- 0:16And welcome to another edition of the Urantia Radio Podcast.
- 0:20I'm your humble host, Jim Watkins, and it is always good
- 0:23to have you stop by and I enjoy that you do, and I always want
- 0:27to impart something that will make your day better.
- 0:29And so on this edition of the Urantia Radio Podcast, we're
- 0:33going to talk about a subject. It's in paper 195, and it's
- 0:36sections 5-6 and seven where the revelators tell us a little bit
- 0:40about materialism and the dangers of materialism in the
- 0:43modern day. We're going to cover a lot of
- 0:47material. It's a little longer than I
- 0:49usually have as far as episodes. It takes about 40 minutes to
- 0:52read through these three sections, and I'll give you a
- 0:55clue if it's too long. Then you can take a break.
- 0:58So if you need to pause, it'll be a lot of very, very useful
- 1:02information, and it will help you understand not only the
- 1:06dangers of materialism, but what we can do to solve the problem
- 1:10of abject materialism. And the revelators went to great
- 1:14lengths to give us the tools that we need in order to
- 1:18understand exactly what we're faced against.
- 1:23Welcome to the Arancha Radio podcast, where we take a look at
- 1:26papers throughout the book and give it a little bit of analysis
- 1:30and help you perhaps understand more of what the book is saying.
- 1:34And today we're going to be talking about Paper 195, Section
- 1:385, and it's called The Modern Problem.
- 1:41Now Paper 195 is the last of the books or the papers of the
- 1:46Arancha book, and it talks a lot about it's actually sort of a
- 1:50summary history. Of what happened after Jesus
- 1:54moved on, and what happened with Christianity and what influence
- 1:59it continues to have all the way down to the modern age.
- 2:02So paper 195 begins with after Pentecost, then it goes into the
- 2:07continuing Roman influence, and then through the Dark Ages.
- 2:12And now we're at Section 5. So let's read through this
- 2:14section and we'll give some analysis to what they're trying
- 2:17to tell us. And you can read along too, on
- 2:20the screen if you like. So from Paper 195, Section 5,
- 2:26the the modern Problem, the 20th century has brought new problems
- 2:30for Christianity and all other religions to solve.
- 2:34The higher a civilization climbs, the more necessitous
- 2:38becomes the duty to quote seek first the realities of heaven in
- 2:42all of man's efforts to stabilize society and facilitate
- 2:47the solution of its material problems.
- 2:50Truth often becomes confusing and even misleading when it is
- 2:55dismembered, segregated, isolated, and too much analyzed.
- 3:00Living truth teaches the truth seeker a right only when it is
- 3:05embraced in wholeness and as a living spiritual reality, not as
- 3:10a fact of material science or an inspiration of intervening art.
- 3:16Religion is the revelation of man of his.
- 3:20Divine and eternal Destiny. Religion is a purely personal
- 3:26and spiritual experience and must forever be distinguished
- 3:30from man's others. Higher forms of thought, such as
- 3:33man's logical attitude toward the things of material reality,
- 3:38man's aesthetic appreciation of beauty contrasted with ugliness,
- 3:43man's ethical recognition of social obligations, and
- 3:47political duty. And even man's sense of human
- 3:50morality is not in and of itself religious.
- 3:54So they're emphasizing here that religion is is a purely personal
- 3:58experience and it's it's if it's viewed in this way, then
- 4:03religion is about the whole personality and not just a
- 4:06segmented part of of their their living, like going to church one
- 4:11day a week and not really giving thought in any in any given
- 4:15moment. To look at things through a
- 4:19spiritual lens, how does it benefit me?
- 4:23How does it benefit other people?
- 4:26And is it based in truth? So if you use those 3
- 4:30qualifiers, then you're applying religious living to just about
- 4:34every circumstance in your life. Religion is designed to find
- 4:39those values in the universe which call for faith, trust and
- 4:44assurance. Religion culminates in worship.
- 4:47Religion discovers for the soul those supreme values which are
- 4:51in contrast with the relative values discovered by the mind.
