- 0:01Exodus chapter 16 verse one And they took their journey from
- 0:08Elam, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came
- 0:13unto the wilderness of sin, which is between Elam and Sinai
- 0:18on the 15th day of the second month after their departing out
- 0:22of the land of Egypt. This is a one month anniversary
- 0:25of the Israelites when they finally got let go from the
- 0:30Egyptians. And here we're going to see that
- 0:32this wilderness of sin is exactly what they're going to
- 0:36do. They're murmuring and they're
- 0:38grumbling is going to culminate here.
- 0:41And you're going to get to see this strange paradox between a
- 0:46people who have been set free and a people who forget about
- 0:51all the works and the mighty promises of God.
- 0:55And we're no different, friends, you and I, We are quick to
- 0:58forget. And there is a, a sin of
- 1:01forgetfulness, Friends, verse 2. And the whole congregation of
- 1:07the Children of Israel murmured. And Moses against Moses and
- 1:23Aaron in the wilderness. So you can see here that this is
- 1:26going to keep creeping up with the Israelites.
- 1:30They have been set free. God has worked many miracles.
- 1:34He did the 10 plagues there in the land of Egypt.
- 1:37He's already LED them across dry land.
- 1:40He's drowned the Egyptians there in the ocean.
- 1:44And now here we see them complaining about there's no
- 1:47water to drink, that there were not enough graves in Egypt.
- 1:51Here you see this complaining and murmuring.
- 1:54This is a constant recurring theme in this time of the
- 1:59wilderness. Verse 3.
- 2:01And the children of Israel said to them, would to God, we had
- 2:05died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat
- 2:10by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full.
- 2:14For you have brought us forth into this wilderness to kill
- 2:18this whole assembly with hunger, so that they've already
- 2:21forgotten the miracles of God that he's wrought in the land.
- 2:25In their presence. They have the pillar of fire by
- 2:29night. They have the cloud by day, the
- 2:32kind of glory of God who's leading them along the path.
- 2:36And here they're murmuring and complaining, and you can see
- 2:40that this is the human condition.
- 2:43Friends. This is not just the Israelites,
- 2:46friends, We cannot just pick on them.
- 2:49We need to know that this is synonymous with the futility of
- 2:53humanity, friends, this is the human condition.
- 2:56This is whenever our hearts are not in the right position.
- 3:00This is whenever we are quick to forget the promises of God and
- 3:05the miracles of God that He has done in our lives.
- 3:08And anytime we start to complain and anytime we start to doubt,
- 3:13we need to go back and we need to wave the Word of God before
- 3:17God and remind Him of His promises and remind ourselves of
- 3:22all the times that God has come through and God will come
- 3:26through in ways that are beyond your comprehension.
- 3:29You cannot even begin to understand what God can do.
- 3:34Friends, He can literally regrow limbs. 4 Then said the Lord to
- 3:42Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you, and the
- 3:46people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I
- 3:51may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or no.
- 3:55News flash, friends, God already knows what you're going to do
- 4:00before you do it. It is US who needs to know the
- 4:03propensity to fall away, our proclivities, friends, to fall
- 4:09away so easily, whenever all of the comforts that we have
- 4:14enjoyed are at stake, whenever anything gets rocked, whenever
- 4:20our doctrine and theology gets rocked, we are quick to fall
- 4:23away friends and we live a life of offence.
- 4:27But here God wanted to show them just how weak and fragile they
- 4:33are. 5 And it shall come to pass that on the 6th day they shall
- 4:40prepare that which they bring in, and it shall be twice as
- 4:44much as they gather daily. So here you need to know that
- 4:47God is going to reign these little wafer like edible seeds
- 4:54on the ground that tasted like honey.
