- 1:26Roderick Justin Farrell was born into a young family in Murray,
- 1:30KY, in March of 1980. His teenage parents soon parted
- 1:35ways when his father enlisted in the military, leaving him in the
- 1:40care of his mother, Sandra Gibson.
- 1:43Their living situation fluctuated, sometimes residing
- 1:47with his grandparents. Court documents reveal Farrell's
- 1:51allegations of being abused by his maternal grandfather at age
- 1:565, though these claims never led to any criminal charges.
- 2:01The mother and son duo also faced times of instability,
- 2:05relying on public housing and Sandra's income from exotic
- 2:09dancing and occasional sex work. Roderick's childhood was marked
- 2:15by these hardships, and the absence of a father figure,
- 2:19compounded by serious yet unproven accusations of abuse by
- 2:24his grandfather, added layers of complexity and unanswered
- 2:29questions to his early years. The domestic life of Sandra and
- 2:35Rod was marked by instability, constantly shifting between
- 2:40temporary stays of Sandra's parents abode and an assortment
- 2:44of public housing accommodations.
- 2:47From the earliest moments of Rod's childhood, Sandra
- 2:51initiated him into the shadowy world of the undead, nurturing a
- 2:56mutual obsession with the lore of vampires through the medium
- 3:02of Dracula films and the pages of Vampire the Masquerade
- 3:08novels. Yet this connection they shared
- 3:12was overshadowed by Sandra's questionable parenting methods
- 3:17and what Rod ambiguously described as the complex essence
- 3:22of their relationship. Gibson permitted Farrell to
- 3:26construct an altar dedicated to satanic worship adorned with an
- 3:31inverted cross and skulls within his bedroom.
- 3:36In her own bedroom, she displayed A satanic emblem
- 3:40prominently on the floor. Furthermore, she allowed Farrell
- 3:44to skip school and neglected to seek psychological assistance
- 3:48for him when he began engaging in self harm.
- 3:52Gibson engaged inappropriately with her son's friends, earning
- 3:57probation for her attempts to seduce a 14 year old into a
- 4:01physical encounter under the guise of a vampire initiation
- 4:06ritual. Additionally, she harbored
- 4:09romantic feelings for Stephen Murphy, a teenager she believed
- 4:14had transformed Pharaoh into a vampire.
- 4:18Murphy testified before the jury, revealing that he had
- 4:22initiated Pharaoh into vampirism through a ritual in a graveyard
- 4:272 years prior involving the cutting of their arms and the
- 4:32mutual consumption of each other's blood.
- 4:36This ritual was not a one time event, rather it became a
- 4:40regular practice for them. Additionally, they often
- 4:44participated in night time gatherings dedicated to a cult
- 4:48role-playing, immersing themselves in these activities
- 4:52until the early hours. As Sandra reached the age of 34,
- 4:57the arty strained dynamics with her son took a darker turn.
- 5:02This was brought to light when she found to be exchanging
- 5:04unsettlingly affectionate love letters with the 14 year old
- 5:09boy. These letters were not merely
- 5:11inappropriate, they were a window into the depth of
- 5:14dysfunction and the twisted intertwining of love and
- 5:19darkness that defined their household, adding layers of
- 5:23mystery and concern to an already complicated family
- 5:28dynamic. After Sandra's parents settled
- 5:31into a new home they acquired in Eustace, Florida, around the
- 5:36year 1990, Gibson and Pharrell found themselves oscillating
- 5:41between Murray and Eustace. It was during their time in
- 5:45Florida that Pharrell struck up a friendship with Heather
- 5:48Wendorf, A sophomore at Eustace High School.
- 5:53Described by the Sentinel as a rebellious teen who clashed with
- 5:57her parents over mundane tasks such as cleaning her room,
- 6:02Heather's relationship with her family was fraud.
- 6:06Following Pharrell's return to Kentucky for his 10th grade
- 6:08year, he maintained contact with Heather through collect calls,
- 6:13incurring significant phone bills that eventually LED her
- 6:17parents to intervene, a decision that left Heather fuming.
- 6:22Upon returning to the familiar environment of Murray, Farrell
- 6:26began weaving intricate narratives about his alleged
- 6:29identity as a 500 year old vampire, Adopting the moniker
- 6:35the Sajo. This persona became the
- 6:38cornerstone of his enigmatic allure, attracting A dedicated
- 6:42circle of followers, each drawn to his dark charisma and the
- 6:47promise of belonging to something beyond the ordinary.
