- 0:45Welcome back. The boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:50My name is Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian Sigler, buddy.
- 0:54We are back finally on game week.
- 1:00We have a game. This Friday.
- 1:03It's actually happening. How you feeling buddy?
- 1:05It's been what eight long months of no hokey football and it is
- 1:11back this Friday. 7 p.m. ESPN you on a Friday night.
- 1:18I'm just so glad it's back, man. It's been so much fun this week
- 1:21doing the old hat of Looking at data looking at Players talking
- 1:25with you about shit shooting the breeze and knowing that it's
- 1:29back. Regardless what happens?
- 1:31The Hokies are back on the field Friday night and me and I can't
- 1:35wait. Yeah, it's gonna be nice to
- 1:37finally have some actual stuff to argue about.
- 1:41That's actually on the record and not speculative, right?
- 1:46Like we feel like the between the timeline between the chats
- 1:50between you nobody's at work. Work, things like that.
- 1:53Like, we've been talking speculatively about what these
- 1:57Hoagies can do. We're about to finally have some
- 1:59real stuff to talk about and it was kind of good to kind of get
- 2:03back into that flow of watching the tape.
- 2:06Breaking it down, seeing what the opponents are all about.
- 2:10Looking at the data to see if we can, you know, peel the onion
- 2:13back a little bit on the who the monarchs are and how the Hokies
- 2:16can go about putting them down. Absolutely.
- 2:19That's the fun part in. This is the fun part of our
- 2:21season from Now until December because the content rights
- 2:25itself, we have to do the research, we have to figure out
- 2:29the data points, where they're not good, where they're bad or
- 2:33where we're speculating their good and bad.
- 2:35Because right now, all we have to look at is the 2021 season,
- 2:38which we were peeling back from looking at tape, looking at
- 2:40data, and then going into this. But before we get deepen that
- 2:45tonight because Know, The Enemy is coming up in a little while,
- 2:48here, we do have Hokies news and notes and Ryan, when this tweet
- 2:53dropped, last week, we had gotten the winds, we had gotten
- 2:57the winds that it was going to happen, we felt it and it's
- 3:00coming. It was kind of Return of the
- 3:03lunch pail to Virginia check that tweet that went out with JC
- 3:10in jgw and Xavier and Pearson all speaking to what it meant to
- 3:14them. And then seeing some of the
- 3:16highlights of those guys playing, like it just it just
- 3:20got you this warm fuzzy feeling inside.
- 3:23At least it did me. Yeah, I was right there with you
- 3:26man. It feels like a I mean we talked
- 3:29about the prior has been a culture, hire a big-time culture
- 3:34higher, and there's no bigger emblem of the Virginia Tech
- 3:38culture than the lunch pail in the lunch pail defense, correct.
- 3:43Bringing that back. Was a no brainer price.
- 3:45Said it was a no-brainer and it's something that's been in
- 3:47the works since he was hired. I'm glad they kind of saved it,
- 3:52kept it. Kept it under wraps for as long
- 3:54as they could and unveiled it when they did.
- 3:57It was a good way to kind of roll into the season with a
- 4:00little bit of extra hype a little bit extra juice juice
- 4:03and, and I'm excited, and I'm excited about what that means
- 4:06for this defense. I mean, you know, we can talk
- 4:10about it all. We want to about, you know, it's
- 4:13just a lunch pail, but I think It's what it stands for and what
- 4:19that can do in terms of motivation for your play and
- 4:22motivation, for your work, ethic and things like that.
- 4:25When you have that type of tradition, people, take it
- 4:28seriously, and that can Elevate their work that can Elevate
- 4:31their play. It is a mentality.
- 4:34Yeah, it is mentality. And I know here in prodded a
- 4:37speak at the presser about, it's always been a thing for the
- 4:40defense, but I think if we look in the history of Virginia Tech,
- 4:43the lunch pail is a mentality for the whole team.
- 4:47It was a for the you no offense back as we were coming up when
- 4:51we used to just rode great people and put people into
- 4:55misery or hit them with a high-fly play.
- 4:58After you beating them down or the block ponds or Beamer ball.
- 5:02So, it was, it's that mentality across the whole team.
- 5:05And if you can remember like one of the old traditions were when
- 5:09you went on the field or when you went to someone else's place
- 5:13in one, you took the lunch pail to the Middlefield you dug out a
- 5:17big chunk of it. You threw it in there because
- 5:19you claim their Turf, that mentality is something I love
- 5:24something else, I loved and I think having guys on the staff,
- 5:29two guys that were part. When that lunch pail first
- 5:31appeared, 27 years ago in 1995 and again, it gets you kind of
- 5:35emotional and think about it was when Pearson Prelude, one of the
- 5:39all-time hooky Greeks Comes in gets the lunch pail talks about
- 5:43it and presents it to tomorrow. Connor to be the holder for this
- 5:47year like that, that if you didn't have some onions watching
- 5:51that it's tough to say. If you're Virginia Tech pain, if
- 5:55you know, what Pearson was to the program and how big of an
- 5:58impact he had. Yeah, it's a big deal and I
- 6:02know, you know, we saw people talk about on the timeline that
- 6:05world that offensive side of it to like you were talking about,
- 6:08you know, Dwight was saying, you know, it was a mentality.
- 6:11That we all had, even though it wasn't, you know, a lunch pail
- 6:14offense, was lunch pail defense. We had that mentality, but we
- 6:17also knew that, you know, as the offense, you know, that lunch
- 6:22pail defense could pick us up. Yeah, when things weren't
- 6:25weren't going quite the way we want to.
- 6:27And I think that mentality knowing that defense has that
- 6:32mentality for you that can help the offensive mentality as well
- 6:35as a. Okay, well, we don't got to get
- 6:37all of them. We just got to get the ones that
- 6:39count. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 6:42So big thing, big motivational kind of done it.
- 6:45A really good point in time as they get into that game week,
- 6:49sort of the unveiling of that and seeing everybody speak to it
- 6:54and knowing the history behind it.
- 6:56All right, let's flip over real quick.
- 6:57Couple injury notes. Benji guy Snail out for the
- 7:00season. Matt Johnson out for the season.
- 7:03Benji. Done really hurt sucks.
- 7:07You tours his other sucks. It looks like it could
- 7:10potentially be another torn ACL. You know usually you hear one
- 7:15go. A lot of times that other one
- 7:16blows out or sand. Achilles only year that also the
- 7:20walk on Matt Johnson out here from Deep Run price.
- 7:23Said it. Got we expect to be on special
- 7:25teams contributor out for the seasons.
- 7:27Well, not specified. Benji's wasn't specified either.
- 7:30I'm speculating either ACL or Achilles because usually, when
- 7:34you hear, One go you here injury and you here season ended.
- 7:38It's usually the other of the Achilles blew out.
- 7:41Yep. Yeah, I mean it happens often
- 7:44times because you know you're compensating for the one and
- 7:46next thing you know, the other one goes, you know, thankfully
- 7:50it's not the same one I'm Toby and generally in generally, you
- 7:58know, once you have those ACLS generally, once they're back
- 8:03there, they're a little more solid than they were the first.
- 8:05Go round so yeah, let's hope that's the case for him.
- 8:09Speedy recovery to both of those gentlemen, but again, two guys
- 8:14that were going to be minimal to sub minimal contributors for the
- 8:192022 season. Probably hurts more with Johnson
- 8:22than anything. Probably having a guy like him
- 8:24out there that on a special teams unit.
- 8:27Probably more than Gaza know who may have found the red shirt
- 8:29regardless this year. All right, something else kind
- 8:32of talked about last week that caught my eye eye, man.
- 8:35Like that was Brent Pride. Discussing with the Gameday Ops
- 8:39are going to look like on the defensive side of the ball and
- 8:41getting a little into the offensive side of the ball.
- 8:44Defensively. He said straight up along with
- 8:46himself, obviously Chris Marvel in the field.
- 8:50Derrick Jones on the field Jayceon dip.
- 8:54Any, any shock seeing that? I mean, know you got you got one
- 8:59guy at each level of the the defense out there, so that just
- 9:02makes sense. All right, that's a, that's a
- 9:04guy on the field that can talk specifically to each level.
- 9:07The defense get them where they need to be.
- 9:11And then also obviously I feel like defensive coordinators have
- 9:15a better feel for the game when they're calling it from the
- 9:18sidelines. Yeah that's a big thing.
- 9:20Even though we know prize going to be calling it most of the
- 9:23time, I'm sure there's going to be input with more of there.
- 9:28I think having a guy like JC on the sidelines is Big because JC
- 9:32is a fire guy you know kind of like tap was before you know
- 9:37kind of like Charlie whiles you sold them.
- 9:40Get animated on the sidelines, they punch things, they break
- 9:43things shit. Hopefully JC doesn't break his
- 9:46hand at any point in time. This year, that is what it is.
- 9:49Obviously if those three guys are on the field, it's leaving
- 9:53Pearson Prelude and Sean Quinn up in the box.
- 9:57And I think you just Kind of said, it piercing on the back
- 10:00end with Quinn coaching. The nickel in the Sam's closer
- 10:07to the line of scrimmage. Right?
- 10:09Yep, that's exactly it. And I think also, when you look
- 10:14at it you're talking about two very cerebral and experienced
- 10:20folks in the booth in terms of breaking down.
- 10:23Oh yeah, what's happening? You got, I mean Pearson
- 10:26obviously with with his pedigree And then you talk about Quinn, a
- 10:29guy that has been, you know, a head coach at another level, a
- 10:34guy that's been defensive coordinator at another level.