- 4:56Such superhuman insight can be had only through genuine
- 5:01religious experience. A lasting social system without
- 5:06a morality predicated on spiritual realities can no more
- 5:11be maintained than could the solar system without gravity.
- 5:16That's a pretty important statement.
- 5:18Do we have a Do we have a society that you think is based
- 5:25on spiritual realities or material realities to the man on
- 5:29the street? Does this person live only in
- 5:33the material world, or does he give thought to the spiritual
- 5:36realities of his soul or the future endeavors of perhaps
- 5:41eternal life? I would say that most people
- 5:43don't think in terms. Of eternal reality.
- 5:46Not today anyway. But what if we did?
- 5:49How would we treat each other differently if we took in the
- 5:53context of a cosmological universe filled with life?
- 5:58And I think when they say a lasting social system, that
- 6:02means the thread that holds a society together.
- 6:05If it's based on spiritual principles or spiritual
- 6:09realities, then it it can contain that society.
- 6:13It's a lasting. Social system and, if it's based
- 6:17on anything else, spiritual realities.
- 6:21If if those are ignored, then you cannot expect a lasting
- 6:25social system. So they say, do not try to
- 6:30satisfy the curiosity or gratify all the latent adventures
- 6:35surging within the soul in one short life in the flesh.
- 6:38Be patient, be not tempted to indulge in a lawless plunge into
- 6:44cheap. And sordid adventure.
- 6:49Harness your energies and bridal your passions.
- 6:53Be calm while you await the majestic unfolding of an endless
- 6:57career of progressive adventure and thrilling discovery.
- 7:02So you don't have to cram everything into one life unless
- 7:07that's all the life you want. And then in that case, you might
- 7:10as well do everything. What do they always tell you?
- 7:13You only live once. But here they're saying no,
- 7:16that's not the case. You don't live once, you live on
- 7:19and whatever you do here is going to matter.
- 7:22And that future is state. Isn't that what they're saying?
- 7:25Don't try to solve all the complexities.
- 7:27Don't don't throw yourself at an orgy of of satiation because you
- 7:33feel like you'll never have an opportunity.
- 7:36Now look at some of the go, the go, the right path.
- 7:41You know, stay within the rails, I think is what they're saying.
- 7:44In time, you'll have so much of a wonderful experience.
- 7:51It's even beyond today for you to even imagine and confusion
- 7:57over man's origin. Do not lose sight of his eternal
- 8:00destiny. See, forget not that Jesus loved
- 8:04even little children and that he forever made clear the great
- 8:08worth. Of human personality.
- 8:10That's an interesting statement. It's almost it's it's sort of
- 8:14where that sentence come from, right here.
- 8:16Here's right here. 195, Section 5, paragraph 11.
- 8:20And confusion over man's origins.
- 8:23In other words, where did man come from?
- 8:25We're confused about that. Is the animal evolutionary?
- 8:29Was he created? Are we the sons of Adam or the
- 8:32sons of of apes? Well, there's confusion about
- 8:36that, so don't lose sight. Of the eternal destiny.
- 8:40Don't lose sight. Doesn't matter where you're
- 8:42from, it's where you're going. And then he pulls in this this
- 8:48quote. Forget not that Jesus loved even
- 8:50little children. So in their eyes we may be
- 8:53viewed as as little children. But what what makes us worth a
- 8:57damn is the fact that we have human personality.
- 9:02That's the key. Doesn't matter where we came
- 9:04from now we're humans and we have personality.
- 9:08And there's a clear path to an eternal adventure and not just a
- 9:13material life. It says, As you view the world,
- 9:18remember that the black patches of evil which you see are shown
- 9:22against a white background of ultimate good.
- 9:25In other words, no matter how bad it is here and now, and in
- 9:29the situations that we find ourselves in, there is a better
- 9:32path. There is going to be a better
- 9:34estate. It says where there's so much
- 9:38good truth to publish and proclaim.
- 9:40Why should men dwell so much upon the evil in the world?
- 9:45And I know I'm guilty of it just because it appears to be a fact.
- 9:50The beauties of the spiritual values of truth are more
- 9:54pleasurable and uplifting than is the phenomenon of evil.
