Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: We are up and running with this preview edition of
- 0:12Speaker 1: Birds Weekly presented by the Inside of the Birds Network
- 0:15Speaker 1: for my colleague and friend Ray Didn't Jer. I'm Derek Gunn,
- 0:18Speaker 1: And it's a short week the Las Vegas Raiders and
- 0:25Speaker 1: now they have to get ready for a divisional showdown
- 0:28Speaker 1: against the lowly but yet better than Raiders Washington Commanders,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and Ray. We find out that Jadon Daniels, you know,
- 0:36Speaker 1: who's had all kinds of problems with his elbow. He
- 0:38Speaker 1: is being shut down for the rest of the season.
- 0:41Speaker 1: And now this is the Marcus Mariota Show. What worries
- 0:46Speaker 1: you about the Eagles facing a Marcus Mariota. I mean,
- 0:49Speaker 1: he was here briefly, didn't last long. He was a
- 0:52Speaker 1: high draft pick in the National Football League's career hasn't
- 0:55Speaker 1: panned out. But now this is his show with Washington
- 0:58Speaker 1: for the remainder of this season.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, every time I see Marcus Mariota, I think about
- 1:03Speaker 2: Marcus Mariota. I think back to when he was coming
- 1:06Speaker 2: out of Oregon. Yeah, and there was that big movement
- 1:11Speaker 2: afoot about the Eagles need to make the trade to
- 1:16Speaker 2: go up and get Marcus Mariota to run Chip Kelly's offense.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Remember that. Oh yeah, I mean people are actually wearing
- 1:23Speaker 2: T shirts that said do the deal, remember that to
- 1:25Speaker 2: go get Marcus Mariota. Because the idea was, well, we
- 1:29Speaker 2: got Chip Kelly here, let's bring in the quarterback, his
- 1:33Speaker 2: quarterback from Oregon to run that offense here. I mean,
- 1:36Speaker 2: to Wanta, heis a trophy. I mean, why not. Well,
- 1:40Speaker 2: we see how Marcus's career it didn't quite translate in
- 1:43Speaker 2: the NFL, and now he's just become sort of this. Actually,
- 1:49Speaker 2: you know, he and Jameis Winston went one two in
- 1:51Speaker 2: the draft, and their career trajectory is kind of the same.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I mean here they are both still in the league,
- 1:56Speaker 2: but they're both in backup roles. And you know Marcus,
- 2:01Speaker 2: you know, you look at the game that he played Sunday.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I mean they played against the Giants up at the
- 2:06Speaker 2: Meadowlands and they won the game and Marcus threw for
- 2:10Speaker 2: two hundred and eleven yards. But you know, he's still
- 2:12Speaker 2: the same. He he'll make some plays, you know, he'll
- 2:15Speaker 2: run some he'll he'll get he'll get you some you know,
- 2:17Speaker 2: he'll get you some first downs, run on the ball,
- 2:20Speaker 2: but he still makes mistakes. You know, he'll he'll he'll
- 2:22Speaker 2: make one or two mistakes in the game that very
- 2:25Speaker 2: often will cost you the game. And that's kind of
- 2:28Speaker 2: been the way his career is going. And Okay, this Sunday,
- 2:32Speaker 2: he kind of got away with it. I mean, he
- 2:34Speaker 2: turned the ball over. He fumbled twice, turned the ball over,
- 2:37Speaker 2: but they were playing the Giants, so it didn't cost him.
- 2:40Speaker 2: But I mean this game, I mean, he'll he'll complete
- 2:43Speaker 2: some passes because McLaurin is a is a real good receiver.
- 2:46Speaker 2: It looks like he's healthy now and he had a
- 2:47Speaker 2: good game against the Giants, so he'll make some plays,
- 2:50Speaker 2: he'll complete some passes, he'll run for a few first downs.