- 10:37So he's a guy that can diagnose and get that information down to
- 10:41the sidelines when you see something different than what
- 10:44they see from that position. Yeah, so that's the way it'll
- 10:48look. So as your kind of perusing, the
- 10:50sidelines notice, you'll notice those three guys, maybe they
- 10:53shape Pearson up in the Box. I almost want to make a bet that
- 10:56they will show Pearson in the Just because he played in his
- 11:00first year coaching. Alright, offensive game day.
- 11:03We didn't get as much on it, but we kind of got that they've been
- 11:07toying around with her to be Brad, Lynn or Tyler, Bowing in
- 11:10the box. And kind of the way Pride came
- 11:13off of how it was going to be in the Box, not a shock with an
- 11:17offensive coordinator. And Glenn was going to be on the
- 11:20field potentially. He didn't really talk to anyone
- 11:22else, but let's just kind of do some speculation. if bones in
- 11:27the box and Glen's on the field, let's start with Joe Rudolph?
- 11:34Where's Joe Rudolph boxer field? I'd say he is on the field,
- 11:40okay? Now, from your plan experience,
- 11:45I'm assuming that with an offensive line coach they need
- 11:48to be on the field because of the amount of people they need
- 11:50to talk with. Yeah.
- 11:53I mean, I've never had a offensive line coach that was in
- 11:57the booth in my, in my all my years of playing, I never had
- 12:02offensive line coach, that was in the food.
- 12:03So my assumption is that he will be there unless there's
- 12:07obviously, you know, a backup line coach might be up there,
- 12:11but but never never never the primary position coach.
- 12:15My other thought is that fontelle Minds will also be on
- 12:18the field. Okay, because if you've got,
- 12:23I'll say this, you've got a, you've got Boeing up, their
- 12:28minds is kind of the guy on the field that can work with the
- 12:32tight ends and the wide receivers.
- 12:35So that's my thought they're. All right.
- 12:37What do you think holds up in the box or do you think it's
- 12:39only going to be Tyler bowling with some analysts in the Box
- 12:41because obviously old some special teams coordinator?
- 12:45I'm thinking I'm thinking it's going to be bowing with some of
- 12:49the other assistant position coaches and some analysts.
- 12:54That's my field, just because of what hope does from a special
- 12:57teams coordinator. You want that guy on the field,
- 13:00okay? That's going to be interesting
- 13:01to see. It will be interesting to see
- 13:03who is on the field in, obviously, who's up in the Box.
- 13:07Hopefully we get some more info on that.
- 13:09I would also be interested because we do have more staffers
- 13:13who can be in the Box this year. Especially, you know, Ryan Chris
- 13:18right behind Chris getting a lot of Pub from Brent Pride talking
- 13:21about him. Is he that second set of As for
- 13:25Tyler bone in the box where you can have for the offensive
- 13:28coaches down the field including poultry specialty for.
- 13:31So that'll be really interesting.
- 13:34Well Brian, we were hoping we were hoping we were hoping and
- 13:38it did happen today. Before we went live, the depth
- 13:41chart was released. Well, The Unofficial depth chart
- 13:44and obviously, we've got a few things.
- 13:46We want to talk to on that tonight.
- 13:47And let's talk about first, the one that called your eyes, you
- 13:51mentioned was the wide receiver room.
- 13:56Yeah, that was that was an interesting one.
- 13:58Wasn't it? When we, when we were looking at
- 14:02it? We were like, okay, well, that's
- 14:04a little different because we talked the last, you know, few
- 14:07weeks who said. All right?
- 14:08So three guys, pretty much locks in terms of amount of, about of
- 14:14reps playing time snaps that they will get in a given game.
- 14:19What we didn't know is who that four and five guy, we're going
- 14:24to be. We now know that that was not a
- 14:28shock. Yeah, we're not a shop.
- 14:31We got guys smell in there at the for it is the 5.
- 14:35That is the pretty big. I mean I'll say it big shot
- 14:42William caki V, Texas katowice. This pack of Itza.
- 14:48Walk-on wide receiver from Charlotte 61 195.
- 14:52Four pounds. Definitely Providence High
- 14:57School down there. Redshirt Junior.
- 15:01His name. Had gotten mention though, you
- 15:04got mentioned in the last few weeks about how coach was
- 15:07impressed with him. Um, you know, there's not much
- 15:14he redshirted he played a, he played a few games and 2020 on
- 15:18special teams. Don't have any info fee, play
- 15:22lash. I'm assuming, if he's a redshirt
- 15:23Junior, you played last year as well.
- 15:27But it's one of those chakras because the fifth guy we were,
- 15:30you know, Christian moths, Jalen Jones, plethora of other
- 15:33players. So it's kind of shocking that
- 15:38walk on Big Willie. It's that fifth receiver spot
- 15:42and you know what, good on that kid.
- 15:45You don't like it for probably busting his ass giving 110%
- 15:49every day to wear. If other potentially more
- 15:54talented players weren't taken and he's busting his ass.
- 15:58Yeah, there you go. I would hope that first play of
- 16:02the game. He's on the field.
- 16:04I'll say this. So you know, we see him.
- 16:06There were a little shocked that that we see.
- 16:10Name there. But we're also not seeing from a
- 16:13depth chart just because of how its structured is what those
- 16:17hybrid players are doing within certain formations whether it's
- 16:21the three-wide sets or what have you, because I imagine that
- 16:26we're going to see a whole lot of Connor blumrich split out
- 16:29wide. I imagine that there's going to
- 16:30be sets and formations where we see chance black split out wide
- 16:36be shocking. Yeah, I don't think this is
- 16:39necessarily You know, he might be fifth in terms of, you know,
- 16:43he's got a WR next to his name right now but that's not
- 16:48necessarily saying he's going to be the fifth option at the wide
- 16:51receiver position. Well well we look at because of
- 16:54how much we have that position flexibility with some of the
- 16:58other players in that offense. Well especially when we look at
- 17:01tight end and it's literally or or which tells me Nick's gonna
- 17:06be on the field, a lot Drake's going to be on the field a lot.
- 17:09Conner's going to be on the field, a lot.
- 17:12Yeah. I mean Gary Kent Drake has great
- 17:14athleticism, he can split out, he can do a lot of things in the
- 17:16short game with obviously calling, Connors got some good
- 17:21speed. Sounds like his route running
- 17:23and hands are coming along as well so you know, we'll see him
- 17:27a lot. I feel like and you know they're
- 17:28going to even do some flexible things with Gallo.
- 17:31So this is not going to be and I haven't even mentioned my
- 17:36favorite player Daquan right yet.
- 17:38He's not on the depth chart for on what he's out on the depth
- 17:40chart yet. He's not on the depth chart yet
- 17:45what Braun is trying to say is when you put the wide receiver
- 17:48room on the depth chart it actually should go wide receiver
- 17:52than it should Encompass tight end and it shouldn't come as
- 17:54running back a little bit. These are wide receiver well
- 17:57when you're talking about the slot position you're probably
- 17:59talking about a truce lot but then you're also talking about
- 18:03two or three hybrid players that are going to be in there as well
- 18:06and then you probably are going to see it some point and we saw
- 18:08it in the spring game, Jaden in the Wayne kicking out playing.
- 18:12Wow. Pipe laying eggs because they
- 18:13did show that position flexibility.
- 18:16So and that's something we haven't seen a lot of, you know,
- 18:19shout out David Cunningham and all the reporters down there and
- 18:21giving us Insight. We never saw a lot of those
- 18:24periods where they were truly run sets with you were like an
- 18:27see, like get me what they're running sets.
- 18:29Let me see. Who's on the field.
- 18:31We never saw it, obviously, that will be unveiled Friday night.
- 18:34All right, let's Flip It To The bread-and-butter Man.
- 18:37The offensive line. So Shit, and Daniel Miller Tech
- 18:44on the on the right side. I think that's.
- 18:49And I would say that's really shocking but that's disturbing.
- 18:52But let me break it down a little bit further than that
- 18:55because I'm not as concerned as I think some people would be
- 18:59because when you're talking about a too deep on the
- 19:01offensive line, you're not really talking about a to a full
- 19:05to line. Most of these guys are not going
- 19:10to be playing. It's going to be a 7 to 8, man.
- 19:12Rotation, you're going to get your starters and then you're
- 19:14going to have, you know, your Braille and more that's going to
- 19:17be a swing guard, probably Xavier Chaplin, that's going to
- 19:21be a swing tackle and then you've got Jack Holly field at
- 19:25Centre. Those are going to be the eight
- 19:27guys that are going to primary reps at the position, barring
- 19:30significant injury. Now, if we do have significant
- 19:34injury, it gets a little scary. But we still have a traditional
- 19:40eight-man rotation that most offensive line coaches are
- 19:43comfortable with. I don't think there's a big flaw
- 19:48in any of those first seven or eight guys.
- 19:52After that, it's a very steep drop off.
- 19:55All right. Do you think Xavier is ready to
- 19:57play in the first month? Or is he one of those guys?
- 20:00He's like the seven and a quarter and it's that first
- 20:04month and been practice talking about, he's like, these guys are
- 20:06getting better in the season and where we hope we don't have to
- 20:09see him until after. After four three or four games,
- 20:15I mean, you want to get him, some reps at least at Wofford
- 20:19Saturday and hopefully Saturday at ODU, Friday, I'm proud of
- 20:22you. At least it'll be a Friday night
- 20:23at least at least at Wofford though.
