- 0:00Speaker 1: Training Camp Cast.
- 0:05Speaker 2: The Patriots Training Camp Cast is your source for all
- 0:07Speaker 2: the news from Patriots training Camp.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:14Speaker 3: have you covered?
- 0:15Speaker 4: What did I miss yesterday? Now here to review today's practice?
- 0:18Speaker 1: The writers of Patriots dot com.
- 0:20Speaker 3: All right, thirteen practices in the books. Welcome into the
- 0:24Speaker 3: Patriots Training Camp Cast. I'm Mike you So, joined by
- 0:26Speaker 3: Evan Lazar and Paul Parillo and guys. We had a
- 0:28Speaker 3: little bit of a downshift today as the team gets
- 0:30Speaker 3: ready to face the Eagles. We heard from the defensive
- 0:33Speaker 3: coaches beforehand. Talked a little bit to them. I think
- 0:37Speaker 3: cornerback's probably a position maybe we should talk about just depth.
- 0:39Speaker 3: That seems like they're getting, you know, a little banged
- 0:40Speaker 3: up there. But otherwise some situational works, some like get
- 0:44Speaker 3: off our own goal line kind of stuff. Some red
- 0:46Speaker 3: zone stuff to me felt like more of the same
- 0:49Speaker 3: kind of you know, a couple plays here and there,
- 0:51Speaker 3: but you know, continues to kind of be up and down,
- 0:53Speaker 3: and you see Demorrio Douglas again. He continues to stand
- 0:55Speaker 3: out as a guy who is probably he has taken
- 0:57Speaker 3: over from Jalen Polk is the most consistent receiver.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Polly, I'll let you go first.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Well, I think saying that's mostly what we've seen is
- 1:08Speaker 2: probably the best way to put it. It's not to
- 1:10Speaker 2: say that it's been overly good or overly bad in
- 1:13Speaker 2: either direction. It's just we're in that part of training
- 1:16Speaker 2: camp now where we have so much data of all
- 1:18Speaker 2: the things that we've seen that it would be something
- 1:21Speaker 2: pretty crazy that we haven't seen already. If all of
- 1:24Speaker 2: a sudden it was like this practice where the offense
- 1:27Speaker 2: looks like the oh seven Patriots and they're just lighting
- 1:29Speaker 2: it up. We haven't seen that yet. We also haven't
- 1:31Speaker 2: seen them look like a complete disaster either, So I
- 1:34Speaker 2: think offensively, what I'm looking forward to with the next
- 1:36Speaker 2: couple of days with the Eagles joint practice and then
- 1:39Speaker 2: hopefully some more action for the ones and twos in
- 1:41Speaker 2: the game on Thursday night is how much some of
- 1:43Speaker 2: the stuff that they're trying to do schematically starts to
- 1:46Speaker 2: work against another opponent. At this point, it feels like
- 1:49Speaker 2: the defense has seen everything in Avp's rollodex, So are
- 1:53Speaker 2: you really going to be all that surprised by that
- 1:54Speaker 2: bootleg or this fake there or that formation or whatever,
- 1:58Speaker 2: probably not at this point of the summer. So maybe
- 2:01Speaker 2: the Eagles coming in, we'll see if some of those
- 2:03Speaker 2: things are going to take to take to fruition and
- 2:06Speaker 2: be a little bit more productive than what we've seen
- 2:08Speaker 2: in practice.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Yeah, And I do think that's a big part of it.
- 2:11Speaker 4: I think the defense is sort of sitting on a
- 2:12Speaker 4: lot of stuff right now. There weren't a lot of
- 2:14Speaker 4: completions today of any kind short even the short ones
- 2:17Speaker 4: that they generally do. Some of those were getting knocked away.
- 2:20Speaker 4: A screen pass got knocked away today. So yeah, the
- 2:24Speaker 4: bigger thing to me is not necessarily about the offensive execution.
