- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.

- 0:26Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:30Service, and Love.
- 0:33I want you to take a minute and
- 0:34imagine your morning routine at work.
- 0:37How do you get started?
- 0:38If you work from home, do you sit
- 0:41down at your desk, open up your laptop
- 0:43or computer?
- 0:44If you work in a specific building, how
- 0:46do you enter the building?
- 0:48What happens between when you get inside and
- 0:50when you get to your workstation or your
- 0:51desk?
- 0:52What are those steps of your routine?
- 0:56We are creatures of habit, and we often
- 0:58fall into routines and habits without even intending
- 1:00to.
- 1:02Henry David Thoreau, one of the transcendentalist writers
- 1:04in the 19th century, he famously wrote about
- 1:07this in his book Walden, where he talks
- 1:09about his experience kind of living out in
- 1:11the woods near this pond called Walden.
- 1:14Here's some of what he says.
- 1:16It is remarkable how easily and insensibly we
- 1:19fall into a particular route and make a
- 1:21beaten track for ourselves.
- 1:22I had not lived there a week before
- 1:24my feet wore a path from my door
- 1:26to the pondside, and though it is five
- 1:28or six years since I trod it, it
- 1:29is still quite distinct.
- 1:31It is true I fear that others may
- 1:33have fallen into it and so helped to
- 1:35keep it open.
- 1:36The surface of the earth is soft and
- 1:38impressible by the feet of men, and so
- 1:39with the paths which the mind travels.
- 1:42How worn and dusty then must be the
- 1:44highways of the world.
- 1:45How deep the ruts of tradition and conformity.
- 1:50Now I'm a little bit more of a
- 1:51traditionalist than Henry David Thoreau is.
- 1:54I tend to think that our capacity to
- 1:56form habits is a feature of human experience
- 1:58rather than a bug.
- 2:00But what I appreciate about what Henry David
- 2:02Thoreau is saying is that when we do
- 2:04it, as we just sort of fall into
- 2:08a habit without really thinking about it, I
- 2:11think it can be really helpful to be
- 2:13intentional about our habits because our habits are
- 2:17a big part of how our character is
- 2:19formed.
- 2:19Even simple habits that might not seem that
- 2:22dramatic can shape our personality and even our
- 2:25capacity to live life with God.
- 2:28And we see this in scripture.
- 2:29So for example, going to the Torah, Deuteronomy,
- 2:33there's this famous passage called the Shema that
- 2:35says that God is one.
- 2:37And I'm going to read that, but then
- 2:38also what it says afterwards about how the
- 2:41teaching of the Torah can intersect with everyday
- 2:43life.
- 2:44So this is Deuteronomy chapter six, starting in
- 2:46verse four.
- 2:48Here, O Israel, the Lord our God, the
- 2:50Lord is one.
- 2:51You shall love the Lord your God with
- 2:52all your heart and with all your soul
- 2:54and with all your might.
- 2:56And these words that I command you today
- 2:58shall be on your heart.
- 3:00You shall teach them diligently to your children
- 3:02and shall talk of them when you sit
- 3:03in your house and when you walk by
- 3:05the way and when you lie down and
- 3:06when you rise, you shall bind them as
- 3:08a sign on your hand and they shall
- 3:10be as frontlets between your eyes.
- 3:12You shall write them on the doorposts of
- 3:14your house and on your gates.
- 3:18Okay, so what is the Torah saying?
- 3:20It's saying that scripture is so rich.
- 3:23The words that I command you today shall
- 3:24be on your heart.
- 3:25And then it kind of unfolds.
- 3:26How do you get them on your heart?
- 3:27How do you get these words of God,
- 3:29of his teaching on your heart?
- 3:31Well, by kind of integrating them with the
- 3:33flow of your everyday life.
- 3:34So this is in a context where parents
- 3:36have children.
- 3:36So he says, you shall teach them diligently
- 3:38to your children and shall talk of them
- 3:40when you sit in your house.
- 3:41So when you're at your home, have some
- 3:43time in your domestic life for the word
- 3:46of God, when you walk by the way,
- 3:48so when you're traveling and somehow incorporate the
- 3:50word of God into your traveling and when
- 3:51you lie down and when you rise, so
- 3:53your habits of going to sleep and waking
- 3:54up in the morning.
- 3:55In other words, in your routines of life,
- 3:57in the midst of your everyday life experience,
- 4:00whatever it is, put God's words right in
- 4:02the middle of that in some way.
- 4:05And the Jewish tradition has embraced this teaching
- 4:07very literally.
- 4:09That final statement, you shall bind them as
- 4:11a sign on your hand and they shall
- 4:13be as front ones between your eyes.
- 4:15Certain traditions evolved what are called phylacteries, which
- 4:17are like little bands that you literally wear
- 4:19on your hands or on your forehead with
- 4:21a little bit of the Torah inside them
- 4:22on a scroll.
