- 0:00How do we get through the wilderness?
- 0:03There's no problem so bad that complaining about it won't make
- 0:07it worse. Looking to Jesus Christ, that's
- 0:11what gives you the courage. Will I really trust the one who
- 0:16has already faced my giants? Sometimes it's the simple things
- 0:20that we don't have faith to believe in.
- 0:23Could it really be so simple? Well friends, I don't remember
- 0:32very much from my Old Testament year of seminary.
- 0:36I was in 9th grade and honestly, I was more interested in the
- 0:39young ladies in the class than I was the topic.
- 0:42One thing I do remember about 9th grade seminary is that was
- 0:44the year that I got kicked out of seminary one day.
- 0:47So if you ever happen to be an early morning seminary teacher
- 0:50and there's a rowdy boy in your class, just have patience with
- 0:53them things. Things could work out.
- 0:55Another thing I remember from that year of seminary though, is
- 0:57one day the teacher came into the room.
- 1:00We were studying the book of numbers and he wanted us to
- 1:03write something down next to where it said numbers in the
- 1:07title. He said in the margins, I want
- 1:09you to write in the wilderness. Now, that's a random fact to
- 1:13remember from your 9th grade seminary class, but it stuck
- 1:16with me all these years. It wasn't until many years later
- 1:19that I understood why he had told us to say that.
- 1:21You see, in English, we call it the Book of Numbers, based on
- 1:25the Greek title, based on the Septuagint that we've talked
- 1:28about before. And if you read in Numbers,
- 1:31chapter 1, you can easily see why this is the case, right?
- 1:34Number, number, number, number. It's all about Numbers for much
- 1:38of the book, but the Hebrew title of the Book of Numbers is
- 1:42different. The Hebrew title actually means
- 1:45in the wilderness, and Numbers takes more time in the
- 1:50wilderness than Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy
- 1:53combined. So let's zoom back for just a
- 1:56moment and see how Numbers fits into the big picture.
- 1:59So if we start in chapter 12 of Exodus, it's about one year from
- 2:03the first Passover to finishing the Tabernacle.
- 2:07The book of Leviticus takes about one month as God reveals
- 2:11laws of holiness, and then the book of Deuteronomy is a month
- 2:16or two as they renew the covenants prior to entering the
- 2:20promised Land. So in between is the book of
- 2:23Numbers, which takes almost 40 years.
- 2:26This is the Israelites wandering in the wilderness.
- 2:30And today we'll see why the Israelites, instead of taking a
- 2:33few weeks or months to get to the Promised Land, took 40
- 2:36years. Now, it's easy to get bogged
- 2:38down in the Book of Numbers because there are lots of lists
- 2:42and things like that. But there are also powerful
- 2:46stories that point to Jesus Christ.
- 2:47In fact, Book of Mormon authors loved to talk about stories from
- 2:51the Book of Numbers and point us to them.
- 2:54So today we're going to focus on six stories from the Book of
- 2:58Numbers. We'll see the complaining, the
- 3:0010 and the 2, the Passover exception, the daughters of Zolo
- 3:04Fahad, the talking donkey and the serpent on a pole.
- 3:09Six stories. And because I really believe in
- 3:12the value of different Bible translations, we're going to use
- 3:15a different Bible translation for each of the stories we
- 3:19explore today. We'll start with the King James,
- 3:22which is written at a 12th grade level, and we'll wind up with
- 3:25the New International Readers version, which is written at a
- 3:30third grade level. And part of my point in doing
- 3:32this is you might be fine reading any version of the
- 3:35Bible. Your reading skills might be
- 3:37great, but it's almost certain that you have a cousin, a child,
- 3:40a friend, so in your circle that does not understand the Bible
- 3:44because they can't read at the level of the King James.
- 3:47And so my hope is that as we see these different Bible
- 3:50translations that you'll realize that no matter what a person's
- 3:54reading level, there's a Bible that will work for them.
- 3:57So let's start with the complaining.
- 3:59I think you'll agree that if there's one thing humans are
- 4:02good at, it's complaining. We complain about anything.
- 4:05The weather, it's too hot, it's too cold, it's too wet, it's too
- 4:08dry. Unless it's 72° and free
- 4:11Chick-fil-A is being delivered to our porch, we're not
- 4:14satisfied. I mean, think about Wi-Fi.
- 4:16When I was in college, there was no such thing as Wi-Fi.
- 4:20Now if a page takes 2 seconds to load, it's like I'm job in the
- 4:24wilderness. God, why have you forsaken me?
- 4:27Now I bring this up because this isn't new.
- 4:30When we open the Book of Numbers, we see a pattern of
- 4:33complaining. The people complained and the
- 4:35Lord heard it and his anger was kindled.
- 4:39A couple of chapters later, all the children of Israel murmured
- 4:42against the Lord and against Aaron.
