- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his Word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in First Timothy
- 0:19chapter 2 verses 8 through 15. First Timothy chapter 2, verses
- 0:248 through 15. We have been walking with the
- 0:28apostle Paul and his son in the faith, Timothy, through this
- 0:32letter that Paul wrote as Timothy was in the church at
- 0:36Ephesus and Paul had a mission for him while he was there.
- 0:41Paul had started the church, but there had come some false
- 0:44teachers into that collection of believers and they were teaching
- 0:50false things and they were behaving in some bad ways.
- 0:55And that's going to be a bit of what we're looking at today.
- 0:58Last episode we looked at our call to prayer for those that
- 1:03are in government and authority so that we can lead a quiet and
- 1:07peaceful life and all godliness and honesty so that we can share
- 1:12our faith, so that the gospel can go out, so that people can
- 1:16be saved because that is the Lord's desire.
- 1:19As we would read even in Second Peter 3, God is not willing that
- 1:22anyone would perish, but that everyone would come to
- 1:26repentance. And in verse #7 Paul said the
- 1:32gospel message. This was why I was appointed as
- 1:37a herald, an apostle, and a teacher.
- 1:40Someone that would shout out to others about this wonderful
- 1:44truth and in connection with the gospel message.
- 1:49Here's what we read in verses 8 through 15, he says.
- 1:52Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up
- 1:57holy hands without anger or argument.
- 2:01Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing,
- 2:06with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold,
- 2:12pearls, or expensive apparel, but with good works, as is
- 2:17proper for women who profess to worship God.
- 2:21A woman is to learn quietly with full submission.
- 2:25I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man.
- 2:29Instead she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then
- 2:34Eve, and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and
- 2:39transgressed. But she will be saved through
- 2:42childbearing if they continue in faith, love and holiness with
- 2:47good sense. OK, now if you are anything like
- 2:53me, you're like, oh man, here's a doozy.
- 2:55What in the world is going on? This particular portion of
- 2:59scripture is one that has been the it's been the source of
- 3:05content for tons of books, theological systems, countless
- 3:13podcast episodes and articles and all sorts of things.
- 3:17My goal and my prayer today is that even as we're walking
- 3:23through this in Tabernacle talk that I'd make what the point of
- 3:27the passage is, the point of what we're talking about.
- 3:32There's a lot of specific applications and thoughts that a
- 3:36person could go over or draw out from this passage.
- 3:41And part of the difficulty in these particular verses,
- 3:45especially the end section about women and teaching and authority
- 3:51and all of that, is that there has been great abuse of this
- 3:59passage at times by people and a degradation of women made in the
- 4:07image of God indwelt by the Holy Spirit that that people have
- 4:13overstepped some bounds on what these verses mean.
- 4:17On the flip side, there are many people today that would say, oh,
- 4:21well, listen, Paul wrote the letter of first Timothy.
- 4:25And so it doesn't really matter what Paul says.
- 4:29You know, Jesus didn't say these words.
- 4:31And so I don't have to listen to it, which would fly right in the
- 4:35face of the fact that Scripture is not at its essence the words
- 4:41of man, though mankind wrote it. But we would echo the testimony
- 4:47of Paul in Second Timothy 3 and Peter's declaration to us in
- 4:57first Peter or in second Peter one that the words of Scripture
- 5:02were given to us from the pen and hand in mind of man through
- 5:09the Holy Spirit of God's work. That it is God breathed and that
- 5:15what we have is not simply one guy's thoughts or here across
- 5:21all of Scripture, 40 guys thoughts.
- 5:23But this is what God wanted us to hear and to know.
- 5:28And so we need to, even as we approach these verses say God,
- 5:32whatever you declare is good and is right.
- 5:36And so it doesn't matter if I don't like it.
- 5:40What matters is what you said. Now we want to understand it
- 5:44rightly. And so that's what we're going
- 5:45to head into right now. I'll I'll, you know, put all my
- 5:48cards on the table right at 1st. I believe the significance of
- 5:56this passage, the goal of what Paul wants Timothy first here
- 6:02and then us to understand is that there are right and wrong
- 6:06ways to behave in church, that there is a way that the church
- 6:12is supposed to operate. And we'll see some of the ways
- 6:17that in Ephesus, the church was not operating that way.