- 10:00In religion, Jesus advocated and followed the method of
- 10:04experience. Even as modern science pursues
- 10:08the technique of experiment, we find God through the leadings of
- 10:12spiritual insight. But we approach this insight of
- 10:16the soul through the love of the beautiful, the pursuit of truth,
- 10:20loyalty to duty, and the worship of divine goodness.
- 10:25But all of these values, Of all of these values, love is the
- 10:29true guide to real insight. Now we're going to jump into.
- 10:35Having established the framework, by the way, that we
- 10:38should approach our religious living knowing that we are
- 10:45living not only for the present but also for the future.
- 10:49The end goal, the eternal journey which we talked about in
- 10:53the previous podcast with regards to the Supreme Being.
- 10:58Now remember we're talking about society and how it's progressing
- 11:03in the post Jesus world. And now we get to Section 6,
- 11:07materialism. Scientists have unintentionally
- 11:11precipitate. And this is by the way, the
- 11:13only, I think, paragraph in the whole Your Ranch book that is
- 11:17about this particular age that we are in.
- 11:20Specifically, I think they're addressing the problems of
- 11:24materialism at this point because it's a serious issue.
- 11:30And the struggle right now, the ideological struggle.
- 11:33Is going on between materialism, secularism and spirituality,
- 11:39spiritual thinking. So they address head on some of
- 11:44the problems that we're having in our society today.
- 11:46Because we've become so materialistic, scientists have
- 11:51unintentionally precipitated mankind into a materialistic
- 11:55panic. They have started an unthinking
- 11:58run on the moral Bank of the ages, but this Bank of human
- 12:02experience. Has vast spiritual resources.
- 12:06It can stand the demands being made upon it.
- 12:08Only unthinking men become panicky about the spiritual
- 12:12assets of the human race. When the materialistic secular
- 12:16panic is over, the religion of Jesus will not be found
- 12:20bankrupt. The spiritual Bank of the
- 12:23Kingdom of heaven will be paying out faith, hope and moral
- 12:27security to all who draw upon it in his name.
- 12:33No matter what the apparent conflict between materialism and
- 12:37the teachings of Jesus may be, you can rest assured that in the
- 12:41ages to come, the teachings of the Master will fully triumph In
- 12:46reality, true religion cannot be involved in any controversy with
- 12:50science. It is in no way concerned with
- 12:53material things religion is simply indifferent to, but
- 12:58sympathetic with science. While it supremely concerns
- 13:02itself with the scientist, the pursuit of mere knowledge
- 13:09without the intended interpretation of wisdom and the
- 13:13spiritual insight of religious experience eventually leads to
- 13:18pessimism and human despair. A little knowledge is truly
- 13:23disconcerting. At the time of this writing, the
- 13:26worst and this was 1935. Or 19, late 30s.
- 13:31So World War Two is about to start.
- 13:33It's already kind of broken out in Europe.
- 13:36The whole world is a stir. They're saying the worst of the
- 13:40materialistic age is over. The day of a better
- 13:43understanding is already beginning to dawn.
- 13:46The higher minds of the scientific world are no longer
- 13:50wholly materialistic in their philosophy, but the rank and
- 13:54file of the people still lean in that direction.
- 13:57As a result of former teachings. But this age of physical realism
- 14:02is only a passing episode in man's life on earth.
- 14:06Modern science has left true religion untouched.
- 14:10All science has done is to destroy the childlike illusions
- 14:15of the misinterpretations of life.
- 14:18Science is a quantitative experience, religion a
- 14:22qualitative experience as regards man's life on earth.
- 14:26Science deals with phenomena, religion with origins, values
- 14:32and goals. To assign causes as an
- 14:35explanation of physical phenomena is to confess
- 14:38ignorance of ultimates, and in the end only leads the science
- 14:43is straight back to the first rate cause, the universal father
- 14:47of paradise. The violence swing from an age
- 14:52of miracles to an age of machines.
- 14:55Has proved altogether upsetting to man.
- 14:58The cleverness and dexterity of the false philosophies of
- 15:01mechanism belie their very mechanistic contentions.
