- 0:00Speaker 1: Thanks Zachlin fiel back in the studio, turning the Dows tonight.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Thanks to both Tomasinio and Jake Roshart for joining us,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and of course to Colin to hooking up the interviews
- 0:10Speaker 1: as I always appreciate that final segment here with Mike.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm here with Adam Jardino as well, and I want
- 0:15Speaker 1: to take a few extra minutes because it was about
- 0:16Speaker 1: a month ago, Mike, on the unfortunate, terrible news that
- 0:19Speaker 1: one of your former players, Johnny Gadro and his brother
- 0:22Speaker 1: matt were killed in a accident with a drunk driver
- 0:25Speaker 1: while riding their bikes getting ready for their sister to
- 0:28Speaker 1: get married. And I know you coached Johnny at BC
- 0:31Speaker 1: and recruited Matthew as well before coming here to stores.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Just give me some thoughts of what Johnny meant to you,
- 0:37Speaker 1: because I know the text that we sent you were
- 0:39Speaker 1: it was a gut punch, and obviously it was to
- 0:40Speaker 1: a lot of people.
- 0:41Speaker 2: But tell me about your relationship with him.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I was. It was definitely shocking. Unfortunately it was
- 0:49Speaker 3: the second time it happened this summer because another Philly boy,
- 0:53Speaker 3: Tony Voss, passed away of a heart attack. And he
- 0:56Speaker 3: was only forty three, So it was I went to
- 0:59Speaker 3: Philly twice for funerals this summer, which I shouldn't have
- 1:02Speaker 3: to be doing with former players, and then Johnny and Maddie.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Thing was so tragic in just so many ways. And
- 1:10Speaker 3: he was really an artist on the ice. You didn't
- 1:14Speaker 3: coach Johnny. You just opened the door and let him
- 1:16Speaker 3: go because the stuff he did you can't really teach.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And he wasn't that big no no, but.
- 1:23Speaker 3: He couldn't hit him. I've always said he was such
- 1:25Speaker 3: a unique player. People try to say what kind of
- 1:28Speaker 3: player was. He's kind of like to me, reminded me
- 1:31Speaker 3: a lot of Gretzky in a little different ways, Like
- 1:33Speaker 3: he could score, he could pass, He saw the game
- 1:37Speaker 3: just differently than everybody else, and like I said, it's
- 1:40Speaker 3: stuff that you can't teach. And always was smiling, you know.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I saw him last summer at Kevin Hayes's wedding and
- 1:48Speaker 3: was great catching up with him, and I'd met his
- 1:51Speaker 3: wife and he was so happy to be a dad.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And it's just tragic in so many ways.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I think earlier in this show we had talked about,
- 2:00Speaker 2: you know, a Hudson Chandor right, He's not a pro
- 2:03Speaker 2: prospect so to speak. Johnny Gudrou was a fourth round
- 2:06Speaker 2: pick before doing everything that he did at Boston College.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So for him as a player, just how does that
- 2:13Speaker 2: translate to who he was as a person where maybe
- 2:16Speaker 2: underestimated but ultimately came out and was a heck of
- 2:20Speaker 2: a hockey player.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah. I think by the time he got to BC,
- 2:26Speaker 3: especially after his freshman year, I don't know how much
- 2:29Speaker 3: doubt there was of him going to play in the NHL.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I don't know if people necessarily thought he was going
- 2:36Speaker 3: to be the superstar he was in the NHL, and
- 2:38Speaker 3: I think he made seven straight All Star Games and
- 2:41Speaker 3: you know it was one hundred point guy, and he's
- 2:45Speaker 3: arguably one of the best Americans and you know during
- 2:49Speaker 3: that stretch. Yeah, so yeah, I think though he kept
- 2:54Speaker 3: proving everybody wrong at every level he went to. And
- 2:59Speaker 3: it's just like I said, I'm mis watching his creativity
- 3:02Speaker 3: and his brilliance on the ice.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Mike, I would trust it. Hockey East and the teams
- 3:06Speaker 1: in Hockeys would probably do something in his honor on
- 3:09Speaker 1: Opening Night.
