Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / TRADE BAIT? Mike Trout's return to All-Star form fuels speculation the center fielder could be traded
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Lay Angel fans in Welcome back to Halo Territory. I
- 0:11Speaker 1: am Mike D. Giovanna, former Ella Times Baseball writer and
- 0:14Speaker 1: host of the show with my regular co host Mark Trumbull,
- 0:17Speaker 1: the former Angel slugger. We are taping on Wednesday afternoon.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Mark has a banquet function to attend this evening. So
- 0:27Speaker 1: as we speak, the Angels are leading the White Sox
- 0:30Speaker 1: seven to one through six innings on the verge if
- 0:34Speaker 1: their bullpen can hold it of winning an actual series.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Really nice day for Walbert Urania, the young pitcher. Six innings,
- 0:43Speaker 1: two hits, watern run, three walks, five strikeouts and through
- 0:50Speaker 1: ninety pitches, and Travis Darnaut with a three run home run.
- 0:54Speaker 1: A little lightning from the bat of the backup catcher,
- 0:57Speaker 1: but unfortunately he left the game in the fourth inning.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Appeared to tweak some kind of muscle on his leg
- 1:03Speaker 1: calf or amstring is my guess, trying to beat out
- 1:06Speaker 1: an infield flare up the middle. Would you like out
- 1:11Speaker 1: of Urania today? Mark?
- 1:14Speaker 2: I liked a lot out of Urania. The last two starts,
- 1:17Speaker 2: in fact, is a sinker. It's a very good pitch
- 1:21Speaker 2: and it's change up equally, so they kind of play
- 1:24Speaker 2: really well off of each other. He's going to develop
- 1:26Speaker 2: a better breaking ball too as he goes. But he
- 1:30Speaker 2: did walk three today. That's totally acceptable. They really didn't
- 1:35Speaker 2: that first inning. I believe they had a little bit
- 1:37Speaker 2: going and he was able to shut that down. And
- 1:41Speaker 2: it seems like this should be another easy victim unless
- 1:45Speaker 2: something strange happens last night if you were what you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: watching the end, which which at the eye would have
- 1:51Speaker 2: thought they had just won maybe the division series. And
- 1:56Speaker 2: it's a recurring theme the I guess the ab TV
- 2:00Speaker 2: is a high energy product. So if anybody else has noticed.
- 2:05Speaker 1: That, I've noticed that, maybe maybe we should take a
- 2:09Speaker 1: cue from them, huh, then get the energy up on
- 2:11Speaker 1: this show.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I don't want to scare anybody or blow any ear drums,
- 2:15Speaker 2: but it has been noticeable on my end. So good
- 2:19Speaker 2: for the Angels are hitting those home runs. That's I believe.
- 2:23Speaker 2: We were told that there's more than one way to
- 2:25Speaker 2: score runs, and this is the way they prefer to
- 2:28Speaker 2: do it, and they're doing it well.
- 2:30Speaker 1: One guy who is hitting a lot of home runs
- 2:31Speaker 1: for the Angels, and it's a great storyline so far
- 2:34Speaker 1: in this early season is Mike Trout hitting two sixty
- 2:37Speaker 1: four with a nine to ninety three ops, eleven homers,
- 2:40Speaker 1: twenty three RBIs leads the major leagues with thirty six walks,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and he scored thirty two runs already, And uh, you know,
- 2:49Speaker 1: I don't know that he's back to Mike Trout, the
- 2:51Speaker 1: three time American League MVP level. Certainly not back to
- 2:54Speaker 1: that level, but he's certainly playing at a way better
- 3:00Speaker 1: performance is far superior than we've seen in the last
- 3:02Speaker 1: few years, which has fuel some speculation that maybe the
- 3:07Speaker 1: Angels should trade Mike Trout. Wilder's value is probably higher
- 3:10Speaker 1: than it's ever done. And Joe Madden, the former Angels manager,
- 3:15Speaker 1: did address some of these things with a J. Prizinski
- 3:18Speaker 1: on the Foul Territory Network today. Let's take a listen,
- 3:22Speaker 1: Mike Trout.
- 3:23Speaker 2: He's in Anaheim. You managed Mike Trout.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Will we ever see him leave Anaheim to try to
- 3:28Speaker 3: go to a place to win because they're not winning
- 3:30Speaker 3: this year. It doesn't look like they're going to win
- 3:32Speaker 3: anytime soon. Could it turned around, sure, But now people,
- 3:35Speaker 3: it's kind of getting louder and louder. Hey, Mike Trout's
- 3:37Speaker 3: off to a great start to be the perfect time
- 3:39Speaker 3: for the Angels to finally move him.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Will that happen.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I don't think it'll happen, But I thought it should
- 3:45Speaker 4: have happened when it was pretty obvious that Joe Hay
- 3:47Speaker 4: was going to leave the Angels, or when he did
- 3:49Speaker 4: leave the Angels. I thought that was the perfect time
- 3:51Speaker 4: to trade Mikey at that time too, only because I mean,
- 3:55Speaker 4: the situation there wasn't good at that moment. It still
- 3:58Speaker 4: hasn't really risen high above that particular moment in time.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Uh.