- 15:05The fatalistic agility of the mind of a materialist forever
- 15:09disproves his assertion that the universe is a blind and
- 15:13purposeless energy phenomena. This is basically addressing the
- 15:18theory of The Big Bang. The Big Bang just eventuated and
- 15:23came to be at this. 1.14 or so billion years ago.
- 15:28This particular paragraph hits that head on.
- 15:33Why is that? Because the materialist thinks
- 15:36that life just came about spontaneously.
- 15:41That's a mechanistic approach. What we're not taking into
- 15:45account is the the, the, the purposelessness of it, the
- 15:52noncausation that that there's no point.
- 15:55Listen to what it says. The mechanistic naturalism of
- 16:00some supposedly educated men and the thoughtless secularism of
- 16:04the man in the street are both exclusively concerned with
- 16:07things. They are barren of all real
- 16:11values, sanctions and satisfactions of a spiritual
- 16:15nature, as well as being devoid of faith, hope and eternal
- 16:20assurances. One of the great troubles with
- 16:23modern life is that man thinks he is too busy to find time for
- 16:28spiritual meditation and religious devotion.
- 16:32Materialism reduces man to a soulless automaton and
- 16:38constitutes him merely an arithmetical symbol, finding a
- 16:43helpless place in the mathematical formula of an
- 16:47unromantic and mechanistic universe.
- 16:52But whence comes all this vast universe of mathematics without
- 16:56a master mathematician? Science may expatiate on the
- 17:01conservation of matter, but religion validates the
- 17:05conservation of men's souls. It concerns their experience
- 17:10with spiritual realities and eternal values.
- 17:15The materialistic sociologist of today surveys a community.
- 17:20That makes a report there on and leaves the people as he found
- 17:23them. 1900 years ago, unlearned Galilean surveyed Jesus, giving
- 17:30his life as a spiritual contribution to man's inner
- 17:34experience, and then went out and turned the whole Roman
- 17:37Empire upside down. But religious leaders are making
- 17:42a great mistake when they try to call modern man to spiritual
- 17:46battle with the trumpet blast. Of the Middle Ages, religion
- 17:51must provide itself with new and UpToDate slogans.
- 17:56Neither democracy nor any other political panacea will take the
- 18:01place of spiritual progress. That's a very important should
- 18:05underline that. Can I can I say that again?
- 18:08Religion must provide itself with new and UpToDate slogans,
- 18:12neither democracy nor any other political panacea.
- 18:18Will take the place of spiritual progress.
- 18:22Now they have all these parades and all these advocacy groups
- 18:25and activists. You know, we want our rights.
- 18:28We want this. We want that equity, whatever
- 18:31they're crying for. But that's not spiritual
- 18:34progress. It might be social evolution,
- 18:37but it's not really based on spiritual principles.
- 18:41False religions may represent an evasion of reality, but Jesus
- 18:46and his gospel introduce mortal man.
- 18:48To the very entrance upon an eternal reality of spiritual
- 18:53progression. To say that mind emerged from
- 18:58matter explains nothing. If the universe were merely A
- 19:01mechanism and mind were unapart from matter, we would never have
- 19:06two differing interpretations of any observed phenomena.
- 19:12The concepts of truth, beauty, and goodness are not inherent in
- 19:16either physics. Or chemistry.
- 19:19A machine cannot know, much less no truth.
- 19:24Hunger for righteousness and cherish goodness.
- 19:28Science may be physical, but the mind of the truth Discerning
- 19:32scientist is at 1 super material.
- 19:35Matter knows not truth, Neither can it love, mercy, nor delight
- 19:40in spiritual values and realities.
- 19:44Moral convictions based on spiritual enlightenment.
- 19:47And rooted in human experience, are just as real and certain as
- 19:51mathematical deductions based on physical observations.
- 19:55But on another and higher level, if men were only machines, they
- 20:00would react more or less uniformly to a material
- 20:04universe. Individuality, much less
- 20:07personality, would be nonexistent.
- 20:11So again, there. They're addressing the secular
- 20:14approach that science has towards all reality, and it's
- 20:19interesting, it's such a great quote.
