- 1:12Speaker 3: Beaumani Jones is here in the spaceship again tonight.
- 1:15Speaker 5: Welcome here, everybody, yo, And I have to say that
- 1:19Speaker 5: chuckle whatnominous.
- 1:20Speaker 1: It's just that I've been taking Spanish lessons now for
- 1:22Speaker 1: like two and a half years. Oh okay, I could
- 1:25Speaker 1: commiserate a bit with the prize you feel when you
- 1:28Speaker 1: get a little Spanish, right the onlyss.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, no, I do.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I use a different service, but like now I do
- 1:35Speaker 1: three lessons a week, you know what I'm saying. Though
- 1:37Speaker 1: I fully acknowledge that I am better at speaking Spanish
- 1:43Speaker 1: as storymail whore I blar k at scoop char here
- 1:48Speaker 1: in the Spanish not nearly as good right as we
- 1:53Speaker 1: like i'm talking to somebody that I know I can
- 1:55Speaker 1: understand their Spanish. I don't do a great job if
- 1:58Speaker 1: I'm like trying to listen to music or why the
- 2:00Speaker 1: TV show?
- 2:00Speaker 5: And don't get me started on that bad bunny shit.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I don't know really Like I'll pick out a word
- 2:05Speaker 1: here and there, you know, but I can speak it
- 2:08Speaker 1: pretty well.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, well, being from Brooklyn, I speak Spanish very well.
- 2:15Speaker 4: I understand it pretty flawlessly. But like when like they'll
- 2:19Speaker 4: speak to me in Spanish and I'll respond in English.
- 2:21Speaker 4: And that's why I use duo Because'm trying to knock
- 2:24Speaker 4: out of that.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Well, let me tell you what's offensive to me I
- 2:27Speaker 1: got a homie, a white home. He live up on
- 2:29Speaker 1: like one hundred and forty something street or whatever, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: he is really into Spanish and stuff. So like he
- 2:32Speaker 1: and I like when we text, we text the Spanish,
- 2:35Speaker 1: we you know, helped shopen each other up. His wife
- 2:36Speaker 1: of Venezuela. So he you know, he can do it
- 2:38Speaker 1: at the castle, right, but we'll go places and we would,
- 2:42Speaker 1: you know, just to do the whole thing. We'd go
- 2:44Speaker 1: somewhere you know, some Spanish is too broad, but you know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: but some some Latin tinge restaurant where they go, right,
- 2:52Speaker 1: So we go on to the Bronx. So we going
- 2:54Speaker 1: to inn Wood, like we doing it for real, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: East Haultam, you know, somewhere over there, and it'd be
- 2:59Speaker 1: so offensive because its white ass. Get in there and
- 3:00Speaker 1: start speaking Spanish. They speak Spanish to him right back.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I try to speak Spanish, they'd be like that'll be
- 3:05Speaker 1: three fifty yeah, and I don't understand, like obviously I'm trying.
- 3:10Speaker 5: To do this.
- 3:11Speaker 4: It's it's it's the plight of the Afro Latino. Like
- 3:14Speaker 4: it's like, oh, you're black, you can't possibly speak this right.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Right, Like like are you offended?
- 3:18Speaker 1: And I'm trying to meet you where you at, Like
- 3:20Speaker 1: I don't really I don't really, I don't know.
- 3:23Speaker 5: I don't get black. I don't black. Yeah, I was
- 3:25Speaker 5: about seeing that's you know, like I don't.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I try not to get into their shit, right, Like
- 3:29Speaker 1: I don't really fully understand what the world is, but
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm trying to get a little practice. And they out
- 3:34Speaker 1: here like nah three fifty.
- 3:38Speaker 5: All right, then you got it?
- 3:41Speaker 4: Oh man, that's great. Yes, welcome to this spaceship. But
- 3:45Speaker 4: MANI you've been well clearly you and Ben have known
- 3:47Speaker 4: each other for like the longest time, but you've also
- 3:49Speaker 4: been supportive of for ow nerds podcasts for almost since
- 3:52Speaker 4: the inception, and you've always been around.
- 3:54Speaker 2: You've always like make sure that we needed what we needed,
- 3:58Speaker 2: we got what we got.
- 3:59Speaker 4: You understand, like you and I just want to just
- 4:01Speaker 4: first just say my appreciations to that, no problem, yeah
- 4:05Speaker 4: for real, And then also like you know, as we continue,
- 4:08Speaker 4: as we continue that as we've grown, we watch you grow,
- 4:10Speaker 4: We watch you get all of your accolades and your
- 4:13Speaker 4: different opportunities, and you know, when you look at your
- 4:17Speaker 4: growth and maybe even also our growth, but when you
- 4:20Speaker 4: look at your growth, do you also.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Think like, damn, I'm good. But do you think damn
- 4:25Speaker 2: I got so far to go?
- 4:27Speaker 5: No?
- 4:27Speaker 1: I mean, I would say on the so far to
- 4:30Speaker 1: go part, I don't think that I am.
- 4:33Speaker 2: The last emmy will say Otherwise, I.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Always say, though I got that Ivy, I didn't exactly
- 4:39Speaker 1: win it.
- 4:39Speaker 6: That's a lost story.
- 4:40Speaker 7: But no.
- 4:41Speaker 1: But the thing for me is I've really checked all
- 4:45Speaker 1: the boxes of the things that I wanted to do.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Like the last couple of years for me have been
- 4:51Speaker 1: like i'll call it three years. It's been a little
- 4:53Speaker 1: bit of a challenge because after I did the show
- 4:54Speaker 1: for HBO, I was like, okay, Like that's the dream job.
- 4:57Speaker 1: That was the thing that I always wanted to do.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I had done that, and I'd say I had a
- 5:03Speaker 1: couple of years that were just I wouldn't say going
- 5:07Speaker 1: through the motions. I don't think that's fair. But I
- 5:09Speaker 1: wasn't My heart wasn't quite into it as it had
- 5:12Speaker 1: been in previous times because everything that I was doing,
- 5:14Speaker 1: it wasn't really a challenge. Like I had a new
- 5:17Speaker 1: producer on my podcast now he's been working on it
- 5:20Speaker 1: now for me probably about shit, I guess about six
- 5:23Speaker 1: months now and we have a real strong chemistry that
- 5:25Speaker 1: has kind of like excited me a little more. And
- 5:28Speaker 1: I realized that, you know, this podcast used to be
- 5:31Speaker 1: a second job. Now it's my main job. So it
- 5:35Speaker 1: had been injured. It had been built to work around
- 5:37Speaker 1: the schedule, but now it was the schedule.
- 5:39Speaker 6: So it's like, so why don't you do four days
- 5:40Speaker 6: a week now instead of three?
- 5:42Speaker 5: And now like.
- 5:42Speaker 1: There's a been Like I have more energy toward those
- 5:45Speaker 1: sorts of things, but like the hard part for me,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I got two things that I definitely want to.
- 5:49Speaker 6: Do now that are like the next level of it.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Like I feel like I beat the game, but now
- 5:53Speaker 1: we're in like bonus stages. Right at some point, I
- 5:56Speaker 1: got to get a book done and I would like
- 5:57Speaker 1: to direct a documentary at some point, Like I have
- 5:59Speaker 1: the conversations with the people that I pay about doing
- 6:02Speaker 1: those things, and I'm in a position that if I
- 6:04Speaker 1: get to just get the discipline locked in that I
- 6:06Speaker 1: can go.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Ahead and do it.
- 6:07Speaker 1: But I did, like I really looked back about three
- 6:10Speaker 1: years ago and I was like, look, man forty one,
- 6:12Speaker 1: forty two years old, and I did everything that I
- 6:13Speaker 1: wanted to do in this and it's like Okay, now
- 6:16Speaker 1: how do you keep this going? What do you do next?
- 6:19Speaker 1: And so I don't think I'll I think early in
- 6:23Speaker 1: my career I really looked at the things I did,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and I skipped a lot of steps, and I was
- 6:27Speaker 1: ahead of the game early, and I was like, wow,
- 6:28Speaker 1: it was kind of crazy that I've gotten here. Then
- 6:30Speaker 1: I realized how hard it was to really keep you know,
- 6:32Speaker 1: keep things going. And so I can look back and say, man,
- 6:36Speaker 1: I've done a whole lot of things, and then I
- 6:39Speaker 1: can look around and it's so many people that have
- 6:41Speaker 1: done so many more things, you know what I mean, Like,
- 6:44Speaker 1: I just like I just get to a place where
- 6:45Speaker 1: it's it's it's less self congratulatory than it is. I
- 6:50Speaker 1: know the parts of this that were hard, and I
- 6:53Speaker 1: know the parts that other people wouldn't necessarily be able
- 6:56Speaker 1: to look at and realize how challenging some of those
- 6:58Speaker 1: things may have been.
- 7:00Speaker 6: But I know right like, I know what.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I had to do to get it to where it is,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and I am happy that I've been able to inspite
- 7:06Speaker 1: of some hiccups.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Man, it ain't all been a straight line, you know,
- 7:09Speaker 5: And so.
- 7:10Speaker 1: The ability to get back up has always been for
- 7:13Speaker 1: me more important, I think than anything else.
- 7:16Speaker 3: That's very well said, because I know, like I just
- 7:18Speaker 3: had a birthday and I've been you know, reflecting on
- 7:21Speaker 3: my life and things I've done, and people on the
- 7:25Speaker 3: outside looking in at me are always like, oh, you've
- 7:27Speaker 3: done all this different stuff, and I'm always like, you know,
- 7:30Speaker 3: there's a lot more things that I want to do.
- 7:32Speaker 3: But then when I was very reflecting on everything that
- 7:34Speaker 3: I have done, I might well, I have done a
- 7:36Speaker 3: lot of different things, and more so, I just like
- 7:40Speaker 3: being a good person, Like I think that that's really
- 7:43Speaker 3: something that I've been happy to realize that I have
- 7:47Speaker 3: been at that in life.
- 7:48Speaker 5: And I think you are the same Bomini.
- 7:49Speaker 3: You know, like we've known each other, like Toddianna said,
- 7:53Speaker 3: shit going on I don't know ten plus now, like
- 7:56Speaker 3: yeah we in the decades, Yeah yeah, since combat Jack everything,
- 8:00Speaker 3: and you've always been a straight up dude, you know,
- 8:03Speaker 3: Houston everything, and so you know, thank you for being
- 8:06Speaker 3: here again. And that's really just well said what you said.
- 8:08Speaker 3: So thank you for saying that as well.
- 8:10Speaker 5: No, I appreciate it.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And it's like it's funny because you mentioned a thing
- 8:12Speaker 1: with combat Jack and he used to listen to the
- 8:16Speaker 1: show that I used to record for Serious. It's back
- 8:18Speaker 1: in like twenty ten, twenty eleven, and I didn't have
- 8:22Speaker 1: like the full magnitude of who he was, but like
- 8:25Speaker 1: he had a cool name. I looked it up, like
- 8:26Speaker 1: I knew with the lawyer stuff or whatever. And he
- 8:29Speaker 1: started listening to the show because he had serious because
- 8:31Speaker 1: he's a Howard Sharon dude. Because he that kind of
- 8:32Speaker 1: New York right right. He was a Howard Starran dude.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And I don't think people understand for somebody to turn
- 8:38Speaker 1: off Howard Stern to come check you out, even for
- 8:39Speaker 1: twenty minutes on your show, like it's a real big deal.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And so I think about like when I used to
- 8:44Speaker 1: go on his show and I sit there and periodic
- 8:47Speaker 1: every time i'd come.
- 8:47Speaker 6: On, I come on once a year, and he'd be like, so,
- 8:51Speaker 6: how's the money.
- 8:53Speaker 1: And it was interesting because it was at that time
- 8:55Speaker 1: when it was climbing, right, and I actually appreciated it
- 8:59Speaker 1: because I didn't have nobody to really talk to about
- 9:02Speaker 1: the fact this like significantly changing part of my life
- 9:05Speaker 1: or whatever it was.
- 9:06Speaker 5: It was a build. I wouldn't necessarily give a number.
- 9:08Speaker 1: But it was kind of like, oh yeah, like going
- 9:11Speaker 1: on that show was kind of like getting your hype.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Marked on the wall just a little bit. But then
- 9:16Speaker 5: you get to a point and after.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You've been doing this for a long time, like I've
- 9:19Speaker 1: been doing the job overall for over twenty five years, right,
- 9:23Speaker 1: Like the first time I did the first time I
- 9:26Speaker 1: ever was on television was twenty years ago. The first
- 9:28Speaker 1: time that I did Around the Horn was over fifteen
- 9:30Speaker 1: years ago.
- 9:31Speaker 5: After a while, man, people stopped being happy for.
