- 0:01Welcome into a very exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:04I am your host Bubba Starts, and with me today are three of the coolest dudes that I'm gonna
- 0:08talk to today.
- 0:10Why don't you guys go ahead and introduce yourselves?
- 0:11I forgot everyone's name.
- 0:13Sure thing.
- 0:13My name is Nick Anderson.
- 0:14It's a pleasure to be here.
- 0:16We are the skinner the skinny lovers, and, we got a great gig coming up and wanted to chat
- 0:21with you about our band.
- 0:24Hell, yeah.
- 0:25That's awesome.
- 0:26The skinny lovers.
- 0:27You know what?
- 0:27The ladies say that they're the best.
- 0:31That's right.
- 0:33That's right.
- 0:33You guys wanna introduce yourselves?
- 0:35Tell them why we're the best?
- 0:38Go ahead, Ian.
- 0:41Well, many shows I've been told I have the biggest biceps of any drummer in the world, so
- 0:49that's one reason why we're the best.
- 0:52You know, Jeff's pretty cool.
- 0:54He has, a a large neon mohawk.
- 0:56That's that's, like, decent, but I'm pretty sure the biceps are moving ladies over.
- 1:00So Ladies love the guns, Ian.
- 1:02So what, what kind of music do you guys do?
- 1:10Well, Jeff, you wanna introduce yourself and answer that question as well?
- 1:14Sure.
- 1:15I'm Jeff.
- 1:16I am the bass player extraordinaire.
- 1:18And, what makes this band great is that I was prom king two thousand six, Phenomni, Michigan.
- 1:26Which brings me to this picture.
- 1:28Right here, we got a tweet from El Jefe of no effects saying to Jeff, hey, Jeff.
- 1:34Congratulations on being prom king.
- 1:37And that is a real tweet that El Jefe from no effects, the punk band, sent Jeff.
- 1:43Jeff sent back, thank you, with a picture of him as prom king two thousand six.
- 1:49And right there, that is the principal's daughter.
- 1:54Nice, Jeff.
- 1:55Nice.
- 1:56Kudos to you, sir.
- 1:58I was the only one that year.
- 2:01Anyhoo, as far as our music goes, I would say it's a good eclectic mix of rock and roll, punk
- 2:08rock, folk rock, and just three good looking dudes.
- 2:13Awesome.
- 2:14A trio.
- 2:16That's right.
- 2:17That's right.
- 2:18Just the three of us.
- 2:19Yeah.
- 2:19Typically, that's how I, that's how I play with my band starts and ends.
- 2:24Keep it simple, but it's a lot of pressure, man.
- 2:27You you don't have that five, six piece band to kinda all lean on each other when somebody had
- 2:31too many cocktails or, you know, it's, it's a lot more difficult to to just ride a trio, but
- 2:38it speaks to the powerhouse that you guys must be and the connection that you have as
- 2:43musicians.
- 2:44How long y'all been playing together?
- 2:46We've been playing together let's see.
- 2:48Has it been thirteen years, guys, total?
- 2:52Well, if you count
- 2:52our old band.
- 2:54Yeah.
- 2:54Just the total we've been playing music together, I think, has been thirteen years.
- 2:57We've been in this band for just about ten years together.
- 3:00We're in a band before this, for for a couple of years as well.
- 3:07And, where are you guys based out of?
- 3:08I know, Ian called me from a, Wisconsin number, but
- 3:14Yep.
- 3:14Yep.
- 3:14We're based
- 3:15out Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
- 3:18Okay.
- 3:18So right there on the border.
- 3:19You guys know Samantha Grimes?
- 3:22Heard of her.
- 3:23She's a she's a member of the Midwest Country Music Organization with me, and she's actually,
- 3:27one of my founding members of the Midwest original music organization now.
- 3:32Okay.
- 3:32Moe.
- 3:33So, yeah, we're, she's out in that area, I know, and a a pretty big deal from what I hear.
- 3:39Yeah.
- 3:40I've seen her name quite often.
- 3:44Sure.
- 3:45Sure.
- 3:46Yeah.
- 3:46Absolutely.
- 3:47Yeah.
- 3:47I've seen her name all over the place.
- 3:48So Killer.
- 3:49So you guys said you got a big show coming up.
- 3:51Let's talk about the show.
- 3:53Yeah.
- 3:53That's right.
- 3:54So we're playing at the Green Room, with the modern era, and, we're playing with a few
- 3:58others as well.
- 4:00And, that show is going to be on Saturday, April 26.
- 4:07So it's us, the skinny lovers, the modern era, Clayton Ryan, Jay Bell, and the lazy Susan band
- 4:13at Green Room in Minneapolis.