- 20:21Science is concerned with reality.
- 20:23Religion is concerned with the scientist, the facts of the
- 20:29absolute mechanism of paradise at the center of the universe,
- 20:32of universes in the presence of the unqualified volition of the
- 20:37second source and center, which is the eternal sun.
- 20:40It makes forever certain that determiners are not the
- 20:43exclusive laws of the cosmos. Materialism is there, but it is
- 20:48not exclusive. Mechanism is there, but it is
- 20:53not unqualified. Determinism is there, but it is
- 20:58not alone. The finite universe of matter
- 21:02would eventually become uniform and deterministic, but for the
- 21:06combined presence of mind and spirit.
- 21:10The influence of the cosmic mind constantly injects spontaneity
- 21:16into even the material worlds. Freedom or initiative in any
- 21:20realm of existence is directly proportional to the degree of
- 21:24spiritual influence and cosmic mind control that is inhuman
- 21:30experience, the degree of the actuality of doing the Father's
- 21:34will. And so when you start out to
- 21:36find God, that is conclusive proof.
- 21:39That God has already found you. The sincere pursuit of goodness,
- 21:44beauty, and truth leads to God, and every scientific discovery
- 21:49demonstrates the existence of both freedom and uniformity in
- 21:54the universe. The discoverer was free to make
- 21:58the discovery. The thing discovered is real and
- 22:02apparently uniform, or else it could not have been known as a
- 22:07thing. So moving along, we'll just do 7
- 22:12here because it sort of wraps it up.
- 22:14This is a dressing head on. The atomized man.
- 22:17The the secularistic attitude of today's science.
- 22:23The vulnerability of materialism #7.
- 22:26How foolish it is for materialminded men to allow such
- 22:29vulnerable theories as those of the mechanistic universe to
- 22:33deprive him of the vast spiritual resources.
- 22:36Of the personal experience of true religion.
- 22:39Facts never quarrel with real spiritual faith.
- 22:42Theories may better that science should be devoted to the
- 22:46destruction of superstition rather than attempting the
- 22:49overthrow of religious faith, human belief in spiritual
- 22:54realities and divine values. That is what constitutes
- 22:58religious faith. Science should do more for man
- 23:01materially what religion does for him spiritually.
- 23:06Extend the horizon of life and enlarge his personality.
- 23:09True science can have no lasting quarrel with true religion.
- 23:14The scientific method is merely an intellectual yardstick
- 23:19wherewith to measure material adventures and physical
- 23:22achievements. But being material and wholly
- 23:24intellectual, it is utterly useless in the evaluation of
- 23:28spiritual realities and religious experiences.
- 23:33The inconsistency of the modern mechanist is this.
- 23:37If this were merely a material universe, and man only a
- 23:40machine, such a man would be wholly unable to recognize
- 23:45himself as such a machine. And likewise would would such a
- 23:50machine man be wholly unconscious of the fact of the
- 23:54existence of such a material universe, the materialistic
- 23:59dismay and despair of a mechanistic science.
- 24:02Of mechanistic science has failed to recognize the fact of
- 24:06the spirit and dwelt mind of the scientist whose very super
- 24:11material insight formulates these mistaken and self
- 24:15contradictory concepts of a materialistic universe.
- 24:20Paradise values of eternity and Infinity of truth, beauty and
- 24:24goodness are concealed within the facts of the phenomena of
- 24:29the universes of time and space. But it requires the eyes of
- 24:33faith in a spirit born mortal to detect and discern the spiritual
- 24:39values, the realistic and values, the realities and values
- 24:46of spiritual progress are not a psychological projection, a mere
- 24:51glorified Daydream of the material mind.
- 24:54Such things are the spiritual forecasts of the indwelling and
- 24:58gesture, the Spirit of God. Living in the mind of man.
- 25:03And let not your dabblings with faintly glimpsed findings of
- 25:07relativity disturb your concepts of the eternity and and Infinity
- 25:13of God. And then all your solicitations
- 25:16concerning the necessity of selfexpression do not make the
- 25:19mistake of failing to provide for a juster expression, the
- 25:25expression of God, through you, the manifestation of your real.