- 2:54Speaker 2: But somewhere in there, I mean, he'll make make a
- 2:57Speaker 2: bad throw or he'll get hit and he'll fumble, and
- 3:00Speaker 2: that'll and that'll be the game. I mean, that's just
- 3:02Speaker 2: kind of the that's just kind of the trajectory of
- 3:05Speaker 2: his career at this point. But if you're the Eagles,
- 3:08Speaker 2: you can't afford to take it for granted. You know,
- 3:10Speaker 2: the Eagles can't come off the Raiders game and think, Okay,
- 3:14Speaker 2: we're good, all our problems are solved. You know, we're fine. No,
- 3:18Speaker 2: I think right now, you want to keep You've got
- 3:21Speaker 2: some nice momentum coming off that game. You want to
- 3:24Speaker 2: keep it going in this game against Washington, and you know,
- 3:27Speaker 2: I would, I would expect that they will. Do You
- 3:30Speaker 2: realize when when the Washington and the Giants played this
- 3:35Speaker 2: Meadowlands on Sunday, they came into this between the two
- 3:39Speaker 2: of them, they had lost like fifteen straight games on
- 3:42Speaker 2: each one of them. I mean, are you kidding me?
- 3:44Speaker 2: I mean that's We've seen the NFC East be bad
- 3:48Speaker 2: in some years. I mean, the NFC East has had
- 3:51Speaker 2: some years where the bottom of the bottom of the
- 3:53Speaker 2: of the division is pretty bad. Man, it is really
- 3:56Speaker 2: bad this year. I can't figure this one. Washington team
- 4:00Speaker 2: out to save my life. A couple of weeks ago,
- 4:04Speaker 2: they take Denver to overtime. They had the perfect play
- 4:07Speaker 2: call for the two point conversion. They had a running
- 4:10Speaker 2: back wide open in the flats. All Marietta do had
- 4:13Speaker 2: to float it out there and it was over. But
- 4:15Speaker 2: the Denver defensive end, Bonita, jumps up in bats it
- 4:18Speaker 2: away and Denver wins the game twenty seven to twenty six.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Then the following week they played the Vikings and gets
- 4:25Speaker 2: shut out thirty one nothing.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And so they come back this Sunday they beat a
- 4:30Speaker 1: Giants team that had a losing streak. As long as
- 4:32Speaker 1: there's the Giants that have an eight game losing streak,
- 4:35Speaker 1: Washington had an eight game losing streak going into that game.
- 4:38Speaker 2: They hadn't won a.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Game since October fifth. You know, and I look at
- 4:43Speaker 1: this team. They have talent, ray but for some reason,
- 4:46Speaker 1: they haven't been able to put it together. Sitting at
- 4:48Speaker 1: four and ten right now.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's not just losing Daniels. I mean, and
- 4:54Speaker 2: he he clearly was. He was their spark last year.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I mean, he was the reason that they got to
- 4:59Speaker 2: the Chairampionship game. I mean, he was fantastic. He really was.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Uh and he's been hurt and out of the lineup mostly.
- 5:06Speaker 2: But it's not just that. I mean they're just not
- 5:08Speaker 2: they're just not playing well. I mean even this game
- 5:11Speaker 2: against the Giants, even on a game that they won, Derek,
- 5:15Speaker 2: they committed eleven penalties, they fumbled four times. I mean
- 5:19Speaker 2: that's what they are right now. And you know, when
- 5:20Speaker 2: you saw the moves that they were making this offseason,
- 5:25Speaker 2: I think they really I think they really totally believed
- 5:29Speaker 2: that they were there that they had arrived. I mean,
- 5:31Speaker 2: it went to the championship game, because some of the
- 5:33Speaker 2: moves they made this offseason were geared we're sort of
- 5:36Speaker 2: short term kinds of let's get some veteran players here
- 5:39Speaker 2: to get us that final step. And I think they
- 5:43Speaker 2: overestimated just how far along in the process they were.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And you know they I mean, they had a real
- 5:51Speaker 2: fun year last year and Daniels was sensational and won
- 5:56Speaker 2: a lot of games right at the end and deserved
- 5:59Speaker 2: all the honors and the accolades. But you know, they
- 6:03Speaker 2: weren't that team yet, right, But I think they I
- 6:06Speaker 2: think they fooled themselves into thinking that they were, and
- 6:09Speaker 2: they made some short term moves to cocaine, Okay, now
- 6:12Speaker 2: we're really going to go for it, when they weren't
- 6:14Speaker 2: really a good enough team to go for it. And
- 6:17Speaker 2: now this year, with Daniel's being hurt, the bottom has
- 6:19Speaker 2: fallen out of it all together. And you know, to
- 6:23Speaker 2: their credit, I mean, I will say this, they do
- 6:25Speaker 2: continue to play hard. I mean, they played they played hard.
