- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter twenty three, What is the Sanctuary? The scripture, which
- 0:05Speaker 1: above all others, had been both the foundation and the
- 0:08Speaker 1: central pillar of the advent faith, was the declaration unto
- 0:12Speaker 1: two thousand and three hundred days, then shall the Sanctuary
- 0:16Speaker 1: be cleansed. These had been familiar words to all believers
- 0:20Speaker 1: in the Lord's soon coming by the lips of thousands.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Was this prophecy repeated as the watchword of their faith.
- 0:28Speaker 1: All felt that upon the events therein foretold depended their
- 0:31Speaker 1: brightest expectations and most cherished hopes. These prophetic days had
- 0:36Speaker 1: been shown to terminate in the autumn of eighteen forty four.
- 0:40Speaker 1: In common with the rest of the Christian world, Adventists
- 0:43Speaker 1: then held that the earth, or some portion of it,
- 0:46Speaker 1: was the sanctuary. They understood that the cleansing of the
- 0:50Speaker 1: sanctuary was the purification of the earth by the fires
- 0:53Speaker 1: of the Last Great Day, and that this would take
- 0:55Speaker 1: place at the Second Advent. Hence the conclusion that Christ
- 1:00Speaker 1: returned to the earth in eighteen forty four, but the
- 1:03Speaker 1: appointed time had passed and the Lord had not appeared.
- 1:07Speaker 1: The believers knew that God's word could not fail. Their
- 1:11Speaker 1: interpretation of the prophecy must be at fault, But where
- 1:14Speaker 1: was the mistake? Many rashly cut the knot of difficulty
- 1:17Speaker 1: by denying that the twenty three hundred days ended in
- 1:20Speaker 1: eighteen forty four. No reason could be given for this,
- 1:24Speaker 1: except that Christ had not come at the time they
- 1:26Speaker 1: expected him. They argued that if the prophetic days had
- 1:30Speaker 1: ended in eighteen forty four, Christ would then have returned
- 1:33Speaker 1: to cleanse the sanctuary by the purification of the earth
- 1:35Speaker 1: by fire, and that since He had not come, the
- 1:38Speaker 1: days could not have ended. To accept this conclusion was
- 1:42Speaker 1: to renounce the former reckoning of the prophetic periods. The
- 1:47Speaker 1: twenty three hundred days had been found to begin when
- 1:49Speaker 1: the commandment of art Exerxes for the restoration and building
- 1:52Speaker 1: of Jerusalem went into effect in the autumn of b c.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Four fifty seven. Taking this as the start point, there
- 2:00Speaker 1: was perfect harmony in the application of all the events
- 2:03Speaker 1: foretold in the explanation of that period in Daniel nine
- 2:06Speaker 1: twenty five through twenty seven sixty nine weeks. The first
- 2:10Speaker 1: four hundred eighty three of the twenty three hundred years
- 2:13Speaker 1: were to reach to the Messiah, the anointed One, and
- 2:17Speaker 1: Christ's baptism in anointing by the Holy Spirit AD twenty
- 2:20Speaker 1: seven exactly fulfilled the specification. In the midst of the
- 2:25Speaker 1: seventieth week, Messiah was to be cut off three and
- 2:29Speaker 1: a half years after his baptism. Christ was crucified in
- 2:33Speaker 1: the spring of eighty thirty one. The seventy weeks or
- 2:36Speaker 1: four hundred ninety years were to pertain especially to the Jews.
- 2:41Speaker 1: At the expiration of this period, the nation sealed its
- 2:44Speaker 1: rejection of Christ by the persecution of his disciples, and
- 2:48Speaker 1: the apostles turned to the Gentiles eight thirty four, the
- 2:52Speaker 1: first four hundred ninety years of the twenty three hundred,
- 2:55Speaker 1: having then ended one thousand, eight hundred ten years, would
- 2:58Speaker 1: remain abs eight thirty four one thousand, eight hundred ten
- 3:02Speaker 1: years extend to eighteen forty four. Then said the Angel,
- 3:06Speaker 1: shall the sanctuary be cleansed. All the preceding specifications of
- 3:11Speaker 1: the prophecy had been unquestionably fulfilled at the time appointed
- 3:16Speaker 1: with this reckoning. All was clear and harmonious, except that
- 3:19Speaker 1: it was not seen that any event answering to the
- 3:22Speaker 1: cleansing of the sanctuary had taken place in eighteen forty four.
- 3:26Speaker 1: To deny that the days ended at that time was
- 3:29Speaker 1: to involve the whole question in confusion and to renounce
- 3:32Speaker 1: positions which had been established by unmistakable fulfillments of prophecy.
