  SPEAKER_02: Hello, friend.
• 0:02
  SPEAKER_02: Chaplain Terry Warner here.
• 0:04
SPEAKER_02: Today I have a special guest that I'm really excited for you to meet.
• 0:08
SPEAKER_02: His name is Dan Parr.
• 0:10
SPEAKER_02: He's a passionate follower of Jesus Christ and a gifted Bible narrator.
• 0:14
SPEAKER_02: He has a deep love for God's Word and a desire to make it accessible and understandable for everyone.
• 0:22
SPEAKER_02: He is the publisher and narrator of the Easy to Understand Read Bible, the E-U-R.
• 0:29
SPEAKER_02: His voice is clear, warm, and he has an engaging delivery.
• 0:34
SPEAKER_02: Enough about me and my special guest, Dan.
• 0:39
  SPEAKER_00: The show's yours.
• 0:41
SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you so much, Chaplain Terry.
• 0:43
  SPEAKER_00: It's a pleasure to be here.
• 0:44
SPEAKER_00: I'm happy you reached out, and uh, it's just an honor to be able to spend some time with you this afternoon.
• 0:49
  SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
• 0:52
SPEAKER_02: So, where do you want to start?
• 0:54
SPEAKER_02: You want to start with uh your mom and the choices she made?
• 0:58
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's probably a good place.
• 1:00
SPEAKER_00: It kind of sets the foundation for everything that I've done, I feel.
• 1:04
SPEAKER_00: Um, so let me go way back.
• 1:06
SPEAKER_00: Uh, when I mean way back, I mean before I was born.
• 1:11
SPEAKER_00: Um, when my mom was pregnant with me, she was going through a very challenging season of life.
• 1:18
SPEAKER_00: She had been suffering from migraine headaches, and the only relief she found was being on these strong medications that her doctor prescribed to her.
• 1:28
SPEAKER_00: Now, while she had been taking these, uh, turns out she became pregnant, and she was very concerned about what all these drugs she had going through her would do to her baby.
• 1:38
SPEAKER_00: So she went to her doctor and was hoping to get a little bit of comfort, but he basically just reassured her that, yeah, this was trouble.
• 1:47
SPEAKER_00: Um, he said that the medications that she's on comes with a whole host of side effects, uh, including birth defects, um, mental retardation, um, could be anything.
• 2:00
SPEAKER_00: But he knew that something was going to be not normal with um the baby.
• 2:07
SPEAKER_00: So what he advised is that she get an abortion.
• 2:10
SPEAKER_00: Um, he knew that it was going to be a very big challenge and strain on my family to care for a special needs child, and he just recommended that course of action.
• 2:21
SPEAKER_00: Well, of course, she was, you know, distraught when she heard that.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_00: And uh she went home and talked to my dad.
• 2:27
SPEAKER_00: And they just started to seek the Lord, Pastor Terry.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_00: And uh they uh came to a place in prayer where they thought, well, if God allowed her to become pregnant, there must be a reason for it.
• 2:40
  SPEAKER_00: He doesn't make mistakes.
• 2:41
SPEAKER_00: So even if this child is going to be born special needs, we're gonna honor God, honor life, and let this child come and make his way in the world.
• 2:51
SPEAKER_00: So with that, they uh put it out there and decided to bring me to term.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_00: And when I was born, they looked me over, had all my fingers, had all my toes, they watched over the next several months, and I developed perfectly normal.
• 3:05
  SPEAKER_00: It was as expected.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_00: So that was many, many decades ago.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_00: But uh, I've been in good health ever since.
• 3:12
SPEAKER_00: And, you know, just that decision that they made really had an impact on me.
• 3:18
SPEAKER_00: It it made me realize if God allowed me to be born without any kind of issue or problems or special needs, then he must have a reason and a purpose for it.
• 3:29
SPEAKER_00: So that, you know, put it in my heart very early that I'm here for a reason.
• 3:34
SPEAKER_00: Now, as I've gotten older, I've come to realize that everybody has a reason and a purpose.
• 3:40
  SPEAKER_00: It's not just me.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but for me, that really just cemented the the thought in my head that, okay, I have something that I'm here to do, obviously.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_00: And it would take many, many years and uh a lot of uh being away from the Lord for a period of time.
• 3:57
SPEAKER_00: But eventually I I found what I believe to be my calling in uh his place of service.
• 4:04
  SPEAKER_02: Yes.