- 9:33Speaker 1: You about this shit, Like there's no longer You're no
- 9:35Speaker 1: longer a countercultural figure, right like those I got the
- 9:38Speaker 1: day one people that knew how crazy it was the
- 9:41Speaker 1: first time that I got on right that, like I
- 9:44Speaker 1: was I went on ESPN, and I was doing the
- 9:46Speaker 1: exact same things that I was doing off of ESPN.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Was it was for those For the people who came
- 9:53Speaker 1: around late, they don't know that, but at the time
- 9:55Speaker 1: it was kind of insane, the experiment that I was
- 9:58Speaker 1: trying to run, and I pulled it on off and
- 10:00Speaker 1: I got.
- 10:00Speaker 5: To the places I was going.
- 10:01Speaker 1: But then if you're a certain age, I've been there
- 10:03Speaker 1: as long as you can remember. I'm the establishment, right,
- 10:07Speaker 1: And so then you'd reach a place and I think
- 10:09Speaker 1: it's been the hardest thing for me is to learn like,
- 10:11Speaker 1: hey man, you are going to become as long as
- 10:17Speaker 1: you are on the machine, no matter how no matter
- 10:19Speaker 1: how revolutionary you feel like what you're doing is or
- 10:21Speaker 1: how different it is than everything else, somebody just gonna
- 10:24Speaker 1: see you as being the person that's on the machine. Right,
- 10:26Speaker 1: Like I look up at stuff that say about me,
- 10:29Speaker 1: and it's just like, oh, okay, I forgot. You have
- 10:31Speaker 1: no idea you weren't here. You know, you were not
- 10:34Speaker 1: here from the beginning. You just look at me. I've
- 10:37Speaker 1: always just been the dude on television to you, as
- 10:39Speaker 1: opposed to people who have known me for long enough
- 10:41Speaker 1: to be like, yo, I remember him from when, right,
- 10:44Speaker 1: like I remember.
- 10:45Speaker 5: What he was doing before.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And so that's what happens when you get older in
- 10:48Speaker 1: this game, is that you just kind of look around
- 10:49Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, you're the old man.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Now. You can try to fight at all you want, but.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Don't little They still go thank you the old man,
- 10:56Speaker 1: you know, and you can't get mad about.
- 10:57Speaker 5: It because this is just this is how things go.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Then one day they get older and they look at
- 11:01Speaker 1: you and they like, damn, okay, damn.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I give you think you care if people are happy
- 11:05Speaker 2: for you anymore?
- 11:06Speaker 5: At this point, I.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Think there are still people who are happy for me, certainly, right, Yeah,
- 11:11Speaker 1: But I also think that when you're on air or
- 11:15Speaker 1: doing a podcast or whatever it is, especially because the
- 11:18Speaker 1: stuff I've done.
- 11:18Speaker 6: Is largely been daily, it's a relationship.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And as with any relationship, everybody grows in different directions.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And so there are people who start off and they
- 11:31Speaker 1: listen to you or they watch you, and they like you,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and the reason is because they agree with you all
- 11:35Speaker 1: the time. Well, then as things go and you get
- 11:38Speaker 1: a little older and things change, y'all ain't necessarily going
- 11:41Speaker 1: to agree as much.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Right.
- 11:42Speaker 1: And then, on top of the fact that y'all aren't
- 11:44Speaker 1: necessarily going to agree as much, somebody been listening to
- 11:48Speaker 1: everything you say. Now they know everything you say, they
- 11:51Speaker 1: like Damn how many times you gon tell that story?
- 11:54Speaker 1: Every time I can. It's funny to me. Now it's
- 11:57Speaker 1: funny to me then whatever it was the same way
- 12:00Speaker 1: this happens in your own life, where you start finishing
- 12:03Speaker 1: each other sentences and everything else, and you get a
- 12:05Speaker 1: little bit tired of each other, and maybe it ain't
- 12:07Speaker 1: the same as it used to be. It's the same
- 12:09Speaker 1: way with the audiences that you have. Like I realized
- 12:12Speaker 1: that I was the fight that I don't know if
- 12:15Speaker 1: it's the right way to put it, but in the
- 12:16Speaker 1: last couple of years, I realized what I was really
- 12:18Speaker 1: trying to do. Most of these people out here trying
- 12:21Speaker 1: to figure out how to get new people. I'm trying
- 12:22Speaker 1: to hold on to the people I got right Like
- 12:25Speaker 1: It's like it's again like a relationship. I'm trying to
- 12:27Speaker 1: keep the woman that I got in my house.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Right.
- 12:30Speaker 1: These people here were growing in different directions. We're going
- 12:33Speaker 1: in different places, like all this stuff, and then the
- 12:35Speaker 1: Internet has broken so many people's brains. They ain't even
- 12:39Speaker 1: the same people that they used to be. And all
- 12:41Speaker 1: you can do after a point is you have to
- 12:43Speaker 1: be satisfied with the quality of work that you're doing
- 12:46Speaker 1: and that you're staying true to who you are.
- 12:48Speaker 6: And what your purpose always was.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Because for me at this point in my career, I
- 12:53Speaker 1: am trying to serve the people that have been with
- 12:55Speaker 1: me from the beginning. You know, I've made enough money
- 12:59Speaker 1: to where I can do that, right, I don't have
- 13:00Speaker 1: to go chase this other stuff. So I'm trying to
- 13:03Speaker 1: serve the people that remember from way back when, right
- 13:06Speaker 1: who know what this was? Who know who know what
- 13:09Speaker 1: I had to go through and what I did in
- 13:11Speaker 1: order to get here. I can't be how you even
- 13:14Speaker 1: gonna get new people, Like I don't even know how
- 13:16Speaker 1: people get new listeners and new consumers or anything else.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I think we all, if you were smart, we all
- 13:20Speaker 1: trying to hold on the people that we had, and
- 13:22Speaker 1: the only way you can do that is via sincerity.
- 13:25Speaker 3: And I think sincerity brings you new people though as well,
- 13:28Speaker 3: cause that's what like I've been learning recently, because like
- 13:31Speaker 3: you say, I've been doing.
- 13:32Speaker 5: The whole thing.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Oh are you you know older in this space? Look
- 13:36Speaker 3: at it like the unk et cetera.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:38Speaker 3: But what I've also been realizing lately, especially in the
- 13:41Speaker 3: geek nerd space, is there's a lot of cheap turn
- 13:44Speaker 3: i'd say stupid, I'll say uneducated.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I'll say uneducated.
- 13:49Speaker 3: There's a lot of uneducated people, and there's a lot
- 13:52Speaker 3: of loud uneducated people. And so what I've realized that
- 13:55Speaker 3: is the more the louder I get, the more.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Attention I get.
- 14:00Speaker 3: And it really doesn't matter age because there's a lot
- 14:03Speaker 3: of this, you know. Like I said, there's a lot
- 14:05Speaker 3: of old dumb people, young dumb people, young uneducated, so.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Everyone needs this type of information. Yeah, well, I think
- 14:13Speaker 1: and I want to for me in terms of picking
- 14:16Speaker 1: up new people. This is what I mean. Every day
- 14:21Speaker 1: somebody's got a bright idea.
- 14:26Speaker 5: I'm gonna start a podcast. Right, every day somebody.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Is like, I know a couple of rappers and I
- 14:36Speaker 1: got a studio, or they like I know a couple
- 14:39Speaker 1: of ball players, or I know a ball player.
- 14:43Speaker 6: And this white boy.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Right, Like, everybody's got this same bright ass idea that
- 14:48Speaker 1: we are going to start a podcast. I've been doing
- 14:52Speaker 1: podcast for sixteen years and various far as capacities right,
- 14:55Speaker 1: actually longer than that. But everybody's got that same idea,
- 14:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna start a podcast.
- 15:00Speaker 5: Okay.
- 15:01Speaker 1: What has not changed is the day still only has
- 15:06Speaker 1: twenty four hours. Right, every day more options are coming around,
- 15:11Speaker 1: the day still only has twenty four hours, and so
- 15:15Speaker 1: in order for people to find space for new stuff,
- 15:18Speaker 1: they're gonna have to kick something else out in.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Some form of fashion in order to get there.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Like, there's such a glut and there's a prioritization for
- 15:26Speaker 1: these algorithms. They don't care how intently you listen. They
- 15:29Speaker 1: just care if you keep pressing play. And so the
- 15:32Speaker 1: game incentivizes people to put up like especially with podcasts
- 15:35Speaker 1: these like in YouTube, like it's three hour long podcast,
- 15:38Speaker 1: not so much so you can necessarily listen to them,
- 15:40Speaker 1: but just so it'll play right like on the Spotify
- 15:43Speaker 1: space that you see a whole lot more AI music,
- 15:45Speaker 1: because the game is trying to get you on a
- 15:47Speaker 1: sleep podcast because then it just plays and plays. They
- 15:49Speaker 1: don't care if you listen. They only care if you play.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And I am trying to provide something that's a little
- 15:54Speaker 1: bit more in depth for my people. So I'm just
- 15:56Speaker 1: trying to hold on. Like, hey, if I can hold
- 15:59Speaker 1: on to you, I will be just fine. You all
- 16:01Speaker 1: have held me down, and I've been able to make
- 16:04Speaker 1: a living with the relationship that we've had for all
- 16:06Speaker 1: these years. Right That's where I'm like, I can find
- 16:10Speaker 1: new people through the sincerity. But think about what it
- 16:13Speaker 1: takes for a new person at this point in their
- 16:15Speaker 1: lives to make you a part of their habit. It's tough, man, Like,
- 16:19Speaker 1: we're really all fighting up here in that way. But
- 16:21Speaker 1: I agree with you the sincerity. Especially in this day
- 16:25Speaker 1: and time, man, people people are clamoring for something real
- 16:28Speaker 1: because what we're giving them so often is the opposite.
- 16:33Speaker 3: All right, Well, on that note, this is something I
- 16:35Speaker 3: wanted to ask about anyway, How like do you given,
- 16:41Speaker 3: like you said, the state of the world today? I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 3: I know the state of the world is always pretty
- 16:45Speaker 3: much insane, but it seems to be, you know, in
- 16:49Speaker 3: the words of the wire, getting more fiercer. Yes, So
- 16:54Speaker 3: how do you still talk about things like basketball, etc.
- 16:57Speaker 5: When the damaged any more? Fear every day? Yo? It's
- 17:01Speaker 5: so interesting that you asked that, because.
- 17:06Speaker 1: A lot of my approach changed in twenty sixteen, And
- 17:12Speaker 1: it wasn't when Trump won the election.
- 17:14Speaker 6: It was when Trump won the primary.
- 17:19Speaker 1: And the reason was I always felt like, like I
- 17:23Speaker 1: always say, I'm not in the business to say in
- 17:25Speaker 1: obvious things, and so I felt as though a lot
- 17:29Speaker 1: of the things that were talking about that I was
- 17:31Speaker 1: talking about in front of the larger world, specifically about race,
- 17:34Speaker 1: that I was really putting people very often on too,
- 17:37Speaker 1: like game and stuff that they wouldn't have otherwise, that
- 17:41Speaker 1: there were things that they were not understanding about how
- 17:43Speaker 1: things worked. And I felt like I was helping them
- 17:46Speaker 1: make connections that perhaps they weren't making otherwise. And then
- 17:51Speaker 1: Trump won the primary and I was like, okay, well,
- 17:53Speaker 1: all there's left to say is obvious things like there's
- 17:56Speaker 1: nothing that you there's nothing you need me to help
- 17:58Speaker 1: to help you understand at.
- 18:00Speaker 5: This point, it's there.
- 18:03Speaker 1: And I was also working at ESPN at the time,
- 18:06Speaker 1: and I thought that I never had a problem with there,
- 18:08Speaker 1: be careful on your politics while you work here sort
- 18:10Speaker 1: of thing.
- 18:10Speaker 6: Right, if you look at what Steven A.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Smith is going through right now, you understand why they
- 18:14Speaker 1: felt that way. Like they like people looking at you
- 18:17Speaker 1: and they get mad at.
- 18:17Speaker 5: Some shit you said on somewhere else.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Right, you're gonna mess up all money all like like
- 18:22Speaker 1: we don't even we don't like you don't even go
- 18:23Speaker 1: to that school, right, Like I understood what their outlook was.
- 18:27Speaker 1: But for now, I don't have a problem talking about
- 18:30Speaker 1: those kinds of things because I think those kinds of
- 18:33Speaker 1: things still matter, Like basketball is a thing that people
- 18:35Speaker 1: still care about. Basketball is a thing that still matters.
- 18:38Speaker 1: There will be elements that come up, and I will
- 18:40Speaker 1: find ways to talk.
