- 0:13read printed material. Today we will be reading from various
- 0:17books on soccer. Your reader today is dying. The first
- 0:22book is called good Night Soccer. It was published by
- 0:25Capstone Young Readers, a Capstone imprint, and it has a
- 0:31copyright year of twenty eighteen. It was written by Michael Dahl.
- 0:38Beneath the pink clouds and the sunset of God, the
- 0:41stadium's packed. Every seat has been sold. The crowd is excited.
- 0:46We're all chanting and singing. We wave our bright scarves
- 0:50in the stadium's ringing. Our team wins the toss. Here's
- 0:55the kick from our foes. The ball leaves the circle.
- 0:58Now watch where it goes, dribbling and passing. Our forwards
- 1:03move fast. Then our strikers zoom in when the defense
- 1:07is passed. Soon a kick and a goal. We jump
- 1:12and we roar, but the other team rushes and captures.
- 1:15They score. Through the game, the ball flies, Watch it bounce,
- 1:19watch it bend. The clock keeps on ticking. Oh, how
- 1:23will it end? Then? A penalty kick somehow slips through
- 1:27a hole, hits the back of the net. It's a
- 1:30last second goal. Now over the scoreboard, we see stars
- 1:38in the sky. Too soon. The game's over. Too soon
- 1:42for goodbyes. Good Night captains, Your teams are the best.
- 1:46Good Night to you coaches. Now your players can rest.
- 1:51Good Night in fielders. Good night strikers and backs. Good
- 1:55Night goalkeepers. Now it's time to relax. Goodnight net. Good
- 2:02Night ball to the fans in their jerseys. Good Night
- 2:04to you all. Good night field where our team was
- 2:07the winner. Good Night, bright lights getting smaller, growing dimmer.
- 2:12Good Night to my heroes, my champion team. Good Night soccer,
- 2:18Hello dreams. Our next book is called Soccer. It was
- 2:25published by The Child's World with a copy right ear
- 2:30of twenty seventeen, and the author of our book is
- 2:33Kara L. Lowlin. Game time. Are you ready to score
- 2:40some ghosts? Grab some friends and lace up your shoes.
- 2:44Let's play soccer. Fast. Fact. In most parts of the world,
- 2:50soccer is called football gear. Soccer players need some gear
- 2:55to play. Cleats grip the ground. They keep you from slipping.
- 3:00Shin guards protect your legs. Soccer socks keep your guard
- 3:05in place. Fast fact. More than two hundred and fifty
- 3:09million people in the world play soccer players. Each team
- 3:14has eleven players. Every player has a job. Some players
- 3:18focus on goals, others guard the net. All the players
- 3:22work together starting the game. The kickoff starts the game.
- 3:29A player stands in the center of the field. She
- 3:32kicks the ball forward. Then anyone else can kick the ball.
- 3:37Fast fact. Soccer balls are made of leather and plastic.
- 3:42Moving the ball, the players dribble the ball with their feet.
- 3:45They also pass the ball to other players. Sometimes they
- 3:49stop the ball with their chest. The pros even head
- 3:53the ball fast fact. There are thirty two sections on
- 3:59a soccer ball. No hands allowed. Only the goalies can
- 4:03use their hands in soccer. They can grab the ball
- 4:06before it goes in the net. They can throw or
- 4:09kick it to their teammates fast fact. Goalies wear gloves
- 4:14that help them grip the grip the ball the field.
- 4:18The soccer field has lines painted in the grass. The
- 4:21player kicks the ball outside of the lines, it is out.
- 4:25The other team gets to throw or kick the ball
- 4:28by ken fast fact. A soccer field is also called
- 4:32a pitch. Free kicks If someone breaks the rules, The
- 4:37ref may blow a whistle to stop the game. It
- 4:40could mean a free kick. Some players can bend the
- 4:43ball on a free kick. They kick the ball so
- 4:46that it curves in the air. This makes it harder
- 4:48for the goalie to catch. Fast fact, you kick a
- 4:53soccer ball with the top of your foot, not your toe. Go.
