2:51
Speaker 3: want to welcome to the end of the show. Starting
2:53
Speaker 3: us off this morning, Justin Knapp, who is the project
2:55
Speaker 3: director for a group called Bridging Resources West Virginia and
2:58
Speaker 3: they have a program called Home for the holidays, and
3:01
Speaker 3: he started to talk about justin good morning, welcome to
3:03
Speaker 3: the show, Good morning, Thank you for having me, thank
3:05
Speaker 3: you for being at first. Tell me about the group
3:07
Speaker 3: Bridging Resources West Virginia.
3:08
Speaker 5: So, Bridging Resource West Virginia. It's a state wide initiative.
3:11
Speaker 5: It's state wide program. It's a network of organizations across
3:14
Speaker 5: the state to help those that have long term services
3:17
Speaker 5: and needs, whether you have a disability, whether you're aging,
3:20
Speaker 5: to help you find those services in your community so
3:22
Speaker 5: that you can live independently in your home without having.
3:26
Speaker 3: To go to the facility.
3:26
Speaker 5: It's helping people live independently in their homes and helping
3:29
Speaker 5: them succeed in life.
3:31
Speaker 3: And I was do a little bit of research last
3:34
Speaker 3: night on the program and about this service. And sometimes,
3:37
Speaker 3: you know, our seniors, as you said, there's many of
3:39
Speaker 3: them that don't or anybody for that matter that doesn't
3:41
Speaker 3: necessarily they're not ready for the home so to speak.
3:46
Speaker 3: They want to stay in their own homes, but they
3:47
Speaker 3: just don't know where to get the resources, what all
3:50
Speaker 3: is available. And that's where you come in.
3:51
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's where we come in. So we are partnered
3:53
Speaker 5: with a lot of agencies across the state. It's a
3:55
Speaker 5: state wide initiative, like I said, and so that they
3:57
Speaker 5: can actually we have a website and we have phone
3:59
Speaker 5: numbers they can call, and it's all free service for
4:01
Speaker 5: n of it. And it's not just aging pop visions.
4:03
Speaker 5: It's anybody that needs any long term services and cares,
4:07
Speaker 5: whether it be an individual with a disability that's under
4:09
Speaker 5: you know, the age of sixty. It's those individuals that
4:11
Speaker 5: help them that live that independently.
4:14
Speaker 3: And there are a lot of different services out there.
4:16
Speaker 3: Oh yes, that a lot of times justin people just
4:18
Speaker 3: don't know about it.
4:18
Speaker 5: And they don't and that's and then they don't even
4:20
Speaker 5: know if they're in the back of their in their
4:21
Speaker 5: own backyard, they have no idea what's available to them.
4:24
Speaker 5: And a lot of times even the organizations, the providers
4:27
Speaker 5: don't know what other programs are doing, or they're doing
4:29
Speaker 5: duplicate of services where they need to have it a
4:32
Speaker 5: lot and they need to work together so they can
4:34
Speaker 5: help the individual.
4:35
Speaker 3: And that's what it's all about. Because that's a very
4:37
Speaker 3: good point that you brought up, justin because a lot
4:39
Speaker 3: of times people don't know where the services are. But
4:42
Speaker 3: sometimes individual agencies don't know that across town there's somebody
4:46
Speaker 3: doing the exact same thing. That if we were able
4:48
Speaker 3: to work together, or you do A and you do B,
4:51
Speaker 3: absolutely it all works out there.
4:52
Speaker 5: And that's the idea of it, is that it's a
4:54
Speaker 5: larger network where they all work together to help the individual.
4:57
Speaker 5: Because I think of it like this, when somebody needs
4:59
Speaker 5: a st service and so they don't have to call
5:01
Speaker 5: ten different people, they call one person and that they
5:04
Speaker 5: work for that individual because it's stressful whenever you're you
5:07
Speaker 5: turn sixty and you have fill your Medicare applications or
5:10
Speaker 5: you have a disability, you don't know who to turn to,
5:12
Speaker 5: and people are just giving you phone numbers. A call,
5:14
Speaker 5: you call one entity and they do the work for you.
5:16
Speaker 5: And that's the idea.
5:17
Speaker 3: Give me an idea of some of the services that
5:20
Speaker 3: you can range them.
5:21
Speaker 5: Home modification program say somebody needs to live any plant
5:24
Speaker 5: at home, they need a ramp and building their home
5:26
Speaker 5: to stay at home so they don't have to go
5:28
Speaker 5: to a facility and they so they can call and
5:30
Speaker 5: there's home modification programs in the state. Or if they
5:32
Speaker 5: need food in their home, or if they need help
5:34
Speaker 5: with transportation. It's limitless in the sense of what we
5:39
Speaker 5: can do to help. And that's the idea of it
5:41
Speaker 5: is because usually when somebody calls it, they ask for
5:43
Speaker 5: one thing, but it's more. They sometimes need more one
5:46
Speaker 5: thing and they didn't even realize it. Yeah, you know.
5:47
Speaker 5: And it's helping get medications, helping prescriptions, and they build
5:50
Speaker 5: a system around that individual, whether it's calling a local
5:54
Speaker 5: church and then community calling friends down the street. They
5:57
Speaker 5: build a plan around an individual to help them do that.
6:00
Speaker 3: Talking again with Justin Napp, who is the project director
6:03
Speaker 3: for Bridging Resources West Virginia, The Dave Island Show on
6:06
Speaker 3: five Eddie Live is brought to you bright by Husband's Pizza.
6:08
Speaker 3: Check out the Holiday pack. You can get a large
6:09
Speaker 3: eighteen h Hustan's Pepperoni pizza, ten bread stix, twelve hot
6:13
Speaker 3: wings and a two liter Pepsi only thirty three ninety
6:15
Speaker 3: nine gets your nearest Hustans for delivery, pick up or
6:17
Speaker 3: dining in at Hustan's Pizza dot com. Now you've got
6:19
Speaker 3: this project or this in the next phase that you're
6:22
Speaker 3: doing in this program, I should say called Home for
6:24
Speaker 3: the Holidays.
6:25
Speaker 5: Talking about that, it's a current campaign we're running. So
6:27
Speaker 5: the idea of is to do informative campaigns and individuals
6:30
Speaker 5: and the idea is this one is this holy season.
6:33
Speaker 5: We're encouraging families with aging loved ones to start a conversation,
6:36
Speaker 5: to start because it could be the best give you
6:37
Speaker 5: get a gift you give your loved ones to start
6:40
Speaker 5: conversation about how are they living, how is everything moving
6:43
Speaker 5: in their house? Are they walking well? Are they forgetting
6:46
Speaker 5: stuff during a conversation? Is they're unpaid bills? Start that
6:50
Speaker 5: conversation with loved ones because maybe you haven't seen them
6:52
Speaker 5: in a year and a lot of things have changed,
6:54
Speaker 5: and a lot of times people start these conversations too late.
6:57
Speaker 3: Now you need to.