- 18:43Speaker 5: About the larger issues at play.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But I'm not one of those people like Ben me
- 18:48Speaker 1: and you were at a birthday party a few months
- 18:50Speaker 1: ago when a man felt like he had to stop
- 18:52Speaker 1: his fiftieth birthday party because he needed to talk about
- 18:55Speaker 1: I forget what terrible thing was going on in the
- 18:57Speaker 1: world at the time, maybe it was Palestine or whatever
- 18:59Speaker 1: it was, Like, I would be remiss if.
- 19:01Speaker 5: I didn't talk about this.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I'm like Potney, you ain't got to talk about this
- 19:03Speaker 1: right now, man, it's midnight. We at your crib and
- 19:06Speaker 1: his music, like, like, you.
- 19:08Speaker 5: Don't have to.
- 19:09Speaker 1: You're not obligated every moment, you know, to do these things.
- 19:14Speaker 1: And so for me, so for me, there's a role.
- 19:17Speaker 1: There's there's nothing wrong with having a good time in
- 19:20Speaker 1: the midst of these other things that are happening. And
- 19:22Speaker 1: I'm not just gonna like patently ignore that other stuff
- 19:25Speaker 1: or act like it doesn't matter and chastise anybody that
- 19:28Speaker 1: wants to use their platform specifically to talk about those things.
- 19:31Speaker 6: But now there's still room for basketball in this m.
- 19:35Speaker 5: And Stephen A. Smith, Oh god man, he got y'all hot. Boy, Man,
- 19:44Speaker 5: I don't look he doesn't even have me hot, like
- 19:46Speaker 5: because I don't.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I like, I don't know what he's talking about most time,
- 19:51Speaker 3: I'm not, you know, like you.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Know how aggravating, Like I don't like aggravating figures.
- 19:56Speaker 3: I don't watch He's on ESPN still right, Like that's
- 19:59Speaker 3: what I'm I don't watch ESPN, you know what I mean?
- 20:01Speaker 5: Straight down, bro, like.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Around the horn and went down and you know, I
- 20:07Speaker 3: know PTR is still there, but it's like, you know,
- 20:09Speaker 3: I just after around the Horn, I was done and
- 20:12Speaker 3: I became a like And I wanted to ask you
- 20:15Speaker 3: about that, in fact, because I used to be the
- 20:18Speaker 3: person who would turn on ESPN in the.
- 20:20Speaker 5: Morning and all day long, yes like or not.
- 20:24Speaker 3: And then for a minute I switched for I started
- 20:26Speaker 3: with Shannon and Stip and then and I even found
- 20:31Speaker 3: out who What's I never knew who dude was before that.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Who came on right after? Uh yeah, smarmy white boy.
- 20:38Speaker 3: I like him, you know, because I like a smarmy
- 20:40Speaker 3: white boy.
- 20:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:41Speaker 3: So I've watched Colin for three hours. You know, you
- 20:43Speaker 3: got a great voice, great background.
- 20:45Speaker 5: No before I work.
- 20:46Speaker 3: But then Cam and Mace came out, and I'm a
- 20:49Speaker 3: Cameron of Mace fan, so I started watching them, and
- 20:52Speaker 3: so I watched them and then it was like I
- 20:54Speaker 3: don't go back to ESPN anymore after that, And so
- 20:56Speaker 3: I wanted to know, how do you feel about like
- 20:59Speaker 3: the changing of the guard or how it's this new
- 21:02Speaker 3: era of pretty much anybody talking sports and moving.
- 21:07Speaker 5: Away from the stephen A. Smith for the world.
- 21:10Speaker 1: So it's interesting because it's also moving away from the
- 21:13Speaker 1: Beaumont and Jones.
- 21:14Speaker 2: But you're also the old guard.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I hear you, I mean, but at the same time,
- 21:21Speaker 1: for me, it kind of depends on who we're talking about.
- 21:24Speaker 1: So Cam and Mays, for example, Yeah, I think they
- 21:27Speaker 1: are excellent, right, Like I consume them more in bites.
- 21:32Speaker 6: But I truly believe that what they are doing is good.
- 21:37Speaker 1: It is it's also satire, right, Like I appreciate the
- 21:42Speaker 1: fact that they still get in the suits and they're
- 21:44Speaker 1: still sitting at the Sports Center type of set, right,
- 21:49Speaker 1: and everything they talk about they are dead ass serious
- 21:52Speaker 1: about it. I think that's the underrated part of it too,
- 21:55Speaker 1: Like what they're saying they mean when they're up there.
- 21:59Speaker 1: But like also think what they typically talk about I
- 22:02Speaker 1: have to say is you know, like you know, be
- 22:05Speaker 1: a little too old for the Paul's thing, right, Yeah, Like,
- 22:07Speaker 1: but also when they say stuff it's like, nah, man,
- 22:11Speaker 1: Actually they'll think, we gotta think you got a point here,
- 22:14Speaker 1: like there's there's something to this, But it's a bit humbling.
- 22:20Speaker 1: I'm not necessarily talking about them because I think there
- 22:23Speaker 1: their whole thing is kind of all over the place.
- 22:25Speaker 1: But there are certain people who talk about sports that
- 22:29Speaker 1: it's a little humbling to be like, oh, so more
- 22:31Speaker 1: people would rather listen to these people talk about sports
- 22:34Speaker 1: who don't necessarily know that much about it, then they
- 22:36Speaker 1: would listen to me. It is tricky that the athletes
- 22:43Speaker 1: entering the space is interesting, right, So they're different, like
- 22:45Speaker 1: different sets of people. So like Ryan Clark, for example,
- 22:47Speaker 1: who I think is excellent on television and is put
- 22:50Speaker 1: together something really excellent on you know, with the Pivot
- 22:52Speaker 1: and what.
- 22:52Speaker 6: He does with those guys.
- 22:54Speaker 1: A lot of these guys have gotten really good at this,
- 22:56Speaker 1: But what they've really locked down is the interview space.
- 23:00Speaker 1: The Internet loves famous people talking to each other, like
- 23:05Speaker 1: they really get off on that, and there's kind of
- 23:08Speaker 1: a game recognized game among players where guys that I
- 23:12Speaker 1: never would have been able to land.
- 23:13Speaker 7: Like.
- 23:13Speaker 1: The reason my shows have never really been based on
- 23:15Speaker 1: interviews with athletes is back in the day, I could
- 23:17Speaker 1: never get them, and so it was just like, why
- 23:20Speaker 1: even try, Like, I can do this another way, but
- 23:22Speaker 1: I can never land those guys.
- 23:23Speaker 6: They're all talking to each other right now.
- 23:26Speaker 1: I think at this point of the game, because I've
- 23:28Speaker 1: been doing it for so long, if I wanted to
- 23:30Speaker 1: do more sit down interviews, I could probably book those people.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I'm accustomed to not doing that, But they've wrecked the
- 23:37Speaker 1: interview game completely because they can all go just talk
- 23:40Speaker 1: to each other and you're never going to get a
- 23:41Speaker 1: hard question, or at the very least, you're not gonna
- 23:43Speaker 1: get an uncomfortable question. And if you get an uncomfortable question,
- 23:46Speaker 1: your boy is probably gonna cut it out for you, cause, again,
- 23:50Speaker 1: a game, it's a game recognized game sort of situation.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I'm not judging them for the fact that it's the case,
- 23:54Speaker 1: but I am saying, we're competing against people who are
- 23:59Speaker 1: capable of doing some things that some of us can't
- 24:03Speaker 1: really do. Right, So all I can do is the
- 24:06Speaker 1: best I can for the audience that I already have, Right,
- 24:11Speaker 1: But I'm.
- 24:11Speaker 6: Never gonna put up the numbers Gilbert Ritaz does. And
- 24:13Speaker 6: by the way, I like Gilbert Show. I like Gilbert
- 24:15Speaker 6: a lot. I've been on there a few.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Times, Like, and the guys I'm talking about Cam and
- 24:18Speaker 1: Mace I had I mean Cam, I had him on
- 24:19Speaker 1: Game Theory. Gilbert, I had him on Game Theory, right.
- 24:22Speaker 1: So I'm not hating on these cats at all. I
- 24:25Speaker 1: have used platforms. I've had to elevate a lot of
- 24:28Speaker 1: these dudes no in their shows, right, But no, it's different,
- 24:33Speaker 1: like we're in.
- 24:33Speaker 5: Competition with guys.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Who didn't do this for a living, but they've got
- 24:38Speaker 1: the maybe the most important currency that you need in
- 24:41Speaker 1: the game right now, which is fame.
- 24:43Speaker 4: M Yeah, and that's that's close to pretty much the
- 24:47Speaker 4: answer I was gonna he was probably gonna give when
- 24:49Speaker 4: I was gonna ask, like, what is the background really
- 24:51Speaker 4: needed to be successful in this space?
- 24:53Speaker 2: And right now doesn't seem like no background be size.
- 24:57Speaker 1: So I'll get nerdy on this because yeah, I know
- 24:59Speaker 1: where I'm at. I don't know if you've ever heard
- 25:01Speaker 1: of a gentleman named Neil Postman. He was an education professor.
- 25:04Speaker 1: He died twenty three years ago, but he wrote a
- 25:06Speaker 1: book called A Music Ourselves to Death that I highly
- 25:09Speaker 1: recommend anybody read. And all the Postman's books get back
- 25:12Speaker 1: to the same thing, which was that television was going
- 25:14Speaker 1: to ruin US as a society. But all his arguments
- 25:18Speaker 1: about what television was doing to society, the internet applied
- 25:22Speaker 1: to doubly. Like the Internet is basically television, right, it's
- 25:27Speaker 1: a different medium, but like you think about it, something
- 25:29Speaker 1: that streaming is not really television, but we call it television, right,
- 25:32Speaker 1: Like the Internet is just television on steroids.
- 25:34Speaker 6: But he made a point that.
- 25:36Speaker 1: The point with him about television was and the way
- 25:38Speaker 1: this all worked that it cut down on the amount
- 25:41Speaker 1: of gatekeeping, both in terms of what was transmitted, but
- 25:46Speaker 1: also in terms of like who how much got out there,
- 25:52Speaker 1: and who got to put the stuff out there, and
- 25:54Speaker 1: the difficulty people would then have themselves with sifting through
- 25:57Speaker 1: all the things.
- 25:58Speaker 5: And he said that we would wind.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Being so overloaded by content that it would reach a
- 26:05Speaker 1: point where it would become a prerequisite that to run
- 26:09Speaker 1: for president you would need to have some pre existing
- 26:12Speaker 1: level of fame in order for people to know who
- 26:16Speaker 1: you were, right, because otherwise, like that was the thing
- 26:19Speaker 1: Donald Trump had the advantage of in twenty sixteen. And
- 26:21Speaker 1: why Steven A. Smith thinks he can run for president now?
- 26:24Speaker 1: Is you skipped straight past the well who's that person?
- 26:28Speaker 5: Question? Right?
- 26:30Speaker 1: So think about this twenty sixteen and even though even
- 26:32Speaker 1: though she is a politician, right, Hillary Clinton and Donald
- 26:35Speaker 1: Trump people, everybody was already very familiar with twenty twenty,
- 26:40Speaker 1: Joe Biden and Donald Trump. People were already very familiar
- 26:45Speaker 1: with Kamala Harrison Donald Trump. Again who people were already
- 26:49Speaker 1: familiar with that Nobody had to say, hey, tell me more,
- 26:52Speaker 1: who's that? Like in nineteen ninety two, we didn't really
- 26:54Speaker 1: know who most of us didn't know who Bill Clinton was. Right,
- 26:57Speaker 1: three straight elections, everybody's already known who who the person was.
- 27:01Speaker 1: And so that's the thing in this day and age
- 27:03Speaker 1: that I think people have so much that's already out
- 27:05Speaker 1: there and so much to try to sift through. Something
- 27:08Speaker 1: that's familiar is a great landing spot. And then it
- 27:11Speaker 1: goes from there, like fame begets more fame. It's like
- 27:13Speaker 1: famous like money. You can take money to get money.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Now you got to be famous to get famous.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Fuck, not that I want to be famous, but yeah, no.
- 27:25Speaker 1: That's a it's a it's a distressing sort of thing
- 27:28Speaker 1: in a lot of ways, Like I don't know young
- 27:31Speaker 1: people like yo man somebody wants to highlight you about
- 27:34Speaker 1: how to break through in the game, I'm like, they
- 27:36Speaker 1: can go talk to somebody else.
- 27:37Speaker 6: I don't have any answers for you right now.
- 27:38Speaker 2: You don't consider yourself famous, I would.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Lean more toward recognizable. I'm famous in certain places right.
- 27:47Speaker 1: But what I'm saying is if you trying to get
- 27:50Speaker 1: to where I am, I don't know how to tell
- 27:52Speaker 1: you how to break through.
- 27:54Speaker 5: Right.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Here's what will get you on this are your famous thing?