- 20:25You want to get him some significant reps but then you
- 20:28probably don't want to put him in there unless you absolutely
- 20:31have to after that because you probably want to say if we can
- 20:37red shirt and great. If we can't that's fine too
- 20:41because he's ready to play. So you know, you're holding him
- 20:46back as much as you can. You get in maybe one or two
- 20:49games early in the season and then unless you absolutely have
- 20:52to get him reps. You kind of holding back.
- 20:55Yeah, absolutely. Because what the hope is you get
- 20:58into that November part of the schedule and you decide which
- 21:02two games there. Yep, that you want him to play
- 21:05in. To get more reps to get ready
- 21:08for next year to probably be the FrontRunner for left tackle,
- 21:12he's the left tackle in waiting for sure.
- 21:14Yeah. He's the left tackle in Waiting,
- 21:15he's the guy that's gonna relieve Silas of his duties at
- 21:19the end of the season. Now we go.
- 21:21All right, defensive in. Obviously with the news today
- 21:24that CJ McRae is banged up there.
- 21:27Potentially seeing if you will make the trip down to Norfolk
- 21:30for Friday night and we heard that it's like, okay and I think
- 21:35Brian would you got kind of a Is when you see three young guys on
- 21:39that, too deep. Yeah, that was the big thing for
- 21:43me, you know, seeing you know, McDonald was the one that jumped
- 21:46off in terms of not expecting him to be at that point.
- 21:52So seeing him there is interesting, but especially
- 21:55Burgos and moist and the the true freshman in there, you
- 22:00know, we got Burgos kind of in that that quasi two, two, three,
- 22:06three, three deep at one end. You got moist in there and I
- 22:10think, you know, once you get McRae back Hopefully, it's this
- 22:12week. I think that's one of those
- 22:14things where he's banged up apparently he practiced today.
- 22:18So he's not it's not a significant injury but it might
- 22:22be one of those. He's a guy we're going to need a
- 22:25month from now. Let's not rush him back against
- 22:28ODU. Well, it's a guy.
- 22:30You feel like you're going to need more next week potentially
- 22:33than this week? Absolutely.
- 22:35You know, it's one of those things where if we're
- 22:38controlling this game in, CJ doesn't need to Play great less
- 22:42physical toll on his body, whatever.
- 22:44Part of the body is injured to get him healthy and be a full,
- 22:48go for Boston College, and I think that's the issue.
- 22:52But I think seeing those young guys you starting to see, you
- 22:56know, some of the older guys who have been here for a few years,
- 22:59no disrespect to them. Like Eli.
- 23:00Atoms are kind of getting in the back seat.
- 23:03Could they still see potential time?
- 23:04Yes, it's the line. You know, the bodies that aren't
- 23:08named. They're still going to get some
- 23:09play time. So don't I'm not going to be
- 23:11shy. About that.
- 23:12Yeah I'm kind of happy. I'll say this.
- 23:14I'm kind of happy. I'm not seeing Eli Adams in
- 23:17there and that's no knock on him personally.
- 23:19But based on his size and what he brings his pass rush was
- 23:27never in his speed was never Elite enough to justify what we
- 23:31gave up in his physical size. He would get pushed around he
- 23:37unless he was beating you around the edge with his speed.
- 23:40He didn't really bring a lot to the table solid tackler, but
- 23:45overall just not. Not a well-rounded player enough
- 23:48to have out there for more than a spot spot snap here or there.
- 23:54So seeing these guys, As these younger guys, come up, making
- 23:57plays, and challenging, some of those Veterans for these
- 24:01rotational spots. On the defensive line, I think,
- 24:03is a big thing. Yep.
- 24:05Now, what kind of was a shocker to me was a linebacker and no,
- 24:10not my crocheting. Those are exactly probably like
- 24:13we expected to see them, but when we take a look at the will,
- 24:18it's Jaden Keller. Gave McDonald or Alan Tisdale
- 24:24The triple or again, in at a position, unlike tight end where
- 24:30it's very unlikely. All three are going to be able
- 24:32to feel the same time. And I look at this and I just
- 24:36think I think Jaden Keller is coming on like a freaking
- 24:39freight train to take that spot. Yeah I mean it looks like Keller
- 24:43is I mean it's gonna be his I think by the end of the season
- 24:47like. If it if it isn't, you know,
- 24:50already he's obviously one a right now, he's the That's going
- 24:54to be on the field first. But the interesting thing that I
- 24:58saw in there and especially since we didn't see a guy like
- 25:01Dean Ferguson's name in here, seeing Jaden McDonald, kind of
- 25:06ahead of Alan Tisdale and we knew that Tisdale has been
- 25:08running with the threes during some of these scrimmage sessions
- 25:12in practice. But We didn't know if that was
- 25:17necessarily indicative of what the depth chart will look like,
- 25:19if that's just, you know, something that he's been doing.
- 25:23But apparently, he was wearing a scout team jersey one day.
- 25:27And like so this is this is an interesting situation, but I
- 25:32said it last week, you know, this can only be an elevation of
- 25:36playwright because when we talk about Alan Tisdale's play, it's
- 25:40always been inconsistent. He had a breakout year in
- 25:44nineteen and it's kind of Been steadily and meddling.
- 25:50He's been meddling. We know he had things going on
- 25:52in his life birth of a child and stuff like that.
- 25:55And that trust me that can that can get you from chasing your
- 25:58goals to sort of level setting and normally attempted to attack
- 26:03those goals again. So it's just interesting to see
- 26:06that but everything from Keller it's just he's getting the size.
- 26:11I mean he's 63 already he's already up in the 225 pound
- 26:15range and he Remember he was a recruited as a receiver if I
- 26:20don't recall, right, I believe. So, and he was an athlete.
- 26:25So this guy has some nasty nasty athleticism that.
- 26:31If you're talking about, you know, next year, is he the mic
- 26:35is potentially kalai. Lawson, who was seen at practice
- 26:38today, which is good, which is good, same way.
- 26:42Maybe he's getting closer to going in that little Nick, he
- 26:46had is gone. Gone.
- 26:47I hope so at least for the rest of the season.
- 26:50But if Keller, is that guy. I mean athletically in the
- 26:55linebacking corps, we're going to go from where we've been
- 26:57solid to back to. I think Tremaine, I think
- 27:03Xavier, I think some of those other guys like that which is a
- 27:05big step in the right direction in this era of college football.
- 27:10Yeah. And I just checked so he was
- 27:12recruited as a linebacker but he came in at 2020.
- 27:16Well, So he's put on 21 pounds and one and a half Seasons here.
- 27:22I think that's pretty big for him.
- 27:24I think that's going to and he's only going to get better going
- 27:27forward especially with guys like Marvin pry.
- 27:32Working with him, so heavily. So I'm looking forward to seeing
- 27:35what this kid can do long term for sure.
- 27:38Awesome. Well, last piece want to take a
- 27:40look at here is the corner back room and Brie on Murray.
- 27:47Ian and I'm Hannah cabin at the York.
- 27:51I'm not shocked to see this because I think you've been
- 27:54mentioning it over and over again about situation right
- 27:57there, some things Armani's, the better overall.
- 28:00But there are some things that Briana Marie does in certain
- 28:04situations, where he does benefit.
- 28:08So I think that's big. I think it's also think it's
- 28:12awesome to see the DJ Harvey is holding down the two slot behind
- 28:15Orion strong. Yeah, that's big.
- 28:19I like Harvey. I like that he's, you know, from
- 28:22all accounts is going to be the primary Nickelback when we go
- 28:24into that, that Personnel Group. So it's going to be interesting
- 28:29to see what happens with the Armani Chapman Breann.
- 28:32Marie combo there, you know, we I've mentioned it before Murray
- 28:36does pretty well. When he can drive on a route, he
- 28:41doesn't do great turning and running, especially with kind of
- 28:45the the Guys, that have that combination of speed and and
- 28:50strength and size. You know, he's five-ten, he's
- 28:56190, he's not Armani Chapman. He's got, who's got an inch on
- 28:59him and almost 20 pounds Armani? Can, you know, fight with those
- 29:05receivers at the line of scrimmage a little bit more and
- 29:09still make up some ground there. So there's a little bit of
- 29:11difference there between those two and I think Murray's, lack
- 29:14of size. He struggles against guys, We
- 29:17saw in the spring game with Caleb Smith, he struggles with
- 29:19that type of player, a player with good size, good strength,
- 29:24and above average speed. So there's probably going to be
- 29:29situations where Murray's out there for stretches and
- 29:32depending on how he's matchup and who he's matched up again,
- 29:36that could be good or bad for us.
- 29:38I like Chapman overall better though.
- 29:40Chapman is a more rounded player.
- 29:43There aren't the gaps when he gets against certain
- 29:47Competition, there has been some areas where, you know, the
- 29:53mental gaps, have been there where he hasn't been in the
- 29:56right place in terms of busted coverages and things like that.
- 30:01But if he can clean that stuff up, I think he's going to be all
- 30:04right there abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 30:06So if you guys haven't checked it out there, I'm always going
- 30:11to push. David Cunningham has it out
- 30:13there. I think you were a little
- 30:14article for Tech Sidelines today.
- 30:16Day discussing with the depth chart looks like take a look at
- 30:20it. It's going to be interesting to
- 30:21see what the product as one of our listeners here tonight.
- 30:27Matt Jones has said can't wait to see the own feel product.
