- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:07Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth and Lazar.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Hello, everybody nailed it, Joined as always by our bar Gas.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars.
- 0:20Speaker 2: But another team's coach on the downs l In.
- 0:23Speaker 1: A coach that comes from the Shanahan mcveag tree. Nonetheless,
- 0:26Speaker 1: sort of.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I'm not ready to claim. I'm he worked for Sean
- 0:30Speaker 2: McVeigh for like two years.
- 0:32Speaker 1: No, I'm sorry. If you're gonna do this, you're gonna
- 0:34Speaker 1: do this.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Because he doesn't he doesn't run the system. He doesn't
- 0:37Speaker 2: run the system. He comes from the tree. Evan, this
- 0:42Speaker 2: is one of your guys, Zach Taylor. We look at
- 0:46Speaker 2: the care when I say this, Zach Taylor. Yeah, bum.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I feel like maybe we got a little bit over
- 0:56Speaker 2: our skis with calling the Bengals coach of bum at
- 0:59Speaker 2: one to know it was.
- 1:01Speaker 1: No, no, we didn't know. We do not no no
- 1:04Speaker 1: no no no no no no. Do not backtrack on that.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Backtrack be accountable, Evan, I'm not back to be accountable.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I'm not back that people.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Heard our conversation.
- 1:13Speaker 2: We we we were one hundred percent right about what
- 1:17Speaker 2: we said about Zach Taylor. With that being said, coming
- 1:21Speaker 2: into this show here today, I have some gripes with
- 1:26Speaker 2: the Patriots coaching staff the same way that I did
- 1:29Speaker 2: with Zach Taylor. So I just want to be fair,
- 1:31Speaker 2: all right, A fair is fair right now. At that
- 1:33Speaker 2: being said, you were late and that's why we're late,
- 1:37Speaker 2: and I when one of us is late, we can't
- 1:41Speaker 2: not call out each other, is true, So I don't
- 1:44Speaker 2: want to spend too much time. I was sad that
- 1:46Speaker 2: you were late, but I do want to explain to
- 1:48Speaker 2: the great listeners out there.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I got when I left the house, I was watching
- 1:53Speaker 1: the traffic and it said like three forty five, three
- 1:56Speaker 1: forty eight whatever ETA. I was like, that's great. I
- 1:58Speaker 1: get in the car, I drive like two minutes. Suddenly
- 2:00Speaker 1: it jumps to four oh four and I'm like, eh,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I don't know what is something on ninety three. But yes,
- 2:05Speaker 1: that is why we are late. But as a treat again,
- 2:07Speaker 1: I think the people got to hear me mad at
- 2:09Speaker 1: myself before the show.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Well that's good because you were late, so that people
- 2:13Speaker 2: should know that. Anyways, let's get into it. Evan was
- 2:17Speaker 2: our Alex Barth because he didn't know for like already
- 2:19Speaker 2: talking for ten minutes, Patriots catch twenty two. Here with
- 2:23Speaker 2: you for the next couple of hours. We've got to
- 2:25Speaker 2: end a little bit early today just because we have
- 2:27Speaker 2: to get out to practice. Weird schedule today with the
- 2:30Speaker 2: Thursday night game, so practice is at six pm. It's
- 2:33Speaker 2: gonna be a one hour light walkthrough style practice, but
- 2:38Speaker 2: there are gonna be We're gonna be able to take
- 2:40Speaker 2: attendance and do our usual thing out there. No Evan
- 2:43Speaker 2: is back from practice though, because of the weird schedule
- 2:45Speaker 2: and that we need.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Evan is on the way to practice.
- 2:48Speaker 2: That's true, we needed a new song. But hey, Patriots fans,
- 2:51Speaker 2: if you want to see Toyota's best offers, including those
- 2:53Speaker 2: not seen on TV, go to byotota dot com. It's Toyota.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Is it Toyota or Toyota? How do you say Toyotyoda?
- 3:00Speaker 2: What Toyota Toyota? Right?
- 3:02Speaker 1: I mean I think a lot of people say Toyotada,
- 3:05Speaker 1: just like Lazily. It should be Toyota.
- 3:07Speaker 2: People say I say it weird. Say it again, Toyota.
- 3:10Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 3:11Speaker 2: It's Toyota's official website for dealers.
- 3:14Speaker 1: New England, right, Like, did you put the emphasis on
- 3:17Speaker 1: the toy on the toy Toyota, Toyota Toyota.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Second, that's how we say it here.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I put the the I never really thought about it.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Uh. It's Toyota's official website for deals for the official
- 3:30Speaker 2: vehicle of the New England Patriots, Toyota Let's go places
- 3:34Speaker 2: and easy to drink, easy to enjoy bud like the
- 3:36Speaker 2: official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots. All Right,
- 3:39Speaker 2: so I want to start while looking back on the
- 3:41Speaker 2: Seahawks game, and then we will obviously talk about the
- 3:45Speaker 2: New York Jets the first time against Aaron Rodgers in
- 3:48Speaker 2: the Jets uniform, which is I'm looking forward to it.
- 3:51Speaker 2: It's got a little bit of juice. It's a Thursday
- 3:53Speaker 2: night game, it's a primetime game. We don't have a
- 3:55Speaker 2: ton of those this year, so it's nice. It's gonna
- 3:58Speaker 2: be fun. I'm looking forward to it. But before I'll
- 4:02Speaker 2: spend the first hour here or so talking about the Seahawks,
- 4:04Speaker 2: and I have two big picture takeaways off the top,
- 4:08Speaker 2: one offense, one defense. I want to go defense first,
- 4:11Speaker 2: and then we're gonna talk about each one of them separately. Okay,
- 4:14Speaker 2: all right, Defensively, the way I came out of this
- 4:18Speaker 2: game is I know that the big prevailing narrative, and
- 4:22Speaker 2: I'm not saying I disagree, We're going to get to it.
- 4:25Speaker 2: On the offensive side of the ball is the lack
- 4:28Speaker 2: of a downfield passing game or really any sort of
- 4:32Speaker 2: wide receiver production. Certainly in the passing game. It's a concern.
- 4:36Speaker 2: It's an issue that needs to be either addressed or
- 4:39Speaker 2: this team is likely for another top ten draft pick.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Let's just face it, like, if they can't find ways
- 4:45Speaker 2: to throw the ball down the field, they are in trouble.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Now.
- 4:48Speaker 2: With that being said, I came out of watching the
- 4:50Speaker 2: film from this game yesterday and dissecting this game on
- 4:53Speaker 2: Sunday feeling a little bit more concerned about the defense
- 4:58Speaker 2: when the offense, simply because my expectations on the defensive
- 5:03Speaker 2: side of the ball were much higher and this team's
- 5:06Speaker 2: success or failure rides a lot more on the defense
- 5:11Speaker 2: doing its thing than the offense. The offense, for all
- 5:14Speaker 2: intents and purposes, kind of played their game in this game.
- 5:17Speaker 2: And I know saying that with one hundred and fifty
- 5:19Speaker 2: passing yards is crazy, but.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I'm surprised you're saying this. This is usually the kind
- 5:22Speaker 1: of thing that you hate.
- 5:23Speaker 2: It is, but I have to adjust. I have to
- 5:27Speaker 2: be malleable. I have to adjust to the fact that
- 5:29Speaker 2: this is how they're going to try to win football
- 5:31Speaker 2: games right now until probably next offseason of the season
- 5:36Speaker 2: after that, when they start to get some weapons in
- 5:38Speaker 2: here and some tackle help and Drake may starts playing
- 5:41Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff. They hit a lot
- 5:44Speaker 2: of the same notes offensively that they hit in Cincinnati.
- 5:49Speaker 2: The defense just gave up twenty three points. And as
- 5:52Speaker 2: much as I want to sit here and say, well,
- 5:54Speaker 2: you should be able to win a game twenty four
- 5:56Speaker 2: to twenty three in the NFL, the bottom line is
- 5:59Speaker 2: is that they need their defense to be what carries
- 6:02Speaker 2: them in these football games along with their running game. Offensively,
- 6:05Speaker 2: the running game did its part. Defensively, you just can't
- 6:09Speaker 2: win a lot of games the way the Patriots are constructed.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Giving up three hundred and thirty passing yards to Gino Smith, like,
- 6:14Speaker 2: that's just not going to really get it done. And
- 6:16Speaker 2: watching the film back, I think two things that really
- 6:19Speaker 2: were concerning to me. One, in the first half, thought
- 6:22Speaker 2: they got really cute, really cute. We talked about this
- 6:25Speaker 2: on the way out actually on Sunday after the game,
- 6:27Speaker 2: and I'd watched it back and felt the same way.
- 6:30Speaker 2: It just seemed like some of the disguising, some of
- 6:34Speaker 2: the rotations, some of the things that they were doing
- 6:36Speaker 2: in the back end that we praised them for in
- 6:38Speaker 2: Week one, they got caught in a lot of those
- 6:42Speaker 2: this week. And the two biggest examples to me are
- 6:47Speaker 2: one obvious the touchdown to Metcalf. So it's second and
- 6:52Speaker 2: five from about the forty six yard line and you
- 6:55Speaker 2: go zero blitz on second and five. Not only do
- 6:58Speaker 2: you go zero blitz, but it's also some sort of
- 7:01Speaker 2: man match coverage that Dugger was explaining after the game,
- 7:05Speaker 2: So it's not even just straight man to man zero
- 7:09Speaker 2: where at least you just hope that nobody gets beat.
- 7:13Speaker 2: It's a mental error that leads to this big play.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And lastly, if you watch the play, Kyle duggers on
- 7:21Speaker 2: the outside because he's got sharbon Ay right sharbon Ay,
- 7:24Speaker 2: it's empty and Sharbonay goes out, so Sharbone goes split out.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Kyle duggers on the outside, a safety on the boundary.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Christian Gonzalez an outside corner is on the inside where
- 7:36Speaker 2: the safety should be right, Like everybody's flip flopped on
- 7:39Speaker 2: the play. And the one thing that I thought about
- 7:42Speaker 2: it was just you have guys and this is both instances.
- 7:45Speaker 2: I'm going to bring up where I felt this way,
- 7:48Speaker 2: you have guys playing in weird spots all to try
- 7:53Speaker 2: to disguise what you're doing, right, Like, that's the main
- 7:56Speaker 2: reason you want Gonzo to travel inside with Metcalf looks
- 8:00Speaker 2: like man to man every single time he does that.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Then sometimes it might be zoned, sometimes it might be man,
- 8:05Speaker 2: And that's how you can try to confuse quarterbacks. Felt
- 8:09Speaker 2: like in this game, Gino Smith was not confused at all.
- 8:11Speaker 2: He was a step ahead. And the last playof'll just
- 8:14Speaker 2: bring up yeah, then you can chime in the twenty
- 8:16Speaker 2: four yard passed Jackson Smith and Jigba on third down
- 8:20Speaker 2: over the middle of the field. They run a simulated
- 8:24Speaker 2: pressure cover to Tampa to defense where Kean White and
- 8:31Speaker 2: Joshua Ouce, your two best pass rushers are twenty yards
- 8:36Speaker 2: down the field in a zone coverage.
- 8:39Speaker 1: And they end up on I think that's what where
- 8:40Speaker 1: they ended up on Metcalf, Right, they end up on
- 8:42Speaker 1: JSN and it was in the field. There was another
- 8:44Speaker 1: one where they ended up on metcalf, Yeah, which is
- 8:46Speaker 1: also you know how I feel about the d go
- 8:48Speaker 1: ahead and.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I'm all for a good a good spin the dial,
- 8:52Speaker 2: like I I look, that's what the type of things
- 8:54Speaker 2: that that US nerds like in the film side, like
- 8:57Speaker 2: that's we love to break those types of plays down
- 8:59Speaker 2: when they were right, Like, oh, look at this insane
- 9:02Speaker 2: simulated pressure creeper pressure that the Patriots ran where they
- 9:06Speaker 2: drop their best pass rusher out and that leads to
- 9:09Speaker 2: a free runner for Jabriel Pepper's on the left hand
- 9:12Speaker 2: side and he just comes in unblocked and clocks a
- 9:14Speaker 2: gena Like if it works, it's awesome. Right when it
- 9:17Speaker 2: doesn't work, it's not. And the just to wrap it
- 9:20Speaker 2: up the point what I've the way that they're playing
- 9:23Speaker 2: defense right now feels to me like it's the no
- 9:26Speaker 2: risk at no biscuit defense. Like we talk about that
- 9:29Speaker 2: on an offense where when you're volatile with deep ball
- 9:32Speaker 2: versus you know, dropping back and getting sacked or whatever
- 9:35Speaker 2: one hundred times like the old Bruce arians Tampa offenses
- 9:39Speaker 2: with Jameis Winston. Uh, this is that. But on the
- 9:42Speaker 2: defensive side of the ball, where this is either gonna
- 9:44Speaker 2: work like it did in Week one, and it's gonna
- 9:47Speaker 2: shut down a team doing this, or you're gonna give
- 9:50Speaker 2: up three hundred and thirty yards to Gino Smith. And
- 9:52Speaker 2: there's like no in between on those two things.
- 9:55Speaker 1: So I would say, first off, and I know nobody
- 9:58Speaker 1: wants to hear this, but you gotta, to an extent
- 10:03Speaker 1: just tip your captain Gino Smith.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, he was good.
- 10:06Speaker 1: He was really good. You know, he gets paid to
- 10:09Speaker 1: not just understanding what the Patriots are doing rotating the coverages,
- 10:13Speaker 1: but he he was under pressure a ton. Yeah, and
- 10:15Speaker 1: he he was great under pressure. He was excellent under pressure,
- 10:19Speaker 1: taking hits, getting throws off through contact, things like that.
- 10:22Speaker 1: He was He was really good in this game. But
- 10:24Speaker 1: I'm with you. I think they got a little too
- 10:26Speaker 1: complex for their own good. There's the miscommunication on the
- 10:29Speaker 1: big touchdown. I don't need Keon White dropping in the coverage.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I get it. They don't. They don't want to be
- 10:34Speaker 1: too predictable that that guy can rush. They did this
- 10:38Speaker 1: with Judon, they did it going back to Trey Flowers
- 10:40Speaker 1: manning up prime le'von bell in like twenty seventeen.
- 10:43Speaker 2: It felt to me, Yeah, I at a certain point
- 10:48Speaker 2: if you're if you're disguising too much, you're hurting yourself.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Just let guys do what they're good at. Let key
- 10:54Speaker 1: On White, let Joshua get after the quarterback, spin the
- 10:56Speaker 1: dial with the guys on the back end. Clearly it
- 10:58Speaker 1: wasn't working, And yeah, I think they just psyched themselves out,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and then it didn't help that Gino. It didn't help
- 11:07Speaker 1: that Gino Smith had a great game. I will say
- 11:09Speaker 1: in terms of JSN, it felt like to me what
- 11:12Speaker 1: their game plan was big picture was to kind of
- 11:14Speaker 1: force the Seahawks to just nicklin dine their way down
- 11:17Speaker 1: the field with JSN and wait for Gino to make
- 11:19Speaker 1: a mistake. And then obviously Geno never made a mistake.
- 11:22Speaker 1: If they execute that game plan, it might work that
- 11:25Speaker 1: that coverage bust. I mean, it's a three point game
- 11:27Speaker 1: in overtime, you give up a free seven points on
- 11:29Speaker 1: the coverage bus. That changes a lot. Yeah, So I
- 11:32Speaker 1: feel like that the plan going in was they were
- 11:35Speaker 1: okay with JSN having a big day. You just can't
- 11:38Speaker 1: have dk Metcalf have one hundred something yards on.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Top of that, right, the coverage bus is obviously a
- 11:43Speaker 2: huge play in the game, and it wasn't the only
- 11:44Speaker 2: time they busted the coverage on DK. By the way,
- 11:47Speaker 2: the pass breakup technically I put it in air quotes
- 11:50Speaker 2: by Jabriel Peppers, that would have been another touchdown fifty
- 11:54Speaker 2: yard bomb the DK if the ball had gotten there
- 11:57Speaker 2: at Dietrich wise had pressure on that play it. So
- 12:01Speaker 2: the biggest thing that I look at with the defense
- 12:03Speaker 2: is that one, I'm still not one hundred percent sure
- 12:06Speaker 2: what they want their coverage identity to be on defense.