- 6:23And so that's what Paul is speaking against.
- 6:25He is speaking against a wrong way of, if you will, doing
- 6:31church. So let's dive first into verse
- 6:34#8 and as we walk through, I think you'll see some of that as
- 6:38we walk together. He says, therefore I want the
- 6:41men, because of the gospel in every place, to pray, lifting up
- 6:47holy hands without anger or argument.
- 6:52So Paul here does not start by saying, here's all of the things
- 6:55that I really dislike about the women.
- 6:58He starts here by saying, men, you have a place of authority
- 7:04and importance within your homes, within your churches,
- 7:09within society. And he says, if you want to, if
- 7:14you will, if you want to be the head of something, start by
- 7:18leading and directing and being the head of your own emotions
- 7:25and being in charge of your mouth and your words.
- 7:30A lot of guys struggle with these two things.
- 7:37They're angry. They are angry people.
- 7:41Sometimes that can result in physical violence in worst case
- 7:46scenarios against people, but then very often in some other
- 7:50ways, violence directed against things, smashing things,
- 7:55breaking things, punching holes and things.
- 7:58And that is totally against the gospel.
- 8:02It is totally against the Holy Spirit living and moving inside
- 8:06of us. And so I want to encourage you,
- 8:08if you are a man listening to this or watching this, choose
- 8:14that if you are Holy Spirit indwelt, if you are a Christian,
- 8:19if you are on your way to heaven, if God the Savior has
- 8:22redeemed you, then choose that your life is going to be
- 8:26categorized by prayer and by a innocence, A cleanness to who
- 8:35you are, not by your anger and your arguments.
- 8:40So as opposed to anger, you pray instead of being furious at
- 8:46another person for what they say or what they didn't say or what
- 8:50they did or what they didn't did.
- 8:52You are going to be categorized by prayer that someone goes, all
- 8:56right, well, how would you describe Brian, man?
- 8:57He's just angry all the time or no, Brian is praying all the
- 9:02time. You know, I, I mentioned, hey,
- 9:05there's this thing that I really dislike in politics and Brian
- 9:08said, hey, let's pray together about that or I have this health
- 9:12need. And Brian went, oh, let's pray
- 9:14about that. That's the kind of person that I
- 9:16want to be. That's the person that I need to
- 9:19be, that I need to be pushing myself more and more towards.
- 9:23Because the good, if you will, the good antidote to an
- 9:28unbiblical, unproductive anger is prayer.
- 9:34How many times have we been mad at someone when the appropriate
- 9:39response should have been, no, I'm going to pray for that
- 9:41person. And you know, even as we went
- 9:44through book 5 of Psalms, there's several of theme
- 9:46regulatory prayers. We can bring our anger to the
- 9:48Lord and be like, alright, God, I am furious with this person
- 9:52right now. I can't believe that they said
- 9:54this. And so God, I'm bringing this to
- 9:56you and I'm asking for you to bring justice, to bring
- 9:59vengeance. But also I recognize even as I'm
- 10:01talking with you, that you are the God who forgave me.
- 10:04And so I need to forgive them. The antidote to our anger.
- 10:09There can be many anecdote antidotes, but at least one is
- 10:13prayer to the Lord. So he says.
- 10:15I want the men to pray everywhere in every place.
- 10:19Don't ever feel like there is a place where prayer is off limit
- 10:23for you. I have a corner store over by
- 10:27over where by I over where over by where I live.
- 10:33I apologize I just got stuck on that loop and couldn't get out.
- 10:38I have a corner store over by where I live and the man that is
- 10:44the business owner there is a Muslim individual.
- 10:50And so five times a day he actually locks his store door
- 10:55and he prays and he prays for 10 minutes there.
- 11:00And I wonder, or I, I've been amazed seeing that at times, you
- 11:07know, he'll lose out on business because people will come while
- 11:12he is praying and they won't be able to get into the door.
- 11:18But he's serious about his faith and his God and he chooses to
- 11:24pray. And I wonder for us, we are the
- 11:28children of the living God, of the one true God.
- 11:33How shy are we about praying, about praying with people?