6:58
Speaker 5: Plan these things and people, I know there's hesitancy and
7:02
Speaker 5: it's it's very concerning sometimes, but this is what you
7:04
Speaker 5: need to do when you're when you're coming home to
7:06
Speaker 5: loved ones and aging aging parents to see that hey,
7:09
Speaker 5: what can we do to help? How can we start
7:11
Speaker 5: that process? And you've got to be careful how to
7:13
Speaker 5: do that? You know that perfect because you don't want
7:16
Speaker 5: to insult them, that's absolutely and if you need help
7:18
Speaker 5: with it, we can help. We actually have community resource
7:21
Speaker 5: specialists as you can call in as an individual you
7:24
Speaker 5: just because you don't have to have the disability to
7:26
Speaker 5: call in if you need help. Talking to parents, talking
7:28
Speaker 5: agent loved ones will help anybody.
7:31
Speaker 6: Uh.
7:31
Speaker 3: And again, those conversations can be kind of difficult, but
7:34
Speaker 3: you can help with bridging. Pardon the pid, you can,
7:37
Speaker 3: you can you can help bridge those conversations because sometimes
7:40
Speaker 3: people and I think it's true of West Virginians too,
7:44
Speaker 3: is we are a proud people and even sometimes to
7:47
Speaker 3: our own family members, we don't want to admit that
7:51
Speaker 3: we're having an issue of some sort of We don't
7:53
Speaker 3: want to reach out for help.
7:54
Speaker 5: And a lot of times it's not only that, it's
7:55
Speaker 5: like people are somebody needs it more than I do.
7:58
Speaker 3: You're very proud in that sense.
7:59
Speaker 5: I'm doing okay, but the services are there for everybody. Yes,
8:03
Speaker 5: and and and that's why I love being a West
8:05
Speaker 5: Gum born and raised in Boone.
8:06
Speaker 3: County, Okay. You know, all right, I'm one county over
8:10
Speaker 3: from Logan County, Okay.
8:12
Speaker 5: But yeah, we have you know, it's this connection that
8:15
Speaker 5: West Virginians have with each other. But at the same time,
8:17
Speaker 5: we need to ask for help. And I know that
8:18
Speaker 5: is the tough part, but that's why we're here to
8:20
Speaker 5: help those individuals find those services. And that's why we
8:23
Speaker 5: even have we have a website brsh WV dot org
8:27
Speaker 5: where they can actually get on and research their own
8:28
Speaker 5: information and they can find local entities and local community
8:32
Speaker 5: providers in their area to help them out if they
8:35
Speaker 5: don't want to call.
8:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, if they want to do it themselves. So, how
8:39
Speaker 3: how do you fund this program?
8:40
Speaker 5: We're fun so it's a state and federally funded. It's
8:43
Speaker 5: through UH through money falls a person. It's a program
8:46
Speaker 5: that's a federal UH federal initiative, and then we get
8:49
Speaker 5: federal funding from that and also state match too.
8:52
Speaker 3: And I like the whole idea behind this campaign because,
8:54
Speaker 3: as you said, home for the holidays, that generally speaking,
8:56
Speaker 3: that's when families get together, as you said, sometimes they
8:59
Speaker 3: haven't seen each other in a year or so, when
9:00
Speaker 3: everybody's kind of together, and it'd be a good time
9:04
Speaker 3: to ask folks again, this program is not just for
9:07
Speaker 3: older folks. I mean, we're kind of focusing on it,
9:09
Speaker 3: but it's not just for older.
9:09
Speaker 5: Folks, right, No, it's for everybody, anybody that needs any
9:12
Speaker 5: long term services. And when people hear that, they hear
9:15
Speaker 5: long term services, they think like nursing homes. But no,
9:17
Speaker 5: it's if you need something to help you live independently
9:20
Speaker 5: in your home.
9:21
Speaker 3: That's a long term service.
9:22
Speaker 5: If you're if you're twenty years old and you have
9:24
Speaker 5: a disability and you need a ramp built, potentially, you know,
9:27
Speaker 5: that's a long term thing that you need to help
9:29
Speaker 5: you live independently. So it can be for anybody that
9:31
Speaker 5: needs those long term services and supports.
9:34
Speaker 3: Give us the website again.
9:35
Speaker 5: Now the website is brdsh WV dot org. And then

Speaker 3: thank you for having me. Now is this are you
14:30
Speaker 3: fully retired? He's still going to be doing some other things,
14:32
Speaker 3: you know. Do you know yet? I can't sit still.
14:34
Speaker 3: He let's you're the count of Gave. It's going to
14:36
Speaker 3: do something. Yeah, And here's what I've got lined up.
14:40
Speaker 6: As you may know, I write a weekly syndicated political
14:43
Speaker 6: column that's been out there for a dozen years.
14:45
Speaker 3: I will keep doing that.
14:47
Speaker 6: But the deep dark secret of my career is that
14:50
Speaker 6: I'm a professional movie extra. I'm a member of the
14:53
Speaker 6: Screen Actors Guild, and I started doing, you know, extra
14:56
Speaker 6: work on movies and TV shows when I was in
14:58
Speaker 6: California for a dozen years, and then I moved into
15:01
Speaker 6: England where they shoot a lot of movies and TV
15:03
Speaker 6: shows they don't really do much in West Virginia, but
15:06
Speaker 6: which is a shame. Really, they should bring back the
15:08
Speaker 6: film tax credits. That really crank it up. You don't
15:11
Speaker 6: state they do the most movies in this Georgia. Georgia, Yeah,
15:14
Speaker 6: because of the great film tax credits in the state.
15:17
Speaker 6: You know, it's a big economic boost.
15:19
Speaker 9: Yeah.
15:20
Speaker 3: Even a lot of game shows like like you know,
15:21
Speaker 3: like Steve Harvey's Family Feud is recorded in Georgia. Yeah,
15:25
Speaker 3: I mean they even even shows that aren't necessarily dramatic
15:28
Speaker 3: shows or fiction. I guess a lot of shows.
15:31
Speaker 6: Right. I'll give a shout out to former deligate Diana
15:33
Speaker 6: Graves Putnam County because she worked to get the film
15:35
Speaker 6: tax credits back. They just need to be expanded in somebody.
15:38
Speaker 6: The state needs a film commissioner.
15:40
Speaker 3: Be that.
15:40
Speaker 6: As it may, I'm moving to South Florida, where my
15:43
Speaker 6: wife lives in the Fort Lauderdale area, and so I'm
15:47
Speaker 6: working to get some contract work as a political analyst
15:50
Speaker 6: and some of the TV stations in Florida. South Florida,
15:52
Speaker 6: I worked in broadcasting. In fact, I got my master's
15:55
Speaker 6: degree in mass communication from the University of Florida, go
15:58
Speaker 6: Gators way back in nineteen and worked in radio and
16:01
Speaker 6: television in the Sunshine State for a grand total of
16:04
Speaker 6: fifteen years. So I'm looking forward to get back on
16:07
Speaker 6: the air down there. So fully retired, NOI retired. Yeah,
16:10
Speaker 6: I'm gonna be sitting by the pool side too, you know,
16:12
Speaker 6: playing a little bits, waiting on the phone to ring.