- 12:10Speaker 2: If their coverage identity is that, we don't have an identity,
- 12:13Speaker 2: that's a tightrope that you walk every single week. That
- 12:18Speaker 2: no risk and no biscuit thing that I was just
- 12:20Speaker 2: talking about Belichick's defenses, and just it's fair to compare,
- 12:26Speaker 2: I believe on that side of the ball, especially because
- 12:28Speaker 2: it's a lot of the same guys and a lot
- 12:30Speaker 2: of the same coaches. Belichick's defenses. For as game plan
- 12:35Speaker 2: oriented as they were week to week, the actual schemes
- 12:39Speaker 2: that they were running were pretty simple for all all
- 12:44Speaker 2: the things considered for an NFL defense coached by Bill Belichick.
- 12:48Speaker 2: They were a man to man post safety defense. They
- 12:52Speaker 2: had their match zones and things like that, but they
- 12:54Speaker 2: were not overly complex in terms of what they're doing.
- 12:58Speaker 2: And we talked about this in last week with Andrew
- 13:00Speaker 2: Callahan's report that they put in some Baltimore Ravens things
- 13:04Speaker 2: into this defense. That's not a Belichick defense, like Bill
- 13:08Speaker 2: was a very structured defensive coach, and by simplifying assignments
- 13:15Speaker 2: and making things easy on guys in that respect, you
- 13:18Speaker 2: just didn't see them let dk Metcalf run through the
- 13:22Speaker 2: defense on a bust like that too often in the past,
- 13:26Speaker 2: Like that wasn't a ton. You can see that a
- 13:28Speaker 2: ton with this group, So that was disappointing. They cannot
- 13:32Speaker 2: play pass defense like that and win a lot of games.
- 13:35Speaker 2: It's really that simple. That was the big picture on
- 13:39Speaker 2: the defense. On the offense, I'm gonna come to Jacoby
- 13:43Speaker 2: Rissett's defense a little bit.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I okay, you're surprising me so far.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I'm good. I'm glad just a little bit. The main
- 13:50Speaker 2: reason I talked about expectations. The expectations were that the
- 13:54Speaker 2: defense was going to carry this team, defense, run game,
- 13:58Speaker 2: play clean, and all three pH win like he did
- 14:01Speaker 2: in Cincinnati. Right, that's the formula. Yeah, that's the plan.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Jacoby Brissett through two games is mister net neutral, Like
- 14:10Speaker 2: he's doing exactly what they wanted him to do. If
- 14:13Speaker 2: you were expecting Jacoby Brissett to come in here and
- 14:16Speaker 2: win a game in the fourth quarter or overtime by
- 14:19Speaker 2: leading some Brady esque game winning drive, He's not that guy. Like,
- 14:25Speaker 2: that's not who he is. He's a veteran bridge backup quarterback,
- 14:30Speaker 2: Like he wasn't going to just put a team on
- 14:32Speaker 2: his back and carry them to a victory. He right now,
- 14:37Speaker 2: Berset is eleventh in QBR through two weeks. He's fifteenth
- 14:43Speaker 2: in EPA per drop back fifteenth and success rate drop back.
- 14:47Speaker 2: He has been pressured twenty seven times. He has the
- 14:50Speaker 2: second highest pressure rate in the NFL with twenty seven
- 14:54Speaker 2: total pressures. He's only been sacked four times. That pressure
- 14:57Speaker 2: to sack rate ranks eighth in the league. So he's
- 15:00Speaker 2: managing pressure extremely well. He's not turning the ball over
- 15:04Speaker 2: and he's doing a nice job in this offense of
- 15:09Speaker 2: keeping them from being catastrophically bad in terms of turnovers
- 15:13Speaker 2: and just negative plays and things like that. He has
- 15:17Speaker 2: zero big time throws and he is not an aggressive passer,
- 15:22Speaker 2: like we know that he's not going to take a
- 15:24Speaker 2: chance with the ball and try to fit something into
- 15:27Speaker 2: a tight window and risk it being a turnover. He's
- 15:30Speaker 2: just not going to play that type of football. With
- 15:33Speaker 2: all that being said, I really feel as though Jacobi
- 15:37Speaker 2: has done his job through two weeks. Now. Is it glamorous,
- 15:42Speaker 2: is it exciting? Is it any of those things?
- 15:45Speaker 4: No?
- 15:46Speaker 2: But I don't feel as though he's really at fault
- 15:50Speaker 2: for the fact that they lost this game on Sunday
- 15:52Speaker 2: because of my expectations again of the guy that he
- 15:56Speaker 2: is not.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I mean, he holds some of the blame, certainly, but
- 16:02Speaker 1: you're not. You know, there's a couple of people we
- 16:04Speaker 1: need to get to, or a couple units we need
- 16:07Speaker 1: to get to before we get to Jagoegberssett. If if
- 16:08Speaker 1: Jakoby Brisset was their worst player on the field Sunday,
- 16:12Speaker 1: playing the way he played, they win that game. They
- 16:15Speaker 1: probably win that game comfortably. The offensive line is just
- 16:20Speaker 1: a it's a problem. And I don't know if you
- 16:21Speaker 1: want to get into this right now. I don't have
- 16:24Speaker 1: a ton of thoughts under kobber Set other than I've
- 16:26Speaker 1: had some people ask why he's being so tentative, why
- 16:29Speaker 1: he's being so cautious, and some people wonder if that's
- 16:31Speaker 1: like a trust thing with the receivers. One, I'd say
- 16:34Speaker 1: the offensive line isn't giving him that much time to
- 16:36Speaker 1: be aggressive. In two. This is kind of just who
- 16:39Speaker 1: he's always been.
- 16:39Speaker 2: I don't think there's a a It's not like he
- 16:42Speaker 2: was going out there slinging the ball all over the
- 16:43Speaker 2: yard before.
- 16:44Speaker 1: This is just kind of who he is.
- 16:46Speaker 2: On the offensive line, though, there's you know, oh, how
- 16:49Speaker 2: do they get a more explosive passing game?
- 16:51Speaker 1: Why don't they do more down the field? You need
- 16:54Speaker 1: time for the receiver to get forty yards down the
- 16:57Speaker 1: field to throw a forty yard pass, and they just
- 17:00Speaker 1: don't have that time right now. Think about it. It's
- 17:02Speaker 1: a even if he need to get thirty yards down
- 17:04Speaker 1: the field, you're talking about three something seconds. That time
- 17:06Speaker 1: doesn't exist right now in the pocket. It really doesn't
- 17:09Speaker 1: persents the second most pressure quarterback in the NFL through
- 17:11Speaker 1: two weeks. I guess we can start here. There's a
- 17:14Speaker 1: number of plays we can start. I guess we can
- 17:16Speaker 1: start here. When do we start having the conversation about
- 17:19Speaker 1: moving on one new back to guard. I don't think
- 17:22Speaker 1: we can have it right now because the right tackle
- 17:24Speaker 1: is Kayden Wallace who they need at left tackle because
- 17:28Speaker 1: Vederian Low is hurt and Chooks acor four left So
- 17:32Speaker 1: we can't have that converse. Yeah, I'm not gonna take
- 17:34Speaker 1: the victory lap on that one, but we can't have that.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Like as I ask you, when do we have this conversation?
- 17:42Speaker 1: I will also acknowledge we probably can't have it for
- 17:45Speaker 1: a week or two because the guy that would play
- 17:47Speaker 1: right tackle has to play left tackle unless there's something
- 17:50Speaker 1: going on with Demantre Jacobs or who's going to practice
- 17:53Speaker 1: by Caleb Jones that maybe we're unaware of. Say it
- 17:58Speaker 1: takes two weeks to get Vederian Low healthy right, say
- 18:01Speaker 1: he misses Thursday night, and then you still just want
- 18:03Speaker 1: to make sure you have that extra depth available in
- 18:06Speaker 1: ten days in San Francisco, especial against a very good
- 18:08Speaker 1: pass rushing team. Week five, do we start talking about
- 18:12Speaker 1: Mike and Wnhu maybe moving back inside to guard.
- 18:15Speaker 2: He's miscast at tackle And I've been saying this forever. Yeah,
- 18:18Speaker 2: you take the victory. You've been on this more than anybody.
- 18:21Speaker 2: I don't need to take a victory lap on it.
- 18:23Speaker 2: But the biggest thing we do on the show, I know,
- 18:25Speaker 2: But the biggest thing to me, uh with on when
- 18:27Speaker 2: Wu is just we need to separate the fact that
- 18:33Speaker 2: he is their best option at tackle ye to him
- 18:36Speaker 2: being actually best off at tackle. Like you understand what
- 18:43Speaker 2: I'm getting at. Like so, like the bar is so
- 18:45Speaker 2: on the floor with their tackle play over the last
- 18:47Speaker 2: couple of years. That yes, mike on Wnu a guard
- 18:50Speaker 2: playing tackle is better than some of the backups that
- 18:53Speaker 2: they have on the roster playing tackle. But at the
- 18:57Speaker 2: same time, that doesn't make it the best course of
- 18:59Speaker 2: action for the line or for on when Wu for
- 19:02Speaker 2: him to be playing tackle.
- 19:03Speaker 1: So my old take was, I acknowledge one win, who's
- 19:07Speaker 1: a better guard than tackle, But I said the difference
- 19:09Speaker 1: is minimal enough that I'd rather have. I I'd rather
- 19:12Speaker 1: be secured at the more high impact position. Yeah, I
- 19:15Speaker 1: don't think on When who's playing that level at tackle
- 19:18Speaker 1: right now or it makes it worth it?
- 19:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, And I want to get to Onenu
- 19:22Speaker 2: and the technique and some of the things that I
- 19:24Speaker 2: saw on film with him in a second. But I
- 19:25Speaker 2: want to just talk big picture again about the passing
- 19:28Speaker 2: game in general. I don't when the quarterback is only
- 19:32Speaker 2: throwing for two hundred and seventy yards through two games.
- 19:34Speaker 2: I don't want to excuse Jacoby and be like it's
- 19:37Speaker 2: not his fault completely and all that kind he's the
- 19:39Speaker 2: one throwing the ball.
- 19:40Speaker 1: He's the one throwing the ball. But I don't if
- 19:43Speaker 1: we're going to rank the issues with the pass game,
- 19:45Speaker 1: i'd say the offensive line is number one. I would
- 19:47Speaker 1: say Alex van Pelt is number two. Yeah, maybe Jacoby's third.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I don't know if he's the there's a big gap
- 19:56Speaker 1: between two and three.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so let's I want to put him into buckets.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Let's do that. Okay, ranking them was probably the smartest
- 20:03Speaker 2: thing you like to do your ranking, that's true, and
- 20:06Speaker 2: ranking them just for for the bit was probably the
- 20:09Speaker 2: best option. But yeah, let's put them into buckets and
- 20:11Speaker 2: kind of rank them at the same time. So offensive line, yeah,
- 20:15Speaker 2: to me, is number one. So right now they're giving
- 20:18Speaker 2: the they're allowing the second highest pressure rate. Everybody's heard
- 20:21Speaker 2: that stat by now. They're also dead last and pass
- 20:24Speaker 2: block win rate they're thirty second in the league and
- 20:26Speaker 2: pass bock win rate through two weeks. They dropped back
- 20:29Speaker 2: to pass five times in the fourth quarter in overtime
- 20:32Speaker 2: on Sunday, he was pressured on every single one all
- 20:35Speaker 2: five drop backs the Seahawks generated pressure.
- 20:38Speaker 1: On they also had and by the way, his total
- 20:40Speaker 1: pressure rate just for the context, forty four point three
- 20:42Speaker 1: percent according to next Gen.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Stat Yeah, in Cleveland's number one Watson at forty four
- 20:48Speaker 2: point seven Is that pff.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Yes, I'm using next Gen Stats. They have a different
- 20:52Speaker 1: They have Watson fifth.
- 20:54Speaker 2: They have Tennessee number one.
- 20:55Speaker 1: They have will Levis first to fifty three point four.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Oh jeez.
- 20:58Speaker 1: But I'll say this too, at least as it relates.
- 21:01Speaker 1: I actually didn't go back and look up the numbers
- 21:02Speaker 1: from week one. I probably should have. As it relates
- 21:05Speaker 1: to week two, more than half their pressures came on
- 21:08Speaker 1: third down, and they were pressured on more than half.
- 21:11Speaker 1: They had fifteen third downs through the ball on eleven
- 21:14Speaker 1: of those fifteen, they were pressured on seven of the eleven,
- 21:18Speaker 1: with a total of nine pressures. Because there were some
- 21:21Speaker 1: plays where there was multiple guys losing, so third down specifically,
- 21:25Speaker 1: they're not getting it done.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's the number one problem with the team.
- 21:29Speaker 2: We knew it coming into the season. This in past protection.
- 21:32Speaker 2: This is I wouldn't say it's worse than I expected.
- 21:34Speaker 2: But it's as bad as I expected.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Oh wait, when you said Cleveland was second, were you
- 21:38Speaker 1: going off total number pressures? No, Cleveland was first in
- 21:40Speaker 1: terms of rate when I just checked, okay, because they
- 21:43Speaker 1: have Cleveland second for total number of pressures but fifth
- 21:47Speaker 1: for pressure rate. It's Levis Persett, Caleb.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Williams, Justin Fields, DeShawn Watson in the top five, right,
- 21:53Speaker 2: and a lot of those quarterbacks and Jacoby, I guess
- 21:55Speaker 2: is we'll get to this in a second, is maybe
- 21:57Speaker 2: in this category. But like guys like Fields, like those
- 22:00Speaker 2: guys are known to hold the football forever. Like That's
- 22:03Speaker 2: a big knock on their games, is how long they
- 22:05Speaker 2: hold the ball. Offensive line, we just rattled off with
- 22:08Speaker 2: the numbers. The numbers are not pretty. They're not doing
- 22:11Speaker 2: a good enough job. The biggest thing that I see too,
- 22:13Speaker 2: and I keep saying that's not going to rephrase, the
- 22:16Speaker 2: most egregious mistake that I see right now at the
- 22:20Speaker 2: offensive line is that they are dialing up some shot
- 22:25Speaker 2: plays in certain situations that they just can't even get
- 22:29Speaker 2: it blocked long enough for the play to have a
- 22:31Speaker 2: chance to work. And they've actually generated especially in this
- 22:36Speaker 2: game against Seattle, they had a few chances that receivers
- 22:40Speaker 2: were uncovering down the field for them to take a shot,
- 22:44Speaker 2: but it wasn't there because of the pass protection. The
- 22:47Speaker 2: other thing I would just mention is that there's so
- 22:50Speaker 2: many dropbacks where Brisset's on his initial read. He looks
- 22:55Speaker 2: to come off the initial read as soon as he
- 22:57Speaker 2: comes from one to two, he's already under pressure, so
- 23:00Speaker 2: two doesn't even become an option, not to even calculate, Well,
- 23:05Speaker 2: what happens if he would get all the way to
- 23:06Speaker 2: three and three is wide open and now we can't
- 23:09Speaker 2: get the ball out. So so much of that is
- 23:11Speaker 2: happening where his progressions. And I've been nippicky about his
- 23:15Speaker 2: progression speed, and I do think that he can speed
- 23:17Speaker 2: up his internal clock a little bit to help, but
- 23:20Speaker 2: in general, like you see so many times where all
- 23:23Speaker 2: right in his drop he's looking left, he gets to
- 23:25Speaker 2: the top of his job, left isn't there. He comes
- 23:28Speaker 2: back to the middle of the field, boom, and it's
- 23:30Speaker 2: like almost.
- 23:31Speaker 1: How many times too? And I'll say this, I honestly
- 23:33Speaker 1: think it could look worse because he's wiggled his way
- 23:37Speaker 1: out of a number of stacks.
- 23:38Speaker 2: He's been pressures, been twenty seven times, only been sacked four.
- 23:41Speaker 1: He's been really good in the pocket, yeah, really good.
- 23:44Speaker 1: But part of what comes with that is you start
- 23:46Speaker 1: running all right, well, now half the field's out of play.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and are.
- 23:50Speaker 1: There times where maybe not even just getting through the
- 23:52Speaker 1: progressions but well, I guess it is getting through the progressions.
