- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show His love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello friends. We are going through Book 5 of
- 0:18Psalms together and we are in Psalm 1:20 today, a brand new
- 0:24Psalm. For the last 22 episodes, I have
- 0:27been in Psalm 119. And so it feels like a new day.
- 0:31I can breathe a little freer. And we're going to read through
- 0:35Psalm 120. This, this Psalm is labeled as a
- 0:40song of a sense, a song of a sense like you ascend a
- 0:45mountain. And these songs would often be
- 0:48used during the pilgrimages to Jerusalem for the different
- 0:54festivals and holy days that the Jewish people had.
- 0:59So you can think in particular the Feast of Tabernacles or the
- 1:03Feast of Booths, Feast of Tents is what's that?
- 1:07What that event is sometimes called.
- 1:10Then you had the Feast of Firstfruits, which would be kind
- 1:15of a seasonal celebration when you got in your, your first, you
- 1:19know, crops and stuff for the year.
- 1:22And then you had, of course, the Day of Atonement and Passover,
- 1:28some of those different things. So there were always great
- 1:31things happening. The children of Israel had no
- 1:34shortage of holy days or times in which they would gather
- 1:38together, but in particular three different times a year.
- 1:42They were all encouraged as the people of God, you need to come
- 1:46to Jerusalem and worship the Lord, give your offerings and
- 1:50your tithes. And so this would be one of the
- 1:53songs that those people would sing as they were headed to
- 1:57Jerusalem. Verse one says this.
- 2:00In my distress I called to Yahweh and he answered me.
- 2:05Yahweh, rescue me from lying lips and a deceitful tongue.
- 2:10What will He give you and what will He do to you, you deceitful
- 2:14tongue? A warrior's sharp arrows with
- 2:17burning charcoal. What misery that I have stayed
- 2:21in Meshach, that I have lived among the tents of Kedar.
- 2:26I have dwelt too long with those who hate peace.
- 2:30I am for peace, but when I speak they are for war.
- 2:35All right, if you like me, are like, what in the world is going
- 2:40on there? I do not know these places.
- 2:42I don't know the geography. I am going to show you my my
- 2:49Bible study program just gave up the ghost on me, hopefully very
- 2:54temporarily, but I'm going to pull that up real once more real
- 2:58quick. So Psalm 120 and the prayer here
- 3:02is God, I need you to intervene because there are liars and
- 3:09warmongers that are here and I am trying to advocate for peace.
- 3:14I'm trying to advocate for your way.
- 3:16But God, I believe that you are going to take care of those that
- 3:20do wrong. So let's begin at verse #1 and
- 3:26then we will, and then we'll go through there.
- 3:29So first one, in my distress I called to Yahweh and He answered
- 3:33me. I'm so thankful that when we
- 3:35call the God, He hears. He is not distant, He has not
- 3:39forgotten us. He is just the one that is
- 3:41constantly there that we can rely on in every single season.
- 3:47And just because we're going through distress doesn't mean
- 3:49that God isn't there or that He doesn't care.
- 3:52It's in our distress that we're able to see God work in ways
- 3:56that we never would have or never could have otherwise.
- 4:00So in your distress, call to God and He will answer you.
- 4:03He will not always answer you saying yes.
- 4:07Everything that you just prayed I'm going to do.
- 4:09Now in my life, there have been times where I've prayed for
- 4:13something and God came through in a massive way for it, and He
- 4:19did the things that I asked Him to do.
- 4:21And I'm really thankful for those times.
- 4:23I'm also really thankful for the times that God told me no.
- 4:26Both of those are incredibly valuable.
- 4:29Verse #2 Here is what He called to Yahweh.
- 4:34Here was the prayer. Yahweh rescue me from lying lips
- 4:38and a deceitful tongue. So this would kind of talk about
- 4:42the spread of gossip or baseless rumors.
- 4:45It is that people are lying in regards to this person.