• 4:05
SPEAKER_02: Um excuse me, the the divine the abortion really gets to me.
• 4:15
SPEAKER_02: We adopted four children, and the reason we did was of two miscarriages and a stillborn one week prior to delivery.
• 4:25
SPEAKER_02: That's so we decided to adopt.
• 4:27
SPEAKER_02: We had wanted to be missionaries, but we didn't want to go over leave town, so to speak.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_02: So we decided to adopt.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_02: So when you bring abortion in and miscarriages and a design purpose, it really gets to me and it just emotionally gets gets to me.
• 4:44
  SPEAKER_00: Uh I yeah, I understand.
• 4:46
SPEAKER_00: Life is precious, and you know, it's just by God's grace that I'm here.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_00: Really, it's by God's grace that any of us are here.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_00: And just, you know, just to have that burden to have a child and then go through complications or issues, you know, like you you and your wife did.
• 5:01
SPEAKER_00: It's just it's just heartbreaking to think of, you know, all the children that are wanted that couples can have that have been aborted over the years.
• 5:10
SPEAKER_00: So I completely understand where you're coming from with that.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_02: I even get into uh liking it to the uh sacrifice of Moloch.
• 5:20
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 5:21
SPEAKER_02: You know, I get into that stuff into that now.
• 5:24
SPEAKER_02: Well, what was your key to understanding the translation or doing this translation?
• 5:32
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was uh it was a unique journey to say the least.
• 5:36
SPEAKER_00: When I uh I started this, I had no desire to become a Bible publisher or narrator.
• 5:43
  SPEAKER_00: It started innocently enough.
• 5:45
SPEAKER_00: I'm a uh voiceover talent by trade.
• 5:47
SPEAKER_00: I read scripts for people.
• 5:50
SPEAKER_00: And um I would read scripture in church in our Sunday school class or small group.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_00: And one day the um teacher said, You know, Dan, I always hope you're going to volunteer when I ask for somebody to read the scripture.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_00: I love the way God's voice or God's word sounds with your voice.
• 6:08
SPEAKER_00: And I thought, well, that was very nice.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_00: So I got this idea that I was going to make a little Facebook video about the resurrection of Christ for Easter and put it up on my Facebook for friends and family.
• 6:20
SPEAKER_00: So I went to the book of Luke, found the resurrection story, and I thought, well, I could probably make this flow a little bit better, easier to read and understand.
• 6:29
SPEAKER_00: So uh I kind of rewrote it without changing the meaning or intent of the author and put that together and made a little Facebook video and got some good feedback on it.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_00: So it wasn't too long after that that I began to think, well, what if I just did the entire book of Luke?
• 6:47
SPEAKER_00: That would be pretty ambitious to do the entire book of the Bible.
• 6:51
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 6:52
SPEAKER_00: So I thought if I'm gonna do that, I might as well try to sell it as well, right?
• 6:56
SPEAKER_00: I've got some stuff on Audible and Amazon, so I might as well put that up there.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_00: So I was going to record the book of Luke.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_00: However, I found you can't just pick up the Bible and record it if you want to sell it, because it's got copy marks and trade uh copyright protection on it, right?
• 7:13
  SPEAKER_00: Trademarks.
• 7:14
SPEAKER_00: So I had to find something, a translation that was available in the public domain.
• 7:20
SPEAKER_00: So I came across the King James Version and I started reading it a little bit and got to all the these and the thou's and the beseecheths and the saiths.
• 7:30
SPEAKER_00: And I thought, well, this sounds very beautiful, but this is going to be a very challenging task for me to read.
• 7:36
  SPEAKER_00: So I can't use this.
• 7:38
SPEAKER_00: Uh, I had to find another version.
• 7:40
SPEAKER_00: I came across the World English Bible, and it was much more modern, uh, but even it had a lot of um, I would say, awkward phrasing or sentences or kind of some archaic terms and language, uh, things that we don't really say anymore in the 2020s.
• 7:56
SPEAKER_00: So I thought, okay, well, I can start with this.
• 7:58
SPEAKER_00: It's a good, reliable base, and I'll take this and I'm just gonna go through the book of Luke, sentence by sentence by sentence, chapter by chapter, and uh rewrite it to make it understandable and easier to uh to read.
• 8:13
SPEAKER_00: So I did that, and then I recorded the book of Luke and put it out there.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_00: And when it was done, I thought, okay, that was a lot of work, and I enjoyed the process.