- 6:51Among these adherents was Howard Scott Anderson, a 16 year old
- 6:57who grappled with the hardships of a tumultuous upbringing
- 7:01characterized by financial instability and the shadow of
- 7:05domestic turmoil cast by an alcoholic father known for his
- 7:10abusive behavior towards Anderson's mother, the cadre of
- 7:15followers that Pharrell amassed was as diverse as it was
- 7:19devoted. There was Charity Kisi, a young
- 7:23woman whose search for acceptance and understanding LED
- 7:28her into Pharaoh's orbit, her own life marked by a series of
- 7:33personal challenges that rendered her susceptible to the
- 7:37allure of Pharaoh's world. Dana Cooper, another key figure
- 7:43in the group, found in Pharrell's tales of vampirism,
- 7:47an eternal life of refuge from her own demons, and the
- 7:52alienation she felt from society at large.
- 7:56As Pharrell's influence grew, so too did the escalation of their
- 8:00activities. October of 1996 marked a turning
- 8:04point when Pharrell and his followers were implicated in a
- 8:08particularly disturbing episode at the Murray Callaway County
- 8:13Animal Shelter. In an event that shook the local
- 8:16community, two puppies were found dead under gruesome
- 8:20circumstances. A chilling testament to the
- 8:23increasing malevolence of the group's actions, the incident
- 8:28was a stark departure from the group's previously less ominous
- 8:32endeavors and heralded A descent into more sinister behavior.
- 8:38The book The Vampire Killers provides A detailed account of
- 8:42the aftermath of this incident, chronicling Pharaoh's arrest and
- 8:47the charges levied against him, including burglary, trespassing,
- 8:52and the egregious act of cruelty to animals.
- 8:57This escalation not only marked a dark chapter in the group's
- 8:59history, but also served as a prelude to more heinous acts
- 9:04that would later define their legacy.
- 9:07Each follower, bound by their own complex tapestry, a personal
- 9:12strife, and the draw of Farrell's vampiric fantasy,
- 9:17found themselves embroiled in a narrative that would ultimately
- 9:20lead them far from the paths they may have taken otherwise,
- 9:26plunging them into an abyss from which there would be no return.
- 9:31The Congregation sanctuary was ominously dubbed the Vampire
- 9:36Hotel. A forsaken edifice failed by the
- 9:40dense woods encircling Kentucky Lake, nestled in the secluded
- 9:45expanse of the land between the lakes.
- 9:49The sinister venue, shrouded in mystery and decay, served as the
- 9:54clandestine gathering point for the clan within its crumbling
- 9:58walls. They indulged in hedonistic
- 10:01revelries, immersed themselves in the mind altering haze of
- 10:07psychedelic substances and engaged in arcane rituals that
- 10:13whispered of ancient forgotten riots.
- 10:16According to Rod, the very atmosphere of the place hummed
- 10:20with an eerie energy, as if the land itself bore witness to the
- 10:25dark ceremonies that unfolded under the cloak of night, adding
- 10:30yet more layers of mystery and foreboding to their nocturnal
- 10:35assemblies. In the shadowed chill of
- 10:38November of 1996, a moment pregnant with dark
- 10:42potentialities unfolded as Rod Farrell alongside with youthful
- 10:49accomplice and lover Charity Kesey, Howard, Scott Anderson
- 10:54and Dana Cooper, who was then 19, set forth on an unholy
- 11:00expedition. They traversed the roads in
- 11:04Anderson's vehicle, cutting through the veils of the night
- 11:08towards Eustace. Their mission was to retrieve
- 11:12Heather Wendorf, Pharaoh, ensnared by visions of a
- 11:17grandiose future dreamt of leading them to New Orleans.
- 11:22There, amidst the city's cryptic aura, they aspired to rebirth
- 11:26themselves into a vampiric dynasty shrouded from the eyes
- 11:31of the world. Within Pharaoh's twisted
- 11:35salvation narrative, he cast himself as the savior, pulling
- 11:40Wendorf from The Tempest of her familiar strife.
