45:41Speaker 3: at hunter j Town wants to know what site you
- 45:44Speaker 3: were running? So what was your archery set up there?
- 45:47Speaker 2: Uh? Yeah it was the The ball was the h
- 45:50Speaker 2: Matthews lyft X. I was running a rip t arrow
- 45:55Speaker 2: with a two hundred grain iron will single bevel with
- 45:58Speaker 2: bleeders on it. Little arrow wait's about five hundred grains.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Kyle David some from DCA Arrows builds those arrows for
- 46:08Speaker 2: me if you if you if you want a really
- 46:13Speaker 2: sweet built arrow. Highly can't recommend Kyle enough. He dials
- 46:17Speaker 2: it in specifically to you know, all of your specs,
- 46:22Speaker 2: and my arrows really fly good every time I get
- 46:24Speaker 2: him from him. The site was a three pin Matthews bridgelock.
- 46:30Speaker 2: UV slider is the model. It's not made by Matthews,
- 46:35Speaker 2: but it's like a collab with I guess UV is
- 46:39Speaker 2: the company. But yeah, I usually run pretty simple, just
- 46:44Speaker 2: three horizontal pins western and Caribou, something like that, they'll
- 46:52Speaker 2: have my pins at thirty, forty and fifty, and then
- 46:55Speaker 2: when I go into the white tail woods, I'll crank
- 46:58Speaker 2: them back so that my pins go twenty thirty. For
- 47:03Speaker 2: a guy said that we're giving Somemong a little too
- 47:06Speaker 2: much love, and that he seemed like a really good guy,
- 47:08Speaker 2: but he wounds a lot of animals and makes poor
- 47:11Speaker 2: short shot choices. He then normalizes it by saying that
- 47:13Speaker 2: it's a part of hunting in quotes, is a major
- 47:17Speaker 2: problem with YouTube hunting influencers, and there's a whole generation
- 47:20Speaker 2: of hunters going up thinking it is okay and normal
- 47:22Speaker 2: to occasionally lose an animal. Yes, it happens, he says.
- 47:26Speaker 2: So I feel like he's sort of what's the word
- 47:31Speaker 2: for that, not dialing back, but he's like saying one
- 47:35Speaker 2: thing but then saying it's okay, yeah, contradicting himself. Thanks Krim.
- 47:41Speaker 2: And he says it's too often for hunters like samong
- 47:44Speaker 2: and the portrayal of it is just off again in quotes,
- 47:47Speaker 2: If a hunter is losing animals as often as Simong does,
- 47:50Speaker 2: he needs to take a step back and seriously analyze
- 47:52Speaker 2: and make changes, not blow it off consistently with in quotes.
- 47:55Speaker 2: That is part of hunting. I disagree with this person.
- 48:03Speaker 2: I think that the reason it seems like Samon is
- 48:07Speaker 2: showing more of this, and I've had people say the
- 48:10Speaker 2: same thing about me watching my videos, it's because we
- 48:13Speaker 2: show all of it. I could very easily not show
- 48:17Speaker 2: all of my poor shots and the misses and all
- 48:21Speaker 2: of that, and you go, oh, man, Yanni, just kill
- 48:24Speaker 2: shit left and right. Man, that guy's a good shot.
- 48:27Speaker 2: It's just it is a part of hunting. Nobody out
- 48:31Speaker 2: there is perfect, and that's why we're always talking about
- 48:33Speaker 2: like when you're not perfect, what bullet do you want
- 48:36Speaker 2: the animal to hit? What arrow and broadhead do you
- 48:39Speaker 2: want the animal to hit? When you're not the best
- 48:41Speaker 2: that you can beat and you didn't make the perfect
- 48:43Speaker 2: shot and you hit into the shoulder, That's why I
- 48:46Speaker 2: shoot the heavy arrow right so hopefully it still does
- 48:48Speaker 2: go through the bone and whatever. And again, I think
- 48:51Speaker 2: it's because he's like open enough and humble enough and
- 48:58Speaker 2: confident enough to show everything that happens out there that
- 49:01Speaker 2: you get to see the highs and lows and then
- 49:05Speaker 2: to act like only YouTube hunting influencers. Yes, is he
- 49:09Speaker 2: do He and I hunt more than the average person,
- 49:12Speaker 2: But I think like as a percentage of our hunts,
- 49:15Speaker 2: I don't think that either one of us are like
- 49:17Speaker 2: losing more animals than anybody else. Like it happens like
- 49:22Speaker 2: growing up, like in deer camp, people wounded deer. Every
- 49:27Speaker 2: you know deer camp, you know there'd be one or
- 49:29Speaker 2: two probably, I don't know, especially doing drives, which we
- 49:32Speaker 2: grew up doing. When you're shooting at running deer, like, yeah,
- 49:36Speaker 2: you're always trying to follow up on them and get them.