- 30:30I think that's what we're all waiting for now, this change in
- 30:33culture, that's changing some philosophies, some upgrades at
- 30:36certain positions, and now that it's here, It's here.
- 30:42So this is what we're going to do.
- 30:44We are going to take a quick pause from our digital partners
- 30:49and we are going to get into Know The Enemy for the ODU
- 30:52monarchs. Because we take a quick break.

- 31:14Now back to the episode All right, Brian.
- 31:18So let's flip it here. Let's get to know the enemy, the
- 31:21ODU monarchs and let's start on the offensive side of the ball
- 31:25and let's talk about their quarterback, Hayden wolf of 65,
- 31:29235 pounds came out in 2019 as a three-star from Venice, Florida,
- 31:36and then, you know, last year, had a solid season started ten
- 31:41games, sixty-three percent, completion percentage liver,
- 31:451,900 yards, Words, little over seven and a half per attempts,
- 31:4910 touchdown seven interceptions, you got to look
- 31:54at the tape. What's the tape telling you
- 31:56about this guy? Yeah.
- 31:58I mean Hayden wolf is a pretty good-looking quarterback.
- 32:01He does a good job of working through his progressions.
- 32:05The routes. He likes to throw the best.
- 32:08He throws a good seem good, fade kind of those intermediate
- 32:11intermediate routes. Just inside the hash just
- 32:15outside the hash. He sometimes inaccurate with
- 32:19those intermediate routes, especially over the middle.
- 32:21And I'm not talking about the, the, the Fades of the scenes but
- 32:24more of the, like, digs He's crossers things of that nature,
- 32:29he'll miss sometimes, at least interceptions, sometimes that
- 32:33least, overthrows, his eyes can be affected by the rush like
- 32:38most quarterbacks but it's especially true for a guy like
- 32:41him because he is a true pocket quarterback.
- 32:45He is not a quarterback that's going to move around a lot.
- 32:47He's not a quarterback that is going to take off a lot.
- 32:51He is a guy that's going to sit in the pocket waiting for it to
- 32:54come open. Go through his progressions and
- 32:56deliver it. So, we can get pressure on him
- 32:59early in the step down. That's going to improve our odds
- 33:01of getting off the field. Yeah.
- 33:03And you mentioned about not a true Russian quarterback.
- 33:05I mean, the data shows it. He only attempted to run 14
- 33:08times in 10 games last year and with when you accrued that with
- 33:12also the times he was sacked you as negative 92 yards, rushing
- 33:17the ball. So obviously the threats, not
- 33:19there at all but I know something you've been
- 33:22mentioning, Brian. Looking at this offense is
- 33:24talking about the mess. Shhhh, and what we should be
- 33:29doing with that concerning. Hayden wolf.
- 33:34Yeah, I mean just he's a statue back there he's not going to
- 33:37take off and run, there's no reason to respect the mesh point
- 33:41for the quarterback run because he's just not going to do it.
- 33:44It's not their attack. The running back.
- 33:48Make sure your backer is prepared because they do have
- 33:50some are BR p 0 type elements in this offense but there's no
- 33:54reason to respect the quarterback taking off and
- 33:57trying to get a first down. Alright, well let's flip it in.
- 34:01Let's talk about a couple of his favorite weapons here tonight.
- 34:03In the first one is a legitimately a very large human
- 34:07being that cunts. The tight end, six foot eight
- 34:13245 pounds when he came out in 2018.
- 34:17He was a four-star out of Camp Hill PA.
- 34:19He was a top 150 player, a top-five tight end in the
- 34:24country. He originally committed to Penn
- 34:26State. So Brent Prime mentioned it
- 34:29today. Hey I was one of the guys are
- 34:30recruited Zach. Know a lot about what use a good
- 34:33thing in my opinion, he did leave Penn State in 2021 through
- 34:39the portal. And Brawn, let's talk about this
- 34:43guy like what he is and he's is he their best player on the
- 34:48field in general? Yeah.
- 34:52I mean I would say he is their biggest Target in that offense,
- 34:57okay. In terms of volume he's going to
- 35:01be the guy that's going to get the heaviest Targets in the
- 35:03passing game. That doesn't mean he's going to
- 35:05rack up the most yards or anything like that, but he is
- 35:08the guy that is going to be targeted, the most and the
- 35:10offense, he's a big physical tight and you already talked
- 35:13about that. He's got that NFL size and
- 35:15athleticism that you would see in a top 150 power 5.
- 35:21Did tight in and he is their primary Red Zone threat as well.
- 35:28So when they get in the Red Zone they will look for him to get in
- 35:32the end zone. But he's definitely a guy that
- 35:34we've got to check constantly because they will hit him up.
- 35:37The seam, they will hit him outside of the hashes
- 35:41occasionally. So they'll line them up in
- 35:43different places, but he's still that kind of prototypical style
- 35:48tight end that you'll see in the NFL.
- 35:50Let me ask this for I get into some of the stats from last
- 35:53year. What do you think we're going to
- 35:55do coverage wise, is this going to be a bracket type coverage or
- 35:59do you think, you know, one of our safety's, our linebackers
- 36:02who are significantly athletic, even though they're going to
- 36:05give up size or going to hang with them, like what do you
- 36:07think the plan is to counter this guy?
- 36:12I think they're going to put their best coverage backers.
- 36:16Safety against him, fairly significantly and hope that we
- 36:19can get enough pressure with the Blitz and pressure with the
- 36:22Demons of wine to where he can't cause us too much trouble.
- 36:29Don't necessarily think we're going to bracket him.
- 36:32Yeah I think at that point that takes away some of what Mars and
- 36:38and prize defense is about. I think they're hoping they can
- 36:43put enough pressure on Wolf to where he can't deliver those
- 36:47passes on time and in the right location for Koontz to hurt us
- 36:51too bad. Yeah.
- 36:52And for coons last year 73 reception 692 yards nine and a
- 36:57half percent. Subsection with five touchdowns
- 37:00and this really was his first time playing a full season.
- 37:03He only played into a couple games at Penn State and 18 and
- 37:0619 did not play any 20 so you know he's obviously coming off a
- 37:11good year he's obviously got some physical attributes but
- 37:14luckily it's one of those weird things luckily you say somebody
- 37:18that knows him and that was in the building with him for three
- 37:21years is now coaching on the other side of the ball against
- 37:24him. So if there's anyone that
- 37:26potentially knows what's gonna be the best way to handle,
- 37:28Ellen, I would put that trust in print pry.
- 37:31Alright? So after cunts, probably their
- 37:35next biggest weapon, is Ali Jennings.
- 37:37Wide receiver 6-foot 296 pounds, a 3 star from Highland Springs.
- 37:43High School that was never offered by Virginia Tech when he
- 37:47came out. I will go ahead and make that
- 37:49note. He did own hair out.
- 37:51Yeah, he did originally commit to West Virginia back. 2019.
- 38:00And he came to ODU from the portal in 2021 where he kind of
- 38:05had a breakout season and Brian. I know you got to see some
- 38:08really good things on his tape. Yeah.
- 38:11He's a very solid route, Runner. He's got great quickness,
- 38:14especially in the intermediate passing game, he does have a
- 38:18drop every now and then nothing to really write home about, but
- 38:23they do happen, but he is good with catches in traffic.
- 38:27There's a lot of times where he's Targeted over the middle up
- 38:30the scene, where he can make that tough tough catch.
- 38:32Along the sideline, make a tough catch, and he's really big run
- 38:37after the catch guys. So when he, when he gets the
- 38:39ball in his hands he can do some some pretty filthy things down
- 38:42the field, definitely an NFL caliber type receiver in saying
- 38:47that we did not offer this kid out of Highland Springs.
- 38:51What the fuck are we thinking? But we just talked about the
- 38:55only two players on their team that I think could Potentially
- 38:58be starters for us. All right, good do I think when
- 39:06you've been kind of explaining him to me, see, in some of his
- 39:08dad is from last year, looking at a little bit of me, looking
- 39:11at highlight film, not looking at tape, like you I can't I
- 39:15think we're going to see early with this game is with the new
- 39:20you know, with the new stuff on defense.
- 39:24This is he's like a cocky guy if you're telling me that we're
- 39:27tackling them at the spot, he catches the ball.
- 39:29He's not able to get that right? Then some of this stuff is going
- 39:34to be very interesting and Levar Cooper.
- 39:38You know, here from Facebook saying that he thinks they're
- 39:41going to try to test our Corners back going down field.
- 39:46I think they might, but I also think I don't think Brent prize
- 39:50going to let them do that at all.
- 39:53I mean I think we're going to see a lot of heavy blitzing.
- 39:55I think I said I think they're going to put the pressure on
- 39:58Wolf to make a quick decision early in the snap count and get
- 40:02the ball out of his hands. I don't know if this offense is
- 40:05designed for that, they like the Intermediate stuff.
- 40:11Some of that takes a little time to develop.
- 40:13We're going to have opportunities to get sacks.
- 40:15We got to get home. We got to finish it and we got
- 40:18to make sure that we're moving will fall off his spot where
- 40:23He's either throwing off balance or he's having a throw on the
- 40:27Run. Because that's not his bread and
- 40:30butter. He likes to sit back there in
- 40:31the pocket and diagnose and deliver.
- 40:34All right, so that's going to be a key there and with Ali
- 40:36Jennings last year. I mean, he went over 1,000 yards
- 40:39and 13 game. 62 receptionist 1066 over 17 yards of reception.