16:14
Speaker 3: That's what it is. Just when the phone rings all answered,
16:16
Speaker 3: give us the complete bio of Mark. And I know
16:19
Speaker 3: I've only got like fifteen minutes, because you've done a
16:21
Speaker 3: whole lot. You've been a whole lot of places, you know,
16:24
Speaker 3: in radio, like the WKRP in Cincinnati, theme up and
16:26
Speaker 3: down town, to talent up and down the dial. It's
16:30
Speaker 3: similar for people in television too. But tell us where
16:32
Speaker 3: was home for you? And how'd you get into this
16:34
Speaker 3: whole crazy business? To begin with?
16:35
Speaker 6: My career has been like the Johnny Cash song, I've
16:37
Speaker 6: been everywhere everywhere man. And I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
16:42
Speaker 6: and grew up there and lived there twenty five years
16:44
Speaker 6: and got my bachelor's degree in broadcasting from Marquette University
16:48
Speaker 6: and hosted a radio show with none other than my
16:51
Speaker 6: fellow student at Marquette Bob Odenkirk now I'm better call
16:55
Speaker 6: Saul and breaking bad fame and other things. That was
16:59
Speaker 6: a lot of fun. And then when I was twenty five,
17:01
Speaker 6: I was a musician for many years. I played piano
17:03
Speaker 6: and guitar and sang in bands and so forth. And
17:06
Speaker 6: when that ended, I moved to Florida. I wanted to
17:08
Speaker 6: get back into broadcasting, so I went back and got
17:10
Speaker 6: my master's degree and then worked all over Florida for
17:13
Speaker 6: like I say, fifteen years. Met my wife in Pensacola
17:16
Speaker 6: when I worked there on TV, and I got married.
17:18
Speaker 6: Now my daughter was born, my daughter that I talk
17:20
Speaker 6: about all the time. He was now a captain in
17:22
Speaker 6: the army. And then we moved to Washington, d C.
17:25
Speaker 6: I want a Congressional Fellowship for news reporters to work
17:28
Speaker 6: inside Congress and see how the sausage is actually made.
17:31
Speaker 6: It was fascinating. It was a Congressional fellowship through the
17:34
Speaker 6: American Political Science Association, best graduate school.
17:38
Speaker 3: You could ever go to.
17:39
Speaker 6: I mean, I saw things that I can't unsee, but
17:42
Speaker 6: it was fascinating to work behind the scenes. I worked
17:44
Speaker 6: for oddly then Congressman Chuck Schumer of New York. Now
17:48
Speaker 6: the Senate Majority leader and Senator Herb Cole from Wisconsin,
17:52
Speaker 6: from my home state. So I got to work in
17:53
Speaker 6: both the House and the Senate. In fact, while I
17:56
Speaker 6: worked with Senator Cole, I was worked on the confirmation
17:59
Speaker 6: here rings for Ruth Bader Ginsburg when she was nominated
18:02
Speaker 6: to the Supreme Court, because he was on the Judiciary Committee.
18:04
Speaker 6: So that was a once in a lifetime experience. Then
18:07
Speaker 6: I went back into broadcasting with Cox Media in their Washington,
18:11
Speaker 6: d C.
18:11
Speaker 3: Bureau.
18:11
Speaker 6: They had then about fifteen stations around the country, and
18:15
Speaker 6: after six years of doing that, the station in San
18:17
Speaker 6: Francisco said, we'd like you to move out here. I
18:19
Speaker 6: was on their station almost full time as a correspondent
18:22
Speaker 6: from DC, like eight times every morning, and they said,
18:25
Speaker 6: come on out and be our morning anchor. And I
18:27
Speaker 6: did that for about ten years and that job went away,
18:30
Speaker 6: and then the guy who had hired me there bought
18:32
Speaker 6: a station in Providence, Rhode Island.
18:34
Speaker 3: I moved there. Now we're back. I'm trying to picture
18:36
Speaker 3: this in my head. Now you're going back across the
18:37
Speaker 3: country again, to think ping pong, okay. And so I
18:40
Speaker 3: was in Providence, a great city, great seafood, just loved
18:45
Speaker 3: New England.
18:45
Speaker 6: It's so beautiful. And then that job went away and
18:48
Speaker 6: I got hired here. One of my former bosses from
18:51
Speaker 6: that company was running our TV station down in Beckley
18:53
Speaker 6: and they said, hey, we need to We've got then
18:56
Speaker 6: four stations. Now we're up to seven in the group,
18:59
Speaker 6: but we need a full time time correspondent at the
19:01
Speaker 6: capitol to cover the legislature and elections who are coming
19:04
Speaker 6: right into twenty sixteen for all of our TV stations.
19:08
Speaker 6: So that's the next our media group here in West Virginia,
19:11
Speaker 6: and it's it's been a riot. I've never loved the
19:14
Speaker 6: state as much as I've loved West Virginia. And the
19:16
Speaker 6: people here are the nicest people. I always say, I've
19:18
Speaker 6: been in forty six states. The nicest people in America
19:22
Speaker 6: are in the state of West Virginia. I'm really going
19:24
Speaker 6: to miss it, and I'll be back pretty often to visit.
19:27
Speaker 3: Talking to Mark Curtis again from I say WWKTV thirteen
19:30
Speaker 3: because that's where you are locally, but next our stations
19:33
Speaker 3: are all over the all over the state of West
19:35
Speaker 3: Virginia and the DC market as well. Talk about your
19:38
Speaker 3: love of West Virginia because you kind of you. You
19:41
Speaker 3: alluded to it there that you've now all these places, man,
19:44
Speaker 3: San Francisco, Florida, Providence, West Virginia was your favorite. I
19:49
Speaker 3: mean it was because of the people. It's interesting.
19:51
Speaker 6: We don't hear that enough. It's interesting. And I you know,
19:54
Speaker 6: i'd be a good spokesman for the Chamber of Commerce.
19:58
Speaker 6: You know, it's funny because Marry Amy Goodwin always says,
20:01
Speaker 6: I want to hire you to be the pr person
20:03
Speaker 6: for the city of Charleston because you just love that.
20:05
Speaker 3: Your passion for the city is so great.
20:07
Speaker 4: And and I.
20:11
Speaker 6: Say that West Virginia is the closest to my home
20:14
Speaker 6: state of Wisconsin, which I just loved in two ways.
20:18
Speaker 6: It's beauty, the natural beauty of both states and the
20:21
Speaker 6: kindness of the people. There's an old saying Wisconsin, you
20:27
Speaker 6: know you've dialed the wrong number when you've talked to
20:30
Speaker 6: the person for thirty minutes on the phone, even though
20:32
Speaker 6: you dialed somebody by accident. It's very welcoming. People are
20:37
Speaker 6: very warm. I'm a person of faith in the church.