- 11:45Documents from the corps peeled back the layers of this saga,
- 11:50revealing Heather's whispered admissions to Pharaoh.
- 11:53She spoke of shadows cast by alleged abuse from her barons,
- 11:58and of a deep seated desperation to flee the confines of her
- 12:02oppressive home life. This intricate lattice of
- 12:06connections, ambitions dark as the void and secretive plans
- 12:12laid the groundwork for a sequence of events destined to
- 12:16unravel with harrowing consequences, all enshrouded
- 12:22within an impenetrable cloak of ominous anticipation.
- 12:28On the chilly evening of November 25th, 1996, Rod Ferrell
- 12:35and his entourage embarked on a lengthy 750 mile journey from
- 12:41the quaint town of Murray, KY to the sun drenched streets of
- 12:47Eustis, FL. Their mission was fraught with
- 12:51anticipation and dark purpose. Upon successfully retrieving
- 12:56Heather after their vehicle succumbed to mechanical failure,
- 13:01secretive pact was forged between her and Rod.
- 13:05Heather agreed to give Rod the keys to her family's home,
- 13:09thereby enabling the theft of the family's vehicle to ensure
- 13:14the group's passage to New Orleans could proceed.
- 13:18In a twisted exchange for her complicity, Rod vowed to
- 13:22initiate Heather into their vampiric fold through a macabre
- 13:27turning ritual, promising her an eternal existence alongside him.
- 13:34The ceremony took place in a secluded area of a Eustace
- 13:38cemetery. Just before dawn.
- 13:41To prepare, Rod took a significant amount of LSD, which
- 13:46altered his perception and made the atmosphere of the ritual
- 13:51seem more intense. Heather, following through on
- 13:55her agreement and wanting to change, drank blood from a cut
- 14:00that Roderick had made on himself with a razor blade.
- 14:04This action showed her commitment to their agreement
- 14:08and represented her step into the lifestyle that Fraila
- 14:12described to her. With the ritual concluding and
- 14:16their pact sealed in blood, the group hastily departed the
- 14:20cemetery. Their immediate objective was to
- 14:24return to Heather's residence to procure the family car, a
- 14:29crucial element in their grand plan to reach New Orleans.
- 14:35Upon their stealthy entrance into the Wendorf, home to the
- 14:39dimly lit garage, Roderick and Scott encountered Mr. Richard
- 14:43Wendorf, 49 years old, in the throes of a peaceful slumber on
- 14:49the living room couch. The boys maneuvered past him,
- 14:54his presence undisturbed by their silent footsteps.
- 14:58A cursory sweep of the house was all it took before their pass
- 15:02LED them back to the unsuspecting figure on the sofa.
- 15:07Roderick later confessed that that night was never meant to
- 15:10end in bloodshed. Yet as he stood over Richard
- 15:14once more, something dark and uncontrollable within him was
- 15:19unleashed. A silent exchange of glances
- 15:23between Rod and Anderson served as the prelude to the chaos that
- 15:29was about to unfold. Anderson would later recall the
- 15:33moment with chilling simplicity, stating that's when Rod went
- 15:38crazy. With a frenzied energy, Pharaoh
- 15:43raised a crowbar high, bringing it down on Richard's skull with
- 15:48terrifying force, not once, but repeatedly.
- 15:54The violence of the assault was such that blood was cast in a
- 15:58horrific arc, marking every surface of the living room and a
- 16:03grim testament to the brutality of the ACT.
- 16:07The ferocity of the blows was enough to dislodge teeth from
- 16:11Richard's mouth, scattering them amidst the spattered blood where
- 16:17they would later be painstakingly collected by
- 16:20investigators as silent witnesses to the barbarity of
- 16:26that night. Ruth Wendorf, aged 54 and a
- 16:32committed volunteer at the Eustace High School, was
- 16:35oblivious to the grim scene unfolding in her living room as
- 16:40she showered while her husband met a brutal end.
- 16:44When she emerged from the bathroom, clad in her robe and
- 16:48entirely unaware of the tragedy, she proceeded into the kitchen.
- 16:53It was there that she encountered Rod Ferrell.