• 8:24
SPEAKER_00: However, I don't know if anybody is ever going to listen to this, so I'm done.
• 8:29
  SPEAKER_00: And that was it.
• 8:30
SPEAKER_00: I was I was planning on hanging it up right there.
• 8:33
SPEAKER_00: But as you know, God is um a little persistent, and it wasn't too long after I did the book of Luke that he started to speak to my heart and say, you know, the book of Acts is really the book of Luke part two.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_00: Don't you think people need to know the rest of the story?
• 8:53
SPEAKER_00: And of course I resisted a little bit, but I felt uh the nudge there, the urging there.
• 8:58
SPEAKER_00: And eventually I gave into it.
• 8:59
SPEAKER_00: And I did the book of Acts and I thought, okay, well, I'm glad that's done.
• 9:03
SPEAKER_00: I told the rest of the story, and it wasn't too long before I thought Romans has a lot of good stuff in there.
• 9:09
SPEAKER_00: People probably need to hear the book of Romans.
• 9:12
SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, okay, I'll do the book of Romans, and as you can imagine, the um the urging of the spirit continued, and I finished doing the entire New Testament, and it wasn't before long, before it well, I thought, well, there's a lot of great stories in the Old Testament that have value as well.
• 9:32
SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's funny, uh, Chaplain Terry, because I was arguing with God during this process.
• 9:40
SPEAKER_00: I was telling him, we don't need another translation of the Bible.
• 9:44
SPEAKER_00: We have plenty of them out there.
• 9:46
SPEAKER_00: We don't need one more.
• 9:47
SPEAKER_00: And I would say this frequently as I was working on it.
• 9:52
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but eventually, I guess God found it more amusing than persuasive because I seemed to sense him saying, Dan, why don't you let me decide what we need and what we don't?
• 10:04
SPEAKER_00: And I thought, okay, I guess that's what I needed to hear.
• 10:07
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_00: So uh with that, I I completed the Old Testament uh and New Testament, and four years later, uh, had a complete version, all 66 books of the Bible.
• 10:19
  SPEAKER_02: Goodness.
• 10:19
SPEAKER_02: So it took a little bit of effort.
• 10:21
SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's quite an accomplishment.
• 10:24
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, thank you.
• 10:25
SPEAKER_02: On a side note, I uh teach a Bible study in the prison every Sunday.
• 10:30
SPEAKER_02: Great to incarcerated veterans, and the younger ones do not understand King James, it's like talking Greek to them.
• 10:41
SPEAKER_02: Uh they can't read it, they can't write it, and they don't understand it.
• 10:45
SPEAKER_02: I grew up with it, so I don't think anything about it.
• 10:48
SPEAKER_02: Uh as a matter of fact, when I was a kid, we would talk King James, but not so much anymore.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_02: But yes, they it's it's a different generation and a different day.
• 11:02
SPEAKER_02: And the people need to realize uh I witnessed to a particular denomination that that doesn't believe anything like I do, but I use his Bible, and I'm wanting to Christ using his Bible.
• 11:16
  SPEAKER_02: Wow.
• 11:16
SPEAKER_02: And and I I don't know that I'm allowed to say what denomination it was or anything else, but so I won't.
• 11:22
SPEAKER_02: But i if it hadn't been you know, that's how I witnessed to him was through his own denomination's Bible.
• 11:30
SPEAKER_02: And it had a lot of errors in it.
• 11:32
SPEAKER_02: But once he saw that, then he got into the word and got into the real word.
• 11:36
SPEAKER_02: And by that I mean the Greek and Hebrew.
• 11:39
SPEAKER_02: I looked for the root words and causes and stuff.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_02: So yes, uh that's that's quite an undertaking.
• 11:47
SPEAKER_02: Now, how do you how do you ensure that it's gonna stay vital and stay you you know we can only control so much?
• 11:59
  SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
• 12:00
  SPEAKER_00: You're absolutely right.
• 12:01
SPEAKER_00: And what I had to come to grips with is I'm not a Bible teacher, I'm not a theologian, I haven't graduated from seminary, so I thought, God, why use me?
• 12:13
SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, sure I can speak, but uh, why use me?
• 12:19
SPEAKER_00: And you know, again, God often calls those who are available and he equips them to do his service.