20:41
Speaker 6: Community has embraced me here in my family, and it's just,
20:46
Speaker 6: you know, the one thing I was worried about when
20:48
Speaker 6: I was coming here because I'm a foodie. You know
20:50
Speaker 6: that you're a foodie eScience. I don't know who posts
20:53
Speaker 6: more food pictures on Facebook, you or me, but I
20:55
Speaker 6: you know. San Francisco is the greatest about tied with
20:59
Speaker 6: New Orleans is the best food city in America. So
21:01
Speaker 6: I was spoiled and I got to go with a
21:03
Speaker 6: lot cook with a lot of good chefs out there,
21:05
Speaker 6: and then to.
21:06
Speaker 3: Go to New England.
21:07
Speaker 6: Providence is the home of Johnson and Wales University, the
21:10
Speaker 6: largest culinary school in the world. The food is fabulous,
21:13
Speaker 6: Rhode Island's very Italian, and also you get the great
21:16
Speaker 6: seafood at reasonable prices right out of the drink. The
21:20
Speaker 6: best seafood is the freshest. So I was like, oh, well,
21:23
Speaker 6: you know what am I getting into going to West Virginia.
21:25
Speaker 6: They have biscuits and gravy and pold pork. Is that
21:29
Speaker 6: going to be the cuisine here? The restaurant scene in
21:32
Speaker 6: the city and the thrill of my lifetime was doing
21:35
Speaker 6: that half hour special and one hour special we just
21:37
Speaker 6: did with in the Kitchen with Chef Paul cooking a
21:40
Speaker 6: holiday meal which was to cook with the James Beard
21:43
Speaker 6: Award winning chef. I mean, you're you're not where they
21:46
Speaker 6: That guy is a rock star. I mean, and he's
21:48
Speaker 6: just a nice humblest eye and he's he's a native
21:51
Speaker 6: West Virginia too, and so that's he represents the best
21:54
Speaker 6: of our state.
21:55
Speaker 3: Talking to Mark Curtis again, who's going to be hanging
21:57
Speaker 3: it up as the political reporter the next to our
22:00
Speaker 3: group of stations including WWK TV thirteen, The Day Island
22:03
Speaker 3: Show on five. Any line is brought to you apart
22:05
Speaker 3: by Bridge Valley. If you're interested in proving your company's
22:07

Speaker 3: supply skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company. Check out
22:18
Speaker 3: Bridge Valley dot eedu slash apprenticeships today. All right, so
22:22
Speaker 3: talk about some of the big stories you covered in
22:26
Speaker 3: West Virginia since you've been here. I mean, some of
22:29
Speaker 3: the big political stories on some of the kind of
22:32
Speaker 3: that kind of stick out to you.
22:34
Speaker 6: The biggest story of my career and the biggest story
22:38
Speaker 6: of my stint in West Virginia was helping solve and
22:42
Speaker 6: helping get prosecuted the fake nurses aid at the Clarksburg,
22:48
Speaker 6: VA Medical Center who murdered some of our I believe
22:51
Speaker 6: seven or eight of our brave, brave US veterans. That
22:55
Speaker 6: was the sickest thing I have ever seen in my lifetime.
22:58
Speaker 6: She's in federal prison for life. I'm not going to
23:01
Speaker 6: mention her name. It's not worthy to pass it. We
23:04
Speaker 6: all know the story then, and we were the lead
23:07
Speaker 6: media outlet on that, and I got CBS News and
23:10
Speaker 6: one of my classmates from the University of Florida is
23:12
Speaker 6: the senior producer at CBS Evening News in Washington, DC.
23:16
Speaker 6: I got him to get a crew over here. A
23:18
Speaker 6: couple of times. We made a national story out of
23:20
Speaker 6: that and put a lot of pressure. And this is
23:23
Speaker 6: the political part of it, because I was they will
23:25
Speaker 6: tell you Senator Capital and Senator Mansion, Congressman McKinley and
23:29
Speaker 6: Congressman Mooney and Congresswoman Miller. I hounded them, hounded them
23:35
Speaker 6: and put a lot of pressure on them to get
23:37
Speaker 6: the bottom of what was going on inside the VA
23:40
Speaker 6: Medical Center. I mean, what happened. This lady came in
23:43
Speaker 6: and said, oh, I'm a nurse's aide. Well, nobody ever
23:45
Speaker 6: did a background check. Do you know that there's a
23:47
Speaker 6: database for the state of West Virginia. You can go
23:49
Speaker 6: on and check anybody's name and find out if they
23:52
Speaker 6: were a registered nurse, an LPN, or a CNA. All
23:55
Speaker 6: it took me to do that was thirty seconds. She
23:58
Speaker 6: had no license, she had no train, she had no background,
24:01
Speaker 6: and all of a sudden, she's given insulin shots to
24:03
Speaker 6: people who aren't even diabetics, in killing them for no
24:06
Speaker 6: reason at all. And then the crazy part, she she's
24:09
Speaker 6: got a Facebook page. What's her charity that she's raising
24:12
Speaker 6: money for the Wounded Warriors Foundation. I mean, it was
24:16
Speaker 6: just bizarre, it was, And we helped get to the
24:19
Speaker 6: bottom of that. Both Mike Stewart and the gentleman Bill
24:22
Speaker 6: Powell who is the US Attorney for the Northern District,
24:25
Speaker 6: were prosecuted that case and got to the bottom of it.
24:29
Speaker 6: And again the bottom line is we got closure for
24:32
Speaker 6: those family. I got to know some of the families
24:34
Speaker 6: quite well. And I want to give a shout out
24:35
Speaker 6: to my good friend, Attorney Tony O'Dell here in Charleston,
24:39
Speaker 6: because Tony represented most of those families and got justice
24:42
Speaker 6: for them too.
24:44
Speaker 3: And some of the some of the characters that we've
24:47
Speaker 3: had in the world of politics for the last couple
24:49
Speaker 3: of years. I mean, I would have to think that.
24:51
Speaker 3: And I know, talking to Brad and talking to Steven
24:53
Speaker 3: Allen Adams and Amelia Iicley and all those folks covering
24:56
Speaker 3: Governor now soon to be Senator Jim Justice. Never a
25:01
Speaker 3: dull moment. That is that a good way to put
25:03
Speaker 3: it what we're doing it for, baby doll. If you
25:06
Speaker 3: want to go leave it, Bob.
25:07
Speaker 6: Evans, I'll tell you a funny story. So we're at
25:10
Speaker 6: the governor's mansion and I think it was on a
25:12
Speaker 6: primary night or something, and I'm outside with the scrum
25:15
Speaker 6: of other reporters and we're Governor Justice. No surprise, was
25:19
Speaker 6: not hot time. He was about forty five minutes he
25:22
Speaker 6: was going to come out and talk to us. So
25:23
Speaker 6: I'm standing there with my back to the door, and
25:25
Speaker 6: I'm doing that well. If you want to want to
25:27
Speaker 6: go to the go to the Green Briar, And.
25:29
Speaker 3: All of a sudden, I feel this tap on my
25:30
Speaker 3: shoulder and I turn around and.