- 49:38Speaker 2: But like it is a part of hunting. And if
- 49:41Speaker 2: you have some unbelievable record where you're right now in
- 49:44Speaker 2: your head saying well, I've been hunting twelve years of
- 49:46Speaker 2: killed there's many animals I've never lost one, I'm like, well,
- 49:49Speaker 2: good for you. I applaud you. I think you've had
- 49:51Speaker 2: some luck on your side, and like it's gonna happen
- 49:55Speaker 2: to you. Yeah.
- 49:56Speaker 3: Oh, as an next hunting guide eighteen years, like average
- 50:00Speaker 3: clients a year, it'll make you sick the number of
- 50:02Speaker 3: wounded animals that.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Yeah, both rifle and oh it's not just an archery
- 50:08Speaker 2: It's not just an archery thing. So yeah, I think
- 50:13Speaker 2: it is completely normal to occasionally lose an animal. It
- 50:18Speaker 2: does happen. And again, I think you're just seeing it
- 50:21Speaker 2: more in some monk's case, because yeah, he does hunt more,
- 50:25Speaker 2: and he's like cool enough to actually show you that
- 50:29Speaker 2: it goes both ways. You know that he makes mistakes.
- 50:32Speaker 3: Yep, hats off to that.
- 50:35Speaker 2: All right, now we can do my stock Phil.
- 50:40Speaker 3: You see that big way rock.
- 50:43Speaker 2: You see the way I see.
- 50:49Speaker 1: You could grow right out there?
- 50:52Speaker 4: True here, Yeah, which is God because the wind's in
- 50:56Speaker 4: your favor.
- 51:02Speaker 3: Still rocking that lucky wired to.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Hunt hat, that hunt was good to me, or that
- 51:07Speaker 2: hat was good to me last year, fifty yards of
- 51:13Speaker 2: the same. So I'm stalking the same two bulls that
- 51:23Speaker 2: I had played cat and mouse with for hours in
- 51:26Speaker 2: the morning, and we had bunked them enough times and
- 51:30Speaker 2: they kind of ran off that we left them and
- 51:32Speaker 2: went back to our cabin, went up on the glass
- 51:35Speaker 2: and knob and then refound them, and they were betted,
- 51:38Speaker 2: and we really had nothing better going, so we're like, well,
- 51:41Speaker 2: let's go back and give them another shot. I could
- 51:49Speaker 2: see that one was betted for sure. I couldn't tell
- 51:52Speaker 2: what the other one was doing, and basically I'm just
- 51:55Speaker 2: trying to figure out how to get there, and uh,
- 52:01Speaker 2: it would have been interesting to see. You know, you're
- 52:04Speaker 2: never gonna know. But there was a little point of
- 52:06Speaker 2: trees I think that I leave to get into this
- 52:08Speaker 2: next clump of trees that they're on the other side of.
- 52:11Speaker 2: I probably could have just sat in those trees, and
- 52:14Speaker 2: I think they maybe would have fed by me, just
- 52:16Speaker 2: by the way they got up and what they started
- 52:18Speaker 2: to do. You never know. This obviously ended up being
- 52:23Speaker 2: the right move. One caribou gets up, I think it's
- 52:35Speaker 2: the one that I end up putting an arrow into,
- 52:39Speaker 2: and I just kind of get into this little clump
- 52:41Speaker 2: of trees that they're on the other side of, and
- 52:43Speaker 2: the one surprisingly just like cumbs right at me, and
- 52:48Speaker 2: I thought I was gonna end up with a frontel shot.
- 52:51Speaker 2: And I don't know if he saw me or if
- 52:53Speaker 2: it was just like the path through there was too thick,
- 52:56Speaker 2: but he decided not to do it and kind of
- 52:58Speaker 2: went around me at like fifteen twenty yards, And uh,
- 53:02Speaker 2: I thought I was going to get a shot in
- 53:04Speaker 2: this that one lane you can see just left in
- 53:06Speaker 2: my back there, and I give him the old man
- 53:12Speaker 2: and instead instead of stopping.