- 23:55Speaker 1: But like guys open on the left side, but he
- 23:58Speaker 1: has to roll right out of pressure and now it's
- 24:00Speaker 1: just an unrealistic throw for him to make.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's not he doesn't have Drake May, Patrick Mahomes,
- 24:07Speaker 2: Josh Allen arm talent where he's just gonna off platform
- 24:10Speaker 2: and throw forty yards down the field. So that's a
- 24:12Speaker 2: big part of it too. But he had a really
- 24:14Speaker 2: nice play, two really nice plays early in this game.
- 24:18Speaker 2: I watched the first quarter of the film of this game.
- 24:20Speaker 2: I was like, he's kind of low key dealing for
- 24:22Speaker 2: a little bit there was playing well yeah, yeah, I
- 24:25Speaker 2: think you know the big part of this, and we
- 24:26Speaker 2: can get to this with your AVP PO. When the
- 24:29Speaker 2: scripted plays, yeah, going okay, once they kind of get
- 24:32Speaker 2: out of that script the first twenty to twenty five plays,
- 24:35Speaker 2: it's sustaining it for four quarters. That becomes a real concern.
- 24:39Speaker 2: The other thing I would just mention with the line
- 24:42Speaker 2: I want to talk a little bit about on WHENU
- 24:44Speaker 2: The biggest thing that I see with on when wu
- 24:47Speaker 2: out at tackle is that he plays with a really,
- 24:50Speaker 2: really short corner. And what that means is is that
- 24:54Speaker 2: on his third step in his past set, he doesn't
- 24:57Speaker 2: get enough depth in his past set to cut off
- 25:00Speaker 2: the angle to the quarterback. So instead of making the
- 25:03Speaker 2: rusher go the long way home, the rusher has got
- 25:06Speaker 2: a straight or a more straight path to the QB.
- 25:09Speaker 2: And we've talked about this a little bit with Wallace
- 25:12Speaker 2: on his college tape in this game against Seattle on
- 25:17Speaker 2: when he was opening early with his hips, so he'd
- 25:20Speaker 2: kick out with his first two steps. Then his third
- 25:22Speaker 2: step is swinging the gate open like he goes straight
- 25:26Speaker 2: back and you see his body go from like this
- 25:29Speaker 2: to like this. Right, he just swings the gate open.
- 25:32Speaker 2: And when you swing the gate open like that, now
- 25:34Speaker 2: you have a soft corner. He just goes right through
- 25:35Speaker 2: your outside shoulder and he's in the backfield. That is
- 25:38Speaker 2: usually something that tackles do when they feel threatened to
- 25:43Speaker 2: buy speed and like they don't feel like they can
- 25:46Speaker 2: get out fast enough out of their stance to get
- 25:48Speaker 2: out to a guy to cut off the corner. That
- 25:51Speaker 2: that speaks to the fact that he just doesn't have
- 25:54Speaker 2: the tackle footwork to be out in that much space
- 25:58Speaker 2: on an island. That's why I've always felt like he's
- 26:01Speaker 2: a better guard. This is not This is not the
- 26:06Speaker 2: worst game I've ever seen him play at tackle. He
- 26:08Speaker 2: was worse against Khalil Mack last year against the Chargers,
- 26:12Speaker 2: and he might have been worse against TJ.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Watt.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Now those are two really, really good players, don't get
- 26:16Speaker 2: me wrong, but this is about par for the course
- 26:19Speaker 2: for on Wenu when he plays tackle and he doesn't
- 26:22Speaker 2: have one of his better games like this is what
- 26:24Speaker 2: it looks like in pass protection for him when he
- 26:28Speaker 2: plays like this. So I'm not surprised at all by
- 26:31Speaker 2: this performance by on Wnu. And it seemed like it
- 26:34Speaker 2: got worse when the game went on, which might speak
- 26:38Speaker 2: to conditioning and getting late there in the fourth quarter
- 26:40Speaker 2: in overtime. For a big guy at three hundred and
- 26:43Speaker 2: forty three hundred and forty five pounds to be out
- 26:46Speaker 2: there dancing with pass rushers for four and a half quarters,
- 26:49Speaker 2: that that that can take a toll on a guy
- 26:51Speaker 2: like that. I felt like a lot of the pressures
- 26:52Speaker 2: happened late for him as well.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I would agree with all that.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Okay, I'm curious because I was gonna go in a
- 27:00Speaker 2: different direction with my second bucket. Yeah, I'm curious about
- 27:03Speaker 2: your AVP buckets, So give me that.
- 27:05Speaker 1: So, I mean, it's a couple of things. One is
- 27:09Speaker 1: the some of the decision making in terms of the
- 27:13Speaker 1: individual play calling the end of the first half. It
- 27:16Speaker 1: didn't make sense to me. Yeah, it didn't make sense.
- 27:19Speaker 1: And I don't know how much that's on him, how
- 27:20Speaker 1: much that's on Mayo yep. But you basically have two
- 27:24Speaker 1: options there, right. You either push the ball down the field,
- 27:26Speaker 1: and you understand, all right, if we if this doesn't work, SEEHL,
- 27:29Speaker 1: it's gonna get the ball back with time and so
- 27:31Speaker 1: be it. But we want to be aggressing at points
- 27:33Speaker 1: on the board. The other option is we're just gonna
- 27:36Speaker 1: run the ball. Either take this thing to the half,
- 27:39Speaker 1: or if Seattle starts calling it time, it's timeouts. They
- 27:42Speaker 1: get the ball back with either thirty seconds left or
- 27:46Speaker 1: with no timeouts and probably about a minute left. Right,
- 27:48Speaker 1: So what they did instead was run on first down,
- 27:54Speaker 1: then take like twenty seconds off the clock. Everyone for
- 27:57Speaker 1: mital gain, take like twenty seconds off the clock, then
- 27:59Speaker 1: start throwing. So instead, Seattle now gets the ball back
- 28:03Speaker 1: with all three timeouts and with time not to mention
- 28:08Speaker 1: the twenty five yard punt return. Special teams kind of
- 28:10Speaker 1: low it. They're like, you need to be more decisive,
- 28:12Speaker 1: you need to be more decisive in that moment. I
- 28:15Speaker 1: didn't like the third and six play call on the sack.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Traditional drop back there when you haven't been able to
- 28:20Speaker 1: block all game. I not against throwing the ball overall.
- 28:24Speaker 1: It is third and six, but I just keep waiting
- 28:29Speaker 1: for the jet pass or the end around or something
- 28:32Speaker 1: for Pop Douglas to get him going. They ran a
- 28:34Speaker 1: reverse to Jalen Pulp which went for no yard. It's like,
- 28:37Speaker 1: where's Pop Douglas on that play?
- 28:38Speaker 3: Right?
- 28:40Speaker 1: I didn't like the call in overtime on the third down.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I was okay with them punting it, especially because you
- 28:46Speaker 1: know Ivan, I always say this, I don't care about
- 28:49Speaker 1: the math.
- 28:49Speaker 2: On fourth down. The decision to go for it is.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Only as good as your play call going for it
- 28:57Speaker 1: just because you think it's the moment to go for it.
- 28:58Speaker 1: If you don't believe in your play, doesn't make sense.
- 29:01Speaker 1: They come out with something really unique on third and one,
- 29:04Speaker 1: they try to go off balance line, can't line it upright,
- 29:07Speaker 1: try to go on balanced line, can't get one yard
- 29:10Speaker 1: on a day they were running the ball, well, I
- 29:12Speaker 1: can't imagine they felt good in that situation, which I'd understand.
- 29:14Speaker 1: But also, do we have something better on third and
- 29:17Speaker 1: one than an unbalanced line on a day we're running
- 29:19Speaker 1: for five and a half yards of carry and Ramandra
- 29:21Speaker 1: Stevenson's feeling it? So some stuff like that, and then you,
- 29:25Speaker 1: I actually want to ask you this because you would
- 29:27Speaker 1: understand this better than me. And you talked about the
- 29:30Speaker 1: progressions before. Yeah, who in this offense? Who sets the
- 29:37Speaker 1: order of the progressions? And how are they set? Is
- 29:39Speaker 1: it predetermined? Is it predetermined by Brissette? Is it predetermined
- 29:43Speaker 1: by Van Pelt? Does do reads maybe pre snap impact
- 29:49Speaker 1: the way that's done? Because I feel like Pop Douglas
- 29:52Speaker 1: is late in the progressions a lot right now and
- 29:54Speaker 1: they don't have time to get through the progressions. Is
- 29:57Speaker 1: there a way to maybe change those progressions to move
- 30:00Speaker 1: things up for Pop Douglas? And if not, again, where's
- 30:03Speaker 1: the end a round. Where's the Jets sweep? Where's the screen?
- 30:06Speaker 1: This offense, they're not gonna be able to throw the
- 30:08Speaker 1: ball down the field a lot. They're just not They're
- 30:10Speaker 1: not gonna have the time with this offensive line. So
- 30:12Speaker 1: what's the next best thing to create explosive plays? A
- 30:15Speaker 1: guy that can catch a five yard pass and turn
- 30:17Speaker 1: it into a twenty five yard game. That's Pop Douglas.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I'm not saying forcing the ball, because when you start
- 30:21Speaker 1: forcing the ball to one player, the defense is pick
- 30:24Speaker 1: up on it. You create turnovers. But yeah, there are
- 30:27Speaker 1: things you can do within the scheme to maybe emphasize
- 30:29Speaker 1: the player's role in the offense. And they're gonna need
- 30:32Speaker 1: to start doing that for Pop Douglas, and if the
- 30:34Speaker 1: progressions are maybe a way to do that. But again,
- 30:36Speaker 1: it's kind of more your area of expertise than mine.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's there's I agree with you that he
- 30:41Speaker 2: hasn't been the initial reading the progression. He actually was
- 30:45Speaker 2: on the initial side of the progression on the third down,
- 30:47Speaker 2: Zack Late.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Are you sure?
- 30:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, Prisent never looked over there. Yeah, no, he's
- 30:51Speaker 2: he's running the out. There's like it's like an out
- 30:54Speaker 2: and then like a deeper out with kJ Osbourne. He
- 30:57Speaker 2: was holding the ball for Osborne. I think Douglas is
- 31:00Speaker 2: open if you you know, a Brady like throw, like
- 31:04Speaker 2: a pinpoint throw to the sideline, He's open. But you
- 31:07Speaker 2: do see the corner there, and you know, if you're presett,
- 31:11Speaker 2: you're probably thinking, if this isn't a perfect throw, it's
- 31:14Speaker 2: gonna be a pick six in the other direction, I'm
- 31:16Speaker 2: gonna lose us the game, right, So instead I'm just gonna,
- 31:19Speaker 2: you know, pass that up and try to keep us
- 31:21Speaker 2: on with a field goal. Here. The biggest thing that
- 31:24Speaker 2: I see with the progressions or the answer your question, Yeah,
- 31:28Speaker 2: there's progression reads and there's coverage reads. So progression reads
- 31:32Speaker 2: is literally just one, two three, right. Those are usually
- 31:35Speaker 2: predetermined based off the play call. Then there's coverage reads.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Coverage reads are they're in split safety, so where I'm
- 31:42Speaker 2: gonna look left, If they're in single high, I'm looking
- 31:45Speaker 2: right because my beaters are on those sides of the field.
- 31:47Speaker 2: They do a little bit of both in this offense,
- 31:49Speaker 2: as every NFL offense does. But that's like the simplest
- 31:53Speaker 2: way of putting that in terms of how the progression start,
- 31:56Speaker 2: Like where the quarterback's eyes are starting and things like that.
- 31:59Speaker 2: I'm sure there's pre snap indicators that that go even
- 32:02Speaker 2: beyond like what I could tell you without knowing exactly
- 32:05Speaker 2: what they're telling you.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Well, I guess the point is, is there a way
- 32:08Speaker 1: to move Pop Douglas up in the progression?
- 32:11Speaker 2: Certainly, but I have some theories on Pop that I
- 32:13Speaker 2: want to get to. But yes, in it's as easy
- 32:17Speaker 2: as just saying like this is we're running dagger, We're
- 32:20Speaker 2: now running this.
- 32:21Speaker 1: I didn't Again, I I kind of felt that, but
- 32:23Speaker 1: I didn't know. It almost felt too too easy to
- 32:25Speaker 1: be true. I'll say one other thing on on Van Pelt,
- 32:28Speaker 1: just kind of as an overarching take before we get
- 32:30Speaker 1: to that, because you ask my My big take is
- 32:33Speaker 1: you're you're seeing a lot of the stuff that you
- 32:35Speaker 1: see with these other I know it's gonna drive you
- 32:39Speaker 1: up a wall. With the other Shanahan coordinators, that just
- 32:43Speaker 1: kind of caps the offense and the reality with Van
- 32:47Speaker 1: Pelt is the designs aren't there. Because as much as
- 32:51Speaker 1: I not Kyle Shanahan, Matt Lafleur, right, these guys, Mike MCDA,
- 32:54Speaker 1: Mike mcdaniels's own issue, but like they do design. They do.
- 32:58Speaker 1: They are great at designing place I've alway I said
- 33:00Speaker 1: that there were lead play designers, to which I would say,
- 33:02Speaker 1: then go be an offensive coordinator because you can't do
- 33:04Speaker 1: the rest of it.
- 33:05Speaker 2: But just had to get that in there.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Yes, I don't want to sound like I'm going back
- 33:09Speaker 1: on my take, but you are seeing some of the
- 33:12Speaker 1: refusal to adapt some of the clock management, the game
- 33:15Speaker 1: management issues, things like that, but you don't have some
- 33:18Speaker 1: of the bells and whistles that come with it. And
- 33:22Speaker 1: I think Van Pelt did a great job this summer
- 33:24Speaker 1: in terms of working with Drake May and Joe Milton
- 33:27Speaker 1: on their development mechanically, and we'll kind of see where
- 33:31Speaker 1: May's at, I'm sure at some point sooner rather than later,
- 33:35Speaker 1: and kind of see how that progression has gone. But
- 33:37Speaker 1: I said this before the season, everybody was criticizing Alex
- 33:40Speaker 1: van Pelt, and I said, well, all we have to
- 33:43Speaker 1: go on right now. We can't really go off of
- 33:44Speaker 1: play calling because the preseason it's not the real book.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Let's wait and get into the season and see what
- 33:49Speaker 1: it looks like. I haven't been I haven't been blown
- 33:53Speaker 1: away by him as a play caller. I think it
- 33:54Speaker 1: leaves a lot to be the offense leaves a lot
- 33:56Speaker 1: to be desired so far.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Okay, that's fair. I would agree with the sequencing of
- 34:03Speaker 2: plays maybe, Yeah, And Jacob said.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Sequencing is another good thing, Like it feels like they're
- 34:07Speaker 1: just calling individual plays. Yeah, and there's not a ton
- 34:10Speaker 1: of all Right, we've hit them with a couple of
- 34:12Speaker 1: wide zone runs in a row. Let's play action off
- 34:15Speaker 1: that and try to get some behind it. I don't
- 34:16Speaker 1: know if it's the offensive line that's making be tentative.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Or what, but yeah, yeah, I hear you on on
- 34:22Speaker 2: some of those things. I think the overall design of
- 34:24Speaker 2: the run game is really good and they've gotten better,
- 34:27Speaker 2: Like in terms of you know, last week or against Cincinnati,
- 34:31Speaker 2: I should say, yeah, I felt like they were really
- 34:33Speaker 2: just that was like a high school offense, Like they
- 34:36Speaker 2: were running duo right at Cincinnati. It wasn't anything really
- 34:39Speaker 2: elaborate or anything. They added some wrinkles into the run
- 34:42Speaker 2: game this week, a little bit more motion. They were
- 34:45Speaker 2: using like the wide receivers as like wing blockers on
- 34:48Speaker 2: duo and kind of inserting those guys up to the
- 34:51Speaker 2: second level so that they could kick out the ends
- 34:53Speaker 2: and get up to the corners. Still. I really liked
- 34:56Speaker 2: like they were doing some little things like that that
- 34:58Speaker 2: to get this run game a little bit more difficult
- 35:02Speaker 2: to defend, and I enjoyed that. I thought the outside
- 35:05Speaker 2: zone game was probably the best I've seen the Patriots
- 35:07Speaker 2: block outside zone in three years of trying to install
- 35:10Speaker 2: an outside zone run scheme that Patricia here certainly did
- 35:15Speaker 2: never got to this. Like they they hit some real
- 35:17Speaker 2: outside zone runs where I was like, that looked like
- 35:20Speaker 2: a forty nine ers play, Like that looked like what
- 35:22Speaker 2: it's supposed to look like. You know, the nineteen yard
- 35:24Speaker 2: ar to Gibson in this game was an outside zone
- 35:27Speaker 2: week off the tackle that will hit exactly how it should.