- 4:24Similarly, that final verse, you shall write them
- 4:26on the doorposts of your house and on
- 4:27your gates.
- 4:28There's a tradition.
- 4:29You may have seen this if you've been
- 4:30in a Jewish home or synagogue or temple
- 4:32where there's a little container, it's like a
- 4:35cylinder that's on the doorpost.
- 4:37Usually it's on the right hand side at
- 4:38a bit of an angle and that's called
- 4:40a mezuzah.
- 4:40And that has actually these verses from the
- 4:43Torah inside of it and sometimes some similar
- 4:44verses from Deuteronomy chapter 11.
- 4:47And it's frequent for a Jewish person to
- 4:49just touch it when they walk through a
- 4:50doorway.
- 4:51Now what is that?
- 4:52That is a really practical expression of exactly
- 4:55what this verse is talking about.
- 4:57Whenever you walk through a doorway, just that
- 4:59little reminder of the word of God.
- 5:01Now that could be practiced in a legalistic
- 5:03way where we think, oh, if we don't
- 5:05touch it, then somehow we're under God's judgment
- 5:07or that's not the idea.
- 5:09It's an embodied practical expression of this teaching
- 5:13though, somehow put all this stuff into your
- 5:16everyday life, have it be part and parcel
- 5:18of your routines and your habits.
- 5:21And we see different people practicing this in
- 5:24different ways, both in scripture and throughout church
- 5:27history.
- 5:28So in scripture, the context that the Torah
- 5:30was speaking to was kind of like your
- 5:32life as a Jewish community.
- 5:33But then what happens when you're displaced from
- 5:35that community, like during the period of the
- 5:37Babylonian exile?
- 5:38Well, let's look at Daniel.
- 5:40He was one of those people who was
- 5:41displaced during the exile.
- 5:44And what's he doing while he's over there
- 5:46in Babylon and Persia doing life, doing his
- 5:50routines?
- 5:51This is Daniel chapter 6 verse 10.
- 5:56Daniel went into his house where he had
- 5:58windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem.
- 6:01He got down on his knees three times
- 6:02a day and prayed and gave thanks before
- 6:05his God as he had done previously.
- 6:08Okay, so Daniel has a habit, right?
- 6:10It says as he has done previously, this
- 6:12is kind of an ongoing thing in his
- 6:13life where he has three times a day
- 6:16where he goes and he prays and he
- 6:17prays with his windows open toward Jerusalem.
- 6:19So his heart is kind of oriented towards
- 6:21that symbolic place of God's presence.
- 6:25Daniel has figured out a way, even when
- 6:27he's displaced from the community that would prioritize
- 6:30these things, to have a kind of personal
- 6:33rhythm, a personal routine of prayer at set
- 6:36times so that that's continuing to shape his
- 6:38heart and draw his heart towards God, toward
- 6:40the community of God.
- 6:42Now there is a word for this that
- 6:44kind of evolved in the Christian tradition and
- 6:46that word is liturgy.
- 6:48Comes from the Greek, it literally means the
- 6:49work of the people and it refers to
- 6:52this idea of kind of like set times
- 6:54of prayer or specific prayers that are prayed
- 6:57at different times and it actually predates the
- 6:59church.
- 6:59It was practiced within the Jewish community even
- 7:01before Jesus' time.
- 7:03Jesus himself probably followed the Jewish liturgy in
- 7:06his life, praying certain prayers at certain times
- 7:08of day and at certain festivals throughout the
- 7:10year.
- 7:11So this is a very biblical idea that
- 7:12we would have a liturgy, a kind of
- 7:14set of routines.
- 7:15Now at the same time, again, the biblical
- 7:19teaching about the relationship between law and grace,
- 7:21we don't need to have a legalistic approach
- 7:22to liturgy where you have to do this
- 7:24liturgy at this exact time or else.
- 7:26Rather, there's wisdom here that we can adopt
- 7:30a kind of liturgy for our lives and
- 7:33this is what I really want to say
- 7:34is you already have a liturgy for your
- 7:36life.
- 7:37That routine that you thought through at the
- 7:39beginning of your workday, that's a liturgy.
- 7:41That's a work of the people.
- 7:43That's your routine that you have in your
- 7:45life.
- 7:46So you already are liturgical.
- 7:47You already have work, routine, habits, patterns that
- 7:51you're wearing.
- 7:51As Thoreau would say, you already have tracks
- 7:53that you've worn in the grass and paths
- 7:55that you're just kind of following out of
- 7:56habit.
- 7:57Could we get intentional about that in terms
- 8:00of making our liturgy something that's conducive to
- 8:04formation and Christlike character?
- 8:07There are different examples of this throughout Christian
- 8:09history.
