Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 0:22Oh my God, it is 42° today in Sydney.
- 0:26It is like so humid and sticky and we are truly in Australian
- 0:31summer. OK so before I get into the
- 0:34stories, I did want to say a huge thank you guys for how
- 0:38supportive you were of our Brita campaign last week, our Brita
- 0:42sponsorship. So this will be a year long
- 0:44campaign. I mentioned this yesterday
- 0:46yesterday, I mentioned this on Friday, but this will be a year
- 0:49long campaign. They are the first brand that
- 0:51ever signed a year long deal with us and a year long
- 0:54partnership, and this is just a huge milestone for us.
- 0:58So I actually talked about this milestone on my TikTok and on my
- 1:01Instagram reels as part of this campaign.
- 1:03Today. The videos just went up, so go
- 1:05check those out. But you know, honestly, being a
- 1:08startup is constantly worrying about cash flow and feeling like
- 1:12you are just chasing your tail, trying to make everything work
- 1:16and make sure that you don't run out of money or don't have to
- 1:19make giant financial decisions like laying people off or
- 1:22anything like that. And thankfully, knock on wood,
- 1:25we have not had to do anything like that so far.
- 1:28But you know that difference between like considering your
- 1:31business as a startup versus being in the growth phase is
- 1:34knowing where your next invoice is coming from and having that
- 1:38steady cash flow. That is like a giant marker of
- 1:42the difference between being like a quote UN quote startup
- 1:44and being a business that is a bit more mature.
- 1:47And we've been stuck in that startup phase for several years
- 1:50now. And this Britta campaign really
- 1:52is like the first major step for us of getting out of that and
- 1:56knowing we have a bit more security this year.
- 1:59So it meant a lot that you guys were so supportive of Britta in
- 2:02the comments on YouTube and on Spotify because honestly, they
- 2:06are helping us keep the lights on in a huge, huge way this
- 2:09year. OK, let's get into the stories.
- 2:11So the first story that I have for you guys is that Gracie
- 2:15Abrams has reacted to the online petition to replace her opening
- 2:20act Okay, so Gracie Abrams has clapped back at fans who are
- 2:24petitioning to have her opening act, Dora Jar, removed from her
- 2:27tour. This is so mean, okay?
- 2:30Dora Jar will be opening for Gracie on the European leg of
- 2:33her tour in February and March. The petition is now deleted, but
- 2:36it was posted on Change.org and this is what it said.
- 2:39Many fans, including myself, are baffled by the recent
- 2:42announcement that Dora Jar will be the opening act for the
- 2:45Secret of Us Tours Europe shows. We are perplexed as we do not
- 2:49recognize her and with less than two weeks till the tour, it's
- 2:52virtually impossible to familiarize ourselves with her.
- 2:55Slow paced songs for a memorable concert experience and opening
- 2:59act should set the mood and get the crowd excited.
- 3:02But Dora slow tempo songs may not achieve this goal.
- 3:05It's not just a personal concern.
- 3:07According to Billboard, upbeat opening acts are essential to
- 3:10the overall concert experience as they set the tone for the
- 3:13headlining act and help in keeping the audience's energy up
- 3:16throughout the show. Billboard 2019 and brackets like
- 3:19citing it. OK, I don't know how many
- 3:21signatures this petition got, but it obviously got picked up
- 3:26by some news outlets. Fans were tweeting about it,
- 3:28posting about it and Dora I'm assuming was tagged in it.
- 3:32So somebody had linked the petition and tagged her on
- 3:36Twitter and she wrote don't worry, this doesn't bum me out.
- 3:39I'm here to perform for all the music loving, open hearted fans.
- 3:42Those who aren't interested can go by merch while I'm playing
- 3:45and they might as well let me entertain them, though an
- 3:48overwhelming amount of fans have been so kind and excited.
- 3:51That's a really classy response from her.
- 3:53I imagine despite what she says, it would be very difficult to
- 3:58deal with a petition going around on the Internet of people
- 4:01saying that they think that your music is not good enough to open
- 4:06for Gracie Abrams. Like one of, I assume one of
- 4:09their favorite artists if they're so passionate about
- 4:10this. I think a lot of this comes down
- 4:13to the parasocial relationship and like the fan entitlement,
- 4:16which we have talked about so many times.
- 4:18We have talked about fan entitlement in especially the
- 4:21music space. I don't know, I'm, I'm not like
- 4:24immersed in music enough, I guess to have a very strong
- 4:31grasp on this. But I'm going to say it is
- 4:35possible that over the last few years, because of TikTok,
- 4:39because of the rise of TikTok and how TikTok has transformed
- 4:42the music industry, a lot of us are not going to concerts for,
- 4:45like, big names like Gracie Abrams is at this point, a very
- 4:49well known artist, at least amongst, like, Gen.