25:32
Speaker 6: There's Governor just Y. He was standing behind me as
25:35
Speaker 6: I was impersonating him. He goes you do me really well,
25:39
Speaker 6: he laughed. I mean, you know what of famous people say,
25:42
Speaker 6: the biggest honor of being a famous person is when
25:44
Speaker 6: you know rich little or other comments mimic you and
25:47
Speaker 6: impersonate you. And so that was funny. We've had a
25:49
Speaker 6: very good relationship. He's a fascinating character. It's going to
25:53
Speaker 6: be interesting to seek.
25:54
Speaker 2: You know.
25:54
Speaker 6: By his own admission, he says, I'm not a DC guy.
25:57
Speaker 6: You know, you just don't see him being part of
26:00
Speaker 6: the people who get Potomac fever. He just is not
26:03
Speaker 6: a DC insider. So sometimes that works well in DC,
26:07
Speaker 6: and sometimes it rubs against the grain and rubs against
26:10
Speaker 6: the leadership and people don't like it. But it's gonna
26:13
Speaker 6: be interesting to watch. I wish i'd be there to
26:14
Speaker 6: cover it, quite honestly.
26:15
Speaker 3: And you covered the world of politics during COVID, and
26:20
Speaker 3: I was a state employee at the time, and I
26:21
Speaker 3: was working at the capitol, and of course most of
26:23
Speaker 3: the offices, you know, for the most part, were shut
26:25
Speaker 3: down at least there for a time. So you anybody
26:30
Speaker 3: that was in the media at that time will certainly
26:33
Speaker 3: never forget that, but especially that you know, first, let's
26:35
Speaker 3: say five six months into COVID what it was like
26:39
Speaker 3: and trying to cover these things. It was eerie.
26:41
Speaker 6: I remember having to sit in the House and Senate
26:44
Speaker 6: galleries with my camera and shoot from up there. We
26:46
Speaker 6: weren't down in the well of the House or the
26:48
Speaker 6: Senate like we normally are. And we made it work.
26:52
Speaker 2: You know.
26:52
Speaker 6: I thought, boy, this is gonna be weird interviewing people
26:55
Speaker 6: with masks on are people going to be able to
26:57
Speaker 6: understand what they're saying? But it worked, We made it work.
27:00
Speaker 6: I eventually got COVID. I either got this is a
27:03
Speaker 6: weird story. So it was the State of the State,
27:06
Speaker 6: I know, two three years ago and Governor Justice, one
27:10
Speaker 6: of his aides, said, Mark, the governor wants to talk
27:12
Speaker 6: to you. Everybody was lined up to go in the chambers,
27:14
Speaker 6: but the governor's over here and he wants to talk
27:15
Speaker 6: to you. And so I went over and I said, Governor,
27:17
Speaker 6: what can I help you with? He goes, well, I
27:18
Speaker 6: just wanted to check in and find out how your
27:20
Speaker 6: daughter Ali is doing. I know she's in the army.
27:23
Speaker 6: And he and the first lady, that's first question they
27:25
Speaker 6: always ask, and how's Ali? And I saw, I said,
27:29
Speaker 6: briefed him on where she was and what she was doing,
27:31
Speaker 6: and he and I were very close together. I mean
27:33
Speaker 6: we were probably a foot apart from each other. The
27:36
Speaker 6: next Tuesday, I'm not feeling well. I had a regularly
27:38
Speaker 6: scheduled doctor's appointment. I said, doctor, can you test me
27:41
Speaker 6: for COVID and she said, yeah, came back fifteen minutes later,
27:45
Speaker 6: You're positive for COVID. I get in my car and
27:47
Speaker 6: I turn on WCHS radio and Jeff Jenkins Kenson says,
27:52
Speaker 6: we have breaking news. The office of Governor Jim Justice
27:55
Speaker 6: just confirmed he has tested positive for COVID, and so
27:58
Speaker 6: I saw him.
27:59
Speaker 3: In fact, I ran in.
28:00
Speaker 6: I went to the pharmacy to pick up my drugs,
28:02
Speaker 6: and I run into Brian Abraham, his chief of staff,
28:04
Speaker 6: who was getting the medicines for the governor. And then
28:07
Speaker 6: I said to this to him and the governor later
28:09
Speaker 6: in the week, I said, Governor, either you gave me
28:11
Speaker 6: COVID or I gave you COVID. But it was the
28:13
Speaker 6: night of the state of the state. You know, the
28:15
Speaker 6: capital is just a big German factory. Well, these people
28:17
Speaker 6: packed in there, but I survived it. Just talk about
28:21
Speaker 6: your decision to retire. I mean, it's not especially how
28:25
Speaker 6: long total were you in the world of broadcasting. This
28:27
Speaker 6: is my forty eighth year. I started right out of
28:29
Speaker 6: high school dispatching. I hope our good friend Jim Brown
28:32
Speaker 6: is listening to a longtime nine one one dispatcher here
28:35
Speaker 6: in West Virginia. He and are close friends. But I
28:37
Speaker 6: started right out of high school dispatching radio and police
28:40
Speaker 6: and fire calls in a suburb of Milwaukee. And that
28:45
Speaker 6: was my first stint in radio where I got a paycheck.
28:47
Speaker 6: And then not long after that, I transitioned into being
28:51
Speaker 6: a disc jockey on wmu R radio, the one hundred
28:54
Speaker 6: watt voice of Market University. So I've been doing it
28:58
Speaker 6: ever since and and I love it. It's a fun career.
29:03
Speaker 6: I've met a lot of famous people. I've seen a
29:05
Speaker 6: lot of interesting things. I've seen a lot of horrible things.
29:09
Speaker 6: You know, you asked me about the big stories since
29:10
Speaker 6: I was in West Virginia. I was here only six
29:12
Speaker 6: months when the horrible floods happened on the Elk River
29:16
Speaker 6: up in Glendenna and Elkview and of course down to
29:18
Speaker 6: rain Now, and that was where I fell in love
29:22
Speaker 6: with West Virginia. I've told the governor and the Mayor's
29:24
Speaker 6: the story and anybody that will listen. I have never
29:29
Speaker 6: seen people come out of the woodwork to help their neighbors.
29:32
Speaker 6: You know, I've lived in California, Florida, so I've been
29:35
Speaker 6: through earthquakes, wildfires, tornadoes, twenty two hurricanes in my career
29:39
Speaker 6: I've covered and I have never seen number one, the
29:43
Speaker 6: church community, the faith community, and they stay came out
29:45
Speaker 6: of the woodwork. My church, first Presbyterian, Saint Albans said
29:48
Speaker 6: all kinds of work crews up there, and it was
29:51
Speaker 6: neighbor helping neighbor. And I've seen that countless times in
29:54
Speaker 6: West Virginia. That doesn't happen everywhere. Now it is not,
29:57
Speaker 6: and it just uplifted me. And I've met so many people.