- 4:02Speaker 4: And it's they they do, if they if they could
- 4:05Speaker 4: restock in a in a very healthy way, and that
- 4:07Speaker 4: would be up to their determination how they evaluate prospects.
- 4:11Speaker 4: But yes, I would, I would send him out. I
- 4:14Speaker 4: would send him out for his own benefit, for the
- 4:16Speaker 4: benefit of baseball, getting an opportunity to see him play
- 4:19Speaker 4: in a playoff situation. Just not unlike what happened with
- 4:22Speaker 4: the show when he went to the Dodgers and all
- 4:23Speaker 4: of a sudden he's become kind of a showtime. And
- 4:26Speaker 4: you know, Mikey's looks really good right now. I'm watching
- 4:29Speaker 4: him at center field. He's moving well. You watch him.
- 4:31Speaker 4: I saw him score first to home I think and
- 4:33Speaker 4: I saw him. The camera happened to be on him
- 4:36Speaker 4: going from around third base of the plate, and then
- 4:38Speaker 4: he actually slid in the home plate and I thought, wow,
- 4:40Speaker 4: he must be feeling pretty good if he just didn't
- 4:42Speaker 4: run through the bag, slid into it and he never
- 4:44Speaker 4: lost stride and the effort level was good. So yeah,
- 4:47Speaker 4: if there's there's no better time for them to do
- 4:49Speaker 4: it than right now, get something in return for it.
- 4:53Speaker 4: It's not conceding the feat by any means. It's just
- 4:56Speaker 4: a smart baseball maneuver. And and if in any way
- 5:00Speaker 4: they could hook up with a group that they feel
- 5:01Speaker 4: good about their return, I think it would be wise.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Interesting words from Joe Madden, the former Angel skipper. Hey, listen,
- 5:10Speaker 1: I would love nothing more than to see Mike Trout
- 5:13Speaker 1: get traded to a contender, see him play in October,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and have you know, bear some resemblance to the Mike
- 5:19Speaker 1: Trout we saw over the last decade in Anaheim. But
- 5:24Speaker 1: reality is, and Joe said it right off the bat,
- 5:26Speaker 1: he doesn't think it's going to happen. I don't think
- 5:28Speaker 1: it's going to happen either. Why well, first of all,
- 5:31Speaker 1: Trout turns thirty five in August, and he's his contract
- 5:35Speaker 1: has another four and a half years at thirty five
- 5:39Speaker 1: and a half million a year. He also has a
- 5:41Speaker 1: full no trade clause, so we all know how important
- 5:45Speaker 1: loyalty is to Mike and that would be, you know,
- 5:48Speaker 1: an issue. And if he has dealt to the deadline,
- 5:52Speaker 1: the team trading for him, you're looking at one hundred
- 5:55Speaker 1: and sixty five million through two than twenty thirty that contract.
- 6:01Speaker 1: So to me, if the Angels are going to pull
- 6:04Speaker 1: off a deal like that, they're going to have to
- 6:06Speaker 1: pay conservatively maybe half of that contract. And I just
- 6:11Speaker 1: do not see Artie Marino as the type of guy
- 6:15Speaker 1: who's going to pay eighty million or so to see
- 6:18Speaker 1: his franchise player, the Hall of Famer first ballot play
- 6:24Speaker 1: for somebody else. I just don't see that. What do
- 6:27Speaker 1: you think, Mark, Is there any chance this could happen?
- 6:30Speaker 5: No?
- 6:31Speaker 2: And why is that? The baseball writers and there's been
- 6:38Speaker 2: a few yourself, I saw Alton Gonzalez, maybe Ken Rosenthal
- 6:43Speaker 2: as well. I'm not sure there's been a number of
- 6:45Speaker 2: them that have said that this doesn't for the same
- 6:47Speaker 2: reasons you just said. In addition, Joe Madden's been in
- 6:53Speaker 2: this game a lot longer than me, and I do
- 6:55Speaker 2: respect his opinion. I think the not trading show Hey
- 6:59Speaker 2: Otani is the much bigger. I mean, if you knew,
- 7:04Speaker 2: and it's revisiting that just a little bit. It seemed like,
- 7:08Speaker 2: I mean, he ended up getting a contract with a
- 7:10Speaker 2: seven in the first digit, and I believe that maybe
- 7:14Speaker 2: another owner thought it would be a four. So hard
- 7:19Speaker 2: to say, you have. There's people that can probably predict
- 7:22Speaker 2: those things, and maybe the consultant wasn't not as accurate there.