- 25:30And better self. If this were only a material
- 25:33universe, material man would never be able to arrive at the
- 25:36concept of a mechanistic character of such an exclusively
- 25:40material existence. This very mechanistic concept of
- 25:44the universe is in itself a nonmaterial phenomena of mind,
- 25:50and all mind is of nonmaterial origin, no matter how thoroughly
- 25:55it may appear to be material conditioned and mechanistically
- 25:59controlled. The partially evolved mental
- 26:03mechanism of mechanism of mortal mind is not over endowed with
- 26:08consistency and wisdom. Man's conceit often outruns his
- 26:14reason and eludes his logic. The very pessimism of the most
- 26:19pessimistic materialist is in and of itself sufficient proof
- 26:25that the universe of the pessimist is not wholly
- 26:28material. Both optimism and pessimism are
- 26:32concept reactions in a mind consciousness of values, or
- 26:36conscious of values as well as facts.
- 26:40If the universe were truly what the materialistic regard it to
- 26:44be, man as a human machine would then be devoid of all conscious
- 26:48recognition of that very fact without the consciousness of the
- 26:54concept of values within the spirit borne mind.
- 26:58The fact of universal materialism and the mechanistic
- 27:02phenomena of universe operation would be wholly unrecognized by
- 27:06man. One machine cannot be conscious
- 27:10of the nature or value of another machine.
- 27:15A mechanistic philosophy of life and the universe cannot be
- 27:19scientific. Because science recognizes and
- 27:22deals only with materials and facts, philosophy is inevitably
- 27:27super scientific. Man is a material fact of
- 27:30nature, but his life is a phenomenon and transcends the
- 27:35material levels of nature in that it exhibits the control
- 27:39attributes of mind and the creative qualities of spirit.
- 27:44The sincere effort of man to become a mechanist represents
- 27:48the tragic phenomena of that man's futile effort to commit
- 27:53intellectual and moral suicide. But he cannot do it.
- 27:57If the universe were only material and man only a machine,
- 28:01there would be no science to embolden the sciences to to
- 28:05postulate this mechanization of the universe.
- 28:09Machines cannot measure, classify, or evaluate
- 28:13themselves. Such a scientific piece of work
- 28:17could be only executed by some entity of super machine status.
- 28:21There's so much more to reality, it isn't just what science can
- 28:26measure. There's two other attributes to
- 28:29to the the Trinity view of of of reality.
- 28:34There's matter, of course, but it works in conjunction with
- 28:38mind, and mind is motivated by spirit, and it's that triune
- 28:45approach to reality that gives life totality and value.
- 28:54If universe reality is only one vast machine, then man must be
- 28:57outside of the universe and apart from it in order to
- 29:01recognize such a fact and become conscious of the inside of such
- 29:05an evaluation. If man is only a machine, by
- 29:09what technique does this man come to believe or claim to know
- 29:13that he is only a machine? The experience of
- 29:17selfconsciousness and the evaluation of oneself is never
- 29:21an attribute of a mere machine. A selfconscious and avowed
- 29:25mechanist is the best possible answer to mechanism.
- 29:29If materialism were a fact, there could be no selfconscious
- 29:33mechanist. It is also true that one must
- 29:36first be a moral person before 1 can perform immoral acts.
- 29:43The very claim of materialism implies a super material
- 29:46consciousness of the mind which presumes to assert such dogma.
- 29:53A mechanism might deteriorate, but it could never progress.
- 29:57Machines do not think, create, dream, aspire, idealize, hunger
- 30:03for truth, or thirst for righteousness.
- 30:07Even a I. They do not motivate their lives
- 30:11with a passion to serve other machines and to choose as their
- 30:15goal of eternal progression the sublime, the sublime task of
- 30:21finding God. And striving to be like him.
- 30:25Machines are never intellectual, emotional, aesthetic, ethical,
- 30:30moral, or spiritual. Art proves that man is not
- 30:36mechanistic, but it does not prove that he is spiritually
- 30:39immortal. Art is morontia or mortal
- 30:43morontia, the intervening field between man the material and man
- 30:49the spiritual. Poetry is an effort.
