But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him: — 1 John 2:5

John ties keeping Christ's word to the love of God being perfected in us. But he's not talking about earning God's love through obedience — he's describing what a life looks like when God's love has taken hold. The God of peace, who brought our Lord Jesus from the dead, works in us what pleases Him. Love perfected isn't flawless performance; it's consistent abiding.