- 7:28Speaker 2: But with Mike, it is pretty cool. Actually, it's incredibly cool.
- 7:32Speaker 2: If he finishes his whole career with one team. You
- 7:34Speaker 2: don't see that much anymore. It's just rare. Maybe it'll
- 7:39Speaker 2: change with some of these guys getting these twelve thirteen
- 7:42Speaker 2: year deals early in their career and taking them into
- 7:45Speaker 2: their mid thirties. But the money doesn't make sense. The
- 7:49Speaker 2: no trade clause is really the thing. I don't have
- 7:54Speaker 2: any insider information. My gut says that Mike doesn't have
- 7:57Speaker 2: a huge appetite to move. I think his family is
- 8:00Speaker 2: happy here. He's a low key guy that isn't already obvious.
- 8:06Speaker 2: You know, that should be news to nobody. I think
- 8:08Speaker 2: that some guys prefer to play in environments that they enjoy.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And it's not to say that he enjoys, you know,
- 8:16Speaker 2: the brand of baseball that they are playing. But he's happy.
- 8:19Speaker 2: He is and and on a broader note, this season
- 8:24Speaker 2: he seems in a better place mentally. If there's some
- 8:29Speaker 2: some reasons behind that, maybe you know, we'll hear those,
- 8:32Speaker 2: but I just you know, it's nice to see the
- 8:35Speaker 2: last few years especially, and you know what injuries are
- 8:38Speaker 2: highly you know those will suck the life out of
- 8:40Speaker 2: your enjoyment. And you know he's healthy, he's happy, he's
- 8:44Speaker 2: playing well, and he's a he's an angel, and I
- 8:46Speaker 2: think he will remain an angel. Yeah.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I think the word healthy is the key for me.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I think he's happy because he's healthy and he's back
- 8:53Speaker 1: in center field. He's playing out there every day. We
- 8:56Speaker 1: saw a couple of really nice throws in the Chicago series.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I think he throughout a guy at second on the
- 9:02Speaker 1: first game, and then he almost threw a guy, threw
- 9:04Speaker 1: a guy out at second, tagging up me drough on
- 9:07Speaker 1: a fly to pretty deep center. So I just think
- 9:10Speaker 1: he's a different player when he's playing a two way game.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I do wonder though, and you you were a teammate
- 9:18Speaker 1: of trouts when he was young and coming up. And
- 9:21Speaker 1: I don't know how well you've kept up with him
- 9:23Speaker 1: over years. But you know, the whole thing about loyalty,
- 9:26Speaker 1: I get it, he's very loyal to already that he's
- 9:28Speaker 1: made him you know, I'll make him a billionaire. But
- 9:31Speaker 1: I do wonder. I think if the right deal came
- 9:34Speaker 1: along with the right team, maybe Phillies, if he goes
- 9:37Speaker 1: back to his home home, you know, the roots is
- 9:40Speaker 1: h I think he would waive the no trade. I
- 9:44Speaker 1: really do, especially if it's maybe in you know, one
- 9:47Speaker 1: or two years from now, when there's only a couple
- 9:49Speaker 1: of years left in his contract. Do you really think
- 9:52Speaker 1: that's a bigger obstacle than the actual contract itself.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I'm not sure you could ask him.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, he's always he always loves talking about this stuff.
- 10:04Speaker 2: That'll be an interesting will you're the perfect next time
- 10:07Speaker 2: you're there, Why don't you Why don't you run a
- 10:08Speaker 2: buy him? See what he says, I definitely will.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Hey, we're going to take a quick break for a
- 10:12Speaker 1: word from our sponsors, and when we come back, we're
- 10:15Speaker 1: going to talk about a guy who was slumping badly
- 10:17Speaker 1: before this series, but seems to have broken out of
- 10:20Speaker 1: it a little bit. Zach Nettle the short stop. We'll
- 10:22Speaker 1: be right back with more Halo territory.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Let's talk love life ft family. I know it's an

- 11:26Speaker 1: Welcome back to Helo Territory on Mike Dgievanna with Mark Trumbo.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Zach Netto snapped an ode for twenty three skid with
- 11:33Speaker 1: a single in the third inning Tuesday night, Danny hit
- 11:37Speaker 1: a go ahead home run. I believe it's in the
- 11:39Speaker 1: fifth inning. And then on Wednesday he hit an RBI
- 11:44Speaker 1: triple to right field, and then Mark, we've talked about
- 11:47Speaker 1: this kid being a dead pull hitter, far too much
- 11:51Speaker 1: of a pull hitter for your taste for that first
- 11:54Speaker 1: month of the season. How we always hear you, know,
- 11:56Speaker 1: Dave Roberts, I heard it for years and years. Use
- 11:59Speaker 1: the big part of the field, He's a big part
- 12:00Speaker 1: of the field. How significant is him going to right field?