- 4:59When a team's since the ball to the net, they
- 5:01score a point, Then the other team gets to kick off.
- 5:04Both teams keep trying to score until time is up.
- 5:08The end of the game, the team with the most
- 5:10goes when fast fact. The World Cup is the championship
- 5:15for teams all over the world. It is held every
- 5:19four years. Our next book is titled Mix Explains Everything
- 5:26Soccer Expert and it was published by G. P. Putnam's Sons,
- 5:31an imprint of Penguin Random House, and it has a
- 5:36copyright year of twenty nineteen. The author is Stacy Mica Nulty.
- 5:42I know a lot about soccer. I've been playing for
- 5:45a long time, almost three weeks. Practice is fun, the
- 5:49game days are the best. You wear special shoes called cleats,
- 5:55and a shirt with your lucky number. You know it's
- 5:58lucky because it's on your shirt. And bad old armor
- 6:02on your legs. I wish we got helmets and shields too.
- 6:06Mike's ready to get out there and kick the ball.
- 6:11Make sure you warm up before the game. Stretch, twirl
- 6:15summer salt in the huddle. Coach will tell you that
- 6:19winning is not important. Do your best to run fast,
- 6:23kick the ball, work as a team. Half sun. The
- 6:28game starts when the ref blows the whistle. He's the
- 6:31guy in yellow and he has a whistle. You should
- 6:33not bring your own whistle. Other stuff you should not
- 6:36bring to a soccer game crayons, a blanket, even if
- 6:40you just want to wear it as a cape, your
- 6:42sea show collection, or dust money collection, or any collection really.
- 6:47Sometimes there are dandelions and four leaf clovers on the field.
- 6:51I pull these out so no one gets distracted. Kick
- 6:55the ball mix. And sometimes there are ladybugs and worms.
- 7:00Should move these so they don't get hurt. I don't
- 7:03see any today. Give the ball mix. Thousands of fans
- 7:09come to the games, and they all take pictures. I
- 7:12like to give them different poses, maybe one smiling and
- 7:15a serious one, and one with my teammates. Let's take
- 7:21a picture of you kicking the ball. The clouds over
- 7:25the soccer field can be amazing. I've seen the alligator,
- 7:28a toothbrush, and a diamond ring. Nothing today. Coach wants
- 7:33everyone to play, so sometimes you will sit on the
- 7:36side and chair on your teammates. Here mix, eat an
- 7:41orange wedge. C see you can hear that bird chirping, Michael.
- 7:46Look at there's a butterfly hose. I like your new haircut.
- 7:51When you go back in the game, you must be
- 7:53ready for anything. Last week a dog ran out on
- 7:56the field. Come here, puppy. Can we keep him? Mom?
- 8:00Mix the ball In soccer, you can't use your hands
- 8:04to touch the ball. I've come up with other things
- 8:07to do with my hands so they don't get bored.
- 8:09I wave it fans, I hide them in my shirt.
- 8:13I play it'sy dizzy spider. I feel like I'm forgetting
- 8:17something important. Kick the ball, the ball. Mix something you
- 8:23have to do in soccer. Snack. That's it. I can't
- 8:27believe it. I almost forgot you. Get a snack at
- 8:30the end. Shake hands with the other team. First, good game,
- 8:34good game, a mix, Nice to meet you, good game,
- 8:39good game, Bye mix. That was fun. Coach can't wait
- 8:43to kick the ball again next week. Our next story
- 8:47is called K is for Kick, a soccer alphabet and
- 8:53it was published by Sleeping Bear Print Press, an imprint
- 8:58of the Gil Group Incorporate, a division of Thompson Learning Incorporated.
