- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Masterminds Podcast.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: This is the place where weekly you get to open your mind to beautiful concepts and ideas that will hopefully transform you into the mastermind that I know you are destined to be.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: My name is Richie Menta, and I'll be your guide on this exciting journey.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: So, what we're talking about today is something that I am passionate about, pun intended.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: So usually I would prepare notes and know what I'm going to say and everything before I sit down here.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: But today I came unprepared because if I can't talk about this topic from my heart, then I'm a fraud.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And we all know I'm not a fraud.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: So today we're talking about passion and purpose.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: So one of the things that has really helped me in my life, I always talk about the fact that I have lived a very stressful, tiring life ever since I started to work.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Because every day is a new challenge, so exhausting.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: You know, the path that I chose is not an easy one.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: But do you know why I'm always smiling and I'm always awesome?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Because I'm passionate about what I do.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And then I combined it with purpose.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So if you're watching me right now, the fact that you chose to select this video to watch tells me that you are looking for that passion.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: You are looking for a way to combine your life's work with meaning so that you can just fulfill yourself in ways that you can't imagine.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: You know, it's very easy to follow the money or follow the crowd or just follow people and go do anything.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: You know, your dad said go to law school, so you went to law school.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Your mom said, be a footballer, so you're playing football.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: You know, the girls like, you know, a singer, so you are just singing.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: But to really amount to a lot in life, you need to follow your passion and attach it to a purpose.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: There's a Japanese concept which I have taken very personally.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: It's called ikigai.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: So ikigai is supposed to be a subset of four important things.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: The first one is something you are good at.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: The second is something you love to do, you are passionate about.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: The third is something that the world needs.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And the fourth is something that can earn you money, make a living.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: When you are able to find one thing that fits in these four general areas, you have now found your icky guy.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And that's what I call passion, meeting purpose.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: You know, one of the reasons a lot of people, when I finished senior high and I started Lynx and started the studio, and they would ask me, but Richie, you're a very bright kid.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Don't you think you should continue school?
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I used to say something which sounded arrogant then, but made so much sense now.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: I told them, Well, I'm going to school to learn how to make money.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I now know how I'm going to make money.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Don't you think I should start building my passionate job?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly what I did.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Now, I know most people are out there watching right now and thinking, but will it work for me?
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: The truth is, if you are true to yourself, if you do know what you want, you know who you are.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: And you are doing it for a bigger reason aside yourself.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about that.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: That is what we call purpose.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: It's not good enough to want something for selfish reasons.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Anybody can think about themselves because at the end of the day, that is, human beings are selfish in nature.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So if you're only trying to do something for survival or because it's just that interest, yeah, it's okay.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: But true purpose goes beyond yourself.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: You look at something the world needs, something you can uniquely give the world that will uplift people, change the world, change the way people think, change the way people feel.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Like as I'm sitting here talking on this podcast, the reason I'm doing this is I feel this is the purpose for this time in my life.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I love how much knowledge I've been able to acquire.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: I love how I've struggled to grow and develop myself.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: And I don't want the next person who wants to grow to have to suffer like I did.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: So if all I can do is find a way to consistently share my knowledge, share my experiences, share my journey to inspire somebody else on this, then I know I have contributed to the world.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: If with all the podcasts that I'm releasing weekly, I can only influence 10 people, and those 10 people build lifestyles that is now going to influence everyone around them, then I have served the world.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: That is purpose.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Purpose is thinking about the world and the value that you can give to the world.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And passion is a desire to want to have to actually have that value.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: A passionate person is one who has chosen their interest, is devoted to their interest, and has the discipline to follow through.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: You see, a passion is deeper than an interest.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Interest is very simple.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: We all have interest.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Let's go to relationships.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: You meet a good-looking girl, you're interested.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: You meet a good-looking guy, you're interested.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: It's interesting, it's unique.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, where will this take me to?
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: But passion is actual devotion.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: No, a lot of people say that divorce rates are very, very high right now because of this and because of that, because men are trash, because women aren't what they used to be anymore.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: They give so many reasons.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: But the truth is, I believe relationships aren't working the way they used to because we are lacking passion.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: We jump into relationships based on interest.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Every guy is looking for the most good-looking girl.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: The girl is looking for a guy who can take care of her needs.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: We've forgotten the dedication to passion, the discipline it takes to be living in the same house with somebody for the rest of your life, to want to have somebody in your life every single day for the rest of your life.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: It takes passion to keep it going.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: It's the same for work.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: You are going to have a job.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: You are going to go to work every single day.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Are you passionate about it or are you just punching the clock?
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Are you trying to find a way to, you know, buy the time?