- 4:44And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, How long
- 4:47shall I bear with this evil congregation which murmur
- 4:50against me? I have heard the murmurings of
- 4:52the children of Israel. So the pattern is the people
- 4:55complain, the Lord hears it and he's not happy about it.
- 5:00The people even complain about what had been a blessing.
- 5:03They say, wherefore have you brought us out Egypt to die in
- 5:06the wilderness. There is no bread, neither any
- 5:08water and our soul, lo this, this light bread.
- 5:13Their souls loathe manna. God is literally giving them
- 5:16miraculous food in the desert and they're mad about it.
- 5:20Can you imagine what the Israelites would say if they had
- 5:22social media? Maybe Joe the Israelite would
- 5:25tweet something like this Day 4007 29 of eating Mana.
- 5:30Same thing every day. Still no Chick-fil-A hashtag,
- 5:33Worst road trip ever hashtag Bring back Egypt.
- 5:37Or maybe Joe the Israelite would create an Instagram poll, like
- 5:40would you rather eat cucumbers in Egypt or Mana in the desert?
- 5:44Now, it's easy to poke fun at the Israelites, but we do the
- 5:50same thing, right? Maybe we pray to have a family,
- 5:53but then we complain when our kids aren't perfect.
- 5:56We're probably all guilty of complaining, and sometimes we
- 5:59have really serious things to complain about.
- 6:03Maybe even what we might say is a justifiable complaint.
- 6:06That's why I love so much this quote from Little Richard G
- 6:09Scott. He said we should never complain
- 6:12when we are living worthily about what happens in our lives.
- 6:1614 years ago the Lord took my wife beyond the veil.
- 6:19I love her with all my heart, but I have never complained
- 6:24because I know it was His will. I have never asked why, but
- 6:28rather what is it that He wants me to learn from this
- 6:31experience. I believe that is a good way to
- 6:34face the unpleasant things in our lives, not complaining, but
- 6:38thanking the Lord for the trust He places in us when He gives us
- 6:43the opportunity to overcome difficulties.
- 6:46So I think we all know that complaining isn't healthy, but
- 6:49how do we break the cycle and stop complaining?
- 6:52A psychologist named Doctor Robert Keegan at Harvard
- 6:55University shares a simple process that for me is really
- 6:58helpful if I can remember to do it.
- 7:01Here's how it works. Step one is take your complaint
- 7:06and turn it into a statement of what you want to have happen.
- 7:11So if my complaint is how there's no food in the house,
- 7:14that's my complaint. What do I want to have happen?
- 7:16I want to have lots of delicious food around me.
- 7:19Step 2 is take responsibility for making what you want become
- 7:25reality. So I can go shopping, I can
- 7:28order DoorDash, I can raid my roommates fridge, right?
- 7:30I have lots of options. Let's see a couple of other
- 7:33examples. A person is in Sunday school.
- 7:35They think this is so boring. That's their complaint.
- 7:39What do they want to have happen?
- 7:42I want to be spiritually fed. Great, then I can take
- 7:45responsibility for making that happen.
- 7:47I can pray for the teacher. I can take notes.
- 7:49I can open my scriptures. Or another example, a person
- 7:52complaints. Nobody ever talks to me.
- 7:55Turn that into a statement of what you want.
- 7:58I want to have good relationships with people.
- 8:01Then I take responsibility for making that happen.
- 8:04I can say hi to people, join a club.
- 8:05There's so many things in my control.
- 8:08See, complaining is reactive. The two step process helps us
- 8:12shift into a proactive mode. So I want you to try this.
- 8:16Take a moment, think about this two step process.
- 8:18Maybe try it with a complaint that you've had.
- 8:20Maybe you've had a complaint in the last week or the last month,
- 8:23or maybe even this morning. Take your complaint and turn it
- 8:26into a statement of what you want to happen, and then think
- 8:29about how you could take responsibility for making what
- 8:33you want become reality. I've had to move and in my past
- 8:38I've always been kind of more introverted and this last move,
- 8:44which was about 6 months ago, I felt kind of alone in my new
- 8:48ward and I decided, well I can change that.
- 8:51It's up to me to put myself out there and get to know people.
- 8:55I've decided to make that more of a positive thing in my life
- 9:00and try to get to know them and put myself out there, and my
- 9:04husband told me that too. He said really it's up to us to
- 9:08make that a more positive thing in our lives.
- 9:10Yeah, I love that. Shifting from being a victim to
- 9:14taking control. Exactly.
- 9:15We don't need to be the victim here.
- 9:16Thank you. Now you might think to yourself,
- 9:19well, what if I have a complaint that I can't do anything about?
- 9:23It's completely out of my control.
- 9:26And that's where I think Elder Scott's comment is so valuable.
- 9:28He lost his spouse. There was nothing that he could
- 9:30do about that temporary separation, but he still chose
- 9:36to never complain. Some things, when they're out of
- 9:38our control, we can't fix it. We just have to put it aside.