- 4:52I as I've interacted more and more, both in my life in being
- 4:58around other people, frankly just as an adult, and through
- 5:03reading more and more scripture, I have been blown away by how
- 5:10real and applicable scripture is, and also just how how goofy
- 5:15it is to me, if I can use that phrase, how goofy it is to me.
- 5:19How often people lie. I was very often encouraged from
- 5:27from my youngest days to speak the truth, even if it would get
- 5:33me in trouble. It would be far worse if I lied.
- 5:37You can think even today, if you get pulled over by the cops, you
- 5:44you would do much better to just shoot straight with them.
- 5:48Be on the level, Don't lie to them, because then you will be
- 5:51in much greater trouble. If you lie in a court, you're
- 5:55going to be in a lot of trouble, even more so than if you just.
- 6:03Yeah, if you lie, you'll be in more trouble than you would be
- 6:05if you just did whatever crime was there and you just fessed up
- 6:10to it. You will be in more trouble if
- 6:11you lie about it. And so here the psalmist says,
- 6:15asking God, there is gossip, there's slander, there's lies,
- 6:19there's deceit going on. And so, God, would you rescue
- 6:22me? And then verses 3 and 4 is is a
- 6:28hilarious visual picture for me. So what will he give you and
- 6:34what will he do to you, you deceitful tongue?
- 6:36So it's the person praying God deal with these deceitful
- 6:39tongues. And then he goes, all right, I'm
- 6:41going to imagine how God's going to get you.
- 6:44And then verse 4 says a warrior's sharp arrows with
- 6:48burning charcoal here. This is charcoal that's derived
- 6:55from a hard stemmed plant called a broom tree.
- 7:00So this is the kind of tree that Elijah sits under when he's
- 7:05like, oh man, you know, Jezebel wants to kill me again.
- 7:09And I don't know any other people that serve God.
- 7:12And so I'm just going to die. And God's like, dude, no, you
- 7:16just need to eat some food, spend some time with me.
- 7:18I'm going to give you a new mission.
- 7:20Everything's fine. So here verse 4, therefore there
- 7:24is this thought for the soulmist that they say what's God going
- 7:30to do? He is going to shoot the tongue
- 7:33with an arrow with burning charcoal.
- 7:36It's literally like a lit fiery arrow that is going to attack
- 7:41this tongue of falsehood. I don't know about you if I'm
- 7:46writing Scripture, especially Scripture, knowing the God that
- 7:51I know, I am going to be like, oh, he will let you know about
- 7:57your failures. What's he going to do to you?
- 8:00Tong he will silence you and he will cause you to say good
- 8:04things. I feel like that's the very, you
- 8:07know, quote UN quote spiritual answer.
- 8:11But here there's just a rawness of this psalmist to be like,
- 8:15I've been so hurt by these people that to me, what seems
- 8:22like justice would just be like, bow and arrow and shoot
- 8:26someone's tongue out while the arrow is on fire.
- 8:31And when you have like just so much anger against someone,
- 8:39there are times where perhaps that anger is warranted.
- 8:43You can think even of our God, that Scripture says he is angry
- 8:47with the wicked every day. So God is angry every day.
- 8:52And so we shouldn't expect that we never encounter the emotion
- 8:57of anger. Now we got to do what's right
- 8:59with our anger here. As he says, I am putting it
- 9:02towards God, like God's, the one that is going to deal with this
- 9:06God, I need you to rescue me from it.
- 9:08He's not saying I'm going to attack these people.
- 9:11He's saying, God, It would be, in my estimation, just and good
- 9:16for them to have a burning tongue.
- 9:20You know, you can think that there's a colloquialism in
- 9:22English that you can say, oh, my ears are burning.
- 9:26And it means someone else is is talking about me.