- 6:28Speaker 2: They didn't play particularly well, but they did play hard
- 6:31Speaker 2: and beating the Giants, and I suspect they're going to
- 6:34Speaker 2: come in here and play hard against the Eagles in
- 6:35Speaker 2: this game. So the Eagles can't afford to go down
- 6:38Speaker 2: there and take this game for granted.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Hey, I still like a good night out, but I'm

- 10:14Speaker 3: Cam din Apothecary top quality cannabis, great prices, and an
- 10:18Speaker 3: experience made for Philly fans twenty one and up.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I look at Washington's defensive personnel. You know, this is
- 10:26Speaker 1: a defense that's basically ranked thirty first in the National
- 10:31Speaker 1: Football League. You look at some of the personnel, you know,
- 10:34Speaker 1: Deron Payne, Javon Canlaw, Preston Smith, Frankieluvu, Bobby Wagner. The
- 10:39Speaker 1: personnel is there, and I can't believe that, as porous
- 10:44Speaker 1: as they are, they give it up one hundred and
- 10:45Speaker 1: thirty six yards a game rushing.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:47Speaker 1: But here's my concern, because we've seen this happen too often.
- 10:51Speaker 1: The Eagles offense seems to play down to these bottom
- 10:54Speaker 1: dwelling defenses, you know, Giants, Dallas, Chicago, Tampa Bay, and
- 10:59Speaker 1: then make these games a lot closer than they should be.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and they can't afford to let that happen. I mean,
- 11:05Speaker 2: that was one of the things that was most encouraging
- 11:09Speaker 2: about the Raiders game was up against a let's face it,
- 11:14Speaker 2: a bad team that the Eagles came out and took
- 11:16Speaker 2: control right away. I mean they took They took the
- 11:20Speaker 2: opening kickoff, drove at the length of the field, scored
- 11:23Speaker 2: a touchdown, up seven to nothing, and they were in
- 11:26Speaker 2: complete command of the game. But we've seen other other
- 11:29Speaker 2: weeks when they go out there and the first quarter
- 11:33Speaker 2: or three and out, three and out, and he winds
- 11:36Speaker 2: up against an inferior opponent in the second half, all
- 11:40Speaker 2: of a sudden, it's a three point game, a six
- 11:41Speaker 2: point game. And you don't need to do that against
- 11:45Speaker 2: a team that you outclass to the degree that they're
- 11:48Speaker 2: going to outclass Washington. The Eagles really kind of have
- 11:51Speaker 2: to take the same approach in this game, and that
- 11:53Speaker 2: just get get on top right away and just don't
- 11:56Speaker 2: ever let Washington feel like they have a chance to
- 11:58Speaker 2: win MHM.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Because it's a divisional game. You just never know what
- 12:06Speaker 1: could possibly happen in this game, and I'm sure Washington's
- 12:08Speaker 1: mindset has to be we played a role of spoiler.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Now let's go see if we can spoil some of
- 12:14Speaker 1: the Eagles joy right now. I expected to be another
- 12:17Speaker 1: one of those backyard brass knuckle type divisional games between
- 12:21Speaker 1: these two.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think I think it's I think it's
- 12:26Speaker 2: going to be a rock fight. I really do.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Uh.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to be anything like thirty
- 12:31Speaker 2: one nothing. I don't think it's going to be you know,
- 12:34Speaker 2: I don't think you're going to cruise through this one,
- 12:37Speaker 2: because again, this team is this team's playing pretty hard,
- 12:40Speaker 2: not particularly well, not particularly smart, but they're playing pretty hard. Uh.
- 12:44Speaker 2: And I think it's going to be a battle, you know.