- 4:52Z women and, you know, in her genre.
- 4:54So people are not really going to concerts anymore for an
- 4:57artist of that caliber. And they maybe are not familiar
- 5:01with the opening act. And I think a lot of that comes
- 5:03down to social media and TikTok and the expectation that artists
- 5:09must be constantly going viral on TikTok to solidify their
- 5:13music career. And so going to concerts for a
- 5:16big a list name, I know a lot of people might not like that I
- 5:19called Gracie Abrams a list, but you know what I mean?
- 5:21Like a big name like her, maybe there is this new expectation
- 5:25that you kind of are getting almost like a 2IN1 concert.
- 5:29I don't know. But when I was in like my late
- 5:31teens, early 20s, mid 20s, going to concerts, like I never knew
- 5:35the opening act. That's kind of the point of an
- 5:37opening act is you are helping platform their career, right?
- 5:41You're helping kind of give them this like Launchpad for their
- 5:44career. I think it's normal to not know
- 5:47the opening act and maybe like not even really care for them.
- 5:49I don't know what you can also just like go to the concert when
- 5:53the artist that you have paid to see starts.
- 5:56This just gives like a bullying. OK, So Gracie responded.
- 6:01She commented on, I believe this is on Instagram Reels, she
- 6:06wrote. Just hearing about this absolute
- 6:08ridiculousness, so wildly uncool and bizarre and also just does
- 6:12not remotely add up. I've only seen everyone's total
- 6:15excitement and I couldn't be luckier or prouder to share a
- 6:18stage with this talent and wonder stream everything she's
- 6:21ever made, whether or not you're coming to the show, Dora forever
- 6:24and ever. So I think it's great that
- 6:26Gracie spoke up. I think it's necessary, you
- 6:28know, having to reel her fans in a little bit, unfortunately, I
- 6:32think is what needed to happen here.
- 6:34But I don't think we should be able to just make like change
- 6:36org petitions for anything. I feel like there needs to be
- 6:40like a questionnaire. There needs to be somewhat
- 6:43qualifiers for you to make a viral petition like this.
- 6:48OK, the next story that I have for you guys is there are
- 6:50rumors, a lot of them big rumors that Jason Nash will be
- 6:56replacing Dave Portnoy on the BFFS podcast.
- 7:00In November 2024, Dave announced he would be leaving BFFS prior
- 7:04to the podcast returning for 2025.
- 7:07Josh and Bree who were the other Co hosts have posted a couple of
- 7:10episodes without Dave and I think that those episodes have
- 7:13been well received. I don't think they need a third
- 7:15person. But that hasn't stopped rumors
- 7:18that Jason will be joining Bri. And Josh talked about him on an
- 7:22episode, like kind of teasing maybe that he would be someone
- 7:26that could join the pod. And I think that's where these
- 7:29rumors stemmed from. But now fans are even more
- 7:32convinced after Jason posted a photo of himself over the
- 7:35weekend on Snapchat wearing a shirt that says Team Bri with a
- 7:40collage of BFFS photos tacked to a wall behind him.
- 7:44At first, I was like, is this in their studio?
- 7:46Like why? What's up with this wall?
- 7:48This is really weird. However, then he also posted a
- 7:51TikTok where he revealed that the wall collage is in his
- 7:54kitchen. So either this is like, I mean,
- 7:57obviously this is a troll. He obviously does not have like
- 7:59a shrine to BFFS in his kitchen. But you know, either this whole
- 8:03thing is a troll and like he's buying into it.
- 8:07They're all kind of feeding into it because it's getting them a
- 8:10little bit of traction or it is them actually drip feeding and
- 8:14teasing us that Jason will be on the show.
- 8:18Josh commented on that TikTok saying it would be an honor.
- 8:22I don't think it would be for Josh and Bree.
- 8:24I think it would be an honor for Jason.
- 8:28I think Jason is trying to maintain relevancy with every
- 8:32ounce of his being and constantly piggybacking on the
- 8:37careers of people who are like significantly younger than him.
- 8:41And I know that's really mean, but, like, Jason Nash is up
- 8:45there on my list, you know? But, yeah, I don't think that
- 8:49BFFS needs him. And I hope they don't go down
- 8:51this route, but it's seeming like they will.