- 3:37Speaker 1: But God had led his people in the Great Advent movement,
- 3:41Speaker 1: His power and glory had attended the work, and he
- 3:43Speaker 1: would not permit it to end in darkness and disappointment,
- 3:46Speaker 1: to be reproached as a false and fanatical excitement. He
- 3:51Speaker 1: would not leave his word involved in doubt and uncertainty.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Though many abandoned their former reckoning of the prophetic periods
- 3:58Speaker 1: and denied the correctness of the movement based thereon, others
- 4:02Speaker 1: were unwilling to renounce points of faith and experience that
- 4:05Speaker 1: were sustained by the scriptures and by the witness of
- 4:08Speaker 1: the Spirit of God. They believed that they had adopted
- 4:12Speaker 1: sound principles of interpretation in their study of the prophecies,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and that it was their duty to hold fast the
- 4:18Speaker 1: truths already gained and to continue the same course of
- 4:21Speaker 1: biblical research. With earnest prayer. They reviewed their position and
- 4:26Speaker 1: studied the scriptures to discover their mistake. As they could
- 4:31Speaker 1: see no error in their reckoning of the prophetic periods,
- 4:34Speaker 1: they were led to examine more closely the subject of
- 4:37Speaker 1: the sanctuary. In their investigation, they learned that there is
- 4:41Speaker 1: no scripture evidence sustaining the popular view that the earth
- 4:44Speaker 1: is the sanctuary. But they found in the Bible a
- 4:47Speaker 1: full explanation of the subject of the sanctuary, its nature, location,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and services, the testimony of the sacred writers being so
- 4:55Speaker 1: clear and ample as to place the matter beyond all question.
- 4:59Speaker 1: The apostle Paul, in the Epistle to the Hebrews says, then,
- 5:02Speaker 1: verily the first Covenant had also ordinances of divine service
- 5:06Speaker 1: and a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made
- 5:10Speaker 1: the first wherein was the candlestick and the table and
- 5:13Speaker 1: the showbread, which is called the sanctuary, and after the
- 5:17Speaker 1: second veil the tabernacle, which is called the holiest of all,
- 5:21Speaker 1: which had the golden censer and the ark of the
- 5:23Speaker 1: Covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden
- 5:27Speaker 1: pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that butted, and
- 5:30Speaker 1: the tables of the Covenant, and over it the cheryobim
- 5:33Speaker 1: of glory, shadowing the mercy seat. The sanctuary to which
- 5:38Speaker 1: Paul here refers was the tabernacle built by Moses at
- 5:41Speaker 1: the command of God as the earthly dwelling place of
- 5:44Speaker 1: the most High. Let them make me a sanctuary that
- 5:47Speaker 1: I may dwell among them, was the direction given to
- 5:50Speaker 1: Moses while in the mount with God. The Israelites were
- 5:54Speaker 1: journeying through the wilderness, and the tabernacle was so constructed
- 5:58Speaker 1: that it could be removed from place to go. Yet
- 6:01Speaker 1: it was a structure of great magnificence. Its walls consisted
- 6:05Speaker 1: of upright boards heavily plated with gold and set in
- 6:08Speaker 1: sockets of silver, while the roof was formed of a
- 6:12Speaker 1: series of curtains or coverings, the outer of skins, the
- 6:15Speaker 1: innermost of fine linen, beautifully wrought with figures of cherubin
- 6:20Speaker 1: besides the outer court, which contained the altar of burnt offering.
- 6:24Speaker 1: The tabernacle itself consisted of two apartments, called the Holy
- 6:27Speaker 1: and the Most Holy Place, separated by a rich and
- 6:31Speaker 1: beautiful curtain or veil. A similar veil closed the entrance
- 6:35Speaker 1: to the first apartment. In the Holy Place was the
- 6:38Speaker 1: candlestick on the south, with its seven lamps, giving light
- 6:41Speaker 1: to the sanctuary both by day and by night. On
- 6:44Speaker 1: the north stood the table of showbread, and before the
- 6:47Speaker 1: veil separating the holly from the most Holy was the
- 6:50Speaker 1: golden altar of incense, from which the cloud of Fragrance,
- 6:54Speaker 1: with the prayers of Israel was daily ascending before God.