- 30:52To escape from material realities to spiritual values in
- 30:58a high civilization, Art humanizes science while in turn
- 31:02it is spiritualized by true religion.
- 31:05Insight into spiritual and eternal values.
- 31:08Art represents the human and time space evaluation of
- 31:12reality. Religion is the divine embrace
- 31:16of cosmic values and connotes eternal progression.
- 31:21In spiritual ascension and expansion, the art of time is
- 31:26dangerous only when it becomes blind to the spirit standards of
- 31:30the divine patterns which eternity reflects is the reality
- 31:34shadows of time. True art is the effective
- 31:39manipulation of the material things of life.
- 31:43Religion is the ennobling transformation of the material
- 31:47facts of life, and it never ceases.
- 31:50In its spiritual evaluation of art, how foolish to presume that
- 31:56an automaton could conceive A philosophy of automation, and
- 32:01how ridiculous that it should presume to form such a concept
- 32:05of other and fellow automatons, any scientific interpretation of
- 32:11the material universe is valueless unless it provides due
- 32:15recognition For the scientist, no appreciation of art is
- 32:19genuine. Unless it accords recognition of
- 32:22the artist, no evaluation of morals is worthwhile unless it
- 32:27includes the moralist. No recognition of philosophy is
- 32:31codifying or edifying if it ignores the philosopher.
- 32:36And religion cannot exist without the real experience of
- 32:40the religionist, who in and through this very experience, is
- 32:44seeking to find God and to know him.
- 32:48Likewise is the universe of universes without significance
- 32:52apart from the I am the infinite God who made it and unceasingly
- 32:59manages it. Mechanists, humanists sent, tend
- 33:03to drift with the material currents.
- 33:06Idealists and spiritists dare to use their oars with intelligence
- 33:11and vigor in order to modify the apparently material course of
- 33:15the energy streams. Science lives by the mathematics
- 33:19of the mind. Music expresses the tempo of the
- 33:22emotions. Religion is the spiritual rhythm
- 33:26of the soul in time, space, harmony with higher and eternal
- 33:31melody, measurements of Infinity.
- 33:35Religious experience is something in human life which is
- 33:38truly super mathematical in language and alphabet represents
- 33:43the mechanism of materialism. While the words expressive of
- 33:47the meaning of 1000 thoughts, grand ideas and noble ideals of
- 33:52love and hate, of cowardice and courage, represent the
- 33:55performance of mind within the scope defined by both material
- 34:00and spiritual law, directed by the assertion of will of
- 34:04personality, and limited by the inherent situational endowment.
- 34:11The universe is not like the laws, mechanisms, and the
- 34:14uniformities which the scientists discover and which he
- 34:19comes to regard as science, but rather like the curious
- 34:24thinking, choosing, creative, combining and discriminating
- 34:27scientists who thus observes universe phenomena and
- 34:32classifieds the mathematical facts inherent to the
- 34:35mechanistic phases of the material side of creation.
- 34:40Neither is the universe like the artist or the art of the artist,
- 34:45but rather like the striving, dreaming, aspiring, and and
- 34:50advancing artist who seeks to transcend the world of material
- 34:54things in an effort to achieve a spiritual goal.
- 34:59The scientist, not science, perceives the reality of an
- 35:04evolving and advancing universe of energy and matter.
- 35:09The art is not Art demonstrates the existence of the transient
- 35:14Morontia world, intervening between material existence and
- 35:18spiritual liberty. The religion is not.
- 35:21Religion proves the existence of the spirit, realities and divine
- 35:27values which are to be encouraged in the progress of
- 35:31eternity in these three sections of paper 195, sections 5-6, and
- 35:37seven. Attempts are clearly made to lay
- 35:40the groundwork for the introduction of the fact that
- 35:44true reality is threefold. It is matter, but it is also
- 35:49mind, and it is spirit. The discoverer was free to make
- 35:54the discovery and assess value to the thing being discovered.