- 8:09In the Middle Ages, for example, certain laborers
- 8:12would form what were called guilds.
- 8:13For example, there was like a stonemasons guild.
- 8:16So people whose work was to carve stones
- 8:19for buildings and other projects, they would be
- 8:22part of a community that would not just
- 8:23work but also have habits of prayer in
- 8:25that community.
- 8:27So thinking about your work context, you might
- 8:30be in a predominantly Christian work context, like
- 8:32if you work at a church or at
- 8:33a non-profit, and there might be an
- 8:36opportunity for you to take a kind of
- 8:37guild-like approach to your routines of work.
- 8:40Is there some way for you all as
- 8:42Christians who are working together to have a
- 8:46rhythm of your prayer in community that helps
- 8:48all of you stay connected to Jesus throughout
- 8:51the day?
- 8:53Different traditions and workplaces handle this differently.
- 8:55When I went to a Christian college, we
- 8:57had chapel three times a week, and it
- 8:59was required.
- 9:00And I'm really glad it was required because
- 9:01it didn't let the perfectionist in me say,
- 9:03oh, I should do my homework instead.
- 9:04It's like, nope, got to show up because
- 9:06it's required.
- 9:06But that meant that I had a community
- 9:09liturgy I was participating in Monday, Wednesday, Friday,
- 9:12every week of worship.
- 9:13That was a huge part of my formation
- 9:15experience at college.
- 9:16In some ways, I think that what I
- 9:17experienced in those chapel services is just as
- 9:20important or even more important than what I
- 9:21accomplished in my formal academic studies because it
- 9:24was the people of God gathered for worship,
- 9:27for prayer, for receiving teaching from the Scripture.
- 9:29That formed and shaped me in a really
- 9:31rich way.
- 9:32And honestly, I miss that rhythm.
- 9:33I would love to have a rhythm where
- 9:34I could somehow attend chapel three times a
- 9:36week, plus what I do for church on
- 9:38Sundays.
- 9:39Now, obviously, I like church.
- 9:40I'm a church guy.
- 9:40But I'm not saying you have to have
- 9:42chapel three times a week at your Christian
- 9:43nonprofit.
- 9:44But is there some way that you could
- 9:46kind of build that that guild-like habit
- 9:49of our work and our prayer can go
- 9:51together?
- 9:51We can be intentional rather than insensible about
- 9:55the habits that we're forming, the routines that
- 9:58are shaping us as we do our work
- 10:00every day.
- 10:01Now, on the flip side, if you don't
- 10:03work in a Christian context at all, if
- 10:05you work in a secular environment, you might
- 10:07be more like Daniel.
- 10:08You might be in an environment that's actually
- 10:10pushing back against any sort of sense of
- 10:12the presence of God, or at least simply
- 10:15that's not on the radar of the leaders
- 10:17or how they structure the workday or anything
- 10:19like that.
- 10:19In our last episode where Pastor Daniel Small
- 10:22from Christ Community Church shared, he talked about
- 10:25how when he was working as a consultant,
- 10:27he found that kind of the rhythm and
- 10:28the situation and the expectations of his work
- 10:30really amped up his anxiety.
- 10:32Well, that was a kind of liturgy.
- 10:34There was a liturgy in his workplace, even
- 10:37a secular workplace, that kind of was deforming
- 10:40him towards anxiety.
- 10:41What did he do?
- 10:42He pushed back.
- 10:43He figured out, okay, I'm going to adopt
- 10:45a liturgy of going on this walk and
- 10:48praying and having that just be kind of
- 10:50a checkpoint in my day to push back
- 10:52against this and to welcome the presence of
- 10:53God.
- 10:54Again, a great example of similarly to Daniel
- 10:57doing this while he's in exile.
- 10:58When you're in an environment that isn't going
- 11:00to foster connection with God, you can still
- 11:02take ownership to say, okay, I'm going to
- 11:04establish my own private liturgy to honor God
- 11:08and to bring my heart back around to
- 11:09him, even if I don't have the advantage
- 11:10of a kind of guild-like community shared
- 11:13liturgy fostering that.
- 11:15So I would encourage you to think about,
- 11:17okay, what can I personally do so that
- 11:20my liturgy is intentional?
- 11:22So that my liturgy of my workday is
- 11:25helping form me more toward Christ-like character.
- 11:29A couple recommendations here.
- 11:31One is to start small.
- 11:33Don't go crazy with a whiteboard and write
- 11:35down a hundred different things that you're going
- 11:36to do every week to foster a new
- 11:39rhythm of life with Jesus in the workplace.
- 11:40That's not a good way to start.
- 11:41Start simple.
- 11:43Maybe take inspiration from the mezuzah.
- 11:44Is there a prayer you can pray when
- 11:46you walk in the door of your workplace
- 11:48or of your home office?