- 9:42I love what Elder Holland said. It was something like there's no
- 9:45problem so bad that complaining about it won't make it worse.
- 9:50Now in our second story, the ten of the two, I want to take a
- 9:53deeper look at complaining, this sort of a special case of
- 9:56complaining, and maybe we can introduce it with a modern
- 9:59story. President Ukdorf told this many
- 10:01years ago. You might remember it.
- 10:03It was about a waiter at a restaurant who served a man a
- 10:05nice meal. And at the end he said to the
- 10:07man, did you like your meal? The man said everything was
- 10:10great, but you only gave me two pieces of bread.
- 10:13So the next day the waiter served 4 pieces of bread.
- 10:17It wasn't enough. The next day the waiter served 8
- 10:20pieces of bread. The man still wasn't satisfied.
- 10:23So the next day the waiter had a great idea.
- 10:25He cooked a nine foot loaf of bread, cut it in half and
- 10:30delivered it to the man. He thought the man would be
- 10:32ecstatic, but instead the man frowned and said, well, I see
- 10:36we're back to just two pieces of bread.
- 10:39This story reminds us that you always have a choice.
- 10:42There's a positive side of things you can see, or a
- 10:45negative side. And this story is powerfully
- 10:47illustrated in the account of the 12 Israelite spies.
- 10:51So this is before the 40 years of wandering in the wilderness.
- 10:56The Israelites have only been out of Egypt just over a year,
- 10:59and they're getting ready to enter into the Promised Land.
- 11:03But Moses sends 12 spies, one from each tribe, into the
- 11:07Promised land to get a feel for what it's going to be like.
- 11:11He says, go to the Hill Country, see what the land is like,
- 11:14whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether
- 11:17they are few or many, whether the land they live in is good or
- 11:20bad, and whether the towns that they live in are unwalled or
- 11:24fortified. Be bold and bring some of the
- 11:27fruit of the land. So 40 days later, the 12 spies
- 11:32returned with a report. The good news was the fruit of
- 11:35the land was incredible. This was a great land they were
- 11:39going to come into. But ten of them said we are not
- 11:43able to go up against this people for they are stronger
- 11:45than we. All the people that we saw in it
- 11:48are of great size. We seemed like grasshoppers.
- 11:53So the report of the 10 is those guys are giants.
- 11:56There is no way we can defeat them.
- 11:59But two of the spies, their names were Joshua and Caleb,
- 12:03gave a different report. Joshua and Caleb said the land
- 12:06is an exceedingly good land. The Lord will bring us into this
- 12:10land and give it to us. Do not rebel against the Lord
- 12:14and do not fear the people of the land.
- 12:19All the spies saw the same thing.
- 12:21They all saw the same land, the same fortifications, the same
- 12:25people. 10 Focus on the bad, too focused on the good, but the
- 12:31Israelites listened to the 10 The Israelites said would that
- 12:35we had died in the land of Egypt.
- 12:37Why is the Lord bringing us into the land to fall by the sword?
- 12:40Let us choose a captain and go back to Egypt.
- 12:44Why? Why would you want to go back to
- 12:46Egypt? And because of this rebellion,
- 12:49the Lord says no one who saw the miracles in Egypt is going to be
- 12:53able to enter into the Promised land.
- 12:55This is why the Israelites wander in the wilderness for 40
- 12:59years. Only Joshua and Caleb, the two
- 13:04spies with the good report, will be able to enter the Promised
- 13:08land. We might say it like this. 10
- 13:11saw problems, but two saw promises.
- 13:15Simple math tells you that if there's 12 people and only two
- 13:18see the promises, it's a lot easier to spot the problems than
- 13:22to see the promise. It's easier to complain than to
- 13:26have faith. So we might ask ourselves, how
- 13:28can I be the two and not the 10? What's the secret?
- 13:32Do I just use Doctor Keegan's method a little more often?
- 13:36Do I need to take a positive psychology class?
- 13:39Obviously, I think those things could be helpful, but ultimately
- 13:44I don't think it was because Joshua and Caleb just had extra
- 13:47positive psychology. They saw something that the 10
- 13:53didn't see. They saw the Lord.
- 13:55Remember their comment? The Lord will bring us into this
- 14:00land and give it to us. Their courage wasn't in
- 14:03themselves, it was in Jesus Christ.
- 14:06The Israelites faced a people that to them seemed like giants.
- 14:11But Joshua and Caleb knew that Jesus would face the greater
- 14:16giants of sin and death on the cross, that he would rise.
- 14:20And because he rose, even when nothing in our lives seems
- 14:25right, we know that nothing will ever be permanently wrong.
- 14:30Looking to Jesus Christ, that's what gives you the courage to be
- 14:36the two. Yes, 10 saw problems and two saw
- 14:40promises, but one secured the victory.
- 14:45So the question isn't will I be the 10 or the 2?