- 9:30And here it's almost like, OK, let them have a literal burning
- 9:34tongue because they they have been using their tongue to talk
- 9:39falsely about me. Can I ask you what, what do you
- 9:43think about that? What do you think of this
- 9:46thought of God? I want you to send a warriors
- 9:50sharp arrows with burning charcoal at these false and
- 9:54deceitful tongues. I think there should also be
- 9:59kind of an introspection for us because we can put ourselves in
- 10:02the slot of the person that is being lied about.
- 10:06And certainly that might be true at times in our lives, but we
- 10:09have also been the ones that have sinned against others in
- 10:13our speech. We have assigned motives that
- 10:15they didn't truly have. We thought that they did
- 10:18something for a reason that they didn't really do it for.
- 10:22And so we can choose to or we we ought to choose to say, God,
- 10:27would you help me that I would only say the things that you
- 10:30want me to say. Help me to not spread lies.
- 10:33Help me to not spread gossip. Help me to not speak falsehoods.
- 10:36Let me say only what is true and what you would have me to.
- 10:42And God, may you help my tongue to be a well of life for others.
- 10:48That when people talk with Brian, they go, man, I'm
- 10:50encouraged. Yeah, I I learned, you know, I
- 10:54learned something about God or man.
- 10:57He really seems like he cares about me and and loves me.
- 11:01He was happy to talk with me. He spent his time talking about
- 11:06things he was excited for or things that he's praying over.
- 11:11He didn't just spend all his time talking trash about other
- 11:13people. I want that to be the way that I
- 11:17live my life. I want my words to be a
- 11:21wellspring of life. I don't want them to be like
- 11:24this that need a warrior's sharp arrows with burning charcoal to
- 11:30to take out my tongue. And then here at the end of this
- 11:33Psalm, he says what misery that I've stayed in Meshech.
- 11:38So this was located southeast of the Black Sea.
- 11:43And then that he says that I have lived among the tents of
- 11:46Kedar. Kadar was an eastern plain
- 11:49located at the northern fringe of the Syrian Arabian Desert.
- 11:54It was normally inhabited by Arab tribes Together Meshach and
- 11:59Kadar. This represented places far and
- 12:02near where Israelites dwelt as aliens.
- 12:06So it's there are these places way far away, like kind of by
- 12:11Russia, north of Turkey, if I remember correctly, as kind of
- 12:15where the Black Sea is. It's in that area of the world.
- 12:20So yeah, Meshech, they are way far away.
- 12:22And then Kedar, which is a little bit closer, but that's
- 12:26near Israel. And so you'd have Israelites
- 12:29that were there that as they're coming to worship the Lord from
- 12:33these places that are just godless and evil, they go, man,
- 12:38I really don't enjoy living in these places.
- 12:42And so they say, what misery that I've stayed there, that
- 12:44I've lived among the Kents of Kedar.
- 12:45I've dwelt too long with those who hate peace.
- 12:49I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war here.
- 12:56I think even in our weekly worship, this is something that
- 13:01we can think about that we oh God, I have been in my workplace
- 13:06and I have been for peace, I've been for godliness, I've been
- 13:09for righteousness. I have advocated for life and
- 13:14for Jesus. I have advocated for love.
- 13:17And these other people, they are totally against that.
- 13:20They have a totally different worldview.
- 13:22And so I think here as the Israelites, 3 * a year, they
- 13:27made their pilgrimages that we weekly get to make this
- 13:32pilgrimage and we can say, God, what misery that I have been in
- 13:36this workplace or this neighborhood or even sometimes,
- 13:39you know, if if not all of your home is made-up of Christians.
- 13:42I have been in this home with this family for too long.
- 13:46I am so thankful now to be heading to the place of worship,
- 13:49to the place where God is exalted and where his way is the
- 13:53best way that's being pursued. I think we ought to have a love
- 13:59and a desire to gather with God's people.
- 14:04Some people kind of buck against that, especially nowadays.