- 4:15And funny story about the modern era that's on there.
- 4:18We were in our previous band.
- 4:20They were saying we used to play in a band together.
- 4:23Jeff and I were in a band that played with the modern era, and the cops came, said we were too
- 4:29loud, shut the whole show down.
- 4:31So we had they told everyone they had to leave.
- 4:34So everyone kinda hid for a little bit, and then they came back out, and we played an
- 4:37acoustic show with no amps at all, just playing our acoustic guitars.
- 4:43And I'm not sure what happened after that, but I woke up with Jeff sleeping on top of me on a
- 4:49couch.
- 4:50And I don't know what happened between those two moments.
- 4:52Rock, baby.
- 4:53I love it.
- 4:54But there was one couch to sleep on four of us.
- 4:57So
- 4:58Jeff's like, I'm not sleeping on the bottom.
- 5:01Not today.
- 5:03I was prom king.
- 5:05I I deserve better.
- 5:09So Oh my god.
- 5:10So home sleeping sound.
- 5:12Little, little inside baseball.
- 5:15Clayton Ryan's a good friend of mine, y'all.
- 5:17Okay.
- 5:18Absolutely.
- 5:19And, I feel like I just met the Lazy Susan band as well.
- 5:23We haven't met them yet.
- 5:25Yeah.
- 5:25I feel like I was just on a on a on a call with them recently too.
- 5:30I'm gonna have to go back through my notes and look around.
- 5:34I do so many of these things, guys.
- 5:35It's just like pages upon page of people and bands, and it all kinda blends together.
- 5:41We'll see.
- 5:42Who knows?
- 5:43What'd you write down about us so far?
- 5:45Good looking.
- 5:46Jay Bell.
- 5:46Yeah.
- 5:47Jay Bell and the lazy Susan band.
- 5:48Look at that.
- 5:49We I'm a have to call Clayton back and get him on too.
- 5:53And, yeah, we'll do everybody on the show before the show, and that's what this is.
- 5:57Right?
- 5:58I mean, the scene projects, like I said, I'm a songwriter, band myself.
- 6:02You know, how it kind of started was that I did the South Dakota media tour in, five minutes.
- 6:08Right?
- 6:08I did the two podcasts around.
- 6:10I did the local news station.
- 6:12I did the local radio, and I was like, okay.
- 6:14That was it.
- 6:15And it brought me almost no new listeners.
- 6:17Right?
- 6:18And I was like, man, because nobody was out there really, like, pushing their podcast.
- 6:21It was all kind of hobbyist, and the news channel really doesn't care about you.
- 6:24They have you on, and then you're done.
- 6:26You get your five minutes of fame.
- 6:27See you later.
- 6:29And it was just like, oh, we could do better.
- 6:31So then I started, just talking to my friends, and and now it's grown into this.
- 6:35Now we do the showcases.
- 6:36We have a showcase actually up there at River Rock Studios, April second to where, yeah,
- 6:42we're filming everything HD broadcast video, making it look really good, and then providing
- 6:46that material back to the artist at a lot lower price point than what they could ever do on
- 6:51their own.
- 6:52Right?
- 6:52So by me organizing and doing all, like, the hard work that most musicians aren't good at at
- 6:57all and bringing it all together.
- 6:59Right?
- 7:00And then just like you show up, deliver a twenty minute showcase, play your heart out,
- 7:04and then at the end, here you go.
- 7:06And not only is it going out on my network, but you have all of this to chop up into your own
- 7:11YouTube and social media content, and and you can turn that twenty minutes into freaking 20
- 7:16different pieces of content, three new singles, three music videos.
- 7:20And yeah.
- 7:20So I'm trying to get out there and kinda sell this idea.
- 7:23You know, I kind of I built the Midwest original music organization for the purpose of
- 7:29kind of bringing people into my world so I can explain this stuff a little bit better.
- 7:34And then you I'm not just a guy out there shouting on the street going, give me your
- 7:37money, and I'll give you this.
- 7:38Like, no.
- 7:39Come into my world, you know, and we offer a free lifetime membership for our first hundred
- 7:43and fifty, members that jumped in the Facebook group.
- 7:46We haven't really figured out what the subscription model looks like yet.
- 7:49We're kinda working through that in the moment and just kinda building it out.
- 7:52But to make stuff affordable, to help us out, to help everyone, it's kind of a mastermind.
- 7:57Right?
- 7:57The business world, that's what they call it.
- 8:00We're we're just gonna put all these creative people together, and we're gonna see what the
- 8:03hell happens.
- 8:04And I think, you know, it's like a little bit of art class.