- 35:31Speaker 2: So that's good, that's nice. The usage of certain personnel.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Did you mentioned the the end around to Jaalen Polk?
- 35:41Speaker 2: To me, it's not even pop Like where's Taekwon on
- 35:44Speaker 2: that play? Like that's a Xavier Worthy end around right,
- 35:47Speaker 2: Like that's like all you're looking for on a play
- 35:49Speaker 2: like that is a guy that just hit twenty two
- 35:53Speaker 2: miles an hour coming through the defense like Xavier Worthy
- 35:55Speaker 2: did on that opening.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Game, and they had it it it It worked in
- 35:58Speaker 1: terms of like up to get him the ball, like
- 36:00Speaker 1: the edge was there, The edge was there to be had.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I if that's a faster player, not to pick
- 36:05Speaker 2: on Jalen Polk, but if that's a Taekwon Thornton. Uh,
- 36:09Speaker 2: I was gonna say, Jalen Rager, a Jalen Rager, a
- 36:12Speaker 2: Pop Douglas like someone like that, then that has a chance.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Well that's kind of what I'm saying. And that's not
- 36:19Speaker 1: I mean, that's not Polk's game. That's not why he's here. Yeah,
- 36:21Speaker 1: that's not how that's not what you drafted him to.
- 36:24Speaker 2: It felt like when the Patriots in twenty two started
- 36:26Speaker 2: doing that with Jacobe Myers and it was like, what
- 36:28Speaker 2: do we do it? Like, this is the slowest guy
- 36:30Speaker 2: on the field, I understand what we're doing here. Uh,
- 36:33Speaker 2: the the third down play call in overtime. I actually
- 36:36Speaker 2: didn't hate the design of the play. They were running
- 36:40Speaker 2: a lot of gap or duo just right at the
- 36:43Speaker 2: line against Seattle and against Cincinnati, like to dress it
- 36:48Speaker 2: up a little bit and show a little bit of
- 36:50Speaker 2: a different look like there. My biggest reason why I
- 36:53Speaker 2: really didn't mind it was because Taekwon doesn't really necessarily
- 36:56Speaker 2: have a role at the point of attack in that
- 36:58Speaker 2: play anyways, so all you're only pulling him out of
- 37:01Speaker 2: blocking you know, a.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Car so much that and I actually like that because
- 37:05Speaker 1: if it had worked, they could have built off of
- 37:07Speaker 1: it where you fake that handoff to Stevenson, you toss
- 37:10Speaker 1: it to Taekwan on the pitch and he's gone. But yeah,
- 37:13Speaker 1: one again, get it lined up two And I.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Don't obviously the penalty not right.
- 37:17Speaker 1: I don't know if some of this was was just
- 37:19Speaker 1: Seattle getting a really good initial surge. But you have
- 37:24Speaker 1: Leyden Robinson, Mike go and Winu Kane Wallace all lined
- 37:27Speaker 1: up next to each other on the right side. Those
- 37:28Speaker 1: are three best run blockers. Yeah, right, Why does Stevenson
- 37:33Speaker 1: try to hit the hole at left card when you
- 37:36Speaker 1: have those three on the right side. Now, some of
- 37:38Speaker 1: it I think might be in credit to the Seattle
- 37:41Speaker 1: defensive line. They blew that thing up on the right side.
- 37:44Speaker 1: They got the initial push which you cannot let happen
- 37:47Speaker 1: there again if you have those three guys next to
- 37:49Speaker 1: each other. But I almost feel like they loaded up
- 37:51Speaker 1: on the right to run left as kind of like
- 37:54Speaker 1: a disguise and no, just go strength on strength. That
- 37:58Speaker 1: you have that, you should have the advantage there go
- 38:00Speaker 1: strength on strength.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I hear you on that. I just they probably
- 38:05Speaker 2: were trying to catch Seattle sleeping on Taekwon a little bit. Yeah,
- 38:08Speaker 2: because if the corner on that side of the field,
- 38:11Speaker 2: I think it was requal and, Like if he crashes
- 38:13Speaker 2: down and Jacobe can just pitch that, it's like a touchdown, right,
- 38:17Speaker 2: Like he's literally there's gonna be nobody there to keep
- 38:20Speaker 2: him from an acre of green grass in front of him.
- 38:24Speaker 2: So maybe there was a little bit of element of
- 38:27Speaker 2: let's let's see if they cover it into their credit.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Seattle's credit requal And is twenty seven. I think that's
- 38:33Speaker 2: equal and right. He did cover it right, So it
- 38:36Speaker 2: was taken away there by the defense. But I overall
- 38:41Speaker 2: with van Pelt, the biggest maybe nitpick that I would have,
- 38:46Speaker 2: I hear you, and I allowed you to go on
- 38:48Speaker 2: the situational football thing because it was a part of
- 38:50Speaker 2: this game and that's not my thing. I'm glad you
- 38:54Speaker 2: covered it. The biggest thing with Van Pelt that I
- 38:57Speaker 2: see is that a lot of his shot plays are
- 39:02Speaker 2: these longer developing play action plays, and that's just the offense,
- 39:07Speaker 2: like that's just the way that this offense builds in
- 39:09Speaker 2: these these deeper throws down the field, and it doesn't
- 39:13Speaker 2: really seem like he has another thing in his bag
- 39:18Speaker 2: to get the ball downfield.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Well, I guess getting the ball downfield is different than this.
- 39:23Speaker 1: But like I said before, right, you don't have time
- 39:25Speaker 1: in the pocket for those plays to develop. Are there
- 39:28Speaker 1: other ways you can set up explosives and I go
- 39:30Speaker 1: to just scheme touch plays. Can you get the ball
- 39:32Speaker 1: in the hands of your most explosive playmakers. Didn't he
- 39:35Speaker 1: say something this offseason about wanting to be the best
- 39:37Speaker 1: screen team in the league. Yeah, where is that?
- 39:39Speaker 2: Well, they've tried to run a handful of screens and
- 39:43Speaker 2: the one to Henry's the only one that's worked. And
- 39:45Speaker 2: I when you're a team that's limited down the field,
- 39:48Speaker 2: you know, we've seen this all the time over the
- 39:50Speaker 2: last couple of years. When your run game, quick game screen,
- 39:53Speaker 2: like that's your offense. These defenses just sit on the
- 39:56Speaker 2: screens like they know they're coming. I feel like there
- 39:59Speaker 2: are screens and build off the run, right, you know
- 40:04Speaker 2: that worked perfectly, kind of have the counteraction with the
- 40:07Speaker 2: motion going in one direction.
- 40:09Speaker 1: But like also like a play action bubble screen, Yeah,
- 40:12Speaker 1: something like that, Like you can you can build some
- 40:14Speaker 1: screens off run success rather than pass success.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah, they've tried a handful of them, and they, like
- 40:21Speaker 2: I said, the only successful one they've had so far
- 40:23Speaker 2: is the one to Henry on Sunday. I'm sure they'll
- 40:26Speaker 2: keep trying, but I have to bring it up because
- 40:28Speaker 2: it just makes me almost tear up a little bit
- 40:32Speaker 2: that they ran leak and they couldn't block it and
- 40:37Speaker 2: they had it. Like Henry is wide af open, right,
- 40:41Speaker 2: He's he's literally naked, there's nobody around him. He's gonna
- 40:45Speaker 2: walk in for a touchdown. And they they dressed it
- 40:49Speaker 2: up with emotion by Pop Douglas and they have Leyden
- 40:53Speaker 2: Robinson pulling out to the unblocked edge. Henry kind of
- 40:56Speaker 2: gives him a little bit of a of a chip
- 40:58Speaker 2: to hold him up first second to help Robinson get
- 41:01Speaker 2: over there. He releases into the route and Jacoby is
- 41:04Speaker 2: just like running around like a crazy person because there's
- 41:07Speaker 2: like three guys in his face. He does get the
- 41:10Speaker 2: pass somehow to Henry for an eleven yard completion, but
- 41:14Speaker 2: that should have been a walking touchdown on my favorite
- 41:17Speaker 2: play call in football. But they just didn't have it blocked.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Maybe next time when you go into that, just thinking
- 41:26Speaker 2: out loud, like don't have a puller, Yeah, like just
- 41:29Speaker 2: block it as outside zone, right, They just like kind
- 41:31Speaker 2: of fake it as outside zone and then have the
- 41:33Speaker 2: quarterback roll.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Now, right, happens there so Laighton Robinson doesn't get over
- 41:37Speaker 1: in time on the pole. Yeah, and maybe you saw
- 41:39Speaker 1: it differently than me, mike O. And when who ends
- 41:42Speaker 1: up one on two and kind of looks like he's
- 41:46Speaker 1: not sure what he's supposed to do, it just lets
- 41:47Speaker 1: both guys run by him.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it kind of looked to me like Robinson and
- 41:52Speaker 2: maybe a little bit on when Wu too, But Robinson
- 41:55Speaker 2: in particular looked really tentative on the poll, like he
- 41:58Speaker 2: didn't know where he was going. And he's rookie, it's
- 42:01Speaker 2: his second game in the NFL. I'm not trying to
- 42:02Speaker 2: pick on the guy necessarily, but that's a pretty simple
- 42:07Speaker 2: Like you have that guy like you're pulling to this
- 42:10Speaker 2: guy that we're gonna leave for you to come and hit,
- 42:13Speaker 2: you know, ear hole, Like that's your guy. Like it's
- 42:16Speaker 2: not necessarily like we're scanning for like you know, it's
- 42:19Speaker 2: not a like dual read or something like that. It's
- 42:21Speaker 2: literally just like, this is the scheme, this is your guy.
- 42:24Speaker 2: I thought he was a little bit slow to get
- 42:26Speaker 2: over there. It just did. The blocking upfront just didn't work.
- 42:28Speaker 2: It didn't work. We're on multiple levels, and those are
- 42:31Speaker 2: the issues that they're having. Like you can even have
- 42:34Speaker 2: the perfectly time play call and scheme a guy wide open,
- 42:38Speaker 2: which like doesn't happen very often in the NFL, and
- 42:41Speaker 2: you can get all these things to go right. But
- 42:43Speaker 2: if you just can't block it for more than two
- 42:47Speaker 2: and a half three seconds to let the quarterback get
- 42:49Speaker 2: the ball off, then it can all go for not
- 42:51Speaker 2: And this team right now, as we get into the
- 42:54Speaker 2: third bucket that I have with the receivers, they don't
- 42:57Speaker 2: have the outside receiver talent to just have somebody run
- 43:01Speaker 2: by somebody and create it. Like you have to scheme
- 43:05Speaker 2: it up. And in order to scheme it up, you
- 43:07Speaker 2: need time. And if you don't have time in the
- 43:09Speaker 2: pocket and you don't have the receivers to get open
- 43:11Speaker 2: on their own and you can't scheme it up, this
- 43:14Speaker 2: is how you don't get the ball down the field.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Like these are all the sort of dominoes that go
- 43:18Speaker 2: into play the receivers in Jakobe and sort of their
- 43:23Speaker 2: fault and all this. I look at it more of
- 43:26Speaker 2: like a timing or a trust thing. He doesn't have
- 43:29Speaker 2: a whole lot of trust in anybody. It doesn't seem
- 43:32Speaker 2: to me outside of Hunter Henry right now to throw
- 43:35Speaker 2: the ball and just anticipate that the guy is going
- 43:39Speaker 2: to be in a spot. And he did it a
- 43:40Speaker 2: couple of times with Henry into some zone structures and
- 43:43Speaker 2: it was nice and it was a well, you know,
- 43:45Speaker 2: well executed play a couple of times there in the
- 43:48Speaker 2: first half. But just in general, there's not a whole
- 43:51Speaker 2: lot of trust of like, oh, I'm just gonna put
- 43:54Speaker 2: this ball up on a on a on the high
- 43:56Speaker 2: shelf for Austin Hooper in the red zone and he's
- 43:59Speaker 2: just gonna go ahead and high point the ball and
- 44:01Speaker 2: make a play like that. Just that type of stuff
- 44:03Speaker 2: just doesn't exist in their offense right now. I mentioned
- 44:06Speaker 2: earlier that he's got zero big time throws. Big time
- 44:10Speaker 2: throws come when you try to fit the ball down
- 44:12Speaker 2: the field in some tight coverage, Like you don't just
- 44:15Speaker 2: get a big time throw for throwing a wide open receiver,
- 44:18Speaker 2: you know, a touchdown like, that's not a big time throw,
- 44:21Speaker 2: so you're gonna have to try to throw the ball
- 44:23Speaker 2: into some tighter windows or tighter coverage and man coverage situations,
- 44:27Speaker 2: and he just doesn't do that a whole lot. I
- 44:30Speaker 2: do think that he could be a tick faster through
- 44:32Speaker 2: his reads, and that's probably part of it too. You
- 44:34Speaker 2: watch Jalen Polk's touchdown, really good quarterback play, Like he
- 44:40Speaker 2: starts on the left, he's got sticks like two, a
- 44:42Speaker 2: little outs on the left hand side, gets to the
- 44:44Speaker 2: top of his drop, cancels it out right back into
- 44:47Speaker 2: the middle of the field. Bullet Like. That's how it's
- 44:49Speaker 2: got to look in terms of the timing or the
- 44:51Speaker 2: pacing of the play from the quarterbacks perspective. Sometimes I
- 44:55Speaker 2: do see him hold the ball a little bit, and
- 44:57Speaker 2: he's got the third highest time to attempt right now
- 45:00Speaker 2: in the league. Some of that's because he's running for
- 45:02Speaker 2: his life and he's extending plays. But I don't feel
- 45:05Speaker 2: as though there's enough rhythm throws to this offense right now,
- 45:08Speaker 2: where it's like come off the initial get to the
- 45:11Speaker 2: second or third hit the ball, you know, ball comes
- 45:14Speaker 2: out on the first hitch, second hitch, Like it's all
- 45:17Speaker 2: of it is either quick and out like quick game style,
- 45:21Speaker 2: or it's extended play. I'm running for my life trying
- 45:23Speaker 2: to make something happen. Yeah, there's no in between of
- 45:26Speaker 2: just this is rhythm within our offense, and that's difficult
- 45:30Speaker 2: to make plays in the passing game if you have
- 45:33Speaker 2: no instructure rhythm throws, and next Gen actually tracks those
- 45:38Speaker 2: types of plays quick game, rhythm extended and he just
- 45:41Speaker 2: look at his numbers on rhythm situations and it's not pretty.
- 45:45Speaker 2: So that's the biggest thing that I would say as
- 45:47Speaker 2: the third bucket here. It's never one thing. I know
- 45:51Speaker 2: everybody always wants to say, like, what's the one thing
- 45:53Speaker 2: that we can all point to, But I feel like
- 45:55Speaker 2: we just described the whole puzzle and why it's not
- 45:59Speaker 2: fitting to the quarterback. Could be a little bit more aggressive,
- 46:03Speaker 2: could be a little bit faster through things. The offensive
- 46:05Speaker 2: line is obviously a mess and a train wreck, and
- 46:07Speaker 2: pass protection and there might be some design, you know,
- 46:11Speaker 2: receiver route riding elements that could be improved as well.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Hopefully they can at least improve some of it. You
- 46:18Speaker 2: can't fix everything right, so hopefully there's like a few
- 46:21Speaker 2: things that they can tweak here and there to try
- 46:23Speaker 2: to improve it. I do want to get to three up,
- 46:25Speaker 2: three down or did you have anything else?
- 46:28Speaker 1: Yeah? One more thing on that game of just back
- 46:31Speaker 1: to the offensive line. Yeah, and we talk about moving
- 46:33Speaker 1: mikeel and Winno inside to guard potentially down the road.