- 14:49The question is, will I really trust the one who is already
- 14:54faced my giants? Now, these first two stories go
- 14:58together, kind of have a theme of complaining.
- 15:01The next two stories are also related, and they have to do
- 15:05with exceptions to the rule. And I think most of us probably
- 15:10believe in the rules, but we also probably believe we're the
- 15:14exception sometimes. Like maybe you're driving
- 15:16somewhere and you believe in the speed limit, but you're late,
- 15:18you're in a hurry, or you're at the grocery store and you notice
- 15:23that the Express checkout lane only allows 10 items, but your
- 15:26items are really small, so they could all kind of group
- 15:28together, right? Sometimes it's more serious.
- 15:31A person might generally believe in honesty, but when we have the
- 15:35chance to download a file, I might think, wow, this doesn't
- 15:38really count. It's tricky because sometimes
- 15:42there are legitimate exceptions to the rules, and sometimes we
- 15:46just think we're an exception and we're making excuses and
- 15:49rationalizing to do what we want to do.
- 15:51So how can we know the difference?
- 15:54Let's explore a story in Numbers Chapter 9.
- 15:57So in Numbers Chapter 9, it's about one year after Exodus 12,
- 16:01after the original Passover. And if you remember, there was a
- 16:04specific day that Passover was to be celebrated, so that time
- 16:09is coming up. But there were certain men who
- 16:12were unclean through touching a dead body.
- 16:16Remember ritual purity that we talked about in Leviticus?
- 16:19This is that issue. So they could not keep the
- 16:21Passover on the appointed day because they're ritually
- 16:25unclean. So the people want to
- 16:27participate. They go to Moses and say, what
- 16:29do we do? When it came to pass, Moses
- 16:31said, sorry, we have a policy here, no exceptions.
- 16:34Just kidding. That's not actually what It's
- 16:36not actually what Moses said. Actually, Moses is always
- 16:40checking with the Lord. He said, wait, that I may hear
- 16:44what the Lord will command concerning you.
- 16:47So Moses explains the situation to the Lord, and it's
- 16:49interesting that the Lord expands the exception.
- 16:52Not only does he say yes, they can keep the Passover on a
- 16:55different date if they're unclean through touching a dead
- 16:58body. He also says if a person is on a
- 17:01long journey, he can still keep the Passover one month later
- 17:05than the normal date. So the Lord was comfortable with
- 17:08making an exception. And I think it's interesting
- 17:11that the Lord's the one who created the law initially, like
- 17:15he could have built in like codes and sub codes and said,
- 17:17well, in these all these circumstances, but he didn't do
- 17:20that. He gave the law.
- 17:22But then when circumstances came up, people turned to Moses,
- 17:25turned to the Lord and he was flexible with exceptions.
- 17:30It's important to note though, that not everyone is an
- 17:33exception. The Lord says if anyone who is
- 17:36clean and is not on a journey fails to keep the Passover, that
- 17:40person shall be cut off. So it comes back to our original
- 17:44question. How do I know if I'm really an
- 17:47exception or if I'm just kind of making an excuse?
- 17:50That person shall be cut off from his people because he did
- 17:54not bring the Lord's offering at its appointed time.
- 17:57Now we might say the people in Numbers Chapter 9, they had a
- 18:00big advantage because they could just go to Moses and say, could
- 18:04I be an exception? So wouldn't it be nice?
- 18:06Maybe if you heard something from the prophet, you could just
- 18:09knock on his door and say, am I an exception to this?
- 18:11Well, maybe you could just write President Oakes a letter.
- 18:15If you think you're an exception, actually don't do
- 18:17that, President Oakes said in one address.
- 18:20If you feel you are a special case, please don't write me a
- 18:23letter. I have learned that the kind of
- 18:25direct counsel I have given results in a large number of
- 18:29letters from members who feel they are an exception, and they
- 18:33want me to confirm that the things I have said just don't
- 18:36apply to them in their special circumstance.
- 18:39Whether an exception applies to you is your responsibility.
- 18:45You must work that out individually between you and the
- 18:49Lord. This is a weighty
- 18:51responsibility. It requires maturity.
- 18:54I mean, you can probably think of either your own life for
- 18:57examples from others where people said they were an
- 18:59exception, but really it was just a rationalization or an
- 19:03excuse. So if we ever have to ask
- 19:06ourselves, am I an exception, I have to take seriously the
- 19:10responsibility of working that out with the Lord.
- 19:13I love what President Packer taught.
- 19:15Things are not always easy when we receive counsel.
- 19:18Always we can say we're an exception.
- 19:20But I say, As for me, I'm going to follow the rule 1st.
- 19:25And then should there be an exception, perhaps that will be
- 19:28made known. Now, this is not an easy topic.
- 19:31I don't think this is revelation one O 1.
- 19:33This is more like revelation three O 1 because you have to
- 19:36kind of wrestle with your own thoughts and desires.