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Or are you excited?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: So many people say they hate Mondays.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: I love Mondays.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Monday is a great opportunity to go to work.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: I'm excited when I'm going to work because I'm going to work on something I'm passionate about.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: And I know at the end of the day, I'm fulfilling my purpose because what I'm doing connects to the world in a bigger way.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Then, when you talk about passion, I know most people, like, yes, you look at someone like me and the job I'm doing, I'm doing music, so you can understand how there's passion, but that's not it actually.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: So many people can have passion for their job.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: A doctor is passionate about healing.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: A lawyer is passionate about justice.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: I know somebody whose passion is cars.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Anything to do with cars, and they get super, super excited.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: So your passion can be anything.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Your passion can be numbers, which would make you great in the finance industry.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Warren Buffett's passion is investing.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: While people are trying to make a quick buck and flip money over and everything, he is taking his time.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: When you listen to Warren Buffett talk about investment, you can see he loves it.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: He loves the idea of putting small amounts of money over a long period of time to grow it into wealth.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: That's his passion.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Somebody's passion is eating.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: They're a food taster, they're a food critic.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: And when it comes to work and brands and everything that we do, there's something that I always like to say, especially with brands.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I say there's no such thing as a bad brand, only bad branding.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: The reason I say this is anything that you want to do in this world, it works.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Just go look at the top 10 richest men in the world.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: You will notice they don't have the same jobs.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: They're in completely different industries.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Because the reason is anything you want to do can work.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: It just needs to be genuine.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: It needs to be something that you honestly do care about.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: If you are working on something that you are not passionate about, you are most likely going to fail.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: And the reason for the failure is you won't be able to have that dedication and that discipline that is required to get to success.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Every time you hit a stumbling block, you ask yourself, why am I even doing this?
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: You have somebody going to work and they are asking why they're not getting a promotion.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: They are not getting a promotion because they see their job as a chore.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: They see their job as something that they are being forced to do.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: They don't understand why their boss is calling them at 11 p.m.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: in the evening.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: There's no passion in what they are doing.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: The more passionate you are about something, the more you excel at it.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Now let's talk about how to grow your passion.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: When I mentioned Ikigai, if you remember, I mentioned four things.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: I did talk about something you love, which talks about a passion.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: I spoke about something which benefits the world that talks about purpose.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: I spoke about something that makes you money and that explains why it can be a career.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: But one part we neglect is something you are good at.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Now the thing is, you don't automatically become good at something.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: It takes practice.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: It takes refining your skills, it takes consistency to become good at something.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: So it's not good enough to just say, I'm passionate about singing, I'm passionate about playing football, I'm passionate about healing people, so I'm going to be a doctor.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Are you willing to put in the hours it will take to become an expert?
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Are you willing to put in the effort and the consistency it will take to become a pro?
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Because bear in mind, the most professional person you know was an amateur.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Everyone started from zero.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: So the fact that you are not good at something right now only means you need to be dedicated enough to become good at it.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: So when I meet maybe like a talent or somebody and they're in a field and they don't know everything about their field, they are not trying to grow, they are not trying to learn.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: You are in videography and you don't know the newest camera that came out.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: You don't understand the difference between ISO and aperture.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: You know, you don't know which camera works for which type of shoot.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Or you say, because I'm in videography, I don't need to understand lighting and how it affects a scene.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Then you are not actually passionate.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: You're just trying to earn a living.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: You need to hunger for success.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: You need to hunger for the growth in a positive way.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: You need to be able to build that discipline that keeps you going for so long that your passion will meet your purpose, which will take you to success.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Whatever it is in your life that you feel you have an interest in, push further.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself, is it more than just an interest?
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Or can it actually become a passion?
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself, are you disciplined enough to keep going?
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Are you disciplined enough to make sure you will succeed at what you are doing?
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And are you doing this for a bigger purpose?
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Or is it just for selfish reasons?
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Like I know artists who became musicians because they wanted to date good-looking girls.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: How do you think you're going to reach the top if that's your motivation?
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: You need to have a bigger purpose.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: You need to want to serve humanity.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Because that actually is what a career is.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Every single career is a service to mankind.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: That's the only reason it's valuable.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: So the reason to choose a job should be because you know you have the unique ability, you want to do it, and you want to do it because you want to serve humanity.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: If you combine these elements and you keep going with discipline over a long period of time to maintain your consistency, you would be amazed at how your life will transform.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: So today, just ask yourself right now, are you passionate about what you're doing?
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Wherever you're watching me from?
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: If you're watching me from work, are you passionate about the job you're doing right now?
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Are you passionate about your loved ones?
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Are you passionate about your friends?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Are you passionate about the food you eat?
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Because if you're not passionate about the food you eat, why even eat that food in the first place?
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: There are so many options.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Whatever your budget is, there's an option for you that you can be passionate about.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: You know, growing up, my mom always said I didn't like food.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Because you have to push me, sir, before I eat.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: Do you know what changed?
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And now suddenly people think I like food so much.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: It's because I started realizing the types of food that I like.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: I did my due diligence to understand myself and see the type of foods that I like.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: So that when that food is in front of me, I get excited.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: I'm passionate.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: So up till now, if it's the wrong meal, I'm not interested.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: And that can be you in every area of your life.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: YOLO, you only live once.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Don't waste your time on things you have no interest in.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Don't waste your time and your efforts to live a life without passion.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: And for your own sake, make sure you have a purpose.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Because on your deathbed, you are not going to remember the material things, you are not going to remember the fleeting moments, you are going to ask yourself, What did I do with my life?
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: And that question is answered by purpose.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: So follow your passion, find a purpose so that you can truly become the mastermind I know you are meant to be.