- 11:50For me, I like praying the prayer, the
- 11:52Jesus prayer that I've shared in another episode,
- 11:54Lord Jesus Christ, son of the living God,
- 11:57have mercy on me, a sinner.
- 11:59It's really short, simple prayer, and it just
- 12:01orients me.
- 12:02I'm dependent on the mercy of God in
- 12:04this work, just like in everything else.
- 12:06Do you have a routine where you can
- 12:08pray that prayer as you begin your workday
- 12:10or as you end your workday or when
- 12:12you go on lunch?
- 12:13There's lots of creativity here, which is the
- 12:15great thing, again, because we're not bound by
- 12:16a kind of legalism.
- 12:17We have flexibility.
- 12:18We have room for creativity to figure out
- 12:20what's going to work for me to kind
- 12:23of structure my day to keep drawing my
- 12:26heart back toward God.
- 12:28So that's the first thing is exercise some
- 12:30creativity, but start small, start simple.
- 12:32Don't go don't go bonkers with it.
- 12:34Better to do something small and simple and
- 12:36get it consistent than to be really ambitious
- 12:39and then give up on the project after,
- 12:41you know, a few days or a couple
- 12:41of weeks.
- 12:42So that's my first recommendation is that you
- 12:44keep it simple.
- 12:45My second recommendation is, is there any way
- 12:47to invite somebody else into it?
- 12:49So even if you're in a secular workplace,
- 12:50do you have a co-worker who's also
- 12:52a follower of Jesus?
- 12:53Could you have a monthly prayer time together?
- 12:56Again, maybe not something super intense like every
- 12:58single week, but just some sort of touch
- 13:00point where you're kind of bringing that guild
- 13:03-like posture to the work you're doing together
- 13:05as believers in the workplace.
- 13:07And I get it.
- 13:08It can be hard to fit these things
- 13:10in.
- 13:10We had a gathering like this at the
- 13:12food bank where I work that some people
- 13:14started kind of off the books, but it
- 13:16was always at like 730 AM on Monday
- 13:17morning and I didn't need to be at
- 13:19work that early on Monday morning.
- 13:20So I didn't make it that often.
- 13:22I get there and maybe see them coming
- 13:25out of the prayer room and I'd be
- 13:26like, Hey guys.
- 13:28And so like, I get it.
- 13:29It's hard to fit these things in.
- 13:31But the good news is we're working with
- 13:35the way God designed us to work.
- 13:36Again, habit is a feature, not a bug.
- 13:39Our capacity to build habit is a feature,
- 13:42not a bug.
- 13:42So by figuring out a way to put
- 13:44prayer and awareness of the word of God
- 13:47and just orienting our hearts towards God into
- 13:49our habits and our routines, we're actually working
- 13:51with the way that God designed us.
- 13:53So it's not something that we have to
- 13:55consciously cram in every single day, but instead
- 13:57is something that just sort of breathes there
- 13:59as part of our natural habit and our
- 14:01natural routine.
- 14:02So over time, once these habits are established,
- 14:04both individually and with other people, they're just
- 14:07there and you can just sort of rest
- 14:08in them and they're helping you.
- 14:10They're helping you draw close to God.
- 14:12So that's my kind of plug for being
- 14:15conscious and intentional about liturgy in your workday.
- 14:19If you're interested in more resources for that,
- 14:21there's a lot that you can find online.
- 14:23Just one brief resource I would recommend is
- 14:25a book called Every Moment Holy, and it
- 14:28has little prayers to pray for different moments
- 14:29throughout your day.
- 14:30So just like that Deuteronomy passage said, Hey,
- 14:33when you're walking on the road, be conscious
- 14:35of the word of God.
- 14:35When you're teaching your children, make sure you're
- 14:37teaching them the word of God.
- 14:38When you're lying down, when you're waking up,
- 14:40this Every Moment Holy book has prayers for
- 14:42when you're making your morning coffee or when
- 14:44you're changing a diaper or when you're working
- 14:46on a work project.
- 14:47And so those prayers can be helpful just
- 14:50to shape, again, that sense of this work
- 14:52I'm doing right now is sacred.
- 14:55It is holy.
- 14:56God can be present here just as much
- 14:58as he is anywhere.
- 15:01Lord Jesus, thank you for your love for
- 15:03us.
- 15:03Thank you that you are faithful in the
- 15:05middle of our failures and our weaknesses.
- 15:08Help us to show intentionality.
- 15:10Help us to collaborate with you, with creativity,
- 15:13and how we can redeem the time of
- 15:16our work days.
- 15:16Make them hours and places and times full
- 15:20of your presence.
- 15:22Draw our hearts continuously to you in that
- 15:24way.
- 15:25Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 15:27do our work with you.