- 27:58Speaker 1: Hanging out with actual faith as people I'm both that'll
- 28:03Speaker 1: like like, it'll make you realize, like going out with
- 28:05Speaker 1: an athlete, that'll make you realize or or look Like
- 28:10Speaker 1: I said, I've been doing this TV thing for a while,
- 28:12Speaker 1: I'm not as or I did. I don't do it anymore.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I'm not as hot as I used to be. I
- 28:16Speaker 1: am okay with that, just to be clear, but I
- 28:19Speaker 1: recognize I'm not as hot as I used to be.
- 28:21Speaker 1: So I've had a couple of times where I'll be
- 28:23Speaker 1: out in New York somewhere with Monica McNutt, who has
- 28:26Speaker 1: two things going for once. She's on ESPN, but Monica
- 28:29Speaker 1: also does Knicks games. I'm out with Monica and these
- 28:33Speaker 1: people coming to Monica to talk about the Knicks. It's like,
- 28:35Speaker 1: I'm not even there, right, And first of all, shout
- 28:38Speaker 1: to her because I love her. I think she's excellent
- 28:40Speaker 1: on some you know, in so many ways. But also, hey, man,
- 28:44Speaker 1: I've been doing this for a long time. Here's like,
- 28:46Speaker 1: I'm not even here.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Respect on your name.
- 28:49Speaker 5: How tall?
- 28:50Speaker 1: I mean, I know you're tall, but how tall is Monica?
- 28:52Speaker 1: And she like, MoMA's about six feet. She's not as
- 28:54Speaker 1: tall as me, but she's like she's in.
- 28:55Speaker 3: That zone, you know. But I'm like, you got the
- 29:01Speaker 3: mega walks, smile bro come up with yeah.
- 29:03Speaker 5: But like, but you say you went too sports.
- 29:04Speaker 1: It's all I'm saying, right, yeah, but she on the
- 29:09Speaker 1: Micks right now.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Yeah. Look, let me tell you I'll never forget this.
- 29:12Speaker 1: When I lived in Miami, this is like twenty thirteen,
- 29:15Speaker 1: twenty fourteen, I was going to the Pillmore and Miami
- 29:18Speaker 1: Beach to see Dave Chappelle do a show, and I
- 29:20Speaker 1: was waiting on Dan Levatard. We was meeting up because
- 29:23Speaker 1: I think he had the tickets, and so I'm standing
- 29:25Speaker 1: outside and some dude comes up to me and it's like, hey,
- 29:28Speaker 1: you know Bobanida, I love you with Dan, and all
- 29:30Speaker 1: this sudden like all right, okay, cool, right. I really
- 29:32Speaker 1: did not feel like being bothered, but you know, I
- 29:35Speaker 1: tried my best. And next thing, you know, buddy comes
- 29:37Speaker 1: up and it says he's with his girl and he's like, hey, man,
- 29:40Speaker 1: is Amy taking a picture? And I'm like, you know what,
- 29:44Speaker 1: it's okay, yeah, we could take a picture. And I
- 29:46Speaker 1: give my sorry dialing up my smile, Bud. He handed
- 29:48Speaker 1: me his phone and it's like, okay, cool, can you
- 29:51Speaker 1: get the sign in the picture? And then him and
- 29:55Speaker 1: his girl went and posed and so.
- 30:01Speaker 5: And so.
- 30:01Speaker 1: All I'm saying is I am very reluctant to say
- 30:04Speaker 1: anything too heavy about how famous I am or I
- 30:10Speaker 1: am not.
- 30:12Speaker 3: I've got like I was out with my partner. We
- 30:15Speaker 3: were in Brooklyn at a show and teching tech from
- 30:21Speaker 3: Smith and Weston is standing there, you know, and this
- 30:24Speaker 3: is Brooklyn, you know Smith Weston. So I'm like, oh,
- 30:26Speaker 3: you know, my man, you know, we know you a
- 30:28Speaker 3: little bit.
- 30:28Speaker 5: We say what up?
- 30:29Speaker 3: And somebody walks up to him and hands him a
- 30:32Speaker 3: camera did you take a picture of me and my girl?
- 30:37Speaker 3: And then got upset when he.
- 30:41Speaker 5: Took it.
- 30:43Speaker 3: But they were like no, they weren't like, you know,
- 30:45Speaker 3: they were like, oh, you know, could you take it again?
- 30:48Speaker 3: You know type yeah, And it's like this, You're in
- 30:52Speaker 3: Brooklyn and this is like you know, cornerstone of Brooklyn
- 30:56Speaker 3: Hippoi and you're asking him to take a pic and
- 30:59Speaker 3: you don't even know who he is.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Yes, there's.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Disrespectful, but it's just like that said, it's just one
- 31:08Speaker 3: of those things like they probably shouldn't know who he is.
- 31:11Speaker 5: They should, but there's no reason for him to And
- 31:16Speaker 5: for me, it'll be like, oh, the on time I
- 31:17Speaker 5: buy into this ship is the.
- 31:19Speaker 1: One time that this is not this is not actually
- 31:24Speaker 1: what it is. Because look, the other thing with me
- 31:26Speaker 1: is I'm a nicer person than people realize. So like,
- 31:31Speaker 1: if that moment happens, I got to keep that happy
- 31:33Speaker 1: face off.
- 31:34Speaker 5: I got to be like, of course I'll take the
- 31:35Speaker 5: picture for you.
- 31:36Speaker 1: You can't look like it has hurt you, right, It's
- 31:38Speaker 1: not even that it hurts you, it's just.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Oh, I didn't think that was what was going to happen.
- 31:44Speaker 2: It was a momentary feeling of pain.
- 31:47Speaker 1: It's not necessarily it's not necessarily pain as much as
- 31:52Speaker 1: it's it's like.
- 31:53Speaker 5: A poke that pad. That felt weird.
- 32:00Speaker 3: See, I've never gotten to that level of fame where
- 32:02Speaker 3: I've even expected somebody to be like, you know, oh
- 32:04Speaker 3: I want to take a picture with you. So whenever
- 32:06Speaker 3: they you know, I'm like, yeah, sure, I'll take the picture.
- 32:09Speaker 7: You know.
- 32:09Speaker 3: That's my response is hand me the camera. Man, No,
- 32:13Speaker 3: I mean no, in certain places, trust me, I know.
- 32:15Speaker 5: But even in certain like New York coomer cons, even there,
- 32:17Speaker 5: we're not inlevel words.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I'm it's recognized.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Man, I do get recognized, but I'm not expecting that
- 32:24Speaker 3: to be the first thing.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, like recognizable that that's that's the certain you
- 32:30Speaker 1: were comfortable with. Now, Like if I pull up to
- 32:32Speaker 1: Madison Square Garden for a game or something, Okay, I'm famous,
- 32:36Speaker 1: right I pull up, I pull up to a rap
- 32:40Speaker 1: show of you know, certain subgenres.
- 32:44Speaker 5: I'm famous.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Yeah, right, there's there's place that could be Look, I'll
- 32:48Speaker 1: be places at walking here in the back.
- 32:50Speaker 5: Oh they go bo body Jones, like it does happen.
- 32:53Speaker 5: It's a thing.
- 32:54Speaker 1: But I remember, like twenty thirteen, I had just had
- 32:56Speaker 1: been doing TV at this port is right before I
- 32:58Speaker 1: moved to Miami, and I was kicking it with Warres.
- 33:00Speaker 5: We was out and that's what I realized. I wasn't famous.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I'm like, Yo, his face don't even be out, nah right,
- 33:07Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Like he don't be outside at all.
- 33:10Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, but like he wear he wore a face
- 33:12Speaker 5: mask you don't like.
- 33:13Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, this is just this is
- 33:15Speaker 1: a much different level of things when it comes to
- 33:19Speaker 1: these guys.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Why earlier you said you didn't earn that Emmy behind you.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Okay, so there is any say hello to Emmy, will
- 33:29Speaker 1: I will read this?
- 33:30Speaker 5: So I will read it off to you.
- 33:32Speaker 1: It's from the twenty fourteen Sports Emmy Awards Outstanding Sports
- 33:35Speaker 1: Documentary Series thirty for thirty, ESPN.
- 33:38Speaker 6: Bomani Jones, producer.
- 33:40Speaker 1: So what it happened was I just started working at
- 33:43Speaker 1: ESPN and they were working on a thirty for thirty
- 33:48Speaker 1: about Randy Moss at the time. It just so happened,
- 33:52Speaker 1: by coincidence, that I had worked years before on a
- 33:58Speaker 1: book proposal, and the plan was to write a book
- 34:00Speaker 1: about Randy Moss and the evolution of the wide receiver position.
- 34:03Speaker 1: And the sample chapter that I wrote for the book
- 34:06Speaker 1: was going to chronicle Randy Moss from high school through
- 34:10Speaker 1: the NFL draft, and so I had spent months and
- 34:12Speaker 1: months and months working on this.
- 34:14Speaker 6: I could pull out the binder.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I still have it over here with my footnotes and
- 34:17Speaker 1: tables and everything at the index, and I pulled all
- 34:19Speaker 1: the stuff off on Lexis next that I had done
- 34:21Speaker 1: all of this. And it turns out that the documentary
- 34:23Speaker 1: they were working on was for the time period of
- 34:25Speaker 1: Randy Moss in high school through the time he got
- 34:28Speaker 1: drafted like it was perfect, and a gentleman named Marky's
- 34:31Speaker 1: Daisy was working on it. He was the first in
- 34:33Speaker 1: house director of a thirty for thirty who worked at ESPN,
- 34:38Speaker 1: and he got it done, and they had already been
- 34:40Speaker 1: working on it. It was they'd already interviewed Randy and
- 34:42Speaker 1: everything else. And then once it got gone, they said, hey,
- 34:45Speaker 1: would you like to be an executive producer on this?
- 34:48Speaker 5: And I said sure.
- 34:49Speaker 1: The Emmy is for the documentary series, the whole thirty
- 34:52Speaker 1: for thirty.
- 34:53Speaker 6: Right, if I had never joined on to the.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Documentary that I joined on too, they would still have
- 34:59Speaker 1: gotten that Emmy.
- 35:01Speaker 5: But I did join on there I got one of
- 35:05Speaker 5: those Zimmys too.
- 35:06Speaker 1: So the only reason that I actually keep the Emmy
- 35:10Speaker 1: in the shot is because of how preposterous it is
- 35:14Speaker 1: that I actually have this.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Don't don't the players who are on the practice store
- 35:19Speaker 2: still get it? Ye your difference, You.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Know, I did do more than that. But that's what
- 35:26Speaker 1: I'm saying. I got this, Simmy. I didn't steal this, Sibby.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I got it, but I didn't really like I was not.
- 35:34Speaker 1: I did not hit the winning basket right to get
- 35:36Speaker 1: us this championship. I did not do that. And so
- 35:38Speaker 1: that's why for me, it's kind of funny because people like,
- 35:41Speaker 1: he's an Emmy Award winning journalist, Yeah, got it.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Well, I like to say I'm Ansner Award winning nominated,
- 35:53Speaker 3: which you are.
- 35:55Speaker 5: Well see my book The Colors. The colors on my
- 35:59Speaker 5: book was not made doing this.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Your name is on the cover of the book. Your
- 36:05Speaker 2: name is on IMDb. You know what I'm saying.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Like everywhere that is any type of referential platform, your
- 36:12Speaker 4: name is there as well as Mellow Brown. Shout out
- 36:14Speaker 4: to our brother Mellow. So what are you talking about
- 36:16Speaker 4: Tom Mandrake as well.
- 36:19Speaker 5: But I will tell you this.
- 36:21Speaker 1: The second season of Game Theory got nominated for an
- 36:25Speaker 1: Image Award and they mail you.
- 36:28Speaker 6: The certificate that they get for them. Yeah, And I took.
- 36:31Speaker 1: That down to Blick and I got that frame and
- 36:33Speaker 1: I had that up on the wall, and I admit,
- 36:35Speaker 1: I look at that one a little bit different, right
- 36:37Speaker 1: like I do look at that like I heard it right,
- 36:40Speaker 1: Like I wasn't mad that I didn't win or anything
- 36:42Speaker 1: like that.
- 36:42Speaker 5: I'm a little skeptical.
- 36:44Speaker 1: But now that I've been doing this a little bit longer,
- 36:47Speaker 1: I know how award sausage is made.
- 36:48Speaker 5: I'm a little bit more skeptical of it.
- 36:50Speaker 1: But I feel like I was. I thought it was
- 36:53Speaker 1: cool that they nominated me.
- 36:54Speaker 3: What's up, y'all, thank you for watching whatever video you
- 36:57Speaker 3: just watched. I need you to hit those like and
- 36:59Speaker 3: the subscribe buttons that you see right below you as
- 37:02Speaker 3: your watching right now, I mean right now, hit them and.
