Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Cantonese with Fexingo? I thought we'd cover something practical today — the days of the week. Luna: Oh, I've been wanting to know those! I always get mixed up when someone asks me what day it is in Cantonese. Lucas: Well, let's sort that out. Days of the week are really logical in Cantonese. They all end with 期 — that's 星期, meaning 'week.' Then you add a number. Luna: So Monday is 'week one'? That makes sense. Lucas: Exactly. Monday is 星期一. Say it with me: 星期一. Luna: 星期一. Monday. Lucas: Good. Tuesday is 星期二. Tuesday — 星期二. Luna: 星期二. That's Tuesday. Lucas: Wednesday is 星期三. Wednesday — 星期三. Luna: 星期三. Wednesday. I notice it's just the number three in there. Lucas: Right. Thursday is 星期四. Thursday — 星期四. Luna: 星期四. That's Thursday. Lucas: Friday is 星期五. Friday — 星期五. Luna: 星期五. Friday. So Saturday would be 星期六? Lucas: You got it. Saturday is 星期六. Saturday — 星期六. Luna: 星期六. And Sunday? Is it 星期日? Lucas: Yes! Sunday is 星期日. Some people also say 星期天, but 星期日 is very common. Sunday — 星期日. Luna: 星期日. So let me run through them: 星期一, 星期二, 星期三, 星期四, 星期五, 星期六, 星期日. Lucas: Perfect! You nailed all seven. Let's try a little conversation. Imagine I ask you: 今日係星期幾? That means 'What day is today?' So I'd answer with the day. Lucas: Right. If today is Monday, you say: 今日係星期一. Try it. Lucas: Great. Now if it's Wednesday: 今日係星期三. Luna: 今日係星期三. Lucas: You're getting it. Let's switch it up. I'll say a day in English, you say it in Cantonese. Tuesday. Luna: 星期二. Lucas: Saturday. Luna: 星期六. Lucas: Sunday. Luna: 星期日. Lucas: Excellent. Now let's use it in a sentence about plans. That means 'I go eat dinner on Friday.' So the day comes before the verb. Lucas: Exactly. How would you say 'I go eat dinner on Wednesday'? Lucas: Perfect. You can also say 我星期一返工 — 'I go to work on Monday.' So it's really flexible. Lucas: Yes. And you know, a lot of listeners have been telling us these episodes really help them make progress with Cantonese. I'll say the English, you say Cantonese. Monday. Luna: 星期一. Lucas: Thursday. Luna: 星期四. Lucas: Sunday. Luna: 星期日. Lucas: And the question: 今日係星期幾? Luna: 今日係星期幾? That's a handy phrase. Lucas: Right. So now you can ask and answer what day it is. Try saying 'Today is Friday' in Cantonese. Lucas: Perfect. And 'Today is Tuesday'? Lucas: You've got it. Practice these seven days and the question, and you'll be set. Thanks for joining us on Learn Cantonese with Fexingo — see you next time! Luna: Bye bye!