- 46:37Speaker 1: So now you have Leighton Robinson City So at left guard.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:41Speaker 1: I throw Michael Jordan into that competition too. Michael Jordan's
- 46:44Speaker 1: quietly been one of their ben finast offensive linemen and whatever.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Like City Show is going to come back, Cole Stranger
- 46:51Speaker 1: is gonna come back eventually, Michael Jordan should continue to
- 46:55Speaker 1: be allowed to compete for the starting guard job because
- 46:58Speaker 1: he's been really good.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Andrews, who wasn't great on Sunday, but I thought he
- 47:03Speaker 2: was fine as well. I would say Michael Jordan might
- 47:06Speaker 2: have beat might be their most consistent guy. Like, you
- 47:08Speaker 2: know exactly what you're getting out of Michael Jordan. He's
- 47:10Speaker 2: not a people mover. He's got a little bit of
- 47:12Speaker 2: a tardy anchor in pass protection, but on the whole,
- 47:16Speaker 2: he is not going to be a liability. Like he's
- 47:19Speaker 2: kind of just a solid, fine veteran guard. I think
- 47:22Speaker 2: he's been more than adequate at left guard.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Just want to throw that in.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so Wallace playing on Thursday night's big for me.
- 47:30Speaker 2: I just if he can. He's probably not a left tackle.
- 47:34Speaker 2: If he is forced into playing left tackle for Darien
- 47:37Speaker 2: Lowe on on Thursday night, we'll have to adjust for that.
- 47:40Speaker 2: But just you can still see if he can block guys.
- 47:42Speaker 2: You know, even if he's playing at a position. If
- 47:45Speaker 2: he looks good or just even passable at tackle against
- 47:50Speaker 2: the Jets, I would probably think about putting him in
- 47:53Speaker 2: the starting lineup permanently at right tackle.
- 47:56Speaker 1: Yeah. The only reason I would, The only reason I'm
- 47:59Speaker 1: not saying do it this week is because again, you
- 48:01Speaker 1: need him at left right once Vanarian Low's back. As
- 48:04Speaker 1: soon as that happens, I think you have the conversation
- 48:07Speaker 1: about it. Even honestly, even if Kinen Wallas doesn't look great,
- 48:10Speaker 1: I still have the conversation because here we go again,
- 48:12Speaker 1: we were taking a career right tackle with very few
- 48:15Speaker 1: reps on the left side in practice and putting him
- 48:18Speaker 1: at left tackle. I'm not expecting it to look good.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I don't think it's indicative of what he'll be on
- 48:22Speaker 1: the right side. Even if he struggles, I'd still consider
- 48:26Speaker 1: putting him at right tackle as soon as you can,
- 48:29Speaker 1: as soon as Vederian.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Lowe is back, Yeah, as long as The biggest thing
- 48:32Speaker 2: to me on just watching him play on Thursday night,
- 48:35Speaker 2: if he does play, which I think we're all kind
- 48:36Speaker 2: of expecting, is just his play strength and his anchor,
- 48:39Speaker 2: like if he doesn't get pushed around in pass protection
- 48:42Speaker 2: and he's able to hold his ground against pass rushers.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Like that's the baseline for every single offensive lineman you, rookie,
- 48:48Speaker 2: young offensive lineman in the league is simply can you
- 48:51Speaker 2: handle the power of NFL pass rushers. If he passes
- 48:55Speaker 2: that test, then the technique stuff for the footwork stuff
- 48:58Speaker 2: of him with him flipping sides, like does you can
- 49:00Speaker 2: kind of excuse some of that And maybe he's cleaner
- 49:03Speaker 2: on the right side than he is on the left side.
- 49:05Speaker 2: So I'm just that's what I would be looking for
- 49:07Speaker 2: if you're watching the game on Thursday night, is just it,
- 49:10Speaker 2: can he hold his ground right against these pass rushers?
- 49:13Speaker 2: And if he can, then you can kind of work with, okay,
- 49:16Speaker 2: his hand placement or his feet or whatever. Moving forward,
- 49:20Speaker 2: Let's get into three up, three down, and then we
- 49:22Speaker 2: can open up the line. Phone lines eight five, to
- 49:24Speaker 2: five Pats. Five hundred is the phone number. Web radio
- 49:28Speaker 2: at patrons dot com is the email address. Let's start
- 49:31Speaker 2: with the ups. We'll start on the up. Well, who's
- 49:33Speaker 2: your number one up from this game?
- 49:34Speaker 1: That's gotta be ke On White. He was so good again. Yeah,
- 49:38Speaker 1: and he's He's doing it from all these different alignments.
- 49:41Speaker 1: He's rushing up the middle, he's rushing off the edge,
- 49:43Speaker 1: he's doing it without help. He's doing it on different downs.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Dynamic pass rusher. You know, I'm high on ke On White.
- 49:50Speaker 1: I didn't even think he was this.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Yeah, this is another level. He's been something through two games. Yeah.
- 49:56Speaker 2: I wasn't particularly I was late to this party. I
- 49:59Speaker 2: will fully it was the only pick in that draft
- 50:01Speaker 2: you didn't like. I didn't. I know this is gonna people, don't.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Some people make fun of me for using this term.
- 50:08Speaker 2: His twitchiness is a lot better on the inside than
- 50:12Speaker 2: it is rushing outside. And when they let him just
- 50:15Speaker 2: kind of rush inside and go with his best move
- 50:17Speaker 2: and get around guys, he is an explosive, twitchy mover.
- 50:21Speaker 2: And that was the thing that I didn't necessarily see
- 50:23Speaker 2: from him before on his college film or like early
- 50:27Speaker 2: Patriots stuff and some of that, I believe is probably
- 50:32Speaker 2: just because he's trying to rush within the structure and
- 50:35Speaker 2: he doesn't want to get out of his gap and
- 50:37Speaker 2: he wants to be you know, structurally sound and keep
- 50:40Speaker 2: the quarterback in the pocket and like all that Belichick
- 50:44Speaker 2: stuff right where it's like so much of it is
- 50:46Speaker 2: like about setting the edge and the trash compactor and
- 50:49Speaker 2: making sure you're not out of your gaps and things
- 50:51Speaker 2: like that. Now the Patriots coaching staff has basically turned
- 50:55Speaker 2: him into Christian Barmore and they're like, we need you
- 50:57Speaker 2: to get after the quarterback, so you just go with
- 50:59Speaker 2: your best and rest of us will worry about keeping
- 51:02Speaker 2: the quarterback in the pocket. Like that. That's sort of
- 51:04Speaker 2: been the approach his his swipe rip move like that,
- 51:09Speaker 2: he just swipes the guy out of the way and
- 51:10Speaker 2: then rips under. It's it is a go to rush
- 51:14Speaker 2: move like that is a go to, you know, top
- 51:18Speaker 2: end rush move like some guys like von Miller has
- 51:20Speaker 2: the ghost rush, you know, Aaron Donald had the arm
- 51:24Speaker 2: over swim like that. Everybody has their go to rush,
- 51:27Speaker 2: and that's his, Like on the inside, you can build
- 51:30Speaker 2: off it, obviously, and I'm sure he will. I think
- 51:32Speaker 2: he tried that he did beat a block with a
- 51:34Speaker 2: spin that that's gonna be very very nice if he
- 51:37Speaker 2: had that. You know, there's there's a lot of really
- 51:40Speaker 2: good elements to his game. I had as him as
- 51:42Speaker 2: my number two up, two sacks, three quarterback pressures, set
- 51:47Speaker 2: the edge on that fourth down stop and just you know,
- 51:50Speaker 2: uh press the tight end right into the backfield and
- 51:53Speaker 2: gave the runner nowhere to go. Like Dugger doesn't run
- 51:55Speaker 2: that down from behind. If Keon White doesn't just dent
- 51:58Speaker 2: the edge of the of the line to let him
- 52:01Speaker 2: make that play, He's been phenomenal. Like the only thing
- 52:04Speaker 2: that I would say is now, I'm just worried that
- 52:07Speaker 2: this is on film and other teams are gonna like
- 52:09Speaker 2: start double teaming.
- 52:10Speaker 1: That will be the question. Well, so that's my thing,
- 52:12Speaker 1: is ke On White had a good game. How would
- 52:15Speaker 1: you say the pass rush was as a whole.
- 52:18Speaker 2: Not good enough? Still? I mean, like Joshua is like
- 52:20Speaker 2: the only other guy that brings any juice in the past.
- 52:22Speaker 1: So this is my thing.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Dietrich, I should I should mention who doesn't play a
- 52:25Speaker 2: time for whatever reason.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Yeah, he's playing less. He's also one of the few
- 52:28Speaker 1: guys I didn't realize he's in a contract year. Yeah,
- 52:31Speaker 1: it's one of the few guys who didn't get an extensions.
- 52:32Speaker 1: So maybe that, you know, the pieces coming together tell
- 52:35Speaker 1: you how they view the new regime views him. But
- 52:41Speaker 1: so this is my thing. Keon is gonna start getting
- 52:43Speaker 1: double teams? Yeah, that's just gonna happen. Who's going to
- 52:48Speaker 1: step up? So other guys are gonna get one on
- 52:49Speaker 1: ones now? Yeah, who's gonna step up and win there?
- 52:51Speaker 1: One on ones? Is it gonna be Josh Uche? I
- 52:54Speaker 1: know Zamenez just got hurt. Uh, I mean who Maybe
- 52:57Speaker 1: they start rushing Tavai a little more, they start bringing
- 53:00Speaker 1: Peppers from the second level, but I might I wonder
- 53:03Speaker 1: how much Pepper's gonna be playing at the second level
- 53:05Speaker 1: now because Duggar's gonna have to play there more because
- 53:07Speaker 1: he's the green dot. Yeah, we can get to the
- 53:09Speaker 1: juwant Bentley injury. I think there's a lot of fallout
- 53:13Speaker 1: right that comes from that. But somebody else is gonna
- 53:16Speaker 1: have to step up now. In long term, you're gonna
- 53:17Speaker 1: have him next to Christian Barmore and that's gonna be
- 53:20Speaker 1: a ton of fun. Yeah, that's gonna be a whole
- 53:22Speaker 1: lot of fun, but still got games to win this year.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Barmore is not gonna be part of it. Somebody else
- 53:27Speaker 1: is gonna have to step up when teams start giving
- 53:28Speaker 1: key On White that kind of attention.
- 53:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I do wonder you know, Whise I think has
- 53:31Speaker 2: been solid. You know, they're playing a lot of their
- 53:34Speaker 2: two four five defense where they have like two true
- 53:37Speaker 2: d tackles. Yeah, and they're Wise is just not a
- 53:40Speaker 2: very like big or like Stout in that sense. He's
- 53:43Speaker 2: a big dude, but he's he's like taller and has
- 53:45Speaker 2: a higher center of gravity. So they're going with guys
- 53:48Speaker 2: like Farms a quality next to Godshow. I think that's
- 53:51Speaker 2: cutting into his playing time with Wise, Like they've used
- 53:54Speaker 2: him a little bit more standing up than they have
- 53:57Speaker 2: in the years past, just trying to get him on
- 53:58Speaker 2: the field. But he's been effective when he has the
- 54:02Speaker 2: opportunities to rush the passer. Uh, So maybe they can
- 54:05Speaker 2: find ways to get him more involved than other than
- 54:07Speaker 2: it's it's a quality, like a quality is the other
- 54:09Speaker 2: guy that can bring something to the pass rush and
- 54:11Speaker 2: win some one on ones for you on the interior.
- 54:13Speaker 2: But if there's any negative to come out of the
- 54:16Speaker 2: Keyon White thing. There really aren't any true negatives. But
- 54:19Speaker 2: the negative is that now every team is going to
- 54:21Speaker 2: circle key On White on Tuesdays. Yeah, now he's gonna.
- 54:24Speaker 1: This goes back to is we and we're not doing
- 54:26Speaker 1: it now? But we get near the draft and nobody
- 54:28Speaker 1: wants your tackling wide receiver, don't do it. I think
- 54:31Speaker 1: not in the first round.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Second round, but second and third day two pass right
- 54:36Speaker 2: have an extra third round pick.
- 54:37Speaker 1: Now, I feel like we always have like top three
- 54:39Speaker 1: needs and then everything else. I think pass rusher is
- 54:42Speaker 1: that third need next to tackling receiver.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Agreed. I agree with that.
- 54:45Speaker 1: That's pretty pretty clear through two.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Games because they can't right now, they you know, they're
- 54:49Speaker 2: they're towards the bottom of the league. I haven't checked
- 54:51Speaker 2: the updated numbers after last night. I want to say
- 54:53Speaker 2: they're thirty first in the league in pressure right on
- 54:55Speaker 2: defense and they're towards the bottom of the league and
- 54:58Speaker 2: four man pressure rate as well. So they've gotten some
- 55:01Speaker 2: pressure by blitzing, but right now, when they just rush
- 55:04Speaker 2: four guys, it's really Keyon White and a little bit
- 55:07Speaker 2: of Joshua Ucha and that's it.
- 55:08Speaker 1: They are. Next Gen stats has them third to last
- 55:12Speaker 1: twenty four point one percent. Yeah, Chiefs and Falcons are
- 55:14Speaker 1: behind them.
- 55:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Interesting, the Chiefs are down there. Yeah, so they
- 55:18Speaker 2: have to be able to generate some more pressure, especially
- 55:21Speaker 2: with four guys. Like it's one thing to be able
- 55:23Speaker 2: to bring a zero and you get a hurry, Like
- 55:25Speaker 2: that's everybody gets a hurry when they bring a zero,
- 55:27Speaker 2: but like you have to be able to pressure a
- 55:29Speaker 2: little bit. My number one up because I'm an offensive
- 55:32Speaker 2: guy was Hunter Henry.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I had him too.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Your career day sets a new career high and receiving yards,
- 55:38Speaker 2: A lot of it early came against zone, some man
- 55:41Speaker 2: on third down, ran some really good routes on against
- 55:45Speaker 2: man coverage. Had the thirty five yarder on the screen.
- 55:48Speaker 2: It's more of a scheme thing, but goes in the
- 55:51Speaker 2: box score as his thirty five yards. The biggest thing
- 55:54Speaker 2: to me with Henry is that there's a clear trust
- 55:56Speaker 2: there between quarterback and tight end, and he doesn't present,
- 55:59Speaker 2: I mean, doesn't have a whole lot of other guys
- 56:01Speaker 2: that he trust fully right now, it doesn't seem so
- 56:04Speaker 2: if you take Henry out of that equation, I just
- 56:07Speaker 2: don't know where the passing game is gonna be at all.
- 56:10Speaker 2: So I've been impressed with Hunter Henry really going all
- 56:13Speaker 2: the way back to the spring in the summer, and
- 56:16Speaker 2: he's had a nice start to the year and he
- 56:17Speaker 2: was great on Sunday.
- 56:19Speaker 1: And I would say in addition to trust chemistry, yeah,
- 56:22Speaker 1: what I was really impressed with with Henry was Brissette
- 56:25Speaker 1: was having a run around and break the pocket and
- 56:28Speaker 1: the play was breaking down, and he just did a
- 56:30Speaker 1: very good job of quickly recognizing that was happening, breaking
- 56:35Speaker 1: off his route and getting himself to a spot where
- 56:38Speaker 1: Jacoby Brissett had an outlet. So he wasn't just running
- 56:41Speaker 1: away to throw the ball away, but was scrambling to
- 56:43Speaker 1: actually make a play happen. You need somebody on the
- 56:45Speaker 1: other side to be able to open themselves up to
- 56:47Speaker 1: get the ball. That was what stood out to me,
- 56:49Speaker 1: and I had a Hunter Henry on there too, but
- 56:51Speaker 1: his ability to react when the play was breaking down,
- 56:54Speaker 1: and that's something that will translate one Strake Magens and
- 56:56Speaker 1: as well. They're gonna need guys that can improvise. There's
- 56:59Speaker 1: a certain heard of this offense that just needs to
- 57:01Speaker 1: be improvisational and it's not gonna be schemed and it's
- 57:04Speaker 1: going to be up to the players on the field
- 57:06Speaker 1: making snap decisions. Hunter Henry was really good in that
- 57:09Speaker 1: regard in this game.
- 57:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good point. I actually think he did
- 57:11Speaker 2: it a little bit with Mac even though Mac like
- 57:13Speaker 2: didn't have a ton of improv skill. Yeah, like there
- 57:15Speaker 2: was even flashes of it. With a quarterback like Max.