- 6:58Speaker 1: In the most holy place stood the Ark, a chest
- 7:01Speaker 1: of precious wood overlaid with gold, the depository of the
- 7:04Speaker 1: two Tables of Stone, upon which God had inscribed the
- 7:07Speaker 1: Law of Ten Commandments. Above the Ark, and forming the
- 7:12Speaker 1: cover to the sacred chest, was the Mercy Seat, a
- 7:15Speaker 1: magnificent piece of workmanship, surmounted by two cheriobin, one at
- 7:19Speaker 1: each end, and all rot of solid gold. In this apartment,
- 7:24Speaker 1: the divine presence was manifested in the cloud of glory
- 7:27Speaker 1: between the cheriobin. After the settlement of the Hebrews and Canaan,
- 7:31Speaker 1: the Tabernacle was replaced by the Temple of Solomon, which,
- 7:35Speaker 1: though a permanent structure and upon a larger scale, observed
- 7:38Speaker 1: the same proportions and was similarly furnished. In this form.
- 7:43Speaker 1: The sanctuary existed except while it lay in ruins in
- 7:46Speaker 1: Daniel's time, until its destruction by the Romans in eighty seventy.
- 7:51Speaker 1: This is the only sanctuary that ever existed on the
- 7:54Speaker 1: earth of which the Bible gives any information. This was
- 7:58Speaker 1: declared by Paul to be the same ctuary of the
- 8:00Speaker 1: First Covenant, but has the New Covenant no sanctuary. Turning
- 8:05Speaker 1: again to the Book of Hebrews, the Seekers for Truth
- 8:08Speaker 1: found that the existence of a second or New Covenant
- 8:11Speaker 1: sanctuary was implied in the words of Paul already quoted.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Then Verily, the First Covenant had also ordinances of divine
- 8:19Speaker 1: service and a worldly sanctuary, and the use of the
- 8:23Speaker 1: word also intimates that Paul has before made mention of
- 8:26Speaker 1: this sanctuary. Turning back to the beginning of the previous chapter,
- 8:31Speaker 1: they read, now of the things which we have spoken,
- 8:34Speaker 1: this is the sum we have such an high priest
- 8:36Speaker 1: who has set on the right hand of the throne
- 8:38Speaker 1: of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister of the
- 8:41Speaker 1: sanctuary and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched
- 8:45Speaker 1: and not man. Here is revealed the sanctuary of the
- 8:49Speaker 1: New Covenant. The sanctuary of the First Covenant was pitched
- 8:53Speaker 1: by man, built by Moses. This is pitched by the Lord,
- 8:57Speaker 1: not by man. In that same sanctuary. The earthly priests
- 9:01Speaker 1: performed their service in this Christ, our great high priest
- 9:05Speaker 1: ministers at God's right hand. One sanctuary was on earth,
- 9:09Speaker 1: the other is in heaven. Further, the tabernacle built by
- 9:13Speaker 1: Moses was made after a pattern. The Lord directed him
- 9:18Speaker 1: according to all that I show THEE after the pattern
- 9:21Speaker 1: of the tabernacle and the pattern of all the instruments thereof,
- 9:24Speaker 1: Even so shall ye make it. And again the charge
- 9:28Speaker 1: was given, look that thou make them after their pattern,
- 9:30Speaker 1: which was showed THEE in the mount. And Paul says
- 9:34Speaker 1: that the first Tabernacle was a figure for the time
- 9:36Speaker 1: then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices,
- 9:40Speaker 1: That its holy places were patterns of things in the heavens,
- 9:44Speaker 1: that the priests who offered gifts according to the law,
- 9:47Speaker 1: served unto the example and shadow of heavenly things. And
- 9:50Speaker 1: that Christ is not entered into the holy places made
- 9:53Speaker 1: with hands, which are the figures of the True, but
- 9:56Speaker 1: into Heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God.
- 9:59Speaker 1: For aid. The sanctuary in Heaven in which Jesus ministers
- 10:04Speaker 1: in our behalf, is the great original of which the
- 10:07Speaker 1: sanctuary built by Moses was a copy. God placed his
- 10:11Speaker 1: spirit upon the builders of the earthly sanctuary. The artistic
- 10:15Speaker 1: skill displayed in its construction was a manifestation of divine wisdom.