- 9:03Has a copyright air of two thousand and three and
- 9:06the author is Brad Herzog. A is where soccer is
- 9:13played all over the world in almost any country with
- 9:18a fat flag proudly in world, from Argentina to Australia,
- 9:22you'll find a soccer go even on the Arctic ice
- 9:26way up the North Poe. Millions of people of all
- 9:30ages and on every continent plays soccer. More than a
- 9:33billion people watch the Men's World Cup finals on television.
- 9:38The group that helps set and revise the rules of
- 9:40the game is the Federation International to Football Association, or FIFA.
- 9:49It was established in nineteen oh four. Soccer such a
- 9:52global passion that people will play anywhere. Nineteen ninety five,
- 9:56two teams from Russia played a game at the North
- 9:59po where the temperature was tiny twenty degrees below zero.
- 10:04B is for the ball, of course, without it, there's
- 10:07no game. The largest in the world is at the
- 10:10Soccer Hall of Fame, and B is for brave boys
- 10:14and girls who try with all their might to boot
- 10:18that bouncing soccer ball colored black and white. Aside from
- 10:23the massive sculpted ball that appears to be crashing through
- 10:26an exterior wall of the National Soccer Hall of Fame
- 10:30in New York. The facility also includes historical displays and
- 10:35a kids indoor field. The Hall of Fame has one
- 10:38of the world's largest collections of soccer artifacts, featuring more
- 10:42than eighty thousand items, but the heart of the hall
- 10:45is the room honoring the more than two hundred twenty inductees, players, coaches, trainers, officials,
- 10:53and administrators. The Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum
- 10:57is in Vaughan, Ontario. Rules call for the ball to
- 11:01be round and made of leather or other approved materials.
- 11:05It should weigh between fourteen and sixteen ounces and should
- 11:09measure between twenty seven and twenty eight inches around. Soccer
- 11:13in the US officially began in nineteen thirteen when the
- 11:16United States Football Association, now called the US Soccer Federation
- 11:21was formed. The following year saw the arrival of the
- 11:23first national tournament, the National Challenge Cup. In the US,
- 11:28the founding meeting of the dominion of Canadian football was
- 11:33held in Toronto on May four, twenty fourth, nineteen twelve,
- 11:37when soccer executives laid the foundation of what is today's
- 11:42Canadian Soccer Association. C is for clubs everywhere that give
- 11:48the fans their field, like Italy's AC Milan in Santos
- 11:52and Brazil. It's for the college soccer teams that play
- 11:56from coast to coast and countless school community leagues that
- 12:01many cities host. Most countries in Europe and Latin America
- 12:07have professional or semi professional soccer leagues. The winner of
- 12:10the top division in the country's national champion is the
- 12:15national champion. Many of these top teams compete against other
- 12:20countries top teams. Among the champions over the years are
- 12:23legendary clubs such as England's Manchester United, Spain's Real Madrid,
- 12:29and Italy's AC Milan. Soccer at the university level, like
- 12:33soccer elsewhere in North America, grew slowly until the nineteen sixties.
- 12:38Today there are Division one, two, and three college championships
- 12:42for both men and women. D is for the defense
- 12:48deflecting shots on go. Each steering defender has a special
- 12:53row full box stoppers sweepers. They keep a game low scoring.
- 12:58The ways they break up plays are anything but boring.
- 13:03Defenders are also called full backs, are the last line
- 13:08of defense in front of the goalkeeper. Their primary mission
- 13:12is to take the ball from the other team, but
- 13:14defenders also begin their own team's offense. Defenders try to
- 13:18get the ball and pass it to the teammate. The
- 13:21stopper is the defensive player responsible for making sure the
- 13:24other team's top scoring player doesn't succeed. The sweeper rooms
- 13:29from side to side, sweeping the area clear of the
- 13:32ball that has gotten by other defenders. DA is also dribbling,
- 13:36moving the ball by controlling it with your feet. In
- 13:39Diego's Wonder in nineteen eighty six, Diego Maradonna led Argentina's
- 13:45national team to the World Cup title after dribbling passed
- 13:49through and around nearly the entire English team during a
- 13:53World Cup game. Mardonna left the goaltenders sprawled on the
- 13:58grass as he kicked the ball into an open net.