- 57:18Speaker 2: Some more athletic quarterbacks, you can certainly see that more
- 57:21Speaker 2: with him. I thought Brissett's maybe his best play of
- 57:23Speaker 2: this game. They set up like a post wheel to
- 57:26Speaker 2: Jalen Polk and Tarik Wollen. It was really similar to
- 57:30Speaker 2: the interception Bo Nicks through in Week one against his
- 57:33Speaker 2: Seattle defense, where Treik Woollen was like carrying the post
- 57:36Speaker 2: but he was baiting. Yeah, he was baiting Brissette to
- 57:39Speaker 2: make the throw, and as you know, a veteran savvy,
- 57:42Speaker 2: you know, Brissette pulled it down and then he was
- 57:45Speaker 2: like okay, but now, like now where am I going
- 57:47Speaker 2: with this? And he gets outside the pocket and the
- 57:50Speaker 2: zone defender in the middle of the zone comes over
- 57:53Speaker 2: to try to tackle Brissette on the scramble and as
- 57:56Speaker 2: he's coming over, it opens up a huge void for
- 57:59Speaker 2: Hunter Henry Henry just sits right there and waits for
- 58:01Speaker 2: the ball. Persette gave it to him and got him
- 58:03Speaker 2: all the way down inside the red zone. So some
- 58:06Speaker 2: really good play there by both the quarterback and the
- 58:08Speaker 2: tight end. To your point, who is uh? So we
- 58:11Speaker 2: both had Henry and Kean White who's number three?
- 58:13Speaker 1: Antonio Gibson, Yeah, we had kind of the same right, Yeah,
- 58:16Speaker 1: needed to see this from Antonio Gibson. Good game, finally healthy.
- 58:21Speaker 1: Ramandra Stevenson excessive workload, especially on a short week now,
- 58:24Speaker 1: but good, do do it?
- 58:25Speaker 2: Do it? Do they? Remondra Stevenson excessive?
- 58:27Speaker 1: I think already didn't already do it? Did you earlier
- 58:29Speaker 1: in the show? All right, I did. We'll get to it,
- 58:32Speaker 1: or maybe I did it on on Patriots Beat this morning.
- 58:34Speaker 2: But fifty to seventeen shows fifty one touches.
- 58:38Speaker 1: He leads the NFL.
- 58:39Speaker 2: I know he can he give your Gibson take, I
- 58:42Speaker 2: was only okay, Well.
- 58:43Speaker 1: No, The take is that as good as Stevenson's been,
- 58:46Speaker 1: he's been good, He's not going to continue to be
- 58:47Speaker 1: this good if they run him into the ground. And
- 58:50Speaker 1: I think that the coaches need another back that they
- 58:53Speaker 1: trust in order to be able to give Stevenson a
- 58:55Speaker 1: breather to Yeah, to give Stevenson a breather. Gibson was
- 58:59Speaker 1: on the field more in this game, you know, came
- 59:01Speaker 1: off the endo report, was on the field more in
- 59:02Speaker 1: this game, and I think gave the coaches reason to
- 59:05Speaker 1: keep going to him on a short week this week,
- 59:07Speaker 1: specifically to be really telling to see how much they
- 59:10Speaker 1: use him and what that split is. But I don't
- 59:12Speaker 1: you know, you still got to be able to move
- 59:14Speaker 1: the ball at Gibson in the game, especially for a
- 59:16Speaker 1: team that runs the ball as much as they do.
- 59:18Speaker 1: I think Gibson proved in this game that he's a
- 59:20Speaker 1: viable option.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Yeah. I had the running game as a whole as
- 59:24Speaker 2: an up, but Gibson was obviously a huge part of that.
- 59:28Speaker 2: The two biggest things to me with him are just one.
- 59:31Speaker 2: You know, he's got some explosiveness, Like I really feel
- 59:33Speaker 2: like they had the thunder and lightning thing going with
- 59:35Speaker 2: those two guys on Sunday, even more so than against
- 59:39Speaker 2: the Bengals, when it just kind of felt like it
- 59:40Speaker 2: was all Remandre on his shoulders. He has an explosive gear,
- 59:44Speaker 2: like the forty five yarder he breaks a couple of
- 59:47Speaker 2: tackles and pulls away from the defense for a minute
- 59:49Speaker 2: there and was in the open field. I would like
- 59:52Speaker 2: to see them even feed him the ball a little
- 59:54Speaker 2: bit more in those types of space, you know, type
- 59:57Speaker 2: of situations, because they just don't have a whole lot
- 59:59Speaker 2: of eyes that can break big plays off like that.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: I think he is one of them. Like I said
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: earlier in the show, I put the whole running game
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: because this was again the best. They ran a lot
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: of downhill duo and stuff like that. Against the Bengals,
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: they kind of ditched the outside zone. They ran a
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: zone running scheme on Sunday, and they ran it well.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Like that was the first time I've seen a Patriots
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: offense run outside zone outside zone week strong, lead, pin, pull, zone,
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: wind back, which is one of my favorites, like all
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: of the zone family. They ran them all and they
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: ran them all well, and that is very very good
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: to see in terms of like building on things moving forward.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: I really have felt like they've run the ball. I
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: thought the yards after contact numbers in Week one, not
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: to take anything away from Vermandre where a little deceiving.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: They've ran the ball well in two straight weeks. They
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: are one of the better running offenses right now in
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Nash Football game in their fourth and rushing yards, total
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: rushing yards top ten in EPA, top ten, and success rate.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: They're running the football well and that is going to
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: be their foundation. Now they have to go out and
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: scheme some stuff off of it, but that has that
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: had to be the foundation. Like if they were gonna
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: come into these games and average two yards to carry,
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: then they would have gotten shut out in the first
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: two weeks of the season. So their running game is
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: doing something to liven up this offense is actually I'm
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: into it. It's been fun to watch. The way that
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: they've designed it, the way that they've blocked it has
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: been interesting and it's been very very you know, forty
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: nine ers esque. We're getting there. There's been some more
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: motion this week, some interesting blocking angles, you know, a
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: wrap blocks and you're kind of putting those guys up
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: to the second level and things like that. It's they
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: ran the ball well. This was not Remondro Stevenson broke
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: fourteen tackles and they've grained two hundred yards after contact
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: like no, this was. They actually opened some holes, especially
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: in the zone running game, and got some things going
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: in the run game. That's good. Now, if they can
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: just pass block, they'll have an offer.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: You know, I'll just say that to go back to
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: what you're saying about Gibson, I wouldn't hate seeing them
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: use some some twenty one personnel and little Pony well
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: either traditionally, like this is a guy that played receiver
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: in college. Yeah, and just as a way to get
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: another like you said, explosive ball of Carrer on the field.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: This is a guy that ran a four three nine forty.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Line him up in the slot. They did a couple
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: of times. Line him up, you know, as a receiver,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: as a slot receiver. If you could do that with
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: Stevenson in the game, I feel like you can maybe,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: you know, if you have them both on the field,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: defense kind of packs the box and then you put
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Gibson out. I've been I mean, I've been trying to
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: get them to do this for yeah, I mean going
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: back to time Montgomery, right, I want them to do
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: this where put your running backs on the field to
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: use one as a receiver. I guess I'm calling for
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: it again.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Yeah, let's let's see him split out, like if you
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: get a matchup against a linebacker, out there, right, maybe
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: he wins on a vertical or wheel or something like
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: that from the backfield. Like also, you know if you
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: get that matchup out there and maybe they'd zone and
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: you have an indicator now and you have a receiver
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: on the inside against a safety or a linebacker type like,
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: now you have a matchup on the inside of the
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: feel like this is what the Patriots used to do
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: all the time with Brady James, White Veren, you know
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: all those fulk you know all those guys, Like that's
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: how you kind of play that chess match in that
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: that formation game. All right, let's get to the downs.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Yes, let's get to the downs number one. I mean
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: we're see, we like discussed the game and then we
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: do this and it's all discussions we've already had. That's,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: I guess is good because it makes a segment move quicker.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Just see offensive line as a whole. You can't really
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: single anybody out again, Michael Jordan was fine, Yeah, so
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: if you want to take him out, but rough rough game.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: If I had to pick one, Mike on Winno, Mike,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: when Winno really struggled in this game.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: So Mike I went. It was on my list, mainly
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: because he's the eighteen million dollar man, Like I'm not
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: gonna sit here and put the offensive line struggles on
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: a rookie in his second career start, or on Vederian Low,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: who's Elliott Wolf's fault, Like I'm not gonna do that,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Like this is this is your eighteen million dollar offensive lineman.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: This is your the guy that's supposed to be the
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: anchor of this line moving forward. He's playing out of position.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: All that excuse making is totally fair if you want
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: to play that card, but just in general, like he's
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: got to be better than that, especially with the game
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: on the line. Like I thought that was the biggest
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: part of it was. It wasn't just like okay, you know,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: he gave up some hurries early on in the game.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: He got beat in key situations late in the game, right,
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: and that they just can't have from the guy that
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: they're paying sixty million dollars a year or two over
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: the next three years. So I had on Winu. My
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: number one down though, was actually the defensive coaching staff.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: I put Covington and Meyo on this card. I think
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: both those guys are irresponsible for the defense as a whole.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: I just thought that they got a little too cute,
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: a little too exotic. Yeah, I part of me feels like,
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: and this is like a half big take, but part
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: of me feels like they just want to put a
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: bunch of cool shit on film and just like see
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: what happens. Like, sorry, I swear. I was like a
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: little swear. Does that count?
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: No, I'm kind of and honestly, I think they to
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: a different extent sort did that on the offense set
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: of the Yeah, my number two is to play calling
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: on both sides. I think there were there were play
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: calling gaps on both sides of the ball.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: My concern going in was that Covington was gonna be
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: a little bit too aggressive with blitzing. Now, my concern
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: watching the way that he wants to run the scheme,
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: because we all always have to have a concern, right,
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: So my concern with the way that they're running it
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: now is that he's just trying to do all this
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: like McDonald bravens, like exotic rotations and disguises, and we're
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: bringing guys from every and it's just like trying to flex,
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: you know, like I have all these tools in my toolbox,
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: whereas like Bill would have just been like, well, they
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: have DK, they have Lockett, they have Smith and jigba. Uh.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: These are our matchups in Manta man coverage. You're gonna
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: have help here and help there. Go get it right.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Especially against the veteran quarterback. It's gonna be a lot
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: harder to fool.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Yeah, And we'll get to that in the second with
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: with the Jets. When we start previewing talking about Aaron
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: Rodgers number three down.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: Special teams, Yeah, two big special I.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: Know that you're going to hit these notes, so I
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: just don't even need to.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: So Obviously the blockfield goal, I put more fault on that.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: I think if that's a thirty nine yard field goal
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: instead of forty eight, they hit it. Yeah, it changed
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: the trajectory of the ball, but you always blocked the
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: inside man. Austin Hooper went for the outside guy, allows
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Julian Love a free rush. I don't know what happened there.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: We'll see if Austin Hooper's back in that spot this
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: week or if they replace him the other gaff allowing
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: a twenty three yard punt return. Yeah, at the end
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: of the first half which led to three points. And
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: I don't want to fault Bryce Bhinger for the kick,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: but he did OutKick his coverage a little bit. But
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: you had O'Shane semen Is missed on a tackle. He
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: had a couple other guys that didn't think they were
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: space well coming down the field and coverage. Barger's gonna
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: kick it a long way. You got to adapt and
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: adjust your coverage to compensate for that. So, whatever it is,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: you shouldn't be along with twenty three year punt returns,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: especially not in that spot.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a both fair gripes. Like when your margins
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: are as thin as there there as are, you can't
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: be missing field goals and giving up big punt reachers.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: This is how they lost games last year to it,
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: you know, Chad Ryland missing field goals and them having
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: gaffs on special teams. Like when you're winning, you know,
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: when you have to win on the margins and you
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: have a very very narrow path to victory, you can't
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: be one of those teams that's having those things happen.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: Like I hate I let you talk about special teams
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: in game management. That's like your side of the street, yea,
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: But when you're talking about these narrow paths to victory
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: with this football team, Like these are all fair gripes,
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: Like the details need to be buttoned up like they
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: were in Cincinnati. Like that's the way that I viewed
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: at least, all right, So you you gave your three, right,
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: it was my.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Yeah, that was my three.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Okay, my last one, just to go back to the
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: defensive side of the ball. Then I have one like
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: kind of one like last week of fourth one here
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: in a second, just Kyle and Christian Gonzales just together.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: I don't know who to blame. I'm not gonna point fingers.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: I don't know the call. I don't know the scheme.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: They didn't give us a ton after the game. But
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: you just can't let DK Metcalf run by you for
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: a fifty six yard touchdown. If he mosses you, that's fine,
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: that that happens. It's he's a really good player. It
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: is what it is, like the assignment breakdowns and the
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: mental lapses. I can't have it, like this team cannot
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: afford to give up explosive touchdowns like that.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: And that goes to my point, where like did that
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: happen because the play calling was too complex? It might
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: have so that's kind of where ill that.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: It also did sound like Dougar said after the game
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: that he checked into it. Maybe it was too late
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: of a check yeah, and that sort of thing. But like,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: can we just go back to their playing cover zero
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: and they're in mant to man and you have this
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: guy and I have that guy like for maybe a week,
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: Like let's let's take I look, I love a good
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: match coverage, all right, I love it. I think when
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: it works, it works beautifully and it looks awesome and
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. But clearly they have some
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: issues with those coverages of like you know, carrying verticals
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: and who's you know who guys who and things like that.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: You can't have both guys jumped the route underneath and
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: then have the best player on the field for the
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: opponent just wide open. Like at least they can't happen,
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: just can't play.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Fourth and final thing here on my downs list, take
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: them to the hill. They they had an opportunity to
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: take them to the hill. They had an opportunity. It
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: was what first and down from the twenty five yard
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: line twenty one? Take them to the hill? Like what happened?
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: What did the bam ball.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: What did I say last week? The Seahawks are mentally
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: tougher than the Bengals. They were not going to tap
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: out the way the Bengals did. Yeah, you saw that.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: If you're girod Mao, because it's our job to an
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: extent to come on here and talk about all the
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: big picture of like they don't have the personnel to
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: do this, they don't have the like all that kind
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: of stuff. But if you're gird Mayo, what's got to
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: keep you up at night after that game against Seattle
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: is that you had first and ten from the twenty
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: one yard line with about four or five minutes to go.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: You have to take them to the hill mantra, and
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: you just you couldn't get points there. You know, like
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: if you get points there, the game's probably over and
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: you probably win the football game. Even if you get
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: a field goal out of that drive. I don't know
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: if they're scoring a touchdown against your defense, Like the
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: field goal is one thing. A touchdown, I don't know.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: So those are those are our ups and downs. Let's
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: take some of these calls and people have been waiting,
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: and then we'll talk a little jets before we wrap
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: things up. Here Patty, if you're still there. You were
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: an aguam and you were on the line. What's up, Patty?
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: What's up? Guys?
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: How you doing? Sorry to keep you on hold for
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: so long. We had a lot to talk about.
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: Hey, come on, you say that every week and every
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: we got it. I tell you, I don't care, it
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: doesn't matter. I want to bring up a couple of
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: things to you guys. The first thing I watched I
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: watched a little bit of the Jets game this past weekend,
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: and I'll tell you who really impressed me was was
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: brailing out. And I wanted to get your guys thoughts
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: on that two headed snake of him and Breeze Hall,
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: because I mean, this is probably gonna be our toughest
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: test for a run defense this coming week. And the
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: other thing I wanted to bring up and get your
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: guys opinion on was I heard John zana Stay on
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: the postgame show on Sunday night that you know, he
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: understands that Drake may may not play for a long time.
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: But he said, and I'm one behind him on that,
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: that if he's not gonna play, you've got to get
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: you got to start getting some of these guys like Polk,
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: I know he's it is this his Rooki year, but Polk,
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: Pop Douglas and Taikwan, you gotta you have to see
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: what you have with those guys. And I just wanted
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: to get your guys thoughts on that. And I'll take
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: it off here. And Evan never apologized to keep me
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: on hold, buddy.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Okay, thanks, Patty, thanks for the call. I appreciate it.
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: The first point. Sorry he said that. He just said
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: a lot of things. Running back, Yeah, we we were.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: We definitely could pull the archives of us talking about
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: Braylen Allen during the draft. Wisconsin running back six one
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: two thirty five, like the exact bowling ball that you
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: would picture a Patriots back of old Lagarrett Blunt if
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: he will, like you know, type of running back, explosive downhill,
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: sturdy runner, like just run run through a you know
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: what's face right type of guy.