- 40:44I think right there. You see, the yet the rack and
- 40:48the Yad with only five touchdown.
- 40:50So again, I want to see how are tackling, especially on the
- 40:53perimeter will definitely. He will definitely be a
- 40:55challenge to our cornerbacks and Our safeties along with the
- 41:00other parts of the defense, all right, Braun before we get into
- 41:04their best player. Give me just high level overview
- 41:07of what you see from this offensive line.
- 41:11Their average, they're very average and I'd say they're
- 41:18they're decently balance, but they are a little heavier on
- 41:21past Pro than on the Run. They're not going to pull you
- 41:25away. They do have a couple guys on
- 41:27that line. That do a pretty good job in the
- 41:31Run game. One, we're about to talk about
- 41:33here in a moment. But They got behind the down and
- 41:38distance a lot last year. And a lot of the rushing yards,
- 41:42they got were in some garbage time situations last year, okay?
- 41:47So it'll be interesting to see, you know what that looks like
- 41:52this year, if that offensive line has improved at all.
- 41:55But decent. But nothing to write home about.
- 42:00Got it in obviously, I think, you know, we've been talking
- 42:02about probably the best player who's getting some
- 42:05all-conference accolade. Preseason and Nick salivary.
- 42:08The right tackle, 663 16 years originally a 2 Star back in.
- 42:132018 from Monroe, North Carolina.
- 42:16Obviously he's getting all the conference honors.
- 42:18Is he their best offensive lineman yet?
- 42:21Farther away their best offensive lineman?
- 42:23Definitely the most balanced offensive lineman in terms of
- 42:25what he can do in pass Pro. And what he does in the running
- 42:28game, I tell you probably their best run Blocker on the team,
- 42:33which you don't always see from a right tackle position.
- 42:36Ian and his past Pro is is as good as anybody else on that
- 42:41team as well. So good balance, he's not an
- 42:44elite player but there's really no weak area of his game that we
- 42:47can really attack consistently. No, I haven't seen much on this.
- 42:51But are they projecting him to stay at right side?
- 42:55I don't know for sure, I did not see a scouting report that
- 42:59showed that so I don't know if he's switching over to the left
- 43:02side. Yeah, I'm all effort that real
- 43:05quick while we take a look at the next guy here.
- 43:07And this is the last piece of the offense.
- 43:09We're going to look at here and his name is Blake Watson.
- 43:12Laughs, if you from Halifax County listening to this and
- 43:16it's not a school, the guy named League Watson lives in Roanoke.
- 43:19Now Blake Watson 5-foot £995. Originally recruited as a Wide
- 43:25receiver out of high school. He was from Green.
- 43:29Hope down in Cary. North Carolina was a two-star
- 43:32back in 2018. And, you know, Brian, I see the
- 43:36stat line. And, I mean, I hope one of our
- 43:38guys can do this to this year. I mean, 1112 yards over five of
- 43:43carry eight, touchdowns that much of an receiving game.
- 43:48But I mean, still something. What did, what did his tape show
- 43:51and why didn't he jump out to you as much as the other two?
- 43:55Offensive guys did. So the big thing is that he's
- 43:59not quite the game breaker that the other two are, you know, we
- 44:05see a guy like Koontz. He's really hard to match up
- 44:08against. He's the guy that can hurt you
- 44:11in the middle of the feel hurt you in the red zone, you can see
- 44:13a guy like Ali Jennings that can you take a quick route?
- 44:18Take it to the house, beat you, that intermediate game, you
- 44:22know, Watson is kind of a bread and butter he's used.
- 44:25It's a stick mover. He's got pretty good Vision but
- 44:30you know you don't really see him breaking off.
- 44:33Huge runs consistently he does have a burst when he gets to the
- 44:37second level though. So you got to make sure that
- 44:40we're at him at the point of attack, get him down before he
- 44:44breaks past that second level. So you got to wrap up and get
- 44:48him to the ground. He'll bite you.
- 44:49But he's got that kind of one cut style when cutting go so we
- 44:55definitely need to make sure when we get our hands on and we
- 44:57get him to the ground but he's not the game breaker type
- 45:01player. But he is a guy that will get 15
- 45:04to 20 carries a game and probably go for about 100 yards
- 45:07on those makes sense with the stat lines and everything.
- 45:10So again it's that key and I hope the stuff that's been
- 45:15biting Us in the ass. Last few years where we have
- 45:17running backs dead to rights for that.
- 45:20Three or four yard Moss begins to matriculate into Keeping into
- 45:25three to four large losses versus letting them.
- 45:27Break the tackle getting back to the line of scrimmage and in
- 45:30some cases getting positive yards because I think for me as
- 45:33a fan that is one of the most frustrating things when, you
- 45:38know, you can put a team in a bad situation and you're just
- 45:42letting it slip with piss-poor fundamentals in the NFL
- 45:46football. Absolutely.
- 45:48All right, Brian. Let's just kind of take a
- 45:49high-level look now at the offense.
- 45:51Obviously, it's Ricky Ronnie's offense.
- 45:54The guy Georgia Tech came in, yes.
- 45:56But they essentially, you can say they're from the same type
- 45:58tree. Now, I think the offensive line
- 46:02coach, you called, the Tulsa game.
- 46:04His name is slipping or you're right now.
- 46:06I didn't document that is going to be the play caller.
- 46:10But you know what are we seeing and what you expect to see
- 46:13Friday night from the Saudi you offense, In terms of
- 46:17play-calling it's going to be interesting, right?
- 46:20Because you got to get a brand new play.
- 46:22Caller brand new coordinator, you know, three weeks before the
- 46:27season starts ODU loses their quarterbacks coach and offensive
- 46:32coordinator. So for about a week looks like
- 46:35Ricky Ronnie was probably pulling triple duty at practice.
- 46:37Oh yeah until they worked out what that succession line was
- 46:42going to look like but I mean this is that you know multiple
- 46:47Smash Mouth spread RPO, if is the emphasis that will go
- 46:51multiple, but it's mostly going to be Smash Mouth spread with
- 46:54RPO Concepts in there. Like I've said with with the
- 47:00intermediate, that's their bread and butter especially on early
- 47:03Downs. When the defense isn't expecting
- 47:05it, they leaned heavily on their primary targets, Jennings Koontz
- 47:11to get open early in the snap wolf does do a good job of going
- 47:16through his progressions but usually when He does he's not
- 47:19that that's not going to be a big yard yard get her that's
- 47:21going to be something that helps them.
- 47:24Stay ahead of the sticks. It's not something that we're
- 47:28there. He's going through second and
- 47:30third progressions and then getting a 20 or 30 yard gain out
- 47:33of it. It's something where it's more
- 47:34of a, he's good at all, right? Where's my primary?
- 47:37Where's my secondary? Where's my check down?
- 47:39He gets to a check down. They get three or four yards and
- 47:44that if they're going to beat you with those intermediate
- 47:46plays, they're going to do it. Early in the snap and they have
- 47:48to do that because of the the limitations they have at
- 47:50quarterback in terms of athleticism.
- 47:54The other thing that in this is going to be a theme when we get
- 47:57to the defense as well, penalties sacks drops, will kill
- 48:01effective drives for this offense routinely especially
- 48:05when they're against kind of evenly matched or better
- 48:08competition which in this case would qualify as that.
- 48:13So you know, look for them to kind of shoot themselves in a It
- 48:17in the foot often, when they start getting some of those
- 48:20effective drives that end up being Drive Killers.
- 48:23Absolutely in y'all are going to see as we get into the Hokies
- 48:27Keys. Later about this penalties when
- 48:29I did the research. It was like, Jesus Christ, what
- 48:32an undisciplined team. But before we get there, there's
- 48:35teaser. We're going to look at the
- 48:37defensive side of the ball. Yeah, I've gotten better
- 48:40teachers over the years but let's talk about guy.
- 48:43The guy in the middle. Ryan Henry, the linebacker.
- 48:47Juuko 62, 225, 2019 3 star. He went to a sa Juco.
- 48:54He was originally from Miami South Ridge and he actually was
- 48:57originally a safety product. What do you see from Ryan Henry
- 49:02on the tape run? He's kind of above average with
- 49:06his coverage skills, but he's not his great against the run.
- 49:10But the big thing that helps him out is that he is a shirt, a
- 49:13killer but they don't really use him very much as a Blitzer or a
- 49:17pass rusher. He's primarily the guy that's
- 49:19going to be back in coverage, coming up when there's a run
- 49:24making a play there, he's not someone that they send and get a
- 49:27lot of tackles for loss sacks, things of that nature.
- 49:31He's not that type of disrupter. So is essentially truly is
- 49:36playing like a they are treating him as a safety at linebacker
- 49:39then versus converting to linebacker where he obviously
- 49:43has a bill to have the traits but maybe hasn't picked up that
- 49:46middle portion of the game. Dad maybe, I mean some of it is
- 49:50scheme as well. The way that deploy him is
- 49:54definitely more on the, the coverage Style.
- 49:59That's just what he does better and I think they kind of leaned
- 50:03on that. Got it, got it.
- 50:06All right. Well, let's look at one of the
- 50:07guys on the back end here and that's arterian Johnson.
- 50:11The five 1196 pound safety. Also, another Juco, he was from
- 50:17Gulf Coast Community College, regionally grew up in Wiggins
- 50:20Mississippi, what do you think? Arterian in my opinion he's the
- 50:26best player on their defense and it's probably not that close.