- 4:56This Angel food, the bread of God and he always knows how to
- 5:02provide for his people. I've never seen the righteous
- 5:06begging for bread. Friends 6 And Moses and Aaron
- 5:12said to all the children of Israel at evening, then you
- 5:16shall know that the Lord has brought you out from the land of
- 5:19Egypt. You know, these Israelites were
- 5:23romanticizing the time that they had in Egypt, the 430 years that
- 5:29they spent. And if you go back and you study
- 5:33the beginning of the book of Exodus, you're going to find
- 5:37that Pharaoh was making it harder and harder and harder on
- 5:42them. He would not give them straw for
- 5:44their brick. And he still wanted the same
- 5:47amount of bricks. And they complained back then to
- 5:50Moses and Aaron. And here they are.
- 5:53They've already walked across on dry land.
- 5:55They're away from the bondage of the Egyptians.
- 5:59And all they want to do is go back, friends.
- 6:02And it's no different with you and with me.
- 6:07We get set free, but we romanticize about our sinful
- 6:12life before and we think of how much fun we had.
- 6:16We think about all the things we're missing out on.
- 6:19And here's the reality. God has already parted the sea
- 6:24for you to walk across on dry land, and He is not going to
- 6:29part the sea again for you to go back into slavery and back into
- 6:33bondage to sin. 8 And Moses said, this shall be when the
- 6:42Lord shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the
- 6:47morning bread to the full. For that the Lord hears your
- 6:51murmurings, which you murmur against him.
- 6:55And what are we? Your murmurings are not against
- 6:59us, but against the Lord. That's what you need to
- 7:03understand when we shake our fists at the ways of God, when
- 7:08we don't understand that His ways are higher and His thoughts
- 7:13are much grander than anything that our finite soda can sized
- 7:18minds can try to come up with. Whenever we don't understand why
- 7:23He leaves people sick, why people die, why there is
- 7:28disease, when we don't understand the poverty, when we
- 7:32don't understand the big picture, and we get offended and
- 7:36we fall away. It is not that we are
- 7:39complaining and murmuring against the church.
- 7:42It's not that we're complaining and murmuring against the words
- 7:46in the Bible. We are actually complaining and
- 7:49murmuring against the Creator of everything seen and unseen, the
- 7:53only uncreated. There is only one true living
- 7:57God, and that is who we complain against when we are offended and
- 8:02fall away. 9 And Moses spoken to Aaron, say unto all the
- 8:11congregation of the children of Israel, come near before the
- 8:16Lord, for he has heard your murmurings.
- 8:19So here Moses says to Aaron, Go and tell the people that God has
- 8:23heard all of their complaining, and God's going to do something
- 8:27about it. And isn't it just like God to be
- 8:31long-suffering? Isn't it just like God to know
- 8:35how to give good gifts even whenever we do not deserve them?
- 8:39We deserved hell, friends, but He still gave us Jesus Christ as
- 8:45the only way unto him. And anyone who places their
- 8:49faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and confesses him as the Son of
- 8:53God and believes that God raised him on the third day will be
- 8:57saved in. And it came to pass, as Aaron
- 9:02spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that
- 9:05they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the
- 9:08glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.
- 9:15Here's what you need to know. God is feeding them.
- 9:19He's giving them quail in the evening.
- 9:22He's giving them this dew from heaven, the bread of God, sweet
- 9:29like honey, wafers of coriander seed in the morning, and here
- 9:35he's coming, and he is revealing himself in this Shekinah glory.
- 9:4211 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 12 I have heard the
- 9:49murmurings of the children of Israel.
- 9:52Speak to them, say, at evening you shall eat flesh, in the
- 9:57morning you shall be filled with bread, and you will know that I
- 10:01am the Lord your God. So here God descends, and he
- 10:07reveals and manifests inside of this Shekinah glory.
- 10:11And he speaks unto the children of Israel.
- 10:15These are his first born, the beloved. 13 And it came to pass
- 10:23that evening the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the
- 10:28morning the dew lay round about the host.
- 10:31So God here in his wonderful provision is making sure that
- 10:36his people who are called by his name are taken care of.
- 10:41He's left them in Egypt for 430 years to multiply and to become
- 10:46this great nation, and he's not about to see them waste away.