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: Yeah, they have a really good run game. That was
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: the thing that stood out to me too, Patty, just
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: watching the Jets film, like you always you think about
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers and like he's an MVP quarterback and a
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: future Hall of Famer and all this kind of stuff,
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: But it really felt like breese Hall and then like
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: the complement of Allen, like that was sort of the
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: straw that was stirring the drink. Like they the first
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: like three or four plays at the game against Tennessee,
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: it's Bresall, Bresall, Bresaw, breese Hall, right, Like they're just
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: trying to feed this guy. We talk about Rogers, we
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: talk about Wilson obviously on the outside, but to me,
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: this is the run game and not just the run
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: game with these two guys. They threw touchdowns to both
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: these guys too. You know, Brandon Allen on a screen,
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Bresall flexed out on a go route that I was
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: talking about earlier with Gibson gets a linebacker matchup, Rogers
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: puts it on him for a touchdown on a on
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: an empty formation. So good running game, good running backs.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Brisall is a stud. He's an explosive back. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: what do you like about Braylen Allen?
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: I kind of talked about this last week, Just the
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: combination of power and agility.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Big downhill runner. But if you just try to square
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: him up and say all right, I'm gonna take the
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: hit and bring him down, he can run around you.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: So he's a guy you got it. It takes multiple
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: people to tackle him. And in the modern game, especially
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: when when there's two high safeties a lot and there's
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: there's fewer players in the box, he can do some
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: real damage. He can do some real damage. He's also experienced.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: He played a ton even though it's only twenty years old.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: I think he's the youngest player in the league.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: He is played it.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: I think he had over two hundred carries a Wisconsin
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: So yeah, a guy that that is. He's a challenge
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: in a lot of different ways.
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: Classic Wisconsin Big ten football. Yes, this is a Wiscon
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: like Melvin Gordon. Yeah, James White was a little different.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: But they went through all these backs who was John C.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Taylor, Monty Ball, like another one from Wiscon. Not to
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: say James White isn't great, but like they had all
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: these just big, powerful downhill runners, and then James White
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: kind of supplemented all of it. He was there with
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: Melvin Gordon. And there's a third guy in that backfield too.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I like Brylen Allen's game from the draft
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: when we were talking about that third running back spot,
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: and maybe he went higher. I went third round right,
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: he went pretty high.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Yeah, so I had him as the second best back
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: behind Corum.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, he's a he's a good player. Was the
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: other thing? Oh, the receivers. Yeah, look, we all would
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: agreed that I Corey Clement was the other back in
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: the oh yeah, by the way, Oh yeah, they kind
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: of more like a James White type.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: Also he was out of bounds, Melvin Gordon, James White,
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Corey Clement was a freshman, and Adam Bounds. Yes, yeah,
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: h the biggest thing, I yeah, we would all like
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: to see, you know, these young receivers. Yeah. I don't
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: know if we put Taekwon still in that book. I
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: guess it's year three, it's still relatively speaking. But Baker, Pop, Douglas, Oh.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: James White, Melvin Gordon, Monty ball together the year before too.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: That's a been Derek Watt, that's a backfield.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Sorry, uh, Jalen Polk, I he's been opened a couple
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: of times. You know you obviously calmed the touchdown. I
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: thought he was open on the crossing route, drifted a
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: little bit on the route. Would have liked to have
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: seen him level it off, little little like route running
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: thing quickly when you run a crossing route on like
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: post cross and those these these bootleg schemes. If you
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: get man to man coverage, they want you to stack
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: the corner like they want you to level it off
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: coming across the field so that the corner can't undercut
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: the route. If you're running the route on a crossing
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: round against against zone, then it's just running to the void, right,
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: like just take it's a straight line route right into
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: the void on the crossing route that that Jacobi threw
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: at his feet, that wasn't a good throw. But if
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: he levels it off a little bit more coming across
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: the field, it just makes the throw a little bit
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: easier for the quarterback because if Jacobe misses that throw inside,
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: now it's a pick right because the corners trailing him
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: and he's gonna undercut it, so he's got to kind
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: of lay it out in front of him, which makes
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: it a harder throw. Just like have the rookie just
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: level it off. He did such a good job of
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: it on the play that on Drake May's won in
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: the preseason against Washington. You know that that that's just
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: a little coaching point there, all right, ganesh is in Cambridge.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: What's up, gesh, can.
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: You hear me?
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: Yes, go for it.
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: Thanks for taking me call. Yeah, I joined this a
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: little bit late, so sorry if by bringing up something
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: that you already talked about. But my point is kind
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: of a two point discussion. So the first thing is
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: Coach Mayo keeps stressing after these games and they push
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: the ball down the field, and right now, obviously we're
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: stan at least for the next week. So like, well
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: from at this when in his career, I don't think
- 1:17:01Speaker 5: his you know, actually down the field is that great anymore.
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: And his arms trends also was a little suspect during
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: the preseason and he was trying to make some of
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: these throws down the field to Taekwon whatever.
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: So I just hope that.
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: You know, they don't force him to any make any
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: down the field throws on Thursday, kind of if it's
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: in his head or you know, the play call and
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: he's kind of he's kind of feeling the pressure to
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: make you know, these push the ball down the field.
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: And this kind of relates to my part second part,
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: which is like, you know, I want to get your
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: y'alls thought on the situation in Chicago that Kile Gilliams
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: is in and personally I feel like the experience that
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: he's getting from the first two games, you know, with
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: that situation's offenses and that whole line and some of
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: their receivers banged up. But he's still I think, even
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: though his members are not statistically great, I think he's
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: still getting a lot of great experience, whether you know,
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: on the on the interceptions, like he's used to making
- 1:17:58Speaker 5: those off platform platform off cuture throws and he's you know,
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: realizing that what there was he can make and cannot make.
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: So I think that relates a lot to you know,
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: May and his game as well. So kind of want
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: to know your thought on Like obviously I don't think
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: he should be they should be put in like this
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: week or next week, but like you know, sooner than later.
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: He can only get so much from learning under you know,
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: from seeing from Brissett more get gets more and valuable
- 1:18:22Speaker 5: experience from actually getting these reps on the field and
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: seeing what throws he can make and can't make, and
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: you know, if it's a quicker or faster or whatever.
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: So yeah, thanks for taking my call and I'm off
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: there now.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: Thanks thanks for the call. So to the first point.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: I agree with the larger point that you don't want
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: it to be like an overcorrection where all of a sudden,
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: now they come out Thursday night and their bombs away.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: You don't want to force something you don't have the
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: ability to do. That doesn't help anybody.
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the one thing, you know, I mentioned
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: it when we're talking about a VP is just they
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: did it once in Cincinnati where they came out of
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: halftime and they just threw like an iso go ball
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: to Taikwan.
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Which Pulk was open on the other side.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't necessarily love that, right, it's not the best.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: But the one thing that I do see with Jacoby
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: that he can do is kind of make those dropping
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: in the bucket like over the shoulder throws. He's not
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: necessarily going to like drive one into a tight window
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: down the field, you know, a post in between two
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: safeties or something like that, or hit a sixty yard
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: bomb down the field, but he can take a chunk
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: out of the defense if he can get you know,
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: Taekwon or Polk, you know, give him a chance or
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: whatever on one of these vertical routes. Like just that's
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: the part of that I don't see them doing a
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: ton of or Jacobi not looking a ton for is
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: like if you have press coverage and you have a
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: matchup where you have Taekwon against the corner and man
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: to man and it's clearly pressed on the outside, Like
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: just every once in a while, just give him a chance, right,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: Like throw a ball that's only going to be caught
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: or going to be out of bounds, Like don't don't
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: turn it over on purpose or anything silly, but just
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: get like every once in a while, once twice a game,
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: I would like to see them just kind of give
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: them a chance to make a play on it. Like
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: I thought the game in Cincinnati was an example of that,
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: Like it didn't work, but at least they gave it
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: a chance to see if they could take a chunk out.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: Yeah, but like you said, don't, just don't force it.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: Just don't. If they come out and force them, gonna
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: be really worried because now it's like, all right, so
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: the fans are calling the plays right right, stick to
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: Can you make it work organically?
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: Can can you find ways within your system to help,
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: whether that's figure out ways to improve the pass blocking
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: or figure out other ways to create explosive plays where
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: maybe it's not, you know, as much of a factor
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: that they can't work the ball down the field.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just it's tough, Like they can't block a
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: play like leak right, Like it just takes too long,
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: Like they can't They're trying to run these bootlegs and
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: like hit receivers down the field and Jacoby's having issues
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: making those throws on the move and there's pressure in
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: his face some of the time too, and that doesn't help.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: Like you it just seems to me like they're gonna
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: have to just like have them drop back, pop up
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: and throw go ball and like that Taekwon or Polk
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: or someone just makes a play on a ball out
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: there and it's not efficient. Like that's not a good
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: way to live, right, We've seen that over here here
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: for the last couple of years, like trying to force
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: feed that to like DeVante Parker or something like that,
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: and it's it's not a good way to live. But
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: that's sort of where they're at with that. William is
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: in Philly. What's up, William? William? You're there, William?
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: He lou one.

- 1:22:10Speaker 2: I know we got some calls. I'll get you guys
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: in the second, I promise, but I do want to
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: get to some of the things about the Jets before
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: we wrap it up here. Start with Rogers. He's not washed.
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: I'm not saying that, but he's a rusty like. I
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: think That's where I'm about like comfortable going with it
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: for now. I need to see more before I'm gonna
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: say he's washed. He's still got that ability to make
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: some throws from some different arm angles and like feather
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: go balls like over the shoulder and things like that.
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: Had a beautiful one to Garrett Wilson, and Wilson made
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: a great adjustment almost like wrong shouldered it and then
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: he kind of came back and made the catch. You know,
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: he still has that like if you give him that
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: matchup on the outside, Roger's gonna pop up and he's
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: gonna throw that thing. Like that's right, that's where he's at.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: There were some wonky play in the pocket. I thought
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: from this Tennessee tape like he just missed gett I
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: sent one to you over text actually like just missing
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: Garrett Wilson wide open and then just kind of seeing
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: ghosts and running into pressure. The stats very early on,
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: it's it's very very early. His under pressure and under
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: blitz pressure stats are not good. And that sometimes can
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: come with a forty year old quarterback, Like you see
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: them take those hits. He gets hurt, you know last
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: year on a hit like those things can come. Don't
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: think he's like the improviser or the mobile athlete that
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: he once was too, which maybe is part of it.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: Because he doesn't have that, you know, es capability that
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: he once did. But we talked about it with the
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: Seahawks review. The big thing to me with this Jets
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: offense and with Rogers is that what he's good at
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: still is hunting matchups and getting the ball out quickly.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: He has the second fastest time to throw in the
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: NFL right now, two point two six seconds. He's barely
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: ever under pressure because he's never waits for the pressure
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: late career.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: Brady, Yeah, I think you compared him to that last night.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: I'll just say on the offense as a hole and
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: Rogers is a part of this, it still feels pretty discombobulated.
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: It still doesn't feel like there's a lot of chemistry.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: There's still things that look like the Zach Wilson Jets. Now,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: obviously Rogers is a lot better than Zach Wilson, but
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: I think a lot of Zach Wilson's problem was he
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: he was not concerned with the other ten guys on
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: the field. Zach Wilson would get up to the line
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: and do Zach Wilson. There was no get making sure.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: But he's set making sure. But he's on the same page.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: You know that basic quarterbacking stuff that comes with playing
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: the position. Rogers is obviously better about that, but there's
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: still times where I look at it and it's like,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: did these guys all just start playing together last week?
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: Like they don't look like a team that it's really
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: on the same page offensely defensively is the exact opposite.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: I don't want to come across what I'm saying that
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: the whole team, but the offense still looks Jets ish,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: if you know what I mean. Yeah, and some of
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: that might just be its early in the year and
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: watch this will be the game that suddenly everything clicks
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: for him and everybody's back on the same page. But
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: really short week, you don't expect them to maybe make
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: a ton of strides. Now it's up to the Patriots
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: capitalize off of that. The thing about an offense, it's
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: not on the same page. They're easy to turn over
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: and no turnovers last week? Boy was that game calling
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: for one. The defense needs to take advantage of this
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: turnovers plural this week if the Patriots want to win
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: this game.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: Just I said it earlier about all the disguises and
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: the exotics and like all this stuff that they're they're
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: trying to run defensively. This feels to me like a
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: week where you throw all that out and you say, Gonzo,
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: you got Garrett Wilson will give you some help over
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: there every once in a while, and let's stop the run.
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: Let's game plan Breese Hall and have some some tricks.
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: You know, when he goes out wide. We're not gonna
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: put Jilani Tavai on Breese Hall outside, We're gonna put Dugger.
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: We're gonna put you know, a safety type or a
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: cover type over there. Let's game plan Breese Hall. Let's
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: get Gonzo on Garrett Wilson like he was last year
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: in that matchup early in the season, and let's just
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: do what we do, Like, let's not try to confuse
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers. You are not going to confuse Aaron Rodgers.
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: He's seeing everything. And this is not the week to
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: just like start to spin the dial and have all
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: these crazy, crazy disguises and coverage rotations and things like that.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: I want to see them get It's a Thursday night
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: game to begin with, so that's a big part of it. Like,
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: you're not going to reinvent the wheel in three days.
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: You're not going to have a Super Bowl game plan
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: on a Thursday night football game. So get back to
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: your basic core stuff and just do what you do best.
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: I still come back to with this defense that they
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: what they do best is shadow guys and play man coverage.
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: Like that to me is still there has to be
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: their bread and butter. And right now, I'm not sure
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: if they have something that they are fully trusting that
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: this is like who this is our identity identity defensively,
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: like this is what we right now they want their
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: identity to be. We don't have an identity, and I
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: don't know if I necessarily love that. Like I'd much
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: rather them have at least one thing. You know, we're
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: a man to man defense, we're a pressure defense. We're
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: this like have one thing that you can just lock
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: in on and say that this is what we're really
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: good at. I hope that comes back this week and
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: then I would you know, normally you would say you
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: don't blitz a quarterback like Rogers, right because polls guys
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: out of coverage and he's going to see it and
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: he's going to get the ball out quickly. But I
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: would test it because the numbers, like I said, early,
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: you mentioned the chemistry and sort of the rhythm of
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: the offense is a little bit off. It doesn't seem
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: like he knows where his outlets are against pressure, and
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: he doesn't have the mobility that he had five years
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: ago to run away from guys in this league. So
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: if you get to him and you hit him, I
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: do think you could rattle him a little bit at
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: this stage of his career. Looked like Tennessee did a
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: little bit early on in that game, like he had
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: some dropbacks are I was like that, where is he going?
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: You know, like, what are we doing here? It doesn't
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: look like Aaron Rodgers. So I wouldn't blitz him often,
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: Like I wouldn't come after him fifty percent of the
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: time anything like that. But I don't hate just seeing
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: if he's gonna see some ghost. See what happens if
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: you turn the pressu out, Yeah, turn the heat up
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: on them all. Yeah, Yeah, that's what happens when you
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: turn forty, right, Like it does all of a sudden,
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: your mobility just isn't as good as it once was.
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: Unless yeah, well even him. You know, the biggest difference
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: with Brady then I see with Rogers is Rogers is
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: a lot of stuff near the line of scrimmage. Like
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: it's just that quick slide of hand with him, you
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: know that he's always had, whereas with Brady, he was
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: just throwing bombs. Like he just hit the top of
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: his drop and he just throws. You know, this is
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: a little bit different, but the same thing. You know,
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: after a while, all these quarterbacks, especially when you get
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: hurtles late in your career and you have such a
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: serious injury like Rogers had with his achilles, you can
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: you can see that happening. They're very a sort of
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: I don't want to say one dimensional, because they they
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: do run a pass okay, but like it's very it's
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: like two guys. It's Breese Hall, it's Garrett Wilson, and
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: then like maybe Brandon Allen's like starting to emerge a
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: little bit. But it's the run game and the backfield
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: and all that. It's a kind of similar category. And
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: then it's like nothing else, you know, like they really
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: don't have anything else. Like Lazard is okay, they try
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: to get him involved because he Rogers is in the
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: circle of trust with Rogers from the Green Bay days,
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: but like there's really nothing that like terrifies me out
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: of this passing game outside of Garrett Wilson and like
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: if you get a bad matchup with Briest Hall, you know,
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: like those are kind of the two things. Defensively for
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: the Jets. It's they're playing a little bit more man coverage,
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: but it's early, Like I'm not ready to say that
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: that's a true trendsetter. They are a quarters cover three defense.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: They play it really really well. They have not very
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: many bells and whistles. They don't blitz a ton, they
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: don't do a ton of crazy things on their defensive
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: side of the football. They just have three really good
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: layers to this defense.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: So a couple things. You got to be able to
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: run the ball again. Yeah, I'm gonna go back to
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: a game playing point I made last year for the
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: opener against the Eagles. Tell Hi if you remember this one. Yes,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: for the Patriot to have success comes down to very
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: simple math. I am gonna use math. Oh, good, five
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: being greater than four. They are gonna rush four guys, Yeah,
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: pretty much all they're gonna do. Yeah, can your five
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: blockers stop there four rushers? You're going to have an
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: advantage in terms of the numbers.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good point.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: They actually may have an opportunity to get Cobra set
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: some time. Now. This is also the best secondary they're
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: playing it. I don't think guys are gonna be running
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: open as regularly as they were in those first two games.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: But this game is set up for you to actually
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: have some time to throw if you can get it.