- 19:39So take a moment introspectively and think about this issue.
- 19:44How have you, in your own life been able to tell the difference
- 19:47between genuinely being an exception versus just making an
- 19:52excuse and rationalizing? If I say a prayer and I am
- 19:58faithful, God will tell me if I am, if I am making an excuse or
- 20:06if I am genuinely an exception. That's really the whole gospel
- 20:10right there. Thank you.
- 20:14I just had the thought that when we maybe judge somebody else
- 20:18that we think that are making an exception, but maybe they have
- 20:22taken that to the Lord and they've gotten their witness or
- 20:25their answer and we can respect their answer for them.
- 20:30And maybe it's different than what our answer is and just
- 20:34respect each other. We don't have to explain it to
- 20:37everybody, but just trust in our own answers or their own answer
- 20:42to and respect it. Yeah, it makes you wonder, like
- 20:44the people in Numbers Chapter 9, maybe their neighbors noticed
- 20:47all those guys aren't celebrating the Passover, and
- 20:49then a month later they do. They're like, oh, look at those
- 20:51guys. But yeah, we don't need to
- 20:53judge. Thank you.
- 20:55When this theme comes up in my life, I have to stop and ask
- 20:58myself, am I avoiding a lesson that God is trying to teach me?
- 21:02Because I don't want to admit when I'm wrong and it's
- 21:05sometimes denying me of the blessing of being able to offer
- 21:08my contrite heart to my Savior. So sometimes it requires me to
- 21:13really navigate the hard parts about being a human and then I
- 21:16have to stop and ask myself, is this bringing me closer to God
- 21:19or is this taking me further away with excuses?
- 21:22Yeah, thank you. The next story we'll explore is
- 21:25also in this genre of being an exception.
- 21:28So this is the story of the Daughters of Zoloft, Fahad.
- 21:32Here's what's happening. By the time we get to the end of
- 21:34the Book of Numbers, it's towards the end of the 40 years
- 21:37of wandering in the wilderness. So most of the people have died.
- 21:41And there was a man named Zolo Fahad who had passed away.
- 21:44He had seven daughters and no sons.
- 21:48So according to the law, the inheritance of all of his land
- 21:52is going to pass back into his tribe, not to his daughters.
- 21:56So the daughters could say, well, Oh well, we have nothing.
- 22:00Life's hard, but instead the daughters of Zolo Fahad stood
- 22:04before Moses and said our father died in the wilderness.
- 22:07Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because
- 22:11he had no son? Give us property among our
- 22:14father's relatives. What does Moses do?
- 22:17Well, of course, you know, Moses is always checking with the
- 22:20Lord. Moses brought their case before
- 22:22the Lord and God clearly responded.
- 22:25What Zolo Fahad's daughters are saying is right.
- 22:29You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among
- 22:32their father's relatives and give their father's inheritance
- 22:36to them. So because of the faith of the
- 22:39daughters of Zolo, Fahad and Moses, humility in turning to
- 22:42God, the whole inheritance law system is changed, not just for
- 22:47them, but for all of Israel going forward.
- 22:49To me, the story is a reminder that revelation is scattered
- 22:54among us. It's not Moses at the top giving
- 22:57all the information. There's lots of revelation
- 22:59coming through Moses. There's also revelation and
- 23:02insights scattered amongst the people.
- 23:06And I think we see the same thing today.
- 23:09You might remember the story of Aurelia Rogers in 1878.
- 23:13She was living in Utah, and she noticed a problem in her
- 23:16neighborhood. There were a lot of rowdy boys.
- 23:20And she thought to herself, there's no way these boys are
- 23:22going to grow up to be worthy husbands and fathers in Zion.
- 23:27So she had an idea of gathering these boys together and teaching
- 23:30them songs about Jesus and giving them instruction.
- 23:33But then she thought, you know, the boys don't sing very well,
- 23:36so I'm going to invite the girls to come too.
- 23:38You probably can see where this is going.
- 23:40Classes being organized for young children, singing songs,
- 23:44learning about Jesus. This is the beginning of the
- 23:47primary program. Primary starts because a woman
- 23:50saw a problem in her neighborhood and started solving
- 23:54it. Now you don't have to start a
- 23:56major church organization either to be like the daughters of
- 23:59Zulu. Fahad.
- 24:00A couple years ago, there was a woman in my steak, and she was
- 24:03really inspired by Elder Stevenson's comments and general
- 24:06conference about celebrating the Easter season, about emphasizing
- 24:11Palm Sunday and Good Friday. So it was around January or
- 24:15February, and she sent an e-mail to the stake presidency and
- 24:18said, hey, are we doing anything in our stake to celebrate Palm
- 24:21Sunday? They were back and said, no,
- 24:23we're not, but you're welcome to lead an initiative if you want.