30:00
Speaker 6: I was with my dear friend Mike Kelly, the principal
30:02
Speaker 6: of Herbert Hoover High School, yesterday for brunch. You know
30:06
Speaker 6: how I met him through the floods, and we've become
30:09
Speaker 6: very close friends over the last decade. Other people up
30:12
Speaker 6: in the Elk River Valley have become very dear to
30:15
Speaker 6: me because I spent so much time up there covering
30:17
Speaker 6: that and the love of people for their community and
30:20
Speaker 6: their neighbors. And total strangers helping total strangers.
30:23
Speaker 2: Well we do.
30:24
Speaker 6: It was really remarkable. I'll never forget it. And I
30:27
Speaker 6: say that was the June of twenty sixteen was the
30:31
Speaker 6: month I fell in love with West Virginia.
30:33
Speaker 3: When will be your final show Inside Politics? Well, Inside
30:37
Speaker 3: We've taped three, I've got three segments. So this coming
30:40
Speaker 3: weekend we're doing a show. We do this at Christmas
30:42
Speaker 3: and Hanukkah and Easter, Passover Ramadan. We bring on faith
30:46
Speaker 3: leaders in the community. So we have Rabbi Reki's going
30:50
Speaker 3: to be on, Pastor Mark Boyd from my church, Suberazi
30:53
Speaker 3: from the Islamic Association of West Virginia, and also a
30:56
Speaker 3: good friend of mine, timmull Grew, who's an author. Used
30:58
Speaker 3: to be my accountant in San Francis. He retired to
31:01
Speaker 3: West Virginia and he just wrote a really neat book
31:04
Speaker 3: about how to read and interpret the Bible, And so
31:08
Speaker 3: we'll have him on. And then the following week we're
31:11
Speaker 3: doing a report roundtable with a bunch of reporters. We'll
31:14
Speaker 3: be covetching about the top stories of the year and
31:16
Speaker 3: making our predictions for twenty twenty five.
31:19
Speaker 6: And then I have my goodbye tour. It's like the
31:21
Speaker 6: Share Tour, only only we're only going to do it
31:23
Speaker 6: once and it's only going to be thirty minutes long.
31:25
Speaker 6: On January fourth and fifth, I've got three of my
31:28
Speaker 6: dearest friends, four of my dearest friends that I met
31:31
Speaker 6: in West Virginia on the show. They being political analyst
31:35
Speaker 6: Tom Susman, our Secretary of Health, Sherry Young, doctor Sherry
31:39
Speaker 6: Young who is the county Director of Health during COVID,
31:41
Speaker 6: and she and I became very close friends because we
31:43
Speaker 6: had a work so closely together. And former Mayor Danny Jones.
31:47
Speaker 6: And then Rick Johnson, who's our assignment manager, a longtime
31:53
Speaker 6: radio voice in West.
31:54
Speaker 3: Virginia behind this microphone for a lot of years.
31:56
Speaker 6: He's a member of the West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame,
31:59
Speaker 6: something I hope to be elevated to or be honored
32:02
Speaker 6: to be nominated some year. But anyway, they'll be on
32:06
Speaker 6: to talk. And by the way, and I extended this
32:08
Speaker 6: to Hoppy as well, if you ever need me to
32:10
Speaker 6: come on from you know, I'm just a cell phone
32:12
Speaker 6: call away to analyze big political events and an absolute scale,
32:16
Speaker 6: and I'll be seeing a lot of big political things
32:18
Speaker 6: in Florida. You guys ever need me, just call on
32:20
Speaker 6: a phone call away.
32:21
Speaker 3: We will. Mark has been a pleasure working with you.
32:24
Speaker 3: I've been on your show, You've been on mine, and
32:26
Speaker 3: it's been a pleasure working with You're a class act,
32:29
Speaker 3: my friend. And well, I feel like I feel like
32:32
Speaker 3: we're losing a lot when we lose you. But you
32:36
Speaker 3: took that show, which you know, was the old decision
32:38
Speaker 3: Maker show, and you kind of transitioned it into inside
32:41
Speaker 3: West Virginia politics and it's a great place to tune
32:44
Speaker 3: in to and I watch it religiously, you know, every
32:47
Speaker 3: week and again and steal things, you know, put on
32:49
Speaker 3: my show here. That's what we do. And U and
32:52
Speaker 3: I appreciate you. Oh, by the way, you had a
32:54

33:16
Speaker 6: going to say is I love you West Virginia. I
33:18
Speaker 6: love the people of this state. I love the beauty
33:20
Speaker 6: of the state. I will be back often. I won't

36:30
Speaker 3: the return of coach Rod to Morgantown and the Mountaineer
36:34
Speaker 3: Bowl game. So that's what's coming up on the show.
36:39
Speaker 3: We're also going to get into several other things with
36:43
Speaker 3: Hoppy coach Well, including your calls in Texas. He is
36:45
Speaker 3: returned from vacation ten oh six from the Cove Insurance
36:48
Speaker 3: Studios and the Dale Miller Building in Morgantown. What a
36:50
Speaker 3: week or so in the world of sports. We had
36:53
Speaker 3: the Neil Brown firing and replaced, of course by coach
36:57
Speaker 3: Rich Rodrigus. Former coach he was introduced on Friday after
37:00
Speaker 3: leading Marshall to the Sounbolt Conference championship. Charles Huff, bolter
37:03
Speaker 3: for Southern Myths, and her former WVU defensive coordinator. With
37:06
Speaker 3: a few stops along the way Boone County native Tony Gibson,
37:09
Speaker 3: who came here from North Carolina State. He was introduced
37:12
Speaker 3: officially on Thursday in Huntington and then a whole lot
37:15
Speaker 3: of Herd players into the transfer portal, leading to the
37:18
Speaker 3: Saturday afternoon announcement that Marshall would not be playing in
37:21
Speaker 3: the Independence Bowl against Army declining that the invitation simply
37:26
Speaker 3: because they don't have enough players. Jim Workman is with
37:29
Speaker 3: the States premier sports publication, Wally and Whippies. He joins
37:32
Speaker 3: us now, Jim, good morning, Good morning, Dave at shoot
37:35
Speaker 3: the opportunity. Oh, thank you for being here. Seems like
37:39
Speaker 3: years ago when I had you on to talk about
37:40
Speaker 3: the possibility of rich Rod, the possibility of him returning
37:43
Speaker 3: to Morgantown, just a couple of weeks ago. Now he's
37:45
Speaker 3: back for sure. Now we'll get into that a little
37:47
Speaker 3: bit later on. But this situation with the Marshall Bowl Game,
37:51
Speaker 3: it's very, very complicated. The Herd, of course, exceeded expectations
37:55
Speaker 3: this year that won the Sun Belt Championship. They had
37:58
Speaker 3: accepted this invitation to take Army, and then on Saturday
38:03
Speaker 3: news comes out that they're not going because of the
38:08
Speaker 3: amount of players that didn't in the transfer portal. Take
38:10
Speaker 3: it from there.
38:10
Speaker 13: Yeah, well, it's very disappointing for Herd fans. Of course,
38:15
Speaker 13: you know, a lot has happened, A lot has happened.