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: They're gonna have a rookie right tackle at left tackle
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: there Michael Win who's gonna be back at right tackle
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: where he struggled. They're not gonna have a lot of depth.
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: First all, everybody's hurt, period, Like everybody's dealing with something,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: even if they're playing. They don't have a lot of depth. Like,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: there's a lot to manage there. But if you can
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: make five greater than four, you might have a chance.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: Miss mass Special of the Week the Patriots offensive line
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: against the Jets defensive front. This is the number one
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: pass in the league against the number pass which blocking again,
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: it kills me. You have five guys to block four guys.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: I know they're good, but that should be in the
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: offense advantage.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: Yeah, they have some injuries, you know, Jermaine Johnson's out obviously,
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: Hassan Reddick is not playing, but a friend of the program,
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: Brandon Thorn always posts puts out like a matchup column
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: about the trenches, like offensive defensive line. Usually he picks
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: one matchup where he's just like red alert, like this
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: is not a good matchup for this team. I would
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: have to think that the Patriots offensive line against the
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Jets front is going to be number one on his
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: list like that, It is a huge mismatch Quentin Williams,
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: Like I see nightmares of Quentin Williams at this point, and.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: I'm sure they're probably gonna line him up right across
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: from lane Robinson. Yeah, he had, say good luck rookie.
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: In two games last year against the Patriots, two sacks,
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: twelve quarterback pressures, six and six twelve quarterback pressure. He's
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: a menace. He's still on the field. We'll see about CJ. Moseley.
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: Looks like he's kind of up in the air a
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: little bit with his status on the short week. But
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: their defense, it's very sound. They do what they do,
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: they do it at a really high level. They don't
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: give up a lot of chunk plays. Not that the
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: Patriots are making a lot of those, but they just
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: don't in the passing game, and they are a team
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: that is designed to make you march like they are
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: gonna make you go in the past game five six yards.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: Well, that's an advantage for the Patriots here because the
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: Jets are set up to take away the thing the
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: Patriots aren't doing anyway.
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: Yeah, this is one of those teams that you know,
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: this defense and the way they're built defensively is for
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: the modern game, right like they are built to stop
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: josh Allen Intua in like these high power offenses where
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: they're gonna say, we're gonna make you snap the ball
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: as much as possible. We're gonna make you go on
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: a ten twelve thirteen play scoring drive. We're not gonna
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: give it to you in one play. The Patriots only
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: go on ten twelve thirteen play scoring drives. Last thing
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: about this matchup on side of the ball, I would
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: say that this is a week where they probably ditch
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: outside zone. Again, this is not a defense you want
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: to go sideline to sideline against. Run out of speed
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: right at them, right like, just get on some double teams,
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: maybe some counter or some draw or something like that
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: to get those guys up the field, because they will
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: go up the field like in a hurry and try
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: to get downhill. On this team, this is a gap
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: run game. This is not trying to you know, make
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: it to the corner, especially they you know, big thing
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: about Quarters defenses is that the safeties are freed up
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: to run the alley in the run game. So even
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: though it's it's a too high shell and you think
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: you have this light box, if you try to get
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: to the alley, those safeties are just going to fast
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: flo out of the alley really quickly. That's like what
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: makes Quarters actually a pretty good run defense, honestly. So
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: that's a tough part about it. Just watching their tape
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: last year. Browns played this team in Week seventeen the
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: last year, beating them thirty seven to twenty with Joe Flacco,
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: and they just ran the ball right at them, like
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: they ran some jumbo with like two tight ends and
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: at tackle eligible. They had like seven dudes and one
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: wide receiver out wide and they just ran it right
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: at him. And that's exactly what I expect them to
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: do again this week. They can run on this team.
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: I believe that they can run on this team. The
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: Niners did in Week one. Yeah, the Niners did in
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: Week one, the Browns did last year. The Patriots ran
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: on them a little bit last year. The passing game
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: is gonna be what we've seen for the first two weeks.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: But I really do strongly believe that as long as
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: they don't get married to outside zone and they don't
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: try to win foot races to the corner against this team,
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: they can run on this football team, especially if Mosley
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: doesn't play like that. That's a big part of that.
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: Kind of like there Bentley. So I would say, run
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: it right downhill at them, and uh and you know,
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: just picking yeah, pick it apart in the passing game,
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: pick those short zones apart, just thinking dunk it down
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: the field, and it's not gonna be pretty, but you'll
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: shorten the game and you'll have a th team plays
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: scoring drive at some point and hopefully that will get
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: you into a sixteen to ten game like you had
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: in Cincinnati. Really take these last two calls, and then
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: we got to get going here to practice. But William
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: is back on the line. What's up, William? Hey, how
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: you doing doing well? What you got all right?
- 1:35:19Speaker 6: All right? Okay, so just well one is not really
- 1:35:22Speaker 6: a question though I just want to I got to
- 1:35:24Speaker 6: get you some break, and I can't believe I'm doing this.
- 1:35:27Speaker 6: All right. You kind of won me over with the
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: tackle name thanks to Alex. He was saying and watched
- 1:35:32Speaker 6: LSU game. I guess when he played South Carolina. Yeah,
- 1:35:36Speaker 6: Will Campbell is Yeah, he's legit, man.
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: That was like his worst game of the year too.
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: Everybody is freaking out about that game. Yeah, sorry, yeah,
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: sorry not to cut you off with him. Everybody was
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: I haven't watched it, but everybody's freaking out that he
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: was terrible. PFF had him with two quarterback pressures along
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: the quarterback.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: One of them was like he got walked back and
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: it was like the third play the game.
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: Yes, that's probably why.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: Also the other thing, people don't know South Carolina's ends studs. Yeah,
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: like neither one of them are gonna be in the
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: draft this year. The both two young. One is a
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: true freshman, but future first round probably top fifteen picks,
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: all right. Emery Jones, the other tackle, who's a projected
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: first round pick, didn't have as good of a game,
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: so I think they got bunched together. But yeah, if
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: you like Will Campbell in that game, you're gonna be
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: really impressed when you see him for the rest of
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: the year.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: If that's his worse then right, exact, pretty good shame? Yeah,
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: what it else he got William?
- 1:36:26Speaker 6: Okay? And last or not least since Alex do this
- 1:36:30Speaker 6: out there time? All right, you gotta splink manack. You
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: explain it to me, Alex, Like what okay, you're saying
- 1:36:37Speaker 6: their page? Uh if they can go back to DK Metcalf,
- 1:36:40Speaker 6: what would a trade or something look like? Because I
- 1:36:43Speaker 6: don't know how him here and you already you got
- 1:36:46Speaker 6: declined two times with Calvin Ridley and Brandon I even
- 1:36:50Speaker 6: though we should see their pitchers are not scared to spend.
- 1:36:52Speaker 6: But the fact is, how you going to bring him?
- 1:36:55Speaker 6: How would that work?
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: Like you know what I mean?
- 1:36:56Speaker 6: Could you give me some type of lamp?
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: Like what would that look like?
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: So thanks for the calling.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Here's the call. DK Metcalf is essentially in the last
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: year of his deal. He's under contract next year, but
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: there's no guaranteed money in a thirty two million dollar
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: cap hit, so that's obviously no go for either side.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: Like he's not playing on that. He's gonna need a
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: new contract, just like all these receivers do, and at
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: some point I'm sure the Niners will look to the
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: Seahawks will look to move him. Now, look, they're off
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: to a two and zero start, so maybe this kind
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: of throws a wrench in my plan. I didn't think
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: they're gonna be that good. Still a lot of season left.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: They feel like a team that's at a natural rebuilding point.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: Gino Smith is not a long term answer. Quarterback Tyler
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: Lockett's aging out. They've got some older players on the
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: defensive side of the ball as well. Does does dk
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: Metcalf want to stick around for that? Do they want
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: him rather than maybe the picks they could get to
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: help the position themselves to draft a quarterback or just
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: reload that offense overall? What does a trade look like?
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: I think you make the same trade you made with
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Brandon Ayu. It's a second, a fourth, and either another
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: high Day three pick or a player. I don't know
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: how much they want Kendrick Borne, but like you throw
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: in a second or fourth this year, throwing a third
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: or fourth next year on top of that, and then
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: you give him you offer him essentially you're gonna offer you.
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: It's gonna have to be a little more because it'll
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: be a year from now and the GAP's gone up
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: and you're gonna have to, you know, equate the inflation
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: the league with that. But to me, that's what it
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: looks like. That that's how you get it done. And
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: does he want to come here? I guess it's the
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: last part of that that he was asking about. Well,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: that's where Drake May comes in. Does Drake May show
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: enough this year that you can sell the DK Metcalf?
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: This is the guy we're gonna have thrown you the football.
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: And DK Metcalf sees that and says, yeah, I'm gonna
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna be able to put up some numbers with
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: this guy throwing me the football.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it's we always look at the list. It's not
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: the guys like Higgins that are going into free agency,
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: it's the pre agency guys. It's the guys that are
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: gonna be free agents in twenty six because those are
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: the guys that are gonna start wanting contracts now. They're
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: going to start to run themselves.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: I would say, especially Metcalf, because again it's just not
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: realistic for either side. This isn't a thing where like
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: one side's gonna have leverage because it's favorable. Metcalf has
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: no guaranteed money and the Seahawks have a thirty two
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: million dollar cap. I don't know why this year.
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: Exists in his contract, yeah, honestly, and like it's not
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: as fifty year option, right, No, I think this is
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: his second contract.
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: Okay, so I don't know what this is. Maybe Pat's cap.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: Miguel could explain this better than me, but he's not
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: playing on that. He's not. There's no way.
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, all right, Mark is in Connecticut. What's that Mark?
- 1:39:36Speaker 7: Hey, guys, Evan, I think this might be more of
- 1:39:38Speaker 7: a question for you, but I understand. Uh, Pop, our guy,
- 1:39:42Speaker 7: Pop Douglas is very you know, discruptled over the last
- 1:39:45Speaker 7: two games, and I see why, and I wanted to
- 1:39:47Speaker 7: get your take on it. Yeah, there's no bunch form
- 1:39:50Speaker 7: there's no bunch formations going on. There's no quick crossing routes.
- 1:39:54Speaker 7: There's no quicksplan that would.
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: Unlock Pop Douglas. And you know guys like that, you
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: know Baker, You know those kind of guys can get
- 1:40:03Speaker 3: open quick. And I don't understand when you have bad tackles,
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: those are the kind of plays that you want to
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: run because your quarterbacks are not going to be getting
- 1:40:12Speaker 3: killed back there. So what is your guys your sake
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: why they're not.
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: Doing Yeah, thanks, thanks for the call. Markets. It's a
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: good point and I wish we had a little bit
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: more time to dissect it, but just quickly on Pop.
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: I have like three theories on Pop Douglas, and I'll
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: try to be as quick as I can. The number
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: one theory that I have that I really feel like
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: is driving the bus here on this because the other
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: two are kind of a little tin foil hattie. The
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: number one theory that I have is that for this
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: style of offense that they're playing, Alex van Pelt does
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: not view Pop Douglas as a base receiver in this offense.
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: So when they're in their base early down offense, they
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: are playing a lot of two receiver. It's a lot
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: of twelve personnel, and it's a lot of kJ Osborne
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: and Jalen Polk, right, because they want two guys. Everybody
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: made fun of me. I'll say it again, Marine, even
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: though they made fun of me. They want two guys
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: that can dig out the nickel on duo, right, Like,
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: if you're gonna have receivers guys that can block. Yeah,
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: they want two guys that can block. See, he made
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: fun of me too. They wanted a really weird way
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: to put that. Well, I said that in a longer
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: rant about the blocking. Okay, all right, they want two guys.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: They need guys. We got practice in seventeen minutes.
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: They need receivers that can block. He's one hundred and
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: eighty pounds.
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: The one thing that he can do on early downs
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: is motion. Right, That's that's really it. They did that
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: a couple times with him on Sunday. That's those were
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: his snaps on twelve personnel or motion. That's all they
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: got in his bag. Like, he's not going to block
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: at the point of attack, he's not going to be
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: in the run fit. They can't have him on the
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: field for those types of things. If this is the
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: offense they're going to be. He is not a base
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: receiver in their offense. The second theory, which I really
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: feel like has some validity to it. I don't think
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: Jacob Recept particularly likes throwing him the ball. He's talked
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: about it a lot in the summer. He's a shorter receiver.
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: I don't think Jacob he has a ton of experience
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: throwing to five foot eight receivers. Do you have to
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: be really accurate with the football to throw to a
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: guy like that because he doesn't have a big catch radius.
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: He also probably isn't going to box out a lot
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: of guys at the catch point either, so you have
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: to put the ball on them like it's got to
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: be a good throw. He doesn't look one hundred percent
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: comfortable in my estimation throwing the football to Pop Douglas. Now,
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: is that a fair enough excuse? Probably not. But at
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: the same time, he's the one throwing the football, right
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: So I can't sit here and say, Jacoby, you have
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: to do this because he's the one throwing it. He's
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: the one out there on game they doing it. The
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: third theory I have is pacing, Like I don't know
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: if they wanted to force feed him like you mentioned,
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: like jet sweeps and screens and like all that, Like
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: you know, it's week two. I don't know if they
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: wanted to do that with him right out of the
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: gate and have him take those shots and take those
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: body blows this early on in the season. My I
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: would say, if I had to split up the pie,
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: I probably go like sixty five percent that his usage
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: and the fact that he's a base receiver or not
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: a base receiver in this offense and there's not a
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: ton of playing time there for him, I'd go, you know,
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: kind of split the rest of it between Jacoby and
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: in pacing. But in terms of like the bunches and
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: the slants and all that kind of stuff, I have
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: been a little bit surprised that we haven't seen more
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: of that simply because it's a West Coast offense. When
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: they get into their drop back pass game, and that
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: is the West Coast offense, right, Like you know, I
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: remember watching like highlights as a kid of Jerry Rice
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: just taking slants like seventy five yards of the house
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: like that. That's this offense. My guess is is that
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: there's a lot of game planning going in for defenses
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: where they're saying like that's kind of what the Patriots
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: are gonna do, right, Like they're gonna throw quick passes
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: over the middle of the field and try to get
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: some guys loose, like Pop Douglas. So my guess is
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: that they're taking some of that stuff away. But those
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: are my three theories on Pop Douglas and just quickly,
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: where do you kind of stand on him?
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: I mean, I think it's all I agree with you
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: across the board. They want receivers that can block. I
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: wonder if there's a trust a level of trust with Jacoby.
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: But at a certain point, if you're Jacober set pop Doug,
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: it's gonna help you win games. It's gonna help you, frankly,
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: keep your job or not even just keep your job,
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: but like get your job elsewhere next year.
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a weapon for you.
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: You gotta figure out a way to get him involved.
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, all right, Dad wraps it up for this show.
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: I really enjoy the fact that we just did a
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: show where we didn't like debate about Drake May because
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: I feel like that's like, you know, should he play?
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: Should he not? Should he not play? Let's give it
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: a couple of weeks, folks, and see what it looks
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: like on Thursday night. I'm not ready to go there
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: just yet, but we'll see. I will be back normal time,
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: I believe next week. Normal Thursday show next week, and
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: we'll get back into the swing of things. And then