• 12:26
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I got the impression that when I was doing this, that the Lord was saying to me, you know, when I started to spread the message of the gospel, I didn't go to the religious elite, I went to fishermen, I went to a tax collector and some other guys, just common everyday men, and turned out pretty good for me spreading the message that way.
• 12:44
SPEAKER_00: So if I can use them, I could probably use you too, Dan.
• 12:47
SPEAKER_00: So I thought, okay, I guess I'm I guess I'm all right then in doing this.
• 12:51
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we wouldn't have picked anybody, maybe Paul, but we wouldn't have picked any of the others.
• 12:57
  SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
• 12:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it they uh were unlearned men.
• 13:02
SPEAKER_00: But again, I think God does that on purpose so he can get the glory, right?
• 13:06
SPEAKER_00: People will see these are ordinary, unschooled men, yet the power of God is working through them.
• 13:12
SPEAKER_00: And I could only hope that that's what happens with this translation of the Bible, that people see God in it and hear God through it.
• 13:20
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but you know, I I just had to come to a place where I knew that God is sovereign and he is going to do whatever he wants to do.
• 13:29
SPEAKER_00: And I just have to put my faith and trust in him that I'm going to do my absolute very best and handle this with the um sacredness of that is the text and reverence that I need to have for it, and just making sure that I'm doing everything I can to make sure it is theologically accurate.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_00: And I did that by checking against several different versions of the Bible as what as I was doing this to make sure that what I wrote lines up with how scriptures have historically been uh interpreted, to make sure that I'm not going out in left field anywhere and make sure that everything lines up uh with the historical translation, uh, but just saying it in a way that is fresh and modern, so that if there's somebody who doesn't understand the Bible, doesn't know anything about Jesus, doesn't understand terms like sanctification, that they can pick this up, read it, and go, oh, you know what?
• 14:22
  SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
• 14:23
SPEAKER_00: It's written in the language that I speak today.
• 14:26
SPEAKER_00: So that's really my goal in producing this translation.
• 14:29
SPEAKER_02: So you started with Acts being your first.
• 14:34
SPEAKER_02: What made you start with Acts per se?
• 14:37
SPEAKER_00: Well, I started with Luke and uh I'm sorry, I meant Luke.
• 14:41
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it really was just um wanting to tell the resurrection story, and then I when I decided to do the whole book, it's like, well, I already did a little bit of Luke, so I'll just go ahead and start with that.
• 14:54
SPEAKER_00: Had I been doing it again, you know, I might have started with um Mark, uh something you know, kind of quick and simple, but you know, it just it didn't really matter where I started the whole thing was going to get done.
• 15:07
SPEAKER_00: It didn't really matter what order it was going to be in to me.
• 15:10
SPEAKER_00: Well uh Luke was is is detailed on a lot of things that the other books aren't in.
• 15:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean he he was a doctor, right?
• 15:21
SPEAKER_00: And he was a physician, so it uh it shows a little bit in that writing that he gives a different little bit different perspective and details that some of the other gospels don't.
• 15:31
SPEAKER_02: Well, I was called into the ministry, sitting in a church one Sunday morning, mainline denomination, and I had been uh right after that I enrolled in seminary.
• 15:42
SPEAKER_02: And and that's when the problems arose.
• 15:48
SPEAKER_02: Uh the uh the Lord healed me a bona fide medical approved healing, and the church just could not accept it, so they asked us to leave.
• 16:00
SPEAKER_02: And so I dropped out of seminary and I left, and I spent four years being taught by the Holy Spirit.
• 16:08
SPEAKER_02: When I came out of that, but the other thing I was doing, and you may be too young to remember this, but back in the 70s the charismatic movement was coming in, and there were a lot of churches splitting and stuff.
• 16:22
SPEAKER_02: The Lord assigned me to be a mediator to keep these churches from splitting.
• 16:29
SPEAKER_02: And I told him several times, you know, this is not this is not what I had in mind when you'd call me into the ministry.
• 16:35
SPEAKER_02: So I did that, I did counseling, and then the Lord led me into being taught by the Holy Spirit.
• 16:44
SPEAKER_02: So years later I did go ahead and finish up my Bible school and stuff like that, and my uh chaplain's credentials and all that stuff.
• 16:52
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it'd be years later.
• 16:54
SPEAKER_02: So I was literally taught by the Holy Spirit, and it was amazing because I'd would talk to people and they'd say, Well, you've been reading so and so, you've been reading this.