- 50:31The argument could be made for the next guy.
- 50:33We're going to talk about but Hot to me artery in Johnson's
- 50:36the best player on that defense. He cleans up a lot of their
- 50:40inconsistencies both in the passing game and the rushing
- 50:43game just with his play, very good tackler above average and
- 50:49coverage. He's the guy that's getting
- 50:51everybody where they need to be in that secondary.
- 50:56And again, cerebral, he's definitely The Head and
- 51:00Shoulders Above the Rest of the secondary, in my opinion.
- 51:03Yeah, and his stat lines. Um last year look, you know
- 51:06really good. I'm assuming he's probably more
- 51:08of a safety in the Box. I mean 92 combined tackles he
- 51:12had three and a half tackles for loss, he had two picks Six
- 51:16Paths, deflections so, where did you see him lined up?
- 51:19As he playing more of a free coming down or she playing more
- 51:22you know that strong Rover type position little more of the
- 51:26Rover. He's definitely playing in the
- 51:29Box a little bit more and he's a guy that again would On the
- 51:35running back, come up and making plays in the running game.
- 51:39So like I said, overall I think he's the guy that you want to
- 51:45make sure your accounting for as an offense.
- 51:50All right, let's take, let's stay on the back and go outside
- 51:53a little bit more. Let's take a look at Trey
- 51:55Hawkins. The third cornerback
- 51:58six-foot-three. 195 pounds of Texas product down in Temple,
- 52:02Texas. Actually, another Juco attended
- 52:05Trinity Valley, think of you. Here we go, is very familiar
- 52:08with that and, you know, a guy who played last year, seventy
- 52:13seven, tackles five tackles for loss, six pass deflections in a
- 52:16forced fumble soil, you know, a really good staff.
- 52:19One last year and obviously that body type, you know, is is he
- 52:24playing outside, or is he playing a little more hybrid
- 52:28position for ODU? Now he's playing outside.
- 52:32Okay. Yeah.
- 52:33And watching the tape, he was a lot better covering the the
- 52:37quick and intermediate stuff than he was some of the deep
- 52:40stuff he when he drives on a route that's when he's at his
- 52:46best. When he's having to turn and
- 52:51run, that's when you can potentially get some stuff
- 52:54behind him, he can get fooled with a double move and be deep
- 53:00because again, he likes to drive on routes.
- 53:02He's gonna he's gonna bite on those double moves from time to
- 53:06time and get beat deep. He has good quickness.
- 53:10But only above average, top-end speed.
- 53:13He's not not an elite Speedster. So, he really relies on that
- 53:17quickness. In that ability to drive on a
- 53:19routes to really impact his play.
- 53:22Did they have any video of him playing like a press coverage?
- 53:26Or was he always playing all four?
- 53:29He would it would mix it up. Okay.
- 53:31And he was decent impressed, but again it's kind of that that
- 53:36second phase that that he wasn't as great at.
- 53:41I always ask at because I see you know, him being potentially
- 53:44their best cornerback is who he gets matched up against right?
- 53:48And, you know, you think about somebody like Dwayne or Jaden
- 53:53probably little bit quicker, but when I think of someone like
- 53:56Caleb Smith Caleb will more strong.
- 54:00Caleb does have a little quickness, but he's one of those
- 54:02guys. A lot of players would not want
- 54:04to make a pretzel because Caleb has that strength to essentially
- 54:08shed the press and Caleb's got enough speed to Get by you and
- 54:12get down the field quickly. So be very interesting to see
- 54:14how and if they match up. All right, let's flip it back
- 54:18down to the defensive line. I know you had some Choice words
- 54:24about the defensive line in general about, you know, it
- 54:27essentially. Kind of rough to look at.
- 54:30But let's talk about that and then Marques Haynes.
- 54:34One of the defensive ends at six foot four, 240 from Bowie.
- 54:38Maryland, originally a two-star went to Fork.
- 54:41Union back in 2017 is when he came out, what does hangs look
- 54:47like on? Take.
- 54:49Yeah, he's definitely their most balanced player.
- 54:51They usually, he's on an opposite.
- 54:53The they'll use a stand-up in kind of like bar.
- 54:55No. Did last year and one side On
- 54:59the opposite. He's got his hand in the dirt.
- 55:01He's more of a true you know defensive end from a technique
- 55:06standpoint. He's above average against the
- 55:09Run, he's a decent pass rusher. Nothing to really write home
- 55:12about on that front but it's not, you know, a weakness, he'll
- 55:18occasionally flash, a big Drive, killing play with with some of
- 55:22his penetration especially in the Run game.
- 55:27But it's more consistent of a player in terms of his steady
- 55:30production and he is kind of a standout player that's making a
- 55:33ton of those game. Got it in last year.
- 55:38He killed her was their leader in Saxon five and a half.
- 55:41So not a big number. The team itself didn't have a
- 55:44lot of sacks didn't have a lot of turnovers.
- 55:47So Brian, you've kind of already mentioned it.
- 55:49They have a stand-up in what sort of Defense are they in?
- 55:53And what are some of the things that we should see from them on
- 55:56Friday night? Yeah, it's kind of similar to
- 56:00what we saw last year for the Hokies.
- 56:02It's a 425, they got to stand up in.
- 56:05They mix in a significant amount of Zone with some man main
- 56:08Concepts. They don't Blitz a ton, they
- 56:13will get aggressive on kind of third and medium and third and
- 56:16long but then it's usually in situations, it's not something
- 56:20where there you would call them an aggressive defense.
- 56:24But they do have good Pursuit both in the Run game and
- 56:27Intermediate passing game getting to those guys making
- 56:31plays after the catch. They don't really get enough
- 56:34pass rush. I know I've already talked about
- 56:36that for some of the double moves or slow developing routes,
- 56:39so that can be risky, when opposing offenses, are good with
- 56:43those type of Concepts. They are super undisciplined and
- 56:47prone to hurting themselves with penalties and miscues, this is a
- 56:52very undisciplined defense. They will give you first downs.
- 56:56They will give you first down. Towns for stupid stuff.
- 56:59They will give you first downs for procedural, stuff.
- 57:03They will give you first downs. Because for whatever reason,
- 57:07even in man coverage, a cornerback will run with a tight
- 57:11end, running a wheel instead of sticking with the Z receiver,
- 57:15like it's it shit like that. Constantly, they shoot
- 57:19themselves in the foot that results in some big plays, and
- 57:23you end up in a situation where You know, you're playing for
- 57:26behind a lot and they were playing from behind a lot last
- 57:29season, especially in the first what, six to seven games of that
- 57:33year. Very true.
- 57:35Now going through some of this tape that any of the Marshall
- 57:39tape come up on the defense, I did not watch Marshall.
- 57:45Okay, I had to ask, I know you're having to pick and find
- 57:48pieces of tape here and there and some tapes not readily
- 57:51available to us. So we move on and what will move
- 57:55on to next? Y'all is going to be the Hokies
- 57:57keys and what are the keys to this game and we want to see
- 58:02though keys with a Big W what's got to happen and I'm going to
- 58:06start here, Brian with turnovers.
- 58:08And when I look back last year with ODU, In their wins and
- 58:12their six wins in 2021, their turnover margin was plus two.
- 58:20So any kind of went like this and their wins.
- 58:23So basically in two of the six wins, they won the margin in
- 58:27one, they lost the margin. Three were even and against
- 58:31these six reinstate only had one team that was 500 or better than
- 58:35that was Middle Tennessee, State.
- 58:37And that game is one of the ones they won the margin on and they
- 58:41still only won that game by a touchdown. 24:17.
- 58:47Okay, so even on their wins, sloppiness is obvious on the
- 58:53offensive side of the ball. You know, they beat a Hampton
- 59:00team, they beat a couple three winning teams and that fight.
- 59:03If I use a one win team last year, so they got six wins last
- 59:07year, but they were not even close to Pretty Wings.
- 59:09Now, when you talk about their seven losses, they were negative
- 59:1410 in turnover margin. Which is just shitty because
- 59:19that's almost you're given the other team, the ball one and a
- 59:22half times a game that show up on the tape.
- 59:26Yeah a lot of it showed up on the tape particularly when they
- 59:30were playing Western Kentucky, who got off to a pretty awful
- 59:32start themselves last year in that game?
- 59:38The first half was a comedy of errors for that offense, against
- 59:45Western Kentucky, which did not Have a very good defense.
- 59:50There was a turnover. There was a bulb on the ground.
- 59:53There were just a lot of miscues across the board.
- 59:57And that resulted in them playing from behind
- 1:00:00significantly heading into halftime.
- 1:00:03You know, they came out with a better plan but there was still
- 1:00:07another turnover in the second half and they lost that margin.
- 1:00:12I think it was three to three to one in favor Western Kentucky
- 1:00:16and that game. Yeah, so overall it's one of the
- 1:00:20big Keys If Hokies win the turnover battle.
- 1:00:25This game's not even going to be closer than what we're
- 1:00:27predicting if it's insane. Like it was when they had those
- 1:00:3032 ones or 32 nothing's last year really, really ugly game.
- 1:00:36Alright, another thing you've mentioned it in both sides of
- 1:00:39the ball earlier. It's about being undisciplined
- 1:00:43about making miscues and its penalties.
- 1:00:45Last year out of 131 teams, they were eight hundred and second in
- 1:00:49penalty yards last year. That is bad.
- 1:00:53They were a team when they were at home, where most teams do not
- 1:00:57have a higher penalty because you're playing at home.