- 12:04Speaker 1: I think he went to write on the single the
- 12:06Speaker 1: other night. How big is that for him? And what
- 12:09Speaker 1: did you sort of see in his at bats these
- 12:11Speaker 1: last few days?
- 12:15Speaker 2: Personally, I do like to see it. I've also said
- 12:17Speaker 2: with him he is a poll hitter, but he's able
- 12:20Speaker 2: to do a lot up the walk rate rather significantly
- 12:24Speaker 2: in short order. But then came the batting slump. I
- 12:30Speaker 2: guess he said it in his own words, credited Pokemon
- 12:35Speaker 2: cards with getting him out of it. It was talked
- 12:39Speaker 2: about on the broadcast today. Baby Yoda, it's grogu actually,
- 12:45Speaker 2: I think is the technical term Pokemon cards, and it's
- 12:50Speaker 2: a world that I really don't know too well, but
- 12:53Speaker 2: don't work. Why question it? He I think he Well,
- 13:00Speaker 2: obviously he got out of the box eventually on that
- 13:02Speaker 2: home run, but.
- 13:05Speaker 5: That was.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Let the kids play. Let the kids play. Yeah, yeah,
- 13:12Speaker 2: if he's having fun. Bobby Valentine had some interesting words
- 13:16Speaker 2: on the pregame show today. I appreciated what he said.
- 13:21Speaker 2: It's rare to hear that, especially from ab TV, But
- 13:26Speaker 2: he said that, you know, he thought that the Zach
- 13:29Speaker 2: had lost some focus, and I think that that might
- 13:32Speaker 2: be pretty true. I think that Ron Washington got on
- 13:35Speaker 2: him previously about taking the defense excuse me, taking the
- 13:39Speaker 2: bat out to to defense and some of the plays
- 13:42Speaker 2: slipping away. We've seen a few this week that for
- 13:45Speaker 2: an elite defender. With all those runs saved, I think
- 13:47Speaker 2: that they were makeable. He wears his emotions on his sleeve.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Sterling Ball. Our guest was, you know, he hit upon that,
- 13:55Speaker 2: and if you're going to be a leader, if you're
- 13:57Speaker 2: going to be a highly compensated player. It's important to
- 14:01Speaker 2: be as even keeled as you can through the tough times.
- 14:03Speaker 2: It's not easy, but it's important. And I think the
- 14:06Speaker 2: production and the prolonged slumps might be you're able to
- 14:11Speaker 2: get out of him if you're able to see the
- 14:12Speaker 2: bigger picture. I think he's still too young to have
- 14:14Speaker 2: that perspective, though everything can kind of feel like, you know,
- 14:18Speaker 2: the world is ending. Howie Kendrick was one of the
- 14:20Speaker 2: absolute best. He knew he could hit. He never questioned
- 14:23Speaker 2: when he would hit again. You know, maybe exaggerating a
- 14:27Speaker 2: little bit, but as much confidence in his bat as anyone.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And it really rubs off on people and myself just trustingly,
- 14:35Speaker 2: if you look at the overall career picture, you've always
- 14:37Speaker 2: been a good ballplayer and it's in there. It's just
- 14:40Speaker 2: a matter of kind of getting the groove back. And
- 14:43Speaker 2: if he is and he's gotten it back, he binges,
- 14:45Speaker 2: so who knows he could really go off.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that lack of focus shows up in some strange
- 14:50Speaker 1: areas too, even this White Sox series where he didn't
- 14:53Speaker 1: have a very good offensive series. After his single Tuesday
- 14:58Speaker 1: Night in the third inning, he gets picked off first,
- 15:00Speaker 1: And to me, this biggest mental mistake was in the
- 15:04Speaker 1: ninth inning, the guys on first base for the White
- 15:07Speaker 1: Sox steals second. It's a one run ball game. Mind you,
- 15:12Speaker 1: Netto didn't appear to make one effort to back up
- 15:15Speaker 1: second base on the play. The throw gets by h
- 15:19Speaker 1: I believe it was. It was a paras or grisom
- 15:22Speaker 1: at second gets by Scoots in this grisome gets by
- 15:26Speaker 1: Scoots in the center field, tying run, gets a third
- 15:29Speaker 1: base with one out, Now, Zephyr John. That took them
- 15:33Speaker 1: about twenty five pitches to finally get out of that inning.
- 15:36Speaker 1: But how do you sort of reconcile this kid's label
- 15:42Speaker 1: as an up and coming star of the game with
- 15:44Speaker 1: lapses like that? It just seems like, you know, that's
- 15:47Speaker 1: just pure effort. It's it's focus and concentration. It's hustle.