- 16:57Chillingly holding a crowbar dripping with her husband's
- 17:00blood, Rod reportedly confessed to her that he had just ended
- 17:05her husband's life. Shocked and undoubtedly
- 17:09grappling with the sudden horror of the situation, Missus Wendorf
- 17:14inquired about his intentions. In response, Ferrell advanced
- 17:20towards her, prompting her to defensively throw the contents
- 17:25of her coffee cup at him. The hot liquid only seemed to
- 17:29fuel Rod's rage, leading to his violent outburst.
- 17:35The aftermath of their confrontation told a tale of
- 17:38desperate struggle. An examination of her body
- 17:42revealed numerous defensive wounds across her hands in arms,
- 17:47testifying to the fierce resistance she mounted.
- 17:51Rod too would bear evidence of the altercation, with numerous
- 17:55scratches adorning the right side of his face and neck,
- 17:59markers of Ruth's valiant fight. In a frantic bid to escape, Ruth
- 18:05attempted to flee through the kitchen.
- 18:08However, Farrell was alarmingly close and managed to deliver 4
- 18:13devastating blows to the back of her skull with such force that
- 18:19fragments of her shattered skull were subsequently discovered in
- 18:23the dining room. This act of brutality marked the
- 18:28tragic culmination of the encounter, leaving a stark and a
- 18:32harrowing scene in its wake. By that time, you know, it was
- 18:37pretty obvious I had blood on me and a crowbar in my hand.
- 18:43I was fixing to say, yeah, I want to have coffee with you.
- 18:47Son of a bitching smart ass. But anyway, that's when she
- 18:52lunged at me 'cause I was actually going to let her live.
- 18:57But after she lunged at me, I just took the bottom of the
- 19:00crowbar and kept stabbing it through her skull whenever she
- 19:05fell down. I just continually beat her
- 19:08until I saw her brains falling on the floor, 'cause that pissed
- 19:12me off. And that was pulled from
- 19:15Roderick Farrell's confession regarding the on the living of
- 19:19Ruth Wendorff. According to the detailed
- 19:23account provided by Rod Ferrell, Scott Anderson refrained from
- 19:26physically assaulting either of the victims during the tragic
- 19:30events that unfolded. However, Anderson's inaction
- 19:35extended further as he failed to offer any form of assistance or
- 19:40intervention to the victims. In the grim aftermath, both he
- 19:45and Rod embarked on a meticulous search throughout the House,
- 19:49their objective clear to locate the keys to the Wendorf's Ford
- 19:55Explorer. Their search wasn't solely for
- 19:58the vehicle's keys. They also scavenged for any cash
- 20:02laying around, no matter how insignificant the amount, adding
- 20:07theft to their already heinous acts.
- 20:11Rod's recounting of his emotional state following the
- 20:14brutal murders is chillingly detailed.
- 20:19He describes an overwhelming sense and euphoria, A disturbing
- 20:24euphoria that coursed through him, likening his feelings to
- 20:29those of a deity wielding the ultimate dominion over life and
- 20:33death itself. This disturbing admission
- 20:37reveals a profound detachment from the gravity of his actions,
- 20:42illustrating A deeply troubling mindset.
- 20:46The macabre scene took an even darker turn.
- 20:49Before their departure from the Wendorf residence, Rod engaged
- 20:55in what can only be described as a grotesque, ritualistic display
- 21:00around Richard Wendorf's lifeless body, which was slowly
- 21:04losing its warmth. This ghastly dance was not
- 21:08merely an act of disrespect, but seemed to serve as a sinister
- 21:13celebration of the violence he had inflicted.
- 21:17Following this eerie display, Rod proceeded to desecrate the
- 21:21body further. He forcibly opened the shirt of
- 21:25the deceased and with a lit cigarette, meticulously burned
- 21:31the letter V into Richard Wendorf's chest.
- 21:36This act was not random vandalism, but a calculated
- 21:40symbol, the signature of Visaggio, the vampiric persona
- 21:46that Rod had adopted. This act of branding the victim
- 21:50post mortem served as a twisted claim of responsibility in a
- 21:55stark manifestation of Rod's delusions and the depth of his
- 22:02immersion in a dark, fantastical identity.