- 14:01The go called Diego's Wonder, was one of the most
- 14:04electrifying fees in soccer history. Eleven players to a side
- 14:13that's the letter E forwards, midfielders, defenders, and the brave goal.
- 14:18Leeue is also England, where soccer first was played and
- 14:21where excitement for the game will likely never fade. Midfielders
- 14:26also called halfbacks, dribbling past the ball looking for scoring chances.
- 14:31Forwards are usually responsible for scoring goals. The forward, also
- 14:36called a striker, is the one who plays closest to
- 14:39the opposing team's goal. Commonly, teams use three or four forwards,
- 14:44two or three midfielders, and four defenders. It depends on
- 14:48the coaches style. Although game similar to soccer was played
- 14:52in the Far East more than two thousand years ago,
- 14:55modern soccer has its roots in England. Many English schools
- 14:59played various versions of a kicking game in the early
- 15:02eighteen hundreds, but it wasn't until eighteen forty eight that
- 15:06a group gathered and wrote the first soccer rules. As
- 15:09British sailors traveled the world, they often organized soccer games
- 15:13which spread the game to all parts of the globe,
- 15:16particularly throughout Europe and South America. F stands for football,
- 15:21but not the North American game to everyone else on
- 15:24the globe. That is soccer's real name. F is filled
- 15:27fifty yards wide and fancy shout and war is forwarded
- 15:31using fancy footwork as they tried to score. Soccer was
- 15:36originally known as association football in eighteen sixties. English schoolboys
- 15:41liked to nickname things by adding er to the word.
- 15:45For example, rugby was often called rugger, so association football,
- 15:49which shortened to associate, which means associer. Eventually this involved
- 15:56into soccer. Still the game is called football nearly every
- 16:00except the United States and Canada. There's no standard size
- 16:03for a soccer field. The British called it a soccer pitch.
- 16:07Rules for rules call for the game to be played
- 16:10on a rectangular field that is between one hundred and
- 16:13one hundred and thirty yards long between five hundred and
- 16:17one hundred yards wide. The boundary lines at either end
- 16:21of the field are goal lines, while the side boundaries
- 16:24are touch lines. The center circle in the middle of
- 16:27the field, measuring ten yards across with the center line
- 16:30dividing it in half, is where the game begins. G
- 16:38G is for the goalkeeper with one glove on each hand,
- 16:41who guards the nets so expertly and makes the team's
- 16:45last stand. The goal he guards is eight feet high
- 16:48and twenty four feet wide. His job is to make
- 16:51sure he doesn't let the ball inside. The goalkeeper is
- 16:56the only player on a team who may use his
- 16:58hands other than when a player is a boarded a
- 17:00throw in. He guards the go within a rectangular penalty
- 17:05area that measures forty four yards wide and extends eighteen
- 17:08yards from the goal line. The go area is a
- 17:11smaller rectangle twenty yards wide and extending six yards in
- 17:15front of the go. After the goalkeeper catches the ball
- 17:18or picks it up off the ground, and may be
- 17:21thrown or dropped kicked into play. Gee is also for
- 17:24Gordon Banks and the greatest save ever. Banks was a
- 17:28goalkeeper who led England to the nineteen sixty six World
- 17:32Cup Championship. Four years later, in the same tournament, his
- 17:36team faced Brazil and the Great Pilas. Ten minutes into
- 17:41the game, with Banks standing near the left host of
- 17:44the go pile headed a ball towards the right side
- 17:49of the net. Banks dived full with of the go
- 17:53and nanshad get a hand on the ball, it flew
- 17:56over the go. His tree's greatest saves h is for