- 15:52Speaker 1: It's not a skill, you know, it is not.
- 15:56Speaker 2: It's something that it's hard because it was hammered into us.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Tom Kotchman, I have a rookie ball manager. He said
- 16:05Speaker 2: it in a rather definitive way, and you didn't forget it.
- 16:09Speaker 2: But I responded better to tough coaching, and I don't
- 16:13Speaker 2: I don't think there's an ounce of that with this staff.
- 16:16Speaker 2: And it's not a diss it's just I think it's
- 16:18Speaker 2: a different world. I don't see Kurt really how you know,
- 16:23Speaker 2: he might have it in him, but I don't think
- 16:25Speaker 2: it's his preferred strategy. And as far as on the
- 16:29Speaker 2: player's side, I'm not sure anyone would pull you to
- 16:32Speaker 2: the side like some you know, former years, and you know,
- 16:38Speaker 2: I'm not a current player, so I have at times
- 16:40Speaker 2: just I got to lean on the experiences I had,
- 16:43Speaker 2: and I know for certain that some of those things
- 16:46Speaker 2: it would have came from soach to the bottom line,
- 16:48Speaker 2: and he did it. I remember Howie and I had
- 16:50Speaker 2: a miscommunication on a pop up one time. It fell.
- 16:53Speaker 2: It was ugly. I don't know if it cost a
- 16:56Speaker 2: run or not, but we the second you got into
- 16:59Speaker 2: the dugout. But that was it, in and out. You know,
- 17:02Speaker 2: he set his beast and didn't take us out of
- 17:04Speaker 2: the lineup or anything, but it was just, hey, this
- 17:06Speaker 2: is unacceptable. And you know how he had some years
- 17:09Speaker 2: under his belt at that point, so no one was immune.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Zach got an instant quote after the Tuesday night game.
- 17:16Speaker 1: This courtesy of the Orange County register. I got told
- 17:19Speaker 1: today just to not forget who I am. I'm still Swaggy,
- 17:24Speaker 1: that confident person that I am every single day, and
- 17:27Speaker 1: I wanted to get back to that and joke around
- 17:30Speaker 1: with everybody.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Now.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I just I did a big story on Zach over
- 17:34Speaker 1: the winnow over the winter for Baseball Digest, and it's
- 17:38Speaker 1: just came out in the most recent issue, and it
- 17:41Speaker 1: talked about just that. I think Logan OHOPEI called it
- 17:46Speaker 1: is three oh five swag. He's a Miami kid from
- 17:49Speaker 1: three oh five. It's that mixture of confidence and flair
- 17:52Speaker 1: that so many players from Miami, like Manny Machado played with.
- 17:57Speaker 1: But how tough is it to sort of maintain that
- 18:00Speaker 1: swagger when you're hitting two eighteen and you're leading the
- 18:02Speaker 1: American League with fifty five strikeouts? And how when you're
- 18:06Speaker 1: a player that sort of really leans into that for
- 18:08Speaker 1: performance when you're not performing, do you just kind of
- 18:11Speaker 1: got to fake it? Do you make it there? How
- 18:13Speaker 1: does a guy you know, what happens when when a swaggy,
- 18:17Speaker 1: when Swaggy loses his swag, it's.
- 18:23Speaker 2: It gets The bottom line is it's a bigger deal.
- 18:26Speaker 2: And that's the emotional side of it, and so in
- 18:31Speaker 2: the real world, people have all ranges of emotion. I've
- 18:34Speaker 2: tried to up mine a little on here. I believe
- 18:37Speaker 2: I was told a lacked at least, and I understand
- 18:43Speaker 2: and it was true. It was true. But you know what,
- 18:48Speaker 2: I think that it just comes with maturity. I'd say
- 18:51Speaker 2: that at the end of the day, I don't know
- 18:53Speaker 2: what swaggy means. I'm not swaggy. I believe maybe New
- 18:59Speaker 2: York the Yankees have a swaggy player, made some bold
- 19:02Speaker 2: predictions to start the ar A jazz player, sure, and
- 19:07Speaker 2: I get in concept what it means. I'm not that
- 19:10Speaker 2: out of it, but I prefer old school. I think
- 19:14Speaker 2: the guys that thrive in Anaheim have usually been We've
- 19:17Speaker 2: talked about it a little more Darren Erstad than jazz Chisholm.