- 24:27And so she got things together. And on the evening of Palm
- 24:31Sunday, we had 1500 plus people in our stake center gathered
- 24:35together and the children were up front singing, waving palm
- 24:39branches. It was incredible.
- 24:42And the woman could have complained.
- 24:43How come our steak doesn't do a Palm Sunday activity?
- 24:46But she saw a problem and she spoke up.
- 24:49Now, just like with many other true gospel principles, I think
- 24:52we have to be careful with this one because I think this story
- 24:56could be misapplied, right. Hiram Page thought he was
- 25:00receiving lots of good revelations, but he'd been
- 25:04deceived. And even if a person isn't
- 25:06deceived, I might have a really good idea, but I take it to my
- 25:09Bishop or my state president, and the suggestion isn't
- 25:13accepted. So I think there's different
- 25:15ways you can go wrong. You can go wrong by just sitting
- 25:17back, complaining, not offering your good ideas.
- 25:21But I can also go wrong by criticizing leaders if my ideas
- 25:26aren't accepted. And I love that the daughters of
- 25:29Zulu Fahad strike the balance. Now this takes us to probably
- 25:34the strangest story in all of scripture, or at least one of
- 25:36the top ten. It's the story of the talking
- 25:39donkey. And as we'll see you, you
- 25:41probably know the basic story, but you might not know the sad
- 25:45ending of the story because sometimes we skip over it.
- 25:48So we're in numbers. Chapter 22, the 40 years of
- 25:51wandering in the wilderness is up.
- 25:53Israel's getting ready to enter the promised land, and the kings
- 25:58and the surrounding lands are nervous about Israel trying to
- 26:01take over their territory. So there's a guy named Balak.
- 26:05He's the king of Moab, and he goes to a local prophet whose
- 26:12name is Balaam. It's a little confusing because
- 26:14their names are like, Balak is the king, Balaam is the local
- 26:19prophet, and Balaam is not an Israelite.
- 26:23So Balak goes to Balaam, who's not an Israelite, but he's known
- 26:28as having prophetic powers, and he asks Balaam to curse Israel.
- 26:34Balaam's response is powerful. Balaam says, even if Balak were
- 26:37to give me his palace filled with silver and gold, I would be
- 26:40powerless to do anything against the will of the Lord my God.
- 26:44Nope, not going to help you. But then Balak sends more
- 26:47servants to Balaam, offering more promises, more treasure.
- 26:52So Balaam's like, well, maybe I'll ask the Lord again.
- 26:55Kind of reminds me of Joseph Smith, Martin Harris, and the
- 26:57Lost. 116 pages. So that night God came to Balaam
- 27:01and told them, since these men have come for you, get up and go
- 27:05with them, but do only what I tell you to do.
- 27:09So Balaam saddles up his donkey to go meet Balak, but it seems
- 27:13like right away he does something contrary to what God
- 27:17wants him to do. We read God sent the Angel of
- 27:20the Lord to stand in the road to block his way as Balaam was
- 27:25riding along. Balaam's donkey saw the Angel
- 27:28and bolted off the road into a field.
- 27:31But Balaam beat the donkey and turned it back onto the road.
- 27:35This happens three times and finally the donkey just lies
- 27:39down in the middle of the road. Balaam is so furious that he
- 27:43starts beating his donkey with a staff, and then the Lord gives
- 27:47the donkey the ability to speak. The donkey says, What have I
- 27:51done to you that deserves you beating me three times?
- 27:55Balaam said. You have made me look like a
- 27:57fool. If I had a sword with me, I
- 27:59would kill you. But I am the same donkey you
- 28:02have ridden all your life. Have I ever done anything like
- 28:06this before? Balaam realizes.
- 28:09No. Then the Lord opened Balaam's
- 28:13eyes and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the roadway
- 28:16with a drawn sword in his hand. Balaam bowed his head and fell
- 28:20face down on the ground before him.
- 28:23The Angel said. Why did you beat your donkey
- 28:25those three times? I have come to block your way
- 28:27because you are stubbornly resisting me.
- 28:30Three times the donkey saw me and shield away.
- 28:32Otherwise I would have certainly killed you by now and spared the
- 28:37donkey. So Balaam confesses I have
- 28:39sinned. I didn't realize you were
- 28:41standing in the to block my way. I will return home if you are
- 28:46against my going. Got to love that about Balaam.
- 28:49His heart seems to be in the right place.
- 28:51OK I'll go back but the Angel says go with these men but say
- 28:55only what I tell you to say. So Balaam arrives.
- 28:59Balaam says please curse Israel, and multiple times Balaam opens
- 29:06his mouth. But every time he opens his
- 29:07mouth, instead of cursing, blessings come forth, including
- 29:12one of the clearest messianic prophecies in the Old Testament.
- 29:16Balaam said. I see him, but not here and now.
- 29:19I perceive him but far in the distant future.