- 2:28Speaker 4: To me, it's the whole operation that continues to be
- 2:30Speaker 4: a problem on both sides of the ball. The defense
- 2:32Speaker 4: sent for laps twice for having ten men on the field,
- 2:35Speaker 4: you know, prior to a snap, and then a couple
- 2:38Speaker 4: of fall starts again, you know, a couple of realignments again.
- 2:41Speaker 4: So and Jacoby Brissett talked after practice. He mentioned that
- 2:45Speaker 4: as something he really wants to see cleaned up a
- 2:47Speaker 4: little bit in the joint practice tomorrow against Philadelphia.
- 2:50Speaker 3: So that's what we're all of course waiting for me
- 2:52Speaker 3: and that kind of changing things. We'll see some different competition.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Of course, excited to see some of the Eagles guys,
- 2:56Speaker 3: just going back real quick guys to the defensive coaches,
- 2:59Speaker 3: it's always, you know, kind of scattershot. They throw these
- 3:01Speaker 3: you know, six seven coaches at you and you run around.
- 3:04Speaker 3: You talk to this guy, you talk to that guy.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I floated around a little bit, you know. Jerry Montgomery,
- 3:08Speaker 3: the defensive line coach. I know you talked to him,
- 3:10Speaker 3: Evan about Jeremiah Farms, who's you know, had a little
- 3:13Speaker 3: bit of a moment here over the last couple of
- 3:14Speaker 3: days with his performance coming out of the game.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it was really complimentary of Farms and Oceane Zimmon.
- 3:19Speaker 2: He's saying they're taking what they're doing on the practice
- 3:21Speaker 2: field and bringing it into a game last Thursday night.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So that's always good to see. When you have those
- 3:26Speaker 2: players that flash in the game but aren't flashing in practices,
- 3:29Speaker 2: you always wonder if that's going to be consistent and
- 3:31Speaker 2: if they're gonna be able to do it week in
- 3:33Speaker 2: and week out. Whereas those two guys have been good
- 3:36Speaker 2: in practice, now they're been good in a preseason game.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So I think he's hopeful that they're going to be
- 3:40Speaker 2: able to contribute to this team, and the coaches on
- 3:43Speaker 2: the defensive side of the ball, they didn't really dodge
- 3:46Speaker 2: the fact that Christian Barmore is not here and he's
- 3:49Speaker 2: not walking through that door. It doesn't sound like anytime soon,
- 3:52Speaker 2: and they realize that that is a big, big hole
- 3:56Speaker 2: in the middle of the defense. So I'm not saying
- 3:57Speaker 2: that Jeremiah Farms is going to be Christian Barmore and
- 4:00Speaker 2: he's going to do it all on his own. But
- 4:01Speaker 2: these are some of the guys that, in terms of
- 4:04Speaker 2: where they play on the field but also pass rush production,
- 4:06Speaker 2: that they might need to step up to replace Barmore.
- 4:09Speaker 4: I think a guy like Keon White is going to
- 4:11Speaker 4: have to play a big, a big, big role, and
- 4:13Speaker 4: we keep seeing him with that first group that starts
- 4:16Speaker 4: off a lot of these a lot of these team periods.
- 4:18Speaker 4: And I do think that because Evans right, Farms is
- 4:22Speaker 4: a good story. He's a run stuffer, though he's not
- 4:24Speaker 4: necessarily a guy that even though he flashed in the game,
- 4:26Speaker 4: he had nice sack in the game, I don't think
- 4:29Speaker 4: that's necessarily what he's going to make is living doing
- 4:32Speaker 4: same with Tristan Hill, if he's a guy that ends
- 4:35Speaker 4: up sticking around. He's been around four or five years.
- 4:38Speaker 4: He has like one and a half career sacks. Keon
- 4:40Speaker 4: White's a guy that I do think has the ability
- 4:42Speaker 4: to maybe be more of a hybrid kind of a player.