- 19:23Speaker 2: But doesn't mean it can't work. I just think that
- 19:26Speaker 2: you've got to set a good example for the younger
- 19:29Speaker 2: players that I'll never get off of. And I think
- 19:32Speaker 2: if there are some critiques, I haven't seen a good
- 19:34Speaker 2: effort down the baselines a number of times. There was
- 19:38Speaker 2: another pitch challenge in the first at bat today, which
- 19:40Speaker 2: I don't think. You know, you got to do it quickly,
- 19:42Speaker 2: so it's not as if maybe you even have time
- 19:45Speaker 2: to think it through. But he did lose one recently,
- 19:47Speaker 2: maybe the first pitch of the game. He tried to
- 19:50Speaker 2: steal earlier. They're going to the should win this game today,
- 19:53Speaker 2: but he got thrown out trying to steal. There's still
- 19:57Speaker 2: a number of things that need to be refined a
- 19:59Speaker 2: bit more. But the bottom line, if he's hitting his
- 20:01Speaker 2: homers and he's playing good defense, that war is going
- 20:04Speaker 2: to continue to be lofty and he'll get paid a
- 20:07Speaker 2: lot of money.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know it has been swinging a pretty
- 20:12Speaker 1: hot bag for the Angels lately. His first baseman, Nolan
- 20:15Speaker 1: shan Well, he did struggle with an ankle injury in April.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Seems to be over that, making some pretty solid contact,
- 20:23Speaker 1: hitting some home runs. Mark, seems like you've picked up
- 20:26Speaker 1: on a little bit of this yourself.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Nolan does look like he's in a much better place.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I saw an interview with Erica on the broadcast the
- 20:34Speaker 2: other day where she was asking about a few things,
- 20:38Speaker 2: including improving his plate discipline. He acknowledged that he has
- 20:41Speaker 2: chased too many pitches this year, and he seemed to
- 20:44Speaker 2: be hinting that it was a result of searching for
- 20:48Speaker 2: more power, which is kind of ironic because I think
- 20:51Speaker 2: that Nolan is at his best and his power seems
- 20:55Speaker 2: to blossom when he's not trying to hit for power
- 20:59Speaker 2: kind of one of those opposite things. So if his
- 21:01Speaker 2: ankle's feeling good, he's making solid contact, his exit the
- 21:04Speaker 2: losses of your spike in and I think Nolan makes
- 21:07Speaker 2: a lot of sense for this week's Daily Dingers.

- 22:09Speaker 1: Well, let's turn our attention to Jose Suriano, who was
- 22:12Speaker 1: nearly untouchable in April. He was the American League Pitcher
- 22:16Speaker 1: of the Month, first Angel to win that award since
- 22:19Speaker 1: Matt Shoemaker, former teammate of Mark Trembos in August of
- 22:23Speaker 1: twenty fourteen. But Stories had a little bit of a
- 22:27Speaker 1: rough go of it in his last two starts, and
- 22:29Speaker 1: Monday night was his worst start of the year. He
- 22:31Speaker 1: gave up five and runs, eight hits, struck out five,
- 22:34Speaker 1: but walked three and four innings of a six to
- 22:36Speaker 1: nothing lost to the White Sox. And I don't know
- 22:40Speaker 1: what you were seeing, Mark, but you know he had
- 22:42Speaker 1: those stiff neck in his previous star in Chicago. He
- 22:45Speaker 1: just looked really out of whack mechanically for me. On
- 22:47Speaker 1: that first inning, walks the first two batters, I think
- 22:50Speaker 1: nine of his first eleven pitches were balls, gives up
- 22:54Speaker 1: two runs in the first and he gives up a
- 22:55Speaker 1: two run homer to Muracami and a solo shot to
- 22:58Speaker 1: Vargas and the fourth and they go on to lose.
- 23:01Speaker 1: What did you see from Sorry in that game mark.
- 23:06Speaker 2: It. It didn't look like the version in the first
- 23:09Speaker 2: few games. And he's not going to be going a
- 23:14Speaker 2: Indiens and just shoving it against everybody every game. But no,
- 23:19Speaker 2: that's not realistic. But this one in particular looked he
- 23:23Speaker 2: was pouring sweat too, And it's not derogatory. It just
- 23:26Speaker 2: looked like he was really perspiring. And I don't know
- 23:29Speaker 2: if it was sixty two degrees or something.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Chili evening. Yeah, it was not warm at all.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I wonder if he warmed up in an extended fashion.
- 23:41Speaker 2: What he didn't have going was his knuckle curve, and
- 23:43Speaker 2: that's been a huge weapon for him. It didn't seem
- 23:45Speaker 2: like he had a feel for that. His fastball command
- 23:48Speaker 2: was spotty and getting behind a lot of accounts two
- 23:53Speaker 2: oh and when he did make a few mistakes, they
- 23:56Speaker 2: were all over it. So it was just it. It
- 24:00Speaker 2: was a start that that hopefully is just one of
- 24:02Speaker 2: those you categorize as kind of a C minus or something.