- 10:20Speaker 1: The walls had the appearance of massive gold, reflecting in
- 10:23Speaker 1: every direction the light of the seven lamps of the
- 10:26Speaker 1: golden candlestick. The table of showbread, and the altar of
- 10:30Speaker 1: incense glittered like burnished gold. The gorgeous curtain which formed
- 10:35Speaker 1: the ceiling, inwrought with figures of angels in blue and
- 10:38Speaker 1: purple and scarlet, added to the beauty of the scene.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And beyond the second veil was the Holy Chicaina, the
- 10:45Speaker 1: visible manifestation of God's glory, before which none but the
- 10:49Speaker 1: high priest could enter and live. The matchless splendor of
- 10:53Speaker 1: the earthly tabernacle reflected to human vision the glories of
- 10:56Speaker 1: that heavenly temple where Christ, our forerunner, ministers for us
- 11:00Speaker 1: before the Throne of God, the abiding place of the
- 11:04Speaker 1: King of Kings, where thousand thousands minister unto him, and
- 11:08Speaker 1: ten thousand times ten thousand stand before him, That temple
- 11:11Speaker 1: filled with the glory of the eternal Throne, where seraphim
- 11:15Speaker 1: its shining guardians veil their faces in adoration. Could find
- 11:19Speaker 1: in the most magnificent structure ever reared by human hands,
- 11:23Speaker 1: but a faint reflection of its vastness and glory. Yet
- 11:27Speaker 1: important truths concerning the Heavenly Sanctuary and the great work
- 11:30Speaker 1: there carried forward for man's redemption, were taught by the
- 11:33Speaker 1: Earthly Sanctuary and its services. The holy places of the
- 11:38Speaker 1: Sanctuary in Heaven are represented by the two apartments in
- 11:41Speaker 1: the Sanctuary on Earth. As in vision, the apostle John
- 11:45Speaker 1: was granted a view of the Temple of God in Heaven.
- 11:48Speaker 1: He beheld there seven lamps of fire burning before the throne.
- 11:53Speaker 1: He saw an angel having a golden censer, and there
- 11:56Speaker 1: was given unto him much incense, that he should offer
- 11:59Speaker 1: it with the prayers of all saints, upon the golden altar,
- 12:01Speaker 1: which was before the throne. Here the prophet was permitted
- 12:05Speaker 1: to behold the first apartment of the Sanctuary in Heaven,
- 12:09Speaker 1: and he saw there the seven lamps of fire and
- 12:11Speaker 1: the Golden Altar, represented by the golden candlestick and the
- 12:15Speaker 1: altar of incense. In the Sanctuary on Earth, again, the
- 12:19Speaker 1: Temple of God was opened, and he looked within the
- 12:21Speaker 1: inner veil upon the holy of Holies. Here he beheld
- 12:25Speaker 1: the ark of his Testament, represented by the sacred chest
- 12:28Speaker 1: constructed by Moses to contain the Law of God. Thus,
- 12:33Speaker 1: those who were studying the subject, found indisputable proof of
- 12:36Speaker 1: the existence of a sanctuary in heaven. Moses made the
- 12:40Speaker 1: earthly sanctuary after a pattern which was shown him. Paul
- 12:44Speaker 1: teaches that that pattern was the true sanctuary, which is
- 12:47Speaker 1: in heaven, and John testifies that he saw it in heaven.
- 12:52Speaker 1: In the Temple. In Heaven, the dwelling place of God,
- 12:55Speaker 1: his throne is established in righteousness and judgment, in the
- 12:59Speaker 1: most holy place, His Law, the great rule of right
- 13:02Speaker 1: by which all mankind are tested, The arc that enshrines
- 13:06Speaker 1: the tables of the law, is covered with the mercy seat,
- 13:09Speaker 1: before which Christ pleads his blood in the sinner's behalf.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Thus has represented the union of justice and mercy in
- 13:17Speaker 1: the plan of human redemption. This union, infinite wisdom alone
- 13:21Speaker 1: could devise, and infinite power accomplish. It is a union
- 13:25Speaker 1: that fills all heaven with wonder and adoration. The Cherubim
- 13:30Speaker 1: of the Earthly Sanctuary, looking reverently down upon the mercy Seat,
- 13:34Speaker 1: represent the interest with which the heavenly host contemplate the
- 13:37Speaker 1: work of redemption. This is the mystery of mercy into
- 13:41Speaker 1: which angels desire to look, that God can be just
- 13:44Speaker 1: while he justifies the repenting sinner and renews his intercourse
- 13:48Speaker 1: with the fallen race. That Christ could stoop to raise
- 13:51Speaker 1: unnumbered multitudes from the abyss of ruin and clothe them
- 13:55Speaker 1: with the spotless garments of his own righteousness, to unite
- 13:58Speaker 1: with angels who have never fallen, and to dwell forever
- 14:01Speaker 1: in the presence of God. The work of Christ as
- 14:04Speaker 1: man's intercessor is presented in that beautiful prophecy of Zechariah
- 14:08Speaker 1: concerning him whose name is the Branch, says the prophet,
- 14:13Speaker 1: he shall build the temple of the Lord, and he
- 14:15Speaker 1: shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon
- 14:18Speaker 1: his the Father's throne, and he shall be a priest
- 14:21Speaker 1: upon his throne, and the counsel of peace shall be
- 14:24Speaker 1: between them both. He shall build the Temple of the Lord.