38:18
Speaker 13: I mean, I think the most disappointing part for the
38:21
Speaker 13: Herd fans is they really did not get to celebrate
38:24
Speaker 13: that Sun Belt championship game victory in the season. I
38:28
Speaker 13: mean immediately afterwards, you know, you hear that huffs leaving
38:32
Speaker 13: and they're hiring a new coach. I mean, they just
38:36
Speaker 13: did not have time to celebrate that. A Bowl game
38:39
Speaker 13: would have given them that opportunity, I think, to really
38:43
Speaker 13: relish in how successful the season was. But I think
38:46
Speaker 13: that's the most disappointing. I did see JJ Roberts tweet
38:50
Speaker 13: out that he was disappointed that he didn't get to
38:53
Speaker 13: finish out one more game in the Kelly Green So
38:57
Speaker 13: things like that very disappointing. But the way things worked out,
39:02
Speaker 13: you know, they probably would not have been competitive in
39:05
Speaker 13: this game.
39:05
Speaker 3: And how many players I've heard different totals of about
39:08
Speaker 3: thirty to thirty one? Is that one on what we're
39:09
Speaker 3: hearing that I've heard as low as twenty five and
39:13
Speaker 3: you know Wes high as in the thirties. Yes, and yeah,
39:17
Speaker 3: none of the quarterbacks the top three quarterbacks. So I
39:21
Speaker 3: joked on the show last week they were checking to
39:22
Speaker 3: see if Red Dawson had any eligibility or theft to
39:24
Speaker 3: try to bring impact. So what about this idea? Jim
39:28
Speaker 3: and several fans have pointed this out. Why not just
39:31
Speaker 3: make it a rule that players cannot enter the transfer
39:34
Speaker 3: portal until after the season is over, and if they're
39:38
Speaker 3: playing in a bowl or whatever. Is Marshall wdu both
39:41
Speaker 3: in bowl games? Why can't we just make that a
39:45
Speaker 3: rule that you cannot transfer out, you cannot enter the
39:48
Speaker 3: portal until your season is complete, you finish, you know,
39:53
Speaker 3: four and eight or whatever, and you're not going to
39:54
Speaker 3: a bowl. Fine, you do it in November or whenever,
39:57
Speaker 3: or December whenever your last game is. But a bowl
39:59
Speaker 3: team just can't do it. I mean, is that is that?
40:01
Speaker 3: Is that all the realm of possibility?
40:03
Speaker 13: I would probably not just s penalizes the players, or
40:08
Speaker 13: I would say, how about you cannot take another job
40:13
Speaker 13: as a coach until after the national championship game, because
40:16
Speaker 13: that's where the dominoes fell.
40:18
Speaker 3: It all started with with with Huff leaving. I mean,
40:20
Speaker 3: that's where that's where these and we you know, colleges
40:24
Speaker 3: use players, they use they lose players of the transfer
40:28
Speaker 3: portal every year, no matter whom the coach is. However,
40:32
Speaker 3: when you know Huff left and all these guys boom
40:34
Speaker 3: boom boom, just one right after another entered the port
40:37
Speaker 3: I mean, something's got to be done here, I would think.
40:39
Speaker 13: And and when we talk about transfer portal too, there
40:42
Speaker 13: are different dates that there's a date and then there's
40:45
Speaker 13: if your coach leaves that date, So you know, immediately
40:50
Speaker 13: those players can decide that they want to enter the
40:53
Speaker 13: transfer portal.
40:54
Speaker 3: And that's that's what happened. I mean, it's happened across
40:58
Speaker 3: the country. Sure, yeah, yeah, this is not unique to Marshall. No,
41:00
Speaker 3: but but this is making national headlines though in the
41:03
Speaker 3: world of sports because the I mean teams turned down
41:08
Speaker 3: bowl opportunities frequently, you know, don't think, well, my team's
41:12
Speaker 3: not good enough, we don't deserve to go, or whatever.
41:14
Speaker 3: But it's never it's not that, not to my knowledge.
41:16
Speaker 3: Maybe it has happened. You follow this a lot more
41:17
Speaker 3: closely than I do. Maybe it has happened before that
41:20
Speaker 3: it became, as Marshall University said Jim, a safety issue
41:24
Speaker 3: because they just simply didn't have enough player. I think
41:26
Speaker 3: the only time it's ever happened like this is the
41:29
Speaker 3: COVID year. Yeah, maybe the year. Well, nothing counts during.
41:32
Speaker 13: A COVID year any right, So as far as accepting
41:35
Speaker 13: an invite to a bowl and then a week or
41:38
Speaker 13: two later, saying sorry, we're not gonna make it. No,
41:41
Speaker 13: I don't, I don't. I believe that's unprecedented, and there's
41:44
Speaker 13: probably gonna be rules in place, or bowls are going
41:49
Speaker 13: to make it to where once you sign on, you
41:52
Speaker 13: have to follow through with it.
41:54
Speaker 3: And how much money is Marshall going to lose? Oh
41:57
Speaker 3: my gosh, I mean, where do you stop? I think
42:01
Speaker 3: just overall they probably would have lost more had they
42:05
Speaker 3: made the trip. Really yeah, I don't know that in
42:09
Speaker 3: these type.
42:10
Speaker 13: Of bowls when you go to Louisiana or Texas and
42:14
Speaker 13: you know, the TV payouts not very big, right.
42:17
Speaker 3: I think the playoff system is kind of want to say,
42:20
Speaker 3: it's kind of ruined it because we all scream for
42:22
Speaker 3: a playoff system and now we have it. Now we've
42:24
Speaker 3: expanded the playoffs, so that's you know that that's kind
42:28
Speaker 3: of downplayed, if you will, some of these some of
42:31
Speaker 3: these lesser bowls. I mean that they're just not the
42:33
Speaker 3: biggest that people are going to be really more interested
42:35
Speaker 3: in the in the in the playoff implications. Where where's
42:39
Speaker 3: the fault, if any or the decision lie in this
42:43
Speaker 3: was it? I mean, obviously you can't blame Tony Gibson.
42:45
Speaker 3: I mean, because he's not even he wasn't going to
42:46
Speaker 3: coach in the bowl game anyway. Is it on the coach?
42:49
Speaker 3: Is it on Christian Spears? Is it on I mean,
42:51
Speaker 3: who made the decision?
42:52
Speaker 13: In your opinion, I'm going to say it's nobody's fault,
42:54
Speaker 13: and it's because of a well, somebody had to make
42:56
Speaker 13: the decision. The article that I read very insightful. It
43:00
Speaker 13: was published by the Athletic and apparently I mean, I'll
43:04
Speaker 13: just go through a couple of notes here that I
43:07
Speaker 13: made because of this. Christian Spears called the situation a
43:10
Speaker 13: win win win situation, which and he says that's rare
43:14
Speaker 13: in college football. And they were headed towards a divorce
43:19
Speaker 13: all year long. There was no extension. He was in
43:22
Speaker 13: his last year of his contract. They when he beat
43:28
Speaker 13: Notre Dame. When Marshall beat Notre Dame, that was coach
43:32
Speaker 13: Huff's opportunity to say I'm a viable candidate for a
43:36
Speaker 13: Power five or Power for So Marshall at that time
43:40
Speaker 13: decided not to extend this contract. They they had talked
43:44
Speaker 13: about it, but they decided not to. But they also
43:47
Speaker 13: put in place and this was revealed in this article
43:49
Speaker 13: last week that if you ever talked to somebody, you
43:52
Speaker 13: have to let us know in writing. So coach Huff,
43:57
Speaker 13: you know, if somebody came, he had to tell Marshall
44:00
Speaker 13: and they and coach Huff says he doesn't feel unsupported
44:05
Speaker 13: by Marshall. So coach Huff interviewed with Purdue in twenty
44:09
Speaker 13: twenty two, the year that they beat Notre Dame, and
44:13
Speaker 13: then the following year he interviewed with Duke in Indiana.