- 24:06Speaker 7: It.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You know, he set the bar so high to begin
- 24:08Speaker 2: the year that it stands out like a sore thumb,
- 24:10Speaker 2: whereas more of an average pitcher that might just be
- 24:13Speaker 2: kind of a shrug and kind of kept the team
- 24:16Speaker 2: in the and you know, it's not a great start,
- 24:17Speaker 2: but it wasn't a lead that couldn't be. You know,
- 24:21Speaker 2: you can scratch at it and maybe maybe get back
- 24:23Speaker 2: in that one. His credit, he says all the right things.
- 24:27Speaker 2: He seems accountable. I really like what I see out
- 24:30Speaker 2: of him, both on and off the field, and I
- 24:34Speaker 2: think he'll just kind of get back to what he
- 24:37Speaker 2: was doing, maybe not quite as good, but hopefully those
- 24:40Speaker 2: injuries really are behind him, because you do wonder a
- 24:43Speaker 2: little bit it kind of you know, what's going on
- 24:46Speaker 2: here that the neck, especially for a pitcher, because you
- 24:49Speaker 2: know you have to rely on a lot of different movements.
- 24:51Speaker 2: If that's bugging you at all, I can see that
- 24:54Speaker 2: being kind of a thing that that would disrupt your rhythm.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Yeah, we did a story specifically after the game about
- 25:00Speaker 1: out the neck if it was at all in issue.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Let's listen in on what do you have to say that's.
- 25:07Speaker 2: That's feel well? You know, stop nine, but I feel
- 25:11Speaker 2: very good. Did you feel different at the start?
- 25:14Speaker 7: Obviously we're not used to seeing me walk back to
- 25:16Speaker 7: back guys the beginning like that. You know, sometimes we
- 25:19Speaker 7: have Dolph line like today, and there's nothing we can
- 25:22Speaker 7: do about it. Just keep the head up and keep working,
- 25:27Speaker 7: focus on in this one.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Does your neck feel completely better now? Yeah?
- 25:30Speaker 7: Yeah, my neck feels way better. And you know, like
- 25:33Speaker 7: I say, stop nine.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Was it what do you think it was?
- 25:36Speaker 5: Not?
- 25:37Speaker 2: Early the walks? Was it like mechanics or was it
- 25:39Speaker 2: what do you think it was?
- 25:39Speaker 1: Gonna you too?
- 25:41Speaker 7: Just when it has those days, we can control those
- 25:44Speaker 7: right zone and they put in good swing to so
- 25:47Speaker 7: they are very good teams right now and you know,
- 25:51Speaker 7: put on very good swings and you see they were sould.
- 25:54Speaker 1: What are the challenges of facing the same team and
- 25:56Speaker 1: back to back starts.
- 25:58Speaker 7: It's a little bit tough. You place the seventeen the
- 26:01Speaker 7: alreadycy with God, but we had to continue a battle.
- 26:06Speaker 7: That's what I did, and I don't have the resolva
- 26:09Speaker 7: a battle to the end.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Has it been a challenge to I know, obviously the
- 26:12Speaker 3: first seventy he worked with Logan before he got hurt.
- 26:14Speaker 2: His last team worked with different catchers. Has that been
- 26:16Speaker 2: an adjustment teams working on a different catcher.
- 26:18Speaker 7: No, you know, like very good relationships with all the catchers.
- 26:22Speaker 7: There's just you know, dough outings and the last two outings,
- 26:25Speaker 7: and I just had to continue to focus and what
- 26:29Speaker 7: you're doing and forget about what happened today.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Well, I'll have to take sorry of his word about
- 26:38Speaker 1: his neck, but man, something just really didn't look right
- 26:41Speaker 1: in the first thing. Did he look physically okay to
- 26:43Speaker 1: you at least?
- 26:43Speaker 5: Mark?
- 26:44Speaker 1: Do you think he's fully transparent there?
- 26:49Speaker 2: Take him into his words? Sure, yeah, i'd like to.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean what we're still I think
- 26:54Speaker 2: waiting to hear on Kukuchi. So when it comes to
- 26:58Speaker 2: anything with you know, the medical stuff, I'm not sure
- 27:03Speaker 2: what I believe. But when it comes from the player,
- 27:05Speaker 2: he says he's fine, he's fine. He's a big guy,
- 27:08Speaker 2: he's tough guy. So you know, let's just just move
- 27:11Speaker 2: beyond this and still seth just have a nice inting
- 27:14Speaker 2: striking out three by the way, eight to two. So wow,
- 27:17Speaker 2: we are doing our best game, you guys informed.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Oh, a guy who is not doing fine on the
- 27:25Speaker 1: offensive side is Josh Low kind of a centerpiece winner edition.