- 14:08I can think several times over the past two months or so where
- 14:12I've had people online, you know, just random Internet
- 14:17atheist that have been like, oh, or, or purported Christians
- 14:22even. They go like, oh, I don't need
- 14:24to go to church to worship God. Well, the truth is we do need to
- 14:31because God commands us to. It's not that we need to go
- 14:35because anyone needs to hear from Brian.
- 14:38And it's not that we need to go because it's got, you know, some
- 14:41great band. And we don't just go because all
- 14:44of our best friends are going to be there.
- 14:46That's not why we gather together.
- 14:49We gather to worship the Lord. We gather to hear from the word.
- 14:53We gather to praise. We gather to give of our best to
- 15:00the Lord in in every way. And so we really do need to
- 15:05gather together. And I think here in verses 5
- 15:08through 7, this is a little microcosm of what we often
- 15:11encounter in the world around us, that it's kind of a
- 15:14miserable place. But when we go to worship our
- 15:17God, that is the best time. That is a great time.
- 15:21And so let's pursue that. And then I just want to mention
- 15:24too, with verses 6:00 and 7:00, it says I've dwelt too long with
- 15:29those who hate peace. And then verse seven, I am for
- 15:32peace, but when I speak, they are for war.
- 15:37The people of God are always to be people that are encouraging
- 15:42for peace. Now there can be times where
- 15:45peace is not good. I think of the stories even of
- 15:48World War 2 of further and further property, properties
- 15:51that were given to Germany during that time period.
- 15:56And they thought, OK, if I if we just give them a little bit more
- 15:59land or we just give them this country, then they'll stop.
- 16:03That was a time when there needed to be war.
- 16:09Even with our Nation Today, I've seen some things that say, OK,
- 16:15well, now Greenland's going to be the next place that that we
- 16:19go into. My encouragement for you as a
- 16:22pastor, I'm not a political whatever.
- 16:25So don't be like, oh, listen, you just don't understand the
- 16:29days and times in which we live. We really need Greenland,
- 16:33especially if it comes to any sort of violence, war, etcetera.
- 16:38That shouldn't be something that has the people of God.
- 16:39We're like, yes, we love war. War is done by the nations of
- 16:44this world, godless, controlled by Satan.
- 16:47Read the book of Daniel. You'll see that over and over
- 16:49and over again. The nations of this world are
- 16:54godless and they love war because it gets them stuff.
- 16:58They think that their security comes through violence.
- 17:01They think that they can subjugate others and be in
- 17:05control of others and that they can exploit resources.
- 17:09And that's not a godly thing. That's not a godly way of
- 17:12living. It is the regular way of the
- 17:14world and you can gain financial prosperity or a different things
- 17:20from war and conquest, but you're not doing all of the
- 17:24things that that God would have for you to do.
- 17:28I'd say, Brian, you know, are you just, you know, against this
- 17:31or that or the other? No, that goes fully across the
- 17:35board. This is what Scripture has said
- 17:373000 years ago or this one probably 2500 or so years ago.
- 17:44This is just what Scripture says.
- 17:46And so I want to always temper any patriotic thoughts with, OK,
- 17:53and what does God's word say? So I can be grateful for some
- 17:57good things in the news recently, there's a Venezuelan
- 18:01dictator that that was removed. And I can be thankful for those
- 18:06good things that do happen while also cautioning, let's make sure
- 18:10that we're never like pursuing violence and war.
- 18:15May we only ever utilize that when it is necessary to protect
- 18:20the innocent, to care for those that would be downtrodden.
- 18:25And so this is not a political podcast.
- 18:28I don't have anything more to say on that.
- 18:30Just follow the word left word, Do that and be for peace.
- 18:35Jesus is the Prince of Peace and one day he will come and make a
- 18:38war that will be won and done. There will be no more war after
- 18:43that and after that and I am looking forward to that day.
- 18:46Thanks for tuning then. Thank you for your patience and
- 18:49looking forward to some 121 tomorrow.