- 11:39How often do we shirk the tremendous privilege that we
- 11:43have to come boldly before the throne of grace and ask for
- 11:47God's help? So here, instead of being angry,
- 11:51we pray. And instead of arguing with
- 11:54others, He encourages us to lift up holy hands that we here.
- 12:01It's a picture. This isn't necessarily saying,
- 12:03OK, if I do this with my hands for those watching or for those
- 12:07listening on audio, I'm physically lifting my hands up.
- 12:11It's not that if I raise my hands, I'm holier.
- 12:14And if my hands are down, I am less holy.
- 12:18It is a picture of the fact that God, you see my hands
- 12:22metaphorically, figuratively, and God, I need you to in the
- 12:29same vein as like Psalm 139, God, search me, know me, try me
- 12:33and see if there's any wicked way in me and lead me in the
- 12:37everlasting way that that's what we do, that we say.
- 12:41God, I don't have to. I don't have to convince this
- 12:45other person. I don't have to argue with this
- 12:47other person because God, you see me, you know me, you know my
- 12:51heart. And so God, I'm bringing this
- 12:54situation to you. And here Paul does not say, I
- 12:58want the pastors to pray everywhere lifting up holy hands
- 13:02without anger or argument. He says, I want the men in every
- 13:07place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument.
- 13:12If you're a guy, you have this responsibility.
- 13:15You are to be a prayer warrior. We can do lots of stuff after we
- 13:23have prayed, but we can truly do nothing meaningful until we have
- 13:28prayed. OK then verses 9 and 10.
- 13:33This is the easier part of this section, he says.
- 13:36Also the women, So the guys have this encouragement to pray, to
- 13:43not operate in anger or argument.
- 13:46Says the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing
- 13:51with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold,
- 13:57pearls or expensive apparel, but with good works, as is proper
- 14:02for women who profess to worship God.
- 14:06Much could be sad about like modest apparel, how we tend to
- 14:10talk about it today. That is how much is OK for
- 14:15people to see of your body or different things like that.
- 14:21That is not what Paul has in mind here.
- 14:24That is not what he's instructing you about
- 14:26specifically. What we read is there were
- 14:29people dressing in lavishly expensive and rich ways.
- 14:36This would have been very commonplace for the priestesses
- 14:41there at the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, that the like
- 14:47richest of the rich, they would have some of their virgin
- 14:51daughters that were there at that temple and they would be
- 14:56totally decked out with incredibly expensive clothing.
- 15:02Paul here tells Timothy, let the Ephesian women know, Yeah,
- 15:07that's how Artemis does her stuff.
- 15:10But God, our God does not care about how expensive your
- 15:15clothing is. There was a, a phrase that I
- 15:19think kind of took took off in the late 1800s or early 1900s
- 15:27and the thought went something like this.
- 15:29You need to quote UN quote, dress your best for God.
- 15:34And would you show up to the White House in, you know, a, a
- 15:40tank top and shorts? No, So you need to dress your
- 15:44best for God when you come to church.
- 15:48Now, different avenues of like respects, cultural elements,
- 15:561000 different things could be said on the clothing that we
- 16:00wear to church. But at the very least church is
- 16:04not a place where you go to flaunt your wealth through the
- 16:08clothing that you wear. And that goes on multiple ends.
- 16:12So I've seen some people that they wear ridiculously expensive
- 16:18nice, you know, a suit or a three piece suit or something
- 16:22like that that is incredibly expensive and people might look
- 16:27at that and say man, that that's really expensive.
- 16:29I feel like that's not the modest apparel that's being
- 16:34talked about here or in a couple of other places.
- 16:37The same thing though, can be true for people that they wear
- 16:40extremely expensive clothing that is more popular or more,
- 16:47I'll say more stylish in today's day and age.
- 16:50So you read or hear about the preachers that have, you know, a
- 16:55$10,000 watch and they've got, you know, a $3000 pair of, you
- 17:03know, very fancy tennis shoes from whatever big name brand
- 17:07that you would find. Tennis shoes isn't the right
- 17:09word. But you guys know what I'm
- 17:10talking about. Or they might wear a, you know,
- 17:15T-shirt from Gucci and they'd have a jacket from Balenciaga.
