- 0:15we're covering a few different topics, and they
- 0:17include what went wrong, what do they need, stack
- 0:21or shed, their draft picks, one move i would
- 0:24do in their cap space now in this episode we're
- 0:27talking about the commanders so for all my dmv
- 0:29fans out there make sure you guys go to the forestville

- 0:42can y 'all give me a side order of oatmeal raisin
- 0:44cookies and just have them warm it up just a
- 0:46little bit please thanks let's lock in All right,
- 0:57let's get into it. So what went wrong in the
- 0:58commander season? And I would venture to say
- 1:00it was a regressing offense and defense. Coming
- 1:03into the 25 season, the Commanders had a lot
- 1:05of momentum on their side. For starters, they
- 1:08just finished making an appearance in the NFC
- 1:10Championship. They traded for Laremy Tunsil.
- 1:13They traded for Deebo Samuel. And everybody is
- 1:15thinking that the Commanders are going to repeat
- 1:17what they just finished doing. Instead, what
- 1:20we saw was a regression in both the offense and
- 1:23the defense. So here's the offensive rankings
- 1:25from the 24 offense, according to NFL Pro. They
- 1:28had the 7th ranked offense and they averaged
- 1:3128 .5 points per game, 369 .6 yards per game,
- 1:365 .7 yards per play, and 54 touchdowns. They
- 1:39were 17th in passing offense and they averaged
- 1:42215 .6 passing yards per game, 6 .4 passing yards
- 1:46per play, and 29 passing touchdowns. They were
- 1:493rd in rushing offense and they averaged 154
- 1:53.1 rushing yards per game, 5 rushing yards per
- 1:56play, and 25 rushing touchdowns. Now the 25 offense
- 1:59had the 22nd ranked offense and they averaged
- 2:0220 .9 points per game, 318 .8 yards per game,
- 2:065 .5 yards per play, and 39 touchdowns. They
- 2:09were 24th in passing offense and they averaged
- 2:12184 .1 passing yards per game, 6 .2 passing yards
- 2:16per play, and 19 passing touchdowns. They were
- 2:194th in rushing offense and they averaged 134
- 2:22.7 rushing yards per game, 4 .7 rushing yards
- 2:25per play, and 20 rushing yards per game. Now,
- 2:28I'm not saying that I expected this passing offense
- 2:30to be top five or the best passing offense in
- 2:34the entire league, but you would have thought
- 2:36they would have made a significant step in the
- 2:38right direction. But clearly, that wasn't the
- 2:40case. Now, was it because of the quarterback
- 2:42play? Was it because of the availability of the
- 2:45receivers? Was it because the league itself finally
- 2:49had a game plan to counter Cliff Kingsbury's
- 2:51offense and Jaden Daniels? It's possible, but
- 2:55I don't think nobody expected this offense to
- 2:57go six steps back after going four steps forward.
- 3:00Now, the defensive regression is mainly in part
- 3:03because of the lack of talent that they have
- 3:05on that side of the ball. Now, I understand this
- 3:07veteran -led defense was productive in 24, but
- 3:11I don't think nobody expected the defense to
- 3:13replicate the same thing in 25. Now, they were
- 3:16probably thinking by acquiring Marshawn Lattimore
- 3:18via trade and signing Von Miller via free agency
- 3:22that maybe they'll add a little bit of splash
- 3:25or a little bit of juice to this defense, and
- 3:27clearly that wasn't the case. Now, we can all
- 3:30All admit the Marshawn Lattimore trade was a
- 3:32flop, and that Von Miller at this point in his
- 3:35career needs to be paired up with an elite pass
- 3:38rusher in order for him to be successful. And
- 3:40when we look at some of the stats from those
- 3:42defensive players, this is what we have. Von
- 3:44Miller had 9 sacks, 28 pressures, and a 10 .3
- 3:48% pressure rate. Dorian Armstrong had 5 .5 sacks,
- 3:5220 pressures, and a 15 .5 % pressure rate. Jake
- 3:56Martin had 5 .5 sacks. 43 pressures, and 11 .1
- 4:01% pressure rate. Jajar Newton had 5 sacks, 23
- 4:05pressures, and a 10 .8 % pressure rate. Bobby
- 4:08Wagner had 3 .5 sacks, 17 pressures, and a 23
- 4:12.3 % pressure rate. Now I was expecting more
- 4:15production from this defense, but clearly my
- 4:17expectations are too high. Now let's continue
- 4:20to paint this picture. When we look at the 24
- 4:22defense, they had the 13th ranked defense, and
- 4:25they allowed 23 points per game, 326 .9 yards
- 4:29per game, 5 .4 yards per play, and 43 touchdowns.