- 1:01:01Usually get phone calls, usually build more in a control.
- 1:01:05They averaged almost eight a game at home last year and then
- 1:01:09their losses 78 yards of penalties in the average for
- 1:01:16each of their seven losses. And even in the games they won,
- 1:01:22they still are averaging 60 yards.
- 1:01:25If this team steps on the field Friday and you tell me they're
- 1:01:28going to give eight penalties for 80 yards.
- 1:01:32Regardless of what side of the ball is all.
- 1:01:34If you say, you split it right down the middle, you're going to
- 1:01:36give us an extra 40 yards on offense.
- 1:01:39That's at least an extra two scores in my opinion.
- 1:01:41And if you do it, 40 yards on defense.
- 1:01:43There's going to be a turnover in there somewhere because
- 1:01:46you're going to get dialed up with a ton of pressure.
- 1:01:50Yeah, I think you're right there and I think that's, that's the
- 1:01:52problem that they had last year. We'll see.
- 1:01:55If that any of that has been cleaned up heading into this
- 1:01:58season. You know, they have the same
- 1:02:01coordinator on defense. I don't know if that necessarily
- 1:02:03is speaking to their own discipline, this or anything
- 1:02:05like that, but we'll see if that is something that has been
- 1:02:10remedied since that point, but they were as, as undisciplined
- 1:02:14is any team, you will see last year, especially on the
- 1:02:18defensive side of the ball. And I think those first two
- 1:02:21things. The first thing is obviously
- 1:02:24something the Hokies defense is looking at the penalties are
- 1:02:27kind of all over the place, right?
- 1:02:29Offensive and defensive side, he can affect both parts of the
- 1:02:32game, but when you see things like that, my immediate thought
- 1:02:37is even if you're keeping the same player, or the same
- 1:02:40coordinators to have the same players.
- 1:02:42Normally, you do not see drastic turnarounds in turnovers and, or
- 1:02:48penalties from one, you That usually those are the very
- 1:02:51gradual you go from the turnover margin being - 82.
- 1:02:58Okay now we're - 3 now. We're even now we're in the plus
- 1:03:02territory, same with penalties. You don't go from the just about
- 1:03:06the bottom. Two above middle of the pack in
- 1:03:09one season because a lot of times the players you have or
- 1:03:11the who you're returning and it's a cultural thing.
- 1:03:14So, those two I cannot see in the last thing we've talked
- 1:03:19about with the Hokies, Skis. Is there passing defense?
- 1:03:23And I know you said to of their better players are on the back
- 1:03:26end, but you've mentioned all night.
- 1:03:29You mentioned it up top, they don't have the pass rush.
- 1:03:33You can get double moves behind them even though they have a
- 1:03:35couple good players there because of no pass rush, they
- 1:03:40can't get that done. And last year it showed, you
- 1:03:42know, they gave up 264 yards a game through the air.
- 1:03:47You know, they basically only forced Seven interceptions in 13
- 1:03:52games in, if you look at the Sun Belt last year, right?
- 1:03:56No Conference USA Labour Conference USA, less relevant,
- 1:03:58USA Sunbelt this year. Yep.
- 1:04:01How many of those offensive run some sort of high-level passing
- 1:04:04game in to say you guys seven? Yes I mean it takes in one of
- 1:04:09the most as oriented leagues in a country.
- 1:04:12I mean Western Kentucky will only run just because you know
- 1:04:16just really want to do something different.
- 1:04:20I think they had like 12 total rushes in the game I watch.
- 1:04:23So I mean they don't run but they it's a lot of quick release
- 1:04:28stuff and you know, constantly again shooting themselves in the
- 1:04:33foot. They don't do a good job getting
- 1:04:36after the quarterback. And while they have one or two
- 1:04:41guys that are really good in coverage the area's elsewhere,
- 1:04:47they struggle. So it's kind of a mixed bag.
- 1:04:50Secondary, you got some really good players, some really high
- 1:04:53level players. And then the couple guys that
- 1:04:55are not very high level, you mix that with no pass rush.
- 1:04:59That's a recipe for disaster. And when I say, no passwords,
- 1:05:02folks, 23, and a half sacks for 13 games last year, that's less
- 1:05:07than two again. So on top of that, very little
- 1:05:13picks, its why? I looked at saying their past
- 1:05:15defense is a key, why is it a key?
- 1:05:17We have a guy like Grant Wells, who did play them, who did not
- 1:05:20play his best game against them but after that game against
- 1:05:24them, he cleaned up the rest of the seasons and did not have any
- 1:05:27more than two picks in any other game.
- 1:05:30So, you know, I we calculate all this.
- 1:05:34We start looking at the Players, we look at our players coaches
- 1:05:39and stuff. Like that.
- 1:05:40And you know, lo and behold it's time to predict this game, Ron
- 1:05:46Yeah, and I'll lead off here, you know, I think this is a
- 1:05:51statement game for the Brent pry era and I think that the Hokies
- 1:05:56are focused, they are ready to prove some doubters wrong and I
- 1:06:02think they come out there and they handle business in Norfolk.
- 1:06:05I've got the Hokies winning 41 to 17 All right, I am exactly
- 1:06:13with you, actually, when we, when we, when we talked about
- 1:06:17this yesterday, we were like Promised Land.
- 1:06:20Like, what's yours? What's your score, Brian?
- 1:06:22He's like, 4170. I'm like, son of a bitch.
- 1:06:25He looked at him, like, he's like what?
- 1:06:27I'm like. See exactly where I am.
- 1:06:29I'm in 4117 vt4, a lot of the reasons and I think a lot of
- 1:06:34those reasons, are you say statement game?
- 1:06:37And when you started talking about Hayden wolf in those
- 1:06:39players, they've Two good players that don't get me wrong.
- 1:06:43If they get the ball to them, they're going to make a little
- 1:06:45noise. But know, when a guy's is Statue
- 1:06:48Norwood, Brent prize going to do, he's going to have to get
- 1:06:51that ball released quicker than he ever has in his in his tenure
- 1:06:56as quarterback of. I think that's a big piece and
- 1:07:00also think the upside of having the Grant Wells with us this
- 1:07:04year, I guarantee you Tyler. Bowling walked in that room.
- 1:07:09Prep can just said Let's look at it because they're really not
- 1:07:13changing a lot about this game. We've got some more weapons.
- 1:07:16We got a better offensive line here.
- 1:07:19Wish, we had Malachi Thomas because I think we would really
- 1:07:21run it down their throat but I think the defense is going to
- 1:07:24dictate this game a lot and I think the defense is going to be
- 1:07:27so dating it that we're going to take some risks and I think
- 1:07:31we're going to hit on a few risks early and I think as your
- 1:07:35hope hanging out over here in the man cave Friday night, I
- 1:07:37think for supporter take a couple shots.
- 1:07:42And wrap the game up at 4117. Yeah, I mean, you talked about
- 1:07:48what wells did against this defense last year when he was
- 1:07:52playing with Marshall, wasn't his best game in terms of his
- 1:07:55interceptions but he had an efficient night.
- 1:07:59Yeah. In terms of yardage and
- 1:08:01completion percentage, he was Thirty or forty six for 299.
- 1:08:04He had two touchdowns, he threw two picks.
- 1:08:06You'd like to see at least one of those taken off the board
- 1:08:10with 46 attempts. Right?
- 1:08:13So, but, you know, one interception in 4406 of Not bad
- 1:08:17to, you know, especially sometimes when they happen, not
- 1:08:21necessarily. If they happen, it's kind of you
- 1:08:23know, what kind of Shades one game, you know, One Direction or
- 1:08:26another, but he's sweaty slung, the ball all over the field,
- 1:08:30just they couldn't finish a lot of drives last year, and that
- 1:08:34was the big, the big difference in that game being Marshal kind
- 1:08:39of walking away with it and having to get a touchdown and
- 1:08:42over time to seal it. Exactly.
- 1:08:44So again, we both predict a Tech wins, 4117, take take lady,
- 1:08:50eight and a half because I think with also with the turmoil,
- 1:08:54going down there with the brand new offensive coordinator and
- 1:08:58you know obviously Ricky Ronnie knows Brent, prize defense and
- 1:09:02is bad as we want to say we're down we're not deep.
- 1:09:06There are some talented players on that defense that will I
- 1:09:10think keep them under control. All right, Brian.
- 1:09:14So let's go one more segment here before you wrap up tonight
- 1:09:17and is what we are going to call.
- 1:09:19Big screeners. As it's been discussed on this
- 1:09:22program before I have a man cave set-up with three TVs.
- 1:09:27If you have three TVs or less, if you have less than three TVs,
- 1:09:34you're not doing it right in a man cave because there's no way
- 1:09:36you can actually pay attention. There's no way you can have fun
- 1:09:39on college football, Saturdays. Now, mr.
- 1:09:43C glistens. These purchases told and he is
- 1:09:46currently sitting in his man cave as I am sitting in mind.
- 1:09:50He also As a three TV set up now for Brian because Brian's a
- 1:09:55little more texted me. He has a couple of big screens
- 1:09:59and then he streams one off of his big monitors right there.
- 1:10:03So we're calling a big screeners because at some point, the games
- 1:10:08we discuss, right here, non-tech games are sort of a big screen
- 1:10:12games that are going to be on the big screens.
- 1:10:15And Brian, I know you want me to lead.
- 1:10:16This actually tell everybody what your setup is.