44:16
Speaker 13: He didn't get any of those jobs. So the other
44:20
Speaker 13: people that have contacted Huff this year was Kennesaw State
44:24
Speaker 13: and Temple. Those aren't programs that are above Marshall. I
44:28
Speaker 13: think the best situation coach Huff had was at Marshall,
44:32
Speaker 13: But unfortunately, I think Marshall and other ads across the
44:36
Speaker 13: country don't want coaches who are always looking for their
44:39

47:40

47:41
Speaker 11: Uh.
47:41
Speaker 3: Text says With that said, then coaches should not be
47:44
Speaker 3: fired until after either the regular season is over or
47:47
Speaker 3: if they play in a bowl game. Well, I mean
47:52
Speaker 3: you'd have to decide. Am I going to accept a
47:54
Speaker 3: Bowl invite. Yeah, well, but I mean if the coach
47:56
Speaker 3: is ozero to eight at some point, I mean, just
47:58
Speaker 3: like in the pros, they're gonna they're gonna, you know,
48:00
Speaker 3: eighty six of them and say, you know, you're out
48:02
Speaker 3: of here. What about rich Rod returning to Morgantown. Last
48:05
Speaker 3: I had time, I had you on the show. We
48:06
Speaker 3: were talking about the possibility rich Rod. It's official now.
48:09
Speaker 3: Pat McAfee, who was up there, they were handing out
48:12
Speaker 3: beer at the coliseum. It was a good day to
48:14
Speaker 3: be a Mountaineer. I guess what about your thoughts on
48:16
Speaker 3: rich Rod returning? And as I said earlier the first
48:20
Speaker 3: interview that I had this morning with Justin Napp, I
48:22
Speaker 3: did not realize I wasn't putting two and two together.
48:24
Speaker 3: He played for coach Rodriguez. Oh well, yeah, he played
48:27
Speaker 3: up there during the McAfee years. But go ahead, yeah,
48:30
Speaker 3: go back to late August, right before the regular season.
48:32
Speaker 3: There was a lot of excitement when you know, WVU
48:36
Speaker 3: was had a home opener against Penn State and College
48:40
Speaker 3: Game Day was there.
48:41
Speaker 13: Pat McAfee was there. There was a whole lot of
48:44
Speaker 13: excitement going into the season. And I think that's what
48:48
Speaker 13: they want going forward every home game, they want that
48:52
Speaker 13: type of atmosphere. Pat McAfee had as much to do
48:55
Speaker 13: with this as anybody, because I think any athletic director
48:59
Speaker 13: once their team to be marketable, they want their coaching
49:02
Speaker 13: staff to be stable, stability, just like we were talking
49:06
Speaker 13: about a few minutes ago. They want the ability to
49:08
Speaker 13: create that kind of excitement on game day, and you
49:11
Speaker 13: know they want to be able to fundraise. So when
49:14
Speaker 13: you have Pat McAfee himself going into his pockets and
49:17
Speaker 13: influencing people on the national level, I mean then you've
49:22
Speaker 13: got Country Roads Trust who can now go to people
49:26
Speaker 13: with hey, we are we're a viable option for elite
49:32
Speaker 13: football players to come because we have a path towards
49:36
Speaker 13: the college football playoffs. I think you can say that now,
49:39
Speaker 13: you know what. I love vanilla ice cream as much
49:42
Speaker 13: as anybody. It's one of my favorites. But Neil Brown
49:45
Speaker 13: was Vanilla. He wasn't really marketable. He wasn't able to
49:50
Speaker 13: get the program further down the road. And I think
49:53
Speaker 13: now with everything in place, with all the excitement of
49:56
Speaker 13: the Pat McAfee's, with the Pat Whites, the Owen Schmidt's
50:01
Speaker 13: getting back involved, I think you finally have a plan
50:06
Speaker 13: to change things for a positive and really you know
50:08
Speaker 13: they they're in the top fifteen college football wins of
50:11
Speaker 13: all time. Now you can actually be a top fifteen program.
50:16

50:32
Speaker 3: did a very informal poll on x it was the
50:35
Speaker 3: Fly and he'll talk about this on the show this morning.
50:37
Speaker 3: How do you feel about the hiring of Rich Rodriguez
50:40
Speaker 3: as the next WVU football coach? Here's the results? Sixty
50:43
Speaker 3: percent strongly support, twenty five percent somewhat support, eight percent
50:49
Speaker 3: somewhat oppose, and seven percent strongly opposed. Those numbers and
50:54
Speaker 3: again it's non scientific. Those numbers surprise you or are
50:58
Speaker 3: you where they? You know? Was that what you're hearing?
51:00
Speaker 13: I mean, it's all about timing. You know, three years
51:02
Speaker 13: ago people would not have been excited about this.
51:06
Speaker 3: One thing. I will say.
51:08
Speaker 13: WVU had to hit a home run with this hire,
51:11
Speaker 13: and I believe last week was an inside the park
51:14
Speaker 13: home home run. It's like he hit it to the corner.
51:17
Speaker 13: It was an exciting play. They got it around a
51:19
Speaker 13: home and I think that it counts just the same
51:22
Speaker 13: as if you knocked it out of the stadium. So
51:25
Speaker 13: I think this will be good for WVU, hopefully fingers
51:28
Speaker 13: crossed that. You know rich Rod, you know if you
51:32
Speaker 13: watched his press conference the other day. I mean he
51:35
Speaker 13: said all the right things. If he can just continue
51:38
Speaker 13: doing that, surround himself with people like McAfee and people
51:41
Speaker 13: that can help him, it's gonna be fine.

51:56
Speaker 3: He even handled the heckler, well did you hear the heckler?
51:58
Speaker 3: And he said something to the effect of when somebody
52:01
Speaker 3: heckled him. He said, I think the person said go
52:03
Speaker 3: back to Michigan or something like that, And he said, well,
52:06
Speaker 3: if any other Pitt fans want to lead, now's your
52:08
Speaker 3: opportunity or something of that event.
52:09
Speaker 13: You're always gonna win over a crowd in Morgantown if
52:11
Speaker 13: you say something disparaging about Pitt.
52:14
Speaker 3: All right, Jim Workman, Wally Whimpies, appreciate you being here.