- 37:06Speaker 5: We can get right back to the video you were
- 37:07Speaker 5: just watching like this.
- 37:10Speaker 1: And so I put that up like that would land
- 37:12Speaker 1: that is about me, That was about my show with
- 37:15Speaker 1: the name and the marquee and everything else.
- 37:17Speaker 6: So that would land a little bit different, saying.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Man, don't ever say that ship ever again. Bro.
- 37:23Speaker 3: No, for me, I don't have the same feeling about
- 37:27Speaker 3: money because I wrote that damn book.
- 37:30Speaker 5: That ship the Color if I had.
- 37:34Speaker 2: I mean we mean shipped to color if not for
- 37:36Speaker 2: your words?
- 37:37Speaker 5: Right, look justin I love it personal. I'll tell you
- 37:41Speaker 5: all the time.
- 37:42Speaker 3: You things, but you know, wrote some words and Tom
- 37:46Speaker 3: hadn't drawn the pictures you know they want, So you
- 37:49Speaker 3: know that's real talk. Yeah, I started that fire. I'm
- 37:53Speaker 3: not you know, I'm not even gonna act like I did.
- 37:56Speaker 2: You said you wanted to write a book? Are you
- 37:58Speaker 2: gonna lest the help of your sister? Like? What do
- 37:59Speaker 2: you gonna do to get your own?
- 38:02Speaker 7: And we do?
- 38:03Speaker 6: We do different things.
- 38:06Speaker 5: I have an idea.
- 38:09Speaker 1: I don't want to give it all the way, but
- 38:10Speaker 1: it's an essay collection that I want to work on.
- 38:12Speaker 1: But what I've after I stopped doing Game Theory, and
- 38:14Speaker 1: I talked about this a bit on shows that I
- 38:15Speaker 1: had done, and I don't think people fully appreciated what
- 38:17Speaker 1: I was saying. But I was really one thing that
- 38:20Speaker 1: was interesting in doing game Theory, and the HBO executives
- 38:22Speaker 1: would bring up when we'd have topics and they'd be like,
- 38:24Speaker 1: hey man, you got to be careful that you're not
- 38:26Speaker 1: just doing a show every week about something you don't like, right, like, like,
- 38:31Speaker 1: people love sports, don't ever lose sight of what it
- 38:34Speaker 1: is that people love about this, you know, because you know,
- 38:37Speaker 1: we were doing this hard hitting issues and stuff like that,
- 38:39Speaker 1: right you know, and there's a general snarky tone to
- 38:42Speaker 1: comedy and everything else. But they were like, hey, man,
- 38:44Speaker 1: don't don't you can just be out here negative.
- 38:46Speaker 6: About this stuff all the time.
- 38:47Speaker 1: So I thought it was true, And so I want
- 38:49Speaker 1: to lock in with my work more on what things
- 38:52Speaker 1: are that we love about sports, what the things are
- 38:55Speaker 1: that make us gravitate towards, Why it's such a like
- 38:59Speaker 1: centerpiece of community, why it's so magnetic, all of those things,
- 39:03Speaker 1: and so like it's those things all my shows now
- 39:06Speaker 1: and ultimately with the book if I.
- 39:08Speaker 5: Get to it.
- 39:08Speaker 6: That's what I want to explore, is that we don't lose.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Sight, especially since the Internet people have figured out that
- 39:15Speaker 1: rage and anger really sells. Like I don't think I'm
- 39:18Speaker 1: not sure I'm making a great business decision in this focus,
- 39:22Speaker 1: but this is what I want to lock in on.
- 39:23Speaker 6: These are the things that I think are important.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Yeah, we talk about that all the time.
- 39:29Speaker 5: Neativity, we go through that all the time.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Like lately I've been realizing, like I have to call
- 39:34Speaker 3: I have that not negativity, but I think because there's
- 39:38Speaker 3: such a.
- 39:40Speaker 5: I don't.
- 39:40Speaker 3: I mean, sports has its own issues as well, but
- 39:42Speaker 3: in deep them there's there's a lot of negative stuff
- 39:46Speaker 3: and a lot of that negative thought processes are dominant
- 39:49Speaker 3: thought processes. So for me to call them out, it's necessary, needed,
- 39:55Speaker 3: and so I don't look at that as being negative,
- 39:57Speaker 3: but it does, you know, get them views because people
- 40:00Speaker 3: like to see the comment.
- 40:01Speaker 5: It's an outrage machine.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Like people go to the internet to be mad, and look, man,
- 40:05Speaker 1: you know, anybody that followed me on the tweets in
- 40:08Speaker 1: the early days, I don't think they The thing was,
- 40:12Speaker 1: I was never mad. I was just really good at
- 40:15Speaker 1: shooting people down right. I never I never started to fight,
- 40:19Speaker 1: but I was gonna end it. And I was really
- 40:21Speaker 1: just it was like being in the cafeteria, like I
- 40:23Speaker 1: was joning on cats, and I would do that anymore. Obviously,
- 40:27Speaker 1: I got to be a little bit like after a
- 40:29Speaker 1: certain point, I was I was a little too visible
- 40:31Speaker 1: to just be could keeping doing this and somebody was probably.
- 40:34Speaker 6: Gonna pull up on me at some point.
- 40:36Speaker 5: But I had like I didn't want to do that anymore.
- 40:39Speaker 1: But I was never actually mad, Like Katie Nolan once
- 40:41Speaker 1: told me that she had a picture of me until
- 40:44Speaker 1: she actually met me. She said she was around me
- 40:45Speaker 1: for like five minutes and she was like, oh, none
- 40:47Speaker 1: of this makes him mad, right, Like people were able
- 40:49Speaker 1: to grasp to fully understand what type of person I
- 40:52Speaker 1: was once I was there, But then I just started
- 40:53Speaker 1: looking more and more Like I look at my friends
- 40:55Speaker 1: and I'll call them and be like, hey man, you
- 40:57Speaker 1: just go on.
- 40:58Speaker 5: Here to be mad like this.
- 41:00Speaker 1: This is like the place we used to go on
- 41:02Speaker 1: the Internet to talk about the things that we liked,
- 41:04Speaker 1: and now we go on there primarily to talk about
- 41:07Speaker 1: the things that we don't like because they figured out
- 41:10Speaker 1: that sells, likee sex that sells, like crack that sells,
- 41:13Speaker 1: Like all this other stuff is people just going on
- 41:15Speaker 1: there to be mad about stuff, and I just can't, Like,
- 41:18Speaker 1: I can't traffic like that. Like I parlayed social media
- 41:21Speaker 1: into a career, I parlayed it into most of the
- 41:24Speaker 1: stuff that I have, I do not participate in that
- 41:27Speaker 1: space anymore, Like to the point where I look at
- 41:29Speaker 1: other people and I'm like, hey man, a lot of
- 41:31Speaker 1: y'all are doing an impression of what I used to
- 41:33Speaker 1: do back in the day.
- 41:33Speaker 6: Don't you notice I'm not here anymore?
- 41:35Speaker 1: But does that not make you ask some questions about
- 41:38Speaker 1: what exactly it is that we're doing. So in my work,
- 41:41Speaker 1: like we're doing a series right now in my podcast
- 41:43Speaker 1: about the year nineteen ninety six in rap, right because
- 41:46Speaker 1: the year of ninety six in rap was amazing, And
- 41:49Speaker 1: so now I get to have my people on and
- 41:51Speaker 1: we lock in on something that we love. That is
- 41:55Speaker 1: That's where I want to go now with the things
- 41:57Speaker 1: that I'm doing, is what are the things that we
- 42:00Speaker 1: love rather than these things that just get us charged up?
- 42:04Speaker 5: Well, speaking of something that we love.
- 42:07Speaker 3: I did want to know what did you think or
- 42:11Speaker 3: how are you feeling about the Ostro nominees this year
- 42:14Speaker 3: because I saw that you did do a show where
- 42:16Speaker 3: you were distrussing one bat after another and highest to lowest. Yeah,
- 42:23Speaker 3: and I know most people were, you know, out here
- 42:25Speaker 3: comparing one battle and loved with sinners.
- 42:28Speaker 5: So I wanted to know why highest.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Lowest because I talked about highest and lowest when I
- 42:33Speaker 1: did that, because I was doing the show with my
- 42:35Speaker 1: guy Howard Bryant, who is a big movie guy. I
- 42:38Speaker 1: am not a giant movie guy. He is a huge
- 42:40Speaker 1: movie guy. Yeah, And so I went and checked out
- 42:43Speaker 1: one battle after another because I was kind of.
- 42:47Speaker 6: Peeping the larger discourse.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Then I watched Highest to Lowest, but I watched it
- 42:55Speaker 1: after I watched High to Low because Howard had recommended that.
- 42:58Speaker 1: I watched the kiroll Sowell High to Low the Highest Lowess.
- 43:02Speaker 5: Okay, I've not seen how to Low?
- 43:04Speaker 1: Okay, hey how the lowest Monster? You can get it
- 43:07Speaker 1: on Max or what what is the old people? The
- 43:10Speaker 1: old movie streaming JOYD. I can't remember, but it's yeah, yeah,
- 43:14Speaker 1: but I think that's the one. But I highly recommend
- 43:16Speaker 1: you check it out. Okay, and it's a very interesting
- 43:19Speaker 1: ju justtae position against Highest to Lowest. But that was
- 43:21Speaker 1: why I picked that, because I was like, hey, I
- 43:22Speaker 1: want to see what happens. Will my audience respond to
- 43:25Speaker 1: me talking about movies if I talk about them with
- 43:28Speaker 1: an actual, factual movie expert. One battle after another, don't
- 43:32Speaker 1: let any white people food, y'all. This ship was not
- 43:34Speaker 1: it was It was not John Blaze. It was an
- 43:37Speaker 1: It was an entertaining it was If you treat it
- 43:39Speaker 1: as an entertaining action movie, it's fine. If you grew
- 43:43Speaker 1: up around any actual factual revolutionaries, you find yourself pointing
- 43:46Speaker 1: at the screen and being mad, you know, and just
- 43:49Speaker 1: being like, hey, man, like what are we positioning here?
- 43:52Speaker 1: And I admit, when you know that Paul Thomas Anderson
- 43:57Speaker 1: is common law married to a black one woman, it
- 44:00Speaker 1: makes you ask a lot more questions about.
- 44:02Speaker 2: A lot of day may not even on paper.
- 44:05Speaker 5: I don't think they're on paper. Wow, I didn't know that.
- 44:07Speaker 5: But they got kids and yeah, yeah, that's what it's
- 44:09Speaker 5: like law. That's an Yeah, I don't think they on paper.
- 44:12Speaker 6: I could be wrong, but I don't think they on paper.
- 44:14Speaker 1: But it didn't make you be like, I bet you
- 44:16Speaker 1: buy a Rudolph came home like so that's what you're like,
- 44:18Speaker 1: huh you want me to be.
- 44:20Speaker 3: It made me to need as much I love my
- 44:23Speaker 3: Rudolf and I love her. It made me like, okay, Hollywood,
- 44:27Speaker 3: you know like it because it was like, because you
- 44:30Speaker 3: you you come home to this, you have not.
- 44:33Speaker 5: Left this man? Yes, all right? And that's like this.
- 44:36Speaker 3: Film should be, you know, grounds for divorce. I this
- 44:40Speaker 3: this film should be grounds for divorce.
- 44:42Speaker 2: You know.
- 44:42Speaker 1: It made it made me wonder all kind of ship
- 44:44Speaker 1: he'd be asking her to do.
- 44:45Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah, like that I got.
- 44:48Speaker 5: I mean, is any of his fair problems? Yes, it is.
- 44:56Speaker 1: It kind of is now. I watch Centers, and I
- 45:00Speaker 1: watched Centers at my house and I thought it was
- 45:03Speaker 1: a cool way to spend an evening. I did not
- 45:07Speaker 1: think that I was watching the greatest movie that I
- 45:10Speaker 1: had ever seen. And that's okay, you know, like I
- 45:13Speaker 1: just didn't. And that's that's the other part about the
- 45:16Speaker 1: internet though. And then I do love something, you better
- 45:18Speaker 1: love it too.
- 45:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:23Speaker 1: So yeah, so it's interesting, like I have not kept
- 45:25Speaker 1: up that much with all the films that have come out,
- 45:26Speaker 1: but I'm telling you now, they gonna get that one
- 45:28Speaker 1: battle after another, a whole bunch of stuff, and we're
- 45:30Speaker 1: not gonna come back like we did with Crash, but
- 45:34Speaker 1: we are going to have a huh what were we
- 45:36Speaker 1: thinking back then?
- 45:37Speaker 5: Is this really?