- 1:10:21Just so they know. All right, so right here, I've
- 1:10:25got a sixty five incher. Yeah, TCL is getting the Roku
- 1:10:31and it I've got another 40 inch Roku above me here, that can
- 1:10:36rotate from either straight above me or to a little caddy
- 1:10:40position. Next to the big, big one here
- 1:10:43and then I've got a 32-inch, ultrawide monitor that I am
- 1:10:48currently looking at you guys on.
- 1:10:51So, And and battle. That's my third screen, Curtis.
- 1:10:56Let them know what you got. Well, I'm sitting here with a 60
- 1:11:00inch and then 232 is above. And I am going to say this
- 1:11:04Brian's little swivel monitor. I know, I inspired that because
- 1:11:08both of the 32 inches in the man cave, our own swivels.
- 1:11:11So if I'm ever eating at the, at the bar table back here and I
- 1:11:16want to pay attention to that game.
- 1:11:18I just slightly swivel, it over here or during the season.
- 1:11:22And when we get that Maxon in those Sunbelt games on Tuesday
- 1:11:25nights that TV right there will be swiveled right here directly.
- 1:11:29So I do not miss Now when it comes to the big screeners,
- 1:11:34what's the game that I'm looking at?
- 1:11:36In kind of looking at this? From a betting line, we used to
- 1:11:39do picks last year when you're only doing one episode a week,
- 1:11:42you got to cut time because next week, at this time, we're
- 1:11:45recapping ODU and then prepping from BC.
- 1:11:48So, what my big screen or game this year?
- 1:11:50Or this week is, I'm looking at the Georgia.
- 1:11:54Oregon game down in Atlanta, Chick-fil-A kickoff, 3:30,
- 1:11:57Saturday afternoon. And George is coming off a
- 1:12:00massive National Championship with, you know, it really was
- 1:12:05with, you know, unbelievable sort of turn back.
- 1:12:08The clock clock style defense, which a shit ton of those guys
- 1:12:13went to the NFL and I know it's more than any team ever more
- 1:12:17than any team. In some of those guys played
- 1:12:25last year. But I also know on the offensive
- 1:12:27side of the ball Stetson Bennett isn't exactly a fighter pilot
- 1:12:32quarterback. He is a bus driver in last year
- 1:12:35with guys like George Pickens and James Cook.
- 1:12:39It was easier for the bus driver to look like a home.
- 1:12:42Run to look like a fighter power, to be honest.
- 1:12:45When I look at this game, organ has a good offensive line, Dan
- 1:12:49Landing, you Georgia defensive coordinators back out, his went
- 1:12:52out there to be a coach. They have a good number of
- 1:12:54returning starters. It, when I originally saw this
- 1:12:58game, I'm like, my expectation is, I think Georgia probably is
- 1:13:01going to win the game, probably by somewhere between eight and
- 1:13:03ten points when this line came open at 17 and a half.
- 1:13:09I just could, I'm trying to figure out, is, is Vegas?
- 1:13:14Looking at how many people left? Yes, I know they're playing in
- 1:13:16Atlanta and it's going to be a T20 Georgia fans, but 17 and a
- 1:13:21half to lay on a 10-1 team. Last year, that has a good
- 1:13:24offensive line when the Georgia defense, lost, its best players
- 1:13:28on the offensive line and the second level.
- 1:13:31I can't see that. Georgia May win the game but
- 1:13:35giving organ and give me the 17 and a half points because that's
- 1:13:39way too much to lay against a good team.
- 1:13:43Yeah. The 17 and a half line is where
- 1:13:45I'm question. If you were saying, I think if
- 1:13:48you if this a moneyline question you pick Georgia.
- 1:13:51Yes. When you got that big of a line
- 1:13:5517 and half is just too much. I know there's a lot of
- 1:13:59differences with that Oregon team coming in obviously their
- 1:14:03head coach is now down there in in Miami but this is still a
- 1:14:10solid Talent. Roster that is still coming in
- 1:14:15there. I don't think it's going to be a
- 1:14:17runaway for Georgia for the reasons you mentioned.
- 1:14:20The loss of town. I think they definitely reload.
- 1:14:23I don't think we see a significant drop off but we'll
- 1:14:26see enough of a drop-off especially week one for them to
- 1:14:31not be able to, you know, blow the doors, blow the doors off of
- 1:14:35a very solid organ. Team, that's my big Stringer.
- 1:14:39What's your big screen? You know, I kind of This around
- 1:14:43a couple different ways but ultimately landed on Utah, going
- 1:14:50to the swamp and facing the Gators.
- 1:14:54I was I was leaning towards the Backyard Brawl, it's on a
- 1:14:58Thursday night, it's two, it's two teams we play, it is two
- 1:15:03teams we play, but I don't think that is Marquise enough of a
- 1:15:08matchup in the big picture for it to Be a big screener.
- 1:15:14Obviously, since they're on different nights technically,
- 1:15:16they're both going to be big screeners but if I had to pick
- 1:15:20between the two, I would put Utah and Florida on there.
- 1:15:23And when I look at this game, you know, Utah is the the road
- 1:15:30favorite and it's minus 3. I'm going to, I'm going to still
- 1:15:38tell you Tha here. I think Utah is probably the To
- 1:15:42come out of the Pac-12. I think they are based on their
- 1:15:46record if they can get past this matchup that you're going to be
- 1:15:49a favorite team to make the college football playoff.
- 1:15:53So I like Utah here. I think it's probably still a
- 1:15:58high one score low to score game but I think they're going at
- 1:16:02least cover that three. Yeah, I'm kind of with you on
- 1:16:06that Utah returns a ton on just it for the team in general.
- 1:16:13And obviously the last thing we can remember from them last
- 1:16:16year's they kind of had a bitter taste in her mouth losing that
- 1:16:18game to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, right?
- 1:16:20All Spy field gold and basically Secondary was absolutely
- 1:16:24decimated. Yep.
- 1:16:27And they were having running back to play quarterback and
- 1:16:29safety. That's when you're in real
- 1:16:31Prospect early, planting like Ohio, State and the other piece
- 1:16:35is we don't know what Florida is yet under billing date.
- 1:16:38It's very early in the process. We've seen that team,
- 1:16:41underperformed the last few years.
- 1:16:44So to say, you have to open and now luckily, it is in the swamp.
- 1:16:49to me, if I'm looking at this game and I'm looking through I'm
- 1:16:53sort of looking through Vegas eyes to say you're giving three
- 1:16:57points on the home, will every home team?
- 1:17:00Should always get three points, right?
- 1:17:03So they're basically the and the swamp is probably probably good
- 1:17:06for five. Yeah.
- 1:17:08So basically, you know, they are really, really saying Utah's.
- 1:17:12Gonna win this game by more and, you know, or we shocked at
- 1:17:19Florida plays out of the 90 Napier's, a good coach and got
- 1:17:21talent, but One of those things where Kyle willingham's defense
- 1:17:25to, I think everybody's talking about the quarterback down in
- 1:17:28Florida, making some noise and it's like you're you're going to
- 1:17:33go against. Yeah, they're going to be saying
- 1:17:35it's the Pac-12 defense. If you see the way pack
- 1:17:38Willingham coaches, his defense is they hit hard.
- 1:17:40They don't play like a Pac-12 peanuts, they don't Implement
- 1:17:45me, they play more like an SEC team.
- 1:17:47That's so, you know, I'm kind of with you.
- 1:17:50It's gonna be interesting watching those games but it It's
- 1:17:53all weekend in general, man. I mean Thursday night, you
- 1:17:55mentioned backyard, brawls and kick it 7, sneaky sneaky Purdue
- 1:18:00Penn State. Penn State first game without
- 1:18:04Brent prai has to go to Jeff brohm in that offense.
- 1:18:08I mean they can easily come out 011.
- 1:18:12Yeah. Blinky.
- 1:18:15And then, you know, get into Saturday Arkansas, Cincinnati.
- 1:18:21And then the other game that we didn't put on a big screen or a
- 1:18:24because I can't figure that game out.
- 1:18:27Ohio State Notre Dame on Saturday night.
- 1:18:30I can't sleep because it's another big line and it's kind
- 1:18:34of like, well, you know how the state is a high-powered offense,
- 1:18:39it's in the shoe, it's unlike game.
- 1:18:42It's also a good matchups, LSU FSU, Sunday night.
- 1:18:45I mean, it's here we get five straight days of college
- 1:18:48football, man. And I'll say this about the
- 1:18:50Notre Dame, Ohio State game in the reason.
- 1:18:52I didn't call that my big screener is because Ohio,
- 1:18:58State's the heavy favorite in Ohio State could still lose that
- 1:19:01game and still make the college football playoff.
- 1:19:04Whereas, you look at Utah who is a kind of Dark Horse favorite to
- 1:19:09make the college football. Playoff if a Who's the Florida,
- 1:19:12especially if they lose badly to Florida there out there out so
- 1:19:16that that's kind of the difference there.
- 1:19:18I get that 110%. All right, Braun.
- 1:19:21I know there's some things breaking.
- 1:19:24I'm not going to discuss them because I'd eat you read into
- 1:19:26that more Jacob, uh, shout-out. I see your message.
- 1:19:31We're not putting it up there a because if it's in 24/7, it
- 1:19:36could be behind a pay wall. We also don't know if it's going
- 1:19:39to impact anything, we don't really know.
- 1:19:41Don't know what it is. We're going to have to go
- 1:19:43literally read this and talk about this after we go off in
- 1:19:46just a second here. But if nothing else is breaking