- 3:09Speaker 3: I would think, you know, I was just out at
- 3:12Speaker 3: the USHL and they did something. I just read today
- 3:15Speaker 3: that I think every NHL team is wearing something in
- 3:18Speaker 3: honor of Johnny and Maddie. So I would imagine the
- 3:23Speaker 3: Hockey East would.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Do something Transitioning away from that, just looking at the
- 3:28Speaker 2: coaching staff and Nick Perusi is somebody that you guys
- 3:31Speaker 2: have brought in from Northern Michigan and you've got some
- 3:35Speaker 2: Northern Michigan guys suddenly on the Yukon rosters. So how
- 3:39Speaker 2: does all of that transition and come to be for
- 3:43Speaker 2: him joining the staff.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Well, it was a situation where you know Mike Pereira,
- 3:48Speaker 3: who did a really nice job for us, he got
- 3:50Speaker 3: the head coaching job at CHOT and I was certainly
- 3:53Speaker 3: supportive of that for him. I think anytime you can
- 3:56Speaker 3: become a head coach, I think you got to really
- 3:58Speaker 3: look at those opportunities. And so that opened up a
- 4:01Speaker 3: spot on our staff, and you know, I was looking around.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I asked a couple of people and someone had recommended
- 4:07Speaker 3: Nick to me. I didn't know him that, I didn't
- 4:08Speaker 3: know him at all. Yeah, and then met him down
- 4:10Speaker 3: the convention. I really liked him and I saw where
- 4:13Speaker 3: they had a top recruiting class and that was something
- 4:16Speaker 3: that also impressed me. So after meeting him and seeing
- 4:22Speaker 3: what type of person he was and his philosophy on recruiting,
- 4:25Speaker 3: it was very similar to how I think, and it
- 4:28Speaker 3: just became a good fit. And with that, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 3: the whole staff left at Northern Michigan, so pretty much
- 4:34Speaker 3: every player opened up and we were able fortunate to
- 4:36Speaker 3: get a couple of them.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Mike, you also have a new director of hockey ops,
- 4:39Speaker 1: Joey Ferriss moved on to bigger and better things. Is
- 4:42Speaker 1: it Jacob Pollock?
- 4:44Speaker 3: Yes, you know, I worked with his dad at BC.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I've known well, I remember Jacob when he was born,
- 4:51Speaker 3: but his dad and I worked together for a long
- 4:53Speaker 3: time at Bowling Green and at Boston College. And Jacob
- 4:56Speaker 3: I wanted someone with some experience in hockey ops and
- 4:59Speaker 3: he was a I mean, ironically enough, he was the
- 5:02Speaker 3: hockey ops guy at Colgate about three or four years ago,
- 5:05Speaker 3: so it was just seemed like a good fit.
- 5:08Speaker 1: All right, speaking of Colgate, their first up. One of
- 5:11Speaker 1: your thoughts on Colgate, what do you know about him
- 5:13Speaker 1: other than I know you played them open the weekend
- 5:14Speaker 1: last yeason up there.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Well, I think Mike's done a nice job he's a former.
- 5:18Speaker 3: He was a great player at Colgate, and you know,
- 5:20Speaker 3: they've always had he's done. The power play last year
- 5:23Speaker 3: was really really good, and they get i know, four
- 5:25Speaker 3: or five players back that were on that power play,
- 5:28Speaker 3: So imagine that's going to be really strong. You know,
- 5:32Speaker 3: they'll have some new goaltending, but so do we. And
- 5:36Speaker 3: you know, but they have some players back, you know,
- 5:39Speaker 3: Irwin on defense and Bergsland. I think LaBelle up front,
- 5:43Speaker 3: Panetta de Paulo, they've got some they gets great size
- 5:47Speaker 3: and Chorski. They've got some players that are pretty talented.
- 5:51Speaker 3: And when it's the first game of the year, it's
- 5:53Speaker 3: really hard to pre scout. So I think we're just
- 5:55Speaker 3: gonna have to go out and really focus on what
- 5:57Speaker 3: we do well.
- 5:58Speaker 2: First four games of the season, two against Colgate, two
- 6:00Speaker 2: against Totly Cross. For the returning guys, that's similar setup
- 6:03Speaker 2: to how the season started last year, so there shouldn't
- 6:05Speaker 2: be any extra motivation. I don't think to say, you know, no,
- 6:09Speaker 2: these are not Hockey East games to start the year,
- 6:12Speaker 2: but every single game is important.
- 6:14Speaker 3: It is if you want to make the national tournament,
- 6:16Speaker 3: you have to have a good non league record. It's
- 6:17Speaker 3: playing and simple. You can't go three and seven unless
- 6:21Speaker 3: you win your league. You're not going to go three
- 6:23Speaker 3: and seven in the you know, with your ten non
- 6:25Speaker 3: league games and make the tournament. So the games are
- 6:28Speaker 3: all very, very important when it comes to making the
- 6:31Speaker 3: national tournament.
- 6:31Speaker 1: At the end of the year, Mike could still be
- 6:33Speaker 1: CBU at the top, correct.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I would think, so. I think they probably bringing the
- 6:37Speaker 3: most back both of those teams. I think Providence is
- 6:40Speaker 3: going to be pretty strong, Maine's going to be pretty strong,
- 6:43Speaker 3: so you know it's going to be very competitive.
- 6:45Speaker 1: League always is, Michael, is always a pleasure. We'll talk
- 6:48Speaker 1: to your Friday night for the game.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, before I go, I'd like to know my
- 6:51Speaker 3: son's birthday today, so I'd like to wish Quinn a
- 6:54Speaker 3: happy birthday and be remiss if I didn't mention my
- 6:57Speaker 3: brother in law too, they share a birthday.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Very good, Michael, Thank you, Go.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Bick bloop all right, go kick well not nockey.