- 4:45Speaker 4: We'll see, you know, we have We're gonna have to
- 4:47Speaker 4: see it during the regular season, but I think he
- 4:49Speaker 4: might be a guy that can eat up some of
- 4:51Speaker 4: those reps.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I think Daniel Quality to me, is another one who's
- 4:53Speaker 3: a kind of interior guy. Filled in for far more
- 4:56Speaker 3: a couple of years ago. He should be in that
- 4:58Speaker 3: mix as well. It's just, you know, somehow keeping things first.
- 5:00Speaker 3: No Hunter Henry today. He was seeming like a little
- 5:02Speaker 3: nicked up yesterday saw him getting looked at. Did not practice. Fortunately.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Sean Wade, who had a good game the other night,
- 5:07Speaker 3: I thought, is now back out of practice. He was
- 5:09Speaker 3: in a red jersey for a big portion of camp.
- 5:11Speaker 3: But the two pieces I want to just you know,
- 5:13Speaker 3: talk about cornerback Jonathan Jones. Don't know if he's hurt,
- 5:16Speaker 3: if they're just managing him. Didn't participate today. Marcus Jones
- 5:20Speaker 3: has now been out for it feels like you know,
- 5:22Speaker 3: going on going back a week and a half, almost
- 5:24Speaker 3: he hasn't participated. Alex Austin, Marco Wilson getting a lot
- 5:27Speaker 3: of opportunities. We heard from Marco Wilson today after practice,
- 5:30Speaker 3: Isaiah Bolden in the slot. It just seems like, other
- 5:32Speaker 3: than Christian Gonzalez, they continue to kind of scramble and
- 5:35Speaker 3: try to find a combination works.
- 5:37Speaker 4: And you mentioned that we got a chance to talk
- 5:39Speaker 4: to the coaches, Mike Pelagreen over cornerbacks. Coach didn't really
- 5:42Speaker 4: seem all that concerned, you know, about the guys missing
- 5:45Speaker 4: or about the depth in general. I continue to think
- 5:49Speaker 4: that that is an enormous concern that, you know, those
- 5:52Speaker 4: guys beyond Gonzales and Jonathan Jones, do they have answers?
- 5:57Speaker 4: And you know, we'll find out now. I do think
- 6:00Speaker 4: one thing that pel Agrino said today about those guys
- 6:02Speaker 4: that I agree with is there's some versatility with the group.
- 6:05Speaker 4: You know, we've seen Bolden, we've seen Wilson, We've seen
- 6:08Speaker 4: these guys play inside outside. They can do some different
- 6:11Speaker 4: than Alex Austin. I think DeMarcus Comington actually singled out
- 6:14Speaker 4: as another guy that can do some of those things.
- 6:17Speaker 4: So I do think there's some versatility back there. I'm
- 6:19Speaker 4: not sure there's an answer back there.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good way of putting it. With their system,
- 6:23Speaker 2: I always feel like their coaches just believe in what
- 6:27Speaker 2: they're doing from a coverage standpoint, and we've seen it
- 6:30Speaker 2: over the years, and I know we're going to have
- 6:32Speaker 2: to see if this continues post Belichick, that they're able
- 6:35Speaker 2: to just pluck these corners, you know, udfa's late round
- 6:38Speaker 2: picks and things like that, and make them into viable players.
- 6:43Speaker 2: But they're running the same coverage system, they're coaching the
- 6:45Speaker 2: same techniques. The cornerbacks and safeties coach are the same
- 6:49Speaker 2: two guys, So in theory, it shouldn't be all that
- 6:52Speaker 2: different if they can continue to do it from a
- 6:54Speaker 2: talent evaluation standpoint, And I feel like maybe that's where
- 6:57Speaker 2: some of the confidence from Pellegrino come from, where it's like, well,
- 7:01Speaker 2: we've had years like this before where guys start to
- 7:03Speaker 2: go down and it's, you know, some random guy that
- 7:06Speaker 2: comes along and we're able to sort of round him
- 7:08Speaker 2: out and turn him into a decent player. So Marco
- 7:11Speaker 2: Wilson's not a random guy. He's been in the League
- 7:13Speaker 2: a little bit, but he's someone that definitely has stood
- 7:17Speaker 2: out in terms of usage on the field, starting the
- 7:19Speaker 2: game on Thursday night, playing with the ones a lot
- 7:22Speaker 2: in Proud. Yeah, plays press pretty well on the outside,
- 7:27Speaker 2: but it can also play a little bit off the
- 7:28Speaker 2: line of scrimmage too and do some different things there.