- 10:51And they did not trust God, and they did not trust his
- 10:55spokesman, Moses and Aaron. And they were murmuring and
- 10:59complaining and they were romanticizing about their time
- 11:03and bondage and slavery. And we are no different. 14 And
- 11:10when the dew that was gone up, behold, upon the face of the
- 11:14wilderness, there lay a small round thing, as small as the
- 11:18hoarfrost on the ground. So this was about the size of a
- 11:21coriander seed, Friends. 15 And when the children of Israel saw
- 11:27it, they said, one to another, It is manna, for they did not
- 11:32know what it was. And Moses said unto them, This
- 11:36is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.
- 11:39And they said, What is it? Which is the connotation of the
- 11:42word for manna? They did not know what to call
- 11:46it, so they just said, What is it?
- 11:48And that's what it was called. And here we can see that God
- 11:51called it food for the angels. 16 This is the thing which the
- 12:01Lord had commanded. Gather of it every man according
- 12:05to his eating, and Omer, for every man according to the
- 12:09number of your persons, Take you every man for them which are in
- 12:12his tents. So we need to know that God
- 12:15still provides for the birds of the air and the lilies of the
- 12:20field. And how much more important are
- 12:23you, friend? But you still have to get up and
- 12:25go get it. He didn't just drop it into
- 12:28their mouths. He doesn't just drop the food
- 12:31into the mouths of the birds, Friends, They've got to leave
- 12:35the nest and go and get it. And it's no different for you
- 12:38and for me. We are to be out in the harvest.
- 12:42We are to be out doing what we can, friends, putting some feet
- 12:48to your belief. 17 And the children of Israel did so, and
- 12:54gathered some more and some less. 18 And when they did meet
- 12:58it with an Omer, he that gathered much had nothing over,
- 13:02and he that gathered little had no lack.
- 13:05They gathered every man according to his eating.
- 13:08So that is what you need to know whenever you are in the presence
- 13:12of God Almighty. There is no lack, friends, when
- 13:15you've been indwelled with the Holy Spirit, you need to know
- 13:18that God's going to clothe you, God's going to give you food to
- 13:23eat. That is a done deal.
- 13:25You can rest on that. You can bank on that.
- 13:28You can build your life on the promises of God that with food
- 13:32and clothing be content. 19 And Moses said, let no man leave of
- 13:41it till the morning. So he's saying, don't be greedy.
- 13:45Don't try to gather too much for the next day.
- 13:48Each day you have to go out and get it. 20 Notwithstanding they
- 13:53did not listen to Moses, some of them left off, left of it until
- 13:59the morning, and it bred worms and stank, and Moses was wroth
- 14:06with them. That's what you need to
- 14:08understand, friends, is that we cannot be greedy.
- 14:13We must live open handed. Freely you have been given, and
- 14:17freely you shall give. Friends, do not let your left
- 14:21hand know what your right hand's doing.
- 14:24You need to understand the ways of God is not clench fisted.
- 14:29It's not trying to think about tomorrow.
- 14:32Tomorrow has enough worry in itself.
- 14:35You need to understand that God's ways are day by day, and
- 14:42this is where you can see that they erred grievously by trying
- 14:48to be greedy and it stank and had worms whenever they woke up
- 14:53the next day 21. And they gathered it every
- 14:57morning, every man according to his eating, and when the sun
- 15:00grew hot, it melted. So they only had a limited time
- 15:04each day to go out and to gather it, because if they were lazy
- 15:08and did not get up together and it was gone. 22 And it came to
- 15:12pass that on the 6th day they gathered twice as much bread to
- 15:16OMERS for one man, and all the rulers of the congregation came
- 15:21and told Moses. So here's what you need to
- 15:24understand is that right before the Sabbath day rest, which this
- 15:31will be the first time that it's mentioned, but right before the
- 15:35Sabbath day rest, they were to gather twice as much, and they
- 15:39thought it was significant enough to come and to tell Moses
- 15:43what was going on. 23 And he said to them, This is that which
- 15:47the Lord has said, Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath
- 15:52unto the Lord, Bake that which you will bake today, and see
- 15:57that which you will seethe, and that which remains over lay up
- 16:01for you to be kept until the morning.