- 17:20And so even though they don't look as quote UN quote formal as
- 17:25the person in a suit and tie, their clothing can be much more
- 17:29expensive. Now, I, I don't want to lay down
- 17:33any sort of definitive law. I just want to say if you see
- 17:38someone that online, you know, they purport to be a great
- 17:43teacher, but they are consistently flaunting their
- 17:46wealth, that is probably someone that you need to watch out for,
- 17:52not someone that you should be listening a lot to.
- 17:56When someone has enveloped a lot of greed and they have begun
- 18:03stocking their own cultural image through having just a lot
- 18:10of riches and clothing themselves in riches, that's a
- 18:13great indication. Maybe that's not something that
- 18:17I should spend a lot of time listening to here.
- 18:20This is what's in mind for these women, that the gospel is for
- 18:23everyone. The gospel isn't just for the
- 18:25rich. The gospel isn't just for those
- 18:27that can look their best. The gospel is for the poor.
- 18:30The gospel is for the homeless. The gospel is for those that
- 18:35have 10 million in stocks and those that have, you know, $5 in
- 18:40their bank account. The gospel is for everyone.
- 18:42And so don't come to church to flaunt your wealth.
- 18:49Yeah, now I will say this is something as Paul is telling
- 18:53Timothy that a pastor can have you know, some some teaching
- 18:59exhortation on that's what I'm doing right now is teaching you
- 19:01guys. Don't use this as a club to beat
- 19:05other people in your church with.
- 19:08Don't use it as a Ave. for slander or for gossip for others
- 19:15within your local congregation. You know, don't tell your
- 19:19spouse. Oh man, did you you see those
- 19:21shoes that he has? I bet they cost at least $50.
- 19:25Doesn't he know that you can get a $5 pair at you know the thrift
- 19:29store? Don't don't do that to people.
- 19:34This is not a legalistic thing here of if someone wears
- 19:40something nice you should tear them down for it.
- 19:43But it is something that even as I pastor this church, I want to
- 19:49be careful to recognize, like the area of the world and the
- 19:55area of Maryland that I'm in. And I want to make sure that I
- 20:02am not, if you will, I'm not dressing far above where anyone
- 20:07would feel like, OK, well, I couldn't talk to Brian.
- 20:10Like, he's way too fancy. I, I think he's, you know, way
- 20:13above my level. I want to make sure that the
- 20:16clothing that I wear is accessible, that no matter if
- 20:18someone is 80 years old or if someone is 18 years old, that
- 20:23they could feel like, OK, this is a person.
- 20:25They are wearing clothes similar to perhaps what I would wear.
- 20:31No, it might be what I wear when I go to the bank.
- 20:33It might be what I wear when I'm at, you know, a family get
- 20:37together or something. Family reunion.
- 20:40But I know there's some attainability there that we are
- 20:43part of the same family, if you will.
- 20:46We're on the same social status. And that social status is team
- 20:51Jesus. That all together, the rich and
- 20:55the poor, we come to the foot of the cross and the ground is
- 21:00level there. And instead of the riches, Paul
- 21:07says, I want the Christian women to clothe themselves with good
- 21:13works. So let yourself be known not for
- 21:17how much your dress cost. Let yourself be known by the
- 21:21good works that you do. That someone says, man, they are
- 21:25always volunteering. They are always caring for
- 21:29people. They're always speaking good
- 21:31words into people's lives. They are just always there when
- 21:35you need a shoulder to cry on. They are always ready to pray
- 21:38for you. That ought to be what typifies
- 21:40the people of God. Not anger, not arguing, not
- 21:45material wealth or goods being flaunted in the face of others.
- 21:49No, what ought to characterize us is prayer and good works.
- 21:56I'm going to shoot straight with you guys.
- 21:57It is already way too late. I cannot do verses 11 through 15
- 22:02in adequate time in this episode, so this is going to
- 22:06need to get pushed over. Part 2 is next episode and
- 22:11unfortunately for me, it is going to be over verses 11
- 22:14through 15, the most difficult part of this passage.
- 22:16So wish me luck, pray for me, and look forward to joining you
- 22:21next episode for verses 11 through 15.