- 14:29Speaker 1: By his sacrifice and mediation. Christ is both the foundation
- 14:33Speaker 1: and the builder of the Church of God. The apostle
- 14:36Speaker 1: Paul points to him as the chief corner stone in
- 14:39Speaker 1: whom all the building fidly framed together groweth unto a
- 14:43Speaker 1: holy temple in the Lord, in whom ye also, he says,
- 14:47Speaker 1: are builded together for a habitation of God. Through the spirit,
- 14:51Speaker 1: he shall bear the glory to Christ belongs the glory
- 14:55Speaker 1: of redemption for the fallen race through the eternal ages.
- 15:00Speaker 1: The song of the ransomed ones will be unto him
- 15:03Speaker 1: that loved us and washed us from our sins in
- 15:05Speaker 1: his own blood. To him be glory and dominion forever
- 15:08Speaker 1: and ever he shall sit and rule upon his throne,
- 15:13Speaker 1: and he shall be a priest upon his throne. Not
- 15:16Speaker 1: now upon the throne of his glory, The kingdom of
- 15:19Speaker 1: Glory has not yet been nushered in. Not until his
- 15:22Speaker 1: work as a mediator shall be ended, will God give
- 15:25Speaker 1: unto him the throne of his father David, a kingdom
- 15:28Speaker 1: of which there shall be no end. As a priest.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Christ is now set down with the Father in his throne,
- 15:35Speaker 1: upon the throne with the eternal self existent. One is
- 15:38Speaker 1: he who hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows,
- 15:41Speaker 1: who was in all points tempted, like as we are,
- 15:44Speaker 1: yet without sin, that he might be able to succor
- 15:47Speaker 1: them that are tempted. If any man sin, We have
- 15:51Speaker 1: an advocate with the Father. His intercession is that of
- 15:54Speaker 1: a pierced and broken body, of a spotless life, the
- 15:58Speaker 1: wounded hands, the pierced's sins, the marred feet plead for
- 16:02Speaker 1: fallen man, whose redemption was purchased at such infinite cost,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and the council of peace shall be between them both.
- 16:10Speaker 1: The love of the Father no less than of the Son,
- 16:13Speaker 1: is the fountain of salvation for the lost race. Said
- 16:17Speaker 1: Jesus to his disciples, before he went away. I say
- 16:21Speaker 1: not unto you that I will pray the Father for you.
- 16:23Speaker 1: For the Father himself loveth you. God was in Christ
- 16:27Speaker 1: reconciling the world unto himself, and in the ministration in
- 16:32Speaker 1: the sanctuary above, the council of peace shall be between
- 16:35Speaker 1: them both. God so loved the world that he gave
- 16:39Speaker 1: his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should
- 16:43Speaker 1: not perish, but have everlasting life. The question what is
- 16:47Speaker 1: the sanctuary is clearly answered in the scriptures. The term
- 16:52Speaker 1: sanctuary as used in the Bible refers first to the
- 16:54Speaker 1: tabernacle built by Moses as a pattern of heavenly things,
- 16:59Speaker 1: and secondly to the true Tabernacle in Heaven, to which
- 17:02Speaker 1: the earthly sanctuary pointed at the death of Christ, the
- 17:07Speaker 1: typical service ended. The true Tabernacle in Heaven is the
- 17:10Speaker 1: sanctuary of the New Covenant, and as the prophecy of
- 17:14Speaker 1: Daniel eight fourteen is fulfilled. In this dispensation, the sanctuary
- 17:19Speaker 1: to which it refers must be the sanctuary of the
- 17:21Speaker 1: New Covenant. At the termination of the twenty three hundred
- 17:25Speaker 1: days in eighteen forty four, there had been no sanctuary
- 17:28Speaker 1: on earth for many centuries. Thus the prophecy unto two
- 17:33Speaker 1: thousand and three hundred days, then shall the sanctuary be
- 17:36Speaker 1: cleansed unquestionably points to the sanctuary in heaven. But the
- 17:41Speaker 1: most important question remains to be answered. What is the
- 17:45Speaker 1: cleansing of the sanctuary? That there was such a service
- 17:49Speaker 1: in connection with the earthly sanctuary is stated in the
- 17:52Speaker 1: Old Testament scriptures, but can there be anything in heaven
- 17:56Speaker 1: to be cleansed? In Hebrews nine, the cleansing of both