- 45:38Speaker 7: Like?
- 45:39Speaker 3: No, no, no, I famously like that's one of our
- 45:42Speaker 3: other biggest you know, YouTube videos, is me pretty much
- 45:47Speaker 3: hating one bat out for another. I walked out of
- 45:49Speaker 3: the theater. I was screaming and yelling as I walked out.
- 45:53Speaker 3: This is some bullshit. There's a bunch of other journalists there.
- 45:57Speaker 3: They were all looking at me, and I was like, yeah,
- 45:59Speaker 3: you know, I I know y'all like this wax shit
- 46:01Speaker 3: fuck y'all, you know, straight up and down.
- 46:04Speaker 5: That's how I left the theater.
- 46:05Speaker 3: And I have streamed about it any opportunity and I don't.
- 46:10Speaker 5: But I also as I walked out, I knew.
- 46:12Speaker 3: That it was going to be the Oscar front Runner,
- 46:15Speaker 3: and I knew that they'll never ever.
- 46:17Speaker 5: Look back and be like, know what we're we thinking
- 46:19Speaker 5: of the film because it.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Is it is necessary for them to have this film
- 46:25Speaker 3: be you know what it is, and they needed to
- 46:27Speaker 3: win so that they can feel good about themselves and
- 46:30Speaker 3: think that.
- 46:30Speaker 5: Yeah, again, Crash. It's not as inane is Crash to
- 46:36Speaker 5: be fair? And I like Crash. When I saw it, I.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Like, you know, at the time, I didn't dislike it
- 46:41Speaker 1: at the Yeah, that's time.
- 46:43Speaker 7: I think.
- 46:43Speaker 3: I like racist jokes, and so that's why I like Crash.
- 46:47Speaker 3: It's not so many great racist jokes that.
- 46:49Speaker 5: Yeah, and high sight.
- 46:51Speaker 2: Maybe we were misguided, but well, well the.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Other part of it is, like times out we were
- 46:58Speaker 1: I'm operating on the assumption that I'm a little bit
- 47:00Speaker 1: older than you, so you have more bid excuse.
- 47:02Speaker 3: And I'm old, yeah, yeah, yeah, excuse, I like racist?
- 47:10Speaker 2: When did it come?
- 47:10Speaker 5: So it got me?
- 47:11Speaker 3: You know, they made a bunch of racist jokes, and yeah.
- 47:15Speaker 4: It came out, Crash came out in ninety six.
- 47:19Speaker 2: I was about to say, what the fuck, there's something
- 47:21Speaker 2: else called crash, and said, O, six.
- 47:23Speaker 6: Or six, I think I was grown.
- 47:26Speaker 2: How was that, Howard?
- 47:28Speaker 5: I had no excuses two thousand and four. O.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it was still a teenager.
- 47:38Speaker 5: As old as I thought.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Yeah, so I guess it's no excuse for me. And besides, you.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Know, no, no no, no, no, no, no no no,
- 47:45Speaker 1: you had excuses.
- 47:46Speaker 5: You an excuses. I just got you should have been
- 47:49Speaker 5: a little more military, Howard. I don't know.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I'm about to say, Like like like
- 47:53Speaker 1: if you went to the white people's schools, perhaps you
- 47:55Speaker 1: would have been simply a touch more optimistic.
- 47:57Speaker 6: But also the white people's schools they be hard than you.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Boy, I had seen that that that turned you one
- 48:02Speaker 1: direction or another. Boy, gracious, yeah, I don't, I think,
- 48:10Speaker 1: because I can't lie.
- 48:11Speaker 3: I just remember, I'll never get that don Cheetah line
- 48:14Speaker 3: when he talks about parking your cars on the lawne
- 48:16Speaker 3: and just I fell out in the theater.
- 48:18Speaker 5: So I'm just you know, I'm terrible man.
- 48:21Speaker 1: When they put the blunt, when the when the gun
- 48:22Speaker 1: shot blanks, I was like, oh you you you clever guys.
- 48:27Speaker 6: Thought of everything.
- 48:28Speaker 2: I couldn't do it. I couldn't do it.
- 48:30Speaker 5: I would not have I would like to watch it again.
- 48:32Speaker 1: But oh, your highest, the lowest, I couldn't do it. Okay, okay,
- 48:37Speaker 1: So this is the thing for me, the highest.
- 48:38Speaker 6: The lowest.
- 48:39Speaker 5: Oh my god, there's so much.
- 48:41Speaker 1: I did not find it to be nearly as terrible
- 48:46Speaker 1: as everybody else did, because I've been watching Spike Lee
- 48:49Speaker 1: movies for forty years.
- 48:51Speaker 7: Yes, like it is.
- 48:53Speaker 5: Yes, ain't this ain't the first.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Yes, I'm just saying it did spike Lee things. But
- 49:00Speaker 1: that rat battle at the end had y'all till you
- 49:04Speaker 1: know that that rat battle at the air for other
- 49:07Speaker 1: people was like for me in the second Matrix movie
- 49:09Speaker 1: where he reached up in her chest and restarted Our Heart.
- 49:11Speaker 5: And I said, I never saw the third Matrix movie.
- 49:16Speaker 5: I got up and left and I never watched. I
- 49:20Speaker 5: never heard the third one. Heard it was awful me
- 49:25Speaker 5: when it came out.
- 49:27Speaker 2: The third one when he did that when he restarted.
- 49:29Speaker 5: That was the second one. It was the second one.
- 49:31Speaker 5: I pro didn't I see the third. The third one
- 49:35Speaker 5: could have had a motherfucking and that looked just like me.
- 49:37Speaker 5: I would have no idea because I never saw it.
- 49:40Speaker 1: But he because also the second one had when he
- 49:42Speaker 1: fought like ten of the ages.
- 49:43Speaker 5: Smith's it was more, it was more. Yeah, it's like
- 49:49Speaker 5: I was really suspending disbelief for these people. And then
- 49:52Speaker 5: he reached up in her chest and jump started the heart.
- 49:54Speaker 5: I said, no, I cannot.
- 49:57Speaker 1: And that's how people treated that rat battle at the end.
- 50:01Speaker 3: It was it wasn't that for me. High those is like,
- 50:05Speaker 3: like you said, it's spike le it it's best of worse.
- 50:08Speaker 3: But it was the music video at the end, when
- 50:11Speaker 3: Shorty was singing for like fifteen minutes, it was asap Rocky.
- 50:20Speaker 5: Telling themsel please kill me. You didn't do that.
- 50:24Speaker 2: I don't know when you went back. Your little imagery
- 50:26Speaker 2: went away off the screen.
- 50:27Speaker 5: But oh ship, I'm going got so he got so
- 50:34Speaker 5: charged up. Then they hit the roll camera but on
- 50:37Speaker 5: the other side of that, and that ain't even the
- 50:39Speaker 5: right camera. So let me TIXU.
- 50:41Speaker 2: I gotta ask you you know, and everyone has their
- 50:43Speaker 2: own thing to each their own.
- 50:45Speaker 4: Why did you think Sinners was just okay, this is
- 50:50Speaker 4: not the Internet attacking by the way, Yeah yeah, yeah, no, no, no, no,
- 50:53Speaker 4: I just.
- 50:53Speaker 5: It's not even though four for one.
- 50:56Speaker 1: When when when all the were wolves broke out and
- 51:00Speaker 1: broke out into song and dance?
- 51:02Speaker 6: Oh whatever they are?
- 51:03Speaker 5: Oh my god, in your oh my god, there you go,
- 51:07Speaker 5: see there we go. You was you was already you
- 51:09Speaker 5: was already this close. It was already. I'm not jumping
- 51:12Speaker 5: on you. I'm not the Internet.
- 51:13Speaker 1: You was supposed it was supposed to allow me to
- 51:15Speaker 1: be facetious, right you was supposed to allow me to
- 51:18Speaker 1: be decetious right there. But anyway, where they broke out
- 51:21Speaker 1: into song and dance, I was like, hey, man, that
- 51:23Speaker 1: ain't what I thought we were signing up for.
- 51:28Speaker 5: I was not here for the song and dance. Man,
- 51:30Speaker 5: I'm not for I didn't know it was a musical.
- 51:33Speaker 5: I thought it had music in it. I ain't know
- 51:35Speaker 5: it was a musical.
- 51:37Speaker 2: I thought it was like.
- 51:37Speaker 5: I enjoyed it. I thought it was I thought it
- 51:40Speaker 5: was a good time. I don't I don't know what
- 51:43Speaker 5: more I need to give you. People like I like
- 51:47Speaker 5: watching it. Okay, it made for a good it made
- 51:52Speaker 5: you people, Yeah, yeah, yeah, you people. Yes, But no
- 52:00Speaker 5: I didn't. I don't know.
- 52:02Speaker 1: It's hard to explain, like me to like affirm and negative.
- 52:05Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, Well, no, I'm not.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Well yeah, sure, yeah, that's like like I.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Don't just that was that was how I felt. It
- 52:15Speaker 1: was a pretty it was a pretty good date, you
- 52:16Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. Like we enjoyed watching the movie.
- 52:20Speaker 1: She felt the same way. For whatever it's worth, I
- 52:24Speaker 1: was not alone.
- 52:27Speaker 5: But yeah, I don't throw come with me like I
- 52:33Speaker 5: didn't feel like it was like, oh, I don't know,
- 52:35Speaker 5: I don't. I don't.
- 52:35Speaker 4: You didn't feel anything trans transcended about it. You didn't
- 52:38Speaker 4: connect with the ancestors at any point?
- 52:41Speaker 6: Yeah, no, no, no, there we go. No, I don't
- 52:42Speaker 6: really be talking to it. I don't really be talking
- 52:44Speaker 6: to them like that.
- 52:45Speaker 7: Okay.
- 52:45Speaker 5: I thought I thought.
- 52:46Speaker 1: I thought del Roy Lindo did a very good I
- 52:48Speaker 1: thought dell Roy Lindo did it, did a very good
- 52:50Speaker 1: job in the movie. I thought his he was very good.
- 52:52Speaker 1: I thought Michael B. Jordan hit both his his characters.
- 52:56Speaker 1: That one Little Mama fond like I thought, you know.
- 52:59Speaker 5: Moon Amos, that was good to me.
- 53:04Speaker 3: I think you talk about the new one. Uh, I
- 53:06Speaker 3: just want to see how it might have been both
- 53:09Speaker 3: think about it. There's a few little fine women, and
- 53:12Speaker 3: it was good.
- 53:12Speaker 7: It was a good time. It was good.
- 53:14Speaker 5: Okay, okay, before we you know, deep digging this hole,
- 53:20Speaker 5: I felt like it was a setup, and no, I
- 53:23Speaker 5: just I.
- 53:23Speaker 2: Needed to know. But I do follow up questions. You've
- 53:26Speaker 2: been saying ship and I'm gonna follow it.
- 53:28Speaker 5: And I don't buy you follow it up. I just
- 53:31Speaker 5: I just see what it's doing to you. I tried
- 53:33Speaker 5: to help you out of this hole. Did I let
- 53:36Speaker 5: it go?
- 53:36Speaker 2: I let you say your peace. I didn't go after
- 53:38Speaker 2: you no more.
- 53:38Speaker 3: I'm trying to help because I was one common thing.
- 53:43Speaker 3: I don't know if you I know, I gave you
- 53:45Speaker 3: a chance. I don't know if you mean I gave
- 53:47Speaker 3: you the book. I don't know if you had a
- 53:48Speaker 3: chance to read it. But one common thing in Jimmy
- 53:50Speaker 3: Hendrix and something in Centers that got me man like
- 53:53Speaker 3: as a DJ, as someone who studied black music, was
- 53:57Speaker 3: that idea you know that we and it kind of
- 54:00Speaker 3: solidified it for me because I've always thought of it
- 54:02Speaker 3: as genre being some bullshit and the only thing that
- 54:06Speaker 3: changes is technology and time. And but what it really
- 54:11Speaker 3: solidified for me is that we've always been making blues,
- 54:14Speaker 3: you know, it's just what changes is time and technology.
- 54:17Speaker 3: And we also kind of we'll do things like will
- 54:20Speaker 3: exhaust certain things that we do jazz, you know, and
- 54:22Speaker 3: Coltrane does everything he can't outs and everything he can,
- 54:25Speaker 3: and so then we move on to things, you know,
- 54:26Speaker 3: Hndreds pitch up the guitar, the electric guitar comes out,
- 54:29Speaker 3: and he fucking exhausted, you know, and then we do this,
- 54:32Speaker 3: and we do funk, we do.
- 54:33Speaker 5: That, and now it's on the hip hop.
- 54:36Speaker 3: And I've kind of gotten to this theory about like
- 54:38Speaker 3: what hip hop is the last form of black music.