- 53:17Speaker 3: All right, you didn't like that, Yeah.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Like he had stopped, but I had brush and then
- 53:22Speaker 2: he takes a step and I may and he like
- 53:25Speaker 2: just trots out into the open a little bit. And
- 53:27Speaker 2: luckily I had one you can't really see it from
- 53:30Speaker 2: the camera's angle, but I had a opening the size
- 53:33Speaker 2: of a football, and he just happened to stop where
- 53:36Speaker 2: I could just see his you know, lower vitals and
- 53:42Speaker 2: let him have the shot.
- 53:43Speaker 3: So Timber, Yeah, you could feel you're adrenaline.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Oh yeah, watching it, Well, it's like it had been
- 53:53Speaker 2: long because this was Brillian our last day to hunt,
- 53:56Speaker 2: and the uh oh, you know, you hunt long enough
- 54:02Speaker 2: with the bow that you start to think like, oh,
- 54:03Speaker 2: it's never gonna happen. It's never gonna happen, which you
- 54:06Speaker 2: just keep pushing on and keep pushing on, and then
- 54:08Speaker 2: all of a sudden, it's like, all of sudden, the
- 54:10Speaker 2: unit it just gels in the universe is like here
- 54:13Speaker 2: you go, here's a caribout twenty five yards, and you know,
- 54:17Speaker 2: and it happens. And I think like, after four days
- 54:20Speaker 2: of trying, you sort of get this like pent up energy,
- 54:24Speaker 2: you know, and so when you finally release that arrow
- 54:26Speaker 2: and it's a good shot and the animal tips over. Yeah,
- 54:28Speaker 2: it's a pretty big flood. Yeah, and it's uh good stuff. Man,
- 54:32Speaker 2: it looked like a hell of a shot. He didn't
- 54:34Speaker 2: go twenty yards something like that, I mean, just enough
- 54:38Speaker 2: to trot out there. It actually was I don't want
- 54:42Speaker 2: to say grotesque, but the footage we actually cut it
- 54:46Speaker 2: a little bit sooner because he trots out there, stops
- 54:50Speaker 2: and almost like tips and puts his nose on the ground,
- 54:53Speaker 2: and when his head comes back up, the amount of
- 54:56Speaker 2: blood that comes out of his nostrils and his mouth
- 54:59Speaker 2: is like it looks gallons. I mean it's it's pretty real, gruesome, real,
- 55:05Speaker 2: it's just raw. Uh. You know, it's just like.
- 55:08Speaker 3: YouTube algorithm, wouldn't it help helped us out there?
- 55:11Speaker 2: Yeah? I don't care about that, but it's just like
- 55:13Speaker 2: there's a little bit of respect, you know for the
- 55:15Speaker 2: animal to show too. It's like, do we really need
- 55:18Speaker 2: to watch that? I don't. It's like, you know, made
- 55:21Speaker 2: a good shot, ran out there, and he died like yeah,
- 55:26Speaker 2: so anyways, Uh, yeah, it was sweet. It was like
- 55:29Speaker 2: just what you hoped for. It was beautiful lighting late
- 55:32Speaker 2: in the day, you know, and then you can actually
- 55:35Speaker 2: sit back and just enjoy the view, you know, because
- 55:37Speaker 2: the work is done. Yeah.
- 55:40Speaker 3: And then how far were you from camp there?
- 55:42Speaker 2: You had the boat, We had the boat. It was short,
- 55:44Speaker 2: It was like half mile to the boat and then beautiful. Yeah,
- 55:48Speaker 2: and then you know, a nice ride back.
- 55:50Speaker 3: You get to pack out every ounce, that's easy.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, carange is dropped in a question. He said
- 55:57Speaker 2: that a couple of folks criticized me for holding my
- 55:59Speaker 2: boat by this. They've never before, I've never like, I've
- 56:03Speaker 2: asked people about that, Like Phil Larson, who built a
- 56:07Speaker 2: bunch of strings for me over the years. I asked
- 56:10Speaker 2: him about it. He had no problem with it. I've
- 56:12Speaker 2: asked the guys at Matthew's no problem with it. Yeah.
- 56:15Speaker 2: I can't imagine what the amount of tension that those
- 56:17Speaker 2: strings go through that you holding it by the string is. Yeah,
- 56:20Speaker 2: does anything exactly. And actually, when you store a recurve bow,
- 56:26Speaker 2: you actually supposed to store it by hanging it from
- 56:29Speaker 2: the string, like right over where the the riser meets
- 56:33Speaker 2: the limb. That's sort of like the recommended method of
- 56:35Speaker 2: storing a recurve.