• 17:04
  SPEAKER_02: No, I don't know who you're talking about.
• 17:08
SPEAKER_02: So it was really quite interesting, and I've had fun being a Christian.
• 17:13
SPEAKER_02: So many people are sour faced and so so dead serious, you know.
• 17:18
SPEAKER_02: Uh Jesus and I go together and we have a ball.
• 17:21
  SPEAKER_02: I have fun.
• 17:23
SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm thoroughly I'm I'm Pentecostal and I I've never had the Lord tell me to back off, always had him tell me to push on, you know, and and not to quit that I getting out of order.
• 17:37
SPEAKER_02: Anyway, I didn't mean to steal your thunder there.
• 17:41
  SPEAKER_02: Any words of wisdom.
• 17:44
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would just say that if there's anybody listening that has felt intimidated by reading the Bible before, perhaps you didn't understand it, it seemed uh cold and distant.
• 17:55
SPEAKER_00: Give this version a try.
• 17:57
SPEAKER_00: You know, you can buy a single book, you can buy just the book of Luke or the book of Mark and just read it and see what you think, or listen to it and see what you think.
• 18:05
SPEAKER_00: Because I think um this is a translation that has a lower entry point for a lot of people.
• 18:13
SPEAKER_00: They're not going to be confused by it because it's in modern English.
• 18:16
SPEAKER_00: So if they speak uh English, read English, anybody's gonna be able to uh figure this out and and understand it.
• 18:23
SPEAKER_00: You know, I've had a couple of people say that they grew up with the King James Version or another version and really didn't get a lot out of it.
• 18:30
SPEAKER_00: They happened to come across this version and read it, and uh it's changed it for changed things for them.
• 18:36
SPEAKER_00: One young man said that he had been he had grown up in the church and um left, got into a lot of new age stuff, uh, happened to come across this uh work and read it, and now he's following Christ again.
• 18:50
SPEAKER_00: Um and that's obviously just God's working through me, right?
• 18:54
  SPEAKER_00: He's he's the artist.
• 18:56
SPEAKER_00: I'm just the paintbrush he chose to use for this work.
• 18:59
SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, I would just say give it a shot.
• 19:02
SPEAKER_00: You've nothing to lose and everything to gain uh by reading God's word.
• 19:07
SPEAKER_00: And I I'm one of those crazy people who believe that Hebrews 4 is actually true, that God's word is alive, it is active, it is sharper than a two-edged sword.
• 19:17
SPEAKER_00: And that when you read it, things begin to change in your life.
• 19:20
SPEAKER_00: Doesn't mean you know it's like a snap of the fingers and something happens, but I believe a seed gets planted, and as you water it and tend to it by prayer and continued reading and fellowship with other Christians, things begin to shift and change in your life, and God does a work, and often he's going to lead you to a much better place than what you ever thought or imagined.
• 19:38
SPEAKER_00: So give him a shot, give the word a shot, and just see what he does with it.
• 19:43
SPEAKER_02: Eyes not seen, nor ears heard what God has intended for those who love him.
• 19:49
SPEAKER_02: But it has been revealed to us by his spirit.
• 19:53
SPEAKER_02: So I I I listen to Audible quite a bit, and I think uh I I generally go through the Bible three to four times a year uh with my studying and writing and everything, plus my other reading.
• 20:07
  SPEAKER_02: I'm an avid reader, I read over 50 books a year.
• 20:10
SPEAKER_02: Wow, more like around a hundred.
• 20:13
SPEAKER_02: Anyway, I think I'll put this on Audible and start my day with uh going through this audible.
• 20:21
  SPEAKER_00: So fantastic.
• 20:24
SPEAKER_00: We've got Bible reading plans for that start uh new every month.
• 20:28
SPEAKER_00: So if you want to start one in October, you can do that.
• 20:30
SPEAKER_00: Want to start one in March, you can do that.
• 20:33
SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, it's uh it's a great way to start your day.
• 20:36
SPEAKER_00: I absolutely agree with you there.
• 20:37
SPEAKER_00: And I think it's something we need to be in on a daily basis.
• 20:41
SPEAKER_00: I need to hear from God daily, and uh one of the ways that you can hear from God is just by being in his word and just uh enjoying his presence through it.
• 20:51
SPEAKER_02: This is not theologically correct, but when I got interested in God, he got interested in me.
• 20:58
  SPEAKER_02: I understand the sentiment.