- 54:40Speaker 5: But that's a whole other subject. So but my question
- 54:43Speaker 5: was that didn't hit you in your chest when you
- 54:45Speaker 5: were watching that movie, Like, I know, you know what
- 54:47Speaker 5: it is.
- 54:47Speaker 1: And it's interesting as I hear you say that, Yeah,
- 54:52Speaker 1: I do not consume movies.
- 54:55Speaker 5: Deeply, I don't know what I'm saying.
- 54:59Speaker 1: So, like he did say that you could put an
- 55:01Speaker 1: album in front of me as far as out and
- 55:05Speaker 1: there are levels of discussion that I will get to.
- 55:08Speaker 1: So like, as I hear you say that, I'm like, yeah,
- 55:12Speaker 1: I see all that, you know what I mean. But
- 55:14Speaker 1: like when I've turned on a movie, by and large,
- 55:17Speaker 1: I'm just here for a good time, you know music,
- 55:21Speaker 1: I'm not that way, yes, you know, so, like I
- 55:24Speaker 1: so the idea that that is the running theme of
- 55:27Speaker 1: the movie. I bet if I watched it again, it
- 55:30Speaker 1: would probably hit me in a different way and I'd
- 55:32Speaker 1: be like, oh, okay, you know, like I see what
- 55:35Speaker 1: it is that you're saying right now. But I was
- 55:39Speaker 1: cool with it just being a good time. I didn't
- 55:41Speaker 1: require it to be more right now. I also admit
- 55:45Speaker 1: that part of this might be that I found that
- 55:47Speaker 1: the Internet was having a deep off right they were,
- 55:52Speaker 1: and I refuse to participate in that stuff. That's fair,
- 55:57Speaker 1: But that's all me right, Like that is is I
- 55:59Speaker 1: can't we rap fans. You know what this is when
- 56:02Speaker 1: you let some people's fans make you not fuck with
- 56:05Speaker 1: somebody because you just don't want to be associated with
- 56:07Speaker 1: those people.
- 56:08Speaker 5: I don't think that's fully what I was doing.
- 56:09Speaker 1: But you know what, I'm gonna go watch this again
- 56:12Speaker 1: and I might even call y'all or whatever.
- 56:13Speaker 5: And we can holler by it.
- 56:14Speaker 1: Because I think Coogler's I mean, I think Coogler's that
- 56:17Speaker 1: dude man on a number of levels. And I thought
- 56:21Speaker 1: it was visually, I thought a very good movie. I
- 56:23Speaker 1: thought it looked excellent, Like I have all kinds of
- 56:26Speaker 1: positives that I could give about it.
- 56:29Speaker 5: But for me, in the way that I consume movies,
- 56:33Speaker 5: I enjoyed it.
- 56:35Speaker 1: And there's some movies that I can't go like molecular
- 56:37Speaker 1: level with you, right, yeah, but this one, man, I don't.
- 56:41Speaker 5: Want to say, nomin that color is what comes next.
- 56:44Speaker 7: It was.
- 56:45Speaker 5: I enjoyed it a great deal.
- 56:47Speaker 4: I do appreciate that you will be watching it again
- 56:50Speaker 4: and with a different lens this time perhaps, And I
- 56:53Speaker 4: will say, but may I didn't go in and is
- 56:55Speaker 4: thinking this was gonna be on some church stuff. Like
- 56:57Speaker 4: I thought it was just a vampire movie. And that's
- 57:00Speaker 4: where it changed from because it didn't be in my chest.
- 57:03Speaker 4: As Ben said, I went in there expecting on some
- 57:05Speaker 4: regular movie ship and it wasn't.
- 57:07Speaker 2: It was way more than that.
- 57:08Speaker 1: So I also know if that vampires are were wolves,
- 57:10Speaker 1: it ain't that different.
- 57:13Speaker 2: You were fine, like you you were so close, like
- 57:20Speaker 2: just getting out of it.
- 57:22Speaker 5: I just we're gonna move on.
- 57:23Speaker 2: But you were like you were you pulled yourself right
- 57:27Speaker 2: back in.
- 57:29Speaker 5: See Y's that you thought it was the whole. I
- 57:31Speaker 5: thought it was the shade.
- 57:35Speaker 4: You know, Ben is like you are fucking being up
- 57:37Speaker 4: because he just keeps disappearing every time I look down
- 57:39Speaker 4: his little image.
- 57:42Speaker 2: You don't even know what's happening.
- 57:43Speaker 4: All right, Look look, but MOONI you know, I do
- 57:50Speaker 4: want to understand. Like if we talked a lot about entertainment, right,
- 57:53Speaker 4: we talked a lot about books and all this other stuff.
- 57:56Speaker 2: Are you do you read comics at all?
- 57:59Speaker 1: So how I never really got into that space. Like
- 58:03Speaker 1: my best friend from growing up, he was a big
- 58:05Speaker 1: COmON guy.
- 58:05Speaker 5: I think part of it is I was.
- 58:06Speaker 6: Always terrible at drawing. Well, I think it's two things.
- 58:09Speaker 1: I was terrible at drawing, and I had a childhood
- 58:11Speaker 1: that did not involve spending a lot of time hanging
- 58:13Speaker 1: out with children. So with those people were reading comic books,
- 58:18Speaker 1: I was with my parents watching The Big Deal Larry
- 58:21Speaker 1: news Hour.
- 58:22Speaker 6: I was very well versed in the world.
- 58:25Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I've been Yeah. I was definitely one of
- 58:28Speaker 1: those could you read Harper's I did not.
- 58:31Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I did not.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Brother moozon it and like get that far. But I
- 58:34Speaker 1: was at I was a sight to be seen at
- 58:37Speaker 1: the barbershop.
- 58:38Speaker 7: Boy, I was.
- 58:40Speaker 6: I was a mind blower in the barbershop. They couldn't
- 58:43Speaker 6: believe I existed in real life.
- 58:44Speaker 3: I had to tell my mom that Brother Movesome was
- 58:47Speaker 3: reading Harper's because my mom read Harper's, and so I
- 58:50Speaker 3: read Harper's. Harper's is fantastic, by the way, Like when
- 58:54Speaker 3: Brother Moveson brought it up, I was like, yes, man,
- 58:57Speaker 3: good magazine.
- 58:58Speaker 1: But ya, Like, my brother and sister are much older
- 59:02Speaker 1: than me. My brother thirteen years olderan and my sister's
- 59:04Speaker 1: ten years older than me. So I grew up like
- 59:06Speaker 1: connessort as the only child.
- 59:08Speaker 5: But I grew up.
- 59:09Speaker 1: I went to school where my parents worked, which was
- 59:11Speaker 1: like twenty something miles away from home, and so I
- 59:14Speaker 1: was going and hanging out at a college campus after school.
- 59:18Speaker 1: You know, So like I was, my childhood is much
- 59:21Speaker 1: different than most people's childhoods would be in terms of exposure,
- 59:26Speaker 1: I think would be the way to put it all.
- 59:29Speaker 3: Right, Well, we were just before we do get out
- 59:31Speaker 3: of here. We were just speaking about the wire real quick.
- 59:34Speaker 3: And while I was looking this up, I mean, first
- 59:36Speaker 3: of all, I wanted to give a oh Man, just
- 59:39Speaker 3: a resting peace shout out to the actor who played
- 59:43Speaker 3: Ziggi Zabaka.
- 59:45Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, he passed away.
- 59:48Speaker 3: They're saying the cause of death is James Ransom, and
- 59:53Speaker 3: they're saying the cause of death is suicide. So I
- 59:55Speaker 3: did want to give a resting peace shout out to them.
- 59:59Speaker 3: Because while I was doing the research for this interview,
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: I found your and this is actually from before the
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: series ended.
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I would redo that list. Okay, so I won't
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: do the whole list, but i'll that's like twenty years ago.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: I can't be help. I can't be hell responsible these things.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: I do just want to read down your top five
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: because I do know about your long term hatred for.
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: Fuck that dude.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: Ready.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: The funny thing is me and my best friend were
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: discussing interest yesterday, right and because right now I'm watching
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: Hijack and I've realized, like I realized this through the years.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: As much I love it, but a man will take
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: a chet for anything. He does not care about the
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: quality of the script.
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: He just want to work.
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: I watched some movie he wait wait wait, wait, wait,
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: just says so I'm clear, is your disdain for the
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: character he played or Interests himself?
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: No, it's the difference this But I'm just this is
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: the funny thing, right because before we get to this list,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: I was distressing this with my best friend and years
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: ago Interest came into a club I was each and
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: I tried to get her to DJ because he is
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: the DJ, and he gave me the yeah whatever made
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: you know type thing, and my.
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: Man was like, look, that man played an asshole way
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: too well mh to not be something of an asshole
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: and be trying to defend and be trying to defend
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: that ship. Like all I'm gonna say is this is
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: this is.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Just me and my Yeah, they all do, they all
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: know this is this is this is what I realized,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: what I felt, how I felt like, what was for
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: real about it?
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: You know, never in my life had.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I said to myself, well, hold on, we got to
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: consider both sides on apartheid.
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: Then I saw that.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: String of Mandela movie and I was like, well, hold on,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: let's hear these white people out.
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: It just played yeah, he was in lor Walter Freedom
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: was yeah. And by the way, Stringer Mandela play straight.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Stringer Bell playing Nelson Mandela is up there with like
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: the present with Holly Berry to play her in the movie,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: Like this doesn't match anybody, okay, whatever you right? Like
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: like if that's the case, they need to have scenes
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: with Nelson Mandela be like swinging from a grappling hook
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: and just start like just start whooping the Africanta's asses
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: all over the place, like okay, cool.
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: But anyway, yeah, I just I gave. I wouldn't say
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: I gave a part time to try, but I just
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: couldn't just be assuming that Stringer Bell was right. But anyway,
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: show you're in the right line of business.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: I mean, I think you do fabulous as a comedy
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: writer as well.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: I mean I had had a comedy show for I know,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: I know, I know, but like, yeah, I need to
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: have you go Holly Davids as lov you know what
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I'm saying, Like holy but what what was you gonna say?
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: But my top five I five recall I think I
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: still like, okay, right, we're top five are Play Davis.
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: I love Play Davis. I mean, how can you not
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: rest in peace? Rest and peace?
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: I once saw him on the train brouh he was
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: with his family. My man had on a full denim suit,
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: that's all. I'll never forget.
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: Said on my jenim pants, you know, denim white shirt.
- 1:03:10Speaker 5: And I I didn't do it, you know what I mean?
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: I sell bruh, you know so bad. But I held
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: together and let my man live.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: But you know, rest of peace I wish I had now,
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: you know, because you know that man deserved the props
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: every day.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: But Klay Davis. Number four is bubbles. I love bubbles.
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: I mean, how can you not? Again? Yeah, sincerity goes
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: a long way. Sah. You know my man loved the crack,
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: you know, like he did not deny it.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Uh, Lester Freeman and number three yo Lester Freeman. Like
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: if I grew up to be Lester Freeman, it would
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: have been okay right. And Lester Freeman, by the way,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: is as a character a great testament to an axiom
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: that people do not recognize. You can't savor for him,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: he might you, you can't him just maybe. Ye. He
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: raided this same shorty though he shaved her immediately. He
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: was exactly what she needed. He swooped in like you
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: know and changed her life.
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: Yes, yes, he could do it. Old head bike and safer.
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: That's the thing. You're not gonna save her if y'all
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: did the same home rule class. But he got a chance,
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: all right. That's why you look at us like that.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: This is all y'all.
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: You know what right? You know what? Right she was.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: She was literally on the pole, I mean straight up
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: on the pole. He gave her a dollhouse media tour
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: because she just needed she just needed to be loved.
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: And now she at home painting doll houses. That's right.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Went to nursing school. They all say they going to
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: nursing school. They don't never actually go.
- 1:04:57Speaker 7: But she did.
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: That's the frame, and you might have to raise him up,
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: all right. Number two Bunny Colvin.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: I loved Buddy in a very because again Buddy was
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: another one, the sincerity with a long way with Buddy Buddy.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: The thing I loved about Buddy as a character was
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: you knew every word he said, he meant at every
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: single turn.
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: Right, Hey, he say name it. I wouldn't have done that.
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: I loved this little ass in jail. I hated him
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: in a way that.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: I don't feel comfortable saying, considering that he was like thirteen.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: I didn't hate name it as much as I hate
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: the dude who got rid of number one on the list.
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: Uh little Canard.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: Canard shouldn't feel this way about children, But I fuck
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: Canard to his day. Fuck Cannard, and that is your
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: number one?
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: Who is omar? The little was the illness? But no, no,
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: you got me thinking now though, like now now Canard.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: When Michael had to beat up Canard, I hated how
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: much I enjoyed that.