- 18:00Speaker 1: the earthly and the heavenly sanctuary is plainly taught. Almost
- 18:04Speaker 1: all things are by the law purged with blood, and
- 18:07Speaker 1: without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore
- 18:12Speaker 1: necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should
- 18:14Speaker 1: be purified with these the blood of animals. But the
- 18:17Speaker 1: heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these, even the
- 18:22Speaker 1: precious blood of Christ. The cleansing, both in the typical
- 18:26Speaker 1: and in the real service, must be accomplished with blood,
- 18:30Speaker 1: in the former, with the blood of animals, in the latter,
- 18:32Speaker 1: with the blood of Christ. Paul states as the reason
- 18:36Speaker 1: why this cleansing must be performed with blood, that without
- 18:40Speaker 1: shedding of blood is no remission. Remission or putting away
- 18:44Speaker 1: of sin is the work to be accomplished. But how
- 18:48Speaker 1: could there be sin connected with the sanctuary, either in
- 18:51Speaker 1: heaven or upon the earth. This may be learned by
- 18:54Speaker 1: reference to the symbolic service. For the priests who officiated
- 18:58Speaker 1: on earth served unto the example and shadow of heavenly things.
- 19:03Speaker 1: The ministration of the earthly sanctuary consisted of two divisions.
- 19:07Speaker 1: The priests ministered daily in the Holy Place, while once
- 19:11Speaker 1: a year the High Priest performed a special work of
- 19:13Speaker 1: atonement in the Most Holy For the cleansing of the sanctuary,
- 19:18Speaker 1: day by day, the repentant sinner brought his offering to
- 19:21Speaker 1: the door of the tabernacle, and, placing his hand upon
- 19:23Speaker 1: the victim's head, confessed his sins, thus in figure transferring
- 19:28Speaker 1: them from himself to the innocent sacrifice. The animal was
- 19:32Speaker 1: then slain without shedding of blood, says the apostle, there
- 19:36Speaker 1: is no remission of sin. The life of the flesh
- 19:40Speaker 1: is in the blood. The broken law of God demanded
- 19:44Speaker 1: the life of the transgressor the blood representing the forfeited
- 19:48Speaker 1: life of the sinner whose guilt the victim bore, was
- 19:51Speaker 1: carried by the priest into the Holy Place and sprinkled
- 19:54Speaker 1: before the veil, behind which was the ark containing the
- 19:58Speaker 1: law that the sinner had transgressed. By this ceremony, the
- 20:02Speaker 1: sin was, through the blood transferred in figure to the sanctuary.
- 20:07Speaker 1: In some cases, the blood was not taken into the
- 20:09Speaker 1: Holy Place, but the flesh was then to be eaten
- 20:12Speaker 1: by the priest. As Moses directed the sons of erin saying,
- 20:16Speaker 1: God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of
- 20:18Speaker 1: the congregation. Both ceremonies alike symbolized the transfer of the
- 20:23Speaker 1: sin from the penitent to the sanctuary. Such was the
- 20:27Speaker 1: work that went on day by day throughout the year.
- 20:31Speaker 1: The sins of Israel were thus transferred to the sanctuary,
- 20:34Speaker 1: and a special work became necessary for their removal. God
- 20:39Speaker 1: commanded that an atonement be made for each of the
- 20:41Speaker 1: sacred apartments. He shall make an atonement for the Holy
- 20:45Speaker 1: Place because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel,
- 20:49Speaker 1: and because of their transgressions in all their sins. And
- 20:53Speaker 1: so shall he do for the Tabernacle of the congregation
- 20:56Speaker 1: that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
- 21:00Speaker 1: An atonement was also to be made for the altar,
- 21:02Speaker 1: to cleanse it and hallow it from the uncleanness of
- 21:05Speaker 1: the children of Israel. Once a year, on the great
- 21:09Speaker 1: Day of Atonement, the priest entered the most holy place
- 21:11Speaker 1: for the cleansing of the sanctuary. The work there performed
- 21:15Speaker 1: completed the yearly round of ministration. On the day of Atonement,
- 21:20Speaker 1: two kids of the goats were brought to the door
- 21:22Speaker 1: of the tabernacle, and lots were cast upon them, one
- 21:25Speaker 1: lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat.