- 22:08Jennifer Wendorf, age 17, Heather's sister was elsewhere
- 22:14engaged in her job. While the grim fate of her
- 22:17parents was being sealed by Rod. Lately, tensions had flared
- 22:24between her and her parents, primarily due to Jennifer's
- 22:28reoccurant breaches of the curfew to spend time with her
- 22:32boyfriend that night. Upon returning home a tad later
- 22:36than expected, Jennifer was intent on avoiding any
- 22:40confrontation. She aimed to move as stealthily
- 22:44as possible, hoping to slip unnoticed into her bedroom,
- 22:49thereby dodging any potential scolding of her tardiness.
- 22:53As she entered, Jennifer noticed the outline of her father in the
- 22:57dim light, seemingly at rest. Believing him to be asleep, she
- 23:03proceeded with the utmost silence towards the kitchen.
- 23:07It was there that she stumbled upon a harrowing sight, her
- 23:12mother's lifeless body sprawled between the kitchen.
- 23:16In the dining room, her face downturned, immersed in a
- 23:22chilling pool of blood. Overwhelmed by confusion and
- 23:26terror, Jennifer hastily reached for the phone to dial 911.
- 23:33With her voice shaking, she attempted to articulate the
- 23:37horror she had just discovered. Struggling to convey the gravity
- 23:42of the situation through her frantic explanations, Rod
- 23:48Farrell and his followers fled, leaving the town of Eustace
- 23:51behind as they ventured into the unknown, aiming for a fresh
- 23:57start in Louisiana. Debate continues to swirl around
- 24:02the extent of Heather's awareness.
- 24:04Prior to the tragic events, however, it was unmistakenly
- 24:09clear to her when Rod arrived to pick her up and the other girls
- 24:14in the stolen explorer, his appearance marred by blood.
- 24:19At that moment, any doubts she might have had evaporated.
- 24:25There's consensus among those involved that Heather was
- 24:29unaware of Rod's hideous intentions.
- 24:32Rod himself has claimed that there was never a concrete plan
- 24:36to commit the unthinkable, although this claim is somewhat
- 24:40contradicted by other statements indicating that there have been
- 24:44discussions about potentially killing the wind dwarfs during
- 24:48their journey to Florida, a notion they all purportedly
- 24:52considered a dark jest. Rod also maintained that Dana
- 24:57and Charity were merely facilitators who dropped him off
- 25:01at the scene, unaware of the impending horror.
- 25:04This, he asserts, remains an ambiguous part of the narrative.
- 25:11Moreover, Rod suggested that Heather was not entirely in the
- 25:15dark about the potential for violence.
- 25:19He recounted numerous discussions with her and her
- 25:23alleged home abuse, which, for clarification, Heather did not
- 25:28experience. According to Rod, Heather was
- 25:32well aware of the looming threat of her parents lives, a claim
- 25:36that has not wavered over time. From my perspective, it's
- 25:40plausible that Heather was more knowledgeable about the
- 25:43situation and she's admitted. In a separate development, an
- 25:48abandoned Buick was discovered by a deputy sheriff in Spinale
- 25:52County, left in Sanford near the Central Florida Zoo off US Hwy.
- 25:581792. The car's license plate was
- 26:03registered to the Windorf's Explorer.
- 26:07ABOLO goes out for the stolen vehicle, a blue explorer bearing
- 26:12Kentucky tag DTB Dash 836. After three days of travel, Rod
- 26:20Farrell's group found themselves in Baton Rouge, LA.
- 26:25Exhausted, famished, and penniless.
- 26:29Aimlessly, they roamed the city streets, devoid of any clear
- 26:34direction or purpose and a moment of desperation.
- 26:40Charity Kisi reached out to her grandmother in South Dakota,
- 26:44hopeful for financial assistance.
- 26:48Unbeknownst to Kisi, her grandmother alerted the
- 26:51authorities to their location. Persuading her granddaughter and
- 26:56the rest of the group to seek refuge at a nearby Howard
- 27:00Johnson's hotel, She unknowingly lured them into a meticulously
- 27:05laid trap. Consequently, the Kentucky
- 27:09vampire cult, oblivious to the impending law enforcement
- 27:14ambush, walked directly into custody without resistance.
- 27:21They were detained in a Baton Rouge jail, where they awaited
- 27:25extradition to Florida for a week.
- 27:29In the confines of the Lake County Detention Center, Rod
- 27:33Ferrell's confession unfolded with a chilling lack of regret.