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: Yo.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: Okay, hold up, I gotta stop because I don't know
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: if you know about it, because I'm all right, I've
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: seen this scene too many times.
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: Michael starts hitting him. I know what you gonna talk about.
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: I know what you're gonna says the voice of the background.
- 1:06:22Speaker 7: Oh money as kid, Haha, I'm all right, guy in.
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: The backgrounds or the Wire that are so good? Is
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: that what it was?
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: It was just because that's the one that I didn't
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: all right for the listeners for people don't know The
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: Wire the greatest show of all time, or one of
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: them of all time Teachers. Two characters are both children,
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: and at one point one of the children they're teenagers.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: Michael is beating on this other little boy, Canard in
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: the middle of the street at night, and I mean
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: whipping his little ass like he's holding him and punching him.
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: In the face.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: By the way, Canard is not a teenager, No, it's
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: like nine the others are.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and Mikeel is a bid teenager, so he is
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: serving this little man. He's he's holding him at let
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: me see, holding him and punching him.
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: One two three after the third one in my got heads.
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: Yeah, and Mike is a boxer, a trained boxer, so
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: he's you know, lighting this to it up and it's
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: one two three a voice from the background, yo's out look.
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: At that little nigga in his ass beat.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: Haha, and then heot some two more times and it
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: is like one of the funniest and just greatest moments
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: in anything.
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: And I've often wondered was it just somebody in the
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: background or was that in the script, like, oh no,
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: I think somebody like the wire.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Those white men were really good at understanding how black
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: people talk, like like like I think of them an
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: incredible level of credit, like they're black people. That's always
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: how they sounded, right like they they always did it.
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: But there was the other one.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: Window boys tried to run name it off the corner.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: They shorted up that cocaine and went to fight David,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: and David was trying to fight that.
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: Dude and had what hand covered his eyes and the
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: other would try to punch.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Oh my god, oh man, Like they nailed exactly what
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: kind of no fighting dude name it will be. I'm
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: just happy that somebody else knows about the look at
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: this little and it sounded like a grow the person. Yes,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: it's a grown man, and he left, ha ha.
- 1:08:30Speaker 7: Like that, ha ha.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: I've watched this show so many times that I knew
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: exactly you were, like, you probably don't know.
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: I'm like, maybe it's kind for a podcast on the
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: way Jones and DJ Benha means man, No, all right.
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: I'm down for that anytime. But I definitely need to
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: be on the ninety six at some point.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: You know what I might have because right now I've
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: been doing it with a man Jason England, a man
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: DJ Widdy Spark. But I may throw me in an
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: episode seven, and if I do, I gotta highlight you o.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: The next episode is gonna be like ninety six. This
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: is the last kind of the last year of boom
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Back Rap in the sense that after that, it's like
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: half the boom bapfers went all the way into scaring
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: the girls music and the other half decided, well, maybe
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: we can make some money and make them dance. Right,
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: But like ninety six is kind of the last year
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: that that there's just a like stakes is high by
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Daylight sold for example, like you could just be in
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: that lane right there in rap It.
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: Kind of after ninety six it kind of ends.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: And then also is the last that's the last year
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: the West Coast was like really cracking. Ooh, it was
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: never really cracking, like them to Tupac Records. The West
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: Side Connection record came out that year. We're gonna ignore
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: that Doctor Dre record that came.
- 1:09:50Speaker 5: Out Wood that was a rash.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: But it's kind of like it kind of wraps up
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: the West Coast thing, and so I may have one
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: a good wrap up to come after that, you know,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: because I think me and you in that same boat
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: Houston dudes who did not exactly grow up on Houston music.
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: Oh man, but you know, but still love it.
- 1:10:10Speaker 7: You know.
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: That's the thing.
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: Like and and like I tell everybody, it's that Houston
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: dudes who grew up in the era when when music
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: sounded different and we were appreciative of everything. So it
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: was like because we bore, like when I got to
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: Howard in the nineties and people are like West Post,
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: you know, and I'm like, it's shit jamming, you know.
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: And I'm like in East Past and jamming and South
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: of Jamin and whatever I'm hearing out of the Midwest
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: is jamming, and it's just like being able. And so
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: that was a bonus for me because I could appreciate
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: all that when people still were like nothing on everything.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: So no, I'm down for it anytime.
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: Yeah, kind of still laughing at Canag getting snuffed snuffed.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: Oh my god, money, I don't just say my other
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: favorite money is my And it goes back to the
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: Omar is when Canard does kill him, Like I'm watching
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: this on DVD, so I've already seen it, you know,
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: probably three times at this point. But it was like
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: I'd been a few years and I rewound that ship. Bro,
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: I'm sitting down there. It might have been the weed whatever,
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: but I rewound it like, yo, you know, nah, that
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: didn't just happen. If I just rewind and ship like.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: You're just gonna make it. The director's cut was gonna start.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: There's another ending.
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: Yeah, if I just rewinding it, can is not gonna
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: shoot over. I don't think you should blame that on
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: the weed, brother, It was just desperation.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: Yeah, like if you started blaming that on the weed,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: I gotta change my attitude about weed.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: I have learned so much more about you but money
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: and these last I've ever known about you, And there's
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: more to go, there's more to listen.
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: We should do it a very bridged version, but I
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: want to do We're gonna do rap with you, rapid fire.
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: Question to answer segment.
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: As you ready, yep, centers won't come up.
- 1:12:15Speaker 8: Favorite superhero movie of all time Dark Knight, hm, Star
- 1:12:20Speaker 8: Wars or Star Trek, Star Wars, Wait a minute, Star
- 1:12:25Speaker 8: Trek because it got Ohora in it?
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: Quite true? Shout out to stuff I will she just
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: wrote a new book.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: If you could walk in the room and have a
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: theme song play, what would it be?
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: Mm hm.
- 1:12:38Speaker 6: Oh such a difficult question.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Sorry, Oh, I would say the Ishka Bible on the
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: West Side Gun album is black thought name check me
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: in it?
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: Oh?
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: Oh so it was a song with you in it?
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: Okay? Yes, what is the rhyme?
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Figly questionable period like Beaumani Joe on Comma, like The
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Secret Silent Investor. No, I can't remember exactly, but it's
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: basically the idea was like like The Silent Investor, nobody
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: really knows right underrated contribution.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: M m okay, I got nervous when you started with
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: some questionable part that was well, yeah, it was.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: The show I was on that was called highly questionable trusting.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: I had the same question at first, but that stuff,
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: But that's the homie, so I'm assuming that it.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: Was assuming it wasn't it. Okay, okay, okay, cool.
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: All right, uh hmm, this is probably gonna be interesting.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: And what character's death hurts you the most in movie, TV, anything?
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: Oh Man playing out the whole four minutes of a
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: change is gonna come before Malcolm Mexican gets snuffed, like
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: you know what's coming. Damn I forgot playing before that. Yeah,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: I mean had to cost a fortune too. Like that's
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: the best use of music in the movie that I
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: can think I have ever seen.
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: Because I remember like when he because I've read the book,
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: you know, I know you don't not, but when he's
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: slot when they do this, bye, yes, you don't have.
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: The change of box to come and not the one
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: I want it.
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: All right, If you're gonna have any one superpower, what
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: would it be invisibility?
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: M hm?
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: Why would you want to be invisible?
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: Sir?
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: You just got somewhat famous.
- 1:14:19Speaker 6: I like to lay low. I'm a I'm a back like.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: I like it to be a pleasant surprise when I
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: pull up at the spot and i'd be lurking at
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: the bag bait. You can think about any room you
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: don't pulled up in that I was in. I'm over
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: there laying low.
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: This is true.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: You do lurk. I will say that you enjoyed as
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: tall as you are, which is wild. You do lurk
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: and pop out.
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: Yes, at the Toby and Nigway show, where you can
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: consider yourself famous at that show because I saw you
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: there and you were like just chilling in the back.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: I was, I was chilling in the back, but I
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: also did was hanging out backstage.
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: Yeah, this is that's right. I brought you with me.
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Yeah, So that's the that's the that's the little bit
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: of an in between. Well, he's a great example. When
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: I first met him, I was famous.
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: That he was not cool, you know, your indeed right
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: when I because when I met him, it was th
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: reef and you know, like he was, you know, like
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: when we met him, it was like, okay, you know
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: we're going Toby anick way and most people have said
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: that would be like who the fuck did you go?
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: See?
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:15:14Speaker 5: And now you know it's a bit different. That's no change.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: He went from making a song about one hundred grand
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: I think to tell you now, yes, correct, I'm still
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: doing those hundergrands. That's still my team talk. Yes, that
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: still sounds great to me. Was a great show too,
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: oh man.
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, fantastic love Toby.
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: Also, just before we do get out here, but Mionni,
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: because you were talking about how long you've been in
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: the game and everything, and I just want to give
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: you your props. I know we don't often do this
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: and tell people this, but I remember when you first
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: popped up on Around the Horn, you know, and I
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: was like, oh ship, you know, new cat on here
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: buck and yeah, you know, basically you know, I came
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: on as a nigga, you know, and I was like, oh,
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: this is a smart ass nigga, you know. And I
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: didn't even know you were from Houston at the time.
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: But you know, you just came on with that energy
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: where and I already loved the show, Don't get me wrong.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: You know it was already the show, but you brought
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: it and you continue to bring it. And really, what
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: is really great about you for me is like you're
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: like someone like young Giru, who I've known since before
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: grew was, you know, when he was just Jamie ed Howard,
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: you know, and now he's young group And I haven't
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: known you as long. You know, you were already on
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: the way up, but I've seen you grow into you know,
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: quite the superstar, and you've always remained the same person.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: So I appreciate that greatly, man, And I tell people
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: around the whole. I don't know if you ever heard
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: of each other story on that, because like, I worked
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: for ESPN as a writer for ESPN dot com from
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: two thousand and six through two thousand and seven, and
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: they did not renew my contract, which is in effect
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: getting fired. Like you know, it's not exactly the same,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: but it's up there and so right right, And so
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: I had a couple of years where I like I
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: worked local radio and I was working satellite radio, and
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: I was getting my situation back together. And I decided
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: at that point, like I had my chance at the show,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: I was never going to get back. So I wasn't
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: trying to get back, you know what I mean. Like
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: I was like, I'm doing the stuff that I do right,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: Like I was. I found my own voice in what
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: I was doing. And I'd always said that if ESPN
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: called me then and I took a job there, because
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: around the Horn I was just a freelancer. But I
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: always said that if it's a good job there, that
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: they were going to have to take me, Like I
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: needed to build myself up to a point where they
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: were not asking me to do what they do, they
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: were going to ask me to do what I do.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: And so I remember the first time I did around
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: the Horn, I had two questions, I mean a question
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: to asked myself, and I said, I could either do
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: this hoping that they called me back, or I could
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: do this as if they're never going to call me back,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: so we might as well just do it. So I
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: really went on and was like, yo, we're doing this
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: for the Hallmies and the chalynd Temple, like this was
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: if I'm only on here. One time I am going
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: to have a ball doing this this one time, and
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: then they call me for the second time and they
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: wanted me to keep doing it like I had done
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: it the first time, and I just kept on doing it,
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: and it was like, like I wasn't It wasn't like
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: an intentional I'm going like I'm I'm.
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: You know, I'm doing it now.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: I was like, no, this is what I do now,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: and I'm going to do what I do and it
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: worked and it propelled everything that I.
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: Got to do after that. So I appreciate you saying that.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: Because when I did it, it really was like I
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: made a video with me doing like a hype video,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: and I had all these different people called in and
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Don King even did like a clip for my video
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: like getting it going.
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: Like I was really the man of the people at
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: the time.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: And so I love looking back on that and hearing
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: people say that because that for me, what you described
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: was very important to me because I was just like
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: I'm going to do it like this, I'm better to
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: work and seemingly it.
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: Did no definitely, Bru And I you know, I congratulate
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: you and thank you, because, like I said, I was
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: sitting home watching and I'd already loved the show.
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: Like to me, Tony is like one of.
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: The greatest like host you know, ever, like I wish
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: you would like, don't want and do like I mean,
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: Late Night doesn't exist in the same way anymore. But
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: I always saw him as like a David Letterman type
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: where he could talk to anyone. I just think he's
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: fucking genius and I just love that he's also you know,
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: a very human person, you know.
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: Yes, he's one of the greatest people I've ever met.
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I believe it.
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: But like I said, when you came on and you
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: brought that energy, you brought that reeal, you brought that blackness,
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: and I mean you came on there you know, Mini Jones,
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: you know, and it was just like this is who
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: I am and.
- 1:19:29Speaker 5: By a tune day, Yeah, that's right fully. Appreciate you
- 1:19:32Speaker 5: for that, man.
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: No, thank you many well.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: At the end of the day, the day got an end.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: For MONI, it's been.