- 29:23A star will rise from Jacob. A scepter will emerge from
- 29:29Israel. Maybe in the star rising we see
- 29:34echoes. The Rising Star reminds us of
- 29:37the Star followed by the Wise Men.
- 29:40And notice the irony. Balaam was hired to curse God's
- 29:44people, but ended up proclaiming the one through whom all curses
- 29:50would be broken. Balak was so angry that Balaam
- 29:54had blessed Israel and not cursed it, that Balak said, I
- 29:59thought to promote thee unto great honor, but lo, the Lord
- 30:03hath kept thee back from honor. Now I think that's a great
- 30:07phrase to mark in your scriptures.
- 30:09The Lord has kept you back from honor.
- 30:14Think about it in your life. Has the Lord ever kept you back
- 30:19from honor? I'm reminded of the story.
- 30:21You probably are familiar with it.
- 30:23It's about a man named Hugh, and he was working in his garden.
- 30:27There was a current Bush that had really overgrown itself.
- 30:31And so he chopped it down to size.
- 30:34And mentally he could kind of hear the current Bush weeping,
- 30:36saying, why have you chopped me down?
- 30:38And Hugh said, I'm the gardener here.
- 30:40I know what I'm doing. Then years later, Hugh, who was
- 30:45a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was
- 30:47in line for a promotion in the military, but he was
- 30:50specifically denied the promotion because he was a
- 30:53member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
- 30:57When this happened, he was devastated.
- 30:59And he turned to God and said, God, how could you let this
- 31:01happen to me? And he heard the Lord say back
- 31:04to him, I'm the gardener here. Can you see this example of the
- 31:08Lord keeping Huey Brown back from honor?
- 31:13Honor in the military. But God had a different plan.
- 31:16Eventually Huey Brown became a member of the First Presidency.
- 31:20So think about your life. When is choosing the right kept
- 31:25you back from honor? What happened in the short term,
- 31:29in the long term? In some cases, maybe there's a
- 31:31short term set back like Huey Brown received, but a long term
- 31:35blessing. And sometimes, as we've seen
- 31:38many times throughout this course, things don't always work
- 31:42out in mortality for the righteous.
- 31:44Sometimes the Lord will keep you back from honor.
- 31:48But if the story ended there, I think we'd still say what a
- 31:51great story, Balaam. He's faithful, he's strong, he
- 31:53prophecies of Christ love it. But then the story takes a dark
- 31:57turn because on the outside, Balaam looks obedient.
- 32:02He's only speaking the words God gives to him, but inside he's
- 32:05scheming. He's still chasing after money.
- 32:09Balaam gives Balak an idea. He says, I can't curse Israel
- 32:14for you, but maybe you can corrupt Israel.
- 32:20The Book of Revelation tells us this part of the story.
- 32:22Balaam showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel.
- 32:26He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by
- 32:31committing sexual sin. So what we're about to read in
- 32:34the Book of Numbers? Revelation tells us this whole
- 32:36thing was Balaam's idea. While the Israelites were camped
- 32:40at Acacia Grove, some of the men defiled themselves by having
- 32:43sexual relations with Moabite women.
- 32:46These women invited them to attend sacrifices to their gods,
- 32:49so the Israelites feasted with them and worshiped the gods of
- 32:53Moab. In this way, Israel joined in
- 32:55the worship of Baal of Pure, causing the Lord's anger to
- 32:59blaze against His people. As a result of this idolatry,
- 33:03there's massive destruction and trials amongst the Israelites.
- 33:07Balaam didn't curse the Israelites with words, but he
- 33:10managed to corrupt them with temptation.
- 33:12So what happens to Balaam? It's an unfortunate ending for
- 33:16him. He's executed by the Israelites
- 33:18and that's the end of the story. And the New Testament he's held
- 33:21up as an example of what not to do.
- 33:23We read Balaam loved to earn money by doing wrong.
- 33:29At the end of the day, Balaam is kind of a paradox.
- 33:31Or some things he does and you think yes, go Balaam, but at the
- 33:34end he loved money so much he chose to follow sin rather than
- 33:40the Savior. At the end of the day, his
- 33:43donkey saw things more clearly than he did.
- 33:47And I think if there is a hero in this story, it's got to be
- 33:51the donkey who in a way points us to Christ.
- 33:55Think about the donkey who is being beaten by Balaam, even
- 33:59while the donkey is saving Balaam's life, pointing us to
- 34:03Christ, who was beaten by the very people he came to rescue.
- 34:08The donkey is the unlikeliest of heroes, but even he points to
- 34:14the true hero. Now, the final story we'll talk
- 34:17about today has to do with a serpent on a pole.
- 34:20And it begins on a familiar note.
- 34:22The Israelites are complaining. Why have you brought us up out
- 34:24of Egypt? We will all die here in the
- 34:26desert. There isn't any bread, there
- 34:29isn't any water, and we hate this awful food.
- 34:32Then the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the Israelites.