- 18:01using your head to redirect a shot. Handballs are illegal,
- 18:05but hard heads are not. Just watch the ball store
- 18:08your way time your late just right and help your
- 18:11knock and meets the soccer ball in flight. A header
- 18:15is to strike the ball using one's head. A header
- 18:18may be a defensive play, such as clearing the ball,
- 18:21or it may be offensive, such as a pastor shot
- 18:24on a go. Two of soccer's best and heading were
- 18:27Hungarias Sandor Coxes, who was the top scorer in the
- 18:32nineteen fifty four World Cup, and West Germany's Ooh Sealer,
- 18:37who scored using the header shot in four different World
- 18:40Cup tournaments. Both were nicknamed the Golden Head. It has
- 18:44been estimated that a soccer player heads the ball an
- 18:47average of six times per game and many more times
- 18:50during practice, so proper technique, such as trying to use
- 18:54the thickest part of the skull the forehead to head
- 18:57the ball is important to prevent heading injuries. A handball
- 19:01is not allowed in soccer, but the term hand actually
- 19:04includes any part of the arm below the armpit. Only
- 19:07the goaltender may use his hands. If another player uses hands,
- 19:11the other team is awarded an indirect freak kick from
- 19:15where the hand touched the ball. This happens inside the
- 19:18go area. A player may kick it directly toward the go.
- 19:25Indoor soccer, that's our choice for the letter I. The
- 19:29pace is fast and furious. The scores are rather high.
- 19:32The game is often played on turf inside a hockey rink.
- 19:35A goal could happen anytime, so indoor fans don't blink.
- 19:40The first recorded indoor soccer match took place in Canada
- 19:44in eighteen ninety five, when two teams faced off in
- 19:47a roller skating rink. Today, many indoor fields around the
- 19:51country have been built specifically for the game. The number
- 19:54of players per side varies in indoor soccer according to
- 19:58the league in the size of the field. Indoor games
- 20:01are usually divided into four fifteen minute quarters, and coaches
- 20:05can substitute players anytime during the game, is often as
- 20:10needed to allow tire players time to rest. Like hockey,
- 20:13players are sent to a penalty box for major fouls,
- 20:18and like basketball, there's a three point arc. A goal
- 20:22scored from more than forty five feet away is worth
- 20:25three points. Jays for the Jerseys soccer players where but
- 20:29often in big matches, opponents tend to share a gesture
- 20:34of respect. After a game ends, They simply swap their
- 20:37jerseys as if they were old friends. The world of
- 20:41soccer international expedition match is often called a friendly. Nothing
- 20:46supports this term more than the traditional practice of swapping
- 20:50jerseys with a worthy opponent at the end of a match.
- 20:53Often players put on their opponent's jersey immediately right on
- 20:56the field. This postgame tradition has been to Brazilian superstar Pillay,
- 21:04who offered his jersey to England's captain Bobby Moore after
- 21:08this nineteen seventy World Cup final. More offered his jersey
- 21:12in return, and their tradition began. Kay Mus teamed for kick,
- 21:18of course, a shot aimed straight and true. There are
- 21:21so many different types, but we'll just name a few.
- 21:24Bicycle kicks, goal kicks, corner kicks as well. Will the
- 21:28ball land in the net? Only time will tell. A
- 21:31bicycle kick is an acrobatic shot in which a player
- 21:34kicks the ball in midair backward and over his own head.
- 21:38Is one of the most athletic and exciting moves in soccer.
- 21:42Longtime US national team star Marcelo Balboa was famous for
- 21:46bicycle kicks, including one shot during the two thousand Major
- 21:50League Soccer season that was voted Goal of the Year.