- 8:54OK And the last story that I have for you guys is that
- 8:57Victoria Paris has been accused of copying a video from a
- 9:00smaller creator. And when I say accused, I feel
- 9:03like I actually need to reword that and say, like, it is so
- 9:06incredibly obvious that this was copied, but just hang on.
- 9:09So Victoria Paris is being called out for copying a small
- 9:12creator's content and it is literally almost identical.
- 9:17So the original video was by a creator with the handle Your
- 9:20under score Mom 69420 iconic. A month ago she posted this and
- 9:25her video was to the song All I Need by Radiohead.
- 9:28The video is just her like blinking into the screen.
- 9:31It's like a selfie of her blinking into her screen into
- 9:34the camera. With the text.
- 9:35You can always tell when a man's jewelry is performative and not
- 9:38a true representation of his spirit.
- 9:40This creator currently has 1600 followers, likely less when she
- 9:46Osted this video, right? Because this was a month ago and
- 9:48that video now is starting to get a lot of traction because of
- 9:51the Victoria Paris of it all. So I'm going to say she probably
- 9:54had, I'm going to say maybe like a less than 1500 followers at
- 9:58the time. Victoria Paris, who was a
- 10:00creator with nearly 2,000,000 followers posted a video this
- 10:05weekend and it's basically the exact same.
- 10:07So Victoria stares at the camera in the same way, blinking at the
- 10:10camera and she wrote you can always tell when a man's jewelry
- 10:13is performative and not representative of his true
- 10:16spirit. So the only real thing that
- 10:19changed is in the original video it says not a true
- 10:23representation of his spirit whereas Victoria wrote not
- 10:26representative of his true spirit.
- 10:29Victoria's video, this particular video has over 8.7
- 10:33million views and 1.2 million likes at this time.
- 10:37This would be so disheartening if you were the original
- 10:39creator. So people started tagging her
- 10:42who had seen her video I guess. And her video at this point only
- 10:46has 50,000 views and I imagine before this Victoria Paris
- 10:49situation it had way less than that.
- 10:51But yes her original video has around 50,000 views.
- 10:54If anybody has any questions about this.
- 10:56I wanted to get this out of the way.
- 10:57It is not a trend. OK.
- 11:00This creator did not start a trend.
- 11:02Victoria Paris is not jumping on a trend that she saw.
- 11:06The difference between this, which is like in my opinion
- 11:09straight up copying and a trend. What would make this a trend is
- 11:13if Victoria Paris instead of saying you can always tell when
- 11:15a man's jewelry is performative and blah, blah, blah, not
- 11:19representative of his true spirit.
- 11:21If she wrote something like you can always tell when a man's
- 11:23something else is performative and not representative of his
- 11:27true spirit. Like a man's social media posts
- 11:30or feed or, I don't know, like his personal style, like
- 11:32whatever you want to say. You could put something else in
- 11:34there and that would make it a trend.
- 11:36And she could use the same trending sound and she could tag
- 11:38the creator. Another way that this could have
- 11:40become a trend is if the original creator was showing the
- 11:43jewelry of Herman, right? So she's saying like you can
- 11:47always tell when a man's jewelry is performative, whatever, and
- 11:49then she shows her man's jewelry.
- 11:52OK. And then Victoria Paris decided
- 11:54to use, use the same text, use the same sound, the template and
- 11:58then showed her partner's jewelry, right?
- 12:01And then everybody would start making their own version of
- 12:04this. That is what a trend is.
- 12:05It's not like a copy and paste. So this is not a trend.
- 12:09She just straight up copied this.
- 12:11I'm going to assume allegedly from this creator, because I do
- 12:15not know how you could have the exact same thought for the text,
- 12:19the style of video and the sound, all those three things
- 12:23together. It is almost the exact same.
- 12:26It is so wild. But yeah, a lot of people I
- 12:28don't think have seen the original creators video.
- 12:31Some bigger creators are reposting it to amplify it and
- 12:34obviously posting about it in Victoria's comment section.
- 12:37Unfortunately, this is a story that we see a lot where big
- 12:40creators just kind of see things from smaller creators and take
- 12:44those ideas and run with it. Even if there's no, like, legal
- 12:47ramifications for this. It's incredibly unethical,
- 12:50uncreative, and I feel really, really bad for this creator in
- 12:56particular. Victoria Pierce's video was like
- 12:58legit viral like I think it would be different.
- 13:01I mean it wouldn't be that different, but it would be maybe
- 13:03a little bit different if Victoria's video didn't have so
- 13:05many views, but the fact that it has almost 9 million views, she
- 13:10must just be like what the fuck? That was literally my idea.
- 13:14Anyways, guys that's it for today.