- 8:07It's a little bit of a brotherly love, if you will.
- 8:11Maybe not as close as the couch boys, but we all might get there one day.
- 8:17So why don't you before I let you get out of here, because I don't have a ton of time and I
- 8:20was late, I apologize.
- 8:22Full disclosure, Bubba Starts is not the most professional podcaster on the planet.
- 8:26Shouldn't have wait to our meeting today.
- 8:28But, yeah, shout out to, you know, your YouTube page and all that stuff to let people know how
- 8:33they can find you.
- 8:35Absolutely.
- 8:35So if you search the skinny lovers on Google, do not do an image search.
- 8:40But if you search just under regular, you'll find us.
- 8:45You'll find our YouTube.
- 8:46You'll find everything.
- 8:48If you do the image search, there's a lot of stuff about us sleeping together on that couch.
- 8:53But, yeah, just do a Google search, the skinny lovers.
- 8:58Otherwise, if you're on any music listening platform, we're in a brand change right now.
- 9:03So you can search the skinny lovers.
- 9:04You might find us.
- 9:05Otherwise, Nick Anderson, skinny lovers.
- 9:07We're doing a brand change over from Nick Anderson over to the skinny lovers.
- 9:13We decided since the prom king was in the band that I actually wasn't important enough to be
- 9:17You're back on the bottom, Nick.
- 9:18Yeah.
- 9:19Yeah.
- 9:19So That was good.
- 9:22Man, I appreciate you guys.
- 9:24Shout out the show one more time and where people can get tickets for that.
- 9:27Absolutely.
- 9:28So the show is at the Green Room in Minneapolis on Saturday, April 26.
- 9:33You can get tickets at greenroomm,nasinMinnesota,.com.
- 9:39And tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
- 9:44There you go.
- 9:45Buy them in advance, save a little bit of money.
- 9:47Now for me, like, I'm a South Dakota boy.
- 9:50My town's a thousand people.
- 9:51Right?
- 9:51I live in a tiny little town, middle of the cornfields out here.
- 9:54It's a big deal for me to go up.
- 9:56You know?
- 9:56I don't know if I spoke about the battle of the bands.
- 9:58I can't remember all the shit that I say all the time.
- 10:01But, that, you know, for me to come up there and play is a big deal.
- 10:05Right?
- 10:06Now is that the same for people that are from the Euclair?
- 10:09I know you're a lot closer to the city, so you probably get to play there a little bit more.
- 10:12But is it a big deal for you guys to go and play a venue like the Green Room?
- 10:16Absolutely.
- 10:16Yeah.
- 10:17Do you guys wanna answer that?
- 10:18I've been talking a lot.
- 10:20No.
- 10:20I would say it's definitely a big deal every time we're in the cities.
- 10:23It's a whole different energy, whole different vibe.
- 10:27And, hey, I lived in North Dakota for a while, so I know that small town feel.
- 10:31Yeah, brother.
- 10:32I mean, yeah, I'm pretty famous in my town of a thousand people, but I'm nobody when I step up
- 10:36there.
- 10:36And hence why, you know, we kinda talked about a collaboration we're doing with the Saint Paul
- 10:40Bears to kinda bring them with us to the battle of bands just to be different.
- 10:44Right?
- 10:45And I'm hiring all local guys to play with me too.
- 10:47I literally got on some of our Facebook groups and we're just like, I need a bass player.
- 10:51I need a drummer.
- 10:52You know, guy, Dan Anderson.
- 10:54I don't know if you guys are familiar with Dan, but he hit me up to play bass.
- 10:57I was like, got a bass player, but there's a saxophone in your profile picture.
- 11:00Would you be interested in playing sax, you know, and and coming in on this thing?
- 11:05And let's see what happens.
- 11:07You know?
- 11:07And I'm not coming up for a participation trophy.
- 11:10I'm thrilled to be there and to be invited, but I'm coming to win that $10,000.
- 11:14Yeah.
- 11:15Dan Anderson's actually my brother.
- 11:17Shut the fuck up.
- 11:18No.
- 11:19I'm just fucking with you.
- 11:20That's great.
- 11:22Man, I love you guys.
- 11:23Unfortunately, I'm gonna be on the other side of South Dakota for a show, on that twenty
- 11:28sixth, so I won't see you then.
- 11:30But I hope to catch up with you guys soon and catch a show, and I'll be checking all your
- 11:33stuff out online, man.
- 11:35Worries.
- 11:35Skinny lovers, thanks for being part of the scene.
- 11:38Absolutely.
- 11:39Thanks for having us, man.
- 11:40You bet.
- 11:40Thank you.