- 56:37Speaker 3: I know when I'm bushwhack and I like to hold
- 56:39Speaker 3: it by the string, So then my string's not I
- 56:41Speaker 3: know exactly where my strings at. It's not as exposed
- 56:44Speaker 3: to get hung up on something every little stick or
- 56:46Speaker 3: get hung up on a roof.
- 56:47Speaker 2: I mean, you carry him so much that I end
- 56:50Speaker 2: up carrying them a lot of times they're up on
- 56:52Speaker 2: my neck. Sometimes I'm hanging it home by the riser,
- 56:56Speaker 2: sometimes by the handle, and in all different ways. So yeah,
- 57:00Speaker 2: I mean I just packed that thing around for miles
- 57:02Speaker 2: and miles and miles every fall.
- 57:04Speaker 3: So anyways, speaking of so, the John Fox Double O
- 57:08Speaker 3: seven asks how many miles do you think you hiked
- 57:11Speaker 3: on average a day.
- 57:13Speaker 2: I don't know, five to ten somewhere in there. It
- 57:18Speaker 2: was like decent hiking, but not like crazy, like enough
- 57:22Speaker 2: that we were tired at the end of the day,
- 57:24Speaker 2: you know, crossing that tundra there's no trails you're you're
- 57:26Speaker 2: hiking on. You know, it's kind of half squishy, it's
- 57:29Speaker 2: kind of you know, not great walking. Yeah, but yeah,
- 57:34Speaker 2: it wasn't mega hiking.
- 57:37Speaker 3: Another question from Austin Barricklow wants to know what is
- 57:42Speaker 3: harder to do archery elk or archery caribou and what's
- 57:45Speaker 3: the difference.
- 57:46Speaker 2: M I would say archery elk cans down would be harder.
- 57:51Speaker 2: In my opinion, one of the major differences is that
- 57:57Speaker 2: the the like the cariboo, are just less pressure even
- 58:00Speaker 2: though they have pressure. Like I said, we realized that
- 58:03Speaker 2: as the week went on and the things that we learned,
- 58:06Speaker 2: but they still are not getting that. I think the
- 58:09Speaker 2: average pressure of an average public land bull that I'm hunting. Now, sure,
- 58:13Speaker 2: if you're gonna go hunt some really cool ranch they
- 58:16Speaker 2: like used to guide on them, then I might say
- 58:18Speaker 2: it's maybe half dozen, you know, one to the others.
- 58:23Speaker 2: It's kind of it might be the same. But I
- 58:27Speaker 2: think I think it comes down to pressure, and I
- 58:30Speaker 2: just think that like a public land elk is just
- 58:32Speaker 2: you know, it's getting way more pressure. And the thing
- 58:38Speaker 2: too with elk versus caribou. And again it's not always
- 58:42Speaker 2: like this with caribou. But hopefully if you're in the
- 58:44Speaker 2: right spot and you get dropped in the right spot,
- 58:47Speaker 2: like you're gonna get opportunity after opportunity after opportunity, where
- 58:52Speaker 2: with elk a lot of times you get like an
- 58:56Speaker 2: opportunity in hopefully a day, sometimes three days, sometimes five days.
- 59:02Speaker 2: You get one shot, you know, and now I'm not
- 59:04Speaker 2: talking about a shot like with like we release an arrow.
- 59:07Speaker 2: I'm talking about like a shot to make a stock
- 59:09Speaker 2: to get close. And if you mess that up, it's
- 59:12Speaker 2: like they run over the hill and who knows, maybe
- 59:16Speaker 2: they stop on the other side of the mountain, maybe
- 59:18Speaker 2: they go two drainages over, you don't know, and you
- 59:21Speaker 2: got to like restart. And for caribou, restarting meant like
- 59:25Speaker 2: go back to the high point, get up top, and
- 59:28Speaker 2: like find the next bowl that you want to stalk,
- 59:30Speaker 2: and usually within pretty short order. So yeah, I would
- 59:35Speaker 2: definitely say that archer elc is harder. The terrain is harder,
- 59:39Speaker 2: you're at altitude, there's definitely more vert involved. But yeah,
- 59:44Speaker 2: you're not getting the amount of opportunities, you know. I
- 59:48Speaker 2: think caribou is like I don't say it's perfect for
- 59:52Speaker 2: archery hunting, but like if you hit it right, Like
- 59:57Speaker 2: if everybody ever watched the episode of Meat Eater with
- 59:59Speaker 2: Doug dair In and Mark Kanyon, like that was one
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: of the coolest caribou hunts we've ever been on it.