- 12:48Speaker 2: And I mean, the Eagles once again are the better team,
- 12:52Speaker 2: but I think they I think they feel they know
- 12:56Speaker 2: they know that right now, it's important with the way
- 12:58Speaker 2: this season has gone, they need to build on what
- 13:02Speaker 2: they came up, what they got going in the in
- 13:05Speaker 2: the Raider game, I mean, they really had a get right,
- 13:08Speaker 2: feel good kind of emotion coming out of that game,
- 13:13Speaker 2: especially the quarterback. And you don't want to backslide now,
- 13:17Speaker 2: you know you want to you want to take that
- 13:19Speaker 2: and just keep moving it forward. And against this team,
- 13:22Speaker 2: I mean, I think you're going to have a chance
- 13:24Speaker 2: to do it. The one thing I will say, having
- 13:25Speaker 2: watched Washington now a little bit, their safety play is
- 13:30Speaker 2: pretty good. They have Antonio Hamilton and Kwan Martin or
- 13:34Speaker 2: the safety pair. Uh, and they're pretty good. Uh, they're
- 13:40Speaker 2: pretty good. And they they both played very well in
- 13:42Speaker 2: the game against the Giants. And you know, they're They're
- 13:46Speaker 2: an example of two guys that nobody's really heard much about. Uh,
- 13:50Speaker 2: I haven't gotten much fanfare. But they play, but they played.
- 13:55Speaker 2: They play smart and they played and they're very physical,
- 13:57Speaker 2: tough kids, and you know, those are the kind of
- 14:00Speaker 2: guys you can't get careless with. You get careless with them.
- 14:03Speaker 2: They could wind up taking the ball away, which they
- 14:05Speaker 2: did in the game against the Giants. So Washington has
- 14:08Speaker 2: some players. I mean, even without Daniels, they still got
- 14:11Speaker 2: some players, But I mean the Eagles have more.
- 14:15Speaker 1: All right, Well, who do you like in this game?
- 14:17Speaker 2: And why? Again? The Eagles are The Eagles are clearly
- 14:21Speaker 2: the better team here. And I think that there's I
- 14:26Speaker 2: think there's a little bit of a sense of urgency
- 14:28Speaker 2: with the Eagles right now that the kind of season
- 14:30Speaker 2: this has been, and Lord knows, with all the with
- 14:33Speaker 2: all the concern and you know, all the all that
- 14:36Speaker 2: was coming down on them a week ago before the
- 14:38Speaker 2: Raiders game. You know, they don't want to open that
- 14:41Speaker 2: door again. You know, they sort of have put that
- 14:43Speaker 2: to rest for the time being, and I think don't
- 14:45Speaker 2: want to go back there again. So I think they'll
- 14:47Speaker 2: be pretty focused. I think they'll be I think they'll
- 14:50Speaker 2: be more than pretty focused. I think they'll be very
- 14:51Speaker 2: focused going into this game. Uh. And I expected to
- 14:55Speaker 2: go down there and take care of business. And I
- 14:57Speaker 2: would say, I'm going to take the Eagles to win
- 14:59Speaker 2: the game. And I'm gonna say twenty seven to twelve,
- 15:05Speaker 2: oh twelve. I have all numbers. You picked a twelve.
- 15:09Speaker 2: You know, I couldn't.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I couldn't agree with you more. I just think that
- 15:14Speaker 1: when you line up man for man position position, the
- 15:17Speaker 1: Eagles are by far the superior team. But as that
- 15:20Speaker 1: old saying goes, when it comes to divisional games, throw
- 15:23Speaker 1: everything else out of the out of the window. And
- 15:26Speaker 1: so with that said, I think it's gonna be a
- 15:28Speaker 1: little bit closer game, especially because it's down there in
- 15:31Speaker 1: Washington's place. If it was up here, I think it
- 15:34Speaker 1: would be a little bit wider margin. But because it's
- 15:37Speaker 1: down there, I'm gonna say the Eagles win this game
- 15:39Speaker 1: like twenty twenty four to twenty. All Right, that's gonna
- 15:45Speaker 1: wrap up this preview edition between the Eagles and the
- 15:47Speaker 1: Washington Commanders. For Ray Dinger, I'm Derek Gunn. We will
- 15:50Speaker 1: talk to you next week after the game. So long, everybody,
- 16:00Speaker 1: I'll let you let out