- 21:29Speaker 1: The goat upon which fell the lot for the Lord
- 21:31Speaker 1: was to be slain as a sin offering for the people,
- 21:34Speaker 1: and the priest was to bring his blood within the
- 21:37Speaker 1: veil and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat. And before
- 21:40Speaker 1: the mercy seat, the blood was also to be sprinkled
- 21:43Speaker 1: upon the altar of incense that was before the veil,
- 21:47Speaker 1: And aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head
- 21:49Speaker 1: of the live goat, and confess over him all the
- 21:52Speaker 1: iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions
- 21:56Speaker 1: in all their sins, putting them upon the head of
- 21:58Speaker 1: the goat, and shall send him away by the hand
- 22:01Speaker 1: of a fit man, into the wilderness, and the goat
- 22:04Speaker 1: shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land
- 22:07Speaker 1: not inhabited. The scapegoat came no more into the camp
- 22:11Speaker 1: of Israel, and the man who led him away was
- 22:13Speaker 1: required to wash himself and his clothing with water before
- 22:17Speaker 1: returning to the camp. The whole ceremony was designed to
- 22:21Speaker 1: impress the Israelites with the holiness of God and his
- 22:24Speaker 1: abhorrence of sin, and further to show them that they
- 22:27Speaker 1: could not come in contact with sin without becoming polluted.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Every man was required to afflict his soul while this
- 22:34Speaker 1: work of atonement was going forward. All business was to
- 22:38Speaker 1: be laid aside, and the whole congregation of Israel were
- 22:41Speaker 1: to spend the day in solemn humiliation before God, with prayer, fasting,
- 22:46Speaker 1: and deep searching of heart. Important truths concerning the atonement
- 22:50Speaker 1: are taught by the typical service. A substitute was accepted
- 22:55Speaker 1: in the sinner stead, but the sin was not canceled
- 22:58Speaker 1: by the blood of the victim. A means was thus
- 23:01Speaker 1: provided by which it was transferred to the sanctuary. By
- 23:05Speaker 1: the offering of blood, the sinner acknowledged the authority of
- 23:08Speaker 1: the law, confessed his guilt and transgression, and expressed his
- 23:12Speaker 1: desire for pardon to faith in a redeemer to come.
- 23:16Speaker 1: But he was not yet entirely released from the condemnation
- 23:19Speaker 1: of the law. On the day of Atonement, the High Priest,
- 23:23Speaker 1: having taken an offering from the congregation, went to the
- 23:26Speaker 1: most holy place with the blood of this offering and
- 23:29Speaker 1: sprinkled it upon the mercy seat directly over the law,
- 23:33Speaker 1: to make satisfaction for its claims. Then, in his character
- 23:37Speaker 1: of mediator, he took the sins upon himself and bore
- 23:41Speaker 1: them from the sanctuary. Placing his hands upon the head
- 23:45Speaker 1: of the scapegoat, he confessed over him all these sins,
- 23:49Speaker 1: thus in figure, transferring them from himself to the goat.
- 23:53Speaker 1: The goat then bore them away, and they were regarded
- 23:56Speaker 1: as forever separated from the people. Such as the service
- 24:00Speaker 1: performed unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, and
- 24:05Speaker 1: what was done in type in the ministration of the
- 24:07Speaker 1: earthly sanctuary is done in reality in the ministration of
- 24:11Speaker 1: the heavenly Sanctuary. After his ascension, our Savior began his
- 24:16Speaker 1: work as our high priest, says Paul. Christ is not
- 24:20Speaker 1: entered into the holy places made with hands, which are
- 24:23Speaker 1: the figures of the True, but into Heaven itself, now
- 24:27Speaker 1: to appear in the presence of God. For us. The
- 24:30Speaker 1: ministration of the priest throughout the year in the first
- 24:33Speaker 1: apartment of the Sanctuary, within the veil which formed the
- 24:36Speaker 1: door and separated the holy place from the outer court,
- 24:40Speaker 1: represents the work of ministration upon which Christ entered at
- 24:43Speaker 1: his ascension. It was the work of the priest in
- 24:47Speaker 1: the daily administration to present before God the blood of
- 24:50Speaker 1: the sin, offering also the incense, which ascended with the
- 24:53Speaker 1: prayers of Israel. So did Christ plead his blood before
- 24:57Speaker 1: the Father in behalf of sinners, and present afore him
- 25:00Speaker 1: also with the precious fragrance of his own righteousness, the
- 25:04Speaker 1: prayers of penitent believers. Such was the work of ministration
- 25:08Speaker 1: in the first apartment of the Sanctuary in Heaven. Thither
- 25:12Speaker 1: the faith of Christ's disciples followed him as he ascended
- 25:15Speaker 1: from their sight here their hopes centered, which hope we
- 25:20Speaker 1: have said Paul, as an anchor of the soul, both
- 25:23Speaker 1: sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil,
- 25:27Speaker 1: whither the forerunner is for us entered even Jesus made
- 25:31Speaker 1: an high priest forever, neither by the blood of goats
- 25:35Speaker 1: and calves, but by his own blood. He entered in
- 25:37Speaker 1: once into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
- 25:43Speaker 1: For eighteen centuries, this work of ministration continued in the
- 25:46Speaker 1: first apartment of the sanctuary. The blood of Christ pleaded
- 25:51Speaker 1: in behalf of penitent believers secured their pardon and acceptance
- 25:55Speaker 1: with the Father, yet their sins still remained upon the
- 25:58Speaker 1: books of record. As in the typical service, there was
- 26:01Speaker 1: a work of atonement at the close of the year.