- 27:38He appeared to take a perverse pride in his actions,
- 27:42meticulously recounting the grisly specifics of his crimes
- 27:46with a morbid enthusiasm that painted a vivid and horrifying
- 27:51picture in front of the cameras. Rod turned his court appearances
- 27:57into a spectacle, smirking and delivering caustic remarks with
- 28:03a defiant Air. Sandra, his mother, swiftly took
- 28:08to the media to defend him. Her expressions of support for
- 28:12vampirism and Rod's chosen way of life provided A revealing
- 28:17look into the unusual and unsettling environment that
- 28:22shaped his childhood and adolescence.
- 28:26Following their arrest, Pharaoh fully embraced a persona of a
- 28:30vampire antagonist. In discussions with the Orlando
- 28:34Sentinel, he made the astonishing claim that he was
- 28:38the victim of a set up by a rival vampire faction,
- 28:43contending he had multiple personalities and was attempting
- 28:47to abandon his vampire identity. His defiance was on full display
- 28:52during photo sessions where he would provocatively stick out
- 28:56his tongue or sarcastically utter God Bless America.
- 29:02Contrary to his previous defiant stance, Pharaoh surprised
- 29:06everyone by pleading guilty to the two counts of first degree
- 29:12at the commencement of his trial on February the 5th, 1998.
- 29:18He acknowledges his responsibility and desires to
- 29:21continue living, his lawyer stated, moving his mother to
- 29:26tears. Shortly thereafter, he was
- 29:29sentenced to death, with CBS News quoting Circuit Judge Jerry
- 29:35Lockett as saying, I perceive you as a disturbed young man,
- 29:41your family let you down, as did society.
- 29:45Howard Scott Anderson, for his involvement in the window of
- 29:49slayings, entered a guilty plea in April of 1998 and was
- 29:56sentenced to life imprisonment. Soon after, Dana Cooper and
- 30:01Charity Keesey reached plea agreements resulting in reduced
- 30:05charges and sentences. Kesey received a 10 year
- 30:09sentence while Cooper was sentenced to 17 years.
- 30:14Both women have since been released.
- 30:17In December of 2018, the Daily Commercial reported that
- 30:21Anderson's sentence was reduced to 40 years with credit for time
- 30:26served. He is expected to be released at
- 30:30the age of 51. Rod Ferrell is currently
- 30:35incarcerated at the Tomoka Correctional Institution located
- 30:39in Volusia County, Florida. At the tender age of 17, Farrell
- 30:45became the youngest inmate on death row in the United States.
- 30:49His death sentence was converted to life imprisonment in November
- 30:54of 2000 following a Florida Supreme Court decision that
- 30:59mandated that perpetrators be at least 17 years old at the time
- 31:02of their crime to be eligible for capital punishment.
- 31:08In an attempt to reduce his life sentence, Farrell approached the
- 31:11courts once more in 2020, only to be met with a denial.
- 31:16The presiding judge described him as irreparably corrupt.
- 31:21In his ruling during the 2020 sentencing hearing, Jennifer
- 31:26Wendorf, Heather Wendorf's sister, provided a powerful
- 31:30testimony. She recounted the profound
- 31:33trauma she continues to endure as the one who discovered the
- 31:37bodies of her parents. Her pleas to the judge were not
- 31:42ignored. She would say.
- 31:45May I have a place that's not traumatized by looking over my
- 31:48shoulder. If he ever gets out, I'll be
- 31:52destroyed. I'll be back to that lonely
- 31:55little girl nearly 23 years ago. This story is not only a
- 32:02disturbing look into the depths of what the human being is
- 32:06capable of doing and imagining, but also the psychology of a
- 32:12cult. The want to be a part of
- 32:15something bigger than yourself. The longing for a purpose, the
- 32:20willingness to do whatever you were told.
- 32:24Although brutal, I do think this story was both captivating as
- 32:29well as incredibly sorrowful. I hope it can serve as a
- 32:33testament to cults and their potential to harm people in and
- 32:38out of them. And may we all learn these
- 32:40lessons the easy way rather than the hard way.
- 32:45For now, all I can do is wish Jennifer Wendorff and all of the
- 32:50families of those involved peace and that eventually their scars
- 32:55of the trauma perpetrated by the Kentucky vampire clan will
- 33:00eventually heal, but only time will tell.