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: I mean we just were in it and every day
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: it's just so many caribou, you know, and everybody I
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: think shot their caribou pretty close, probably to bowl range. Like,
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: I don't think anybody made a shot over one hundred yards,
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: And in it lining up the migration and just being
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: obviously there with the cariboo.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, and I think that's up to your
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: outfitter or your transporter and where they drop you. Yeah,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: And you definitely hear stories of like dudes getting dropped
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: and they don't see a cariboo for a week, or
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: they see a calf and a calf in a week's time, right,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Like you'd hope that the outfitter just didn't take your
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: money and just dropped you somewhere, But I mean, that
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: does happen. So that's why it's always worth like getting
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: some referrals and checking with prior clients and you know,
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: make sure you're going with the right people. They're going
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: to do their best to get you ahead or right
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: into the middle of a of a big wad of them,
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: you know. You know, there's another question somebody was a
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: couple of people asked about us not wearing camouflage and
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: how the alfitter was wearing camouflage. Listen, like we sent
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Craig he probably requested what he wanted. We sent him
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: a bunch of first light. You know, you probably sent
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: it to him. He probably he probably requested the camo.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: You probably didn't choose it. And I think someone got
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: to choose whatever he got to camo or not. And
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: like it's like for me, camouflage, like it matters a
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: lot in some situations, turkey hunting, duck hunting, although you
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: see a lot of duck hunters wearing solids now too,
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: Like we were limited on how much we could take.
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: I just didn't feel like it was going to give
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: me that much of an edge to be to be
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: doing camo. Like I still I still don't know. Like
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: what gives me an edge is like picking the right
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: place to hide, being in the shadows, not moving the camo. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Camo doesn't help you smell any better. You know, you
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: just got to be a good hunter.
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: And and I'll say, you looked extremely broken up. You
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: got a final harness. It's a different color, your backpack, straps,
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: everything like that.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: That dry earth color blends in to that tungra real
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: real nice that I was wearing. So yeah, I don't
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: I don't feel like I I sort of like was
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: making it any harder on myself by not wearing camels.
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: Craig didn't give you a hard time. Then some people
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: thought like, this is gonna be a long weeks not
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: bringing camo. No, yeah, no, not at all to each
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: their own.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, Uh, Phil, no more questions, Krinn, no more questions.
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: Phil is gonna probably watch this episode at lunchtime now,
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: I imagine absolutely after that little teaser. Thank you guys
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: for uh listening and watching. Hope you enjoyed it. If
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: you haven't watched, uh, now you know kind of all
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: the ins and outs and the backstory, the behind the
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: scenes a little bit, so you'll have a different experience
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: watching the episode. But I thought it came out good. Yeah,
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Max and Eli really filmed it well. They did a
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: good job capturing the landscape. Yeah, it was great.
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: It's amazing.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: It's yeah, and we didn't even talk just now. We
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: didn't even talk about the fishing. Oh, we had some
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: incredible fishing. And uh, I think the fishing was so
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: good that Max and Eli put down their cameras and
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: did some fishing and we for as many pike as
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: we caught, Like we couldn't find a pike that was
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: actually caught on camera, but we had one evening where
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: it glassed out and every little back bay we would
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: go into, like the first cast top water, you could
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: see the wakes coming as they crashed the top water.
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: Whatever you were fishing, it was, it was. It was
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: rad And like I said in the episode, he can't
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: go to a place like that that has world class fishing.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: It's like not pressure, not pressured, and not do a
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: little bit of fishing. Like you just have to go
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: out there and go, oh wow, this is what unpressured
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: fishing's like. Like it's almost every single cast.
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: I'd love to go out there just to fish.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Yeah, they're into it too. They do the fly rod
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: thing up there for the pike.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: Do they know it's fun?
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Totally corn anything else I need to plug. That's it,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: all right, Thanks again for watching and listening. Stay tuned.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: What's the next twelve and twenty six coming up?
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: I think it has to do with a giant shotgun.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Ooh okay, stay tuned for a giant shotgun. For those
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: of you that know, you know, it should be uh
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: should be exciting.
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: I imagine I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: I'll watch it. See you by