- 26:04Speaker 1: So before Christ's work for the redemption of men is completed,
- 26:08Speaker 1: there is a work of atonement for the removal of
- 26:10Speaker 1: sin from the sanctuary. This is the service which began
- 26:14Speaker 1: when the twenty three hundred days ended. At that time,
- 26:18Speaker 1: as foretold by Daniel the Prophet, our High Priest entered
- 26:21Speaker 1: the most Holy to perform the last division of his
- 26:24Speaker 1: solemn work to cleanse the sanctuary. As anciently the sins
- 26:29Speaker 1: of the people were by faith placed upon the sin
- 26:31Speaker 1: offering and through its blood transferred in figure to the
- 26:35Speaker 1: earthly sanctuary, so in the New Covenant, the sins of
- 26:38Speaker 1: the repentant are by faith placed upon Christ and transferred
- 26:42Speaker 1: in fact to the heavenly sanctuary. And as the typical
- 26:46Speaker 1: cleansing of the earthly was accomplished by the removal of
- 26:49Speaker 1: the sins by which it had been polluted, so the
- 26:51Speaker 1: actual cleansing of the heavenly is to be accomplished by
- 26:55Speaker 1: the removal or blotting out of the sins which are
- 26:57Speaker 1: there recorded. But before this can be accomplished, there must
- 27:02Speaker 1: be an examination of the books of record to determine who,
- 27:05Speaker 1: through repentance of sin and faith in Christ, are entitled
- 27:09Speaker 1: to the benefits of His atonement. The cleansing of the
- 27:12Speaker 1: sanctuary therefore involves a work of investigation, a work of judgment.
- 27:18Speaker 1: This work must be performed prior to the coming of
- 27:21Speaker 1: Christ to redeem his people, for when he comes, his
- 27:24Speaker 1: reward is with him to give to every man according
- 27:26Speaker 1: to his works. Thus, those who followed in the light
- 27:30Speaker 1: of the prophetic words saw that instead of coming to
- 27:33Speaker 1: the earth at the termination of the twenty three hundred
- 27:35Speaker 1: Days in eighteen forty four. Christ then entered the most
- 27:39Speaker 1: holy place of the Heavenly Sanctuary to perform the closing
- 27:42Speaker 1: work of atonement preparatory to his coming. It was seen
- 27:47Speaker 1: also that while the sin offering pointed to Christ as
- 27:49Speaker 1: a sacrifice and the High Priest represented Christ as a mediator,
- 27:54Speaker 1: the scapegoat typified Satan, the author of sin, upon whom
- 27:57Speaker 1: the sins of the truly penitent will finally be placed.
- 28:01Speaker 1: When the High Priest, by virtue of the blood of
- 28:03Speaker 1: the sin offering, removed the sins from the sanctuary, he
- 28:07Speaker 1: placed them upon the scapegoat. When Christ, by virtue of
- 28:10Speaker 1: his own blood, removes the sins of his people from
- 28:13Speaker 1: the Heavenly Sanctuary at the close of his ministration, he
- 28:17Speaker 1: will place them upon Satan, who, in the execution of
- 28:20Speaker 1: the judgment, must bear the final penalty. The scapegoat was
- 28:25Speaker 1: sent away into a land not inhabited, never to come
- 28:28Speaker 1: again into the congregation of Israel. So will Satan be
- 28:32Speaker 1: forever banished from the presence of God and his people,
- 28:35Speaker 1: and he will be blotted from existence in the final
- 28:38Speaker 1: destruction of sin and sinners, end of chapter twenty three,