- 7:31Speaker 2: So I feel like he's probably pushing Alex Austin right
- 7:35Speaker 2: now as the two guys ce befour CB five types.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And then I still believe that Isaiah Bolden's going to
- 7:42Speaker 2: be here, but that might just be to cover kicks
- 7:45Speaker 2: in return kicks more than it is going to be
- 7:47Speaker 2: primarily to play on defense.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Yeah, well, those guys will have their hands full tomorrow.
- 7:51Speaker 3: We're expecting aj Brown, DeVante Smith. We all know the Phillies.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Weapons that will you know, give us something new to
- 7:56Speaker 3: look at, guys, just real quick, last thing, I mean
- 7:58Speaker 3: anything tomorrow. You're just kind of curious about it. I mean,
- 8:00Speaker 3: you know, Eagles have plenty of talent, and it's certainly
- 8:02Speaker 3: I mean i'd start with their defensive line and house
- 8:05Speaker 3: the Patriots offensive line.
- 8:06Speaker 4: That's a good one. I like the way Evan said it,
- 8:08Speaker 4: just to sort of see how they stack up. Against
- 8:10Speaker 4: another scheme, you know, a different group of players that
- 8:12Speaker 4: maybe isn't going to be sitting on every play action
- 8:15Speaker 4: bootleg and seeing how it looks. But I think the
- 8:18Speaker 4: offensive line is a good area to focus.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's always where I start with these joint practices.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Is your base plays are they working? Are you designing
- 8:26Speaker 2: them properly in the way that can beid a defense
- 8:30Speaker 2: to bite on a play action fake or misdirection or
- 8:33Speaker 2: something like that. But the other one I would just
- 8:35Speaker 2: look at is Christian Gonzalez because we've all said it
- 8:38Speaker 2: and we've all talked about it a little bit. Were
- 8:40Speaker 2: all kind of like tiptoeing around being like, has he
- 8:42Speaker 2: had a bad summer as he not. I don't think
- 8:44Speaker 2: he's had a bad summer, but he's definitely given up
- 8:47Speaker 2: more catches in this camp than he did his rookie year.
- 8:50Speaker 2: You mentioned those two receivers that are coming in now
- 8:52Speaker 2: with the Eagles. He faced them in Week one last year,
- 8:55Speaker 2: did a pretty good job, all things considered for a
- 8:57Speaker 2: rookie in his first time out against AJ Brown. Hey,
- 9:00Speaker 2: let's see what it looks like in practice tomorrow against
- 9:03Speaker 2: Brown and DeVante Smith, Because if it's up and down again.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Then I think I'm more on Paul's side of the
- 9:08Speaker 2: street with the cornerbacks, where it's like, not so sure
- 9:11Speaker 2: about this group. Now, if he's Gonzales like he was
- 9:13Speaker 2: in his first month as a rookie, then the whole
- 9:16Speaker 2: thing fits much better together.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Well.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Pictures on filter will be live during joint practice camp,
- 9:21Speaker 3: so if you're unable to make it down here, which
- 9:23Speaker 3: if you are, please do. But if you're not, tune
- 9:25Speaker 3: in on Patriots dot com you can hear us speaking
- 9:27Speaker 3: throughout the practice and then of course we'll come back
- 9:30Speaker 3: in here and I believe it will be our last
- 9:31Speaker 3: training camp cast, which is pretty crazy. Two games still
- 9:34Speaker 3: to go, so plenty of more content coming your way.
- 9:37Speaker 3: We're excited to see, though, tomorrow how the Patriots hold
- 9:39Speaker 3: up and join practices against the Eagles.