- 34:36The snakes bit them. Many of the people died.
- 34:40The others came to Moses. Now I just want to pause here
- 34:43for a moment. You'll notice that we're now
- 34:44using the new Internet International Readers version,
- 34:47which is written at a third grade level.
- 34:49And there are different things that make something a higher or
- 34:52a lower grade level. For example, if you've got long
- 34:55words, even if you can understand it, like the word
- 34:57unprofitable, it's a longer word that would make it a higher
- 35:00grade level. You also have archaic words,
- 35:03which are words that we never use anymore.
- 35:07Archaic itself almost sounds like an archaic word.
- 35:09And then there's also the length of sentences.
- 35:12If a sentence is really long, that makes it harder to
- 35:15understand. So you'll notice here in the New
- 35:17International Readers Version, all the sentences are really
- 35:21short. And that might be annoying to
- 35:24some of us, but remember, this version of the Bible is
- 35:26translated from the earliest available manuscripts and it's
- 35:29designed to be read by a third grader.
- 35:32So we keep reading. The people say we have sinned
- 35:35when we spoke against the Lord and against you.
- 35:38Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.
- 35:41So Moses prayed for the people. Even with all their complaining,
- 35:45Moses is still loving. He's always checking with the
- 35:49Lord. The Lord said to Moses, make a
- 35:51snake, put it up on a pole, then anyone who is bitten can look at
- 35:55it and remain alive. So Moses made a bronze snake, he
- 35:59put it up on a pole, then anyone who was bitten by a snake and
- 36:03looked at the bronze snake remained alive.
- 36:07Now, a question that sometimes people have is why would a snake
- 36:10be used to represent Jesus Christ?
- 36:14You're probably thinking to yourself, I wish I could read a
- 36:15whole article on this topic. Wish granted.
- 36:18I have linked to one on the course website, and you should
- 36:20definitely check it out. For our purposes, we'll focus
- 36:23less on the snake and more on the fact that prophets in the
- 36:27Book of Mormon clearly understood that this symbol
- 36:31pointed to Christ. Alma said Jesus Christ was
- 36:34spoken of by Moses. Yeah, a type was raised up in
- 36:38the wilderness that whosoever would look upon it might live.
- 36:42And many did look, look and live.
- 36:45Now notice that many looked, but not everyone, Nephi explains.
- 36:50The labor which they had to perform was to look, and because
- 36:53of simpleness of the way or the easiness of it, there were many
- 36:59who perished because it just seemed too easy.
- 37:03They might have said, what? Leave my tent to go look at a
- 37:05serpent on a pole? That's never going to work.
- 37:08And it makes me wonder if we, too, are ever hesitant to do the
- 37:12simple things. And it came to pass that there
- 37:14once was a man named David. David was struggling in his
- 37:18marriage. It seemed like every
- 37:19conversation with his wife ended in contention.
- 37:23So we turned to an older couple in his ward.
- 37:26David admired this couple, and he thought that they might give
- 37:29him some good advice. What do you do to have a strong
- 37:32marriage? He asked them.
- 37:33Well, the wife said with a smile, we pray together every
- 37:37day. We read the scriptures together.
- 37:39The husband said we make it a priority to attend church and
- 37:42the temple together as a couple. As David walked away, he was
- 37:47disappointed. He thought to himself, that's
- 37:49just the typical church answers. That stuff won't help me.
- 37:54Alma said the reason they would not look is because they did not
- 37:59believe that it would heal them. Sometimes it's the simple things
- 38:03that we don't have faith I believe in.
- 38:06About 100 years after Alma, on the other side of the world,
- 38:11Jesus Christ was talking with a man named Nicodemus.
- 38:14Christ referred to this same story.
- 38:16He said Moses lifted up the snake in the desert.
- 38:19In the same way, the Son of Man must also be lifted up.
- 38:24And remember in Scripture that phrase lifted up in reference to
- 38:28Christ is talking about his crucifixion.
- 38:31The Savior says the Son of Man also must be lifted up.
- 38:34Then everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.
- 38:39On another occasion Christ said I am going to be lifted up from
- 38:44the earth. When I am, I will bring all
- 38:49people to myself. In the desert.
- 38:52God's people found life by looking at a serpent on a pole.
- 38:57At Calvary. We are pulled to Jesus Christ,
- 39:00lifted up on a cross. Those who look to him will live.
- 39:06So today we've been wandering in the wilderness with the
- 39:09Israelites. We've seen complaining about
- 39:12hard things. We've seen being proactive and
- 39:14exceptions to the rules and even a talking donkey.
- 39:18Each story points to Jesus Christ.
- 39:23As we're all wandering in our own wildernesses, we're going to
- 39:26face lots of challenges, lots of difficulties.
- 39:29How do we get through the wilderness?
- 39:33Could it really be so simple? Could looking to Jesus Christ
- 39:38really be enough?