- 4:33They were third in passing defense, and they
- 4:35allowed 189 .5 passing yards per game, 6 passing
- 4:40yards per play, and 25 passing touchdowns. They
- 4:42were 30th in run defense, and they allowed 18
- 4:45rushing touchdowns, 137 .5 rushing yards per
- 4:49game, and 4. rushing yards per play now if we
- 4:52compare that to the 25 defense this is what we
- 4:55have they were the worst defense in the league
- 4:57and they allowed 26 .5 points per game 384 .3
- 5:02yards per game six yards per play and 51 touchdowns
- 5:05they were 28th and pass defense and they allowed
- 5:08242 .5 passing yards per game 7 .1 passing yards
- 5:13per play and 33 passing touchdowns they were
- 5:1530th and run defense and they allowed 18 rushing
- 5:18touchdowns 100 141 .8 rushing yards per game
- 5:22and 4 .8 rushing yards per play. Now with that
- 5:25being said, what do the commanders need? And
- 5:27that is more offensive production and creativity
- 5:29and more defensive playmakers. Now, by promoting
- 5:33David Blau to offensive coordinator, I do believe
- 5:36the commanders are making the first step in the
- 5:38right direction. Now, I'm not expecting this
- 5:40offense to be productive or creative like the
- 5:4249ers or the Chiefs, but I do expect for them
- 5:45to be different in some capacity. Now, that all
- 5:48depends on what the commanders do with this offense.
- 5:51If they can extend Deebo Samuel and Larimi Tunsil,
- 5:54maybe trade for Brandon Iyuk or sign him if the
- 5:5749ers release him, and then maybe go after a
- 6:00productive tight end in the draft, I think that's
- 6:02a step in the right direction. However, if the
- 6:04Commanders do none of these things, then we need
- 6:06to have an honest conversation about Adam Peters
- 6:09and Dan Quinn. Because at this point, going into
- 6:11next season, they're on the hot seat right now.
- 6:14I understand they started their tenure hot. I
- 6:17understand that the fan base and ownership wants
- 6:19them to go back to being in the NFC Championship.
- 6:22And I understand that's hard. But at the same
- 6:25time, you have to show that this team is heading
- 6:27in the right direction. Now, getting more defensive
- 6:30playmakers is an easy fix. And the reason why
- 6:33I say this is because you have a lot of cap space
- 6:36and you have a decent amount of draft picks.
- 6:38So whatever you don't get in the draft or free
- 6:40agency, you just get it in the other phase. It's
- 6:43a very simple fix. So if that means that you
- 6:46address pass rushers high up in the draft, that
- 6:48means that you can address corner and free agency
- 6:50or interior defensive linemen or linebacker,
- 6:53however you want to do it. Now, with that being
- 6:56said, the question we all need to ask ourselves
- 6:57is stack or shed. And I will eventually say stack.
- 7:01And the reason why I say this is because you
- 7:03have your franchise quarterback. Build off of
- 7:05that. As long as you don't continue to go after
- 7:08these old, past their prime veterans, I think
- 7:11you're going to be in a good spot. But if you
- 7:13continue to go down that road, you are playing
- 7:16with fire. We saw what the Bengals did when Joe
- 7:20Burrow was on his rookie deal. They built that
- 7:22team up, and they went on a Super Bowl run, and
- 7:25they went to a couple AFC championships. The
- 7:28Commanders can do the exact same thing. But it
- 7:30all depends on what you do in this offseason.
- 7:33Because this is a very pivotal offseason, not
- 7:35just for Adam Peters, but for Dan Quinn and everybody
- 7:39else that is on this coaching staff. When we
- 7:41look at their draft picks, they have their first,
- 7:43their third, their fifth, two sixth round picks,
- 7:46and a seventh round pick, which isn't bad. You're
- 7:48also in a really good spot in the first round.
- 7:50So you can get one of the top players in whatever
- 7:53position you're trying to address. Now with that
- 7:56being said, the one move that I would do is draft
- 7:59a defensive player. Now me personally, I think
- 8:01the commander should address the secondary or
- 8:03edge rusher in the first round. Now whoever falls
- 8:06when it's time for you to make your pick, go
- 8:08for it. If it's Caleb Downs, do it. If it's Arvo
- 8:12Reese, even though I don't think that's going
- 8:13to happen, do it. If it's Sonny Styles, do it.
- 8:16Looking at the Commander's cap situation, they
- 8:18have $79 .2 million for now. And that's in part
- 8:21because the NFL has informed all teams that everyone
- 8:24is getting $22 million added to their cap space.
- 8:27Meaning that the Commanders can be big spenders
- 8:30in all three ways of free agency. My expectation
- 8:33is the Commanders will go after players such
- 8:35as Lloyd Cushenberry, Devin Lloyd, Adafio Way,
- 8:38Boye Mafe, Tyreek Woolen, maybe make a trade
- 8:41for someone, maybe try to go after Brandon Ayuk,
- 8:44depending on how that situation goes. I think
- 8:46all of those options are on the table right now.
- 8:50But only time will tell. But I'm going to end