- 21:54The tacking team kicks the ball over the goal line,
- 21:57but not into the goal. The defending team is a
- 21:59war to go kick. Goalkicks are taken from within the
- 22:03goal area and must travel beyond the penalty area and
- 22:07are usually taken by the goalkeeper, but any player can
- 22:10take the kick. The defensive team kicks the ball over
- 22:13the goal line. The opposing team is awarded a corner
- 22:16kick from the quarter circle mark where the goal line
- 22:20and touched like meat, the kicker boots the ball into
- 22:23the goal area. Many goals are scored in this manner,
- 22:27usually by teammates time in the past and heading the
- 22:30ball into the goal. Ellis for the ladies who played
- 22:33the game they love. The US women's national team is
- 22:37a cut above. In nineteen ninety nine, a jam packed
- 22:41Rosebow crowd watched them win the World Cup and cheer
- 22:44them long and loud. An official US women's soccer team
- 22:48wasn't established until nineteen eighty five, but quickly American women
- 22:52have proved themselves the best in the world, with victories
- 22:56in the first ever Women's World Cup in nineteen ninety one,
- 22:59the first one held in the US in nineteen ninety nine,
- 23:02as well as a gold medal at the nineteen ninety
- 23:05six Summer Olympics, celebrated with ninety two thousand screaming fans.
- 23:10In nineteen eighty, just over four eight thousand girls played
- 23:13high school soccer, and there were only a few dozen
- 23:16women's college teams. But by two thousand, nearly two hundred
- 23:20seventy thousand girls were competing in high school and nearly
- 23:24eight hundred colleges In the Cuba field of varsity women's squads.
- 23:30More than two hundred and sixty thousand girls compete on
- 23:33American youth soccer or gignation teams. During two thousand and two,
- 23:38more than three hundred seven thousand girls under eighteen were
- 23:42playing soccer in Canada. Following the excitement of the nineteen
- 23:45ninety nine Women's World Cup, a women's professional league emerged,
- 23:50the Women's United Soccer Association. In two thousand, US national
- 23:55team legend Michelle Agers was named the Women's Player of
- 24:00the Century. M is for Major League Soccer and all
- 24:05the soccer pros who make the mark on US soil
- 24:07against talented foes. The Mutiny, the Galaxy, the Burn, the Clash,
- 24:12the Crew, the Metro Stars, the Fusion, the Revolution to
- 24:17the United States was awarded the honor of hosting the
- 24:20nineteen ninety four World Cup was on the condition that
- 24:23a professional league would be established in America. Nineteen ninety six,
- 24:27Major League Soccer began in the US. In Canada, the
- 24:31National Soccer League later the Canadian National Soccer League, was
- 24:35the top league in Canada. The Canadian Professional Soccer League
- 24:39that started in nineteen ninety seven replaced it. M is
- 24:43also for Magnificent mag Yards, the nickname of the Hungarian
- 24:47national team, led by Captain Frank Buscus, who was known
- 24:52as the Galloping Major. Hungaria went undefeated in thirty fourth
- 24:56straight international matches from nineteen fifty to nineteen fifty four,
- 25:01before losing to West Germany in the nineteen fifty four
- 25:05World Cup finals. The North Carolina women's team that's the
- 25:11letter in with eighteen national titles, the best that's ever been.
- 25:16Their nervous fan cheer throughout ninety min it's of fun,
- 25:20never letting up until the soccer game is won. The
- 25:23University of North Carolina's women's soccer team represents one of
- 25:27the great dynasties in the history of intercollegiate sports. Coach
- 25:31Anne Saint Durance started the varsity program in nineteen seventy nine.
- 25:36Two years later, the Tar Hills won their first national title.
- 25:39They went on to win seventeen more over the next
- 25:42nineteen years. More than sixty different North Carolina players have
- 25:46earned All America honors, and nearly forty of them have
- 25:49gone on to play for the US national team. And
- 25:53is also for the number nineteen from North Carolina Mia Hamm,
- 25:57the finest and most recognized women's soccer player in the world.
- 26:01Ham's number nineteen jersey has been retired, meaning no other
- 26:05female soccer player can wear number nineteen. At the University
- 26:09of North Carolina. She has played on two winning World
- 26:13Cup teams and an Olympic go medal team. Nineteen ninety nine,