- 27:31Speaker 1: You know, they gave up a good pitcher in brock
- 27:33Speaker 1: Burke to get this guy. As of Wednesday, hitting one
- 27:38Speaker 1: with a four eighty five ops four homers ten RBIs
- 27:42Speaker 1: twenty nine strikeouts, five walks in thirty three games. And
- 27:48Speaker 1: Mark found this stat earlier today. The worst twenty players
- 27:53Speaker 1: in MLB according to f War number five Josh low Mark.
- 28:01Speaker 1: It seems like this guy has gotten off to a
- 28:04Speaker 1: slow start, and I wonder if it's just a slow start,
- 28:11Speaker 1: or is this the Josh Lowe the Angels traded for.
- 28:17Speaker 2: In full Train. I wasn't looking for dirt on him.
- 28:19Speaker 2: I did come across. We do these shows almost entirely
- 28:24Speaker 2: on our own, so we are trying to to, you know,
- 28:28Speaker 2: provide the content, and that I came across that and
- 28:30Speaker 2: it kind of reaffirmed what we're looking at. It's a
- 28:33Speaker 2: guy that hasn't gotten anything going, and he had the
- 28:38Speaker 2: personal issues with his mom passing. So I don't think anyone'
- 28:41Speaker 2: said any appetite to get on him more than is necessary. However,
- 28:46Speaker 2: this is the major leagues, and I think sooner than
- 28:50Speaker 2: later it'd be nice to see the bat to start
- 28:52Speaker 2: start coming around. There was a play last night where
- 28:58Speaker 2: man on first I'm not to know the players offhand,
- 29:01Speaker 2: but there was a single to left field and it
- 29:03Speaker 2: was a pretty routine single and the runner on first
- 29:06Speaker 2: never stopped and challenged him playing left field to third base,
- 29:11Speaker 2: telling me immediately that there's not a lot of respect
- 29:13Speaker 2: for his throwing arm. And we've wondered consistently how healthy
- 29:17Speaker 2: is he? Is there an oblique thing still lingering. It
- 29:22Speaker 2: likely seems that there is. I don't know if it's
- 29:25Speaker 2: affecting both the throwing and the hitting, but the metrics
- 29:29Speaker 2: with the bat they are what they are. It seems
- 29:32Speaker 2: at this point that it's hard to justify continuing to
- 29:37Speaker 2: pencil his name in the lineup, especially because they're going
- 29:40Speaker 2: to take him out for defense with the lead almost
- 29:42Speaker 2: every time Bryce Tidosio as a couple hits at least today,
- 29:47Speaker 2: he's more than holding his own. He's a really good defender.
- 29:51Speaker 2: How he will fare with right handed pitching hasn't really
- 29:54Speaker 2: been explored all that much yet. But it's one of
- 29:58Speaker 2: those things that I think that you what really stings
- 30:01Speaker 2: is how well Rock Burk is doing. I think that
- 30:04Speaker 2: that's part of the deal with making a trade, and
- 30:06Speaker 2: you can look at any general manager is going to
- 30:10Speaker 2: be graded on his trades, and I think ultimately you
- 30:14Speaker 2: hope to probably win most, but the reality is a
- 30:18Speaker 2: push is good as well, what you don't want to
- 30:20Speaker 2: see is to be the one that looks like you
- 30:24Speaker 2: really didn't do as good a job. Now the Taylor Ward,
- 30:27Speaker 2: Grayson Rodriguez. I believe Grayson through five innings or was
- 30:31Speaker 2: scheduled to throw about five innings as well, So hopefully
- 30:34Speaker 2: he's coming back. Alec Manoa activated and so some of
- 30:38Speaker 2: these things, you know, these are guys that were acquired,
- 30:40Speaker 2: and we'll see what happens there. But as far as Low,
- 30:44Speaker 2: I don't know if there's any real points that would
- 30:48Speaker 2: make me optimistic to think it's going to get a
- 30:50Speaker 2: whole lot better, other than the hitting coaches putting in
- 30:53Speaker 2: a lot of work with him and getting some rhythm
- 30:56Speaker 2: back and really trying to channel the swing he had
- 30:59Speaker 2: in twenty two three. Right now, it seems kind of abbreviated.
- 31:02Speaker 2: A little jabby and not a lot of authority. Got
- 31:05Speaker 2: into one descenter the other day and it did drive
- 31:08Speaker 2: the center fielder back, but I'm not sure if that's
- 31:10Speaker 2: about his best bullet right now to that part of
- 31:12Speaker 2: the field. He just still has the pull home run power,
- 31:14Speaker 2: but you got to get that batting average up. He's
- 31:17Speaker 2: so far down that even salvaging a decent season with
- 31:21Speaker 2: this many at bats is going to be difficult.
- 31:23Speaker 7: All right.
- 31:24Speaker 1: We're gonna close on that note. Thanks for joining us
- 31:26Speaker 1: on Halo Territory.