- 16:03So here you can see that on the very last day they were to
- 16:10gather twice as much, so that on their Sabbath they could rest.
- 16:1724 And they laid it up till the morning as Moses bade, and it
- 16:21did not stink, neither was any worm in it. 25 And Moses said,
- 16:27Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath unto the Lord.
- 16:31Today you shall not find it in the field.
- 16:33So God was showing them through these miraculous signs of
- 16:37provision, that He is a God of a six day work week.
- 16:42And we are to rest on 1/7 day. Friends, 26 six days you shall
- 16:50gather it. But on the 7th day, which is the
- 16:52Sabbath in it there shall be none.
- 16:55And you know, we would do well to only work six days out of the
- 17:00week and allow our minds and our bodies to take a complete
- 17:04Sabbath once a week and do nothing. 27 And it and it came
- 17:11to pass that there went out some of the people on the 7th day
- 17:16together, and they found none. So perhaps these people did not
- 17:20take God serious. Perhaps they did not take the
- 17:24words of Moses serious, and they thought, I'll just go out on the
- 17:287th day like I always have. And they were sorely displeased
- 17:34to find that there was nothing on the ground for them. 28 And
- 17:39the Lord said to Moses, How long do you refuse to keep my
- 17:43commandments and my laws? So you can see here that God
- 17:48wants them to take him seriously.
- 17:50And we would do well, friends, to remember all of the promises
- 17:54that are contained in this book. 29 C For that the Lord has given
- 18:01you the Sabbath. Therefore he gives you on the
- 18:046th day the bread of two days. Abide you every man in his
- 18:11place. Let no man go out of his place.
- 18:14On the 7th day he sang Rest. It's good for you. 30 So the
- 18:19people rested on the 7th day. 31 In the House of Israel called
- 18:24the name of it Manna, and it was like coriander seed, white, and
- 18:29the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32 And Moses
- 18:34said, This is the thing which the Lord commanded philanomer of
- 18:38it to be kept for all for your generations, that they may see
- 18:43the bread where I have fed you in the wilderness with, when I
- 18:48brought you forth from the land of Egypt.
- 18:51So this little jar was to be placed in the ark of the
- 18:54covenant, where God's manifest holiest of holy presence SAT. 33
- 19:04And Moses said it to Aaron, Take a pot and put an Omer full of
- 19:07manna in it, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for
- 19:12your generations. 34 And the Lord commanded Moses.
- 19:17So Aaron, as the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up
- 19:21before the testimony to be kept. So you can see here that they
- 19:26understood the gravity and the weight of what they were being
- 19:29asked, and they did it with haste, and they did it in the
- 19:33way that God asked them to. 35 And the children of Israel did
- 19:40eat manna 40 years until they came to a land inhabited.
- 19:51They did eat manna until they came to the borders of the land
- 19:54of Canaan. So God made sure to take care of
- 19:58them. He made sure not to let them go
- 20:02by the wayside and to waste away.
- 20:04We'll live on. 36 Now an Omer is the 10th part of Anipa, so you
- 20:10need to know that these. Our real measurements, this is a
- 20:15real account, real time, and this is not just some storybook
- 20:20for us to feel good about our lives or feel good about what's
- 20:23next. This is the reality, friends.
- 20:26This is his story. I hope you've been blessed by
- 20:30this amazing chapter in God's Word.
- 20:33I know I sure have. We'll say a quick prayer.
- 20:37We thank you, Lord, for this time together.
- 20:39We thank you, God, that you showed up.
- 20:42Thank you, Lord, for all of the promises contained in the book.
- 20:45Lord, I pray that you'll help us to let these words absorb into
- 20:52our being, into our mind. We thank you, God, for being the
- 20:55God that you are, for being good and holy and righteous and true
- 21:00and just. We thank you, Lord, that you're
- 21:03fighting our battles. We thank you, God, that you've
- 21:06given us this inspired word. We thank you that it is alive
- 21:11and active God, and we step into the promises that you've given
- 21:15us. We love you, Father, We love
- 21:18everything about you, and it's in your holy and precious name
- 21:22that I pray. Amen.
