- 0:01Welcome to the doctor-turned-health-coach podcast.
- 0:05My name is Dr. Ashori. Today we're going to talk about some of the clients I have.
- 0:11And as you can imagine, as a health coach, I see all kinds.
- 0:16There are people who can seemingly make any decision. They are incredibly motivated,
- 0:22and they can exercise when they need to.
- 0:26They can eat all the right foods. And then, of course, I have clients who just
- 0:31have such a hard time organizing their thoughts, making the right decisions.
- 0:37They're just so frustrated with some things that are just seemingly very easy for others.
- 0:45As a physician, as a family medicine physician, of course, in my medical practice,
- 0:49I see patients who have a lot of lifestyle diseases.
- 0:53And oftentimes, we can say that, well, if they were able to make some different
- 1:00choices, they likely would have a much better outcome.
- 1:03But we have to be careful because there can be some level of judgment there.
- 1:09And that's usually not helpful for anyone, right? It's not good for the doctor.
- 1:14It's not good for the patient.
- 1:18And in my health coaching practice, the three traits that I've seen,
- 1:22that I think we can learn from, from some of these seemingly most motivated individuals,
- 1:30include, the first one is that they know how to retrain their taste buds.
- 1:36Don't worry, we'll get into that.
- 1:38Number two, they make it really easy for themselves to make the better choices.
- 1:43And number three, they're often not very critical of themselves.
- 1:50There's not a lot of self-deprecating thoughts, right?
- 1:55They don't criticize themselves if things don't go according to plan.
- 2:01So starting with the first one taste buds why am i mentioning taste buds well
- 2:05there's a whole industry designed and created to make it it's their mission
- 2:11to ensure that we eat as much,
- 2:16of process of these processed foods that are available as possible and that
- 2:20often leads to overeating too much salt intake too much sugar intake blood glucose
- 2:27problems you name it and And so that industry, the food industry,
- 2:31knows how to manipulate our taste buds.
- 2:35Some of my clients who are very good at this, they know that they themselves
- 2:40can, if somebody else can retrain their taste buds, they themselves can train
- 2:45their taste buds. And that's exactly what they do.
- 2:48Over time, when they realize, oh, here's a problem, looks like I'm getting too
- 2:52much salt, I'm having too much sugar, I'm really dependent on sugar.
- 2:57What I'm going to do for a while is I'm just going to have regular oats.
- 3:02I'm going to make it not that exciting yes, in the beginning I'm just going to have some,
- 3:09bland oats maybe I'll put a little bit of salt in it oh, maybe I'll toast the
- 3:13oats a little bit okay, that's doable I do that long enough and all of a sudden
- 3:19that food is very palatable and enjoyable and you look forward to it,
- 3:23then you kind of start bit by bit adding in a little bit of cinnamon,
- 3:28adding in some hemp seeds, or adding in whatever you like. Maybe it's cardamom.
- 3:33And you create that taste profile that you enjoy.
- 3:37And what they do is they avoid the overstimulation from tastes that are salty, umami, fried, right?
- 3:47All of these, very sweet, of course.
- 3:52Maybe it takes them three months, maybe it takes them six months,
- 3:55but I can tell you that some of my patients who used to have coffee and creamer and sugar,
- 4:02now if they had that same thing, they would just pretty much throw up because
- 4:06they're so accustomed to this
- 4:08black coffee or their tea, and that's the retraining of their taste buds.
- 4:14They've made it intentionally a mission to retrain their taste buds.
- 4:18What else can we learn from this group?
- 4:23One of the aspects of my
- 4:26clients that makes them successful in their health coaching
- 4:29journey to achieve the more ideal version of their health is that they have
- 4:35these daily habits maybe they go to bed at a certain time they make sure that
- 4:41they're getting their seven to ten hours of sleep yes a lot of people get 10
- 4:46hours of sleep there's nothing wrong with that,
- 4:49and they go to the gym when they should they
- 4:52exercise when they should they go for a walk when they should oftentimes
- 4:57they achieve this because their entire day is sort of planned around these things
- 5:03these are the individuals who tend to prioritize their health they tend to prioritize
- 5:09certain things more than others so for example if if.
- 5:15Fun times with their friends and having beers out was their priority,
- 5:19they would make that a priority.
- 5:21They would get their job done as soon as possible.
- 5:23They would pick a bar that is as close to their job as possible so that they
- 5:28can maximize the time with their friends.
- 5:30They would have a perfect list of their favorite beers and topics they would discuss.
- 5:35They would bring playing cards so that there would always be something fun to do.
- 5:40When health is their priority, it's the same thing.
- 5:43They know they even they even choose their job
- 5:47and where they work strategically so that they have time to do the activities
- 5:52they like if it's running they're going to pick the right running shoes for
- 5:57the right time in the year to pick the right location so that they can go for
- 6:02a quick job even if it's for 10 minutes they're going to make sure that they get it done.
- 6:08When it's when it's about eating eating healthy they
- 6:12don't they're okay with going out to dinner with
- 6:15friends socializing absolutely but they know strategically what dishes to order
- 6:21what changes they can make what they can bring with themselves if they need
- 6:24to to add a little bit extra taste to their to their bland dishes that are often
- 6:30available in restaurants for people who are more health conscious.
- 6:33Or maybe they'll grab something quick to eat at home so that they're not starving
- 6:36and then they can get that smaller dish in the restaurant.
- 6:41Sleep is another big one. A lot of my clients, especially with kids,
- 6:45especially with young kids, tend to have a hard time securing that protected
- 6:50time that you need, those couple of hours before sleep that you can actually
- 6:54wind down so that you can fall asleep.
- 6:57Because as we know, or it's important to know, that 80% of sleep problems often
- 7:03are traced back to sleep hygiene, which we can call sleep habits.
- 7:09Securing, protecting that time before you go to bed is one of the best ways
- 7:14to make sure that you get great sleep.
- 7:19And then the final one is the mindset. Anytime we do something that we shouldn't
- 7:24or we think we could have done something better,
- 7:27it's common and it's normal to have that self-criticizing talk, that background talk.
- 7:36I've found in my health coaching clients who are very successful with their
- 7:39overall health strategies, they don't have that.
- 7:42Of course, there can be many extremes of it. Some people are more on the narcissistic
- 7:47side and they believe everything they do is correct.
- 7:49But most of the clients I have just believe in themselves and they know that
- 7:53they can only do their best.
- 7:55When something doesn't go according to plan, they can compartmentalize that and let it go.
- 8:01And they focus on the next day. They almost never will go one or two days,
- 8:06more than one or two days, losing their momentum, their streak.
- 8:11If it fails, they can hold space for themselves, they can love themselves,
- 8:15and they get right back on the horse, as they say.
- 8:18So guys, these are the three things that I think have been incredibly helpful
- 8:22for my clients. I'd love to hear what's worked for you.
